This spring, I would like to welcome you to view our new suite of exhibitions, share in a few of our exciting programs, and attend one of our most entertaining annual initiatives—the Beaux Arts Club’s gala, Art in the Garden. Several of the museum’s galleries have undergone exciting transformations over the winter months in preparation for new exhibitions opening this spring. The ZMA’s three hallways have been converted from ordinary thoroughfares into extraordinary exhibition galleries with the financial support of a private donor and the Sherwin-Williams Company. We’ve invested in new energy-efficient, state-ofthe-art lighting, applied fresh coats of paint, and installed new artworks from our permanent collection. Join me for a special discussion of this transition and the new work on view Thursday evening, May 4, 2017, at 6:15 pm, in the Linn Auditorium. Opening April 29 in the works on paper gallery is Ukiyo-e | Masters of Tradition. This exhibition, culled from the museum’s outstanding collection of Japanese woodblock prints, features colorful and dramatic ukiyo-e prints dating from the Edo Period (1603–1868), and illustrates a unique historical time in Japanese culture. The ZMA, in partnership with American Association of University Women, presents the annual Muskingum County K−12 Student Art Exhibition, which opens Sunday, April 30. This annual exhibition features hundreds of artworks created by this county’s exuberant and gifted student artists. We are delighted to announce that this year, The Community Bank has generously agreed to support the Avant-Garde Award cash prizes, which provide student award recipients $50 and one extraordinary art educator $1,000. And save the date June 24 and 25, 2017, for our much-anticipated Gala and Garden Tour. Spend an evening among friends, enjoy dinner, wine, and purchase beautiful works by some of this region’s most celebrated artists during the live and silent auctions. The following day, spend a beautiful afternoon meandering through six magnificent, well-appointed gardens and view the splendor this season has to offer. I look forward to seeing you at the museum soon.

CO N T E N TS

Sincerely, Laine Snyder

Musk ingum Count y K–12 Student Ar t Exhibition In Partnership with the American Association of University Women On view April 30 through May 20, 2017 This spring, the Zanesville Museum of Art honors the artistic achievements of regional art students and instructors with the 2017 Muskingum County K-12 Student Art Exhibition. This highly anticipated annual exhibition features work by Muskingum County students from public and private schools, home-schooled students, and local art-education organizations. Nearly two hundred two– and threedimensional works of art are showcased in this exhibition each year including paintings, drawings, sculpture, ceramics, photographs, and mixed media. The works on display in this year’s exhibition, which were created during the 2016–2017 academic year, include a dynamic range of subjects and styles. This diversity is a result of the commitment demonstrated by this county’s art educators who guide their students’ artistic exploration to help them develop a richer and deeper understanding of art. The ZMA and AAUW are proud to host Michael Voll, teen program coordinator for the Columbus Museum of Art, as this year’s exhibition juror. The ZMA, AAUW, the City of Zanesville Mayor’s Office, and The Community Bank will celebrate student artistic achievement by awarding outstanding works of art and one outstanding Muskingum County art educator the museum’s Avant-Garde Award. Student award winners will receive $50, and the art educator award winner will receive $1,000. Avant-Garde Awards are generously sponsored by The Community Bank and will be presented at 2 pm by Zanesville Mayor Jeff Tilton, AAUW organizer Ruth Sharrer, ZMA executive director Laine Snyder, and The Community Bank president Michael Steen. The AAUW will also provide four $10 honorable mention Avant-Garde awards.

SHAPESHIFTER | S ewn Construc tions by E lizab eth Brandt On view June 16 through September 2, 2017 This summer, the ZMA proudly presents an exhibition exploring the large-scale contemporary quilts by artist Elizabeth Brandt. Her mural-sized, machine-stitched works, which will be exhibited alongside smaller studies, illustrate the balance struck between dynamic forms and bold colors. Raised in Kettering, Ohio, Brandt attended the Center for Creative Studies in Detroit. It was the book by Ohio quilt artist Nancy Crow that inspired Brandt to begin her third career as a quilt artist in 2007. “I was amazed at the visual impact of her work,” stated Brandt, “but I had no idea of how to start making my artwork. I wondered how to create from scratch without any parameters.” At the Timber Frame Barn Workshop in Baltimore, Ohio, Brandt found harmony between Crow’s method of teaching improvisational art and her own decade-long practice at a Zen center. “For me, Buddhism is not a religion with set beliefs, but a science of constant observation and questioning,” stated Brandt. “One learns to pay very close attention to what is happening from moment to moment and the resulting cascade of effects. This ability to continually bring my mind back from its wanderings is invaluable when creating art or just when trying to live my life fully. Meditation retreats and art-making retreats with Nancy Crow are similar in terms of intensity, focus, and the continual quest for going beyond the known.” Brandt is delighted to exhibit at the Zanesville Museum of Art. “This part of Ohio has a special place in my heart,” she stated. Her father was born and raised in Athens, and as a child, she visited Zanesville and the surrounding areas during family vacations. Left: Detail, Elizabeth Brandt, Shapeshifter, 2016. ROBERT AND LEONA FELLERS GALLERY Student Exhibitions The ZMA eagerly partners with area schools and organizations to feature the creativity of student artists in the Robert and Leona Fellers Gallery, located on the museum’s third floor. The Fellers were pillars of the Zanesville community, supporting the arts and encouraging art education at the museum. As an artist herself, Leona Fellers exhibited work in the Ohio Annual exhibition, and she would be proud that this gallery celebrates this region‘s aspiring student artists.

UKIYO -E | M asters of Tradition On view April 29, 2017 through April 14, 2018 This spring, the ZMA’s works on paper gallery will feature Japanese woodblock prints from the museum’s permanent collection. These colorful and dramatic prints, called ukiyo-e, which translates to pictures of the floating world, illustrate a unique time in Japanese culture. The emergence of these prints corresponded with great social change in Japan. Years of war and economic strife during the AzuchiMomoyama Period (1573–1603) gave way to prosperity during the Edo Period (1603–1868). The emergence of a wealthy merchant and middle class coincided with new forms of popular entertainment and ukiyo-e prints that symbolized a vital culture. During the Edo Period, printers and publishers catered to the nouveau riche and mass-produced images featuring scenes from classic stories and the natural world. Cherry blossoms were a popular motif in woodblock prints, and these delicate blooms symbolized joy and the transience of earthly beauty. Cherry Blossom at Genji’s Rokujô Mansion, dating from1854 and created by Utagawa Kunisada I (1786-1864), is based on a scene from The Tale of Genji, authored by noblewoman Murasaki Shikibu in the eleventh century. In this work, as the Third Princess steps onto the veranda to find her black and white cat, she catches the eye of the broken hearted Prince Genji. The blushing princess sees the prince under the cherry blossom tree. The popularity of ukiyo-e prints spread beyond Japan’s borders after they were featured at the 1886 Exposition Universelle in Paris, France. Ukiyo-e prints are a small but significant part of the ZMA’s works on paper collection.

THE COLLEC TION|

New Additions

This fall, the ZMA accessioned a number of works into the museum’s permanent collection, including four pieces that enhance the painting and works on paper collections. The paintings of Ohio artists Ron Kroutel and Moses P. Pearl depict the tension between Ohio’s natural and industrial landscapes. In the nineteenth century, Ohio’s population and its industrial economy grew. As a leader in steel and iron production and in coal mining, the Buckeye State also made significant advances to its transportation infrastructure in order to move this material, extending the railroad, enhancing its bridges, and creating the Ohio-Erie Canal. Remnants of Ohio’s former economic glory are evident today in the abandoned industrial structures that populate the Ohio landscape. It is the unique interface between nature and industry that unite Kroutel’s and Pearl’s artwork. In Five Ribs and The Inner Heart, 1965, Cleveland artist, Moses P. Pearl captured the demolition of the Central Armory in Cleveland, Ohio. Built in 1893 by Cleveland architects Lehman and Schmitt, this building housed units of the National Guard and was used for mass meetings and exhibitions like the Cleveland Industrial Exposition of 1909. In Pearl’s large and deftly painted watercolor, the demolition of this iconic building serves as a metaphor for Ohio’s changing economic landscape and the dismantling of its industrial past. Ron Kroutel’s paintings also portray the uneasy relationship between topography and industry, but it is the unique southeastern Ohio landscape that inspires this body of work. There is an unsettling coexistence between colossal industrial structures and the simple urban bungalow-style home in the artist’s large-scale landscape painting House/Coal Shed, 2007. Ominous smokestacks and an inhospitable factory encroach upon the hilly landscape. Kroutel’s acrid, yellow color palette reflects the oppressive air conditions of southeast Ohio, color choices influenced by, “the humidity, the rank smell of weeds, the unwholesome effluvia of decaying matter in the woods, and the sweet smell of pollen in the spring,” stated Kroutel. Because of coal mining, a dominant industry in southeastern Ohio, there exists an “intensity between the natural world and societal development, as the weight of smoke, coal, and people slowly put us on edge, an almost Alfred Hitchcockian threat,” stated Kroutel. The only escape from this ominous world the artist allows the viewer is a glimpse of the sun-filled sky. The equally unsettling, somber, and powerful painting Hocking River/Bridge, 2007, is also about the relationship imbalance between industry and humanity. The river captured in this painting is a tributary of the Ohio River, one that transported coal from the Hocking Valley coal reserves to Cleveland—Ohio’s industrial center. Large, modern structures like the bridge, pine trees, and what looks like abandoned homes are reoccurring motifs in many of Kroutel’s works from 1985 to around 2008. When layered together in his paintings, the compositional elements create an inhospitable, dystopian place that conveys dislocation. Clockwise from the top: Ron Kroutel, House/Coal Shed, 2007, oil and oil bar on linen, 36 inches x 68 inches. Gift of Mr. Ron Kroutel. 2016.005.002.
