Focus on the Future
SERVING OUR COMMUNITY
As we begin our 12th year, your Ojai Valley Community Hospital Foundation and its donors can be justifiably proud of the great strides we’ve made in raising the quality of health care our local nonprofit hospital offers the Ojai Valley.
Our nonprofit Ojai Valley Community Hospital provided a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services in 2015:
Our Foundation has been a key force in creating and staffing a new Emergency Department, purchasing state-of-the-art equipment, securing a high-tech imaging and retrieval system, refurbishing and renovating the hospital interior, and bringing a multi-specialty/headache clinic to our neighborhood. Rather than focusing on our past achievements, however, the Foundation in 2015 turned its attention to the future. Our financial support last year centered on the plan to build a new Continuing Care Center adjacent to our hospital. We believe the new CCC will more fully meet the needs of an aging population for skilled nursing and rehabilitation services in our own community. At the same time, it will provide a vital revenue stream to help keep our hospital on firm financial footing. The Foundation contributed nearly $900,000 last year toward construction of the proposed facility—the single largest contribution we’ve made since our formation in 2005. This very significant gift brings our total contributions to the hospital to $5.84 million over the past 11 years. Raising additional funds for the CCC project is expected to remain at the top of the Foundation’s agenda for the next several years. During the past year, our current CCC received the top rating (five stars) from the Federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. This honor demonstrates the value of being part of Community Memorial Health System.

Foundation contributions to the hospital’s Critical Needs Fund were used in 2015 to purchase a traction table for the Rehabilitation Department. The table is used for pain relief as well as to improve blood flow to the spine and enhance patient mobility.
The Foundation Hospital Guild remained an essential part of our fund-raising activities under the leadership of Barbara Haggerty in 2014-15 and Teresa Smith in 2015-16. The summer Patio Party, chaired by Valerie and Alan Greenberg, and the gala Nightingale Ball, chaired by Peggy Russell and Linda Law, together netted $69,000. A portion of the Nightingale Ball proceeds will be used to purchase rehab equipment for the new Continuing Care Center. The remainder of the Guild-raised revenues were also earmarked for the new facility.

Foundation efforts generated more than $285,300 in nonrestricted funds in 2015. This includes $115,700 from our semi-annual mail appeals to the community. The annual October Classic run/walk contributed nearly $10,000 to this bottom line and once again featured a Wellness Fair. Employees of The Oaks donated $1,100 through their payroll giving program. Funds raised at the fall Libbey Bowl concert totaled $56,000.
The annual income from the Sprague/Frenzell Foundation endowment totaled $179,800 in 2015. These restricted funds make it possible for the hospital Emergency Department to be staffed on a 24/7 basis, assuring the community that the ED door is always open and emergency care and a physician will be readily available. ED visits were up almost 10 percent during the year, underscoring the importance of this facility to the community.
