YOUR HOSPITAL AT WORK
The Ojai Valley Community Hospital Foundation stood in the forefront of efforts during 2016 to fund a new Continuing Care Center at our local nonprofit hospital. Ground was broken in August for the new 75-bed facility to meet the growing need in our community for skilled nursing and rehabilitation services.
Our nonprofit Ojai Valley Community Hospital, part of Community Memorial Health System, served thousands of patients in 2016 in a variety of ways:
757 TOTAL ADMISSIONS TO BOTH THE HOSPITAL AND ITS CONTINUING CARE CENTER
Our Foundation’s primary focus in 2016 was to provide financial support, in partnership with Community Memorial Health System, for construction of this new facility to replace our existing CCC. Revenues from a new, modern facility will help secure our hospital’s financial future and ensure its ability to continue offering its many inpatient and outpatient services, including 24-hour emergency care in our own neighborhood. Work is well underway on the project, which should be ready for occupancy by the end of 2018 and will be the first LEED project in the city of Ojai. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification requires buildings to be environmentally responsible and to use resources efficiently in their construction, operation and maintenance.
ROAD TO THE FUTURE
Our hospital’s emphasis on quality care and “best practices” was recognized during the year by the federal Medicare Beneficiary Quality Improvement Project, which lauded the hospital’s “first-rate performance” and “culture of excellence.”

Annual income from the Sprague/Frenzell Endowment provided $72,000 in restricted funds, allowing the hospital Emergency Department to be staffed around the clock.
Exceptional Distinguished Major
Contributions from the community enabled the Foundation to raise $403,100 in unrestricted funds in 2016. This total includes $117,600 from our semi-annual mail appeal. The annual October Classic run/walk netted $11,900 and featured a Wellness Fair in addition to the 5K/10K competition. A concert and dinner event at Libbey Bowl, held in conjunction with Community Memorial Hospital Foundation, raised $40,000 for Ojai, although these proceeds are not reflected in our 2016 revenue total. Employee-giving programs at our Ojai Hospital and The Oaks totaled another $2,255.

The Foundation contributed $192,000 toward construction of the new CCC in 2016 and has contributed more than $900,000 since the beginning of the BECAUSE campaign in 2014. With the help of the Ojai community, we are confident we will reach our total pledge goal of $1.5 million over the next four years.

In addition, the Guild continued its support of Operation Picasso, which furnishes and maintains original art work to adorn the hospital, CCC and Multi-Specialty Clinic as a way of promoting healing. This outstanding program also features Art Matters, which taps local talent to bring art and music experiences to CCC residents, including hands-on activities.

The Guild’s Las Vegas-style spring event was chaired by Mara Redden, Sally Simpson, Taffy Lowen and Peggy Melton. Roger Beerworth and Barbara Parsons headed up the annual Nightingale Ball in December with the theme of “Light Up the Night.” All proceeds were directed to help the Foundation fulfill its pledge to the new CCC.

The Hospital Foundation Guild, with more than 200 members, proved once again to be invaluable in generating financial support and enhancing awareness of our hospital. Under the leadership of Teresa Smith in 2015-16 and Phil Caruthers in 2016-17, the Guild contributed more than $140,600 to our bottom line last year.
