In order to gain a better understanding of ‘air’ , we were assigned to create an attribute list of air. By creating a list of words that describe air, we can more easily visually display air and we can represent these qualities when creating visual layouts.

CONCEPT SKETCHES
11
In this stage of the project, I really wanted to display air in as many ways as I possibly could, but also follow the themes and mood I had discovered in the previous exercise. By following different compositional strategies and exploring themes of air such as “peaceful” “flow” and “constant”, I came up with the following layout sketches.

CRITIQUE
- This thumbnail shows the most potential - Avoid too many symbols - Make sure too many symbols don’t crowd the primary ‘swoosh’ - Experiment with transparency - More saturated/opaque symbols on bottom -Increase transparency through middle and top of composition

-Overall, too much repetition (creates a sense of rhythm); more variation in the placement of symbols would make composition more interesting

Overall, too many symbols (especially the white outline symbols) make the composition too distracting and strays away from the theme of air. Makes it too busy - whilst trying to go for a more simple and clean theme.

CONCLUSION
25
In conclusion, after completing this project I got to discover the various ways a single concept (such as air) could be shown, and the numerous steps it takes to get to the final product. I realized how crucial truly understanding the concept being shown is, because due to the process of mind-mapping and brainstorming I had a better understanding of air, and could more easily visually display ‘air’. I realized through this project that correct placement of symbols (in a way that pleases the eye) is extremely crucial and can be discovered through experimenting and critique. I enjoyed seeing how the final product came to be; even though it took several attempts and layouts, it was nice to finally see a product that fits just right. It was also interesting to see how a single concept came to life after research and a few hand-drawn sketches. My only con for this project would be perhaps for me to create even more layout designs and have an even better understanding of my theme air so I can create a product that fits even more with my element. I am very satisfied with how my design came out and I now have a better understanding on how to visually translate ideas into products and how to use the software as well.
