emember, remember November is the month to really lean into the whole mulled wine, big jumpers, cosy getaways way of life. It is also, dare I say it, time to start mentally preparing for the Christmas period. Luckily, those dwelling in South West London can forestall the onset of constant Jingle Bells and Wham! with a more cultural happening in the form of Wimbledon International Music Festival. This prestigious event comes hard on the heels of Wimbledon Bookfest and will bring together some of the biggest names in classical music such as pianist Angela Hewitt,

violist Tabea Zimmermann, cellist Raphael Wallfisch, tenor Christoph Prégardien, and the queen of

percussion Dame Evelyn Glennie. With November also comes the advent of party season; we have some fabulous goth-chic suggestions from our fashion editor Charlotte Adsett as well as a beauty page full of gold-inspired pots and potions to add a little sparkle to your regime. In that glamorous vein, our interview this month is with Putney local Yasmin Le Bon who has just designed a new range for Winser London; think bright colours and comfy knits. If you’re considering a skiing holiday, you could do a lot worse than jet set favourite St Moritz, our November travel story. I hope you enjoy the issue. Ciao! u

The Wimbledon International Music Festival returns with its most impressive line-up yet W o r d s j o h n h aw k s

I

n just the past few years, SW19 has given birth to two cultural festivals of genuine international importance; hard on the heels of October’s starstudded Wimbledon Bookfest comes the extraordinarily rich array of fame and talent in November’s Wimbledon International Music Festival. The success and growth of this event, pioneered less than a decade ago by Anthony Wilkinson, is perhaps the more surprising since the town still has no dedicated concert venue at all. For the moment let’s be thankful for the fine Victorian churches that host our local music making – despite their restrictions of size and acoustics, the festival is thriving, and now more than ever demonstrates the need and opportunity for a state-of-the-art new concert hall in Wimbledon. But that’s another story… Music buffs can’t fail to be impressed by this year’s list of soloists: top names such as pianist Angela Hewitt, violist Tabea

Zimmermann, cellist Raphael Wallfisch, tenor Christoph Prégardien, and the queen of percussion Dame Evelyn Glennie need no introduction, and by now hot cakes are more plentiful than tickets. But there are still peaches available – the celebrated Skampa Quartet, for instance, on 14 November in a lovely programme of chamber music from their native Czech

The festival’s

UNDERLYING THEME THIS YEAR is the influence of FOLK MUSIC Republic. Dvorak’s Tenth Quartet in E flat is as perfect an example as any of his characteristic sweetness on the ear, and Smetana’s First in E minor “From My Life” is one of the great classics of the repertoire, including as it does the famous and touching depiction in sound of the onset of the composer’s deafness. And don’t be put off by the third piece in the programme, Martinu’s Quartet No.5, typical of his highly attractive neo-classical style. The festival’s underlying theme this year is the influence of folk music, and indeed the opening event on 12 November is given by local groups performing David Fanshawe’s “African Sanctus”. And the very next day, the renowned Hungarian folk ensemble Muzsikás are joined by the Skampa Quartet

15 B&C_Nov16_UK_Local.indd 15

in an exciting fusion of folk and classical. Another jewel which shouldn’t be missed is the recital on 23 November by master violinist Christian Tetzlaff. Bach’s Partitas and Sonatas for solo violin are incomparable, of course, and he performs one of each; but if there’s any other piece that begins to approach their supremacy it’s the great sonata by Bartok, one of his last works written in 1944 for Yehudi Menuhin. It’s fiendishly difficult to play but wonderfully impressive to listen to, and you’re unlikely hear it better done than this. Another chamber concert which catches the eye is given by the Sitkovetsky Piano Trio on Saturday 19th - Haydn’s “Gypsy” Trio and Dvorak’s folk-inspired “Dumky” Trio are two of the delicious works they include; the third is equally entertaining, the Trio by Charles Ives, written with a mischievous glint in his eye. The second movement weaves together fragments of American folk and Yale fraternity songs. The festival ends with Wimbledon’s very own Academy Choir and Players performing Bach’s glorious Christmas Oratorio with four fine soloists. This is a particularly special event as it marks the retirement of the Choir’s founder and conductor, Andrew Edwards. The quality of music making he has achieved in the past 36 years is quite remarkable, and Wimbledon should count him among its most distinguished sons. It’s a truly magnificent line-up. One’s tempted to think that at this rate “Wimbledon Fortnight” may soon start to mean something other than that great event down the road. u wimbledonmusicfestival.com

Bon Marche

Putney local Yasmin Le Bon has designed a new clothing collection for Winser London. Here she discusses fashion and family Wo r d s p e a r l b oy d

PEARL BOYD: It must be very exciting to design a fashion collection. What do you enjoy most? YASMIN LE BON: It’s a wonderful thing to be part of a creative team – to work with creative people who know so much technically and who you can learn from. It’s great to be learning – that’s what I really enjoy - developing ideas, thinking about things. I had some specific ideas and I’ve been helpfully led and we’ve developed things together. That’s the beauty of doing this type of project. I don’t think you can do anything on your own in life.” PB: Has London influenced your collection? YB: I love London. I live here and feel very attached to it. I can’t think of another capital city that has so much diversity of everything – bars, music, culture and wonderful surroundings. I live in Putney so I have Richmond Park on my doorstep. To me that’s a huge inspiration. I couldn’t just live in a concrete jungle, I have to have nature around me all the time that’s what I’m constantly inspired by.” PB: Putting your name on something is personal – you’re sharing something of yourself with other people. How do you

think your new collection shows your personality? YB: Putting your name to anything is a really personal thing and you are laying bare your soul to some extent. It’s actually quite a liberating experience and a challenge and it’s a very good thing. I’m naturally a very shy person, so having to get over the idea of being judged and just wanting to express yourself in the hope that someone else is going to get what you’re after is actually a thoroughly enjoyable experience. And learning to compromise. Being part of a different kind of team has been a real education. PB: What was the mood and inspiration behind your collection? YB: I’m obsessed by classic cars. I have been for some time. I read classic car magazines from cover to cover. They are a big element in this collection. Part

ARTS & CULTURE / PROFILE of why I love classic cars is because I like classic design. I love design in general. You would never mistake one car for another, whereas now they all look similar. I love the whole idea of lady racers – at the beginning of motor racing there were a lot of women racing cars. Women enjoyed cars just as much as men and many of them were doing rallies all over Europe. I was really fascinated by the idea of women in that powerful, active, adventurous role. This collection has a real vintage feel to it. I love vintage clothes, vintage design. I love vintage car racing and that idea of the adventurous spirit and the adventurous woman who raced classic cars is behind this collection.

to me. That’s what developed the floral silk print design. It’s so much to do with coming upon the right thing at the right time. PB: How did you choose the fabrics, colours and prints? YB: There’s one fabric that I really wanted: a beautiful English herringbone tweed. To me it’s just gorgeous. It’s luxury. You could go out in the winter or the summer in it and it would keep you warm or keep you cool. It’s resilient yet still pure luxury. The English tweed came from that whole idea

PB: Are any of the pieces inspired by clothes you already own? YB: There are always things when you’re looking at designing a collection. You cherry pick from all sorts of areas. You look back at your own wardrobe - things that really worked – whether it was a great colour or texture. Or maybe something you thought didn’t quite work and you want to revisit it. I went vintage shopping in the States and found a wonderful flower brooch that really spoke

I like BLURRING the BOUNDARIES of nightwear and DAYWEAR

I like the idea of blurring the boundaries of nightwear and daywear. I’ve walked around wearing pyjamas and nightdresses in the daytime forever. I think it’s an incredibly luxurious statement. I wasn’t really thinking of the woman I was designing for – I was really thinking of me. Completely selfish. I want every piece!”

of old racing suits and utility wear. Something that’s really practical but I wanted it to be luxurious as well, so it has an incredibly soft feel to it. Also the idea of the silk pyjama – that’s very much that 20s, 30s woman. She was very liberated and willing to take risks.”

Behind the scenes designing for Winser

PB: What type of woman are you designing for? YB: My woman is definitely adventurous and slightly athletic and sporty – she is playful.

19 Chis_Nov16_YASMIN LE BON.indd 19

PB: Are there pieces that your daughters will want to borrow? YB: I know what they’ll be after – the silk pyjama pant and the striped jumper. I can imagine my daughters’ generation wearing that with their ripped jeans or a big circular skirt – quite crazy. I think there’s an element for every generation.” PB: We know Simon loves clothes too – what does he think of your collection? YB: I have a feeling that Simon expects me to make the YLB Herringbone Tweed Zip Jacket for him. It’s not a man’s collection at all but when I told him what I was doing he instantly leapt up and said “Oh great! Can you do one for me?”.  winserlondon.com

elam is a luxe knitwear boutique with a global story. All yarns are Italian – the finest cashmere – and the dyes are Iranian. Ancient techniques applied to tribal Gabbeh rugs are used to create organic colours with an irregularity in appearance that delivers a collage effect, making each piece unique. The dyes come from native plants and roots such as pomegranate skin; the yarns are hand-dyed and left to dry in the sun in Iran before being sent back to Italy for knitting. 'Each piece is as unique as the person wearing it,' says Delam founder Lili Di Michele. The colours are subtle yet rich – all intriguing shades named things

Each piece is as UNIQUE as the person wearing it like Sumac Red and Walnut Brown, while sweaters and cardigans come in stylish shapes. There are bell sleeves, various different cuffs, flattering hems and lots of feminine designs, all reworking the traditional sweater. Delam - meaning 'my heart' - promises to 'tell stories through colour' and these luxurious pieces will capture hearts in west London and beyond. u

t started life as a market stall on Northcross Road and now mac&miller. has grown into in a beautifully styled pop-up womenswear boutique where visitors can find a pile of battered vintage Vogue’s to flick through whilst sipping a glass of bubbles at ‘Prosecco o’clock’ (rumoured to be between 3-4pm on Saturdays). The ambient and distinctive smell as you walk in comes courtesy of Soho House beauty brand Cowshed of which stylist and owner Katie Greengrass, is the only stockist south east of the river. East Dulwich is a stylish community of young mums and fashion-conscious women, so Katie’s collection includes a carefully curated mix of high street labels, some of which can also be found stocked in Topshop and on ASOS, that appeal to all tastes as well as every single age, size and shape.

Boutique shopping is a dying trade in the fashion industry in the UK and it is Katie’s dream to revive the scene by offering her customers high-quality, fashionable clothing at affordable prices. Born and bred in East Dulwich, Katie Greengrass began her career in fashion as a stylist and costume designer for TV, film and the music industry. Her celebrity clients include Plan B, Alesha Dixon and Robbie Williams. Katie’s commitment to providing a personal touch can be demonstrated by a polaroid wall in the shop dedicated to snaps of customers wearing her clothes. VENISON TARTARE & CELERIAC REMOULADE ean and full-flavoured venison doesn’t need a gutsy red wine when served as a cold starter with tangy remoulade and an egg yolk. Far better is a lighter red like a Pinot Noir, and this one from the Loire Valley is glorious with red cherry flavours. PUMPKIN RAVIOLI & PARMESAN his is a case of pairing local with local – an Italian wine for an Italian dish. The sweetness of the pumpkin filling, especially if there is sage in the mix, is a beautiful match with a good quality, zesty dry Pecorino (the wine grape, not the cheese), which just happens to love lashings of tangy parmesan cheese too. ● Harvey Nichols Pecorino 2014, £12 harveynichols.com

FOOD & DRINK / RESTAURANT REVIEWS BabaBooM Kebabs but not as you know them in SW11 Wo r d s E ly s i a Ag n e w

orget the regretful late night kebabs of your youth, Bababoom are taking the notoriously dirty snack back to its Middle Eastern roots. The trick is in the grilling, cooking their meat over hot charcoal coals, the smokey shish is nothing like the one you devour from your local grill at 2AM. First things first, my friend and I order a frozen margarita. After this, a tropical combination of Piquepoul and crisp sauvignon blanc arrives which we sip while browsing the menu. We choose to start with a sharing plate of the creamy homemade Baba’s hummus, served with raw vegetables and flatbread. Seriously moreish, our main courses arrive soon after we finish. We order two dishes; the saffron and orange chicken shish and the lamb shoulder kebab are both served inside a freshly grilled Persian flatbread. The chicken is paired with coal-fire red peppers, Za’atar crisp Fattoush salad and a side of Merguez sausage so the result is sweet and spicy. The rotisserie lamb is cooked well, served with pomegranate onions and a side of grilled Mastelo cheese. We also ordered a side of smashed aubergine that was a little bit fiery so suited the fire grill concept well. To seal the deal we enjoy Eve’s date caramel vodka. A smooth sweet shot with an alcoholic kick to cool the spicy palate down instantly. Chatting to one of the owners, we found out that BabaBoom was just a little bit of fun between friends Ω something that resonates in the space itself. It’s a joyous, flavoursome and fiery new venture that you must check out. We really can’t wait to try the short-rib adana and pistachio flatbread next time... u

F

Trinity

A family favourite for fine dining in Clapham

I

Wo r d s E ly s i a Ag n e w

f you’re looking for something a little special in Clapham Old Town, Trinity is the go-to restaurant. Head chef Adam Byatt’s concept is simple Ω to serve great, seasonal and above all, delicious food. From the moment we step inside, the elegant restaurant charms us with its sophisticated style. Nibbling on freshly baked bread, still warm from the oven, we choose our meals and pair it all with a wine recommended by our very knowledgable waiter, David. We start things off with the crispy trotters with sauce gribiche and crackling salted pork with a succulent centre, soaked up in a mustard-based sauce. Next comes the ravioli of scallop and langoustine, served in a soup of wakame and oyster beignet. For the mains, the sea bass arrives with confit fennel, roast onions, shrimps and basil. The substantial serving of fish is both light and flaky prompting my dinner date to claim it’s the best he’s ever tasted.

Meanwhile my breast of black leg chicken with truffled boudin blanc, sweetcorn and trompettes is experimental and delicious. The roasted seaweed gnocchi with Westcombe ricotta, lemon and buttered sea vegetables is a surprisingly light dish that rounds off our savoury course perfectly. For a sweet finish, I order the salted caramel custard tart which is a very contemporary twist on the old classic that reminds me of my childhood. My dinner dates enjoy the chocolate cremosa and the raspberry tartlet with aerated white chocolate and violet ice cream before the evening comes to a close with a coffee and a macaroon, a pleasant final touch. For a special gastronomic experience in a relaxing atmosphere, treat yourself to an evening at Trinity where you will go on a truly exquisite journey of local produce, delicate flavours and silver service. u ● T R I N I T Y R E STAU R A N T

ADAM’S FAMILY

We meet Adam Byatt, the man behind Clapham’s Trinity, Trinity Upstairs and Bistro Union Wo r d s E ly s i a A g n e w

ELYSIA AGNEW: How did break into the industry? ADAM BYATT: I was fortunate enough to work at Claridges and The Square early on in my career. For differnt reasons, both were invaluable experiences that shaped me into the chef that I am today. Claridges and the then head chef John Williams, taught me how to work, organise and operate in a high-end kitchen. He taught me discipline and structure. Phil Howard at The Square taught me to cook in a restaurant environment, to understand the seasons and how the restaurant business really works. I have a limited but meaningful CV. EA: Tell us about Thyme, your first venture in Clapham? AB: Thyme was my first solo venture, people generally have more fond memories of it than me but there is no doubting that it was the start of my journey into being a restaurateur. A bit like Upstairs, I changed the menu every day and it served small plates at very reasonable prices. But it was incredibly inconsistent and haphazard. Upstairs is much more controlled and there is an enthusiasm that is new. EA: How did Trinity come about? AB: Quite naturally. I was ready to return to my roots in Clapham with a rejuvenated approach to fine dining. When we started out, way back in 2006, our self-set mission was to serve

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

B&C_Nov16_Adam Byatt.indd 46

great food. It had to be seasonal, inspirational and, above all, delicious. Now in our tenth year, our priorities have not changed. We aim continuously to provide our guests with a memorable gastronomic experience. It could be a fine, cheerful lunch, or it might be a magnificent dinner to celebrate a special occasion.

I was ready to RETURN to my ROOTS in CLAPHAM with a rejuvenated APPROACH TO FINE DINING

EA: How do you balance your time between the three restaurants in Clapham? AB: That’s a very good question! I tend to divide my week up equally between the restaurants, but as with so many things, there never seems to be enough time in the day. Much of what has enabled all of the restaurants to thrive is our team and their incredible commitment throughout the years. There are a lot of great people who have been with me since the very beginning. Together we form an opinion of what the restaurants should stand for, what their goals are, what their culture feels like, and what the restaurants feel like as a dining experience. EA: How do your diners differ in each of the restaurants? AB: I thinks it’s less a matter of how the guests themselves differ than it is a case of how their dining experience differs. We are fortunate enough to have a wonderful

46 11/10/2016 16:00

FOOD & DRINK / PROFILE local following and tend to see our guests at each of our restaurants on different occasions. I like to think of Trinity as the restaurant for special celebrations, while Upstairs is the kind of casual food that I like to eat and Bistro Union as an extension of the food that I cook at home. Each of the three experiences offers something personal to our guests, albeit in different ways. EA: You change your menus on a regular basis, particularly at Upstairs where the options can change daily. Where do you get your inspiration from? AB: I have a large back catalogue of recipes to draw from, a very definitive style and I think that, after so many years, I have a deep understanding of what it is our guests expect from our food at Trinity. Overall it’s the seasons that inspire the dishes both at Trinity and Upstairs. I love taking a single impeccable in-season ingredient to make it sing and bring joy to our customers. I also eat out a lot which is great for making meo remember a technique or dish that I may not have used for a while. EA: What is your favourite season to work in in terms of produce and menu inspiration? AB: It goes without saying that every season has some incredible offerings, although late summer through to autumn brings us into the heart of game season which is one of my favourite times of year. I always find myself anticipating the incredible variation of birds and

CAPPUCCINO CRÈME BRÛLÉE Serves 6 I n g r e d i e nt s 9 egg yolks • 50ml cold espresso coffee 75g caster sugar • 450ml double cream Milk Foam • 5g leaf gelatine • 200ml milk 20g caster sugar To S e rv e icing sugar, for sprinkling 1 bar dark chocolate (70% cocoa solids)

flavour, and the different methods of cookery required to get the best out of them. We celebrate that choice and variety on our menus during game season, as much of the rest of the year can be pretty limiting protein-wise. EA: Your favourite dish? AB: My favourite dish is never stationary, it changes from day-to-day and seasonto-season. Right now at Trinity, our salt caramel custard tart has proven to hit a chord with our guests. For many of us with fond memories of traditional custard tarts, this is a very approachable dish in concept. I absolutely love a good twist on a classic pudding and for me, this salt caramel custard tart just hits the spot. u 4 The Polygon Clapham, SW4, 020 7622 1199; trinityrestaurant.co.uk

Pour cold water into the tray until half full, then place the tray in the oven for the water to heat up. M E TH O D 1 Put the egg yolks, espresso and sugar into a bowl and mix together well with a wooden spoon. 2 Bring the cream to the boil in a saucepan over a high heat. Pour the cream over the espresso mix and stir well. Pass this mix through a fine sieve and pour into a jug. 3 Pour the mix into the coffee cups, filling them three-quarters full. Place the cups in the tray in the oven and cook for 40 minutes. Test them by shaking the tray gently, the cream should be nearly set with a slight wobble. Remove from the oven and allow to cool, then refrigerate for at least an hour until firm. 4 Meanwhile, make the milk foam. Soak the gelatine leaves in a bowl of cold water until they are soft, about 10 minutes. Bring the milk and sugar to the boil in a pan. Lift out and squeeze the leaves, then add them to the milk and stir until dissolved. Pour the milk into a siphon canister (the same contraption used to whip cream in high-street coffee shops), screw the lid on and place the canister in the fridge. Leave for an hour to allow the gelatine to set. 5 When you are ready to serve, remove the chilled creams from the fridge and sprinkle the tops with icing sugar. Using a blow touch or a hot grill, burn the sugar evenly until dark brown. Allow to cool for 2 minutes. 6 Now check that the lid of the siphon canister is screwed on tightly, charge it with 2 gas cartridges and shake well. Gently squeeze the trigger to form a small ball of foam over the brûlées. Grate chocolate over the foam and serve straight away, with cookies.

The Engadine Valley is enjoying a resurgence among the bright young things and there’s no better place to stay than the Carlton St Moritz Wo r d s C at h e r i n e H a l e s

hen the snow falls she’s found in St Moritz, with the others of the jet set,’ croons Peter Sarsdedt in the 60s classic ‘Where Do You Go To (My Lovely)’. The jet set may have been superseded by the private jet set but the song was right about the glamour of St Moritz – and by the way, say 'Saint' not 'San'. It is still the destination chosen by the beautiful people and is in fact enjoying a new burst of popularity among London’s jeunesse dorée, whose mothers were only babies when Brigitte Bardot was married to Gunther Sachs. It was this German-born industrialist, photographer and sportsman who fell in love with the place and launched the exclusive clubs that made a small village in the Engadine Valley the place to be. But the British love affair with St Moritz goes back even further than the 1960s, to the early days of winter sports. It is home to the Cresta Run, a private tobogganing club, where men (and it is only men except for the last day of the season) hurl themselves down a terrifyingly steep ice track on a ‘skeleton’, hardly

more than a tin tray, round legendary bends like Shuttlecock, at up to 80 miles per hour. While the more cosmopolitan members wear modern techno kit, some more traditional Brits can still be seen in tweeds. Toboggans are very much part of the St Moritz experience and while the Cresta is a private club, both bobsleighing and sledging can be organised. Slide all the way down to Celerina, the next village, and come back up by train. Not having access to a jet, private or otherwise, I arrived by train but this is a memorable experience in itself. Clean and punctual, Swiss trains are the eighth wonder of the world and the steep, narrowgage line, dating from 1903, which carries the Glacier Express actually climbs through a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, under 55 tunnels and over 196 bridges. On the platform at St Moritz I am met by a smiling liveried chauffeur, who grabs my bag and whisks me up to the Carlton Hotel, on the mountainside above the station, with a view to the lake – frozen so hard in winter that they have polo and horse racing there as well as a gourmet food festival. I have very happy memories of a small family-run hotel in Switzerland where I stayed as a teenager, and nothing was ever

too much trouble. The Swiss just understand how to do hotels and although the Carlton is a far grander place, it has many of the same virtues – just scaled up. It is welcoming and service is personal, friendly and somehow totally reassuring. Built in 1913, it has been comprehensively updated to include all the facilities of a contemporary luxury hotel without losing any of its atmosphere. The 60 rooms are all suites with lake views. It closes in summer, allowing everything to be maintained immaculately and the focus to be

fully on being the best for winter. Everything has been thought through. Ski passes appear as if by magic. Staff patiently allow you to try on as many boots as you like before you set off from a basement ski room that seamlessly connects you with the shuttle bus which will run you to the lift and bring you back whenever you wish. There is absolutely no struggling along carrying your own skis. Neither of the two major ski areas, Corviglia and Corvatsch, is overcrowded. St Moritz has so much to offer the non-skier that mere skiing is sometimes overlooked, but there is a variety of runs, open sunny bowls and good lifts, plus the famously intoxicating ‘champagne air’ of the Engadine Valley. It has hosted the Winter Olympics in the past and in February 2017 the World Championships will be held there. There is a seductive spa at the Carlton, with a huge range of specialised treatments. Its signature offering combines five elements: facial massage, reflexology, lymphatic, hot stone and aromatherapy. The 75-minute massage is delivered in a light and spacious room, wittily designed by the Italian architect Carlo Rampazzi, who is responsible for revamping the hotel, in sea blues and greens. A short walk from the hotel into the centre of the village takes you to Via Serlas, the Rodeo Drive or Bond Street of St Moritz. Cartier, Harry Winston, Bulgari,

Gucci and Prada all have flagship stores, while Trois Pommes stocks Jil Sander, Tod and many other international fashion labels under one roof. In terms of dining, the Carlton prides itself on its food, both Swiss and more local Engadine specialities, including wines, at Romanoff, the large, high-ceilinged dining room, where they also offer glorious breakfasts. On the floor below is fine-dining option Da Vittorio, an offshoot of chefs Roberto and Enrico Cerea’s threestar Da Vittorio in Brusaporto, which itself has one very well-deserved Michelin star. Try the tasting menu. There is plenty of nightlife in St Moritz and the ever-helpful concierge can of course recommend and organise things, but there is a spacious and relaxed bar

53 CHIS_November16_Travel_v2.indd 53

just outside Romanoff with an open fire. The temptation to remain wrapped in the Carlton cocoon, perhaps sipping Napoleon brandy like the girl in the song, is hard to resist. I am afraid my answer to ‘Where Do You Go To (My Lovely)’ is to bed for a blissful night’s sleep. 

hen you want to spend a night in central London there’s a plethora of great hotels to choose from. While Flemings is one of many, it first opened its doors in 1851 so has worked hard to keep its space in this exclusive part of town. A wonderful 165 years, and a cool £15M refurb later, it remains a modern but cozy hotel. We stayed in the newly designed studio suite apartment. With gold accents and rich fabrics, it’s a swanky 1930s inspired space separated into three sections: bedroom, bathroom and living room. It’s far more spacious and comfortable than a simple hotel room. Within 10 minutes we discovered the honesty gin bar designed by Distilled authors Joel Harrison and Neil Ridley. Using the equipment and recipe cards provided, we concocted our drinks before sitting on our small patio outside. Surprisingly quiet, we felt as though we were a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of inner city life.

Just 10 minutes walk away from the hotel is Buckingham Palace Ω head there before breakfast to see it without hoards of tourists in the way Ω and Regent Street so you can pop into the world’s best designer stores including Burberry, Agent Provocateur and Fendi. Our favourite place to explore, however, was Shepherd Market. Just two minutes walk from the hotel, we strolled the quaint streets, exploring the boutique shops, restaurants and Victorian pubs before heading out for dinner.

ews of Mayfair (pictured top right) is well worth a visit. Tucked away in a small but historic cobbled courtyard, the four floor, 18th Century mews house holds a lounge, cocktail bar, brasserie and private dining room. Here we ate tender scallops to start and Cornish seabass with leeks, celeriac and peanut to follow. Both were cooked to perfection so the meat was plump and full of flavour. Finishing up with an entire round of banoffee cheesecake Ω doused in the most incredible dulce de leche Ω we rolled back to the hotel on a complete food high.

Schmidt Kitchens are experts in planning the perfect layout to suit your needs and space, carefully considering the type of storage that will work most effectively, as well as where it is positioned for maximum use. choose from, there is something to suit every taste and budget… First up is our ultimate larder storage with drawers. Drawers have many benefits over cupboards, such as full extension runners for easy access and being able to see all the contents at first glance - no more rummaging around in dark corners. The larder with drawers can also be combined with standard shelving and integrated appliances for a sleek, streamlined look. Shown here is the

Arcos collection of Schmidt kitchen furniture, which is ideal for both classic and contemporary schemes. Drawers are perfect for keeping pots, pans, cutlery and utensils close at hand and within easy reach. Blum’s ORGALINE for TANDEMBOX is a practical inner dividing system that will help you organise drawers and pull-outs for quick, easy access, while saucepans and stockpots are also easier to remove with the LEGRABOX elegant box system. In a really tight space, Schmidt has the perfect solution with its extending worksurface that can be pulled out when needed and used for food prep or even a quick coffee, lunch or breakfast. It’s the modern solution to city living. Our Portland design will also complement this wooden drawer insert, which can be used for cutlery, utensils, cling film and spice jars – positioned next to the hob, it’s a one-stop shop for all your culinary needs. And last but not least, a Le Mans pull-out can be installed in any Schmidt corner cabinet for instant, easy access, turning awkward areas into flexible storage solutions suitable for hardworking kitchens. KIDS & EDUCATION / SCHOOL TALK

Moving on up Transition to senior school is hard for many children, but a new study finds that teething problems can linger on... Wo r d s A m a n d a C o n s ta n c e

I

t is something quite depressingly familiar to many parents of teens. In Years 4, 5 and 6, you have a cheery, enthusiastic, bouncy child who wants to do everything at school. Choir, football, drama, drumming, dance, gardening, reading, chess, gymnastics, orchestra, swimming – you name it, they want to do it. And then they start senior school and before you know it the apple of your eye is a slumping morass of negative energy, too enervated by life to do much more than grunt (boys) or throw a hissy fit about something entirely inconsequential (girls). Until now, much of this change has been blamed on hormones, but a new study reveals there may be more to it than that. It has long been known that the transition to senior school is a difficult one. Parents quite naturally think children who aren’t settling easily are having ‘teething problems’ and assume these will subside after a term or two. Most do, but what if they don’t? A new study shows that for a significant minority of students, problems can be long term and, perhaps surprisingly, that these problems can be more defined in Year 9 than Year 7. According to research from GL Assessment which was based on data from almost 32,000 students, children’s generally positive attitudes to school not only decline once they move to secondary, but keep on falling for two or three years afterwards. These problems are not necessarily academic, but can be about confidence, boredom, friendship groups or quite simply their attitude to the school and their teachers. With all available research suggesting that a pupil’s attitude plays a vital role in his or her academic achievement, it is therefore important that these problems are nipped in the bud.

Previously positive ATTITUDES to school DECLINE once children MOVE TO SECONDARY

The proportion of children who feel good about school declines from 94 per cent in Year 3 to 84 per cent in Year 9. Positive attitudes towards teachers fall from 93 to 84 per cent and towards attendance from 90 to 82 per cent over the same period. The biggest declines in all these factors occur after Year 7 and not before. The study also records an increase in students who say they are bored between Year 3 and Year 9, the number of children who say they like their

71 EDUCATION2.indd 71

teacher falls 10 percentage points between Years 3 and 9. That might not be a huge number, but that equates to some 70,000 students in each year group who have a much more negative perception of teachers. Different schools will obviously face different issues. At Latymer Upper in west London, pupils come from a wide range of social backgrounds. Catriona SutherlandHawes, director of admissions at the school, says: “Moving to secondary school can be a challenge for children, particularly for those coming from a smaller school environment. They will worry about making friends, what others will think about them, whether they can keep up with the work. But it is in fact the same for all children, regardless of where they are joining from and Senior Schools will put huge efforts – not obvious to the children – into helping everyone settle in, no matter their background.” Boarding schools have their own set of challenges. Susan Hamlyn, the Director of the Good School’s Guide Advice Service says: “I imagine it can be tricky in the second and third years, especially in boarding schools. Often, children come up with others from the same prep but then, after the first year, they are sometimes separated and the less socially confident ones can feel a bit lost without friends they’ve had since Reception. Also, year 8 is the year, for girls in particular, making rapid and intense friendships and then having spectacular fall-outs and that, again in a boarding school, can create ripples through a house or class. Sensitive house parents see these kinds of things coming and handle such marriages and divorces with tact and sensitivity.” But whether it is housemasters or heads of year or pastoral care, what this study clearly shows is the importance of making sure pupils are truly settled at school, even if that is as late as Year 9. ◆

There is no doubt that any vendor who has chosen to make a price correction post “Brexit” is now reaping the rewards of that decision, as confidence has returned and buyers are making strong offers where value is perceived. Clapham offers relative value to the surrounding areas and values were therefore affected to a lesser degree, it is this robust quality that makes it a great place to buy and invest. Q&A HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THIS AREA?

I have worked in Putney for over eight years and in South West London for 11 years in total. WHAT IS YOUR ETHOS?

Professionalism, in-depth knowledge, and relentless hard work, whilst also being friendly and approachable. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE PROPERTIES RIGHT NOW?

A fabulous four bed Victorian house on Wadham Road at £1,095,000, which is beautifully presented and in the catchment area for one of the best schools in Putney. My favourite flat for sale right now is a contemporary two bed flat on Disraeli Road, in central Putney, perfect for a first time buyer, and with excellent transport links. MARKET PREDICTIONS FOR THE COMING MONTHS?

Since the start of 2016 there has been a pent-up demand building up, as buyers awaited the outcome of the EU Referendum. However positivity is back, and this autumn we have already seen the damn burst with increased viewings and sales being agreed, which I see continuing through to late November. u

I

was once told that you know that you are getting old when you groan while bending down to pick something up. I guess, as I now groan when I bend down (and on the way back up again) that I am perceivably on the more mature side. With age, however, comes experience and as I enter into my third decade as an estate agent, I have experienced the highs and lows of the market and can offer my clients straightforward and honest advice. I have seen some great ups and downs during my time, from interest rates at an eye watering 15% and the term negative equity arriving in the 90s; the boom period of the early 00s with the start of buy-to-let and the birth of property development as a career; the financial crisis of 2008/2009; the upturn through 2010 – 2014 to today with the current market spoiler ‘Brexit’. Through all my time selling properties one thing has remained constant and that is the ability for good estate agents to rise to the occasion. For me this starts with the way I treat my customers. It is well known that the estate agent

My job is very much to care for each customer’s own individual needs and to matchmake

works for the seller, as they are the one who pays their fee, so I always put their best interest first. We should not however, forget our buyers and give them the same excellent customer service. It is in my experience, especially in my last ten years working in Southfields, that the goal of my client is the same as that of my buyer. We work in a service industry and as such we are here to provide the very best environment for the seller and buyer to move on to the next chapter of their lives. With these changing market environments there is constant reference to sellers markets or buyer markets, price increases and value falls. In short, people sell their property for a reason and are committed to starting their next chapter, buyers also

want to move to and commence theirs. My job is very much to care for each customer’s own individual needs and to matchmake, the right buyer with the right seller and help them through the difficult and convoluted process of a property transaction. Agreeing a sale is often the easiest part of a transaction, getting to the stage of completion of contracts takes skill, patience and diplomacy. Southfields has always been a great community and as we find ourselves becoming referred to as a village, I have always been very proud of this strong network that exists between the residents here. As a huge family area I am often found saying “I am only as good as my reputation at the school gates”. The foundation of my success and that of John D Wood & Co. in Southfields is built on the excellent customer service and professionalism we deliver which translates into referrals and testimonials. These are hard earned, but crucial to our success as is our passion and knowledge of the area. We are very proud to have so many great reviews from our customers and buyers. Customer satisfaction you may say. u

This modern home – one of the finalists in Grand Designs: House of the Year in 2015 – has a huge basement which includes a children’s play area that you can get down to on stairs or a wooden slide. The site was originally a bunch of derelict garages before it was bought by award-winning structural engineer Tim Lucas six years ago for £400,000. The site’s transformation into a dream home now on the market for £3.8 million with The Modern House was featured on Channel 4’s Grand Designs in November 2015, and was also shortlisted for a Royal Institute of British Architects’ award, handed out each year to the best new house designed by an architect in the UK. Hitchcock had a lot to thank the capital for; he directed over 20 films here DIAL M FOR MAISONETTE?

lfred Hitchcock has been dead for nearly 40 years but his reputation as one of the world’s greatest film directors survives very much intact. But the cigar-chomping mogul was not always grateful for his early years spent working in London, where he established himself before moving to Hollywood in 1939. The Dial M for Murder director once said that in London “the sky was always grey, the rain was grey, the mud was grey and I was grey”. Hitchcock had a lot to thank the capital for; he directed over 20 films here, using familiar backdrops such as Trafalgar Square and Piccadilly Circus. But who could blame him for preferring the Californian sun, where he worked with some of Hollywood’s biggest stars including Janet Leigh. While living in Los Angeles Hitchcock developed a taste for grand residences and eventually bought a seven-bedroom colonialstyle mansion in Bel Air. But when living in London his home was much more modest. From 1926 until 1939 he lived in a shabby maisonette flat

After surviving the war, Wisdom’s talents for comic entertainment were spotted and by 31 he was a professional entertainer and soon after, a film star and comedian. His most famous character was Norman Pitkin, an incompetent junior employee to boss ‘Mr Grimsdale’ in a variety of different settings, which won Wisdom fans all over the world including, most improbably, Albania. His childhood home is now for sale. It’s at 91 Fernhead Road in Maida Vale where the Wisdom family lived during the 1920s. Norman, his brother Fred and their parents, lived in a single room. PROPERTY / BASEMENTS Traffic management and pavement access can be a crucial part of obtaining planning permission for a basement conversion

GOING UNDERGROUND Londoners are digging deep for space. But how difficult are basement conversions to complete?

But getting permission for a basement conversion is getting more difficult as many London borough planning departments crack down on the more ambitious projects. This year Westminster established a ‘sub squad’ team to process complaints about basement conversions, and introduced a tax to be levied

storey dig-downs that are easy to spot outside a home. Usually, an electric conveyor pokes out of a downstairs window, wet clay clattering from the netherworld below into a skip. “The really big projects that you see in the papers are all about having a basement swimming pool or cinema, but most of our work is about freeing up space and making a period property a usable family home,” says Simon Haycock. “Quite often our projects are about moving the utility areas of a house downstairs and therefore freeing up the family areas above.” If you’re about to take the plunge and go big below, there is plenty to think about. Creating a basement from scratch is a significant engineering project and some experts say it can be more complicated than building a new home. But if you can get it right and complete your project, then the benefits of a basement conversion are more than just aesthetic. Trevor Abrahamson, of estate agent Glentree, says that while it costs approximately £300 per foot² to build a basement, it can add between £1,000 and £6,000 per foot² to the value of the property, when complete. u
