40th Anniversary Party
Larry & Liz Flynt
Soulville California Band Performed
HUSTLER’S 40th
anniversary extravaganza was a shoulder-to-shoulder roaring-fun event where guests dressed to impress in what else.... roaring ʻ20s attire. Coveted admittance to the lavish invitation-only party came in the form of black-and-gold jpeg invitations that arrived via email from HUSTLER magazine and the man himself, Larry Flynt. Quite fittingly, the elaborate party was held at the Los Angeles historic Park Plaza Hotel, across from MacArthur Park in downtown Los Angeles. Larry and his beautiful wife Liz pulled out all the stops to make sure guests were happy and entertained throughout the evening. Larry, wearing a white linen suit, held court from his famous gold-plated wheelchair, and Liz graciously greeted guests as they entered the main room David Loftus, ‘Dear Abby’ Jeanne Phillips, Liz, Howard Metz Liz with Fiona & Dr. Joel Aronowitz which was adorned with flapper-dressed women carrying long, over-sized cigarette holders, wearing champagne skirts, and offering guests glasses of divine sparkling wine. Amid a flurry of security and body guards, guests enjoyed mingling, eating, drinking and getting a full dose of the entertainment, which included a fabulous band and pole dancers in various stages of undress in and out of ornate bird cages. The party started early and ended around 11:00PM — possibly too early for some guests who were in HUSTLER girl heaven. The guest list was select, but not surprising, and included an array of Hollywood stars, entertainment executives, community leaders, business moguls, upper crust of the LA social scene and numerous darlings right off the pages of HUSTLER magazine. Way to go Larry and Liz! The night was memorable, food delicious, guest list stupendous! WAY FUN! BHT By Stephanie J. Hibler Photos:Scott-Elkins Fine Portraits

Dolly Parton and her country music ride. WHAT she is most proud of and WHO she loves.
A country music superstar with disarming down home
appeal; thatʼs my impression of Dolly Parton after getting the living legendʼs humorous and candid take on her own iconic career. As Dolly reflects on the significance of her 42nd — yes 42nd — studio album titled, Blue Smoke, she has much to say about when, how and why she continues to make music. Dolly also shared personal feelings about with whom she loves to collaborate and how sheʼs given back to those whose humble beginnings reflect her own storied history in the mountains of rural Tennessee. Known for southern charm, lyrically rich songs and a larger-thanlife blonde bombshell appearance, many donʼt know of Dollyʼs longtime behind-the-scenes work with childrenʼs literacy, how she equates rock nʼ roll with gospel and… did you know sheʼs pop star, Miley Cyrusʼ godmother? Fans worldwide see first hand on her Blue Smoke World Tour, that this iconic superstar shows no signs of slowing down as she crisscrosses the globe with show stops in Australia, New Zealand, Europe and North America. Dolly is a living legend who shinning with personality and humor referred to herself in 2008 as “Backwoods Barbie” — a nod to her upbringing on an impoverished farm who fast became a global phenomenon. Rather than giving me just the rundown on her latest album, Blue Smoke, Dolly was refreshingly willing to offer up thoughts on her famous friendships, her quiet, intimate moments of creativity, and the one quality she canʼt live without. AK: Blue Smoke will be your 42nd studio album! That’s mind blowing longevity for such a tough and unforgiving business. You haven’t jumped through hoops to reinvent yourself in the media like some artists do; you’ve remained authentically who you are. To what do you attribute your decades-long success and your loyal fan base? Dolly: I was born a creative person. I got the creativity from my motherʼs side of the family; the biggest part of it. Certainly, my dad was gifted in his own way, but my motherʼs people were very musical from writing and singing to playing instruments. Itʼs just in me to create stuff, to think new thoughts; I just think… just be creative.
12 // bhtmag.com //
AK: You took your mother’s gifts and put a good dose of ambition and business acumen behind them… Dolly: Iʼm always wanting to build something, grow something
and make something more out of what Iʼm doing. But thatʼs a wonderful thought process, and I love writing songs. Then you can take it a step further when you get into a position to help, or you know that you should. I think as long as I live Iʼll be trying to think of new and different things to do. AK: Your new song “Blue Smoke,” describes billowing smoke from a train, and how it careens around the tracks, as a metaphor for moving on from heartbreak. Are you observant and metaphoric by nature? Dolly: I donʼt require a lot of sleep and everybody kind of knows that about me. So I write in the wee hours of the morning, my best times! My favorite time to get up is when everything is quiet and I feel like Iʼve kind of got a direct channel, and I say, “Give me some stuff Lord, just send it on down here.” So I just get it out and start writing. “Wee-hour wisdoms” is what I call it. AK: If you had to choose one sense: sight, sound, touch, taste or smell, which would you grasp onto for dear life, and why? Dolly: Of course, I need all of my senses, but the one I couldnʼt do without is my sense of humor! AK: So much of country music deals with matters of the heart. How do you process heartbreak, both as an artist and as a human being? Dolly: The first thing I do is break it down to figure out why it hurt me. As a writer, I start the process of how to build it back and find out how it can help or heal, not only me, but my friends and the people who listen to whatever song it eventually becomes. Every heartbreak I ever had has become a song. And the successful ones that made a lot of money, made me heal even better. Ainʼt it funny how healing money can be! AK: You’re right about your sense of humor, may you never lose that sense! I love your new duet with Kenny Rogers, “You Can’t Make Old Friends,” which is on your new album. Who wrote those lyrics, and who are the people in your life you thought of while recording it? Photos Courtesy of Dolly Records
Dolly: That song is one of my favorites on the CD and Kenny is one of my favorite people in the whole wide world. We are old friends. In fact, when they were putting the song together I understand Kenny was talking to the people writing it, and was in on writing the song and said, “Youʼve got to write this for Dolly and me, so we can have another good duet. Dolly knows me like a book and I know her like a book, so this is a perfect idea for a song for us.” I think it turned out well. AK: Who comes to mind when you listen to the song? Dolly: All of us that have old friends can relate to the song because you donʼt always have time for new ones anymore, when you are as busy as us. Itʼs nice to make a new friend now and then, but you canʼt make old friends. Of course, Kenny and I have always had that love and passion. Weʼve never been lovers, but weʼve always been loved by each other. And I think we sing well together. I am very proud of this song and this CD. AK: How have your friends impacted the course of your life? Dolly: They have totally transformed my life. I can honestly say, I would not be here today if it werenʼt for my friends. I have had the same best friend for over 60 years. I have worked with the same people for more years than I can count. Once I become friends with you, I remain intensely loyal to you forever. AK: What do you like most collaborating with Kenny? Dolly: I love Kenny. I love his voice. I never ever get tired of hearing Kenny sing. Weʼre kindred spirits and very much alike. Our sense of humor is warped and we communicate so naturally. Itʼs like I know what he is thinking, I know what heʼs feeling, even if he doesnʼt say it. Iʼll bust him on something I know heʼs thinking. I just love his voice and think we are so compatible. AK: Many people have your careers intertwined in their collective memories. You’re this iconic duo! Dolly: People think weʼve worked together for years and had one hit record after another, but we didnʼt. We had, The Islands and a couple of songs, Christmas album and toured a little, but people tag us together like we are married. Thatʼs a wonderful problem to have; a wonderful husband to have in the business. AK: What are you most proud of? Dolly: Iʼm proud of a lot of things. There are great highlights. Iʼm proud of the fact Iʼve had an opportunity, and now that Iʼm older I can say that Iʼve lived to see my dreams come true. Many people have the same dreams I do. A lot of them more talented, write better songs, sing better songs, better performers, and work just as hard and never enjoyed the success Iʼve had. Every day Iʼm grateful that Iʼve been allowed to see my dreams come true. And, Iʼm thankful to my fans. AK: Any career highlights that stand out? Dolly: Things like when I became a member of The Grand Ole Opry back in the late ʻ60s; the Kennedy Awards... things like that. When I started the Imagination Library, my literacy program, and saw that it become such a big success… there are many, many things that Iʼm very proud of and hopefully thereʼll be lots and lots more. But the biggest thing is… Iʼm like Minnie Pearl, “Iʼm just so proud to be here (Laughs)!” (Comedienne Minnie Pearlʼs famous catch-phrase was "How-w-w-DEE-E-E-E! I'm jes' so proud to be here!") AK: You told Dan Rather you liken yourself to a “show horse or a show dog.” Do you feel like you always have to be “on?” Are you in your comfort zone being the public Dolly Parton all the time? Dolly: If Iʼm in public, I am “on,” and youʼll see the Dolly Parton you expect to see. If I am in private with
my family Iʼm more relaxed, but still made up. And if I am alone, then I put on a little makeup and fix my hair just so I donʼt scare myself if I walk past a mirror. (Laughs). But to answer the bigger question... I am always Dolly Parton! AK: How is the Blue Smoke World Tour? Each tour has its own theme and culture. What is the theme of this tour? Dolly: Well itʼs an amazing feeling because I donʼt go [out] there enough, and Iʼve had fans there all the years that Iʼve been in this business. Iʼve been at this for so long... over 50 years, but for over 40 years I have had hit records in other parts of the world: Australia, Europe. So when you go [on tour] theyʼre so glad to see you because you donʼt come that often so they want to show how much they love you and appreciate you. Itʼs an electrifying experience between myself and the audience. Weʼve just had such success the last few times. I thought, while I still got the band together and still young
enough to do it, before I start thinking, “well, Iʼm too old to do this part, Iʼll do something else,” I thought letʼs just go back and do this again because they still want us to come back. AK: Many may not know you are Miley Cyrus’ godmother. Any advice you have given her on how to navigate the twists and turns of the music business? Dolly: Well, sheʼs growing, Iʼm telling you. I love her to death. She is a talented, special, sweet girl and is trying her best to grow up, and Iʼm trying my best to let her. Itʼs not my place to tell her how to live. I understand what sheʼs trying to do. Sheʼs trying to break away from many things. We just donʼt want her to grow up. You still want to go, “Oooohhh, calm down just a little bit.” AK: Why did you release this album in New Zealand and Australia first, before releasing it here in the states? Dolly: The Smoke World Tour started there, so it made more sense to release the album there first. AK: What made you decide to cover Bon Jovi’s song, “Lay Your Hands on Me”? Dolly: First time I heard the song, “Lay Your Hands on Me,” I thought it was a gospel song, or should have been. I thought, “What a wonderful idea for a gospel song.” So I held that in my head for a long time and for those who follow my career as you know Iʼll take rock songs and pop songs and do what they call covers on them. Iʼll maybe do bluegrass or kind of country, and I thought this one would lend itself to a heavy duty rock beat, but with bluegrass instruments and harmonies, in addition to having a gospel kind of choir. I decided to put it together and thought itʼd be wonderful to do on stage. AK: What did Jon Bon Jovi think of you re-imagining of his song? Dolly: I contacted Jon and Richie Sambora, who wrote the song and said “Well guys, I would like to do this as a gospel song. Would you help me out and would you mind if we did that?” And, we put it together. They are proud of it and Iʼm proud of it. Itʼs one of my favorite songs. I close the first half of my concert with it. And I get a chance to work with the audience, with “Lay Your Hands on Me.” Itʼs really inspirational; itʼs very uplifting. AK: What is your favorite way to give back to your home community in the mountains of Tennessee, and throughout the world? Is there a particular charitable cause you would like to talk about? Dolly: Imagination Library, my literacy program I started many years ago. We give children books from the time theyʼre born, once a month, until they start kindergarten so they learn to love to read. It was a program that started in my home county and then it went all over Tennessee, then throughout the United States, Canada, and now weʼre in the UK and going all over Australia. To date, weʼve given out about 60 million books and we are just growing and growing, working with United Way. AK: How do you feel about touring versus doing press when it comes to promoting an album? Dolly: You really canʼt do one without the other. The media drives sales, and the concerts drive people. So as a performer you donʼt look at them separately. You look at them together, like biscuits and gravy. Dolly Partonʼs 42nd studio album, “Blue Smoke,” is out now. RECOGNIZED
as one of the most successful, knowledgeable and no-nonsense fitness experts in the world, Tony Horton’s famous BOOT CAMP P90X home fitness programs will get you in the best shape of your life — if you are committed to get into the best shape of your life! This is not a journey for quitters. Tony’s fitness programs work miracles if you do your part: stay on course. I have to admit I turned into a HUGE non-exercise offender. I used to work out two hours a day — going from hiking to the gym and exercise at home. I never broke the routine because I loved what I was doing, and I loved how daily exercise and taking care of by body made me feel: FABULOUS. Of course, those days were before I began publishing a magazine and working 14-18 hours a day! My life went from doing what I wanted — to sitting at my desk and then climbing into my bed exhausted. Desk to bed. Desk to bed. Sound familiar? It does if you’re like zillions of other workaholic wage earners who need to work to pay their bills, have a family to take care of, and make time for everything BUT themselves. Well, that was my excuse anyway because I saw exercise as one more CHORE I had to do. In reality, exercise and taking care of our bodies is a privilege we can’t omit from our daily lives no matter how busy we are. Would I change my high energy/long hours/non stop job for something low key? HELL NO. I love what I do. I just want to be healthy doing it, and know that I’m taking care of myself in the process and not turning into a slug. Think about this: If we don’t fuel our bodies with healthy food and keep our bodies strong with regular exercise, our bodies cannot withstand the grueling pace of our lives. PERIOD. We are wearing our bodies out and inviting illness in by not taking time to properly and regularly care for ourselves. There is NO OTHER WAY to look at fitness, exercise and a healthy food plan. Our bodies will for certain break down from illness at some point if we don’t commit to health, fitness and wellness. When I got the opportunity to pin down Tony for a few questions — I jumped at the chance. I love his energy. I love his philosophy, I love his commitment.
Celebrity Fitness Guru & P90x Founder
TONY HORTON
By Suzanne Takowsky
Tony Horton doesnʼt just teach exercise; his programs are successful because he teaches “lifestyle” — it isnʼt just for Tuesdays and Saturdays. Itʼs a 7-day-a-week conscious and positive plan of action to do whatʼs best for ourselves. Overall health and fitness — good and bad are cumulative effects of the lifestyle we live out everyday. With all thatʼs going against us: toxic environment, genetic predisposition, age-related illnesses that can ponce on us without warning — doesnʼt it make sense to do what we can to insure our bodies are in fighting mode every day, every month and year after year? Tony was raised in Trumbull, Connecticut, and after attending the University of Rhode Island, decided to move to the wild West (LA/Hollywood) and take up acting; he even performed stand-up comedy. Although his sense of humor remained his path changed direction in the early 1980s, when his true passion became fitness. During his own workouts, he began focusing on strength training and speed developing unchartered techniques to increase the effectiveness of his training which crossed over to his career as a personal trainer. He established his business, ASH Fitness in Santa Monica, and a true health and fitness lifestyle coach was born. From the beginning Tony stood apart from the rest with his creative take on exercise routine — something back then few people knew about or understood. His great success within the fitness industry over the years can be attributed to his passion and belief that exercise is not just about building muscle. According to Tony, true exercise is “functional fitness” that focuses on increasing speed, strength and flexibility. Luckily for all the millions of followers who use his programs, Tonyʼs comedic sense of humor has remained in tact which we see in his home fitness programs and on TV. His ability to lighten the mood even for a minute and put a smile on our faces even for a second makes all those “tough love” exercises somewhat bearable as we feel the true meaning of... no pain no gain! Tony says, “Laughter. One word, a multitude of benefits. Laughter helps to lower stress, boosts your immune system, and is a natural muscle relaxer.” ST: In LA everyone is exercise crazy BUT many don't get the results they want even though they work out. What's the secret to “spot-exercising” parts of our bodies for maximum results? Is it effective? TONY: In my opinion itʼs silly to try to spot reduce parts of the body. I create fitness programs that change a personʼs perspective about how he/she wants to live. An overall exercise program that has tons of variety, along with consistency is the key to getting maximum results from head to toe. I want people to move and train like an athlete, and if they do... they will end up with the best version of their arms, stomach, and thighs that you can imagine. ST: Is it true after a certain age it's almost impossible to turn flab into toned muscle, and if so WHY? TONY: It's true that as we get older, our body does decline in it's ability to build muscle and burn fat. For men, it's due to the reduction of testosterone levels, but that doesn't mean it's impossible. A consistent exercise regime including strength training, and full body workouts help to increase testosterone levels. Also, what you eat is paramount in this process. Consuming lean proteins, healthy fats, vegetables, legumes, grains, nuts and seeds can support the body in burning flab and building muscle. Itʼs a gradual process, but as long as you are carefully intensifying resistance and increasing repetitions, you will certainly see muscle growth. Tony has developed seven fitness programs to help us get in shape. Regardless of where you are in your quest for fitness, you can find something that works for you and challenges you to not only achieve the results you want, but move up the ladder and intensify your exercise program. Youʼve seen them on television and read about them in magazines — the so-so-famous P90, P90X, P90X+, 10 Minute Trainer, P90X2 and P90X3 programs. I know when Iʼm watching TV flipping chanels and come across one of Tonyʼs programs — there is NO way I am not going to watch. In fact, itʼs mandatory I watch. Mostly I canʼt believe what Iʼm seeing and the reactions of people taking his classes. They all want more of what he can do for them. As Tony says, “Health and fitness is a journey and not a destination, it is a lifestyle.”
14 // bhtmag.com //
An avid promoter of a healthy lifestyle for all ages, Tony travels the world visiting military bases to schools. His knowledge encompasses everything from strength training, cardiovascular exercises, to yoga, calisthenics, stretching, rehabilitation, boxing, interval training and many others. In addition to the home fitness programs he developed with Beachbody, Tony is the author of two best-selling books: Tony Hortonʼs Bring It and The Big Picture: 11 Laws That Will Change Your Life.
Break it up throughout the day in 10 minute increments if you need to. Everyone has 10 minutes here and there, and you get the same benefit if the intensity is there. Challenge yourself, work up a little sweat, get your heart rate up so your body receives the benefits.
Tony’s 3 Biggest Workout Mistakes That Even Pros Make
Tonyʼs favorite exercises include: pull-ups, rope climbing, campus board, where he uses his strength to defy the effects of gravity. Over the years, he has developed unique and effective training techniques, the most famous being Muscle Confusion — the basis of P90X. In P90X2, he introduced P.A.P (Post Activation Potentiation) proven to improve athletic performance. Tony says he did not create P.A.P, but learned it over months of research with professional athletes, then combined it with his muscle confusion technique. In P90X3, Muscle Acceleration helped people get greater results in a shorter period of time.
2. Be realistic: Be patient. Believe the program will work. Set realistic goals each month.
ST: What if people don’t have time for a full range of exercises. What do you consider the “3” best exercises we can do for fitness and health? TONY: If I were forced to pick three it would be push ups, core exercises, and running fast. Heart, lungs, legs, mid section, shoulders, chest and arms are all affected by these three simple movements. None of which you need a gym, equipment or trainer. I say to people, “Do your best and forget the rest”— it encourages those with self-doubt to replace doubt with action. The major reason most exercise plans and diets fail is due to a lack of patience and dedication. As long as you show up, you will see results. Also try new moves/combinations. Variety produces results. You may be comfortable with the same exercises but that doesnʼt mean youʼll get the results you want.
#1. Confusing Soreness With Injury: Soreness mostly happens in the middle/center of muscles where there is more “meat”; injury usually occurs in joints (the area connecting muscles). Common injuries are to hips, elbows, knees, and ankles. Feeling vulnerable in your tendons is a sign of injury or preinjury. Take off a few days to determine if itʼs injury or soreness. Soreness disappears within 1-2 days with high protein; injury can last longer. Reduce the weights you lift to prevent further exacerbation of soreness/injury and increase your range of motion so tension is spread over a larger area reducing strain on one particular muscle. Donʼt push injuries or they can last weeks longer. Acknowledging goals you have accomplished helps you stick with the program until your body gets used to it.
#3: Neglecting Nutrition
Itʼs easy to assume if you train hard you can eat whatever you want. But avoiding a nutrition guide means at the end of the 90-day fitness program you wonʼt get the results you expect. Cupcakes, donuts, soft drinks fried food, etc. are a treat once in a while (1-2 times a week) on a regular basis they destroy the results you have worked to get. Healthy eating is vital. If your food falls under any of these categories youʼre fine: Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, healthy fats. Eat clean 80-90% of the time. ST: Most of us are aware that a regular exercise routine brings the best results, but what about those who have difficulty making time to exercise every day. TONY: The bottom line is you have to make time for exercise. Start with 20 minutes a day.

From exotic prints to bold colors on the eyes to the Kardashians and Hunger Games, I break down my top five must-have’s for Fall as well as my favorite celebrities you should start looking to for some of the best fashion advice on and off the carpet.
5 Must-Have Trends For Fall Wardrobe
Handbag
Shoes
Now you can feel like youʼre being exotic in a tropical destination all year. From colored crocodile to patterned snakeskin, the exotic trend for handbags is in full force this season. Photo Credit: Uber Shoes
Seems the 90ʼs schoolgirl plaid trend Britney Spears made popular in “…Baby One More Time” will never fade away because everyone is just absolutely mad for plaid this Fall. Photo Credit Victoria Beckham
When thinking of shoes for Fall, I envision something polished and refined, sophisticated and classy, yet with a trendy twist. With menswear style type shoes making it big, it checks off every one of those visions and more. Photo Credit: Armani
Celebrity Trendsetters Beyonce
Jewelry It seems like the ring trend just keeps getting bigger and bigger (literally). Transitioning from embellished double and fingers rings to connecting ring bracelets, this Fall itʼs all about the hand cuff. Photo Credit: Forward By Elyse Walker
Kendall Jenner They don’t call her “the Queen” for nothing. Beyonce is and has not only been dominating the music world for over a decade, but it seems as if her fashion has been climbing right alongside her to the top. Tasteful, classic, and elegant, Beyonce’s style gets better as time goes on. (And for those who caught a glimpse of her “On The Run” tour, you’ll agree that her wardrobe was phenomenal!).
The second to youngest of the Kardashian clan, little Miss Kendall Jenner has been slowly, but definitely surely, climbing the fashion trendsetting totem pole. Making the covers of magazines like Teen Vogue and walking in shows like Marc Jacobs and Chanel, Kendall is becoming a fashionista to be reckoned with.
Makeup When you think Fall, you think itʼs time to hide “colors” away in your closet until Spring rolls around again. On the contrary, as this season is all about embracing colors on your eyes with bold shades of eyeliner and eye shadow. Photo Credit: Kenzo
Jennifer Lawrence Within the past few years, I think it’s safe to say that Jennifer Lawrence has become the “IT” golden girl of Hollywood and everyone’s favorite person to watch on the red carpet. With the highly anticipated The Hunger GamesMockingjay Part 1 hitting movie theaters this November, everyone (including myself) will be waiting to see what fashion trends she will be hitting us with next.

Former U.S. Marine Anthony L. Ungaro
Rides Across the United States for Pets Living In Shelters ONE
cool dude, one hot Harley, and a cross-country adventure to help raise awareness for all shelter animals. Anthony Ungaro fulfilled the American Dream of almost any guy on planet earth when he decided to take time to cruise the highways on his Harley and ride across America. But, he didnʼt do it just for time away from the rat race — although a little peace and quiet after serving his country as a Marine may not have been a bad idea. Anthony took the ride to generate press for all the voiceless dogs and cats who live in animal shelters. Our FUREVER friends, be it four, three or two pawed, need our help. Every year 6-8 million cats and dogs enter U.S. animal shelters. Each day 10,000 dogs and cats are euthanized in these same shelters, and that number is growing. People like Anthony and the organization he is riding for, Rock & Rawhide helps make a difference in the lives of these beautiful animals. Starting on the east coast, Anthony made stops in animal shelters, pet hospitals and PETCOʼs across America on his historic ride to see animals, speak to crowds of people on hand to greet him, and visit teams of caring professionals and volunteers who make Rock & Rawhide one of the most respected animal organizations in the country. Stops along Anthonyʼs scenic U.S. route included: New York (Petco Union Square Animal Care & Control of NYC NOLA Furry Friends); Michigan (Petco Sterling Heights Michigan Humane Society); South Dakota (Petco Rapid City Humane Society of the Black Hills); Utah (Petco Fort Union West Valley City Humane Society, Salt Lake County Animal Services and Humane Society of Utah, Petco Fort Union Midvale); California (Petco La Brea, Los Angeles Animal Services Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA) and many more. Rock & Rawhide is dedicated to increasing adoption levels of dogs and cats living in U.S. shelters. It launched a national campaign to drive adoptions and support local animal shelters across the U.S. and ... “Anthonyʼs Ride for Shelter Pets” was born. Harkening back to the days of Route 66

and how Americans used to drive awareness of important issues from town to town —“Anthonyʼs Ride for Shelter Pets” took Rock & Rawhide volunteer, and Marine Corps Veteran Ungaro from the skyscrapers of New York to the glitz and glam of LA and Hollywood riding his 2007 Harley-Davidson FXDB Dyna Bob. Anthony, a 29-year-old Brooklyn native made the decision to combine his love for motorcycle riding with a desire to help shelter animals. Anthony served eight years in the U.S. Marine Corps, which included a deployment to Iraq during the 2004 Battle of Fallujah, before returning home and finding love with his red-nosed pit bull Donny. Anthony said, “I attribute my successful transition from the military to college, to the positive experiences and responsibilities that come with having a pet in the family.” Anthonyʼs motorcycle trip spanned more than 4,000 miles, covering 14 states. He departed NYC on July 28, and made it to his final destination Los Angeles on August 12th at Petco La Brea to a cheering crowd where he delivered toys, treats and supplies on behalf of Rock & Rawhide. He met with the local press to discuss the importance of supporting shelters.
Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA is an independent, donor-supported, non-profit agency providing animal care for abandoned and homeless animals. Its open door policy welcomes and cares for all animals in its service area regardless of age, medical condition, breed or other criteria. The Society is responsible for animal control and welfare for nine area cities: Arcadia, Bradbury, Glendale, La Cañada Flintridge, Monrovia, San Marino, Pasadena, Sierra Madre and South Pasadena. Lead sponsors for the ride included: the Petco Foundation, Elvis Duran and the Morning Show and Shoei Premium Helmets. Supporting sponsors were Natural Balance Pet Foods, KONG Company, 2 Dogs Treats, Benebone, Lauren + Vanessa and others. In addition to getting shelter dogs adopted to loving homes during his trip, Rock & Rawhide generously delivered to shelters on the ride approximately 5,893 items with a dollar value of $48,114.50. Upon his return to his home state, Anthony was presented with the Pet Hero Award at a ceremony in the Hamptons from the Pet Philanthropy Circle. Rock & Rawhide aims to increase adoptions and quality of life for dogs and cats in shelters, by providing distraction therapy and noise/stress reduction through generous donations of toys, tough chew items, Kongs, bones, blankets, Nyctanthes, rawhides and more. If a dog is chewing, it's not barking! If a cat is playing, itʼs not meowing! Less noise means no stress. In turn dogs and cats pass evaluations at shelters, and show more of their personality which can go a long way to making them adoptable. Rock & Rawhide collects items from regular donations, music gigs, visual art shows, culinary events, DJ events, and drop box programs plus more. Senior dogs are the best. They know you well, you know them well; they are smart, seasoned and worth their weight in gold. They need special care to stay healthy and happy for as long as possible. Orthopedic issues such as arthritis and hip dysplasia are common especially in medium to large breeds. Decreased eye sight and a marble glow in their eyes are common as dogs age. Senior dogs are prone to cancers, so if you notice lumps or other symptoms get them checked promptly. Many cancers are curable if caught early, some treatments offer a normal lifespan while others relieve pain and quiet symptoms. The best medicine is to know early on the best treatment options. Heart, kidney, dental disease and hypothyroidism are concerning conditions in older dogs that can interfere with their ongoing health.
Senior Cats Change With Age
Physical and mental changes occur just as they do with people. Older cats sleep more and sleep more deeply. They may not jump as high, but donʼt assume that slowing down is age-related. There are treatable medical conditions behind not wanting to play or be petted. If you see a sudden slow down, check with your veterinarian; a gradual change can be caused by a medical issue. Hyperthyroidism, kidney failure, arthritis, dental disease, hypertension and intestinal cancer are the most common diseases of older cats.
When It’s Time To See A Veterinarian
A majority of senior pet diseases and problems are preventable if diagnosed in time before a pet exhibits long-term symptoms. If your pet has eating, drinking, bathroom and grooming habits that have changed; is acting arthritic and slow, or you notice an unusual lump or odor, schedule a vet visit. If your cat has lost weight despite a good appetite, she/he could have hyperthyroidism, kidney failure or an intestinal disease. A simple blood work up and x-rays can diagnose and prevent many diseases. Blood work and regular checkups are essential when your pet turns 7-years old; large breed dogs at 5-years old.
What’s New In Veterinary Care?
Todayʼs technology provides senior pets with a painless and comfortable transition. Anti-inflammatory medications, joint diets (veterinary formulated/researched), acupuncture, and laser therapy are therapeutic methods to resolve arthritis pain. Many old-age diseases can be controlled with special diets prescribed by veterinarians. BHT

Something To Think About 8 Simple Stressbusters Henry S. Miller Author of The Serious Pursuit of Happiness: Everything You Need to Know to Flourish and Thrive.

canʼt really avoid. The good news? You have more power than you realize to control stress before it prevents you from living the life you want to lead. Here are 8 simple stressbusters to help you.

Every day, do at least one simple thing youʼve been putting off: return a phone call, make a doctorʼs appointment, file paperwork on your desk. Taking care of one nagging responsibility will energize you and improve your attitude! Completing one task might inspire you to the next. At the end of each day, plan your schedule for tomorrow using a day planner that works for you.

HOW TO LIVE FEARLESS SEVEN DAYS A WEEK MOST people live life under a cloud of fear. My life was like that from a very early age until the pain of covering my fear hurt too much to continue life this way. The time came for me to face my fear and come to terms with it. I don't claim to have a secret weapon to remove fear from life; I donʼt know if such a thing -exists, but through self-discovery, we can become aware of the things we do on a continual basis to hide our fear. Digging Deep doesn't promote a religion or understanding of God. It does, however, help to remove the barriers we put between ourselves and God; barriers that come to define who we are as human beings. By choosing not to label ourselves we find a freedom in that we donʼt have to defend ourselves. As actor Jim Carrey says, "We are the container, you cannot contain the container." We escape "the box" of thought that attempts to take credit for what we already are. Finding peace in surrender is an answer the ego doesn't accept willingly. "Digging Deep" is an easy read with steps to follow that broaden your perception and help you see what you try to avoid. Finding the courage to face what we fear puts us on a path to ultimate personal freedom and growth. Tom Greene grew up with a recovering alcoholic father and codependent mother. His childhood although indulged was lived in fear of his father who died when he was 12-years old. In a struggle of self-discovery and escape he reached his lowest point as an adult losing everything he held close from cocaine and alcohol addiction. “Digging Deep” is his journey to overcome childhood trauma and the coping mechanisms of fear and denial that lead to addiction. "Digging Deep, How To Live Fearless Seven Days A Week" is now available online through LuLu publishing. BHT

The Road To Shine HOW TO BE HAPPY EVEN WHEN LIFE IS CRAPPY By Laurie Gardner Happiness is a big buzzword these days, but what exactly does it mean? For me, happiness isn’t the temporary high we get from drinking a few glasses of wine, or even the pride we may feel for a couple weeks after earning a prestigious award. True happiness is more lasting.
WHILE happiness sometimes shows up as wahoo! elation, happiness can also be a deeply grounded sense of peace.
Here is my “elevator pitch” definition: Happiness is an inside job. To be fully happy, make sure that what you do, whom you’re with, and where you live match who you really are. As I thought about my life and experiences of my coaching clients, it struck me that happiness seems especially elusive for highly-successful people. For starters, we tend to be perfectionists who set impossible standards. So, therefore, we are rarely happy with our own or othersʼ performances — be it work colleagues or loved ones. Many of us were also “trained” quite well to criticize and look for flaws, which can make it difficult to see the positive in life. Also, most successful people are high-achievers. Certainly not a bad trait in and of itself, but when we remain “externally” focused for too long — especially after we have achieved our goals, a let down or inner emptiness can follow making us aware of the fact that we still arenʼt happy. On the other hand, if we donʼt achieve our goals, we may feel like “failures” rather than recognizing the valuable lessons we learned along the way. By always reaching for “the next thing” our attention is always focused on the future, rather than on the here and now. Lastly, movers and shakers like to be in control. Major life changes such as loss of employment, change in relationship status, and relocation are especially stressful and difficult for us to handle and adjust to.
Suggestions: How To Be Happy Even When Life Is Crappy As a freedom-loving Sagittarius, I had explored most of the world before I turned 30. One of the things I found fascinating was that virtually every country has an expression that means, “Life is short; don’t waste it.” Yet while most of us agree that life is a precious gift, too many of us settle for less: We work in jobs we hate; stay in unfulfilling relationships; settle for less than ideal health; and live where we donʼt feel at home. WHY DO WE DO THESE THINGS? This was a burning question to myself when I ran off to the New Mexico desert alone and fasted on a vision quest for a week. (No... I didnʼt ingest drugs – just water.) As I sat overlooking a spectacular painted canyon in 108-degree heat, a book came pouring out into my leather journal titled —
The Road to Shine. Regarding macro-level happiness: what we want to do and be in this life — here are some realizations that came to me from downtime alone in the desert:
• •
Settle schmettle. Life is too short not to live fully. Shine in sequence. To live your passion and purpose,
first clean up the deeper stuff that is holding you back.
•
Peel the onion, baby. Underneath your excuses are your fears. Underneath your fears are what is really preventing you from getting what you want.
• Change is a double-hop. Letting go of what isnʼt working is only the first step. Sticking it out until you get where you want to go is where true courage lies.
• Transform on your own time. Baby steps are as good as a big leap. Just keep moving forward.
• Quit if it doesnʼt fit. You know youʼve found your purpose when you CANʼT not do it. •
Practice “practical passion.” Balance your dreams with your current reality. Even if you canʼt be a rock star, you can still sing your heart out in the shower.
My discoveries about micro-level happiness. How to be happier in the moment:
•
Celebrate your inner freak. Do or say one “out there” thing daily that you are sure everyone will judge.
• •
You are what you Tweet. Be aware of your words.
Choose among the chatter. Of all the voices in your head, follow the calm and non-judgmental one; itʼs inner wisdom.
•
After me, I insist. Your needs are as important as everyone elseʼs. No excuses, no resentment, no apologies, no guilt.
• Drop the wet noodle. Be as gentle and compassionate with yourself as you would be toward someone you love.
• Follow your intuition. If something smells fishy, it likely is. • Reboot your world view. Deliberately rewire your brain by choosing to interpret things in a more positive way.
• Fight to be free. Fill your heart and empty your mind. • Lose the schtick. Recognize when you act in an authentic
“in the moment way” versus how others expect you to be.
• Check their baggage at the door. You are fully lovable
even when others canʼt fully love you.
• You already know. The question is why youʼre not doing it. • Correction, not rejection. When things donʼt work out... • Why NOT you? You deserve to have it all. itʼs just not where you belong. Youʼll know when itʼs juiced. • After five days, my head and body were lighter from When deciding whether to stay in something, wait until you feel bored, detached, and only half in it. At that point, youʼre done.
lack of food, I was hallucinating about eating a cheesecake when I got home. As I packed up to go, I jotted down my most powerful realization of all:
Let it all out. In a society that values specialization, be proud if you have multiple passions and skills. Michelangelo and DaVinci were the rock stars of their day.
Live fun. Live full. Live free www.lauriegardner.com The Road to Shine is available on Amazon and in book stores nationwide.
•
•
Bottoms up. When you hit rock bottom and canʼt take it any more, your spirit is ready for you to do what you came here to do.
•
Just answer the call. Your vision has been on voicemail for way too long.
•
Itʼs time. The world is waiting for your gift. BHT

Dr Glams Makeup Tips For Women Over 50 • Skin Comes First... Always! Make sure skin is in prime condition. The better your skin, the less makeup required. Keep skin hydrated and exfoliated and possibly under-eye concealer, mascara and lip balm could be your very easy day-to-day routine.
• Plump Skin Temporarily via Moisturizer or Primer. No lotion-potion makes fine lines/wrinkles disappear, slathering on moisturizer before foundation/concealer temporarily plumps skin making them less visible. Pre-moisturizing helps makeup glide on. Use creams instead of powder as you age; moisture hides skin flaws.
• Choose the Right Foundation. Women use the same foundation for years, yet skin changes seasonally. Winter requires a creamy formula. Warm weather needs a tinted moisturizer. The most popular foundations are formulated with mature skin in mind.
• Stay Away From Dark Lipstick. Unless you have dark skin and plump lips, stay away from dark lipstick... it’s aging! Rosy reds and pinks are best. Not sure which color works for you? Visit a department store makeup counter/consult a professional makeup artist to see which shades flatter your skin tone. • Use Eye Pencils Instead of Liquid Liners. Eye pencils are softer than liquid liners (harsh on aging eyes). Soften the line more by smudging it with a finger tip or angled makeup brush dipped in dark shadow doubles as smudgy eyeliner. Lining the inside of eyes can make them look smaller. The way to open up eyes is to curl lashes. Warm the lash curler with a blow dryer for 3 seconds; test metal on your arm so you don't burn your lid; curl ashes and apply a couple sweeps of mascara. If lashes aren’t as lush as you want, get lash extensions. False lashes also work, but apply individual lashes rather than an entire length of false lashes. • Less Is More Over 50. Highlighter pens, tinted moisturizers, and a light touch with shadow and lipstick work beautifully. • Add a Pop of Blush to Cheeks. Women can use blush incorrectly or not at all. A pop of blush on the apples of cheeks brightens a dull complexion. BLEND WELL whatever goes on your face to avoid lines. Blush is a pop of color; Lip liner shouldnʼt bleed into skin; Brows shouldnʼt look painted on.
• Under-Eye Circles Begone! A problem for women all ages are dark under eye circles. Counter with a rich under-eye cream at night and a lighter one for day. Use a corrector in pink/peach tones to conceal dark spots; apply a yellow-based concealer/foundation.

Dr Glams Hairstyles For Women Over Age 50 Shoulder-length hair is flattering any age. Jessica Lange colors her graying hair gorgeous blonde, and wears it shoulder-length in her signature cut. Volume and body is achieved through long layers and the correct product for her fine hair. Use volumizing mousse or spray; blow hair with a diffuser or scrunch it dry for full body. Katie Couric’s bob is classic. She accents it with edgy flips for a youthful bounce; long side bangs are flipped back for elegance. Katie also dazzles in short hair, adds volume to the base of hair and big flips towards the ends achieve a young style. Her hair is teased away from her face for a bright appearance. Julianne Moore is stunning with a simple straight and sophisticated style. Short/medium/long lengths and always vibrant auburn hair color takes years off her age. No fancy equipment or styling: wash hair, dry, and straighten. A middle part can offer an edgy attitude! My favorite hairstyles are timeless looks a woman any age can wear with strategic tweaks. Generally, the more years on a birthday cake the less likely very long hair is your best look. Cutting off outdated hair is not painful, if a shorter style makes you look trendy and younger. Choosing your best hair color isnʼt as daunting as you think. The success to hair color/style: color looks natural to that person; hair is in premier condition; style compliments facial features. Three shades of blonde work for anyone: sand, rosewood and wheat. Avoid too light blonde shades or black; they age you dramatically. Brown is terrific if it includes varied brown shades and blonde tweaks. No hairdresser can make hair look nice if itʼs in bad condition. Hair quality is essential for beauty.

The Truth About the Brazilian Blowout Why this keratin-based hair-smoothing treatment is getting negative press. Pioneered in Brazil as a hair-straightening treatment that doesn’t burn skin or scalp and gives a beautiful shine. Nothing is perfect as it seems. This and other blowout/hair smoothing treatments contain formaldehyde and chemicals that can cause acute and long-term health effects. Formaldehyde (chemical ) is used as a preservative, embalming agent, disinfectant and modifies hair proteins (Keratins). According to Jarrod Harms, an industry expert/owner of Detour Salon in San Diego, California, it’s harmful at room temperature, “But when heated, intensity increases and can harm you and your stylist.” Side effects include nosebleeds, burning eyes/throat, skin irritations, asthma attacks, sopharyngeal cancer and leukemia. Is there an alternative? Organic Keratin Treatment Certified by Natura Keratin Certified Organic Ingredients/Go Green by Robert Moran Doctor of Glam is free of harsh chemicals. Clothes, Shoes, Bags, Hair, Makeup, Cars, and Doing Lunch... the day-to-day of being rich. OH MY!
JUST when we thought life in Beverly Hills Reality TV couldnʼt get more decadent,
profusely centered in want-not, bathed in self-love and bouncing in an abundance of youth, beauty and hot bodies, along came what else... #Rich Kids of Beverly Hills to set the record straight (as if it wasnʼt already cemented in our brains in 24-karat gold leaf) to let the world know nothing is more fun or fab for the younger generation than a life in Beverly Hills — and being rich — of course. We knew it was bound to happen sooner or later. With all the adult action running wild on Beverly Hills Reality TV making headlines and creating havoc, it was just a matter of time before our younginʼs jumped the train to let planet earth in on whatʼs itʼs like to grow up pampered. And sure enough to everyoneʼs amazement when the weekly series hit our TV screens, this 90210 crowd of up and coming movers and shakers hit the ground running and the pace hasnʼt slowed. Sunday nights on the E! channel, itʼs a look at a generation who have learned to rock the world via social networking and from all viewpoints it seems to be working. One cast member stepping out in front is 25-year old Morgan Stewart who thrills her fans with tons of blogs about her life. Get up close and personal with Morgan and visit at BoobsAndLoubs.com. When asked shortly after the show started about life as a rich kid in Beverly Hills, Morgan replied, "I love it. I think it's very accurate. They didn't just make this title up out of the blue. Weʼre obviously a product of our own environment." Make no mistake the title might be the Rich Kids of Beverly Hills, but this group has taken a very adult stance on intense marketing, merging their entrepreneurial spirit to do a lot more with their lives than be mannequins for clothes.
BHT: Why do you think #Rich Kids of Beverly Hills became a hit so fast? MORGAN: I think the show is a success because there is such a natural chemistry among all of us. We have all been friends for many years and we are exactly who we are on and off the camera. People can connect to that.
BHT: Any inside scoop that just might take viewers breath away? MORGAN: This season the show dives deeper into our back stories and fans get to see our lives beyond our circle of friends. I think it will help people who watch the show relate to us and see that we are more than just “#RichKids.
BHT: In addition to reality TV, you are an entrepreneur, having founded your own fashion and lifestyle blog for women. What's the demographic of those who follow you, and what have you learned so far from your blog?
MORGAN: I have people anywhere from 16-60 years old writing in; itʼs pretty widespread. The younger readers relate because we are similar in age, but I also consider myself somewhat of an old soul which helps me cater to readers of all ages.
BHT: Any real life diva action behind the scenes on the show? Who is very naughty and who is very nice? MORGAN: I must say, we are all very nice ;). BHT

“I love my profession. It took many years of training to get where I am, and I’m thankful for each step I took because plastic surgery is exactly where I want to be. I am dedicated to helping my patients get what they want — a more youthful and more beautiful appearance. But my job doesn’t stop there. As important as an excellent result is the experience a patient has from the moment they step into my office, throughout their treatments and procedures and follow-up visits. Surgery of any kind is a vulnerable time for a person. I feel deeply that the experiences we have in whatever we do stay with us a lifetime. I strive to make certain the experiences a patient has while in my care are positive. It’s how I want to be treated.”
Beverly Hills Plastic Surgeon
Dr. Dennis Dass Life is challenging, surprising and ultimately everything you envisioned when you follow your dreams and live your passion. LOOKING
back to our youth, most of us remember a moment in time that sparked us into making a decision which path we wanted to take in life. Mine was in high school when I got involved in the school debate team, and discovered by accident I could write debate formulas to counter opposing teams objections. I loved it, and it followed me into college where along with journalism, I joined the debate team and experienced an indescribable joy whenever I sat down to write. I had found my passion. In my 20s, however I got married, had kids and my writing hit the skids as being a full time mom kicked into high gear. And, it wasnʼt again until my early 40s I had the opportunity to rekindle it. One day while reading the Beverly Hills Courier I saw a tiny notice the paper was looking for a reporter. Insecurity kicked in as I thought nobody would hire me without a resume — which I didnʼt have. I debated with myself over the pros and cons of asking for the job and risk being told “NO” but decided to fight my fear and do it. At the time the owner, March Schwartz — a true newspaper man in every sense of the word interviewed me and said “YES”. Every turn was a challenge I had to face and learn from. But I was back in my writing groove and nothing was going to stop me and I decided to start a magazine. Who knew? Not even me that one day I would be in Beverly Hills, California doing something I loved. Itʼs the dedication, perseverance and motivation in whatever we do in life that seems to be the winning formula as we strive to find and live our dreams. I believe that once we find our true passion our lives will never be fulfilled unless we follow it — no matter how long it takes or how difficult it is. Iʼve met and interview many successful people over the years, and with each one there are two incredibly common links that stand out. First, they are passionate for what they do, and once they get to where they want to go they donʼt stop in their quest to get better and better. They continue on a path to learn more and improve greatly. Second, they decline to take “NO” for an answer. They never take “NO” for an answer. What we see in those who have made it to an enviable position is a lot of glitz and glam in a job they make look easy. Believe me nothing
they do is easy. They work long, and hard and are relentless in their pursuit of achievement. Speaking with Beverly Hills based, Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Dennis Dass was one of those interviews for me when the extent of his passion for his profession surfaced with every word he said. Unassuming and polite, quiet but confident, heʼs about as “UN-Beverly-Hills” as a prestigious doctor in his coveted position can get. Dennis is like a breath of fresh air; great personality, and doesnʼt take the press he gets seriously. Even in the midst of fast gaining recognition as the “Brazilian Butt Lift” doctor to go to for a luscious round derriere, he is modest when speaking about his success. Wait. Did somebody say... Butt Lift? Who doesnʼt want and need that? I took a gallup poll among my staff (99% women) and the vote came back “YES” to a sexier butt. No wonder Dennisʼ practice is booming and he works sixsometimes seven days a week (Iʼm not kidding!) which doesnʼt seem to bother him in the least. After all he is young, smitten with his work and comes with more medical training and accreditation than he will need in three lifetimes. According to Dennis he has always been an overachiever who took his education and intended profession extremely seriously. Nothing has changed much except he is in private practice in one of the most competitive plastic and cosmetic surgery driven cities on planet earth. But a grueling schedule doesnʼt faze him. This is a guy who after graduating from plastic surgery residency in Kansas moved to southern California to decide where he wanted to practice. And not one to let moss grow under his feet, he got a job in a hospital taking emergency room calls almost every night of the week, performing reconstructive surgery on trauma cases. His dedication hasnʼt changed, but the local of his doctoring has. These days Dennis con
fines his private practice to elective cosmetic surgery at his beautiful Beverly Hills office overlooking Wilshire Boulevard and the best Beverly Hills has to offer. ST: Your medical studies were geared to a profession in pharmacy. Why the change to plastic surgery? DENNIS: During medical school, I always believed I would go into anesthesiology, which is the next logical step for a pharmacist. However, once I got there I discovered I did not feel challenged. I thought about it a long time before coming to the decision that if I was on the other side of the curtain, I could really make a difference. Plastic surgery is my life, and I love everything about it. The profession of plastic surgery is interesting, challenging and an evolving progress in motion. There is always something new to learn and procedures and treatments to be discovered that lead to the ultimate goal of any plastic surgeon which is to offer patients the very latest avenues to look more youthful and bring improvement to areas they want changed. But plastic surgery is not just about anti-aging there is also the reconstructive side that people tend to forget when they speak about the plastic surgery profession. Being in a position to help people with physical challenges is very rewarding. continued page 28
// bhtmag.com // 27
What attracted me to plastic surgery was being able to change something; fix something; make it less a defining part of how a person is seen or sees him/herself. Itʼs challenging, but very rewarding. I get instant gratification in most cases seeing an improvement right away while the patient is still on the operating room table. During post-operative visits I see how patients improve day to day. They tell me how happy they are and that I have made a positive change in their lives. I feel rewarded that Iʼm able to do what I love, and help others feel better about themselves. Nobody would believe the women who come back a few months after their surgeries with stories of how good they feel and how they have gained a new self-confidence about themselves. For any plastic surgeon this is what we hope for: that we can make a positive impact on the lives of our patients and make them happy. As we look around we see both outstanding plastic surgery results as well those that remind us how crucial it is to chose a plastic surgeon carefully. With a majority of people watching their bank balances, we canʼt forget itʼs better to do nothing than bargain shop any kind of anti-aging, body/face rejuvenation and improvement. Yes, the cost factor is a consideration, but itʼs not good to compare what we need or want with what someone else has had or paid. In plastic surgery, individuality is the name of the game. We donʼt want to lose that special part of our look that makes us unique. Plastic surgery should be about improvement not distortion because we rangled a sizeable discounted fee. ST: The current trend seems to be filler in the face until it looks ready to explode. What happened to having a fabulous facelift? DENNIS: A lot centers around downtime. People want surgical makeovers, but canʼt bother with recovery time. Thatʼs why it seems fillers are taking the place of facial surgery, but they arenʼt. The good news is that newer facelift techniques offfer quick recovery, and results are very natural looking. But those wanting to update their look have to be realistic. No facelift surgery or amount of fillers will make a person look 30 years younger. But if surgery can make a person look 10 years younger, or make a person look great for his/her age, then itʼs a great success. There are plenty of people who look wonderful for their age because they had the correct procedure(s), yet we don't spend much time thinking about them because they look normal. This is the outcome plastic surgeons should strive for, and outcome patients should be thrilled to get — a younger, more refreshed appearance without the signs of too much gone wrong. ST: Any advise for us to follow when looking for a good, qualified plastic surgeon? DENNIS: Although price is an important factor, it should not be the most important deciding factor when choosing a plastic surgeon. Your goal is to have good results.
Attempting to save money could result in a suboptimal result and buyerʼs remorse. Revisionary surgery often costs more than the initial surgery because of the complexity and time involved. Select a surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery so youʼre assured he or she is well-trained and qualified to perform your particular surgery. Plastic surgeons have privileges in hospitals and accredited surgery centers. Be wary of physicians who perform surgery in small private operating rooms and especially under local anesthesia promising to “save you money.” Nonplastic surgeons do not have plastic surgery privileges and they canʼt perform these procedures under general anesthesia in an accredited facility. Once you have found a qualified surgeon, the next step is make certain you are comfortable with him/her. Your relationship with your surgeon should be a trusting and honest one where you can ask as well as expect answers to your questions. Keep in mind the cost of a similar procedure may be different for different patients because not every patient is the same, and procedures must be customized for each person to obtain the best possible outcome. For example, the cost of a breast augmentation can vary depending on the type of implant selected and whether a breast lift will need to be performed at the same time. Many times there is some cost savings (on anesthesia) if multiple procedures are performed during the same surgery. A consultation is always necessary to determine the best surgical treatment plan to obtain desired results and provide an accurate cost estimate. One of the biggest advances in plastic surgery is our understanding of how complications arise, and we have therefore developed specific techniques to reduce any complications and make surgery much safer. for everyone. Always ask a potential doctor to see before and after photos of patients they have treated as that will tell you how a surgeon performs a particular procedure you are interested in. Not every surgeon does every procedure to perfection. It is better to know before hand if the procedure you are interetsed in having is his/her specialty. Dr. Dass is a Diplomat at the American Board of Plastic Surgery, and a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgery, the California Medical Association, and the Los Angeles County Medical Society. As a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon he offers a wide range of cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery services and more specifically, the procedure that has put him on the map — the Brazilian Butt Lift. ST: What are the “HOT” face and body procedures? Give us the scoop on the latest and greatest. DENNIS: Breast augmentation is always a popular procedure. I mostly use the highly cohesive silicone implants known as the “gummy bear” breast implants.
“The media tends to sensationalize the interesting and abnormal, because it draws viewers. People are busy and want a quick fix — something non-surgical, so they look better and can get back to their lives without downtime hence, the popularity of fillers. Fillers are great for revolumizing areas of age-related deficiency, but they will never replace surgery. Those who go too far with fillers create something quite unnatural.” 28 // bhtmag.com //
“Plastic surgery is not a one-look-fits-all industry. Each patient is different and requires a different strategy to accomplish the desired results. This is where I believe the distorted looks we see are coming from. Surgeons using the same technique on everyone — the same filler in the same areas on everyone’s faces. It doesn’t work. On some it looks fine, on others it distorts their faces. Plastic surgery is a customized plan specific to each person’s face and body. There is no other way to see it.” They are the best implants on the market. They look great, feel great, don't leak, and have the best warranty. The Brazilian Butt Lift surgery is extremely popular, in fact some women are opting to hold off on breast augmentation in favor of buttock augmentation. This surgery involves liposuction of the midsection to contour the waist and fat transfer to the gluteal region to sculpt and augment the buttock. The result is a dramatic improvement in the waist-to-hip ratio, ie. a beautiful hourglass figure. With regards to facelifts, the pendulum has finally swung back to doing traditional facelifts. The quick fixes and mini-lifts may work in select patients, but often creates mini results and bad scaring. Traditional facelift techniques with well placed incisions and natural vectors create the best results. Fat grafting is essential to conservatively revolumize the face. I love doing eyelids because it is a small procedure that makes patients look more rested and younger. Regardless of the surgery or procedure — big or small, my goal is to create surgical results that appear natural and beautiful. One of the most rewarding aspects of performing cosmetic surgery on the body according to Dennis is that it allows him to sculpt a more desirable figure for his patients and surgery on the face offers the opportunity to restore a more YOUTHFUL — not a CHANGED beyond recognition appearance. And isnʼt that what we want? Regardless of where I go, at least two or three women stop and ask me about plastic surgery and what I think, and who is good. Everybody seems to think I am an expert because of the anti-aging/plastic surgery articles in my magazine. I see women are torn whether or not to have plastic surgery because of the bad results we are seeing. Yes, I believe in aging gracefully, but what exactly does GRACEFULLY mean? Nobody can deny that when we look better, we feel more youthful. That in itself is a big boost to self-confidence. If a person keeps a realistic expectation of what results they can get and doesnʼt try to look 20 when they are 60 — plastic surgery is an excellent anti-aging avenue. I have to say that choosing your plastic surgeon wisely makes all the difference in your outcome. ST: Deciding to start your practice in Beverly Hills — the capital of plastic surgery. What did you expect? DENNIS: Growing up, I always wanted to live in Beverly Hills, but I never thought it would happen because it was daunting to think about starting a practice in an area with so many plastic surgeons. My mentors recognized my natural ability for surgery and my drive to work hard, and advised me to practice where I want to live. They assured me that if I continue to do excellent work, people will take notice, and I would be successful. They were right, and starting a practice in Beverly Hills was absolutely the
right decision for me. I regularly see patients who travel from other countries to have a consultation with me. Itʼs an amazing feeling. Following my passion has brought me many rewards beyond what I ever envisioned. ST: Which procedures are your favorites to do? DENNIS: I love everything about plastic surgery, but I focus on facial rejuvenation, breast augmentation, and body contouring. I enjoy performing face and neck lifts because it makes both men and women look more youthful and energized. I enjoy performing tummy tucks to restore a flat pre-pregnancy tummy that so many women complain they lose after having a baby. Another of my favorite surgeries is breast augmentation, and certainly the Brazilian Butt Lifts (buttock reshaping) because I can sculpt a woman's body into a figure thatʼs feminine and beautiful. With each procedure, my goal is to create something that appears very pretty and very natural. Every plastic surgeon has procedures that are their favorites thatʼs why itʼs so important that those considering plastic surgery to do their homework when finding a surgeon. Ask to see before and after photos— this offers a good idea of what the surgeon can do. Great surgeons are the ones who are truly passionate about what they do, they strive to learn more, work harder, produce great results, and they are compassionate with their patients. I worked under some of the best cosmetic and reconstructive surgeons during my training, and learned so much from their outstanding skill and incredible eye for surgical detail. Eventually, I developed my own signature strategy for different procedures. Improvement to perfection in my profession is the ultimate goal. ST: What is the biggest misconception about having plastic surgery? People are consumed with which celebrities have work done, but nobody stays young looking forever. What’s the big deal? DENNIS: We love celebrities and gossip, it's entertaining to know who had what done. However, plastic surgery is not just for celebrities or the vain. Everyone gets plastic surgery — your friends, family, co-workers, neighbors... you just don't know it if the surgeon has done the job correctly. There's nothing wrong with having plastic surgery to make yourself feel better, give you more confidence, and bring about a more positive outlook in your life. My goal is to offer results that appear natural, so everyone thinks you look great because you have been taking care of yourself, working out and have good genes. People should feel comfortable about how they look at any age. How they want to accomplish that is up to them. Nobody needs to know your secrets. President Harry S. Truman once said, “A pessimist is one who makes difficulties of his opportunities and an optimist is one who makes opportunities of his difficulties.” Which do you think will reach their goals, live a happy life, and achieve their dreams? Imagine interviewing two people who have identical skills, but one is always grumbling about how unfair life is, while the other one talks about what wonderful possibilities exist. Who would you want to hire? Whom do you think would do a better job? Naturally, you would gravitate toward the optimist. If you choose the pessimist, you would be setting yourself up for aggravation and disappointment, not to mention the negative impact on your staff and customers. Pessimism brings everyone down, not just the person with the negative attitude. Pessimism is nothing more than self-sabotage. Expecting the worst is not being realistic. Realists hope for the best but prepare for the worst. Pessimists canʼt imagine the best, so only prepare for the worst. And, if the worst never happens? Pessimists often find the worst possible result simply to prove that their concerns were right. The question becomes, would you rather be right than happy? That's not being realistic either. That's being self-defeating. Pessimism can rob you of your energy, sap you of your strength, and drain you of your dreams. Optimism is the remedy. Optimism doesn't mean pretending life is always wonderful. Optimism means embracing reality. You accept that there will be bad days, but also good days. When you're grounded in reality, you know where you are and how far you need to go. Once you know how far your goal may be from where you are, optimism can give you the motivation to make plans to get to where you want to go. Pessimists see life as one problem after another. Optimists see life as one opportunity after another. How you look at life can drastically affect how much you enjoy your life. Optimists expect the best out of life. If you were not raised with this attitude, take comfort: it can be learned. Optimism is based on three basic tenets, according to Mary Kay Mueller in her book, “Taking Care of Me: The Habits of Happiness”:
Optimists See Life As: Bad things do happen in life, but they are temporary. Bad things in life are limited in scope and tend to be small or insignificant. People have control over their environments. Pessimists Reverse The Tables: Good things in life are temporary. Good things in life are limited – small or insignificant. People have no control over their environments. Optimists help create some of the good they come to expect, so they are probably right more than not – and they donʼt waste time worrying about what theyʼre not right about. Optimism relaxes people. When we are relaxed, there is better blood flow to the brain, which results in more energy and creativity in your life. Consider how optimism turned this situation around. Within a seven
year time span, a woman's mother died, her husband divorced her, and she found herself living in poverty just one step away from being homeless. In her spare time, she wrote a book that 12 publishers rejected. Finally one publisher accepted her book about a boy named Harry Potter. And then she wrote a few more books, which became blockbuster movies, and even spawned a theme park. J.K. Rowling was an optimist who's now a billionaire. How far in life would she have gotten by being a pessimist?
Does it make sense that pessimists tend to blame others or circumstances for their failures? Pessimism is nothing more than self-sabotage. Expecting the worst is not being realistic. Pessimists can’t imagine the best, so only prepare for the worst. Pessimism can rob you of your energy, sap you of your strength, and drain you of your dreams. There is virtually nothing that you canʼt do if you set your mind to it. You cannot control events in your life, but you can control how you react. Do you want to be a pessimist and have no hope for a better future? Or would you rather be an optimist and believe you can achieve a better future? There once was an old man who had many troubles. No matter what hardship life handed him, he faced each obstacle with a smile and cheery disposition. A friend finally asked him how he managed to stay so happy despite his challenges. The old man quickly answered: “Well, the Good Book often says, ʻAnd it came to pass,ʼ but never once does it say, ʻIt came to stay.ʼ” BHT

“Entertaining can be a monumental task, and if you think of it only in that way it is overwhelming. These easy to follow tips make entertaining less monumental and more enjoyable.” — Mark Addison
WANT to make your event an affair to remember?
Take a lesson from entertaining guru Mark Addison as he walks us through the steps needed for a fabulous party. ST: What are 3 TIPS to creating a fabulous event? MARK: The food, drinks, music — even the guest list can make or break an event. But these 3 key points always top my priority list. 1. When hosting a memorable event at home, make sure you as the host are part of the memories! Keep décor, recipes and cocktails simple so you are out of the kitchen, out from behind the bar and enjoying the party with your guests. The key to enjoying your own party is to plan ahead and craft a menu that is 50/50; 50% cold or room temperature items that can be prepared in advance (1-2 days before) and 50% that needs your attention the day of and/or during the party.
ing a theme is the fun part of planning. Use the theme as your guide for all decisions from the invitations to the menu, and thread the theme throughout the entirety of the event right down to the music and entertainment. Food and drinks should always be playful and contribute to the theme! One of my favorite mantras is a different take on the 3 Rs – reuse, recycle, and repurpose. Recycling and repurposing is an excellent way to add a touch of something new/modern, but it also keeps an item’s old-fashioned charm. Give vintage items a fresh twist with something modern, for instance: use older, more vintage looking napkins with a modern napkin ring and vice versa. Heirloom touches not only soften a modern tabletop, but adds personality and a story: where it came from, who owned it, how much you did or didn’t pay for it. Have fun in creating a mix-match table.
3.
2. Start with a simple theme or color palette. Build from there and have fun with it! More is more! Going over the top gives you a place to edit from. Creating a signature party drink adds personality and gives guests something to talk about as well as enjoy.
Make your party more memorable with a signature drink. It’s always more impressive than a standard bar and more important, it gets you out from behind the bar during the party. Your specialty cocktail should tie to the theme or color palette, and be able to be made in large batches with only a garnish or topper of sparkling wine or soda when it’s served. Punches make a perfect signature drink (w/o spirits) and have come back in fashion. They can be served anytime of year, and for every occasion!
OUTDOOR Entertaining LA STYLE ST: Outdoor entertaining plays a big part in our LA lifestyle. Any not to complicated suggestions for throwing an exceptional weekend BBQ? MARK: The charm of a BBQ is people coming together to make and enjoy delicious food, while enjoying the outdoors. Al fresco dining as it’s formally referred should always be causal and have a party-like atmosphere. Family-style dining is ideal when dining al fresco in the summer. Large platters of freshly grilled meats and vegetables paired with lightly dressed simple salads are a fitting menu for a laid back party atmosphere. An outdoor grill is indispensable for LA entertaining. I use mine practically everyday during the summer. There is something about the aroma and flavor of grilled foods and when paired with a classic potato salad — it is the epitome of casual summer dining.

MESS-Free BBQ Party TIPS • Use stemless glassware. Glasses are more stable and less likely to be knocked over which translates into less mess at the party.
• Instead of serving drinks/punch in pitchers, set out beverage dispensers with spouts. It is much more sanitary, holds several gallons, and prevents spillage. •
Put sauces and marinades in squeeze bottles for mess-free marinating.

THE SKINNY CONFIDENTIAL By Lauryn Evarts “Life doesn't have to be complicated. Keep food choices, workout, and skin care routine simple. Balance is sustainable. Balance represents a healthy lifestyle. And at the end of day a healthy, balanced lifestyle is key.” — Lauryn CREATOR of the lifestyle brand, blog, and book —
"The Skinny Confidential," Lauryn Evarts, says her philosophy about life is simple, “Balance is everything. When you feel balanced, you feel beautiful, energized, and happy.” The Skinny Confidential lifestyle is for women everywhere who are looking to balance every aspect of their lives. This includes food, relationships, friendships, fashion, health, and everything in between.
Let's start with food. There is so much about foods that are good or foods to stay away from it gets crazy. Isn’t there a simple map to follow to eat healthy, but not feel deprived and hungry all the time? I am a big believer in keeping things simple. This means eating clean, whole foods that heal the body from the inside out. Instead, of using pimple cream to heal acne, I eat foods that promote healing acne from the inside out. Squash, avocado, lemon, watermelon are filled with vitamins, minerals, and amino acids that promote healthy skin, hair and nails. We are what we eat so keep it clean and simple. The less ingredients listed the better. If it has more than five ingredients or contains an ingredient I can't pronounce or don't know what it is — I donʼt buy it. With regards to the food we consume each day, counting calories is so 2001. In 2014, fresh, whole foods filled with nutrients is what we need to eat.
Quick, easy, fresh, recipes perfect for women on the go who don't have time to whip up a salmon and veggies for lunch everyday. Here we go again... the counting calories thing. With the other 100 things a woman has to do every day, counting calories generally isn’t a priority. What’s a no hassle marker for gauging our daily intake? Keep it simple when it comes to food... don't complicate meals. Iʼm a big fan of spices and herbs which are easy, accessible and fresh. Forget sauces/toppings. Fresh herbs and spices provide added flavor. Instead, of artificial

sweeteners try cinnamon and nutmeg. Replace chemical-filled ketchup with chili flakes. Get rid of store bought, nasty, GMO-filled dressing, make your own! All you need is lemon, red wine vinegar, basil and a sprinkle of Italian herbs. Delicious. A favorite is my recipe for 2-ingredient pancakes. Think of bananas with eggs. Itʼs the tastiest pancake recipe with only two ingredients. Add a little cinnamon, a few berries and itʼs something everyone enjoys.
Cocktails Anyone?
Natural Anti-Aging Tips
We all enjoy a cocktail, but can feel guilty afterward about drinking it. Suggestions? There is an entire section on cocktails in my book. When drinking alcohol, I like to keep it as clean as possible. I balance my diet like a checkbook. If I'm drinking alcohol, I add clean ingredients like Meyer lemon, mint, or lavender (great antioxidant). If I'm drinking wine, I stick to the lightest wines available. If I'm drinking beer, I avoid any beer with artificial flavors and stick to lighter beers. You'll find my favorite alcohol beverage in my book: the probiotic-filled drink Kombucha champagne (that's right champagne with probiotics! It's so yummy).
No doubt we never get enough anti-aging advice. Where is a reasonable place to start? I find the simpliest routine works best and is the one we stick with. I love using an all natural bar of soap to wash my face. It's literally the simplest tip ever but works wonders. Instead, of taking my makeup off with typical makeup remover, I use grape seed or almond oil. Typical makeup remover is the culprit behind those tiny white dots under your eyes that look like small pores. One swipe of almond or grape seed oil removes all my makeup with no residue. When I need to use a stronger lotion or sunscreen, I balance it out with my natural soap and oils. Simple. Which brings me to one of my main beauty secrets — PREVENTION. This means the daily use of sunscreen on my face, neck, arms, and hands. I'm also a huge fan of hats. I keep one in my car at all times. When I'm running into the market or grabbing the mail, I wear a hat. I avoid sunroofs and I have invested in a beach umbrella, and I stick to spray tanning instead of tanning beds. If I'm able to prevent any kind of aging, I do it. Because why not?
The Scoop On Exercise We know the importance of exercise, but a packed schedule can interfere with our best workout intentions. Even with exercise I keep it simple. Healing ourselves from the inside out takes many forms, and one that works for me is to sweat once a day. It's basic, simple and something I swear by. Telling myself I am going to sweat once a day sets the tone for me to exercise. I don't have a set schedule each day... I play it by ear and trade off between strength training and cardio keeping in mind my goal is to sweat once a day. Some days it's yoga, some days it's hiking, and some days I'll do Skinny Confidential approved workouts which I detail in my book. The important element is to move your body somehow-someway everyday to get your endorphins working. This leads to a active, happy, and energized way of life. I love walking. I walk my dog, walk to the store, take the stairs instead of an elevator. Why would you ever take an elevator when you can take stairs?

BEST way BEST body ask the trainer —Shaun Ryan Is Breakfast The Most Important Meal Of The Day?
NO. A great way to start the day is to skip breakfast which shifts your body into fat-burn mode after 12-16 hours of fasting; it takes time to acclimate to this unless you adapt quickly to change. This saves you breakfast calories while enhancing the fast you had while asleep. Another way to start the day: Iʼm a fan of Bulletproof Coffee: Organic coffee; 1-2 tbs organic Coconut Oil; 1-2 tbs Kerrygold's Butter. Perhaps some organic fair-trade cacoa for kicks. This keeps appetite at bay for up to 5 hours.
BURNING BODY FAT
Best Workout For Legs Glutes, Quads, Hamstrings
Squats: Target every portion of the lower body—legs & stomach. Squeeze stomach/egs muscles while doing squats; do 3 sets of 18 reps. Hold 5-10 pound weights in each hand during the exercise. Is Fasting Bad For The Body? Intermittent Fasting is good to lose unwanted weight. Eat healthy and unrestricted 5 days/ 2 days limit food window and intake dramatically. It takes getting used to but research now proves fasting improves health in many ways while boosting healthy weight-loss results. Example: Monday & Thursday no food until 5-8 pm; females daily calories 500/men 600. I take and recommend a scoop of pure grassfed whey protein in water after workouts. Have organic coffee/tea prior to your food window. Too Hard? Eat berries pre your food window. Get The Best Results From A Workout Bring a shaker cup with a scoop of Whey Protein from grass-fed, free-range cows; drink immediately after a workout. Omit fructose/ sugar for 2-3 hours after to ensure a fat-burn. Whey doesnʼt work? Use a quality rice or pea protein instead. Get adequate rest thatʼs when results occur. I use Stronger, Faster, Healthier so much I sell it. They have great products. VISIT: www.sfh.com for their products.

Step Up On Platform, Kick Back And Front: Hold 5-10 pound weights in each hand, keep back straight, knee bent 90-degree angle; start with right leg 3 sets of 18 reps, change to left leg. Keep stomach muscles pulled in and tight.
WHAT CARBS ARE ACCEPTABLE? Carbs are best in forms of vegetables. Eat them in abundance. A piece of fruit a day is alright, but fruit is sugar and the villain of carbs, especially refined/ processed sugar which is responsible for most dietary body-weight issues. Omit juice and eat real fruit. You get fiber, nutrients and real flavor. Some people (myself included) need complex carbs like oatmeal, but keep to 25-50 carbs/ day. Go with what feels right for your body. Hereʼs a guilt-free bread thatʼs tasty, gluten-free, healthy and easy to make: The Life-Changing Loaf of Bread — makes one loaf INGREDIENTS 1 cup / 135g sunflower seeds • ½ cup / 90g flax seeds • 2 Tbsp. chia seeds ½ cup / 65g hazelnuts or almonds • 1 ½ cups / 145g rolled oats 4 Tbsp. psyllium seed husks (3 Tbsp. if using psyllium husk powder) 1 tsp fine grain sea salt-add ½ tsp. if using coarse salt • 1½ cups/350ml water 1 Tbsp. maple syrup (for sugar-free diets, use a pinch of stevia) 3 Tbsp. melted coconut oil or ghee DIRECTIONS — In a flexible, silicon loaf pan combine dry ingredients, stir well. Whisk maple syrup, oil, water together in a measuring cup add to dry ingredients; mix until all is completely soaked and dough is very thick; if dough is too thick to stir add 1-2 tsp of water until manageable). Smooth top with back of a spoon. Place on the counter for at least 2 hours, all day or overnight. If dough is ready it will retain its shape even when you pull the sides of the loaf pan away from it. — Preheat oven to 350°F / 175°C. — Place loaf pan in oven on middle rack; bake 20 min. Remove bread from loaf pan, place upside down directly on rack; bake for 30-40 minutes more. Bread is done when it sounds hollow when tapped. Cool completely before slicing. — Store bread in a tightly sealed container for up to five days. Freezes well. Slice before freezing for quick and easy toast!
Best Way To Burn Fat
Tap into fat stores with a lasting impact beyond the duration of a workout: drink organic coffee or organic green tea (sugar-free) prior to exercise and workout on an empty stomach preferably in early morning. High Intensity Intervals can shed fat up to 36-hours post-workout. DONʼT do these more than 3 times a week as it can be harsh on your adrenals and immune system and can be counter-productive to your fat-burning goals.
FOOD THAT BURN BELLY FAT Almonds • Protein powder • Eggs Olive oil • Berries • Oatmeal Lean meat • Salmon • Tuna • Turkey Peanut Butter • Milk • Apples Tomatoes • Avocados
Are Crunches Good? Great but maintain proper form: a count of 2,2,2 with no momentum. I do them on an exercise ball but do them wherever it fits your needs. The 2,2,2 is the movement of crunching up for 2 seconds; hold the crunch at the top of the move 2 seconds; return to the start position for 2 seconds. Go into the next rep without pausing—resting minimizes the effects of the workout. The goal is to push the small of your back into the ball or ground so itʼs flat against it which engages your abs along with your transverse abs, but keep stomach sucked in —not flexed. Either way is fine if you work your transverse abs as well. Keep momentum out of the equation or you will end up cheating using other muscles instead of just your abs. BHT

falls are a significant mortality, morbidity and health care cost factor for the elderly especially over 70 years of age. The public and most healthcare providers are unaware that this is a treatable and preventable phenomenon. Factors involved include: • Dysfunction of the inner ear (vestibular system). • Brain (cerebellum and brain stem).
• •
Musculoskeletal system (back-spine).
Pelvis, Hips, Knees, Ankles, Legs, Muscles, etc. • Nerves (neuropathy) and other health issues (diabetes), etc. Correcting balance problems begins with a patientʼs primary and/or specialty (ENT) and a comprehensive physical medical evaluation assessing the above issues. This can involve a VENG test (videoelectronystagmography) we perform at our CliniCare Spinal Rehab Medical Group facility on a regular basis specific for purposes of analyzing a patientʼs balance difficulties. With a proper diagnosis, an individualized balance physical therapy treatment program can be initiated. The typical hour therapy session shown in a patientʼs video includes general cardio type exercise, per the patients tolerance. Included can be one of two types of bicycles, upper body ergonometer (arm bikeUBE), and treadmill. Research shows that vigorous exercise is a significant way to improve and maintain brain function due to the demands on the brain to coordinate all of the musculature and body functions. Another component of therapy is specific balance exercises. Seen in a patientʼs video is the patient bouncing on a swiss ball which exercises the legs and is a core stabilization exercise. The mini trampoline/
Falls are the leading cause of death due to injury among the elderly. One third of those over 65 fall each year which acccounts for 87% of all fractures in the elderly. Falls account for 25% of all hospital admissions, 40% of all nursing home admissions; 40% of those admitted do not return to independent living; 25% die within a year. rebounder exercises the legs, circulation and can be done with arthritic knees, backs, etc. The patient also focuses on a point outside which is a brain/eye coordinative exercise. Next, the medicine ball exercise where a patient follows a specific point on the ball while moving it in a circle 10 times each way. This is an extremely important oculomotor exercise for the brain and vestibular systems. The next component of therapy are the VENG exercises using goggles with a camera on the eye. A therapist observes as the patient does two types of exercises while following moving points on the monitor. Position head exercises are for the inner ear/vestibular system, the other are eye exercises for the oculomotor/ brain component. The patient moves onto the KAT balance system where they stand on a movable platform hooked up to a video game type monitor where they move a platform which then moves the cursor on the screen through a maze. This neurologic exercise coordinates ankles, hips and leg function with the brain functions. Lastly, the patient receives a vibratory massage/ myocardial release to the lower extremities, spine and torso, so that the muscles and joints are loosened up after the session. BHT

and I are addicted to ping pong. In our wildest dreams we never envisioned looking forward to playing this game almost every day, having fun while we get better and better. When our three sons were young we had a ping pong table on our patio, but that was years ago (two sons are now in their 50's and our oldest just turned 60). And as for my husband and I, for nearly 56 of our 66 years of marriage we gratefully enjoyed a life filled with exciting travels and all sorts of sports participation. Our advancing birthdays, however, necessitated radical changes in our lifestyle. As age increased, activities decreased. Marty gave up his private pilot license which afforded us many years of memorable family and friend trips to interesting places. We also had to say goodbye to tennis, water skiing, snow skiing, golf, ballroom dancing and worldwide travels. Changes not to our liking, but ones we had to accommodate. Health professionals agree exercise for the body and mind are very important, especially for seniors. Most focus on walking and swimming as the best exercise for octogenarians. It may be the best exercise, but it was not our favorite, so I tried yoga, T'ai chi, trainers, exercise classes and even attempted lawn bowling. None were substitutes for the active life we had led. Then, while watching the Dr. Oz show a light went off as he went on and on about the benefits of ping pong for seniors. Ping pong? An unlikely choice I would have thought, but I wondered why other doctors hadnʼt thought to follow Dr. Ozʼs lead to encourage ping pong among their patients. As I watched it became clear why Dr. Oz supports the sport, and why more seniors arenʼt enjoying its vast benefits. According to Dr. Oz the game needs hand-eye coordination, quick decision-making and rapid eye movement. The game also requires the brain to do intensely fast analysis. Predicting where the ball will fall demands mental power and constant recalculation. Turns out ping pong can help prevent Alzheimer's as well. Studies show that simple movements within the game of ping pong allow the human brain to grow at any age. Recently, scientists revolutionized our understanding of the brain and came up with a concept called, "Neuroplasticity." Every time we engage in a new activity, a new way of thinking, a new set of movements, a new anything, we create new pathways in our brain. Creating new pathways (Neuropathways) likened to building new muscle tissue in our arms or legs — makes our muscles and bodies stronger. And, new Neuropathways make our brains function better and stronger. Understanding the importance of this new science, our eldest son had a ping-pong table delivered to our home. He set it up outdoors sharing space within a small basketball area and insisted we take lessons, so we are. And itʼs working. We are very quickly playing far beyond our expectations having taken only 17-half hour lessons. Our instructor marvels at Marty's improvement and Iʼm thrilled with mine. This ping pong table is the greatest gift. Fun and comes with health benefits! When we began, Marty could hardly hit the ball back. Now, he's slamming the ball, even beating our son Richard (who enjoyed it more than Marty did!). My reflexes are getting better as well. My husband and I look forward to our lessons and our nightly ping pong games so much we invested in professional paddles, a plastic cover to receive bird 'poop', a special cover for the rain, spectator chairs, we fenced in an area, installed lights and heat lamps, bought a gross amount of ping-pong balls and a device for picking them up. Our ritual is to take off the cover, set up our box of 144 balls on a shelf near the table and play until all balls are all on the ground. Sometimes thatʼs not enough, so we pick up a few more balls and continue as we like to end the night with each of us having a winning shot. Life is fun again, my husband and I are spending more quality time together and we are so inspired that with the enthusiastic encouragement of our teacher, Wei, we entered the "85-year and Over" tournament this past June, just a few days after my birthday, — and won medals. I am now in training for the tournament next year! Grapefruit Inferno
INGREDIENTS
DIRECTIONS
• 1.5 oz Mezcal • 1.5 grapefruit juice (fresh) • 5 oz fresh ginger syrup • 5 dashes of Hell Fire Bitters • 2 oz Bohemia
Build cocktail in a Collins glass and stir. Garnish with Jalapeño slices.
Using an electric mixer, cream butter sugar. Beat in the egg extracts. Gradually add flour, baking powder and salt to the creamed mixture, mixing well. Divide dough into fourths; cover/refrigerate for 30-60 minutes, or until easy to handle. If dough is too warm and soft, it will be hard to shape properly. Remove one piece of dough from refrigerator at a time, roll quickly into 1-inch balls (15 balls per quarter portion of dough), and shape balls quickly into 3-inch by fingers, tapering tips very slightly. Using the flat tip of a table knife, make an indentation on the finger tip for a fingernail. With the unsharp edge of a knife, make two sets of three slashes on each finger for knuckle areas (consult your own finger for accuracy!). Using knife held vertically, score bottom end of finger, to create ragged “torn off” look. Place fingers 2 inches apart on prepared baking sheets. They will not spread out. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool for 5-10 minutes, and then squeeze a small amount of red gel on nail bed, outlining edge of nail bed. Press a sliced almond over gel for nail, allowing gel to ooze around nail. (Choose wellshaped almonds and turn them so the whitest side is facing up.) For maximum gross-out effect, squeeze a bit more red gel to decorate the bloody stump end of the finger. Remove cookies to wire racks to cool. Makes about 60 cookies. Make ahead: Plain cookies may be made weeks ahead, wrapped tightly and frozen without gel and fingernail. Thaw and decorate with gel and fingernail almonds. Smoking is bad but especially for women. Statistics show the younger a person starts smoking the harder it is to quit. About 1 out of 5 deaths are from heart disease and related to smoking; 1 in 4 women die from heart disease — the #1 killer of women. Every minute in America a woman dies of a heart attack, stroke or other cardiovascular disease. Every cigarette you smoke makes you more likely to die from heart disease. If you smoke to stay thin, options are available other than slowly killing yourself. STOP smoking and try these. HOT YOGA — itʼs not a fad. Itʼs been around for centuries. I take a hot yoga class every day. Celebs, royalty, athletes, you name it use Hot Yoga to look and feel better. Anyone can do it. Classes are structured so if you need a break you can
walk out and take a breath. Then return and pickup where you left off. Why is Hot Yoga So Fabulous? Flexibility: Nobody summer@bhtmag.com is forced to be a contortionist. The heat allows you to safely reach new levels of posturing; therapeutic and anti-oxidant for your body as you inch into a deeper level of strength. Yoga is low impact and doesnʼt hurt joints. Yoga builds muscle. Breath: Hot Yoga is holding a posture with deep breathing in an environment of heat; an incredible health/beauty advantage as it floods the blood stream, lungs, skin, every pore in our bodies with oxygen, the ultimate in anti-aging to fight wrinkles and bring blood flow into our skin. Cardio: Canʼt sleep, restless, bored, tired, addicted to coffee, cigarettes, alcohol, bad eating? Kiss addictions goodbye. Hot Yoga gets you in a serious mindset of health and well-being. Each class inspires you deeper into your inner-self as you lose weight, feel healthier, stronger, younger, sleep better, feel more alive. Forget diets and smoking to keep your weight in check. Burn up to 1,000 calories a class. Yep, you read it right! And what will you crave most? WATER. Soon water will be your drink of choice as you feel your body come alive with youth, inner well being and strength. Healing: There is no better place to heal your inner-child than Hot Yoga Yoga is therapy for body, mind and spirit. People with diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma, depression, arthritis and obesity are reborn. BHT

JOB CORPS 50th Anniversary and YWCA Greater Los Angeles Commencement Ceremony
Faye Washington, President & CEO of YWCA Greater Los Angeles, Maria Shriver, Supervisor-Elect Hilda Solis, Lou Gossett Jr.
THE Nationʼs largest, most comprehensive educational, vocational and social skills
training program for young graduating adults helping them into job opportunities was held at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Supervisor-Elect Hilda Solis delivered the keynote speech along with film star Lou Gossett Jr., as well as Maria Shriver who was on hand to offer support for the national celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Sargent Shriverʼs founding of the Job Corps Program. The YWCA Greater Los Angeles presented its first “Sargent Shriver Legacy” award posthumously to Shriver himself and to his family, who have assisted the growth and success of his vision — all as part of the YWCA GLAʼs graduation ceremonies for its 2014 Job Corps class at which 300 formerly at-risk young people will move into promising jobs positions for which they have been specifically trained. “The YWCA Greater Los Angeles Job Corps Program is so proud to celebrate 50 years of achievement in training young people to successfully enter the workforce and to have been part of the YWCA Greater Los Angeles Job Corps programʼs half century of astonishing success,” stated Solis. “YWCA GLA has administered the Los Angeles Job Corps Program since 1965 and we have been at the forefront of its growth as a premier workforce development opportunity for youth since the beginning. As a cornerstone of our commemorative celebration, we are proud to salute Sargent Shriverʼs visionary leadership in bringing the Job Corps Program to fruition. Without his vision, strength, humanity and determination, millions of young people may never have fulfilled their promise of living their best lives." Other speakers at this yearʼs ceremony include “Extant” Star and Academy Awardwinning Actor Lou Gossett Jr. and Assembly member Isadore Hall, who presented each of the graduating students with a proclamation. Thousands of young people have moved into successful lives through the YWCA Greater Los Angeles' administration of Shriverʼs Job Corps program. The YWCA Greater Los Angeles has been serving the L.A. area since 1894, and began administering the L.A. Job Corps Program in 1965. Job Corps, sponsored by the Department of Labor, is the nationʼs largest and most comprehensive educational, vocational and social skills training program and provides residential and non-residential programming at no cost to homeless, emancipated, and at-risk youth ages 16-24. Job Corps employs a holistic career development training model that integrates the teaching of academic, vocational, employability skills, social competencies and wellness/health services. Chef of the Month ARIANA’S KITCHEN Hello all you alluring readers! Born in Romania, raised in Tel Aviv and New York. Actress, model , chef de cuisine and mother of LA swag team Odelia and Ornela. I would love to share with all you lovelies some of my top secret recipes!! This month's recipe is Parjoale Moldovenesti ( Romanian meat Patties)It is a traditional mouthwatering Romanian dish!!
A peaceful beach setting in a cozy little restaurant called Piccolo is a perfect

The Pomodori E Burrate — heirloom tomatoes, imported burrata, basil, larino olive oil was soft and velvety. The Capesante — seared sea scallops, parmesan-truffle fondue, was light and fluffy as a feather pillow. Our main course were the Agnello a natural lamb shank, slow-braised rhubarb-port; an the Tuscan Melon Risotto was so godly it penetrated our souls and titillated our senses! The Tagliat — natural Australian Kobe NY steak (12 oz) was seared and sliced, lemon-thyme pesto, maldon salt, fully luscious. For our massive sweet tooth we ordered Lingotto, warm valrhona chocolate with venetian “elisir” dressed with balsamic syrup! Totally heavenly. And, the Bignole— pastry puffs filled with Belgian gianduja chocolate cream that made us scream ;))) a total Bignolegasm! Picollo is wonderful for dates and a quiet dinner. WHILE
visiting our mom in Romania a few weeks ago, we got to enjoy her yummy home cooking. It brought back memories of the delicious food of our home country. As she is our VERY favorite chef we asked her to share one of our favorite dishes. Raised in Tel Aviv and New York, our mom Ariana Samuels was an actress, model and the ultimate Chef de Cuisine. Growing up we enjoyed scrumptious meals she prepared each day. Here is her TOP SECRET RECIPE for Parjoale Moldovenesti: Romanian meat patties; a very mouthwatering Romanian dish! With a bun or surrounded with vegetables these meat patties are easy for barbecuing, amazing as meatballs and quick for entertaining. INGREDIENTS 2 1/2 pounds ground beef chuck • 3 garlic cloves finely chopped 2 medium onions finely chopped • 3 teaspoons salt 1 large potato peeled and grated • 3 slices bread 1/2 cup water • 2 large eggs beaten 1/4 cup flour • 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil Place onions, beef, garlic and potato in large bowl. Add salt, mix well using hands or a wooden spoon. Place bread and water in a bowl and soften with fingers. Add to meat mixture and mix well. Shape into 16 patties. Dredge each patty in flour and egg. Allow to dry while heating oil. Place oil in a large skillet over medium heat. When hot, carefully add patties and fry slowly in batches, adding oil if necessary; 7-10 minutes per side. YUM YUM!!
CHURCH KEY

GRACIAS MADRE
WEST
Hollywood you surprise us over and over again with such unique tres chic restaurants! The Church Key is one of those refreshing one-of-a-kind eateries! After a Saturday evening of drinking we decided Sunday brunch at Church Key would be exactly what we needed to nourish our over-partied playboy bods. Tall ceilings, boisterous sexy crowd, avante garde fashionistas, gorgeous wannabe actors and "American Dimsum." We had a choice to order off the menu and off the Pan Am carts that were constantly passing by — were being pushed by charming "flight attendants." From the menu we ordered the Toad in the Hole — "Croque Madame" Gruyere Fondue; smoked bacon was very thick and buttery, the second it entered our mouth we were in ecstasy! Chilaquiles— chorizo, soft scrambled eggs-queso fresco-salsa verde, and the New York Steak, cornbread custard, grilled corn, classic Béarnaise so tender we couldnʼt wait to put it in our kissers! From the carts we had their famous Pigs Ears Cheetos — crispy pig ear chips topped with a yummy cheesy powder — the taste was unusual and extraordinarily palatable. Dessert Time! Off the cart we ordered the Monkey Bread — sticky, cinnamoni and tres aromatic and off the menu the Brioche Donuts- brown butterglaze — the cinnamon caramel made us groan with pleasure! Church Key is a superb eatery if you are looking for an eclectic and loud happening crowd.

THIS
secret little hideaway is a darling place where the Pacific Palisades local crowd dines — and not many outsiders even know about. Noisy and fun, you wonʼt find a typical Hollywood wannabe crowd, but big stars are known to drop in and out quite frequently. This restaurant is the most perfect place for family celebrations! For starters we had the Spicy Wok Fired Edamame and the Spicy Tuna on Crispy Rice — slightly crisp with many intense flavors. We also enjoyed the Asian "Chopper" with tempura rock shrimp and yuzu dressing — sexy with a tarty flair. Our main dished were the Salmon Teriyaki — plumped and pink as the finest silicone lips in southern California, and a Wing Ding Burger — yes a burger in an Asian restaurant —and a pretty damn good one thank you very much! The burger was pleasantly herbed and went oh so well with the delicious Szechuan fries. The portions are small, but loaded with scrumptious flavors! For dessert we decided on the sweet piquant Sake ;))) and ordered the Kokushimuso — light and smooth with a tangy flavor. It got us slightly sloshed, but left us smiling and quite satiated. Pear Dragon is an informal fun restaurant and the cuisine is simply all around splendid.

VEGETARIANS out there this restaurant
should be on your #1 list! Gracias Madre is a vegan bougie eatery with a beautiful outside patio offering delicious green cuisine. We started with GRILLED CORN — corn on the cob, chipotle aioli, pumpkin seed parmesan, COLIFLOR FRITO — flash-fried cauliflower, cashew nacho cheese, lemon... totally garden fresh. Our main dishes: QUESADILLAS — potatoes and chorizo - butternut squash, caramelized onion, corn, purslane, and cherry tomato was just magnetic. TOSTADAS — Coconut ceviche, beans, Escabeche, and guacamole was a garden fresh feast. For dessert we were totally seduced by the STRAWBERRY CHEESECAKE — 100% fresh strawberry sauce, orange cashew cream, delicate and tres gratifying. The FLAN — homemade and to-die-for with burnt sugar caramel —seriously it was as round and perky and sexy as dear Matthew McConaughey tuchas! Gracias Madre is an artsy upscale vegan Mexican restaurant with Hollywood panache everywhere. For all you carnivores don't say you haven't been warned!
