ABSOLUTELY’S November issue highlights
1
As a kid I was obsessed with the books of Roald Dahl. I may now be more aware of his questionable beliefs, but as a 12-year-old I loved the world of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, The Twits, The Witches and more. I loved the fact they were dark as well as incredibly funny, with Quentin Blake's illustrations adding to the love.
Like me, David Walliams too was a fan of Dahl's books, but that's probably where the similarities between us end. Walliams has gone on to make quite a name for himself in the children's book world –although to me he will always be a comedy legend –and this month sees his Awful Auntie novel take to the stage in Milton Keynes in an enthralling adaptation. He tells us about the thrill of seeing his words come to life, and why The Shining is an unlikely inspiration.

“You feel like a magician when you see your book come to life”
Just Awful
David Walliams has well and truly cornered the children’s book market, with a new production coming to the area this November. Absolutely finds out more
By DIANE PARKES
The bestselling children’s author David Walliams and the award-winning Birmingham Stage Company have teamed up for a brand-new production of the family adventure Awful Auntie. This is their latest collaboration in a series of shows which includes the Oliver Award-nominated Gangsta Granny and Billionaire Boy. It can be seen at Milton Keynes Theatre from 31 October-2 November.
When Stella sets o to visit London with her parents, she has no idea her life is in danger! When Stella wakes up three months later, only her Aunt Alberta can tell her what has happened. But not everything Alberta tells her turns out to be true and Stella quickly discovers she’s in for the fight of her life against her very own awful Auntie… Absolutely sat down with the comedy legend to find out more about the origins of the book and what to expect with this show.
Q What or who inspired the character Awful Auntie?
A It may not be the answer you were expecting, but I am obsessed with the film The Shining. I wanted to create a horror story where a child was trapped in a house with a dangerous relative, cut o from the outside world. As for the character herself I had a lot of fun creating Aunt Alberta. Villains are always so much more fun than heroes. I wanted her to be funny as much as scary, which is something my literary hero Roald Dahl always did so brilliantly.
Q I have to ask the question – did/do you have any awful aunties and are they recreated in any way in the book?
A I am lucky enough to have three nice aunties, so no Alberta is not based on them. So in writing the book I let my imagination run riot, which is normally the best way to go. My real-life granny inspired Gangsta Granny, but my aunties have yet to inspire me to write anything about them.
Q You’ve worked with BSC a number of times now. Why do you think the collaboration has been so successful?
A I think I share a sense of humour with Neal Foster who runs BSC and has written all of the adaptations, so it has been very harmonious. Also the company are really successful, and have been making magnificent family shows for years, so I completely trust them.
Q How did you feel watching Gangsta Granny and seeing audience reactions?
A You feel like a magician when as an author you see your book come to life. It’s a real thrill to hear audiences laughing, one that never leaves you even though I have been making comedy shows of my own for many years.
Q What did you like best about the show?
A I think the heart of the story is intact, but there are lots of great new jokes too. The cast are fantastically talented and all work o each other brilliantly. I couldn’t be happier with it.
Q Are you surprised at how successful Gangsta Granny has proved to be?
A I feel it should now be on stage somewhere in the world until the end of time. Then I can retire! I am proud of the book, it seems to have really struck a chord with readers, so I am glad that more and more people can enjoy the story by seeing it on stage.
Q Bearing in mind the colourful array of characters in Awful Auntie, do you think there are any particular challenges in bringing it to the stage?
A I think the world of Awful Auntie is very heightened, for example Aunt Alberta has a henchman who is actually an owl. So I think capturing the tone of the book and still making it believable will be the biggest challenge. Also trying to balance the humour with the frightening moments is never easy, but I have every faith in the BSC.
Q How do you anticipate children will react di erently to the stage show than reading the book?
A When you read a book it’s normally on your own, whereas when you watch a stage show you share the experience with an audience. You are likely to laugh more in an audience, so hopefully the stage show will be a hoot.
Q What do you hope children will take away from seeing the production?
Stella is a pretty self-reliant heroine, and so I hope children will be inspired to find the strength within themselves to deal with bad situations. Also Stella is posh and even has the title ‘Lady’, but by the end of the story she realises none of that is important and that all people should be treated the same. I believe that too.
Q Tiddlywinks makes an appearance in Awful Auntie – what’s your secret for tiddlywinks success?
A The great thing about tiddlywinks is the name. It’s the best named game out there. I haven’t played it for years, but I think speed is the key. Or feel free to cheat.
Q When there are so many technologies and activities vying for children’s attention, why do you think children will still pick up a good book?
A I think books are so immersive that children do like being alone with them. I think we all have JK Rowling to thank for turning children onto books in their millions.
Q Which other modern children’s authors do you admire and why?
A Dame Jacqueline Wilson is a genius. I read Tracy Beaker and instantly thought I should give up. It’s so brilliant. Michael Morpurgo is an astonishingly good writer who has found an exciting way to teach children about history. He is an absolute gentleman too. Andy Stanton’s books are very funny, as are Je Kinney’s. I love to read Julia Donaldson books with my son. Judith Kerr is a brilliant author and illustrator, and let’s not forget Michael Bond who created Paddington.
Q Do you have a favourite of your own novels and why?
A Mr Stink is my favourite. I think it has a strong message about how we treat people less fortunate than ourselves, and Sir Quentin Blake’s illustrations are of course absolutely magical.

SUBJECT TABOO
PBy EVE HERBERT
A new exhibition at the Fashion and Textile Museum focuses on the radical fashions of the 1980s
erformance artist Leigh Bowery opened Taboo in 1985 – and although the tiny club in the corner of Leicester Square lasted barely a year, it provoked an extraordinary explosion of fashion designers, artists, writers, performers and fi lmmakers. This outrageous, alternative arena where the anarchic energy of the night spilt over into the experimental creativity of the day is the focus of a new exhibition at the Fashion and Textile Museum. Enter 1980s London with its squat life, markets and the dance floor at Taboo and discover the style media, boutique owners and popstars who were instrumental in giving the designers an international platform.
This is the fi rst exhibition to explore the range of designers and creatives associated with Taboo, many of whom have been forgotten or died tragically young. Although Taboo was short-lived, the exhibition will bring to light a creative community of people who together influenced and changed the landscape of
popular culture in the mid-1980s. With items on display ranging from a graphic jacket worn by Boy George and designed by Dean Bright to a carpet coat by Mark and Syrie, a yellow shower curtain cape worn by Nicola Bowery and a gold suit designed by Stephen Linard, the exhibition showcases radical designs by fearlessly alternative designers.
The exhibition starts with a recreation of the squat where Leigh Bowery lived with Trojan, complete with Star Trek wallpaper and mirrored walls. Also recreated are the markets where many of the designers had stalls, a secret world of makeshift stalls where subcultures from Goth to Rockabilly mixed, and were remixed and reinvented by the renegades of alternative fashion. Designers like Pam Hogg, Red or Dead, Rachel Aubyn, Leigh Bowery and BodyMap all started their careers with market stalls.
Emboldened by the rebellious attitude of the earlier punk movement and influenced by the excesses of glam rock, the designers featured were predominantly young and working class. They gravitated
towards London aided by the availability of squats, hard-to-let council flats, student grants and signing on, and here they embraced their freedom, creating a family of outsiders, misfits and rebels. Revolutionary and provocative in tone, they wanted to tear down the establishment and create subversion by dressing up. Economic freedom meant the designers were not constrained by the demands of business and were able to be incredibly experimental, pushing the boundaries of creativity, gender and artistic vision.
As we go into the night, the club section features a recreation of the legendary dance floor at Taboo, styled by performance artist and club kid David Cabaret and using original Adel Roostein mannequins from his collection. The Taboo dancefloor showcases real characters from the Taboo scene and clothes designed and worn by Leigh Bowery alongside outfits worn by Dave Cabaret, Nicola Bowery, Trojan and Sue Tilley. Highlights include a red and green spotted coat with a giant collar made for Michael Clark by Leigh Bowery and David Cabaret’s infamous Bumps Outfit, a fusion of sci-fi and op art, it features a black and white catsuit panelled and stu ed with foam.
In 1983 New York club queen Susanne Bartsch was so enamored with the London scene and Taboo designers that she brought their work to New York, creating a sensation in her Roxy Roller Rink fashion show. The exhibition features 10 outfits that Suzanne brought to New York by designers Elmaz Huseyin, BodyMap, Richard Torry and Annie La Paz. Highlights include Elmaz Huseyin’s 1970s inspired bright red pleather coat with giant fake fur collar seen alongside a hand-painted swimsuit with a crepe 1970s inspired coat. Upstairs the exhibition looks at the dissemination of Taboo’s creativity, from the new style magazines like The Face and I-D to the pop stars who were scouted at
clubs and went on to bring the clothes to a wider audience. The Pop Stars section features outfits worn by Boy George, a bra top designed by Judy Blame for Neneh Cherry, a jacket worn by Martin Fry of ABC and designed by Elmaz Huseyin, and an outfit designed by Leigh Bowery and worn by Frankie goes to Hollywood. With its focus on flamboyant dressing up, Taboo pushed the boundaries of fashion and gender and can be seen as a vibrant and influential marker in LGBT history at the time of Clause 28 and before AIDS. Many of the clothes are non-conforming, provocative or gender neutral – from a girl in a tailored jacket styled with a pair of men’s Y fronts to a man in skin-tight patterned leggings styled with a bomber jacket and Doctor Martens. The exhibition demonstrates an early focus on the radical mixing up of gender stereotypes. While some of the designers were catapulted straight from college to stardom as boutiques like Browns famously bought up the graduate collections of John Galliano and Dean Bright, many designers from the Taboo scene never reached wider audiences. Hugely influential today, the Taboo aesthetic was a progressive, gender queer, nightclub look that continues to influence contemporary style from streetwear to the work of contemporary designers.
Exhibition until 9 March 2025

“A frequent error is opting for a trust that doesn't match the needs of your beneficiaries”
ESTABLISHING TRUST
B P Collins on the top three trust pitfalls to avoid and what you should be doing
SELECTING THE WRONG TRUST
It’s essential to choose the right type of trust. There are various options, including discretionary trusts, bare trusts, and interest in possession trusts, each with unique tax and asset distribution implications. A frequent error is opting for a trust that doesn’t match the goals or the needs of your beneficiaries. For instance, a discretionary trust allows trustees to have full authority over asset distribution, which may not be ideal if you intend for your beneficiaries to receive a set level of income. Making the wrong choice can lead to unexpected tax burdens, conflicts among beneficiaries, or failure to meet the trust’s intended purpose.
NEGLECTING TO PROPERLY APPOINT TRUSTEES
Trustees are vital for managing the trust, making asset distribution decisions, and ensuring compliance with the trust’s terms. A significant mistake is appointing trustees without thoroughly evaluating their skills, reliability and commitment to the role over time. Trustees lacking financial knowledge, interest, or facing potential conflicts of interest can mismanage the trust or create disputes among beneficiaries. Moreover, not having the right number of trustees or failing to designate a successor trustee can complicate trust management if a trustee is unable or unwilling to fulfil their duties.
IGNORING TAX IMPLICATIONS
In England and Wales, trusts face a range of taxes, such as inheritance tax, income tax and capital gains tax. A significant error is not fully grasping and preparing for these tax consequences when establishing a trust. For example, a discretionary trust may incur periodic inheritance tax charges, while a bare trust can a ect the income tax responsibilities of the beneficiaries or indeed the donor. Overlooking these tax obligations can erode the trust’s assets and ultimately lessen the advantages for the beneficiaries. It’s crucial to obtain professional guidance to design the trust in a tax-e cient way and ensure compliance with all reporting requirements to HMRC. To help avoid these pitfalls, meticulous planning, a solid understanding of the legal and tax implications and expert advice from trust specialists such as B P Collins’ trusts team are essential to guarantee that the trust achieves its intended objectives and functions e ectively. Get in touch today and arrange a chat with the experts.

TRICKS of the trade
Stress-free festive hosting: Verity Copas on how you can have a relaxed Christmas
Since marrying into the Copas family, the Berkshire farming family known for their “very, very special” Christmas turkeys, Verity Copas has had ample opportunities to exercise her natural gift for organising as host for myriad holiday dinners and gatherings. She invited us into the gorgeous barn conversion she and Tom C Copas call home, and shared some of the tricks and techniques she relies on to ensure that her Christmases run like clockwork – and that she gets to enjoy the festivities as much as her guests do!
Q How early do you start working on Christmas?
A It’s madness, but I start in January. There are lots of fun things you can get in the January sales for kids – books, clothes and games. As they get older, they can be more specific, but I think younger kids just love even small gifts to open.
Q Can you share your full timeline for Christmas dining?
A When hosting at ours, we have cheese on Christmas Eve. I’ve found people don’t get to the cheese Christmas Day, as they’re always full post a big meal and pudding. So we usually go to the pub and then have a picky supper of ham and cheeses. The rest is then served Christmas evening. I use most of Christmas Eve for prep, down to preparing all veg, popping them in the pans and placing some in water overnight to keep them fresh. I lay out all the crockery for serving and lay the table.
VERITY COPAS
“I would advise everyone and anyone to delegate”
Christmas morning I usually start cooking around 8/9am and serve a brunch around 10am. After brunch, we walk to the pub (which I plan around the cooking). I stay for a drink, then drive back to continue doing meal prep. We start serving food at around 2.15pm. We usually finish around 4/5pm and then we do presents and games, ending the day with films and (more) cheese in the evening.
Q When do you ask for help or delegate?
A I used to be averse to this, but now I would advise everyone and anyone to delegate. Even simple things like napkins and crackers. Who cares if someone gets confused and brings actual cheese crackers and not crackers that pop? I think sharing the load enhances the day as everyone gets to add their little bit of Christmas. Last year my brother and sister-inlaw hosted, and it was also lovely not to have to do the Christmas Day planning.
If you are always taking on this role, sometimes it’s nice to step back and let someone else run the show altogether!
Q What have you found to be the parts of hosting Christmas that you’re most precious about?
A I think I’m most precious about keeping the house the way I like it, but I also love having everyone here together. I always try to think in the moment: once they’re gone, you will miss them, so enjoy them while they’re here! I think the best part is being able to show everyone how much care and e ort I am willing to put into the day so we can all be together and enjoy each other.
Q Where do you feel like it makes the most sense to invest in quality?
A Invest in the turkey or centrepiece you buy! I actually have a few vegetarians in my family and do a nut roast from
scratch, which I freeze in advance. I make sure this is made from top-quality ingredients and tastes delicious.
Q How actively do you need to manage the structure of your Christmas Day to have it run to plan?
A I would say most of the management goes into the planning. My aim is to enjoy the day as much as possible.
Q If someone is hosting Christmas for the first time, are there any tips you’d emphasize to help them take on the responsibility without getting too stressed?
A Delegate or ask for help! Don’t be a martyr. Often everyone does want to help. Start a WhatsApp group, list what needs to be done and let people vote and o er help. You can still coordinate and have the day you want, but you will be supported and everyone will feel part of it. Also: do not try anything new! Plan a meal you are confident in making so it feels less stressful. (Use our online planner and timings – they will guide you through the day.)
Q When you look back on Christmas after the fact, what tells you you’ve been successful?
A That I have had a chance to sit down and chat and enjoy everyone’s company. Albeit this is slightly di erent now we have kids!

Bucks stars Vernon Kay and La Voix gear up for a magic carpet ride to Wycombe this Christmas
It’s never too early to break out the jingle bells at Wycombe Swan, where everyone’s getting in the festive spirit ahead of the welcome return of BBC Radio 2 favourite, Vernon Kay, to the panto stage this Christmas. Bucks local Vernon will star in the sensational family pantomime Aladdin, running from 13 December 2024 to 5 January 2025. Excited for his panto return, Vernon says: “As soon as I mentioned coming back to Wycombe’s panto this year, Tess and the girls saw my eyes light up and said I had to do it. Panto’s been such a family tradition for us, and it’s amazing to continue that and share it with families across Bucks and Berks. I can’t wait to dig into rehearsals with La Voix, Kyle, and a stellar company.”
Vernon, who began hosting BBC Radio 2’s popular mid-morning show in February 2023, made his panto debut in 2022, winning Best Newcomer for Wycombe Swan’s Cinderella at the UK Pantomime Awards. Joining him will be the hilarious queen of panto, La Voix, who is currently competing in this series of Drag Race UK, and West End star Kyle Richardson, who recently played the role of Simba on the UK/Ireland tour of The Lion King. Produced by Imagine Theatre, this brand-new production of Aladdin will feature their award-winning digital sets, a highlight from previous years at the Swan. But wait! There’s more to celebrate the season with the whole family at Wycombe Swan, oh yes there is! The

How to choose and decorate the best Christmas tree for you
Areal Christmas tree with its unmistakable scent, dazzling array of decoration and twinkling lights, should always take centre stage when preparing your homes for the festive season.
At Capital Gardens, they understand the importance of a perfect Christmas tree. That’s why they ensure the quality and variety provided by their longstanding UK suppliers is always the best you’ll find anywhere. In their Garden Centres, you will find an extensive selection of trees and everything you need to decorate and illuminate them too, as you can read about below.
NORDMANN FIR
A firm favourite, the Nordmann Fir has a timeless shape and lush, glossy green foliage on tiered branches. It is perfect for showcasing decorative ornaments, and the soft familyfriendly needles make decorating easy for all the family too.
FRASER FIR
Its conical shape makes the Fraser Fir ideal for smaller spaces. Giving a delightful scent, the dense branches with soft greensilver needles make it an excellent choice.
NOBLE FIR
The Noble Fir displays all the qualities of an ideal Christmas tree. And, thanks to its beautiful blue-green foliage and pleasant fragrance, it is an attractive tree too. With excellent needle retention, open branching and perfect shape, this tree is ideal for showcasing those larger decorations.
POT-GROWN
When you buy a pot-grown tree, you’re getting a living tree. After the festive season, return it to Capital Gardens for their amazing supplier to replant in a forest. Care for it so it can keep growing and absorbing CO2. As a thank you, you'll receive a 20% o voucher for next year!
HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR PERFECT CHRISTMAS TREE
Decide where your tree will be placed. Remember not near heat or people
“Think of your Christmas tree like wallpaper”
running past! If you are using mains powered tree lights, place your tree near a plug socket. Choose a tree that fits the available height and space. Leave about 40cm between the top of the tree and the ceiling.
HINTS FOR DECORATION
Think of your Christmas tree like wallpaper – have a repeat pattern using the same baubles two or three times up and down the tree. For ease, remove the metal hook from the bauble, place it over a branch, and reattach the bauble to secure it. Dangly ones are fine too! Put plainer baubles closer to the tree trunk and the more decorative ones nearer the tips of the branches. Buy twice as many baubles as you think you might need – this is the same for lights! Position your lights up and down the branches, do not wrap them around the tree. Use decorations and lights in a way that will retain the magical shape of the tree.

Wine recommendations for the month
By THE WINE SOCIETY
The Society's Falanghina 2023
£9.75
Falanghina is one of Italy's many native grape varieties that we feel shouldn't be left under the radar. With tangy nectarine and tangerine flavours, this is a lovely crisp, dry and expressive wine to add to your selection.
Cirò Rosato Gaglioppo, Santa Venere 2023
£11.50
Organically grown in a stunning southern Italian vineyard overlooking the sea, this is a full-flavoured dry rosé of great charm and red-berry focus and bright pink colour.
Martinborough Vineyards
Te Tera Martinborough Pinot Noir 2022 £17
This is a really wellmanaged and balanced pinot noir. The nose shows black cherry, plum and charred wood with a delicate hint of smouldering embers. The palate is bright but brooding, with bramble fruit, redcurrant, sour cherry and a twist of cracked black pepper.
Since it was founded back in 1874, The Wine Society has dared to do business a little differently. Bringing together a community united by a shared love of wine, The Society is a co-operative and owned by its members. This means there is no requirement to pump profit into annual dividends or bonuses for shareholders – all profits go back into the business.

wonder
As we head into a new season, there’s plenty that’s hot right now in weddings
As we move into the winter of 2024, the wedding industry is abuzz with new trends that promise to make each ceremony unique and memorable. From breathtaking venues to fashion-forward dresses, the season is set to deliver a blend of tradition and innovation.
VENUES
Rustic Elegance
Barns and farm venues o er a cosy, intimate setting that complements the autumnal aesthetic perfectly. Decor often includes elements like fairy lights, wooden accents, and seasonal foliage, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.
Winter Wonderland Castles
For those who dream of a fairytale wedding, castles and historic estates provide a majestic backdrop. These venues o er grand ballrooms and enchanting gardens that can be transformed into a winter wonderland with twinkling lights, ice sculptures, and luxurious fabrics.
DECOR
Jewel Tones and Metallics
Deep jewel tones such as emerald green, sapphire blue, and ruby red are paired with metallic accents in gold, copper, and bronze. These colours add richness and depth.
Seasonal Blooms and Foliage
Florals for autumn and winter weddings focus on seasonal blooms such as dahlias, chrysanthemums, and roses, combined with rich greenery like eucalyptus and pine. Adding elements like berries, pinecones and branches enhances the seasonal theme.
FASHION
Bridal Gowns
Classic elegance: timeless silhouettes such as A-line and ball gowns remain popular, but with modern twists like o -the-shoulder necklines, illusion sleeves, and intricate lace detailing. Statement sleeves: dramatic sleeves are making a big impact, ranging from billowing bishop sleeves to structured pu sleeves. These add a touch of romance and grandeur to bridal attire. Colour infusions: while white and ivory are traditional, subtle infusions of colour are trending.
Groom and Groomsmen Attire
While classic black tuxedos remain a staple, grooms are adding personal touches with coloured velvet jackets, patterned bow ties, and unique cu inks. Layering is key for winter weddings, with groomsmen sporting vests and overcoats in rich fabrics like wool and tweed.

WINTER SKIN
GLOW UP
Dr Nyla Raja of Dr Nyla Medispa London explains how to protect your skin this winter
DR NYLA RAJA SPORTING THE ILLUMINATING EYE CREAM
Keeping your complexion on point throughout the winter months can be challenging.
Founder and Medical Director of award-winning Doctor Nyla Medispa, Dr Nyla Raja, explains: “Winter is a magical time of year, with seasonal celebrations filling our social calendars. However, a combination of seasonal stress, over-indulgence, and cold weather conditions can a ect our skin health leaving us with skin that’s dull, dehydrated, and irritated. It’s therefore important to protect skin throughout the winter months so that the skin barrier is maintained, enabling the skin to retain its natural glow.
“One of the best things you can do for your skin throughout this period is to increase the skin’s hydration. This not only means drinking more water, but also adjusting the products you use to suit the needs of the season. Switching up your moisturiser to one that’s more oil based is beneficial as it increases hydration levels and counteracts dehydrating e ects such as lack of humidity, indoor heating, and bathing in hot water. SPF is also essential.
Not just for summer, wearing SPF daily is just as crucial throughout the winter months when UV damage can still occur.
“Using active ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, ceramides and peptides that maximise hydration, protect the skin barrier and reduce inflammation is key as they help to nourish the skin throughout winter when it’s often at its most sensitive. This is especially relevant for individuals with inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis who naturally have drier skin and may need to use their emollients more regularly at this time of year.”
A highly respected and much sought after cosmetic dermatology GP, considered to be one of the top cosmetic doctors in the country, Dr Nyla has practiced medicine for 20+ years and has personally delivered over 200,000 treatments with exceptional results. A firm favourite with TV personalities, well-known celebrity figures and the media, her London clinic is home to some of the most sophisticated medical aesthetic technologies that the industry has to o er.
Dr Nyla continues: “In addition to good skincare practices, advanced skincare treatments can also help to manage the e ects of winter and get the skin glowing in advance of the festive season. It’s ideal to start as far ahead as possible as many require a course of treatments for the most e ective outcomes. Some of my favourite treatments to super-charge your winter glow up include:

GREAT STRIDES
Keen runner Carly Glendinning tries the high-tech Peloton Tread
Reaching peak popularity during the pandemic, Peloton is known for bringing spinning classes into the home with its Bike+. But I'm at the premium fitness brand’s swish HQ in London’s Covent Garden to try the 'Tread'. The Tread is a dream machine for serious runners like me. With a 23.8" HD touchscreen (that tilts so that you can do classes on and o the treadmill), it also has front and rear-facing studio-quality speakers. I've used the Peloton Bike+ before, so I already have an account and am able to login and see all of my training metrics
to-date. Peloton is constantly pushing the boundaries when it comes to innovative content, so I’m excited to start with a ‘Lanebreak’ class – which aims to gamify running. I follow a spinning wheel around a running track on the screen, adjusting the incline and speed dials in order to hit the targets. I'm not a gamer myself, but I can definitely see how it could get additive (in the best possible way). Next up, is a 20 minute HIIT Run with the upbeat Jess Sims. This is similar to the interval training that I usually do in the gym, and I really enjoy this class. As I pick up the pace, I notice how quiet the running belt is compared to other treadmills.
I finish with a cool down run with Jermaine Johnson. The soundtrack features lots of feel-good tracks, and I'm able to save my favourites to the playlist on my profile for later. Most impressive though is the ‘Pace Targets’ feature, which allows you to personalise your running training by selecting from 10 levels at the start of the class. It suggests speed and incline ranges for you as you run, which makes me want to push myself. I might have only scratched the surface of what the Tread is capable of, but I leave definitely wanting more.
The Peloton Tread starts at £3,345. onepeloton.com

Celebrating 25 years of Grand Designs, Carpenter Oak revisits one local project that shined a light on timber frame self-builds
irst airing in 1999 on Channel 4, Grand Designs has certainly stood the test of time – just like the iconic buildings it showcases. Launched in the era of home improvement shows, it quickly became a TV hit that captivated audiences and has continued to do so for the past 25 years.
This autumn, the series that catapulted Kevin McCloud to fame is celebrating its milestone anniversary, with a special episode to kick o the new series. Looking back at the legacy of the show and its impact on home innovation and design, over the past 25 years, timber frame projects have regularly appeared.
As one of the UK’s leading timber specialists, Carpenter Oak has been proud
to see several of their projects featured over the course of the 25-year series. Managing Director at Carpenter Oak, Luke CopleyWilkins, says: “Grand Designs has had a huge impact on the self-build industry over the past 25 years. The show o ers a brilliant insight into what goes on behind the scenes, following each stage step by step and understanding the challenges involved. There is no real comparison to the influence it has had, empowering and inspiring self-builders to confidently pursue and build their own vision.”
The Grand Designs e ect
Appearing in series two of Grand Designs, The Cruciform House was Carpenter Oak’s first project to appear on the show.
Located in Berkshire, the green oak framed property is filled with natural light.
An experimental idea for its time, with a cross-shaped house made of oak and glass, Julie and Robert Upton started from a site with a dilapidated bungalow and set about building their dream home.
Designed by Roderick James Architects, the house has four wings with an impressive vaulted oak ceiling. Sitting up high on the Berkshire Downs, the house was designed to make the most of the stunning 360-degree view of the Lambourn valley.
Architect and managing partner at Roderick James, Mike Hope, worked on the project and recalls visiting several times during filming. “Including when they were installing the direct glazing and Kevin McCloud stood on a horizontal sheet of toughened glass to prove how strong
“IT HAS EMPOWERED AND INSPIRED SELF-BUILDERS”
it was! We all held our breath – the glass was fine; we were more worried about Kevin slipping o the glass in his socks!
“Like all good design, the house appears simple but is actually quite complicated,” Mike adds with a smile. “Grand Designs changed the face of self-building, and I can clearly remember how clients and builders suddenly became open to trying new designs and materials, as a direct result of the popularity of the television programme.”
Founding Director at Carpenter Oak, Adam Milton, recalls: “Building the Cruciform House was a unique challenge, particularly in aligning the cruciform wings with the octagonal core at the heart of the home. Each piece of oak was meticulously crafted and fitted, with the entire structure coming together as the roof was locked in place. The precision and skill required in timber framing are what make projects like this truly exceptional.”
“The influence of Grand Designs on selfbuilders goes hand-in-hand with the rise in popularity for self-building your own home,” Adam adds. “The programme’s impact is incredible, and Kevin and the team had the foresight to see this movement was going to be popular – I’m sure it’s no coincidence that those first series, at the end of the 90s and early 2000s, was also when we saw rising demand for contemporary oak frame self-build homes.”

Why an indoor pool from Origin is worth the investment
Investing in an indoor swimming pool from Origin o ers many benefits, making it a perfect choice for homeowners seeking both luxury and practicality. From year-round enjoyment and increased property value to customisable designs and health benefits, an indoor pool provides a versatile addition to your home. As you consider whether an indoor pool is a good investment, it’s essential to understand how it can impact your home’s value and the potential return on investment (ROI). One of the most compelling advantages of an indoor pool is the ability to enjoy it throughout the year, regardless of weather conditions. Unlike outdoor pools, which are limited by seasonal use, indoor pools provide a dedicated space for exercise, relaxation and family fun all year long. Regular swimming enhances cardiovascular health, builds muscle strength, reduces stress and contributes to overall mental and physical well-being, making it a valuable addition to your lifestyle.
Origin o ers bespoke indoor pool designs tailored to your specific preferences. This customisation ensures that your pool meets your functional needs and complements your home’s aesthetics – whether as an extension of your home or as a standalone structure in your garden. Indoor pools o er greater privacy and security than outdoor options, as they are protected from public view and weather-related damage, reducing maintenance e orts and costs.
An indoor pool can significantly enhance your home’s property value. A well-designed pool house adds functional space for recreation and relaxation, making your home more appealing to potential buyers. This exclusive feature can di erentiate your property in the market, attracting buyers seeking high-end amenities, potentially leading to a higher resale value and increased speed of sale.
The return on investment for an indoor swimming pool varies but can be substantial. When assessing ROI, consider the potential increase in property value and the long-term benefits of having a year-round recreational space. The ability to utilise the pool throughout the year adds immense value to your family’s lifestyle, o ering countless health benefits and enjoyment, ensuring a secure and long-lasting return on your investment.
While an indoor swimming pool is a significant investment, the rewards to your home and lifestyle far outweigh the initial costs. The health advantages are substantial, transforming your daily routine.

LEARNING FOR LIFE
Emma Károlyi
reflects
on why teaching was written in the stars and being the first female head of St George’s School Windsor Castle
Q Before we talk about St George’s School Windsor Castle, what originally inspired you into a career in education?
A Education runs in my family – my grandmother was a teacher, and my father taught before becoming an educational psychologist. One of my earliest memories was ‘playing schools’ with my toys and teaching them how to tell the time. I have to thank some of my incredible teachers too, particularly in junior school, who inspired me to go into the profession.
Q Can you give us a potted history of your roles to date?
A During my career I have taught all prep school year groups from Nursery to Year 8. I taught in the largest Edinburgh day school for seven years, ultimately becoming Head of Year 6. I then moved to East Lothian where I worked for 10 years, teaching Year 7 and my subject specialism, Latin and Classical Studies, before being appointed as Assistant Head and Director of Studies. Following this I became Head of the Junior King’s School in Canterbury for seven years.
Q What attracted you to working at St George’s School Windsor Castle?
A St George’s is a unique gem of a school and its warm ethos and values of Kindness, Honesty and Courage attracted me straight away. With around 300 children from Kindergarten to Year 8, the school is large enough for our students to build secure friendships, but small enough for them to enjoy a more personalised, supportive and individual approach in their educational journey. The school’s International Baccalaureate
curriculum was also attractive to me: the skills-based approach stretches our young people intellectually, and develops the crucial skills of inquiry, curiosity, collaboration and critical thinking. This thoroughly prepares them for senior school but also life beyond, ensuring our students are genuinely Real World Ready. Then of course, the iconic location and history. Dating from 1348 when the school was formed, originally to educate the choristers of St George’s Chapel, I love the juxtaposition of being one of the oldest prep schools in the country and one of the most intellectually forward-looking – it’s the best experience possible for our students.
Q How does it feel to be the first female head in the school’s history?
A I was the first female head of Junior King’s and now the first female head
“I love the juxtaposition of being one of the oldest prep schools in the country and one of the most intellectually forward-thinking”
of St George’s. While it’s special to be the first (twice!), it’s not something I spend time thinking about – there are too many other things to do!
Q What do you enjoy seeing in a typical class?
A I enjoy seeing engaged, happy children focused on their work in a calm environment and their enthusiasm and pride in their learning. Equally, seeing children taking on responsibilities – making speeches, looking after others, being kind, showing empathy and thoughtfulness as good citizens. I love hearing the children’s ideas.
Q What elements of running the school are you most excited about?
A St George’s is a very exciting and unique place, and I love the fact that no two minutes are ever the same. I am excited about working with my team to develop the school further, enhancing the already outstanding opportunities for our students and getting to know everyone in the community better.
Q How has your first month gone?
A The first month has flown by. I have been absorbing everything and listening
carefully, while getting to know the students, sta and parents, as well as the wider St George’s community. There have been a number of highlights already, but the one that has been the most personally memorable to date was my installation into St George’s Chapel as ‘Master of Grammar’.
Q Are you looking to introduce anything new in the coming months?
A As a head it is vitally important to fully understand the school you are leading. As such, my focus in the short term remains getting to know the school inside out, understanding what works well and how we can best continue to evolve to ensure we remain at the forefront of educational change. With a pioneering IB curriculum, a deeply ingrained focus on student wellbeing, and an enormous breadth of opportunity across performing arts, sport, art and design, St George’s School Windsor Castle is already extremely well placed to serve the needs of our young people. My job is to ensure it remains so, for many generations to come.

Next generation
Local independent day and boarding school for girls, Downe House, has partnered with Newbury-based Downs School (part of The Downland Alliance) and Bradfield College in Berkshire, to host a ‘Discover Teaching’ event at its campus in Cold Ash in November. The informal event, which is free of charge, aims to promote teaching as a career and to help people with a degree (or those studying for a degree) gain an understanding of the various pathways into the world of education. Attendees can also expect to network and hear from likeminded professionals from both the state and private sector, as well as discover the many rewards of the profession while enjoying delicious refreshments and hospitality courtesy of Downe House. Attendees will also receive personal invitations to future lesson observations and insight into future job vacancies at the local schools. The event will take place on Tuesday 19 November 2024 and attendees can drop in any time between 5.30pm to 7.30pm.

Shedding light
On 8 August, 20 Elstree School staff, four governors and one dog embarked on a long-distance hike in the Brecon Beacons to raise funds for the Charlie Waller Trust. Charlie Waller was a former Elstree pupil, and a great friend to many of the Elstree community. Charlie took his own life at the age of 28 in September 1997 and, since then, the Charlie Waller Trust has become one of the most respected UK mental health charities, educating young people about their mental health and wellbeing. The challenge took part in truly horrendous weather, with wind and rain lashing down on the team from the very start and mercifully stopping just as they approached the end of their hike. The team traversed the famous ‘Four Peaks’ of Fan-y-Big, Cribyn, Pen-y-Fan and Corn Du. They will share wonderful memories of a very wet, challenging and fun walk, and raised over £19,000 for the Charlie Waller Trust. elstreeschool.org.uk

It not only recognises the dedication and hard work of our Eco Club students, but also the school’s commitment to the future of our planet and developing responsible global citizens.” stgwindsor.org
