COLUMBUS CROSSING BORDERS On view February 3 through April 7, 2018 Great Gallery

Columbus Crossing Borders Project, a travelling art exhibition. Through partnership with Community Refugee and Immigration Services, the audience is given an intimate look into the arduous journeys of refugees who are willing to share their stories through art. Fueled by these stories, the thirty-four artists of this project worked as a cooperative community, having been challenged to 'cross the borders' into each other’s paintings. The result is a visual collage served up as tribute to the resilience, the strength of spirit, and the devotion to loved ones that sustains those who have lived through such hardship.

THE CHARACTER OF MEXICO 195 9-196 0: WORKS BY DR. CHARLES DIETZ On view Februar y 11 through August 11, 2018, Linn Auditorium

Many people know Dr. Charles Dietz as the Director of the Zanesville Art Institute or the Zanesville Art Center (subsequently renamed the Zanesville Museum of Art) from 1954 to 1995. Dietz was also an accomplished artist who took a sabbatical from the museum from 1959 to 1960 to focus on his painting career. This exhibition explores the artist’s brief trip to Mexico and the tremendous impact its cultural landscape had on his work.

decades ago. The work’s vibrant color palette, bold forms, and dynamic composition provide an intimate exploration of Dietz’s evolving interest in abstraction. A versatile artist who worked with a variety of media including oils, gouache, watercolor, and ink, Dietz transformed the mountains, lakes, and valleys of the Mexican landscape

THE COLLECTION Co n s e r v i n g Two Po r t ra i t s by Ja m e s Pi e rce B a r to n For over 150 years, the portraits of Henry and Amelia Blandy, by Zanesville artist James Pierce Barton (1817–1891), belonged to the Blandy and Blount families. Today, thanks to the generosity of Mrs. Viola Blount, these beautiful portraits are now part of the ZMA’s permanent collection, and are featured in the newly reinstalled Shirley Gorsuch Gallery, located on the

Before the paintings came to the ZMA; however, they were sent to Galloway Art Conservators in Cleveland, Ohio, where founder and senior conservator, Heather Galloway reviewed the works’ condition and determined both needed to be cleaned. Over the decades, the surface of the two Blandy portraits accumulated layers of dust and grime, which dulled the painting’s surface. Galloway performed general housekeeping of each work. Originally applied to protect the painting’s surface and to provide a lustrous appearance, as varnish ages, it can have the oppoto turn yellow or brown. Using simple organic solvents and solutions, Galloway painstakingly removed the varnish, allowing Barton’s original color palette and the works’ subtle details to emerge again. Notice how the Amelia Blandy portrait is transformed after conservation. The subtle tonal variations of her face and her lace collar appear more

During the conservation process, Galloway also discovered that the size of each of the canvases was altered. The portrait of Amelia Blandy was, at one time, larger, and although the portraits are now housed in oval frames, at one point, the painting of Henry Blandy would have been displayed in a rectangular frame. It is likely that in the late which was common practice during the period. CLOSER LOOK The painting, Count Fugger, by the Flemish artist Paulus Moreelse (1571–1638) is now on view in the newly reinstalled Shirley Gorsuch Gallery. Depicting Otto Heinrich Fugger, Count of Kirchberg and Weissenhorn, a wealthy 16th- and 17th- century German banker (1592–1644), this intricately painted work was purchased by ZMA founder Mr. Edward Ayers. Moreelse often portrayed his sitters’ clothing in exquisite detail. Notice, for example, the beautiful gold design on Fugger’s black velvet jacket and the intricate texture of his lace collar. Known as early-seventeenth-century fashion and denoted wealth and status. It was an extravagant article of clothing, constructed from ten yards of a sumptuous lace hand-crafted in Northern Belgium.
