24 Dear Holy Child Community, This has been a very exciting and rewarding year on so many levels. I am honored to have been able to serve Holy Child this past year as Head of School and I continue to be amazed by this wonderful community. I am so grateful to the Holy Child Parents Association and Fathers Club who did an incredible job rallying volunteers throughout the year. Our community is so engaged and dedicated. Our graduating class of 2015 was impressive on many levels. Scholar athletes, students who maintain a 3.3 GPA while participating in sports, comprised 32% percent of the senior class. Additionally, 21% of the Class of 2015 participated in Fine Arts Week, and two seniors had artwork exhibited in the Congressional Art Show competition. The Class of 2015 was awarded almost $2.2 million in merit scholarships and was accepted to and are attending a host of exceptional colleges and universities; a complete list can be found at the front of this magazine and on our website.

In addition to the renovation of several classrooms over the summer, the library has undergone the first phase of a redesign. The purpose of this redesign will be to provide better access to resources and also to make better use of space for creativity, collaborative learning, and quiet study.

The Connelly School of the Holy Child Annual Report can be found in the back of this magazine. Those pages list the names of the many generous donors who helped us exceed our fundraising goals for both the Fund for Holy Child and our four major fundraising events. With our eyes firmly focused on the future, we have two new initiatives planned for this year. You can read about Fund Forward on page 38 and Innovate the Space on page 69. I have thoroughly enjoyed my first year here at Holy Child and thank you for partnering with us on this journey to shaping extremely confident and well-rounded students. I am energized every day by our dedicated faculty, staff, and students. Thank you, parents, for making it possible to provide this outstanding education to your daughters. As always, thank you for being a part of our amazing Holy Child community! Blessings,
Dr. Shannon Gomez Head of School

Creative Classrooms WORLD LANGUAGES
Creative Blooming What is creativity? Holy Child teachers offered some suggestions:
Show Stopping The 2014-15 musicals “Honk Jr.” and “Cats” were successful as much for the singing and acting talents on costumes and sets. For example, all the wigs for “Cats” were designed and constructed by our Holy Child students. The wigs were a product of our 3D sculpture class, all who worked tirelessly for weeks threading wool through swimming caps to build these one of kind wigs for each cat. The makeup was technical theatre class.
for a Helen Hayes award. These prestigious awards, the local Tonys, reward stage work in theaters throughout the metro area. Karina was nominated for “Outstanding Lead Actress in a Play” for her work in the Theater Alliance’s “Wonderful World of Dissocia,” which received nine nominations! Dean of Academics Ashley Lowry and her husband, Jeremy, welcomed Lucas Gregory Lowry last March. Director of Technology Juan Ramirez for more than 15 years, emigrated to the U.S. from Peru in the 1990s. Last spring, he and his wife Rocia officially became US citizens. They have two daughters, Angelina, 9, and Alejandra, 11. Alejandra started at Holy Child this fall.

thinking outside the box, looking at ideas and problems from a fresh perspective, and being unafraid to try new methodologies, experiment and explore meaningful alternatives.
In their Newsweek article “The Creativity Crisis” (July 10, 2010), Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman present a view of creativity that “requires constant shifting, blender pulses of both divergent thinking and convergent thinking, to combine new information with old and forgotten ideas.” Bronson and Merryman argue that “highly creative people are very good at marshaling their brains into bilateral mode, and the more creative they are, the more they dual activate.”

the ability to see differently or try things in a different way.
These are not random thoughts. Creativity is identified as the #1 leadership competency of the future (Bronson and Merryman, 2010). Holy Child parent Lisa Kazor, president and CEO of Savantage Solutions, sees this in practice in her business: “It is great to have, as part of our company, excellent programmers,” she says, “but when you find that unique individual who can conceptualize and communicate a creative and well-thought-out solution, one that programmers implement, you have been truly blessed.”

College Play
Two of our 2015 graduates proudly signed on the dotted line to play lacrosse at the next level, following a long line of recent graduates who have taken their talents to college squads. Caitlyn O’Berry, who won this year’s highest athletic award, along with two All-ISL nods, is at Brown University, and Olivia Edgerton signed with the University of California/Davis.
Preparing our students to solve problems in the real world is why nurturing creativity is essential. We are faced with issues of national and international importance, from climate change to immigration, and all require creative solutions. According to Bronson and Merryman, “such solutions emerge from a healthy marketplace of ideas, sustained by a populace constantly contributing original ideas and receptive to the ideas of others.” They also maintain that, “creativity isn’t about freedom from concrete facts. Rather, factfinding and deep research are vital stages in the creative process.” English Department Chair Kathleen Jensen adds, “Creative teaching involves good adaption and a fine antennae. I find I see something interesting and think, ‘Wow, how could I make this work in my classroom?’ Additionally, I think creativity in the classroom comes from choice, but not unlimited choice, coupled with modeling and time.” Fostering the creative brain does not simply reside in our arts courses. By the time she graduates, a Holy Child girl will be confident yet flexible in her thinking, original, persistent and open to new ideas. In short, possessing all the qualities of a highly creative person. - by Spanish Teacher Mary Switzer Haardt

Assignment: Find the way to a specific term that you cannot pull up. For a beginning student, it may be telling the waiter she needs something to eat her soup with (to come up with “spoon”). To get to “constituent,” an intermediate or advanced student may need to engage in deeper conversations about expressing an opinion and political representatives. It’s all about flexibility in expression. SOCIAL STUDIES Assignment: To teach how a bill becomes a law, the Honors Government and Law class runs a Mock Congress, with students serving as representatives or senators and go to their constituents (all 6-12 classes) listening for and promoting legislation concerning actual school rules to be signed into law (or vetoed) by the Head of School serving as the Executive Branch. This year they actually got a law passed to allow students a new privilege, with restrictions. Active Learning: The Model Organization of American States (MOAS) gives students the opportunity to become a diplomat in the annual convocation at the DC headquarters of the real OAS. After thoroughly researching their assigned country, they present and debate resolutions on a current issue on the Inter-American agenda, and vote to approve during a rousing simulation exercise with students from across the country.
HUMANITIES
Assignments: Create an altered book, visually representing themes from class that break the rules and show individualism, as much as art has. Create a crankie, a visual representation of the storytelling tradition. Both require breaking down stories and distilling key parts and delivering them in other mediums, such as a paper movie.
SCIENCE
Assignment: Design a unique experiment with sugar and salt to explore the structure of matter. Without expecting to be told specifically what to do, students designed a way to try out their ideas. The result: they exhibited curiosity and pondered observations, collaborated and worked cooperatively with their peers. Moreover, they demonstrated a willingness to modify their ideas and take risks. This skill is critical, according to science chair Kelly Tomon, relating to “solving scientific problems in the real world, rather than following scripted procedures and getting expected results.”
MATHEMATICS
Assignment: Render tessellations, describe what these are, in a colorful grid on tiles, which will adorn the ceilings of the school. Fall/Winter 2015-16 - Connelly Contact

Evening of Art National Honor Society The 2014-2015 members and new inductees to the NHS Cornelia Connelly chapter demonstrate the four pillars of this honor: character, service, integrity, and scholarship:
Art is an integral part of the Holy Child curriculum. As you might know, it’s a distinctive mark in the theory of teaching and the personal practice of Cornelia Connelly. Sofia Alpizar Kaylie Atwood Melissa Barrios Maria Berkowitz Lilly Blomquist Samantha Boccia Bridgid Bowman Katie Cynkar Kalie Dominick
Caroline Dyer Cecilia Garner Jennifer Harper Lilly Hollenbeck Anna Jorgensen Rebecca Kazor Katherine Kloster Kathryn Metro Lilly McCormick
Caitlyn O’Berry Anne Overly Jeanne Ryan Molly Shriver Hope Thomas Isabel Treichel Isabelle Tyshing Kathy Xavier
In that spirit, the Art IV class collaborated on a mural. Gifting it to the school, they hope a tradition begins, taking the Holy Child philosophy and visualizing it as a class. The students presented the mural at Evening of the Arts, the annual exhibition of student work. Evening of the Arts included self-portraits, crosscurricular projects with religion and math, and 3D Art by Middle and Upper School students. While Art IV is the summative class, an eye for art begins in Middle School, where students get introduced to international art movements and begin to think about their place in the world. It’s about them, “engaging with the world through the process of creating art,” says Middle School Art Teacher Vasia Deliyianni, “and eventually communicating deeper with each other regardless of their origin and differences.” Part of this effort is exemplified in two students receiving awards at the Global Issues Network art competition. Eliza White and Ellie Smith, both 8th graders, won 3rd Place with their newspaper dress, “Miss Elegant”. This year’s Evening of the Arts is April 20, 2016.

Applying the Holy Child Network Gigi McBride ‘19 spent a month in Ireland last year as a Holy Child Secondary School student in Killiney, Ireland. After weeks of planning with Gigi’s teachers and the administration in Killiney, she was on her way, spending the middle of November through a week before Christmas break overseas. Her host family, Jon and Tiffany Alleman, made Gigi’s life comfortable--and culturally enriching. Finding her way around the school, attending class with 15-and 16-year-olds, even getting back and forth to school every day was not so easy. She walked a mile to the local train and rode the train for thirty minutes each day. Some days she rode her bike through town to get to the station. Notwithstanding the challenges, Gigi rose to the occasion… and loved every minute of it. We know, because she wrote on her blog at mobilytrip.com religiously! Gigi discovered some differences… organization of the school day, Gaelic language classes, the local slang, but mostly things were similar to back home,
especially the motto of the school, Actions Not Words. She looks back on it fondly, “I am incredibly grateful to have the experience of a different way of life and learning. It showed me just how many possibilities there are in the world, and that I am capable of exploring them and confident in myself to accomplish anything.” Mom and Dad agree. “As parents, we are thrilled with the initiative our daughter showed in pursuing this international educational experience,” they say, “and we appreciate the support and encouragement she received from both Holy Child schools to make this exciting opportunity happen.” Gigi delivered a Holy Child Tigers flag to the principal, Geraldine Hackett, who was thrilled to have a fellow Holy Child girl from Washington at Killiney. All are hoping it will lead to more formal exchanges across the pond.
Building Up Jamaica Families
Two separate groups traveled from Holy Child this past spring, not just for fun, but for a larger purpose…absorbing culture and helping others. Before they traveled to Jamaica to work with the group from Food for the Poor, the students raised more than $6,000 to build a house. It was a lifechanging event for the family who had a new home, and also for the students who saw life in a new way. Here is one student’s take on the journey. I love my Jamaica. Jamaica loves me. This is a line from a poem that children from a school we visited recited to us. It sums up my experience of Jamaica quite well. My Jamaica wasn’t just a vacation or a beautiful beach. My Jamaica wasn’t even about me. Living such a privileged life here in the United States, having a safe shelter had always been something that I’d taken for granted. However, helping to build a house in Jamaica, I saw the real impact that even a small home can have on a family’s life. The gratitude that the Russell family expressed to us was evidence to me that the work we were doing was a way to show Christ to others. Personally, the most impactful part of the experience was visiting Gift of Hope, a home for those with disabilities ranging from autism to cerebral palsy. There I literally saw the face of Joy. Joy is a four-year-old girl who has cerebral palsy. Her name suited her well–she had the brightest smile I have ever seen. Even though she couldn’t speak, we had a connection that didn’t require words. She sat there holding my hand and playing with my nametag. Spending time with Joy, I finally understood the true meaning of the trip. I was there not only to show the face of God to others, but also to let others show the face of God to me. I love my Jamaica. Jamaica loves me. – Isabelle Tyshing ’16

München
It was a whirlwind European spring break journey for 16 student travelers. The exciting title, “From Archdukes to Emperors,” was just a hint of what they would discover in their trip through Munich, Prague, Budapest, Vienna, and Salzburg. They visited concentration camps, castles and opera houses. And then there was breaking bread, German-style. “Food in Europe gives you a literal taste of what Europeans are about,” says recent grad Hope Thomas, who points to the pretzels, the wiener schnitzel, the strudels. “But what I enjoyed most was how food brings people together. I found myself amidst good conversation at every meal, and hope that more people adopt both the European food and the customs that come with it.

Cindy Kahan
Cindy Kahan retired from the Middle School in June. She came to Holy Child in 2001, after completing her graduate degree in education at Catholic University. She began her career as a social worker, helping children and families within foster care. From there, she moved into a different field, becoming vice president at Public Technology, a nonprofit organization that helped city and county governments apply technology to local government, involved overseeing the development of everything from waste-water treatment to human services. Her experiences made for an energetic sixth grade classroom.
Kathy Famulare Even in her first interview back in 2007, Kathy Famulare, then a special education teacher, knew Holy Child was where she belonged. Here was an opportunity to create a program to serve those with different learning styles, and she was excited to begin. Eight years later, the Academic Support Center has grown to support all students in all grade levels, with five learning specialists. “Ms. Famulare is an amazing person to help you get organized,” says sophomore Abbey Titus. “She is also great around exam time. Even in Middle School, she would come to class before finals and hand out papers to help us manage our study habits.”
A Mazeing Day Box of tubes, tape, cups, colorful accessories + engaged thinkers = a cool marble maze. Once again, the spring “Marble Challenge” challenged seven Middle School teams to create a maze to win a variety of awards: slowest run, most complicated, most beautiful, all-around best, and more. The biggest prize for all was the accomplishments of taking risks, solving problems, and seeing your machine actually work!
“We would stand up and act out Romeo and Juliet, and we would sing and dance to remember our vocabulary words,“ says Maddy Hopkins, now a sophomore at Creighton University. “My favorite activity was when we designed and built parachutes that we attached to eggs.” “Holy Child’s philosophy,” Cindy says, “‘children learn best when they are happy, engaged, and using all of their senses’, has always encouraged me to develop thought-provoking and creative programs for our students.” Cindy is now in a new role, helping to launch the new senior internship program at Holy Child.
“Holy Child’s students have never had a stronger advocate than Kathy,” says Assistant Head of School Mary Hopkins. “They know she loves them and, for Kathy, they are willing to step up and put forth their strongest effort.”
PAPER TIGERS Technology is not just a modern concept, just ask the “Papyrus Man.” Making paper from this amazing plant is an ancient art that ecologist John Gaudet is bringing back to solve contemporary problems. In this workshop with the author of ”Papyrus, The Plant that Changed the World: From Ancient Egypt to Today’s Water Wars”, students got their hands dirty making their own custom pages, and held a 20-foot-long papyrus replica of the Egyptian “Book of the Dead”.
Kathy’s legacy is sure to be felt for decades to come, by those students who overcame learning issues and still found success in college and life. Her ties to the community have been strong as well: Her daughter Michelle, a graduate of Fordham University, is currently serving in the Jesuit Volunteer Corps; granddaughter Kylie is a thriving sophomore. Kathy beamed when discussing Holy Child’s impact on them. She believes all seeds of confidence and determination were planted during their time at Holy Child. “Holy Child is a place for everybody,” Kathy says, “You can really find your niche here.” She is now retired on the Amalfi Coast.
Joe McDermott Joe McDermott retired as facilities director after more than 30 years of service. He came to Holy Child after a successful career at the US Postal Service, managing an army of staff and equally large facilities. His tenure included taking down the old White House and managing the construction of Connelly Hall. He also oversaw the creation of the chapel and managed the development of the turf field complex. He did everything with a smile and his knowledge of the campus was “encyclopedic,” as one board member said. Most important, though, was how he treated others. “I was able to learn so much from him. He always had a good attitude, great sense of humor…willing to share work experiences,” says facilities colleague Javier Guzman. “He was always showing that he was the leader, but in a nice way.”

You think you won’t use algebra ever again. So when Mark Love, the founder and CEO of Engineers Teaching Algebra challenged Middle School classes to solve a traffic distribution problem, they found out that real life solutions are found in math. The girls were thrilled at their success!
More than a dozen third and fourth graders got a great taste of the Holy Child learning style at a spring “MakerDay,” complete with pizza party. One group completed their own marble maze; the other raced their originally designed balloon cars. The variety of solutions was amazing! They took home a personalized, 3D-printed tiger gift and a sense of accomplishment and camaraderie.

Actions not Words is the heartbeat of a Holy Child education. It’s the motto that our foundress Cornelia Connelly exemplified so well – step out of the classroom and apply your knowledge and skills through a life of service to everyone you encounter. Here are some reflections of where the “actions not words” motto took students this summer. Lilly Kishore ‘17 traveled to Jacmel, Haiti, through an organization called Community Coalition for Haiti. “One of the reasons I went to Haiti was to stress and encourage the importance of education starting from a young age,” she said. “So before traveling, I had the idea of writing an alphabet book for schools in Jacmel.”
Students, alumnae, and faculty members participated in Encounter the Gospel of Life (EGL), a service and retreat experience at the University of Maryland. “At Encounter, students discover the gifts God has given them and learn how to share them to better the world,” said Maddy Hopkins ‘14, who has attended for three years. The camp serves the needy areas of DC and Maryland. “I was most impressed this summer with the fact that we had students ranging in age from the classes of 2013 - 2019,” said Assistant Head of School Mary Hopkins. “The girls formed strong cross grade level friendships and truly discovered the meaning of the word ‘sisterhood.’”
Tyler Johnson ‘17 attended a program called Wilderness Intensive Leadership Development (WILD), a two-year counselor in training program in Jackman, Maine. She spent four weeks alongside ten others in the wild, learning skills of survival which helped her to prepare for a night alone on an island. Ultimately, Tyler says the best takeaway from this experience was, “my relationship with Christ grew stronger because of all the challenges I faced. The hardest thing now is waiting a full year to go back again!”
Lilly created the book to emphasize the importance of literature. “The book is in Haitian-Creole and provides children with basic vocabulary words,” she said. “On the back of each page of the book are lines where the children can practice spelling and writing the word. I also thought it would be a cool idea to have elementary school students from a school in the US color one of the books so that kids in Haiti could be connected to children here. When in Haiti, I went to four schools and an orphanage and was able to meet with the teachers and they were able to edit the book, so I could implement their changes and send them multiple copies back. The children also colored pages of the book so each school could have their own special copy. I have made about 70 books total. “I believe that my relationship with God was strengthened on this trip because I was able to realize how lucky and blessed I was. Our world is a beautiful place in the sense of the things we can see and cannot see. I gained so much from this incredible experience.”
Sofia Alpizar ‘16 spent her summer interning with the Costa Rican Embassy, the embassy of her home country. “Working at the embassy was like being at a home away from home,” she said. “The experience gave me the opportunity to take a glance at my preferred field of study, international affairs, and to work alongside diplomatic professionals.”
Lilly plans to keep contributing her time and resources to Haiti even after the book is finished.
Rachel Burley ‘16 spent eight days at a sleep away camp for underprivileged children in Romania. During that time in Romania, she volunteered at an orphanage for disabled children and helped a family rebuild their home. “Romania was a life changing experience,” she said. “I got to see how grateful and happy these kids are although they don’t have much. They thanked God for every little thing that happened to them, like the opportunity to go to camp. Going there made me realize how grateful I should be for what I have and that I should praise God everyday for everything He has provided me.”

Juniors Molly Reyda, Katie Mann and Megan Mann were all involved in a month-long Counselors in Training (CIT) program at the YMCA Camp Coniston in Grantham, NH. The training involved travel and specialized instruction in outdoor activities like sailing, archery, canoeing and hiking, with the focus on team building. “This experience was challenging but extremely rewarding, Katie said. “I had the opportunity to try new things and learn from other people. It made me feel like a leader and more confident.”

STEM has been a buzzword in education for years now, bundling the career paths in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines with the ongoing need for an increased number of skilled workers in these growing arenas. Technology, in particular, demands a wide range of capabilities, in communication and problem-solving along with technical savvy.

It is a sad fact that women are woefully under-represented in STEM careers, despite the fact that they are entering science and tech college majors and medical schools in increasing numbers. Leaving out half of our population–the innovative and creative thinkers of the world–does a disservice to the important work that is necessary to sustain our modern world. As educators of young women, we have a deep responsibility to encourage, support, prepare, and guide students to develop the skills necessary to fill that vacuum. Holy Child has been actively innovating to incorporate these elements into our curriculum. So, with great excitement, Mary Hopkins, assistant head of school, and I attended a fascinating conference this past June. “From STEM to STEAM – Girls’ Schools Leading the Way” was presented in Richmond by the National Coalition of Girls Schools, and focused the national conversation on not only working on girls and STEM, but how to make STEAM the operative guiding force for girls’ education. It was a wonderful opportunity to brainstorm with colleagues from not only all over the country, but all over the world. Girls’ schools are “leading the way” in terms of challenging and inspiring young women to make a difference in the world of STEAM. From “start-up weekends” and community makerspace connections to design technology curriculums and using robotics to teach content in the classroom, girls’ schools are inspiring young women to take chances and connect with the STEM world throughout their time in school. Breaking down stereotypes and encouraging young women to enter these fields is the key to success. One of the recurring themes was the need for a space for students to create and innovate, commonly known as a makerspace. Over the past few years, Holy Child has taken small steps toward this, using a 3D printer and virtual reality glasses in the computer lab. Now a formal makerspace is being created to reinforce building and problem-solving skills as critical skill. This dedicated space, an offshoot of our library, will cultivate a culture of innovation and exploration and a space for girls to work with their hands, to create and take risks and create in real time. Available to students for projects, or just to stop by and tinker, it will also offer the opportunity for Holy Child to develop an engineering or innovation elective. The conference also stressed community connections and partnerships, allowing students to engage with businesses, and solving real problems. Holy Child’s Senior Internship Program, which kicks off in earnest in the spring of 2016, requires all seniors to spend time at a professional site. STEM companies are being courted to increase the opportunities for our students.

CLASSROOM CHALLENGES, STUDENT SUCCESSES “Building Up STEAM” was a major theme this past year at Holy Child, engaging students in class, and engaging them with speakers and a wide range of activities our students through in-class, extracurricular, and evening activities. This series of events amplified the dialogue with our students regarding STEAM careers and the skills necessary to pursue them. Making students aware of the possibilities and what these careers actually look like in their daily activities inspire, and break down stereotypes, specifically those surrounding women. Highlighting the paths to these careers, though they may seem unlikely, can “demystify the success” as Maria Klawe, president of Harvey Mudd College, describes it. But it’s what goes on in the classroom daily that will deliver the most results. A truly interdisciplinary education utilizes the skills necessary for all of these disciplines, a concept that was reinforced at the conference. “This integration is important,” says Mary Hopkins. “The more pathways to a concept, the more likely students are to learn it. The addition of the arts is also a natural fit with the educational philosophy of Cornelia Connelly, which infuses all of our work here.” My students experienced a wide range of interdisciplinary connections first-hand through various projects in Honors Geometry. The first graces the halls of the main building on campus. The students created their own “tessellations” after learning about transformations as they are defined in geometry and after a mini-lesson from Fine Arts Teacher Sonya Payne. The project-based learning model was also incorporated in the same Honors Geometry class through the Arch Project. As teams the students were challenged to build an arch out of cardboard by designing, calculating, assembling, and decorating voussoirs—a wedge-shaped “block”—that fit together and stand with no adhesive in between. Through cooperative group work, the students were able to determine the appropriate calculations, measure, and mass produce the eleven voussoirs necessary for their arch, complete with a theme and decorations. Even with having to manage a budget for materials, with fines, the students got very creative, both in construction and reporting about their progress on Instagram and the class blog. (Follow them at @HCValis for more images.) Students were also exposed to the profession of engineering and the variety of options that exist for women in these professions. As an educator, I love the opportunity that I have to engage students with broad concepts and skills that will prepare them for future careers. Convincing students that seemingly different content can have meaningful connections prepares students for the diverse world around us. As we know, engaged, excited students learn better, and the excitement on both of these projects was contagious! – by Math Teacher Kaitlyn Valis. She teaches Honors Geometry as well as Pre-Calculus. Using both sides of her brain on a daily basis, she is also the Yearbook advisor and our Upper School class scheduler.

Alumna of the Year Adding up education and money translates into new ways to serve others Her classmate, Giovanna Vidoli, says it best: “Joanna is incredibly smart, a loyal friend, and exemplifies everything Holy Child young women should aspire to.”
Dear Alumnae, I am excited to embark on my second year as alumnae president! Last year was a momentous year as we welcomed Dr. Shannon Gomez as our Head of School. Dr. Gomez is busy making a handful of changes to our school, but she’s very committed to maintaining all the traditions that make Holy Child so special. I am looking forward to seeing you at the many opportunities available to return back to campus: Mayfield Market in November, the Tiger Trot in the spring. If you cannot get back to campus, there are other wonderful annual events just for our alumnae–the Alumnae Champagne Brunch, at the end of January, is one of my favorites. This past spring, we held a very successful young alumnae happy hour downtown; we’re working on another for this fall. Stay tuned for more information. Your commitment to The Fund for Holy Child last year was truly appreciated. We were able to raise $76,211 from alumnae, an increase from the previous year, with 12 percent of our alumnae participating. There were 28 first-time donors, and 148 increased their donation amount from the year before! Support continues to keep Holy Child’s traditions alive year after year. Your participation truly makes a difference. We all love to see each other! The camaraderie and spirit of Holy Child is what made me want to come here years ago. Your ideas and insights are so important, so do plan to come to events as well as the alumnae meetings. Share your ideas, suggestions, milestones, and memories, all of which are not just welcome, they are essential! I look forward to seeing all of you soon. Go Tigers! Since then, she has spent more than a dozen years in community development, primarily in the finance end with Habitat for Humanity affiliates and HUD, among others. Whether in her role on the D2D Fund or on the boards of the Maryland Consumer Rights Coalition and the Maryland CASH campaign, she has consistently demonstrated what it means to be a Christian community leader by applying her education to improve lives with long-term solutions. Our girls are fortunate to have such a role model.
Positively Speaking You might have seen the poster in Barnes and Noble this spring touting the appearance of “The Positively Present Guide to Life” author Dani Dipirro ‘01. We asked her a few questions about a positive life. Q: Can you tell us a little bit about your career? A: After graduate school at CalState Fullerton [undergrad was at UMD), I started my career in corporate communications and marketing—in biotech and wealth management—but I wasn’t passionate about what I was doing. After three years of writing a blog, PositivelyPresent.com, I decided to leave my job and work on Positively Present [the book] full-time. I also started working in graphic design, first just for myself, later for clients via my studio, Twenty3. It was so exciting to create and illustrate the “2015 Every Day Matters Planner.” [The 2016 version is now available.] Q: What inspired you to blog about positivity? A: In 2009, I’d reached a low point in my life. I was unhappy with my job, my relationships, and where I was in my life. I knew I needed a change and, after much soul-searching, I decided that what I truly needed was to be more positive and more present, two things I struggled with quite a bit. Because I’d always been a writer, I decided to start a blog to share my experiences with trying to live more positively. Q: How did the book come about? A: About a year after I left my full-time job, I was contacted by a publisher to write my book. Receiving a contract was certainly one of the top highlights of my career. Q: Did Holy Child help foster your writing, entrepreneurship, and overall positive attitude? A: Absolutely! I’ve always wanted to be a writer, but in high school my writing really began to flourish. I remember being asked to keep a daily journal and that assignment really inspired me to write on a daily basis. I still have that journal; it’s fascinating to go back to it and reflect on where I was at that point in my life. I can also recall an assignment that involved writing a short story. I remember sharing it with my friends (in the senior lounge!) as I was writing it and loving the feeling of seeing others so excited to know how the story would end. I made lifelong friends at Holy Child and arrived at college feeling prepared for the academic workload and confident in my abilities to achieve my goals. Q: Do you have any advice for young writers and entrepreneurs? A: Read and write as much as possible. The more you do something, the better you become at it. Write every single day, even if it’s just a few sentences. And read, read, read. The more you read–and it doesn’t matter what you read, so long as you’re exposed to good writing–the better you become at writing. As for young entrepreneurs, my advice is to do something you love. Whatever you’re really passionate about, that’s what you should do because that’s where you’ll truly excel. Also, don’t listen to the haters. People will always doubt those who don’t follow the stereotypical career path. Ignore the people who don’t believe in you and surround yourself with encouraging, supportive people. Q: What are your goals for the future? A: I hope to write more books and continue expanding my design studio, Twenty3. I love developing and sharing inspirational content and designs and I look forward to exploring new ways to share my words and designs in the future.
The Long Drive to Success In the final moments of the 1999 Colorado Women’s Open, seasoned golfer Shannon Hanley ‘86 kept a clear and collected head as she prepared for her final hole. She set up her tee as hundreds of spectators looked on silently; the crowd cheered as her clean swing put the ball a foot away from the hole. She didn’t fully accept the win until she sank the putt, sealing her victory. What fulfilled Shannon most during that joyous moment was catching her father’s beaming face in the crowd. “My dad totally surprised me. I had no idea he was coming. He watched me win, then flew home to hold my niece, Gabrielle, who was born that day. It was a pretty special day for our family.” It was a very special moment for Shannon, who played professionally for almost a decade after graduating from James Madison University. She was on the women’s tour in Asia, Europe, as well as over the U.S. Since then, she’s been an avid golfer and instructor in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. This May, she celebrated the grand opening of Change Your Numbers, a golf performance studio where golfers of all ages and levels can improve their performance with help from Shannon and her diverse team of professionals. In addition to golf technique, the studio offers yoga, Pilates, power lifting, strength training, and even has a sports psychologist and nutritionist on staff. Shannon is grateful that Holy Child instilled in her a love of athletics and entrepreneurship: “All the things that make me up started from my roots at Holy Child.” She is glad her three nieces—Gabrielle ’18, Jillian ’20, and Georgia Hanley ’22—are also sharing in the Holy Child experience as well-rounded athletes. Though they spend more time playing field hockey and basketball if Aunt Shannon has anything to say about it, they’ll turn their golf hobby into a lifelong love, just like her.

Fund YOU are a difference maker. You understand that your resources make the strongest impact when they’re directed toward a person, when it changes a life. The Fund Forward intiative is aimed at just that. There are families with great needs who would otherwise be unable to send their daughters to Holy Child. Sometimes the need is because of a family circumstance or hardship well beyond the normal course of life. Sometimes it’s that constant struggle to make ends meet. We invite you to take the challenge and invest in the future of a Holy Child student and provide her a path full of opportunities.
“My father immigrated from Guatemala, and as a single dad, raised me to believe in the American Dream. Holy Child provided the financial aid that allowed me to receive an excellent education that continued as I attended Fairfield University. I doublemajored in political science and history, and minored in four different subjects, all while working two part-time jobs and dedicating my free time volunteering at an after-school inner-city tutoring program. I graduated in three years. Today, I work for one of the top three lobbying firms in Washington, D.C. When Karly Siciliano ’04 heads to the kitchen she’s exercising her passion and her talents. Simple ingredients drive her, starting with fresh hand-cut pasta, kneaded between two floury hands, followed by a simple but pivotal sauce, a fragrant combination of garlic, chili, and olive oil, and topped with fresh herbs. This meal would please anyone on the planet, but especially draws in her Italian neighbors, who flock to the young chef, despite her American heritage. Now her cooking is also her profession. She founded Italian Taste in 2013 in the heart of Florence, now her hometown. “I never thought I would have ended up becoming a chef,” she says. “I graduated from The Indian University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor’s degree in hospitality. After learning the business side of restaurants, I needed to know what was happening in the kitchen to ensure good cost control. That’s when I realized I had a strong curiosity to explore Italian cooking.” After she earned her master’s degree in Italian cuisine and design from The Apicius International School of Hospitality, she worked her way up to the head chef position at the one of Florence’s renowned restaurants, La Buca dell’Orafo, just down the street from the Uffizi Gallery. From there, she returned to Apicius, this time as a teacher. After years of working for and teaching others, she decided to exercise her own skills, and started Italian Taste.
Cooking has long been a deep-seated passion for Karly, fueled by fond childhood memories of cooking with her uncle, Olindo Siciliano. Olindo owned and operated an Italian restaurant in New Jersey, and he would grace Karly’s kitchen with authentic Italian products. “During his visits, he taught me how to build flavors using basic cooking techniques,” Karly remembers. “He showed me that food could be a way to express love for the people around you, a concept that I use every day of my life.” The most gratifying aspect of Karly’s job is seeing the positive reactions of her customers as they take the first bite of her food. And she is thankful that the attitude towards food was positive in high school: “When I was a student at Holy Child,” she says, “we were encouraged to eat. They made it a priority to create a healthy relationship between women and food, something that society did not do at the time.” Although she still travels home a few times a year to see her parents and four siblings, and to appease her Mexican food cravings, Italy is now her home. If we’re lucky, her next venture will be an “Italian Taste” cooking show, so we’ll all get a taste of her culinary wisdom.
Other alumnae have also cooked up businesses around food.

Baby number two was ready to make her appearance, and Jessi Williams ’01 (now Frend) rushed in to Holy Cross hospital for the delivery. On arrival, she was comforted to find a Holy Child alumna, Kelly Decker ’08 (now Shires) there at the check-in desk. They knew each other through the alumnae association, but met through siblings; Kelly’s sister, Susan Decker Raff ‘01, and Jessi’s sister, Allie Williams ‘08. They had spoken about how special it would be to have a Holy Child sister deliver Jack Frend’s little sister. But they couldn’t find a way to make it happen. Now fate intervened, and Jessi couldn’t have been happier.
It’s hard to walk into any D.C. area hospital and not find a Holy Child student who followed their passion into the medical field.
“Delivering your baby is a very exciting but also an emotionally overwhelming time,” says Jessi. “It was incredibly comforting to have a fellow alum by my side reassuring me and helping me stay comfortable. Kelly made the experience so special. She has a wonderful sense of humor and kept me calm and laughing through most of my delivery. Kelly is fabulous at her job and I feel so blessed that she was there as Libby entered the world.”
“Being able to work so closely with a fellow Holy Child alum has been a great experience!” Caroline says. “Even though we never really interacted during our shared time at Holy Child, once we found out we were both alumnae, we had an instant bond. She has become one of my most trusted co-workers.”
Kelly loves her job because of the joy she experiences while bringing life into the world. A graduate of University of Kentucky with a degree in nursing, Kelly began her career at Holy Cross Hospital in January 2013 in the labor unit. Her penchant for science was encouraged during her time at Holy Child. “I think Holy Child does a great job of helping to find that niche that a girl thrives in. For me, it was always science. I loved it from the time I was a kid, but Holy Child definitely let me explore that and take a lot of science classes.” She was led to nursing from seeing the care of a family member, but, she says, “I never would have made it through the nursing prerequisites or been accepted into the nursing program at UK without the strong work ethic Holy Child taught me!”

Dear Holy Child Community, Thank you for making 2014-2015 a very successful year. As the school began a new era under the leadership of Dr. Gomez, we faced, together, numerous changes and a number of challenges, with the promise of more to come. Our community welcomed the changes, supporting many and working constructively to further refine some others. I was very proud, as a Holy Child parent and trustee, of how we approached this new era, being actively involved in implementing and shaping change, but protecting the core of what makes Holy Child special for our girls. This strong sense of community and willingness to be involved in Holy Child will be invaluable as we begin the process of strategic planning and as we continue to make Holy Child even more special. I look forward to a very exciting and promising 2015-2016 academic year. Sean Glynn Chair, Board of Trustees

Paying It Forward The “Holy Child After Dark” Gala was dubbed “the event of the year,” both before and after, with its offers of everything from tropical getaways to White House chef dinners. The bidding paddles rose regularly, but at no time more than when extraordinary alumna Ericka Rojas (’05) told her story. Her “Fund-A-Scholar” speech raised more than $70,000 for student scholarships in a matter of minutes. Ericka related the tale of her father, Edwin Rojas, who emigrated from Guatemala and worked hard every day at Congressional Country Club, while raising Ericka single-handedly. He was hoping to send his daughter to the idyllic school across the street. It was his sheer determination, Ericka’s good grades, and a host of donations from Holy Child families that turned Mr. Rojas’ dream—and his daughter’s--into reality. After graduating from Fairfield University with a double major in political science and history, Ericka has cultivated a successful career on Capitol Hill as a congressional aide/lobbyist. She proudly displays her graduation mug on her desk, honoring the gift that she was given, and encouraging other to support those less than fortunate to experience the nurturing of Holy Child. A new generation of students will thank her and the families that made their futures possible.

year at Holy Child.
This year, the co-chairs of The Fund for Holy Child–Ellen Kumm, Graciela Garcia, and Cindy Kahan–set an impressive bar for faculty-staff participation: 100 percent. Not only did we meet the goal, with each and every single faculty and staff member donating to the annual fund, but it was complete before Halloween. It’s been said that everyone believes in what we do here; well, here’s the proof. Not only are we committed to the learning in the classroom, but all are determined to enhance our learning tools and technology to promote the growth of our young women. All of us give our knowledge, time, and love, but this year, the faculty and staff also opened their wallets and set a wonderful example of giving back, not only for our young women, but for the entire Holy Child community.

Volunteer Extraordinare If there was balloons to be bought, a team dinner to arrange, a gift to be selected, you could always count on Louise O’Berry to be there at the ready. A dedicated soccer and lacrosse mom, it was a natural for her to be president of the Tiger Club in Caitlyn’s senior year. What you may not have seen is her work as a classroom rep (multiple years) on the Development, Gala and Tiger Trot committees. She was just a phone call away whenever the Development Office needed assistance. We were happy to award Louise our Volunteer of the Year Award at the Annual Volunteer Luncheon this May, given to a parent, grandparent, or friend as a small gesture to recognize the time, talent, and enthusiasm displayed over the years. Her support, and that of so many others, are what makes our mission possible. Louise is just one of an army of volunteers, providing treats for Back-to-School Nights and parent/teacher conferences, stuff and label envelopes, and provide a soup or salad for teacher appreciation lunches. We appreciate it all. However big or small the contribution, we could not do it without you!

You don’t always see the work of the Holy Child Parents Association; these dedicated moms (and dads) work behind the scenes. With the leadership of Parents Association President Janelle Lynch, activities like the Welcome Back to School carpool goodie bags are handed out and our monthly Teacher Appreciation lunches are organized and accomplished.
As a volunteer, you support Holy Child’s big events, including Mayfield Market, the Gala and Tiger Trot. You also provide meals and support when fellow Holy Child families are in need of physical or emotional encouragement. Thank you Parents Association!
Janelle also serves as moderator for our quarterly Coffee and Conversation series and creates the weekly Room Parents Sunday email. She’s not alone.
Not Words Second-year Holy Child Fathers Club President Augie Rios gets all fired up with passion when he speaks about dads and daughters, learning by example, and how you “get back what you give” Augie certainly has been passionate when it comes to the Fathers Club. From an ice-breaker bowling afternoon for our daughters to directing the parking at Mayfield Market and helping out at the Tiger Trot, the real crux of his passion is service.
That’s what the Fathers Club is really all about. Recognizing service beyond the school, the Fathers Club sponsors a week of providing lunches and dinners, as well as serving the residents, for the Wilkins Avenue Women’s Shelter. The Fathers Club uses the Father/Daughter Communion breakfast to award certificates of service for students involved in charitible clubs. Thank you Fathers Club!

2015 Gala
You wouldn’t have recognized the gym after it was transformed into the classy, cool TIGER LOUNGE for the annual gala, raising more than $250,000, with $70,000 for scholarships alone. The decorations and the vibe, plus the addition of the “red carpet” and the after-hour outside cigar bar, made this one of our most successful galas ever!

New Classrooms for Today’s Holy Child Student
In order to empower and educate young women of the 21st century and beyond, we need to provide a space for project work, group presentations, and individual study and research. The interactive classroom allows for teamwork at a computer, demonstration areas, and labs and workshops for experiments and design projects. The physical environment for learning must meet the challenge of becoming more flexible to accommodate a wider variety of student, teacher and technology interactions and activities.
