Zarith is a graduate of Tulane University with an Masters in Architecture and Bachelors in Art in French and French Literature. Her Master’s thesis, Engineered Paradises, has been featured in diverse publications and exhibits. Engineered Paradises has been on display at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art and the American Institute of Architects Washington D.C. Emerging Architects. She is also a recent graduate of the Graduate School of Planning and Preservation at Columbia University receiving a post professional degree in Architecture and Urban Design. Zarith’s work focuses on affective approaches to spatial program, more specifically the dimension of memory in the physical manifestation of architectural and urban spaces. As you have seen in this volume, her projects are compelled by narratives that suggest an immersion into the mind of the subject/user to better understand their desires. She is currently an associate adjunct professor at Columbia GSAPP. For more information on her work and publications visit: www.zarithpineda.com.

A Water Commons No Man’s Land: A Water Commons is a commentary on the displacement of the Syrian refugees in the north-eastern border zone between the Syrian and Jordanian berms. Rather than seeing the zone as a holding area, this proposal seeks to inhabit the berm and empower refugees by using fog harvesting, waste water

management,

permaculture

and

landscaping

techniques to create the possibility of an autonomous No Man’s Land. Through the harvesting of this scarce resource not only is a humanitarian crisis mitigated but it proposes to create a different strategy for organizing emergency migration and a long term ecological solution for Jordan’s water infrastructure. The project seeks to respond to a humanitarian crisis created by a political conflict. However, the conflict may remain keeping people in holding for the foreseeable future, a scenario that begs the question - could No Man’s Land turn into a future Megacity? Or if the conflict subsides and refugees are able to return home - will this area become a ruin? Perhaps, a memorial of a precarious moment in time.

The Compassionate Care Act legalized the use of medicinal marijuana in the State of New York and created an opportunity for a new industry and regional connection among counties. This has the opportunity to help the city of Poughkeepsie, which is struggling from a high city deficit, high poverty rates and a failing education system. The city was once a thriving industrial city that depended on the Fall Kill Creek as an energy source. Nowadays the city has expanded and became victim of urban renewal that left spatial and social injustice scars on the city. The once productive Fall Kill is now an unused polluted waterway suffering from the contamination from various communities within its watershed. By establishing medicinal marijuana grow houses along the creek, the city can leverage a lucrative water dependent industry to provide economic benefit, while purifying the creek. Uncovering the past golden age of Poughkeepsie can help strengthen the social pride of the city and re-activate the creek to provide educational and recreational opportunities.

A Nation Above Two Nations... The city of Hebron in the Occupied West Bank/Israel is shared by the nations of Palestine and Israel due to their respective claims of ownership over religious sites and territories. Hebron suffers from a unique condition of complex segregations through invisible and visible dimensions that greatly harm the quality of life of its citizens - an apartheid that creates great tension and distrust among them. Through the deployment of nationless ‘engineered paradises’ at the urban scale, the thesis aims to create a respite from the complex spacial formalities of life in the West Bank, constructing safe spaces connected through a network of elevated walkways that delineate a new nation of shared identit

. Witnessing Vulnerability as Means to Acceptance of the Other. \

Can we design for intangible affective program? Can architecture produce spaces that are compelling enough to allow for the emotional release of its users? The thesis proposes that in proving shared spaces whose programs are dedicated to the safe expression of universal emotions [such as; mourning, fatigue, love, embarrassment, solitude] between dissonant factions in conflict areas, users will be forced to confront the humanity of the ostracized other in hopes of catalyzing enough empathy for acceptance and eventual hopeful reconciliation.

the city towards the big stair towers. They rise above me as if they had been expecting me. But today I won’t climb the stairs, I’ll take the elevator. Once inside, I calm down. There’s no need to run anymore. I am where I need to be. The doors open revealing the cylinders. I can see the vapor inside their walls rising towards the sky. There are others in the sanctuaries but it doesn’t matter. No one talks to here. There are just people alone with their thoughts. Leaving their pain to be carried away by the vapor. I don’t have to be brave anymore here. I go into the smallest chamber sit on the bench and begin to cry. I cry because I wish my Ummi, my mamma, was still alive.

Blurring the lines between traditional theater and contemporary performance art, the audience becomes complicit in the act. An entire building is taken over by the troupe. The audience enters, inhabiting the same spacial envelope as the performers thus breaking down the “fourth wall that traditionally separates viewers from actors. In contrast to traditional theater, there is no designating area thus separating the two groups. In some companies, the audience members are signified by a mask doubling as concealment for the viewer’s identity. They are then encouraged by the players to split from their party and follow certain characters through the often labrythian set, whether guided simply by personal interest or physically by the outstretched hand of a player. This results in a unique experience of an overarching event. A personal narrative that can be understood as single perspective of the play which can then be enhanced by the differing narratives of the rest of a party. Usually taking place in a multistory building with separated chambers, events are unfolding simultaneously, in relation to one another in that they are parts of the whole (the body of the play) but out of sight and earshot of other scenes being acted out. Therefore, as a viewer, you are never omniscient of the entire story, your experience being singular. Upon return visits or through retellings by the other members of your party, you may become more aware but you are still only possessor of one set of eyes when engaged in the play. The path you take through the play is completely up to you but you have no more control over what clandestine activities you witness than a fly on a wall.

Master plan for Parisian college suburb Villetaneuse. The plan anticipates the expansion of the growing campus university model and lifestyle in France. As a pilot “college town,” the Villetaneuse proposes a sustainable model, of green spaces, walkable streets, bicycle routes, and low rise development. The plan sets the tone for the city’s next 50 years, focusing on the relationship between the Université Paris 13 to Paris and the north of France. Full master plan available upon request.

Building addition of five residential micro units between 330-600 sf. The addition carefully explores how to add a new program and scale to an existing historic context. The addition “completes the existing commercial building with micro apartments, a trend that is becoming widespread in residential design as a response to over-population and crowding in urban areas. The site neighbors a local college, reinforcing the programmatic single resident/small footprint concept. Full construction document set available upon request.
