ABSOLUTELY’S August issue highlights 2

So, the holidays are here and the collective mood lifts. London empties out in August and takes on a sleepy feel, which many of us love. In fact, I'd love it more if we all just took the month off, like in Rome. Not that I'd appreciate everything being closed, however, because access wihout queueing is one of the joys of August. In this issue we're celebrating not the quiet city but our health, with a large new section dedicated to healthcare and wellbeing. Though, of course, a quiet month can make quite a significant contribution to our wellbeing – especially when this quiet month includes some excellent exhibitions (we're heading to Ealing to see Grayson Perry, and to Hoxton for the reveal of Museum of the Home's new look) and some brilliant theatre (there's still time to see the marvellous Mnemonic at the National). Enjoy August.

ART TO WATCH

A new masterpiece Unveiled in London

AAnthony McCall: Solid Light

An early pioneer of experimental cinema and installation art, McCall is known for his material film installations where projected light is visibly enhanced using a thin mist to produce solid light forms, bringing together film, sculpture, and drawing. Visitors are invited to interact with each of the four solid light works, offering an unforgettable immersive encounter. tate.org.uk

Another Mona Lisa has been unveiled in London after being acquired at auction by London-based Israeli-German art collector Dr. Aaron Roni Neumark, who wants to o er one of London’s major museums the opportunity to present the artwork to the public.

The painting was credited it in the Christie’s NY catalogue as ‘Follower of Leonardo Da Vinci’. Neumark is a passionate collector and the custodian of the extraordinary Neumark Family Trust & Collection. He sensed the artwork needed further scrutiny and successfully acquired the painting.

TAVARES STRACHAN:

A team of forensic scientists set out to establish whether this mysterious work could be a legitimate 16th century artwork by an immediate follower of the master himself. After painstakingly analysing the colour palette, pigments samples, layer structure and aging process,to authenticate and date the composition, they confirmed that it could plausibly have been painted in the 16th century.

There Is Light Somewhere

TO 1 SEPTEMBER; HAYWARD GALLERY

Whether making expeditions to the Arctic and sending back a 4.5 ton block of ice to his birthplace in the Bahamas, launching into orbit a gold sculpture of the first Black American in the US space programme; or creating his own alternative 3,000-page encyclopaedia, Strachan has worked to expand the boundaries of contemporary art with the imaginative verve of a true pioneer. This is the first mid-career survey of the New York-based, Bahamian artist. southbankcentre.co.uk

Neumark then sought the advice of leading art conservationist and restorer Simon Gillespie, known for his regular TV appearances. He and his team discovered that the painting was probably made by copying the Louvre’s original, or the Prado version, at an early stage The pattern of cracking across the paint surface is typical of the painting’s presumed age. Tests have suggested that the colour palette of the Neumark Mona Lisa is comparable to the Prado version, executed by one of Leonardo’s close pupils.

Dr. Neumark comments, “Ms. Lisa Gherardini del Giocondo, Mona Lisa, is an eternal and incomparable icon, and from now on, another Jewel in the Crown of The Neumark Family Collection”.

LIVING MEMORY

A captivating revival of Complicité's Mnemonic comes to the National

This is a play with a big reputation. First performed in 1999, it's said to have inspired people to become actors and instilled a love of theatre in others. In this revival at the Olivier, I'd wager that the audience includes lots of people who have seen it before. We even meet a superfan in the loo queue. Because to say it's an unusual play is an understatement. A non-linear structure and an abstract, philosophical spirit makes it an emotive, atmospheric and strange production that stays with you – it's easy to see why people remember it decades later. Production company Complicité is known (as we're told in the intro, in a meta moment) for being "quite physical".

Directed by Simon McBurney, who conceived and starred in the original production, Khalid Abdalla now takes the main role. He bursts onto the stage as if he's introducing the play, which he is – but also, this is the play. His long monologue introduces themes of memory with scientific information about the hippocampus, planting the notion that when we remember something, "we're remembering the

memory," not the event. And to warm us all up to experimenting with memory, we're invited to put on eye masks and hold a leaf in our hands for a collective retreat into our childhoods – and to a date in 2016 that nobody can remember. Or can we? It's the day of the Brexit referendum, which of course everybody can remember. Anyway, all of this collective reminiscing is interrupted by a phone ringing, and continuing to ring – and it's Abdalla's, right there on stage. In a dramatic conceptual shift, he becomes Omar, an audience member leaving the theatre to talk to a friend about holding a leaf in an auditorium... and we're drawn into the story of his missing partner, Alice (a brilliant performance by Eileen Walsh), who is on a quest around Europe to find her father. All of this links to Otzi the 5,000 year-old frozen iceman, discovered on the Italian/ Austrian border in 1991. Passing characters have backstories that connect to themes of history and culutural identity – notably a Greek taxi driver, an Algerian hotel maid and a Jewish journalist – and the many fragments form a memorable experience.

LONDON SCENE

Grayson Perry is a William Hogarth for the 21st century at Pitzhanger Manor

Is Grayson Perry a modern day William Hogarth? A new exhibition at Ealing’s Pitzhanger Manor presents Perry’s contemporary satirical tapestries alongside Hogarth’s 18th century engravings. The Turner-Prize-winning artist’s six largescale tapestries are displayed in the home that William Hogarth’s A Rake’s Progress, the inspiration behind Perry’s tapestries, were purchased for and displayed.

Sir Grayson Perry CBE RA Hon FRIBA is an internationally celebrated chronicler of contemporary life, drawing us into intricately designed works of art with wit and nostalgia. In his work, Perry tackles subjects that are universally human: identity, gender, social status, sexuality and religion. Autobiographical

references—to the artist’s childhood, his family, and his cross-dressing—can be read in tandem with questions about décor and decorum, class and taste, and the status of the artist versus that of the artisan. The exhibition invites viewers to consider their own connections with the tapestries’ vivid storytelling and rich, allegorical imagery.

The set of monumental tapestries o er a contemporary re-reading of William Hogarth's A Rake's Progress, a series of eight satirical paintings depicting a riches-to-rags tale of Tom Rakewell in 18th-century London. Hogarth’s original paintings were bought by Sir John Soane’s wife 222 years ago to be displayed at Pitzhanger. The Soanes subsequently moved with their art collections to Lincoln’s Inn Fields.

However, Pitzhanger continues to display a full series of framed 18th century engravings of A Rake’s Progress in their original setting of the vibrant red walls of the Soane’s drawing room. Visitors to the exhibition will be in the unique position to be able to compare and contrast both intricately detailed morality tales in the home of Hogarth’s series.

Taking Hogarth’s famed series as a starting point, Perry’s tapestries depict a corresponding fable of class, taste and social mobility. Weaving the complex ‘class journey’ of the fictional protagonist, Tim Rakewell, the tapestries include many of the characters, incidents and objects Grayson Perry encountered on his journeys throughout Sunderland, Tunbridge Wells and The Cotswolds for the

BAFTA award-winning television series All in the Best Possible Taste with Grayson Perry. Grayson Perry said: “The tapestries tell the story of class mobility, for I think nothing has as strong an influence on our aesthetic taste as the social class in which we grow up. I am interested in the politics of consumerism and the story of popular design but, for this project, I focus on the emotional investment we make in the things we choose to live with, wear, eat, read, or drive. Class and taste run deep in our character—we care. This emotional charge is what draws me to a subject.”

Clare Gough, Director of Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery, said: "We are delighted to showcase

Grayson Perry's ‘The Vanity of Small Di erences’ at Pitzhanger. This exhibition not only resonates with Soane’s own display of William Hogarth’s paintings here at Pitzhanger, but also continues our mission to present thought-provoking art that reflects society today. We hope to draw in a wide and diverse audience to enjoy these witty and satirical tapestries."

Ahuge pumpkin has landed in Kensington Gardens. The much-loved and famously eccentric Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama has created a new large-scale sculpture to appear near the Round Pond, where it will remain until November.

Pumpkin (2024) marks Kusama's return to Serpentine, which was the location of her first retrospective exhibition in Britain in 2000, which explored Kusama’s obsessions with dots, nets, food and sex.

The work is Kusama’s tallest bronze pumpkin sculpture to date, standing at 6 metres tall and 5.5 metres in diameter. Known for her immersive installations, large-scale sculptures and intricate paintings, Yayoi Kusama often features kabocha, or pumpkins, in her work. Since 1946 Kusama’s pumpkins have taken many forms, colours and shapes, but their surfaces are consistently covered in the artist’s signature repeating polka dot pattern.

Kusama’s relationship to the kabocha is rooted in her childhood: the artist’s family home was surrounded by fields of this squash. Pumpkins frequently appear as stand-ins for self-portraits. Kusama admires them for their everyday quality, hardiness, and unique, frequently humorous forms.

Yayoi Kusama said: “I am sending to London with love my giant pumpkin. Since my childhood pumpkins have been a great comfort to me, they are such tender things to touch, so appealing in colour and form. They are humble and amusing at the same time and speak to me of the joy of living.” Since 1994, a yellow and black pumpkin has been permanently on display at the Benesse Art Site Naoshima – an island in Japan’s inland sea dedicated to displaying art within nature.

Kusama’s Pumpkin is the latest in a long-standing series of remarkable public presentations in The Royal Parks since Serpentine’s foundation in 1970.

REAL ROOMS

Museum of the Home’s popular installations of London interiors through the ages reopen this month with a new, lived-in feel

Museum of the Home’s world-renowned Rooms Through Time galleries have been much loved for many years. But recently they came to feel a bit lifeless and the refurbished museum shifted its focus to look at how Londoners live in their homes, not just a history of interiors. The reopened galleries reveal new stories that represent the many communities surrounding the museum, and show real signs of life in each space.

Real Rooms is designed to be more inclusive of the complex histories of migration and identity that have shaped modern Britain from 1870 to the present. Meanwhile, the Rooms Through Time galleries that exploring home from 1630 to 1830 remain unchanged.

Museum of the Home's four new rooms include a Jewish tenement from 1911, reflecting the Rothschild Buildings, the bedroom of an Irish couple in the 1950s as they get ready for a night out, and a BritishVietnamese contemporary kitchen complete with the smells, sounds, and textures that make this dynamic community feel at

home. A new Future Room imaginatively explores what real peoples’ homes might look like amid challenges such as climate change, social inequality, and technological advances, with interactive artefacts creating a dynamic and evolving space.

These rooms join the existing 1870s room, which takes in the history of Indian travelling Ayahs, and will display Rebecca Solomon’s ‘A Young Teacher’ jointly acquired by Museum of the Home and Tate in Summer 2023. The

1976 room co-curated with Dr Michael McMillan has been re-contextualised, with music, food, and family at the forefront and a new interactive garden display. The 1998 room has been transformed to tell the story of LGBTQ+ renters in a shared ex-council building from the early 2000s, showing how home can become a safe space where gender, sexuality and creativity can be expressed.

Real Rooms brings new narratives to the galleries, reflected in reconfigured wall and floor treatments to extend beyond barriers, o er windows to widen perspectives and blur thresholds so visitors can step into bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens and dwellings for a more immersive and intimate experience. The ‘lived-in’ feel takes inspiration from oral histories and experiences of communities. Displays bring in design and architectural elements

to enable exploration and learning for everyone. Child-focused interpretation and an emphasis on interactive and experiential history will ensure that all audiences will be able to discover something new. Many of the Real Rooms’ stories are hyper-local, reflecting the diverse lived experiences of communities that have called Hackney and East London home over the centuries.

Real Rooms have been researched and created by Museum of the Home using co-creative and co-curatorial methods with communities shaping how their histories are told. Local communities have been involved at every stage of the process, ensuring their stories are told in a way that is authentic and meaningful.

FORCE OF ENERGY

Fuerza Bruta's Aven makes

an impressive spectacle at the Roundhouse

Descended from the memorable De La Guarda production that has wowed the Roundhouse several times since the 1990s, Fuerza Bruta's Aven is another Argentinian extravaganza. Part circus, part spectacle, part club night, this is a riotous, energetic performance. It's standing only, and there's a club vibe, only it's 7pm and still light outside. It's still light when we leave too, because this is not a long show: 70 minutes at most, so anyone worried about standing up need not fear. First o , a troupe of drummers appears on a stage, thrashing energetically and setting the pace, which is fast. Acts appear out of nowhere, most of them above our heads: a huge inflatable globe sails through the space, with suspended dancers running around it, linking hands (a show of global solidarity? Or simply a feat of acrobatics?). Next there's a man in a glass tunnel, floating and spinning in a gravity-defying relentless upward wind, surrounded by fluttering confetti and lit in changing colours. Everyone is filming it –production notes actually encourage us to film and share visuals from the show, and these fast, breathtaking fragments seem almost designed for social media. A glass cube descends, with a woman crawling around in water inside it; a man appears on the underside of the cube and they splash each other. Then there's a dance: four performers seem to glide through the

“A vast and biblical whale wobbles through the air”

crowd above our head as if on a moving platform, all impossibly fast footwork and synchronised movement. And then the climax: a vast and biblical whale wobbles through the air, inflating and deflating, with two (trapped?) dancers inside, visible through a window. It's an extraordinary spectacle, and a hugely enjoyable one. DJs take over once the performers leave, and some late nights are scheduled.

ABSOLUTELY eats out…

Coal Office

We were fully expecting to be seated inside. The Coal O ce –the restaurant at Tom Dixon’s Coal Drops Yard headquarters – opened its summer terrace without much faith in the weather. But on our visit, on the most summery evening of the year so far, everyone is clamouring for an outside table, and we feel hugely lucky to have one. The terrace is shady and stylish, set back from busy

Granary Square but overlooking it; we feel like we’ve got the best seats in the house. Chatty, friendly and knowledgable sta have a likeably casual approach, setting the tone for an excellent evening. The restaurant is a collaboration with Israeil chef Assaf Granit, who promises a journey of culinary discovery. We’re happy to go with our lovely waiter’s recommendations on the intriguing menu. So first o there’s a dip: tahini and schug, which is creamy with a herby marinade, delicious with a flu y Yemeni brioche. Then aubergine tartare is made up of raw and

“Dishes full of clever notes and considered elements”

cooked aubergine, plus a puree of the blackened skin, and Nablus Gate salad is a textured and flavourful mix of herbs, rocket, grapes and labneh, with crunchy pieces of pita and pomengranate seeds. A red tuna sashimi is covered in tiny cubes of carosello cucumber, which is new to me, a cross between a melon and a cucumber, we’re told. Then there’s a small kilner jar containing polenta – this is a best-selling dish and devised originally by a happy accident of market ingredients –and the combination of asparagus, mushrooms and parmesan with a hint of tru e creates a creamy, decadent treat. Next we’re onto the large plates – frankly, we don’t need two at this point, but they are both very much worth it: there’s crispy stone bass with green tomato relish, and lemon sole with pickled green peaches and a beurre blanc that’s laced with tahini. The pickled green peaches are another new discovery, and there’s an unusual sharpness to them that adds another layer of interest. Because all of these dishes are full of clever notes and considered elements. And to finish, pistachio ice cream is perfection.

Recipes for an unprocessed diet

White chicken chilli

Feeds 4

Takes 1 hour 10 minute

A tomato-less chilli, hence the name ‘white chilli’. I use yellow peppers here to keep the chilli ‘white’ but use whatever colour you can find. Use whatever white beans you like, such as cannellini or butter beans. I find sweetcorn is always worth keeping in the freezer, but if you’ve got tinned sweetcorn, then drain, rinse and add it right at the end.

INGREDIENTS

• 4 bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs

• 2 tbsp olive oil, plus extra if needed

• 2 onions, finely chopped

• 2 yellow peppers, diced

• 4 garlic cloves, finely sliced

• 2 tsp ground cumin

• 1 tsp dried oregano

• 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper or chilli flakes

• 1.2 litres vegetable or chicken stock

• 2 x 400g tins of white beans, drained

• 200g frozen sweetcorn

• Juice of 1 lime, plus a little zest if you like

• Sea salt and black pepper

Optional toppings

• Soured cream or yoghurt

• Fresh coriander and/or spring onions

• Sliced avocado

• Sliced radishes or cucumber

• Lime wedges

• Jarred jalapeno slices or chilli flakes

METHOD

1 Season the chicken thighs on both sides with salt. Heat the olive oil in a large pot and, once warm, add the chicken thighs, skin-side down. Cook for 10–12 minutes over a medium-high heat until very well browned, then turn and cook on the other side for 2–3 minutes. Lift out of the pot and set aside on a large plate.

Big veg noodle salad

with lime, ginger and peanut dressing

Feeds 2 Takes 15 minutes

2 The chicken should have given out plenty of fat but if not, add a splash of olive oil to the pot and, once warm, add the onions, peppers and a pinch of salt and pepper. Fry for about 12 minutes over a medium heat until very soft.

3 Add the garlic, fry for a minute, then add the cumin, oregano and cayenne or chilli flakes and fry for 2 minutes, stirring regularly.

4 Return the chicken thighs to the pot and pour in the stock. Simmer for 25 minutes, then add the beans and cook for another 10 minutes. Once cooked through, take the meat o the bones and shred. Set aside, discarding the chicken skin if you wish.

5 Use a potato masher or the back of your wooden spoon to crush roughly a third of the beans (this will help thicken the chilli). Add the frozen sweetcorn, then cook for 5 minutes or so until tender.

6 Remove from the heat, add the chicken, lime juice, plus a little zest if you like, and taste for seasoning. Ladle into bowls and finish with the toppings you like.

Even in the colder months, I think a big noodle salad is always a great thing to have up our sleeves. In the depths of winter, in and amongst all the cheesy bakes and big soups and stews, I crave fresh, zingy, crunchy salads like this. Use any noodles you like, even spaghetti would work if that’s what you’ve got. I love buckwheat (soba) noodles. Swap the peanuts and peanut butter for cashews or almonds if you prefer.

INGREDIENTS

• 2 nests of noodles

• 2 tsp toasted sesame oil

• 2 big handfuls of raw peanuts

• 1 large carrot, cut into ribbons with a peeler or cut into thin strips with a knife

• ¼ sweetheart cabbage, very thinly sliced

• 1 small apple or pear, cored and cut into matchsticks

• ½ small cucumber, diced

For the dressing

• 2 tbsp smooth or crunchy peanut butter

• 2 big limes: zest of 1 and juice of both

• 2 tbsp tamari or soy sauce

• Thumb of fresh ginger, finely grated

• Pinch of chilli flakes

• 2 tsp maple syrup

• Sea salt and black pepper

METHOD

1 Do the lime trick to release more juice by rolling the limes on the kitchen counter before you slice them in half.

2 For the dressing, whisk all the ingredients in a small bowl or shake in a jam jar. Taste for seasoning.

3 Cook the noodles according to the packet instructions, then drain and rinse immediately with cold water.

4 Toss the noodles with the sesame oil and set aside.

5 Toast the peanuts in a dry frying pan over a medium heat for 3–5 minutes, shaking the pan every so often, until golden.

6 In a large bowl, toss together the noodles, carrot, cabbage, apple or pear and roughly half the dressing.

7 Slowly add more splashes of dressing if you like, tossing as you go, until everything is nicely coated.

8 Top with the cucumber and peanuts.

Cherry almond ‘Bakewell’ granola

Makes 2 large jars Takes 45 minutes

The combination of almonds and cherries gives this granola major Bakewell tart vibes! If you’re as much of a granola household as we are, you may want to make double, from our experience this goes in a flash!

INGREDIENTS

• 250g rolled oats

• 125g pumpkin seeds

• 100g whole almonds

• 100ml olive oil

• 80ml maple syrup

• 1 tbsp ground cinnamon

• ⅛ tsp sea salt

• 100g dried sour cherries

METHOD

1 Preheat the oven to fan 180ÅãC/ gas mark 6. Line a large baking tray with baking parchment.

2 Weigh all the ingredients, except the sour cherries into a large

mixing bowl. (The sour cherries don’t get baked because they would burn in the oven, you’ll stir them through the granola later.)

3 Mix well so that all the dry ingredients are evenly coated with the wet ingredients.

4 Spread out on the lined baking tray and bake for 30–40 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes for the first 20 minutes, then every 5 minutes for the second 10–20 minutes.

5 Allow to cool completely on the baking tray, then stir through the sour cherries. Store in airtight containers for up to 3 weeks.

It showcases the brand's chic industrial aesthetic, featuring signature elements such as a motorbike and pool table, welcoming customers into the casual and cool space.

Knightsbridge is home to luxury shopping destinations, five-star hotels and high-profile restaurants. Breitling’s latest boutique joins a wealth of prestigious designer brands and shops along Brompton Road, the very heart of Knightsbridge. The new two-storey showroom features the watchmaker’s full collections, which visitors are invited to explore alongside a fully stocked bar and pool table. Watch

collections range from limited editions to the latest must-have timepieces for both men and women. The store marks a new milestone for the brand, but is instantly recognisable through Breitling’s signature industrial-chic aesthetic and architectural details – such as exposed brick and steel and walnut finishes. Founded in 1884, Breitling is a leading Swiss watchmaker. The innovative company invented the modern chronograph and pioneered the navigational-tool watch. Today, it’s still breaking new ground as a casual, inclusive, and sustainable luxury brand with more than 260 industrial-loft-inspired retail locations around the world. Breitling’s collections center around air, land and sea pursuits, all captured in the brand’s unmistakable modern-retro style. The exceptional quality of every watch movement is confirmed by its status as a COSC-certified chronometer, and the brand remains one of only a handful of independent watchmakers to produce its own manufacture calibres. Today, Breitling is on a mission to do better, by creating beautiful products and experiences with better materials, better manufacturing, better packaging, and end-to-end traceability. Combining classic watchmaking with the latest and most suitable innovations, Breitling is both a company with history and one that is ahead of its time.

FOCUS ON Blepharoplasty

What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) removes excess skin around the eyes. On the upper eyelid this can cause a ‘hooded’ appearance. Surgery tightens the supportive structures which naturally lose elasticity with age to achieve a more alert and youthful appearance. It is one of the most commonly performed aesthetic procedures.

Why is it so popular?

• The results are permanent

• The results are subtle and scars can be hidden in the folds of the eye

• It can boost self confidence as it is very difficult to disguise sagging, protruding fat pads, folds and deep lines

t’s a sunny Friday morning when I visit John Frieda on Aldford Street in Mayfair. With a glossy white marbled interior, the stylish salon has a buzzy atmosphere ahead of the weekend. I’m booked in with the lovely Grace and Nadia for balayage and a cut. Grace gets me settled and we discuss colour. I’ve had foilyage in the past, but want to achieve a very natural look. Grace suggests a tailored approach using both foils and freehand painting – a balance of precise and blended. It’s this bespoke service that sets John Frieda apart from other salons. I opt for a warm strawberry blonde to brighten up my skin tone for summer. Grace and I chat away as she works, and she constantly checks in to make sure I’m happy with what she’s doing. Once she’s finished, she brings me a little bottle of toner and explains how I can use it at home to brighten up my colour as and when I want. Next, I have a K18 mask – a bioactive peptide treatment to strengthen and improve my hair’s elasticity. I relax at the basin, enjoying the dreamy head massage. Back at the mirror, Nadia and I talk about the shape of my hair. I’m trying to grow it, so she suggests keeping the length, but shaping it softly around my face. Nadia and I have a lovely chat and after a trim, she gives me a big bouncy blow dry. I couldn’t be happier with the results and my hair feels strong, glossy, and revived. Several weeks on, my colour still looks great and the condition has really lasted. I’ll definitely be back to the salon soon.

THE BIG SQUEEZE

Why we should all be juicing for health and longevity

Juicing, the process of extracting juice from fresh fruits and vegetables, has gained popularity as a health trend. Advocates claim numerous benefits ranging from improved nutrient intake to enhanced digestion. Here are some key benefits of incorporating juicing into your diet:

NUTRIENT DENSITY

Juicing can provide a concentrated source of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. When you juice fruits and vegetables, you can consume a larger quantity than you might be able to eat whole. This means you can get a significant amount of nutrients in a single glass, which can contribute to better overall health. Nutrients like vitamin C, vitamin K, folate, and potassium are abundant in various fruits and vegetables and are essential for bodily functions.

IMPROVED DIGESTION AND NUTRIENT ABSORPTION

Juicing breaks down fruits and vegetables into a liquid form, which can be easier for

your digestive system to process. This can be particularly beneficial for people with digestive issues or for those who struggle to eat enough whole fruits and vegetables. The nutrients in juice are quickly absorbed into the bloodstream, providing a rapid nutritional boost.

DETOXIFICATION

Juicing is often promoted as a way to detoxify the body. While the body naturally detoxifies through the liver, kidneys, and skin, consuming juices rich in antioxidants and nutrients can support these processes. Ingredients like leafy greens, beets, and citrus fruits are known for their detoxifying properties and can help in cleansing the body.

WEIGHT MANAGEMENT

Juicing can be an e ective tool for weight management. When incorporated into a balanced diet, juices can serve as lowcalorie, nutrient-rich meal replacements or snacks. However, it's important to be mindful of the sugar content in fruit juices and to balance them with vegetable juices to avoid excessive sugar consumption.

ENHANCED IMMUNE FUNCTION

The vitamins and antioxidants found in freshly made juices can help strengthen the immune system. Vitamin C, found in high levels in citrus fruits and leafy greens, is particularly known for its immune-boosting properties.

INCREASED FRUIT AND VEGETABLE INTAKE

Juicing o ers a convenient way to increase your intake, ensuring you benefit from the wide range of vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients these foods provide. This can contribute to a more balanced and nutritious diet.

IMPROVED ENERGY LEVELS

Many people report increased energy levels when they start juicing. The quick absorption of nutrients provides an immediate energy boost, and the overall improvement in diet quality can lead to sustained energy throughout the day. This can be particularly beneficial for those who experience afternoon energy slumps or rely on ca eine for a pick-me-up. While juicing should not replace whole fruits and vegetables entirely due to the loss of fiber during the juicing process, it can be a valuable addition to a healthy diet. By incorporating a variety of nutrient-dense juices, you can enhance your overall health, support bodily functions, and enjoy a tasty and refreshing way to consume essential vitamins and minerals. Be warned: using a juicer for the first time can be daunting because these are powerful machines, and they can be noisy. We confess to being a bit frightened at first.. but the delicious and nutritious results are worth it. You won't look back: just make sure your model's attachments are dishwasher safe.

HOT STUFF

Summer haircare tips: keeping hair looking

its

best in the heat

As the sun blazes and temperatures soar, your hair can feel the impact. UV rays, saltwater, chlorine, and sweat can lead to dry, damaged, and frizzy hair. However, with a thorough haircare routine, you can keep your locks luscious all summer. Here are some essential tips from Headmasters’ Colour Ambassador Sian Couldridge and Creative Ambassador Clare Hansford.

HOLIDAY PREP

If you are new to colour or prefer a natural look, consider keeping your natural root colour, but adding a few ribbons of colour using tissue lights. This technique provides depth and enhances facial features. Sian explains: “The trick to this colour is keeping a very soft tone that is simply a few shades lighter than your natural colour without going too warm. The great thing about this technique is that it grows out very naturally,

although having a refresh of baby lights at 6 weeks will keep it looking fresh.”

For those wanting shine and subtle colour, Headmasters' Completely Gorgeous colour combination service (from £149) o ers the perfect blend of half a head of highlights and a glossing treatment. This technique creates a natural, sun-kissed look that is perfect for the summer months.

HYDRATE

Just as your body needs hydration, so does your hair. During the summer, it’s crucial to keep your hair moisturized to combat dryness and brittleness. Opt for a salon treatment such as the Awapuhi Hydraplex (£38), created with a rich blend of proteins and natural oils. This treatment deeply nourishes your hair, leaving it soft, smooth, and manageable, even in the hottest weather.

FIGHTING FRIZZ

To help fight frizz and humidity on hot summer days, Clare suggests using the award-winning Colour Wow Dream Coat.

Simply spray Dream Coat onto wet hair and blow-dry or towel dry to create a barrier that repels humidity and moisture. For a more permanent solution, Headmasters o ers the Keratin Smoothing Treatment, providing hair with a lustrous shine, preventing frizz, and smoothing hair for weeks.

SHIELDING

Prolonged sun exposure can cause significant damage to your hair. To protect your hair, wear a hat or scarf when you’re outside for extended periods. Additionally, consider using a leave-in conditioner or hair spray with SPF, such as the Kérastase Soleil Crème UV Sublime. This product provides an extra layer of protection against UV damage.

LIMIT HEAT STYLING

Heat-styling tools like blow dryers, straighteners, and curling irons can worsen the damage caused by the summer heat. If you want to smoothen your hair, use a tool that does not cause heat damage, such as the ghd Duet (£379). This innovative tool allows you to create a smooth and sleek ponytail, keeping hair away from your neck and staying cool without the risk of heat damage.

REPAIR AND RECOVER

On your return from holiday, visit Headmasters for a Nioxin microdermabrasion treatment (£28). Acting like a facial for the scalp, this treatment works wonders for maintaining the health and shine of your hair. It penetrates deeply into the hair shaft, providing much-needed moisture and nutrients while gently removing product build up and dead skin cells.

TShoulder muscle EXERCISES

Why shoulder pain is common, how to avoid it – and what to do about it

he shoulder joint is the most mobile joint in the body, which allows excellent function but makes it prone to injury and painful conditions. When something goes wrong, free movement and mobility can become extremely di cult and, in some cases, impossible. This can really hamper quality of life causing huge amounts of pain and discomfort. The shoulder joint works as a ball-and socket mechanism, with a small and shallow socket and quite a big ball on it. It is inherently unstable and in order to improve its stability we use the rotator cu muscles. This is a group of muscles and tendons that surround the shoulder joint and keep the ball in a stable fulcrum.

If you are experiencing shoulder pain it more often than not means that the rotator cu tendons have become irritated, inflamed or damaged somehow. It can be extremely painful and can make everyday tasks very di cult to complete.

Patients come to me for a number of reasons. They might have damaged their shoulder playing sport – especially contact sports like rugby – or they have fallen o their bike and damaged their shoulder. I also see people who have damaged their shoulder from repetitive exercises, particularly overhead. This causes overuse injuries that manifest

mostly on rotation i.e. impingement. Poor technique when exercising can also cause damage. The second group of patients are the 50+ age group, who are experiencing pain due to general wear and tear, as the soft tissues surrounding the shoulder degenerate with age. In these patients the threshold to overuse is lower and it is easier to cause damage.

In terms of treating the shoulder pain, it depends specifically on what the problem is. Problems caused by rotator cu dysfunction are generally amenable to physiotherapy treatment. This involves a hands-on component, with stretches and massage and an exercise programme designed to improve the function of the rotator cu muscles and thus the dynamic stability of the ball-andsocket joint. Sometimes these exercises can be very painful in an irritated shoulder and cortisone injections can help with the pain and improve the e cacy of the physiotherapy program. 70% of patients with rotator cu pain, without tears, will respond to this form of treatment within three months.

of The Shoulder Practice in Marylebone is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a special interest in upper limb and sports injuries. He has treated many Oscar-winning actors and some of the world’s top professional athletes. theshoulderpractice.com

EXERCISES AND STRETCHES TO RELIEVE SHOULDER PAIN

Try these at home regularly to relieve shoulder aches and pains. However, if your pain is persistent after six weeks, consult your doctor who may put you in touch with a specialist.

1.The Crossbody Pose. Hold the right hand out in front of the body, reach the left hand behind the right elbow and pull the right arm to the left and across the chest. Hold in this position for 30 to 50 seconds and then release. Repeat this stretch 3 to 5 times.

2. The Pendulum Swing. Lean over and supporting your non-injured side with a table or chair. Allow the sore side arm to dangle down. Begin by drawing circles with your hand below – start small and then gradually increase the circles in size. Then perform the same exercise in reverse. Repeat throughout the day three or four times, especially first thing in the morning and last thing at night.

3. The Head Rotation. Sit upright on a firm-backed chair and tilt your chin toward your chest until you feel a deep stretch in the back of your neck. Lean the head to the left and then again to the right to feel the stretch on both sides. Aim for a minute on each side.

BREEZE THROUGH

Carly Glendinning discusses barre and the menopause with Catie Miller, founder of Barre Series

Q What makes barre such a good choice for women going through menopause?

A Through the Barre Series method, we focus on functional movement that safely incorporates strength, lowimpact cardiovascular exercise, and restorative movement. These exercises are crucial for maintaining muscle and overall body longevity. Barre draws from ballet and Pilates principles, making it a safe and highly e ective workout.

Q How does barre help in managing common menopause symptoms?

A Menopause can accompany mood swings, anxiety, and

depression. Exercises such as barre and Pilates trigger the release of endorphins, which are natural mood lifters, and can improve overall mental wellbeing, reducing these symptoms. Many women experience weight gain during menopause due to hormonal changes and a slower metabolism. Exercise can help maintain a healthy weight by burning calories and increasing muscle mass, positively a ecting hormone balance. Exercise can help reduce the frequency and intensity of hot flushes and night sweats, common menopausal symptoms. It may help improve your body's temperature regulation and tolerance to temperature changes.

Q How important is the community aspect of barre classes for women going through menopause?

A Among the various fitness modalities available, barre stands out as particularly e ective in addressing the multifaceted needs of women during menopause, supported by a large and nurturing community. By prioritising self-care, staying active, and connecting with a supportive community, women can navigate menopause with strength, resilience, connectedness, and purpose.

Changing LIVES

A revolution in fitness is underway, thanks to Electro Muscular Stimulation. Absolutely finds out more from Angelique Frank, founder of Body20 UK

Q Can you transform your body with only 20 minutes per week?

A Yes you can! Body20 has opened its first state of the art Electro Muscular Stimulation (EMS) fitness and personal training boutique studio in Fitzrovia. As an international pioneer in o ering this cutting-edge technology, Body20 Fitzrovia seeks to revolutionise the way Londoners achieve their fitness goals.

Q What inspired you to bring Body20 to the UK?

“Low-frequency electrical impulses contract your muscles during exercise and increase

workout intensity”

A I have owned a Body20 Studio in South Africa for eight years which is currently running at capacity, and I find it very fulfilling to literally transform the lives of my clients. While visiting family in London last year, I noticed an apparent lack of EMS fitness centers, as well as how time-poor and rushed most Londoners are. I want to bring Body20 to the UK, at the time when the healthcare system is failing to cater to some chronic conditions, because exercise in itself is an e ective intervention which improves people’s health. Finding the time and right training regimen are common barriers to exercise which Body20 mitigates against. Body20 is a leading international fitness studio chain utilising EMS technology to deliver e cient and e ective workouts in a premium boutique-gym environment. The premium brand was founded in South Africa 10 years ago and is now an international leader in EMS training. We already have hundreds of studios open in the United States, over 60 in Southern Africa as well as many in Belgium and New Zealand too.

BODY20 WORKOUT

Q What makes this kind of training di erent and how does EMS work?

A Body20 utilises EMS to provide a full-body workout in just 20 minutes, equivalent to the results of a traditional four or five hour gym session. This innovative approach is perfect for those with busy schedules who still want to prioritise their health and fitness. EMS works by sending low-frequency electrical impulses to contract your muscles during exercise, increasing workout intensity and activating 98% of your body’s muscles. This technology, used for decades in rehabilitation and performance enhancement of professional athletes, is now available for full-body training, ensuring safe and powerful workouts in a fraction of the time.

Q What makes your o ering unique in the UK market?

A We o er an individualised personal training regimen to every client who walks into our studio. This comes with a set

and visibly noticeable after six to 12 weeks. Scientific studies have shown a 4% reduction in body fat and a 30% increase in strength over a six-week period. Additionally, 89% of participants reported feeling stronger and fitter. In addition to fat loss and increased strength, benefits of EMS training include cellulite reduction, relief from back pain, improved posture, correction of muscular imbalances, increased endurance and strengthening of core and abdominal muscles.

Q What level of fitness does Body20 cater to?

number of EMS sessions per week using dry wireless technology, nutrition analysis, and weekly body composition scans. In the studio, we o er a protein shake post-workout to aid recovery and have towels, showers, toiletries and hair dryers to get the client back to normal life as soon as possible.

Q What happens in a typical class?

A Body20’s classes are designed to be lowimpact and easy on the joints, making them accessible for anyone. Clients wear a wireless, electrode-enabled bodysuit that connects to the EMS device, using the latest dry patented technology, which eliminates the need for water and having to wear a wet, smelly suit. Wireless also increases the variety of workouts that you can do, enabling a high degree of customisation.

Q What results can on expect after training with Body20?

A With a healthy lifestyle and regular EMS classes, results can be felt after just four weeks

A EMS is suitable for all fitness levels and body types, accommodating anyone over the age of 16. Body20 aims to make professional fitness accessible to everyone.

Q Why does one need to commit to a package?

A Body20 has an individualised approach to health and fitness, so most of our clientele become like family and are usually members for life. Those just starting their transformation journey may benefit from 2-3 classes per week, while those already in fairly good shape may find 1 class per week su cient. Your Body20 coach will provide tailored recommendations based on your body composition scan. Once our clients have reached their own unique goals, most incorporate 1 EMS class per week as an on-going part of their lifestyle to maintain their transformation results.

The LOWDOWN

Electro Muscular Stimulation 101

Q How does EMS work?

A EMS (Electro Muscular Stimulation) sends low-frequency electrical impulses to contract your muscles while you exercise, increasing the intensity of your workout which activates 98% of your body’s muscles.

Q Is EMS safe?

A Yes, EMS is completely safe. Scientifically researched and used for decades, EMS was used for both rehabilitation and localized performance enhancements. Your classes are fully supervised by an experienced and certified EMS Personal Trainer who will check that the intensity levels are safe for your individual training regimen. The impulses don’t go deeper than your skeletal muscles so it can’t reach cardiac muscle or internal organs.

Q Who can’t do EMS training?

A Unfortunately, people who are pregnant, have a pacemaker, have a neurological disorder, cancer or acute injury/fever cannot do EMS.

Q How soon can I see results?

A Combined with a healthy lifestyle and depending on how many EMS classes you take per week, results can be felt after just 4 weeks and be visibly noticeable after only

6-12 weeks. Over a 6-week period, scientific studies have shown that a 4% reduction in body fat and a 30% increase in strength is possible. 89% of the participants felt stronger and fitter.

Q How many classes should I do per week?

A If you are not doing any other form of exercise and are not close to reaching your fitness goal, we recommend 2-3 EMS classes per week. If you are in fairly good shape and regularly do another form of exercise, we recommend 1 EMS class per week.

Q What are the benefits of Body20’s EMS?

• Wireless and patented dry EMS kit (as opposed to wet and smelly suits!)

• Strengthen and build lean muscle

• Increase fitness, endurance and energy levels

• Reduce back pain (in as little as three classes)

• Fat loss

• Cellulite reduction

• Correct muscular imbalances

• Speed up post-injury and post-surgery recovery

• Skin tightening

Q Am I too old or too young to enjoy Body20’s EMS classes?

A Body20 o ers training to anyone 16 and above. Our EMS classes are designed

to accommodate all fitness levels, body sizes, age spans and wellness goals.

Q What can I expect in my 1st EMS Class?

A Your personal trainer will assist you to put the Dry EMS Suit on over the training undergarment we will provide for your trial class. During the workout, you will feel a 4 second contraction of your muscles followed by a 4 second release. The electric impulse will start o very weak and your trainer will slowly start to increase the strength level during the 20-minute class according to your tolerance. The actual workout will involve a series of simple exercises such as lunges, squats, bicep curls, abdominal crunches etc. which your personal trainer will demonstrate and check for safety.

Q What should you bring?

A Just yourself! We have everything else that you’ll need including bottled water, sweat towels, showers, towels, toiletries and hair dryers.

Opening hours are 7am – 9pm weekdays and 9am – 3pm on weekends.

THE EYES HAVE IT

Knowing how to treat Macular Disease and Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

The macula, a crucial part of the retina, plays a vital role in clear vision. So various issues with the macula, particularly macular degeneration, can severely impair sight. Macular disease, a broad term encompassing various macula-related problems, is a leading cause of vision loss. The Macular Society reports that about 1.5 million people in the UK are a ected, with around 300 new diagnoses each day, making it the primary cause of sight loss in the country. Macular disease, often referred to as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), impacts people of all ages, although it is more common among older adults. Despite ongoing research and trials supported by donations to the Macular Society, there is currently no cure. Macular disease significantly a ects individuals' ability to perform everyday

tasks, leading to central vision loss and symptoms like distorted straight lines and a gradually expanding "black spot" in the vision field, limiting visibility to the periphery. AMD is the main cause of irreversible sight loss in the UK, particularly a ecting the central field of vision. It is prevalent among older adults, impacting 4.8% of people aged 65 or over and 12.2% of those aged 80 or over. AMD exists in two forms: wet and dry. Early detection is crucial for wet AMD, requiring immediate referral for specialised treatment.

In addressing the challenges of dry AMD, The Eye Place has invested in advanced technology like the Valeda light delivery system by Lumithera. This treatment uses red, yellow, and near-infrared light to stabilize the deeper layers of the macula, slowing the progression of vision loss in upto 80% if individuals (Lightsight I - III studies). This innovative approach aligns with The Eye Place's proactive philosophy on eye health, emphasising that spectacles are only as e ective as the eyes they serve.

Regular eye examinations are essential, especially for individuals over 60, due to the increasing prevalence of age-related eye damage, including macular degeneration. The Eye Place is dedicated to comprehensive eye health, o ering digital recording of deep retinal layers for a thorough assessment of macular and overall eye health.

Understanding the complexities of macular disease and AMD underscores the importance of awareness, proactive care, and advanced technologies in maintaining and enhancing vision.

A DELICATE TOUCH

Why the new Diamond treatment is a cut above the rest

According to experts, the recent surge in rhinoplasty procedures, as reported by the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, can be attributed to significant advancements in medical technology and techniques. The traditional, invasive methods involving hammers and chisels have given way to modern, less traumatic techniques that minimise discomfort, swelling, and recovery time. Key innovations include the use of ultrasound technology and the Diamond Rhinoplasty method, which involves Piezo ultrasonic remodelling. This advanced method of rhinoplasty focuses on preserving as much of the existing structure of the nose as possible during surgery, while safely changing the way you look. These advancements, together with patients being able to resume their normal activities

within six weeks, have contributed to the procedure’s growing popularity. Ultimately, it means that there is significantly less discomfort, swelling and bruising for the patient, making the procedure much more popular.

Consultant Surgeons Charles East and Lydia Badia, co-founders of Rhinoplasty London are the leading specialists in the UK. Held in the highest esteem by both their medical peers and patients, their celebrity clientele includes members of the royal family as well as rugby player and Strictly Come Dancing contestant Ben Cohen.

Commenting on this remarkable rise in popularity, Lydia Badia, Consultant Surgeon and specialist in Rhinology & Facial Plastics explains: “Rhinoplasty was previously a very invasive and crude procedure. It was often performed quickly and blindly from inside the nose with large, heavy instruments. Consequently, patients would su er significant

bruising, facial swelling and discomfort.

“Historically, rhinoplasty was frequently performed in conjunction with other surgical procedures. Patients would often request, ‘While you’re performing my breast and facial surgery, can you also do my nose?’ We see currently that more individuals are opting for rhinoplasty as a standalone treatment. This shift has extended the procedure from 30 minutes, to approximately two and a half hours.

“When more time is allocated to the procedure, it allows for greater precision, resulting in less trauma. The additional time allows the surgeon to respect the correct tissue planes, preserving natural tissue ligaments, minimising disruption to the skin’s envelope, culminating in a much more stable outcome.

“We now possess a deeper understanding of the facial microanatomy, enabling a more accurate application. The evolution of technique includes the Diamond Rhinoplasty, which uses ultrasound for greater precision and minimising damage.

“This revolutionary method - which uses fine delicate tips to move nasal bones without breaking or shattering them - will result in less bruising and faster healing. The nasal bones can be sculpted accurately, preserving the surrounding soft tissues, providing a very natural looking result.

This major advancement known as Piezo ultrasonic remodelling, was pioneered by an Independent Rhinoplasty Research Group in 2014 and remains one of the most reliable techniques, creating smooth, symmetrical nasal bridges and reshaping nasal bones –without the need for a hammer and chisel!”

EVERY FACE tells a story

How to combat the e ects of ageing with consultant plastic surgeon Chris Abela

The face is almost always on show. Blemishes, ageing and life events show up readily on the face, which sometimes a ects confidence. While makeup can go a long way to camouflaging surface issues, it is only temporary and doesn’t help with the changes in facial structure that occur with age.

Stress, lack of sleep, sun damage, diet and dehydration often present on a person’s face; and sometimes premature ageing can simply just be down to a person’s genes. Skin loses elasticity with age, and the skin around the eyes is especially delicate so is particularly susceptible to signs of ageing. These changes and the weakening of supportive structures such as ligaments and muscles causes loose skin and pu y/swollen tissue in the under eye areas. In more severe cases, folds

of skin can overhang the eyelids or cheeks, causing irritation or impacting vision.

Surgery is the most definitive option to address excess skin and fat and re-support the structures.

Eyelid surgery is a common cosmetic and reconstructive surgery yielding very good results creating a more alert and refreshed natural appearance, whilst correcting any asymmetry.

Chris Abela is a consultant plastic surgeon, experienced in facial cosmetic surgery. He runs a private practice with clinics at 84 Harley Street, 102 Sydney Street, Chelsea and at Wimbledon Parkside.

Care and treatments

Q How did ZoBu come about?

A I've been in the aesthetics industry for 22 years and during my career I have seen this industry undergo a massive transformation thanks to advancing technologies and noninvasive treatments. At top-tier medical spas in London, I learned first-hand that using di erent technologies during a single treatment can deliver incredible results, faster. However, no spa was able to provide that flexibility. Clients had to buy di erent packages and arrange for multiple machines to be used at the same time, which was expensive and inconvenient. And then, during Covid, many clients found it di cult to manage clinic appointments and became more focused on safety, health and convenience.

ZoBu was born by addressing these two issues and by recognising a significant gap in the market for at-home luxury aesthetics. We bring the latest machine-based treatments to your doorstep and only use the most experienced aestheticians. By eliminating the need to leave your home and making the entire process easy and time-e cient, our service fits around your schedule and personal needs, o ering unmatched convenience and comfort.

Q What's your background?

A Prior to founding ZoBu, I worked at London's top clinics, which allowed me to gain access and experience with the best products, suppliers, and aestheticians. These experiences equipped me with the knowledge and skills necessary to create a more

HOME comforts

The

new service that is taking over London, ZoBu brings machine-based beauty directly to your doorstep. Absolutely chats to founder Zoe Budd

personalised and convenient aesthetic service, ultimately leading to the inception of ZoBu.

Q What are the advantages of having treatments at home?

A It eliminates the hassle of traveling to a clinic and the discomfort of travelling home when your skin is red, uncomfortable and/or sensitive to the sunlight.

At home, you can relax in your own space, and the peaceful environment allows for a more comfortable experience. Home treatments are easily integrated into your schedule. We bring all the equipment, the bed and towels.

Q What are your most popular treatments?

A I can't tell you how many women approach us with concerns about loose skin on knees and inner thighs! For this, I love to work with High Intensity Focused Ultrasound to stimulate collagen and elastin, perfect for these aging areas. Treatments for cellulite and fat reduction are also popular, I combine

shockwave therapy with Radiofrequency and Micro compression vibration therapy which e ectively works on water retention, cellulite and skin tightening. When I finish the thigh treatment I include some time in the infrared sauna blanket which helps to speed up the process to eliminate toxins. The "Skin Flood" facial is a favourite for summer, it's a Korean Mesotherapy packed with 55 hydrating and anti-aging ingredients infused into the skin with micro needles and finished o with LED light therapy.

Q And what are the most innovative ones?

A One of our most innovative treatments is the Hair Exosomes therapy. This cuttingedge treatment uses organic hair exosomes to stimulate hair growth and rejuvenate hair follicles. It's an excellent solution for those experiencing hair thinning and loss, particularly popular with my male clients.

Q What areas do you cover?

A Our main service regions include Chelsea, Kensington, St John's Wood, Hampstead, Belgravia, Mayfair, Knightsbridge and Notting Hill.

change. Although Caroline Balazs’ name may not be as well-known as the mightily successful ‘SkinnyJab’ company that she founded, the impact of her business has stretched far beyond the Manchester-based GP where she first came up with the idea of her brand. ‘SkinnyJab’ was founded in 2017 and has subsequently helped over 30,000 patients to lose weight. Caroline’s client base includes A-list celebrities from around the globe, many of whom have publicly praised the programme and its incredible results. Caroline has helped the British public to lose tonnes of fat since first discovering her miracle weight loss injections. It was during Caroline Balazs’ time working in a GP surgery in Manchester in 2017, where she realised how unhappy many of her patients were. Caroline always struggled to lose weight. She had tried multiple harsh regimes and fads but her e orts were not paying o , until one day a medication came into the spotlight, one which people knew very little about: a diabetes drug, recently licensed for weight loss. Caroline explains that “the drug mimics the natural hormones that signal to the brain that you are full and the cravings that derail most diets are controlled.” As it was so new at the time, Caroline made sure

she did her research. She investigated what the medication was doing to her body, and found it was in fact, good for your health. As well as working to prevent diabetes, she found it could also reduce blood pressure and cholesterol. In recent times, the drug has also been approved by the NHS which gave Caroline the confidence of how e ective these medications truly are.

Caroline explains “The obesity crisis is a problem that is not going away, and we must find a way to tackle this growing epidemic.

Over the past few years, SkinnyJab has re-grouped with a new brand team to bring a complete wellbeing element to the brand. The focus isn’t just placed on making people ‘skinny’, but instead it is about encouraging healthy habits and better lifestyle choices eating, exercise and selfcare. Caroline is now back with her flagship Harley Street clinic where she meets with patients to devise tailored and specific dosages and weight loss programmes.

SOPHIE

A VIBRANT HOME

Designer Lucinda Sanford talks us through this impressive Clapham project

Q Tell us about the project. What was the brief and what was the house like when you first saw it?

A The flat was lived in but looking very sad and unloved. The client, who loves to entertain and worked from home on a regular basis, wasn’t able to do either very successfully as the spaces weren’t working for her. The flat felt dark and unloved.

Q There’s a lot of glass. How does that a ect the space?

A The internal glass allowed us to create important zones to the large otherwise open plan reception area – a space for television and relaxing and then the large cooking/dining space. The external elevation used the same crittal too.

Q There’s also a lot of green. The palette’s very distinctive. Was that hard to get right?

A The front of the property followed a blue tonal vibe with the strong blue hallway –we then migrated to the green in the rear extension. It’s really important that the

blue was still threaded through so you felt the whole property was joined. The pendant over the table for example is blue so you see that from the hallway, the blue ottoman too brings in the rest of the house. The green is used tonally so you get this layering e ect rather then just one shade. We were also able to break the paint and fabric fcolours by adding the oak kitchen.

Q Tell us about the fabricstt

A There are rather a lot. We started with the green velvet soda from sofa. com and then worked with the green of the crittal doors. I always love to included a bit of leopard prints in a property as it adds pattern and fun – the Colefax on the chair is a classic. Guy Goodfellows stripe on the ottoman is a classic fabric too, informal but still smart.

Q How was the bobbin e ect on the door frames achieved?

A With a lot of patience! We purchased the bobbins from Decowood and then cut them into the correct lengths. They were then all painted and then nailed to the walls – then painted again to cover the small nails (glue just wouldn’t last as well). On the skirting we had to use a plain MDF board below the bobbin as the bobbin touching the floor wouldn’t work, it also raised it up and gave it more visability.

Q What challenges did you face during the project?

A As ever – working in London in a flat is confined and hard work. Access issues are tight and we need to work really well as team to keep the site clear and tidy.

Q What are you most pleased with?

A That the flat is fun and interesting but also classic enough to stand the test of time.

“The green is used tonally so you get this layering e ect rather then just one shade”

Following the ongoing success of its limited-edition Art Deco poster collections, first launched in 2010, Pullman Editions is o ering, for the first time in history, the original artworks used to create its poster designs.

Art Deco as an art form has never been more popular – think opening credits of Poirot - having gone from ‘niche’ to ‘musthave’ in a generation. Founder Georgina Khachadourian has commissioned over 100 exclusive poster artworks from Pullman’s artists. “Charles Avalon is our most popular artist’, says Georgina. “His Art Deco renderings are the quintessential decorative art.” These original artworks are now being o ered for sale.

With several of its limited-edition posters now sold out, Pullman Editions are o ering a unique opportunity to purchase the original paintings used to create the lithographs. Each hand-painted artwork measures 60x84 cms and has been painted in gouache on art board. Protected with a 4ply ivory acid-free window mount, each painting is priced at £5,950.

Posters – once described as ‘a visual shout’ – proved an attractive, e ective means of promotion and ‘at-a-glance’ display. RICHES

A focus on the humble tea towel from five designers at SCP

Think tea towels are boring? Think again. SCP has commissioned a new collection of tea towels and trays from designers Reiko Kaneko, Daniel Eatock, Donna Wilson, Stewart Easton, and Mark McGinnis and the resulting collection blends functionality with artistic flair, proving that the mundane can definitely be beautiful.

1. DANIEL EATOCK’S designs are inspired by the fascinating marks created by Magic Markers, a nod to the moments spent watching his father draw in the 1980s. His work captures the essence of those spontaneous and magical marks, translating them into contemporary designs. He said: “I loved watching my Dad draw with Magic Markers in the 1980’s, and discovering the consequential marks the pens made on the sheets of paper that sat below the page he was working on. Even though the ‘Magic Markers’ of the 1980’s are no more, today’s markers still contain ‘magic’ within. I remove their tops, stand them upright, and carefully balance sheets of paper on their nibs, abracadabra…”

2. MARK MCGINNIS takes a cosmic approach, reflecting on the universe’s history and the creation of the Solar System. His towels humorously bridge the gap between the vastness of space and everyday household items, adding a touch of whimsy to the collection. He said: “The universe was mostly hydrogen for 9.2 billion years when gravity and temperatures millions of degrees combined with pressures from millions of atmospheres ignited our Sun to create the Solar System. 4.5 billion years later, I’ve designed some towels.“

3. REIKO KANEKO’S designs are inspired by a dahlia from her garden, featuring ghostly depth achieved through refined painting techniques. The artist has explored pâte-sur-pâte technique, enhancing it with a new digital process, resulting in intricate pieces that blend classic methods with modern innovation. She said: “The dahlia that inspired this was inherited by me when I moved into my current garden. Originally painted with bone china slip on bone china which gives the flower a ghostly appearance and depth. I’ve now painted this flower thousands of times. “

4. DONNA WILSON brings a playful touch to the collection. Her designs feature whimsical brushstrokes and vibrant colours, merging

traditional craftsmanship with modern aesthetics. Her pieces are a celebration of the joy of creativity. She siad: “With a wonky brushstroke I try to create designs that blend whimsy and craftsmanship. My work features playful colour and pattern reflecting a fusion of traditional and modern design principles, capturing the essence of the handmade.”

5. STEWART EASTON explores the interplay of colour and form, creating designs that are deliberately o -kilter yet harmonious. His bold use of colour blocks results in dynamic and engaging patterns that draw the eye and spark the imagination. He said: “I like to play with the ways in which we can lay colour blocks in such a way that the tone is slightly o -kilter and busy. Almost like the colours shouldn’t sit together. In the end - harmony.”

Established in London in 1985 by Sheridan Coakley, SCP is a pioneer in the modern British design scene, known for taking traditional typologies and reinventing them for the modern era. SCP designs have a classic understated elegance, with good style and line. They are all made to exceptionally high standards from natural materials, using both traditional methods and advanced manufacturing techniques.

GET OFF OIL

Three reasons to swap your oil boiler for a heat pump from the experts at Good Energy

Over 850,000 homes across the UKhave oil central heating. But with 78% of oil-heated households* having been let down by their heating in the past five years, people are looking into alternatives that are greener, more cost e ective and more reliable. In fact, the majority of people in oil-heated households would consider switching to a heat pump. Here are three reasons why you should do just that:

1

HEAT PUMPS ARE GREENER THAN OIL BOILERS

Heating an average home using oil results in carbon emissions of5,200kga year. That’s more than two return flights from London to New York. On top of the carbon emissions from the boiler itself, heating oil comes with the added environmental impact of being delivered by truck.

In comparison, if you replaced your oil boiler with a heat pump running on grid electricity, it would generatejust 850kgof carbon emissions a year – a huge 83% reduction. This goes down further if you power your heat pump with solar panels or a 100% renewable electricity tari .

2

HEAT PUMPS ARE CHEAPER TO RUN THAN AGEING OIL BOILERS

Oil prices are volatile, influenced by external factors including weather, supply and demand and conflict. In 2023 prices ranged from£0.57/litre in June to £0.82/litre in December, leaving households with large bills if they ran out while the price was high.

Heat pumps are powered by electricity. The heat pumps Good Energy install have an average e ciency of 340%, meaning that for every one unit of electricity they use, they provide 3.4 units of heat for your home.

This means that they are much cheaper to run than ageing oil boilers (£275 a year cheaper for an average 3 bed home, based on oil costing 70p/litre**).

With Government grants of £7,500 available to help with the upfront cost, heat pumps are cheaper to install than many people think too.

3

HEAT PUMPS ARE MORE RELIABLE THAN OIL BOILERS

In a survey commissioned by Good Energy, 58% of people polled had been let down by their heating in the past five years. This figure rose to 78% for households with oil-fired heating*.

Heat pumps are highly reliable and require little maintenance outside of the annual service. Good Energy’s come with a 10-year manufacturer warranty and a 2-year workmanship warranty, giving you peace of mind for many years to come. With a typical lifespan of 15-20 years, heat pumps last longer than oil boilers too.

FORTE DEI MARMI
Marmi,

COSTAL CHIC

The many

attractions

of Tuscan seaside resort Forte dei Marmi

When you think of Tuscany, do you picture rolling hills and lush countryside? Vineyards, olive groves, romantic villas? That’s certainly Tuscany, but along the coastline, things are a little di erent. Within an hour of landing at Pisa airport, I’m riding a pastel blue bicycle along a wide, flat stretch next to the sea, feeling like I’m in Nice, or Miami Beach. This is Forte dei Marmi, a Tuscan beach resort that’s popular with holidaying Italians as well as an international wealthy community, and it’s a gem of a destination. It's an extremely stylish place. We see it from the air before we arrive: a striking aerial view of the long, wide beach filled with tidy rows of umbrellas, each beach club with its own signature colour. The beach is the draw here – a long stretch of soft sand, almost entirely carved up into zoned beach clubs. Loungers are for rent by the day or for the

entire season, and beach clubs range from the merely chic to the o -the-scale glamorous. And in the pedestrianised town centre, shops are exclusively of the luxury variety, with boutiques including Prada, Gucci and Missoni attracting a well-heeled crowd. However, with no harbour, Forte de Marmi is visibly missing the superyacht crowd, and there are no cruise ship daytrippers either. We happily spend a day lounging on the beach and swimming in the lovely Mediterranean, and another day exploring the coastline by car. It’s fascinating to see the Carrara mountains and their marble mines, with vast rectangular slabs of cut marble stacked up and ready to load onto containers for export. Forte de Marmi translates as ‘marble fortress’ and the coastal road was built for the transport of marble. Pavements and shop interiors feature lots of marble –the grey, veiny stu , because the pure white marble (used for instance by Michelangelo for David and beloved of the Medicis) ran out some time ago. Currently there’s enough marble in Carrara left for another 2,000

LA SERENA GARDEN

years, according to Wikipedia, so Forte dei Marmi’s fortunes are secure for the time being. It’s a short drive up the Riviera into Liguria, where attractions include the postcard-perfect Cinque Terre– five small fishing villages where colourful houses built into the rugged coastline attract visitors in their hordes – while a bit further towards Genoa there’s the beautiful seaside town of Portofino. But driving – and the stresses of parking – doesn’t compare to the joy of cycling along the wide, flat avenues of Forte dei Marmi itself, so our days are spent soaking up the delights of the town, accompanied by seafood, pizza and Campari spritz.

We’re staying at La Serena, a newly reopened and upgraded hotel, a few streets away from the pedestrianised centre of town and moments from the seafront. It’s a small place with a focus on art and an artist in residence programme, evident in the mix of artworks on the walls everywhere. There’s a colourful, stylish interior and a lush garden shaded by Tuscany’s iconic and improbably tall Stone Pine trees, and a kidney-shaped pool surrounded by colourful, squashy loungers and bright, oversized umbrellas. The garden is framed by bright banana palms and dotted with large sofas, Ibiza-style. Our room, on the top floor, has wonderful views of the garden and out to the sea, and as well as a vast, comfortable bed and stylish design-led accessories (a bright red Illy espresso machine, an Alessi kettle and

“Beach clubs range from the merely chic to the off-the-scale glamorous”

– something I’ve never found in a hotel room before – a massage gun) there’s an enormous and impressive bathroom, made almost entirely out of local marble, featuring two huge showers and a supersized bathtub. The only thing not made out of marble is the Japanese loo, which divides opinions. Some love it, others not so much, and I’m not sure that a heated seat is really necessary in a Tuscan summer.

In the hotel lobby I flick through Assouline’s beautiful outsize book dedicated to Forte dei Marmi, which relates the history of the town through holidays. It’s full of people’s memories of childhood summers spent on the beach, holidaying here for the whole month of August, with a mix of bucket and spade-type fun and tales of glamorous, celebrity-filled nightlife. Beach huts and bicycles remain emblems of this appealing place, and it’s easy to imagine why you’d want to spend the whole of August here. Maybe one day we will.

Rooms at La Serena start from 252 EUR based on two adults sharing a double room on a B&B basis. The property is open to guests from April 24 to October 26. laserenahotel.it

A new book o ers a comprehensive guide to the Paris flea market

Painting of Women and Two Children from The Paris Flea Market - Photo © Toby Glanville
“Every one of the individual markets has its own niche and speciality”

Stretching out over almost five acres at the northern gates of Paris, just beyond the boulevard périphérique, or ring road, lies the world’s most epic antiques, collectibles and junk market. A wild and sprawling city within a city, strange and enchanted, the Puces de Paris Saint-Ouen flea market is without equivalent in the world. The Puces, taken as a whole, requires you to correct your vision; to adjust eyes that have been trained by the 21st century, in the tidy shops, malls, catalogues and e-shops of the West, loaded with their perfect industrially made products, uniform and predictable, available in every size and colour. The Puces asks you to upturn typical shopping habits, to favour instinct over advertising, personality over perfection, eccentricity over good taste, mystery over rationality, one-o.and hand-made over factory-made, yesterday over tomorrow, mess over order, and poetry over business. This curious and crazy place evolved out

of a unique conjunction of circumstances –geographical, cultural, and political – catalysed by Baron Eugene von Haussmann’s radical modernization of Paris that began in 1853. Shopping the Puces today takes you through eleven di erent markets that function like a collection of tiny neighbourhoods, each with its own history and identity. It’s like a delightful favela with very little architectural harmony, modern comfort or conventional beauty, whose eccentricity only adds to its charm. Every one of the individual markets has its own niche and speciality. Marché Vernaison, the original, looks like what you’d imagine when you hear the words ‘flea market’: a picturesque tangle of alleyways lined with about 250 rickety little stands selling all sorts of bric-à-brac. Stretching over practically 9,000square metres, it’s the biggest market in thePuces. Opposite Vernaison, the two-storey, glass-roofed Marché Dauphine opened in 1991 and presents a mix of pop-culture ephemera – records, posters, postcards, books, comics – vintage fashion and accessories, and quality antiques. TheMarché Biron, which dates back to 1925, ups the bling factor with a red carpet along its long central avenue, as if it were Cannes during festival time. Biron was the ,rst to sell restored old objects and today specializes in high-end ‘antiquités classiques’, meaning pre-Modern, pre-twentieth-century pieces. There’s been a major cultural shift at the Puces over the past couple of decades, as twentieth-century furniture overtakes classique, for so long the lifeblood here. Today, the Marché Paul Bert and the adjacent Marché Serpette – a former carpark converted in the 70s – both specializing in twentieth-century goods, are thePuces’ most design-forward and high-pro,le markets. The long, covered Marché Jules Vallès opened in 1938 and is reputed for having good deals and a rapid turnover of unrestored pieces, attracting many dealers. The Marché L’Usine next door is also more business-to-business, open in principle

to professionals only, on weekdays, when the rest of the market is closed. A handful of other, smaller markets complete the picture, including the Marché Malik with its fake Balenciaga and Jacquemus, Nikes or RayBans. The Puces has always been home to an important number of Jewish dealers, dating back to a wave of immigration from Russia in the late 1800s. Many of these immigrants were tailors, hat makers, or dealers in secondhand clothing who found a natural home here. If the trade at a few of the established markets at the Puces is today exceptionally noble and refined, five market streets – Rue Jules Vallès, Rue Lecuyer, Rue Paul Bert, Rue des Rosiers and Impasse Simon – are home to a mix of makeshift stands, shops, and pavement sellers. Everything imaginable that can be sold or collected is found here. Old valves. Sweat socks. Spent ammunition shells. Shoelaces. Doll’s heads. Why not? Everybody’s trash is somebody’s treasure.

How a negelcted Chateau in the Languedoc became a stylish holiday destination

Words PENDLE HARTE

What makes up the perfect day? For me, a dream day would go something like this. Wake up in the south of France to blue skies in a beautiful 19th century chateau. After co ee, cycle a scenic, car-free route to the beach for a swim in the sea, followed by a leisurely seafood lunch –and then another gentle cycle back to the chateau to sample some local wines. Sound good? If so, a trip to Chateau Capitoul in the Langedoc might create your perfect day too. Chateau Capitoul is the kind of place that combines simplicity with luxury in a carefully designed way. The site was taken on by charismatic Irish hotelier couple Karl and Anita O’Hanlon and they’ve approached it with huge passion. They took a neglected, rundown chateau attached to a family-run vineyard and a pine forest and made it into a smart destination

“There’s more to the south of France than Provence”

that features a hotel, two restaurants, a spa, a pool and a working vineyard, along with a collection of holiday homes. The location, in a natural park on the edge of the Massif de la Clape in the heart of the Languedoc, is an area of great natural beauty; it’s a short distance to the beach and within easy striking distance of Narbonne, Beziers and Montpellier.

The new builds are carefully designed to blend into the landscape while creating luxurious residences that feel almost like a village. The model is clever – these holiday homes are all privately owned, and the estate takes care of the holiday lets on behalf of the owners, who generally visit for a few weeks each year. Everything has been designed with careful consideration – the restoration of the chateau, the hotel’s impressive new reception building, the pools and the gardens. Particularly the gardens: when they first bought the site, there was concern from local environmentalists that construction would negatively impact the area’s biodiversity. The area is home to at least one type of endangered lizard as well as bats and countless birds, and any development of the land had to take that into account. So in fact, the new estate and its grounds have more biodiversity now than it did before, thanks to protective measures and a sensitive approach. There are lizard hotels and bat caves, and bird numbers are up. Another concern was water – how to create a newly landscaped plot without using vast quantities of water? The genius solution: a Mediterranean dry garden. There are no sprinklers here, because Capitoul is now home to the area’s largest dry garden, thanks to a method of encouraging roots to grow so deep that once established – after a year – they require no watering at all. And what to do here? On the estate there’s a pool and tennis courts (most of the villas have their own private pools too) as well as

a spa o ering a full programme of relaxing facials and massages as well as a pool, sauna and hammam. Take a bike out – there are regular ones for the cruise to the beach, and electric mountain bikes to take the other way, into the hilly Massif de la Clape. Gruissan is a sweet beach town with a lively market and the seafront is notable for its pink salt flats (don’t miss the excellent salt museum with its brilliant shop). The huge sandy beach with its huts on stilts might be familiar as the location for the film Betty Blue and busy seafood restaurant La Cambuse du Saunier is an improbably dreamy spot. It’s right on the seafront, and there are even tables on a jetty overlooking the pink lake. Back at the estate, take a tour of the winery and learn about the entire grape-to-bottle process. The Bonfils family has been producing wine here for 150 years, and vines have grown here since the 14th century.

The O’Hanlons are committed environmentalists and everything is considered. There’s not much beef on the menus – instead they’ll recommend the excellent Black Pork from the Pyrennees. There are Nespresso machines in the rooms, but only because on balance, they result in less wasted co ee per room, as carefully calculated. They’re also keen collectors and their eye for antiques and decor can be seen in the chandeliers, artworks and furnishings in the chateau and the residences. My room in the chateau’s former attic is spacious, stylish and luxurious, with impressive views across the vineyards and the pine forest. It’s a dreamy spot as a place to linger as well as a base from which to explore the ares. Becuase there’s more to the south of France than Provence: the Languedoc is beautiful and varied, and Chateau Capitoul o ers the very best of the region.

BIG adventures

A trusted provider of school trips, PGL also o ers brilliant Kids’ Adventure Camps – fun, memory making and new skills for them, time o for you

PGL is go-to name for schoolorganised activity trips, trusted for over 65 years and working with many top schools. But it also o ers Kids’ Adventure Camps for children aged 8-16 in half-terms and holidays. During the summer break, these camps take place in 12 idyllic locations, and with a great range of activities to choose from. Children learn cool new skills and make memories, while parents get a break and the opportunity to cover o some holiday childcare. The camps are all inclusive – so that’s accommodation and food, activities (with expert

tuition) plus 24/7 care and pastoral support. There are generous discounts if you book more than one child or holiday (from 15% for two to a mighty 35% for five), which is a great incentive for families or friends to get together and multibuy – and many do.

Discover! (day to three night) camps are great for children with less time or those who want a taster of independent travel. Then there are Explore! (four to seven night) camps, with 40+ outdoor activities. Specialist Trailblaze! camps are for pursuing a passion or adding something really useful to their skillset. From baking and bushcraft to pony trekking and surfing, there are 13 amazing options to choose from, each mixed in with traditional PGL outdoor fun. You’ll

even find specialist learner driver courses for 13+ camp goers, and an ‘Adrenaline Quest’ for the 11+ cohort – the former gives a head start in a really useful life skill, while the latter combines white-knuckle rides at top theme parks with adventure at PGL sites.

PGL’s own research points to the fact that children don’t crave rest over the holidays but a change of scene and the opportunity to spread their wings. The way camps are organised by age makes it easy for children to turn up and make friends. Lots of children travel with a sibling or friend, and PGL even has bookings from cousins at di erent ends of the country who meet in the middle for an action-packed reunion. It’s popular, too, with international families. Often, the overseas cohort will combine, say a Trailblaze! specialist camp with another week of Explore! activities.

PGL started out with canoeing adventures in the 1950s, organised by one Peter Gordon Lawrence (children still love to think the acronym stands for ‘Parents Get Lost’). Often parents who book have fond memories of their own PGL trips and want their children to experience this same safe outdoor fun. It has a whole host of accreditations, including Ofsted and BAPA, and it’s also registered with ABTA. The locations are glorious – from Su olk, Dorset and Shropshire to Perthshire and rural Wales. There’s even the option of PGLescorted travel for the journey there and/or back, with convenient pick-up points. Every

“You’ll even find specialist learner driver courses for 13+ camp goers, and an ‘Adrenaline Quest’ for the 11+ cohort'”

centre is unique, and you’ll find a mix of modern and historic properties with lovely grounds. Accommodation is simple but comfortable and tailored to children and groups – the holiday luxury here is having so many activities on tap, led by expert guides.

Kids’ Adventure Camps are popular with independent-school parents, not just for the adventures but also the opportunities to mix with young people from di erent backgrounds and localities. The fact that it’s an all-inclusive set-up (all children need is a bit of pocket money) is a great leveller. Each camp has Group Leaders who manage pastoral care – helping children settle and socialise and checking in regularly. They are used to relating to young people and can work wonders with the reluctant vegetable eater or the child who is hesitant in new situations.

PGL works to be as inclusive as possible and is proud that last year 10% of children attending Adventure Camp independently had a disclosed SEND. PGL advisors work closely with families to ensure individual needs can be met. If children aren’t ready to go it alone (or alone just yet), they may recommend bringing a sibling or buddy or starting out with parents on a PGL Family Adventure.

For parents, Kids’ Adventure Camps o er the peace of mind of knowing children are busy, making friends and being active. Children, meanwhile, get a change of scene and routine. Oh, and don’t forget their bragging rights back at school. Finally, they get to answer that ‘what did you do over the holidays?’ question with their own long list of epic adventures – all of them achieved without Mum or Dad in tow.

EXPERT

Frank

on finding a niche in the property industry

Q Can you give us a bit of background to your business?

A Malcolm Associates was established in 2021. Having been a partner within a large firm of surveyors, I formed Malcolm Associates to o er a more personalised bespoke service to clients. Initially working out of Glasgow, we soon realised that the demand for HNW and UHNW services were being requested from London and swiftly moved into that geographical area, albeit we now cover the whole of the UK.

Q From day one, how did you want to be di erent?

A The drive to speed up turnaround through standardisation of reports didn’t always suit my clients and I felt that a more individual and bespoke service was welcomed by clients especially at the high end of the market.

Q Can you sum up the services you o er?

A We o er a full range of property consultancy services in both residential and commercial. Services range from Traditional Building Surveying, such as pre-acquisition

surveys, expert witness and defects analysis to Project Management and contract administration services. We have seen a huge rise in requests for Value at Risk assessments as clients try and re-assess insurance rebuild costs amidst growing costs with Brexit, Covid and increasing labour costs.

Q Can you tell us about your Project Management services?

A Malcolm Associates takes pride in its comprehensive Project Management & Cost Consultancy services, o ering a spectrum of expertise to guide clients through every phase of their projects. With a commitment to excellence, the consultancy’s services encompass both pre-contract and postcontract phases, ensuring a seamless and well-managed construction process. We have recently been working for a client on a residential refurbishment project which included full electrical rewire, underfloor heating, ornate plaster work, high end fixtures, fittings and finishes. Work included a new kitchen, games room, cinema room and swimming pool refurbishment. We also

undertook design works for garden and external landscaping, project value circa £2.5m.

Q How do you work in the commercial sector?

A We have carried out many pre-acquisitions on commercial properties, condition surveys and also worked with landlords and tenants in terms of leased properties. We can prepare schedules of conditions and schedules of dilapidations. We also have project managed fit-out works and refurbishment works for clients. Our work has covered hotels, o ces, retail and warehousing.

Q Why should our readers come to you for advice?

A We o er a personal and bespoke service to our clients and strive to provide informative reporting with our focus on the client’s requirements. We have a good client retention with repeat business and recommendations. Our existing clients vary from private individuals, large corporations, national retailers to 5-star hotels.
