Sebastian Masuda’s “Colorful Rebellion”

“

Sebastian’s next act will be the debut of his fine art career with an exhibition in New York City.

These past few years, I have always challenged myself to step out of Harajuku, in which I have worked for almost 20 years, and strived to make my creations hold up to world standards, and in other genres.

Whatever my output, the context for my productions remains the “Harajuku kawaii culture.” Although recently, what people have focused on has been the easily understandable originality and flamboyance of its exterior, the first peculiarity of the town of Harajuku has always been the fact that it is a place in which people can express themselves freely without any interference from others. There is also a certain individual earnestness that everybody has in the background. I think that this is the reason why it was able to birth such an original culture, not found anywhere else in the world.

Sebastian Masuda is one of Japan’s top evangelists of kawaii culture. In addition to launching 6%DOKIDOKI – his iconic “Sensational Kawaii” shop and brand – in Harajuku almost 20 years ago, Sebastian has hosted countless kawaii-centric events and talk shows around Tokyo, created campaigns and kawaii visuals for some of Japan’s top brands, designed sets for film and theater, and even helped to launch the career of kawaii superstar Kyary Pamyu Pamyu.

Sebastian’s “Colorful Rebellion – Seventh Nightmare” exhibition runs from February 27, 2014 through March 29, 2014 at KiangaEllis Projects in Chelsea. The theme of the show is “The Seven Deadly Sins of Sebastian Masuda”.

Sebastian will be attending the opening of the show, as well as presenting daily special performances at the gallery from 3/6 (Thurs.) to 3/9 (Sun.).

If you’re going to be anywhere near New York in late February or early March, this will be a chance to not only meet Sebastian Masuda, but also to be a part of his New York art debut.

In this exhibition, I will be showcasing works that will show the still-expanding Harajuku kawaii culture not from the “outside,” as other works have done until now, but rather from the “inside…”

I will create a “Colorful Rebellion,” as a kind of “self-portrait” that draws the minimum amount of attention to me. Its theme is the self, conscious of being at the crossroads of the present, past, and future. From the period of 3/6 (Thurs.) to 3/9 (Sun.), which is the Armory Show, my alter ego will appear in the exhibition space and complete the “Seven Deadly Sins.” (I will not reveal what the concept or classification of these seven is before the exhibition.)

Now, having in no small way become able to express the world that I want to show, I will try to convey an essential part of the Harajuku kawaii culture to a greater number of people and, what is more, do so in the “major leagues” of art that is New York, a place where I am completely unknown.

MEIJI SHRINE ONE OF THE MUST GOs Well let know, all about where we’ve been this time in Japan.

Meji Jingu is a Shinto shrine. Shinto is a Japanese ancient oriental religion, and is a deep tradition in the lives of the Japanese. The shrine is dedicated to the divine souls of Emperor Meji and his consort Empress Shoken. Emperor Meji passed away in 1912 and Empress Shoken in 1914. After their passing, people wished to commemorate their virtues and venerate them forever. So they donated 100,000 trees from all over Japan and from overseas and they worked voluntarily to create this forest. This shrine was established on November 1st 1920.

Laforet is a five minute walk from Omotesando Exit of Harajuku Station on the JR Yamanote Line and a one minute walk from Exit 5 of MejiJingumae station on the Tokyo Metro Fukutoshin and Chiyoda lines. There is a whole floor dedicated to Lolita on floor B1.5 F, featuring Lolita brands: ‘Alice and the Pirates’, ‘Angelic Pretty’, Metamorphose temps de fille, Maiso De Julietta, Swimmer, Putumayo, Atelier-Pierrot and h.Naoto .

I recommend going to this department store it is the best part of shopping in Harajuku, there is everything you need to complete your lolita look; clothes, acessories, makeup, etc and the staff are super kind and chatty in Angelic Pretty area. I brought a cute brown Angelic pretty top, matching skirt, high heeled wedge shoes and white frilly socks from here.

The energy source of this country is a giant diamond called the Sacred Diamond, which can only be created by princess Diancie. However, the current princess doesn't yet possess the power to create such a diamond, and the current Sacred Diamond's power is soon going to run out, which would result in the end of the country. Diancie meets up with Ash and Pikachu, and set off together with them to search for the legendary Pokemon Xerneas, which possesses sacred power, but on the way, they find the cocoon where the Destruction Pokémon, Yveltal, who was said to have once destroyed life in Kalos, lies in wait.

Kuroshitsuji: Book of Circus

Kuroshitsuji or black butler as we know it, returns to our screens with Yana Toboso’s demonic servant manga transformed into the latest TV anime series, subtitled ‘book of circus’. It was announce in January that a new Kuroshitsuji anime project is in works and will be released later on in the year, well we are delighted to announce that It will air at the beginning of July 2014 in the Animeism block, followed by the OVA subtitled ‘book of murder’ which will pre screen in the Japanese cinema in autumn 2014. It will adapt the Noah's Ark Circus Arc, picking the manga story back up from the point at which they diverged. This arc immediately follows the Curry Contest Arc in the manga, which ended at episode 15 in the first season of the anime.

Shirogane no Ishi Argevollen

The series brings us some mecha action for the season with some good production credits behind it. Coming from Zebec, it’s to be directed by Atsushi Ootsuki, recent of Kanokon, with scripts by Tatsuo Sato, a man who has some very good science fiction credits behind him with our favorite Shingu as well as Bodacious Space Pirates. The show is setting Yuichi Ouka to work on character designs and Hirame Kikuchi with Kenji Teraoka to handle the mecha design.

WHERE TO GO WHEN IN AKIHABARA Akihabara (秋葉原), is a district in central Tokyo which is famous for its electronic shops and because of that its also known as the electric town, maid cafes and many stores devoted to anime and manga.

The Gundam Cafe is a Mobile Suit Gundam series themed restaurant. The cafe serves Gundam themed dishes and is decorated with art from the series. There is also a gift shop where you can buy character goods and souveniers.

Maidreamin is a maid cafe, where Japanese girls dress up as maids and serve customers cute food, they also play video games with customers and give them innocent massages.

The AKB48 restaurant is next to the Gundam cafe and is a themed restaurant based on the pop idol group AKB48. The cafe serves food inspired by the idols and character goods are sold in the attached shop.

The cafe has a theatre where a rotating cast of AKB48 members perform daily during scheduled performance times.

Tokyo anime Super Potato Don Quixote center The Tokyo anime center is located on the fourth floor of the UDX Building of Akihabara Crossfield. It stages anime related exhibitions, hosts anime related events and contains a shop selling toys, stationary and other souvenirs.

Super potato sells all types of video games and video game consoles, and specializes in retro systems and games. Here there is a great selection of retro games and consoles for a fair price. I had my eye on the n64 and games. However, I did not buy it, there was no way I could take it back to England.

Don Quijote is a huge discount store chain that has almost everything in one building; toys, electronics, beauty, wigs and cosplay items. On the fifth floor of the store there is maid cafe @Home Cafe and on the eighth floor of the store the pop group AKB48 perform daily shows. I brought some cute false nails from here and a cute cosplay outfit.

THE BEST IN WESTERN TALENT Every issue, Harajuku-ko will be featuring our favourite work from artists inspired by anime, manga and games.

Kuridoki

Kuridoki also known as Vic Moey is a digital artist from Singapore and she loves all types of media arts. She specialize in Manga-style illustration and sometimes dabbles herself in caricature. She is a trained in graphic designer mainly working with web & print based media.

Her work is inspired by Shonen manga such as Naruto and music illustrations & graphics of Vocaloid and Miku Hatsune. She also likes Classic Lolita and draws her ideas from them, their clothing, there scene and fashion such as Victorique de Blois from GOSICK.

In her free time she loves to play on PSP, watch anime and read. Although you can’t tell from her work, but she is a massive gamer and loves games such as, MONSTER HUNTER! Final Fantasy Tactics and Tales of the Abyss.
