Reflexión Semanal

Weekly Reflection Nurtured by God’s merciful love

Nutridos por el amor misericordioso de Dios

It has been one week since we celebrated Easter, and today’s prayers and readings continue to remind us of God’s unconditional love. In the gospel Jesus shows the depth of this love when he visits the disciples and authorizes their power to forgive sins. Jesus shows us that the Sacrament of Reconciliation is one of the greatest moments of grace that we can experience when he blesses Thomas with this sacrament. When Jesus invites Thomas to place his hands in the wounds, Jesus extends forgiveness to Thomas who immediately falls to his knees saying, “My Lord and my God.” This merciful aspect of love has many qualities that Jesus knows his disciples will need to understand if they are to be faithful followers. Jesus did not shame Thomas or reprimand him but simply offered him “peace” and the very proof Thomas had demanded. Jesus showed Thomas kindness, modeling forbearance and compassion so the disciples would have an example to follow. The first reading from the Acts of the Apostles records the early community of believers in their attempt to follow Jesus’ example describing them as of “one heart and mind.” Those who had followed Jesus and witnessed his daily life shared the joys of talking and remembering actual moments which were recorded for us. When we read the gospels and epistles, we witness the many times Jesus waited patiently for the apostles to understand, and the many times Jesus forgave them. He reminded them on several occasions that they must forgive one another as God forgives them. Their lessons have become our lessons so we joyfully echo the responsorial psalm, “Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his love is everlasting.”
