LETTER ABSOLUTELY’S January issue highlights

5 H appy new year! January may be a gloomy month in many ways but it's laced with so much optimism. A fresh start, a new beginning, a chance to take stock and rethink. New Year's resolutions in my house this year include teenagers resolving not to leave towels on the floor, not to lose their zipcards and not to charge their Ubers to my account... at least those are some of my resolutions for them. That's if you can you make new year's resolutions for other people, which I suspect you can't. Resolutions for myself aren't entirely dissimilar: I plan to put my clothes away nicely every evening, not lose my bank cards and, since this is our health and beauty special, I suppose I will be aiming to live healthier in every way. Here's to 2025.

T

he stand-out sculpture exhibition at Alon Zakaim Fine Art is a must-see this month. Carved & Cast: Sculpture Through the Ages brings together a museum-quality selection of privately owned sculptures, spanning over two millennia. Featuring more than 15 artists, highlights include a magnificent hand-carved marble statue by Auguste Rodin, and a seminal unique granite by Jacques Lipchitz that was exhibited in the inaugural Guggenheim Museum show in New York. Two bronze sculptures by Edgar Degas, best known for his portrayals of ballet dancers, are a testament to his lifelong fascination with movement and the human form. From masterpieces of the ancient world including a c. 3rd-1st century BC limestone mask and Roman bronze lion head dating to c. 1st-2nd century AD, to contemporary works by Damien Hirst and Emily Young, the show provides an extraordinary glimpse into how sculptors have engaged with the human form and condition throughout history. A selection of smaller sculptures by Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, and Man Ray are paired together for their intricate detailing and delicate handling of forms. Across two floors, the exhibition, curated by Virginia Damtsa, highlights the divergent attitudes and approaches towards sculptural practice, and is a compelling survey of how some of the greatest masters of the last two centuries have shaped and redefined the medium.

The classic novel comes to the Olivier in a stylish and joyful production

T

his production of Noel Streatfield’s classic 1936 novel is joyous and beautifully staged. With a strong message about following your dreams, the story that has charmed several generations of children has been tweaked, slightly, for a modern audience and never feels old-fashioned. Pauline, Petrova and Posy Fossil are three adopted sisters who were each abandoned by their real parents and taken in (through dramatic circumstances including shipwreck, abseiling accidents and amputation) by Great Uncle Matthew (known as Gum), an elderly palaeontologist who lives with his vast collection of fossils in a rambling house at 999 Cromwell Road. There they are left safely in the care of Nana and Gum's stepdaughter Sylvia – until Gum fails to return from one of his travels and the household is plunged into genteel poverty. First, they take in lodgers. letting rooms to a lesbian doctor of literature and an Indian mechanic. And

the girls will need to earn money, but how? A series of fortuitous encounters with lodgers and a dancer lead to them enrolling in dance school and discovering their individual talents: Pauline for acting, Petrova for mechanics and Posy for dance. Costumes are a delight: Sylvia in her blouse and dungarees, Russian dance tutor Madame Fidolia swathed in furs and the dancers in colourful and fantasy-led creations. The Cromwell Road house towers on stage with countless corridors and doors and shelves full of specimen jars, an impressive structure. It's a moving story, illustrating the importance of following your dreams and also of family, with these unrelated sisters forming a close bond in a tale that's optimistic and life-affirming. The three young leads are great together: Yanexi Enriquez as Petrova, Daisy Sequerra as Posy and Grace Saif as Pauline. Justin Salinger is charasmatic as Gum and as the colourful Madame Fidolia, and Katy Rudd's direction makes this a stylish production with wide appeal. B

rasil! Brasil! The Birth of Modernism, a major new exhibition at the Royal Academy features works from the 1910s to the 1970s by ten important Brazilian artists, capturing the diversity of Brazilian art at this time. In early 20th century Brazil, artists were adapting contemporary trends, international influences and artistic traditions to create a new modern art; art informed by and celebrating its distinct, vibrant cultures,

identities and landscapes. The majority of works come from rarely seen Brazilian private collections and are shown alongside those drawn from Brazilian public collections, most of which have never been exhibited in the UK. Ten featured artists include pioneers of early Brazilian Modernism, a movement spearheaded by Anita Malfatti followed by Vicente do Rego Monteiro, the Jewish Lithuanian emigré Lasar Segall, Candido Portinari and Tarsila do Amaral, now internationally celebrated as a leading female figure of Brazilian Modernism. The exhibition

“A JOURNEY THROUGH 70 YEARS OF A NEW ART IN BRAZIL” also includes self-taught artists Alfredo Volpi and Djanira da Motta e Silva, an artist of indigenous descent, Afro-Brazilian artist Ruben Valentim, the early Neo-Concrete polymath Geraldo de Barros, and the artist and architect Flávio de Carvalho, who was also one of Brazil’s first performance artists. Collectively the works take the visitor on a journey through 70 years of a new art in Brazil which moves from figuration to abstraction. A section is dedicated to the historic Exhibition of Modern Brazilian Paintings, which took place at the Royal Academy in 1944, the first exhibition of modern Brazilian art in the UK. Initiated by the Brazilian Government and supported by the Foreign Office, 168 works by 70 artists were donated and exhibited to raise funds for the war effort, specifically the RAF Benevolent Fund. The exhibition includes three works by Roberto Burle Marx which were originally shown in the same galleries 80 years ago in a section that celebrates that gesture of solidarity by Brazilian artists. Brazil was seen as a land of opportunity and sanctuary with its vast territory and huge natural resources. Alongside a multiplicity of Indigenous cultural groups were descendants of the original Portuguese colonisers and of enslaved West Africans (slavery was only abolished in 1888), as well as a wide variety of immigrants, not only from Europe but

28

significant populations of Japanese, Syrians, Italians and Germans among many others. Urbanisation led to the expansion of cities such as Rio de Janeiro (the capital until 1960 when Brasília was inaugurated) and São Paulo; with immigration came new political, social, economic and artistic ideas. Brazilians were no longer interested in following Europe and North America, not just in terms of literature, poetry, theatre, music and design but also, significantly, in art. Brazil was seeking its own identity, one that was freed from external influences and that reflected the reality of life in Brazil. Artists

began to emerge in the 1910s wanting to be modern, reflecting new forms of expression that many had been exposed to in Europe (mainly in France between the wars) and in the US. These artists returned to Brazil reflecting these modern tendencies but adapting them to create new forms of art that celebrated their national identity. Brasil! Brasil! The Birth of Modernism represents the diverse nature of such a multi-cultural society and vividly illustrates this century of cultural change in Brazil. 28 January – 21 April 2025 royalacademy.org.uk

The magician's TABLE Expect to be amazed at this immersive magic show in Bermondsey

e are gathered in a warehouse in Bermondsey for a memorial. The deceased was renowned showman and magician Dieter Roterberg, who had left instructions for his widow, Calliope, to celebrate his life with a night of magic. We, the guests, are seated around several tables among Dieter's friends and colleagues. "Did you know Dieter in his circus days?" someone asks me, and I nod. Calliope makes a speech explaining that Dieter's final wishes were for us all to come together and perform a trick that he had prepared. Someone is summoned to the stage and they are given an envelope to hold, for later. And then the show begins. Over the course of two hours, a series of magicians appears at our table, wowing us with what really, on reflection, has to be magic – because there's just no other explanation. Each magician shows us a completely different type of trick, close enough for us to see up their sleeves and inside their closed hands – we inspect small wooden boxes, drink cans and wallets and they all

seem unremarkable until they absolutely aren't. How did the card on which I wrote my name with Sharpie and returned to the pack later appear inside a locked wooden box which had been sitting in plain sight all along? And how did an empty drink can suddenly become full? And how did a card appear inside a picture that I took on my actual phone and which wasn't there at the time?? All of these questions leave us baffled. And we won't leave any spoilers for Dieter's final trick... don't miss this show. Until February; magicianstablelive.com A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

Dubbed “the godson of Andy Warhol” by Andre Leon Talley, Colbert’s work captivates with a bold mix of pop culture references tied to geopolitics and current events. His visual style

is hyper-pop, with the lobster—central to Colbert’s themes and stories—confronting the dangers and complexities of the modern world amidst the barrage of mass and social media. At the heart of the show are two monumental AI-assisted paintings, with Colbert’s lobster taking on the tech world in epic face-offs. While AI experts caution that we are unknowingly heading toward a dangerous future, Colbert’s perspective takes a more subtle approach to the impact of AI, creating a world where art history and

digital innovation are in constant flux. Instead of sounding an alarm, Colbert engages with the conversation around AI and art, highlighting how our definition of art has evolved. As AI-generated art challenges traditional norms in the art world, Colbert’s works explore the ongoing tension between history and technological progress. He underscores this monumental theme by revisiting a 2,000-yearold masterpiece from Pompeii. In his new piece, After Battle of Issus Mosaic, he has reimagined the iconic “Alexander the Great” mosaic, which A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

is currently housed at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli, where Colbert also showcased his work earlier this year. The artist reimagines the composition, relocating it to his dystopian Lobsteropolis—a realm that evokes both nostalgia and unease. The clash between Colbert’s lobster and a rising army of AI avatars challenges viewers to reconsider the enduring influence of art history as it confronts the digital age directly. The exhibition also features a series of sculptures that powerfully convey the intensity of the battle scene, inspired by classical mythological figures such as the Centaur, Minotaur, and Medusa. Colbert’s unique reinterpretations of these iconic characters emphasise the timeless relevance of mythology and its lasting impact in the contemporary world. Colbert has been sketching lobsters as symbols of surrealism for as long as he can remember. Even before he began his artistic

career, he crafted a suit adorned with the pattern of his now-iconic crustacean. From that moment on, people began referring to him as the Lobster Man. Driven by his love for pop art and surrealism, Colbert fully embraced this artistic identity, saying, “I became an artist when I became a lobster.” Exhibition runs until 13 January 2025 at Saatchi Gallery saatchigallery.com philipcolbert.com LOBSTAR OCTOPUS

MYSTERY TRAIN Suspensful thriller The Girl on the Train comes to Richmond Theatre

R

achel Watson longs for a different life. Her only escape is the perfect couple she watches through the train window every day, happy and in love. Or so it appears. When Rachel learns that the woman she’s been secretly watching has suddenly disappeared, she finds herself as a witness and even a suspect in a thrilling mystery in which she will face bigger revelations than she could ever have anticipated. The international phenomenon - which has sold over 20 million copies worldwide and inspired the Dreamworks film starring Emily Blunt - enjoyed a box-office record-breaking theatrical tour in 2019 and, following its 2025

Richmond dates, will then tour the UK. Actor, writer, broadcaster, and 2020 I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! winner Giovanna Fletcher is set to star as Rachel Watson at Richmond Theatre. Giovanna says of her casting in the role: “I am delighted to be leading the company of The Girl on the Train as Rachel Watson at venues across the UK next year. Paula Hawkin’s psychological thriller has gripped millions of readers worldwide with its Hitchcockian tale of suspense and mystery. What better place than the theatre to take us through its voyeuristic window and deep into Rachel’s story?” The Girl On The Train is at Richmond Theatre from Tuesday 14 to Saturday 18 January; Atgtickets.com/richmond A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

Wine recommendations for the month By THE WINE SOCIETY

The Society's Argentine Malbec 2023  £9.50 This is the ideal introduction to Argentine malbec. It has a forthcoming floral aroma with some black-fruit character and a fresh, round and balanced palate. It's mainly from the Valle de Uco for aroma and intensity of flavour with some Agrelo fruit for richness.

Undurraga Candelabro Chardonnay Leyda Valley 2023  £8.95 Chilean chardonnay with a fresh appley aroma and flavour from the cool Leyda Valley. This has been tank fermented and aged briefly on its yeast lees to confer some richness on the palate.

A Fistful of Schist Chenin Blanc, Swartland 2024  £7.25 Taken from old chenin vines in the heart of the Swartland this is an impressively complex South African chenin for the price, with crisp stone-fruit and tropical notes and a smooth mouthfeel with a crisp, fresh finish. Since it was founded back in 1874, The Wine Society has dared to do business a little differently. Bringing together a community united by a shared love of wine, The Society is a co-operative and owned by its members. FOOD A comfort menu of favourites

B y PENDLE HARTE

ketch has just celebrated its 21st birthday, a coming of age in Counduit Street that perhaps wouldn’t have been predicted when it first opened in 2003. Who would have thought that the sprawling townhouse that used to pride itself in changing its decor every week would grow up? But now this serious eaterie is one of just a handful of London restaurants to hold three Michelin stars. And, of course, it’s home to the West End’s (and possibly Instagram’s) most

DECOR famous loos, which are worth a visit for their spaceship surrealism alone. We’ve come just before Christmas and the decorations are as lavish as you’d imagine: a vast gingerbread house in the famous loos, a rotating crystal tree in the Library and an actual Sugar Plum Fairy dancing in the hall. (Christmas continues until 6 January here, so there’s still time). We’re here for lunch at the Glade, described as “an artwork in decoupage; a landscape forest inspired by a 1900’s greeting card”. It’s a magical space, like stepping into an enchanted forest, with the

VERDICT Still winning after all these years

sense that there are sprites and fairies dancing in the shadows. In the evenings the Glade is all about cocktails, but during the day there’s breakfast and lunch, and the menu is dubbed “comfort”. It’s a small list of bar-type options including a club sandwich and a burger as well as boef bourgignon and cassoulet, a less formal selection than in the neighbouring famed pink Gallery. To start we have sweetcorn soup with popcorn, a sweet and creamy dish with a large dose of comfort, and a beetroot and goats cheese salad. Bavette steak is high class and equally comforting, while my halibut with parsnip puree is deliciously sleek and soft. Truffle parmesan fries continue the comfort theme, as do large chilled glasses of Sancerre. For pudding we share a festive slice of Yule Log, which is laced with hazelnut butter and lashings of chocolate. The Sugar Plum Fairy comes pirouetting in while we eat, adding to the magical atmosphere and we’re feeling pretty special ourselves by the time we’re finished. Thank you Sketch, and happy birthday. 9 Conduit Street, W1 sketch.london A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

INGREDIENTS • 280g Firm tofu • 2 tsp Gochujang paste • 1 tbsp Soy sauce • 2. tbsp Cornflour • 1 Red pepper • 1 tsp Sesame seeds • 200g Macaroni • 1 Vegetable stock cube • 100g Plant-based cheese • 1 tbsp Nutritional yeast • 250ml Plant-based cream • 2 Spring onions

METHOD 1 Crumble the tofu into small pieces and tip into a large bowl, along with 1 teaspoon of the gochujang paste and the soy sauce. Mix well, then sprinkle over 2 tablespoons of the cornflour and mix again. Set aside. 2 Finely slice the red pepper. Heat a drizzle of vegetable oil in a large frying pan over a high heat. Once hot, add the sliced red pepper to the pan and fry for 4–5 minutes until cooked. Remove from the pan and set aside on a plate. 3 Return the pan to a medium–high heat and add the tofu. Fry for 5 minutes, then add the sesame seeds and continue to cook for 2–3 minutes more until the tofu is golden and crispy. 4 Meanwhile, cook the macaroni in a large saucepan of boiling water for 8–10 minutes until tender. 5 To make the sauce, crumble the stock cube into a small bowl and grate in the plant-based cheese. Add the nutritional yeast and plant-based cream, along with the remaining tablespoon of cornflour and 1 teaspoon of gochujang paste. Stir in 150ml boiling water and season with salt and pepper. 6 Once the macaroni is cooked, loosely drain and return it to the saucepan. Pour over the sauce and cook over a low heat until the sauce has thickened slightly. Add the cooked pepper to the pan and stir through. Finely slice the spring onions. 7 Serve the macaroni in bowls, topped with the crispy tofu and spring onion slices.

Cashew and avocado pesto pasta with griddled courgettes and sun-dried tomatoes Serves 2 20 mins

METHOD 1 Tip the cashews into a large saucepan of boiling water and simmer for 5 minutes. Meanwhile,

slice the courgette into 1cm rounds and set aside for later. Using a slotted spoon, remove the cashews from the saucepan and set aside in a bowl. Bring the pan of water back to the boil, add the pasta, and simmer for 10 minutes. 2 To make the pesto, peel and stone the avocado and add the flesh to a blender, along with the basil, cashew nuts, nutritional yeast, garlic, 2 tablespoons of olive oil and 150ml water. Squeeze in half the lemon and blitz until smooth. 3 Heat a good drizzle of olive oil in a deep-sided frying pan over a high heat. Add the courgette slices and cook for 2–3 minutes on each side until charred, then take off the heat. 4 Once the pasta is cooked, loosely drain and return to the saucepan over a low heat, stirring through the pesto, courgette slices and sundried tomatoes. Warm through for 2 minutes. 5 Spoon the pesto pasta into serving bowls and top with a handful of fresh rocket, and a good squeeze of the remaining lemon. A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

fter the excesses of Christmas, many of us are looking for some lighter options this month. In true Italian style, San Carlo uses only the finest and freshest seasonal ingredients, allowing these to shine. Italian food is based on simple cooking. So if the quality of your ingredients is good enough, then people will come back,” says San Carlo CEO Marcello Distefano. Healthy Menu Options for January include soups such as classic Minestrone or slow-cooked lentil and vegetable, while simple salads including chicken, tuna and buffalo mozzarella are perennial favourites. Pollo Marinato is a popular dish of flattened chicken breast with a caper, butter and lemon sauce, while Tonno e Lenticchie is a delicious charcoal grilled yellowfin tuna served with tomato lentils that goes well with

baby spinach sauteed with garlic oil and chilli. Dessert spans delicious gelato and San Carlo’s famous pistachio or Italian style millefeuille cakes, tortes and mousses. DEVIL in the DETAIL

Eggs are always a healthy option, and José Pizarro has lots of creative ways with them

E

ggs are an excellent nutritional all-rounder. Packed with protein, they are quick to cook and versatile, they adapt to countless flavours and never get boring. At José Pizarro’s Bermondesy Street restaurant Lolo, the ‘all-day gathering’ menu features a delightful array of egg dishes. Devilled eggs feature Catalina salted anchovy, Salted cod and saffron sauce, Smoked eel, or Sobrasada, and the Tortilla Vigas, José’s playful take on the “lazy omelette” comes with toppings like crips, caramelised onions and 100% paleta Ibérica 5J, or cured salmon, dill, crème fraîche, Lilliput capers and lemon. Here’s his special recipe for devilled eggs.

1 Put the eggs into a pan of cold water and bring to boil, then boil for 6 minutes. Drain and cool under cold running water. 2 Make the aioli. Put the egg yolk in a bowl with some sea salt and freshly ground white pepper. Whisk in the garlic and cider vinegar. 3 Gradually whisk in the olive oil until you have a smooth thick emulsion, then whisk in the extra virgin olive oil and 1/2 tbsp of just boiled water. Add lemon juice to taste and set aside. 4 Peel the eggs and half of them lengthways. Scoop the yolks out into a bowl and mash well then add 2 tbsp of the alioli, a pinch of pimentón. Mix well then spoon this mixture back into the egg white halves and arrange on a plate. Finish with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, a dust of pimentón and the anchovies. josepizarro.com/venues/lolo @lolo_bermondseystreet

New year, new you... that's what they say anyway. But it doesn't have to be a whole new you. A few small changes can make a big difference. Maybe starting a new gym class, or looking into increasing wellbeing with a better diet... or simply some self-esteemboosting beauty treatments. There are lots of ideas in this section, so read on.

Dr Nyla Raja looks into the aesthetics trends we can expect to see in 2025 66

highly respected and much sought after skin specialist and cosmetic dermatology GP, Dr Nyla Raja has practiced medicine for over 20 years and has personally delivered over 200,000 treatments with exceptional results. Trusted by television personalities, well-known celebrity figures and some of the UK’s most familiar faces, she is considered to be one of the top cosmetic doctors in the country. Here she gives her insight into the top skincare and aesthetics trends to watch in 2025. Dr Nyla says: “As we move into 2025, the world of aesthetics and skincare will continue to evolve. It’s not just about the aesthetic outcome anymore, but a holistic approach to maintaining skin health and longevity. Patients are looking for advanced, non-invasive treatments that enhance natural beauty and focus on long-term skin wellness. Below are some of the biggest trends in 2025.”

UNDETECTABLE BEAUTY

2025 will be all about 'undetectable beauty', where aesthetic treatments enhance your natural features without being visibly noticeable. The desire for subtle, natural-looking enhancements is at an all-time high. Patients are increasingly leaning towards procedures that deliver natural, 'undetectable' results. They want to look refreshed, not altered. Microlifting, skin tightening treatments, and injectables will focus on enhancing natural contours and improving skin tone.

PREVENTATIVE AESTHETIC S

Younger generations are increasingly focused on 'prejuvenation' – preventing the signs of ageing before they occur. Patients are looking for preventative treatments that preserve skin firmness and delay signs of ageing, without the need for more invasive interventions later on. Light peels, laser facials, and microinjectables will become key treatments.

ADVANCED SKIN TIGHTENING AND FIRMING

We’re seeing incredible advancements in skintightening technologies. These treatments offer non-invasive, long-lasting solutions that help patients achieve firmer, more youthful skin without downtime. Treatments like our bespoke Transformation Facelift™ use advanced technologies to target deeper layers of the skin, lifting and firming without the need for invasive surgery. In just a few sessions, we can help restore volume and improve skin texture, leaving you with a smoother, more youthful appearance. Additionally, our Transformation Bodylift targets stubborn fat in specific areas, to contour and reshape the body and build muscle for men and women. The treatment program combines different technologies bespoke to individual needs,

TONE + TITE THERAPY

and leaves patients feeling empowered, sculpted, and ready to step out with confidence. The images below show one recent case study with fabulous results. Using a variety of innovative technologies, Tone & Tite therapy addresses all five key causes of cellulite. By combining radiofrequency and acoustic wave technology, the treatment plan works on both the superficial and deeper layers of the skin to improve tone and texture, delivering long-lasting results without downtime.

pinning more plates than usual with a big house move (plus a toddler), getting out for regular nail appointments has been low down on my list of priorities recently. So when Roxanne Campbell, celebrity manicurist and founder of Revarnish London offered me an at-home appointment, I booked in straightaway. With my flat all packed up in boxes, I wasn’t sure if we’d have anywhere to sit, but her lovely assistant assured me that she could make any surface (even an ironing board!) work. Roxanne founded the London-based nails service during the pandemic and her team of manicurists can travel all over the city for at-home, or hotel room appointments. “At first I wanted it to be like Uber for nails”, she told me “but then I realised a luxury service was more important than growing the business too quickly.” Roxanne’s client list includes Alicia Keys, Millie Mackintosh, and Idris Elba, and she’s been a judge for nail competitions. Her highly skilled team can do it all – from biab, to nail art, and Russian manicures and pedicures. I’m booked in for a gel manicure, and luckily my dining table is still assembled when Roxanne visits. Roxanne is so easy to chat to, it feels like having a friend over. I choose a light pinky tone and Roxanne shapes and paints my nails meticulously. I’m really happy with the results, and the manicure is so good that my nails last three weeks – no small thing when you’re in the middle of a house move. REVARNISH LONDON Gel manicure, £50

n aesthetic surgeon once told me I had the ‘perfect face for Botox’ as I’m so expressive. Under the radar ‘tweakments’ are becoming more and more common in my friendship group of forty-somethings – and I must admit there’s been a huge temptation to go down the injection route myself. Over the years, I’ve tried everything from LED masks to serums, but I’m yet to find anything to completely banish my forehead lines. Interestingly, a new trend for 2025 marks a shift away from fillers and injectables, embracing a holistic ‘healthy ageing’ approach instead. I met the facialists leading the way... A NEW YEAR , A Where will 2025 take you? The new year is a good time to take charge of your health

J

anuary marks a time of change and new perspectives, lines drawn and fresh beginnings, whether it’s a commitment to make better lifestyle choices, start a new exercise regimen or plan a larger life change. Indeed, over the festive period and into January is a particularly busy time for healthcare bookings, as people

76

plan their family’s year ahead. The new year also marks a time when people feel most empowered to take charge of their health, their lives and make positive changes.

A TRIGGER FOR CHANGE

This time of year can naturally lead some people to focus on health, perhaps looking at booking a skin/mole check for themselves or a member of their family,

review an area that has been bothering them or take time away from circulation to recharge the social battery. For others, it might be a time to seriously consider cosmetic surgery - particularly if there is an area of their body that has long been impacting self-esteem. Cosmetic surgery is often misunderstood as purely vanity-driven, but for many it’s a means of self-care to restore appearance, reconstruct a sense of self and empower themselves to live life to the full. The benefits of surgery often extend well beyond the physical outcome and can completely shift a person’s mindset, bringing renewed confidence,

Carly Glendinning tries FOLD, a brandnew at-home foldable reformer bed

eformer Pilates has massively blown up in the past year, with London studios popping up faster than you can say “upside down elephant”. Some are so exclusive, you have to get up at the crack of dawn to book a space, and it’s not uncommon for a single class to set you back £30. Taking place on a bed-like machine, we’re all crazy for the full-body workout – which promises strength, flexibility, coordination, and a honed physique. Getting out for classes isn’t easy though when you’re a toddler mum, so I’ve been practising Pilates every day at home instead. I’ve seen

great results on the mat, but recently I’ve been feeling ready to take my workouts to the next level. Enter the newly launched ‘FOLD’ reformer bed. Beautifully crafted from premium Canadian maple wood and upholstered in sleek beige or black leather, this seriously stylish piece of equipment offers a studio-quality workout in the comfort of your own home. The compact design is a huge part of the appeal, and as the name implies, it’s easy to fold and stow away. My FOLD bed arrived pre-assembled and all I had to do was attach the head and shoulder rests, loop bars, and the padded double loop straps. Also included was a box, jumpboard and a starter bundle

with a Pilates mat, Pilates circle, Pilates ball, 1kg dumbbells, plus three months complimentary access to the FOLD app. The app features workouts for every level – from beginner to advanced. It's super easy to use, the expert instructors make the workouts fun. There's also the added benefit of being able to chat to other members of the FOLD founding community. I’ve been hooked from the get-go, and I've used my bed so much that I’ve actually hardly needed to ‘FOLD’ it away at all. Original FOLD Reformer bed £1,899.99; access to the FOLD app £9.99pm after initial three months. foldreformer.com

MEGA STRETCH You’ve tried reformer… now try LA’s latest import, the Lagree Megaformer By PENDLE HARTE

E

veryone knows about the transformative power of Pilates, but the secret to Michelle Obama’s arms and Jennifer Aniston’s physique is something else. The Lagree Method is relatively new to London but it’s huge in LA, and while it might seem similar to Pilates, it’s crucially different. Lagree Method is a high-intensity, low-impact workout designed to strengthen, tighten, and tone the body using a specialised machine called the Megaformer. I have come to Studio Fix in Kensington, a state-of-the art gym with an architecty feel and three luxe studio spaces, plus high class facilities (changing rooms feature Aesop products, Dyson hairdryers and all the styling tools you can think of). The Lagree studio is mirrored and dimly lit; the Megaformers might look to the untrained eye like regular reformer machines but

there are differences. While the reformer was invented in the 1920s, the Megaformer is relatively new. It’s bigger, with more moving parts and lots of handles. The trainer asks if it’s my first time and explains that Lagree is “about three times harder than reformer”. And she’s not wrong. Our first position is a plank, and with my hands and feet on unstable sliding bases, I’m working extra hard just to hold the position, and that’s before we start moving one leg to the side.

The trainer explains that Lagree is “about three times harder than reformer”

The method focuses on slow, controlled movements that engage multiple muscle groups simultaneously, and we keep being told to slow down. Within moments I am struggling, and unlike reformer, we spend no time at all lying on our backs. There are lots of anchoring points on the Megaformer, with lots of places to tuck your feet and various things to hold on to, and it’s easy to follow instructions thanks to numbered areas, and easily adjustable springs. Lagree promotes endurance, flexibility, and core strength while minimising joint stress, making it suitable for people of all fitness levels. Each session is intense but low-impact, targeting muscles to fatigue for maximum results. Popular for its efficiency, a typical class lasts around 45 minutes, providing a full-body workout in a short time frame. I’m glad when it’s over, but I’ll certainly be back. studiofix.co.uk A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

“More emphasis is now on multijoint compound movements”

DESIGN TRENDS

Training TRENDS An update from the world of fitness from Mick Rolton of Gym Design & Supply

I

am seeing a holistic approach among my clientele now. Rather than just plain rest (doing nothing), active rest or LISS (Low-Intensity Steady State) cardio, yoga, meditation and stretching is being seen as just as important as High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). The standard of barbells, dumbbells and cables in a gym has not changed but I am seeing more using lower reps (less than 8) in their routines that maximises strength gains, improves tone significantly and avoids building significant muscle. More emphasis is now on multi-joint compound movements such as squats (rather than leg extensions), as this maximises calorie burn in less time. This is a very effective mix with this holistic approach. Far more females are using heavy weights than ever before which is a truly wonderful trend to see. This is needed even more for females with age than males as this also helps protect bones and muscles optimising their functional mobility. I am seeing more clients veering away from dedicated Peleton or Norditrack (iFit) cardio. The equipment is ok but being stuck with

Because of this holistic change, people are wanting to access to larger screens (ideally a large TV on the wall) for their workouts to help them be guided through on a cardio or holistic workout. Cardio has to be versatile with access to a number of fitness Apps and not just one. Space is a premium so people are looking at all-in-one machines that can offer a variety from one machine, like a half squat with cables (unlike most commercial gyms that offer only 1 to 2 exercises per machine). A lot more effort is going into home gym design these days as people want it to be their happy place and feel great walking into before they work out. Due to this, rather than just plain painted walls, we are seeing a lot more creativity such as inspiring messages on walls via stylish acrylics or lightboxes and beautiful cladding and mirrors. gymdesignsupply.com

one fitness app only is starting to feel very limiting for them. This is especially relevant if there is more than one user in the family. As with online TV subscriptions, people are utilising a number of them for versatility. Whilst some are still using Peleton+ and iFit Apps on their own cardio, I see people using: • For Strength – Stronglifts, Strong & Gymverse • Cardio – ICG, Zwift, Kinomap, Rouvy • Classes - Les Mills, Apple

“Every patient walks away with a clearer understanding of their eye health”

Clear VISION The Eye Place: a clear vision for comprehensive eye care

A

s a cornerstone of community health, The Eye Place has earned a reputation for excellence in eye care, blending expertise with a deeply personal approach to meet the unique needs of each patient. With their commitment to providing state-of-the-art eye examinations and services, they have become synonymous with high standards and trustworthiness in the realm of optometry. At The Eye Place, eye examinations go beyond merely updating prescriptions. The skilled opticians utilise advanced technology to assess overall eye health, detect underlying conditions and ensure optimal visual clarity. Each examination is a thorough and tailored experience, ensuring every patient walks away with a clearer understanding of their eye health and the tools they need to maintain it. January marks Glaucoma Awareness Month, a vital time to spotlight the 'silent

86

thief of sight.' Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of irreversible vision loss, yet early detection through routine eye examinations can make all the difference. Often symptomless in its early stages, glaucoma can quietly damage the optic nerve, resulting in gradual vision loss if left untreated. At The Eye Place, the team prioritises preventive care. Their comprehensive examinations include wide angle and 3D thickness retinal imaging to enable them to perform microscopic optic nerve assessments. This is crucial for detecting early signs of glaucoma. By catching the condition early, patients can begin treatment to manage the disease effectively and preserve their vision. Ideally, with regular eye examinations, The Eye Place will find glaucoma before your vision is affected. Beyond glaucoma, The Eye Place excels in diagnosing and managing a range of ocular conditions, from Blepharitis (dry eyes) to age-related macular degeneration. We also strive to break down the stigma surrounding hearing aids. Just as reading glasses sharpen vision, hearing aids enhance speech and sound clarity, reduce strain on the brain, and improve quality of life. It’s about making life easier, not older.

projects. Collectively, the team brings decades of expertise, combining professional experience with a genuine commitment to improving lives through better hearing.

A PERSONALISED APPROACH At the heart of what we do is the belief that hearing care is about more than technology— it’s about people. We take the time to know every individual who walks through our doors, offering tailored solutions that fit their lifestyle and preferences. Whether it’s a simple earwax removal, custom sleep plugs or lifelong hearing care, we provide a friendly, supportive environment.

As independent audiologists, we pride ourselves on offering a broad range of hearing solutions, working with all major hearing aid manufacturers to find the perfect fit for each patient. Our no-obligation hearing aid trials give patients the confidence to explore their options without upfront commitments – simply pay if you love them or return them if you don’t.

DO YOU NEED A HEARING ASSESSMENT? Have you recently: • Smiled and nodded through conversations you struggled to hear? • Answered a question you didn’t catch, hoping your response made sense? • Missed parts of TV dialogue that others seemed to hear effortlessly? • Avoided speaking up in noisy environments because conversation felt too overwhelming? If you’re over 50, there’s a good chance you may have some level of hearing loss. And you’re not alone—hearing loss is a natural part of aging, but it doesn’t have to affect your quality of life.

EXPERIENCE THE DIFFERENCE From advanced hearing assessments to cutting-edge technology, we’re here to help you stay connected to the world around you. Join us at one of our ten locations and discover how we’re redefining hearing care with professionalism, expertise, and heart. Visit our website to book today earplace.co.uk

INNER BALANCE Here’s why prioritising your wellbeing should be on top of your list for 2025

B

urnout, chronic fatigue, stress, digestive issues or life changes that require a new set of skills - all these factors affect so much more than just your health. When we feel off-balance, we hinder our ability to enjoy life to its fullest. Aches and discomfort begin to manifest into diseases, and our capacity to manage everyday stress and be present in the moments that matter becomes limited. By giving yourself the time to regain the balance between your mind and body, you’ll be able to find what really prevents you from enjoying optimal wellbeing. Slowing down and paying attention to how our mind and body feel can be a challenge in this fast-paced world, but it’s perhaps the only real route towards unearthing the healthiest version of you.

“Real health and longevity begin with a healthy balance”

THE HEALING POWER OF SOLITUDE Enter this new chapter of your life by embracing meaningful time alone. Whether you start by introducing mindful activities, such as Breathwork and Journalling into your routine, or immerse in a completely new, holistic approach to your wellbeing - it all begins with taking the time to assess and address what’s within, alone. Quality time alone means giving yourself the space to separate from your day. To put aside the stresses and worries and instead, prioritise how you feel in your mind and body. Only then can you put in the work to align those two elements and begin the journey of authentic self-healing. Because when disconnected, our mental and physical wellbeing take a toll. An unhealed injury can manifest as anxiety, and chronic stress can translate into aches and discomfort.

FINDING YOUR HARMONY, NATURALLY It doesn’t matter how nutritious the food

you eat is or how many miles you run every morning. If your mind and body are disconnected, you won’t be able to enjoy the benefits of the work you put in. Holistic solutions can help you tap into the root of your discomfort. Real health and longevity begin with a healthy balance. When you tune into what’s within, your energy rises and you vibrate on a higher, more resonant frequency which promotes genuine self-healing.

EQUIPPED WITH SKILLS AND TOOLS THAT HELP YOU FLOURISH Carefully curated and entirely bespoke, a holistic approach to your wellbeing offers treatments which address your specific needs and help you target dis-ease before it manifests into disease. Private Members’ Wellness Space Grey Wolfe was created to provide refuge from our hyperconnected world. Resting on the ethos of healing through

the power of solitude, they immerse members in a curated blend of pioneering BioTech and hands-on treatments, all infused with ancient spiritual wisdom and philosophy. Members enjoy the privacy of the space completely uninterrupted as they embark on a journey of healing through attuned care, as they align their physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing. Along with regular check-ins, detailed nutritional diagnosis and personalised treatment plans, expert practitioners can help you tap into wisdom and energy that lives within you.

SKINCARE for workouts Achillea Beauty’s unique skincare products are sustainable and developed specifically for active people

A

chillea Beauty is a progressive and sustainable skincare brand specifically dedicated for exercise. We are the first and only company to have developed a facial mist that gets activated by motion - increased heart rate, blood pumping close to the skin surface and open pores. This unique state of the skin during exercise is what we leverage in order to enhance the post-workout glow, hydrate skin to maintain a youthful appearance and keep the pores clean and unclogged. We are the first brand to develop a range of products dedicated to exercise. No other company leverages the state of the skin during workouts

“Fighting acne, aging and lack of glow through intelligent ingredients in sustainable packaging”

(increased heart beat, open pores, blood pumping closer to skin level, skin cells going into repair mode, sweat) to fight acne, aging and lack of glow through intelligent ingredients. Other companies that focus on exercise have developed make-up that stays in place and resists the changes at skin levels, but no one has focused on skincare and a pre, during and post workout beauty ritual. By reframing exercise as an act that enhances skin health, Achillea Beauty could land as the fitness partner for the active eco-conscious consumers. Our products leverage the state of the skin during physical exercise to unleash the effect of science backed-up ingredients. Taking advantage of the increased heart rate, higher pulse and unique skin condition by activating 100% natural components that come in industry-first packaging and work hard not just against delivering a better complexion, but also supporting environmental causes and adhering to clean, transparent beauty practices. Leveraging all these changes at skin level enables us to get science-backed, clean ingredients to work hard for one’s complexion whilst having a clear purpose in mind: to work for the environment, by taking no virgin packaging resources and giving back precious oxygen that fuels exercise. Achillea is a closed do good, be successful loop. Our three products are: Kick some dirt, our super potent no-rinse cleansing water, A drop of magic, our hero, exercise-triggered facial mist and Jelly by now, our 2 min mask, specifically created to activate quickly whilst you’re showering post workout. It took us more than three years to perfect and test the formula. Our cocktail of potent actives has been sourced from around Europe (UK, Switzerland, Italy, Romania) and we are 100% transparent on the full list, being as close to natural, clean ingredients as possible. We use yarrow (Achillea Millefolium) in all our products due to its extraordinary properties (anti inflammatory, antimicrobial, moisturising, soothing, purifying and anti-aging) – it’s like a magic wand in the ingredients world. achilleabeauty.com, instagram.com/achillea.beauty tiktok.com/@achillea_beauty

“RESPITE CARE IS FLEXIBLE AND CAN SUIT A RANGE OF NEEDS”

Just for

YOU Care as and when you need it: the benefits of respite, or a short stay, in a care home

T

aking a break is essential, especially when caring for a loved one. Providing care can be both rewarding and demanding, and a short stay in a care home – known as respite care – can provide much needed relief, while your loved one enjoys a safe, comfortable environment with personalised care. Mulberry Court is part of the Fremantle Trust a not-for-profit charity with 10 care homes providing exceptional care in the Buckinghamshire community for over 30 years, dedicated to putting care and people at the heart of everything it does..

WHAT IS RESPITE CARE? Respite care is a short-term stay, typically lasting one to six weeks, in a care home. Mulberry Court offers this type of care to support both caregivers,

and those receiving care. It’s a chance for caregivers to rest, knowing their loved one is receiving compassionate care in a home from home setting.

WHEN TO ARRANGE RESPITE CARE Respite care is flexible and can suit a range of needs. It might be right for you if you are planning a holiday, in need of extra help during a busy period like the holiday season, or if your loved one needs support recovering from an illness or operation. It might benefit your loved one to have a change of scenery or time amongst other people. Respite care is also an opportunity to try a care home as a potential longer-term care solution.

THE BENEFITS OF RESPITE CARE A short stay allows you, the caregiver, to step away from caregiving duties and focus on your own well-being, confident that your loved one is in a safe, nurturing environment. During a respite stay at Mulberry Court, your loved one will enjoy the same level of care and attention as long-term residents, with access to amenities, daily social activities, new experiences and nutritious meals. The staff at Mulberry Court encourages each person to maintain independence and enjoy life fully. Respite care can be booked up to 12 months in advance, and when you book 3 weeks of respite care you can enjoy a fourth week free. new year Why Merry People wellington boots are just what you need to kick-start 2025

J

anuary seems to be the time when we realise there is nothing better for the soul than venturing out into the countryside, breathing in the fresh air, walking off that festive excess. But one thing you can count on is terrible British winter weather, so your planning needs to start from the bottom up – and inspiration comes from the other side of the world in Australia. Launched in 2014, Merry People is now Australia’s highest rated wellington boots. They are 100% waterproof, keeping your feet dry whatever the weather (particularly handy at this time of the year), and a warm neoprene lining (3mm thick) has been tested for subzero weather conditions. They also have added arch-support, making them comfortable for long walks. “Merry People started as an idea, born out of a practical frustration,” says founder Danielle Pearce. “Growing up on a farm in South Gippsland, Victoria, I was familiar with just how useful gumboots can be, but couldn’t find a pair that bridged the gap between city and country life. I took a pretty crazy leap of faith and set out to create my own boots.” Merry People has come far in a decade. They look absolutely fantastic, coming in a wide range of colours – from neutrals and pastels to bright bolds – and there’s something for all the family, with a unisex design in a host of sizes and special children’s boots too. So, with that desire to start 2025 off on the right healthy foot, Merry People should be your starting point. As Danielle wonderfully sums up: “Like my journey, Merry People represents finding what makes you feel happy and alive.”

aving recently returned to the UK after 10 years living in Mumbai, the couple were delighted to discover that the property directly beneath their Belsize Park mansion-block apartment was for sale. Keen for extra room for their two teenage daughters and visiting friends and family, they snapped it up and commissioned Bradley Van Der Straeten architects to join the two dwellings together. Their brief: a bright, joyful space inspired by their love of art, their travels and fond memories of their former home in India. ‘We wanted to recreate the open and inviting

atmosphere that we had there,’ explains Sreeja. ‘It had a wide layout, unlike the smaller rooms and tall buildings that are typical of London. Additionally, it was important for us to have an integrated guest area. We want our visitors to feel like they’re part of our home.’ The biggest challenge facing lead architect George Bradley was finding the best location for a staircase to connect the two levels. Various options were considered, but the final design placed spiral steps next to the main entry, with a study in the double-height void behind. Several walls in the lower apartment were then knocked through to form a sociable living room and an open-plan kitchen and dining area linked by fluted-glass doors that let light stream throughout. A

FACING PAGE: Light cascades down the spiral staircase, which forms a striking feature in its own right. The treads are painted in Little Greene’s deep Smalt blue, with a lighter hue on the grooved panelling above. A simple white handrail and spherical glass wall lamp provide elements of contrast. ABOVE: ‘The kitchen is such a happy space, and it gives us an uplifting feeling every time we walk in,’ says Gautham. The cupboards around the sink are painted in Little Greene’s Mazarine blue, while Farrow & Ball’s Blazer red adorns the island unit. The grooved end of the latter mirrors both the staircase and the fluted glass of the panelling and doors.

separate snug doubles as guest accommodation. In the upper apartment, much of the original layout was retained to create a series of bedrooms that gaze out over the treetops. A palette of lush greens, reds and blues drawn from Sreeja and Gautham’s collection of Indian, Brazilian and Seychellois art is carried throughout, uniting the newly joined apartments into a cohesive home. Natural timber provides another recurring theme, with oak herringbone flooring, grooved panelling and dark-stained oak cabinetry featuring across both levels. The structural steel beams, meanwhile, are left on show and highlighted in a pale shade of aquamarine. Getting the kitchen right was particularly important for Sreeja and Gautham, who are keen hosts and wanted to find a balance between functionality and aesthetics. The finished space is perhaps the most colourful of all, with a rounded brick-red island unit backed by tall cabinets in dark oak and vivid blue. Cleverly, the ceiling support columns have been integrated into the design, emerging from one end of the island unit. ‘When people visit, they

“A palette of lush greens, reds and blues is drawn from Indian, Brazilian and Seychellois art” all want to hang out there because it feels like a bar!’ Gautham laughs. ‘It’s very communal and it certainly suits Indian cookery, where many dishes need to be eaten immediately.’ The living room and bedrooms are slightly more muted but no less characterful, housing furniture and objects picked up during the couple’s travels and their time in India. Custommade display shelves, built-in wardrobes/ closets and large artworks are alternated with sections of blank wall, creating a serene feel. Curvaceous sofas and beds soften the straight lines, and in the living room the window frames have been picked out in dark chocolate brown to showcase the leafy outlook at the rear of the building. Uncluttered yet full of meaning, Sreeja and Gautham’s home is a testament to the power of colour to evoke memories and infl uence our mood. What’s more, it shows how colour can be used to overcome a myriad of design challenges, here playing a vital role in the transformation of once-separate apartments into a single duplex. With its clear sense of flow, this feels like a home that has always been.

On the wall are large portraits of dancers from Tamil Nadu by photographer Vasantha Yogananthan. ‘They remind us of a particular festival in Mumbai, when there would be celebrations and music outside our window,’ explains Sreeja. THIS PAGE, ABOVE: Clad in green tadelakt plaster, the en-suite bathroom features a curved walk-in shower that echoes the shape of the staircase and incorporates windows on either side. The fluted-glass screen references the internal glazing downstairs, while narrow mosaic tiles and terrazzo surfaces add texture and detail. Winter WELLNESS Where to position your bed for the perfect slumber during winter (with a touch of Feng Shui)

D

id you know that where you position your bed during winter could actually be the key to getting a good night’s sleep? The ancient practice of Feng Shui, which emphasises harmony between your living space and energy flow, can help you create a more balanced and restful bedroom, especially in winter. Sleep tech firm Simba has teamed up with Lisa Artis of The Sleep Charity to share expert tips on how to enhance your bedroom’s layout to promote warmth, comfort, and restful slumber during winter - with some Feng Shui tips to invite positive energy (Chi) into your sleep space.

Steer clear of cold draughts

Cold draughts from windows or doors can disrupt sleep, so avoid placing your bed directly in their path. In Feng Shui, positioning your bed in the Command Position - where you can see the door but are not directly aligned with it - encourages energy flow. A room temperature of 16–19°C is optimal for sleep, but cold spots can disturb your body’s thermal balance.

Stay cosy with a strategic heat source

Feng Shui recommends keeping balance by avoiding direct alignment with heat sources, which can cause overheating and restlessness. Position your bed a comfortable distance from radiators, allowing warmth to spread evenly without making you too hot.

Avoid exterior walls

wake up in darkness, which can leave us feeling groggy and out of sync. While the temptation to hibernate is strong, getting some early morning light is vital for regulating your sleep-wake cycle and banishing the winter blues. Plus, it helps to improve alertness and reduces symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

Create a snug, cocooned feeling

Exterior walls are often colder. For better insulation and comfort, position your bed against an interior wall to help maintain an optimal sleep environment.

In winter, the desire to feel safe, warm, and cocooned intensifies. Your bedroom should be a place to escape the cold, dark world outside. For an extra comforting sleep environment, think about placing your bed in a corner.

Wake up with natural light

Layer up with rugs

Winter days are short, and we often

Hardwood and tile floors may look chic, but

in winter they can feel like stepping onto a sheet of ice. Combat the cold underfoot by layering a thick, luxurious rug under or near your bed. Not only will it add an extra layer of warmth, but it also softens he room, making it the perfect place for sleepy feet to land in the morning.

Dim the lights, block the glare

Invest in blackout curtains or blinds. Consider bedside lamps to create a gentle, sleep-friendly atmosphere. A dark room can help regulate melatonin, the hormone responsible for a restful night’s sleep. By aligning your bed placement with Feng Shui principles, you’ll invite a restful, balanced energy that nourishes your body and mind through the coldest months of the year. constrained sites. However, their true success lies in the health and wellbeing of those that live inside 2024 RIBA House of the Year Award Chair, Je Ahn, said: “A house can be many things – this year’s shortlist shows the breadth of possibilities. From rural contexts to tight urban sites, including fine craftsmanship and intergenerational living amongst other driving forces – all these houses are essentially about the people who live inside. Together the shortlisted exemplars offer scalable solutions to the urgent issues of today – displaying care towards sustainability and social changes, including the revival of historic buildings which don't negatively impact the natural environment. We were impressed by the ambition of both the architects and clients to meet the challenge of the contemporary home.”

ocated across England and Wales, the houses on the shortlist for The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) House of the Year 2024have been drawn from the wider cohort of 2024 RIBA Award winners, representing the UK’s best new architecture. This year’s final six represent a broad mix of different design approaches that are located across deeply rural and densely urban areas. The shortlist includes sensitively upgraded listed buildings (The Hall and Plas Hendy Stable Block) that show how centuries-old architecture can be repurposed; brand-new beautifully-crafted homes in natural settings (Farmworker’s House and Eavesdrop); and two homes in London (Peckham House and Six Columns) that navigate complex city sites. Commenting on the winning projects, RIBA President Muyiwa Oki, “These six homes show how we can deliver high-quality residential architecture with impact.Exemplars in sensitive restoration, climate-conscious design and ingenious urban placemaking – they each present a bold, creative solution to meet housing needs. A Grade II listed Arts & Crafts stable block has been rescued and restored to create a novel and accessible family home. Simple materials, detailing, and variation are applied in spirited and thoughtful ways, balancing aesthetic, heritage, and ecological obligations, while upgrades to sustainability and references to the Arts & Craft movement – such as sawtooth brickwork and quarry tiles – create moments of playfulness while demonstrating the many benefits of repurposing existing buildings.

It makes efficient and sophisticated use of space, and materials, with sustainable and cost-reducing features. Brutalist references and creative flourishes – a stepping brickwork wall, rustications and pilasters, and a green marble panel – make for a distinct and refreshing aesthetic. Wherever possible, self-finished materials are employed; the ground floor has exposed painted brickwork, and readily-available spruce panels are used to create many of the fittings and joinery, which can be adjusted with ease over time. LIGHT UP Getting the light right in your bathroom: advice from Ripples London

“Bathrooms need a mixture of task, atmospheric and decorative lighting”

G

ood lighting can make all the difference in a bathroom space, but is quite often an overlooked part of bathroom design. Here we ask Jo, Senior Designer at Ripples London for her advice on getting the light right in your bathroom.

QWhat are the key things to consider

when planning bathroom lighting?

A The key things to consider when it comes to

bathroom lights are: the style and size of the fittings, how your lighting will be controlled (be it a switch, sensor or even an app on your phone) and the various layers of lighting which you might like to include (from task lighting through to atmospheric lighting). If you take time to think about who will use the bathroom and how, you’ll be able to consider the various mixture of lighting options that will suit your requirements. QWhat would you say is the perfect

mix of lighting for a bathroom? A I usually suggest a mixture of task lighting, atmospheric lighting, and decorative lighting to make sure your bathroom is equipped to suit a range of purposes and moods. Task lighting is great for applying makeup or shaving on dark winter mornings, as well as ensuring your bathroom is lit enough to be thoroughly cleaned. Contrastingly, atmospheric lighting helps create a sense of calm in the evening time and helps prepare the body for sleep. Decorative lighting offers a chance to choose something beautiful which you love, adding a sense of personality to your space.

QWhere should you start when

planning bathroom lighting?

A A good place to start is to assess the

amount of natural light available in your bathroom. Then, once the design process is underway, your bathroom designer can help suggest additional lighting options which will further enhance the room and create the atmosphere you’re hoping to achieve. At Ripples, we usually start with the task lighting as this often sits above your sanitaryware and helps to bounce light around the rest of the room. We then look to layer additional lighting sources, depending on the style and feeling the client wants to create. he alluring island of Kos is the third-largest of the Dodecanese Islands, just three nautical miles from Asia Minor. It’s an island of historical richness and incredible natural beauty, held in the azure embrace of the balmy, crystalclear Aegean Sea. It’s known as the birthplace of Hippocrates and is home to picturesque villages with winding streets lined with cascading bougainvillea and colourful shops,

myriad olive groves, and fabulous beaches. We’re heading to the Grecotel LUXME Kos Imperial on the island's northeastern coast, a short and scenic drive from the airport. It’s not long before we step into the cool, vast marble lobby. The views are breathtaking across tropical gardens and a glimmering lagoon towards the sapphire sea. The welcome is warm and the drinks are cool. We’re served glasses of bubbles and exotic juices to quench our thirst while we go through the quick and simple process of signing up for our stylish LUXME bracelet. The hotel’s Luxury Made Easy package makes for the ultimate in relaxed holidays with all food and drinks included in the upfront price. It’s the bracelet to heaven. Admin done, we are escorted through the stunning gardens filled with tropical plants to our large suite overlooking emerald lawns, one of the many pools, and the sparkle of the sea. It’s beautifully cool with a large veranda, giant luxury bathroom with walk-in shower and vast bed dressed with the crispest of linens. There’s a fridge full of chilled drinks of our choice and a fully stocked hot beverage area. Everything we need to make us feel at home. Which we soon do. Wandering through the lush gardens is a serene experience with winding pathways shaded by olive and palm trees leading to a wide range of facilities. We find sparkling pools, secluded relaxation spots, and terraces to soak in the beauty of the landscape. Best of all, there’s a large beach lined with sun loungers overlooking the crystal clear waters towards the hazy hills of Turkey on the opposite shore. For the energetic, there’s a gym, pilates, yoga and aqua aerobic classes, two A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

indoor pools for serious training and a spa. Being somewhat food focused we’re excited about the incredible array of culinary options and get our restaurants booked at check in. All the eateries have terraces designed for taking in that breathtaking view while we devour equally breathtaking dishes, including fine dining (think lobster and foie gras), Italian and Greek specialities, a hot-stone experience and, our favourite venue of all on the edge of the beach for Asian delights. Evenings end back in the bar for an ouzo nightcap (when in Greece) and some fabulous entertainment. There’s live music and dancing, and we even take part in the weekly trivia

quiz. Magical nights to savour before we retire to the luxury and peace of our sanctuary. We wake up to perfect blue skies and after a magnificent buffet breakfast Greekstyle, spend our days beach or poolside. The waters are balmy, the breezes are light and the cocktails delicious and refreshing. We swim and snooze, treat ourselves to blissful massages in the spa and meander through the colourful gardens as a sense of tranquility washes over us. To get more of a feel for this stunning island, we visit vibrant Kos Town, just a short drive away. It’s a bustling capital with abundant historical sites and seemingly endless shopping opportunities. We visit the gorgeous indoor market to stock up on local herbs and spices and souvenirs, explore bougainvillea-draped side streets and enjoy a chilled Mythos overlooking the harbour. We marvel at the place where Hippocrates, the ancient healer, taught under the shade of a plane tree and take a boat trip for a different perspective. As we skim the crystal sea taking in views of rolling hills, rugged coastlines and charming whitewashed villages, it’s time for reflection and relaxation. Hippocrates can undoubtedly rest peacefully knowing that his glorious island home in the sun continues to inspire and soothe. grecotel.com/luxme-kosimperial/

H

olidays, once you have children, are more about spending quality time together as a family, than hitting OOO and getting to relax. Well at least that’s what I thought – until my husband and I visited the Phaea collection in Crete with our three-year-old in tow. The largest of the Greek islands, Crete is known for its natural beauty – with four breathtaking mountain ranges, two national parks, and miles of golden coastline. The stunning scenery makes the perfect backdrop for the stylish Phaea Cretan Malia resort, a member of Design Hotels, and its elegant sister hotel, Phaea Blue, a member of the Small Luxury Hotels Collection.

Phaea Cretan Malia THE RESORT

Family-owned and run, Phaea Cretan Malia has become a favourite for those with young children. Its warm, eclectic décor blends design-led furniture with curated artworks, appealing to parents who don’t want to give up on style just because they are travelling with kids. With a cosy, boutique vibe, the resort never feels overcrowded. Everything—rooms, restaurants, pools, and beach—is within easy walking distance.

THE ROOM Our room is cosy and stylish, with Cretan blue tiles and crisp white sheets. There’s a cute day bed set up for our daughter, but

RELAXATION AT THE MAIN POOL

of course she wants to sleep in with us, and luckily there’s plenty of space in the double. Overlooking a private garden, the room has everything from eco-friendly toiletries, to easy access to the pool – ideal for nap breaks and sunscreen top-ups.

THINGS TO DO The hotel has two heated pools and my husband and I take turns to splash about while the other lounges on the canopied daybeds. At the second pool, my daughter is excited to discover a cute ice cream parlour called ‘The Crush’. The beachfront location offers a private area with loungers, and there’s also a mini spa, and a gym where I enjoy morning yoga.

THE KIDS CLUB The Little Explorers club (ages 3–12) offers drop-off care, while Tiny Explorers (ages 0–3) requires parents to stay. It’s like a stylish Montessori nursery, with activities including cooking, dance parties, and movie nights. The best bit is that you can drop your kids off and pick them up any time between 10am - 5pm. This allows my husband and I to get some (rare!) time to ourselves.

THE FOOD The hotel has five restaurants, a traditional Cretan coffee shop, and a main bar. The restaurants showcase the very best of Cretan cuisine. Breakfast at Mediterraneo features a family-friendly buffet. At Mouries, Chef Lefteris Iliadis prepares traditional Cretan dishes with ingredients fresh from the hotel’s organic garden. Other highlights include Levant-inspired sharing plates at poolside Mezze, Chef Athinagoras Kostakos’ authentic Italian cuisine overlooking the sea at Almyra, and cocktails at The Beach Shack. All of the restaurants offer a kids’ menu. A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

Phaea Blue THE RESORT

Just a short drive west of Phaea Cretan Malia, is Phaea Blue in Elounda. An intimate hideaway, the vibe is understated elegance and quiet luxury, with stylish décor and second-to-none service. The resort is spread out, and we only really see other guests at the restaurants. The hotel has an impressive app, with an online concierge ready to answer your every query day-or-night. We use this to arrange Club Cars to take us from our room to the restaurants, and down to the beach.

THE ROOM With a private and secluded feel, our palatial Junior Suite is perfect for families. There’s a cosy lounge area set up with a bed for our three-year-old, a main bedroom overlooking the private heated pool, a huge bathroom with a roll-top bath, double sinks, and a double shower, and a separate ensuite. The décor is plush, with lots of extra special touches including a portable B&O Beolit speaker, and the staff deliver traditional Cretan snacks to our door every afternoon.

STUNNING SEA SIDE POOL VIEWS

There’s also lots of other opportunities for relaxation – including spa treatments, a gym, and a movie area snug.

THE KIDS CLUB There’s a small kids club at Phaea Blue with a cute little garden playground. There’s a daily programme of activities, but it’s quiet when we visit in September, so we don’t end up leaving our daughter. It’s great to have the option though if you want some time to relax.

THINGS TO DO

THE FOOD

With a sweeping mountain backdrop, we could easily relax on the private sunloungers on the beach, or flop by the main pool all day. However, there’s plenty to see and do in the local area. The hotel’s concierge can arrange exclusive experiences – from private wine tasting to lessons in Greek cuisine. One afternoon we enjoy a traditional Caique experience, cruising the turquoise waters of the Aegean Sea. We have a champagne lunch onboard, and swim straight off the boat.

There’s two main restaurants at Phaea Blue: al-fresco dining at Anthós and the beach-side Blue Door Taverna. A refined approach to traditional Cretan cuisine, we enjoy sharing dishes from award-winning Creative Consultant Chef Athinagoras Kostakos at Anthós. Ingredients are sourced from the resort’s organic kitchen garden, and also from carefully selected regional farms. From breakfast to dinner, the dining experience is extra special,

but the staff are so warm we always feel welcome with our three year old. Once an old fisherman’s stone house, you feel like you are dining in a family home at Blue Door Taverna. Delicious dishes are inspired by timeless traditional Cretan cuisine, and the service goes above and beyond. Rooms at Phaea Cretan Malia start at £126 including breakfast if booked through Design Hotels; designhotels.com A Junior Suite with Pool at Phaea Blue starts at €625 per night; phaeablue.com

PERFECT PACKING We rented travel essentials from Tiny Explorers for our trip. thing How Folkestone is becoming an appealing destination for art lovers and the design world

aking up to the sound of waves and a view of the sea is a joy. And with the fast train from St Pancras to Folkestone taking less than an hour, the Kent coast is an excellent weekend destination. It’s a fact not lost on the developers behind Shoreline, a luxurious new collection of beach houses and apartments built directly on the shingle near to Folkestone’s vibrant Harbour Arm. This is where we wake up to the sound of waves, in a location that’s as close to the actual water as we’ve ever stayed before. Shoreline is a beautiful architectural showpiece, a curvaceous structure that sits right on the beach, positioned for its impressive views. It is home to a variety of beach houses and apartments aimed at holidaymakers, and interiors by stylish 8 Holland Street are beautiful, featuring classic pieces by Vitra and Conran alongside top spec appliances. We are staying in the four bedroom beach house, a tall townhouse where the living room and kitchen take over the upper floors to maximise the views. Downstairs you can skip straight onto the beach, and a clever bootroom is designed to house surfboards, wetsuits, picnic chairs and other seaside paraphernalia. Throughout, the details are all spot on: careful lighting with lots of lamps and everything on dimmers, Aesop toiletries, fresh flowers. The kitchen is impossibly well equipped, including everything from a wine cooler to a Microplane, with enough plates for a huge dinner party. There’s even a lift, ensuring wheelchair users have access while helping with the issue of kitchen and dining room inhabiting separate levels. Over the past years, Folkestone has become

a vibrant hub for contemporary art, attracting global attention for its dynamic blend of creativity and community engagement. Central to this transformation is the Folkestone Triennial, an international public art exhibition established in 2008 by the Creative Folkestone charity. Held every three years, the Triennial invites acclaimed artists to create sitespecific works that interact with the town’s geography, history, and culture, turning Folkestone itself into an open-air gallery. The town's permanent artworks collection is another testament to its artistic evolution. Scattered across Folkestone are installations from previous Triennials, including iconic pieces like Cornelia Parker’s The Folkestone Mermaid and Richard Woods’ Holiday Home. Antony Gormley's contribution is Another Time, a solitary figure standing on the shoreline, visible only at low tide.

“The site-specific works interact with the town’s geography, history, and culture”

Creative Folkestone also oversees the Quarterhouse, a multi-purpose arts venue hosting theater, music, film, and workshops. Complementing this is the burgeoning Creative Quarter, a network of cobbled streets filled with independent galleries, studios, and artisan shops, reflecting the town’s commitment to fostering local talent and entrepreneurship. The Folkestone Harbour Arm has become a focal point for art, culture, and community in this historic coastal town. Once a derelict railway terminal, the Harbour Arm has been transformed into a vibrant public space where art plays a central role in enriching the visitor experience. At the heart of this transformation is the integration of diverse artistic expressions, ranging from large-scale installations to smaller, interactive pieces. The Harbour

Arm often serves as a venue for temporary exhibitions, live performances, and creative workshops, fostering an atmosphere of cultural exploration. Notable works from the Folkestone Triennial, an internationally renowned public art festival, have also been featured here, with the dramatic seascape offering a stunning backdrop for site-specific creations. Murals, sculptures, and light installations captivate visitors while blending with the natural beauty of the coastline. Beyond static art, the Harbour Arm hosts cultural events that celebrate music, film, and storytelling, creating a dynamic fusion of art and entertainment. Folkestone’s focus on art has revitalised its economy and identity, transforming it into a destination for cultural tourism. shorelinefolkestone.co.uk ROOF TERRACE, SHORELINE

Belfast is a city of delightful surprises, and nowhere more so than at Grand Central Hotel in the heart of the Linen Quarter Wo r d s L I B B Y N O R M A N

B GRAND CENTRAL

elfast is one of those cities which, once visited, are taken to heart – it's full of delightful surprises. We know this because we visited once before for a party weekend at the majestic Culloden Estate in Holywood. Now we're back to experience its city-centre sister, the Grand Central Hotel. Opened to much fanfare in 2018 by familyowned Hastings Hotels (a byword for Northern Irish hospitality) after a bold reinvention of an unloved office block, it's a new city landmark that has fitted seamlessly into Belfast's story. It sits in the Linen Quarter, where once prosperous cloth merchants traded with the world. Now this area is home to lively bars and shops, and a burgeoning arts scene. Grand Central stands tall at 80 metres, so its 300 rooms come with great views as standard. That said, ours is one of the best – we've been upgraded to a Mountain View Suite on the 21st floor with a sweeping vista across the city to Cavehill. Luxurious meets cosy here, all mellow tones and rich textures with a super-king and super-comfortable bed and lavish bathroom stocked with ESPA goodies. We also have a separate large space with kitchenette, dining and living areas, so our own swish apartment at the city's best address. Two floors up is The Observatory Bar, a new jewel in Belfast's crown as the highest cocktail bar in all Ireland. From its windows you have a panorama of landmarks, from City Hall and the yellow Harland & Wolff cranes that mark out the Titanic Quarter A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

to the brooding Belfast Hills. Mixology is serious business here, with a fantastic range of gins and Irish whiskeys, while signature cocktails are named after local landmarks. We discover that references to Belfast heritage are woven throughout the hotel – from the seahorse logo, first used by merchants and then adopted as a symbol of a great maritime trading city to the delicate framed Irish linen panel in our suite. There are many lovely public spaces to drink in subtle details, but we particularly enjoy the double height lobby with Art Deco-style Grand Café off to the side. You can see why it's a popular spot with the locals as soon as you step out onto the street, for you are in the heart of things. And this is such a walkable city. A short stroll takes us down historic streets full of quirky shops and cafes. We stop to explore Avoca, packed with gorgeous Irish textiles and produce, and then tour historic St George's Market where crowds come for crafts, food and live music from Friday through to Sunday. After dark, Belfast is about fun – people here dress up to head out on the town. We start by heading round the corner from Grand Central to the glitzy bar of the Europa Hotel, another great city landmark, before checking out the UK's only National Trust-owned pub opposite. If you only have time for one Irish pub in Belfast, then make it The Crown Bar – a perfectly preserved slice of Victoriana with its ornate entrance, cosy snugs and original gas lighting. If you have time for two pubs, step through the door of Robinsons next door – another magnificent time warp experience with its richly tiled floor and lustrous bar. For any weekender, Titanic Belfast is a must-see, picking up numerous awards

and plaudits since it opened in 2012. It's not hard to see why, as this dramatic liner-like building tells the compelling story of both the great ship and the powerhouse city that built her – it's a profoundly moving journey through Belfast's people and past. We already know the food in Grand Central is good as our Irish breakfasts have been a treat. But dinner at Seahorse Restaurant takes things to a whole new level. As with every Hastings Hotels menu, provenance is central, and so we feast on local seafood, duck and venison, not forgetting a memorable sorbet. Final plate – a light-as-air soufflé – is, to our surprise, not a course too far. With the warm afterglow of a deeply satisfying and perfectly proportioned meal, we catch the lift back to our sky-high suite overlooking the glittering cityscape. Grand Central really is the top spot, the place to see Belfast – this city of rich heritage and bold reinvention – in a whole new light. LEST WE FORGET St Dunstan’s remembers – the school community comes together to honour the fallen

S

t Dunstan’s College annual Service of Remembrance took place on Monday 11 November 2024. The service was opened in the Great Hall with an opening prayer by Reverend Colin Boswell, which was followed by a reading of Anthem for Doomed Youth by Simon Stanford-Tuck, son of Dunstonian and World War II hero Robert Stanford-Tuck ('33) who was imprisoned in POW Stalaag III, immortalised in the film The Great Escape with Steve McQueen. Head of School, Yasmin, and Junior School Head Pupil, Toby, then delivered a powerful reading of MCMXIV by Philip Larkin. Following the Chapel Choir’s performance of Nunc Dimittis in A, Group Head Nick Hewlett read For the Fallen by Laurence Binyon. This year, the Last Post was delivered

A day earlier, St Dunstan's College Combined Cadet Force (CCF) attended the annual Lewisham Remembrance Parade, marking an especially proud moment as they formed a colour party for the first time. In full CCF uniform, the cadets marched alongside service personal and other community groups, paying tribute to the servicemen and women who sacrificed so much. Speaking about the parade, Contingent Commander Richard Davies said: ‘Leading their respective sections congratulations go to both the Coxswain and RSM who demonstrated great leadership and kept the sections marching in time. Special mention also goes to Imani and Alyssa who laid wreaths on behalf of the College after everyone observed a moment of silence, reflecting St Dunstan's deep commitment to remembrance and to instilling values of respect and service in the next generation.’ Next year, St Dunstan’s CCF will travel to Ypres, Belgium, to take part in the daily Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate Memorial. by Jasmine, before the wreaths were laid by representatives for the College community. This included Coxswain Oscar (CCF), RSM Eva (CCF), Asha and Bertie (Pre-Prep pupils), Alexa (Junior School Head Pupil), Simon Stanford Tuck (Dunstonian), Michael Stanford-Tuck (Dunstonian), Nick Hewlett (Group Head), Jade McLellan (Head of Senior School) and Laura Whitwood (Head of Junior School). During the First World War, more than 877 Dunstonians served in the forces, and St Dunstan’s suffered one of the highest percentage losses of any school in the country. Tragically 277 students and teachers lost their lives during the war. St Dunstan’s Rivers of Poppies display was once again installed at the front of the College featuring more than 750 poppies. The display is made up of two rivers of poppies hanging down the side of the front building.

“We aim to cultivate discerning AI citizens”

FUTURE PROOF Shelley Lance BD PGCE, headmistress of Feltonfleet, on embracing AI literacy

I

n an era where technology shapes our daily lives, understanding artificial intelligence (AI) has become crucial. As educators at Feltonfleet, we carry a profound educational and moral responsibility to lead the way in AI literacy. By prioritising this critical aspect of education, we empower our young people to engage thoughtfully and ethically with technology, while also being aware of its limitations and potential risks. Schools have a unique obligation to ensure that young learners not only become informed participants in the AI revolution but also cultivate a generation that respects human dignity and values human intelligence. At Feltonfleet, we strive to harness AI and prepare young people with the skills needed to thrive in a technology-driven society. Integrating AI responsibility into our curriculum is vital for equipping pupils with a nuanced understanding of technology. By fostering pupils’ capacity to navigate AI's complexities, we are encouraging them

to use it morally, with discernment, and for good with a strong moral purpose. Achieving school-wide AI literacy is a shared goal at Feltonfleet, one on which our entire community is aligned. This goal includes comprehensive staff training, parent workshops, and collaborative discussions with other leading schools and Ed Tech companies. By engaging everyone—from teachers to parents—we aim to cultivate discerning AI citizens who grasp the implications of technology on society. Currently, narrow AI is embedded in our adaptive learning programs, enhancing personalised educational experiences. We are also trialling generative AI applications for EAL pupils and those with special educational needs, measuring their impact on learning outcomes. This practical approach not only enriches our curriculum but also prepares students for a future where AI will play an integral role in all aspects of their lives. To further ensure our pupils understand the relationship between human intelligence and AI, we are developing an Intelligences Curriculum that emphasises the importance of both. Ultimately, our goal is to highlight the immense value of the human brain, metacognitive abilities, meta contextual awareness and emotional intelligence in this evolving landscape. Recognising human intelligence fosters empathy, ethical reasoning, and critical thinking - qualities essential for navigating an AI-driven world. At Feltonfleet, we are committed to nurturing these skills, ensuring our pupils are well-prepared for the future. A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s
