Welcome
l-r Gillian Berry (nee Witt), Jackie Starr (nee Dunnell) , Eleanor Green (nee Sharpe) and Margaret Mc Kay (nee Holmes)
Four girls celebrating the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in Market Deeping. Did they ever give a thought to meeting up 70 years later to share their memories of that auspicious occasion? Well, courtesy of I’d rather be in Deeping magazine they did, and along with other contributors to this souvenir issue have provided an insight to life in what was still a rural community in the mid twentieth century. Between that point and now, we have lived in the reign of one sovereign and we are delighted to chronicle some of the events that are taking place in celebration of the service that she has given. Loyalty and duty have been the watchwords of her 70 years on the throne, qualities that are sometimes overlooked but should never be underestimated. God Save the Queen! Judy Stevens 3

Coronation Day in the Deepings 2nd June 1953 with Maggie McKay

FEATURE
It was just eight years after the end of the Second World War, and the country still in austerity, when the first opportunity for a big, life-affirming celebration manifested itself – the coronation of a new and beautiful young monarch! In villages and towns, up and down the country, young and old put their heads together to think of ways in which their communities could celebrate. Market Deeping and Deeping St. James each formed a committee and a programme was drawn up which comprised a church service in the morning, both at the Priory Church, Deeping St James, and at St Guthlac’s, Market Deeping, followed in the afternoon by a Grand parade with decorated floats (separate parades in Market Deeping and Deeping St James). There would then be a tug of war across the river between Market Deeping and Deeping Gate (at what is now the Riverside Park), followed by sports and a ‘cart-horse’ derby and, in the evening, a bonfire and fireworks display and a Coronation dance at the Coronation Hall.
There was much to be done in advance. In April the county council gave permission for the old fire engine to be used in the Coronation procession and a competition was held to choose a Coronation Queen. The winner was eighteenyear-old Julie Starr, of Halfleet, Market Deeping, with attendant Elisabeth Smith. Julie’s role on the day would be to ride in state on the leading float in the parade from Towngate to the Market Place, Market Deeping, and to open the dance in the Coronation Hall in the evening. Extra funds were needed to help defray the costs of the events too, so a cricket match was held in May RAF Langtoft and a team from continued >

FEATURE Deeping St James. And in all the villages the children and their mothers were engaged in thinking up and making fancy dress costumes. ‘The best-laid schemes o’ Mice an’ Men gang aft agley’, wrote Robert Burns. Well, the thing that threatened to sabotage the Coronation Day plans was that old unreliable, the British weather, which was wet and miserable. However, on this occasion nothing could dampen the high spirits or the determination of the population to enjoy themselves and celebrate. A few of the proposed outdoor activities, such as the sports, were postponed until later in the week but all the main events went ahead as planned. So, for the Deepings, the day began with a peal being rung on the bells of the Priory Church, Deeping St James, followed by a church service in each parish. At 1.30pm the parades took place. Deeping St James’ parade, starting from the Cross and ending in the Market Place, Market Deeping, was led by two of the Carr family’s horse-riding daughters, sixteen-year-old Pauline on Ruby, and fifteen-year-old Janet on Silver, dressed as Jacqueline Starr Heralds. The Market Deeping parade began at Towngate and terminated at the Market Place where people gathered to admire the floats and the costumes, which excited both admiration and considerable amusement, (Sid Hare, for example was marvelously dressed, if that is the word, as Lady Godiva). Prizes were awarded for best float and for best costume. Later in the afternoon, the tug of war across the river drew big crowds and cries of encouragement from Market Deeping and Deeping Gate

supporters. The Stamford Mercury (15th May 1953) warned that, ‘The (Deeping Gate) coach has such a sergeant-major’s voice that it is feared he will inadvertently train Market Deeping as well! The winning team would be awarded a token prize of ten shillings (that’s fifty pence!) handed over in the middle of the river by Mr. Frost, with the winner expected to “go to the watery rendezvous ‘on a white charger’”! Even The Daily Mirror had got wind of the event and quoted from the challenge by the men of Deeping Gate to the men of Market Deeping which said that they had ‘twelve men of goodly stature and muscular prowess, well-versed in the art of tuggery’. Market Deeping, answering the challenge, said that they too had twelve strong men ‘well able to win the tug of war’. Deeping Gate responded that their team would be chosen ‘for weight and toughness and for a willingness to get wet’! The Market Deeping team continued >

FEATURE countered that they were not considering the possibility of getting wet. Naturally, in the event, everyone got wet – there would have been great disappointment otherwise! The Market Deeping team won but, as pointed out, it had 888 men to choose from, while Deeping Gate had only 150. The ‘cart-horse Derby’ was held on dairy farmer John Eve’s field and the winner was sixteen-year-old Nobby Clark, (the £15 prize was quite substantial in 1953). The fireworks display, to be held in the paddock behind The White Horse, was postponed to later in the week, but the Coronation Ball was held and was a great success. Without doubt much fun and enjoyment was had throughout the whole day. Those of us alive today who experienced the Coronation were, of course, mostly very young at the time. What have been our memories of it? Well, these are some: Pauline Carr remembers the excitement of leading the parade, on horseback, from Deeping St. James. Jackie Starr remembers her pride when ‘grown-up’ sister Julie was chosen as Coronation Queen, and seeing her cousin, Carole Starr, dressed as Mrs Mop, presenting flowers to the winner of the float competition on the Market Place. Carole also presented the bouquet to the Coronation Queen after the service at St Guthlacs Church and posies were given to the attendants by Anne Stacey and Margaret Holmes. Gillian Witt remembers that she didn’t like, and didn’t want to wear, the red, white and blue crepe ‘rosette’ that her mother had made for her to go with her costume! (Preparations for ‘The Day’ were not always conflict-free!)
Eleanor Sharpe, who lived at Crown Lodge Farm, Deeping Fen, remembers that the family and their farmhands spent the day before the Coronation in polishing and decorating both the horse and cart which were to take part in the parade. It looked beautiful with all its streamers, and the decorated super-structure they had erected on it, Eleanor recalls. The only problem was that the decorated cart, now a coronation float, was too big to fit into their barn so had to stay out in the open overnight. During the night there was a terrible storm and when they came out to check on the float in the morning they found that their work had been destroyed and the float was a complete mess. ‘We could have wept,’ says Eleanor. “In fact I think we did.” All morning they worked to repair the damage. They succeeded but it wasn’t anything like as beautiful as it had been the day before, she says. I seem to remember looking out of a window at all the floats gathered on the island that was then in the Market Place, waiting to be judged, and people milling around. A more vivid memory of the day, though, is that it was the first time in my life that I saw television! The ‘Unique Shopping Centre’ (now the Antique Market) was the Deepings’ furniture shop at the time and, just for the Coronation, owner Walter Smith had lent out, and fixed up, television sets in the Coronation Hall where anyone could go and watch the ceremony in Westminster Abbey being broadcast, as it took place, from 10.00am onwards. This was truly thrilling and I believe I was not the only person for whom this was their first experience of television. Truly this was a most memorable day! Thanks to Joy Baxter for all her research in the archives on the event and to Eleanor, Jackie, Gillian, Pauline, Pat, Liz and Jill for, directly or indirectly, offering memories of the day, and photos.

The Queen of Hearts with Christine Bish
Early last year, I was contacted via the Country Women Countrywide (CWC) website by Bruno Peek, LVO, OBE, OPR, Pageantmaster responsible for the Platinum Jubilee Beacons. Recognising the strong farming link between CWC, its Farm Women’s Club (FWC) network, and the monarchy, Bruno invited our members to develop a dish which could be served at the lighting of the chain
of beacons on the first day of the Platinum Jubilee Celebrations. Of course, we accepted the challenge – and it was quite a challenge as there were some well defined criteria. The key ones were: to include an ingredient from each of the four UK countries; served on a platter and cut ‘ceremonially’; able to be eaten outdoors without cutlery; look spectacular; not a cake and, of course, be fit for a Queen. After several bakings, tastings and tweaks, the final recipe for The Platinum Jubilee Beacon Tart was agreed. But there was one challenge we had not met – a single tart, on a platter, did not look spectacular! Undaunted, and after more thought and discussion, we overcame this with an arrangement of seven tarts, each representing a decade of The Queen’s reign; each one could be cut into ten slices, one for each year of Her Majesty’s reign. (see photo) Certainly a more spectacular and significant dish than a single tart on a platter! Bruno’s vision is that at civic events this seven-tart version will be served following the ceremonial lighting of the beacons. We were happy – we had met the challenge and just needed to wait until 2 June, make our own tarts, join in with beacon lightings in our neighbourhood at 9.45 pm and begin the weekend of celebrations. But then, out of the blue, an invitation arrived for two people to attend a Reception at The Tower of London to welcome
22
the arrival of the Commonwealth of Nations Globe which will be used in the lighting of the principal beacon at Buckingham Palace. As fellow member Jean Stephens from Hampshire FWC, originator of the recipe, was an obvious choice and as I had been liaising with Bruno Peek throughout, it was decided that Jean and I should represent CWC and FWC at the event which took place on 14 April. We had no idea what to expect but with all the pomp and ceremony which befits a Royal Palace it was an honour to witness the arrival and presentation of the specially commissioned and hugely significant Commonwealth of Nations Globe. Every single aspect of the Globe and the crown in which it sits relates to a memorable milestone of Her Majesty’s reign. (see photo) Coronation – represented by the cushion that supports the State Crown Silver Jubilee – silver Crown representing the Queen’s Silver Jubilee and map of the Commonwealth countries on the blue Globe Golden Jubilee – cord, tassels and golden inlay in the Crown Diamond Jubilee – diamonds set within the Crown Platinum Jubilee – map of the UK countries set in platinum on the Globe Stones – collected from the top of the four highest peaks and set into the Crown to signify the coming together of the four nations of the UK

How could we have imagined that a simple recipe baked, tasted and tweaked in farmhouse kitchens around the country could open the door to such a historic, significant and unique event? What a privilege to be invited. * The Commonwealth of Nations Globe will be on display in The White Tower at The Tower of London until 2 June. * Close up of the Globe can be viewed at https:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZJSGqeAYC8
* The background to its origins and the Tart recipe and serving suggestion is published on pages 8 and 29 respectively of the latest update of the www. queensjubileebeacons.com/guide * Country Women Countrywide is a FREE TO JOIN online community linking women who live or work in the countryside or who have an interest in rural life. It is the home of the county-based Farm Women’s Clubs, a friendship club which was founded in 1948. National, regional and local events take place
regularly in addition to maintaining contact online. The Peterborough Group meets on the 1st Tuesday of each month. Visit www.countrywomen.co.uk or email countrywomencountrywide@gmail.com to find out more.

CORONATION DAY IN DSJ
Coronation Day Memories of Margaret Flegg Margaret Flegg (née Goodliffe) remembers: ‘I was 8 years old, my older sister Mavis was 11 and my brother Brian was just 5 months old .The day was cold and wet which didn’t bode well as my mother had made me a red, white and blue crepe paper fancy dress as a Hawaiian girl. Mavis was dressed as a waitress complete with a chrome tray. We walked from Horsegate to Bridge Street to get on to waiting lorries to parade round the village but the effect was marred as unfortunately we had to have sheets to keep the rain off. A friend was dressed as “Off The Ration” which was very much of the time – she had sweets sewn on her dress and a shoulder bag made out of a Dairy Box of chocolates. It really looked good but remember I was 8 at the time! Later in the day Dad took us
for a ride round a few villages where people had built fires especially on the prominent sites. A few areas were a bit higher and I remember going up to Thurby before you get to the woods. My brother had his first taste of a soft toffee which my mother had in a tin with a picture of the Queen on the front. Funny, the things you remember. I also remember going to a Barn Dance in the Cross School. The doors were opened between Mrs Hibbitt’s and Mr Burchnell’s classes which made a very large room. It was thoroughly enjoyable; I can’t remember who provided the music but it went down very well.’

‘People with earth energy have a huge sense of loyalty and responsibility. They are grounded, motherly and persistent. They always have hidden willpower and are tenacious. I think that these are all qualities we see in the Queen.’
About 27 years ago, I met a guy called Rex Lassalle who was to become both a mentor and a friend. He taught me an ancient oriental philosophy called Nine Star Ki. This model gives insights about our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual well-being that can help us to plot a harmonious path through our lives. As it is the Jubilee, I thought it would be an interesting thing to take a look at the Nine Star Ki analysis for HM the Queen. Please note that when I do a full analysis, it takes an hour to share it with a client so this is a very shortened version but it shows interesting traits. We start by looking at her childhood. The Queen’s dominant energy as a child was fire. Think about what fire does – it gives light, it draws attention and it creates joy. The fire child would love to be surrounded by beautiful colours and
jewellery and be the centre of attention. I would bet also that she brought much love and joy into her world. Interestingly, fire energy looks after the heart. The heart is seen as the emperor of the body so her childhood fire energy would easily be interpreted preparation for the role of monarch in later life. The Queen’s adult energy transforms into earth energy. People with earth energy have a huge sense of loyalty and responsibility. They are grounded, motherly and persistent. They always have hidden willpower and are tenacious. I think that these are all qualities we see in the Queen. The final element that is important for the Queen is water. This comes as a balancing energy for times of stress or as a way of being in tune with your greater essence. If you are in tune with this balancing energy then you will be operating in a wise way that is true to your essence.
Having this water energy for wisdom and balance, we know that for the Queen, everything comes back to deep spirituality. The title ‘Defender of the Faith’ is not just words to her. Her whole being is geared up towards being able to connect quietly to her own spirituality and express it through the way that she commands her own life. When we take this matrix of energies and look at them together, we gain yet more insights. This is part of the art of nine star Ki. We have a combination of fire, earth and water for our monarch. What images do those words evoke for you? Perhaps sunshine on earth surrounded by water. Sounds a bit like the British Isles to me. If you would like to learn more about Nine Star Ki or have a complete reading, please contact me via email ray@ki-ways.co.uk or give me a ring on 07413 620344 www.ki-ways.com 35

Motoring in the early 1950s
VEHICLES OF THE 50’S
with David Brown
While the motor industry struggled to get going again post-WW2, it was the early 1950s when motoring was really re-established. Petrol rationing, introduced in September 1939, finished in 1950 – celebrated with long queues at petrol stations – but was back for a spell later in the decade when Nasser nationalised the Suez Canal. Road standards generally were improving and there was talk of motorways, but these took longer to be established. Many people drove second-hand pre-war cars such as Ford’s first Dagenham-designed model the Model Y, introduced in 1932. Before that Ford had built British versions of American vehicles at Trafford Park, Manchester. Other small family favourites included the Morris Eight Series E and Ten Series M, produced 1938-48, likewise the Standard Eights. There was a degree of making do with what was available, but there was room for improvement.
The Morris Minor Traveller estate car with structural wood framing – ideal for travelling salesmen but also great for going on picnics!
The Morris Minor
Car companies were not modest about their vehicles as with this advert from Morris for ‘The World’s Supreme Small Car’.
The original Minor MM Saloon and Tourer models were produced between 1948 and 1953, joined by the Series II 195256, then followed in 1953 by the Traveller, featuring its ash framework. The Series II vehicles had an 803cc engine and the Minor 1000 upgrade (1956-62), with a 948cc engine, was an improvement. The old-fashioned semaphore trafficator arms were replaced by flashing indicators from late 1961. The Morris Minor still has a strong following until this day with an enthusiastic owners’ group very active in the Peterborough area. Former ‘Jimmy Deeping’ resident Russ Smith ran a 1952 MM for a number of years. Russ, who now lives near Cambridge, subsequently sold this but recently fell for the charms of a 1954 saloon.
Austin A30 First shown to critical acclaim at the 1951 Earls Court Motor Show, Austin’s A30 was promoted as the ‘New Austin Seven’, replacing the old square styling of the long-in-the-tooth ‘7’ with stylish curves and a new combined body structure. Goodbye to the old Austin 7 – here’s the familyfriendly A30 saloon.
It was intended to take on the popularity of the Morris Minor and undercut the latter’s price. Introduced as a four-door model saloon, a twodoor saloon followed the next year, followed by a van and ‘Countryman’ estate in 1954. The A30 was replaced by the A35 in 1956 which had a bigger engine, larger rear windows and contemporary indicators replacing the original trafficators.
The home market for the Austin A30 is promoted in this period publicity shot.
Both the A30s and A35s continue to have a following among classic car enthusiasts, including a passion for souped-up versions for historic motor sport events.
Your writer’s first car in the late 1970s was a later 1950s model Minor 1000, with single-panel windscreen – sadly all that remains of this car is its original front registration plate displayed on the kitchen wall! continued >
37
VEHICLES OF THE 50’S
Light commercials Away from the family-orientated saloons, the car-based light commercial vans were very much part of the scene on our roads in the 1950s, with commercial concerns big and small keen to promote their services with sign writing on the sides of their panel vans. Deliveries around towns and, long before home freezer use became common, out into country communities, compact vans would deliver the goods for bakers, butchers, grocers and countless other business concerns. Among the most common varieties were the Bedford CA models and Morris J-Types, plus Austin and Morris-badged vans with the familiar, friendly cab face of the Morris Minor.
The J-Type was a 10cwt van launched by Morris in 1949 that continued to be built until 1961. An Austin 101 version appeared in 1957 with different badging and grille style.
As well as the panel vans, pick-up truck versions were a familiar sight on farms and construction sites. Surviving light commercials are always well received at classic vehicle events with examples of the sign writers’ art continuing to spread their messages.
We are fortunate to have several events in the area where you can see fine examples of classic vehicles from across the decades. One of the most popular is the Maxey Classic Car and Bike Show that has raised large sums over the years to support local causes. This year’s Show is scheduled for Saturday 13 August.

WESTINGS MEADOW
Eastern end Westings Meadow
Gravel extraction - aftermath
Westings Meadow by Kathryn Parsons Long ago, between the villages of Maxey and Etton, there was a place known as Westings Meadow. It lies roughly between the Maxey Cut and South Drain, though Westings was there long before these ruler-straight waterways were dug…
Back in medieval and Tudor times, the 500+ acres of Westings Meadow was divided into small plots owned by many different people. Each year they would take their harvest of hay, after which anyone from the surrounding villages could use the land to graze their sheep and cattle. It was an intricate, regulated farming system aimed at making best use of the land for everyone’s benefit. Archaeological excavations led by Francis Pryor in the 1980s showed that Neolithic communities grazed their sheep here too, whilst archive satellite images show evidence of Romano-British farms, Bronze Age ditches and more!** Visiting in person, you can find ancient willows marking the north-eastern boundary, and elsewhere there are even remnants of the 16th-century meadow banks.
Exploring Green Lane to Nine Bridges
It was earlier this year that I stumbled across a mention of Westings Meadow, with reference to a map dated 1580*. I’m one of Langdyke Countryside Trust’s Artists in Residence, and I quickly realised that three of Langdyke’s nature reserves now sit on the same site as Westings Meadow! I was intrigued, and decided to find out more. Since then, working with my co-Artist in Residence, ecologist and photographer Sarah Lambert, we have been exploring the place and delving into its history. Through our blogs, photography, maps, stitch and sculpture we are sharing the stories we find. It’s an ongoing project with an exhibition in the autumn, and we’d love to hear from you if you can add anything to the story of Westings Meadow! continued >

WESTINGS MEADOW
The western end of Westings Meadow is marked by Lolham Bridges. John Clare loved this place. He would come here each winter to marvel at the sight of the river in flood, and his name is even carved under one of the Contrasting Perspectives Kathryn Parsons bridges. There are carvings on other old bridges around Westings Meadow too – at Etton there are outlines of shoes, a hand, the church and a plough. Perhaps it was their way to say ‘This is our place’… or maybe it just helped pass the time while keeping an eye on their sheep? In the early 1800s, as part of the Enclosures Act, Westings Meadow (by then called Long Meadow) was divided up with a ruler. Over the following years its gentle
meandering rivers and soft meadow edges were transformed, until straight lines came to dominate the landscape. Nowadays, Westings Meadow is in another period of radical change. Field by field, the earth and the history held within it are being stripped back to reach the gravel deposits below. After quarrying has finished, the land is generally returned to farming or restored for the benefit of nature. This restoration is vitally important, on a local and national scale. It means that in spring lapwings have space to nest, while in winter tens of thousands of starlings delight us with their intricate murmurations as they fly over Westings Meadow. There’s a growing population of glow-worms, and one of Britain’s rarest moths lives here

too – it’s a little black-and-white day-flying beauty called the Four-spotted moth. It’s good to know that these wild treasures have secure long-term homes. Today some say that this landscape looks a bit empty… but as we’re discovering, this forgotten Meadow is actually full of rich history, fascinating topography and precious wildlife. With huge thanks to everyone who has helped with the research so far! The Deepings SCITT awarded ‘Good’ across the board by Ofsted “I have been at the Deepings School for 30 years, my children grew up here, went to school here and I am completely invested in the Deepings community”, said Nikki. Ofsted published their report this week, following an inspection of initial teacher training provision in January. Both the quality of education & training and leadership & management were judged to be ‘good’. After almost a decade of high-quality teacher training across local schools, The Deepings SCITT is celebrating a very complimentary Ofsted visit. Following a 4-day inspection, the team commented that, “The Deepings SCITT is a highly valued provider in South Lincolnshire.” The inspection highlighted the quality of this ‘rigorous’ and ‘comprehensive’ local teacher training programme, saying, ‘Leaders are ambitious for their trainees. Expectations are high.’ SCITT Director, Nikki Benjamin has led the teacher training provision at The Deepings School from the beginning and is delighted that Ofsted recognised the top-quality training received by her trainees: “Training programmes are ambitious and well sequenced.” Particularly pleasing is that the close-knit nature of the SCITT was highlighted in comments such as, “Supportive relationships between staff and trainees… like family.”
Nikki was keen to stress the national teacher recruitment picture which becomes more of a challenge every year. Of course, in Lincolnshire this is magnified in sparsely populated rural and coastal settings and has been heightened by the pandemic. In England, there are now 15000 fewer teachers than there were in 2010, and by 2024, there will be a projected 47000 shortfall.
Could you be part of the solution?
Still recruiting for a September 2022 start, Nikki is happy to have chat with anyone who might be interested or offer some school experience for those who just want a taste of how life as a teacher feels. If you would like any more information or to come in for a chat, please contact Donna Dimeloe on 01778 342159 or ddimeloe@deepings.anthemtrust.uk
Having a training provider on your doorstep means that local graduates can train in, and be employed by local schools, and if you are a graduate you could be starting teacher training in September; with tax free bursaries of up to £24k for shortage subjects. There are places available for most secondary subjects as well as primary. All you need is your degree, a passion for teaching and a wish to inspire young people to fulfil their potential. 45
Masters of the Sky I love May. It sees the return of one our best birds to our big skies. They usually give themselves away by their screams, which aren’t terrifying in nature; more a cry of ‘I’m home!’, after a long migration from Africa and the chance to land for the first time since the last time they were here, some nine months earlier.
hirundine family of Swallow, House Martin and Sand Martin. These are similarly at home high in the sky but roost each evening down here, like normal birds do. Swifts and hirundines are true aerial masters and to see them in their flocks over Deeping Lakes after a spring storm is sensational! With such agility, you might be forgiven in thinking they don’t have any aerial predators. Well, to catch a master of the sky, you need to be a fellow expert and one bird is certainly that. The Hobby is a small falcon with rusty coloured trousers, which also winters in Africa and mostly eats insects – which they mostly consume on the wing, fact fans. (Are you paying attention at the back? This is useful pub quiz knowledge!)
Of course! You guessed it! I’m talking about the Swift. Swift by name and Swift in flight. These special birds eat, sleep and even (kids cover your eyes!) do it on the wing! They only land at nest sites, which in this country is mostly gaps in a roof or attic. Just let that sink in. As the Fast Show (kids – ask your parents) would say, ‘Aren’t birds brilliant?’ ‘What about when the weather is bad?’, I hear you cry, ‘Surely, they land then?’. Nope! These birds will think nothing of a short trip, a hundred miles away, to escape a storm. They may even fly over to the continent, to escape getting wet!

Swift
Their high-speed chases between the chimney pots of Deeping are something I always look forward to each spring, and I mourn when they leave in August. They are one of our latest arrivals back from Africa, where they winter and are one of the earliest to head back south in autumn. In my opinion, dear reader, they just don’t stay long enough! The foot soldiers will have already been in for a few weeks or maybe a month; the
The Hobby also hunts Swifts and hirundines as well though, and will work in pairs, in hot pursuit of their fast-flying prey. Most of the time the Hobby won’t be successful but nevertheless these high-speed chases are spectacular, as both predator and prey twist and weave through the air. Of course, if we are going to mention Hobby when talking about masters of the sky, we really ought to name check the fastest of them all. The mighty Peregrine! Peregrines are famed for being the fastest animal on earth. The true top speed of a Peregrine is probably unknown but has been recorded at over 240mph when in stoop, chasing prey. They fly at great height and, with their amazing eyesight, they pick up their prey and stoop, very, very fast. Being hit at such a speed, I guess, the prey won’t even know it’s been hit! The Peregrine is a true wonder of nature and something we can enjoy very close to home, as it breeds very close to the Deepings these days. Let’s face it: any bird of prey is a master of the sky. Whether it be the Red Kite gliding over your house without a single wing beat or the Kestrel manically hovering over the roadside verge, they all use the winds and thermals to such graceful, effortless advantage – the mark of a true master.

Not all skilful sky veterans soar, swoop or hover. Some birds are masters in other ways. Take the arctic-breeding, Bar-tailed Godwit for example. To see them busily probing the mud on the estuary, sky master doesn’t spring to mind. But these are masters of migration and have been recorded, using radio trackers fitted to their backs, flying all the way from Alaska to New Zealand, non-stop!
BIRDS
And they aren’t the only ones. Most waders, such as the Godwits, are fantastic long-distance flyers, as are Swans, Geese and Ducks. Travelling unseen, at high altitude, against the elements and odds, bird migration is a real marvel. Which brings me back to Swifts. On a warm, May evening, sit outside, maybe with a glass of something, and look up and marvel with wonder about how these birds travel from Britain to Africa, back to Britain again, without landing. And then feel privileged that they’d rather land in Deeping! Swifts have declined by 58% in Britain in the last 50 years. To see what you can do to help Swifts, visit Swift Conservation go to swift-conservation.org Will works at Grasmere Farm in Deeping St James (with a butcher’s and deli in Market Gate, Market Deeping) but in his spare time enjoys wildlife watching locally and across the country. He is also a keen photographer. Many of his images can be found at http://justwildimages. blogspot.co.uk/ and photo cards can be found for sale at Market Gate Deli in Market Deeping. Peregrine
