OCEANA Announces $3 Million Grant From The LEONARDO DICAPRIO FOUNDATION THE largest international advocacy group working to protect the worldʼs

oceans — OCEANA — announced that a $3 million grant was given to them from the Leonardo DiCaprio foundation. The grant will help support Oceanaʼs work to advocate for responsible fishing measures, including an effort to ban California drift gillnets. “The foundation and Leoʼs support for campaigns like sharks and other marine animals and for ocean habitats in the Pacific and Arctic includes some of the most productive ocean places in the world. The net impact will be a much more abundant and biodiverse ocean that has many millions more sharks and critical and amazing marine animals, wilder and more pristine ocean habitats and oceans that can feed over a billion people, many of them hungry — a healthy seafood meal each day,” stated Oceana CEO Andy Sharpless. “Protecting our planetʼs oceans and the marine species that call it home is one of the most pressing substantiability crises facing humanity today and a moral imperative that we must acknowledge. Itʼs my hope this grant will help Oceana continue the tremendous work they do daily on behalf of our oceans,” said DiCaprio. Spread over three-years, the $3 million grant is the first marine conservation grant made following the foundationʼs 11th Hour Charity Auction held at Christieʼs last year. The grant supports the organizationʼs work, from the south of Chile to the north of Alaska, preserving ecologically important ocean areas and Oceanaʼs campaigns including a ban on drift gillnets off California to protect dolphins, whales, turtles and other marine animals from being caught and killed as “bycatch.” Gillnets targeting swordfish and thresher sharks are found off Southern California, are a mile-long in diameter and catch and kill large numbers of non-targeted marine animals such as sperm whales, gray whales, dolphins, sharks, sea turtles, elephant seals, and sea lions. In response to a Freedom of Information Act from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Oceana received hundreds of photos of animals caught and killed by this destructive gear. “We are incredibly grateful to our friends at Christieʼs who made last yearʼs 11th Hour Auction for the foundation such a success, they made this grant to Oceana possible. We are excited to support Oceanaʼs efforts to win real policy change and protection for vital habitats and species throughout the Pacific and Arctic oceans,” stated Justin Winters, Executive Director of the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation. The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation is dedicated to protecting Earthʼs last wild places and fostering a harmonious relationship between humanity and the natural world. Since 1998, the Foundation has worked on environmental and humanitarian issues through grant making, campaigning and projects focused on wildlife and habitat preservation, healthy oceans, water access, climate change and disaster relief. Its approach to philanthropy for a better planet relies upon active collaboration with effective organizations and funders who share similar goals. The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation is a component fund of the California Community Foundation. BHT www.leonardodicaprio.org. www.oceana.org.

Takowsky, Nataliya,

can say Beverly Hills is a city of cry baby, uppity light-weights who donʼt get their hands dirty or feet wet. My kids and friends decided to jump in with both feet AND hands AND bodies AND faces to raise funds for the the Gavin R. Stephens Foundation for the Blind and Visually Impaired at its MUD RUN at the Lake in Oak Canyon Park in Irvine. It was pure action. Thousands of people came to support and compete in this messy, adrenaline pumping event that put runners fitness and endurance to the test, separating MEN from the boys and WOMEN from the girls. It was a muddy adventure on a 5K course of 12 mud pits, rolling hills and professionally built obstacles. Adding flair to the affair were live bands, a beer garden for a post-race party, food, drinks, and a kids mud race. I thought my BHT crew would shutter at mud in their hair on their faces and clinging to every inch of their bodies. NOT SO! They were true warriors and ran through the finish line in a streak of fabulous. For information on the next Mud Run in June which we wonʼt miss! visit: irvinelakemudrun.com/register/

YOGA KEEPS YOU FIT FOR LIFE Yoga Makes The World A Better Place By YogaFit Founder & Fitness Expert Beth Shaw

Post Traumatic Stress

AND

Returning Veterans

WE are witnessing an unprecedented time in our Armed

Forces where deaths by suicide outweigh deaths incurred in combat. Military service members returning home are fraught with anxiety, stress and broken relationships. These men and women put their lives on the line for our freedom, and freedom for people around the world. We can't ignore their need for help. A common condition is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD); a severe condition that develops after a person is exposed to traumatic events. Symptoms are ongoing flashbacks, avoiding thoughts/people associated with the event, numbing memories with alcohol/drugs and exhibiting high levels of anxiety. Headaches, muscle tension, chest pain, fatigue, upset stomach, and sleep problems are experienced. Nightmares, restlessness, anxiety, lack of motivation, focus, irritability, anger and depression are common links. Headlines are filled with tragic stories of those with PTSD. The National Center for PTSD reports 30% of those in a war zone experience PTSD at some point; 20% of veterans returning from Iran and Afghanistan wars experience PTSD in some form. PTSD is responsible for drug/alcohol addiction, alienation from friends and family and suicide. I was privileged to meet Lt. Col. Shaye Molendyke, who has served in the military for over 20 years. She explained in detail how yoga helped her recover from war-related traumatic experiences, and gave her family support through difficult times. She told how practicing yoga helps calm troubling emotions, chronic tension, and eased suffering from emotional and physical trauma, including PTSD. Together with Lt. Col. Molendyke, we built YogaFit for Warriors, which employs safe, trauma-sensitive yoga to heal a veteranʼs body,

mind, and spirit. We learned how yoga directly affects fight-or-flight response, a reaction that prepares the body to fight or flee from a potential threat. This response is at the core of PTSD. Yoga makes a direct connection between the mind and body, helping those with PTSD retrain the bodyʼs fight-or-flight symptoms. Yoga acts as a powerful medicine teaching us how to engage the parasympathetic nervous system more effectively at will. And, that's the key: Regain emotional control over our minds and bodies and learn to recognize signals before our bodies move into fight-or-flight mode (sympathetic nervous system overdrive). This is just one way yoga is helping veterans reclaim their pre-war lives. Medical science tells us that memories of combat are not just stored in the brain but, within the body, and are kept hidden. Recent studies reveal where neuropeptides reside in the body and how they function. We have learned we can unlock these memories and release them. This groundbreaking information proves precisely why yoga is effective; yoga awakens us somatically through various poses offering much needed attention to our breathing

We are witnessing an unprecedented time in our Armed Forces whee deahs by suicide outweight deaths incurred in combat.

patterns. Once “back in our bodies” we are free to address unwanted memories and create new, healthier pathways that lead us to a better feeling-state. We must also understand that because anxiety and PTSD are held in the body, itʼs imperative that those who suffer with PTSD receive gentle instruction in how to construct their poses slowly; gently building to the maximum benefits yoga provides. Yoga instructors show students how to become masters of their bodies using a comfortable progression of poses for the body to use as building blocks to improved health. Yoga is a true and safe passage to a “healing zone”. Certainly, we donʼt have to be a veteran to experience the long-term healing of body, mind and soul through yoga. Anxiety and the stresses of everyday life affect each of us in different ways. YogaFit teaches numerous poses that can easily be practiced when you need a break: at home, work, even in an airport. These poses relieve high-stress regions, such tension in the neck or lower back. YogaFit programs are customized to promote inner calmness, amplify a state of peace, eliminate anxiety, and relieve mental exhaustion and tiredness at any level where you are experiencing difficulty. Stop by the YogaFit Studio in Los Angeles, the location of the largest Yoga Training School in the world, and experience the relaxing, destressing and revitalizing benefits yoga offers. Visit us today. Get healthy and stay in shape. Beth Shaw is the President & Founder of YogaFit® the largest yoga school in North America. She is an internationally recognized yoga expert, author, and entrepreneur with more than two dozen fitness books and DVDS sold world wide. She has developed a DVD titled, “YogaFit for Warriors,” which teaches veterans and active service members how to use yoga to overcome the negative effects of PTSD. BHT

Many times, recommended cancer treatments involve several treatment modalities such as surgery, chemotherapy, and/or radiation therapy. In human medicine, over half of patients with serious cancer undergo radiation therapy at some point during treatment. The field of veterinary radiation oncology medicine is constantly advancing. The last decade has been marked by the opening of numerous veterinary radiation therapy centers and the commissioning of more advanced radiation therapy technologies. The radiation treatment unit frequently used to deliver radiation to tumors in human medicine is called a Medical Linear Accelerators (LINAC). At VCA West LA, we are excited to announce the installation of our new state-of-the-art Varian 2100 EX Linear Accelerator that uses megavoltage highfrequency electromagnetic waves to accelerate particles for the treatment of cancer. We are fortunate to have one of the only veterinary radiation units in southern California that is also equipped with a sophisticated computer-controlled multi-leaf collimator (MLC). Our MLC is made up 120 individual leaves that create precise treatment fields around the tumor. A precisely shaped treatment field provides increased conformation around the borders of the tumor and decreases the radiation dose to the healthy tissue surrounding the tumor. With an MLC, we can significantly decrease side effects of radiation and with our new, state-of-the-art LINAC we have the ability to offer an advanced radiation treatment technique called “Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy” better known as IMRT— the standard of care for the treatment of numerous tumors in human medicine. In our veterinary patents, IMRT is very useful for treatment of tumors that are close to critical normal structures, such as nasal tumors, oral tumors, and urogenital tumors. With IMRT, the radiation treatment beam is sculpted so that the dose to the adjacent normal tissue structures is significantly minimized. A customized radiation dose created with IMRT ultimately leads to less side effects, better tumor targeting, and improved treatment outcomes. In veterinary medicine, quality of life for patients is extremely important during and after any treatment protocol. With the availability of IMRT at West LA VCA, the ability to offer a treatment with lessened side effects, but improved overall tumor control is very exciting. NOTHING Tastes As Good As SKINNY by Judy Condon

This ain’t no diet book! It’s a BIG serving of Tough Love and a THREE PART program for lasting weight loss. WHY the “This ain’t no diet book” disclaimer on the

front of my book? Because the word ʻdietʼ implies a beginning and an end; meaning when you reach your target weight you are finished and can revert to your normal eating habits, however ill-advised they might be. The toughlove message focus with my new book is an insistence that people wanting to lose weight must first get their minds in the right place. We must hold ourselves accountable and see that "it’s not my fault" is not getting it done. The alibis we have used in the past must now be seen as obstacles to overcome. Facing the truth may not be easy, but the truth can be used as motivation to succeed. What is the vital ingredient for us to understand in order to successfully reach our weight loss goals using the Judy Condon weight-loss Program? We must see that what we are doing isnʼt working. If anyone is going to be successful with a weight-loss program, it requires total truth, total responsibility and total accountability. Past excuses must be seen as obstacles to overcome. Donʼt be defensive and justify excess weight by blaming your genes, busy life, stress, slow metabolism or thyroid. You can no longer deflect or minimize your excess weight by accepting yourself as 'plus-sized' or 'full figured'. Be able to embrace the observations of others regarding your appearance. We need a little blunt language, and blunt language can be painful. Itʼs especially important that husbands and wives learn to express their real feelings about one anotherʼs bodies. By expressing their feelings truthfully, couples allow one another to see themselves as they really are. Only when you see something for what it really is are you able to change it into something better. Successful weight loss requires a lot of ʻtough loveʼ. Donʼt be afraid to use it. Nothing Tastes As Good As Skinny, is your first book in the category of dieting and weight loss. Why now? Iʼve always had an interest in diets and weight loss. I personally struggled with weight most of my life; over 50 years. As a child my dad nicknamed me “Pudge”. As a teen, I attended meetings for Overeaters Anonymous. And later, Weight Watchers. My weight went up-and-up and I became clinically obese. Finally, I was able to discover which foods I could eat and which I couldnʼt, and with proper food selection I was able to shed more than 65 pounds, and drop five dress sizes. I wrote this book because I see many people struggling with the same weight problems I struggled with, and by putting my experiences and successes into a book form, I am able to empower others with enough information to take control of their food and their lives. There was a turning point when I looked at myself and said, ‘My weight is totally out of control. I have to do something about it right now’. I saw pictures of myself which were unsettling, and my diet was giving me intestinal problems. I also had esophageal issues and such extreme gastric reflux that it burned my vocal cords, so I was taking lots of Prevacid. I thought to myself, “I can’t do this anymore.” I examined what I had

been eating and discovered that the amount of fat I ate was causing major intestinal issues and made me very sick. I furthered discovered that when I eliminate processed carbs, I no longer needed Prevacid. There are many women who currently are on the Three-Part Program and they have experienced the same thing. Most have told me that after ridding their diets of processed carbs, they no longer have gastric reflux either.

Three-Part Program Produces Weight Loss During the first part of the Program one eats only protein for seven days and reduces his/her fat consumption as much as possible. Acceptable proteins include eggs and poultry, and certain lean red meats. Non-fat dairy products high in protein are allowed. No sugar is permitted, but sugar substitutes are okay. Plenty of water, at least three 8-ounce glasses must be consumed. Nothing Tastes As Good As Skinny offers numerous helpful tips, such as what to eat if you crave sweets and others. The first phase suggests a little moderate exercise. The bodyʼs burning of protein assists in the burning of fat cells. You get weight-and sizereduction from the protein meals in part one. Expected Weight Loss In Part One From 2-to 10 pounds. The key is that there is no hunger during these seven days. Part Two Youʼve already jump started your weight loss by eating only protein during week one. Now a little variety is added to your meals. Every third day you can eat all you want of certain vegetables: lettuce, celery, green beans, peppers, onions and others. Some forbidden vegetables include carrots and corn, as these are high in sugar-and carb-content. Twentyfive minutes of daily exercise, such as walking, is recommended. During this phase of the program one can expect to lose 1-to-2 pounds per week. Part Three is named “Celebrate You”. Youʼve reached your weight goal, so your menu opens up with more choices. A weekly plan consists of two days of protein only and five days of protein and vegetables, ac-

companied by a portion of an allowed fruit (berries, apples, pineapple and others) and a portion of allowed starch (bread, rice, pasta, baked potato). You also have the freedom to experiment with food choices. The third part represents the basic template for eating you will use for the rest of your life. ONE CRITICAL RULE: If you see the scale creep up, go back to part one of the program and eat only protein until the scale drops back to your ideal weight. By the “Celebrate You” stage your energy level should be off the chart. Little aches and pains, and many of the bigger ones as well vanish, as food intake becomes healthier following this program.

Useful Tips For Improved Health • How to protect yourself from overeating at restaurants. Slow down, eat a salad prior to ordering an entrée. You may discover that the salad is enough. •

If you order an entrée. Split it with someone at your table or take it home.

Begin each meal with a big glass of water.

With, Nothing Tastes As Good As Skinny, I want people to see how the medical field and weight-loss industries have failed us. We are not getting the message, or the message must be brought in a different way. Many of us think, 'If I look like everyone else, whatʼs the problem?' Millions of us want to lose weight, but have lost our way. This new tough-love message of responsibility is very personal and is blunt at times. The intent is not to offend, but rather to use the truth to our advantage. Come along if you dare. Nothing Tastes As Good As Skinny $17.95 at www.asgoodasskinny.com. New England native Judy Condon has authored 25 books. Her most recent, Nothing Tastes as Good as Skinny, touts a new way of eating we can live with forever, and it’s a tough-love approach to healthy weight-loss management. No more excuses or denials, this book offers an honest and easy to follow approach to conquer the control food has over you. Consisting of a three-part program for lifelong weight-loss maintenance, included are helpful hints, recipes scattered throughout each chapter, and a journal at the back of the book that requires readers to be introspective and honest, knowing that no one need see the journal other than the reader. Providing for a Child with Special Needs: The Importance of Declaring Your Intentions Graham O’Kelly, CFA, Family Wealth Director The CORE Group at Morgan Stanley Beverly Hills • Education: Current plans and future goals. If your child is

While there is no single right way to create a letter of intent, it helps to start by recognizing that you could be speaking to people who may not have an opportunity to ask follow-up questions for clarification or amplification. In that light, begin your letter by setting the scene for your readers in broad strokes: Describe your vision for your childʼs life; Lay out your understanding of your childʼs talents, capabilities and interests; Highlight your guiding principles for child-rearing in general as well as for providing special-needs care and support. This can provide future caregivers valuable context for specific instructions and help set the tone for the more specific elements of your vision to follow. After you introduce your intentions, address each of these topics in detail as they relate to your childʼs needs and your expectations: • Family life, significant relationships and important contacts. Think about immediate and extended family relationships your child is exposed to today: siblings, grandparents, aunts and uncles and cousins. How do you support these relationships at present (Holiday visits? Shared vacations? Sleep-overs? Extended family dinners?); how would you like surrogates to do so in the future? Consider relationships with neighbors, friends, parents and others outside your family circle. Identify those worth maintaining. Outline practical maintenance steps for your surrogates. Consider the professionals in your childʼs life: teachers, classroom aides, tutors, therapists and clinicians. Some of these relationships may transcend boundaries and could add value to your childʼs life if they were continued.

receiving special services from a public school district, he or she is likely to be covered by an Individualized Education Program, or IEP. IEPs are usually created only after a great deal of discussion involving parents, educators and independent experts. IEPs are generally revisited yearly and revised as circumstances change. You can facilitate future IEP discussions by communicating your procedural tactics and objectives to your surrogates. (Keep in mind that a designated surrogate who was not previously involved in the IEP process may also benefit from basic background information on the specialized language and procedures involved). Your letter of intent should look beyond the IEP process by addressing how far on the educational ladder you see your child progressing. Higher education or conservatory training may be realistic aspirations. How do they fit with your vision for your child? What about technical training and commercial skills development—what roles do you think they might play? Do you have any specific schools, programs or vocational directions in mind? What about any preferences your child may express—what weight should they be given? These questions can be addressed in a letter of intent, along with suggested deployment of any discretionary financial resources. • Residence and living arrangements. The top three priorities for special needs children, like almost everyone else, are: Location! Location! Location! Your letter of intent should communicate the important parameters for the choice of location: proximity to friends and family and accessibility to resources such as schools, libraries, recreation, medical care and therapy. Also discuss your beliefs about independent living and your childʼs capability for managing his or her daily life. • Employment and occupational training plans. Many parents have strong opinions about occupational outcomes for their children. Your letter of intent is your forum for outlining your intended outcome and showing a path to achieve it. Many children develop strong opinions about their own futures and some parents use the process of drafting a letter of intent to build a consensus with their child and demonstrate their support for their childʼs choice of direction. • Management of behavior. Parents should articulate principles they follow in matters of child rearing and discipline. This discussion could include behaviors that need extra watching and include forms of direction youʼve learned to be effective or ineffective with the child. If you have explicit preferences about sanction and punishment, you could spell them out. • Management of chronic conditions. Children may have strong relationships with pediatricians, dentists, clinical specialists and therapists. Use your letter of intent to show how these relationships can be sustained in your absence. How would you want your childʼs care plans as circumstances change, and would you take account of your childʼs preferences. If relevant, outline your beliefs and preferences for the possibility of heroic

DESCRIPTOR

The “Letter of Intent” is an important part of a comprehensive estate plan for parents of a special needs child. It provides those who will carry out a parentʼs wishes with the context they need to fully apply the instructions laid out in wills, guardianship and trust documents.

BODY

What Would a Parent Do? For people guiding the care of a special needs child in the absence of the childʼs parents, this is not as much a philosophical question as it is a daily challenge: How can a surrogate caregiver make a childʼs life most like the life the parents had desired? You can help your designated surrogates perform that task by spelling out your vision in a letter of intent and giving copies of that letter to important people in your childʼs life, both those who are actively involved now and those who might be called upon in the future.

TOPICS TO COVER

and experimental medical interventions or the potential need for extraordinary life-saving measures. • Social and recreational life of the child. Some children need significant control and direction over matters involving their friendships and recreational activities. If this applies to your child, outline principles you would follow if you were in control. If you expect your child will assume greater responsibility in the future, outline how you might create a transition plan. If your child is already capable of significant self-management in any area, endorse his or her autonomy. • Religious and spiritual life of the child. Articulate preferences for your childʼs religious practices and observances. Put forth your desires for future religious education. If you give your child autonomy in this area, signal support for your childʼs preferences and expressions.

Other Considerations Other points to consider about letters of intent: • Share drafts of your letter with potential caregivers and surrogates. Assess their willingness/ability to follow directions you desire and negotiate resolutions to any differences of opinion in order to reach consensus for a course of action. • Make multiple copies of your letter with original signatures. Give copies to those with significant responsibility for areas of concern. Leave copies with your estate lawyer and anyone with fiduciary responsibility over trust or estate assets. • A letter of intent may not be a legally binding part of your estate plan, but provisions and expressions should be consistent with mandates youʼve expressed in trust, guardianship and estate documents. Some experts also suggest that your signature on the letter be formally witnessed and notarized. • Review your letter of intent periodically to ensure that its expressions address current circumstances and remain consistent with your will, trust deeds and other estate documents. • Many parents make an effort to involve their child (to the extent he or she is capable) in creating the letter of intent. Parents also extend the concept to create letters of intent covering nondisabled children as well, finding that it opens constructive channels of communication across the family. Effective plans for special needs children may require financial wherewithal to support declarations of intent. I have tools to help draw up an effective financial plan to sustain your intentions; among them, a work sheet to develop a realistic budget. Creating a meaningful letter of intent to guide the care of your special needs child is an intricate task, and you must weigh a host of competing priorities. I can help you evaluate the demands and reach a workable solution. BHT

Life, Love, Death, Betrayal & Rebirth in Beverly Hills

Suzan Hughes

the true story of why she was forced to sue HERBALIFE ... and won against the company she helped build. No emotion is stronger than a mother’s instinct to protect her child. ONE

woman. ONE child. Forced to stand up against a billion dollar global weight loss and nutritional mega-corp with an intensely desperate and greedy group of trustees out to get everything for themselves. And, their pricey herd of prominent and intimidating attorneys out for the kill. Whatʼs the chance of playing fair? At stake... • A billion dollar powerhouse of increasing wealth and a bottomless pit of retail productivity. • A fatherʼs hard-earned, brilliant legacy to his only son, his only heir to a self-made dynasty. • A chance to right the wrong of a tragic death. • An attempt to defeat a ferocious takeover of unspeakable anarchy. It was a good thing Suzan Hughes didnʼt know WHAT ELSE was in store for her when she received the horrific news on May 21, 2000, that her ex-husband Mark Hughes — at the age of 42 — had “suddenly” died. Mark, a tall, handsome and charismatic man was the father of their only child. He had put himself on the map as the undisputed KING of entrepreneurial creativity, when he introduced to the world his unique approach to product sales using an unheard of concept called the television infomercial. Mark Hughes forged a path across every continent in the world. As the Founder/Chief Executive Officer of Herbalife International, Mark owned every room he walked into and, his over-the-top personal lifestyle of wealth and lavishness kept him in the headlines and engulfed in controversy. Naturally, his sudden death had gossip mills and news lines across the world churning out a daily grind of hearsay for all to ponder. Suzan made no comment because she was being threatened to keep quiet, therefore, rumors became fact. The new dictators of Herbalife — attorney Conrad Klein, Jack Reynolds and Christopher Pair took over NOT to protect Markʼs legacy… quite the opposite. They allowed reporters and PR champions for the widow to trash the Hughes name. Incredibly, after Markʼs death, no one even bothered to write an obituary for him. It seems unthinkable, but sadly, no one stood up to protect the man and the legacy he worked so hard and long to build. Suzan stood frozen in time, barely functioning in a state of shock, and she was helpless to counteract the nightmare unfolding before her. Lie after lie made headlines, yet Suzan says nobody was on board to do an in-depth investigation into what really happened to Mark. After his death, Suzan was immediately closed out of anything that had to do with him, or the company she had worked along side of him for many

years to build. Those now in charge, told her to forget Mark ever existed. And as for his son... Suzan recounts with great anguish how they said for him to come back in 20 years. Klein, Reynolds and Pair had a plan to extinguish the existence of Mark, leaving the path wide open for them to step in and take complete control of Markʼs company, and they didnʼt want anyone standing in their way. Especially not Suzan or Markʼs son. Herbalife International was a serious player on the chessboard of corporate America, and its reach was enormous. At the time of Markʼs sudden death (2000) estimates had his business at well worth over a billion dollars, and running through a global network of more than a million distributors, in 50 countries.

“I used to read to Mark for hours when we were alone at the beach. I gave him the gift of liking to read. He would say read more, more, more. To have somebody love everything about you is an incredible feeling We loved each other like that. It seems like another lifetime. Someone said to me after Mark passed away, that he truly died a rich man because he had me and our son who truly loved him.”

Also at the time of his death, Mark had rebounded from the divorce with Suzan into a remarriage to Darcy Lapier, a pretty woman who was trying to get a career as a model/ actress off the ground. Her bid for stardom, however, wasnʼt nearly as successful as her lucrative career of marrying rich men. Scandalous, headline-making marriages and divorces to such notables as Ron Rice, Founder of Hawaiian Tropic, and actor Jean-Claude Van Damme put Darcy on radar with the reputation of being a “dangerous woman” according to reported statements by Van Damme. Very intimate accounts by Van Damme to the press detailed how a very married Darcy had followed him half way around the world, booked a room in the same hotel where he was staying, and then phoned asking him to come to her room and make love to her. The married action hero wasted no time in responding to her urgent request. The Darcy/Van Damme hookup proved to be a blessing in disguise for Rice, however, who discovered not only Darcyʼs betrayal, but via the ENQUIRER magazine, and his own attorney, it came to light that his “bride of barely a year was still legally married to her first husband, Larry Ray Robertson. Instead, of Rice having to muster up big bucks to divorce Darcy, he filed to have their marriage annulled on grounds of bigamy. Rice was overjoyed at the turn of events. He gave Darcy an SUV in exchange for fullcustody of their daughter, which sources say, was the reason he had married a pregnant Darcy in the first place. Darcyʼs affair with Van Damme proceeded along in high gear, and Van Damme divorced his wife and married Darcy. The two set out on a famously battling marriage that ended with accusations of severe drug abuse, and three divorce filings in the three years they were married. With Darcy taking barely a moment, she feasted her eyes on recently divorced and uber rich Mark Hughes, and married him in 1999. One year later he was dead. Darcy was determined not to end up with another SUV if something went wrong with the marriage, so ironically at her insistence sources say, three months before Markʼs death, she had him amend his trust to give her $10 million dollars within 45 days of his death. Sources say that number ended up closer to $55 million, less than the $65 million it was reported Darcy had asked for — but she took the cash, moved out of Hughesʼ house, and jumped on a fast plane out of town. She remarried again two years after Markʼs death, and is now a rodeo barrel racer living in Oregon. A Los Angeles coroner reported Markʼs death caused by Alcohol-Doxepin intoxication. Mark died in the master suite continued page 26

of the seven acre, 35-room, beachfront mansion he purchased for $25 million — the highest price paid for a private residence in Malibu at that time. Darcy was Markʼs fourth wife. Mark was Darcyʼs fourth husband. On that fated morning Mark Hughes was found dead, he left behind in the mansion his widow, hired help, and present was his 8-year-old son he co-parented with his ex-wife, Suzan. The young boy was sent to his bedroom when the chaos surrounding his fatherʼs fatal condition was discovered. And, there he stayed by himself until finally someone walked in and told him his father was dead. He was not allowed to call his mother, and his mother was not allowed to pick him up. Barry Burtt, a bodyguard for Mark drove the 8-year old boy the hour-long ride back to his momʼs home. Suzan recalls with great anguish and disbelief the cruel treatment her son received the day his father passed away. That was 14 years ago this month. Suzan says the woman she was then, is no where close to the woman she is today. No where close to the over-protective mother she had to become to shield her son from the nightmare that their life turned into when she made the brave decision to go up against the corporate giant Herbalife. For 12 years, Suzan fought a headline-making, brutal court battle to regain the legacy that she and Mark had built. Mark had vested 53% of controlling ownership of Herbalife to his only child, so he could one day take over as head of the company. Now, with Suzan and her son forced out of the company and thrown to the curb, they found themselves completely out of Markʼs world and on their own to suffer in their anguish. No one stopped by to see if they were alright. No one called to see if they needed help. No one asked how her son was doing. No one cared. The new executive trio who had put themselves in charge were too busy enjoying the lavish surroundings of the executive positions they had appointed themselves, says Suzan. Not only wasnʼt there a chance in hell that Markʼs intent for his son to be part of the company one day would come to fruition. Worse than that. The cold-hearted intention was to erase every memory of Mark and take away from his only child — the son he loved more than anything in the world — everything Mark owned, leaving nothing for his son to inherit.

ROLLERMAX by Suzan became a best-selling fitness accessory

A FIGHT FOR JUSTICE IN THE TRIAL OF THE CENTURY There were happy, hopeful, and then out of the blue… terribly sad moments throughout my interview with Suzan, when tears filled her eyes as she recalled the many, many happy years with Mark, and then the utter devastation, and depression she and her son endured after his death. As with any relationship, especially one that ends in divorce, there is always room for fond memories and heavyhearted regrets. Nobody goes into a marriage expecting it to end. And, even a divorce doesnʼt carry the finality of a death. For Suzan, coming to terms with the incomprehensible circumstances surrounding Mark being alive one day and deceased the next didnʼt just slam the door shut on the unfinished state of their relationship. Her greatest fear was the impact that losing his father would have on their son. As it turned out, every fear she had and, some she never envisioned came true. Itʼs impossible to say how any of us would handle such a life-altering and ongoing event in our lives. But one thing is for certain… we would have the advantage of dealing with it in private. Suzan and her son lived out their nightmare under the scrutiny of glaring headlines and harsh public opinion. Add to that the immediate and ongoing onslaught of propaganda on the part of the estate trustees to discredit Suzan whenever and however they could. She was up against a global corporation with millions of dollars at their disposal to spend making certain they got what they wanted. And besides money... what they wanted most Suzan says, was to make certain she and her son were out of the picture forever so they would have nothing standing in their way as they bled the company dry. The challenge of this epic David versus Goliath drama was to push Suzan to the breaking point emotionally and financially. Klein, Reynolds and Pair were working on the likelihood Suzan would run out of money, not be able to pay her attorneys, loose everything she had, and be forced to drop the lawsuit—penniless. The worst for Suzan was coming to terms with the reality there was zero sympathy for her son, who at such a young age had lost his father. The pain and suffering he was going through was devastating —and it was not only blatantly ignored, but stomped on as the three men pushed him out of anything that had to do with his fatherʼs life. Following Markʼs death, Suzanʼs son was never allowed to step foot in his fatherʼs house or office building again. Even though Suzan did her best to hide as much of her pain, embarrassment and financial strain from her son, Suzanʼs struggle worsened as she watched him worry for her. As Suzan recounts, the three trustees goal to ruin her almost came true. There were times she had no money to even pay the lights and water, let alone pay property taxes. She remembers all too well the dread and humiliation of hurrying to leave the courtroom after eight hours of trial, and driving to a pawn shop to sell pieces of her jewelry so she would have money for gas and food and basic living expenses. For years, there wasnʼt a dollar left over for any resemblance of a Beverly Hills lifestyle. Suzan was in survival mode to keep herself and her son moving along one day at a time. And she did an incredible job. Throughout this entire ordeal, her son excelled in school and sports, making his mother proud in every way possible. As she and I walk around her house she points out the many problems that were thrust upon her because she lack the finances to properly take care of her house. Over several years without upkeep, her house and yard became in desperate need of repair and maintenance. Damage to the inside of the house: walls, ceilings, floors, furniture, and many personal belongings were ruined because of a leaky roof she had no money to repair. Outside of the house things werenʼt much better with broken water pipes, and an unattended yard of over run trees and dying greenery. In 2007, Suzan had no choice but to mortgage her Beverly Hills home for money to live on. Throughout the months and years of this ongoing nightmare, her only thought was to do whatever it took to keep her sonʼs life as normal as possible. She shares with me in a tender and very vulnerable moment of thought how she missed the support, encouragement and understanding of having a mother and father by her side. The loving arms of parents she concludes would have gone a long way to help sooth her fears, and provide a safe haven for her and her son to seek refuge. But that was not an option. Suzan went through the nightmare alone, in a constant state of panic and fear. With each day that passed, however, she became more determined to see the trial to completion, and day-by-day she found the strength to continue. Ironically, what most of us might see as death signifying the end — for Suzan — Markʼs death was just the beginning of an all out effort to extinguish the Hughes name. His mysterious passing immediately created a feeding frenzy within the Herbalife trustee camp who were overjoyed that they would be the “rulers of an empire” with free reign to take over the enormous money-making potential for themselves. It was a greed-fest of who could get what first, and a take no prisoners attitude that left Suzan no other choice, but to go after what

Lessons Learned Although some may not know it, Suzan had her feet well planted in the world of business long before Mark Hughes and Herbalife entered her life. She is a Certified Court Reporter and had established her own agency specializing in medical malpractice before she met Mark. After they married, she continued to study in several areas, two of the most interesting to her were anatomy and physiology with a special focus on health and wellness. Even to this day, Suzan is still very much remembered for one very simple, yet very powerful phrase that she coined so many years back... “Your spirit carries you through life... but your body carries you through the day...” Suzan has always loved the outdoors, and exercise has remained a big part of her life. Going back to when she was barely a teenager, she created her own workout routines using the great fitness expert Jack LaLanne for inspiration. In 2000, she founded, Take 10 To A Better You! a fitness series that she formulated for all ages and people at every fitness level. She served as producer, writer, star and choreographer of the exercise video. Her goal: get the most out of life by keeping a positive attitude and a healthy, do-able fitness routine. Suzan says, “I learned at an early age you cannot compare yourself to others, or feel resentful that you are deprived of what they might have or be. All it does is keep you in a state of unhappiness. Health is the greatest of Godʼs gift.” Suzan holds a second degree brown belt in Karate, and is a Certified Fitness expert by the National Association of Sports Medicine. In keeping with her mantra of fitness and health, in 1999, Suzan created ROLLERMAX, a widely recognized exercise product she launched in 2007 and is found on gym floors across America (Rollermax.com). It is also endorsed by sports teams the likes of the Sacramento Kings, the Los Angeles Clippers, and numerous celebrities including David Beckham, Josh Duhamel, Janice Dickinson, and others. As the CEO of Suzan Hughes Enterprises, a company that creates top of the line health and fitness products, Suzan served as a safety and health educator and provided instruction to more than 20,000 students in the greater Los Angeles School District area. For many years of support and concern for children, Suzan was awarded the D.A.R.E. Future of America Award, and is also a recipient of the prestigious Wallis Annenberg Founders Award, from the Southern California Counseling Center. Suzan was presented with a coveted Woman of Achievement Award from the Friends of Sheba Medical Center, and she is a three-time awardwinner of the Woman of the Year Award, in Los Angeles among others. Suzan has served on several boards and pledged ardent support of bi-partisan political initiatives including hosting a fundraiser for Jean-Michel Cousteau who inspired President George W. Bush to create the single-largest act of ocean conservation in the history of the United States, designating the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands the United States' 75th national monument. Suzan is well-noted for her gracious and generous support of fundraisers for political heavy weights including Senator Maria Cantwell, Senator Barbara Boxer, and longtime friend Hillary Rodham Clinton. Not content to sit on the sidelines, she also joined other campaign leaders on the west coast such as Ron Burkle, Haim and Cheryl Saban. NEVER FORGETTING A PAINFUL CHILDHOOD To say that Suzan is generous of heart is an understatement. She says that the first thing in her mind when she and Mark married was to find a way help underprivileged children in any way she could. In 1994, Suzan came up with the idea to start the Herbalife Family Foundation,

a charity dedicated to children without stable living environments, and says that Mark immediately jumped on board to help her. Suzan furthered her commitment to the cause also in 1994, by completing a two-year ground breaking parenting class called RIE Resources for Infant Educarers. She felt she needed to disseminate to the world the newly discovered fundamentals of early childhood education in order to help the most vulnerable children from birth to age three. Hillary Clinton in her 1996 book, “It Takes A Village” sends out exactly same message. Suzan also served seven years as a Community Circle leader for children in the Beverly Hills School District teaching self-esteem, and necessary steps to expressing feelings in a non-violent way, as well as serving on Board of the Maple Counseling Center, and as an Honorary Board Member of Century City 4 Kids. Some say Suzan and Markʼs encounter at a Los Angeles restaurant was coincidental. But it was painful childhood experiences Suzan says that was common ground, and fueled their mutual desires to start the Herbalife Family Foundation which is dedicated to helping children who suffer from painful family circumstances. To date, the Herbalife Family Foundation can be found in 51 countries helping children all ages in the basic necessities of life. The program incredibly feeds approximately 120,000 kids throughout the world. The commitment to children that Suzan and Mark shared may have puzzled some, but for them it became a marked point of the love they shared for each other. Mark grew up in an emotionally disconnected home

“These people should have been mourning Mark’s passing and looking back on all he had done for them. But their concern was taking over the company, and using the money for their own self-interest. They didn’t want Mark’s son in the picture because they didn’t want me in the picture to question what they were doing. To this day, I’m still devastated by the deceit. It caught me completely off guard. I was expecting understanding and compassion for our son, but I found only the most hurtful behavior you can imagine.”

sans parental guidance, nurturing and genuine love. Although his grandparents played a role in his life, Markʼs mother, Jo Ann Hughes — as much as she loved him was too immature herself to raise a child. That truth was far different than what Mark told the world about his childhood and that his mother had died from an accidental overdose of prescription diet pills. The version that Mark told people, many say played perfectly into his Herbalife image as he moved forward with the theme that his weight-loss program was healthier than diet pills. Jack Reynolds, a plumbing contractor and Markʼs alleged father was a sketchy figure who sources say saw his son twice throughout his entire childhood, and he denied paternity both times. When Suzan and Mark decided to get married, it was Suzan who with good intention in her heart brought the two men back together — a decision she would later regret when after Markʼs death and during the many trials she would endure, a hateful and coniving Reynolds without remorse turned against both her and her son, choosing to delete them from the Herbalife company. Reynolds also according to court papers, went on to mismanage millions of dollars from the company his “son” and Suzan spent years building together. Shockingly, Suzan says Reynolds who was suspended, and then removed as a trustee by a trial judge, ironically is still parading around as the President of the Mark Hughes Foundation, giving Hughes money to charity to keep up appearances and buy credibility. Suzan says his position is still in place only because the court had no jurisdiction to take it away, however, the jury is still out on its validity. Suzan spent her early life in an orphanage. Later, she went into a foster care home where her mother would visit and always wanted to take her daughter back home. Although the foster home offered a more family-type environment, Suzan longed for her real parents, and ended up returning to her family. But she found herself in an abusive, dysfunctional, unstable environment. Seeing her birth parents for who they really were, rather than who she fantasized them to be, gave Suzan a vested interest in renewing the reality of her past and future. She came to understand that just because a parent is biologically connected to a child doesnʼt mean that they are in essence a true parent. Later in life, she realized the ways in which her foster mother had served as a role model, teaching her many good things that she carries with her today. Suzan said that she recently discovered that her now 90-year-old foster mother had been a strong presence in the civil rights movement back in her day. Suzan quips with a smile that maybe she had vicariously inherited her foster motherʼs will and determination to overcome adversity. But the biggest lesson Suzan says she took from her youth was the importance of parental love and guidance that a child needs growing up. Looking to her own son, Suzan says that regardless of what she was going through at any given time, and especially during the long years of the trials, her priority always remained with him. She made certain she was, and still is, there for him every step of his way. Tearfully she says that Mark would be so proud to see what a wonderful son and loving, smart and caring young man he has grown into. Regardless of the many years that have passed, it is clear that Suzan has not fully accepted the finality of Markʼs death. And to be honest, how could she? Although the pain has slowly dissipated, the day-to-day of her life is still tied to the heartbreak of Markʼs passing, and the questionable circumstances surrounding it. But there is light at the end of this tunnel as the lawsuit settlement closure is at hand.

THE FACE THAT LAUNCHED A $400 MILLION DOLLAR SKIN CARE LINE: DERMAJETICS by HERBALIFE LIFE, LOVE, DEATH, BETRAYAL ST: Herbalife was Mark Hughes and Mark Hughes was Herbalife. To this day you can’t think of one without the other. His name was iconic with the brand. Why wouldn’t the Herbalife trustees in place at the time want to keep his only son in the picture? It would seem they could achieve more bang for their buck from the father and son tie-in? SH: Mark was a very generous husband, father, relative, friend and boss. Even though his childhood had not been a happy one, he hired his two brothers to work with him at Herbalife so they would have a way to make a good living. He hired friends and people that he thought had his back and would work along side of him to make the great vision he had for Herbalife better and better. Mark trusted people that he shouldnʼt have—we both did. They turned out not to be the honorable people we envisioned. Court documentation shows the lies, treachery and viciousness that not only went on toward my son and myself after Mark died, but behind Markʼs back while he was alive. These people should have been mourning Markʼs passing and looking back on all he had done for them. But their concern was taking over the company, and using the money for their own self-interest. Their betrayal of Mark Hughesʼ Will, Trust and intent was to such magnitude, that even judges were left with their mouths agape. Mostly every lawyer even to this day tells me, “Weʼve never seen anything like this in our 20-30 years of practicing law.” They didnʼt want Markʼs son in the picture because they didnʼt want me in the picture to question what they were doing. To this day, Iʼm still devastated and confused by the deceit. It caught me completely off guard. I was expecting understanding and compassion for our son, but I found only the most hurtful behavior you can imagine. I knew these people. They came to our home when Mark and I were married. They had worked along side of us. They were like family to us. I will never understand the treachery

only to say that greed turns a person into an unscrupulous, hateful, and vengeful human being willing to do anything for money. And, they did. They wanted complete control over Herbalife with no one questioning what they were doing, or where millions of dollars was going. Only my son and I as guardian stood in their way. ST: You and Mark were divorced barely two years when he married Darcy LaPier. Looking back, did you see the train wreck coming? Any regrets? SH: I spent many years working along side of Mark to build Herbalife and we worked as a team to build our fam-

ily and make our lives comfortable. His life was not easy, but I knew him very well, and when I saw him struggling, I always found ways to resolve his problems. He was conflicted in certain areas because of his disruptive childhood. Mark carried in his heart many unresolved feelings about his family, and he avoided talking about them. I believe that it was those feelings that fueled his insecurities about never being satisfied with his life… he was always wanting more and bigger and better. It wasnʼt as much him wanting to prove his worth to the world, as I believe it was him wanting to prove his worth to himself. Mark didnʼt enjoy what was at hand. That was the downside of his brilliant entrepreneurial spirit. He was always thinking about what he could do next. That created great anxiety and unrest for him. When I saw him in these moods, I would talk with him. When we had a problem at Herbalife, I would sit and strategize with him however long it took to find a solution, and I always helped him regain his footing. After our divorce, he was on his own, surrounded by self-serving people and he no longer had that zone. I felt it. He felt it. We spoke about it. He missed having a person beside him who was looking after his best interests, not their own. I watched his health and made sure he took care of himself. He had been in a marriage with someone who wasnʼt conscious of his vulnerabilities. The last year of his life, Mark struggled with the reality of what his life had become. Do I have regrets? We all have regrets over things that happen in life. He told me his regret was taking too many things for granted in our marriage until I gave up. I have a saddened feeling that if I had still been married to him, there to guide and help him, catch him when he fell like Iʻd always done when we were together—that maybe he would still be alive today. That my son would have had the opportunity to grow up with a father who loved, adored, protected him and guided him to adulthood. continued page 30

A MOTHER’S PAIN... A CHILD’S DEVASTATION... Iʼve known Suzan since the late 90s. We met at an event in Beverly Hills (where else?) and hit it off like wild fire. In a city like LA where you never really know who you are talking to because people pretend to be someone they arenʼt — she was like a shining star. She was very funny. Later I found out she studied to be a comedian and did standup at various clubs around Los Angeles, even taking her fabulous act in 1999 to Harrahʼs in Las Vegas. At the same time, Suzan was a bright, a serious-minded business woman. I loved that she was instantly honest about who she was and how she felt. She spoke often about her son, and it was obvious that he was the light of her life. She and I kept in touch, and weeks later she had a Easter egg hunt party for her friends and their kids. When I arrived at her exquisite Beverly Hills home (ironically down the street from mine) the first thing I saw when I walked in the front door were numerous photos of her and her son beautifully displayed in ornate frames on an exquisite entrance table. She and Mark were divorced, he was remarried to Darcy, and yet she kept his presence still very much alive in her home for her son. There among the photos was a large portrait of Mark. My first thought was what an incredibly heartfelt way to make certain her son saw his father each day. Such a gesture told just how much Mark meant to her even after their divorce. It was something I never forgot, especially in a city like LA where divorce can easily breed hatred of an ex-spouse. It was a window to her heart of how much she deeply cherished family ties. And the photos... well they are still in exactly the same place they were those many years ago. Knowing this, imagine how utterly shocked I was the day I went to her home to chat for our interview. She showed me a piece of Xerox paper half filled with her own hand written notes. There were about 12 items listed; things that her son was attached to and wanted from his fatherʼs Malibu home after he had died. The list read like what a little boy would describe to his mother: clothes he had left there, a few simple things of his fatherʼs he wanted to remember him by. As I read the list it was difficult not to become emotional: a dresser in his bedroom that held his clothes, a sweater of Markʼs, toys... none were expensive items, but each was a cherished item for the little boy. Suzan also jotted down a few items she felt her son would want one day for his own home; keepsakes she and Mark bought together when they were married. Included was a small, but beautiful chandelier they found while antique hunting, some bookends, a favorite chair of Markʼs. Suzanʼs home is stunning, and if the three trustees who for years had fought her tooth and nail thought for a second she was asking for any of these items for herself — they couldnʼt have been more wrong. Sadly, years passed, without any word on the items she had requested in her lawsuit, then suddenly out of the blue, a small box arrived. By then, Suzan says, Markʼs homes had been sold, and the contents pillaged by the trustees, stolen or sold at auctions. Suzan said when she opened the small box, she was in a complete state of shock. There before her was what the trustees were willing to give her son to remember his father by —the entirety of what they believed he deserved from his fatherʼs estate. The contents were a slap in the face to Suzan and her son. NOTHING on the list had been returned. When Suzan showed me the contents of the box, I was speechless. There was a cigar cutter, two after dinner brandy glasses and a few other items that could be used on a bar

or for parties and entertaining. Suzan looked at me and said, “This is what the trustees for the estate gave my son to remember his father by.”

A FATHER’S BILLION DOLLAR LEGACY TO HIS ONLY CHILD

what went wrong?

ST: There is no chance Mark wouldn’t have wanted his only child to one day stand as the head of his company. Or, to have personal items from his life, his home; maybe a watch, a lamp, a jacket, cufflinks, ANYTHING personal to remember him by. After all his work... your work... together to build Herbalife to where it is now I can only believe that Mark would have wanted his son to live a life financially equal to his own, and one day inherit all he had accomplished —stand as frontman for the company. Why all the hatred?

next to him at Herbalife, and they would work together. Mark never wanted our son to want for anything. He made certain that he had the best of everything… education, clothes, toys, a home… all the things he never had when he was growing up — all those things he wanted our son to have. Mark loved our child more than anything. He would never have imagined in a million years that those he trusted would after his death, treat his son like dirt. It was devastating to live through day after day. It broke my heart and spirit to watch the hatred of their ugliness continue and survive through the many illegal things they did. When Suzan met Mark one evening in a trendy LA, restaurant he was living the life of a golden boy multi-millionaire. His “home” was the prestigious Liongate estate, in Bel Air and everything looked just peachy — from the outside. But as their relationship progressed, Suzan discovered not all that appears grand in Beverly Hills is... GRAND! The truth of Markʼs life was far different. In reality Mark was living a tough, stressful and tortured life watching the company he started be pushed to the verge of collapse as Herbalife came under an ever-increasing eye of FDA scrutiny. Mark was in the fight of his life to keep his company up and running, and the odds were not in his favor. FDA claims were Herbalife products were bogus, and company promotion was intentionally false. Mark Hughes looked like he was down for the count. Or, was he?

IF THINGS LOOK TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE...

they are.

SH: Markʼs intention was always to take care of those he loved when he was alive, and certainly when he died. Unfortunately, those he left in charge, and those who decided to put themselves in charge — Klein, Reynolds and Pair had their own agendas of what they planned to do with his company, and his money. Clearly Mark would have wanted our son to have what was his, and be included in the company we built together. Instead, the so-called “trustees” made every attempt to obliterate any connection between Mark and his son, and take for themselves everything they could. Mark was very specific in his trust that our son benefit from the company he created; that our son inherit the fruits of his labor; that our son live a life financially equal to the life he lived when he was alive. What kind of people do this to a child? And more to the point... what kind of mother could stand by and let it be done to her child? There was no way I was not going to fight for my son to reclaim what was rightfully his. Mark had always dreamed that one day our son would stand

ST: Although you were coming from New York, Beverly Hills is after all — BEVERLY HILLS. Then, one night you meet the iconic Mark Hughes. What were your impressions of this west coast lifestyle and Mr. Hughes? SH: I didnʼt have any idea that I would live in Beverly Hills, let alone meet Mark. It wasnʼt in my thinking because of the way I was raised. I was hoping to make my court reporting business a success and be able to financially support myself. Thatʼs it. I never thought about being rich. But, after Mark and I met, we discovered we had more in common than anyone would have thought. Our childhoods, growing up without the parental guidance of a mother and father was a strong bond between us. Also, our desire to make something of ourselves. Mark had an immediate infatuation for me that lasted a good seven years. We dated for two years before we married, then waited another five years before we had a child. I didnʼt have any idea how much he loved being with me, talking, laughing and being together. We were truly in love with each other. He told me he never had a relationship with a woman in his life like the one we shared. Growing up, I had never had a parent… a mother who told me I was pretty, or how to wear my hair, or how to dress. I had this face, this body, this hair and nobody to guide me; nobody to protect me, or to love me. I had always been on my own and struggled to get ahead, just like Mark had done. I think that is what Mark loved about me so much. I put myself out into the world to learn new things, and that didnʼt stop when I became a court reporter. I studied comedy and performed on stage live at several comedy venues. I loved comedy and became very good at it. I was just being myself when I met Mark. I was genuine and funny and, I found ways to accommodate myself to make things OK no matter where I lived.

ST: When did it hit you that not all was going well at Mark’s company? SH: I knew he was in trouble. When we got married he was $12 million in the red every month. He was devastated. We moved from the Liongate mansion into a dilapidated home on Benedict Canyon. It was awful. One time Mark was knocking on the door and his hand went through the rotten wood. (laughs). Another time he was in his upstairs office on an important call and the dogʼs paw went through the ceiling. He was so embarrassed that we had to live in such a rundown house, but I made it into a fun situation. I fixed it up myself, and made it a comfortable home for us. We were together and that was all that mattered. We each brought something special to the table, and we worked like a team to make our family and business work. Mark always told me he couldnʼt believe his luck in finding me.

HERBALIFE GOES UP AGAINST

the fda.

ST: Why do you think the FDA was pressuring Herbalife with regards to the ingestibles?” SH: Mark built a company on the premise of people taking back control of their health. Imagine the bite a billion dollar company was taking out of drug company revenue? People felt better, and no longer needed prescription drugs. They were improving their health and healing their bodies using vitamins and nutritional supplements from Herbalife. Itʼs sad to say, but the government rallies for drug companies. Nobody wants people to be healthy because sickness is a multi-billion dollar business that makes doctors, drug companies and the government rich. The mind set with regard to Mark and Herbalife was… who is this kid making millions from selling nutritional supplements? STOP HIM! And, they did. Then, Mark met me and I rolled up my sleeves and worked along side him to overcome the giant wall put in front of us by the FDA. My mentality was... if you can just get the train started, Iʼll shovel the coal, Iʼll chop the wood, Iʼll do whatever job I have to do to keep it moving along. (tears in her eyes). Mark didnʼt have any example to follow growing up. He didnʼt receive good parental guiding, he had dropped out of school in the ninth grade and went out into the world to find his place. There were elements in business he struggled to learn and accommodate, but whatever he lacked in the way of detailed business strategy, he made up for being brilliant and able to come up with an idea and make it work. This thing with the FDA was devastating him. He was operating on fear as Herbalife stock dropped with all the bad press. Then, I came up with a plan. Nothing is more appealing to me than a woman with a plan, and Suzanʼs was a duzzy. She suggested that Mark take Herbalife public, and produce a line of skin care and haircare products — which they did to the tune of a $400 million dollar subsidiary company. Later, they added cologne to the lineup. Sales rock-

eted off the charts greatly increasing Herbalifeʼs revenue. The FDA found other things to do and, Herbalife was off and running. Mark Hughes was on his way to getting out of the red and permanently into the black. ST: Please tell me how a Court Reporter and health and fitness expert, not to mention incredibly talented comedian, actress and model — yes Suzan has appeared in nine motion picture, 12, television shows/series and three stage productions — came up with a plan that ultimately saved Herbalife? SH: I thought to myself: DERMA for skin and JETICS for heat — DERMAJETICS. It was something I knew the FDA would not bother with and it would take Herbalife away — at least for the time being from the ingestible controversy. I became the face of the DERMAJETICS skincare line, and focused on making it the best skincare products we could produce. Mark was thrilled and proud of what I had done. Herbalife already had cutting-edge technology in place that upheld our vision, and we had customer support from millions of people worldwide. Since Markʼs death, Herbalife has become one of the largest distributors of herbal products in the world. Global sales according to company reports fall in the $6+billion range, and sell in 91 countries. With her legal woes against the old crew at Herbalife fading, Suzanʼs daily planner is more to her liking. Her charity work continues as does the Herbalife Family Foundation she co-founded and supports. The Foundation improves the lives of children around the world by supporting wellknown charities that provide nutrition to more than 51 countries. Suzanʼs work load may not be less, but its direction has changed considerably. From court appearances to causes close to her heart: helping children and teens in crisis. “Every child and teenager needs love and guidance. Many achieve their potential in life because of the parental support they receive. Others are not as fortunate. One hundred million children around the world live in the streets and are homeless. Others grow up with a mother or father who lacks good parenting skills. I can identify with the lonely life that not having parents who care brings to ones life,” said Suzan. “Because of my own hardship upbringing, once I had financial means behind me and, with Mark at my side having experienced the same conditions, I knew I wanted to make a difference somehow and I wanted to start by helping children. There is nothing as important in a childʼs life as good parental guidance.” And as for me and Miss Hughes. I remain an ardent fan. I always tell people the story of the day I talked her into going hiking with me in Franklin Canyon Park. I had the big idea to take us off the beaten path, and she and I ended climbing up hills, rolling through weeds up to our butts, and sliding down dried up ravines grasping onto any dead branch we found so we wouldnʼt fall. When we emerged from our “hike” she looked at me with scratches on her legs, and weeds in that golden blonde hair of hers, and she said, “Great Hike.” No guts... no glory... Gotta love this woman! BHT

“In 1997, we reached the one billion mark with Herbalife. I felt we achieved everything we ever dreamed of and more. Mark had a successful business, a big beautiful home, a yacht, and yet he purchased a 157 acre property to build a 50,000 sq.ft. mansion. We were moving into a hotel, not a home. I hated it. I enjoyed doing things around the house myself, now we would be surrounded with help. Mark didn’t care, bigger was never enough. He also bought the property next door for a guest house, and wanted me to work with decorators, contractors, gardeners to create his dream compound. It was what he wanted, not me. We traveled — he was in meetings and I was right beside him representing the Herbalife Family Foundation. An entourage followed us everywhere. He spent free time antique hunting for the house. I wanted family time. I couldn’t understand why he was never happy with what we had. He did training conferences; I was deep in flooring and marble countertops. Even while we were meeting with architects I was saying to myself, NO, NO, NO I don’t want to do this again. I had rebuilt two prior homes we had lived in. As with many men when they reach a certain level of success, their focus changes. Building an enviable lifestyle became more interesting than us. When we split up, I asked for two percent of the company-$10 million and left him 98 percent of the marital assets. It was easier for him to be with someone who didn’t want anything from him but material things. Much easier than being in love and dealing with me on an emotional level.”

might have heard about the Chinese proverb that says, “When planning for a year, plant corn. When planning for a decade, plant trees. When planning for life, train and educate people.” And part of that training should be developing a backup plan. You may have made the best-laid plans, but what if something unexpected happens? I canʼt emphasize enough how important backup plans are. You should always have a plan B and possibly a plan C and D. The bigger the deal or event, the more detailed your backup plan should be. As I was building my envelope manufacturing company, whenever we had a big event I would always ask everyone on my team, “What can go wrong?” And just as important, “What is our backup plan?” Planning is time consuming and letʼs face it, many people donʼt like to do it. But when you think about it, in business you donʼt put all your eggs in one basket. That would be regarded as rash or unprofessional. Thatʼs why you need a plan and, equally important, a backup plan. Iʼm a big believer in being prepared. How many special events, meetings, weddings or businesses have been ruined because people didnʼt have backup plans? We live in an imperfect world. If we donʼt plan for something to go wrong, something inevitably will. Maybe itʼs an out-of town speaker who canʼt make it to your event due to bad weather, traffic, or plane or car trouble. Or your audio visuals go down, or there are transportation issues. There are a myriad of things that can go haywire. I recently attended a charity event in a rural area. Ten minutes into the party, the lights went out. All the electricity was off. Bye bye catering. That also meant the plumbing was inoperational, because it ran on an electric pump. This was an evening event, so sunlight was not an option. Guests stumbled in the dark to their cars, leaving all the silent auction items still artfully arranged on the tables. The night was a total bust. The rescheduled event six weeks

later – at an area hotel – drew fewer than half the original guest list. And raised half the anticipated funds. People donʼt plan to fail; they fail to plan. Did anyone give any thought to an emergency generator? When Iʼm asked about important skills for leaders, itʼs hard to beat a hungry fighter, but there are a lot of other traits that I look for, like planning skills. Even if what youʼre planning seems like a sure thing, itʼs always good to consider the worst-case scenario. For example, in the early 1950s, Hewlett Packard Company founders Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard needed an additional manufacturing plant to keep up with the companyʼs growth. However, they approached the venture with caution. They chose a general design that, in the event of a company failure or hard times, could easily double as a supermarket space they could lease. Planning, and backup planning, saves precious time because you are prepared to act if any unforeseen circumstances arise. Rather than switching into panic mode, you can react with confidence. When I am preparing to give a speech, I have some specific requirements, including a second microphone, spare batteries and a technician in the room. I carry a ruler and tape

so I can enlarge the lip on the lectern so my papers donʼt scatter all over the floor. I tape over the door latches so the noise doesnʼt distract the audience if someone comes in late. When you have worked hard to deliver a quality product, it hardly makes sense to ignore the details. Plan ahead to prevent disasters. Do you back up your computer files? Have you ever been working on your computer for an hour or two on an important document, when suddenly a power surge wipes out your masterpiece? You will quickly learn to back up frequently. Your career is no place to wing it. You need a career plan, and you need to review that plan on a regular basis. From getting an education to developing skills to finding the first job, knowing what path you want to take requires forethought. Assessing your career progress is part of your plan. If you decide to quit your job, youʼd better have a backup plan. Or you can plan to be right back where you started. BHT Mackay’s Moral: A plan isn’t a plan until you have a backup plan.

YOUR CREDIT... YOUR FUTURE... By Ela Kitchen, Founder/CEO AxSys Financial Group

Legally remove bankruptcy, short sales, and foreclosures. Fact or Fiction? CREDIT is as unique and

personal as a finger print. Itʼs comprised of your payment history including installment loans, revolving credit, debt ratios and any debt inquiries. Lenders feel too many inquires indicate you may be living beyond your means. The best credit mix: No more than two mortgages, two installment loans, three credit cards (Visa, (MasterCard, American Express); two charge cards (Bloomingdales, Neimans, Nordstromʼs); Keep debt ratios below 40%.

90-Day Plan To Improve Your Credit Score 1. Credit Analysis: $1 for the first week. www.creditchecktotal.com

2. Action Plan: Individualized credit restoration specific for you.

3. Remove Derogatory items: This is a 90-day process.

4. Add Trade-lines Could be necessary to your improve credit profile.

5. Clean Credit: Upon completion consumer credit is prepared for lenders and future investments. Can bankruptcy truly be removed from a credit report before the seven year mark? Yes! In January 2001 the Supreme Court rule itʼs not illegal not to report a persons negative credit, saying revolving credit does not remain on a consumerʼs credit report longer than seven years; a bankruptcy not longer than 10 years. Vital is the verbiage used. “Not Longer Than” does not mandate that negative items be reported for a specific time and CAN be deleted by consumers.

3 Types Of Bankruptcy

Chapter 7: A personal bankruptcy which discharges unsecured debt. Chapter 11: A business bankruptcy. Chapter 13: A reorganization that may included secured property such as a second mortgage without equity. Los Angeles area residents see the effect of foreclosure on the economy. Can some one with past foreclosures return confidently to the buying market? Since the mortgage crisis of 2008 weʼve removed foreclosures from thousands of consumers credit reports, who then get loans from banks/mortgage companies bringing them back to the buying market.

Some say bureaus misreport short sales as foreclosures. Can these two mortgage defaults be reported differently? To gain leverage against a mortgage company and be approved to short sell a home people are illadvised to default on payments. If a person misses 3 payments; itʼs 90-days-late; lenders can file a notice of default at the County Recorders Office to get foreclosure underway. Credit bureaus report the short sell as an M-9. How is Axsys Group unique from other credit repair companies? Most companies canʼt or wonʼt remove short sales, foreclosures/bankruptcies from consumer credit reports. We specialize in what I call... “the heavy lifting”. How does the process work? Since 2013, 31 new Federal Laws have been enacted to protect consumers rights. The law says your credit report must be 100% accurate; 100% verifiable and reported in a timely manor. We question the legality of the credit reporting enabling our credit coaches to block negligent reporting at the foundation level. We first review clients credit reports; and recommend www.creditchecktotal.com to ascertain if reporting is accurate. We prepare an Action Plan specific to your situation outlining necessary steps, time frame and cost to accomplish your credit goals. What’s the #1 advice you give consumers? Early detection of credit report issues can limit damage to your credit rating. Check your report frequently. There are many credit scoring models: mortgage credit reports, auto-enhanced, insurance credit reports; consumer credit reports. Each model is different and focuses on a different industry. 7 Keys To Executing A Successful Business Rebrand Miller Ingenuity CEO Steve Blue

NO matter your reason for embarking upon

a business rebranding — company/product name, logo, phrase, design scheme... one thing is certain: executed poorly you suffer extreme consequences. There is no rebranding effort where the stakes are not extraordinarily high and margin for error slim at best. History has shown us numerous rebrand debacles that didnʼt heed fundamental principles. These 7 KEYS will guide you to effectively execute a rebrand initiative. Key #1: Be clear on what a brand is; itʼs not just your logo. Itʼs the sum total of the messages, interactions, and experiences a customer has with your product, services, and staff. A brand is the promise of an experience to a customer, and their experience of that promise delivered. Itʼs a valuable asset to nurture over time. Key #2: Maintain control of the rebranding process. Use a third party guide because itʼs easy for a re-naming effort to deteriorate into likes/dislikes of friends and family. Ground your brand in a strategy that recognizes the brandʼs origins, and destination in future marketplace. Keep an open mind. Small ideas can get bigger and big ideas can diminish. Identify equities that wonʼt change. Key #3: A brand has two owners: marketer 50%; customer 100%; a 150% in total. The marketer produces messages, products and services. Customers experiences the brand and control messages they receive. Check in with customers and include internal players with customer contact. The worst thing you can do is decide branding issues at the top level and dictate it to customers, and your troops who must deliver the brand experience. You risk a loss of relevancy and buy-in. Key #4: Logo, tagline, typography and design should tell a single-minded story. Every brand is heroic in some way. Its look, feel, and message should tell one story. What does your brand fight for or against? Whatʼs at stake for customers in terms of their problems? How can you solve them? By being your customers hero, you make heroes out of them. Thatʼs truly adding value. Key #5: A brand should remain fluid. Some warn that changing your brand is a major risk. If it fails, it can be expensive and disruptive. Note Coca Colaʼs experience with “New Coke.” If you do not violate a brandʼs established equities and values, you can add flexibility

into a brand so it wonʼt lose relevance. Tide Detergent is built on consumerʼs trust that it gets clothes clean, yet the brand has used multiple expressions of that proposition over the years, adding benefits to fend off competitors. Create a brand positioning broad enough to be as relevant today as yesterday and flexible to be relevant in the future. Key #6: Never stop supporting/promoting your brand. Successful brands are a living presence in the marketplace with a tangible relationship with customers. Studies show that brands consistently supported during a down cycle gain greater sales and share when the economy turns up, over those who cut support activities. Key #7: Be a Brand Champion. After crafting or refreshing your brand, appoint a key leader, typically in Marketing, to be a Brand Champion using brand guidelines and procedures to make sure the identity you created presents a consistent image and message in marketing communications from business cards to digital media, sales presentations, signage, events, trade shows—wherever customers will engage with your brand. Executing a rebrand must be extraordinarily strategic, not violate the company’s cultural roots, be relevant, consistently supported, and place the customer benefit front and center always. It’s all about them.

With over three decades of management, executive, consulting and speaking experience in markets world wide, Miller Ingenuity CEO Steve Blue is a globally regarded business growth authority who has transformed companies into industry giants and enthralled audiences with his dynamic keynotes. His upcoming book, “Outdo, Outsmart… Outlast: A Practical Guide to Managed, Measured and Meaningful Growth,” reveals why seeking growth and surviving growth are equally perilous, and require different sets of plans to weather the storms. CARROT BLOODY MARIA • Fresh Carrot Juice • Bloody Mary Mix • 2 Ounces Numi Carrot Curry Savory Tea-infused with tequila • Worcestershire Sauce • Tabasco Sauce • Lime • Fresh Veggies For Garnish • Black Pepper In a tall glass with ice, add tequila then fill the rest of the glass with half bloody mary mix and half carrot juice. Then add a few splashes of Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco sauce and the juice of half a lime. Mix with a spoon, sprinkle a little black pepper on the top; garnish with celery and fresh veggies. *** To infuse liquor with tea, fill a glass container with liquor in the amount you will need for your recipe. One tea bag is plenty for up to 8 ounces of liquor. Seal the container with an airtight lid—mason jars work great for this and store it in a dark area. Allow it to infuse for 48-72 hours before removing the tea bag. Rose Pomegranate Martini Made by infusing vodka with White Rose Tea from Numi Organic Tea.

COLORS REMEMBERED:

An Exhibition Celebrating the Perspective of Three Iranian Women Artists TARA Gallery is proud to feature Mehri Dadgar, Shahla

Etedali, and Marjan Nirou Saniee — three phenomenally talented female Iranian artists whose unique ability to capture the fine line between memory and imagination has made for a truly enchanting collection not to be missed. The womenʼs unique stories are told in bold colors with patterns that resonate a common and enigmatic beauty. Whether it is simplifying objects to their bare minimum, or blending western and middle-eastern influences, each piece is a stunning visual memoir of the artistsʼ lives from Iran to the present: beautiful in its simplicity, yet quixotic and surreal. Former political prisoner in Iran, Mehri Dadgar employs arabesque, calligraphy, and traditional miniature paintings with a blend of Western influence to create modern abstractions. “To a great extent, I have come to realize that all my art even the darkest works I have done are celebrations of life,” says Dadgar. “They invariably reflect my sense of wonder at the beauty of creation.” Artist, writer, documentary filmmaker, Shahla Etedali has a way with words. Her love for the pliability of language, particularly her native Persian, has inspired her to create a unique and universal dialect on canvas. Often working

Marjan Nirou Saniee with calligraphy, Etedaliʼs pieces are truly a wistful and poetic indulgence. Marjan Nirou Saniee renders a new perspective to our colloquial surroundings by creating texture through carving and lifting of layers of plywood. The result signifies ancient archaeological treasures come to life in the most modern form. Vessels and fruits are no longer inanimate objects but a vehicle to ignite memory and nostalgia. IF you want authentic Mexican food and very cozy service, then El Coyote is the place

for you: Mexican décor, Christmas lights, sexy tiny booths, a cute patio and the smell of guacamole and nachos in the air. Waitresses are dressed in traditional colorful Mexican dresses and always smiling and attentive. We started with the Breaded Jalapenos— stuffed with cheddar and cream cheese, a quivering bundle of cheese, eagerly awaiting our probing lips, Guacamole Fresca—light and tasty, Mexican Caesar Salad — crispy romaine lettuce, parmesan cheese, croutons and El Coyoteʼs house-made zesty Ceasar dressing. Our entrees were the Fish Tacos lightly breaded grilled Basa (a mild, white fish) served on corn tortillas with fresh cabbage and El Coyoteʼs delicious light Mexican cream sauce with rice and beans was delectable, and the Shrimp Burritos—rice, beans, red or green sauce and jack cheese, was long and juicy. El Coyote is a delightfully traditional restaurant with a homey ambiance, flavorful food and superb service. BHT

DRAGO CENTRO LOCATED in downtown LA, between the beautiful skyscrapers, Drago Centro

awaited us with its elegant old school Italian dining, dimmed lighting and beautiful wine cellar welcoming you inside. We were greeted, and seated, by a lovely hostess and the waiter ever so gallantly switched our white table napkins to black to match our dresses. Many business women, bankers and lawyerʼs where munching away while we enjoyed the view…of the men of course ;)) The manger started us with an aperitif of Prosecco which while swallowing, sent tingles of joy down our throats. For appetizers we began our feast with La Burrata—burrata, balsamic, sun dried tomato, basil pesto, crostini (four balls of smooth cheese) the display was a work of art! IL Polipo—octopus, fingerling potatoes, green beans, peppers, olive oil pearls, were mouth watering, L’Insalata di Barbabietole— baby beets, pistachio purèe, crispy shallots, gorgonzola. For our main courses we ordered the Le Fettuccine— crab fettuccine, Gli Spaghetti Con Il tomatoes, Pesto Alla Trapanese basil, chile, and lemon; super lush and the Gli Spaghetti Con il Pesto Aalla Trapanese— basil spaghetti, Sicilian almond-tomato and basil pesto was so good it was beddable! Dessert was magnifique! The Bombolini Doughnuts—lemon cream, apricot jam, honey gelato were waiting provocatively for us to beastly devour and the I Biscott—nutella and brown sugar sandwich cookies, perfect for kids. Drago Centro is a high end yet cozy, old school Italian dining experience. Great for dates, business meetings and family occasions. BHT

BESO

OH LA LA! Beso you are sexy and you know it!! Owned by the beautiful Eva Longoria, the restaurant has dimmed lighting, glamorous chandeliers and seductive booths faced forward which means everyone gets a view of everyone. Great place to see and be seen. Tres swag! Our darling waiter intoxicated us with attractive cocktails called The Very Berry – pisco porton, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries and lime... it was divine! He placed a basket with FlatBread on our table—so tasty and pleasurable that we could not stop eating it. So, if you are on a diet, then darlings itʼs totally over! For our appetizers we ordered Eva’s Avocado Guacamole- pico de gallo, crispy tortilla chips – super fresh, Caesar Salad- creamy caper dressing, romaine, croutons, parmesan, and The Beso Chopped, mixed greens, olives, prosciutto, parmesan cheese, herb red wine vinaigrette. Our small plates consisted of Lobster Quesadilla-avocado puree, creme fraiche which was tres scrumptious and Margarita Flatbreadmanchego and mozzarella cheese with LOTS of cinnamon. Waiting for our entrees we moved our heads to sexy music the DJ was rocking while checking out the scene. Located in the heart of Hollywood, Beso attracts a TinselTown crowd of girls in super short tight dresses (we love those dresses and make them Herve Leger if you can; ) — sugardaddies, celebrities and tourists getting a bite before a show at the Pantages Theater which is across the street. Good looking, single men and women sitting at the big bar at the front of the restaurant make it a perfect see and be seen place to be! Ah! Our entrees arrived smelling wonderful. The WoodSmoked Salmon – with a sweet smoke flavor and the 8oz Petite Filet- was delectable. Now, the best part of dinner —DESSERTS! We devoured the Fried Banana Splitcinnamon Ibarra chip ice cream, hot fudge, salted caramel, pepita brittle; Mexican Cheesecake-pistachio cookie crust, and blackberry sauce–mouthwatering! Beso is a total scene with a very diverse clientele, perfect for picking a potential girl friend/boyfriend or celebrating a special occasion. Relax, drink, eat and play. BHT

GRILL on the Alley... you are très elegant, take us now!

Sexy mature men with fashionable black geek chic glasses as ours, studio heads, agents, celebrities, millionaires, billionaires and simple, neat décor is what you get at the Grill on the Alley. The restaurant is extremely large with tables and booths — we chose to sit at a table. Our ultra professional server started us off with the Garlic Cheese Bread (the yummiest ever!!); then we lavished over a Caesar Salad— crispy and cheesy, Vine Ripened Tomatoes and Sweet Onions, and The Grill Cobb Salad—light and appetizing. For our entrees we couldnʼt resist the Petite Filet Mignon (8 oz.) — moist and rare on the inside and dark and rugged on the outside (HUM!!) and certainly we had to order the Angel Hair Pasta Pomodoro slender, modelesque with a wonderful aroma — one of the most requested items on the menu. It was simply lavish to eat and wrap around our tongues. Desserts were heavenly: Cheesecake—creamy and fluffy, The Grill Fudge Brownie Pie—is the restaurantʼs signature brownie topped with vanilla ice cream, warm caramel, chocolate sauce and candied pecan... it intoxicated our senses, and the Fresh Seasonal Berries—topped with a dollop of whipped cream were fresh and sweet. The atmosphere is Beverly Hills after all, so expect fancy, but not overwhelming. Itʼs an eye-candy place so look HOT! You never know who you are sitting next to. After 30 years, itʼs still a most wonderful place to enjoy a very Hollywood lunch or dinner. BHT
