Thomas Fire: Patients the Priority
D
espite blazes, blackouts, and evacuations due to the Thomas Fire, our staff saw to the medical, spiritual and psychosocial care of patients and clients — even though they themselves had been evacuated from their homes and their own fate was uncertain. Patient safety is our number one priority. Many of our patients had to be evacuated. In fact, all of our Ojai patients had to be moved. We tracked every evacuated patient every day and delivered services wherever they were needed — evacuation centers, hotels, churches, and even local hospitals. All told, 79 staff and patients were evacuated and 27 hospice patients were relocated to partner agencies. Command Center With so many moving pieces, it was imperative that we had a plan. Teresa Pavan, RN Vice President/COO, led a team who worked around-theclock. Our partner agencies heroically delivered supplies to patients. One company, Palmedeq, made sure
patients without power had fresh oxygen. At the command post, Jeannette Cunningham, Compliance and Privacy Officer, recalls, “It was not at all chaotic. Everyone kept calm and got the job done — all you had to do was ask.” Our staff was quick to cover for displaced colleagues. Many volunteered outside of work to help their neighbors by distributing blankets and masks at homeless camps to prepare meals for evacuees. Going the extra mile One of our CareGiver clients was trapped in Ojai. Wheelchair bound and without a husband, additional help or transportation, our staffmember helped her pack her precious belongings, drove her — the long way around — and helped her check into a hotel in Carpinteria. She stayed with her until another of her hired caregivers could meet to take over. A community comes together This disaster showed how a community can come together and make it through to the other side. So many agencies, businesses, and private citizens stood

As the imminent danger is behind us and we begin healing our community, we must all remember that everyone’s grief is valid and quite unique. It is important for us all to move forward with care and compassion. Remember to honor yourself and your experience. Remember to listen to others. And most importantly, return to your breath as you take life one moment at a time.

Total Commitment Under All Circumstances
O
n any given day, over 400 home health and 100 hospice patients and their families rely upon Livingston for care. Rain, shine — or disaster, we are there for them. The recent Thomas Fire that devastated our community highlighted Livingston’s dedication to provide care even in the most difficult of times. Patient safety is our priority. Most of our patients are frail elders who cannot escape on their own — and we cannot leave them in a danger area. Such was the situation of the Thomas Fire and that’s when we put our Emergency Operations Plan into action. Camped in a conference room, surrounded by computers and phones, our emergency operations team tracked each patient. Led by Incident Commander Teresa Pavan, RN, COO of Livingston, they tracked the path of the fire, evacuations and road closures. Our team worked around-the-clock to ensure that every patient was safe and that every patient was seen as scheduled. Field staff rallied to provide contracted services — even though many of them were under mandatory evacuation orders. At one point, 45 of our home health patients were evacuated. Twenty-one hospice patients, their family’s lives already in upheaval because of the devastating impact of a terminal illness, were moved to other locations without any interruption in care. Since this was a countywide crisis, our dedicated and compassionate staff members worked closely with the Ventura County Health Care Coalition and County Emergency Medical Service Agency. As the only home care and hospice agency on this team, we were quickly re-directing our clinicians who are in the field to where they were needed most. This is an invaluable community service and strengthens our position as a vital public resource. Providing the highest quality of care possible to our patients is what we do every day. Providing that same level of care during a crisis just highlights our total commitment to our mission under all circumstances. We are extremely thankful that our donors continue their generous support so we are able to help our most vulnerable neighbors when they need us the most.

As community-supported non-profit organizations, they strive to provide professional and supportive home health and hospice care services of the highest quality in the most cost effective manner to the people of Ventura County to ensure a positive patient outcome. Livingston explores and develops health-related programs based upon community need and acceptance, economic viability and availability of resources to provide services. Livingston is sensitive to the financial circumstances of its patients and provides needed services, including those at reduced or no charge to indigent patients, based upon the available resources of the organization. The Livingston Memorial VNA Health Corporation is the parent organization of Livingston Memorial Visiting Nurse Association and Livingston CareGivers. Livingston Memorial Visiting Nurse Association is licensed by the State of California, certified by Medicare and Medi-Cal, and is accredited by The Joint Commission. Joint Commission accreditation is regarded as the most comprehensive review of patient safety and quality efforts in the industry. Livingston CareGivers is a non-medical provider of inhome assistance and is CAHSAH certified and not associated with The Joint Commission.

ow that the IRA Charitable Rollover gift opportunity is a permanent feature of the tax code, more and more people see it as a unique way to make larger charitable gifts and reduce their tax liability at the same time. The IRA Charitable Rollover provision allows individuals 70 1/2 years and older to make tax-free gifts totaling up to $100,000 from a traditional IRA account directly to Livingston or any other qualified charity. If you and your spouse have IRA accounts, you may each make gifts up to $100,000. While you cannot claim a charitable deduction for IRA
gifts, this distribution counts as a tax-free transfer fulfilling your annual minimum required distribution. You may not receive goods or services in return for your gift, but you will get a written acknowledgement for tax purposes from us. Some donors like the giving option of using untaxed IRA dollars for their charitable giving because it allows them to give more. Money withdrawn from an IRA account can be subject to the highest income tax rates. In California, that can be upwards of 50% in combined Federal and State tax rates. Ouch! By making a gift directly to Livingston, 100 percent of the money goes to help people right here in Ventura County with quality home healthcare and compassionate hospice. In order to initiate an IRA Charitable Rollover, please contact your IRA custodian. Transactions can take a few weeks, so planning ahead can help. Some IRA custodians make their clients giving even easier by issuing checkbooks linked directly to IRA accounts, which allows you to make gifts whenever and in whatever amount you want. You can ask your IRA custodian if this option is available to you. New Program for In-Home Personal Care
A
s we turn the page into a new year, we reflect on the needs of our community. Over the past year we have seen a growing demand from senior couples who both require assistance at home. Typically, one individual has taken on the role of caregiver to their partner, but due to their own decline or temporary health setback, they are unable to fill this role. For many couples it is a challenging time, when both are no longer independent as they once were. Families are sometimes forced to evaluate if dad and mom can remain together at home, due to the differences in their individual care needs. As you can imagine, that can be a heartbreaking decision to consider. It is because of situations like this that Livingston CareGivers was moved to create a resolution that would meet this need. I’m happy to share that we now offer Couples Care as an answer to this growing need! Couples Care allows a single caregiver to assist both individuals. This service will offer the least amount of disruption to a household, while providing stability and continuity for our clients. Tailoring our care to meet a couples’ needs is our goal, clients can arrange as little as three hours to as much as twenty-four hours of care. Long-term or shortterm, our services are designed for flexibility. Our team of caregivers are equally enthusiastic about being allowed to care for two people. Many caregivers have
shared that when in the home of a senior couple, on most occasions, both require some level of care. It can be an ethical tug-of-war for our team, as it is in their nature to help when they see a need. Couples Care will relieve our team from the weight of this potential dilemma. Couples will have the option to remain at home, together, in a place of familiarity, love and cherished memories. We can remove the tag of caregiver, from either spouse, and allow them to be husband and wife again. Answering the needs of the community has always been the mission of Livingston and we are proud to continue the tradition! Personal Care is Peace of Mind Livingston CareGivers has provided vital, non-medical, personal assistance in the home to residents of Ventura County for over 15 years. Our clients include not only the frail, disabled and elderly, but anyone and any age that needs personal help at home. When daily needs are managed and addressed, people can remain in their home, which is often a preferred option to long-term placement. Many studies show that home is where the elderly prefer to be and do best.
