Angela & Phil’s story... Claire & Laurence story... About a year ago Laurence commissioned Claire’s engagement ring using the diamond from his late mother’s ring and since then we have come to know and love this perfect couple. Their little dog, Bob comes along to all our events and particularly enjoyed his visit to Tylney Hall for a Petra Exclusive ‘Engaging Offer’ photo shoot and Afternoon Tea. The icing on the cake is that we’ve been invited to the wedding!
Phil has known Petra for many years and even used to have German lessons from her. Several years later we were delighted to be asked to make Angela and Phil’s wedding rings. Alistair, our extremely talented photographer, took their stunning wedding photos at the Hawk Conservancy in Andover.

Claire’s story... Poor Clare was burgled a few years ago and they took most of her jewellery. Miraculously she found an opal under the bed which must have been mistakingly left by the thieves. Claire’s husband Greg had the wonderfully romantic idea to use this opal make a pendant to match her beloved opal ring; one of a few special pieces remaining after a burglary.
Davina’s story... Davina lives with her husband Mark in Belgium and was recommended to come to Petra Jewellery by her best friend Tracey. So on her next visit back to the Uk she brought her jewellery box and booked a design appointment to see Mitch.
Greg brought it in and we designed a pendant to match the art deco style of Clare’s ring. We then commissioned our top mounter Derek to hand make the ring and our setter Marco to set the opal with some small diamonds to bring some sparkle to the design. The finished piece brought tears to all our eyes, not just Clare’s!
We had a chat about what Davina would actually wear – as there’s no point in having a new piece of jewellery made if that too is going to end up lying in your jewellery box. Davina had quite a bit of old gold so we picked the higher carat golds to make two new rings and re-cycled her diamonds from old rings too and created two contemporary and very ‘wearable’ new ring designs. The ‘leftover’ gold was melted down by our goldsmith Nick and made into a chunky solid gold bangle – something that will last a lifetime and also worth well over £2,000. Not a bad investment from both a sentimental and economic point of view.

A History of Hallmarking

ALL THAT GLITTERS IS NOT GOLD… Take a look inside your rings. What hallmarks do you see? And what do they mean? You might have a ‘gold’ or ‘platinum’ wedding band but do you know what the purity is? Your jewellery might actually contain less than 50% gold – and here’s why. In actual fact, precious metals are never used in their pure form to make jewellery. Other metals are added to create a mixture or ‘alloy’. This alters the properties of the metal, making it stronger, more workable and often more attractive in colour, resulting in beautiful pieces of jewellery, just like those we create at Petra every day! Let’s take a closer look at the technical bit. Your ring should have a ‘fineness’ mark inside it; this tells you its purity represented as a millesimal number. 18 carat gold for example is ‘18 parts out of 24’ gold, which stated as a percentage is 75%. So the fineness mark is ‘750’. Sponsor’s mark

Can you work out the fineness mark for a 9ct gold ring?
9ct gold is ‘9 parts out of 24 gold’, equating to 37.5% which is represented as a fineness of ‘375’. 9ct gold isn’t as malleable as 18ct, not as dense and much less yellow. You can guess what carat we prefer to work with to achieve a fine finish!
When you give us your old gold to make something new, we’ll take it to the London Assay Office (founded over 700 years ago!) where it will be tested and hallmarked. It will have our maker’s mark ‘PETRA’ inside it as well as the fineness and lion’s head symbolising its origin.
If your jewellery isn’t hallmarked we can establish whether it’s a precious metal by testing it and looking out for certain tell tale signs. If it’s an older item it may carry a date stamp and it can be great fun trying to date a ring and thinking about all the wonderful stories it could tell… The history of hallmarking is fascinating and the original aim remains unchanged; it’s your protection against fraud and our protection against unfair competition. We hope this has been an interesting little taster into the relevance of those curious marks inside your ring. We’re always keen to share our knowledge and help people understand the differences between metals; it’s really important you know what you’re getting.
