would be for Tom. Dr. Dial’s painmanagement regimen worked for him. Tom was always kibitzing with Dr. Dial — he never lost his sense of humor. For a while, Tom and I ran a support group for people with MS. I’d bring snacks and everyone would talk and visit. Sadly, the other members started to die and we had to close it down. continued on page 4

y son, Tom, was always a happy-go-lucky guy — always willing to assist anyone, always willing to go the extra mile. Even after he was diagnosed with MS (he had just turned 30 years old), he continued to work at the concrete pumping company he owned. Sadly, as a result of his disease, he slowly lost mobility, moving from a cane to a wheelchair until he was finally bedridden and unable to care for himself. Three years ago, when the task of caring for Tom became too great for his wife, I started caring for him in my home. I had volunteered with the Camarillo Health Care District for 22 years. I had time, energy and a home. I knew how I could help him and am so glad I had him for the last three years of his life. When my son moved in, I was 85 years old. I thought I was a “seasoned

The nurses taught me how to care for Tom, trained me how to bathe him and how to turn him so I wouldn’t get injured. My advice is to work with the Livingston people — be prepared for their visit and follow their advice. They only want to do what is best for the patient and family. I didn’t realize how painful MS

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is the most common autoimmune disorder affecting the central nervous system. Although it doesn’t directly cause death, it can cause complications that cause other forms of physical disability. Symptoms can include double vision, muscle weakness, problems with speech or swallowing, trouble with sensation or trouble with coordination. Being in a wheelchair or bedridden can make the person more susceptible to infection, blood clots, and pneumonia.

Palliative Care
ivingston has been Ventura County’s home healthcare leader for nearly 70 years. In 1947 founder Olivia Hathaway made her first home healthcare visit. In 1987 we were the first agency to develop a Medicare certified hospice program. There have been many other firsts as well. Lesser known, but becoming increasingly more important in the home healthcare landscape, is Livingston’s leadership in working with area hospitals and insurers to provide palliative care. Palliative patients have life threatening illnesses or progressive chronic conditions and, for a variety of reasons, are not on hospice. Many come onto Livingston care directly from an area hospital and that is where Livingston began its home based palliative program. Partnering with hospital based palliative care programs at Community Memorial Healthcare System, St. John’s Hospitals in Oxnard and Camarillo and the Ventura County Medical Center, we developed a program that met the complex needs of these fragile patients. The success of the program has led to greater utilization of palliative care and given patients more choices than the prior “either – or” approach of home healthcare versus hospice. In fact, we have seen a nearly five fold increase in demand for our palliative services. In 2012 we averaged about five palliative patients daily on care. In 2016 the average is closer to 25. As well as meeting the care needs of palliative patients and preparing for the growth in demand for services, Livingston has been a leader in driving insurance coverage for palliative services. Aetna, Kaiser Permanente, and Gold Coast Health Plan (the County’s MediCal provider) all recognize the value of palliative care and are making it a covered benefit for their enrollees. This coverage is an important first step in providing care and access to vulnerable palliative care patients. While palliative care treatment and coverage will continue to evolve and has become an integral part of Livingston’s continuum of care from hospital to home, it is supporters like you who have allowed Livingston to be Ventura County’s first choice for quality home healthcare for nearly seven decades. Thank you and please consider Livingston in your year end giving. Laura K. McAvoy, Board Chairman Lanyard K. Dial, MD, President/CEO and Medical Director 2

A Mother’s Love
continued from page 1 Tom was a great guy and he tried to get along as best he could. Sometimes he’d get sullen, but that would pass. While he had use of his right hand, he used a stylus to spend a lot of time on his iPad — communicating with friends and sharing jokes. He also enjoyed watching television and followed his favorite shows closely. Tom passed away shortly before his 53rd birthday. The best thing about having Tom on Livingston Hospice care is that it allowed me to just be his mom, thanks to the wonderful care Livingston provides. I can’t say enough about Dr. Dial and the personnel who took care of Tom. But that doesn’t keep me from missing him enormously — I still hear his voice calling me at night. It will take a while to get used to living alone.
It’s about doing something larger than yourself. It’s about serving the world, helping others. Walter Isaacson
Tom remained positive throughout his illness and never lost his sense of humor.
Anyone who touched Tom’s life reaped the benefit of that contact. I miss him, I love him, and I am grateful I was there for him those last years. We’d love to hear your story! Call Lynda Frank at (805) 642-0239 or email lfrank@lmvna.org.
