Landlord, and Chef, Richard and his family have certainly done all they can to make this convenient little pub warm and welcoming in the last few months since their arrival. Quite a number of locals gathering at the bar added atmosphere on our visit and the staff were at pains to ensure that our meal was as good as it can be. At the bar there are real ales with Abbot Ales a popular choice. Families are well catered for with high chairs available and an enclosed garden. Keen that children should be able to share the same dishes as their parents, child’s portions are available but so are the more conventional children’s dishes, though here the chicken nuggets are made by Chef! With generous portions, delicious veg and red cabbage it is no wonder that the pub is being rediscovered. Key Lime Pie is a favourite dessert with many but Chef likes to ring the changes and the Pecan Pie came in for a special mention by our party and the fact that cream is served in a jug for selective pouring! The Red Lion, West Deeping
Characterful with beams, an inglenook and low windows looking out onto the street, Gino, Vikki and Marie have worked hard to create a gastro pub with interesting dishes and great customer care. As well as a selection of roasts topped with a delightful overblown yorkshire pud, vegetables are served separately. Homemade horseradish sauce and apple sauce accompany the beef and pork respectively with children’s portions available for just £5.95. As well as the traditional Sunday lunch there is an impressive specials board and the dandelion and burdock braised ham is truly mouthwatering. The desserts are served with panache and include the highly recommended chocolate orange fondant, the blueberry sorbet was decorated with a kumquat in some style but the honeycombe parfait is simply in a class all of it’s own. Ales include a selection from local micro brewers, Hopshackle and Star. A special Sunday lunch but not with an exceptional price tag. To book 01778 347190.
The Bull, Market Deeping
For the best retro Sunday lunch in town there is nowhere to beat The Bull. Delicious prawn cocktail served with ice crisp salad is my treat followed by a choice of two different roast meats and all the trimmings. Plates piled high and always tender this is the kind of roast that keeps you going til Tuesday. For dessert custard is served with apple pie and crumbles but there is nothing to beat the piece de resistance, the banana split. A feast for the eye as well as the stomach this is a banana split as it was meant to be, with ice cream, cream and sprinkles. It can’t help but make you feel special. All served in the quiet of the Woodhouse Room behind the bar with pictures of old Deeping on the walls and served with a friendly smile by Vonney and Eileen. Booking essential call 343320
Golden Pheasant, Etton.
Our family Sunday lunch in this beautiful Georgian building was a very pleasant experience. Décor was stylish, the welcome warm, and a good range of real ales was on offer, including Woodforde’s Wherry, a personal favourite. The youngest member of our party was provided with a comfortable, sturdy highchair. Menu choices looked inviting – roasts, as you would expect, but with other options – and the home-made chicken and gammon pie chosen by one member of our party was pronounced delicious. Locally-sourced roast lamb was also excellent with generous portions, crispy potatoes and some of the best Yorkshire puddings we have eaten. The children’s menu, too, was interesting - not just the usual “bangers”. For afters, the sticky toffee pudding was light and tasty and the peach tart pleasant, if a bit too sweet for personal taste. The Waterton Arms, Deeping St James
A genuine ‘local’, always busy, especially at weekends, in a lovely old building with a large garden and play area, no gimmicks but offering excellent food, beers and wines. The menu is imaginative, the cooking is skilled and delicious and the presentation faultless. Although a meal at The Waterton isn’t a cheap option, it is certainly very good value and makes a wonderful treat. The Waterton is very popular for Sunday meals, offering an different take on the traditional choices of meats, with good and original vegetarian and fish options and delectable desserts, including cheeses. When Liz and Brian Waterland ate at the Waterton in September service was friendly and attentive; the wine list not over priced but full of good things; all in all, a lovely meal. There is no doubt about it; this pub has an excellent chef. Highly recommended for its warm welcome and villagey atmosphere; a real Deeping St James quality pub. To book call 342219
