everal years have passed since I turned up to school, eager and ready for a new term – and yet September still feels like a fresh start. Summer is over and it’s time to get to grips with a new year. This feeling is helped along, in London at least, by the advent of fashion week. Eyes are out on stalks for new trends and hot, young designers; equally, eyes turn towards the design world to wow us with innovative ideas. Luckily, we have been granted an insight into one of the of the world’s most prestigious interiors events, designjunction. Discover what we found out from the founder about this year’s showcase on page 16. Anyone picking up this month’s issue will notice our cover, provided by Dior and shot by the ever

brilliant Steven Meisel. We gained an insight into the new collection and sneaked a glimpse at some backstage shots of the stunning Julia Nobis – you can read all about it on page 31. Not content with all London has to offer in this most busy of months? Not to worry, our travel feature will transport you to a place of adventure and discovery in Kenya, all whilst maintaining a fabulous sheen of luxury on page 52. All the latest property news and listings for South West London begin on page 75, so if you’re seeking a change of place, look no further. I hope you enjoy the issue. Ciao! u

n recent years Balham has undergone a substantial transformation. The addition of independent food shops alongside a host of multi-cultural restaurants and cafes has really put the neighbourhood firmly on the foodie map. And what better way to celebrate this exciting new direction than to host a food festival and really showcase what Balham has to offer. Following the success of last year's relaunching of the annual event, which welcomed over a thousand visitors and local residents to the area, the Balham Food Festival will return for the last week in September. Event Organiser Richard Chumbley claims that this year will be their most enticing yet. Building on feedback from both last year's festival and the Ritherdon Road Street Party they co-hosted in May, improvements include a professional stage with an exciting line-up of music and entertainment.

menus. New for this year will be the Balham Food Trail map and quest. The trail will take culinary explorers on a tour of the area, making stops to enjoy a series of free or discounted tastings, accompaniments and treats. The introduction of the Food Trail really allows festival-goers to make the most of their experience and ensure they see as much of Balham as possible. Organised in conjunction with Essential Local on behalf of The Balham Partnership, the festival is designed to support and promote local food and drink businesses. Last year Masterchef judge John Torode opened the event and launched his new cookbook 'My Kind of Food' at the banquet. As a 13 year resident of Balham and self-proclaimed 'unrepentant foodie', he is quick to praise the neighbourhood for its warm community and high quality cuisine. With the approval of someone so well-known in the catering world, the Balham Food Festival is sure to be at the top of any food fanatic's to-do list. So make room in your diary (and your belly) for a week-long celebration of what Balham does best. ď ľ 25 September - 2 October; Balham, SW12; balhamfoodfestival.com adayinphoto.com

SHOW TALK
Absolutely meets Deborah Spencer, founder of designjunction, to discuss urban redevelopment, Scandinavian style and dyslexia Interview Pendle Harte
Q: designjunction is now six years old. How has it evolved over the years? A: From our very humble beginning back in

2011 - when we presented just 30 brands in a basement venue in Central London - the show has grown to more than 200 worldrenowned contemporary design brands. This year, the show is going to be even bigger and better at our new location in King’s Cross. Over the course of six years we have built up a reputation for occupying some of the most challenging and ambitious spaces in central London from a 40,000 sqm disused sorting office to a derelict design school last year. Now we are taking over an entire site, with public realm outdoor spaces making it even more accessible. King’s Cross has undergone one of the largest urban redevelopment projects in the UK and is now one of the coolest and most connected destinations in London. It’s the ideal setting to take the show to the next level. If designjunction is at the cutting-edge of design, King’s Cross is at the cutting-edge of the future, encapsulating our core brand values and personality. For the first time, we will be building temporary outdoor structures at King’s Cross as well occupying existing indoor spaces. One of the most impressive sites is on Lewis Cubitt Square, where we plan

There will also be a secret garden champagne bar out the back to relax. designjunction also forms part of the King’s Cross Creative Quarter which brings together all the cultural institutions within the area alongside some of the finest eateries in London – Grain Store, The Lighterman, Vinoteca to name but a few.

to build a two-storey pavilion and have commissioned Satellite Architects to design a monumental façade in front of the structure. The façade will be 70m long by 7m high made up of 4,000 individual GRID cubes with reflective mirrored surfaces. Last year we occupied two sites in central London that allowed us to have a dedicated retail venue and a dedicated venue for trade. This year, designjunction will occupy four locations, creating a mini city with different social quarters for eating and drinking, entertainment, exhibitions, business and pleasure. There is also plenty of shopping from more than 60 boutique pop-up shops, not normally found on the high street.
Q: What are the highlights of this year’s event for you? A: One of the biggest highlights is the move to our new home. Rather than taking over an existing venue we will be occupying an entire site. Key highlights include the customdesigned red monopoly-style houses we are building on Granary Square. Ten of these houses will be filled with immersive design concepts. Under the Canopy area, visitors can experience some of the best shopping from fashion and jewellery to glassware, ceramics and books. One We Made Earlier will be
about art and design. My mind worked in a creative way due to my dyslexia. It allowed me to think more laterally. I loved anything to do with art. At school I would spend lunch time in the art workshop painting, making or drawing things. Weekends were spent going to art galleries. I then did a year at art school and a degree in history of art. I was also inspired by grandfather, who worked in both fashion and retail. The combination of commerce and design felt like a natural fit.
Q: What designers and styles do you admire? A: Scandinavian design is the style I

gravitate towards the most. Great designers such as Arne Jacobsen, Han J Wegner, Verner Panton and brands such as Carl Hansen, String and Hay producing beautiful pieces for the home. Scandinavian design has an understated aesthetic. It’s also affordable, functional and made using natural materials and traditional craftsmanship. I am also a huge admirer of Jasper Morrison, it’s the simplicity of his work that I love. Very minimal.
Q: There’s a new focus this year on dyslexia in design. How did that arise and what is it? A: This is a subject matter very close to my heart. I grew up with dyslexia. At the time, I couldn’t understand why people at my school were miles ahead of me academically. I naturally gravitate towards the arts. It was a subject matter I was good at without any

restrictions on my creative ability. Dyslexia led me down the path of art and design. In some respects it has defined me as a person. When I was approached by Jim Rokos to host an exhibition on Dyslexic Design I immediately said yes. The exhibition, curated, organised and driven by Jim, aims to explore the connection between dyslexia and the creative industries. Looking at the positive effects as well as the challenges that people face working with a learning difference. The exhibition’s main goal is to remove the stigma of dyslexia and reveal it as a gift. It will look at how dyslexia affects a person’s lateral and visual thinking. Dyslexic Design will showcase the work of many designers and illustrators such as Sebastian Bergne and Kristjana S Williams who say dyslexia has enhanced rather than limited their creativity.

Q: And finally - where do you live and is your house full of pieces from designjunction? A: I live in West London, Kensal Green.

Q: How much work goes into organising designjunction? A: Honestly - a lot. This is partly because we take over ambitious venues in London. As you can imagine these spaces present all sorts of challenges. We have occupied a disused Tramshed, old sorting office, school and now an entire site. I can’t complain because it makes the show so exciting and interesting to work on each year. We never stand still. Each year has to be bigger and better than the previous year. I wish we had more than 12 months to work on it. I have an incredible team around me.
My home is like a showroom advert for designjunction. This is the problem when you work on a show like this, you want to buy everything for your home. My kitchen/lounge area is filled with Scandinavian brands from Carl Hansen dining chairs and lounge seating to String shelving. I’ve even got birch trees installed to give a wood-like aesthetic. Pendant lighting across the space is from brands such as Artemide, Nyta and Innermost. Furniture from Modus, Kartell and Moroso. Objects from Moooi, Utopia & Utility, Tom Dixon the list goes on….

ersonally, I have always loved a print with people in it. Figures of any kind on a summer dress are an immediate sell for me, though unfortunately they're quite rare. Flower prints, paisley, even birds, are everywhere. But it's not often that you find a blouse embellished with tiny surfers, ballerinas, tennis players or girls in bikinis. And this is neither a children's collection (as proven by the karma sutra print) nor is it too cute. French label G.Kero is sold internationally with a cult following and its cotton shirts and blouses, bomber jackets and sweatshirts come in prints that are unlike any others

FASHION / BEHIND THE SCENES
Backstage Pass Enter the world of our cover shoot, the Dior Autumn-Winter 2016-17 Collection THE SHOOT
Shot by photographer Steven Meisel and featuring the striking Julia Nobis, Dior’s Autumn/Winter 2016-17 readyto-wear shoot is all about movement. Mobile, dynamic and athletic, the collection is embodied by her freedom of motion revealing the richness of the clothes she is wearing – all enhanced by the glimpses of animal and plant motifs and sensual slits coming to life against a grey backdrop.
THE LOOK
‘Eccentric, whimsical, adorned’, that is how Dior describes this collection. Femininity and sensuality flirt with men’s tailoring to give a feel of assertiveness tempered with a sense of fun. Fussy details are shunned in favour of bold strokes: exaggerated peplums, large pockets and wide, buttoned martingales. Essentially: ‘Dior silhouettes with generous volumes define the Dior woman’s new reality, one that is free and dynamic, current and intuitive.’ dior.com

e all love to schedule in some salon time, but when a waxing appointment comes back around, it's not quite the same. I came across Lavingia, a quaint little salon sitting on Abbeville Road, offering everything from nails and massages, to waxing and tanning. It’s tastefully designed with colourful decor and quirky furniture, creating an unintimidating and genuinely interesting environment. I await my treatment with a cup of herbal tea and suprisingly, I’m fully relaxed and happy to be here! The treatment itself is never going to be pain-free but, with the help of a skilled technician, there is a way of making it as comfortable and as pleasant as possible. I’m in for a Brazilian wax, using hot Lycon. My beautician is very chatty, keeping me at ease as she sets up and proceeds with the treatment. I’m pleasantly surprised and in no-time, I’m good to go. I’m pleased to discover that Lavingia isn’t just a beauty salon, it boasts the best of mid 20th century design too. The selection of artworks for sale are designed to inspire beauty and a passion for the female form. This isn’t just a fly-by salon, even the most dreaded waxing treatments have you wanting to stick around to enjoy the artwork and vibrant designs. My next appointment will be added to the diary without dread. ◆ ● L AV I N G I A B E A U T Y S PA 51 Abbeville Road, SW4, 020 8675 7700; lavingiabeauty.com

FLASH THAT SMILE Dr Sam Afshar of Putney Dentists tells us how tooth whitening can transform your smile
T
ooth whitening lightens teeth and helps to remove stains and discolouration. Whitening is among the most popular cosmetic dental procedures because it can greatly improve how your teeth look. Whitening is not a onetime procedure; it will need to be repeated from time to time if you want to maintain the brighter colour.
vital whitening is done on a tooth that has had root-canal treatment and no longer has a live nerve.
VITAL WHITENING
The most common type of vital tooth whitening uses a gel that is applied directly to the tooth surface. This product contains some form of hydrogen peroxide. In-office whitening allows your dentist to use a more powerful whitening gel. A specialised light or laser activates the gel and allows bleaching to happen faster. Inoffice whitening usually takes 30 to 90 minutes. You will need 1 to 3 appointments. The number will depend upon the method used, how severe your stains are and how white you want your teeth to be.
WHAT IT’S USED FOR
The outer layer of a tooth is called the enamel. The colour of natural teeth is created by the reflection and scattering of light off the enamel, combined with the colour of the dentin under it. Every day, a thin coating (pellicle) forms on the enamel and picks up stains. Tooth enamel also contains pores that can hold stains. The most common reasons for teeth to get yellow or stained are: using tobacco, drinking dark-coloured liquids such as coffee, cola, tea, red wine and not taking good care of your teeth. Preparation Whitening can be done in the dental office or at home. For in-office whitening, your dentist probably will photograph your teeth first. This step will help him or her to monitor the progress of the treatment. Your dentist also will examine your teeth and ask you questions to find out what caused the staining. Next, the dentist or a dental hygienist will clean your teeth. Once this is done, the whitening procedure begins. For whitening at home, your dentist
In-office whitening
ALLOWS YOUR DENTIST to use a MORE POWERFUL whitening GEL
can make trays to hold the whitening gel that fit your teeth precisely. Home whitening gel usually needs to be applied daily for two to three weeks. Over-thecounter kits also are widely available for home use.
HOW IS IT DONE?
There are two main types of whitening procedures. Vital whitening is performed on teeth that have live nerves. Non-
43 B&C_Sep16_PUTNEY DENTIST_adv.indd 43
NON-VITAL WHITENING
Vital whitening may not improve the appearance of a tooth that has had root-canal treatment because the stain is coming from the inside of the tooth. If this is the case, your dentist will use a different procedure that whitens the tooth from the inside. He or she will place a whitening agent inside the tooth and put a temporary filling over it. The tooth will be left this way for several days. You may need this done only once, or it can be repeated until the tooth reaches the desired shade. BREW It's all about the Aussie-style dining in SW11 Wo r d s r u b y f o r b e s
orthcote Road doesn’t fall short of bars, restaurant and brunch spots. Sitting amongst them is Brew, a quaint Australian cafe offering morning, noon and evening dining. It’s speciality being ‘brinner’, breakfast dishes tweaked and served throughout the day. The brains behind Brew is Jason Wells, an Antipodean founder who has created this fabulous Aussie concept that we’re all getting excited about. To kick things off we order a bottle of the New Zealand sauvignon blanc; it’s refreshing and zingy with fruit and oaky flavours. For the starter, it’s a squid and croquette combo. We share the smoked potato and bacon croquettes, and the salt and pepper squid. Next up, the lobster spaghetti Ω the most popular dish on the menu. My dining companion chooses the pulled duck burger, with hoisin sauce, cucumber and radish, served with house salad and skinny fries. The spaghetti is the best I’ve had. It’s cooked to perfection, the sauce is simple yet incredibly tasty and the lobster is top class Ω there’s plenty of it too. And the pulled duck is surprisingly refreshing for a burger dish. For dessert, it's the rice pudding. A perfect little pot of sweetness. Brew has carved a valuable position in South West London’s dining scene - simple dishes cooked and served up oh-so right. We'll be back again soon to try out the 'brinner'.

CAU Wimbledon Steak worth shouting about in Wimbledon Village Wo r d s e ly s i a ag n e w
M
irroring the vibrancy of Buenos Aires, a city where cosmopolitan sophistication meets chaotic energy, CAU is a portfolio of Argentinian steakhouses scattered across the UK, with its first European spot opening in Amsterdam. The star of the show here is the steak. The options are vast and they come in all shapes and sizes. So whether it’s a tapa de cuadril cooked the Brazilian way, a fullbodied ribeye or a speciality cut, the staff can match you with your preferred steak. The restaurant is bright and airy with high ceilings, sky lights and playful decor. The space is simple and stylish, yet fun and welcoming. It’s fresh, it’s vibrant and it doesn’t take itself too seriously. From the green grass painted ceiling, to the blue skies on the walls, and the jaunty cloudlamps hovering over the bar; the space is reminiscent of Argentine plains. First things first, cocktails. I go for the Cau Girl Martini, Absolut vanilla vodka,
passion fruit puree, apple, vanilla sugar and sparkling rosé wine. My dinner date opts for the Cau G&T, a colourful take on the traditional gin and tonic; Portobello Road gin, tonic, pink grapefruit, juniper berries, lemon and lime zest. It’s fresh, fruity and full of flavour. CAU’s menu is inspired by the cuisine of Buenos Aires, with a focus on prime beef and nostalgic comfort food. To start, we order the bruschetta and the tempura belly pork, well-sized sharers to enjoy whilst awaiting the main event. For mains we go with the recommended 260g sirloin steak. The nation’s favourite cut; it’s succulent, satisfying and full of flavour. The dishes arrive with a side of truffled mac and cheese and chunky chips triple cooked and dipped in a smoked aioli. Inspired by the cuisine and the vitality of Buenos Aires, this Argentinian steakhouse satisfies the needs. The meat is good; and when the star of the show is performing this well, the crowds need to hear about it. C AU W I M B L E D O N 33 High Street, SW19; caurestaurants.com

INTO THE WILD We take the trip of a lifetime to find the real king of the jungle W o r d s R o m y va n d e n B r o e k e

hen I was five years old, I remember my Dad returning from one of his long haul trips to Los Angeles. Usually, he’d bring back edible presents – Lifesaver sweets and Hershey’s Kisses – but this one particular time he brought us back something else. Out of his small cabin bag came a rectangular box, a VHS, and on the front was a cartoon lion, surrounded by a pack of other wild animals – a wildebeest, a meercat and a mandrill – all standing proud on a large rock. It wasn’t long before the video was thrust into the player and my brother and I were hooked on The Lion King. Ever since that morning, when we delved into Disney’s representation of the African wild, we have both dreamt of going there ourselves to experience the natural world at, well, its most natural. Our mutual desire to visit the land of lions has never ceased. So after 12 years of discussing, and one and a half years of planning, we were on our way to Nairobi for the trip of a lifetime. The flight with Kenya Airways was a breeze, and before we knew it we were ushered out of Nairobi Airport and packed onto a single engine Safarilink plane and on our way to our first port of call in northern Kenya.

If you’re feeling brave,
THE TEAM AT SEGERA will happily set YOU UP A BED OUTSIDE SEGERA RETREAT
O
ur first stop was Segera Retreat, just north of the equator, on the Laikipia Plateau. This part of Kenya is an important migratory corridor within the Ewaso ecosystem – to put it simply, it is buzzing with life. The resort, which sits in the shadow of Mount Kenya, is a lush nirvana in the middle of wild grassland. Made up of a ring of luxurious stilt villas and an oasis-style private pool, each villa runs on solar energy and has a private balcony facing the bush and an al fresco Jacuzzi, which is ideal for a postsafari soak. While you’re there, you will also catch a glimpse of some of the park’s wildlife drinking at one of the watering holes nearby. If you’re feeling particularly brave, the team at Segera will happily set you up a bed outside, so you can star-gaze until you drift off. Before the land was acquired by Jochn Zeitz in 2005 it was overrun with

poachers. But an eight-year conservation project transformed it into a reserve committed to protecting and cultivating the land and its animals. Alongside this, Zeitz invested time and money on initiatives to help preserve the wildlife and improve the lives of indigenous people. Safari is a bit of a tourist trap. Finding oneself alone with a lion or a rhino is, unfortunately, unlikely. In fact, people warned us to expect a flurry of 4x4s jumping dunes to get a glimpse of anything moving on the savanna. But clearly these people didn’t visit Segera. Our experience here was one of solitude and discovery. The resort has only eight villas, which means it is never overrun. Secondly, it’s the only resort in the 50,000 acres of wilderness, which means a fleet of noisy Jeeps just isn’t a concern. Our game drives tended to be in the evening – a 5.30pm departure, when the temperature dropped – with the hope of us spotting something during three-hour trips. We saw plenty: lions (only a few, mind), elephants, giraffe, zebra, antelope, buffalo and even a hippo bathing at the watering hole by my room. While the wildlife is certainly the draw here, there’s plenty more to enjoy. The food, for example. The staff at Segera will do everything in their power to ensure you are happy and well-fed, and are more than happy to take requests. If

Segera lays on a surprise Out of Africa style picnic in the bush
TRAVEL / WANDERLUST plenty of other safari dwellers, so it’s less intimate than the Segera safari. But the wildlife is abundant: male lions laze under the shade of a tree, lionesses sit in packs across the savanna, the distinctive Masai giraffes run alongside your car, elephants wander across the bush in their hordes, and Black rhino can be found. This prehistoric beast has inhabited the world for some 60 million years and, after years of poaching, is now an endangered species. It is believed there are only 2,500 left in pockets of Zimbabwe, South Africa, Kenya, Namibia and Tanzania. And it

you’re craving pancakes and maple syrup for breakfast, you can have them. Or is chicken curry and daal your favourite? Just ask. Most evenings we left it up to the kitchen to surprise us, but on request we persuaded the chef to cook us up an authentic Kenyan feast including staple dishes such as ugali (a starchy porridgelike substance), meat stews, sukuma wiki (collard greens cooked with onions and tomatoes), chapattis and a coconut kidney bean soup better known as maharagwe. One day we were whisked off to a prime ‘lion viewing’ spot in the bush, where we were surprised by an al fresco picnic that could’ve been plucked right out of the set of Out of Africa. Everything about Segera is on point; they combine luxury with rustic charm, provide a 24-hour concierge service, unlimited game drives, your own driver and allocated waiter, and a type of hospitality you’d expect to find at a friend’s home. To top our stay at Segera off, as we were leaving the resort, our driver David suddenly stopped the car, pointed quietly, and whispered, “Chui”. We glanced in the direction of his finger, and to our amazement there was a Chui (Swahili for leopard) standing by a fence, looking at us. Within seconds it turned away and raced off. But that didn’t matter, we had seen it, and it was wonderful.

J
etting from northern to southern Kenya, we saw an extraordinary change in landscape and animals. From the seared grasslands in Laikipia Plateau to the verdant planes of the Masai Mara, we were onto the next chapter of our African adventure. As the plane glided into land, we spotted a clan of hyenas near the runway, countless
harems of zebra, towers of giraffes and herds of elephant grazing nearby amidst the trees. Life was everywhere. Which meant we were in for a lot of lion sightings. Wilson, our friendly, talkative driver, picked us up and whisked us off to the camp. Comprised of 30 luxury tents, split in half across two camps and overlooking the vast Masai Mara, the camp is on the Oloololo escarpment, on the edge of the Rift Valley. The main restaurant/ reception is an open wooden decked space, adorned with Moschino-style rocking chairs and an unrivalled vista that redefines the phrase ‘beautiful view’. The food is good, but the best dinner was had under a canopy of trees, lit with lanterns, where they cooked up a feast of meat and delicious salads. Unlike Segera, Angama is more about a shared experience. There are communal dining areas where you can socialise with other guests or chat over a bonfire and a cocktail. The drives are different too – there are park fees, and

was the final animal, the one to complete our sighting of the Big Five, and the one we thought least likely to see. But as if by magic, to complete the trip of a lifetime, as we were on our final game drive, there it was, a black rhino with her baby plodding across the bush. And to top it off, not one 4x4 (other than ours) in sight. It was the most spectacular end to the most incredible trip, and has given me my very own story to treasure for the rest of my life. u Economy return flights from London Heathrow to Nairobi with Kenya Airways (www.kenya-airways.com / 020 8283 1818) start from £722.45 including taxes. he suites are set back in the untouched woodland, large cabins offering a decked veranda for BBQ’s and dinner parties. They are idyllic and secluded, surrounded by the natural landscape of the site. We are led through the woods to our home for the weekend, the Amy Johnson Suite. Inside, the decor has a rustic luxe feel with a touch of elegance and class; designed with a nod to Amy Johnson, a local girl and a heroic pilot who was lost on a dangerous wartime mission. Renowned for her romantic charm and elegance, the suite embodies her unique personal style and her “rough glamour”. It’s complete with all the comforts you could ask for – a free-standing bath, a four-poster bed with wooden beams, camp-style bunkbeds, a well-equipped kitchen, and best of all, a tranquil veranda set within the trees. The suite is very well considered, combining local history, sophistication and convenience.

THE SITE
isit The Star at Sancton for “Everything that’s great about Yorkshire, under one roof.” A traditional village pub serving hearty bar meals. And to celebrate everything the village has to offer, the menu sources local produce from the area’s allotments and the pub’s own vegetable garden. Sancton is just a short walk from the site, but if you fancy jumping in the car to explore the East Riding of Yorkshire, head to Beverley, a traditional market town where you can admire the minster and browse the boutique shops. The stunning chalk cliffs of Flamborough Head are just 30 minutes away, and the walled city of York is 45 minutes in the other direction.
A
woodland retreat might be about enjoying your own space in the comfort of your suite, but you might also want to check out The Woodshed – an enchanting communal space where you can cosy up by the fire, unwind with a hot drink and homemade cake, or host a dinner party. Outside you’ll find a canopied campfire – a place for stargazing and toasting marshmallows. Whether you’re visiting in the summer or in the deepest winter, this is the perfect spot for an evening under the stars. You might even catch a glimpse of the North Star.
THE DAMAGE Three night weekends in the Woodland Suites start at £625 in low season, rising to £925 in high season. There are eight suites to choose from, each benefiting from a sitting room, double sofa bed, large bedroom with wood burner, second bedroom with bunk bed and a spacious bathroom.

hen we think about industry, images of manufacturing, deep greys of metal machinery and the exposed brickwork of Victorian mills immediately spring to mind. The latest kitchen design trend takes inspiration from the Industrial Revolution era, combining clean lines and an understated

colour palette with vintage accents that remind us of bygone times. The result is a contemporary space where both style and function are valued in equal measure. It may be minimalist, but each design detail is important. Everything, from the exposed brickwork to the charcoal cabinet doors, copper cutlery and grey walls, marries together to create the ultimate industrial-style kitchen.
M u lt i p l e l ay e r s o f t e xt u r e Smooth metals, rough brick and vintage leather rub shoulders to create a sensory feast for both the eyes and the fingertips. Metal wall cabinets with glass fronts bring the idea of traditional wooden cupboards right up to date, and glossy metro tiles would effortlessly complement them. Bar stools with leather seats, tucked under an island with a rustic wooden worktop, would sit perfectly on a concrete floor. Brick-effect wallpaper or wall art will prove to be just as aesthetically effective as the real thing, even if it does lack the gritty feel. C o o l m e ta l l i c s , wa r m copper and an unexpected t w i st o f c o l o u r Don’t be fooled into thinking that an industrial kitchen is all cold steels and stark black lines. Grey is a modest colour that provides the perfect blank canvas

Industrial style is HERE to STAY
upon which to show off your personality; think of it as the new neutral, 2016’s answer to cream. A cool, solid grey sits in the background of an industrial kitchen, lifting warm copper accents so they catch the eye. Black cabinet doors can be contrasted with white metro tiles, softening the blow of harsher, darker colours. Introducing a strong pop of colour in the form of a sunflower-yellow table can provide a rather unexpected yet welcome juxtaposition to more serious colours, and will make a powerful impact. Just remember to stick to one statement piece here, or else the bright colour will detract too much from the industrial feel.
C o p p e r : b ot h p r ac t i c a l a n d v e r s at i l e The reason that copper fits so well within the industrial theme is because it is known for its versatility. Whether used for cooking, piping or wiring, it has always been synonymous with quality. Its shade of orange perfectly complements the red and terracotta hues of exposed brickwork, and it provides warmth in a kitchen that may be dominated by cool metallic hues. Copper cooking instruments or coffee pots on a dark wood or charcoal metal counter top will instantly catch the eye, as will an oversized copper pendant light. Think about the finer details, as they really bring the industrial theme to life; copper pipes, taps and even light switches would all add another layer to the design.

C u sto m i s e yo u r i n d u st r i a l k i tc h e n to r e f l e c t yo u r personality At first glance, it may seem that there is little room to show off your personality within an industrial-style kitchen, yet simple changes can completely transform the entire appearance of the room. Industrial style is a versatile theme upon which you can make your own mark, and it is here to stay. It also doesn’t mean having to sacrifice storage or functionality; clever solutions can fit in perfectly with an industrial style kitchen, no matter what your space constraints, and can often free up approximately 30% more room. Schmidt Kitchens Wimbledon offer a wide rage of designs in a variety of styles so pop in to their showroom to see eight fully comprehensive kitchen and home living displays as well as a large creative studio where you can see their entire product range, to help you visualise your dream kitchen and find out about their brilliant September offers. hen Magdalen College School, Oxford, triumphed over Hutton Church of England Grammar School in the Debating Matters National Final at the end of last term, the standard of oratory was very high. Sixth-form students Tom Gould and Joel Stanley beat the former champions from Hutton Church at the events held at the Museum of London, arguing that there should not be limits to free speech on social media. Their teacher, head of politics at Magdalen College, Dr James Panton said: “My kids went further than I’d imagined they could and are obviously delighted. But more than that - the whole weekend is a testament to what we can do with smart young kids when we’re willing to push them to take themselves seriously. They’ve learnt more this weekend than in the preceding 12 months. And they loved it” Of course, ‘Top Public School Wins Debating Cup’ is not a surprising headline. The teaching of oratory skills has long been seen as the preserve of public schools, but a charity co-founded by a princess has been working with an inspirational east London school in an attempt to change this status quo. School 21 in Newham is a free school founded by Tony Blair’s former speechwriter Peter Hyman. Hyman has been very public in his belief that speaking skills should be at the heart of the school timetable, denouncing moves by Ofqual a couple of years ago when it decided that teenagers would no longer be awarded marks for speaking and listening in GCSE English. He said: “Speaking eloquently is a moral issue because to find your voice
THE SKILL of oracy is at the HEART of SOCIAL mobility both literally and metaphorically and be able to communicate your ideas and your passions is crucial to how they are going to be a success in the world. If you can speak and articulate yourself properly that will happen. But it’s also the number one issue that employers put in all their surveys: they want good oral communication.” Pupils at School 21, which is in a very underprivileged area of London, are now learning to find their voices with the help of Big Change, a charity that supports young people with skills outside
71 Chis_September2016_EDUCATION_R.indd 71
a traditional academic curriculum. The charity was co-founded by Princess Beatrice and Sam and Holly Branson, scions of Richard. Princess Beatrice told a workshop of 11 and 12 year olds that she initially found school a “nightmare” where she “struggled” because of dyslexia. It was only when she went on to secondary school and joined the public speaking team that she felt more confident. Also taking part in the project was Karl Lokko, who as a teenager had been a south London gang leader. He said the day before he had taken his GCSEs, one of his friends had been killed. "He was murdered by my side," he said. But even being able to "denounce gangsterism" had meant having to learn a vocabulary and way of communicating he had never acquired growing up. Lokko, who read one of his poems to the pupils, said he had deliberately set about learning 10 new words a day underlining words he had not understood in books or articles and then looking up their meaning in a dictionary. Peter Hyman said speaking skills represented a major barrier to disadvantaged young people. Hyman warned of a "speaking deficit", adding the skills of "oracy" were at "the heart of social mobility". Too often poorer youngsters and their families lacked the confidence to speak up for themselves, he said. Hyman said schools should focus much more attention on helping young people express themselves verbally, not least in terms of improving their job chances. He also said speaking skills were linked to children’s sense of wellbeing. Princess Beatrice said: "We live in a world where everything is moving at such a fast pace. "You have to find an identity that's true to yourself. You really have to find your own voice." u

Ed has been working in property for over 12 years, and has enjoyed working in Battersea and Balham. Now he runs the Balham office and has achieved market leading results. He believes that we should keep our clients interests at the forefront of how we conduct ourselves. ◆
Helen started her career at Jacksons in 2007 and has developed a wealth of knowledge and experience in the industry. When she’s not selling she uses her downtime to socialise with friends and also likes to play the guitar and potter in her garden. ◆
Carlene has worked for Jacksons for nine years. She has worked in Earlsfield, Streatham and now Balham. She grew up in the area and loves being back. The ever-changing high street, shops and eateries makes Balham a great all rounded place to be whatever your age. ◆
Abbe has worked in several of Jacksons local offices which have in turn, given her an extended knowledge of the South West area as a whole. She lives in the area and spends a lot of her spare time enjoying the local amenities, therefore can relate to clients on a personal level. ◆
After the market levelling off between April’s stamp duty changes and June’s EU referendum results, we’ve seen any inflated asking prices come down, with prices levelling off but not dropping further. We’re seeing buyers wanting to get away from high rents and take advantage of affordable lending. We’re currently achieving an average of 98.33% of our asking prices so the signs are still there for a strong market. ◆

REBECCA NOONAN
I
imagine it’s quite rare given the fast-paced, raucous nature of modern London, that you’d come across an agent who has spent their career working in the same borough they grew up in. I was born between the commons in Lambeth Women’s Hospital, which incidentally is now known as the Latitude Building on Clapham Common Southside, where I’ve sold several properties. I spent my younger years at Kings Avenue Primary School, until my family moved to Wales, where I enjoyed the rural lifestyle as a boy, but always knowing I’d be back in the big smoke one day. I developed an interest in politics and economics and graduated from university with a degree in Public Management. By chance, I was recruited into the then-fledgling domestic gas market, and returned to London to work in the client relations division. All those hours helping people over the phone gave me a great foundation in the art of customer service, but I knew that I belonged out in the field, talking to people face-to-face. Having gone straight into working life after graduation,
Clapham has become hugely popular with young professionals and families
after a few years, I longed for a taste of adventure, so embarked on a six-month road trip from London to Cape Town. I still look back fondly at those times as I met some really wonderful people. In fact, it was one such chance encounter that led to me to begin my career in property when I came home. I was lucky enough to be referred for an estate agency role in 2004, and instantly loved the personable and active nature of the job. I then joined Marsh & Parsons to manage their newly opened Clapham office in 2006 almost 10 years to the day - and I began to really thrive once I returned to my home turf in Clapham. Here, with help from my team, we grew the office into one of the highest performing within the company. This success helped me to earn the position of
Regional Director for South, East and North London. I’ve been fortunate to be part of the rapid expansion and change, not just of Marsh & Parsons, but of Clapham as well. When I joined Marsh & Parsons, it had 12 offices, and Clapham was still somewhat of an afterthought for those looking to buy and let property in London. Now we have 27 offices and south west London, especially Clapham, has become hugely popular with young professionals and families. This surge in popularity has brought interest and regeneration to the surrounding areas of Battersea, Brixton and Tooting, where our 25th office opened in February this year. I’m proud to have been a part of this growth, and I think Clapham Old Town will always be my favourite part of the area. The plethora of bars, restaurants and independent businesses that line the common, make it not only a hub for local entrepreneurship and creativity, but also means there’s a family-friendly atmosphere. And I love being able to take my children to some of the same places that I went whilst growing up between the commons! u
