t’s finally time to ditch floaty dresses for cozy jumpers, sandals for boots and beautiful bare legs for warm woollen tights. And secretly, I’m glad. Don’t misunderstand, I love a warm summer’s day spent sprawled on Clapham Common as much as the next Londoner but there’s something comforting about waking up on a crisp cold morning and donning your winter coat (or even, perhaps buying a new one?). With this in mind, our fashion editor Charlotte Adsett has turned her attention to Highland inspired style, with autumnal tweeds, checks and tartans taking centre stage on page 32. If you’re looking for the beauty buys to match, turn to page 43 for our definitive list of the ultimate autumn cosmetics.

This month’s culture section features an interview with the fascinating Dominic West. Despite achieving great fame at the beginning of the television renaissance with his star turn in The Wire, West still lives with his family in a cozy house in Shepherd’s Bush, eschewing glamour for home comforts. Find out about his two latest (and vastly different) projects, Finding Dory and The Affair on page 18. We also have a celebration of all things sixties on page 14 as the V&A unveils their exhibtion ‘You Say You Want a Revolution? Records and Rebels 1966-70.’ I hope you enjoy the issue! u

Showcasing more than 350 objects, including some major international loans, Records and Rebels will be split into six sections to display everything from a Mary Quant skirt suit to the first Apple computer. The exhibition opens with a recreation of Carnaby Street and focuses on the revolution in youth identity in 1966. The thriving fashion scene and rise of influential figures like Twiggy and Mick Jagger led companies to aim their designs towards the younger generation. As the world's leading museum of art, design and performance with collections unrivalled in their scope and diversity, the V&A is the perfect setting for this vast and immersive exhibition. Prepare to experience the late 60s in their finest moments, as the revolutionary era that rocked the world. u The second section focuses on clubs and counterculture and explores themes of experimentation and alternative lifestyles. Drugs, psychedelia and pirate radio exhibits surround the central installation, an evocation of London’s notorious UFO club. Politics is the focus of the third section, with the spotlight placed on the dramatic demonstrations in Paris during the 1968 student riots and the anti-Vietnam movement. Newsreel footage and protest propaganda are used to vividly portray the wide-spread reach of youth solidarity. This exhibition environment is followed by a section on consumerism, which boomed during the late 60s following the arrival of the credit card. Here visitors

t would appear that Dominic West has mellowed somewhat since his days playing bluecollar Baltimore cop Jimmy McNulty in hit HBO drama The Wire. Having garnered quite the reputation as a ladies’ man, the ruggedly handsome actor has shed his lothario image and is now very much settled down with his wife, landscape gardener Catherine Fitzgerald and their three children, Dora, 10, Senan, 8, and Francis, 7. The family lives in a threestorey 19th century house in Shepherds Bush, which the couple converted from flats back into a singular family home and filled with art and ornaments, books and trinkets from their travels and bright textiles, creating an air of sophisticated bohemia.
With Ruth Wilson in The Affair
Having embraced his role as a handson family man, West was understandably delighted when he got the call asking him to voice a lazy sea lion in Finding Dory, the follow up to Disney Pixar’s animated monster-hit Finding Nemo and admits that a huge part of taking the role was to impress his children, who reacted gleefully: “Jaws, floor, game over. Yeah, I've been dining off this for a long time, bragging about it to all the other parents for two years. They all hate me,” jokes the actor. The film is set one year after the 2003 original and finds our finned friends – Nemo, his father Marlin and of course, Dory (voiced by Ellen DeGeneres) - living peacefully in the reef. One day, amnesiac Dory has a flashback from her childhood and decides to track down her parents who lived at the Jewel of Morro Bay in

California, leading the trio on another madcap adventure where they encounter dangerous giant squids, a seven legged octopus and a confused beluga whale who is unable to echolocate. West plays Rudder, one of two cockney sea lions who are tasked with helping our aquatic heroes, alongside none other than his Wire co-star Idris Elba, who plays Fluke. It is the first time the pair have worked together since their days as nemeses on the mean streets of Baltimore, resulting in plenty of playful banter and improvisation in the recording studio. Elba said all he needed to hear was 'sea lion, Dory, Dominic West,' and he was sold, with West agreeing it was a ‘no-brainer’. “I hadn't seen Idris for a long time and the idea of us being in a scene together was great because we actually didn't share too many scenes together in The Wire. We were more antagonists, always plotting, so that was nice – and I was very keen to see him again.” It was actually Dory’s voice star, Ellen DeGeneres, who helped the sequel come about, having campaigned tirelessly since the original. She has said that this is a film that the world needs right now; that Dory’s positivity is something we can harness to guide us through these difficult times. West, having confessed to feeling a ‘sadness’ and ‘change in the air in London’ since the Brexit vote, wholeheartedly agrees: “I woke up the other day and thought, 'Oh great, I'm going to see Finding Dory for the first time with my kids and I couldn't be more excited.' It's the perfect kind of film to get you out of whatever blues you're going through.” Many people think of West as the stereotypical Old Etonian, but the 46-yearold was actually born in Sheffield and is one of seven siblings in a close-knit Catholic family. His father owned a plastic

factory and its success afforded his son’s illustrious education. Recently, West told the Radio Times that being sent to Eton was ‘the worst feeling’ he’d ever had, even comparing it to the grief he felt when his parents died. He does however credit the experience with helping him become the great actor he is today, saying: “I learned to bury the emotional effects of that and then I went to drama school and had to dig it all up again." But academic credentials don’t always lead to instant success and West’s career has been hard won. After graduating from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 1995 there were seven years of bit-parts in films (he played a palace Guard in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace) and small TV roles before landing the job that changed his life in The Wire. Critics and viewers alike were blown away by the gritty and multi-faceted drama which highlighted the many ramifications of the illegal drug trade in America, and were wowed by West and Elba, who played arrogant detective McNulty and drug kingpin Stringer Bell respectively, finding their accents and swagger to be so convincing that people found it hard to believe that the pair were from the UK and not born and bred in Baltimore.
in Showtime drama The Affair, which will air its third series in November. Exploring the emotional effects and fallout of an extramarital relationship between Solloway and Alison Lockhart (Ruth Wilson) after they meet in the resort town of Montauk in Long Island, the show has proved to be emotional, steamy and immensely popular, earning West a certain breed of fan. “I'm getting recognized a lot more, little side-glances. And it's happening in the strangest places. I went to a football camp with my sons during the summer and kept getting all these looks from the mums. You know those, trying to catch your eye and holding
it a little too long. And you have an idea what they're thinking,” he says with a laugh. For his wife this perhaps, isn’t so entertaining, especially after West was reported as saying that Fitzgerald hadn’t watched the show, something he is quick to deny. “Rubbish, I said that as a joke. She's seen it, dips in and out, it's just my job to her, she not irrational like that. Will she watch it all? Of course not, she's a very busy woman with a lot on her plate.” And when pressed on whether she had been on set during one of ‘those scenes’ he quips back with a chortle: “I love that, 'those scenes’. I don't even want to be there during those scenes!” u
I hadn't seen IDRIS IN A LONG TIME and the idea of us being IN A SCENE TOGETHER WAS GREAT
The enormous success of the show not only made the actor an overnight A-lister but also a household heartthrob, and West, who was dating aristocrat Polly Astor (the mother of his eldest child, Martha, now 18), is the first to admit that he got caught up in hyperbole of fame and wanted to play the field a bit longer. He has since expressed regret for his playboy behaviour and is much changed after marrying his former college sweetheart, Fitzgerald. In the last few years he has terrified audiences with his eerily accurate portrayal of serial killer Fred West in Appropriate Adult; been nominated for a Golden Globe in stunning period drama The Hour; and played the legendary Hemingway in recent film Genius. However, his most revered role of late has been as suave adulterer Noah Solloway

ringing is having a moment. In the world of Athena Procopiou, fringing is always having a moment. The Greek designer's inspirations are entirely rooted in the 1970s, with an aesthetic that takes in Janis Joplin, Stevie Nicks and Jimi Hendrix. For her, it's all about floatey, drapey fabrics with psychedelic prints (albeit digital, she's not a retro devotee) and lots of fringing. 'At heart I'm a hippy,' she explains, over a syringe shot called Firestarter at Westbourne Grove's Farmacy. In The Bag We catch up with the woman behind handbag brand Sevda London I n t e r v i e w c at h e r i n e h a l e s
ABSOLUTELY: What inspired you to start designing handbags? SEVDA LONDON: My defining career moment was realising my desire to make a high quality, as well as an ethically produced, handbag fulfilling every possible fantasy a women had in a bag. I only had one purpose in mind: to create an object that is rare, desirable, durable and everlasting.
ABS: Where in the world inspires you? SL: I couldn’t pick just one place! I am very much familiar with eastern culture as well as the west and women’s needs regarding their individual preferences and the way they express themselves. I feel more global than just belonging to one culture. It is reflected in my designs and makes it appealing to all women around the world, east and west.
ABS: Where did you study? SL: I was encourged by my mother to pursue my dreams of becoming a designer so I studied fashion design at the Mimar Sinan Faculty of Fine Arts Textile and Fashion Design in Istanbul. I relocated to London to hone my craft and completed a variety of courses at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design.
ABS: Why did you choose Canary Wharf as a base? SL: Both Mayfair and Canary Wharf are our base. While we have our sales meetings with high end buyers at the Mayfair office, we mostly welcome our private customers in Canary Wharf. Lots of our customers come from the city and we work with lots of people on private orders, so this has been an ideal base for us. We also really enjoy being in the buzz of Canary Wharf, the shopping and the wide open spaces. It is also a great place for style inspiration! ◆
ABS: What is your design process? SL: I use my sketchbook! I am old-fashioned in my approach. Then it’s all about the
I had only ONE PURPOSE IN MIND: to create something RARE , DESIRABLE and DURABLE materials – I spend a lot of time handpicking and analysing each material. And of course London, one of the most beautiful cities in the world, stays at the heart of my creative ability and inspires me all the time.
sevdalondon.com
ABS: How would you define your style? SL: SEVDA LONDON Handbags are ethical, timelessly classic, modern and chic. Our motto is: ‘Designed in London; Made in Italy.’ Sevda London specialises in identifying quality leather and ensuring a well-finished handbag that makes a woman stand out. I want each woman to feel as if each handbag was made just for her. ABS: Who else do you admire? SL: For me there is only one lady who epitomises style, longevity and elegance, all the things that Sevda London aspires to encompass, and that is Coco Chanel.

ho doesn’t love an afternoon spent at the nail salon? At London Grace, it’s even more of a treat Ω with cocktails, cakes and no nonsense cuticle care in one place. We’re pleased to discover that this Putney beauty bar with a social agenda has now landed in Clapham. I arrive with a friend and we are seated at our reserved nail-bar, offered a drinks menu and introduced to our lovely technicians. We’re in for a 'Top Notch' manicure and pedicure. Using the London Grace branded polish, the technician offers cuticle care, shaping and moisturising as part of the procedure. The pedicure treatments are performed dry here Ω keeping things clean and hygienic. For my toes, I go for the ARAN colour. I’m not quite ready to move away from the summery colours and into the bold darks, so I go for a dulled down minky pink Ω the perfect alternative. Each nail colour at London Grace has a story behind it, based on the experiences of the lady behind the venture, Kristen Hazell. Kristen was a design consultant and graphic designer and always dreamt of opening a New York inspired nail bar. A year later, London Grace was born in Putney, before branching out across South West London, now sitting on Clapham High Street. London Grace is the perfect parlour to enjoy some serious pampering, baristas, bubbles, and a girly catch up with friends. Aperol Spritz in hand, I'm pampered and ready to step out into the new season. ◆ ● L O N D O N G R AC E Clapham, SW4; 020 7627 1467 londongrace.co.uk

ou might find that after your holiday the cool beach babe blonde is looking dry, brassy and beyond help. Here are our top tips for healthier looking hair: ● Get a haircut as little as a cm - this will remove split ends and is a great excuse for a new look. ● Get an intense treatment or an Olaplex to repair the damage and re-hydrate the hair. ● Rid your hair of all the chlorine and sea salt with a deep detox shampoo . ● Get some depth and tone into your hair colour.

● Ronde is an extension of Bronde. This is great coming trend Ω a blend of copper red and golden brown works really well on all skin types either as a full colour or as a highlight.
BALAYAGE has
been so big this year and continues TO BE POPULAR
Fa s h i o n T i p s f o r au t u m n by E l l i e We are very excited to see that the new season is bringing low maintenance textured styling, using the natural curl in the hair combined with some smoothing, giving volume, texture and style. Salt sprays and shine products will help to achieve the perfect texture for autumn. This styling really suits the brunette tones and looks great with softened balayage. ● Bronde is a great way to go dark – but not too dark. It was big in summer 2015 and its looking strong for autumn 2016 as an antidote to the over bleached beach blonde.
● Aubergine is back in a big way and works so well for deeper and darker hair that has lost its natural shine. ● Angel lights are big this season. We apply very fine strands of colour through the hair with either foil or meche to boost the natural tones. ● Uber Blonde maximise all the suns bleaching and take it to the next level to the cool platinum tones for a powerful autumn look. Ba l ayag e by M o l ly Balayage has been so big this year and it continues to be popular. It’s a soft technique keeping the colour natural. We use lots of different techniques to achieve the desired results. I love to use a mix of foil, balayage and toners to gain an effortless autumn look. u 3 Bennet Court, 1 Bellevue Road, SW17 7EG 020 3475 6644; anthonylabanhome.com

BROTHER MARCUS Wo r d s e ly s i a ag n e w
alham has grown to become one of South London’s hotspots for food and drink, with new bars and eateries filling up the highstreet. Brother Marcus is among the chic new dining spots. Run by three school friends, it serves up brunch by day and loaded buns by night. As the evening draws in, the sun sets through the retractable glass façade and the rear courtyard is transformed into a cocktail garden adorned with lights and candles. Stone greys, natural wood and emerland greens form the basis of the decor, with large street-side windows and plants bringing the buzzy street vibe and the herb garden inside. Catching the last of the autumn sun, we are seated in the courtyard with two cocktails on the way Ω The Clover: ginger infused tequila, grapefruit and lime, and the Miss Robinson: prosecco, lemon and lavender infused gin. I order The Salty Wench, braised beef sitting on focaccia bread, topped with two fried eggs, shredded potato crisps, gherkins and smoky paprika sauce. My dinner date opts for the Notorious P.I.G, a pulled pork bun with apple and rocket salad, lime yoghurt, crispy corn and Mexican sauce. Mac and cheese balls and sweet potato fries seal the deal. The food here is simple, organically sourced and incredibly tasty. Make sure you catch up with the brothers for a weekend brunch or the best burgers in Balham after dark.

Tiger Dram A bright new concept for the colder months Wo r d s e ly s i a ag n e w
T
reating yourself to an Indian meal can sometimes mean overindulgence and a feast leaving you feeling full and fragile. This autumn, one of South West London's most popular restaurants turns this idea on its head, offering an exclusive Indian dining experience. There’s nothing more authentic than Cornish Tiger’s new venture, so we head over to check it out. Tiger Dram is a new pop-up curry and whisky house with its own secret entrance and tapas-style dining. Combining whisky and curry is an authentic concept that many of us may not be familiar with, but it works, it works so well. Setting up its new home in the back room of the celebrated Cornish Tiger on Battersea Rise, it’s an autumn venture celebrating the very best of artisan whiskeys and authentic Indian dishes. It's a concept that Zia Trench, the brains behind the pop-up had always dreamt of pursuing. Sitting in the back room of Cornish Tiger one evening, she realised she was sitting in the perfect spot
for it, it just needed it’s own entrance and it’s own menu. Just months later, we’re here to see what all the fuss is about. We're led through the enchanting garden, seated and ready to delve into this exciting new menu. So once you’ve found the right way in and you’ve rubbed the buddha’s tummy for access, it’s time to admire the space and enjoy the array of artisan whiskeys, tapasstyle curries and tasty sharing dishes. There are four curry options: fish, chicken, lamb and vegetable Ω we opt for the fish and the vegetarian curries, accompanied by the sharers: special nan, dal, plain rice and a soft-shell crab tempura. On its opening night, the dishes are faultless and the service is second-tonone. Our waitress talks us through the menu and finds us the perfect whisky to compliment our dishes. We are warmly welcomed to this authentic new concept Ω and we love it. It’s open until December, so make sure you check it out. TIGER DRAM 1 Battersea Rise, SW11; cornishtiger.com

GLORIOUS GARDEN ROUTE
Safaris, vineyard hopping and gourmet dining are just some of the pleasures of a road trip along South Africa’s Garden Route W o r d s R o w e n a M a r e l l a - D aw
R
oad trips lend themselves to fun, spontaneous journeys. This is particularly true of South Africa’s glorious Garden Route, where the panorama of imposing mountain ranges and dramatic coastlines is endless. The 754-km stretch of the N2 national road from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth runs parallel to the Southern Cape coast, bringing surprises at every turn. Our Garden Route jaunt commences in Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront, where our elegant bolthole, Cape Grace Hotel, benefits from views of the imposing Table Mountain and marina. The bustling harbour, markets and restaurants are all within walking distance, including the Watershed, where I scour over 150 stalls showcasing innovative African arts and handicrafts, decor, fashion, jewellery and furnishings. Across the harbour in Cape Town is the Nelson Mandela Gateway to Robben Island, where a memorable exhibit details the national hero’s story. For 18 of his 27 prison years he was incarcerated on Robben Island, now a World Heritage Site and museum. Tours of the island can be booked at the adjacent passenger ferry terminal. Cape Town’s culinary scene is creating a buzz worldwide, with chef Luke DaleRoberts’ The Test Kitchen and The Potluck Club requiring bookings weeks ahead.

THE 754 km stretch OF THE N2 brings surprises AT EVERY TURN Over at Cape Grace Hotel’s classic Signal Restaurant, Chef Malika van Reenen’s repertoire marries Cape Town’s heritage with modern influences, evident in the Rooibos-smoked salmon fish cake and Bobotie-spiced springbok, not to mention a delightful tasting menu paired with exquisite wines from local producers. And speaking of wines, Stellenbosch has over 150 wine farms across a 30km radius – the highest concentration of producers in the world, many of which grace the gentle slopes of the majestic Stellenbosch, Jonkershoek and Simonsberg Mountains. A perfect excuse to make a detour. Wine tourism is burgeoning here, and with so much to do, we manage to cram some of the best tastings and culinary trips into a three-day marathon. During a ‘Foodies on Foot’ tour, we eat our way through town: lunch at Oude Werf hotel, dessert at M Patisserie, Biltong at Eikeboom Butchery, and a visit to Schoon de Companjie, a cooperative for artisan treats.

Cape Grace Hotel, V&A Waterfront, Cape Town
Stellenbosch is home to some of the region’s finest restaurants. Tokara boasts creative dishes, a contemporary art gallery and romantic views, while Makaron at Majeka House is popular for its quirky décor and innovative cuisine. The mouth-watering traditional braai at WedgeView Country House & Spa is a true feast. Next up – some serious vineyard hopping. A salt and wine pairing of Fleur du Cap’s Unfiltered range at Die Bergkelder cellars includes naturally crafted varieties, and a ‘vertical tasting’ at Stellenbosch Vineyards involves various vintages of the same variety, notably the Lanner Hill Kumkani sauvignon blanc’s 2006 to 2015 vintages. JC Le Roux’s Methode Cap Classique range is a serious rival to champagne, while at Van Ryn’s, the only brandy distillery in Stellenbosch, we learn about the distillation process and pair their award-winning vintages with Belgian chocolates. Staying in a vineyard – the Lanzerac Hotel & Spa –enables us to taste their wines at leisure. Our Stellenbosch sojourn is brief, but we leave clutching beautiful memories and bottles of world-class wines. Just off the R327 turning before Mossel Bay, a long, rocky road leads to Gondwana Game Reserve. In this 11,000-hectare malaria-free private game reserve, the Big Five (lion, buffalo, elephant, rhino, and leopard) share space with many other species that roam free within an immense spread of valleys and undulating hills. At the heart of Gondwana are the Kwena Lodges, their dome-shaped thatched roofing inspired by tribal Khoi-San Fancourt’s Manor House
Camps Bay and Twelve Apostles Mountain
dwellings. Native furnishings bring a rustic feel, balanced with laid-back luxury and 180-degree views. An outdoor infinity pool sits at the bottom of the slope, and it’s not unusual to see wildlife paying an occasional visit here. Early morning and afternoon safaris in the company of our expert guide, Felix, are captivating. We come across herds of zebra, elephant, giraffe and hippo, but most riveting is a pride of lions guarding their kill, an eland. They aren’t perturbed by our presence, even when we return the next day to witness them feasting on the carcass at very close range. A close encounter with an adult elephant is heart-stopping, and spotting two precious rhinos is an unforgettable finale. Fancourt, our next port of call, is a popular golfing destination in the city of George. But for non-golfers like me, the real star here is the Manor House, proclaimed Africa’s Best Romantic Boutique Hotel in the 2015 World Boutique Hotel Awards. Our Oakland Suite comes with butler service, and he makes sure the sweet treats kept coming. Dining at Henry White’s, we satisfy our seafood cravings, and over at La Cantina, the Italian tasting menu of three starters, three mains and two desserts puts even the best restaurants in Italy to shame. We devote a day to exploring the Klein Karoo region’s boutique vineyards – Herold Wines, Karusa Premium Wines & Craft Brewery, and Surval Boutique Olive Estate, where we dine among olive groves. Passing through the town of Oudtshoorn, sightings of ostrich are not unusual – this is the ostrich capital of the world, after all. Not far away are the famous Cango Caves, Africa's largest show cave system of limestone caverns and towering halls of stalactites, some resembling giant organ pipes. The journey to Knysna, our last
55 B&C_September_SouthAfrica.indd 55
destination, is punctuated by forests, lagoons and coastlines. The focal point in this laid-back enclave is the waterfront, with its restaurants and quirky shops. Conrad Pezula sits on the hilly eastern head of Knysna, where an outdoor pool overlooks the Knysna lagoon. Pieces of art from local artists grace the hotel’s lobby, and suites have a touch of retro elegance. A shuttle service takes guests to Noetzie Beach, a secluded oasis with two romantic private retreats: Pezula Castle and Beach Castle. There’s so much to do here – horse riding, hiking in Pezula's ancient indigenous forest, canoeing on the Noetzie River – if you can summon the will to get up and leave behind the relaxing ambience. I can’t. Rounding off our Garden Route adventure, we head for Camps Bay, an affluent coastal enclave on the foothills of the majestic Twelve Apostles mountain range. Our South Beach crash pad is part of the new Blue Views Collection of luxury apartments, and by the time we settle in and perused our private terrace, the clouds are already hovering, the winds causing waves to crash over boulders and rocks. The Garden Route is indeed full of wonders and surprises, and our mini road trip is packed with memorable experiences, most remarkable of which are the safari, wine tastings, great food, exquisite resorts and friendly locals. No doubt, the Western Cape captivates, and I know I’ll be back.

TRAVEL / GULF AIR
Bright Future Gulf Air announces orders of 45 aircraft with Boeing and Airbus at the Bahrain International Air Show 2016 Wo r d s a b s o l u t e ly
S
ince their great success sponsoring the Bahrain Grand Prix in April this year, Gulf Air has gone from strength to strength. Most recently, the Kingdom of Bahrain’s national carrier has announced, on the first day of the Bahrain International Airshow 2016, restructured orders of 45 aircraft with Boeing and Airbus in deals worth a combined total of USD7.6 billion. This order will be made up of 6 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, 17 Airbus A321neo and 12 Airbus A320neo aircraft. The delivery of these aircraft will begin in the second quarter of 2018 and come as a result of extensive negotiations with both aircraft manufacturers. The restructured orders will simplify Gulf Air’s future widebody fleet to Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners and make sure that its future narrow-body fleet will mostly focus on A320 neo Family aircraft. So, what does all this exciting news mean for you and me? Most importantly it means that Gulf Air will have the capability to expand and begin to realise the airline’s extensively studied future network requirements. It also ensures that Gulf Air will maintain one of the youngest fleets in the region while building upon its award-winning reliability and on-time performance. Commenting on the agreement, Gulf Air Chief Executive Officer Mr. Maher Salman Al Musallam, said, “As long-
Marty Bentrott, Vice President – Sales, Middle East, Russia and Central Asia, Boeing Commercial Airplanes, Gulf Air Chief Executive Officer Mr. Maher Salman Al Musallam and Gulf Air Chief Financial Officer Mrs. Sahar Ataei. standing partners, Boeing and Airbus have understood the challenges faced by Gulf Air and embraced our future looking strategy. I am delighted that we have arrived at mutually agreeable solutions to restructure our previous orders with aircraft that are more fuel-efficient, modernised, reliable and which, at the same time, allow Gulf Air to operate our wide and narrow-body fleet at lower operating costs. This is in-line with our mission to put the airline firmly on a path towards long term commercial sustainability.” As Mr. Maher commented later on, “the airline’s future looks increasingly promising.” gulfair.com

ustavian furniture began in 1771, when the future king of Sweden, Gustav III, returned home to Sweden after an extended stay at the court of Louis XVI at Versailles. The young monarch was highly influenced by the neoclassical style and sought to recreate it in Sweden. The Gustavian style that evolved is a restrained interpretation of the French Louis XV and Louis XVI style. Initially, Gustavian furniture was reserved for
Barnes, SW13 0DQ 0208 741 1709 royal palaces. However, the style soon gained popularity with the average citizen. While palaces were graced with gilded furniture, countryside homes were decorated with painted furniture; either white-washed or painted grey or soft cream. The light painted finishes provided a reflective quality that was desired during the long dark winters. Nordic Style London was created in Chelsea in 1993 and found a gap in the UK market as the light painted finished created space and light in the English

t's been a real pleasure to watch this fledgling London brand take flight over the course of 2016, with mama and founder Louise Shill beginning to corner the market in classic styles. The aim of Young Soles was always to take timeless footwear shapes – the fisherman sandal, the Derby, the desert boot – and reimagine them for the contemporary child, using the best materials and a grown-up's eye for good design to improve upon the (let's be honest) tacky and underperforming stuff so often found in kids' shoe shops. Designed in east London and made with care in Europe, the shoes are hardwearing yet supple, so that they mould to little ones' growing feet. They also feature a stylistic simplicity and attention to detail (even when enlivened by all-over zebra patterns or Libertyprint laces) that ensures they run streets ahead of the competition. In short, we're big fans. And so should you be. ◆

Mind your grammar Is Theresa May going to lift the ban on new grammar schools? The debate is raging Wo r d s A m a n d a C o n s ta n c e
F
ew things start an argument quite like the subject of grammar schools. When it was revealed during the summer that the new Prime Minister might lift the 18-year ban on grammars, possibly as early as this month, she was accused by of “opening old wounds” by a Martin Stephen, previously high master of St Paul’s School.
On the one side there are those who think grammar schools are brilliant agents of social mobility, providing bright children with the opportunity to excel, whatever their background. For others they are the opposite, a failed experiment in social selection that merely entrenches advantage and privilege for the few at the expense of the many. Stephen said: “If you condemn 70 per cent of the school populace to sump schools you create a vehicle not for social mobility but rather a mass uprising.” If Theresa May – herself the product of a grammar school – were to lift the ban imposed by Tony Blair nearly two decades ago, it would be a hugely symbolic move for many in the Conservative Party who have campaigned for the return of grammars for years. Grammar schools grew from the 1940s to the 1970s, and by the mid-1960s, 1,300 grammars were educating a quarter of all pupils (and their pupils won half of all Oxbridge places). The best were (and still are) bastions of rigorous academia, where Latin and Greek were learnt as standard and poems learnt by rote. But politics turned against grammars, and in 1976 the Education Act compelled local authorities to introduce comprehensive education. Yet existing grammars still dominate the league tables, often outclassing top private schools, and tiger mothers fight for places with Hunger Games-style ferocity. Yet it is this issue of selection, the

punishing 11+ entrance exam taken to grab a grammar place, that makes these schools repellent for their opponents. Critics say grammar schools cream off only the brightest (or the most tutored) and to introduce more such schools will only encourage the academic arms race that already blights the private sector, and leaves no room for children from less privileged homes. Evidence collected by the Sutton Trust, a charity that works to improve social mobility through education, found that less than three per cent of grammar school entrants are entitled to free school meals, a marker of social disadvantage – compared with 18 per cent of English children overall.
79 EDUCATION2.indd 79
But for politicians like cabinet ministers David Davis and Liam Fox, the answer to this disparity is to create more grammar schools. They are the founders of pressure group Conservative Voice which wants to see a new grammar school system for the 21st century, and has already drawn up plans for 20 new grammars created initially in deprived areas of Britain to boost “choice, opportunity for all and aspiration”. As David Cameron’s government made it a requirement that all new state schools should be free schools, a type of academy set up by community groups or chains, it is likely that any new grammars would take the form of free schools. But free schools are also non-selective, so entrance tests for grammar free schools would have to change. It is possible that new grammars would follow the model of free schools like the London Academy of Excellence (LAE), a very successful selective sixth-form college in Newham that has already sent eight pupils to Oxford and Cambridge. A Westminster source said: “What they [the government] want is to introduce a LAE, but for 11- to 18-year-olds.” But for many senior educationalists, including outgoing Ofsted inspector Sir Michael Wilshaw, any sort of return to grammar education is not the answer. Many have said that they believe the government should press on with the root and branch reforms of A-levels and GCSEs, instigated by Michael Gove, continue with academisation and widen access to technical training. Tony Little, a former headmaster of Eton, said the debate about expanding the number of grammars was the “wrong one to have” and urged a focus on quality instead. “Beware the nostalgic comfort of a golden age. Held up to the light, most golden ages do not glister, they prove to be made of base metal.” ◆

It is difficult to gauge whether these sales are discerning buyers who just want to buy in this area or if they've been influenced by the more attractive rate of sterling. Demand for flats has been good, however purchasers are very well informed of other property transactions and properties for sale. During September a number of new Hamptons offices are opening in South West London and Surrey. u

Having been born and raised in South West London, Battersea is very much home soil for me. I sampled the central market, but returned back to Battersea to continue my extensive local area and market knowledge. Outside of the office I have a passion for cars and playing tennis. u
I started my career in the lettings market almost six years ago in Derbyshire, but moved to Battersea to experience the London lifestyle. In my spare time I enjoy attending sporting events, live music and the theatre. I also enjoy a good brunch at Café Tamra. u
I have been based around Battersea Park since 2010. After a peripatetic childhood taking in countries such as the Philippines, Hong Kong and Papua New Guinea, with the arrival of my second child I decided to settle in the slightly less exotic surroundings of Horsell. u
I have worked in South West London for five years now. As a resident of Battersea Park, I spend most of my time in the park or in nearby restaurants with friends and family. My favourite thing every year is watching Battersea Park fireworks from my window in November. u
MARKET PREDICTIONS FOR THE COMING MONTHS?
I expect an extremely busy period as the hustle continues for everyone to secure a property before they start their new graduate roles, or simply return to work. u

hen I was younger I always wanted to be an astronomer until I discovered a passion for basketball as a teenager. I ended up playing for teams including Wandsworth, Brixton, Crystal Palace and also represented England under 17s. I was offered a basketball scholarship in New York, but due to a severe injury, that dream was never fulfilled. So it took me some years to find my ideal career. I’ve always considered myself a ‘secret geek’ and loved figuring things out. In my early 20s I studied computer programming and sound engineering and I was interested in becoming a music producer. So prior to becoming an estate agent, I was involved in all kinds of jobs from retail and courier work, to modelling and music production. All of these experiences have combined to make me the agent I am today. In 2009 with no experience in the industry, I decided to hand deliver 50 CVs until I landed a role in a small agency in Tooting. I hit

the ground running and within nine months I was engaged in both sales and lettings. It was only a matter of time until I felt that I was a big fish in a small pond and then a friend recommended me to Lauristons. South West London has always been my home and I do not plan to leave in the near future. This part of London is exciting as it has changed a lot, especially over the last 15 years Ω and it continues to do so. My relationship with Balham started back in 1993 as my secondary school was in the local area. My lettings career started in the area between 2010 and 2012. I was based in our Wimbeldon branch for four years, but returned to Balham at the end of May and have been successfully growing the business ever since. I love Balham as it has a vibrant
energy about it. Locals are spoilt for choice when it comes to bars, restaurants, cafes and boutiques. The Northern Line and various transport links in Balham can get you into the city in no time. Our property portfolio is generally mid to high value, though includes everything from studio flats to seven bedroom houses. Prices can range from £1,000 pcm to £6,000 pcm depending on the size. My landlords are based all over the world with our international landlords generally opting for our fully managed service. Our UK based landlords tend to be quite hands on, however the relationships I have with them are all long term and I am always available whenever they need me. Although it is now the end of the rental rush in the hectic summer lettings market, things never really quieten down, it's just how you adapt to the new season. Post Brexit, I believe the lettings market will continue to be buoyant. The demand for rental property will never end, so I am extremely confident that the future of Balham will continue to be positive, as is the future for Lauristons. u

fter just one hit single in 1963 - Please Please Me – The Beatles were so famous that their screaming fans made it difficult to use hotels as a base in London. So manager Brian Epstein suggested George and Ringo should move into his apartment block, and the two bandmates rented a party pad in Whaddon House near Harrods. The block witnessed some legendary parties, one star-studded bash at which all four Beatles partied with Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Judy Garland. Later the next year, The Beatles famously met at the flat before heading to Buckingham Palace to receive their MBEs from the Queen. A three bedroom apartment in the block is now on the market for £3.5m. ovelist EM Forster had five novels published in his lifetime, most of them movie material. They were made into films by Merchant-Ivory - A Room with a View, Howards End and Maurice – while David Lean directed A Passage to India. Forster kept a London flat from 1925, although he spent much of his life with his widowed mother Lily in Surrey. He moved from Bloomsbury to Arlington Park Mansions in October 1939, partly to escape central London following the outbreak of war, and also to be closer to his friend and lover Bob Buckingham. Forster spent one or two days a week at his top-floor flat. The thrifty writer used the flat as a pied-à-terre until his death in 1970. Anyone in their forties or older will remember when he put his legendary energies into supporting the Labour party, usually on-stage with the other Red Wedge headliners such as Billy Bragg, the late Kirsty MacColl and The Communards. But some of his old values have remained. Weller rarely embraces the flummery of celebrity and leads a relatively normal existence. This is his old home on Cartbridge Close in the Surrey village of Send. Weller lived here during the noughties while working on his fifth solo album, Heliocentric and later on his chart topping live album, Days of Speed. SCHOOLS Cost of getting into six of the best
O
n the face of it parents in London’s central boroughs should have a wide choice of state secondary schools to send their children to – there are 112 secondary schools for them to choose from. But of these only 23 are 'Outstanding' and 20 'Good', so competition is white hot for these better establishments and consequently only two thirds of parents get their first choice. To try and allay furious parents and balance the system, most schools work hard to filter applications by prioritising some children over others. These often include those with disabilities, particular religions (for faith schools), academic ability and the most controversial one… proximity to the school. But not all do this. For example, The Grey Coat Hospital in Pimlico where Michael Gove famously sent his daughter in 2014, does not have a catchment area. Parents who want to send their children to an 'Outstanding' state school in central London may have one choice left – to move close to their target school and hope to fall within its catchment area, a trend that has made homes within these areas 25% more expensive, according to Savills. So how much might these homes cost? Here we look at six of central London’s 'Outstanding' schools and the property markets in their catchment areas. u

PROPERTY AROUND THE SCHOOLS:
This is a market for flat buyers, which start at £300,000 for a one bedroom and rise to £2.65 million for a luxury three bedroom. The bulk of two bedroom apartments for sale are between £600,000 and £750,000. Three bedroom flat on the Walworth Road, £1.25m with KFH London Bridge (020 3792 2689)
PIMLICO ACADEMY
Where: Pimlico SW1V 3AT Last inspected: 2010 Pupils: 2,000 Gender: Mixed Type: Academy
PROPERTY AROUND THE SCHOOLS:
Pimlico Academy has a wide catchment area which is approximately a three mile circle around the school, but the schools’ own pupil heat map reveals that most come from Pimlico and Vauxhall. Despite being in the heart of London, it’s largely a house market ranging from £700,000 for a post-war three bedroom terraced house between Kennington and Vauxhall to around £4.5 million for a period two bedroom terrace near Sloane Square. But prices quickly escalate to tens of millions for the larger houses off Eaton Terrace.
ST MARYLEBONE CHURCH OF ENGLAND SCHOOL
Where: Marylebone, W1U 5BA Last inspected: 2014 Pupils: 33 Gender: Mixed Type: Free school
PROPERTY AROUND THE SCHOOLS:
This is an expensive catchment to join. Prices start at £600,000 for a two-bedroom flat to £5 million for a luxury penthouse. But the median price is around £1.5 million for a two bed example.
