y stag do was truly horrendous for several reasons. Firstly, I was forced into a wedding dress before we started our train journey to Leeds. Once there the plan was to go to Headingly and watch England v West Indies in the cricket – but of course, this was the UK summer and it rained all day. Quickly, my best men (I had two, meaning double the pain) came up with a lengthy pub crawl plan, so by about 4pm I was already worse for wear. I didn't even make it to the nightclub finale that day, my brother drawing the short straw to somehow get me back to the hotel when both legs had stopped working. Then it rained again the following day.

I probably wouldn't have been spared the hangover agony, but perhaps Essex would have offered a lot more in the way of active fun, meaning my party would be distracted from buying me yet another shot. So, in this month of love, we asked Visit Essex to come up with their best ideas for stag and hen dos across the county. I read the piece with a tear in my eye.

VICTORIA AND CHELSEA

POWER of TWO

Essex mums Victoria Benn and Chelsea Meehan on their book that opens up on a child’s emotional development

Before the Christmas period got into full swing, a brand-new children’s book launched that caught Absolutely’s eye. Feeling It All was written by Essex mums Victoria Benn (mum influencer and wife to professional boxer Conor Benn) and Chelsea Meehan (creator of other Be You Kiddo books), and is a thoughtfully crafted guide that helps children aged 7-11 and their parents explore and understand emotions in a fun, engaging way.

The book is filled with activities and easy explanations surrounding all types of feelings, and how to deal with them – a real forward-thinking and child-friendly tool for parents and children alike to learn together. It o ers lasting value by helping children develop important life skills, making it an ideal gift for any parent wanting to support their child’s emotional development. With positivity swirling about the book, Absolutely headed to Brentwood to sit down with Victoria and Chelsea to find out what inspired Feeling It All, how they work together and if this could be the start of a long and productive partnership.

Q When did you two first meet and why do you think you hit it o ?

A Victoria: We first met through our husbands at church. From the start, we realised we shared so much in common, from our Christian values to our passion for supporting children’s well-

being. It just felt natural to connect. We both have a heart for empowering the next generation and creating resources that can truly make a di erence, so it was easy to see how well we aligned.

Q When did the idea of collaborating on a book first start developing?

A Victoria: The idea began to form during one of our conversations about the struggles children face today – especially around mental well-being. We both felt strongly that we wanted to create something meaningful, a resource that would have helped us when we were younger. That’s when the seeds for Feeling It All were planted.

Q Why the focus on emotions and feelings?

A Chelsea: Understanding emotions is such a key part of growing up, and it’s something so many of us weren’t taught to navigate. Emotions shape how children see themselves and interact with the world. By focusing on emotions, we hope to empower kids to process their feelings in a healthy way, build resilience, and foster stronger relationships with those around them.

Q Why did you start with the 7-11 age range?

A Chelsea: That age range is such a critical time. Kids are just beginning to develop a deeper understanding of themselves and the world, but they’re also facing new pressures – social, academic, and emotional. It felt like the perfect age to start equipping

them with the tools they need to build confidence and emotional intelligence.

Q How did you sit down and write the book? Did you have a particular process?

A Victoria: We approached writing as a collaborative journey. First, we mapped out key messages and themes we wanted to include, and then we broke the content into sections. We worked closely, drawing on both of our experiences and brainstorming how to make the content relatable and engaging for children.

Q How did you ensure the book was suitable for children to pick up and read?

A Chelsea: We spent a lot of time making sure the language was simple, relatable, and age-appropriate. We also included fun, interactive elements like illustrations

and activities to keep children engaged. Feedback from parents, carers, and kids themselves was invaluable in shaping the final product.

Q Can you give us an idea of the kind of topics covered?

A Chelsea: The book covers a wide range of emotions – from happiness and excitement to sadness, anger, and worry. We explore why we feel these emotions, how to process them, and how to express them in healthy ways. It also includes practical tools like breathing exercises and positive a rmations to help kids manage big feelings.

Q What has the feedback been like so far?

A Victoria: The feedback has been so encouraging! Parents and carers have shared how much the book has helped their children open up about their emotions. Hearing how the book has impacted families has been incredibly rewarding and motivates us to keep going.

Q What are you proudest of when you look at what you have created?

A Victoria: We’re proudest of being a voice for children and creating something that can truly make a di erence in their lives. Knowing that our younger selves would have benefited from this book makes it all the more meaningful. It’s something to make our children proud, a book they’ll pick up and use as a tool as they grow up.

Q How are you looking to develop your writing partnership? Do you have the next book already planned?

A Chelsea: Absolutely! We’re currently working on our next book, which is aimed at children aged 3-6. It’s an exciting challenge to tailor our messages to a younger audience, but we’re thrilled to expand the series and continue supporting children’s emotional well-being.

Q This aside, what else does 2025 have in store for you?

A Victoria: We’re focused on growing the reach of Feeling It All and ensuring it becomes a valuable resource in schools, homes, and communities. We’re also exploring opportunities to speak about mental well-being and collaborate with others who share our vision.

Q How long have you lived in Essex for now and what do you love most about it?

A Victoria: We’ve both lived in Essex our entire lives, it’s such a wonderful place for families. There’s a great sense of community, and we love how much there is to do with the kids – from outdoor adventures to cosy spots for family meals.

Q Is where you live perfect for families?

A Chelsea: Definitely! Essex is full of familyfriendly places and activities. It’s a mix of countryside charm and convenience, with plenty of parks, trails, and spaces where kids can explore and connect with nature.

Q Between you, can you pick 2-3 places you love visiting?

A Victoria: I love Calcott Farm Shop: it’s perfect for a family outing, with delicious food and a children’s play area overlooking beautiful fields.

A Chelsea: The Gru alo Trail in Warley, Brentwood: a magical outdoor experience for kids who love adventure and storytelling. And South Weald Park: the deer and ducks are always a hit with the kids, and the outdoor play area is fantastic.

Q Any new year’s resolutions for 2025?

A Victoria: Our resolution is to keep pushing forward with our mission to empower young children. Mental well-being is growing in importance, and we’re committed to spreading this message as far as we can.

FUN & GAMES

Why you should choose Essex for hen and stag celebrations

In this month of Valentine’s, we are moving the relationship on to the shenanigans before you tie the knot. By opting for a hen or stag get-together close to home, you can spend less time travelling and more time having fun. Visit Essex, the county’s tourism organisation, shows us that you don’t have to go far to find great places to eat, drink, stay and play.

The fun starts here

Energetic groups of hens or stags can get their thrills at Mayhem Paintball and Laser Tag in Epping. With 16 di erent battlegrounds, get kitted up and unleash your inner warrior while shooting or tagging friends at this outdoor venue. Paintball is the ultimate icebreaker if not everyone in the group knows each other, plus it is fun filled. Head over to Romford or Rayleigh and splash out hiring Oxygen Activeplay for exclusive use. Bounce your way around indoor trampoline parks with climbing walls and release your inner child. If you still have energy and want some more exhilaration, head to Chelmsford’s Air Hop for their giant air slides. Drop down the steep slides before flying high into the air and landing safely on a giant airbag. If you and your group want to test their mettle, Go Ape at Chelmsford or the Nuclear High Ropes at Kelvedon Hatch have what you are looking for. The tree-top adventures are bound to bring out a great spirit of camaraderie as well as build up a healthy bit of competition to see who can climb the highest or can brave the biggest reach. Go Ape o ers three adrenaline

inducing high rope courses suitable for most ages – it even has a Tarzan swing! At Nuclear High Ropes, attempt their brandnew Zip Trek experience, 13 zipwires through 500m of woodland and over water, as well as air rifles and knife throwing, for a truly competitive experience.

Good times in the cities

With friends and family coming from far and wide, a city centre break is a good choice. It o ers easy access for people travelling from further afield. Essex Stays at the Kings Head in Chelmsford is a perfect stag or hen accommodation choice. Just a quick bus or taxi ride from the city centre, the converted pub sleeps 14 to 22 people and has the option of a private chef to cater to your party’s needs. The rooms are spacious with plenty of room for pampering sessions so bring your lash and nail kits, hair curling tools and setting spray. If that wasn’t enough, the venue features a karaoke and disco room, a private cocktail bar, an outdoor hot tub and dining igloo! Whilst in the city, book an afternoon at Escape Live Chelmsford to challenge friends to an escape room adventure. Or head to Boom Battle Bar for cocktails, street food, axe throwing, AR darts, plus private karaoke booths.

For a city by the coast choose Southendon-Sea. There are some fantastic places to visit near the seafront, all within a stone’s throw of the world’s longest pleasure pier. Grab a famous Rossi icecream or a hot sugared doughnut, add in the rides and thrills of Adventure Island, and you have the perfect combination for stag and hen parties.

S outhend is also home to Escape Live, with themed escape rooms where you can work together to solve puzzles and get out of the room in 60 minutes or less. The Cli ’s Pavillion is the county’s biggest indoor concert venue that continues to attract the biggest names in music, theatre and comedy, and never fails to disappoint. Apart from all the entertainment, beaches, bars and restaurants, there’s a wide range of accommodation to choose from, such as traditional seafront B&Bs, to four-star selfcatering apartments like Pier View.

UTILISE YOUR CAPITAL GAINS TAX ALLOWANCE

Capital Gains Tax regulations o er an annual exemption, allowing you to make tax-free gains of up to £3,000 in the 2024/25 tax year.

TWIST Tantalising

The people behind the acclaimed Angelina Dalston are opening a larger site featuring their fusion of Italian and Japanese cuisine

Osteria Angelina – the new pasta and grill restaurant from the Angelina Dalston team – will open in Norton Folgate in March 2025. The new restaurant sees the team take on a bigger converted warehouse space on the border of Spitalfields, Shoreditch and the City. Founders Joshua Owens-Baigler, Amar Takhar and Laura Horta opened Angelina Dalston in 2019.

The much-loved neighbourhood restaurant gained critical acclaim for its creative tasting menus that take inspiration from Japanese and Italian cuisine.

Now Osteria Angelina will focus on their popular fresh pastas with a Japanese twist, as well as Italian and Japanese inspired

‘big cut’ Binchotan grill dishes. There will also be a list of more than 300 Italian wines and a Gran Bollito Misto served tableside. Embracing the traditional osteria style of northern Italy, the restaurant will o er a more relaxed dining experience, larger à la carte dishes and a faster pace. Envisioned as a versatile space, the restaurant will be suitable for anything from a quick pasta lunch to celebratory meal with friends.

“We’re thrilled to expand into a larger venue that has captivated us with its stunning architecture, providing an incredible platform to introduce the Angelina brand and Itameshi cuisine to a wider audience. Launching an accessible restaurant focused on handmade ‘wafu’ pasta has been a long-standing dream of ours, we can’t wait,” says Josh Owens-Baigler.

The ground floor 75-cover restaurant is centred around a large open kitchen and bar, with a mix of chef counter and table seating. Pasta making will be at the forefront of the show with guests able to watch the chefs in the kitchen and a pastaio at work in a glass walled section of the dining room. The restaurant’s comfortable, monochromatic design has been overseen by Anna Owens Designs, who has also created the restaurant’s bespoke tableware and furniture. The building itself is an expertly renovated Victorian warehouse, with all original features retained, and a 4-metre-high ceiling. On the lower ground floor a private dining room will seat up to 18.

Osteria Angelina’s executive chef Usman Haider has been with the Angelina team for five years and has worked with founder Joshua to create the new restaurant’s relaxed a la carte o ering. Sitting at the heart of the menu will be eight fresh

pastas which will change regularly. The focal point of the open kitchen will be the Binchotan fired grills delivering big grill cuts for sharing, from whole fish to ribeye steaks. A signature dish on the menu will be an Angelina take on the Italian favourite Gran Bollito Misto; served tableside from a traditional Bollito Misto carrello (trolley). A selection of smaller plates will see some Angelina favourites including Antipasti, Crudi and Fritti dishes.

The wine list will focus on Italy’s diverse landscape of unheralded indigenous varieties with unique historic stories. There will also be a selection of Sake curated by London Sake expert Masayo Nuttall. Cocktails will take a creative path similar to the food with flavours and ingredients from Italy and Japan. Guests can expect to find one of London’s most extensive grappa lists and a range of Japanese whiskies. The March opening can’t come round soon enough.

Bottom’s UP

Fall in love with Breaky Bottom: a sparkling tale in the South Downs

Tucked away in a secluded fold of the Sussex Downs, Breaky Bottom feels like the setting of a romantic novel - sweeping views, chalky soils, and an air of timeless serenity. It’s the kind of place where you might expect to stumble across a secret love letter, but instead, you’ll find something even better: exceptional wine.

Established in 1974 by Peter Hall, Breaky Bottom is a love story in its own right - a tale of passion, perseverance, and the occasional bit of moonlit pruning. Inspired by his French heritage and a deep appreciation for fine wine, Hall turned this hidden corner of the South Downs into one of England’s most celebrated vineyards. Today, his sparkling wines are as rich in character as the man himself and brimming with elegance.

Cupid’s Favourite TIPPLE

If romance had a flavour, it would taste like Bottega Spa’s Pink Gold Prosecco. Dr Nyla Raja looks into the aesthetics trends we can expect to see in 2025

Ahighly respected and much sought after skin specialist and cosmetic dermatology GP, Dr Nyla Raja has practiced medicine for over 20 years and has personally delivered over 200,000 treatments with exceptional results. Trusted by television personalities, well-known celebrity figures and some of the UK’s most familiar faces, she is considered to be one of the top cosmetic doctors in the country. Here she gives her insight into the top skincare and aesthetics trends to watch in 2025.

Dr Nyla says: “As we move into 2025, the world of aesthetics and skincare will continue to evolve. It’s not just about the aesthetic outcome anymore, but a holistic approach to maintaining skin health and longevity. Patients are looking for advanced, non-invasive treatments that enhance natural beauty and focus on long-term skin wellness. Below are some of the biggest trends in 2025.”

UNDETECTABLE BEAUTY

2025 will be all about 'undetectable beauty', where aesthetic treatments enhance your natural features without being visibly noticeable. The desire for subtle, natural-looking enhancements is at an all-time high. Patients are increasingly leaning towards procedures that deliver natural, 'undetectable' results. They want to look refreshed, not altered.Microlifting, skin tightening treatments, and injectables will focus on enhancing natural contours and improving skin tone.

DR NYLA RAJA

PREVENTATIVE AESTHETICS

Younger generations are increasingly focused on 'prejuvenation' – preventing the signs of ageing before they occur. Patients are looking for preventative treatments that preserve skin firmness and delay signs of ageing, without the need for more invasive interventions later on. Light peels, laser facials, and microinjectables will become key treatments.

ADVANCED SKIN TIGHTENING AND FIRMING

We’re seeing incredible advancements in skintightening technologies. These treatments o er non-invasive, long-lasting solutions that help patients achieve firmer, more youthful skin without downtime. Treatments like our bespoke Transformation Facelift™ use advanced technologies to target deeper layers of the skin, lifting and firming without the need for invasive surgery. In just a few sessions, we can help restore volume and improve skin texture, leaving you with a smoother, more youthful appearance.

Additionally, our Transformation Bodylift targets stubborn fat in specific areas, to contour and reshape the body and build muscle for men and women. The treatment program combines di erent technologies bespoke to individual needs,

and leaves patients feeling empowered, sculpted, and ready to step out with confidence. The images below show one recent case study with fabulous results. Using a variety of innovative technologies, Tone & Tite therapy addresses all five key causes of cellulite. By combining radiofrequency and acoustic wave technology, the treatment plan works on both the superficial and deeper layers of the skin to improve tone and texture, delivering long-lasting results without downtime.

“As we head into 2025, there is a focus on a holistic approach to maintaining skin health and longevity”

Carly Glendinning tries FOLD, a brandnew at-home foldable reformer bed

R.A.D®

As versatile as they are stylish, the R.A.D ® ONE trainer is cushioned for plyometrics, stabilised for li ing, durable enough for rope-climbs, light-weight enough for gymnastics – all whilst being comfortable enough to wear as a daily trainer, £130. rad-global.com

Reformer Pilates has massively blown up in the past year, with studios popping up faster than you can say “upside down elephant”. Some are so exclusive, you have to get up at the crack of dawn to book a space, and it’s not uncommon for a single class to set you back £30. Taking place on a bed-like machine, we’re all crazy for the full-body workout – which promises strength, flexibility, coordination, and a honed physique. Getting out for classes isn’t easy though when you’re a toddler mum, so I’ve been practising Pilates every day at home instead. I’ve seen

great results on the mat, but recently I’ve been feeling ready to take my workouts to the next level. Enter the newly launched ‘FOLD’ reformer bed. Beautifully crafted from premium Canadian maple wood and upholstered in sleek beige or black leather, this seriously stylish piece of equipment o ers a studio-quality workout in the comfort of your own home. The compact design is a huge part of the appeal, and as the name implies, it’s easy to fold and stow away. My FOLD bed arrived pre-assembled and all I had to do was attach the head and shoulder rests, loop bars, and the padded double loop straps. Also included was a box, jumpboard and a starter bundle

with a Pilates mat, Pilates circle, Pilates ball, 1kg dumbbells, plus three months complimentary access to the FOLD app. The app features workouts for every level – from beginner to advanced. It’s super easy to use and the expert instructors make the workouts fun. There’s also the added benefit of being able to chat to other members of the FOLD founding community. I’ve been hooked from the get-go, and I’ve used my bed so much that I’ve actually hardly needed to ‘FOLD’ it away at all.

Original FOLD Reformer bed £1,899.99; access to the FOLD app £9.99pm after initial three months. foldreformer.com

ALICE CRAWLEY

ASIAN FUSION

Alice Crawley’s new rug collection for Layered takes inspiration from Hong Kong and Saigon, with a touch of the British country house

Arecurring theme for Swedish design brand Layered’s new collection by British interior designer Alice Crawley is bamboo. It’s a material Alice frequently returns to in her projects and which has become a signature in her design aesthetic. This fascination is clear in the collection’s patterns, where the bamboo silhouette has been integrated in two di erent ways – both as an elegant border and as a more abstract pattern.

Alice Crawley is a distinguished interior designer with a background in fashion from Saint Martin’s and 14 years of experience living in Hong Kong and Saigon. Her design philosophy is based on the belief that every room should have a unique character and life. Alice’s work is renowned for blending Western aesthetics with Eastern design, bringing originality and vibrancy to every space. “I remain inspired by the decade I spent living in Hong Kong and Vietnam,” says Alice. “The patterns and themes revolve around my love for all things chinoiserie and bamboo, blending Asian design elements with English heritage style. I have also taken inspiration from my beloved antique Chinese daybed, which has been reinterpreted as a border on our Indochine rug,” she adds. Together with Layered, Alice has worked to create a cohesive capsule collection that represents the Anglo-Asian style.

Alice strategically utilises the colour palette to create a balance of muted and bold tones. The colours have been carefully selected to bring life and character to each environment without overwhelming it.

“Throughout the process, I learned so much about weaving techniques and how texture can carry design details as beautifully as colour. I felt like a kid in a candy store when I visited Layered’s headquarters and showroom in Stockholm, diving into their fantastic colour library and feeling all the textures,” says Alice. “I spent a lot of time working with the colours, combining muted blues and pinks with rusty reds and woody browns to create a calm but distinct e ect that works in most settings.

“Designing my own rug collection has always been a dream, so when the opportunity to collaborate with Layered arose, I couldn’t let it pass,” she adds. “I’ve long admired their exceptional collections, commitment to quality, and their ability to o er accessible price points. Working closely with their design team was an incredibly rewarding experience. Together, we refined my ideas into a cohesive capsule collection that captures the

surrounded by bamboo forests, and the way the light shone through the bamboo shoots always mesmerised me. I used to think how amazing it would be to design a print or pattern based on this abstract and beautiful scene from nature.”

The collection o ers a rug for everyone, with interesting and usable colour combinations. From the calm and simple Indochine rug to the versatile Bamboo Stripe and the geometric Bamboo Forest, there is something for every room and occasion. For the Bamboo Stripe and Bamboo Border rugs, a cut pile was chosen for a sharp and clean finish. The Indochine rug has a contrasting border pattern of tufted loops in a slightly higher pile. “I’m thrilled with the end result of this collection, having journeyed from

“I felt like a kid in a candy store when I visited Layered's HQ”

essence of my style, blending South-East Asian influences with English heritage. Throughout the process, I’ve gained invaluable insights into weaving techniques and the importance of texture in design, as it can be just as impactful as colour.”

A major source of inspiration for the collection has been Alice’s memories from walks with her dogs on Sunset Peak in Hong Kong, where she passed a magical old Chinese house surrounded by bamboo forests. The light shining through the bamboo shoots inspired Alice to create patterns based on this beautiful natural scene. “It literally is like something out of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon,” Alice smiles. “The tea house is

moodboards to final samples to create rugs that feel both elegant and playful, bold yet calm,” Alice says. “While the designs make strong use of colour, they remain versatile and practical. My guiding principle was to avoid creating anything ‘too cool’ or overly arty; if I couldn’t envision how or where to use a rug in my own home or design projects, it simply didn’t make the cut. I believe there’s truly a rug for everyone in this collection. From the calm simplicity of Indochine to the versatile Bamboo Stripe, which could work anywhere, I’m confident these pieces will bring character and warmth to any space.”

INTRODUCING THE ICONIC COLLECTION

Imagine the serene and picturesque archipelago on the West Coast of Sweden. With the rhythmic whisper of the waves, the crisp sea breeze, and the wild heather growing among the rocks. This tranquil landscape was the inspiration for Börje Thuleskär, the founder of Carpe Diem Beds. On a balmy summer day wandering the Island of Stora Kornö, Börje spread out his picnic blanket on a meadow of heather to lay down and rest. As he closed his eyes, he experienced a floating sensation and a feeling of weightlessness. Since that day, that weightless feel is found in the comfort of

The Iconic Collection includes four bed models, each named after islands in the archipelago on the West Coast of Sweden. Hällsö Walnut consists of a handcrafted walnut frame, where the natural variations of the wood make each bed unique. The wooden frame’s timeless, classic charm elevates the bedroom’s design, emphasising the tailored quality of Carpe Diem Beds. The floating style of the centred leg piece further accentuates the walnut frame.

Hällsö Upholstery is a frame bed with an elegant, fabric-padded frame and the innovative floating design that defines this unique range. The frame seamlessly complements modern interior styles. Vindö adjustable bed is the existing and most exclusive bed in The Iconic Collection. Vindö o ers a luxurious, floating design synonymous with the rest of the collection. This adjustable bed allows you to control your body’s position and indulge in relaxing massages, making it a one-of-a-kind experience. With the added convenience of a light feature, Vindö is the epitome of luxury and comfort, setting a new standard for adjustable beds.

Carpe Diem Beds has launched new fabrics as well as the brand’s first collaboration with Danish textile brand Kvadrat. The new fabrics are inspired by the calming colours found in Lysekil’s archipelago and feature 22 exclusive designs. Altogether, Carpe Diem Beds now o ers 44 bespoke fabrics from Designers Guild, Romo Group, and Kvadrat, enabling customers to personalise their beds further. The new additions elevate Carpe Diem Beds' existing fabric brand mix and allow the brand to cater to a broader design audience who are looking for that Scandinavian feel.

DINING DESTINATION

Absolutely goes behind the scenes of a recent project in Loughton by Bakehouse Kitchens

This client commissioned Bakehouse Kitchens to design a space that echoed the modern yet timeless design of their Loughton home, while encouraging gatherings and enjoyment. Great technical skill was required to create continuity and flow from the existing features of the house into the kitchen, while mastering intrigue. Bakehouse had to ensure the horizontal mid rails of the cabinets architecturally lined up with the custom made Crittall doors. These small details have great impact and require precision in design and manufacturing to achieve the desired appearance.

The client wanted a practical space that had natural flow and was also great for socialising. To achieve this, Bakehouse designed an impressive five-metre-long island, looking like a freestanding piece of furniture. The island adds fluidity and movement to the space, while providing ample storage for crockery and larger items to maintain a sleek appearance.

The island also mirrors the shape of the ceiling co er which is fitted with discreet lighting and houses the main hanging lights for the room. This detail further emphasises Bakehouse’s attention to detail and ability to create bespoke designs that cater to each space.

To minimise clutter, two pantries were installed within the kitchen. Firstly, a built-in co ee and breakfast bar, with

“These are spaces with a high level of distinction and sophistication”

a fitted Zip Tap, was placed within the main frame of the kitchen for quick and easy access to everyday goods. This is supplemented with a larger pantry which is closed o to the main area and benefits from more storage, as well as a sink and Perrin & Rowe tap.

The ambition of the design was to show a classic kitchen with modern twists and Bakehouse worked hard to combine the two. Bakehouse’s Slim Shaker range was chosen for the base, and accents were added to create intrigue. The island features a textured Santa Margherita worktop, in Metropolis Grey, and the outer worktop are Apollo Quartz. The bulkhead above the cooking station features a collage of iridescent peal tiles, adding elegance and a focal point to the room.

Founded in 2008, the team at Bakehouse have a unique understanding of the need for a kitchen that truly is the heart of your home. Their wealth of knowledge allows them to work seamlessly within any timeframe and create beautiful, accessible spaces with a high level of distinction and sophistication. They produce both traditional and contemporary kitchens with sublime architectural detail, sympathetic to the property and its surrounding.

Founder

Alan Ramm has always had a passion for designing high-quality furniture using authentic and time-honoured techniques. Celebrating the provenance and quality of luxury English design has been central to the Bakehouse mission from day one, always drawing on the traditional methods of joinery to create exceptional quality, longlasting furniture with enduring style. Alan and the Bakehouse team aim to integrate traditional English carpentry methods into all bespoke projects to ensure a perfect balance between the old and new, shaping spaces that are expertly crafted to suit modern life.

RECHARGE TIME TO

It’s a new year, so no better time to improve your sleeping habits, say the experts at Jensen Beds

Whatever 2025 holds in store for you, sleeping is essential for your well-being. Just like you want your phone to be at 100 percent in the morning, your body should also be recharged to meet a new day. And where to start to get back to 100? Consistency. Our bodies are smart and easily adapt to new patterns. So, one way to optimize your sleep is to aim for consistency. It improves the body’s repair process each night, both physically and mentally. Going to sleep and waking up at the same time every day, even on weekends, could actually prevent mental health issues and depression. Here are five tips to help create a healthy daily rhythm

which will make your nights better and allow you to perform better during the day.

1.GET INTO REGULAR HABITS AND STICK TO THEM

Have fixed times for going to bed and waking up, eating breakfast, taking a walk in daylight and eating an evening meal.

2. SLEEP LESS, BUT BETTER

Try sleeping less for a period to avoid lying awake in bed. If, after this, your sleep is more uninterrupted, try going to bed slightly earlier every night until you get into a good sleep rhythm.

3.USE THE DARK

One hour before bedtime you should dim the lighting and turn o all screens such as TVs, computers, e-readers and

smartphones. The light tricks the brain into believing it is day. You enhance the body’s daily rhythm if you use the night to sleep, and the sooner you fall asleep, the better.

4.USE

THE LIGHT

Turn on the light in the morning, open the curtains and take an early walk in the daylight. This will give your body’s internal clock a good start to the day.

5.DE-STRESS

Remove the stresses of everyday life in di erent ways. Prepare for the following morning by putting out clothes and packing a backpack or case. Rest and read a book or browse a newspaper. A shower or a massage can also work wonders.

Jensen Beds’ mission is to help people sleep better, so they can perform at their peak. For more than 75 years, they’ve strived to make beds that adapt to your body and increase the quality of your sleep. But they don’t stop at making quality beds. They o er you a complete range of accessories and products, together with the routines that improve your sleep health. This includes guiding you to better habits throughout the di erent phases of your wake/sleep cycle: Wake-up, Awake, Wind down and Asleep. Get in touch with them and find out how you can sleep well.

SPLASH MAKE A

Origin on the top trends in indoor pool design for 2025

As we move into 2025, indoor pool design continues to evolve, embracing cutting-edge technology, sustainability and functionality. In this article, we explore the top trends we’re seeing for indoor pools and how Origin integrates them to elevate your lifestyle and home.

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN

At Origin, we understand that sustainable design isn’t just about using eco-friendly materials – it's about building energye cient pools that are cost-e ective and better for the environment.

One of the main ways sustainability is making its way into indoor pool design is through using heat pumps and solar panel systems to reduce energy consumption. These systems provide year round heating without relying on traditional fossil fuels, making them more energy-e cient and environmentally friendly. Additionally, materials used in pool house construction, such as timber from certified forests, contribute to an overall greener approach to design.

MOVABLE POOL FLOORS

One of the most innovative features in indoor pool design is the Hydrofloors movable pool floor system, which allows homeowners to adjust the depth of their pool at the touch of a button. This technology’s versatility allows your pool to double as a functional space for other activities. When the pool floor is raised, you gain a walkable surface for various uses – be it an entertainment space for gatherings, a yoga room or an extra play area for children. This adaptable design maximises space and keeps your pool area functional, no matter the occasion.

WELLNESS INTEGRATION

Wellness continues to be a focal point in swimming pool design, resulting in an environment that promotes health, relaxation and rejuvenation. Saunas and steam rooms, with their therapeutic e ects and soothing properties, provide a complete wellness experience that reduces stress, improves circulation and enhances muscle recovery. These additions elevate your pool house into a sanctuary.

At Origin, we’re excited to bring these innovations to life, creating pool houses that cater for every aspect of your lifestyle. Whether you’re prioritising energy e ciency, enhancing your wellness routine or embracing innovative design, we are here to help you create the pool of your dreams. Let’s make your vision a reality with an indoor pool that works seamlessly with your life. Limited building slots remain for 2025.

“I want to help people heal and embrace their true selves”

Finding Beauty in the Broken

Dunmow-based Charlotte Lewington is an experienced children's mental health and wellness advocate. Here, she writes about how her story sparked the creation of Mente Hermosa CIC

Growing up, I faced my share of challenges – experiences that left their mark. Yet, adversity shaped me into the resilient woman I am today, leading me through a journey of transformation and purpose. From bullying to personal losses, each experience impacted my self-confidence and sense of worth. Instead of letting these experiences define me, they became the foundation for my resilience.

From a young age, I grappled with feelings of self-doubt, confusion, and loss. I often questioned my worth and struggled to find my place in the world. As a child, I felt isolated, not realising these challenges would someday shape the compassionate work I would do. Today, these memories serve as my guiding light for Mente Hermosa CIC, a community interest company I founded to help people heal, embrace their true selves, and cultivate mental well-being. Though my journey was complex, I

found strength in education and built a professional career. I poured myself into learning, eventually achieving a master’s degree and thriving in roles within the NHS and other positions supporting children and young people. Working with individuals whose stories mirrored my own, I realised I wanted to create something transformative – a support system I would have wanted as a child. And so, Mente Hermosa was born.

The name means "Beautiful Mind, Beautiful You" and is deeply personal. It reflects my belief in each person’s innate beauty and worth, regardless of their past. Through the CIC, I want to o er a safe space where people feel seen, valued, and empowered to heal. Mente Hermosa is more than an organisation; it’s a movement, built on the belief that healing and growth are possible for everyone with the right support.

My personal story helped me understand the profound impact Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) have on individuals. I’ve experienced first-hand how trauma a ects mental health, relationships, and

self-perception. I also realised that true healing involves more than surface-level issues; it requires a nurturing environment that empowers individuals to recognise their strengths and build resilience.

This understanding drives Mente Hermosa’s mission: to help individuals work through limiting beliefs, recognise their strengths, and cultivate self-love.

Our trauma-informed approach serves everyone touched by adversity – not just parents and children, but anyone seeking self-understanding and healing. I’ve infused my experiences into every aspect of our services, from workshops and retreats to assessments and training programs.

A key initiative is our ACEs scheme, "The ACE Entrepreneur". This supports individuals who have experienced childhood trauma, empowering them to achieve personal and professional success. Through workshops, coaching, and networking, we build a resilient community where people find purpose and support.

We also o er assessments for children, families, and individuals, covering areas like

ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and trauma responses. These personalised assessments o er insight, helping people better understand themselves or loved ones and guiding them toward healing.

One of the greatest compliments I receive is when people say, “I wish I’d had someone like you when I was growing up.” It’s a reminder of Mente Hermosa’s purpose: to be the support network, guide, and advocate I needed during my own di cult times. We bridge the gap in mental health support, providing early intervention and practical resources that make a real di erence.

Research shows that mental health issues often begin early in life, with half emerging before the age of 14. Yet resources for early intervention remain limited, with long waiting lists. We fill this gap, helping to provide safe trauma-informed environments.

When families come to us after long waits for assessments or support, I see the relief in their faces. We o er more than answers; we create a space where people feel understood and empowered. By educating families on neurodivergent conditions and the impacts of trauma, we help them not only support their children, but also strengthen their family bonds. Looking forward, I envision Mente Hermosa CIC as a global platform for

mental health awareness and trauma-informed care.

I hope to speak on stages worldwide, lead international retreats, and train advocates for ACEs. I want to build a community where people feel empowered to overcome trauma and lead fulfilling lives.

My goal is to build a legacy of healing and empowerment, reminding people they are enough, they are loved, and they can find beauty and strength within themselves. We are much more than just a company – we are a beacon of hope, a reminder that healing is possible, and a testament to resilience.

We strive to help people feel truly seen. We want everyone to realise that their past does not define them. And with the right support, they can heal, grow, and embrace their own unique beauty. I know what it’s like to question if you’re enough – that’s why I’m here to show people they are.

At Mente Hermosa CIC, we believe everyone deserves to feel beautiful,

inside and out, and know they are worthy of love and acceptance. Through our journey, we’ll continue making a di erence, one beautiful mind at a time.

“Young people are more likely to be talking to each other – we need them to be really good advice givers”

Let’s talk

Helping young people to recognise and avoid unhealthy relationships is a challenge but we need to start the awkward conversations early, says domestic abuse expert Paula DeVaux

Dtomestic violence accounts for what percentage of violent crime? Answer: 41%.

This, along with 11 other hard-hitting questions, is part of a multiple-choice quiz designed by the teenage relationship education programme Escape the TRAP. Other quiz questions focus on behaviour young people are more aware of. For instance: 'One in three teens say they are text messaged how many times an hour by a partner inquiring where they are?'. The answer: 30 times an hour. While the first statistic is obviously shocking, the second is also a loud alarm bell. “Coercive control is the bookend of domestic abuse. You’ve got coercive control within the relationship and then post break up the risk of stalking,” says Paula DeVaux. “If people are waiting for that first incident of violence, we are missing

all those incidents of coercive control.”

She says we need to let young people know how such obsessive behaviours work. “There is always a pattern, and the pattern is always coercive control. Extreme jealousy and checking up on someone –those are the triggers, the warning signs, for our young people to recognise.”

Paula knows a lot about relationships that turn dangerous. She is a former probation o cer who specialised in helping to rehabilitate domestic abuse perpetrators. During her career in the service, she also supported victims and children and was seconded to train front-line professionals across Norfolk. These days, she delivers training in the public and private sectors, and that includes workshops and talks within independent and state schools. She’s also a facilitator for specialist programmes, including Escape the TRAP, the eightweek course designed by psychotherapist Cathy Press (TRAP stands for Teenage Relationship Abuse Programme).

Working to support young people has become a big part of Paula’s professional life, but she also has personal motivation as witness to domestic abuse throughout her childhood. This was not something she revealed during her earlier career, but now she sees it as something of a superpower, especially when it comes to reaching young people.

She is particularly concerned by the mixed messages children and teenagers face – both in popular culture and on social media – alongside the negative impact of the Andrew Tates of this world. “Our young people are saturated with this. He’s just one of many when we look at all the unhealthy and harmful influences. It’s important that we explore this with our children and give them the opportunity to talk about it.”

As well as the risk of modelling the bad influences they see there is, of course, the perennial issue that many young people will, at some point, gravitate to the loudest voice in the room – often the

bad influence. “Children are attracted to someone who’s a someone. We need them to know that being respected isn’t being feared.” Then there’s understanding the di erences between care and control within relationships – especially romantic ones. “There’s a massive confusion between jealousy and love which our young people have – a 'well, you can’t love me enough if you’re not jealous'.” So, the 30 texts in an hour question from that Escape the TRAP quiz is really pertinent to this age group.

Just as young people confuse jealousy and love, they are (like adults) often quick to victim blame while excusing the perpetrator. “It’s important that we support young people to recognise that it’s not about mental health, substance misuse, ADHD –it’s not caused by those things. Those things might make it worse, but none of those things cause domestic abuse,” says Paula. “If we collude with that then we are doing a real disservice to all of those people that are dealing with those issues on a regular basis. There are lots of people that have had those experiences and have never been abusive or violent in their relationships.”

Explaining that there’s never a justification for abuse is vital. So too is

clearing up the misconception about what an abuser is like. In her sessions with young people, she often explodes the preconceptions by pulling up a slide showing baddies from famous films. She then goes on to explain that perpetrators are individuals who look and sound like us. They come from all walks of life, and they may be male or female. What they have in common is this set of controlling behaviours we can spot.

While Paula’s sessions with children focus mainly on the teenage plus age group, she delivers age-appropriate advice to all ages. For younger children, the advice focuses on friendships. “When I go into primary age schools – and I talk to children as young as reception age – I talk to them about what being a lovely friend means. What does that look like and what does that feel like? If we get that foundation right, that paves the way for all those other relationships to come,” she says.

“If anyone in your life makes you feel sad or bad, they’re not your person – and that’s what I teach. The

people in your life that are your go-tos, they are your biggest cheerleaders.” The importance of these conversations is in teaching young people to recognise their own worth – their right to be who they are – and also to help each other recognise toxic situations. “Peer acceptance is a huge deal, and young people are more likely to be talking to each other before they talk to an adult about any of these issues, so we need them to be really good advice givers to each other.”

25% OF GIRLS AGED 13-17, and 17% OF BOYS, have experienced physical force in a teen relationship. 72% of girls and 51% of boys have experienced emotional violence, including constantly being ‘checked up on’. University of Bristol and NSPCC 2009 research

While young people may not understand the complexities of coercive control behaviours, they are well able to understand the principle that no friend should tell them what to wear, eat, say or do. “I let them know that if you’re ever doing anything because you think you should or you have to, not because you want to but because you’re worried if you don’t there’s a consequence and you’re scared of that consequence, then that is not OK. That’s the moment where often they’ll be looking at each other or looking down – you can see those lightbulb moments.” She never forgets that in any setting the early intervention may help both potential future victims and perpetrators change course.

Di cult though it may feel, especially when we want to protect children and stop them growing up too fast, Paula counsels parents to start the conversation early, and to keep dialogue going. “Don’t avoid those awkward conversations and think they are too young for it. They are not. And if we don’t talk about it, they’ll go to social media or Google.” Meanwhile, she believes every school should provide a specific programme to help children navigate those first romantic relationships in safety and with their self-esteem intact.

“It’s a life skill – I’d argue it’s as essential as learning how to swim.”

Smarter TESTING

Launched in September last year, Talamo is a dyslexia screening test that is a ordable, scalable and accurate – a game changer for earlier diagnosis

Jamie Wace had a patchy time in education and then, at 15, he got a private dyslexia screening test at the suggestion of his school and discovered he had dyslexia. He says this was a “Genesis moment” that changed his own approach and educational outcome. “My motivation was really poor, so I didn’t work very hard,” he says. But once he knew he was wired a bit di erently, it changed his mindset. “I took charge of my own learning.”

Fast forward a few years and Jamie was thriving in Fortune 100 companies working in technology. Then he stumbled back across dyslexia as a topic and, when he looked at the technology still being used in the field, he felt there was potential to do things di erently and improve outcomes for young people and their parents, while also supporting hardworking schools and their SENCO teams.

One huge problem identified was the cost and availability of testing – waiting lists are long and assessment tests typically range from £350-£1,000. These

two factors mean many children don’t get checked as early as they should, and this a ects self-esteem and school success. There are also those who may be harder to spot – as Jamie could testify from his own late diagnosis. “One statistic jumped out at us – which is that 80% of dyslexic students don’t have their diagnosis before they leave school,” he says. “This was a bit of a lightbulb moment.”

He and co-founders Sophie Dick (an entrepreneur with a background in designing for companies such as Delta Air Lines and BMW) and Leo Dick (design, data and product whizz

“It’s trying to take something that was reserved for the few and put it across as a universal right”

with past clients such as Dyson and the British Museum), then began the process of redesigning screening to be faster, cheaper, accurate and scalable.

The process has taken two years and, on the way to launch, Talamo was tested on 1,400 UK children across 18 partner schools, including two specialist dyslexia schools. Results so far show a 94% accuracy rate.

The Talamo screening tool is fully digital and uses content adapted from formal assessments, including Riverside Insights Woodcock-Johnson, with whom Talamo developed a strategic agreement, plus proprietary assessment material. “We’ve adapted a lot of that test and included some of our material as well as it has to be used in a fully automated session.” AI plays a

big part, enabling fast personalised recommendations at the end of the test.

The ideal, says Talamo, is for the test to be taken in a whole-class session led by a school under exam conditions to ensure accurate results (and no cheating). With this approach, the cost of the test is typically around £12 per child. Some parents may wish to get the screening test outside a school setting with their child – currently, this is £69, but Talamo aims to reduce an individual test to £50 over time.

The test is ideally taken in Year 3 or 4. “We’d test even younger, but we wouldn’t feel confident with those results,” says Jamie. Senior school entry at 11 is another obvious testing point, but the screening can be undertaken at any age from 7-16. What’s important about the design of Talamo is that it’s easy for the children to use – clear and engaging screens and instructions, also not too long a test – and the report generated is aimed at the lay person, not specialist. “We describe it in plain English.” The aim is, of course, to make it clear for parents, as well as teachers and SENCOs and, while highlighting the dyslexia risk is the critical thing, the report generated also includes useful learning profile information – visual reasoning, verbal reasoning, processing speed, and so on – and easy-to-follow guidance on what to do if a learning need is flagged.

“Most children will get something and, even if they’ve scored really highly, they still get some metacognitive guidance,” says Jamie. He believes this is really important, as many of the elements in the cognitive profile and follow-on recommendations are areas where small adaptations and more awareness may make a sizeable di erence. Just as important, children get insights into their own style as learners. Instead of feeling stupid when they can’t seem to grasp something everyone else in class gets, a child can recognise that it’s just a specific need they have as a learner – such as a working memory issue – and then they can be helped (and help themselves) to find a workaround. “I see it a lot of the time when the kids take the test. A lot of the time it’s a motivational issue, and a lot of that is tied to their self-esteem.”

Talamo is still in the post-launch phase, so Jamie says he and his cofounders are looking forward to feedback from children and teachers so they can further improve the test. He believes it’s the scalability that’s important, and the fact that it may potentially make life a lot easier for children and SENCOs. “The main thing for us is the accessibility aspect of it, it’s trying to take something that was previously reserved for the few and try to put it across as a universal right for everybody.”

The game A

A

surprising number of students choose their A-levels unaware of the longterm impact on future study and career if they get it wrong,

writes Jess Harris

Lily is doing the wrong A-levels. A Year 13 student at a leading girls’ school, she has realised that the subjects she has chosen aren’t right for what she wants to study at university. When she took her GCSEs, she was keen on humanities and textiles and opted for history, psychology and fine art for A-level. But she now realises she wants to study something to do with Life Sciences and she can’t do that without biology A-level. She is not alone. Which, the UK consumer choices group, reported that

28% of more than 1,000 university applicants aged 18–19-years-old said, when surveyed, that they wished they had chosen di erent subjects. And only half of students surveyed felt well enough informed about how the subjects they had studied could a ect their choice of degree and university.

“It would be really helpful if our education system started with the desired university degree and worked backwards,” says Amelia Buckworth at Quintessentially Education. “If we started with where students want to end up, we could ensure they have clear academic pathways. Instead, students

“ASK

ADVICE ON HOW TO KEEP EVERY PATHWAY OPEN”

narrow their subjects in Year 9 when they choose their GCSEs and again at A-level.”

Of course, some students know early what they want to study at university, but many others are unsure. Even for students who have a clear idea of where they are heading, Amelia advises doing the research. “Di erent universities and courses have distinct subject requirements. Being aware of these di erences early on will help ensure that students' chosen GCSE and A-level subjects do not become a barrier to pursuing a certain academic interest, or a particular university.” For example, a BSc in Economics at LSE requires an A* in Maths, but a BA in Economics at SOAS does not.

By far the largest number of A-level students we support are those who dropped maths after GCSE without realising they needed an A-level in the subject to go on to apply to their desired STEM course at university. For those who are unsure when they embark on choosing GCSEs and A-levels, Amelia suggests keeping all options open. It helps to research a selection of subjects to gauge the entry requirements. It might also be wise to choose one or two ‘facilitating subjects’ –academic A-levels that top universities prefer.

For those students who have started A-levels and realised they aren’t the right subjects, it’s important not to panic. If you’re only a term in, think about switching just after the winter break. This is school dependent, but we have supported students who have changed an A-level subject after one term. Alternatively, if you have your heart set on a particular course at a particular university, you could explore taking on another A-level. “We only advise students to take four A-levels in particular circumstances,” says Amelia. “But if picking up a fourth helps you get on to the course you want to do, then it makes sense.”

It can also be a good idea to broaden your university horizons – there are so many courses to choose from, all with di erent entry requirements. Another option is foundation courses, which take up to one-year to complete, typically have lower entrance thresholds and may help get you to your destination point. These can be studied at a university or at another location (for instance an FE college), but are designed to help access university. Amelia doesn’t recommend banking on this route, but adds that successful completion enables many students to continue on to the course they are interested in. Most important of all is to do your research. “It doesn’t matter if you don’t know what you want to do at university, but make sure you get good advice,” says Amelia. “Ask your school for advice on how to keep every pathway open, and there is always secondary expert support available, too.”

Jess Harris is the Director of Quintessentially Education. See more at quintessentially.com/education

DO...

• Get honest teacher feedback on how you're likely to perform before choosing A-levels.

• Bear in mind those 'facilitating subjects' that keep more HE options open (History, Geography, English, Modern and Classical Languages, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths and Further Maths).

• Be wary of A-levels with overlapping curricula – for instance Business Studies and Economics – if you are taking three subjects.

• Consider Art or Music as a fourth subject, rather than one of your three subjects, if you’re unsure of your course direction.

DON’ T...

• Assume you will like a subject at A-level just because you liked it at GCSE – research the syllabus.

• Narrow your options by choosing subjects considered 'so ' by some universities. Examples may include General Studies and Global Perspectives.

• Take all new subjects – three, or even two, entirely new areas of study might be overwhelming.

• Avoid studying a Modern Foreign Language (for instance, Mandarin or Spanish) as one of your three core A-levels if you are already a native speaker – it may be seen as a 'light' option.

WORLD of OPPORTUNITY

Why more parents are choosing state boarding

State boarding is a gem that is being discovered by a growing number of families. With fees at schools such as Wymondham College significantly lower than the independent sector and exempt from VAT, academic results and facilities on a par or better than independent schools, more parents are getting savvy to the opportunities state boarding o ers. Providing extensive enrichment activities combined with high academic standards, and at an average cost of only £5,000 per term for full boarding, state boarding delivers something unique.

Wymondham College, graded ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted, is the largest co-educational state boarding and day school in the UK. The college is located in the heart of Norfolk countryside and welcomes students from ages 11 to 18, with a prep school for children from age

4 and boarding for children from age 9 to 18. The boarding house structure means students belong to a smaller community where pastoral and wellbeing support ensures every child is known and cared for, priding itself on being a home from home with specialist sta and a culture that is conducive to the family dynamic.

Wymondham College is graded ‘Outstanding’ in all 9 categories across its education and boarding provision. This reflects the high academic standards and achievements which are amongst the best in the country with students going on to study at Oxford, Cambridge and Russell Group universities.

The common question asked is how are fees at state boarding schools so much lower than the independent sector? Put simply it is because education is free and only boarding is payable, and many families are surprised to hear that the price point still o ers exceptional opportunities. Highlights across a year at Wymondham College

typically include trips to New York, Florida, Iceland, skiing in Austria, safaris in Kenya, as well as students learning to scuba dive in the onsite pool and achieving the PADI open water qualification overseas. This is in addition to weekly activities of Combined Cadets Force, Gold Duke of Edinburgh, paddle boarding, kayaking, horse riding, water polo, debating, baking and coding.

Sport is just as competitive and prestigious at Wymondham College as it is in the independent sector with students competing against independent schools at national level. Here sport is celebrated at a recreational as well as competitive level with access to elite sporting accolades.

Head of King’s Magna Middle School for Years 6-9, Joe Birchall, explains what’s new at the school

King’s Magna Middle School (KM), part of Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate in York, is best known for its state-of-the-art facilities, exceptional extra-curricular o ering, and its highly respected position as the main feeder school into the high-ranking QE College and QE Faculty schools.

From Year 6, it o ers a programme of individual support and study skills sessions to best prepare students for success at GCSE and A-level, the results of which are evident in how the two senior schools perform, with the combined percentages for 2024 at 78% A*/A at A Level, 73% Distinction in BTECs and 62% grades 7-9 in GCSEs.

The school seamlessly bridges the gap between primary and secondary education whilst allowing plenty of time for enrichment activities, of which there are over 100 available to students, including a huge variety of sport, creative arts, performing arts and academic clubs ranging from STEM to Mandarin. This year, Spanish, German, French, Public Speaking, Creative

Writing, Debating, Table Tennis, Spinning, and Fencing have been added to the vast curriculum enrichment programme, allowing students to take two of these options within their weekly timetable. KM is always looking to the future. Each year new opportunities are added to the curriculum options, of which students in Years 6-9 choose two choices to focus on each term. In Year 9, students choose an additional four ‘specialisms’ such as Business Studies, Computing, Design Technology, Home Economics and Photography. This year, three ‘higher-level challenge’ options have been added – two mathematics choices and one science. The science option allows students to take part in competitions to build and program robots and to design experiments that will be sent to space. This subject option allows students to work towards a Higher Project Qualification (HPQ), which stretches and challenges students through the requirement of independent research on a topic that becomes a written report, an artefact or a production. The HPQ is GCSE level and candidates are awarded the equivalent of

a short-course GCSE upon completion, which can also be used to apply for the nationally-recognised CREST Silver award. The maths-focused option is divided into two routes; ‘Stretch’ which pushes those that are academically gifted, and ‘Support’ which brings students up to a higher maths level. The ‘Stretch’ programme covers topics from the Level 3 Certificate in Mathematical Studies including analysis of data, personal finance, modelling and estimation, critical path analysis, project work, and cost-benefit analysis. Whereas the ‘Support’ pathway allows students to learn, and be examined in, the Level 1 Functional Skills Mathematics qualification and covers the use of number, the number system, the use of measures, shape and space, problem solving, and handling information and data, all of which will aid the transition to GCSE study.

On Saturdays, KM boarders can participate in the optional King’s Academy for Performing Arts or Queen’s Academy for Creative Arts. Alternatively, they can socialise and use the facilities across campus including the 25m swimming pool, recreational sports courts, the fast-food cafe, co ee shop, and games rooms. Each boarding house holds social events, and on Sundays, boarders can join exciting trips from city exploring, shopping and eating out to adrenaline activities and nature bathing.

LEAVING its MARK

Co-founder of Durden and Hunt, James Hunt, on a big change facing the property market

It has been a busy start to the year at Durden and Hunt with April’s imminent Stamp Duty rises a hot topic amongst both buyers and sellers. Stamp Duty, or Stamp Duty Land Tax in its full name, is a government tax paid by the buyer on completion and takes into account a selection of factors, from price to buyer’s position (first time buyer, home mover or ownership of more than one property), in order to determine the amount paid. Over the past few years there have been a number of changes to the scheme typically implemented to help keep the property market moving, including a Stamp Duty holiday during the pandemic in 2020/2021. As helpful as those were they seem to be a thing of the past with a number of not insignificant changes set to take place.

First time buyers, who have seen a nil rate threshold, where no Stamp Duty is paid, of a generous £425,000 will see this decrease to £300,000. According to Rightmove this suggests only 8% of homes for sale in London and 24% in the South East will be Stamp Duty free for first-time buyers from April. The nil threshold for home movers will drop from £250,000 to £125,000,

whilst an additional threshold band is due to be added for those purchasing additional properties, with no nil thresholds to benefit from on these.

After the initial thresholds the amount paid is determined by brackets, depending on the price of the property and position, from 2% to 12%.

This being said, it’s likely 2025 will remain a buyers market so it’s important to take into consideration these changes to Stamp Duty when determining your a ordability or indeed the price of your home, so why not speak to myself or my team to help outline your options.

The Essex International Film Festival

The county showcase of cinematic talent has a new backer, of the Hollywood royalty variety

The Essex-raised Hollywood star, Dame Helen Mirren, has given her support to the first Essex International Film Festival, which will take place across the county between 27-30 March.

Dame Helen has enjoyed a long and successful career on stage and TV, and she has also starred in over 80 films. Her credits include The Queen, Barbie and the upcoming Thursday Murder Club. Dame Helen’s support is a major endorsement for the festival.

The film industry in Essex is thriving. The festival is keen to shine a light on local and international talent, as well as highlighting established movie makers and emerging talent from across the world. The event will also be one of the first countywide film festivals in the UK.

Dame Helen was more than happy to throw her support behind the event. “I’m excited and proud that my home county of Essex will be hosting a countywide film festival,” she says. “The Essex International Film Festival will remind the film industry that we have a thriving and talented film industry right on the doorstep of London.”

Echoing Dame Helen's support is Charles Sharman-Cox, the festival director, who added: “Dame Helen Mirren backing the festival is a big confidence boost. She has unbelievable credentials starring on stage, TV and film productions. Plus, she’s from Essex and she recognises the real talent we have in the county. It’s an absolute honour to have Dame Helen on board, supporting the festival.”

The festival will take place at the Curzon Cinema and Mercury Theatre in Colchester, Electric Palace Cinema in Harwich, and the Chelmsford Theatre. The festival will also run at satellite venues in Rayleigh and Hadleigh. Shortlisted films will be revealed at the end of January. The Essex International Film Festival is supported by the Essex County Council Arts and Cultural Fund.
