Reading Festival

During the Covid years, I was out of work for a few months and rather than laze around and binge on Netflix, I decided to indulge in a passion of mine and take a personal training course. The human body truly is remarkable. I am not going to lie, it was a struggle to learn about all the muscles the body possesses, but what a thrill to be able to come up with detailed fitness plans and a food diary to back up the effort exerted in the gym. As a result, I have probably never felt as fit as I do now in my 40s. Even though our main features in this month's health special were not written by me, they all have some relevance to either what I have gone through in life or still have an interest in, so I hope you feel the same way too. I always get sick when I go on holiday, but it seems as if I don't start preparing early enough; there's the superfoods you need to be eating right now – and dark chocolate is in there; and if you do need to get away from it all, we have picked out the county's best spas. Hopefully the issue will make you feel a whole lot better.

Music takes centre stage at Windsor Racecourse this month

indsor

WRacecourse will be hosting two very special events across two days from 16-17 August as part of its Summertime Live event. Jools Holland and his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra head to Windsor this month for a special openair performance on 16 August, featuring Gilson Lavis and guest vocalists Ruby Turner, Louise Marshall, Sumudu Jayatilaka and introducing Toby Lee.

Kids can get entry for £1 on all Steaming Days at Buckinghamshire Railway Centre near Aylesbury throughout the summer holidays this year, running until 1 September. On a Steaming Day, there is a full-size steam train in action, ready to take you for a ride up and down the track! They also have miniature ride-on trains, a large Railway Museum, beautiful Visitor Centre with gift shop and cafe, and model trains are usually running too. bucksrailcentre.org

The special, non-race day, event has already seen a huge response from people all over Berkshire, says event organiser Jonathan Ware: “We’ve been hoping to bring Jools to the area to perform for some time and we couldn’t be happier to have him joining our Summertime Live weekend this August. Tickets went on sale last week and the response so far has been huge. Jools’ popularity to people of all ages and music tastes really shows.”

On 17 August you can enjoy three stages of live music and DJs, headlined by the Classic Ibiza orchestra. Expect performances from The Shapeshi ers, Majestic (KISS FM), Lisa Maffia, 24hr Garage Girls, Fabio & Grooverider, Artful Dodger and more.

Event organiser Anthony Ellis, says: "We are so excited to head into our sixth year of Summertime Live Windsor. This event started as a small concert and has grown into an all day event with multiple stages. Myself and my business partner Jonathan were born and raised in the area, so it's great to see an event of this nature growing in Windsor."

FEELING ECLECTIC

The headliners may take centre stage at Reading Festival this month, but dig deeper and it’s clear this is an event that reflects a cross-section of society today

In our summer special last issue, we made a big thing of the headliners at this year’s Reading Festival from 21-25 August, and rightly so. The six named leads are all big draws and are sure to rock the festival: Fred again.., Lana Del Rey, Blink-182, Liam Gallagher, Catfish and the Bottlemen and Gerry Cinnamon are all set to top the bill on the most prestigious main stage of all, and the people behind the festival know they have come up trumps with such a prestigious line-up.

“I am very proud that the biggest artists in the world choose to play Reading and to have three incredible UK festival exclusives – the electrifying Fred again.., a true generational talent Lana Del Ray and the legendary Blink-182,” says Melvin Benn, Managing Director of Festival Republic. “The iconic Liam Gallagher will return to play the all-time classic album Definitely Maybe, which will be a special moment indeed. We pride ourselves on nurturing artists from the early stages in their career, so to see acts like Catfish and the Bottlemen rising

through the festival to headline for the second time is very rewarding. Last year was a hugely successful one for attendance and sensational audience feedback, and we are eager to build upon this success even further at the UK’s biggest and best music festival.”

What has kept Reading Festival (and its sister show in Leeds) ahead of the pack is their ability to pull together an eclectic mix of acts that covers all genres and tastes. Alongside the leads, the organisers announced over 50 new artists for 2024 including Reneé Rapp, Fontaines D.C., Denzel Curry, Pendulum, Neck Deep and Nia Archives. They will also join the previously announced London-born hip-hop star 21 Savage, BRIT nomination record breaker RAYE, pioneering producer Skrillex,

UK R&B icon Jorja Smith, dance music heavyweights The Prodigy, UK drill pioneer Digga D and one of the world’s most hyped young metal acts, Spiritbox.

Reading’s unique soundscape – the beating heart of youth culture –continues its constant evolution with this latest cohort of contemporary artists reshaping music on their own terms. It is an event that never stands still, attracting 240,000 combined visitors a year and standing as the largest UK festivals devoted solely to music.

“It’s thrilling to announce such an incredible range of groundbreaking artists who are shaping the music scene in real time,” adds Melvin. “Reading doesn’t stand still; our audience demands the best and our line-up strives to reflect what people are currently listening to. As the UK’s biggest and best music festival, Reading is a unique and prestigious platform which attracts the world’s biggest artists. We’re proud to always be at the cutting edge and keen eyes may have spotted another evolution for the show, The Chevron.”

The Chevron, an immense 40,000 capacity open-air venue, will feature mammoth staging and the world’s first floating video canopy made up of hundreds of thousands of programmable LED lights, turning the sky above into a dazzling, reactive display. The bespoke structure, exclusive to Reading and Leeds, promises an immersive atmosphere and incredible programming, raising the bar for dance

music and hip-hop fans and artists alike. Positioned in the main arena of both festival sites, The Chevron is a step forward and also signals the return of the singular iconic main stage.

The stage’s construction represents a feat of engineering, as the LEDs will appear to be hovering in the air. The canopy will bathe the audience in dynamic light and the mesh is 90% transparent, so fans can dance under the open sky into the early hours. Featuring the biggest acts, bespoke creative visuals, cutting-edge tech and a world-class sound system, The Chevron is a must-visit festival experience you can’t have anywhere else. It will also be the new home of the world’s biggest silent disco, which last year was headlined by SIGMA in a live simulcast set across both sites.

“The Chevron is more than just a physical stage; it’s a testament to Reading & Leeds’ continued commitment to innovation and industry leadership,” Melvin says. “We demonstrated this previously, with the introduction and success of dual main stages in 2021. This year I saw the opportunity to do something new and truly special, reflecting the audience’s evolving tastes and cutting edge production the show is known for. This elevates our electronic and hip-hop music o erings, while still delivering six main-stage headliners and a strong representation across other genres. I can’t wait for everyone to experience The Chevron this summer.”

That’s not all. Another new stage has

Lightning STRIKES

Grease is waltzing its way into Buckinghamshire this month, so Absolutely catches up with the cast and director to find out what we can expect

It’s the one that theatregoers and movie lovers have wanted since it first opened in the early 1970s. And as the acclaimed Curve production of Grease hits the road for a UK and Ireland tour, director Nikolai Foster promises: “Ithas all the moments you love from the film and the original, but with some extra grit, guts, gravitas and spice!”

Written by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, Grease opened in Chicago in 1971 and played Broadway the following year, where it was nominated for seven Tony awards. It ran for eight years and featured such little-known (at the time at least) performers as Patrick Swayze, John Travolta and Richard Gere. Having understudied several roles on Broadway, Gere got to star as Danny Zuko when the show had its 1973 London premiere at the Dominion Theatre. Then, of course, Travolta played Danny in the 1978 blockbuster film version opposite Olivia Newton-John as Sandy Olsson. The name-change from Sandy Dumbrowski wasn’t the only tweak; Sandy

was now Australian to accommodate NewtonJohn’s accent, the Burger Palace Boys were renamed the T-Birds, some songs were jettisoned, the story was relocated to sunny California and its harder edges were softened. First helmed by Foster in 2016, the Curve production – which has since toured the country and enjoyed sold-out summer seasons at the Dominion – reinstates the names, the location, the toughness and some of the songs, alongside such favourites as Summer Nights, Hopelessly Devoted To You, You’re the One That I Want and the title track. Of the reinstated numbers, the director (whose extensive CV also includes White Christmas, Annie and Beautiful Thing) explains: “They really give us a key to the feeling of the original show and its genesis – the grit, viscera and real life that these working class kids from the South Side of Chicago experienced. I think the new-old songs are a nice surprise. They make you sit up and listen, hearing something that is very familiar as if for the first time.”

The show is choreographed by Dame Arlene Phillips and designed by Colin Richmond, who help add to the realism as a contrast to the movie version. “The film was shot in sunny LA and is very much a candy floss vision of high school life,” Nikolai says. “Our Grease sets the show in its original Chicago location, where it’s much closer to real life and not quite as sunny! Although Arlene’s astonishing choreography certainly has enough energy and verve to ignite a nuclear power reactor.”

It boasts a diverse cast, with Nikolai explaining: “As with all our work at Curve, we want to ensure the work on our stages celebrates and reflects our diverse nation. It’s so important we see aspects of our own identity represented and one of the privileges of working on this productionis that our casting has always celebrated the very best in new talent coming into the theatre.”

Heading the cast for the tour are Marley Fenton as Danny and Hope Dawe as Sandy. They’re thrilled to be playing such iconic characters, with Marley saying: “It’s such an

JOE GASH AND THE CAST

iconic show and such an iconic love story, so for us it’s about paying homage to a classic.”

Hope concurs. “By the end everyone is on their feet for the megamix and they go away humming all those brilliant songs. Everyone loves Grease, don’t they?”

Marley is a graduate of the Arts Educational School who has played The Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz and was in Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends. He sees getting to play Danny as a career landmark. “When I was growing up, I’d always kind of put myself in the position of playing either the black character or the character that is the best friend,” he says. “But when I went through drama school training, I realised ‘Why can’t I be a Danny Zuko? Why can’t I be the lead who has always been seen as a white person when there’s nothing in the story to say that they have to be?’ So this is such a cool moment for me.”

Hope trained at Mountview and Grease marks her professional debut. She sees Sandy as a role model for today’s young theatregoers, pointing out: “Yes, she’s lovely and sweet and she’s in love with Danny. But she’s not naive about the world that she finds herself in, at a new school, with kids that she’s not been around before. She has a backbone and she sticks up for herself.”

They’re both huge fans of Dame Arlene Phillips. Marley smiles at the mention of her name. “Every time she walks into the room, there’s just this presence. She definitely puts us through our paces, but the choreography is amazing.” Hope adds: “She’s very inspiring and she knows so much. She’s wonderful to be around.”

Dame Arlene says of the show: “It’s like seeing the film come to life, only edgier. I love the film but it is a fantasy of what real life in Chicago was like in 1958. The original stage version, on the other hand, was based on a real high school (the William Howard Taft School in Chicago) that Jacobs himself attended and many of the characters were inspired by his fellow pupils. A lot of people don’t know that

this is a real story about real-life people. Only the names have been changed.”

In the story that Jacobs and Casey fashioned, these are blue-collar kids who have low expectations about where life will take them once their school days are over. “Many of them are trying to work out who they are and what the future holds. So they live their lives through dance and through the rockabilly style which is exploding all around them. Like hip-hop kids creating their own moves today, it was very much like that in rockabilly,” says Dame Arlene. Awarded a damehood in 2021 for her services to dance and charity, Dame Arlene has been praised for her work on such shows as Starlight Express, Saturday Night Fever, We Will Rock You and Guys and Dolls. She is a two-time Olivier nominee and was presented with a Special Recognition Olivier award in 2023, along with a WhatsOnStage trophy for the revival of Grease at the Dominion.

Dame Arlene is in awe of the young cast. “They all have to be brilliant and to be triple threats,” she says. “They have to sing and dance and act, and they bring so much energy to it. It feels like a giant party because everyone in the company is so excited to be doing this show.”

Grease will be performed at Milton Keynes Theatre from 5-10 August. Book tickets at ATGTICKETS.COM/MiltonKeynes

A force

for CHANGE

Ten years since last playing in London, legendary physical theatre company Fuerza Bruta is back with euphoric new show Aven

CHANGE

In 1997, a group of young Argentians calling themselves De La Guarda were touring an exhilarating, but almost totally unclassifiable theatre show called Villa Villa throughout North America. Twenty seven years later, company co-founder Diqui James recalls that they were in Montreal when they discovered that they were on the front cover of Time Out London.

“It said 'Catch the LIFT: Probably the Best Theatre in the World',” recalls a proud James, still able to recall the headline almost three decades on. And no wonder: it was the start of a beautiful relationship between him and London. Initially Villa Villa was booked for a short run as part of that year’s London International Festival of Theatre (LIFT). But with the company making magazine covers before they’d ever played a show in the capital, it’s not a surprise that the LIFT shows rapidly sold out. “We were shocked, really,” says James, “it was amazing.”

A cinematic, endlessly inventive explosion of MTV-indebted visuals and performers who spend much of the time either suspended above the audience or cheekily interacting with it, Villa Villa eventually transferred to the huge, iconic Roundhouse, where it ran for an astonishing 11 months, and might have stayed longer had the venue not closed for a major refurb. “This was the old Roundhouse,” says James, “and we fell in love with it.” The feeling was mutual: when it was time for the Roundhouse to reopen, there was only one possibility. “We closed the Roundhouse with De La Guarda, and then several years later we reopened it with Fuerza Bruta,” smiles James. Meaning ‘brute force’, Fuerza Bruta was the name of the James-led successor company to De La Guarda, and also the name of its original show. Reopening the Roundhouse in 2006 and playing a second stint there in 2013,

“We want to go faster than your brain”

Fuerza Bruta was a colossal global success on a scale at least as big as Villa Villa, touring the world and enjoying a walloping seven-year continuous run o -Broadway. Based around a series of even more stunning set pieces – most famously a man ruggedly running through walls, and a transparent-bottomed swimming pool that descends over the audiences heads to within touching distance – Fuerza Bruta is clearly theatre, and yet hard to really compare to anything else. “It’s primitive theatre with very modern tools,” says James when asked if he has a best way of describing it. “So you will see something technically very modern, but the feeling of it is very primitive. We don’t use words, we don’t tell a story. We go to your body: to the feelings, to the senses. We want to go faster than your brain.”

The original show is 18 this year. That is a long time for a company to have a single piece in its repertoire and while the original was heavily tinkered with over the years and remains in circulation as Fuerza Bruta: Wayra, it was always apparent that James and company were going to have to make a brand new show at some point.

So what next? “The happiest show on Earth!” grins James. Indeed, after a phenomenally successful run in their home city of Buenos Aires, they’re currently performing it on tour in Latin America. The second show from Fuerza Bruta is the radically joyous Aven. The idea of “trying to do the happiest thing we can” was not the initial impulse behind a follow-up to Wayra. But when he shared some of his ideas with his son, James was bemused when he described them as ‘too dark’. Taken aback, he accepted it as a challenge, and so Aven was born, a radiant, dance-based spectacle devised by James with music by composer Gaby Kerpel.

The company loves to play the vaulted, spacious Roundhouse: “The size of it, the shape of it, the height of it, it’s beautiful, you know?” He also reckons London crowds are some of the best and least stando sh. “What I feel is that people in London are very confident about theatre. What we do is di erent, so sometimes you go to a city and people need proof, they need somebody else to say ‘this is good’ to them. But in London if they like it, they like it, if they want to shout, they shout.” Get ready: happiness is coming your way.

TIME for TEE

Now Woad has the Curtis Cup in her sights. “I haven’t played in a Curtis Cup before so this would be my first one,” she added. “I feel like team golf’s always really fun.”

Woad spends most of her time in the USA where she is currently at Florida State University. She has enjoyed a host of top-ten finishes in the USA this year and has played in major championships among the professionals, including the US Women’s Open at the end of May.

The USA have won the last three Curtis Cup matches, most recently at Merion Golf Club on home soil in 2022. GB&I last triumphed in 2016 at Dun Laoghare in Ireland as Matthew chases a famous win for the hosts this year.

Local talent Lottie Woad is chasing a Curtis Cup place at Sunningdale. Here’s what it means

One of golf’s leading amateur events is coming to the local area later this summer – and a talented local player is bidding to make the team. The Curtis Cup is the most prestigious team trophy for women amateur golfers and is being staged at Sunningdale Golf Club in Berkshire at the end of August (30 August–1 September).

First held in 1932, the Curtis Cup sees the world’s very best amateur golfers from the United States of America and Great Britain and Ireland come together to contest the trophy. The 43rd staging of the match could see English player and local favourite Lottie Woad compete – currently the world’s number one amateur player –and golf fans in the area are encouraged to go and support the GB&I side.

Since it began, many of the world’s greats have competed in the prestigious match play contest, including two-time winning Solheim Cup captain Catriona Matthew OBE, Dame Laura Davies and AIG Women’s Open Champion Georgia Hall. Scotland’s Matthew is captaining the GB&I team at Sunningdale as she bids to continue her fantastic record in team golf as a skipper.

As the first European winner of the Augusta National Women’s Amateur back in April, Surrey native Woad continues to catch the eye with her golfing exploits. The 20-year-old from Farnham reached the top of the world amateur standings earlier this summer, helped by her success at Augusta.

“It means so much,” she said at the time of her victory at such a famous golfing venue. “I watched this event when I was younger so I always wanted to play in it, try and contend and then to win it was just really special.”

The Curtis Cup will be held at Sunningdale Golf Club between 30 August–1 September. Tickets are priced at £22 for adults, £11 for juniors (16-24), and free for under 15s. You could be there to witness golfing history.

Heart of the matter

Introducing Mila Smith, the Berkshirebased expert who may just have the key to unlocking a long-term loving relationship

Following 25 years in the corporate world, I decided to dedicate my time to the field about which I’m absolutely passionate: helping women and men, as a certified Relationship & Dating Coach, find the love they deserve and discover how to build a happy relationship.

We turn to financial advisors to look after our money, attend parenting courses, hire business, fitness and life coaches; however, often very little or no thought goes into choosing the right life partner despite the criticality of this decision for your future.

Whether you’re a woman or a man, single, divorced, separated, or in the process of extracting yourself from a long-term relationship, my 1:1 coaching sessions will guide you every step of the way, help you avoid the pitfalls and find lasting happiness.

Working with me you can:

• Detach from your emotional baggage and feel excited about love again;

• Learn to identify red flags and incompatible people;

• Improve your self-esteem and bring out the best version of you;

• Discover how to find an ideal partner, nurture a new relationship and much more...

There’s a lot of conflicting advice out there, but I’ve been trained by one of the world’s most trusted relationship experts and use proven science and researchbased methods that work no matter how many times you failed in the past.

Marriage counselling or couples therapy is a specific qualification – I do not work with couples. My motto is: “The best time to work on a relationship is before it begins.” What do I mean by that? When people fall into relationships blindly and end up married or even with children before really getting to know their partner, they often discover they aren’t well suited, and the struggle begins. I like a metaphor with Cinderella’s glass slipper: if it doesn’t fit, it’s practically impossible to make it fit no matter how hard you try.

If you’re planning to run a marathon, what do you do? You arrange training with a qualified coach even though, technically, you’re capable of running. When it comes to dating and relationships, you can enlist the same kind of help.

Love doesn’t come with a manual, but my step-by-step coaching programme will reveal a shortcut to happiness.

Go WILD

From The Hand and Flowers to the Bucks countryside, Amber Francis’s cooking has always turned heads. She tells us about awards, TV and rustling up a feast outdoors

Wild Feasts at Oxmoor Farm, the rural dinner party series set in the Chiltern Hills, will return for the 2024 season.

Located within a renovated barn on a secluded plot of idyllic Buckinghamshire countryside, this year’s Wild Feasts will welcome 10 resident chefs. For Absolutely, one name stands out: Amber Francis, who will cook on 10-11 August.

Following her formative years training at establishments including the Ritz and The Hand and Flowers, Amber was most recently Head Chef at Maene and Robin Gill’s Zebra Riding Club. Amongst her accolades, Amber has been named British Restaurant Awards Best Young Chef of The Year 2022 and competed in the 2023 series of Great British Menu. Amber is now working with a state education secondary school in North London as Head Chef and Senior Food Educator. Absolutely sat down to discuss all this and more.

Q Why were you keen to be involved in Wild Feasts?

A Wild Feasts o ers such a unique opportunity to cook in a truly breathtaking environment, with some of the best produce that the UK has to o er. I love the fact that Wild Feasts leans towards fire-led and communal dining. What better way to spend a weekend than cooking awesome produce with great people, for great people?

Q What do you make of the setting?

A Oxmoor Farm is just the most idyllic place to hold an event like this. I love rural Buckinghamshire and have an a nity to the British countryside having grown up climbing hay bales in Somerset as a child.

Q Do you know what we can expect on 10-11 August?

A My feast at Oxmoor Farm will be a showcase of the best seasonal and local produce on o er. We will be serving beautiful produce from Badger’s Farm alongside Darvill’s Hill Farm and Chiltern Cold Pressed.

Q Do you enjoy cooking where diners can see you creating the food?

A I love cooking at events where diners can see what is happening ‘behind the scenes’. Having that connection with the guest as a chef is something that you never take for granted.

Q Do you think you have a cooking style?

A I definitely cook with the seasons, which I suppose has become my ‘style’. I trained in classical French cookery, but my approach nowadays is far lighter and fresher on the palate. I tend to pick the best produce I can and let that do the talking, using my skills only to enhance and complement what is already there.

Q What kind of ingredients are you championing right now?

A This year I have started growing a lot more in my garden and I am chu ed with our herbs. I think they can be a really underrated ingredient that is used only as an afterthought. But fresh and zesty soft herbs or earthy, rich woody herbs often form a base of dishes when I am creating a menu, especially in my desserts which tends to surprise guests.

Q Were you always interested in cooking?

A I always loved cooking, but I never really saw it as a career until I was fortuitous enough to meet a local chef that had happened to do a stint working in the best restaurants in London. She really kindled my love for cooking and guided my first steps into stages in Michelin starred kitchens from the age of 15.

Q What was your first professional job in a kitchen and how do you look back on that time?

A I worked at The Ritz from the age of 18, but I was doing stages in Michelin starred restaurants such as The Hand and Flowers and Le Manoir aux Quat Saisons from the age of 15. If we are going back that far then I suppose I had also ought to confess to the fact that my very first job in a kitchen was in the local Wetherspoons! You know what, I learnt a lot there, consistency is key, whether you’re a national chain pub or a Michelin starred restaurant.

Q How would you sum up the experience at The Hand and Flowers?

A I adored my stage at The Hand and Flowers,

“The Hand and Flowers has a community feel that you don’t often see”

so much so that I returned the following year to work with the team again. It has a real community feel to the restaurant that you don’t often see and Tom Kerridge remains someone that I look up to in the industry.

Q Have you taken something from all the chefs you have worked with in the past?

A Every chef that I have worked with, whether executive chef or apprentice, has taught me something, even if that is what mistakes not to make! I learnt a huge amount by working under some big names early on in my career, but learnt just as much from managing and training the more junior members of sta in my teams. Everyone has a unique skill set and experiences that they can bring to a restaurant and there is no one way to cook.

Q How did it feel to be named British Restaurant Awards Young Chef of the Year?

A Honestly? It was a bit bewildering! I had no idea that I was actually in the running for the title. Yes, I was on the shortlist, but there were so many other talented chefs on that list that I was just enjoying the experience. Then my name was called and the rest was a bit of a blur!

Q And what was the experience of competing on the Great British Menu like?

A I adored being on the Great British Menu It was one of the hardest competitions that I have done, but I learnt so much about myself and met some incredible people.

Q Why have you turned your focus to education?

A Fine dining and restaurant cooking is still a firm passion of mine and I still regularly attend events such as Wild Feasts and have my own private chef and food consultancy business. However, I wanted to use the skills that I had garnered over the years to work with local communities and better education around food, particularly amongst young people in London. My current role aligns strongly with my moral compass and values.

Q What’s next for you?

A Doing what I do best! Cooking in all sorts of di erent environments, at festivals, pop ups, chef-led events, and continuing to educate the next generation about food and cooking.

Safe JOURNEY

An expert from Natures Corner in Newbury on how you can stay well on your travels

Looking forward to getting away this summer? We all need a break from time to time, but it’s fair to say we may also get a little carried away once we are in the sun and on the beach. The following tips should help to make sure your holiday is memorable for all the right reasons. Bolster your defences. A strong immune system is important at all times, but especially so when we travel. The stu y confines of an airplane cabin are the perfect breeding ground for germs, especially if you’re cooped up for two to three hours at a time. Echinacea purpurea is one of the best immune-supportive herbs there is,

“Aloe vera applied topically can help to soothe dry, reddened or sun-damaged skin”

so make sure this makes it into your hand luggage. A.Vogel Echinacea Lozenges are particularly flightfriendly, but you should ideally start to prime your immune system two to four weeks before you travel. Support your digestive health with a good prebiotic supplement before and when you travel. Molkosan Fruit Drink, for example, can help establish the right environment within which important infection-fighting bacteria can flourish, revitalising your digestive system. Don’t

eat anything that looks undercooked or raw and avoid bu et food that may not have been kept at the right temperature. By far the most common cause of tummy trouble abroad, and diarrhoea especially, is dirty or contaminated water. Only drink bottled or canned drinks and don’t assume the tap water in your hotel is safe to drink. Remember also not to use ice in your drinks. If you do succumb to ‘holiday tum’, drink plenty of water to help prevent dehydration; experts recommend between two and three litres daily, especially if you’re in a hot climate. For diarrhoea, nausea and stomach ache, Silicol gel, a liquid silicic acid supplement, three times daily can help. Children with diarrhoea must consult a healthcare professional and medical advice must always be sought if symptoms do not improve within 24 to 36 hours, or if diarrhoea is accompanied by severe pain, vomiting, fever or loss of blood. If mosquitoes and biting insects are a problem, a good insect repellent on exposed skin should help. In some parts of the world, such as Africa and South America, you’ll need more than a spray repellent, but more often than not, mosquitoes are more of a nuisance than a health hazard. Natural remedies can be e ective. Neem seed extract, for example, is a popular alternative to DEET-containing sprays. The scent of neem masks your individual scent, making you less easy to find.

Have fun in the sun, but do so safely. Always wear a good SPF, avoid sitting in the sun when it’s at its strongest and prepare your skin before you travel. If you do get caught short, aloe vera applied topically can help to soothe dry, reddened or sun-damaged skin. Finally, if you’re feeling a little overtired or jetlagged on arrival, Sleep Well Dissolvable Granules should help you to drift o in your new time zone. Bon voyage!

BLUEBERRIES

Blueberries are often touted as the king of antioxidant foods. These small, flavourful berries are packed with vitamins C and K, fibre, and a high concentration of

The probiotics in Greek yoghurt support a healthy gut microbiome, enhancing digestive health and boosting the immune system. The high protein content helps with muscle repair and growth.

ALMONDS

Almonds are nutrient-rich nuts that provide a good amount of healthy monounsaturated fats, protein, fibre, and important vitamins and minerals like vitamin E, magnesium, and potassium. They support heart

health, aid in weight management, and improve skin health. The high fibre content also helps control blood sugar levels.

SPINACH

Spinach is a versatile leafy green packed with vitamins A, C, and K, as well as iron, magnesium, and antioxidants. It supports eye health, boosts the immune system, and enhances skin health. The high iron content is particularly beneficial for individuals with anaemia.

SWEET POTATOES

Sweet potatoes are rich in beta-carotene, which the body converts into vitamin A, essential for vision and immune function. They are also high in fibre, vitamins C and B6, and potassium. Sweet potatoes have a low glycemic index, which helps regulate blood sugar levels.

DARK CHOCOLATE

Dark chocolate with a high cocoa content (70% or more) is rich in antioxidants, particularly flavonoids, which support heart health by improving blood flow and lowering blood pressure. It also contains minerals like iron, magnesium, and zinc. Moderate consumption can boost mood and brain function.

residents are being urged to step up for the 15th anniversary of the Chilterns 3 Peaks Challenge

Sunday 8 September will see the return of the annual Chiltern 3 Peaks challenge in aid of Rennie Grove Peace Hospice Care, which is back for its 15th year. The challenge – which takes in the breathtaking scenery of the rolling Chiltern Hills – is ideal for walkers, families, and those who love the outdoors, including dogs!

In a nod to the 15th anniversary of the event, participants are being challenged to raise £225 by getting 15 people to sponsor them £15 each. This amount could fund six hours of hospice nursing care in Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire.

The walking event o ers three alternative routes with six-and-a-half, ten and 18-mile options available. All three routes commence at Princes Risborough School. The trail is not circular so at the end of miles six and a

half and 18, buses will take walkers back to the start. For the 10-mile route, the bus will move walkers onto Tring Railway Station to complete the final part of the challenge on foot. Walkers will then get on the bus at the finish line at Ivinghoe Beacon to take them back to Princes Risborough School. All participants will receive an event T-shirt and medal to celebrate their amazing achievement, and walkers who raise £225 or more will receive a free water bottle.

Laura Elliott, Head of Supporter Fundraising at Rennie Grove Peace Hospice Care, says: “The Chilterns 3 Peaks Challenge has become a beloved event in the community. All funds raised by the event are used to provide vital patient care in our community.

“We want to make this year’s event the most successful and memorable yet –allowing us to support even more people across Buckinghamshire,” she adds. “To achieve this, we need the continued support of our local communities. Whether you have a personal connection to the cause or are looking for a physical challenge, this event is perfect for you. Every year, we see people walking with family, friends, colleagues, and even their four-legged companions. So, gather a group, sign up, and be part of an amazing e ort to raise vital funds.”

Tickets are available now and cost £16 for adults over 16, and £10 for children (5-15), with under five-year-olds walking for free. A group ticket is available, priced at £45 for two adults and two children.

Summer

haircare tips: keeping
looking its best in the heat

hair

As the sun blazes and temperatures soar, your hair can feel the impact. UV rays, saltwater, chlorine, and sweat can lead to dry, damaged, and frizzy hair. However, with a thorough haircare routine, you can keep your locks luscious all summer. Here are some essential tips from Headmasters’ Colour Ambassador Sian Couldridge and Creative Ambassador Clare Hansford.

HOLIDAY PREP

If you are new to colour or prefer a natural look, consider keeping your natural root colour, but adding a few ribbons of colour using tissue lights. This technique provides depth and enhances facial features. Sian explains: “The trick to this colour is keeping a very soft tone that is simply a few shades lighter than your natural colour without going too warm. The great thing about this technique is that it grows out very naturally,

although having a refresh of baby lights at 6 weeks will keep it looking fresh.”

For those wanting shine and subtle colour, Headmasters' Completely Gorgeous colour combination service (from £149) o ers the perfect blend of half a head of highlights and a glossing treatment. This technique creates a natural, sun-kissed look that is perfect for the summer months.

HYDRATE

Just as your body needs hydration, so does your hair. During the summer, it’s crucial to keep your hair moisturized to combat dryness and brittleness. Opt for a salon treatment such as the Awapuhi Hydraplex (£38), created with a rich blend of proteins and natural oils. This treatment deeply nourishes your hair, leaving it soft, smooth, and manageable, even in the hottest weather.

FIGHTING FRIZZ

To help fight frizz and humidity on hot summer days, Clare suggests using the award-winning Colour Wow Dream Coat.

Simply spray Dream Coat onto wet hair and blow-dry or towel dry to create a barrier that repels humidity and moisture. For a more permanent solution, Headmasters o ers the Keratin Smoothing Treatment, providing hair with a lustrous shine, preventing frizz, and smoothing hair for weeks.

SHIELDING

Prolonged sun exposure can cause significant damage to your hair. To protect your hair, wear a hat or scarf when you’re outside for extended periods. Additionally, consider using a leave-in conditioner or hair spray with SPF, such as the Kérastase Soleil Crème UV Sublime. This product provides an extra layer of protection against UV damage.

LIMIT HEAT STYLING

Heat-styling tools like blow dryers, straighteners, and curling irons can worsen the damage caused by the summer heat. If you want to smoothen your hair, use a tool that does not cause heat damage, such as the ghd Duet (£379). This innovative tool allows you to create a smooth and sleek ponytail, keeping hair away from your neck and staying cool without the risk of heat damage.

REPAIR AND RECOVER

On your return from holiday, visit Headmasters for a Nioxin microdermabrasion treatment (£28). Acting like a facial for the scalp, this treatment works wonders for maintaining the health and shine of your hair. It penetrates deeply into the hair shaft, providing much-needed moisture and nutrients while gently removing product build up and dead skin cells.

hydration. A nutritious diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains supports overall health and aids the body in coping with weight loss. Regular exercise, more specifically resistance training, can augment the positive lifestyle benefits seen with diet and Mounjaro and counteracts the reduction in muscle mass, which can be seen with this medication.

Weight loss medications: DoctorNow in Beaconsfield on the importance of medical supervision

Weight loss medications have gained significant attention recently, o ering an e ective solution for individuals struggling with obesity. This medication, designed to aid in weight reduction, works by curbing appetite, reducing cravings and promoting a sense of fullness. The benefits of weight loss injections extend beyond just weight loss, encompassing improvements in overall health and quality of life. However, while these medications are generally safe and can be a very e ective tool, as with most prescribed medications, they come with potential side e ects, so it is important to be medically supervised during treatment and to maintain good physical health to maximise its benefits and ensure long-term success. The Doctor Now team have recently been impressed with Mounjaro (tirzepatide)

due to its ability to significantly reduce body weight. This reduction in weight can lead to a lower risk of developing obesityrelated conditions such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases. Furthermore, weight loss can improve mobility, reduce joint pain, and enhance overall physical endurance, making daily activities easier and more enjoyable.

In addition to the physical benefits, weight loss with Mounjaro can have a positive impact on mental health. Many individuals struggling with obesity face issues such as low self-esteem, depression, and anxiety. Achieving weight loss goals can boost confidence, improve mood, and enhance overall mental well-being, contributing to a more positive outlook on life.

Despite these benefits, it is essential to maintain good physical health while using weight loss medications. This involves adopting a balanced diet, engaging in regular physical activity, and ensuring adequate

Hydration is another critical aspect of maintaining good health. Drinking su cient water helps the body function optimally, aids in digestion, and supports metabolic processes. Additionally, staying hydrated can help mitigate some of the side e ects of weight loss medications, such as dry mouth and constipation.

Weight loss medication o ers numerous benefits for individuals struggling with obesity, including significant weight reduction and improved overall health. However, medical supervision, maintaining good physical health through a balanced diet, regular exercise, and adequate hydration is vital to maximise the benefits of the medication and ensure long-term success. By combining with healthy lifestyle choices, individuals can achieve their weight loss goals and enjoy a healthier, more fulfilling life.

IA groundbreaking new facial

t’s Friday morning and I’m at Libbie Wallace’s skin clinic on Harley Street to try the new PRO XN Xanthohumol Recovery Treatment. “Ageing is 20% genetics and 80% epigenetics,” she tells me as I lie back on the bed. In other words, sleep, diet, stress, sun exposure, and what we use on our skin has a huge impact on how we age. Brand new to UK clinics, Polish beauty brand PRO XN is disrupting the industry with a groundbreaking new ingredient. Derived from female hop flowers, superior molecule Xanthohumol is a powerful antioxidant and antiinflammatory. It e ectively targets 90% of common skin conditions, including acne, rosacea, atopic dermatitis, as well as accelerated ageing by targeting inflammageing, the root cause. Libbie starts with a double cleanse using PRO XN’s Recovery Cleansing Oil. It smells amazing and my skin feels super hydrated. Next, she spritzes with The Prime Mist, to prepare the skin for the PHA Solution Peel. The Xanthohumol Recovery Treatment follows and then Libbie wraps up my face for the Bio Cellulose Mask. She puts me under a broad spectrum LED lamp and follows with The Prime Mist, a few drops of Antioxidant Therapy, and a light application of the Sun Barrier. Xanthohumol supercharges collagen production, and post-treatment my skin is plump and glowy. I continue with the products at home and notice a definite improvement in hormonal breakouts and skin elasticity.

Hector Ross, of The Signet Collection, on why the luxury designers have moved into private residences and the slice of country life you can now own in Berkshire

Hector and Samantha Ross are connoisseurs in creating homefrom-home luxury in prime UK locations, having established The Signet Collection four years ago – a stand out group of hotels and experiences, breathing new life into time honoured properties in Hampton Court (The Mitre), Newbury (The Retreat at Elcot Park) and Rutland (The Barnsdale).

This expertise now extends to private residences, with the opportunity to purchase your own slice of countryside living in Berkshire, all within access to The Retreat at Elcot Park’s award-winning facilities. The new ‘Residences’ marks a growing trend towards parttime countryside living, with many people who live and work in the city also seeking an accessible rural escape.

Nestled within the picturesque landscapes of West Berkshire, The Residences at The Retreat at Elcot Park redefine the concept of countryside living, o ering an exquisite blend of sanctuary and sophistication. The nine newly redeveloped maisonettes provide an unparalleled opportunity for individuals seeking a private country escape within the idyllic surroundings of the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Beauty. Each two-bedroom maisonette is meticulously crafted to meet the exacting standards of its inhabitants. From high-specification kitchens to spacious living areas, every detail is designed to evoke a sense of comfort and elegance, working alongside interior designer Charlotte Atkins to create a home-from-home.

But the allure of The Residences extends beyond the confines of its walls. Situated within the sprawling grounds of The Retreat at Elcot Park, residents have access to an array of luxurious amenities, including a spa, gym, outdoor infinity pool, tennis courts, and yoga and Pilates classes. The estate also boasts two restaurants, a hair and nail salon, wine cellar, and café, ensuring that every need is catered to with utmost care and attention.

“The Residences at The Retreat perfectly balance the tranquillity of countryside living with the luxury of a full-service boutique hotel,” says Hector Ross, Managing Partner for The Signet Collection. “We are proud to o er residents a unique opportunity to create their own private escape while benefiting from the exceptional amenities and services available at The Retreat.” Absolutely chatted to Hector to find out a little more about the Residences, but also the future plans for The Signet Collection.

Q Before The Signet Collection, what was your background in the design world?

A Before The Signet Collection, my background was primarily in hospitality and business management rather than design specifically. I gained experience working with luxury hotel brands and saw an opportunity to create something unique in the boutique hotel space.

Q What inspired you to set up The Signet Collection?

A The inspiration to set up The Signet Collection came from a desire to create exceptional, characterful hotels that o er a home-away-from-home experience for guests. We wanted to breathe new life into historic properties while maintaining their unique charm.

Q From day one, what did you want to o er?

A From day one, we wanted to o er a highly personalised, luxurious experience that felt warm and inviting rather than stu y or pretentious. Our goal was to create spaces where guests could truly relax and feel at home.

Q What projects really stand out for you – and why?

A Our founding property, The Mitre Hotel in Hampton Court, stands out as a particularly special project. Transforming this historic property into a vibrant, stylish hotel while respecting its heritage was a rewarding challenge.

Q Do you think there is a typical design style to The Signet Collection?

A Each property is unique – we aim for a blend of classic and contemporary elements, with an emphasis on comfort, quality, and subtle luxury in keeping with its heritage and setting.

Q Are The Residences at The Retreat at Elcot Park the first time the business has worked in private residences?

A No, we launched our lodges at The Barnsdale last year – with an opportunity to own your own rural lodge in Rutland, alongside access to the hotel’s facilities. The Residences at The Retreat at Elcot Park mark our second venture into private residences. We were keen to expand into this area to o er our guests a more permanent way to experience The Signet Collection lifestyle.

Q Who are The Residences for?

A The Residences are designed for those who appreciate the finer things in life and want a countryside retreat they can call their own. By investing in The Residences at The Retreat, all owners will be able to enjoy the best of both worlds –the tranquillity of home and the luxurious amenities of a full-service boutique hotel, with access to an array of luxurious amenities, including a spa, gym, outdoor infinity pool, tennis court, two restaurants, a hair and nail salon, wine cellar, and café.

Q How have you worked with Charlotte Atkins?

A We’ve worked closely with Charlotte on the interior design of The Residences. Her expertise in creating elegant, comfortable spaces aligns perfectly with our vision. From high-specification kitchens to spacious living areas, every detail is designed to evoke a sense of comfort and elegance.

Q Can you summarise what we would find in The Residences?

A Each two-bedroom maisonette is meticulously crafted to meet the exacting standards of its inhabitants, o ering a bespoke living experience tailored to their preferences – you’ll find spacious living areas, high-end finishes, and bespoke furnishings. Each residence is designed to o er the comfort and style of a luxury hotel suite combined with the privacy and amenities of a home.

Q What comes next for you?

A Looking ahead, we’re opening our second Signet Spa at The Barnsdale in Rutland, with our fourth property opening in Sussex by the end of the year. We are excited to continue growing The Signet Collection, always seeking out unique properties and opportunities to create exceptional experiences for our guests and residents.

Zoom room

Working from home requires its own approach to decoration. Here’s how to create an impressive backdrop

F“Sometimes I’ll write at the kitchen counter, other times, I crave sitting softer on a sofa”

or all the talk of home o ces, the reality is that the average house size in the UK is 729 sq ft. That will generally translate to three or four smallish rooms – so even before the shift in working habits, a certain degree of multi-use was necessary for most. While homes are generally far roomier across the States (at a staggering average of 2,273 sq ft), this belies the realities in many of its cities (New York City stands at 983 sq ft, Washington DC at 932 sq ft). If you live in or close to a metropolis and you have a family in an average-sized home, your workspace is likely to double up as a social space. But while you may not have the option of an optimally

balanced ergonomic chair or sound-proofing, that doesn’t mean that you can’t present a professional environment that helps you get into the zone when it comes to remote working.

The key principles for any good working space from a décor perspective are a) the best light possible, b) finding a low tra c zone – areas that don’t serve as thoroughfares through the rooms, and c) creating a backdrop that conveys your taste in a way that isn’t visually jarring or distracting.

The shift to remote working has brought countless benefits and for many of us it couldn’t have come sooner. The removal of the commute, the additional flexibility to manage caring commitments… the peace and quiet to form a sentence away from watercooler reviews

of last night’s Love Island. But we cannot deny that hybrid working arrangements have ratcheted up the pressure on our homescapes.

Whether it’s having to listen to a flatmate or partner’s calls or find privacy away from the Peppa Pig theme tune, finding a place where you can concentrate e ectively is vital to the new world working order. Instead of one fixed spot, I’m personally a home workspace hopper. Sometimes I’ll write at the kitchen counter, other times, I crave sitting softer on a sofa. My ‘desks’ aren’t all photogenic or set up with the perfect 90-degree elbow angle, but I’d wager that the majority of people reading this are similar and actually enjoy that flexibility.

But the one work environment setting that I am resolutely consistent about is where I take

my video calls, simply because it matters. You may have seen the homescreen critique accounts on Twitter and Instagram or the ‘You Are Your Backdrop’ memes circulating. While this may seem a little extreme, early research has proven the importance of the image you project of your home in a career context. A recent survey of 1,500 respondents showed that candidates on a job interview conducted via video calls were judged harshly for background clutter, whereas the presence of plants and an organised bookshelf in the background persuaded those surveyed of a candidate’s reliability and professionalism. Your background has the potential to reveal a lot about your personality without you even realising it and that can have a big impact on professional perception. While it may be tempting to use the fake digital backgrounds, available for instant download, or even blur your hinterland, I would advise explicitly against it – they look creepy and just make you wonder what the hell is hiding back there. Far better to see it as an opportunity, rather than something to circumnavigate. As a freelancer, I have to make a good first impression several times a day. That good impression will simply

not be made from the bed or with the dirty dishes piled up in the sink behind me. Your background has the power to humanise you, adding another layer to your story. You should think of it as a visual complement to your CV and, for that reason alone, it pays to invest time and resources into getting it right.

Starting with the basics, as mentioned above, one of the most important considerations is lighting. The very best lighting comes from the direction of your computer, so ideally you will sit for a video call facing a light source – if not a window, then the area of the room with best indirect natural light. If you only have the option of a windowless space, consider investing in a ring light. Keep in mind that if you sit between a light source and your screen, you will find yourself eerily backlit and your colleagues may not be able to see your features. The whole point of video calling is to see your expressions and get as close to real face time as possible, so always do your best to present a clear image of yourself. The intensity of light is something that décor can help with in the form of window dressings – ideal if you are looking to soften a blazing attic skylight, where home o ces are often located. Harsh

lighting can be just as tricky as low light. When creating a backdrop, consider what values you want your colleagues to take from your home space. Would you like to be perceived as hardworking? Au fait with contemporary art? Personable and approachable? Consider the objects that will fill your screen as props to convey those messages. One of the best ways to showcase those props is with shelving. Colour and pattern can bring further interest to your Zoom room, and both paint and wallpaper are great options – though less is more. For renters, removable, temporary wallpaper is a great option as it will cover all manner of sins. If you’re nervous, start small and go with an easy scalloped shelf, which you can decorate with some personal (though not provocative!) objects. I’m often asked where I get all my bits for shelves and cabinets and there isn’t an easy answer because I get them from everywhere. I never stop looking for beautiful objects, in charity shops, at markets, at airports abroad, on the high street. It’s about pieces that you are personally drawn to, not what is fashionable. I love collections of similar items, though it’s probably best to keep the theme to yourself or you might find you only receive dog mugs for every Christmas ad infinitum. Stripy ceramics are a good example of something that it is easy to purchase and look so cool together. Shapes hewn in di erent shades of marble, interesting candlesticks in pastel tones. Whatever you choose, keep your eye out wherever you go. Eclectic, personal mixtures of print, colour and texture, with pieces you’ve handpicked to create collections of objects that tell your unique story.

Consider the objects that will fill your screen as props

GET OFF OIL

Three reasons to swap your oil boiler for a heat pump from the experts at Good Energy

Over 850,000 homes across the UKhave oil central heating. But with 78% of oil-heated households* having been let down by their heating in the past five years, people are looking into alternatives that are greener, more cost e ective and more reliable. In fact, the majority of people in oil-heated households would consider switching to a heat pump. Here are three reasons why you should do just that:

1

HEAT PUMPS ARE GREENER THAN OIL BOILERS

Heating an average home using oil results in carbon emissions of5,200kga year. That’s more than two return flights from London to New York. On top of the carbon emissions from the boiler itself, heating oil comes with the added environmental impact of being delivered by truck.

In comparison, if you replaced your oil boiler with a heat pump running on grid electricity, it would generatejust 850kgof carbon emissions a year – a huge 83% reduction. This goes down further if you power your heat pump with solar panels or a 100% renewable electricity tari .

2 HEAT PUMPS ARE CHEAPER TO RUN THAN AGEING OIL BOILERS

Oil prices are volatile, influenced by external factors including weather, supply and demand and conflict. In 2023 prices ranged from£0.57/litre in June to £0.82/litre in December, leaving households with large bills if they ran out while the price was high.

Heat pumps are powered by electricity. The heat pumps Good Energy install have an average e ciency of 340%, meaning that for every one unit of electricity they use, they provide 3.4 units of heat for your home.

This means that they are much cheaper to run than ageing oil boilers (£275 a year cheaper for an average 3 bed home, based on oil costing 70p/litre**).

With Government grants of £7,500 available to help with the upfront cost, heat pumps are cheaper to install than many people think too.

3

HEAT PUMPS ARE MORE RELIABLE THAN OIL BOILERS

In a survey commissioned by Good Energy, 58% of people polled had been let down by their heating in the past five years. This figure rose to 78% for households with oil-fired heating*.

Heat pumps are highly reliable and require little maintenance outside of the annual service. Good Energy’s come with a 10-year manufacturer warranty and a 2-year workmanship warranty, giving you peace of mind for many years to come. With a typical lifespan of 15-20 years, heat pumps last longer than oil boilers too.

It’s not just the local area that they deliver to, their vans have been as far north as Warwick Castle and as far south as the Isle of Wight. So next time you are driving or walking around town keep an eye out for one of their red vans, or better still pop into one of their showrooms and be amazed at the new technology making machines up to 80% more energy e cient than your old machine – a new machine could pay for themselves in just a few short years.

Future PROOF

Downe House School hosted a conference in Berkshire that included thought-provoking speeches from Amanda Spielman and Lisa Kerr

Local independent boarding school for girls, Downe House, welcomed almost 200 school leaders and teachers from across the country to its annual Academic Conference on Maximising Pupil Potential, hosted at its campus near Newbury in Berkshire recently. Tackling a variety of issues from the impending threat of VAT on private school fees, to the risks around AI plagiarism, and whether GCSE exams are fit for purpose today, the conference was designed to stimulate

debate and discussion. A highlight in the country’s educational calendar, the audience, made up of both state and independent schools, heard keynote speeches from former longest serving Chief Inspector of Ofsted, Amanda Spielman, as well as Principal of Gordonstoun, Lisa Kerr, and Jane Boardman OBE, former CEO at M&C Saatchi Talk. Amanda shared her thoughts and insights with the delegates, citing Little House on the Prairie and its ‘make-do and mend’ approach to highlight what she believes children are missing out on today. She said: “One of the charms of

“AI HAS THE POTENTIAL TO REMOVE CHILDREN'S NATURAL THIRST FOR KNOWLEDGE”

Laura Ingalls Wilder’s childhood world (as depicted in Little House on the Prairie) is that a child could comprehend so much of what was around them and at an early age, that they could start to learn many of the skills they needed for that life.”

Touching on topical debates such as the use of AI in education and the changing world, Amanda added: “AI has the potential to remove children’s natural thirst for knowledge.” She also highlighted that humanity needs the all-important skills of knowledge and analysis, and that with AI and the internet, the challenge has long existed around preventing children from taking shortcuts. Although Amanda agreed that more education around the use of AI in school is needed, she also suggested that schools will need to revert to more supervision to avoid young people taking shortcuts and to protect them from the exponential changes happening around us as a society.

“I remember reading I Robot, by Isaac Asimov,” Amanda recalled during her speech. “I think that perhaps more young people should read this and take inspiration from it.” An advocate of iteration and evolution in education, she added that there

will of course be many positive impacts to the use of AI in education and that young people will all need a good foundation in maths up to 18 years, to ensure they thrive in a future driven by technology.

Current Principal at Gordonstoun, Lisa Kerr, also addressed the delegates, sharing her own personal journey of entering the world of education. She spoke fondly of her younger student days as a jazz singer and how she landed her first job in radio before launching a business and later securing her first role at a school. She highlighted the importance of transferable skills in education and how her school has sta with skills across a variety of sectors. Kerr told the conference delegates that every child at Gordonstoun is valued because of their di erences and that schools need

“THIS IS PART OF OUR STRATEGY OF OUTWARD LOOKING DEBATE”

to look beyond the traditional sphere of teaching when recruiting if they are to provide the right support in the future.

Jane Boardman talked candidly about young people, careers and job interviews from a corporate perspective. She spoke about the selection process for candidates and noticing an obvious shift towards acceptance of di erence and generosity of spirit. She said that nurturing character development in children is vital as attitudes and approaches to working life are di erent today and that kindness and curiosity are important traits to have.

Following the keynote speeches, Lisa Kerr and Jane Boardman took questions from the audience. Among the topics raised by Heads attending the conference was the impending threat of VAT being imposed on independent schools under new Labour plans. Lisa suggested that the plans were “short-sighted” and required a much deeper investigation into the impact and consequences of such a significant change on society. She also spoke about how independent schools positively contribute to society as a whole as well as to their local

communities and to the millions of children who don’t attend private school.

Matthew Godfrey, Deputy Head at Downe House School and organiser of the conference, said: “Once again, it was a great pleasure to have so many inspiring educational leaders from both state and independent schools in one room together.

Hosting these annual conferences is part of our strategy to be at the forefront of outward looking educational debate and discussion and it was fascinating to share experiences and expertise with like-minded educationalists. We are already planning themes for our 2025 conference next June”.

With an impressive line-up of top guest presenters, the day also included breakout sessions with top speakers including Head of Bedales School, Will Goldsmith, who debated whether our public exams for 16-year-olds are fit for purpose. Digital Education Specialist, Daisy Christodoulou, discussed the future of education amidst the AI hype, while best-selling author, Chloe Combi, tackled the topic of understanding the mindset of Gen Z and Gen A downehouse.net

COLLEGE BENEFITS

James Barton, MPW Group Global Director, on the benefits for students of heading on to a sixth form college for education and inspiration

Education is not a one-size fi ts all business, and in the post-GCSE landscape, sixth form becomes a real chance to reinvent yourself. To some this seems daunting, while to others it is an opportunity. It can be di cult for anyone to know what to expect from the whole sixth form experience. That is what causes even the most confi dent to stumble a little at the outset. Is the day structured very di erently? What will the timetable look like? Will you feel like the new boy or girl again or will you be joined by others going through the same process?

And this is where colleges fit into the picture. Born out of the universitytutorial mould over 50 years ago, they have established enough of a foothold to suggest their relevance is beyond question. Sixth form colleges still require an element of myth busting. The stigma that they are only ‘crammers’ or for those who have been removed from mainstream schools is frankly nonsense today.

Sixth form colleges have morphed, diversified, grown and built and are, for many students, a number-one choice. This is because of the variety and diversity they can o er within a more flexible environment. With over 40 di erent A-level options – and some with Foundation courses now too – colleges are geared up for those who know what they want to do in the future. In this

“Students are now at the business end of their school career and they should use the two years of sixth form to work out what they want to do next”

environment they can focus on it. One issue for some students is whether college will be too big a jump? In fact, they are not as far removed from a school as one might expect. We need to explain the word ‘independence’, a red herring in marketing literature. Independence does not mean students are on their own, but rather that they are being taught to cope with what comes next. This ranges from ‘guided’ independent working to accommodation that o ers increasing levels of independence. The ultimate aim of sixth form colleges today is to bridge a gap between school and university, and they have become very successful at it. How? By recognising that what is required extends beyond the classroom – life education is just as important. Regardless of where they choose to go, students are now at the ‘business end’ of their school career and they should use the two years of sixth form to work out what they want to do next. They should expect more focus on careers and university courses, a sensible discussion on gap years (now they are old enough to understand the merits of one), university visits and

CV awareness. They should make good use of their university counsellors and, if they are going for specific programmes or universities (Dentistry, Medicine, Oxbridge), make full use of the specialist guidance o ered. They are at the stage where an element of proactivity is not only expected, but it should also feel natural. A new environment for sixth form can often be the best source of inspiration for the next step. What should you expect as a student? A more adult learning experience. What should your chosen college expect from you? A more adult student.

The experience you have in this college environment will be defined

Hedsor House

The Buckinghamshire venue continues its transformation into a modern country home with the unveiling of new bedrooms

Hedsor House, the awardwinning, quintessentially English venue in Buckinghamshire, is now showcasing the completion of its latest interiors project, part of the decade-long masterplan to enhance and elevate all spaces within the house. The Shephard family, who transformed the house into a unique venue ten years ago, have joined forces with acclaimed interior designers, Russell Sage Studio, to create a comprehensive refurbishment of ten of its luxury guest bedrooms, setting new industry standards at the same time.

The vital starting point for the guest bedroom refurbishment was the narrative of Hedsor House itself, a spectacular Georgian estate with a history dating back to the 12th century. Given as a wedding present to Florence and Philip Shephard in 1934, Hedsor House has remained in the Shephard family for four generations. Today, it is managed by Mark, supported by parents Alexander and Janey and brothers Nick and Hamish.

Russell Sage Studio is renowned for their remarkable and distinctive designs with a reputation for creating unique interior stories, such as those at The Goring and Fife Arms.

Each of the ten rooms now has a delightfully distinct identity, both in name and design scheme, and all showcase the very best in comfortable, characterful, lively luxury. Guests can immerse themselves in interior design schemes that feature balanced, vibrant colour palettes, art that tells the story of each room, intricate hand-painted details and furniture that has been curated to perfectly suit Hedsor’s beautiful modern-luxury aesthetic.

The themes of history, travel and enduring love unite the rooms and suites’ styles. Three are named after the honeymoon destinations of the Shephard brothers: the Capri Suite

takes inspiration from the vibrant hues of the Mediterranean island; the Skye Suite’s faux fur, clever use of wood and Morris & Co. wallpaper reflect elements of the rustic Scottish isle, while the Mont Rochelles Suite, inspired by a South African hotel, features the golden hues of sunsets on safari, rattan furnishings and charming animal-motif wallpaper.

Russell Sage Studio has also added elements of surprise and delight into the Lilliput Suite and Hornby rooms, weaving family stories into the narratives. Lilliput’s design was inspired by a story told by Granny Florence who created a hideaway miniature house on the estate, and Hornby’s by the model railway in Alexander Shephard’s childhood bedroom.
