TO HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN DRESS Every issue harajuku-ko will try to give to some DIY instructions. This is a step by step guide to how to make your dress. how to make yourw own dress Making your own dress is very, very simple. This one cheat trick will show you how to make your own dress. We are going to take an existing dress and use it as a pattern and copy it to make our new original dress. I will be using a dress and going to make a similar fitting one in a pink and white candy stripes. I’ve got my fabric which, measures a meter in width and I’ve got three meters in length. I’ve folded my fabric in half, along the long side so the width measures half a meter. I’ve then folded it in half on the length.
so now it measures 1 and half meters in length. I then laid my fabric and laid my dress on top. The middle of the dress in height, lines up with the long fold and the top of the dress lines up with the fold in the width. You then draw around the dress and cut it out. Make you to cut around carefully and leave extra room for stitching, finishing and mistakes. You should end up with an apron, which goes over your shoulders. The only stitching you should have are the sides. I then stitched the dress in both sides and hemmed the neckline.
For ease of use I’ve added a zip to one side of the dress. For the embellishments I’ve attached a border of ice creams and cakes to go along with my candy stripe theme. To make it look more professional I’ve added a few buttons on the chest area. The buttons are simple fabric covered buttons, which you can get from your local haberdashery. To finish the look we’ve paired it with a pair of fluffy cat ears, detailing pink ribbons and jingle bells, a white short sleeve blouse, knee high socks and a pair of black platform club heel shoes.

Sebastian Masuda’s “Colorful Rebellion”
“
Sebastian’s next act will be the debut of his fine art career with an exhibition in New York City.
These past few years, I have always challenged myself to step out of Harajuku, in which I have worked for almost 20 years, and strived to make my creations hold up to world standards, and in other genres. Whatever my output, the context for my productions remains the “Harajuku kawaii culture.” Although recently, what people have focused on has been the easily understandable originality and flamboyance of its exterior, the first peculiarity of the town of Harajuku has always been the fact that it is a place in which people can express themselves freely without any interference from others. There is also a certain individual earnestness that everybody has in the background. I think that this is the reason why it was able to birth such an original culture, not found anywhere else in the world.
Sebastian Masuda is one of Japan’s top evangelists of kawaii culture. In addition to launching 6%DOKIDOKI – his iconic “Sensational Kawaii” shop and brand – in Harajuku almost 20 years ago, Sebastian has hosted countless kawaii-centric events and talk shows around Tokyo, created campaigns and kawaii visuals for some of Japan’s top brands, designed sets for film and theater, and even helped to launch the career of kawaii superstar Kyary Pamyu Pamyu. Sebastian’s “Colorful Rebellion – Seventh Nightmare” exhibition runs from February 27, 2014 through March 29, 2014 at KiangaEllis Projects in Chelsea. The theme of the show is “The Seven Deadly Sins of Sebastian Masuda”. Sebastian will be attending the opening of the show, as well as presenting daily special performances at the gallery from 3/6 (Thurs.) to 3/9 (Sun.). If you’re going to be anywhere near New York in late February or early March, this will be a chance to not only meet Sebastian Masuda, but also to be a part of his New York art debut.
In this exhibition, I will be showcasing works that will show the still-expanding Harajuku kawaii culture not from the “outside,” as other works have done until now, but rather from the “inside…” I will create a “Colorful Rebellion,” as a kind of “self-portrait” that draws the minimum amount of attention to me. Its theme is the self, conscious of being at the crossroads of the present, past, and future. From the period of 3/6 (Thurs.) to 3/9 (Sun.), which is the Armory Show, my alter ego will appear in the exhibition space and complete the “Seven Deadly Sins.” (I will not reveal what the concept or classification of these seven is before the exhibition.) Now, having in no small way become able to express the world that I want to show, I will try to convey an essential part of the Harajuku kawaii culture to a greater number of people and, what is more, do so in the “major leagues” of art that is New York, a place where I am completely unknown. As I have always planned my life on my own terms and cut my path through sheer willpower, like some sort of wild grass, I want to cut a new start for myself as I turn towards this new step in 2014.

MEIJI SHRINE ONE OF THE MUST GOs Well let know, all about where we’ve been this time in Japan. So when your there, you’ll know where to go. Meji Jingu (shrine) is a Shinto shrine. Shinto is a Japanese ancient oriental religion, and is a deep tradition in the lives of the Japanese. The shrine is dedicated to the divine souls of Emperor Meji and his consort Empress Shoken. Emperor Meji passed away in 1912 and Empress Shoken in 1914.
After their passing, people wished to commemorate their virtues and venerate them forever. So they donated 100,000 trees from all over Japan and from overseas and they worked voluntarily to create this forest. This shrine was established on November 1st 1920.
Address: 1-1 Yoyogikamizonocho, Shibuya, Tokyo 151-8557
Meiji Shrine is located in a forest that covers an area of 700,000 square-meters (about 175 acres). This area is covered by an evergreen forest that consists of 120,000 trees of 365 different species, which were donated by people from all parts of Japan when the shrine was established. The forest is visited by many as a recreation and relaxation area in the center of Tokyo. The shrine itself is composed of two major areas: The Naien is the inner precinct, which is centered on the shrine buildings and includes a treasure museum that houses articles of the Emperor and Empress. The treasure museum is built in the Azekurazukuri style.
The Gaien is the outer precinct, which includes the Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery that houses a collection of 80 large murals illustrative of the events in the lives of the Emperor and his consort. It also includes a variety of sports facilities, including the National Stadium (Meiji Jingu Gaien Stadium and later, since 1956, on the same site Tokyo Olympic Stadium), the Meiji Memorial Hall, which was originally used for governmental meetings, including discussions surrounding the drafting of the Meiji Constitution in the late 19th century. Today it is used for Shinto weddings.

WHAT WE’VE BEEN WATCHING THIS SEASON Every issue we’ll let you guys know what we’ve been up to on our scrrens and give you a review of the animes, music and drama.
Beyond the Boundary ( anime ) The series starts of with Mirai tricking Akihito but trying to pretend to kill herself and when Akihito come over to save her life she she quickly draws her blood out of her hand and solidifies it to make a sword and stabs Akihito. At this moment she finds out he’s immortal, he a half ‘youm’ which are these bad spirits and only people blessed with power to kill them can see just like Mirai. She then joins the book club which also happens to be Akihito’ club, so she try to kill him. Her trying to kill him every day, makes them become friends.
In this universe the spirit hunters have special abilities and when they kill a Youm it turns into a rock the rock then gets sold in exchange for money. Mirai is still young and was never trained so she can only kill low level youms and because of the she doesn’t get much money. She often relays on Akihito to lend her money for food, and through this their friendship starts to evolve into something else. Go and watch this and see what happens … spoiler alert! there is a major plot twist towards the end.
Samurai Flamenco (anime)
Samurai Flamenco is a typical shonen anime. Its Funny, its got action, some thrill and sometimes it gets a bit serious. We follow the story of Masayoshi Hazama who is a model and want to become a super hero. As a young boy he became inspired by his favourite superhero and wanted to become just like him. The series begin with him trying to be a vigilante superhero, telling people about not throwing garbage everywhere and towards the end it leads to a much bigger job. Along the way he finds out at he’s not the only one. If you enjoyed watching tiger and bunny you would certainly like watching this.
Kuroko no Basuke ( anime ) I’ve recently starting watching Kuroko no Basuke. Kuroko no Basuke (anime) was originally a Japanese sport manga written and illustrated by Tadatoshi Fujimaki. A highschool basketball team is trying to it to the Nationals and the beat the basketball prodigies who rose to the top when they were in Junior High, known as The Generation of Miracles. After Junior High School ended they all went to separate High schools with top basketball teams. However not many people know that there was another player alongside The Generation of Miracles, a Phantom Sixth Man known as Tetsuya Kuroko.
Mischievous Kiss: Love in Tokyo ( Japanese Drama )
I have been following Mischievous Kiss: Love in Tokyo. The series is a Japanese drama based on a Japanese manga/ anime called Itazura Na Kiss written by Tada Kaoru. Aihara Kotoko is not that bright and struggles with her school work. She is in class F, the bottom class in her grade. However Kotoko has been in love with the smartest and most handsome guy in the school Irie Naoki ever since she saw him give a speech at the high school entrance ceremony. Kotoko decides to write a love letter to him but is rejected in front of the whole school, Irie does not even read her letter. On the same day Kotoko’s house collapses and she coincidently lives in the same house as Irie Naoki and his family. What will happen when fate takes over? Will Kotoko win his heart? I think that this is a really great live adaption of the original anime series. It is extremely funny, sweet and I am always longing to know what will happen next and if they will get any closer, there are also rivals and other people who try to get in the way of their relationship, this is a must for shojo and Itazura na Kiss fans.
Kuroko is now a freshman at Seirin High school. Alongside Taiga Kagami, a naturally talented player who spent most of Junior high in America they aim for Seirin High school basketball to be the top team in Japan, battling against The Generation of Miracles one by one. I would definitely recommend this anime it is comedic, has lovable characters, a great plot which keeps you on the edge of your seat and a brilliant soundtrack.

Japan in London
20th Century Japanese Prints Exhibition Our reporter Olivia went to the Henry Sotheran Ltd, to check out their latest exhibition
“It was a relaxing and enjoyable experience looking around the Sotheran.” The appearance of Henry Sotheran Ltd was a lot different then anticipated. Expecting a small quiet gallery space, we did not realise that Henry Sotheran Ltd was a booksellers specializing in ‘Fine books and prints’. The building itself is ‘Victorian Esque’ with an old fashioned clock hanging outside and is on Sackville Street, a five to ten minute walk from Piccidilly Circus tube station. It is not the most noticeable of buildings as we walked straight past it and had to walk back again. Sacksville street itself is a quiet and pleasant street for central London. When we entered the building it was like entering an emporium of wonders, a room full of hundreds of old books. Straight in front of us there were some narrow wooden stairs leading downstairs to where the fine prints are held. Above the stairs there were Japanese prints hanging, which indicated that there were more Japanese prints downstairs. When we came down the stairs we were greeted by the friendly members of staff. The room was very quiet and reminded me of a library or miniature museum. It was quite an odd place in comparison to upstairs which was busier and noisier, it’s almost as if the downstairs of Sotheran was in a world of its own. Sotheran was a pleasant place to look at artwork, there were no crowds of people pushing and shoving. There were books everywhere and quirky cabinets full of prints. Japanese woodblock prints, vintage prints, manga artworks and lithograph prints for sale alongside western artworks and prints. Woodblock range from £30.00-£810.00, while Manga prints range from £80.00- £110.00. As well as prints Sotheran also sold postcards and greetings cards and a catalog of the art featured downstairs for £3.00.
Tucked away in a tight corner there were storyboards from Hayao Miyazaki’s My Neighbour Totoro. These are not noticeable as you look round. You would have to look for them or know about them being at Sotheran to find them. There was a rack full of beautiful vintage Japanese advertisement posters for beer, alongside other articles. The space was too small, cluttered and the lighting was very dim. A lot more effort could have been put into displaying the prints so that they were noticeable to the audience. It was a relaxing and enjoyable experience looking around the Sotheran, opposed to looking around the bigger London art galleries. However it can be said that Sotheran is a lot more suitable for somebody who wants to buy fine prints, rather than someone who just wants to look at art.
Food
Few Places and Recipes for you to try We’ve got a few recipes lined up for you today Give them a go and see what you can make
Misato 11 Whitcomb Street London W1D 6PG United Kingdom Misato is great for people with a low budget and who want to fill up. Its cheep and cheerful food right in the middle of London that is good for when you are there and you need a quick affordable fix. It’s not always quick as during the lunch and dinner service its very buys and there’s always a queue. The portion sizes are very generous so, no matter how hungry you are you are bound to fill up. Its not a traditional Japanese restaurant but its close enough and sure serves up some good grub.
Eat Tokyo (Holborn) 50 Red Lion Street London WC1R 4PF You know a place is good when there is a queue outside the restaurant. All of its restaurants have a busy lunch service. They’ve got a few other branches apart from Holburn, please look at the directory below to see which one is the closest one to you. The food is reasonably priced, and they do more than your usual bento and rice bowl. They’ve got a good selection of sushi, so for all you sushi lovers out there this is a good spot. They’ve also got a large variety of vegetarian dishes since most of the Japanese restaurant food, tends to be fish or pork based. If you’re in London and are looking for an authentic Japanese restaurant then you should go to one of these.

PIKACHU ONIGIRI
First, shape your rice. You can use a rice mold if you have one.
If you do not have a rice mold, you can use a cling wrap to shape the rice.
Cut out a slice of seaweed so you can wrap it round the rice.
Use the seaweed as a guide to cut out a slice of cheese, to the same size.
Wrap them around your onigiris.
Punch out 2 circles for Pikachu’s cheeks. You can also use a straw to do this.
Then, cut out 2 circles with a round cutter, this is for the pokemon ball.
Cut off around 1/3 of the circle.
Rub on some red coloring. Then leave them in the fridge.
I’m using the yellow puncher to get pikachu’s mouth, and the green puncher to get his eyes.
Punch out the nori and add them on the cheese.
Assemble back the pokemon ball.
Cut out a strip of nori and add on the ball.
You have to punch out a small circle from the cheese and add on the nori strip.
Cut out pikachu’s ears using a toothpick.
If you are using egg sheets, you can use a pair of scissors to cut it out instead.
Add on the ears. AND YOU’RE DONE!
