Designing for a Parade

Cirque Du Rocky Top The University of Tennessee was lucky to be visited by the renown Wayne White. He is a painter, sculptor, and puppet-maker, and has been featured in a film about his art. The film, Beauty is Embarrassing, held a screening on the UT campus, and the creation of the promotional poster was at the hands of UT’s designers. I immediately began creation of a Wayne White poster by creating an illustration of his face in a style that was suggestive of his own. The illustration was accepted by a majority of my peers. The final rendition of the poster was a collaboration of Illustration by myself, and text by Jessica Johnson.

My satisfaction with the poster, along with the excitement of the visiting artist led to the creation of a large-scale Wayne White mask. This was created using cardboard and acrylic paints, and was a collaborative effort by my brother, Zared, and myself. What later followed was the creation of a banner for the Cirque du Rocky Top—the homecoming parade for the University of Tennessee--in which the School of Art worked together on producing a float known as the BearCat. The BearCat was derived from the song Rocky Top, in which it mentions a girl in the mountains who was “half bear, the other half cat.”

The School of Art United As the parade approached, even more large cardboard heads were created by the print team, as well as by my brother and I. In collaboration, the print and design team walked down the Universities streets guiding the BearCat. The amount of effort placed into preparing for that week was quite miraculous, to say the least, and the product reflects that. The designers who ended up taking place in the Parade were Kyoko, Josie, Zared, and myself, all adorned with hillbilly masks, and banners in hand, each of us proudly representing the design program at the University of Tennessee.
