5 Health Special Top tips and buys for your well-being (p59)
IABSOLUTELY’S January issue highlights 2
look back at photos of myself around 13 years and inwardly cringe. I was a fat kid, there's no escaping it, and there were no excuses – I was happy, not bullied, I just liked to eat food. And generally it was food that was not particularly healthy. I vividly remember having my school dinner, then coming home at 3pm and eating a couple of corned beef sandwiches. And I made my mum's life hell by refusing to deviate from the same food time and time again.
I am not too sure what inspired me to change. I started playing football around 15 and I guess I wanted to be the best I could be, so I started to get into fitness. I used to run up and down the living room, which looking back seems ridiculous, but within a year I was by far and away the fittest player in my team.
Now in my mid-40s, that fitness bug has remained, even if I no longer step on the football pitch. I have a big appetite, still, but balance it out with the right foods and doing plenty of exercise. In short, it shows anyone can change their ways if they put their mind to it, which is why our January health special is always a good one to get inspired by. Make it a happy 2025.

Together, these pieces form a striking narrative that challenges traditional histories and encourages reflection on identity in today’s interconnected world.
Shonibare, a Turner Prize nominee, is renowned for his multidisciplinary approach across painting, sculpture, photography and film. Born in London in 1962 and raised in Lagos, Nigeria, he now lives and works in London, where his art continues to question and redefine cultural and national identities. The Waterstones Children's Book of the Year was announced at the end of 2024and the winner has his roots in Berkshire
Voted for by Waterstones booksellers, the Book Of The Year title is a muchcoveted award, with an illustrious list of previous winners. So it was with much anticipation that Absolutely awaited the result of the 2024 vote – and were over the moon when it was revealed to be Berkshire-raised Ross Montgomery for his book, I am Rebel I am Rebel is a gorgeous, heartwarming tale about the unbreakable bond between a dog and his boy. Boasting the most charming
and tenacious canine hero, it truly has the feel of a modern classic which animal-loving children and adults alike will fall for. We decided to chat to Ross to find out more about the book and how he feels to win the award.
Q Congratulations on winning Waterstones Children's Book of the Year. How does it feel?
A I’m still in disbelief! I am Rebel is something like my 30th book – it’s amazing to see it get so much love after 11 years of doing this. The fact remains that books provide children with a form of entertainment and
escape that no other art form can match: a way of opening up the world and showing what’s there, on a deeply personal level. I believe passionately that the best way for us to bring children back to books is not to tell them that books are good for them, but to show them what they can do: to entertain them, to write the best stories possible, to take them on a journey and show them what makes the world magic along the way.
Q What can you tell us about the story?
A The story is told from the POV of Rebel – a loving, kind, but not very smart dog who lives on a farm in the middle of nowhere with his owner, 12-year-old Tom, who he adores. When Tom runs away from home to join in a rebellion, Rebel has to leave the farm for the first time in his life and travel to the other end of the kingdom to bring him home, before it’s too late.
Q When you were growing up in Berkshire, were you always writing?
A I loved writing stories, but I probably enjoyed making comics even more. Of course, all of that’s learning how to tell stories, isn’t it? You’re piecing together plots and characters and working out the rules of it, without having to write full sentences. I always tell children to make their stories into comics – it’s all writing.
Q Do you feel there is a real Ross Montgomery style now?
A Oof – I’m probably the worst person to ask this question! I love books that whip you through, where you suddenly find you’ve read half of it in one sitting by accident. I like adventure and heart and humour, and stu that’s really weird.
Q What comes next for you?
A My next children’s book is out next year –not a sequel to I am Rebel, but something in a similar vein. It’s called Small Wonder and is a fantasy adventure about a boy racing across a kingdom to escape an army and save his baby brother. Then I have my first adult book out with Viking: A Murder At World’s End, a golden-age locked-room murder mystery.

Carlos Acosta’s Nutcracker in Havana is heading to Buckinghamshire, a welcome dose of joy and dazzle to brighten up January days
By DIANE PARKES
Dance superstar Carlos Acosta’s new production Nutcracker in Havana takes the ever-popular festive ballet and moves the story to the Cuban capital. A celebration of joy, life, love and family, the show takes the Tchaikovsky classic and gives it a new spin.
Performed by more than 20 dancers from Carlos’ Havana-based company Acosta Danza, the production retains the classic story of a young girl transported to a magic world, while incorporating the culture, history and music of Carlos’ home country of Cuba.
A world-renowned dancer who has performed with companies across the globe including 17 years with The Royal Ballet, Carlos has choreographed previous productions
including Carmen and Don Quixote – and felt The Nutcracker was ideal for re-invention.
“I have performed so many versions of The Nutcracker and I think that putting it in Havana creates a production which is totally di erent from any other production out there,” Carlos says. “This is not going to be a European feel where you are in a Victorian mansion and everything is period, this is much more Cuba now.”
The Nutcracker is set amid a family party on Christmas Eve and yet as a child growing up in Havana, Carlos was unable to take part in such festivities. “I wanted to give the Cuban people the Christmas they never had,” says Carlos. “We started to celebrate Christmas from the coming to the island of Pope John Paul II in 1998 because before that Christmas was banned.”
And the production also touches on the Cuban diaspora, the thousands of people who fled the island into exile. “The magician, the Drosselmeyer character, is the uncle who left for Miami 30 years ago and has now returned to Havana with lots of presents and then he brings this kind of magic with him.”
The ballet also has new orchestration of the classic Tchaikovsky score by Cuban composer Pepe Gavilondo. “When we started to work on the show, I started to play in my mind that we could re-work the score to incorporate Cuban rhythms,” explains Carlos. “That was going to be a significant change because the audience will hear Nutcracker and Tchaikovsky in a completely di erent light with conga rhythms, guaracha, son – the music of Havana.”
The co-production is the next step in a relationship between Valid Productions
and Norwich Theatre, which saw the pair also reviving Carlos’ solo show On Before Norwich Theatre Chief Executive and Creative Director Stephen Crocker explains: “It’s been part of Norwich Theatre’s vision to establish this venue and this city as an international destination for culture, but also a place where amazing work comes from.
“Carlos is an artist I wanted to bring here because he understands our drive and the level of our ambition. I knew where he was at in terms of developing his work with Acosta Danza, a company I had always adored because of the way in which they dance and the diversity they bring not just in choreographic language, but also in
representation. We have been building that relationship and I remember him telling me he wanted to create a Nutcracker. By this point we had plans for touring so we talked about the idea and said ‘let’s do it’.”
The production brings together video and set design by Nina Dunn, whose previous work includes Bonnie and Clyde, 9 to 5 The Musical and Birmingham Royal Ballet’s Don Quixote, costumes by Angelo Alberto, lighting by Andrew Exeter and the technical skills of the team at Norwich Theatre and Acosta Danza. And the producers were keen to ensure the show has a longer life than Christmas.
“It was a conscious decision to tour from November into January,” says Stephen.
“From a venue perspective it’s about giving an alternative o er in their programme.
There are lots of people who want to find a way to do something special for Christmas and a trip to the theatre with friends and family is really important. I think Nutcracker is a really good alternative to panto – and a Nutcracker that is accessible as well.”
The producers and Carlos hope this initial
tour is only the beginning for Nutcracker in Havana. “We have conversations underway about where it’s going in 2025 and indeed in 2026, trying to look ahead,” says Stephen. “It’s the sort of show that we think can come back each year. Acosta Danza has a phenomenal international reputation and it’s a story much-loved across national boundaries, so the ambition is it might travel abroad in the future.”
For this tour the hope is that audiences find a new way of approaching a popular classic. “At its heart it is The Nutcracker story that you can expect with all of the magic and joy that goes with that,” says Stephen. “It is balletic at its core and it’s pushing the boundaries of ballet by bringing that Cuban feel into it. I’ve joked it’s the only Nutcracker I know where the corps de ballet becomes a conga line. It has a sense of fun and it’s also a spectacle – and theatre needs spectacle.
“It’s an intensely personal show to Carlos and it has been joyous to help him realise that. It’s a special moment for somebody whose career has been so ensconced in ballet and who has danced so many Nutcrackers in his life, and with him coming from Cuba there is real heart to this show.”
Nutcracker in Havana comes to Milton Keynes Theatre from 17-18 January. For more information and more tour dates see nutcrackerinhavana.com

January is a bleak month? Not here as there are plenty of places to visit for some new year rejuvenation, perfect all the family
Berkshire and Buckinghamshire are counties that come alive in the winter months with their charming villages, scenic landscapes, and historic sites. Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast, a history bu , or simply looking for cosy winter activities, they o er something for everyone.
Windsor Great Park, a sprawling 5,000acre parkland, is one of Berkshire’s most iconic outdoor destinations, and winter is an especially magical time to visit. During the colder months, the park’s serene atmosphere,
with its frost-covered trees and quiet pathways, makes for perfect winter walks.
The long, wide avenues lined with ancient oak and chestnut trees o er panoramic views of Windsor Castle, which looks stunning against the backdrop of a crisp winter sky. Winter is also a fantastic time for wildlife enthusiasts. Windsor Great Park is home to an array of wildlife, including deer, pheasants, and a variety of bird species.
The quieter, colder weather means that the animals are often easier to spot. The park also o ers designated walking routes that take you through the historic Savill Garden, where the winter gardens can be explored for their beauty. A gentle stroll through the park is ideal for those looking to enjoy a peaceful day surrounded by nature.
While you are at the Great Park… No winter visit to Berkshire would be complete without experiencing Windsor Castle, one of the oldest and most famous inhabited castles in the world. Steeped in history and grandeur, the castle is even more enchanting when draped in winter’s chill. The o cial residence
of the British royal family, Windsor Castle opens its doors to visitors throughout the winter months. During this time, the castle’s interiors – decorated with festive touches – are especially welcoming. Going into January, the State Apartments are often adorned with Christmas trees, wreaths, and other seasonal decorations, providing a warm and regal setting. A visit to
the castle during winter allows you to explore its centuries-old architecture and learn about the royal family’s rich history. The Changing of the Guard ceremony, a quintessential royal experience, is a spectacle that can still be witnessed in winter, though it takes place less frequently than in the warmer months. After touring the castle, be sure to wander through the quaint streets of Windsor town, which are often beautifully lit up for the winter season. The surrounding shops and cafes create a charming atmosphere perfect for winter shopping and dining.
Bletchley Park, famously known as the home of the codebreakers during World War II, is a fascinating and historically rich destination that is even more atmospheric during the winter months. The estate, set in 60 acres of parkland, is an exceptional place to visit year-round, but the winter months add an air of mystery and intrigue as you explore the former codebreaking hub.
In winter, the site is quieter, allowing visitors to explore the huts and buildings where the codebreakers worked, including the famous Hut 8, where Alan Turing and his team cracked the German Enigma code. The site’s exhibitions are fascinating, showcasing not only the wartime history, but also the impact of Bletchley Park’s work on modern technology and computing.
During the winter, the surrounding grounds, with their historic trees and frost-covered lawns, provide a perfect backdrop for a leisurely walk or a photography session. The on-site café o ers hot drinks and seasonal fare, ideal for warming up after exploring the estate.
For those who prefer winter hikes, the Berkshire Downs o ers a stunning, peaceful landscape for walking and exploring. The Downs are a series of rolling hills that stretch across the southern part of the county, o ering panoramic views over the surrounding countryside. While the summer months see many walkers and cyclists on the trails, the winter brings an element of tranquility and solitude to this beautiful region.
A hike on the Berkshire Downs in winter o ers spectacular views of frost-kissed fields
BERKSHIRE DOWNS
and distant, misty hills. Popular walking routes include the Ridgeway, an ancient path that has been used for thousands of years, and the South Berkshire Loop. These trails take you through charming villages, ancient woodlands, and open farmland. In winter, the terrain can be quite muddy and slippery, so it’s important to dress warmly and wear appropriate footwear, but the peaceful landscape and the chance to spot wildlife like winter birds and deer make it well worth the e ort.
For those looking to take their winter exploration to the next level, the Berkshire Downs are also home to several cosy pubs where you can unwind after a long walk. These rural inns often feature roaring fires and hearty, comforting meals – perfect for warming up on a cold winter’s day.
Waddesdon Manor, a stunning French-style château set within a 6,000-acre estate, is a must-visit in Buckinghamshire during the winter season. The manor is not only an architectural marvel, but also home to beautiful gardens that transform during the colder months. Waddesdon’s Winter Light Festival is a particularly popular event, where the mansion and its surrounding gardens are illuminated with thousands of twinkling lights, creating a magical, festive atmosphere. The rich history of the Rothschild family, who once owned the estate, is evident throughout the house, and there are fascinating exhibits and art collections to explore. The winter months are also an excellent time to visit the house’s renowned wine cellars, where you can take part in seasonal tastings of local wines and spirits.
The Chiltern Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is one of Buckinghamshire’s most scenic locations. This rolling, tree-lined landscape is perfect for winter hiking, o ering miles of trails and stunning panoramic views of the surrounding countryside – and the crisp winter air makes walking even more refreshing. One popular walk in the Chiltern Hills includes the Ivinghoe Beacon, which o ers spectacular views over the Vale of Aylesbury. The region also boasts charming villages like Turville and Hambleden, where you can enjoy peaceful strolls through cobbled streets, lined with traditional English cottages and cozy country pubs.
This winter, escape to E.J. Churchill's world-class shooting ground (visit ejchurchill.com), just 40 minutes from London. Renowned for hosting prestigious events, including world championships and collaborations with brands like Red Bull, the shooting ground o ers the perfect opportunity to get outdoors and experience the thrill of clay shooting. From complete novices looking to try something new to seasoned shots aiming to sharpen their skills, their expert instructors provide a relaxed, friendly introduction. Set in the stunning Buckinghamshire countryside, it’s the ideal place to make this winter unforgettable with an outdoor adventure like no other.
Wendover Woods sits at the highest point in the stunning Chiltern Hills, and is home to three exciting high ropes experiences for adventurers of all ages. Treetop Challenge is for adults and secondary aged children, featuring crossings through the canopy that climb higher and higher above the forest floor before zipping back to the ground. Youngsters under six years or looking to build their confidence will love Treetop Adventure, and explorers over six years and 1.2m can test their skills on Treetop Adventure Plus, a recent new addition.
Art collector and design concierge founder,
Hannah Tsurkan, reveals the artists and sculptors set to be big in 2025
Hannah Tsurkan is founder of Agora Project Management, an endto-end luxury construction and development company that doesn’t just build beautiful, mindful properties from the ground up across the UK – it also sources rare works of art, vintage furniture, and exquisite sculptures for its clients as part of its premium interior design concierge.
Alongside its design partners, Agora Project Management has sourced a wide array of works, from Francis Bacon and Jackson Pollock to Fernando Botero and Rothko, as well as rare works by the Albers (from both Anni and Josef.) The company also regularly sources mid-century pieces for the home and decorative final touches –even some very rare handbags for clients.
Having come from an artistic background herself, both in jewellery design and fine art, Hannah has a keen and trained eye for even the smallest of details, and she’s never far away from an auction house, gallery, or art exhibition. She is also a collector herself.
Hannah says: “Art isn’t just a finishing touch, it’s the core of a room; a focal point that makes you feel something every time you look at it, as well as in most occasions centre of your whole design.
“Investing in art is about more than just immediate aesthetic appeal,” she continues, “it’s about finding something timeless that will inspire and enrich your life for years to come, while also increasing in financial value.”
Here, Hannah writes about some of the artists and sculptors that UHNW
clients are investing in right now – and may be worth your consideration too.
Tunji’s work is an explosion of colour, with vibrant, elongated figures dancing across the canvas, creating a semblance of rhythm and energy that’s contagious. His paintings are truly alive, and there’s a vibrancy that you can’t look away from.
Tunji is fast becoming a favourite with collectors who value bright colours and cultural influences. His work is deeply inspired by his West African heritage.
I discovered Chung fairly recently, and it’s a bit of a di erent one for me, as I myself have written articles about not relying too
heavily on technology or going too far down the AI rabbit hole. However, you can’t deny that Chung’s work is striking, and I’ve found there’s a growing wave of collectors who are looking for the next best thing; something exciting and innovative, not just oil on canvas.
Sougwen merges human creativity with machine learning, using robotic systems to produce intricate, ethereal drawings that explore the evolving relationship between humans and machines. While this may feel rather dystopian to some, I think there is some beauty in this – plus, her shows remind me of the 1999 Alexander McQueen show.
While Mark Dargas is not a brand-new artist, his work is absolutely extraordinary – he’s single handedly redefining portraiture with paintings that almost seem to breathe, they’re so realistic. Mark’s attention to detail means he’s able to capture the subtle emotions and nuances of his subjects in a way that feels deeply personal; it almost feels as though you’re looking at a photograph. His honey series has been my absolute favourite.
Vladimir Slavov’s atelier is a sanctuary for artistic exploration, I always get lost in there for hours. In his work he explores the complex relationship between light, shapes and their reflections, and the impact these things have on their environment.
Slavov mainly creates beautiful lighting pieces, but they truly are works of art – and they’ve found many a home in our interior designers’ creations.
George Rouy creates surreal, distorted figures that challenge traditional representations of the human body. For his latest series, BODYSUIT, he actually worked with a choreographer to ensure he got the movement right – I find you can stare at his works for hours.
George really pushes the boundaries of figurative painting, and his bold, provocative style has started to attract a following of collectors who love to be questioned by what’s in front of them. I adore his work.
CAMILLE HANNAH
Camille has become really popular with collectors over the last five years or so. She uses oil on convex aluminium surfaces, creating 3D works that are as much about texture, as they are about visual form – they’re almost liquid-like.
Camille’s works are great for modern, minimalist or industrial spaces as they almost jump out at you from a pale wall. You can find her in both the Saatchi and HOFA Galleries in London.
I came to know of Pauline Roy when visiting the 2024 Collectible Fair in Brussels, her pieces have been very popular because of the sheer level of detail. To me, her work speaks for itself – she creates great modern-day pieces that will e ortlessly enhance any interior, whether it’s a private home or a commercial space. They’re very versatile pieces – they literally fit anywhere, and they will last a lifetime. There’s a delicate balance between texture and transparency in her work, and her mastery of sandblasting brings out the unique character of glass. She’s deeply inspired by nature, and the beauty, strength and fragility that comes with that.

ROLE : Property Disputes Team Leader, B P Collins WEBSITE : bpcollins.co.uk
Q Before working at B P Collins, what was your background in law?
A I’ve been at B P Collins for 10 years, having started with work experience and working my way up to the head of the property disputes team this year. I did a three-month stint as an in-house paralegal for Nestlé prior to joining B P Collins – the free chocolate and co ee was a great perk!
Q What inspired you to work at B P Collins?
A The mentorship from other lawyers and the management style of our dispute resolution team, led by Matthew Brandis, are key to our success. Matthew
trusts the team to take ownership of its work, fostering a collaborative environment where no one person is more important than the whole. This shared passion for delivering exceptional client care has enabled the firm to win multiple awards for its service.
Q What area do you specialise in?
A Residential and commercial property disputes such as boundary disputes, rights of way and other easement disputes, claims for adverse possession (acting for applicants and respondents), disputes over ownership, possession proceedings, forfeiture and debt
“MENTORSHIP IS KEY TO OUR SUCCESS”
recovery. I am regularly instructed in high-value and complex property disputes for multinational and UK companies, commercial landlords, portfolio residential landlords, management companies and high net worth individuals. I also work with individuals who are facing litigation for the first time, so I always do my best to alleviate their stress wherever possible.
Q What have been your working highlights in 2024?
A I became the youngest head of a property disputes team amongst the top 200 law firms in England and Wales this year. I was also really pleased to win ‘Young Property Professional of the Year’ at the Thames Valley Property Awards too. Overall, 2024 has been incredible, not least because of my brilliant team who inspire me every day.
Q What's to come in 2025?
A I am excited to grow and build the team, investing in the next generation of solicitors, just like the firm invested in me.
ROLE : Private Client Partner,
B P Collins
WEBSITE : bpcollins.co.uk
Q What inspired you to work at B P Collins?
A It is a very well-regarded firm. Its private client team has always had a fantastic reputation and is ranked number 1 in the Legal 500 – a leading independent legal directory. I live in Beaconsfield, where the firm has many clients, and I feel very much part of the community here.
Q What area do you specialise in?
A Private client, which includes advising people on their estate planning matters such as wills, lasting powers of attorney and tax planning, with a particular emphasis on the use of trusts, as well as probate matters often with a cross-border element. I also advise both UK and international clients.
Q What have been your working highlights in 2024?
A I found great job satisfaction in assisting several clients with their estate planning ahead of the recent Budget and helping to ease their concerns. I also thoroughly enjoyed advising clients with businesses on their succession planning, particularly those with family-run businesses. Helping them ensure their key assets are managed in the most e ective way upon their death was incredibly rewarding. It’s fulfilling to know that my advice plays a crucial role in securing their and their family’s futures.
Q What's to come in 2025?
A A lot of changes have been brought in by the Budget and I am already enjoying conversations with clients, financial advisers and accountants, regarding how the Budget might a ect them and how we might be able to assist.

Our team handles a range of matters including cases on age discrimination and whistleblowing, that have set legal precedents. ROLE : Family Partner and Practice Group Leader, B P Collins
WEBSITE : bpcollins.co.uk
Q Before working at B P Collins, what was your background in law?
A I started my career at a music and entertainment law practice in London with plans to be a media law litigator. However, when I was exposed to family law, I realised that it was a calling for me. Because my parents divorced when I was a child, and my mother went through a second divorce under extremely di cult circumstances, it means a great deal to me to help others navigate divorce and conflict, particularly when children are involved. I strive to support people in ways that reduces their stress and anxiety, while helping to prevent longterm damage to their relationships.
Q What inspired you to work at B P Collins?
A I chose B P Collins because it o ers a supportive environment where the team truly cares about making a positive di erence for clients. The firm’s commitment to work-life balance is important to me, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to work on meaningful, complex legal matters.
Q What area do you specialise in?
A As a family lawyer, I specialise in resolving disputes that arise from marital and relationship breakdowns. This includes issues such as asset division, child arrangements, prenuptial and postnuptial agreements, and more recently, family creation matters like surrogacy.
Q What have been your working highlights in 2024?
A I took on the role of managing the family team, and it has been an incredibly rewarding experience. Together we’ve achieved a lot, including our expansion and receiving glowing feedback from our clients. I’m proud of the positive impact we’ve made.
Q What are you looking forward to in 2025?
A As a modern families practice, we are looking forward to advising on more matters relating to surrogacy and agreements relating to sperm and egg donation. At the other end of the spectrum, we aim to use our existing expertise as trauma informed practitioners to help support people going through high conflict divorces – particularly where coercive control and narcissism are an issue.
ROLE : Residential Property Partner, B P Collins
WEBSITE : bpcollins.co.uk
Q What is your background in law?
A I worked at a London firm where I led a team on development sales for some of the UK’s biggest house builders. I then moved to a City practice, where I dealt with all matters of residential property, with a focus on development work and acted as trusted adviser to one of the largest property investors and landlords in London and the South.
Q What inspired you to work at B P Collins?
A I have been aware since the start of my career of B P Collins’ reputation as an excellent regional firm which o ers a citylevel of expertise and punches well above its weight. I have often come across the firm on the other side of transactions. The opportunity to join such a well-respected firm and to help grow its presence in the Thame and Oxfordshire area, where I live, was one I was keen to grasp.
“I AM HOPEFUL WE WILL SEE FURTHER OPPORTUNITIES FOR GROWTH”
Q What area do you specialise in?
A All aspects of residential property, with a particular background in development work, high value transactions, landlord and tenant work and auction sales.
Q What have been your working highlights in 2024?
A I was involved in the sale of a golf club with complex legal issues to resolve, as well as managing several refinance transactions. Additionally, I have handled a number of high-value deals, consistently achieving successful outcomes for our clients, which, I’m delighted to say, has led to further instructions. I’ve also enjoyed strong working relationships with clients and referrers.
Q What's to come in 2025?
A I’m looking forward to continuing the progress we’ve made, with a particular focus on growing the business in Thame along with our other o ces in Gerrards Cross, Ickenham and the City. I’m hopeful that with the uncertainty of the election and Budget behind us, we’ll see further opportunities for growth.
ROLE : Criminal Senior Associate, B P Collins
WEBSITE : bpcollins.co.uk
Q Before working at B P Collins, what was your background in law?
A I was a Director at a law firm for several years, which meant my role was more focused on management rather than client-facing work, something I really missed. In my last practice in Farringdon, I transitioned back to criminal law, where I reconnected with my passion for direct client work. In 2024, I joined B P Collins, excited to return to a more client-centred role within a dynamic and supportive team.
Q What inspired you to work at B P Collins?
A It may sound clichéd, but meeting the people at the firm before I joined truly convinced me it was the right fit. Although I’ve only been here a short time, the open and supportive culture created by the partners permeates throughout the entire team, making it a positive environment to work in.
Q What area do you specialise in?
A I’m a criminal lawyer within B P Collins’ dispute resolution
practice, which addresses a range of issues. This includes helping clients with environmental noise disputes, advocating for victims' rights, and supporting those facing challenges in higher education, amongst other areas.
Q What have been your working highlights in 2024?
A I successfully settled a case with the Metropolitan Police, who had spent nearly 7½ years investigating my clients without making any significant progress. After challenging the investigation and engaging in negotiations, we reached a settlement. I also assisted a vulnerable individual who had experienced a traumatic mental health episode while in a hospital. Following extensive representations to the Crown Prosecution Service, supported by psychiatric evidence, the prosecution decided to discontinue the case.
Q What's to come in 2025?
A On a personal level, I’d like to make more progress with my piano practice, and, hopefully, my family will enjoy hearing it too. Professionally, I aim to keep challenging injustice, protecting my clients' interests, and ensuring they receive the support they need at every stage of their journey.
ROLE : Solicitor - Dispute Resolution and Commercial Property, Lightfoots Solicitors
WEBSITE : lightfoots.co.uk
Q What is your background in law pre-Lightfoots?
A I joined Lightfoots earlier this year, prior to that I had spent my whole legal career to date (including work experience at age 15!) at a firm in Maidenhead, where I started as a Legal Secretary/Paralegal, then a Trainee Solicitor and ultimately became a Partner. It was a great experience, but as with all good things, it was time for it to come to an end.
Q What inspired you to work at Lightfoots Solicitors?
A I knew Lightfoots was held in high regard and had a good reputation. When I started to think about moving on, I wasn’t going to leave my old firm after 18 years to go just anywhere, but Lightfoots seemed like it would be a good fit from what I knew of the business. Fortunately for me, Joe and the other Partners were persuaded to give me the opportunity to join the team.
Q What area do you specialise in?
A Since qualifying I have specialised in general civil litigation with a side helping of commercial property and, as a natural consequence of this crossover,
I particularly enjoy property litigation work, which covers both residential and commercial property, boundary disputes and issues around enforcing covenants in leases, to name but a few.
Q What have been your working highlights in 2024?
A First and foremost, joining the Lightfoots team of course! A close second and third, in no particular order, however, would be concluding a case regarding enforcement of a personal guarantee given in connection with a lease of commercial property on very good terms for my client and successfully applying for summary judgment in a statutory lease renewal claim, which is highly unusual and might never have been done before – it was certainly a first for both me and the barrister I instructed, but we were confident that, in the circumstances we could win, and we did!
Q What are you looking forward to in 2025?
A We have got great foundations with the litigation team and the calibre of work that we have at present, but the firm has a really strong reputation in other practice areas and I am looking to ensure that the litigation team becomes equally as well regarded. The opening of a new Marlow o ce in July means that we are o to a great start.
ROLE : Solicitor - Commercial Property, Lightfoots Solicitors
WEBSITE : lightfoots.co.uk
Q Before working at Lightfoots Solicitors, what was your background in law?
A Having been interested in law for as long as I can remember, I studied law at university during which I spent my summer holidays on work experience before starting my first legal job as an Accounts Assistant and worked my way up from there. Although my younger self would be very surprised to see that I work in an area I enjoyed the least whilst studying!
Q What inspired you to work at Lightfoots Solicitors?
A Having initially worked in a West London based practice, I was looking for a more regional based firm in the aim of a closer working relationship with my colleagues to further develop my knowledge and obtain a training contract to qualify as a solicitor. I immediately felt at home when coming to Lightfoots for interview and felt the firm’s core values were very much aligned with my own.
We have a fantastic team culture here and it is definitely something that clients feel the benefit of.
Q What area do you specialise in?
A My main focus is commercial property dealing with all aspects of Landlord and Tenant matters, acting for investor clients in portfolio finance transactions, and assisting developers with option agreements to initial site acquisition and subsequent sales.
Q What have been your working highlights in 2024?
A The diversity at Lightfoots both in terms of our multiple o ce locations and people means we come across wide-ranging transactions, and the last year in particular has seen an increase in assisting with NHS Lease instructions. In addition, developing new and existing relationships through the launch of our quarterly networking event, the Lightfoots Business Club, in which we get together and collaborate with a variety of local businesses in Thame.
Q What are you looking forward to in 2025?
A The continued growth of our Commercial Property Team and, in particular, our new Marlow o ce and developing relationships in that area.
“OUR NEWEST OFFICE IN MARLOW ALREADY BOASTS A HARDWORKING TEAM”
ROLE : Managing Partner, Lightfoots Solicitors
WEBSITE : lightfoots.co.uk
Q What is your background in law?
A In contrast to most already working, or coming into the industry, my early experience was practically zero! It consisted of a fortnight at the age of 15 at a Barrister Chambers in Temple Bar where my primary role was to pick up on the way in each morning the bacon and egg rolls for the Chamber’s Clerks’ breakfast! Beyond that, my next visit to a legal o ce was day one at Lightfoots in September 1999.
Q What inspired you to work at Lightfoots Solicitors?
I had left it very late to apply for a training contract; they had left it very late to advertise for a trainee. My then partners tell me they had over 500 applicants although I think that number grows each time the tale is told and it’s now becoming embellished folklore where the truth is diluted by a good backstory. Either way, we clearly had something to o er the other and the rest is history. I joined as a trainee and never left. The extent of my movement since has been a few di erent o ces, corridors and occasionally buildings!
Q What area do you specialise in?
Q What have been your working highlights in 2024?
A Working alongside a great team within the firm which ranges from exciting young lawyers with a huge appetite to learn, to my non fee earning colleagues in finance, marketing, IT, compliance and HR, all of whom have given us the platform to grow steadily whilst maintaining control and composure. Behind every group of great lawyers is a team of non-lawyers making sure we stay in our lane.
Q What's to come in 2025?
A I don’t think it’s a case of me being inspired and more so the firm and I being forced together through circumstances.
A I say commercial property when asked, but I think the work I do covers a far greater spectrum than that. I frequently act on high value residential, commercial property sale and purchases, Landlord & Tenant leases, development and other land associated deals, and a variety of property finance transactions.
A The growth of a few areas within the firm that I think are sleeping giants. Commercial property, private client and employment to name a few, but more generally the continued expansion of our newest o ce in Marlow, which already boasts a hard-working team ready to deliver to the town.
ROLE : Partner/Head of Residential Conveyancing, Lightfoots Solicitors
WEBSITE : lightfoots.co.uk
Q What is your background in law pre-Lightfoots?
A I started working in residential conveyancing in 2001 whilst studying to become a Licensed Conveyancer. Working in local firms, I enjoyed making connections with local agents and clients and building up a team around me to create a successful conveyancing department within that law firm.
Q What inspired you to work at Lightfoots Solicitors?
A I had wanted to work for Lightfoots for a number of years before I actually started working here. I had dealt with them on the other side of transactions and had always found them to be professional and friendly. Furthermore, I knew a few members of their sta who had made the decision to join Lightfoots and were incredibly happy there. I wanted to wait for my children to be old enough, so that I could commit to the role full time, so when the time was right, I contacted the Senior Partner, Joe Middleton, and haven’t looked back since!
Q What area do you specialise in?
A I am a Partner and Head of Residential Conveyancing, so I deal with property sales, purchases, transfers of equity, remortgages and lease extensions, along with most other property matters. I also manage my team.
Q What have been your working highlights in 2024?
A I have had quite a few highlights in 2024! My number one highlight has to be becoming a Partner of the firm. It was a fantastic feeling to know all my hard work had been acknowledged and appreciated. Another highlight was the opening of our new branch in Marlow. Seeing how successful it has already become has been amazing. I used to work in Marlow, so still had a lot of contacts and clients there. It is therefore great to be able to work from there again and get involved with the local community.
Q What's to come in 2025?
A I am looking forward to watching my team learn and grow as we continue to expand and provide high levels of service to all our clients. I am also looking forward to continuing to build up new relationships with local companies and residents in Marlow and supporting them in any way we can.
ROLE : Director, LGFL Ltd
WEBSITE : lgfamilylawyers.co.uk
Q When did you first develop an interest in law?
A I developed an interest in law as a teenager. I knew then I wanted to be a lawyer from when I was around 14 years of age.
Q Did you know early on what type of law you wanted to specialise in?
A No. I decided to specialise in Family Law during my articles (now Training Contract) at Paris Smith and Randall. I enjoyed my 6 months spent there and then was given the opportunity to run a family desk and case load due to maternity leave.
Q Tell us about the practice you run today?
A LGFL is a brilliant specialist niche family high end law practice. It delivers Director led, high level service to clients on complex cases.
Q Tell us about a particularly important case for you recently…
A I recently acted in an Intervenor case. It was incredibly important as it was a huge impact case for elderly parents who needed to recover their money for care costs. They had lent these funds to the married couple, their daughter and her husband. The husband claimed it was a gift and did not have to be repaid. The matter went to full trial and we won the case on behalf of the parents.
Q What do you love best about your job?
A I love the court work and also helping people to move forward to the next stage of their lives after the breakdown of their relationship.
Q Where are you based?
A Swallowfield in Berkshire – beautiful grounds to enjoy all year round.

Dr Nyla Raja looks into the aesthetics trends we can expect to see in 2025
Ahighly respected and much sought after skin specialist and cosmetic dermatology GP, Dr Nyla Raja has practiced medicine for over 20 years and has personally delivered over 200,000 treatments with exceptional results. Trusted by television personalities, well-known celebrity figures and some of the UK’s most familiar faces, she is considered to be one of the top cosmetic doctors in the country. Here she gives her insight into the top skincare and aesthetics trends to watch in 2025.
Dr Nyla says: “As we move into 2025, the world of aesthetics and skincare will continue to evolve. It’s not just about the aesthetic outcome anymore, but a holistic approach to maintaining skin health and longevity. Patients are looking for advanced, non-invasive treatments that enhance natural beauty and focus on long-term skin wellness. Below are some of the biggest trends in 2025.”
2025 will be all about 'undetectable beauty', where aesthetic treatments enhance your natural features without being visibly noticeable. The desire for subtle, natural-looking enhancements is at an all-time high. Patients are increasingly leaning towards procedures that deliver natural, 'undetectable' results. They want to look refreshed, not altered.Microlifting, skin tightening treatments, and injectables will focus on enhancing natural contours and improving skin tone.
Younger generations are increasingly focused on 'prejuvenation' – preventing the signs of ageing before they occur. The experts at Natures Corner, Newbury, take us on the journey of the common cold
“Support your immune system with something like Echinacea”
Here’s a cheery thought: did you know that the germs from one sneeze can travel up to nine metres? And when travelling as fast as 100 mph, that doesn’t give you much time to dive for cover. Plus, by the time you feel unwell with a cold, you’ve probably been exposed to the cold virus for between one and three days – a cold is sneaky like that. So what are the di erent stages of the common cold?
1 AND 2:
What you can expect
Cold symptoms vary from person to person, but the most common first symptoms are congestion, runny nose, and a scratchy sore throat – each is a clear indication that the cold virus is a ecting your respiratory system. What you can do Support your immune system with Echinacea.
Echinacea Hot Drink can be a soothing way to ensure you replace lost fluids – a ‘must’ when a cold raises your temperature. A dollop of Manuka honey adds another element of ‘delicious’. Echinacea Sore Throat Spray and hot ginger tea are perfect for countering the soreness in your throat, by which time you know that bug has you in its grasp.
What you can expect Nasal symptoms continue to develop during days three and four, peaking around day four. The colour of your mucus may change too, taking on a yellow or green tinge, depending on how your immune system is responding to the virus.
Clear mucus? You’re in the clear. White mucus with congestion often indicates the early stages of a cold. Greenish or yellowishcoloured mucus signifies the presence of enzymes from white blood cells, meaning your immune system is trying to battle infection. What you can do
If your mucus is darker in colour, make sure you stay hydrated and get enough rest to allow your body to recover. If your nose is blocked and you’re having di culty breathing, a Eucalyptus Oil steam bath can really help. Dilute a drop in a bowl of hot water, hold a towel over your head, and inhale deeply.
What you can expect
As you get better over the next few days, nasal congestion tends to clear up, but it’s not uncommon to then develop a cough, often in response to postnasal drip. This is when excess mucus runs down the back of your nose into your throat causing a cough, hoarseness and a sore throat. What you can do
If your cough is productive, you will need an expectorant to help bring up the excess mucus in your airways. Expectorants thin and loosen mucus from the respiratory tract, encouraging its expulsion. Try A.Vogel’s Bronchoforce Chesty Cough with Ivy, Thyme and Liquorice to help relieve
chesty coughs resulting from excess mucus or catarrh in the respiratory tract.
The average duration of a cold is seven to ten days, and by day ten you should start to feel a lot better, although cold symptoms may last longer or become more severe in people with immune problems or other underlying health issues. If symptoms persist or you have a medical condition that puts you at increased risk for complications, reach out to your healthcare provider.
Keeping your cold to yourself
Remember, a cold can creep up on you and others. You can be contagious quite without realising for one or two days before cold symptoms kick in, and then for as long as your symptoms are present. Good hygiene is paramount. Prevent the spread of infection by washing your hands frequently, fully covering your mouth and nose with your elbow or a tissue when coughing or sneezing, and not touching others if at all possible.

A good night’s sleep really can do you the world of good, writes one local expert
By JOANNA HILL
When it comes to staying well during the sni y season, we all know how important it is to top up on vitamin C, eat healthily and wash our hands to help prevent the spread of infection. But how do our sleeping habits a ect our immune health?
Scientists are still trying to figure out the exact relationship between sleep and the immune system, but many agree that a lack of sleep can severely impair immunity and make you more vulnerable to infections like colds and flu. If you need a hand nodding o try these five tips for getting a better night’s sleep…
Going to bed and waking up at the same time every day will make the hours that you sleep more productive and will help you establish a sleep routine.
Avoid using tablets or phones in bed, as the blue light will stimulate the brain and keep you awake for longer. If you’re having trouble getting to sleep earlier, try slowly dimming the lights an hour before bedtime to simulate the setting sun. This will trigger the release of melatonin, the hormone associated with promoting sleep.
Broken sleep is poor quality sleep and will not help the immune system. If you wake up during the night, make a note of the time. Waking up at 3am is actually very common and could be a sign your liver, which carries out many of its functions in the early hours of the morning, may be working too hard to process fatty foods and refined sugars, alcohol or stimulants.
A natural sleep remedy can also help. A.Vogel’s Dormeasan® Sleep with extracts of fresh Valerian and Hops is registered for sleep disturbances. It’s not known to be addictive, and is not associated with groggy feelings when you wake in the morning, or with side e ects when you come o it. Still need help nodding o ? Try A.Vogel’s Sleep Well Dissolvable Granules with extracts of Lettuce, Lemon Balm, Magnesium and L-Tryptophan. These plant-based ingredients work to promote a calm, restful sleep.
If a blocked nose is keeping you awake, try to prop your head a little higher on your pillow, and use a nasal spray to loosen congestion. If you do fall ill with a cold or flu, the herb Echinacea can help to ease symptoms.

JWhy Merry People wellington boots are just what you need to kick-start 2025
anuary seems to be the time when we realise there is nothing better for the soul than venturing out into the countryside, breathing in the fresh air, walking o that festive excess. But one thing you can count on is terrible British winter weather, so your planning needs to start from the bottom up – and inspiration comes from the other side of the world in Australia.
Launched in 2014, Merry People is now Australia’s highest rated wellington boots. They are 100% waterproof, keeping your feet dry whatever the weather (particularly handy at this time of the year), and a warm neoprene lining (3mm thick) has been tested for subzero weather conditions. They also have added arch-support, making them comfortable for long walks.
“Merry People started as an idea, born out of a practical frustration,” says founder Danielle Pearce. “Growing up on a farm in South Gippsland, Victoria, I was familiar with just how useful gumboots can be, but couldn’t find a pair that bridged the gap between city and country life. I took a pretty crazy leap of faith and set out to create my own boots.”
Merry People has come far in a decade. They look absolutely fantastic, coming in a wide range of colours – from neutrals and pastels to bright bolds – and there’s something for all the family, with a unisex design in a host of sizes and special children’s boots too.
They look absolutely fantastic, coming in a wide range of colours – from neutrals start 2025 o on the right healthy foot, Merry People should be your starting uk.merrypeople.com
So, with that desire to start 2025 o on the right healthy foot, Merry People should be your starting point. As Danielle wonderfully sums up: “Like my journey, Merry People represents finding what makes you feel happy and alive.”

Absolutely visits The Thames Valley Scar Clinic, which o ers the latest in treatments for skincare
We are delighted to introduce The Thames Valley Scar Clinic and its directors Consultant Plastic Surgeons, Alexandra and Sara Atkins-Murray. The clinic opened last summer and is already attracting patients from all over Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Berkshire.
The clinic specialises in treating people with scars, skin conditions that cause visible di erence and age-related skin change. Alexandra, who leads the regional NHS Burns and Scar service, told us she was inspired to bring the multi-faceted assessment she uses for her burn patients to the private sector. “When somebody comes to see me, I assess all aspects of their concerns, whatever the aetiology,” she explains. “It’s the way the skin feels, looks and of course how it a ects their well-being. To be able to o er bespoke, high quality care is very satisfying.”
Originally trained in Yorkshire, she then spent two years at the internationally renowned Western Australian burns service, bringing back expertise in RECELL ‘spray on skin’ and the use of Laser for scarring. Alexandra explains: “It was inspirational. I was able to come here and develop the regional Scar MDT and Laser service, one of the first in the UK. Laser has revolutionised scar management, it is just so e ective.” We also were intrigued by the “Spray on skin”, a novel device where skin cells collected from the patient are prepared in a special machine and then sprayed back on to a raw area of skin. Alexandra explains although initially developed for acute burns treatment, it can also benefit other patients. “I’ve used it on hundreds of burns patients for quicker healing, but it is also the only e ective treatment for patches of hypopigmentation such as with scarring or stable vitiligo.”
It’s not just surgical expertise that’s a highlight, but also state of the art equipment. They have Lumenis’s newly released
Ultrapulse Alpha laser. This is used for scars, and smoothing over skin lines and wrinkles in skin rejuvenation. “It’s the most powerful carbon dioxide laser on the market,” Sara tells us. “We use it to ‘resurface’ the skin, producing a long lasting and significant rejuvenation.” They also use the versatile Lumenis M22, to treat vascularity and hyperpigmentation. Sara explains: “Targeting areas of redness or excess pigment is useful for a wide range of problems from skin conditions such as rosacea to general age related skin change and sun damage, which of course is very rejuvenating.” Surgery and more simple non-operative treatments are also on o er. The clinic itself has a beautiful, Scandinavian feeling designed to help you relax. Nestled discreetly on a rural estate in Wheatley near the M40 and A40 it’s ideally located. If you are somebody that wants to feel more comfortable in your own skin, looked after by expert Consultant Plastic Surgeons, then look no further.

Our annual sale is now on
Sofology Reading have unveiled their cosy trends for the start of 2025, including this look, dubbed 'sculptural style'. Soft furnishings feature embracing, rounded shapes, complemented by graphic outlines in the form of pattern or the bold detailing of a sculptural stool. Perfect, we say, to sink into this January.
Simon Gri ths, Associate Director of Architecture at HollandGreen, on why this project in Buckinghamshire was such a huge undertaking
Q When you began the project, how would you describe the condition of the barn?
A The U-shaped arrangement of three stone barns, now forming the house, enclosed a large courtyard space that previously housed a metal shed for cattle. When we first visited, the barns were derelict and in extremely poor condition. There were numerous leaking roofs and significant damage to the stonework and structural timbers at roof level. Most of the windows and doors were either missing or severely damaged. Overall, the structures were in a very poor state.
Q Would you say that dealing with the building’s listed status was your biggest challenge?
A Often obtaining listed building status from the local planning team is the biggest challenge, but because we wanted to retain the existing fabric and character of the building, the design received planning permission and listed building consent without any challenges. Many of the rooms were large, open spaces, some of which were exposed to the elements. Our solution was to enclose these exposed areas behind glazed screens and fenestration, preserving the visual connection between the interior and exterior while maintaining
the integrity of the original structure. Consequently, the listed building consent process went smoothly.
Q What, then, was the biggest challenge?
A The biggest challenge was probably the size of the building, which is about 1,000 square metres, combined with the client’s budget. A 1,000 square metre space is very large for a single dwelling, and naturally, this meant extensive consideration, planning and technical plans. We prepared the initial set of drawings for the client, and once the project was underway on-site, they chose to project manage the build themselves, coordinating with trades people, sourcing materials, and shopping around for the best value on furniture, fittings, flooring, and bathrooms to maximise the budget.
Q What was your starting point as architects?
A We created the new design, and when it received planning approval, we began with what we call “building regulations work”. This involved producing the technical drawings. We collaborated closely with the client and their builder to identify their exact requirements, then created a set of drawings that would enable the build to proceed. This streamlined approach allowed construction to start while keeping costs manageable and ensuring that all necessary details were covered.
Q What materials were key to the project?
A The buildings are constructed primarily from local rubble stone. The previous plans were for the zinc cladding in a dark, anthracite grey, and the clients were happy to continue with this choice, using it for both the walls and the roof, creating a modern, contemporary contrast with the traditional barn. The glazing frames were also dark grey to complement the zinc and harmonise with the infill extension.
“WE WERE ABLE TO TRANSFORM THE BARN INTO A LIGHT-FILLED INVITING HOME”
The most significant material change was the roof. Initially, the original roof coverings were either corrugated metal, common on farm buildings, or old concrete tiles. The client wanted to replace these with slate and ultimately opted for Spanish slate. To give you some context, the total amount of roof battens and slate needed for the buildings amounted to around 11 kilometres. This statistic stands out as a testament to the scale of the project – 11 kilometres of roofing materials is a huge amount!
Q You mentioned the wall of glass and plenty of glazing. Is that how you ensured the barn was exposed to plenty of natural light?
A Yes, exactly. Where there were previously open spaces exposed to the elements, we aimed to maintain that sense of openness while increasing natural light. We achieved this by installing full-height glazed walls, which allowed the entire ground floor to be flooded with natural light. This approach not only preserved the barn’s original character, but also enhanced the living spaces with a bright, airy atmosphere. Additionally, for the doors leading from either side of the building into the courtyard, we replaced solid doors with glazed ones. The original sliding screens remain. This change ensured that light could flow through the entire space, creating a seamless connection between the interior and exterior. By incorporating these extensive glazing elements, we were able to transform the barn into a lightfilled, inviting home while respecting its historical roots.
Q The living room area really stands out for us. What was the thought process behind it?
A Originally, the client had envisioned adding a mezzanine above the kitchen to create a dramatic library. However, they then decided to keep the roof space open, showcasing the beautiful trusses. One section of the trusses showed signs of fire damage from many years ago, with noticeable black staining, which the client was keen to preserve as part of the building’s character. Keeping the roof space open creates a vast sense of volume and light within the room. The open ceiling allows you to fully appreciate the scale of the space and the intricate details of the roof structure. In terms of layout, the living area is divided more by furniture arrangements than by physical partitions. The client used the furniture to subtly define di erent zones: the kitchen is at one end, the dining area occupies the middle, and the seating area is at the far end. This approach maintains a sense of openness and flexibility, allowing the space to flow naturally without the need for formal partitions. The result is a cohesive, multifunctional living area that feels both spacious and intimate.
Q What would you say your favourite part of the finished project is?
A I’d say the central living space is my favourite. It truly has the wow factor. The way everything flows together, with the open ceilings and the large, openplan design, creates a remarkable sense of space and light. It’s definitely the heart of the home! hollandgreen.co.uk

The director of Lemon and Lime Interiors, the national home staging company, on her top five home trends for 2025
By ELAINE PENHAUL
Interior design is a fashion-led industry and as we enter 2025, we can expect to see homeowners embracing a bold and thoughtful blend of styles that prioritise individuality, sustainable luxury, and intelligent, multifunctional spaces. From the resurgence of maximalism to innovations in eco-friendly materials, this year’s trends reflect an ongoing shift towards more personalised and mindful interiors that truly make a statement. As a homestager I am also acutely aware of the impact of trends on perceived home value. Sellers need to be wary of ensuring their homes don’t look outdated. This can seem incredibly daunting and expensive; however, there are plenty of ways to give a nod to a trend without renovating your whole house and breaking the bank in the process.
Colourways that are continuing to be in trend are soft corals or terracotta, which reflect earthy undertones, yet bring about an energy to the home. A pared back neutral colour palette opens up the home and allows a lot of scope to have fun with texture and colours, meaning you can bring in as much or as little as you wish. This versatility is
great to really maximise what accessories can be paired with it, while also working perfectly for living rooms and bedrooms.
These more simple colour schemes look remarkable with accents of greens and browns, while brass or gold accessories continue to add a minimalistic and artisanal finishing touch to furnishings and décor.
Generally, the prevailing trend is to embrace colours which evoke feelings of well-being, positivity and comfort in a time of economic unsettlement. On the other hand, flooding a room with one colour can be highly impactful and lean more towards the shift back to eclectic interiors and maximalism. Dulux’s Colour of the Year for 2025, ‘True Joy’, an uplifting yellow that intends to ‘fill our homes with optimism’, is an ideal example of potential to fill a room from floor to ceiling in a monotone.
Interior design is embracing all things vintage with a particular focus on the 1970s. The great thing about this is that you may be able to play around with what you, your friends and family already have or make the most of the vintage and antiques sellers in your local town or through third party online platforms like
Vinted. Not only is this a more sustainable way to decorate your home, but you can often find absolute treasures at a fraction of the price of a high street alternative.
1970s interior design is laid-back and fun, and its comeback is allowing us to play around with abstract designs, natural materials and flowing shapes in rich, earthy colours such as terracotta. A great way to incorporate this is by adding accent pieces such as cushions and throws. Try to not clutter your space with too many details, but add texture and colour through curtains, rugs and bedding. Keeping your accessorising minimal will help to promote a calm and clear space that is functional but inviting.
Curved furniture is going to continue to be big during 2025, particularly in living rooms. Think fluid, curved forms that add a modern feel, in contrast to structured straight lines. A curved edge gives a softer, more relaxed, and almost romantic feel to a room. Rounded furniture isn’t just reserved for c-shaped sofas, it also works well for side tables, contemporary chairs, and co ee tables – visually appealing as it gives the sense there is more space for movement.
Organic and inviting, curved cabinetry looks more expensive and luxurious. We saw people begin this trend with arched bookcases and doorways becoming increasingly more desirable, but this trend has now expanded into the curved fronts of side units, wardrobes and seating.
The benefit to curved furnishings is also storage capability, with rounded edges adding more roominess to closet doors and drawers for example. With less people expected to move home, a decluttered and Zen space will be an essential.
Biophilic design still has its place in 2025, as bringing the outside in reigns supreme for designers. However, reclaimed and engineered wooden furniture, carved surfaces and even outdoor ceramics are enhancing this trend for the better – it’s no longer just about houseplants, but about nature bringing an element of joyfulness and serenity into the home.
While houseplants help to inject a pop of colour to a room and also bring about health benefits through their air purifying functionality, there is now much more focus on nature inspiring materials, structural forms and colours.
The concrete and ceramics trend for instance has been shifted towards coloured concretes and outdoor inspired tiling that is reflective of leaf like patterns and water. Indoor trees are becoming a structural composition in rooms, while seating is no longer being faced towards TVs, but towards windows and natural lighting in the home.
As consumers become more eco-conscious, choosing key pieces which are perhaps a little more expensive but will stand the test of time is becoming more important. Small and portable lighting which can be moved from room to room, an irregular and artistic statement rug, or a bold and unique chair that can be paired with multiple colour schemes, are all gaining traction in the interior design world. These key pieces do all the talking in an otherwise neutral room and can be repurposed seasonally to ensure sustainable styling.

Patrick Wright, Director of Sport at St George’s School Windsor Castle, shares his top tips for developing a love of movement in 2025
According to a YouGov survey, over half of all new year’s resolutions in 2024 involved doing more exercise or otherwise improving physical fitness. Yet only half of those surveyed managed to keep to any of their resolutions over the previous year. The benefits of sport are well documented. So what steps can we take to develop a long-lasting love of movement in 2025 and beyond? Many of the strategies we use at St George’s School Windsor Castle are as applicable to adults as they are to children.
In addition to the traditional prep school rugby, cricket, netball, hockey and football, we encourage students to try as many di erent sports as possible. During ‘Sports Options’ afternoons, children can try their hand at a range of activities such as padel, CrossFit, ultimate frisbee and climbing. There are also around 40 di erent sports-related after school
clubs throughout the year. The more activities trialled, the higher likelihood of finding at least one, and hopefully many more, which ignite a passion to embrace movement longer term.
Even the greatest of athletes started out as beginners. To develop confidence and important foundational movement skills, any new activity should be built up gradually. At St George’s, our students follow our progressive ‘4Ps’ sports pathway programme: Play, Participate, Progress, Perform. By moving
from initially focusing simply on enjoying being active, through the introduction of competition and then the development of specialist and increasingly advanced skills, crucially, motivation remains high. By nurturing a ‘love of the game’, pursuing it further becomes the natural choice.
We are incredibly lucky to have several highly successful sportsmen and women among the teaching sta at St George’s. In November Lenny Conetta brought back a gold medal for England from the O55s Hockey World Cup in Auckland and Lindsay Barlow regularly competes in World Triathlon Championships, to name but two. By drawing inspiration from others, it makes the seemingly impossible, possible.
Finally, it is really important to both recognise and celebrate success. Depending on where someone is on their individual sporting journey, success could be our Year 6 students winning the IAPS Small Schools Under 11 Netball Tournament. It could also be a child mastering their first ever tackle, or someone setting a new personal best at the high jump. Frank Dick, the British Athletics Federation’s former Director of Coaching, defines winning not by the position in which you cross the finish line, but by “being better today than you were yesterday, every day”.

Swanbourne House, day and boarding prep school in Buckinghamshire, near Milton Keynes, is delighted to welcome Sarah Eifion-Jones as its new Deputy Head Academic. With a distinguished career spanning over 15 years in teaching and educational leadership, Sarah’s arrival this term has marked an exciting new chapter for the school’s academic vision.
Previously Assistant Master, Academic at Westminster Under School, one of the UK’s top-performing prep schools, Sarah transformed the way pupil attainment was measured, developed an enriching curriculum
and played a key role in guiding pupils to achieve outstanding results at leading senior schools. Her approach, centred on educating the whole child, aligns perfectly with Swanbourne House’s ethos of nurturing curiosity, independence and academic excellence.
Sarah says: “Joining Swanbourne House at such a pivotal moment is incredibly exciting. The Pre-Senior Baccalaureate (PSB) curriculum at Swanbourne is a forward-thinking approach to education that prioritises pupil well-being and character development, alongside academic rigour. It equips children not only with knowledge, but also the essential skills to thrive in an ever-changing world. I’m thrilled to bring my experience to help pupils flourish here.”
“THE PSB CURRICULUM AT SWANBOURNE IS A FORWARD-THINKING APPROACH TO EDUCATION”
The PSB is a modern curriculum designed to prepare pupils for the demands of senior school and beyond. It focuses on key skills such as independence, collaboration, critical thinking and resilience, alongside a strong foundation in traditional academic subjects.
In practice, the PSB transforms learning into an engaging and holistic experience. For example, Year 7 pupils recently created cell models as part of their science curriculum, blending academic knowledge with creativity. Whether crafting a cell from modelling clay or designing a digital nerve cell, pupils demonstrated their understanding in imaginative and personalised ways. Similarly, geography lessons bring tectonic theories to life through hands-on activities, where pupils build and evaluate models of plate boundaries.
Being part of The Stowe Group enhances Swanbourne House’s educational o ering through initiatives like Change Maker Days at Stowe School. These experiences develop key attributes such as leadership, creativity and emotional intelligence, empowering pupils to face future challenges with confidence. For instance, during a recent Change Maker Day, pupils explored the Gaia project – a stunning six-metre floating sculpture of Earth displayed in Stowe’s Marble Hall. They engaged in workshops spanning art, photography, music, and science, using the installation as inspiration to think critically, collaborate, and express their creativity.

A successful international online school has launched in the UK with plans to disrupt the traditional boundaries of education across the country. Unlike any other virtual school, School Beyond Limitations (SBL) teaches children in small, mixed-age groups of eight, via collaborative projectbased learning, which focuses specifically on their own personal interests. On a mission to deliver a more meaningful and personalised education where every child can flourish outside of the rigidity of an outdated curriculum, its pupils are also involved in the design of their own learning from primary school and can choose their preferred educational pathway in secondary school and beyond. SBL believes it is the only school to embrace every aspect of learning from academic and creative to emotional, social and spiritual, to leadership coaching, entrepreneurial and financial education as part of its daily teaching. The school also runs three in-person school residentials every year for experiential learning, and delivers personalised one-toone mentoring for its students, as well as a bridging year for post-sixth form students needing support with their future. school-beyond-limitations.com

The annual house cross-country run at St George’s School Windsor Castle had a ‘pawsome’ twist this year. Before braving the cold to complete the unique course around the private grounds of Windsor Castle, the children had their faces painted to resemble cats and dogs, in honour of their chosen charity, Battersea. Completed by students from Years 3-8, the children covered a distance ranging from 1.2 miles to 2.4 miles each, depending on their age, raising almost £2,500 in donations from friends and family in the process. Speaking about the event, Kevin Wills, Senior Deputy Head, comments:
“The children all did fantastically well. It was certainly chilly, but the students rose to the challenge and supported one another to cross the finish line in aid of a very worthy cause. Also,” he adds with a smile, “our school dog, Olive, would be incredibly proud!” stgwindsor.org
