CelebrityChic with Allison Kugel

Maria Menounos

And Her “EveryGirl” Brand Take on Fitness IT seems there are a plethora of celebrity lifestyle gurus on

the scene from Gwyneth Paltrow and Jessica Alba to Alicia Silverstone... all sharing tips on everything from how to dress and accessorize, to how to stay healthy and feel good in our own skin. Of all the advice espoused by famous faces, however, Extra! Host, star and producer of Oxygen Networkʼs Chasing Maria Menounos, and self-professed “EveryGirl,” Maria Menounos seems to be everybodyʼs darling. Maria is a self-made Hollywood success story with blue collar, Boston-bred, Greek immigrant roots. She maintains close relationships with her family, and says she lives in a state of gratitude for all the blessings in her life. I canʼt think of a more solid source of healthy lifestyle advice than Maria whose newest self-help tome, The EveryGirlʼs Guide To Diet And Fitness, is no exception. Maria tells me she works hard to maintain her gorgeous body through diligent diet and exercise. So naturally, The EveryGirlʼs Guide To Diet And Fitness is packed with practical and insightful weight loss and weight maintenance tips, healthy (and delicious) low-cal recipes, easy-to-follow workout routines straight from top experts, and interviews with fit and fabulous celebrity friends, Maria guides readers through the challenging, and sometimes discouraging, journey to achieving long-term fitness with baby steps anyone can follow and incorporate into their daily routine. This was my second interview with Maria; our first was for the website PR.com, in 2011. During this one, she shared sources of personal inspiration, specifically how she stays on track with her fitness goals, and just as important... how and when she allows herself to indulge without guilt. AK: In our interview for The EveryGirl’s Guide To Life, you talked about your journey from slob to super-organized. With The EveryGirl’s Guide To Diet And Fitness, you share your journey from an out-of-shape size 14 to a fit size 2. Celebs can be secretive about their “tricks.” Why spill the beans on your coveted beauty and fitness routine? MARIA: I am all about sharing information. Itʼs one of the positive things about living in the information age. I also love helping people. I ended my last book, The EveryGirlʼs

12 // bhtmag.com //

Guide To Life by saying the true reason we are here on earth as human beings is to help one another, and my stance on that has not changed. AK: Speaking of size 14 versus size what is your response to plus size women who shout from the rooftops that there is nothing wrong with being a size 14? MARIA: There is nothing wrong with being a size 14. Size and weight doesnʼt matter as we all have different body types. What matters is health. If youʼre overweight, you could be at risk for Diabetes and a host of other health issues. We all want to live long lives, and we all want to be productive in our later years, too. The goal needs to be long-term health over anything else. AK: I love how you advocate growing our own food, and give options on how to eat healthy regardless of someoneʼs budget. Which foods do you prefer to grow yourself, and which donʼt you mind picking up at a local Whole Foods or Farmerʼs Market? MARIA: I grow a variety of foods and Iʼm constantly changing them up. Thatʼs what makes it fun; but I'm never going to say, “Grow this over buying that.” AK: Strict rules take the fun out of it… MARIA: Right! I'm just happy to hear that people are getting fresh produce into their diet. Gardens are wonderful, but I do realize that many women don't have the space or time to commit to growing and tending one. It is all about small changes here and there.

AK: Your super-toned abs have become something of a trademark for you. Aside from your active and healthy lifestyle, how have you achieved and maintained such incredible abdominal definition? MARIA: Genetics play a part. My dad had amazing abs growing up, and he still does. I do tighten my stomach during the day as a form of exercise. And I'm not afraid to stick my feet under the couch and get in some crunches while Iʼm watching TV from time to time, either.

AK: My super downfall are sweets, namely chocolate. If it’s chocolate and it’s not nailed down, I’m eating it! If it weren’t for my chocolate addiction I’d likely be a size 2/4 instead of a 4/6. My weakness seems to be a popular one for women. Any advice you can share? MARIA: Drink hot water throughout the day (Maria opts for hot water in lieu of tea or coffee). It really is a deterrent. Try getting into organic chocolate. The texture is similar, and that may help.

AK: Portion control with sweets is another biggie! MARIA: Try eating 10-50% less of the chocolate portion in front of you. You can also say to yourself, “sugar is pain.” A trainer told me this when she relayed all the health issues that arise from sugar consumption. AK: During our last chat, you said to me, “I’m not really a traditional person.” This is kind of a weird segue, but does that help you to resist indulging in traditional holiday foods or traditional customary eating? For example, are you ok with skipping birthday cake on your birthday, or not eating a big holiday feast with family? MARIA: I'm not traditional when it comes to life path or career, but when it comes to holidays I'm all about tradition! I love birthday cake and I love Thanksgiving feasts. The thing is, those occasions literally happen once a year, and there is nothing wrong with that. When I know I am going to pig out over the holidays, I will work out in the morning before, or Iʼll be sure to try to eat cleaner leading up to those days, or afterwards. AK: So deprivation is out… MARIA: I donʼt believe in total deprivation, and I just donʼt have the willpower for it. AK: Do you feel that the outdoor California lifestyle and warm weather has helped you keep off those 40 pounds you famously lost? And since most people who will read your book throughout the country do live through long cold winters, I’m sure they would love to hear how you would navigate that. It’s hard

for people to stay motivated when they are hiding under bulky sweaters and winter coats for months. MARIA: I lost the weight when I lived in Boston through the dead of winter. My book has all of the steps, and it is doable. I'll admit itʼs easier in warm weather to stay active and trim. But again, the book has solutions to get you through. AK: I love, love, love that you donʼt just talk about diet and fitness in your book; you also include many recipes and workout demos for people to follow. I can see that many of your favorite recipes come from your tightknit Greek family, in particular your mom. Who are some of your very favorite workout mentors and experts? MARIA: My mom and I love Rachael Ray. We also love [personal trainer] Harley Pasternak and Jillian Michaels! AK: Assuming that you become a mom sometime in the future, how will you deal with putting on extra weight during pregnancy should you see a number on the scale that resembles your old pre-fitness/health weight? Any thoughts on how you will look upon the weight gain or adjust any emotional tie-ins to losing it. Pregnancy weight gain and loss, especially with celebrities seems to be in the headlines a lot these days? MARIA: I can tell you my worry wonʼt be about the weight. It will be about putting clean food into my body for the baby, more than anything. Obviously, I donʼt yet know exactly what that process entails, but you can bet I will when the day comes! AK: In your book you talk about your strict rule of no eating after 7PM. You even have a post-it on your kitchen wall that reads, “If it’s after 7, don’t even think about it!” So, even if it’s a cozy movie night? Even if you’ve had a really long, stressful day on set? MARIA: Those rules are there as guidelines more than strict rules. Of course, I sometimes indulge after 7PM, probably on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. Having the guideline helps to curb me. It keeps me on track. AK: So, it’s all about “indulging” being the exception, rather than the daily rule. I can live with that. MARIA: In the book I talk about building a fence, but giving you a big yard to play in. And in that yard there is definitely room to snack during late night movies. This Camp del Corazon celebrated its Jennifer Flavin 20th Anniversary honoring three very worthy, generous individuals for the contributions Stallone with to Camp del Corazon and the heart health community: Sylvester Stallone and Jennifer their daughter Flavin: As parents of a child born and growing up with Congenital Heart Disease they Sophia Rose are longtime supporters of Camp del Corazon, and opened their hearts as this yearʼs Co-Honorees. The Stallones know firsthand the physical and emotional adversity common amongst our campers and their families as their beautiful daughter Sophia Rose endured open heart surgeries as an infant and young adult. Camp del Corazon also presented David A. Ferry, M.D, a well-respected Pediatric Cardiologists in the Los Angeles area for his unparalleled gift of compassion for the well-being of his patients and families he serves. The event raised $500,000 for the Camp del Corazon programs.

ANIMAL RESCUE

Animal Cruelty Neglect • Abandonment • Fighting • Hoarding Kicking • Burning • Shooting • Drowning — 8-12 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide each year; 5-9 million are euthanized (60% of dogs and 70% of cats). — 900-2,000 new cases are reported each year of animal hoarding. — 100 million animals: mice, rats, dogs, cats, rabbits, monkeys, birds, and others are killed in U.S. laboratories for chemical, drug, food, and cosmetics testing each year. — 5,497 cases) of animal abuse last year were reported from neglect and abandonment.

106,000 PEOPLE DIE EACH YEAR FROM DRUGS TESTED SAFE ON ANIMALS

Beagles Freedom Project Building a Sanctuary…. Brick by Brick! The Beagle Freedom Project started in 2010 when information surfaced that beagles who were used for animal experiments in a research lab were given a chance at freedom. Beagles have proven to be the #1 breed for lab testing because they are friendly, calm, trusting and the research industry says they adapt to living in a cage, and are inexpensive to feed. Beagles used for research are most often obtained from commercial breeders who breed dogs to sell to scientific institutions. Research testing on beagles includes medical/pharmaceutical,

household products and cosmetics. When the beagles are no longer wanted for research purposes, some labs try to find homes for adoptable, healthy beagles. The Beagle Freedom Project removes and transports beagles from those labs to hopefully adopt them out to loving homes. These rescues are done legally with the cooperation of the facility. The Beagle Freedom Project and Rescue Outreach Center is a comforting place where rescued beagles can adjust to cage-free living for a few days or weeks before moving onto forever homes. Special public programs introduce the public to actual survivors of animal testing with an emphasis on cruelty-free activism! The BFP Rescue and Outreach Center (ROC) needs your help. The support you give now lays the foundation towards helping rescue laboratory animals! For further information visit: info@beaglefreedomproject.org www.beaglefreedomproject.com

Puppy Mills Shelter intakes are about evenly divided between those relinquished by owners and those picked up by animal control. These are national estimates: The percentage of euthanasia may vary from state to state. Less than 2% of cats and only 15-20% of dogs are returned to their owners. Most of these were identified with tags, tattoos or microchips. 25% of dogs that enter local shelters are purebred. Only 10% of the animals received by shelters have been spayed or neutered. 75% of owned pets are neutered.

WHY BUY AN ANIMAL COMPANION AT A STORE FROM A PUPPY MILL   WHEN SO MANY LIVE AND DIE IN  SHELTERS WHO NEED YOUR LOVE? Puppy mills are large-scale commercial dog breeding operations that put priority on profits not the health of the puppies. Many dogs are plagued with illnesses like kidney or heart disease as a result of the conditions they are kept in. A puppy mill, sometimes known as a puppy farm is

18 // bhtmag.com //

crowded, and animals are forced to live in substandard, dirty conditions unknown to those who purchase animals from them. Because puppy mills and kitty mills breed animals only for profit — they are not concerned with the health of the mothers, fathers or baby animals bred in their facilities, which range from filthy cages in backyards to steel cages in large areas where numbers count in the thousands. There are an estimated 4,000 puppy mills in the U.S. that produce more than half a million puppies each year. Before you consider “buying” an animal companion from a breeder or pet store, please stop by a local animal shelter and visit the many loving animals who live day to day hoping that they will be wanted and loved by someone and taken into a loving home. Adopting an animal who needs a home is a heartfelt decision that will bring many blessings into your life, family and home. BHT

Health Care:

It’s about prevention – not insurance By Sharyn Wynters

ON everyoneʼs mind is the Health

Care plan nicknamed ObamaCare. Whether you are a proponent or not, there are things you should understand about the health care industry. From fluoridated water and vaccines forced upon us to prescription medications that cost a fortune (and are designed for long-term use with side-effects that cause more problems than they cure) to the skyrocketing cost of health insurance in anticipation of the day not “if” but when you need medical treatment. The health care industry wants you to believe that sickness and disease are an inevitable part of your life. They are not. Medical insurance was originally designed for accidents/unforeseen circumstances that could not be prevented with precaution. Some medical insurance still include stipulations and minimum standards, but health insurance has no minimum standards or acknowledgment of the health advantages of pure water, smart food choices and a carefully maintained, nontoxic living environment. These factors are not considered when figuring the cost of insurance because if they were... they would provide a great incentive to adjust the less-than supportive health habits we have and give everyone an opportunity to reclaim responsibility for their health. Instead, incentives that favor rising health insurance costs support a rapidly growing “sick-care” industry. I admit itʼs difficult to stay healthy. We are bombarded with toxins in our food and environment. If pesticides arenʼt enough to ensure societies of sickly people, look to foods we consume that make us over weight, bed ridden, depressed, running in and out of doctors offices and taking bottles of prescription medications. Processed foods are the bigest “killers” — they have no nutritional value; have been stripped of their goodness AND then laden with preservatives that hinder the digestive process. Our world is confronted with potentially more disastrous health concerns with the genetic manipulation of our food, including, but not limited to the ensuing onslaught of radiation from Japan and chemtrails. Iʼve been against GMO from day one. Studies by independent groups are uncovering frightening dangers of the practice of splicing genes from foreign organisms into food crops in order to produce patented seed “pesticide-ready.” Over 70% of items on grocery store shelves contain genetically modified foods. Anything with corn, soy or sugar is suspec, and eating these foods has an effect on your health over time. No one talks about the radiation from Fukushima as it continues to rise in the ocean and in the atmosphere, but Milk and broad-leaved vegetables are heaviest hit. Allowable limits have already been raised on commodities and in years to come it will become impossible to guard against radiation-tainted food. With the topic of chemtrails in the news, we are learning these trails that criss-cross in the sky are likely laden with toxins. Everywhere I turn, people are sick with illnesses unheard of years ago. Cancer and heart disease — the biggest causes of death in the U.S. were allmosty unknown 75 years ago. How Can You Protect Yourself? A sufficiently strengthened immune system can withstand practically any assault. If you want to stay healthy, itʼs important to support your immune system. Three things are critical: 1. Exercise: This stimulates circulation, improves cardiac function and boosts immunity. It is also a way to eliminate toxins from your body. 2. Food choices: Select fresh, organic fruits and vegetables, rather than boxed, packaged and genetically modified foods. Many concentrated whole food supplements support the immune system. I have a complete program of detox and nourishment that I recommend for many of my clients.

20 // bhtmag.com //

3. Toxins: Start eliminating as many toxic products from your lifestyle and living environment as you can. I wrote the book, The Pure Cure as a guide to freeing your life from dangerous toxins. It will help you identify and replace many toxic substances. Donʼt be fooled by healthcare (aka “sick care”) propaganda. Get smart. Take responsibility for your health. Support your immune system. Prevent illness rather than prepare for it! Sharyn Wynters is a naturopath with more than 30 years experience in the wellness industry. She is the author of the book, The Pure Cure: A Guide to Freeing your Life from Dangerous Toxins. Sharyn has designed special protocols for regeneration and immune support. Some of Hollywoodʼs funniest celebrities took the mic to unmercifully roast and toast the man of the hour. Although the night was filled with laughter, guests never forgot the true meaning of the event which was to raise needed funds to benefit the Ryan's Reach Brain Injury Foundation which started out of gratitude to God, family, friends, and the medical community after Booneʼs grandson Ryan Crobin in 2001, fell through a skylight at is three-story apartment building in Brentwood, California and landed on concrete. He was in critical condition and doctors did not expect him to live. Not only did Ryan live, but through his foundation others with brain injuries have had a renewed chance at a better life as well. Ryanʼs Reach helps families who cannot afford medical treatment and funds the expansion of High Hopes, a full-service day treatment program with numerous therapeutic services for those with brain injuries. To make the evening more meaningful, Boone auctioned off his beloved Harley-Davidson motorcycle to benefit his grandsonʼs charity and his daughter

Providing for a Child with Special Needs: The Importance of Declaring Your Intentions Graham O’Kelly, CFA, Family Wealth Director The CORE Group at Morgan Stanley Beverly Hills • Education: Current plans and future goals. If your child is

While there is no single right way to create a letter of intent, it helps to start by recognizing that you could be speaking to people who may not have an opportunity to ask follow-up questions for clarification or amplification. In that light, begin your letter by setting the scene for your readers in broad strokes: Describe your vision for your childʼs life; Lay out your understanding of your childʼs talents, capabilities and interests; Highlight your guiding principles for child-rearing in general as well as for providing special-needs care and support. This can provide future caregivers valuable context for specific instructions and help set the tone for the more specific elements of your vision to follow. After you introduce your intentions, address each of these topics in detail as they relate to your childʼs needs and your expectations: • Family life, significant relationships and important contacts. Think about immediate and extended family relationships your child is exposed to today: siblings, grandparents, aunts and uncles and cousins. How do you support these relationships at present (Holiday visits? Shared vacations? Sleep-overs? Extended family dinners?); how would you like surrogates to do so in the future? Consider relationships with neighbors, friends, parents and others outside your family circle. Identify those worth maintaining. Outline practical maintenance steps for your surrogates. Consider the professionals in your childʼs life: teachers, classroom aides, tutors, therapists and clinicians. Some of these relationships may transcend boundaries and could add value to your childʼs life if they were continued.

receiving special services from a public school district, he or she is likely to be covered by an Individualized Education Program, or IEP. IEPs are usually created only after a great deal of discussion involving parents, educators and independent experts. IEPs are generally revisited yearly and revised as circumstances change. You can facilitate future IEP discussions by communicating your procedural tactics and objectives to your surrogates. (Keep in mind that a designated surrogate who was not previously involved in the IEP process may also benefit from basic background information on the specialized language and procedures involved). Your letter of intent should look beyond the IEP process by addressing how far on the educational ladder you see your child progressing. Higher education or conservatory training may be realistic aspirations. How do they fit with your vision for your child? What about technical training and commercial skills development—what roles do you think they might play? Do you have any specific schools, programs or vocational directions in mind? What about any preferences your child may express—what weight should they be given? These questions can be addressed in a letter of intent, along with suggested deployment of any discretionary financial resources. • Residence and living arrangements. The top three priorities for special needs children, like almost everyone else, are: Location! Location! Location! Your letter of intent should communicate the important parameters for the choice of location: proximity to friends and family and accessibility to resources such as schools, libraries, recreation, medical care and therapy. Also discuss your beliefs about independent living and your childʼs capability for managing his or her daily life. • Employment and occupational training plans. Many parents have strong opinions about occupational outcomes for their children. Your letter of intent is your forum for outlining your intended outcome and showing a path to achieve it. Many children develop strong opinions about their own futures and some parents use the process of drafting a letter of intent to build a consensus with their child and demonstrate their support for their childʼs choice of direction. • Management of behavior. Parents should articulate principles they follow in matters of child rearing and discipline. This discussion could include behaviors that need extra watching and include forms of direction youʼve learned to be effective or ineffective with the child. If you have explicit preferences about sanction and punishment, you could spell them out. • Management of chronic conditions. Children may have strong relationships with pediatricians, dentists, clinical specialists and therapists. Use your letter of intent to show how these relationships can be sustained in your absence. How would you want your childʼs care plans as circumstances change, and would you take account of your childʼs preferences. If relevant, outline your beliefs and preferences for the possibility of heroic

DESCRIPTOR

The “Letter of Intent” is an important part of a comprehensive estate plan for parents of a special needs child. It provides those who will carry out a parentʼs wishes with the context they need to fully apply the instructions laid out in wills, guardianship and trust documents.

BODY

What Would a Parent Do? For people guiding the care of a special needs child in the absence of the childʼs parents, this is not as much a philosophical question as it is a daily challenge: How can a surrogate caregiver make a childʼs life most like the life the parents had desired? You can help your designated surrogates perform that task by spelling out your vision in a letter of intent and giving copies of that letter to important people in your childʼs life, both those who are actively involved now and those who might be called upon in the future.

TOPICS TO COVER

and experimental medical interventions or the potential need for extraordinary life-saving measures. • Social and recreational life of the child. Some children need significant control and direction over matters involving their friendships and recreational activities. If this applies to your child, outline principles you would follow if you were in control. If you expect your child will assume greater responsibility in the future, outline how you might create a transition plan. If your child is already capable of significant self-management in any area, endorse his or her autonomy. • Religious and spiritual life of the child. Articulate preferences for your childʼs religious practices and observances. Put forth your desires for future religious education. If you give your child autonomy in this area, signal support for your childʼs preferences and expressions.

Other Considerations Other points to consider about letters of intent: • Share drafts of your letter with potential caregivers and surrogates. Assess their willingness/ability to follow directions you desire and negotiate resolutions to any differences of opinion in order to reach consensus for a course of action. • Make multiple copies of your letter with original signatures. Give copies to those with significant responsibility for areas of concern. Leave copies with your estate lawyer and anyone with fiduciary responsibility over trust or estate assets. • A letter of intent may not be a legally binding part of your estate plan, but provisions and expressions should be consistent with mandates youʼve expressed in trust, guardianship and estate documents. Some experts also suggest that your signature on the letter be formally witnessed and notarized. • Review your letter of intent periodically to ensure that its expressions address current circumstances and remain consistent with your will, trust deeds and other estate documents. • Many parents make an effort to involve their child (to the extent he or she is capable) in creating the letter of intent. Parents also extend the concept to create letters of intent covering nondisabled children as well, finding that it opens constructive channels of communication across the family. Effective plans for special needs children may require financial wherewithal to support declarations of intent. I have tools to help draw up an effective financial plan to sustain your intentions; among them, a work sheet to develop a realistic budget. Creating a meaningful letter of intent to guide the care of your special needs child is an intricate task, and you must weigh a host of competing priorities. I can help you evaluate the demands and reach a workable solution. BHT

Believe in yourself. Follow your dreams. Never give up. Thank God for the good. Overcome the bad. Help others.

Simin Hashemizadeh YES. She drives a Rolls Royce, lives in a mansion, wears designer labels, and spends weekends at her house in Malibu. NO. She doesn’t have a rich husband, isn’t a trust fund baby from a wealthy family and didn’t find a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow or win the lottery. HOWEVER. She does work six days/50 - 60 hours a week, owns several businesses she founded, oversees and personally micromanages a vast medical staff in numerous offices throughout southern California, helps her friends, and hosts red carpet events that raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for children’s and women’s organizations. AND. For years, Simin regularly drives to downtown Los Angeles to spends afternoons with homeless living on the streets and frequently visits those in shelters. She brings food and clothing, takes the time to speak with them and listens to what they say about their lives. She helps find medical assistance and is currently working on a project for television profiling “homeless-living” in Los Angeles. Not many are aware of Simin’s dedication to this cause, and those who are have asked her many times over the years why she isn’t afraid to be on the streets of Skid Row putting herself in potentially dangerous and vulnerable situations. Her answer... “There is no difference between you and I and those who are homeless and living on the street except one thing: circumstance of life. Life changes overnight. One day we’re up, the next we’re down; no one knows what’s around the corner but God. People living on the streets or who are down on their luck likely wouldn’t have thought this would be their life, but it is. What you and I have can be gone tomorrow and people would say the same about us... ‘What happened to so-and-so that their life has become so bad?’ What happens is circumstance of life — and we have no control over it. My goal is to continue my efforts with the disadvantaged even if it’s one day at a time; one person at a time. I won’t stop trying to make a positive difference in the lives of those who feel hopeless. Each of us has given up hope at one time; then found it again. We must thank God for the good he brings to our lives, and during our joyful times never forget our hopeless times and those who helped us through them. We can be ‘hope’ to someone just as others were ‘hope’ to us when we were down. And ‘hope’ comes in many ways; not just with money, but giving time to someone who feels alone, speaking to them with caring words and listening with tender hearts. All these things make a difference in someone’s life.”

Simin’s New Book FOCUS: Faith Opportunity Creates Unlimited Success — 9 Steps To A Prosperous Life Is an encouraging and uplifting look into the life of a woman who wouldn’t accept defeat, refused to take “NO” for an answer, learned to believe in herself when no one else did, and fought with all her heart to keep her footing and regain her confidence when others tried to bring her down with negativity, criticism, jealously and disapproval. FOCUS is for every woman who has hopes and dreams of a better life. 24 // bhtmag.com //

STORYSuzanneTakowsky PHOTOSKOJI FILM & Nina Kits Hair & MakeupMohammad & Kim Vo OVER many years on this planet, and 18 years publishing a magazine, I have met

thousands of people. And, itʼs because of these people that I have learned FOUR lifealtering lessons in life: 1. Whoever is free of guilt can throw the first stone. (which is nobody alive because we all have trash in our garbage cans). 2. You can’t judge a book by its cover. (just when I think I know someone the hammer drops and they are incredibly better or much worse than I imagined). 3. Don’t judge anyone until you have walked in his/her shoes. (regardless of what the gossip mills churn out no one knows the REAL story except the person who is living it). 4. You can’t please everyone all the time. (or even part of the time — there will always be those judging, criticizing, gripping or being negative no matter what you do, so find what makes you happy and go get it — don’t stop for nothin’ no matter what — no matter what!). Certainly these are worthy of our attention, but can be difficult to abide by as we are only human, and the satisfaction of indulging in sidesteps of deceit, jealously, lying, revenge, sabotage, malicious gossip, hatred... can be buggers to avoid. From where I sit, however, the most enviable people in life have little time for busy-bodying in other peopleʼs business and rarely allow what others think or do to break their concentration of focusing on themselves and their goals. And, itʼs their determination to succeed that keeps us transfixed on their next move. There are long-hours to my work day; some move slower than others and there are times when I would rather be out in the sunshine than at my

computer. But I remind myself that the positives of my job far outweigh the negatives by a billion miles. Through my job Iʼve had the privilege of meeting some of the most fascinating people on earth — and I mean earth. From every interview Iʼve done, Iʻve learned a thing or two that has changed my thinking about something. And although each person has their own unique and vivid recollections of roads less traveled, heartbreaks that altered their lives and moments meant to turn the tides on their dreams and hopes— the one unwavering component linking successful people is that each had to accept the fact that in order to succeed, they had to venture beyond what others think, say and do, and focus on what they think, and what they want. To do this they must become relentless self-motivators. Successful people have a driving force to succeed regardless of any failures, negativity or sideline banter that gets tossed their way. Iʼve known Simin Hashemizadeh for almost 10 years. Weʼve seen one another at our best, and been there for each other when the ceiling has come crashing down. How lucky are we to be such close friends? And how lucky are other women who have similar friendships? A critical lesson women learn—some sooner than others— that itʼs other women and their love, friendship, strength, and support that gets us through life. Thatʼs why “hating” on others within our sex seems so sinful to me. Almost as if we are defeating our purpose in collectively growing stronger and more productive. When Simin decided to write a book about her life I was encouraging, yet concerned how she could crossover her years growing up in Iran to a story of living in America. But it became clear her book wasnʼt about differences, but rather a commonality among all people, especially women, as we come face to face with ourselves and find the strength to improve our lives, and accept the truth that itʼs OK to dream big, grow strong and be relentless as we go after our happiness.

MOTIVATION To Stay In The Game

“When I was a child, one night I told my parents I wanted to go to bed early. ‘Why? Are you tired,’ my mother asked with a questioning look. ‘No,’ I replied, “I want to go to sleep earlier because I want to dream earlier.’ We all have dreams, but acquiring the skills to pursue our dreams isn’t easy. I clearly remember 2007, a very difficult time in my life. For the first time I was doubting myself. It was July 7th (my birthday) and I was alone. I had no car, my business was not doing well, I was behind in my mortgage payments — all because I put my trust in a woman who stole my entire savings leaving me with nothing. I felt like a fool. I had no one to help me even though I helped many when they were struggling — now they didn’t return my call. I remember the pain of knowing I had no one to turn to. The hurt of being ignored during such a traumatic time was crushing. But in the end it was that pain that gave the strength to regain my footing. I knew that those who were jealous of my business success would rejoice as I stood by and watched all my years of hard work become nothing. The more I thought about it, the worse I felt about myself. Selfdoubt is powerful if we allow it to be. It dissipates our ability to find solutions to our dilemmas and move on. But, when I confided in God it was not the bad I was reminded of; it was the three most important things that would make me happy and successful. #1 has always been to take care of my parents. At that time, my father was in heaven, but my mother was healthy and living in Los Angeles and happy to be near me. #2 be a successful entrepreneur and business owner. #3 help the disadvantaged however I could. Blaming others if things go wrong is easy, but being honest with ourselves is vital to getting back on our feet. I had a decision to make: Walk away from my business, or rebuild it. An ancient Persian proverb says, ‘A drowning man is not troubled by rain,’ — however difficult a situation seems, there is always something that can turn it around. Taking responsibility for what happened stopped my self-doubt because if I caused the problem, I had the power to correct it. I worked non-stop on a plan to rebuild my business and approached several doctors to work at my medical facilities. They came on board with patients and business began to renew itself. It is easy to be confident when things are good. But our true character and strength emerges when things are not going well; when our backs are against the wall with no one in our corner but us. When we are down, it takes every ounce of brainpower, motivation, determination and perseverance to get back our confidence, take back our power and get on track. But we can do it. We are much stronger than we even think we are.” 26 // bhtmag.com //

Born in the beautiful country setting city of Arak, Iran, Simin Hashemizadeh and her family along with millions of other Iranians from every region, were forced to flee the homeland they loved to find a new life in the United States. All were in search of peace, security, safety and a chance at happily-ever-after. Unfortunately, what most found was not an easy life. A language barrier, social injustices, and limited resources stood in the way. Siminʼs long-awaited dream of personal freedom and professional opportunity as a businesswoman in America proved daunting and a million miles out of her reach. This is not just Siminʼs story. The barriers she faced, millions of women worldwide in all cultures and countries face as they try to better their lives. Even still, Siminʼs core belief remains steadfast: That true fulfillment and success in life is not just about surviving. Itʼs about thriving. Itʼs about believing in ourselves when nobody else does, and digging deep to find the inner strength to fight our deepest fears. Does this seem like an almost impossible feat to accomplish? Yes. Almost. But not always. And, certainly not for those not to be deterred from their dreams or sidestepped from achieving their goals. For them... for people like Simin, a NO is always a MAYBE and MAYBE is always a YES. The question is never whether you want something. The question is always how badly you want it. And some of us want lots of stuff REAL bad! How about you? Siminʼs book, FOCUS: Faith Opportunity Creates Unlimited Success - 9 Steps To A Prosperous Life is more than just her journey to becoming a successful business entrepreneur, although as founder of seven medical centers, an imaging center and businesses that include Forbelle Luxury Caviar (a skincare line), S9 Health Drink, a production company and now author—her daily workload is more than impressive, itʼs more like something in the superhuman category! This woman never stops from when her day begins at 5AM until her last email is posted, and the next dayʼs schedule are tightly checked — most days its well after midnight. Simin says that writing this book was a way to chronicle her journey from employee to employer. “The true life of a businessowner; the failures and successes are ongoing. And, there are always plenty of one and never enough of the other. The truth about ‘life’ for those who aspire to greater career heights is that it’s not a walk in the park or for the faint of heart. Life at the top can get lonely, and success isn’t a fast track to happiness. Success in one area is merely a stepping stone to the next mountain you are willing to climb.” What she says is true. Often women are fast to hide their fears, talk about their short comings or replay the worst of their journeys for fear it will depict them as vulnerable. Some women donʼt share their roadmap to success because they fear other women might take their place. But fear is fear no matter how you try to disguise it. How are women to learn unless those who have made it are willing to share the truth of their journey? Siminʼs book offers an intuitive and upfront focus on overcoming the selfdoubt that limits our options and destroys our ability to believe in ourselves. Her insight is finely-tuned to recognize opportunity when it presents itself and how to purposefully invite success into our orbit. Simin offers us a rags to riches formula to get what we want out of life. ST: Why are people so afraid to admit their mistakes? SH: Because people see mistakes as failures instead of what they are; avenues for learning. Nobody wants to make a mistake and some are worse than others, but one thing is for sure... we wonʼt make the same mistake a second time because we learned a lesson. When I make a mistake, Iʼm the first to admit it because time is not on the side of the person who makes a mistake. The more time that elapses, the more difficult it is to recover. Itʼs impossible to pretend you didnʼt make a mistake especially if you are in a position of authority. The only option is to take the high road and admit it, then move to solve it. When a person fails to admit a mistake it breaks the “team” spirit in an office environment. No one is too big to admit they were wrong. One time, I thought an employee lied to me and I made a big deal out of it. Then, I found out they hadnʼt and I was wrong. I immediately apologized to that person in front of the entire office. Owning up to a mistake doesnʼt make you look weak. Apologizing and correcting a mistake makes you look strong and in control. It sends the message that you are more concerned in a positive outcome than in pretending to be right when everyone knows you are clearly wrong. Taking responsibility is the first step to bring focus back on all the good things you do, and let people know you are resolving the problem.

“In my life I’ve learned pain makes me stronger and more determined to survive. My feet may be sore, my back may ache, my head might be pounding and my heart very heavy; but I keep going and learn from the experience. Soon I see the mountain that seemed so high and out of reach can be conquered after all. I am a better person for what I have endured in life. I know I will never be able to please everyone and I will always have my critics, but as long as I stay focused on my goals and true to my intention, I find fulfillment and peace within.”

ST: I feel women hold back even when we have an edge. I don’t see this with men. In 2014, self-doubt and low self-esteem still seem to be our worst enemy. SH: Most females are not raised to go out into the world and take care of themselves; be head of household; be a hunter, take responsibility for their actions; be aware of those they can and canʼt trust. I was brought up in a very traditional family with six brothers and sisters. My mother stayed home to nurture us and my father supported us and made sure our lives were secure and we stayed in school to achieve higher educational goals. Owning a business is less glamour and more hard work. I started my first business with $1,500 I charged on my credit card. I made mistakes and learned the hard way that not everyone had my best interests in mind like my father and mother. I had to grow

up fast. People I trusted with money stole it. Two doctors right here in Beverly Hills came to work for me just to steal my patients (I talk about this experience in my book). People claimed to be able to do so many things; in the end they did nothing but waste my time and money. These things happen in different ways to people every day who put their trust in others. But you learn to swim with the sharks. Females assume people will help us, watch out for us, do what is right for us. That may not always be the case. We must take responsibility for ourselves. This is difficult with all that is expected of us, and all we expect from ourselves. We get swayed when it comes to making decisions, standing up for ourselves, asking for what we deserve because our confidence, and self-awareness is not where it should be. One of our most underappreciated

traits is our inborn instinct. We must nurture our instinctive abilities to where there is no question in our minds what we feel is the truth. This takes great trust in ourselves. People come and go from our lives but at the end of the day the person in the mirror is still here. We must have faith that we can take care of ourselves, accomplish our goals and better our lives. Weʼve all had times when we knew something wasnʼt right, yet we kept quiet, kept our views to ourselves. In the end our instincts proved to be correct. Who ends up getting hurt? We do. I wrote this book because I have been through many experiences and owning businesses have taught me invaluable lessons. Why not share them? If someone takes even one thing away that helps in some way to improve their lives—then thatʼs my goal. continued page 28

Become your own self motivator. ST: What do you consider a starting point? SH: Be careful who we let in our lives. Some people donʼt have our best intentions in their hearts. Surround ourselves with positive, encouraging and responsive people we instinctively feel are on our team. Donʼt close our eyes to the reality of a situation. If something doesnʼt feel right — it isnʼt! Donʼt be afraid to stop immediately. Channel out negative energy from others. Be prepared for criticism. Move forward with our goals. Donʼt grab onto the first “life jacket” someone tosses at us. When we are desperate, upset and our back is against the wall is the worst time to make a decision. Take time to get your focus back. Sit down and make a written plan of action before you do anything. List things you want and things you donʼt. Taking time to list things on paper helps bring your focus back to what is important. Our biggest enemies are self-doubt and negativity. The biggest lessons come with experience. Mistakes are an inevitable part of life. Rather than seeing them as things that held us back, see mistakes as providing valuable information that will ultimately push us ahead. Living in regret of what happened does not help us move forward. Regret sucks the life out of what we are tying to accomplish. It would be wonderful if we could change others, but we canʼt. We can only change ourselves. It took me years to realize the importance of not making excuses for negative family members, friends and co-workers. When I came to the United States, I worked for other people, but realized I needed to change my way of thinking if I wanted to achieve my business goals. Once I realized what my passion was, everything was geared to make it happen. I didnʼt stop until that goal was achieved. And, it wasnʼt easy because nobody was supportive of my intention to start my own business. ST: It’s funny you say this. When I told people I wanted to start a magazine 19 years ago the same thing happened to me. One woman I knew told me to forget about it because 98% of magazines close their doors within one year. I made a mental note never to speak to her again. Life is difficult enough without negativity from others. SH: Exactly. If we donʼt feel satisfied with things in our lives take it as a sign we need to follow another path, or fix the one we are on. Change starts with us making the decision to try something new — make a move — take action. And once a decision is made surround ourselves with positivity, encouragement and a team that supports our goals. That doesnʼt mean just be around “yes” people who bring no challenge into our vision. We want sharp, focused, positive people who although have a different view, are committed to our intended outcome. Life is not just about getting what we want, itʼs also about enjoying our journey on the way. Fun, laughter, friends and family we enjoy being with — this is life. These are the things that fill our souls and fuel our hearts to go out into the world and become successful in our passions. People run into trouble when they forget the true purpose of life. Success is about so much more than money. Helping others is what life is really about and where we find true happiness. Some days for me are devastating; some bring bad news from family members, some bring bad news with regard to one of my businesses or problems with staff, or hearing a cruel remark someone has said about me, or one of my family. No day comes and goes without pain, sorrow, discomfort, hurt feelings or disappointment of some kind. BUT we are here because of Godʼs will and itʼs up to each of us to be the best person we can be in all ways. Life is not always about “US” — life is so much bigger than that. When I have a day that is determined to drag me down, I stop what I am doing and get in my car and go to the homeless living on Skid Row and bring food and sit and talk with them. Rarely does anyone ask for money. They want my attention and to feel someone cares. Or I visit with people who are sick, or the elderly who feel they are alone in this life. When I find myself dwelling on my problems, I offer my assistance to someone who needs help. Doing something for someone else allows us to reach clarity about our own issues. Helping those who are struggling puts our own problems in perspective and points toward what is truly important in life, and money is not at the top of our list. Those we love are what count in life. The well being and health of my mother remains my first priority. Yes, we have a bad moment, hour or day, but instead of living in regret we should be grateful for what God has given us and, concentrate on all we have, instead of what we donʼt. Love for and from others truly feeds our souls and motivates us to move forward in life.

ST: Change is another tough one for women. Self doubt can be difficult to work around. SH: In Iran we say, “Doubt is the key to knowledge.” Life is not a race to win. Itʼs like a school, you come in knowing nothing, but the more you study, the more successful you are. When I discovered my Dad had cancer, it was a blow to my stomach that felt like a punch. I was the first person to know about his illness and it hurt me so much. My own issues became secondary as I struggled to cope with the knowledge of him being sick. But through it all he remained strong and encouraged me to find my way in life. Moving away from Iran and the culture I knew and people I loved was heart wrenching, but I remembered things my father said to me that kept me strong. There are times in our lives when loss and change is inevitable. These are things we must face and cope with and grow from. My feeling about “change” is that itʼs important for growth. Iʼve always believed if you donʼt like something change it. If you canʼt change a situation, maybe itʼs time to change yourself and, do it for yourself. People have no clue what another goes through in life, only we know the journey we have traveled.

“Even as a child I had dreams of owning my own business. When I opened my first medical center in 1996, everyone tried to talk me out of it, except for my father who founded more than 300 medical clinics in Iran. I watched him do charity work and care for the needs of others. I admired his desire to make certain no one he came into contact with went without. This touched me profoundly, and I try to follow in his footsteps. He was my mentor and my rock... an example of what success truly means. He passed away in 1998, but remains a guiding light through every step of my journey. I hear him whispering words of encouragement even as I sleep; he is like an angel to take me out of my dark moments and point me in the right direction.” 28 // bhtmag.com //

“When I first came to the United States, I felt like people didn’t take me seriously because of my Persian accent. So, although I love and use my born language every day, I also recognized the importance of being able to effectively communicate in English if I was to achieve my goal of becoming a successful businesswoman. I worked diligently at strengthening my English, improving my communication skills and especially, I paid close attention to how I listened to what others were saying to me. Over the course of my entrepreneurship, I’ve learned that the best communicators are great listeners. I have met many successful people from all walks of life and noticed they have two distinct characteristics: they listen first, and then speak. Failure to listen to what another person is saying can lead to misunderstanding and missed opportunities. Good communication helps us connect with others, express our true intentions and build trust and stronger relationships.” Over the years I have watched Simin help raise millions of dollars to help so many people in so many ways. From her own non-profit charity organization, The Simin Hope Foundation which reaches across the greater Los Angeles boundaries helping underserved children and teenagers with programs geared to moving them closer to futures filled with hope and opportunity; organizations including Red Eye Inc., an affiliate arm of the Dream Center Downton keep teenagers and young adults off drugs, sober and off the street; to the Malibu Jewish Center and Synagogue, the Leukemia Lymphoma Society, National MS Society; several animal rescue organizations — even a non profit in South Africa that provides clean water and other much needed food resources to millions. There are many things I admire about Simin, but topping the list is that she is never too busy with her own life to lend a helping hand to others. Iʼve been with her on many occasions when she has been honored for her courageous, charitable and generous contributions and although she never talks about all she does, her contributions to making this world a better place have not gone unnoticed. She was given the “Touching Lives” award for care and responsibility to the city of Los Angeles; “Continued Benevolent Support” award from the International Association for Children with Cancer; “Los Angeles Police League” award for community service; the “Humanitarian Achievement Silver Award” by the British American Business Council in Los Angeles for supporting international business relations; recognized by the city of Beverly Hills for extraordinary philanthropic endeavors; American Red Cross Society for humanitarian efforts; commended by the California State Senate for dedication and contribution towards humane efforts; recognized by the Beverly Hills City Council for extraordinary achievement; awarded an Honorary Doctorate in the Social Sciences by the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences; received a distinguished contribution award from the Larry King and Friends Foundation; and an Honorary Doctorate in Medicine from Dubai International University. The list goes on. How does she have time to engage and help and dedicate herself to these organizations and more — and run several businesses? Itʼs not that she has time; itʼs that she makes time.

“I am grateful to be a part of organizations that are committed to helping so many people in such diverse ways. I believe it is our obligation to share what we have been so graciously blessed to receive with those who are forced to live with so little. Every day we should wake to see the good in our lives because we are so fortunate to live in a country where we have the freedom and opportunity to pursue our dreams and make a difference in this world. Whether or not my day will be a good one is a choice I make every morning before getting out of bed. Therefore, first thing in the morning, I make the decision to have a good day. I rise early, dress beautifully and do my hair and makeup because it makes me feel good about myself, and it sets the tone for me feeling good about my businesses and what I am doing. But if throughout the day, things begin to come undone, I remember that tomorrow is another opportunity. I have always believed deeply that women hold this world together with their love, passion, inspiration, hard work, vision and willingness to help others. Yet, increased responsibility in both our personal and professional lives can take a devastating toll on our health and happiness and drag us down. That is why itʼs so important to keep positivity in our lives and appreciation for all we have on the forefront of our thinking. Day to day pressures especially for women are expanding not decreasing. Social norms more than ever dictate we must have a career to be fulfilled. But that is not correct. Every one of us has different goals, and looks for happiness in different ways. There is no reason for females to be saddled with the unfair burden of fighting to prove ourselves for the decisions we make. Women who find happiness within their homes should not be made to feel guilty or dissatisfied. Women who choose careers should not be made to feel guilty because they are not at home. We cannot find true meaning in our lives as long as we are living by what others expect of us. We have to find ways to fulfill our dreams and achieve happiness through self awareness — and with self awareness comes the opportunity to enjoy the individuality of who we are and share it with others. Hopefully, long after we have left this world, people will remember us for the good we brought into their lives.” BHT

Business Strategy Success for 2014 By Harvey Mackay Don’t Let Fear Of Success Hold You Back! LEGEND has it that one day a man

was walking in the desert when he met Fear and Plague. They said they were on the way to a city to kill 10,000 people. The man asked Plague if he was going to do all the work. Plague smiled and said, “No, Iʼll take care of only a few hundred. Iʼll let my friend Fear do the rest.”

"The Second Ten Commandments" Can you actually die from fear? Most likely not. What fear kills is your spirit, your ambition, your confidence. Several years ago I wrote a column about, "The Second Ten Commandments." Commandment two stated: Thou shall not be fearful, for most of the things we fear never come to pass. Every crisis we face is multiplied when we act out of fear. Fear is a self-fulfilling emotion. When you fear something, you empower it. If you refuse to concede to fear, there is nothing to fear. Success usually depends on overcoming your fears: fear of taking a risk, fear of asserting yourself, fear of exposing your deepest self to other people, and ultimately, fear of failure. But for some people, the real fear is – believe it or not – success itself. Fear of failure can be crippling, but fear of success can paralyze your efforts just as severely. Avoiding success may seem irrational, but success brings change, and change is often threatening. We fear success because success can bring expectations of continued success. Achieving a major goal is hard work. What happens if people expect you to keep doing it indefinitely? Can you continue to produce? Another concern is that co-workers may look to you for advice or assistance once youʼve proved you can succeed. You may lose control over your time or your privacy. Or you might offer advice that doesnʼt work as well as hoped. Then your achievements might become suspect. And, you certainly donʼt want to make enemies of the people you work with. Some people delight in taking down successful people. Envious or hostile peers can make life miserable. Can you bring them on board on another project so they can also celebrate some success?

Overcoming Fear The prospect of actually reaching a goal can be terrifying: What comes next? How will people react? What if your goal turns out to be meaningless? These worries can lead to procrastination and selfsabotage. To overcome them, and achieve the success you were meant to enjoy, follow this advice.

• Face Your Fears. Explore the emotions you have about success. Analyze what you are really afraid of, and it will usually lose its impact. • Focus On The Process. The end result may be important, but as with any journey, the individual steps can be more meaningful than the destination. Concentrate on what you are learning, the people you meet, and the experiences you collect as you move closer to your goal. • Analyze Past Successes. Look at projects or achievements from your past. What obstacles did you face? How did success make you feel? What changed as a result? This will help you sort through and clarify your fears and your ability to overcome them. • Anticipate The Changes. Ask yourself, “What will happen when I succeed?” By confronting fears, you take away their power, and you will be able to identify strategies for moving beyond them.

• Select Worthwhile Goals. Pursue goals

that address your needs, not anyone elseʼs. Take time to think through what success will really mean before committing yourself. Youʼll only be excited about success if itʼs what you truly want. • Think About The Rewards. Donʼt let concerns about the future distract you from the positive benefits of reaching your goals. Visualize the upside: the final product, a satisfied customer, a check, or some other tangible results. • Create New Behaviors. After you have looked through the issues, start devising strategies for moving forward. How can you reinforce your self-confidence? What excuses do you need to eliminate? How can you sustain your motivation? • Be Realistic. Remember that success wonʼt solve all your problems, but the feeling of accomplishment can make everyday irritations easier to tolerate even if you canʼt erase them. Benjamin Franklin had some timeless advice for those who are afraid of success and failure: “The man who does things makes mistakes, but he never makes the biggest mistake of all – doing nothing.” Mackay’s Moral: If you want to be successful, you must first succeed in conquering your fear.

When Visa or The Government Calls… By Sandy Botkin CPA. Esq. Author of “Achieve Financial Freedom: Big Time”

“The money is the same, whether you earn it or scam it.” — Bobby Heenan IT should come as no surprise that in this era of electronic funds transfer, identity

theft is on the rise. The cost to businesses worldwide has been estimated to be a staggering $221 billion dollars each year! Moreover, many major department stores have been hacked, such as Target, which allowed for about 110 million Americans to be at risk, and this was just ONE store breach among many others! The IRS just issued their top dozen tax scams. It shouldn’t surprise you either that Identity theft and Phishing scams (which is related to identity theft) are at the top of list. Scammers are realizing that it’s much safer and more lucrative to scam people through identity theft than to rob a bank. Sadly, no matter how diligent you are about your personal data, your identity and credit card data can be gotten by thieves in many ways. For example, a social worker was just indicted for using their jobs to steal personal data, but also by selling the information. Also, scammers look for outgoing mail placed in mail boxes in order to open up the mail and retrieve credit card and other personal information. Likewise, scammers have used the phone and email to solicit this data from unsuspecting victims. The scammer might call you while posing as an IRS agent or even a police officer, informing you that you either are entitled to a refund or that you owe money; however, you need prove your identity by giving out personal data. Thus, what can you do in order to limit your exposure and reduce the potential damages?

Here Is A Great Checklist For You To Use 1. Use common sense: No government agency or credit card company will ask for any personal data either over the phone or by email. No company will ask for data that they already should have. At most, they might ask for the last four digits of your credit card. NEVER give out credit card numbers or personal data to anyone who either calls you on the phone or sends you an unsolicited email. I also don’t give out any credit card data to charitable solicitors since I don’t really know who they are.

2. Always make copies of both sides of any credit cards that you carry with you. This way, if you lose your credit card, wallet or purse, you know exactly what cards you have and what numbers to call in order to cancel these cards.

3. Always use a credit monitoring service. There are many of them such as Identity Guard, Lifelock, AARP, etc.

4. Always carefully read over your bank statements and credit card statements. Scammers have learned that small charges each month tend not to be discovered.

5. Always place a fraud alert every 90-days with one of the big three credit monitoring services. There are three major credit bureaus: Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax. If you place a fraud alert, it will be harder to take out credit in your name and, most importantly, you will be notified if someone does try to take out credit in your name. Sadly, this normally needs to be constantly updated every 90-days unless you can prove with paperwork that you are a victim of identity theft. In that case, you can get an extended fraud alert that remains part of your credit files for seven years. Thus, if you are not currently an identity theft victim, you will need to set up a constant reminder to constantly replace this fraud alert upon the end of the 90-day period.

Note: You don’t need to place a fraud alert with each of the credit bureaus. Just placing it on one bureau will work for all three bureaus. Moreover, placing a fraud alert is FREE.

6. Place a fraud alert with each credit card vendor that you have: Most credit card merchants such as VISA, American Express and MasterCard have their own fraud alert system that will alert you if anyone tries to make a purchase online without showing a credit card. You need to set this up for each credit card that you use. It can be done online and it is free. Even better, it lasts until you remove this alert. Thus, you don’t have to constantly update it as you do with the credit bureaus.

7. Shred all documents that you don’t need if they show personal data: I would recommend shredding all documents you don’t absolutely need if it shows either credit card numbers or social security numbers. Alternatively, if you need the document, at least scratch out the personal data.

8. Always place your outgoing mail in a pubic mailbox and NOT in your personal mailbox.

9. If you find that someone has stolen your identity, you need report the situation to the Federal Trade Commission either online or by phone. In addition, you need to contact the various reporting agencies as follows: Equifax: 800-525-6285 Experian: 888-397-3742 TransUnion: 800: 680-7289

When VISA calls you to report that your card may be jeopardized, your first instinct is to tell them everything you know in order to take care of the problem…but DON’T!

IT’S A SCAM.

a. You need to call the Social Security fraud line at: 800-269-0271 b. You need to contact all creditors with whom your name or identifying data have been fraudulently used. For example: you need to contact your long distance phone company if your long distance calling card has been stolen. c. File a police report in the jurisdiction where your credit cards were stolen. d. Contact all financial institutions where you have accounts and tell them that an identity thief has compromised your name and accounts or has created an account in your name. If you have had checks stolen from you or your bank, immediately contact a major check verification company such as Check Rite Systems. e. Finally, if you have had your identity stolen, file tax returns as early as possible. Thieves try to file false tax returns in your name in order to get your potential refund.

Bottom Line: You may not be able to stop all ID theft. However, you can minimize both the risk and the damages that can occur if you follow these steps, which will make your life less taxing. Brunettes get brassy, reds fade fast, and blondes get brittle and dingy. The best way to avoid color fading is to wash with cool water rather than hot. Washing strips natural oils and hard water leaves mineral to deposits. Using hot water opens up the cuticle layer of hair, speeding up this process. Also, wash hair less frequently. WORKOUT HAIR TIPS

All women who work out three or more times a week, regardless of hair texture struggle with their hair.

Hair Do’s & Dont’s When Working Out

Pre-workout — Dry shampoo: Comes in a spray or powder form and is designed to be used infrequently (two times a week). Use before you workout; it can SAVE straight and curly hair. If your hair is dark, it will be visible until you sweat, then disappear. Less is more; donʼt over saturate hair. The key: do this pre-work out, then put hair in a protective style.

Workout Protective Hair Styles

When To Shampoo Hair If you work out 3-4 times a week, like I do, you should wash hair almost daily. Avoid stripping your hair with a co-wash (washing the hair using

conditioner rather than shampoo). Itʼs important for you to wash off the sweat and dirt to avoid any scalp buildup and prevent breakage. Washing your hair the night before is another option. Twist or cornrow it up at night and in the morning put on your headband and go, go, go!!!! Skin Rejuvenation with Lasers

Beverly Hills Cosmetic Surgeon Dr.

Kathy Gohar

The Latest & Greatest

Skin Rejuvenation of the Face With Fraxel Laser Instead of Surgery The Benefit of Fraxel Laser Dr. Gohar: A great laser to restore a youthful appearance to the face, neck, chest and hands is Fraxel Laser. Fraxel rejuvenates skin and reduces fine lines, surgical and acne scars, hyper-pigmentation and age spots with minimal downtime. Fraxel also helps eliminate wrinkles around the eyes, decreases melasma (mask of pregnancy), and helps to resurface skin back to its youthful days. Fraxel Repair is the only laser that delivers the capability of conventional bulk ablative lasers without a long downtime or complications. Unlike traditional CO2 lasers, Fraxel repair lasers use microscopic treatment zones (MTZs) to erode skin tissue deep within the dermis. Fraxel treats only a fraction of tissue at a time, leaving the surrounding tissue untouched, promoting rapid healing and leading to coagulation, tissue shrinkage and tightening of the skin. Most patients look and feel an average of 5-10 years younger. before

growth factors, platelet-derived growth factors, and epidermal and fibroblast growth factors—crucial to stimulate re-vascularization and collagen stimulation. Fibrin also provides a matrix upon which blood vessels and fat grow. Patients favor Selphyl treatments as it is completely natural; no animal or foreign components virtually eliminate the risk of an allergic or adverse reaction. I personally had my Selphyl procedure done two years ago and had the best results. Patients constantly ask me, “Doctor what have you done to your skin? You look amazing!” Selphyl is what I did.

Getting Rid of Spider Veins Fraxel Restore is designed for patients with an active life who want amazing results with minimum downtime. Patients experience a smoother refreshed skin, while improving tone and texture. Fraxel Restore safely penetrates the skin's deeper layers to stimulate the body's own natural healing process to create new collagen. Old and damaged cells are replaced with fresh, glowing, healthy skin. Results are both immediate and progressive. After a treatment, the surface of your skin looks and feels softer and smoother, skin looks brighter with a more even tone. In the following 3-6 months, there will be continued improvement as deeper skin layers continue to create new collagen. Results are generally long lasting depending on a patientʼs age, lifestyle, skin condition and skin care.

VAMPIRE FACELIFT

The HOT procedure in Beverly Hills Dr. Gohar: The Vampire Facelift combines Selphyl, Botox and Fillers to rejuvenate the face. The Selphyl procedure takes about an hour. Dr. Gohar: We have both sclerotherapy and Laser Vein therapy in our office. Sclerotherapy treats spider veins and blood vessel malformations. Medication is injected into the vessels, causing them to shrink. After a few weeks the body absorbs the treated veins, allowing them to dissolve and disappear. In adults Sclerotherapy is used to treat reticular and spider veins; in children and young adults Sclerotherapy treats vascular malformations. Sclerotherapy vs Laser Sclerotherapy is preferred over laser treatment when patients are looking to eliminate spider veins and smaller varicose leg veins. The Sclerosing solution closes feeder veins located beneath the skin which cause spider veins to form, so a recurrence in the already treated area is unlikely. This is a significant difference from laser treatment which only eliminates spider veins, but doesnʼt close feeder veins. Laser Vein therapy is for small veins that a needle canʼt penetrate, or for large Varicose Veins. An initial consultation in our office can determine which is the best treatment for the results you want to achieve. after Sclerotherapy & Recovery With Sclerotheraphy, a patientʼs leg is compressed with stockings that are worn for two weeks after treatment. Patients are encouraged to walk regularly during recovery time and avoid any heavy contact sports. It is very common for a patient to receive a minimum of two Sclerotheraphy treatment sessions several week apart to greatly improve the appearance of the leg veins. BHT

Runway Perfect By Nataliya Joy Prieto

Me & the GIRLS... THE Beverly Hills Womenʼs Club part-

nered with Marinello Schools of Beauty for Aviva Day where 40 “at-risk” girls had a day of beauty and inspiration. Aviva is a court appointed, accredited group living facility and high school for girls 12 to 18 who are escaping abusive homes that courts removed them from. Most come to Aviva with only the clothes on their backs. The Marinello Schools of Beauty provided hair and make-up for the teens, and gift bags with back packs, hoodies, skin, hair care products, socks, pajamas, robes, etc. Find out more about Aviva and how you can help: www.avivacenter.org. Art For The Heart by Mandara Takowsky Marilyn: The Exhibit !

Returns to The Hollywood Museum AUGUST is the 52nd anniversary of Marilyn Monroeʼs

passing and her legend lives with no chance of diminishing with time. She was and still is a superstar; an undisputed iconic symbol of glamour and beauty. So for those of you who canʼt get enough of Marilyn Monroe (most of us) get ready because Marilyn: The Exhibit has returned to the The Hollywood Museum in a showcase if glitz and glam with an extraordinary look into the fabled actressʼ life and legacy. All eyes are set to be on the exclusive exhibit of authentic “MM” memorabilia that retrospectively spans her early life as Norma Jeane all the way to her Hollywood megastar status. This is a showcase unlike any other with several of her gorgeous gowns, items from her personal wardrobe, intimate and glamorous pieces of her jewelry, her 1961 Fleetwood Cadillac limousine — which was given to her as a gift from Darryl Zanuck, a vast photograph collection, personal documents from her private files and

so many of Marilynʼs personal artifacts. “Year after year fans never fail to honor Marilynʼs life and memory,” said Museum President and Founder Donelle Dadigan. “The Hollywood Museum is pleased to host this annual Marilyn retrospective in memoriam. This museum is considered the perfect home for this exhibit since it was here that Max Factor originally designed Marilyn's on-screen hair and coloring, transforming her into the sexy blonde we know and love,” says Dadigan. “When you walk into the ʻFOR BLONDES ONLY ROOM,ʼ you feel Marilyn Monroeʼs presence.” Marilyn: The Exhibit houses the one and only milliondollar dress worn by Marilyn on her honeymoon with baseball legend, Joe DiMaggio. The dress became famous when Marilyn went on a USO tour to entertain 10,000 troops in

Korea. Also included Marilynʼs pink Pucci top of striking hot pink silk jersey, Springolator high heels, cocktail dress she bought at the start of her career, a Playboy spread and bustier, and the Decadron vial found at Marilynʼs bedside at the time of her death and photographs by famed photographers Milton Greene and Douglas Kirkland. The Hollywood Museum spans 100 years of Hollywood history, featuring four floors of exhibits — and is home to more than iconic 10,000 items. The Hollywood Museum is located in the Historic Max Factor Building in the heart of Hollywood. 1660 N. The Rising Star Of

Ofir Engel

SPARKLING with artistic expression, the voice of an angel and super-charged showmanship, the experience of Ofir Engel

is a delightful mix of music and dance that is garnering her rave reviews and a passionate fan following. “Ofir” in Hebrew means GOLD and her “Passion Show” performances are a precious avant-garde adventure reminiscent of the extravagant productions of Busby Berkeley, the accomplished Hollywood film director and musical choreographer. In 2004, Ofir sent audiences reeling when she exploded onto the music and dance scene in a “Song of the Year” competition. Her entry, “The Passion Show” was a triumph hit capturing the attention of music industry higher-ups who presented her with the International Songwriting Award from VH-1, and her song, “Task of Mind” won over the competition in the “Best Dance Song” category. Ofirʼs CDʼs; ”The Passion Show”, “Poetry of the Brilliant Silence”,” and The Passion Show Remix” have continued to bring down a rain of praise from music insiders and critics alike and career highlights have included performances at The White House, on X-Factor and she released her fourth CD, “Task of Mind/Fire Escape” at a star studded event featuring Ozzy Osbourne, Mark McGrath, Paulie Puerette and Tippy Hedren. Her songs, “Higher” and “Sound of the Jewish Soul” (Foreign Language) are nominated for two Grammys in 2015. “The Jewish people from the beginning of time have endured great adversities and pain. The call to God has kept the journey focused upon our faith, and the path has never detoured from our spiritual beliefs. The "Sound of the Jewish Soul" is the solace and cleansing of torment to those who passed from this life by unthinkable means, and is an anthem to future generations that your inheritance is rooted in strength, determination and the chosen divination of our birthright. My song "Sound of the Jewish Soul" is recorded in Hebrew but crosses all language barriers as the listener is swept away with the feelings of love, tradition and universal spirituality.” Besides her mastery of music, Ofirʼs flair for entertainment can be seen with numerous appearances on MTV-LA with Mike McCary (Boyz to Men), Angel Show, Jeff Probst Show, Jeffrey Henderson Show, and vast attention from her music video, “Outrageous” featured on the TV Guide website. On Ofirʼs 2014 wish list: nothing less than an appearance on the Jimmy Kimmel Show. Ofir studied acting at the Actors Studio in New York and at the William Asper School of Arts. Acting credits include James Grayʼs “The Yards”, “Sex and the City” “Marshal Law” with Densel Washington, “Insatiable”, “Tragedy of Mother and Son”, ”The Lovers”, “Checkmate” and “Preying for Mercy” a film by acclaimed Director Bill Duke to name a few. “I love the entertainment business and music has been a favorite and inspirational part of my life. To be successful today isn’t the bar I aspire to that would be ordinary. My mission is to be listened to, to inspire, to educate and one day be enjoyed by generations not yet created. It seems in my journey I am always taking steps to assist the disadvantaged and less fortunate as I climb to higher achievements in my career. It’s in doing these things I feel my most soulful experiences. I have traveled along a creative path with my heart set on healing the pains of others and instilling personal pride into the souls of humanity.” When not performing or in the studio, Ofir serves as the Executive Vice President at the Sinatra Entertainment group in Los Angeles. Their goal she says is to offer the world quality and meaningful movies, television programming and music. To help accomplish the task they have assembled professionals with combined and vast experiences in network, movie and television development that have produced renowned music projects in the marketplace. “We don't concur with the destructive path attaching itself as an unethical leach upon our children. We are the arc of salvation in the entertainment industry and strive to be inclusive to the dreamers, thinkers and creators of epic projects. The method of my destiny stays etched in my commitment to the community, our world and to enjoying life with sincerity and be a positive role model.” Ofirʼs talent, beauty, energic appeal and ravishing personality make her a headliner whose gentle soul and heart for giving keeps her center stage. Upcoming performances are the 2015 Walk from 9/11 Concert Tour to give awareness to the death of over 1,400 9/11 First Responders; a Welcome Home Main Street Parade for returning troops and headlining at the 2014 California Dreaming Fashion Show benefiting the Miller Children's Hospital on July 18, 2014 at 333 S.
