real perk of this job over the years has been the opportunity to go into the homes of the rich and famous. I have even had the pleasure to track the building of a three storey, seven bedroom home right from scratch – literally, I first visited when it was a crumbling heap, deciding to do an on-going story on its transformation. It was an eye-opening experience of the skill of architects and house builders alike. Celebrity homes are always intriguing, hence why so many Instagram handles have cropped up purely to follow renovations of those in the public eye. I was often terrified to touch anything as most were immaculate (probably the result of having staff on site 24/7) – and yet, I was always happy to return to my little flat back in the day.

I have moved on to a three bedroom home these days, but the same feeling remains: I just love being in my house. It is always a work in progress, though, which is why when Absolutely Home comes around I am excited. This month we visit an astonishing home in Henley for inspiration, see how Hill House Interiors was ahead of its time, and look for major makeover advice from BoConcept. Home sweet home indeed.

Kym Marsh talks to Absolutely about Hearsay, Coronation Street and playing the iconic Cruella de Vil in 101 Dalmatians The Musical

From making her name as part of chart-toppers Hearsay, to her 13-year stint on Coronation Street and beyond, Kym Marsh has always seemed like one of our warmest, most approachable stars. But now on stage, she’s tapping into her dark side, playing dog-murdering fashionista Cruella De Vil in a new UK tour of 101 Dalmatians The Musical, heading to our county this month.

“I enjoy playing [villainous] roles because they’re so far removed from me, so you have to really try and get into the head of that person,” she says, adding laughingly that “trying to get into the head of a person who wants to skin puppies to wear is especially alien to me because I’m such a huge dog lover! I’ve got two of my own, and I adore them”.

Cruella isn’t just any villain of course, she’s the most fabulous villain there is, and Kym can’t wait to get in front of an audience. “I think people are going to absolutely love her. The costumes are so brilliant, and when she walks on, she’s just in command of

everything. She’s the most fun character ever.” Best of all, Kym says, is her Cruella hair: of course, she will be sporting the character's iconic black-and-white do, “but there won’t be just one wig,” she says tantalisingly, “there’s going to be several changes and it’s not just what you expect from her. We’re like Cruella De Vil times ten!”

It’s not all just fun and games, though: for Kym, one of the big challenges of the role is getting back into singing mode again, after many years concentrating on other pursuits. “If you don’t sing, you forget,” she says – pointing out that while she had a role in a touring production of Take That musical Greatest Days last year, “I didn’t have a lot to sing [in that] – there were no solos, and nothing hugely taxing. Whereas in this, I’ve got my own songs, and there’s a lot to learn.” Plus when we speak two weeks into rehearsals, she’s simultaneously still filming the latest series of BBC school drama Waterloo Road, in which she plays canteen worker Nicky. “Yesterday I was feeling quite overwhelmed with everything, thinking: what am I doing?” she confesses. “But in a

good way – I’m just going to end up living and breathing her for the next few weeks.” If that sounds like a punishing schedule, then Kym has always been adept at juggling responsibilities, right from when she was starting out as a performer, while bringing up two children as a young single mum. She credits her parents with encouraging her drive to succeed: “I fell pregnant at a very young age and my parents were like 'this is even more reason for you to continue and carry on pursuing your dream, and make the life that you want, not just for you but for the children'. I was very much spurred on and encouraged [by them], and I’m very thankful for that.”

Then came Popstars, the ITV series in which she and four others were selected to be part of a new pop group, Hearsay; it kicked o a new era of national-talking-point talent shows, paving the way for Pop Idol and the X Factor. Looking back on it now, Kym says it was a “unique and very strange” time, but a great learning experience, because no-one had undergone anything quite like it before. “We were guinea pigs and people were watching thinking 'what’s going to

happen now?'... People were very much waiting for us to fail, and every move we made, there was a comment about it.”

Her subsequent transition into acting came about by “accident”, she says. After leaving Hearsay, and starting out on a solo career, she was dropped by her record label – and while pondering whether to go for another deal, she was o ered the role of Annette in a West End production of Saturday Night Fever “Once I started to do that, I remembered my love of acting which I had as a teenager but had not pursued, because I felt like I could make money singing in pubs and clubs.” After a few small TV roles, she was then o ered the role of Michelle Connor in Coronation Street, and was initially meant to appear in

just four episodes – but Kym made such an impression, they asked her to come back and she became one of the soap’s best-loved characters. “I never in a million years thought or expected [that was how things would go].”

Adding further strings to her bow, she’s now also a face of daytime TV as one of the hosts of the BBC’s flagship show Morning Live since its launch in 2020. When she was o ered the job, she had “huge impostor syndrome” because, while she had done a couple of presenting jobs for the BBC, she had never done a live TV gig. But four years on, and she’s incredibly grateful to have found in it a proper TV family.

For all that Kym’s career may be flourishing, she has also dealt with some tough personal challenges in recent times. In January, her father David died following a long battle with prostate cancer. His passing has left a big hole in Kym’s life, and afterwards she took some time out to grieve and care for her family. “My dad was the pinnacle of our lives, and very much the figurehead of the family,” she says. “It’s a huge loss, and I needed that time [o ] – and I think there may come times down the line where I

need it again, because it’s not something that you get over.” In particular, she says, “for him not to see me play this role makes me very sad because I think he would love it. I just hope he’s with me every night on the stage”. Meanwhile Kym’s daughter Emilie has been following in her footsteps as a singer and actor, and last year they starred alongside each other in Greatest Days, playing the same character at di erent points in her life. As a mum, it was an amazing opportunity to witness her really grow as a performer, she says. “I watched her going into rehearsals on the first day, being like a rabbit in the headlights and doubting herself, to suddenly making [the role] so much her own. And there were times where I was o stage, and I’d hear her through the speakers in my dressing room and go 'ooh, she’s just changed that bit'. It was lovely to hear her playing with [the part].”

One thing Kym is certain of is that “you’re going to see quite a lot of her in the future”.

As for Kym’s own future, her ambitions include doing some more meaty TV drama, and some more films. But really, she says, she’s happy to see where life takes her. “One minute I’m serving chips and beans in the canteen at Waterloo Road, and the next thing, I’m [Cruella] wearing [pretend] gira e skin. It’s a bizarre life I live!” she laughs.

101 Dalmatians takes to the stage at MK Theatre from 1-5 October. See more at miltonkeynes-theatre.co.uk

Exciting changes to Austen House Care Home

EMBRACE the season

Through October and November, the gardens cared for by the National Trust dazzle with the last hurrah of colourful dahlias, asters and anenomes, followed by a blaze of fiery foliage in the parks and woodlands. You’ll find plenty of late-summer colour in Greys Court’s walled garden, which features a series of outdoor rooms discovered by passing through gates and doors in ancient brick walls. The parterres at Cliveden, Waddesdon and Hughenden are all designed and planted to last well into autumn. The formal, geometric designs and bright colours are a contrast to cottage-style

The many ways you can enjoy autumn with the National Trust in Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and beyond

borders such as those at Nu eld Place and Chastleton, which become romantically soft and rambling in the mellow season.

AUTUMN COLOUR

The colour migrates from flowers to foliage as the season progresses and Basildon Park has a great vantage point from its balcony to see the autumn colour smouldering into life across the parkland and woodland. The majestic copper beech on the lawn, planted in Victorian times, is a particular favourite.

Hughenden has typical Chilterns woodlands of beech and oak, which turn yellow and bronze and crunchy underfoot with beech mast and acorns. There are lots of short and long waymarked walks to explore.

The Grecian Valley is a highlight of the autumn colour at Stowe Gardens. Beautiful copper beech and sweet chestnut trees line the valley edge and maples and spindles flash red and orange with sparks of pink spindle berries. The showstopper is the American area, loaded with red oak trees, liquidambars and maples.

POOCH PASSPORT

Last year, National Trust trialled the Pooch Passport in the London and South East region and it was so well-received, they’ve expanded it to the whole of England and Wales. From 1 September 2024, visitors can pick up a Pooch Passport from any participating National Trust place and start visiting with their dog to collect stamps for dog treats.

They’ve created Pooch Passport in partnership with natural pet food maker, Forthglade. Six stamps from di erent places will gain a bag of Forthglade treats, 12 stamps gains a stylish dog snood, and

for the LOVE DOGS of

Absolutely meets BarbaraHanly, the founder of Soopa, to discover how the pet treat brand was born out of undying a ection

They say that some people come into your life for a reason, but for former dog groomer

Barbara Hanly, it was a tiny 1.7kg Chihuahua X Jack Russell called Lily who was to become the catalyst to transforming a kitchen table idea into a successful business.

Barbara is the founder of Soopa, an awardwinning pet treat brand, celebrating canine health and well-being through a growing range of delicious plant-based recipes inspired by her beloved dog Lily coupled with her experience as a dog groomer.

“While working as a dog groomer, I was shocked at the amount of obesity, skin and health issues I saw in dogs,” she explains. “I started looking into typical ingredients added to dog food and treats. I realised then that I did not want Lily to consume all these nasty additives and fillers and that I could do better, so I set about researching and baking.”

With Lily and her friends as eager chief taste-testers, word soon spread through friends, then friends of friends, and soon Barabra was inundated by pet parents wanting to buy her range of delicious superfood treats for their fur babies. “It was then I began to realise that maybe I was onto something special, and if Lily and her friends, old and

BARBARA WITH HAMMIE

young, big and small, approved, then this could become a successful business.”

In 2013, Barbara o cially launched Soopa, and the company has already won multiple awards. It is regularly featured in the media and currently sells across the UK, Europe, Southeast Asia, and, more recently, the USA. However, Barbara has never strayed far from her original vision despite their commercial success. “I’ve always stayed true to my original quest to create delicious treats which combine human-grade superfoods that taste good and are good for your dog’s health,” she says.

“For example, we include cranberries in a couple of our recipes. Did you know that cranberries are an excellent source

of vitamin C, known for its positive impact on digestive health and boosting immunity? Every recipe we create is designed to benefit your dog’s health and well-being.”

With a growing range of tasty o erings, the Soopa range allows pet parents to shop by age and suitability with a focus on o ering pets with restrictive health conditions, including obesity and low immunity, flavourful treats that all dogs can enjoy without compromise.

“I am always thinking about new recipes and product ideas – it’s absolutely my favourite part of my role,” Barbara smiles. “Initially, I’ll present my ideas to my team and then decide which one to develop further. Once samples are ready, we do the all-important taste test phase with our in-house canine team. After packaging is designed and printed and production is complete, you are looking at six months from start to finish. We have just released our latest range, the 'Cosy Collection', embracing traditional seasonal flavours, including Pumpkin and Cranberry, with an autumnal flavour twist, especially for this winter season.”

As an ethical pet brand, Soopa ensures that all their treats are made to human-grade standard “because we wouldn’t feed our dogs something that we couldn’t eat ourselves” – a statement that was taken quite literally when former ITV’s This Morning presenter Holly Willoughby tasted their papaya dog

chews live on the show and approved! The brand’s range of dental sticks and healthy bites are also now packaged in their 100% paper-recyclable flow-wrap packaging. But their moral standing doesn’t finish there. “We support Dogs Trust Ireland by sharing their weekly dog spotlight on our social media to help find them homes,” Barbara explains. “We have 'Soopa Heroes of the Month', where we ask people to nominate their chosen charity via our website and Instagram posts, and we pick one at random and donate £100 to that charity.”

This love of dogs is intrinsic in Barbara’s approach to business philosophy and their success, but dogs have always played a big personal part in her life. “I’ve always been a huge animal lover,” she smiles. “My first dog was a Yorkshire terrier, Beauty, whom I absolutely adored. Beauty gave me a lot of stability during a di cult childhood when I was bullied at school. My dog Lily came into my life when a friend rescued her as a stray and was trying to find her a new loving home. The first time I met her, she jumped straight into my lap, and in that instant, I knew she was coming home with me! Lily is a huge part of the Soopa story. Lily sadly passed at the end of 2022, and I still miss her every day.”

Barbara was, however, to find another sweet soul to help ease the pain of losing Lily in the form of Hammie. “My heart was broken after losing Lily, so I wasn’t even thinking about another dog when I met a lovely lady in France who rescues dogs from China and re-homes them in Europe. She showed me a photo of Hammie the night he was found, all alone on the side of the road, and a part of me knew I had found a new soulmate. I have a feeling Lily may have even sent Hammie my way! Hammie has definitely helped heal my heart. He loves his new life on the road in the west of Ireland.”

The UK host for D-Day artwork For Your Tomorrow - the People’s Tribute has been announced: Stowe Gardens

Amemorial installation to soldiers killed in the D-Day landing on 6 June 1944 will be coming to the UK for exhibition this month where it can be seen in full for the first time. The artwork, For Your Tomorrow – the People’s Tribute, is currently on display in Normandy, but will be at the National Trust’s Stowe Gardens in Buckinghamshire, the UK’s o cial host of the commemoration.

Open to the public from the end of September until mid-November 2024, the large-scale art installation consists of 1,475 silhouettes of Second World War military personnel. For Your Tomorrow – the People’s Tribute was created by community artist,

since founding Oxfordshire-based charity Standing with Giants. The lifesize figures are constructed entirely by volunteers, using recycled building materials and create meaningful spaces for people to visit and reflect.

“Our ethos at Standing with Giants is to value life, to understand and appreciate why we have our freedom, and to remember and pay tribute to those who have fallen so we can live the lives we have today. Using outdoor art is a great way to do this,” says Dan.

Dan Barton, with the number of figures in the display representing the number of fatalities under British command on 6 June 1944. The figures will be installed in several areas of the 245-acres of landscape gardens at Stowe.

Tanya Brittain, General Manager of the National Trust gardens at Stowe, says: “It’s an honour to be chosen as the o cial UK host location for the British D-Day 80 memorial exhibition, For Your Tomorrow – the People’s Tribute. This October will be an opportunity to remember family, friends and colleagues lost in conflict situations over the past 80 years. Stowe has a rich military history and we look forward to welcoming visitors this autumn to experience this poignant outdoor art installation against the stunning backdrop of Stowe’s historic landscape gardens.”

Artist Dan Barton has delivered several impactful military-based displays

The silhouettes are designed to represent the military personnel from all the major services, but in addition, two bespoke figures of nurses have been included. They are of Sister Mollie Evershed and Sister Dorothy Field, who died while helping to save 75 men from the hospital ship SS Amsterdam which sank o the Normandy beaches on 7 August 1944. Both were given posthumous commendation for their actions and are the only two women commemorated on the British Normandy Memorial.

At Stowe there will be no additional charge to see the installation during normal opening hours, which is free to National Trust members. In addition, there will be sunrise (6am to 8am) and twilight (5.30pm to 7.30pm) visits available on select dates, for which there will be an additional charge.

CHOICE IS YOURS

Mila Smith writes about how she can help you with one of your life-changing decisions

Years ago, I was a single mother, well-educated and successful, but with a questionable relationship track record. I used to think I was unlucky in love until I worked out it had nothing to do with luck and everything to do with my choices… Meanwhile, my now husband was halfway through a complicated divorce, while dipping his toes in the treacherous waters of dating, asking himself a similar question: “What am I doing wrong?” We were no exception! People often “fall into” relationships blindly only to discover they don’t work, go through painful breakups, and back to the dating minefield…

It’s common practice to turn to career consultants for help with job search; business coaches for their professional opinion; financial advisors to look after our investments etc. However, often very little or no thought goes into choosing the right life partner despite the criticality of this decision for your future.

Of course, there is couples therapy, at which point you are already working with what you’ve got, trying to fix it. I am convinced, the best time to work on a relationship is before it begins. That is why, following 25 years in the corporate world, I decided to dedicate my time to helping men and women, as a certified Relationship & Dating Coach, find love and foster a happy relationship.

Love doesn’t come with a manual, but my one-to-one coaching programme will guide you every step of the way. Working with me you can:

• Let go of relationship myths and self-sabotaging beliefs;

• Leave your emotional baggage behind;

• Learn to identify (in)compatible people;

• Improve your self-esteem and bring out the best version of you;

• Understand what drives the opposite gender instead of guessing;

• Find your ideal partner and nurture an emerging relationship;

• Finally, feel great about love again.

There is a lot of conflicting advice out there, but I have been trained by one of the world’s most trusted relationship experts and use proven science and researchbased methods which work no matter how many times you failed in the past. So, do you really want to do it right this time around?

Wine recommendations for the month

The Wine Society’s Generation Series Crémant de Loire 2020

A classic blend based on the chenin blanc grape variety, with cabernet franc, and a little chardonnay and grolleau. It displays chenin and cabernet's freshness and minerality, its aromas enhanced by a hint of red fruits from the grolleau, rounded on the palate by chardonnay's body and texture.

Forage Supply Co Rib Tickler Barossa Valley Shiraz 2023

 £22.50

Deep, intense but brilliantly vibrant red, with a nose of cassis, clove, pepper, plum and a lick of sweet spices. The palate is velvety, full and juicy. The profit from Forage's wines goes towards their social care projects in South Australia.

Mendes and Symington

Contacto Alvarinho Vinho Verde 2023

 £16.00

From the Monção e Melgaço sub-region of northern Portugal, the natural home of the alvarinho grape, and made by one of its finest producers, who uses a little skin contact (hence the name) to give structure to this invigorating linear dinner-table white.

Since it was founded back in 1874, The Wine Society has dared to do business a little differently. Bringing together a community united by a shared love of wine, The Society is a co-operative and owned by its members. The head chef at The Mutton on Hazeley Heath discusses Cornish inspiration, zero waste food and a global menu

Located on Red Hill, alongside the famous Hazeley Heath, overlooking Hazeley Farm, The Mutton echoes style with an array of gorgeous spaces available to book. Their menu combines creative seasonal dishes with more traditional pub favourites; all made using the very best of British ingredients. On the bar you will find a good selection of perfectly kept cask ales, craft beers, delicious cocktails as well as their extensive wine list, which will delight even the black sheep of the family. Drawing inspiration from locally sourced British produce, the menu champions seasonality and boasts of provenance with each delicious dish bursting with flavour handcrafted by head chef Rob Boer. Absolutely decided to visit and sit down with Rob to discuss his career and vision for The Mutton.

Q Did you have an interest in cooking at an early age?

A Yes, I always enjoyed cooking at home with my mum and dad from an early age.

Q When did it become a serious career consideration?

A I left school when I had just turned 16 and went to catering college in London. I haven’t looked back since.

Q Was working for Nathan Outlaw your first job in a professional kitchen?

A No, it wasn’t. Whilst I was at catering college, I worked part time in kitchens to gain experience. Once qualified, my first job was at a restaurant in central London. After a year, I moved to Cornwall to work for Nathan Outlaw. I loved working on the seaside – from the restaurant’s window, I could see the beach where the mussels we served had been caught. It doesn’t get much fresher than that!

“IT WAS GREAT FUN TO EXPERIMENT AND CREATE UNIQUE DISHES”

Q What would you say was the biggest thing you learnt during that time?

A When I was in Cornwall, I learnt about the importance of fresh produce, which is emphasised more than it was in London. I also learnt a bit about foraging.

Q What came next?

A After I left Cornwall, I did a ski season in Switzerland cooking at a small hotel. After that, I got a job at The Black Rat in Winchester. This is where I feel I grew most as a chef; I was working under some inspirational head chefs and in the kitchen I had a lot of freedom to create my own dishes with local foods and foraged items. It was great fun to experiment and create unique dishes, and it was a very friendly kitchen which I loved being a part of.

Q When did the opportunity come to work at The Mutton and what attracted you to working there?

A I loved the idea of being somewhere

ROB BOER

from the start – the pub underwent a huge refurbishment and changed owners when I joined, so I had a lot of freedom to put forward ideas and bring my vision to life.

Q Would you say you came to The Mutton with a particular style of cooking?

A No, the great thing about The Mutton is that we serve food from all over the world – we often have Asian or African inspired flavours on dishes. As a chef I am constantly learning and experimenting, I am very lucky with the incredible suppliers close to the pub, which means I can use locally sourced food where possible.

“WE HAVE A FREEFLOWING MENU AND LIKE TO HAVE SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE”

Q How have you approached the menus at The Mutton?

A We have a free-flowing menu, which means we do not change the whole menu at once. Some dishes come and go depending on seasonality or simply if we fancy a change. We like to have something for everyone, whether someone is coming in for classic fish and chips or something more unique.

Q What dishes/ingredients are you currently loving on the menus right now?

A We have a pork belly dish on the menu at the moment, where we cut the belly as thin as possible, dust with a fennel and chilli seasoning and then roll up and cook. When you slice it, you get a lovely pinwheel e ect and it’s a great way to get the spices into the pork. We also have a lot of fun with our ice creams; currently, we are serving sorrel ice cream, popcorn and fig leaf, but over the years we have had a whole array of weird and wonderful flavours!

Q Do you use local produce?

A Yes, we are blessed with some amazing suppliers close by. We have award-winning cheese makers less than five minutes away and vegetables grown even closer. We’ve also just launched a new daily ‘co ee morning’ o er, where we serve freshly brewed co ees and delicious pastries and breads sourced from a local bakery.

Q Do you have an idea of the kind of things we will be seeing on autumn menus?

A I have just curated a special five-course tasting menu in celebration of zero waste week, which we served on Thursday 5 September. Emphasising zero-waste principles, this menu showcased the finest local ingredients. My favourite dish on the menu was the mini lemon sole fillets, which are normally thrown away due to their small size. We served these with a homemade gremolata. I am also working on some exciting menus, incorporating a variety of game meats, such as venison.

Q What kind of experience do you want to o er at The Mutton?

A We strive to o er high quality food and service in a relaxed environment.

The Bellagio sofa, designed by Anders Nørgaard, exudes elegance and cosiness. The Bellagio is anything but ordinary thanks to the depth and intricacy that the stitching adds, creating a visual rhythm that captivates you.

SCULPTURAL SOPHISTICATION:

Introducing the Tivoli Coffee Table

BoConcept has introduced Tivoli, a stunning line of sculpture-inspired coffee tables that draw inspiration from the classic elegance of travertine. Tivoli’s travertineeffect surface oozes elegance, and its Roman architectural character lends a hint of old sophistication to modern homes. Designer Morten Georgsen approached Tivoli with a creative playfulness reminiscent of his early Playdough modelling days. According to Georgsen: “It was a very creative process because we were sculpting from 3D designs in a very free way.” Coffee tables made with this technique are not only useful but also artistic creations. Any room is elevated by Tivoli’s striking design, which turns it into an elegant and stylish gallery.

DINING REDEFINED: The Santiago Table

Another standout piece from the collection is the Santiago dining table, with its enticing curves and exquisite craftsmanship. The round table, which can accommodate up to eight people comfortably, is very small in size and was designed with practicality in mind. Obstacles are removed by the base, which is a column instead of legs, and an amazing touch is added by the ceramic top, which comes in Ash Grey, Brown, and White. This innovative circular configuration for the Santiago table expands from 135 cm to 181 cm in diameter with covertly hidden expansion leaves. Santiago is the epitome of understated elegance.

DESIGN EYE

The eponymous founder of Anne Haimes Interiors takes us behind the scenes of a complete renovation of an exquisite family home in Henley

This is a beautiful period home, occupying a prime corner site on one of the most desirable roads in the market town of Henley-on-Thames. The home needed a complete renovation to bring it up to modern standards.

The property had formally been a nunnery, after which it had been earmarked for flats, then hurriedly put back together and sold as a family home. As a result, it required a considerable amount of TLC, but still had many of the characteristics of a period property to build from.

It’s a six-bedroom period home set over three floors in an elevated position with great views over Henley-on-Thames. After 11 years of living in the property, during which time our clients started a family, they were ready to refurb their period property home.

The extent of building works required was minimal, but the property had been tinkered

with by previous owners and required some reconfigurations and space planning to improve the general flow. The remainder of the brief included installing a new heating system, a new kitchen and utility room, general cabinetry throughout, improved storage, new bathrooms, lighting design, redecoration, furnishings, and furniture throughout. Essentially, it was a whole house renovation.

It was important to the clients that they had a mature and elegant home that truly reflected their tastes and personalities. As is normal practice on all our projects, we worked extensively with our clients in building a brief, to make sure we properly understood how they use their homes, and ensured the design was completely bespoke to them.

As with many old houses, the issues we faced included areas of damp and poor construction of some sections of flooring on the ground floor. The property was only partially wired for lighting, and the large orangery had no central heating. While the clients, who are both busy professionals, were happy to move out of their home during the refurbishment, they were keen

The master bedroom and en-suite is a show stopper on the first floor of the property

to move back by the end of the year, giving us only four months to complete the entire renovation, which also presented challenges.

Planning

A full survey was undertaken, and a structural engineer appointed to check a couple of areas of concern in the property. We reviewed old planning applications to get a better understanding of some of the oddities of the house and the history of some of our findings.

Time was spent with the clients to understand their vision, their preferences and aversions, and the dynamic they desired for their home. We explored what they needed from it day-to-day and how they envisioned living in it.

A full scope of works was finalised and issued to the selected builders and trades to provide competitive costs and an accurate timeline on the project. Concept schemes were prepared and presented and once agreed we drafted detailed schemes and a comprehensive design package.

The four-month timeline, damp in many of the walls, and persistent bad weather affecting specialist finishes all threw up issues.

Design Solutions

The new layout created a kitchen that opened onto a warm and inviting snug area and provided a relaxed area for the family to enjoy movies together. Within the snug, bespoke cabinetry was introduced to house the TV and include niches and zones to display items the family

“We wanted to breathe new life into the property”

had enjoyed collecting while travelling the world together.

The orangery was transformed into a light, airy room to entertain family and friends with a large dining table, around which we planned a mix of benches and individual seats.

The more formal sitting room, positioned in the centre of the property, had no natural light so it was opened up and a large Crittall-style screen was added leading into the orangery, allowing an abundance of light to filter through.

Classic Howard-style sofas, cabinetry and lighting were specified together with a colour scheme of jewel colours, to create an area to sit back and relax after a long day. A peaceful place to sink away and read or an ideal place to snuggle on a winter's night.

A family study was elevated with a new scheme and the introduction of extensive bespoke cabinetry and bookshelves. The original wood floor throughout the entrance hall, study and orangery, which had become dark, dull and worn was brought back to life through renovation and re-finished with a lighter stain. In the spacious porch, the wooden floor was replaced with decorative floor tiles. Bespoke bench seats were fitted on each side, featuring drawers beneath for additional storage. Panelling was introduced

The kitchen features space to entertain, which was a feature in the orangery too

to the walls of the entrance hall and continued along the staircases and landings on the first and second floors.

On the first floor we created an elegant and refined master bedroom and en-suite, using striking Lewis and Wood wallpaper. The master dressing room featured a sofa bed allowing for extra sleeping space if needed, set with the new wardrobes which in part had glass fronted panels, altogether providing plenty of storage.

The second floor was a more fun, vibrant space dedicated to the couple's two children, giving them space to relax and hang out. The rooms, being at the top of the house, were smaller and had the angles of the eaves to plan around. By planning how we placed the built in cabinetry we were able to smooth out some of the awkward recesses and gain space. As a result of this we were able to provide two double bedrooms, a dressing room and a bathroom. Within a breakout space on the top landing, we introduce an existing sofa, which we reupholstered in a soft ducked ikat print and TV, to create a snug area for the children to hang out with their friends.

Conclusion

When we started this project, it was important to us that we created a family home that not only highlighted the beautiful period features of a heritage property, but also represented the family that lived there. We wanted to breathe new life into the property and create a space that the occupants felt represented them, making them feel proud to call the house a home. By designing around the family's ornaments and artwork we believe we have achieved this, whilst also securing the house's future for years to come.

As the client, Lucy Sheikh, says: "We cannot say thank you enough for the remarkable job you did on our house – an incredible transformation, which has been universally admired. You were full of wise advice, astute design ideas and above all you and your wonderful team were a delight to deal with. It is clear why you have built such a successful and enduring business."

Jenny Weiss and Helen

Bygraves,

founders of Hill House Interiors

, are celebrating 25 years in business together by launching a new lifestyle collection

Hill House Interiors is the fruit of a 25-year friendship between its founding partners, Jenny Weiss and Helen Bygraves. Their creative collaboration is built on a shared belief that beautiful surroundings can transform people’s lives. With a global reach, Hill House Interiors works on high-end residential projects in locations as diverse as London, New York, Lake Como, Antibes, the Bahamas, Ibiza and LA – not forgetting Berkshire, with one of their projects here featured on these pages. The two tell Absolutely how everything has come together over a quarter of a century.

Q Before Hill House Interiors, what were your respective backgrounds in the industry?

HELEN For the first 20 years of my life, I trained professionally in dance. This discipline instilled in me a strong sense of focus, precision, and dedication. As I grew, my passion for the arts and expression blossomed. I had always been drawn to the beauty of interior design, and the attention to detail and drive I developed through my training made pursuing a career in design a natural and perfect fit.

JENNY Fashion has always been a passion of mine, deeply inspired by art, film, theatre, and costume design. These elements of broader culture continue to influence and enrich our work. I cherish the way each of these inspirations contributes to our creative process. Much like Helen, I have always felt a natural calling to create beautiful things. This shared drive fuels our dedication to crafting exquisite, one-of-a-kind designs.

Q Why did you want to launch a business together?

JENNY We met in the 90s through our husbands and instantly became close friends. At that point in our lives, the timing was perfect. We’d both had children and we were ready to embrace the next chapter of our careers. With a shared passion for beautiful homes, it didn’t take long to realise we had similar interests and influences, making a partnership an exciting prospect. Our interior styles harmonised beautifully, yet with distinct nuances that enrich our perspectives, offering diverse and sophisticated viewpoints for our discerning clients.

Q Was it difficult to get off the ground?

HELEN We really valued the opportunity to work with one of our very first clients, Octagon, who truly understood the value of exceptional interior design. With the right budget to achieve the perfect aesthetic, it empowered us to explore striking and innovative design approaches for their homes. This quickly earned us a devoted following and significant attention, with many eagerly anticipating our next project – quite a feat in the days before social media.

Q How do you look back on your early days?

JENNY Looking back, it’s truly remarkable to see the journey we’ve undertaken. In the early days, it was just the two of us, often working from our homes, driven by passion, vision and tenacity.

HELEN We could never have imagined that our modest beginnings would evolve into a thriving studio with a team of nearly 40.

Jenny and Helen have taken on projects across the world and in the UK, including this stunning residence in Berks
JENNY AND HELEN

Q How did you want to be different?

HELEN Our core ethos is to create homes that truly embody each client’s unique personality and lifestyle. The design should reflect who they are, their values, beliefs, and tastes. It serves as both a stage set and a backdrop to their life.

JENNY It wasn’t necessarily a conscious decision to be different; rather, we’ve always strived to be innovative and stretch the boundaries, believing that nothing is too difficult or impossible to create.

Q How do you two work together?

JENNY We each have our own strengths and styles, yet our principles are perfectly aligned. Both of us have a very keen eye for detail, which is essential in our line of work. We take a very hands-on approach, collaborating closely with each client to offer a bespoke service that covers everything from interior architecture to the in-house florist we work with. The devil is in the details, and having two pairs of eyes is invaluable when it comes to perfecting our designs for clients.

Q Have you changed over 25 years?

HELEN We’ve accumulated invaluable experience over nearly three decades and as with any business, we’ve experienced a mix of highs and lows – all of which we’ve learnt from. Despite this, we remain the same passionate and tenacious individuals we were at the start and our drive to push our business forward is as strong as ever. Over the years, we’ve come to understand the immense value of loyalty. We naturally form long-lasting relationships with our clients, resulting in repeat business across generations.

Q Why did you want to mark this anniversary by launching a lifestyle collection?

HELEN We’re so proud to have been working together for over 25 years. Reaching this milestone is no small feat, and it felt only natural to celebrate it with something special while continuing to challenge ourselves in expanding the brand. We aimed to introduce a collection that combines practicality with style, one that could be seamlessly

integrated into our latest projects and appeal to retail clients and other designers alike.

Q What will the collection feature?

JENNY There are five main strands to the collection currently: furniture, indoor and outdoor cushions, rugs, and trimmings. The furniture was our starting point, with the addition of accessories to create a cohesive collection. Our main source of inspiration comes from nature, and is the central theme that flows through when you look at the materials used, the design details and textured finishes.

Q What projects do you look back on with fondness?

HELEN We’ve had the pleasure of working on many wonderful projects over the years – too many to mention, really. If we had to pick one, perhaps the Zagaleta villa we completed nearly 15 years ago stands out. It was our first overseas project, introducing us to new territory and unique challenges. Yet, the final result was breathtaking. The clients were delightful to work with, and their reaction on handover day was unforgettable. It was an incredibly emotional moment, making the entire endeavour truly worthwhile.

PERFECT TEN

TNick McColgan: from boat builder to awardwinning interior architect

hirteen years ago, Nick McColgan, founder of Snug Kitchens, embarked on a lifechanging journey, sailing a boat he built across the Atlantic with his wife. After falling seriously ill on a remote Caribbean island, a doctor diagnosed his burst appendix, saving his life. “It’s a cliché, but a neardeath experience shifts your perspective on everything,” Nick reflects.

Starting as a boat builder, he moved into kitchen fitting and later spent 18 years as a designer at Poggenpohl in London. Tired of the long commute, Nick launched Snug Kitchens closer to home in Hungerford, where he lives with his wife, children, and two Labradors.

Celebrating its tenth anniversary, Snug Kitchens specializes in large open-plan spaces, operating mostly through referrals. Supported by a talented team, Nick focuses on creativity and long-term client relationships, only taking on projects that inspire him. We spoke to Nick about Snug and what he expects to see in the kitchen industry over the coming months.

Q What are the biggest trends you’re seeing right now in kitchen design?

A Families are moving towards open-plan living, preferring to cook, dine, and relax in one expansive space. My recent work with top chef Alain Roux on his new culinary school at the Waterside Inn has underlined how professional efficiencies and workflow can be integrated into a domestic setting.

Q How are sustainability and ecofriendly materials influencing modern kitchen designs?

A Sustainability and the integration of the kitchen with outdoor spaces are shaping contemporary finishes. We’re moving away from cold, hard materials towards warmer, more organic surfaces. Wood finishes, natural stone, and earthy tones are now favoured for creating inviting, relaxed atmospheres.

Q What are some innovative tech features you’re excited about?

A Technology is revolutionising kitchens with the Internet of Things. Imagine being

able to preheat your oven remotely via your phone, receiving updates from Alexa about your laundry, or having a hob that automatically synchronises with the extractor fan. Innovations such as concealed cordless charging stations are enabling us to design cleaner and more sophisticated spaces.

Q What role does colour play in today’s kitchens?

A Colour trends in kitchens evolve with both fashion and practicality. While trendy colours might be suitable for less permanent elements, enduring finishes are determined by how we use the space. Currently, expansive familyoriented areas that integrate seamlessly with gardens are popular, featuring green hues and wood finishes complemented by neutral limestone flooring. These choices are akin to the classic “little black dress” of kitchen design, offering timeless elegance.

Q How are you adapting your designs to accommodate people working, cooking, and entertaining all in one room?

“Colour in kitchens evolve with fashion and practicality”

A Our approach to designing multifunctional spaces is holistic. Open-plan kitchens must be integrated with the overall living space, which is why our practice specialises in interior architecture rather than just kitchen design. These areas are family-centric zones that incorporate a cosy nook, informal dining, and the kitchen itself – each element carefully prioritised.

Q What emerging trends do you think will shape the future of kitchen design?

A As open-plan living becomes more established, we’ll see a shift towards brokenplan living. This will involve introducing visual or physical partitions to define distinct areas while maintaining a sense of openness. Warm finishes will remain popular, and appliances will be increasingly integrated. Kitchens will continue to evolve, resembling furniture more and more, blending seamlessly into the overall design of the space.

Open-plan living: where cooking, dining, and relaxing blend seamlessly into one inviting space.

“Tiles are a versatile design element that can set the tone for your bathroom’s aesthetics”

WChange

Ripples show how tiles can make a big difference to your bathroom

hen it comes to updating your bathroom, tiles can be a game changer. Senior designer, Leanne Robey, from Ripples Newbury, explains how.

Setting the Style

Tiles are a versatile design element that can set the tone for your bathroom’s aesthetics. Whether you’re aiming for a sleek modern look or a classic vintage charm, tiles offer endless possibilities.

MODERN APPEAL: Large-format tiles in neutral tones create a clean, contemporary appearance, making the space feel open and airy.

TIMELESS ELEGANCE: Classic subway tiles or intricate mosaic patterns provide a sophisticated and enduring style.

BOLD STATEMENTS: Vibrant colours and patterns can serve as focal points.

Enhancing Visual Appeal

The aesthetic appeal of your bathroom can be significantly improved with tiles. Their diversity in style promotes artistic expression and can support the development of a unified aesthetic. There are several approaches to integrating them into your bathroom. Using feature walls composed of textured or patterned tiles is one way to create a beautiful focal point. The second is to select floor tiles that are strong, low maintenance, and visually striking. The third is to concentrate on tiling the area behind the washbasin or bathtub to add visual appeal.

Creating a Sense of Space

Tiles can also influence how spacious or cosy a bathroom feels. Light-coloured tiles and large formats can make smaller bathrooms appear larger, while darker or patterned tiles can add warmth and intimacy to more expansive spaces.

SMALL BATHROOMS: Light and neutral tiles can visually expand the space, making it feel more open and inviting.

LARGE BATHROOMS: Rich textures and bold

designs can make large bathrooms feel more intimate and comfortable.

Adding Luxury and Comfort

Tiles can elevate the feel of your bathroom. Features like heated floors or natural stone tiles can transform a bathroom into a spa-like retreat. Tiles are more than just a functional element; they’re a transformative design feature that can elevate the style, functionality, and comfort of your bathroom. By choosing the right tiles, you can create a space that not only meets your needs but also reflects your personal style and adds a touch of luxury to your daily routine.

All hands to the PUMP

What’s it like having a heat pump? Max Waddingham of Good Energy explains all

Q Do heat pumps work well in ordinary homes?

A I lead the heat pump team at Good Energy and wanted to practice what I preach. I live in a 1985 four-bed detached house, with my wife and our two young children. Our home is EPC D rated, with no insulation improvements and with ordinary radiators throughout.

We had an ageing and inefficient gas boiler, which was getting less reliable and leading to expensive energy bills, so it felt like the right time to upgrade to a heat pump. Our heat pump survey showed that a heat pump would work well at our house without any new radiators or additional insulation.

Q How was your heat pump installation?

A I felt very confident in my decision to get a heat pump, but I did have some concerns about how my family would manage without heating during the installation, which took place during a sub-zero spell in December 2022.

Our heat pump installation took three days, with a team of three arriving at around 8.30am on the first day. There were minimal disruptions to our daily routine. They replaced the hot water cylinder on the first day, ensuring we had hot water before the kids returned from school. The team were mindful of our home and gave us lots of notice before significant changes, such as a short period when our electricity was turned off on the last day.

After a few hours of the house temperature dropping to around 8°C, the heat pump quickly brought it back to a very comfortable 20°C.

Q What has been the result?

A I am extremely satisfied with both the heat pump installation process and the end result. Our house is consistently warmer than ever, maintaining a comfortable 20°C throughout the day and 18°C at night. The noise and smell of our old boiler is gone, and our carbon emissions are hugely reduced.

Q Has there been a cost difference?

A Since the installation, our heat pump has performed exceptionally well. Over the past year, its efficiency has been an average of 411%, though it could be higher if I didn’t prioritise using cheaper periods of electricity to keep running costs down. In comparison, my old boiler was only 68% efficient.

Our heat pump has provided more consistent comfort while reducing our heating costs by around £20 per month. As it runs off electricity, we recently made the decision to get solar panels installed too, which will provide a lot of the power our heat pump needs throughout the year.

SEASONAL

REFRESH

Enjoy nature’s time to plant this autumn

As the summer flowers fade, autumn is the perfect time to refresh your garden. Autumn is nature’s planting season so there is plenty you can do to create stunning late-season colour. The warm and moist soil conditions provide the perfect planting environment to help roots establish, resulting in healthier, stronger plants. It is a time to tidy, rake, deadhead and clear beds of any debris. Stubbings Garden Centre, just outside Maidenhead, have knowledgeable and friendly staff who will give you advice on what is in bloom this time of year to brighten up your outdoor space.

You can add splashes of colour to patios, balconies, beds and even around your front door with autumn-flowering bedding plants. It is a great idea to select bulbs that flower at different times to give you colour throughout the season (early spring: daffodils, late-flowering: tulips and alliums). We love the joyful ‘Tete a Tete’ dwarf narcissi,

fragrant hyacinths and gentle crocuses. Improve your soil with organic matter such as compost or manure to retain moisture, suppress weeds and help your plants thrive. Stubbings Garden Centre have a great range of peat free options to help your garden thrive and can even deliver locally.

The summer may have taken its toll on your lawn so autumn is also a wonderful time to give it some TLC. Rake up leaves and moss to prevent waterlogging and, if you can, use a lawn treatment and fix bare patches with seed. Now is also the perfect time for planting fruit, both soft fruit (including raspberries, blackberries, gooseberries and rhubarb) and fruit trees (such as apples, pears, plums and cherries).

The end of summer does not mean you cannot still enjoy your garden blooming and growing. For inspiration and ideas, visit Stubbings Garden Centre to make the most of your garden this season. It is located just to the west side of Maidenhead off the A404M, 5-10 minutes from both the M4 and M40.

The secret to a good garden is its structure, and a hedge naturally establishes that, creating a framework that will convey a sense of scale. Here is how you can achieve the perfect structure:

BOUNDARIES AND PARTITIONS

Hedges make some of the best boundaries and dividers. Using hedging to separate your garden into ‘rooms’ or areas is a good option, as they can channel or block views. Low hedges can act as physical barriers too without blocking views, while taller hedges create an outline and can also provide a backdrop for focal points.

BACKDROP AND COLOUR

Instant hedging provides a lush green backdrop for other planting. Depending on how the light falls you will see the colour and texture change as well

OUT

What makes a good garden? The experts at Practicality Brown reveal

as attractive shadow play. It’s the perfect way to show off your flowering plants that are bursting into bloom in spring, and of course evergreen varieties will even make the view less bare and colourless in winter.

SHELTER AND PROTECTION

Hedges give your garden more shelter and protection because the wind is broken up by the hedging. With a fence or wall, the wind whistles over the top and can land on the other side with some force, leaving delicate flowering plants or sheltered seating areas exposed to the elements.

PUNCTUATION, CONTRAST AND FRAMING

Just as commas break up a sentence, gardens need their punctuation points too. Lavish borders need a little geometry to give them structure and instant hedges are ideal for creating this as well as providing contrast for wilder plantings.

WHY CHOOSE PRACTICAL INSTANT HEDGE™

all

Practicality Brown have grown and supplied mature instant hedging to garden designers, landscapers and private clients for over 20 years, and know that their clients appreciate the benefits of these mature hedges, without having to wait for them to grow.

Pioneering Work

The evolution of teaching STEM in schools, as seen at Downe House in Berkshire

In our fast-paced world, STEM subjects are constantly evolving with respect to the content being taught in classrooms today. Most recently, there is a notable shift moving away from teaching traditionally pure STEM topics and as teachers, we are now delivering the content in a manner that is more relatable to students. This applied approach helps students to appreciate more fully how the topics they are studying are not just of benefit for their academic development, but also how they translate outside of the classroom too. Likewise, the idea of discovery-based learning is being more intricately implemented in a way that ensures students still remain active in their learning, but without the loss of focus on the core content. This has been excellent in allowing students to develop their skills in crucial areas such as problem solving, creativity and critical thinking. Learning is much more inspiring when given as a

problem to overcome as opposed to simply rea rming that facts already given.

Despite the evolution in how we are teaching STEM subjects today, there are still barriers to progress. Largely this is attributed to perception and stereotypes. While the gender and diversity gaps within STEM are closing, many students still perceive STEM subjects as intimidating and/or careers in STEM fields as being unattainable for them. A further barrier, but certainly an exciting one, is the pace at which STEM is evolving from a technological perspective.

THE USE OF APPS

More and more teachers are using apps for knowledge as well as to support teaching in STEM today. The clear advantage here is the ability to provide more tangible representations of what are otherwise abstract concepts – for example, the structure of an atom or the interactions between cells. Certain apps

also enable institutions to diversify their methods of teaching practice allowing access for a broader range of neurodiverse students. Simulations of practical work through the use of apps also allows schools to be more environmentally friendly as this approach reduces consumables.

The way we teach STEM subjects today also supports the development of other soft skills for students which translate in the future world, but may fall outside of the typical STEM remit. It is always good practice as a teacher to look at what the current skills gaps are in the job market right now, but also to investigate what the predicted essential skills will be in the decades to come. By doing this, practitioners can work backwards to ensure that students are provided ample opportunities to develop these skills throughout their educational journey.

As Head of STEM, we are always looking at ways to boost the teaching of these subjects and as a school we are

looking at a number of techniques. For instance, the creation of the Head of STEM position itself gives an incredibly clear message about a school’s commitment to ensuring that STEM is a cornerstone of the education delivered. As a girls’ school, we feel strongly that our students should ‘see it to believe it’ and as a result we provide them with ample opportunities throughout the year to see and meet other female role models who are and have been successful in STEM related careers and disciplines. The school also runs two STEM magazines, the first is called Pioneer and is pitched at our lower school students; this looks to foster a love of learning in these subjects. The second publication is called Origins, and is focused more on the older year groups, made up primarily of student-produced content.

PEER-TO-PEER TEACHING

In order to continue to deliver a highquality education to the students, for

“The way we teach STEM supports other soft skills”

STEM subjects in particular, we are beginning to incorporate more AI (Artificial Intelligence) and VR (Virtual Reality) into our provision with recent workshops aimed at exposing students to the opportunities it brings with it. We have also created several student-led societies, such as a Dissection Society, STEMsoc, Medsoc and Physics & Engineering Society. These provide a wonderful platform for peer-to-peer teaching to take place as well as content and resources for students to trial and further enrich their experiences in the STEM fields.

“We ensure our students continue to be inspired by STEM”

To showcase the talent amongst our students and to encourage complex problem-solving challenges, we recently hosted a STEM Symposium in collaboration with another school. Our students worked in teams to complete an array of STEM challenges that pushed them beyond the curriculum. The team-led event was designed to promote collaboration and collective problem-solving across four of the STEM subjects including maths, computing, chemistry and biology, with one complex challenge for each subject. Each challenge at the Symposium was designed so that collaboration, rather than individual thought, was essential for success. The challenges included tasks such as identifying

patterns in prime numbers, nature’s cures for scurvy, identification of ions and decoding encrypted messages. For each task, one member of each team was provided with some prior reading ensuring that all students had the opportunity to lead the team.

SOFT SKILLS BEYOND STEM

We found that students from both schools really immersed themselves in the tasks and understood the importance of team work to ensure success. The range of talent was impressive, and the students showed themselves to be incredibly adept at applying new knowledge in order to solve the problems posed. Our students found the new areas of STEM inspiring,

and the event gave them a taste of what further studies in each of the fields might be like, beyond secondary education. Increasingly, feedback from industry is that students, whilst knowledgeable in their fields, are lacking in some of those fundamental soft skills such as communication, critical thinking and problem solving. Events like this recent STEM symposium provide students with further opportunities to develop these skills to ensure that their education is not just about achieving excellent grades, but also about continuing their successand making an impact once they leave school. All of these initiatives also help us as teachers to underpin what is being delivered in lessons and to ensure that our students continue to be inspired by STEM and ultimately look to further their education in STEM related subjects when they reach sixth form stage and also beyond as they navigate potential career options in the future.

It would be fair to say that over the last five years the world has faced greater challenges than at any time in recent history. Climate change, a global pandemic, the growth of AI and Robotics, and widespread conflict have all threatened peace and security. If mankind has been at the root of these problems, then it is both uniquely placed to find solutions and morally obliged to do just that. It seems then that studying STEM subjects – Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths – has never been more crucial for both boys and girls. Joshua Webber, Head of Careers at Wellington College, has this to say: “Many students at Wellington opt to study STEM subjects during sixth form, with Mathematics and Physics being particularly popular choices. STEM disciplines are excellent for cultivating a solid foundation in problem-solving, critical thinking, analysis, and research skills, all while fostering curiosity and a passion for learning. This blend not only

nurtures deep thinkers with a solid academic foundation, well-equipped for higher education and beyond, but also fosters innovative minds.”

All students at Wellington study Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology GCSEs, but many also take courses in Design Engineering while Computer Science is an increasingly popular option. After GCSEs the students go on to follow either A-levels or the IB Diploma, and the STEM subjects are thriving.

Nevertheless, the global picture is not so rosy, and one issue that deserves attention is the gender gap in STEM: women make up only about 28% of the STEM workforce in the world, with only 35% of students in Higher Education being female, a disparity even more pronounced in subjects like Physics and Engineering. At Wellington, however, 40% of our Physics sixth form students are female, with significant numbers entering HE STEM courses, and 22% from last year’s sixth form cohort have gone on to study STEM courses at university, of which 43% are girls.

One STEM co-curricular activity that has proved popular for girls and boys at Wellington seeks to apply engineering design skills to find energy solutions. The Green Power Education Trust inspires young people to excel in STEM through a unique challenge: to design, build and race an electric car. Wellington embraced this project four years ago, and a committed team of young engineers, designers, and drivers has achieved considerable success both on and o the track. The Wellington team, which includes girls and boys, has won through to the 2024 finals and will be seeking to set new speed and distance records at the iconic Goodwood circuit this autumn.

So at a time when studying STEM subjects has never been more important, schools like Wellington are fully committed to educating the problem solvers of the future.

THORNGROVE SCHOOL

In April 2024, Thorngrove School welcomed bees with the arrival of two hives in their purpose-built apiary. This exciting initiative was made possible thanks to two dedicated members of sta who completed a rigorous 12-week training course – 6 weeks of theory and 6 weeks of hands-on practical experience – through the Newbury Bee Association. With their newfound expertise, they are now sharing their knowledge with pupils, enriching their learning and fostering a connection with nature.

Each term a group of pupils will learn more about the bees as part of the Thorngrove ‘Be’ Enrichment Programme. The programme sees pupils across the school undertake various extra-curricular activities within one of four areas – Be Creative, Be Challenged, Be Community Minded and Be Curious. To mark World Bee Day in May, a group of pupils hosted a special assembly. They introduced the bees to the rest of the school, sharing the journey so far and teaching their peers about the importance of bees in our ecosystem. The assembly not only celebrated the new hives, but also helped students understand how bees contribute to the environment and why their protection is vital. Over the summer, they proudly harvested their first crop of honey. They are thrilled to share that this initial harvest is expected to fill approximately 40 jars, marking a significant and exciting milestone in their beekeeping journey. thorngroveschool.co.uk

The start of term is an exciting time in any school, but for Long Close School in Slough, this autumn term is particularly special. The popular school, situated next to the leafy Upton Court Park, will be welcoming their new Headteacher – Dr Richard Robson – who joins Long Close following a number of years leading Westholme School. Westholme was awarded Independent School of the Year in 2023, and Dr Robson is looking forward to bringing the

same culture of academic rigour and innovation to Long Close School.

Dr Robson says: “Long Close has a very distinctive warm family feel that simply charmed me from the first moment I visited this lovely school. I have been an independent school Head for over ten years, and Long Close’s authentic togetherness and community is something that I’m looking forward to becoming part of.”

As both an experienced Headteacher and a qualified School Inspector, Dr Robson has extensive experience at all levels – from leading a school to an ‘excellent’ inspection outcome, to implementation of pupil focus and challenge

initiatives, to ensuring every pupil has a chance to be listened to and reaches their full potential.

Underpinning the academic success of students, a focus on wellbeing and positive mental health is a priority for the whole team. Long Close understands that when children feel confident and secure to learn in a positive and supportive environment, they will succeed.

“LONG CLOSE HAS A VERY DISTINCTIVE WARM FAMILY FEEL THAT SIMPLY CHARMED ME ”

“My son is thriving at the school and I believe that is all down to the teachers' care, dedication, the interaction and stimulating environment they create for the children. Each child is treated uniquely and their individual needs are catered for.” Long Close Parent feedback, 2024.

Long Close School welcomes children from 2–16 years, with many joining in Nursery and moving through the school until they sit their GCSEs in Year 11. Dr Robson is looking forward to getting to know all of the Long Close families and their children, as well as the broader local community.

101 Outdoor Arts

The Newbury artistic hub is celebrating a decade of creativity

Marking ten years as a national centre for arts in public space and artistic creation centre, 101 Outdoor Arts will mark the occasion with two major autumn events. Based on a former US nuclear airbase outside Newbury, the Corn Exchange Newbury’s 101 Outdoor Arts has grown to be a unique powerhouse of creativity, supporting the creation of hundreds of performances and installations destined to be showcased at festivals, major arts events and cultural programmes both across the UK and internationally.

With the support of Arts Council England and Greenham Trust, 101 Outdoor Arts has become a world-renowned centre for artist development, hosting hundreds of artists each year to create their performances and take advantage of the centre’s unique facilities, which include residential accommodation and scenic fabrication facilities.

To celebrate this milestone decade, the venue is presenting two major autumn events. Ablaze, held in September, was a large-scale free outdoor production in Newbury that attracted up to 10,000 people. A reprise of a 2013 event of the same name, Ablaze was the first production created at 101 prior to its o cial launch. Ablaze enchanted audiences with its mesmerising display of fire sculptures, transforming the canal and Victoria Park into a realm of flickering braziers and ingenious installations. Reflect. Reimagine. Redefine. Imagining the next 10 years of outdoor arts (27 November) is an industry visioning event that aims to look to the future of arts in public spaces, working in partnership with other national outdoor arts organisations including Outdoor Arts UK and Without Walls. On the evening of 27 November, 101 will host a celebration for its supporters, users and the wider arts industry, entitled A Dose of Double Digit Decadence – a chance for

people to connect, network and celebrate a fantastic decade of 101 Outdoor Arts.

Simon Chatterton, founder of 101 Outdoor Arts and Strategic Lead, says: “Ten years of 101 provides an opportunity to look back at our achievements over that time and celebrate the work of the artists who we have supported. Even more importantly though, we want to use this moment to bring our sector together to look forward at how outdoor arts can continue to flourish over the next decade. The arts are central to our quality of life and outdoor arts can play a unique role in celebrating our cities and countryside and bringing culture to people who would never step inside a theatre or gallery.”
