Roughly translated, this Greek proverb means, “it is sweet to view the sea when standing on the shore.” It suggests that once you’ve overcome a struggle, it’s easy to look back and appreciate the journey. That once you’ve conquered a hardship, it’s natural to be grateful. This proverb is especially poignant in light of the past year. In the face of a global pandemic, we worked together to ensure that love was always open in our community, in our homes, and in our hearts. Through the uncertainty, we relied on hope to help us find our way. And through the storm, we made it to the shore. In July, we threw our first post-pandemic event, “Mistletoe & Mai Tais,” to celebrate the holidays and the friends we missed last year. We were also finally able to host our storewide “Game Show Sale.” At Zachary’s, our vision is to create a culture of happiness, which turns customers into friends. These events allowed us to open our doors and welcome back our clients, all of whom are friends, and many, like family. Surrounding myself with family has always been vitally important to me. Whether you’ve got a big family, a small family, or friends you’ve chosen to be your family, our loved ones are more important than ever. Throughout this magazine, you’ll learn about my large Greek family and two important extensions of that family: Errol and Constance. You will also meet Vanessa, who we have welcomed as a Zachary’s brand ambassador and one of the newest members of our family. You are part of our family, too. And I’m so glad you’re here.

How has your family helped make you the person you are today?
Steve: Growing up in Annapolis, my parents believed in having a strong connection with our Greek community. I met a lot of people who gave me a sense of pride, and made me who I am today. Errol: My family always looks to me for guidance. My dad always thought I was the smartest one. As the oldest, you have to set an example for your brothers and sisters. How has someone in your family inspired you?
Steve: Watching my parents run their business for over 50 years while raising my sisters and I in a loving household made me appreciate the importance of working and staying close with my wife and family. Errol: My grandmother. For someone who was an immigrant without an education, she was brilliant. She was the matriarch of the family and ran it like a business. Where is your family from and what it was like growing up there?
Steve: I grew up here in Annapolis and will celebrate my 50th high school reunion this year. To have a thriving business in the heart of town for 30 years is very humbling. Errol: My family is from Belize. I always tell people that we were poor, but we didn’t know we were poor. Not a week went by when we didn’t see every family member. Family was so important to us.
Do you know why you were given your name?
Steve: In the Greek tradition, the first born male is given the paternal grandfather’s first name. My father’s two older brothers named their first sons Big George and Little George. My mom refused to name me Baby George, so they named me after the church they were married in. Errol: I got my name from my dad. I am just like him. Handsome. Smart. I’ve since given the name to my son since my father passed away early. His son is also named Errol Daly, so the world will always have an Errol Daly. What is one of your favorite things to do with your family?
Steve: The last month of the year is very intense in this business. I look forward to going to my sister’s house on December 24th and spending Christmas day with my entire family. Errol: Birthdays are really important to us. Growing up, there was always a birthday cake, ice cream and dancing. My mom thought it was important. No matter what. What is one of your fondest family memories?
Steve: Everyone in my family is born in the 4th quarter of the year. Instead of celebrating separately, we take a weekend and celebrate together. In 2005, we went to Williamsburg. When we returned, my father pulled me aside, told me he loved me, and that he regretted never learning to play golf so we could spend

more time together. The next day, he passed away, but I know how much love he had in his heart. Errol: We love to go on vacation. I recently went back to Belize with my whole family for the first time in 35 years.
Errol: I had a grand uncle who was good at ownership. He said you must own something. Property, a car, a television, even responsibility. When you own it, you can do whatever you wish with it. If you own it, you get to say, “this is mine.”
How has your birth order affected you?
Who is someone not related to you that you’ve always considered family?
Steve: As the oldest, I’m a bit bossy, a worrier and a perfectionist. Errol: I always try to look my best and carry myself the best, so I can set an example for them. When you’re the oldest, you’re in charge. You are the head of the family. Who inspired your passion for fashion?
Steve: My maternal grandfather was very dapper and always came to the dinner table with a shirt and tie on. My father was a sharp dresser, as is Errol, who epitomizes the best of fashion. He comes to work with backup outfit to ensure he always looks sharp. Errol: My grandfather inspired me. He was always impeccably dressed. He was always a gentleman. What relative was important to you growing up?
Steve: Grandmother in Greek is called “Yaya.” My father’s mother was instrumental in raising me. My parents both worked long hours and my grandmother was nurturing, protective, taught me compassion and how to speak Greek.

Steve: Errol has been with me through thick and thin. He traveled 90 miles each day to come to work for our first year and didn’t even get a paycheck. After 40 years together, we were finally able to vacation together. He’s the brother I never had. Errol: I’ve worked with Steve for so long. I was looking for a job and he saw something in me. I have more meals with Steve than I do my wife. We’ve grown together. When he says he is going to do something, he does it. That’s a bond you can’t shake. What is a saying someone in your family used that you still live by today?
Steve: “Success has a million fathers. Failure is an orphan.” People will latch on to anyone’s success, but no one wants to be associated with failure. I’ve always wanted to drive success for my business and my family. Errol: “Never beg. Earn everything you own.” Don’t put your hand out. So long as you are healthy and able, do it.
CORUM CELEBRATES 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE GOLDEN BRIDGE AUTOMATIC WITH PANORAMIC SAPPHIRE CASE DESIGN In honor of the 10th anniversary of the automatic in-line movement, Corum releases the new Golden Bridge Automatic series. Consisting of four models, the tonneaushaped case offers a dramatic view of the movement thanks to the panoramic sapphire crystal and case back in a larger size. Also, for the first time, Corum creates the sapphire crystal as a single sapphire piece that extends from the top crystal to the sides of the watch – allowing for a 360-degree view inside. Sapphire is one of the most difficult materials to deal with as it is brittle and can break in the manufacturing process. It also requires special attention to corners and metal case connections to render the watch water resistant. However, Corum’s in-house engineers and watchmakers have mastered the process with this single piece that covers the top and sides. The new versions feature cases in titanium and 18-karat gold model in a limited edition of 150 pieces, and a full titanium version in an edition of just 50 pieces. Each of these two materials are also offered with diamonds set on the case. Just 100 pieces of the diamond-set titanium-and-gold version will be produced, and only 25 of the diamondset titanium watch will be made. Additionally, Corum has invented a discretely placed floating harness system for its hand-applied indexes. The harness system links to the movement base so that the markers seem to be floating in space. As indicated in the series name – Golden Bridge – the main plates and bridges of the movement are in 18-karat gold for all versions. The 10th anniversary Golden Bridge Automatic is powered by the original automatic movement that remains incredibly advanced even by today’s standards. With all of its 194 parts in one line, the exclusive Corum Caliber C0313 boasts 40 hours of power reserve, a variable inertia balance wheel for long-term precision, a miniaturized barrel and main plate, bridges made of 18- karat gold, and a platinum linear oscillating weight. Water resistant to 30 meters, the Corum Golden Bridge Automatic 10th anniversary watches are finished with a soft-touch alligator strap and triple folding clasp. CORUM INJECTS MODERNITY AND ATHLETICISM INTO ITS ADMIRAL COLLECTION The Admiral is one of the pillars of Corum’s heritage. Unveiled in 1960, five short years after the brand’s creation, it embodies the Swiss watchmaker’s idea of maritime-inspired watchmaking. First introduced into the brand stable as the Admiral’s Cup AC-One 45 Chronograph in 2013, the masculine-looking watch has always been a combination of power, elegance and performance with a huge dose of inspiration from the sailing world. The new Admiral AC-One 45 Chronograph retains the essence of its urban sportiness of its predecessor while speaking to a wider audience that run the gamut from sailing enthusiasts to sports watch lovers looking for fuss-free horology on the wrist. The new Admiral AC-One 45 Chronograph features a more angular dodecagonal bezel and case crafted in grade 5 titanium. For the chronograph display, Corum selected a blue “Grenadier fendu” motif, which is a unique pattern to Corum, worked on by a team of experienced designers back at the manufacture in La Chaux-de-Fonds. The 12 nautical pennants, which are synonymous with the Admiral collection, remain on the flange as hour markers albeit without the colors so as to allow the watch to look sleek and modern. Powering the chronograph is the highly reliable Calibre CO 132, a self-winding movement that beats at 4 Hertz and boasts 42 hours of power reserve, 100m water resistance and decorative finishes specific to Corum. Turn the watch over to appreciate the finer details and finishing through the screweddown open-worked caseback. The Admiral AC-One 45 Chronograph is presented on a bracelet with a triple folding clasp.

My American dream has always been to be a working mom with a family and a career I love. I never realized how challenging and how rewarding it would be.

Maika and I both came from homes that valued family first. As we started dating, I think it was clear very early that we wanted a new family together. Within the first month of dating, I remember watching Maika bake an apple pie for a friend that was upset about a break-up. I knew then he would be an awesome father.
After years of trying to start a family and beginning to tour IVF clinics, we learned that our little miracle was finally coming! We named him Theodore, which means “gift from God.” And now we couldn’t be happier to be welcoming our second son in February of 2022.

Stacking rings for each child Each year, Zachary’s helps our local 5th graders show their mothers just how special they are with a Mother’s Day Jewelry Design Contest. This year’s winning designer explained how her grandmother lived with her family for eight years before she passed away from cancer. Our winner’s design was inspired by the paper cranes her sister made that used to hang from her grandmother’s ceiling. “She loved to watch them sway in the breeze,” she says. Paper cranes are very sentimental to her own mother now, who cherishes them as a symbol of her mom.

In May of 2021, so many young men and women had to be creative when it came to celebrating events like prom and graduation. Zachary’s was asked to host a Mom & Daughter Prom Party at the store, and we were thrilled to host these beautiful future clients for the evening. Guests enjoyed dinner, non-alcoholic bubbles and lots of jewelry to pose on their very own red carpet.

THE FAMILY BUSINESS Back in the early ‘90s, Steve Wistner got a recommendation from his in-laws, Bill and Mary Duvall, two life-long Annapolitans, to shop for a Christmas gift for his wife at Zachary’s. Bill had acquired many beautiful pieces of jewelry for Mary from Zachary’s over the years, and he thought it was time for Steve to be introduced to Zachary’s himself. Steve and Debbie have been married for 31 years, and Debbie has added a few treasures from Zachary’s herself since that first purchase almost 30 years ago. Steve is a graduate of USNA Class of ‘89 and considers Annapolis home; first introduced to the town when applying to the Academy. He spent four years here, was married here, his two sons were baptised here, and he coached lacrosse for eight summers and brought his sons with him. He has visited countless times regardless of how far away life has taken him. Steve was pleasantly surprised when his two sons, Stephen (Class of ‘15) and Brian (Class of ‘16), decided to go to the USNA. He was frank about the lifestyle, but was humbled and honored that they decided to go into the “family business.” Both of his sons graduated and purchased rings from Zachary’s for the loves of their lives. Stephen and Libby now have a daughter and new baby boy, while Brian just proposed to Sarah this past summer with a beautiful ring from Zachary’s. Steve jokes that since his sons have purchased big, beautiful diamonds from Zachary’s, his wife is ready for an upgrade from the diamond ring he purchased long before meeting the team at Zachary’s. While the Wistners no longer live in Annapolis, they wouldn’t consider shopping anywhere else. “Zachary’s may not be the most convenient choice, but Steve and his team offer the most wonderful experience. They’ve always treated us like family.” We, at Zachary’s, look forward to someday welcoming Steve’s grandkids as fourth generation customers!

Since we were unable to safely celebrate the holidays together last December, Zachary’s hosted “Mistletoe & Mai Tais.” This festive Christmas-in-July themed party allowed us to reconnect with good friends we had so dearly missed.
Friends gathered at the store and enjoyed giveaways, fun contests, island music and hula dancing, food and drink. With a special appearance by Island Santa, the event was well worth the wait!
