achary’s Story
It is only fitting that the cover of our decennial magazine features two of the greatest loves of my live – My wife, Challie, and my hometown of Annapolis. Throughout my life, I’ve had many opportunities to move away, but I could never leave the charm, sense of community, and strong historic fiber of Maryland’s capital city.
As a proud Annapolitan, I can’t imagine living and working anywhere else. Zachary’s, which we affectionately refer to as our own “Hollywood and Vine,” has become an integral part of the shopping district. The big windows of our store in the heart of downtown Annapolis reflect the mission we represent on the inside to be a seamless and meaningful part of our surrounding community.
My love for Annapolis, however, has never diminished my wanderlust. I recently had the adventure of a lifetime in Santorini, experiencing the culture of my family’s ancestry. And who better to share that experience with than Challie, the super model of my life. As you can see, this was a role she was always meant to play.
Speaking of models, I am so fortunate this year to introduce you to my dear friend, Stacey Manis. Not only is she our featured model, but her contributions to local architecture make her a particularly poignant addition to our artinspired magazine. You’ll also meet another close friend, Cheryl Staurulakis, in the following pages. An award-winning producer and avid jewelry lover, we are proud to share her story with you.
Another face you’ll surely recognize within this magazine is Joan Vassos. While you may know Joan as the very first Golden Bachelorette, I’ve had the privilege of knowing Joan for over 30 years. She and her late husband, John, were instrumental in the creation and success of Zachary’s, and we could not be more excited for Joan’s next chapter.
From another record-breaking event with Marco Bicego to sharing our favorite memories from the past decade, we hope you find as much joy within the pages of Zachary’s 10th magazine as we do.
I leave you all with a loving reminder to always look for the art in everything.

YEARS
IT’S WHAT MAKES US WANT TO GIVE that makes us feel alive.
1. GIVING BACK
“At Zachary's Jewelers, we’re proud to say ‘yes’ to every local charity request. It’s our way of giving back and celebrating the countless ways our community supports us over the years.”
2. UNITED STATES NAVAL ACADEMY
“At Zachary's, the USNA program is close to our hearts. With my husband being a Naval Academy grad, I truly appreciate the dedication it takes. We’re proud to serve their class rings.”
OUR TOP TEN FAVORITE THINGS
3. DOWNTOWN ANNAPOLIS & OUR COMMUNITY
“Being part of beautiful Downtown Annapolis, supporting our community and assisting generations of families has been an honor and a true privilege.”
4. THE MAGAZINE & BRIDAL YEARBOOK
"Throughout the year, I put on my 'Miranda Priestly' hat and create two beautiful works of art that encompass our gorgeous clients and team, our spectacular jewelry, and a collection of stories that showcase who we are at Zachary's."
5. OUR BRIDES & GROOMS
" I love everything about our bridal experiences. From the nervous groom choosing the perfect ring for his fiancé, to the excitement when the ring is presented, and then toasting together when it's time for wedding bands. Steve & I have been to hundreds of weddings and we love witnessing their joy."
6. MOTHER'S DAY CONTEST
"Since 2011, the Mother’s Day Jewelry Contest has been a pleasure not only to see the wonderful designs that 5th grade students create, but the amazing emotions that all the moms display after seeing them."
7. BEING PART OF YOUR MOMENTS
"It is an incredible honor for all of us to help with your special moments. From proposals & wedding day gifts to the birth of your beautiful babies and grand babies and everything in between. Sharing in your joy is the best part of working at Zachary’s! I am known in the store as the one who cries at every story shared."
"WE DO NOT REMEMBER DAYS, we remember moments." CESARE PAVESE
8. OUR PARTIES, HAVING FUN & BEAR DAY
"One of my favorite things is planning our events, from magazine unveilings and Margaritaville summer parties to our annual holiday celebrations. We’re always looking for fun ways to show everyone a good time. Plus, each month we have a tradition called Bear Day, where I dress teddy bears in Zachary's shirts to get them ready to send to our newest babies!"
Cheryl
9. LITTLE ONES & FURRY FRIENDS
“It’s the highlight of my day when a client drops by with their new baby (and I get to hold them!) or when we get visits from our furry friends. We’ve also added a new jewelry corner just for the little ones, where they can choose a piece of jewelry to take home. It’s absolutely adorable watching them select their favorite!"
Olivia
10. THE HOLIDAY SEASON
“Every year, right after Thanksgiving, I get my tuxedo cleaned and my shoes polished—it's a tradition I cherish. This time of year is special to me, starting with the Tree Lighting downtown and the performance by our Nutcracker ballerinas. Then it's the Zachary's Christmas party, and I’ve been seen showing off some dance moves before the night is over. On December 26th, I always remind my team, 'Just 364 days until Christmas!' After 40 years with Zachary’s, these traditions are a big part of what makes this season so meaningful.

QYou've won many awards. You've been before the UN. How does that make you
: I'm pretty proud. Lady Ganga won the Humanitarian Award at the Rhode Island International Film Festival and I have an Emmy nomination for our film Toxic . I love the horror films. They're fun to make and the fans are the most loyal fans in the world. But the documentaries have great power and are leading to change, inclusion and acceptance. And the Samaras family has always supported me. They have sponsored events and screenings of my documentaries, because they realize how important these causes are, too. They sell jewelry, but they're great humanitarians.
Q:How did you first meet Steve, Challie, and the Zachary's family?
A: I first met Stephen when my husband and I were looking at engagement rings back in 1983. I knew Stephen through my husband’s family. We're a Greek family, too, so over the years, we became close friends. I even helped to coordinate Steve and Challie’s wedding. So yes, we go back. We go back a little ways.
Q:What do you love most about the Zachary's experience?
A: You're always family. It's really cool when you see a midshipman coming in. They look at class rings and, before you know it, they’re picking up their engagement ring. And it goes beyond the Naval Academy families. Our sons don't live in the area, but they wouldn't think about buying a piece of jewelry anywhere else. My middle son recently called Stephen saying, “I need a push present.”
Then suddenly it’s her first Mother's Day. There's something about that box with the white paper and the red ribbon. We all get excited when we see that little black bag.
Q:Have you created any custom design pieces with the team at Zachary's?
A: Working with the expert designers at Zachary's, I have been able to create really incredible pieces. It all started with a Mikimoto pearl ring that my mother-in-law gave me. She had the exact same ring. For our first son's wedding, I wanted my mother-in-law's ring and my ring combined into one ring. Leslie was able to help me do that. I walked down the aisle with my new ring from my motherin-law on one hand and pearls that belonged to my mom around my neck. It's not just a piece of jewelry. It's what it represents.
Q: How would you describe the thread that weaves between, your art, the art that Zachary's creates, and all art?
A: Art resonates uniquely with each of us. Take three people watching the same film: one might feel anger, another joy, and a third sadness. Jewelry evokes similar responses. When you look at my peacock ring, one might appreciate its design and colors. For someone else, it could spark a cherished memory, while another might find meaning in it's name. ("Peacock” happens to be my designer's maiden name). I believe our brains are wired closely to our heart because art is so full of emotion.

THE ARTISTRY OF MARCO BICEGO
THE CREATIVE PROCESS
Marco Bicego jewelry is a creative vision brought to life; the result of a creative process in which every stage is carefully executed with passion, craftsmanship and technical know-how.
It all starts with an idea: a new shape, a play on perspective and dimension, the search for perfect harmony of line and curvature. The designs are inspired by organic forms found in nature, the beauty of 18 karat yellow gold and colored gemstones rendered unique because of their inclusions, a mark left by the passing of time.
THE MASAI COLLECTION & THE COIL TECHNIQUE
Inspired by the art and tradition of the African tribe, the Masai collection features bold and elegant styles that strike the perfect balance between everyday and elevated looks. Flat golden coils, distinctive to this collection, are formed using the brand’s exclusive coil technique. A gold wire is wrapped around a woven chain and pressed, creating a gold ribbon whose versatility translates to contemporary silhouettes. The collection’s minimal yet brilliant flair is both tactile and visually stunning.
I remember sitting at the workbench in my father’s company as a boy. That’s where it all began.
I remember the excitement of touching and crafting yellow gold. It was my father who passed on the passion for this job and gave me the courage to be daring, to believe in my dreams.

A DEDICATION TO Art for All
In 1978, Maryland Hall was founded by a group of visionaries who believed the Annapolis area deserved a community arts center. Ellen Moyer, Joseph Sachs, Joanne Scott, Senator Roy Staten, Beth Whaley, and Martha Wright saw the potential in the old Annapolis Senior High School, and opened the doors to Maryland Hall of the Creative Arts Inc. the following year.
Today, Maryland Hall is the region’s cultural core, bringing together people of all ages and backgrounds to promote the power of the arts through classes and experiences in art, music, theater, and dance.
Partnering with Maryland Hall for our 10th magazine was particularly significant due not only to our 50year history with the building itself, but our shared dedication to community, compassion, and creativity.
Learn more about Maryland Hall at marylandhall.org.
What it’s all about.
BECAUSE AT THE END OF THE DAY, IT’S ALL ABOUT INSPIRATION.
Growing up in Annapolis, I have a deep appreciation for its unique charm and rich history. Incorporating Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts into our 10th magazine was a particularly meaningful collaboration. Not only do I admire their mission to promote the power of art, but it also happens to be my old high school.
I still remember playing basketball in the gymnasium and watching plays in the auditorium. Algebra and geometry were my favorite subjects, in big part due to my favorite teacher, Mr. Stauffer.
Since graduating in 1970, I’ve seen Annapolis transform but the essence of this town remains the same. With its cobblestone streets and waterfront views, Annapolis has always been an inspiration to me. Just as a timeless piece of art or jewelry embodies and reflects moments of significance, so, too, does the city around us.
Whether through painting, music, or design, art not only captures the essence of inspiration but encourages us to see the beauty in everyday life.… And it flows endlessly in a town like ours.
