| Landsc ape Paintings by K arl K appes

On view through August 12, 2017

American Impressionism had on Kappes’s paintings from 1912 through 1943. Fascinated by the Ohio landscape, Kappes immersed himself in its picturesque scenery capturing the charm with the perfect setting in which to capture the natural light and shadows of the American landscape using thick, expressive brushstrokes.

On view through April 14, 2018 The ZMA works on paper gallery now features a series of Japanese woodblock prints from the Edo Period (1603-1868). The bold imagery, rich colors, and dynamic patterning found in these

On view through September 2, 2017 This summer, the ZMA presents large-scale contemporary quilts by artist Elizabeth Brandt. Her mural-size, machine-stitched works, which will be exhibited alongside smaller studies, illustrate the balance struck between dynamic forms and bold colors. Raised in Kettering, Ohio, Brandt attended the Center for Creative Studies in Detroit. It was the book by Ohio quilt artist Nancy Crow that inspired Brandt to begin her third career as a quilt artist in 2007. This exhibition is included as one stop among many included on the Quilt National ‘17 Quilt Crawl, which runs through September 2, 2017. The ZMA is the proud to welcome back the Southeastern Ohio Watermedia Society (SEOWS) for its fortieth annual juried exhibition, which highlights the exceptional work created using various water-based media, including watercolor, collage, acrylic, ink, and tempera. SEOWS one members with artists representing Muskingum, Washington, Coshocton, Guernsey, Belmont, Perry, and Monroe counties. | For Children 15 months–4 years

JumpstART is a fantastic program for preschoolers and parents that meets the second Friday of each month. Expose your toddler to the exciting world of art. Each session is unique. Experiment with new materials, discover art-making techniques, and explore hidden treasures in the ZMA’s galleries. Fridays, July 14, August 11, and September 8, 10:30–11:30 am, at the ZMA. Free for members and not-yet-members. Recommended for ages 15 months–4 years. Registration required. SHAPESHIFTER JUL 14 Discover the bright, bold quilt designs in Shapeshifter | Sewn Constructions by Elizabeth Brandt and then create your own colorful collage.

AUG 11 TEXTURE STONES Tour the ZMA galleries and learn how artists use texture to create exciting pieces, and then create a set of texture stones out of air-dry clay. SEASONS SEP 8 Explore the ZMA grounds with your preschooler and enjoy the wonders of autumn; then create a festive fall masterpiece.

ART VOYAGERS | For Children Grades K–3 Become a ZMA Art Voyager, and begin your art adventure! Each month children in grades kindergarten through third will travel through Voyagers passport. Each stamp gets you one step closer to a secret treasure. Saturdays, July 15, August 12, September 9, 10:30–11:30 am, at the ZMA. $5 per session for members, $7 not-yet-members. All materials and a painting apron provided. Recommended for grades K–3. Registration required.

Gee’s Bend, Alabama

Visit the small town of Gee’s Bend, Alabama, and discover the deeprooted tradition of quilting as an expressive art form. Become inspired by the wide variety of shapes, colors, and patterns, and create your own mixed media collage.

Journey to India and investigate the dramatic poses of the Hindu deities Shiva and Vishnu. Learn how to create action Nataraja, the lord of dance!

Visit rural Ohio’s not-so-distant past, and see how artists depicted the Buckeye state. Learn how painters like Paul Patton translated their favorite memories and pastimes onto canvas, and create your own masterpiece inspired by your hometown.

Investigate the artistry of Frederick Hurten Rhead, a designer at Weller and Roseville Pottery and the creator of Fiesta Ware. Work with tools and techniques to carve your own designs into plaster.

| Zanesville Teens Making Art

Become a part of this exciting art-making program for teens. Participants of ZTMA will collaborate with artist mentors, develop social networks with other creative teens, make art individually for their portfolios, and create art collaboratively for community-wide projects. Each month, teens in grades seven through twelve will meet to organize, plan, create, and execute a joint artistic project. Open studio time will also be available to ensure project completion. Thursdays, September 14, September 28, October 12, and October 26, 4:30–6:30 pm, at the ZMA. Free for members. $15 for a yearly student museum membership for not-yet-members. Free student memberships are available. Contact Misty Johnson for more information. No experience required. Recommended for teens grades 7–12. Registration required by September 7.

Chain Link Fence Mural Experiment with unique materials to create a stunning, large-scale image on a chain link fence in Downtown Zanesville. Become inspired by public artists around the world like Soo Sunny Park, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, and Robert Smithson. Use your imagination to transform your community into a spectacular work of public art.

Both days you and the entire family will enjoy art activities, handsand the ZMA’s Children’s Art Tent is free and open to the public. ADULT PROGRAMS GUIDED GALLERY SKETCH HOUR | First Saturday of the Month day of each month in one of the museum’s eighteen galleries and sketch one of the many wonderful works of art on view at the museum. Saturdays, July 1, September 2, October 7, 10–11 am, at the ZMA. Free to museum members, $7 per session for not-yet-members. Drawing benches and boards are provided, or bring your favorite sketchbook or art journal from home. No experience required. Recommended for teens and adults. Register one week in advance. ART ON TAP | Social Creativity Hour Tap into your inner artist with the ZMA at Weasel Boy Brewing Company. Join local artist, Carrie Turner, the third Tuesday of the month for a Tuesdays, August 15, September 19, October 17, 6–7 pm. Free and open to the public. No experience required. All materials provided. This program is held at Weasel Boy Brewing Company, 126 Muskingum Avenue, Zanesville. No registration required.

REEL MEAL | Quiltmakers of Gee’s Bend Join the ZMA and our partners at Reel Meal, and view a documentary about the extraordinary African-American quilters from the rural, The New York Times described Shapeshifter | Sewn Constructions by Elizabeth Brandt, on view through September 2. Saturday, July 15, 6–8 pm. Free and open to the public. Donations to Reel Meal welcome. This program is held at Seiler’s Studio and Gallery, 129 S. Street, Zanesville. No registration required.

THE ADVENTUROUS PALETTE | Canvas and Cocktails with Nora Daniel Unleash your adventurous palette with Zanesville artist Nora Daniel. Bring a friend, enjoy a glass of wine, be inspired by art and creative company, and paint your own masterpiece. All materials, wine, and lite bites are included in the cost of this workshop.
