Urban transparency by Zdenka Havlova University of Tokyo Kengo Kuma Laboratory Erieta Attali Photography Workshop 2014-12
intersections between the layers of city life
Tokyo is not a city that can be represented by a ground plan. It is not one-dimensional, you can’t grasp its identity by a schwarzplan. I search for the urban nodes, the intersections, where the vertical layers of the city meet and create tension. Urban transparency is the ability to see through and feel the different levels of city life, the pouring energies that clash and intertwine. These are connections, not divisions. Here you can feel the pulse of the city. People, subways, trains, cars, highway traffic, bullet trains. Do you always know what level you are on? Ground floor, basement or several floors up? Is there such a things as the ground floor anymore? Through these photographs, I set out to share the sensory perceptions of these places in Tokyo.
