Weekly Reflection

Reflexión Semanal

Tending God’s kingdom on earth

Today’s readings and prayers remind us that God expects us to use the talents and gifts he has given us to glorify him by bringing goodness to the world. God has sown the seed of faith within each of us and asks us to bear the fruits of our individual gifts. This understanding grows out of Jesus’ Pentecostal exhortation to his apostles, “As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” This point is illustrated in today’s readings which are replete with images of trees, which when they have matured as Ezekiel describes, “bear fruit, [and] become majestic so that every winged thing [dwells] in the shade of [their] boughs.” The responsorial psalm echoes this message, “like a cedar of Lebanon shall the [just one] grow.” One imagines the care provided by such a tree: sustenance, warmth, shelter and protection. Jesus, speaking in the gospel, reminds us that “[the kingdom of God] is like a mustard seed that, when it is sown in the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on the earth. But once it is sown, it springs up and becomes the largest of plants...so that the birds of the sky can dwell in its shade.” Jesus’ message is clear. We are to nurture God’s kingdom here on earth by caring for one another. Jesus asks us to make a commitment to follow his example and so we are inspired to pray, O God, “without you mortal frailty can do nothing, grant us always the help of your grace that in following your commands we may please you by our resolve and our deeds” (Collect).

Adult Ministries

Did You Know?

Opportunity for Adult Faith Formation

You Can Help Children Prepare For Natural Disasters

Are you looking for a way this summer to continue to grow deeper in your faith journey and relationship with God? Are you hoping for an experience of a small faith group, or are you considering becoming Catholic and receiving the sacraments of initiation? Then welcome to our summer Adult Faith Formation series hosted by the Women's & Men's Ministries and the RCIA team. For 6 successive Wednesday evenings beginning June 24 from 7:00-8:30 pm, these ministries will host and facilitate a series based on Fr. Albert Haase' book “Catching Fire, Becoming Flame”. Each evening will be centered on a 30 minute video created by Fr. Albert based on 6 themes from his book. We’ll then break into small groups, and enjoy some time for praise and worship. There will be no cost for this series, since it is hosted by members of our own parish. For this reason we ask all who are interested in attending to register with Kati Excallier (Kescallier@ola-vta.org - 642-7966 ext. 142) so we can be sure to plan according to the level of overall interest.

When parents and caregivers or other family members deal with crisis situations calmly and confidently, children feel more confident and secure. A child’s reactions are influenced by the behavior they see. The better prepared you are, the more reassuring you may be during an emergency. To help prepare your family, develop a disaster plan and assemble a supply kit. For more information and emergency preparedness tips, visit bepreparedcalifornia.ca.gov.
