LETTER Editor’s
ABSOLUTELY’S February issue highlights
Ihave a love (rather apt) hate relationship when it comes to Valentine's Day. When I was younger, at that age when my circle of friends suddenly discovered the female of the species, I hated the build up to the day as I never got a card. Not once (excluding the time my mum sent me one. I found out pretty quickly and was devastated, but mum meant well!). It was only when I actually was in a relationship that I received a card, but weirdly it didn't mean the same thing to me.
As I have grown older, Valentine's Day has had its ups and downs. My wife and I have been together for 20 years, so we have had some truly shocking nights out in the name of love (the restaurant that forgot our booking, then plonked us in the far corner, then forgot our order, stands out), but rather than getting jaded about it, we embrace it and always look to do something different to satisfy Cupid. Lucky, then, that Hertfordshire offers plenty of ingenious options to get that romantic feeling. From private hot tubs in the countryside, to taking to the slopes right here, Visit Herts show how you can fall in love with Valentine's Day all over again. There's plenty more to love in this issue too, from Joseph Millson's latest stage role, to the impending return of the Meetcute Festival later this year in Borehamwood. Heart Herts, indeed.

Full of LIFE
Joseph Millson, a Hertfordshire local for many years, on a fresh look at The Merchant of Venice and his own labour of love
JOSEPH HAS MIXED THE STAGE WITH BIG FILMS, SUCH AS STARRING ALONGSIDE JADA PINKETT SMITH IN ANGEL HAS FALLEN
Joseph Millson likes to be busy. It’s a matter of days since his run as Soames Forsyte at The Park Theatre has come to an end – “It was blooming extraordinary,” he says on that, “one of those once in a lifetime things” – and he’s full pelt into rehearsals for another critically acclaimed play, The Merchant of Venice 1936. “I’m not sure who I bribed but it’s paying o !” he laughs about his work schedule. “I saw this production last year and thought it was incredible, and important. I’m over the moon to be joining such a landmark piece of theatre.”
Back by popular demand following a sold-out run at the Criterion Theatre earlier this year, Shakespeare’s enduring classic is transported to 1930s East London against a backdrop of political unrest and the Battle of Cable Street. With the city on the brink of political unrest, fascism sweeping across Europe and Oswald Mosley’s British Union of Fascists threatening a paramilitary march
through the Jewish East End, strong-willed single mother Shylock runs a pawnbroking business from her house in Cable Street where Mosley will march. When charismatic, antisemitic aristocrat Antonio comes to her for a loan, a high-stakes deal is struck. Will Shylock take her revenge, and who will pay the ultimate price?
Tracy-Ann Oberman returns in the role of Shylock, and she also adapted the production alongside Brigid Larmour. Joseph steps in as Antonio for this new UK tour. “He’s a bit of a monster and I seem to be playing a lot of unsavoury, baddie types the older I get,” Joseph grins. “But it’s important to note that though the audience can judge him as a fascist and unpleasant, Antonio believes he is right and helping to save the world by being on Mosley’s side.” Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice has proved problematic over the years, with many seeing the role of Shylock as anti-semitic, but the story proves ripe to move into the 20th century. “It’s an absolutely brilliant fit for a play that had become problematic,” Joseph agrees when asked about the 1930s East London setting. “Embrace the problem, turn the unpleasantness up, framed properly so we can learn from it.”
Given his recent run at Park Theatre, and this impending UK tour, it’s clear the stage is a key driver for Joseph. “It’s the boxing ring for us actors, nothing quite tests you like it,” he says. But his screen work also impresses, with The Last Kingdom a stand out for Absolutely. “Oh I love The Last Kingdom,” he says delightedly. Is that a favourite screen role? “I’ve been so lucky, it’s impossible to pick one, but I recently had a great time shooting a thriller called The Amateur opposite Rami Malik. That’s out in April.” Also out and doing the festival rounds now is Signs of Life, which has been written and directed by Joseph. A labour of love? “Absolutely!” he excalims with a smile. “I wrote, produced, directed and did about 16 other jobs on it, from driving the minibus to making props. It was heaven to be in charge of things for once.
“THE STAGE IS THE BOXING RING FOR US ACTORS, NOTHING QUITE TESTS YOU LIKE IT”
“I was inspired by so many things, some short films we made and then a feeling of wanting to really explore grief and kindness and how helping others is the best way to help ourselves,” he explains about the story. “The lead character, Anne, attempts to shift her life by taking herself on holiday, but on arrival she meets with danger. A chance encounter with another solo traveller o ers her an unexpected solution and a chain of surprising events unfold between two strangers which will either heal or crumble them completely. It’s a heart stopping drama with a side order of romantic comedy, with a score by Oscar winning composer Anne Dudley.”
It’s plenty for Joseph, who lived in Berkhamsted for many years before recently crossing the border into Bedfordshire, to juggle, but he couldn’t be happier for what 2025 holds in store. “I will be following Signs of Life on its festival journey, chasing my adult children around the world, paying my rent and going for walks,” he smiles. There’s just enough time to add in another stand out stage role, too.

What does the new VAT changes in private education mean for separating or divorced parents?
By LINDA LAMB
When couples separate, an important consideration is the ongoing education of their children. If private education was agreed in the past or is an active consideration now, the recent government budget may result in a change of position. The imposition of VAT and business rates on private schools has already resulted in some smaller schools announcing closures. At the other end of the spectrum, a few of the a uent schools are passing the full increase on to the parents they know can easily a ord these higher costs. This leaves the middle ground where some of the parents have decided to put
their funds into the private education of their children and live a modest lifestyle. Traditionally, there were scholarships if prospective pupils have a particular talent such as sport, drama or academic, and reduced fees for talented pupils who cannot a ord full fees. With the increased financial pressures, private school fee reductions will likely end or be much reduced when divorcing couples finalise their finances. This is usually in a court order which is either by agreement, called a consent order, or by order of a judge after a contested court hearing. There may be provision in the order for the ongoing payment of school fees and all the additional expense of private education which includes uniform and school trips. With these likely increased fees the parent responsible for paying
them may no longer be able to a ord the costs, making a variation of the order a likely consideration. The sooner this can be discussed the better. If direct discussions are di cult the parents should use family mediation, when the finances of both parents would be considered to see if the school fees and extras are a ordable and to discuss what should happen if not.
If you are currently separating and considering private education, full financial disclosure is vital to consider whether this is a realistic long-term option. The court considers private education a luxury and will prioritise the basic needs of both parents before considering private schooling. Once in private education it causes considerable upset for children if they have to be removed at a later date because the school fees have become una ordable. In addition to leaving behind friends, favourite teachers, or losing access to beloved activities and extra-curricular opportunities, there is also the possibility that the new school does not o er the same subjects, leading to a change in courses. Family mediation is a useful method to have discussions about private education and consider the joint finances to check if it is a feasible and long-term option. LSL Family Law provides a variety of support services for divorced and separating couples, including mediation. Should you have concerns about these upcoming budget changes, you can speak with one of our highly trained resolution accredited solicitors who can provide you with support on potential next steps.

Unsure of the setting? Let the diamond inspire your proposal
Celebrate love this spring with a personalised approach to engagement rings, where the diamond takes the lead in designing a piece that’s as unique as your relationship.
Choosing an engagement ring is one of life’s most meaningful moments – a blend of deep emotion, timeless tradition, and personal style. With spring approaching, it’s the perfect time to propose, with the season’s warmth and romance setting the stage for a truly unforgettable experience. At Baker Brothers, they understand how important this moment is, and they’re here to guide you in creating a ring that not only captures the magic of your proposal, but also becomes a cherished heirloom for generations to come.
The heart of any engagement ring is the diamond itself. Opting for a loose diamond adds a special touch of romance and individuality to the process. Unlike choosing a pre-set ring, selecting a loose diamond allows you to create something that’s entirely your own, where every facet reflects your unique love story. Each diamond has its own sparkle, personality, and history. By exploring loose diamonds, you’re not just choosing a gemstone – you’re selecting the centrepiece of a lifelong symbol of your commitment.
At Baker Brothers, they specialise in loose diamonds, o ering a carefully curated selection to help you find a gemstone as distinctive as your love. Their expert team, all trained in gemmology, will guide you through the 4Cs – cut, clarity, colour, and carat – o ering a hands-on experience with a jeweller’s loupe. They believe in educating their customers, showing you how to evaluate a diamond’s brilliance, inclusions, and light reflection, making the selection process both personal and informed.
With their expertise and commitment to transparency, they ensure that you select a diamond that aligns with your
vision for quality, beauty, and budget; whether you’re seeking a flawless stone or a characterful gem with unique charm.
Once you’ve chosen the perfect diamond, the focus shifts to the mount, which not only frames and secures the gemstone, but also defines the overall design. The mount should enhance the diamond’s character and reflect the wearer’s style. Whether you envision a classic solitaire, a vintage-inspired setting, or a contemporary halo design, Baker Brothers o ers a wide range of options, all crafted with precision. They take care in every detail, from the choice of metal, whether platinum, white gold, or yellow gold, to the practicality of the setting for daily wear. They know that an engagement ring is more than just jewellery; it’s a lasting symbol of your commitment.
The season’s blooming flowers, soft sunlight, and love-filled atmosphere provide the perfect backdrop for one of life’s most important questions. Choosing Baker Brothers for your engagement ring brings added confidence to this special moment. With over a century of experience in fine jewellery, they are known for their expertise, exceptional craftsmanship, and personalised service. UNDETECTABLE BEAUTY
2025 will be all about 'undetectable beauty', where aesthetic treatments enhance your natural features without being visibly noticeable. The desire for subtle, natural-looking enhancements is at an all-time high. Patients are increasingly leaning towards procedures that deliver natural, 'undetectable' results. They want to look refreshed, not altered.Microlifting, skin tightening treatments, and injectables will focus on enhancing natural contours and improving skin tone.
DR NYLA RAJA
PREVENTATIVE AESTHETICS
Younger generations are increasingly focused on 'prejuvenation' – preventing the signs of ageing before they occur. Patients are looking for preventative treatments that preserve skin firmness and delay signs of ageing, without the need for more invasive interventions later on. Light peels, laser facials, and microinjectables will become key treatments.
ADVANCED SKIN TIGHTENING AND FIRMING
We’re seeing incredible advancements in skintightening technologies. These treatments o er non-invasive, long-lasting solutions that help patients achieve firmer, more youthful skin without downtime. Treatments like our bespoke Transformation Facelift™ use advanced technologies to target deeper layers of the skin, lifting and firming without the need for invasive surgery. In just a few sessions, we can help restore volume and improve skin texture, leaving you with a smoother, more youthful appearance.
Additionally, our Transformation Bodylift targets stubborn fat in specific areas, to contour and reshape the body and build muscle for men and women. The treatment program combines di erent technologies bespoke to individual needs,
and leaves patients feeling empowered, sculpted, and ready to step out with confidence. The images below show one recent case study with fabulous results. Using a variety of innovative technologies, Tone & Tite therapy addresses all five key causes of cellulite. By combining radiofrequency and acoustic wave technology, the treatment plan works on both the superficial and deeper layers of the skin to improve tone and texture, delivering long-lasting results without downtime.

FEED DRIP
Dr Suhail Hussain on how you can improve your wellbeing, one drop at a time
Intravenous (IV) vitamin drips have gained traction for their potential to rapidly deliver nutrients, directly into the bloodstream. These therapies are marketed for a variety of benefits, such as enhancing energy, boosting immunity, and supporting overall wellbeing. However, understanding the real pros and cons of such treatments is key to deciding if it’s something you should consider.
Currently most drips contain a mixture of vitamins and minerals. These can help you feel better in the short term, but are there any longer term benefits? Recently there has been increased focus other molecules, such as NAD+ and glutathione, which have far greater potential.
VITAMIN DRIPS
Pros
•Direct Absorption: By bypassing the digestive system, IV drips ensure 100% absorption of nutrients, making them particularly beneficial for individuals with certain deficiencies or absorption issues.
•Quick E ects: They can provide rapid replenishment of vitamins and minerals, often leading to immediate feelings of increased energy and well-being.
• Customisation: Drips can be tailored to individual needs, with specific combinations of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other compounds like NAD+ and glutathione.
Cons
• Emerging Evidence: The scientific backing for the widespread use of IV drips, especially in healthy individuals without deficiencies, is still limited.
• Potential Risks: Infection at the injection site, phlebitis, and possible nutrient overload or imbalances.
• Cost: Treatments are often expensive.
NAD+ AND GLUTATHIONE: KEY PLAYERS IN LONGEVITY AND VITALITY
NAD+ (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide)
- Health and Longevity Benefits
• Boosts cellular energy production, enhancing physical performance and endurance.
• Supports DNA repair, potentially slowing the aging process and extending lifespan.
• Improves blood circulation and energy metabolism.
•Promotes skin and hair vitality by
aiding cellular regeneration.
•Enhances metabolic functions, aiding in weight management and addressing metabolic syndrome.
Glutathione - Health and Longevity Benefits
•Acts as the body’s master antioxidant, reducing oxidative stress and supporting detoxification.
•Improves skin health, promoting a youthful appearance and reducing inflammation.
•Enhances immune function and liver detoxification.
THE IMPORTANCE OF TESTING BEFORE AND AFTER TREATMENT
Given the broad claims associated with NAD+ and glutathione, a critical aspect of using IV drips for these compounds is rigorous testing to ensure both necessity and safety, both before and after treatment.
CONCLUSION
Vitamin drips, particularly those delivering NAD+ and glutathione, o er a great promise for enhancing health, performance, and longevity. By adopting an evidence-based approach, individuals can better harness the benefits of IV vitamin therapy while minimising potential downsides. However, it is crucial to remember that no matter how good a potential treatment is, there is no substitute for improving your lifestyle through proper nutrition, physical activity, decreasing stress and most importantly good quality sleep.

INTRODUCING THE ICONIC COLLECTION
Imagine the serene and picturesque archipelago on the West Coast of Sweden. With the rhythmic whisper of the waves, the crisp sea breeze, and the wild heather growing among the rocks. This tranquil landscape was the inspiration for Börje Thuleskär, the founder of Carpe Diem Beds. On a balmy summer day wandering the Island of Stora Kornö, Börje spread out his picnic blanket on a meadow of heather to lay down and rest. As he closed his eyes, he experienced a floating sensation and a feeling of weightlessness. Since that day, that weightless feel is found in the comfort of
The Iconic Collection includes four bed models, each named after islands in the archipelago on the West Coast of Sweden. These bespoke beds can be customised from 44 fabrics in the classic and exclusive fabric collection. Kungsö is a continental bed that combines innovation with an elegant and modern design. It is not just furniture; it is a focal point that elevates the entire room’s atmosphere. The design is based on the centred leg piece, creating a floating visual e ect that is both striking and captivating, making it a truly exceptional piece of design.
Hällsö Walnut consists of a handcrafted walnut frame, where the natural variations of the wood make each bed unique. The wooden frame’s timeless, classic charm elevates the bedroom’s design, emphasising the tailored quality of Carpe Diem Beds. The floating style of the centred leg piece further accentuates the walnut frame.
Hällsö Upholstery is a frame bed with an elegant, fabric-padded frame and the innovative floating design that defines this unique range. The frame seamlessly complements modern interior styles. Vindö adjustable bed is the existing and most exclusive bed in The Iconic Collection. Vindö o ers a luxurious, floating design synonymous with the rest of the collection. This adjustable bed allows you to control your body’s position and indulge in relaxing massages, making it a one-of-a-kind experience. With the added convenience of a light feature, Vindö is the epitome of luxury and comfort, setting a new standard for adjustable beds.
Carpe Diem Beds has launched new fabrics as well as the brand’s first collaboration with Danish textile brand Kvadrat. The new fabrics are inspired by the calming colours found in Lysekil’s archipelago and feature 22 exclusive designs. Altogether, Carpe Diem Beds now o ers 44 bespoke fabrics from Designers Guild, Romo Group, and Kvadrat, enabling customers to personalise their beds further. The new additions elevate Carpe Diem Beds' existing fabric brand mix and allow the brand to cater to a broader design audience who are looking for that Scandinavian feel.

RECHARGE TIME TO
It’s a new year, so no better time to improve your sleeping habits, say the experts at Jensen Beds
Whatever 2025 holds in store for you, sleeping is essential for your well-being. Just like you want your phone to be at 100 percent in the morning, your body should also be recharged to meet a new day. And where to start to get back to 100? Consistency. Our bodies are smart and easily adapt to new patterns. So, one way to optimize your sleep is to aim for consistency. It improves the body’s repair process each night, both physically and mentally. Going to sleep and waking up at the same time every day, even on weekends, could actually prevent mental health issues and depression. Here are five tips to help create a healthy daily rhythm
which will make your nights better and allow you to perform better during the day.
1.GET INTO REGULAR HABITS AND STICK TO THEM
Have fixed times for going to bed and waking up, eating breakfast, taking a walk in daylight and eating an evening meal.
2. SLEEP LESS, BUT BETTER
Try sleeping less for a period to avoid lying awake in bed. If, after this, your sleep is more uninterrupted, try going to bed slightly earlier every night until you get into a good sleep rhythm.
3.USE
THE DARK
One hour before bedtime you should dim the lighting and turn o all screens such as TVs, computers, e-readers and
smartphones. The light tricks the brain into believing it is day. You enhance the body’s daily rhythm if you use the night to sleep, and the sooner you fall asleep, the better.
4.USE
THE LIGHT
Turn on the light in the morning, open the curtains and take an early walk in the daylight. This will give your body’s internal clock a good start to the day.
5.DE-STRESS
Remove the stresses of everyday life in di erent ways. Prepare for the following morning by putting out clothes and packing a backpack or case. Rest and read a book or browse a newspaper. A shower or a massage can also work wonders.
Jensen Beds’ mission is to help people sleep better, so they can perform at their peak. For more than 75 years, they’ve strived to make beds that adapt to your body and increase the quality of your sleep. But they don’t stop at making quality beds. They o er you a complete range of accessories and products, together with the routines that improve your sleep health. This includes guiding you to better habits throughout the di erent phases of your wake/sleep cycle: Wake-up, Awake, Wind down and Asleep. Get in touch with them and find out how you can sleep well.

Origin on the top trends in indoor pool design for 2025
As we move into 2025, indoor pool design continues to evolve, embracing cutting-edge technology, sustainability and functionality. In this article, we explore the top trends we’re seeing for indoor pools and how Origin integrates them to elevate your lifestyle and home.
SUSTAINABLE DESIGN
At Origin, we understand that sustainable design isn’t just about using eco-friendly materials – it's about building energye cient pools that are cost-e ective and better for the environment.
One of the main ways sustainability is making its way into indoor pool design is through using heat pumps and solar panel systems to reduce energy consumption. These systems provide year round heating without relying on traditional fossil fuels, making them more energy-e cient and environmentally friendly. Additionally, materials used in pool house construction, such as timber from certified forests, contribute to an overall greener approach to design.
MOVABLE POOL FLOORS
One of the most innovative features in indoor pool design is the Hydrofloors movable pool floor system, which allows homeowners to adjust the depth of their pool at the touch of a button. This technology’s versatility allows your pool to double as a functional space for other activities. When the pool floor is raised, you gain a walkable surface for various uses – be it an entertainment space for gatherings, a yoga room or an extra play area for children. This adaptable design maximises space and keeps your pool area functional, no matter the occasion.
WELLNESS INTEGRATION
Wellness continues to be a focal point in swimming pool design, resulting in an environment that promotes health, relaxation and rejuvenation. Saunas and steam rooms, with their therapeutic e ects and soothing properties, provide a complete wellness experience that reduces stress, improves circulation and enhances muscle recovery. These additions elevate your pool house into a sanctuary.
At Origin, we’re excited to bring these innovations to life, creating pool houses that cater for every aspect of your lifestyle. Whether you’re prioritising energy e ciency, enhancing your wellness routine or embracing innovative design, we are here to help you create the pool of your dreams. Let’s make your vision a reality with an indoor pool that works seamlessly with your life. Limited building slots remain for 2025.

Getting the light right in your bathroom: illuminating advice from Ripples
“Bathrooms need a mixture of task, atmospheric and decorative lighting”
ood lighting can make all the di erence in a bathroom space, but is quite often an overlooked part of bathroom design. Here we ask Jo, Senior Designer at Ripples, for her advice on getting the light right in your bathroom.
Q What are the key things to consider when planning bathroom lighting?
A The key things to consider when it comes to bathroom lights are: the style and size of the fittings, how your lighting will be controlled (be it a switch, sensor or even an app on your phone) and the various layers of lighting which you might like to include (from task lighting through to atmospheric lighting). If you take time to think about who will use the bathroom and how, you’ll be able to consider the various mixture of lighting options that will suit your requirements.
Q Where should you start when planning bathroom lighting?
Q What would you say is the perfect mix of lighting for a bathroom?
A I usually suggest a mixture of task lighting, atmospheric lighting, and decorative lighting to make sure your bathroom is equipped to suit a range of purposes and moods. Task lighting is great for applying makeup or shaving on dark winter mornings, as well as ensuring your bathroom is lit enough to be thoroughly cleaned. Contrastingly, atmospheric lighting helps create a sense of calm in the evening time and helps prepare the body for sleep. Decorative lighting o ers a chance to choose something beautiful which you love, adding a sense of personality to your space.
A A good place to start is to assess the amount of natural light available in your bathroom. Then, once the design process is underway, your bathroom designer can help suggest additional lighting options which will further enhance the room and create the atmosphere you’re hoping to achieve. At Ripples, we usually start with the task lighting as this often sits above your sanitaryware and helps to bounce light around the rest of the room. We then look to layer additional lighting sources, depending on the style and feeling the client wants to create.

Absolutely explores timeless country-style design in this Hertfordshire home
AHertfordshire homeowner with a love for distinctive, timeless style and a fondness for travelling has collaborated with interior designers Houblon House and bespoke joinery and kitchen specialists Bakehouse Kitchens to create a space which beautifully complements its natural surroundings. With a focus on designing a kitchen that echoes the aesthetic of the surrounding landscape, the area features natural materials, rustic blends of American country and European styles, and
carefully balances proportions and details to create a clean, open space.
Opting for a sophisticated country-feel in the kitchen, the design features Bakehouse Kitchens’ best-selling range, the Original Bakehouse Shaker painted in Farrow & Ball’s Ammonite. A large, striking island takes centre stage and features one piece of timber as the worktop, as well as storage, seating and an invisible hob helping to keep the aesthetic of the space clean.
Adding to the minimalist aesthetic, pocket doors have been created for the in-cabinet pantry, which houses glasses, mugs and a hot drinks station helping to keep the area clutter-free without feeling closed-in. Either side of the

large, arched window are cantilevering marble shelves, with specialist stone hand-selected from Italy; another nod to the homeowner’s love for both natural materials and travel-inspired design.
Creative director and founder of Bakehouse Kitchens, Alan Ramm, comments: “We’ve been working with the excellent Houblon House team for nearly 10 years and it’s always a pleasure coming together to create beautiful spaces for clients. We have a joint appreciation for bespoke design, handmade pieces and premium quality, always.
“Working alongside their interior designers Kim Menzies and Phoebe Phillips, we wanted the kitchen to reflect the rest of the house which they’d designed, so colour and materials were big considerations to ensure they blended in and there was a real sense of continuity throughout the whole house.”
Specialising in creating luxurious, tailor-made, handcrafted kitchens entirely sympathetic to the surrounding space and architecture, Bakehouse Kitchens produces truly bespoke kitchens
featuring a premium level of design distinction and unblemished quality.
Alan adds: “Our design team and craftspeople carefully consider every element so the entire kitchen is as bespoke as it can be. For example, the marble shelves were extremely heavy and required an expert level of engineering to ensure they were fully integrated into the wall – and it’s a wonderfully attractive feature now.”
Heavyweight interior designers, Houblon House, were selected to design the full home, injecting unique style in through touches such as curved top Crittall doors
and exposed stairways. Renowned for exquisite design, Houblon House regularly relies on Bakehouse Kitchens to take on projects’ kitchens thanks to its deep understanding in design continuity and ability to finish homes with the finest kitchens, complementing the duo’s work.
The Original Bakehouse Shaker range is available from Bakehouse Kitchens at a starting price of £50,000 (excluding worktops and appliances). See more at bakehousekitchens.co.uk

In the KNOW
Richard Stanley took on the Headship at Edge Grove School in Hertfordshire in October 2024. Here he talks about the school, its ethos and his passion for knowing and growing every child
Q You’ve recently taken on the Headship at Edge Grove what have the first few months been like?
A The school has journeyed into a few headwinds these past few months. Together with my leadership team, the primary focus has been on navigating a course aimed at finding calm. It has been a real pleasure to work with our amazing teachers and support sta as we’ve maintained an all-embracing ‘business as usual’ approach. My daily engagements with so many of our beautiful children, committed team of teachers and expectant parents have appropriately kept me people-centred for much of the time. This has given me many opportunities to develop the all-important relational connections that must underpin all that I will be responsible for and committed to in the months and years ahead.
Q Edge Grove prides itself on ‘knowing and growing’ every child – what do you mean by this?
A It is something of a cliche to say that every child is important and so deserves
to enjoy the same opportunities as other children around them. The reality, however, is if we are going to give each of them a chance to shine in their own radiance in ways that will celebrate all that they are and can become, then we must seek a deeper place of knowing. One that recognises in each unique individual profile of character traits, talents and skills that set them apart. Each distinctive profile enables us to find pathways and platforms of learning that will lead to growing every child in ways that will empower a true celebration of self within them. Self-belief, self-worth, self-confidence, self-actualisation come from being truly known and grown.
Q You are passionate about putting every child at the centre of everything the school does. What strategies has your school adopted to support this?
A Coming out of the previous ‘knowing and growing’ message, none of what is spoken about would be possible without a truly devoted team of dedicated teachers. As such, we are blessed to have men and
women who commit daily to deliver on our ‘child at the centre of all’ philosophy. They are supported by related strategies that include keeping class sizes no bigger than 22; finding within the academic delivery vital di erentiated teaching methods to suit each child; o ering a variety of co-curricular activities that give the children opportunities to explore and tailor enhanced learning that is right for them; and finding ways to spotlight each boy and girl in order to give each an appropriate ‘memory moment’ in front of the school.
RICHARD STANLEY
Q We live in a noisy, complex and diverse world today – how do you ensure that every child’s voice is heard?
A It is exactly because of and not despite the external influences of a complex and ‘noisy’ world that we need to be ‘tuning-in’ to the mental and emotional heartbeat of every child as much as we are able to. For this to happen meaningfully and without invading a child’s right for privacy, we must endeavour to intentionally make time to listen-in-order-to-hear individual voices. This requires us listening to and for subtle, honest intonations from a child that will open channels for trusted communication. Generation Alpha, labelled the anxious generation, must be encouraged to use their voices in harmony with ours and in ways that will safeguard their health and happiness.
Q You’re a bit of an education veteran with a long career in teaching – how does teaching in South Africa compare to teaching in Hertfordshire?
A One thing that one can always count on is that children are children wherever
they are found in the world. Thus, in the education context, the joy and pleasure of being in a place to connect with, celebrate and learn from them all is no di erent for me here in England as it was in South Africa. Di erences have been noticed, however, within the operational systems. Being designed around supporting and delivering on the chosen curriculum, in England it is done within a more integrated academic and co-curricular timetabled matrix. This means longer days are accommodated for children and teachers, there is a good deal more focus on data-capture, children are exposed earlier to a culture of reading, and there is a gentler sports o ering.
Q What are you most excited about for Edge Grove in 2025?
A With my role as Head comes, of course, the privilege and responsibility of working with the board of governors and my senior management team to consider and realign, where necessary, the school’s vision. There is much for us to consider and to recalibrate as we
visualise what Edge Grove will look like five years from now, and what our primary o ering points will be in order to remain relevant, cutting edge, and a first-choice prep school for prospective parents. An exciting milestone which is sure to provide much in the way of impetus for us to forge ahead, and a unique celebration opportunity, will be our 90-year anniversary during the 2025/26 academic year. It promises to be an exciting chapter for all who make up the school family.

Grand AMBITIONS
Beechwood Park Head Christian Pritchard discusses his extensive teaching background and why learning is not consigned just to the classroom
Q Before we talk about Beechwood Park, can you give us a potted history of your background in education?
A I completed a combined Honours degree in Teaching and Technology at York and started my career in UK state schools. After that, I moved abroad to work in a series of British International schools, starting in the UAE as a year group leader. I then became a Deputy Head and was promoted to Head at Taipei European School, Taiwan. My family and I then moved to the Netherlands, where I was Head of the British School of Amsterdam. Having completed a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership, I returned to the UK with my family and became Headmaster of Ranby House Prep School in Nottingham, a 3 to 13 day and boarding co-educational school. I then became Head of Beachborough School in Buckinghamshire, before joining Beechwood Park in Hertfordshire, which
is a larger 3 to 13 co-educational day and flexi boarding preparatory school.
Q When did you move to Beechwood Park and what originally attracted you to the school?
A I joined the school in September 2023. What originally attracted me to the school was the children and sta , the grounds and facilities, the potential for our excellent school to be exceptional, the core feeling of warmth and happiness, and our Woodlands Nursery, which is led by my wife, Zoe.
Q Do you have a particular leadership style?
A I would say that my natural leadership style is coaching, although I’ll happily use the full range and variety of leadership styles, including a liative, pacesetting and authoritative, when needed. I like
CHRISTIAN PRITCHARD
“AS KIND, CARING, INDEPENDENT, RESILIENT, ADAPTABLE INDIVIDUALS, OUR PUPILS ARE READY TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE”
developing high-performing teams that intrinsically put children first. I aim to help children and sta develop a positive, can-do mindset and a real self-belief in their own abilities, so that they are able to achieve and succeed at a level beyond what they might have believed was initially possible.
Q When someone first visits Beechwood Park, what do you think their first impressions would be?
A I would hope that, once they have taken in our beautiful main school building and impressive site, their first impression is one of warmth, excitement and happiness. Our children are genuinely our greatest ambassadors at Beechwood Park. You really do have to meet our children to experience first-hand how happy, warm and energised our school is!
Q If we happened to wander into a typical classroom, what would we find?
A I am not sure we have a ‘typical classroom’! Learning takes place everywhere at Beechwood Park, including in the beautiful grounds of the school and in our specialist rooms and classrooms. If you popped in, you would see lots of kind, caring, engaged, highly motivated, happy and enthusiastic girls and boys that are keen to work and learn together. Of course, you’d also see the brilliant sta that make that happen and create the ‘Beechwood Park Magic’!
Q How do you like your teachers to go about their work?
A With empowerment, support and challenge, but no unnecessary interference or bureaucracy. I like to appoint and work with sta that genuinely put the children first, that have a positive, cando attitude and an ability to understand children as individuals as they seek to help them to be the ‘best they can be’. I am always there to help, support and develop the sta team, but I also trust them to do their job. I aim to provide them with the autonomy and empowerment to make learning exciting and fun.
Q How important is the extra-curricular to developing your pupils?
A For me, this is critical in the development of our ‘world-ready’ learners and 21stcentury citizens of the future. With an extended school day that starts with a breakfast club and ends with an extensive after school clubs and activities programme, there is something for every child. The children learn a plethora of additional life skills through our extra-curricular programme, such as teamwork, leadership and creativity, and this provision also facilitates time with friends. With so many activities to choose from, it also means that parents are not ferrying their children to lots of di erent activities at the end of the day, as everything is conveniently here.
Q What are your pupils prepared for?
A Their next step in life! They will have secured strong academic, personal, social and emotional skills and knowledge and are ready for the next stage in their educational journey. In addition to that, our children are ready for life’s next adventure. As kind, caring, independent, resilient, adaptable individuals, they are ‘change makers’ and ready to ‘make a di erence’.
Q What else is to come in 2025?
A In 2025, Beechwood Park celebrates over 40 years of being the first and longest-standing co-educational day and flexi boarding 3 to 13 preparatory school in the area. Girls and boys seamlessly working and learning together in a genuine 3 to 13 co-educational setting is something we are very proud of. This year is therefore very exciting for us, as we continue our work on the development of our ‘21st century – Beechwood Park Learner Profile’, an exceptional, world-class education programme for girls and boys that strengthens their opportunity for lifelong, worldwide success. In addition to that, we have an exciting site, facilities and resources development plan for 2025 and beyond – stay tuned!

Head of King’s Magna Middle School for Years 6-9, Joe Birchall, explains what’s new at the school
King’s Magna Middle School (KM), part of Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate in York, is best known for its state-of-the-art facilities, exceptional extra-curricular o ering, and its highly respected position as the main feeder school into the high-ranking QE College and QE Faculty schools.
From Year 6, it o ers a programme of individual support and study skills sessions to best prepare students for success at GCSE and A-level, the results of which are evident in how the two senior schools perform, with the combined percentages for 2024 at 78% A*/A at A Level, 73% Distinction in BTECs and 62% grades 7-9 in GCSEs.
The school seamlessly bridges the gap between primary and secondary education whilst allowing plenty of time for enrichment activities, of which there are over 100 available to students, including a huge variety of sport, creative arts, performing arts and academic clubs ranging from STEM to Mandarin. This year, Spanish, German, French, Public Speaking, Creative
Writing, Debating, Table Tennis, Spinning, and Fencing have been added to the vast curriculum enrichment programme, allowing students to take two of these options within their weekly timetable. KM is always looking to the future. Each year new opportunities are added to the curriculum options, of which students in Years 6-9 choose two choices to focus on each term. In Year 9, students choose an additional four ‘specialisms’ such as Business Studies, Computing, Design Technology, Home Economics and Photography. This year, three ‘higher-level challenge’ options have been added – two mathematics choices and one science. The science option allows students to take part in competitions to build and program robots and to design experiments that will be sent to space. This subject option allows students to work towards a Higher Project Qualification (HPQ), which stretches and challenges students through the requirement of independent research on a topic that becomes a written report, an artefact or a production. The HPQ is GCSE level and candidates are awarded the equivalent of
a short-course GCSE upon completion, which can also be used to apply for the nationally-recognised CREST Silver award. The maths-focused option is divided into two routes; ‘Stretch’ which pushes those that are academically gifted, and ‘Support’ which brings students up to a higher maths level. The ‘Stretch’ programme covers topics from the Level 3 Certificate in Mathematical Studies including analysis of data, personal finance, modelling and estimation, critical path analysis, project work, and cost-benefit analysis. Whereas the ‘Support’ pathway allows students to learn, and be examined in, the Level 1 Functional Skills Mathematics qualification and covers the use of number, the number system, the use of measures, shape and space, problem solving, and handling information and data, all of which will aid the transition to GCSE study.
On Saturdays, KM boarders can participate in the optional King’s Academy for Performing Arts or Queen’s Academy for Creative Arts. Alternatively, they can socialise and use the facilities across campus including the 25m swimming pool, recreational sports courts, the fast-food cafe, co ee shop, and games rooms. Each boarding house holds social events, and on Sundays, boarders can join exciting trips from city exploring, shopping and eating out to adrenaline activities and nature bathing.

skills. We also challenge the boys to push beyond the national curriculum, fostering inquisitiveness, resilience, and creativity.
Q How has the school year gone so far?
Q What originally attracted you to working at Lockers Park back in 2008?
A The warm welcome I always received when bringing visiting teams to Lockers Park, coupled with the school’s collaborative approach to working in the best interests of the children, made it clear that this was a place focused on holistic development. It o ered an environment where I could grow professionally, while contributing meaningfully to the boys’ education and development.
Q What has been the biggest change in your time at the school?
A The school continues to evolve, and education must look forward to prepare boys for the modern world. We embrace technology, recognising its value in both the classroom and home. However, we emphasise that boys should not become overly reliant on devices, but instead develop strong reasoning and critical thinking skills. One of the most significant changes has been the introduction of a Learner Profile, which helps boys identify and build upon their unique
A This year has been tremendous for Lockers Park. Our 150th celebration provided a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the past while focusing on building strong foundations for the future. The boys have thrived across academics, sports, and extracurricular activities. Our academic results remain strong, with an increasing number of boys securing sought-after senior school places. Outside the classroom, we were crowned national skiing champions and achieved regional success in badminton and swimming. We’ve also celebrated numerous scholarship o ers for boys excelling in academics and other disciplines. The range of opportunities at Lockers Park is remarkable, whether in robotics, debating, chess, or countless other activities.
Q What are you looking forward to most during the rest of 2025?
A There is so much to look forward to this year, and at the heart of it is celebration. We take immense pride in recognising the boys’ successes across all areas of school life. With boys heading to esteemed schools such as Eton, Harrow, Winchester, and St Albans, we are confident they are well-prepared to excel. Hearing about their continued success when they return to share their stories is a powerful reminder of the lasting impact of the work we do as a team. It’s a privilege to be part of something so special.
