The trail meanders upwards along the sunny hillside of Costa and Ches Costes. Setting off from the Miara cable car valley station, fol-

The Tres la Val trail (Ladin for „along the valley“) starts in Mantena and leads all the way to Pederü along the bottom of the valley past San Vigilio, Ciamaor, Lé dla Creda, Fodara Masaronn and Tamersc. The total distance is about 14 km, but you are free to start off or stop anywhere along the route and continue by bus.

TRU DAL EGA THEME WALK (H: 3 hours)

From the Fanes Senes Braies Nature Park House, this trail will take you to where the village stream meets the Aqua Bad Cortina Hotel and on towards Pederü passing through C´iamaor. Running along the stream, it leads to the forty springs of Les Fontanes just outside Lé dla Creda. We absolutely recommend a short detour to the watercourse at the entrance of the C´iastlin valley, from where you can hike to Fodara Masaronn with its Ega de San Vi springs. Along the way, many fascinating stops show just how multi-faceted water is.

OUR SPECIAL SUGGESTION: TRU DLES LIONDES A highlight not to be missed: Setting off from the Aqua Bad Cortina Hotel on Strada Fanes, this instructive trail offers captivating insights into the tales and legends of the Fanes realm. Listen up, kids: The San Vigilio Tourist Office and the Nature Park House have a funny quiz waiting for you!

But the locals have helped shape the landscapes, too: Agricultural tradition and the First World War have left their mark on our surroundings. The Fanes Senes Braies Nature Park is filled to the brim with trails and places where the war once changed the look of rock and ice and where the ancient Dolomite tales come to life. THURSDAYS: FOLLOWING THE BEAR TRACKS Capanna Alpina – Col de Locia – Conturines cave – Capanna Alpina from 26/06 to 04/09/2014 8 am | 4 pm | Capanna Alpina approx. 7 hours | approx. 1000 m Description: From Capanna Alpina (1726 m), we hike along trail no. 11 towards the Fanes pastures. The bear cave (2800 m) is reached after a 4-hour walk across scree slopes. Background: In 1987, a climber exploring the Conturines mountains at 2800 m above sea level discovered a cave almost 200 m deep, and in it the skeletons of a prehistoric cave bear – a truly unique discovery in the Dolomites. Cave bears (Ursus spelaeus) became extinct some 40,000 years ago during the Last Glacial Maximum. They preferred a predominantly vegetarian diet to meat, a fact which suggests that they lived in slightly milder climate zones which caused the Alpine forests to spread to higher altitudes. the Dolomites had much more to do than just watch over the shrubs and rocks of their territory. SAN VIGILIO – LÉ DLA CREDA – PEDERÜ – SAN VIGILIO San Vigilio di Marebbe (church square) | approx. 2 hours 345 m | 23 km

SAN VIGILIO – VAL – COSTA – SAN VIGILIO

Description: Paved track with two short uphill slopes. Suitable for beginners. Setting off from the church square, turn right after a short uphill ride and then continue along the road towards Pederü for 6 km. Once you reach Fodara Masaronn, follow the new cycling path to Pederü. To go back, take the same route – this also gives you the option to shorten the trip by just turning round and cycling back.

Description: From the village centre, ride up to Al Plan dessora (Hotel Monte Paraccia) and on to the water reservoir. Continuing in a wide circle to the left, cycle to Torpei on the paved road. In Torpei, take a right (uphill) and cross the meadows (Noares) and the forest to Chi Vai (Miara slope). Cross the stream and continue to the hamlet Val dla Tor. Cycle around the right side of the woods and on to Costa. Wide bends lead downhill through the meadows to Ras, and from there back to San Vigilio.

Description: This route runs from San Vigilio all the way to the Fanes pastures past the Pederü refuge. From the Fanes pastures, it leads briefly uphill to Lé de Limo and with a slight slope across the larger Fanes valley, which is no doubt the most awe-inspiring high valley in the Alps, with Piz Taibun and Cima Scotoni making for an unforgettably picturesque backdrop. After a relatively level bit leading to Col de Locia, a very difficult trail descent runs to Capanna Alpina. Then it continues along an easy and slightly downhill slope to San Martino on the Badia valley cycling track.

Description: Setting off from the centre of San Vigilio, take the main road in the direction of Pieve Marebbe uphill to Passo Furcia (turning shortly behind the hamlet Curt/Corte). Just past the Hotel Jù Furcia, take a left and cycle uphill on the gravel road towards Kronplatz, first through the forest and then past the Panorama and Graziani mountain inns. Don‘t forget to take in some of the beautiful views of the highest Dolomite peaks and the giant glaciers of the Zillertal Alps! Descending, cycle first to Passo Furcia and then back to San Vigilio.

Description: Definitely one of Europe‘s most beautiful cycling tours: The Fanes-Senes route leads smoothly from San Vigilio along a narrow toll road up to the Pederü refuge within the Nature Park. After 13 km of only a slight uphill slope, a partly steep gravel road takes you to the cosy Fanes refuge and on to Lé de Limo. Continue descending along the rocky gravel road in the direction of Cortina d‘Ampezzo. Shortly before the Fiames car park, the road leads back up the Malga Ra Stua refuge and on to the Sennes mountain inn, set in a breathtaking backdrop of Dolomite rocks and peaks. After descending to the Fodara Vedla refuge and Pederü, the smooth trail back to San Vigilio across the forest is yet another deserved treat for tired cyclists. Lé de Rit 1800 Somamunt

AGRICULTURE Agriculture plays an important role in South Tyrol. The efforts of local farmers to conserve and protect our cultivated landscapes have also had a crucial effect on regional tourism. We therefore kindly ask our guests to treat the beauty of our nature and the hard work of our farmers with respect and care. A few basic rules can help you do so quite easily: There are a number of paths and trails available for strolls, hiking and cycling. Please stay on them and do not cross the nearby fields or meadows. Park your car carefully and without obstructing roads and paths or access to fields and agricultural/forestry structures and buildings. Dog owners should at all times make use of the available dog toilets. Please do not under any circumstances let your dog do its business in the fields and pastures – doing so is extremely harmful to the environment as the grass is used for grazing and as hay to feed cattle! Thank you for helping us protect our wonderful nature.

WE RECOMMEND If you are looking for a special souvenir or even just a piece of San Vigilio di Marebbe to take home with you, why not try some of the many mouth-watering South Tyrolean products? The Senni cooperative for example offers a wide range of produce made with milk from our mountain farms: fresh, unique and free from genetic engineering. Great taste and quality from our Alpine landscapes!
