used to scoff when being told school would be the best days of my life, especially when my dear mum was once again trying to get me out of bed and on the bus in good time. But even though I love my life and career right now, I look back and have to admit that, yes, those wise people were right. I went to a local grammar school and struggled for the first three years there. I say struggle, basically I was just a lazy student, doing the minimal work to get by till the bell went and I could get back on the football pitch. I shudder when I think back to my assertion that 'footballer' was my desired career choice.
Then something happened. I suddenly had an insatiable desire to learn and a steely determination to prove some teachers wrong, who understandably doubted me around Year 9. I went on to achieve decent grades, discovered a route into journalism and here we are. But I think the biggest thing I take away from my schooldays are my lifelong friends –we meet up every month and still reminisce about days at Wallington County Grammar School.

Anyway, I hope this ramble is a nice introduction to our education special this month, where we visit the schools and talk to the teachers who have one aim: to offer an education to remember.

jewellery captures those magical moments and now she is expanding her collection. She talks to Absolutely about inspirations, family and Bucklebury
Tis a very personal one. “I wanted to make personalised jewellery that was hard wearing, eyecatching, top-quality but a ordable,” says the woman behind the brand, Rosie Florence. “Ever since I can remember, I haven’t liked wearing or buying the same things as everyone else, I always look for something unique. My brand o ers this to other people who are like me in this way. Since the start, the Signature range of men’s and women’s bracelets and necklaces has been the most popular range. I emboss personalised letters; dates, names, initials onto them. It creates a very distinctive, modern and unique look.”
Considering how popular Florence London is today, it seems all the more remarkable when the Bucklebury local takes
us back to the beginning. For example, when Absolutely asks if Rosie made jewellery regularly before launching her own business, she says: “Not aside from making jewellery for myself when I was a teenager.” She did, however, work across retail sectors from the age of 18, as well as spending six years marketing for a chain of restaurants in London, but it was time training horses that she says has been a key driver behind the success she has gone on to have. “That time was vital,” Rosie states. “There are only two things that I know for sure were direct influences on my business being a success. One is my background in horses and the other is my mother. Nothing makes you work harder and develop a level of grit quite like horses do. You have to work day in and day out without a break. Regardless of what is going on, you have to get up and get out, every day. There are no excuses. Physically and mentally, it built me into the person I am today. I became obsessed with building a cool, good looking
jewellery brand and one that I could have fun with. Jewellery is so adaptive; I knew that I could build a brand with my own spin on it and take it wherever I wanted to go.”
Florence London launched in 2017 and its Signature Bangle proved to be a big hit from the o . How would Rosie say she has changed since those halcyon days? “I am a lot braver now,” she considers. “I was very scared of doing the wrong thing back then, whereas now I realise that you must be doing things in order to learn. So now, I will try launching new products, try new events, try di erent angles of marketing and see what sticks. I am also a lot more data driven than I was back then, probably because I didn’t have much data! But now, I try and take next steps based on my numbers.
“Ideally, I am out and about finding inspiration from other people,” she adds. “I will people watch – look at what they’re wearing, their personality, and if I talk to them, I will get an idea of what is important to them; how, why and where
they shop for example. I look everywhere for design inspiration, from high end fashion houses to little markets. I was in the South of France last week and found a tiny jewellery maker in a market in a town called Uzes and fell completely in love with some colours she had chosen. Things like this I will remember for years.”
Highlighting the braver Rosie Florence, this year has seen the designer get stuck into a host of new product launches. “My team has grown this year enabling me to spend more time designing and so we’ve got lots of exciting lines launching,” she explains. “They include a new range of layering chain that look amazing with our chunkier bangles, a remodelled T Bar range, skinny men’s enamel cu s, new rings for men that I’ve never done before, new men’s
tag necklaces, a range of earring studs and, looking further ahead, some very unique enamel hinged bangles for Christmas.”
It sounds busy, all the more remarkable when you take into account Rosie has a young family too. “I am very lucky in that I work from home from my studio in the garden, so I can dip in and out of the house and the studio as much as needed,” she smiles. “I utilise the first and last hours of the day when the children are asleep. Then Monday-Friday we have a combination of a brilliant nanny and a good nursery that works really well for us at the moment. I do try to focus just on the children at the weekends.”
Home has been Bucklebury for three years. “ I absolutely adore the countryside and feel very much at home here.
Bucklebury is a stunning little place,” Rosie says. “My son is obsessed with Bucklebury Farm; particularly the tractors and the go-karts. My wind-down method has always been walking across Bucklebury Common – it’s so pleasing to watch how it changes through the seasons, it looks so gorgeous in the snow. And we’re all big fans of the Blackbird café’s co ee and cake!
“With a five month and a two and a half year old, at the moment I don’t have a huge amount of time to explore Berkshire, but I will do, when the children are a little older. There are a few places that come to mind;
lunch at Elcot Park – my mother lives next door so we have some lovely memories of going there. My sister lives in Hungerford and we love shopping on the high street there, especially looking for special pieces for the garden at Barrs Yard. I also love the two pubs in Stanford Dingley and walking around there is beautiful – so quiet and unspoilt. There are many, many places I’ve yet to explore and I can’t wait until I can go for long lunches in pub gardens with the children. I am a big fan of pub culture.”
That can wait, though, as Rosie has grand designs on continuing to build Florence London, although many have already embraced the brand’s typical look. “Chunky, stacked, eye-catching jewellery,” Rosie says, before adding with a smile, “usually personalised with a very special, sentimental memory.”

Absolutely decided to put Harriet on the spot and ask her to pick out five memorable parties…
“They pride themselves on being 24-hour party people”
EVENT ONE 700 Brazilians in Seville
Brief: A welcome party and wedding in Seville for a Brazilian client, for over 700 guests. Challenges: The obvious – organising and moving 700 Brazilians in the centre of Seville during the feria (Spanish street festival)! We also had to battle the streets of press, photographers and locals, all blocking the roads in hope of a glance of the bride. For the welcome party, we had just two hours to transform a museum into a nightclub (which had never been done
before), fit for top Spanish DJ duo, Mestiza, to perform. It was tight, but we did it!
Final Outcome: A phenomenal three-day wedding with a very happy client dancing the night away to the Gypsy Kings until 8am. Guests’ senses were tantalised from the very beginning, with stunning floral displays by Sally Hambleton and her team, truly bringing the feria to us, a 6 foot tall wedding cake flown in from Brazil and a top British DJ playing the early morning tunes. Memorable: Despite the logistical challenges during feria, it was amazing to showcase the city with its party hat on. The client was incredibly trusting and went with us on all of our design concepts and ideas. The highlight was a show by the Andalusian horses and the Gypsy Kings live, who had all ages dancing under the stars in our custom built nightclub.
EVENT TWO Ruby Wedding Anniversary and NYE Party
Brief: A special ruby wedding anniversary for a client who, having celebrated with only a handful of family 40 years ago, wanted to celebrate with his wife to mark this special milestone by celebrating at Spencer House with a wonderful party
SPANISH DJ DUO MESTIZA
THE SEVILLE WEDDING CAKE
THE SPENCER HOUSE SETTING
on 30 December, before a NYE party at their home the following evening.
Challenges: Obviously, planning any event during the festive period is a challenge, not to mention when the second event is in the client’s home! We had a short lead time on this and were dedicated to pull o our client’s visions. We also had to persuade our caterer, By Word Of Mouth, to open their kitchens when they would usually be closed for the festive period. It goes without saying that a two-day event also provides a few more challenges too!
Final Outcome: A spectacular celebration featuring a performance from the “bride” and a tear-jerking speech from the “groom”. A live harpist, five-course meal with each course paired to a wine from a year of either their anniversary, birthday or their sons’ birthdays, followed by a party. Our team also had the client’s home looking spotless before they woke up on New Year’s Day!
Memorable: Watching the London fireworks from the balcony following an epic 48 hours was certainly a highlight.
“It was a showcase to reflect the standard of the brand”
A delicious paired menu, a wonderful atmosphere and a fantastic start and finish to a brilliant year for PP!
EVENT THREE Schiaparelli
Brief: This was the launch of the Schiaparelli atelier in Harrods, therefore a showcase to reflect the standard of this top brand. It also meant we had two events across two sites, which always keeps us busy.
Challenges: Akin to Schiaparelli’s brand values, the client wanted the event to truly reflect the bold nature of their clothing. Daniel Roseberry was truly invested in the design, down to the finest of details, and worked alongside our team to bring this to life.
Final Outcome: A very happy client and a successful launch, with an A-list guestlist. Memorable: Working with a brand of this nature was a notable moment for Party Planners. It’s always refreshing when a client has strong views on their visions for an event, and working with Schiaperelli’s Creative Director was such fun!

Final Outcome: Bespoke mirror top tables were created to reflect not only the beautiful ornate ceiling and architecture, but also the light from the chandeliers; this is inspired by Louis XIV’s Galerie des Glaces and passion for mirrored glass, being the first to use it in large form, not shattered pieces. A stunning string quartet kitted out in Louis XIV dress played upon guest arrival. Fruit and vegetables featured in the glorious floral displays, inspired by the work of Grinling Gibbons, which are shown on the gilt doorways and panelling. In keeping with the theme, red grapes, pomegranates, strawberries, baby and heritage tomatoes, and red apples were used in excess creating a breathtaking display.
Memorable: Despite being a regular client, this specific event was incredibly special, planned right down to the finest of details.

Transforming Tintern Abbey into a Wedding Venue
Brief: With a love of surrealist art and architecture, the client wanted something that had never been done or seen before. For this wedding, we scoured the whole of Europe in search of a ruin that would allow us to deliver on this client’s extraordinary appetite for adventure and unique vision.
Challenges: Working with the very talented Graham Bell from Firecracker, we developed the concept of rebuilding a structure within a ruin so that guests would experience what it might have been to the backdrop of the still standing ruins. There were obvious challenges when building around a ruin to create not just a visually exciting venue, but also ensuring it was
guest and entertainment friendly.
Final Outcome: A breath-taking installation creating the illusion of guests dining under the stars. From the intricate detailing in the moss topped table decoration to the vast structure and out of this world cake, no stone was left unturned for this exquisite event.
Memorable: What isn’t memorable about this event?! This was the first time we built onto an existing ruin and created a one of a kind venue and an honour to build something both client and guests had never seen before. A landmark occasion for us and a memorable one for the client.

Sing came to Windsor in August to share the power of music
Fresh from their success on Britain’s Got Talent last year, The BIG Sing (who received four yeses and a standing ovation) extended their whistle-stop tour of the UK as they visited Windsor on Saturday 10 August for not just one, but three performances across the day.
With nearly 300 members in attendance, ranging from as young as 5 to as old as 80+, The BIG Sing performed on the day at The Long Walk, Windsor Bandstand and outside Windsor Castle. The performances aimed to bring together the Windsor community whilst also showcasing the very best of Britain to international tourists.
The choir (who have toured alongside X Factor icon Leona Lewis and performed for both Ellie Goulding and Tom Walker, as well as the runner up of The Voice Leah McFall) performed a myriad of popular and classic songs, which resonated with audiences young and old.
The BIG Sing, which was founded in 2011 by Gemma Francis and husband Howard, has spent the past 13 years helping to unite the local community and bring people together through the power of music. The popularity of the choir inspired them to found the charity arm, The BIG Sing Soul (a part of ‘Imagine the Day’) in 2017, which aims to make music accessible to as many people as possible and has raised an impressive £200,000.
Speaking on the success of the choir, its charity work, and the Windsor performance, founder and director Gemma Francis states: “It has been truly inspiring to witness the profound impact the choir has had on so many lives. When we founded The BIG Sing in 2011, my husband and I recognised a crucial need to create a sense
of community and bring people together through the power of music. What began as a small initiative has grown into a vibrant and supportive network that touches the hearts of countless individuals.
“Our performances in towns like Windsor have taken on an even greater significance. These events are not just about the music; they are about uniting people, fostering a strong sense of community, and spreading goodwill during challenging times. We believe that through our shared experiences and collective voices, we can make a positive di erence and bring hope to those who need it most.”

LIGHT SPEED
The lightest and most powerful series-production McLaren, the new V8-engined, rear-wheel drive 750S, is unashamedly a supercar for the purist, as James Fuschillo discovers
We all need a hero in our lives right now, and the super variety needs the right vehicle to go about their work –and the McLaren 750S would be that car. Laying eyes on it for the first time, the sleek and aerodynamic look really does scream Batmobile, especially if it came in all black, matte. And considering McLaren will customise the colour to whatever your heart desires, consider that a given.
Designed and engineered following meticulous analysis of the renowned McLaren 720S, the new 750S combines advances in weight-saving, powertrain performance, aerodynamics and dynamic excellence to elevate a benchmark driving experience to new heights. Around 30 per cent of 750S components are either new or changed
in order to deliver these improvements, and they are noticeable, from the way the car drives, to dealing with problems that suburban life may throw at you. Settling into the 750S, it’s probably the closest thing you can get on the ground that resembles being a fighter jet pilot. These cars are built for speed, but for me the level of comfort and security blew me away. Speed, however, is not forgotten. The engineering developments advance the renowned daily usability of the 720S, and yet the power and performance of the 750S is more full-blooded and undiminished than ever. Outright acceleration is phenomenal, with 0-100km/h (62mph) achieved in 2.8 seconds.
The interior is very minimalistic, but at the same time high tech. The 750S fuses innovative technology with exquisite materials, but most importantly is even more driver-focused in design. At the heart
of the driver experience are new displays, both for information and instruments, with the instrument display fitted to – and moving with – the steering column. This driver-centric display is mounted in a binnacle that has the controls to select Powertrain and Handling modes located on either side, meaning the driver can move e ortlessly between Comfort, Sport and Track Active Dynamic settings while keeping their hands on the wheel and a complete focus on the road ahead.
This also is a supercar for the petrolheads out there. The engine is located to the rear, but thanks to a fancy design feature, you can see inside the car into the engine bay. Come the night and the engine bay is illuminated red, which really does give the car the x factor. This is a car where you can not only admire its design, but also the mechanics that go into making it such a joy to drive. The exhaust system is another change
from the 720S. That had two circular exhausts at the back next to each tail light, whereas in the 750S it has been replaced by a much bigger, central exhaust with a completely di erent design, including a really sexy touch that assists with braking. Driver Downforce (active wing partially deployed, dependent on speed) is engaged when the Aero button is pushed in the cabin, increasing downforce levels during highspeed cornering. The design and positioning of the single, central exhaust pipe meant that the new active rear wing is positioned 60mm higher, its revised static position bringing additional powertrain cooling by drawing hot air out of the engine bay. It was a joy to take the 750S onto motorways and clear A roads, but I was also keen to put it through its paces through a suburban set up. A really good function on the car is McLaren’s Proactive Chassis Control linked-hydraulic suspension, a real game changer in a suburban area, enabling you to lift the car’s nose in four seconds at the touch of a button. The new-generation system delivers even higher levels of suspension performance and is integral to the outstanding dynamic abilities of the 750S. Comfort in design, but also in practice. The suspension springs are softer at the front

and sti er at the rear than in the 720S, which together with reconfiguration of both the passive and active elements of the bespoke valve stack and a new approach to tuning the suspension – adjusting the accumulators in the struts, which is used for the first time in 750S – benefits ride comfort, roll control, steering feedback and cornering balance.
The way the 750S handles is a dream, and also the acceleration o the mark. You can feel the raw power, it’s so responsive. When you are going up in speed so quickly you also need to have handling matching that and I thought it was a really well balanced car. The extraordinary levels of exhilaration, precision, agility, feel and feedback that the 750S delivers are immediately apparent to the driver, even at lower speeds – and its low weight is a key factor in its dynamic performance. At just 1,389kg (DIN), it weighs 30kg less than a 720S – a clear example of McLaren’s dedication to lightweight engineering.
VERDICT
With the new 750S, McLaren defines a new benchmark for supercar performance and driver exhilaration.

From Paw-tnership to split... How to safeguard your pet in a UK divorce
Divorce can be a challenging and emotional process with many aspects to consider. One often overlooked element is the day-to-day arrangements for beloved pets and the cost of their upkeep.
In the UK, pets are legally considered to be “chattels”, which are personal property like furniture or cars. This legal classification can complicate matters when it comes to deciding who gets to keep the family pet after a separation and who pays for them. The concept of ‘pet nuptial agreements’ is a growing trend that aims to address this issue proactively.
A pet nuptial agreement, sometimes referred to as a "petnup", is a legal document that outlines ownership and care arrangements for pets in the event of a divorce or relationship breakdown. It
is also possible to include arrangements for a pet in a pre-nuptial, post-nuptial agreement or a separation agreement.
Anyone who owns a pet will know that they often become adored family members, and their well-being can be a significant concern for both parties during a divorce.
A petnup ensures that both individuals’ attachments and the pet’s best interests are considered as well as providing clarity, preventing disagreements and the associated legal costs later on down the line.
“The concept of 'pet nuptial agreements' is a growing trend in the UK”
Unlike standard property division, a petnup allows couples to detail personalised arrangements that reflect the pet’s needs and the owners’ wishes. It can outline how the cost of the pet’s care will be divided. This can include everyday expenses like food and grooming, as well as medical bills and insurance. It can also include defining who will make decisions about the pet’s health and well-being, such as medical treatments or changes in routine. While pet nuptial agreements are not legally binding, if they are properly entered into then they are likely to be persuasive to the court in the event of a divorce or relationship breakdown.

José Pizarro Cava Brut
Nature ‘Gran Reserva’
£27.50
This delicious, balanced, yellow-gold Cava o ers an impressive release of fine celebratory bubbles. The exotic scent of peaches, pineapple and dried wildflowers reflect the structured tropical fruit flavours – pineapple, citrus peel, and sun-soaked citrus fruits.
In the mouth it has an old wine luxury and fullness reminiscent of a vintage Gran Reserva – it is bready and elaborated.
Pizarro Rosé, Forcallat £24.50
Pale in colour and boasting a fresh, floral nose with hints of red fruit, the palate is light, fresh and balanced. Made using 100% Forcallat grape variety, the grapes are harvested by hand without crushing, and naturally cold-soaked for 24 hours. The vines are grown in 35 year-old goblet-trained vines at an altitude of 600 metres above sea level, and sandy loam soil with limestone. Perfect for pairing with grilled meats, seafood, and salads, this elegant bottle is the perfect addition to any summer spread.
José Pizarro, Rare Solera PAP, Osborne £170.00
The Osborne family takes great pride in the wines of this Rare Collection, not only because they have passionately cared for them for decades, but also because every drop embodies their heritage and tradition. Adam Handling is one of the UK’s most in-demand chefs. He tells Absolutely about how it all began and why Old Windsor was perfect for one of his restaurants
Adam Handling MBE started out at Gleneagles 16 years ago where he was the first ever apprentice chef, before he went on to become Fairmont’s youngest ever head chef. Adam has a number of impressive awards under his belt, including Scottish Chef of the Year, British Culinary Federation’s Chef of the Year, and Chef of the Year in the Food & Travel Awards. The Frog, Covent Garden, is Adam’s flagship restaurant, but The Loch & the Tyne –L&T for short – is the group’s stunning restaurant and pub local to us, with guest bedrooms in the setting of Old Windsor. Absolutely sat down with the acclaimed chef to find out more about him and his cooking.
Q Did you pick up a love for cooking at an early age?
A When I was a kid, food wasn’t about enjoyment or experiences; it was about sustenance. With my dad in the army, I wasn’t expected or encouraged to pursue a career in hospitality. For me, cooking became a way to avoid university and jump straight into real work. I grew to love cooking through hands-on experience rather than dreaming of becoming a chef.
Q Why was the Gleneagles Hotel the perfect starting point for you?
A The brilliant late chef Andrew Fairlie took me under his wing – he was an amazing mentor and I fell in love with the camaraderie, the teamwork, the passion, the fire, the adrenaline, and then my love for experiencing food in a di erent way grew beyond just nutrition.
Q What elements of cooking did you take away from your time at Gleneagles?
A My group’s ethos is inspiration, motivation and education – and a lot of this came from my time at Gleneagles, learning the ropes and getting as much out of it as I put in. Hard work will always pay o .
Q Why did you come to London to continue your career?
A I wanted to experiment with flavours that reflect London’s status as one of the most multi-cultural cities in the world. Frog focuses on British food, inspired by the capital. The team forages locally
together and we make sure to use every part of our ingredients. Any byproducts from the restaurant menu are used to form the basis of the drinks on our cocktail list, eliminating food waste, and ensuring that we are celebrating British ingredients in all aspects of what we do.
Q You travelled the world to learn your craft, but why did Japan inspire you so much?
A When I came back to the UK, I was excited to adopt the Japanese philosophy that was commonplace in the places I’d visited – that ingredients should be used in their entirety, stressing the growing importance of sustainable dining. They opened my eyes to the ways in which you could and should use the entirety of animals and plants in cooking, and inspired me to start finding more ways to stretch ingredients as much as possible. This initially came out of a necessity to operate as economically as I could; operating sustainably came into practice when I couldn’t a ord to bin anything. It wasn’t about saving the world or being green fingered, although that was obviously a great byproduct of what we were doing. It was about respect for the produce and thinking about how to stay open going forward.
Q Why were you ready to launch Frog when returning to London?
A I’d always dreamt about putting British food on the map. Just as the French are known for their cooking, I wanted to put British food on a platform in a way that hasn’t been considered before and elevate its global perception. When I moved back to London, I had a very clear vision of what I wanted to achieve, so I was raring to go when I started planning the launch of Frog.
Q What did you want to o er there that was di erent?
A We o er relaxed, sustainable, fun fine dining. The reason I created my restaurants was to give people a space to go where, no matter who you are, how you dress or what you look like, you’ll be made to feel like you belong there and are comfortable experiencing our luxury dining experiences. Our focus on sustainable British luxury means that we use predominantly British produce, including produce that we’ve foraged ourselves, to not only replicate flavours that we have tried and loved abroad, but also showcase the very best ingredients the UK has to o er. They’re some of the best in the world and we use every single part; the snacks that you start your meal with at Frog are made from the trimmings from the main dishes,

AFTERNOON CURIOSITY
A SEQUENCE OF UNEXPECTED TREATS IN THE DRAWING ROOM
A unique intervention of afternoon tea to indulge in our elegant drawing room overlooking a quaint courtyard garden.
“Old Windsor has excellent opportunities for foraging”
infusing leftover ingredients into our own spirits in our bar laboratory. Everything is full cycle, and everything is delicious!
Q At that point did you have the grand plan to open other establishments?
A I wanted to share what di erent locations in the UK had to o er in terms of local foraged ingredients, and the beautiful settings in Old Windsor and Cornwall were the perfect places to explore next – well-known for their excellent local produce, from the seafood in Cornwall to the countryside of Old Windsor, which has excellent opportunities for foraging and wonderful farmed produce.
Q What attracted you to Old Windsor?
A What’s not to love? It’s the perfect countryside retreat, just an hour from London with Windsor Castle and beautiful attractions right on our doorstep. The ingredients from the gardens and orchards are ideal for our constantly changing sustainable menu. The
pub itself also seemed like it was meant to be. Surrounded by woodland with its own orchards, it’s an old building that we’ve made as sustainable as possible. It was originally two gamekeepers’ cottages and we’ve transformed it into the most beautiful pub.
Q How did you want to approach the menu at The Loch & The Tyne?
A The Loch & The Tyne is our most sustainable site yet – we want it to be as close to zero waste as possible. The food is elevated pub grub, with accessible luxury dishes for people celebrating or just enjoying a day/evening at their local! My vision for the pub was always for it to become a local favourite, a home-from-home for destination diners, who are able to relax in the comfort of a true English pub, whilst enjoying the quality of food which we love to provide.
Q Do you do anything di erent at The Loch & The Tyne?
everything throughout the site has been made with sustainability in mind. All the furniture is either upcycled or made with sustainable materials such as mango wood. We also o er experiences such as our classic car service, for collection and drop o from in and around Old Windsor, as well as to and from London. Guests love these tailored add-ons and also the homemade touches across the pub, like the hot water bottles we have that have been knitted by my mother!
Q Generally, what are you loving to cook right now?
A At The Loch & The Tyne, we have a ‘Chalk Stream Trout’ dish, made with trout from Hampshire, which we cure and cut into thin slices before serving with a sweet shallot dressing, parsley puree, pickled chillies, crispy garlic, and a chive oil. It’s so fresh and is a great mix of textures. One of my favourite dishes at our newly opened Tartan Fox in Cornwall is the ‘Roast rump of lamb, courgette, basil’, which uses some fantastic local ingredients, but interestingly, it’s our deep-fried Mars bar that seems to be the guest favourite!
Q You have won many accolades since those early days at Gleneagles. How does it make you feel? Which of these stand out for you?
A The proudest moment of my career so far has been receiving my MBE. It was a surreal moment – I’m still pinching myself! My goal has always been to show what British food is all about, in a sustainable and luxury way, and I hope I can continue to make the UK proud.

To those outside the poultry business, the “traditional” bit of their name might be misconstrued as a nod to the more than 100 years the Copas family have been farmers in Cookham Dean, the 67 years they have been raising award-winning turkeys, or possibly the starring role turkey has played on Christmas tables in the UK since Scrooge tipped a street urchin to purchase one for Bob Cratchit. Traditional isn’t simply a marketing-clever naming choice though, it’s a description of the technique behind their results – and it’s what makes Copas Traditional Turkeys Britain’s most delicious Christmas turkey. Technically speaking, traditional turkeys are “reared to full adult maturity in a natural environment and are never given additives for growth promotion”. Copas Turkeys are dry plucked and hand finished then hung for up to 14 days to develop that unique flavour for which they have become famous. Using a selection of carefully chosen traditional breeds to give a range of
sizes, Copas Turkeys enjoy their free-range lives in a natural environment that includes cherry orchards and grassy meadows.
The technical isn’t the full story for what makes Copas turkeys very, very special. There’s a lot to be said for having been in the turkey business for nearly 70 years. Tom C. Copas, Director at Copas Traditional Turkeys and The Copas Partnership (and son of the company’s founder, Tom A. Copas), has literally grown up in the family business. “I spent a lot of time packing rosemary as a kid on the packaging line,” says Tom, laughing at the memory of an early role. “I still don’t like rosemary today – I cook with it and use it, but I don’t like it. You couldn’t get the rosemary o your hands after packing box after box after box!”
Happily, his aversion to the herb that accompanies every Copas turkey hasn’t diminished his passion for carrying on the traditional turkey production methods his father chose and championed. Tom and his sta bring a sincere commitment to raising happy turkeys, and that happiness definitely shows in their flavour.
Ed Hurford, a member of the Copas team for more than a decade and currently Operations Director, is passionate when speaking about the importance of protecting and carrying on this timetested approach to sustainably raising the highest welfare birds. “We’ve always prided ourselves in the highest welfare and because our product is di erent, it’s stood the test of time,” Ed says. “There really is no comparison between a mainstream turkey and a traditionally produced turkey. We grow our birds to full maturity so the birds develop a fat layer.”
One of the two biggest secrets to Copas turkeys being delicious without requiring brining, excessive basting or professional culinary skills is that fat layer. The layer of fat that turkeys develop when raised to maturity contributes to a consistently robust flavour – not to mention a shorter cooking time.
The other key secret is game hanging (also known as “New York Dressing” or “Dry Aging”), essentially not cutting into the birds until they’ve hung for 14 days. This approach, which has been
used by meat producers for generations, preserves the birds while allowing the natural process that leads to the meat holding and retaining moisture. Tom says that game hanging “intensifies the flavour, improves the texture and makes the turkey more juicy and succulent – it gives you that ‘umami’ depth of flavour”. With a traditional turkey, there’s no need for Christmas Day hosts to stress about cooking. The home cook can rest easy, knowing that even if their Christmas pudding is too heavily brandied, their roast potatoes aren’t perfectly crisp or their pigs in blankets are a bit overdone, the turkey will come out perfectly with just a modest e ort. Simply season the bird and pop into a hot oven. There’s no need to baste, nor add oil or butter. Copas Traditional Turkeys even come with their very own pop-up timer to insert into the breast meat and pop up when the bird is cooked to perfection. It’s good to know that our national Christmas turkey tradition can be elevated by seeking turkeys bearing the Copas name.

The rise of Reformer Pilates… what’s the excitement all about?
In recent years Reformer Pilates has taken the world by storm, with its ability to sculpt and tone the body while improving flexibility, posture, and overall well-being.
What is it that’s attracting such a new wave of Reformer devotees across the world?
Unlike traditional exercise methods, Reformer Pilates o ers a low-impact workout that is gentle on the joints while still providing a challenging and e ective full body workout. Compared to mat Pilates, which is performed on the floor using weight as resistance, Reformer Pilates o ers added resistance through the use of springs and straps on the machine. TShoulder muscle EXERCISES
Why shoulder pain is common, how to avoid it – and what to do about it
By CARLOS COBIELLA
he shoulder joint is the most mobile joint in the body, which allows excellent function but makes it prone to injury and painful conditions. When something goes wrong, free movement and mobility can become extremely di cult and, in some cases, impossible. This can really hamper quality of life causing huge amounts of pain and discomfort. The shoulder joint works as a ball-and socket mechanism, with a small and shallow socket and quite a big ball on it. It is inherently unstable and in order to improve its stability we use the rotator cu muscles. This is a group of muscles and tendons that surround the shoulder joint and keep the ball in a stable fulcrum.
If you are experiencing shoulder pain it more often than not means that the rotator cu tendons have become irritated, inflamed or damaged somehow. It can be extremely painful and can make everyday tasks very di cult to complete.
Patients come to me for a number of reasons. They might have damaged their shoulder playing sport – especially contact sports like rugby – or they have fallen o their bike and damaged their shoulder. I also see people who have damaged their shoulder from repetitive exercises, particularly overhead. This causes overuse injuries that manifest
mostly on rotation i.e. impingement. Poor technique when exercising can also cause damage. The second group of patients are the 50+ age group, who are experiencing pain due to general wear and tear, as the soft tissues surrounding the shoulder degenerate with age. In these patients the threshold to overuse is lower and it is easier to cause damage.
In terms of treating the shoulder pain, it depends specifically on what the problem is. Problems caused by rotator cu dysfunction are generally amenable to physiotherapy treatment. This involves a hands-on component, with stretches and massage and an exercise programme designed to improve the function of the rotator cu muscles and thus the dynamic stability of the ball-andsocket joint. Sometimes these exercises can be very painful in an irritated shoulder and cortisone injections can help with the pain and improve the e cacy of the physiotherapy program: 70% of patients with rotator cu pain, without tears, will respond to this form of treatment within three months.

EXERCISES AND STRETCHES TO RELIEVE SHOULDER PAIN
Try these at home regularly to relieve shoulder aches and pains. However, if your pain is persistent after six weeks, consult your doctor who may put you in touch with a specialist.
1. The Crossbody Pose: Hold the right hand out in front of the body, reach the left hand behind the right elbow and pull the right arm to the left and across the chest. Hold in this position for 30 to 50 seconds and then release. Repeat this stretch 3 to 5 times.
2. The Pendulum Swing: Lean over and support your non-injured side with a table or chair. Allow the sore side arm to dangle down. Begin by drawing circles with your hand below – start small and then gradually increase the circles in size. Then perform the same exercise in reverse. Repeat throughout the day three or four times, especially first thing in the morning and last thing at night.
3. The Head Rotation: Sit upright on a firm-backed chair and tilt your chin toward your chest until you feel a deep stretch in the back of your neck. Lean the head to the left and then again to the right to feel the stretch on both sides. Aim for a minute on each side.

ANNA MOSS
HOME
Grown
Anna Moss reflects on five years of her interior design business, the joys of Henley and embracing the challenges of period properties
Q Were you a creative child?
A Yes, at school you would find me skipping my economics class for the art hut. I’ve always loved to paint and in particular abstract art. But really anything creative from DIY to gardening, I’ve always enjoyed turning an idea into a reality.
Q Did you have the ambition to become an interior designer early in life, or did that come much later?
A I was always creative, but also love understanding more about how businesses work. Interior design had always been my true passion, but years ago, it didn't seem like an accessible career path. After spending over a decade in marketing and advertising, I decided to pursue my dream. In 2019, I earned my Diploma and founded Moss Living Interiors.
Q Before launching Moss Living Interiors, were you dabbling in design, or was it a complete about turn for you?
A Very much so. I loved upcycling and DIY and any chance to redo a bedroom or space – really getting my hands on anything that could be brought back to life or rejuvenated. My godmother owns an interior design shop in Somerset and I spent a week designing and redoing her shop – that’s when I realised I loved it.
Q Was it a big decision to launch your own business?
A Well it’s a bit of a funny story really. I was sort of forced to take that final step, which is often the best way. I worked in automotive advertising for years, and I’d just gone onto
maternity leave and two days before going into labour I received a call to say they’d gone into administration. Over 100 of us lost our jobs, our earnings for that month and anything we were entitled to like my maternity pay, not to mention the stress at a time I thought I was going to settle into motherhood after years of hard work. Luckily, I had set up my business on the
side, earned my qualification and gained a few clients, and after my daughter was born, despite being in a global pandemic, I felt like it was now or never. I had always wanted to have my own business and it was the best decision I ever made.
Q How do you look back on the early days of the business?
A I just didn’t stop. Every evening and weekend was spent developing the business and it took a real toll on my family, not to mention trying to raise a newborn and navigate motherhood. Without their support I wouldn’t be where I am today, but I’m so grateful that I took the plunge.
Q It’s only been five years, but have you evolved in any way since the start of Moss Living Interiors?
A Absolutely, we now o er an e-design service that is more a ordable for those who want design support. It is a fully virtual service which gives you access to our expertise all from the comfort of your own home. It’s for those who are looking for design direction,
ANNA MOSS
but are happy to implement the work themselves in their own time.
Our new VR service is super exciting; clients can walk around the designed room with a headset on and really get a feel for what it will be like. This is particularly useful for new developments or spaces.
Q How do you like to work with a client?
A I love to spend time to really get to know my clients. For me it’s so important to have a good rapport. After all, we’re designing a space that they’ll spend every day in, so seeing them regularly but most importantly face-to-face is imperative for us.
Q What inspires design ideas?
A I love to gain inspiration from travel, but also from some of the fantastic events held across the year like the WOW House at Chelsea Harbour or Design Week in Clerkenwell. Not only do they inspire, but they give you the opportunity to reach new suppliers and products.
Q Do you think there is a typical Moss Living Interiors style?
A I always say our style is “where classic meets contemporary”. We love blending classic and contemporary styles to create a timeless space by layering and
A We have some lovely projects on at the moment including a complete redesign of a property in Henley. Although the house was only built 20 years ago, its timber construction can be quite dominating – a lot of oak and pine everywhere. But it has lots of light and fabulous views across the countryside, so we have been finding ways to mellow the space and instil a sense of nature and peacefulness in the house. I love it. We’re also working on several kitchen designs and even an outdoor dining and living space, which is a little di erent for us.
Q Whereabouts are you based and what do you love about the area you live in?
mixing textures, colours, patterns and proportions. Ultimately, the spaces in our projects are designed to stand the test of time; every piece has its place, its history and purpose, for a long time.
Q You have mentioned a Georgian property that was a stand out project for you before. Can you tell us more about it?
A It’s a fantastic Grade II listed Georgian property with the original parts dating from 1720 with later Regency and Victorian additions. I really love working on period properties, particularly when they’ve lost their spark. The 7,000 square foot house was completely redesigned to create a wonderful family home while still maintaining the historical integrity of the property. The drawing room alone is over 50 square metres, and despite its size, it’s been transformed into an interior of beauty. The walls have been panelled in a soft, warm pink and there are formal shapes among the furniture, and others that are squashier and more relaxed. Strong pattern makes its way in through the curtains and soft furnishings; it’s a timeless blend of historical architectures with contemporary finishes.
Q Are you working on many exciting projects now?
A We’re based just outside Henley-onThames, which is a beautiful place to be. I love being outdoors and spending time in the garden growing cut flowers or taking a walk in the Chiltern valley. You can find so much inspiration in nature through the seasons.
Q When you do get some free time, where do you like to go in the area?
A Being based in Henley means we’re surrounded by some fantastic areas. A favourite of mine is a day out to the Cotswolds. Starting with a mooch around The Burford Garden Company followed by an antique hunt in Chipping Norton and dinner on Burford High Street.
Q What comes next for you?
A It’s not my intention to be the biggest designer around, I always want to be fully invested in the projects I’m working on, and savour that experience rather than thinking about the next one. More and more clients are looking for highly personalised designs that are genuinely unique to them and timeless, rather than trend-led. That really excites me as it gives me more scope to be more creative and my approach is always: do it once, do it well.

Being PROACTIVE
This project in Berkshire by Sally McGinn Interiors is up for a BIID Interior Design Award. Here she tells us the story behind the design
The design process for this project aimed to reflect the company’s identity in seafood logistics through a narrative of bold sophistication with nautical elements. Deep blues, marine, and sky tones formed a cohesive palette, accentuated by pops of orange and copper. Creativity flourished within budget constraints, with colour blocking and acoustic panelling maximising resources. I reimagined existing furniture and seamlessly integrated them into the design. Visual impact was paramount, evoking the grandeur of marine landscapes. Functionality and practicality were prioritised, ensuring seamless workflow. Client satisfaction was high, supported by meticulous craftsmanship and sustainability initiatives, resulting in a vibrant workspace embodying the company’s identity and the allure of the sea.
NARRATIVE AND STORYTELLING
Inspiration images that captured aspects of the marine landscape were used as illustrative tools to inform the design concept, which created a visual story of the drama and majesty of the sea and natural world.
From the concept images, a colour palette was formed which focused on deep blue colours through to marine and sky blues, contrasting with a pop of orange as reference to the sun, but also copper tones of rusted metal. Look and feel images and samples of finishes were also used to illustrate how the concept images would be interpreted in real life and how fabric, lighting, furniture and finish choices would determine and inform the look and feel of the design. Visuals from 3D modelling of the o ce space and moodboards were also used to build up a visual picture of the design narrative, all contributing to the desired bold, sophisticated nautical design that would be translated across the whole o ce.
DESIGN INNOVATION
Constraints meant the budget and creativity had to stretch as far as possible. The trio of blue colours that formed the basis of the colour scheme created the opportunity to make use of paint colours that was creative, sophisticated but concise. The use of colour blocking was adopted to e ectively make the paint colours work as hard as they could, and the colour block mural design – a focal point of the design – demonstrates a creative but concise approach to the use of colour in an impactful but also budget friendly way.
“The challenge of reusing furniture ensured a creative approach”
Similarly the choice of acoustic panelling was repeated in the design from the boardroom to the private o ces to create continuity but also being mindful of the budget. The challenge of reusing all the existing furniture and equipment also created a creative approach, not only to make the existing items fit, but also reimagining them in a di erent setting. Thinking about the overall design holistically, and visualising the design as a whole, meant creative opportunities like the fish motifs that adorn the walls of the stairwell came about organically, as a way to connect and illustrate the key features of the design narrative.
VISUAL IMPACT
The colour palette and choice of materials emerged out of the strong concept images that evoked the power and majesty of the marine landscapes and industries. Harmony was created by focusing on a tonal palette of three blues, with the use of orange and copper tones for accents and visual interest. The main sky blue colour was the main wall colour throughout the
design, interspersed with walls in deep blue and marine blue for contrast and copper accents in materials. Colour block murals were also used with the three blues to create visual impact and cohesion. Synergy with the choice of materials created further cohesion throughout the design.
Wooden acoustic panelling with a marine oxide finish became the central material to anchor the design, particularly evident in the boardroom to create an immersive feel. The same wooden panelling was used in the o ces on the second floor to create a sense of continuity. The choice of flooring was also important in creating harmony across the design, which comprised of carpet tiles that resonated with the wooden panelling and LVT that flowed from the reception to kitchen area.
FUNCTIONALITY AND PRACTICALITY
As a new o ce space, it was required to accommodate the company’s desire to have an open plan working environment for their key department, o ces for
management, a new boardroom, kitchen and break-out space. Reusing all of their existing furniture and equipment meant space planning was crucial.
To make it work, the two main floors of the premises were divided into two zones. The ground floor became the reception, boardroom and kitchen/break-out room, where new partitions were installed to subdivide the space. Consideration was made to make the most of the space as it was much smaller than the company’s present o ce. The kitchen and break-out space, for example, became one room, but zoned with a kitchen at one end, and a break-out zone for the employees at the other. The first floor became the location for the open plan Logistics Hub and private o ces – and the space was subdivided. The layout of the open plan area reflected the working culture, and consideration was made to make sure the new layout would fit their existing desks and o ce furniture, alongside consideration for how the employees would move about the spaces and interact with each other across the departments.
CRAFTSMANSHIP AND EXECUTION
3D modelling and 2D visuals of space were key elements of ensuring the success of craftsmanship and precision elements in the design, as well as verbal communication
Glass Screen Windbreakers for patios, awnings, verandas and parasols!
on site. The visuals promoted a high level of attention to detail and were an essential tool in communicating the design vision with the principle contractor and tradespeople, alongside showing necessary samples of materials. Along with regular site visits, reviewing work completed, detailed working drawings were used where more precision was required, for example in the creation and installation of the custom made splashback in the kitchen that was required to be installed to a detailed plan. Other precision elements such as the graphics for the internal glazing, laser cut fish motifs for the stairwell and the colour block wall murals required detailed drawings and layout plans in order to guarantee their success.
Underpinning everything were multiple design schedules that detailed all the
components of the design. The design was well planned out from the beginning and a strong working relationship with the principle contractor was crucial in the overall success of the six week build time that was achieved.
SUSTAINABILITY
One of the primary objectives for the client in moving o ce premises was the re-use of their existing o ce furniture and equipment. This was a conscious decision and instruction made by the client to limit the need to replace items simply because they were moving o ce locations, therefore reducing wastage and becoming more resource e cient. The challenging aspect was making the layout in the new o ce fit the existing items, so a dimensioned inventory was produced.
This enabled thorough spatial planning, from which more of their furniture could be re-used to the client’s overall satisfaction. In the client’s existing o ce, the fitted kitchen and appliances were given away to be re-used in a new house. Similarly, in the new o ce premises, the existing kitchen which was to be taken out, was purchased by a private individual to be re-used in another home. Both of these situations reflect the e orts made to reduce waste from each premises and the encouragement of re-using materials whenever possible. In addition, several o ce furniture items that were not being carried over to the new o ce were sold to be re-used. In choosing key materials used in the project, consideration was made to ensure those suppliers had good sustainable merits and production practices, such as the acoustic panels that became such a large part of the overall design. The panels are made from wood sourced from sustainable forestry and the felt backing is made from recycled plastic bottles. In addition the manufacturer of the panels works closely with their supply chain to ensure good working conditions for the people working in the forests, while also protecting and respecting the wildlife. As a less than straight-forward o ce re-design, this project was like a puzzle. In fact there was a whole inventory to fit into a premises half the size of the client’s existing one! It was a blank canvas – to be reimagined. I hope that the passion for the project really comes across.

Position such plants well and they can be enjoyed now and for many years to come.
HOW TO PLANT?
Planting new trees and shrubs is not a di cult job, but one to get right if you want your new plants to have the best start in life. The most important considerations are soil conditions, planting at the correct depth, support if required and aftercare – particularly watering.
SOWING THE SEEDS
The experts at Practicality Brown explain why now is the perfect time to plant
Traditionally, the best time to plant large trees and shrubs is in the autumn and winter months. Deciduous plants are in their dormant stage, meaning that they stop actively growing, requiring minimal maintenance during these colder months. During spring they establish their root systems and are ready for the start of the growing season.
WHEN TO PLANT
Modern horticulture techniques mean that you can now plant throughout the year with containerised trees and trough-grown instant hedges. There are pros and cons to every season, but as long as you choose plants grown to a purpose, watering well until your plants have established, you can plant at any time.
WHY PLANT TREES OR HEDGES?
Planting a tree, even in a small garden, immediately brings vertical interest. If you have room for just one tree, consider one that will bring interest each season, from spring blossom to autumn berries or attractive bark. Trees can also frame a view, or provide a focal point for your garden, and can be used for screening, providing privacy in your garden. If space allows, woodland planting is a charming addition, providing welcome shade during hot summers and an ideal location for early flowering plants. As well as aesthetics, trees and hedges are good at mu ing noises, and cleaning the air; some are particularly good at filtering air-borne pollutants. They can also support wildlife, providing a source of food and a habitat location, from insects to birds and small mammals.

Sport is great for health, but how does its competitive edge feed into a positive culture? Schools give us their take on its role in pupil success
Kew House School
Sport fosters a sense of community at Kew House. The school says that celebrating wins, supporting teams and individuals, and recognising achievements all promote a positive culture around sport – also reinforcing ideas around teamwork, dedication, and perseverance. But the school believes it’s also vital to teach children that failure is a natural part of both sport and life. The emphasis here is on e ort rather than simply outcome, and teachers and coaches provide constructive feedback to help young people cope with setbacks and build resilience.
The support is designed to help young people to reflect, set realistic goals, and focus on continuous improvement. Not all children are naturally gifted at sport, and there’s emphasis on inclusivity and variety – helping children discover sports and activities they enjoy and may excel in. That’s why the school maintains a compulsory curriculum time for girls and boys to be playing together in Core PE lessons.
The sports team know that providing a variety of choices of sport, emphasising skills development over competition, will give encouragement to less able or willing students works. It’s about reinforcing the value of participation and personal improvement rather than just winning. All abilities get the opportunity to participate
in inter-school fixtures against carefully matched teams throughout the school year to highlight the fun and camaraderie of a competitive sporting environment.
For young people on an elite sports pathway, there’s the school’s Top Performing Athlete Program (TPAP), o ering guidance on goal setting, time management, and coping with setbacks such as injury or de-selection. It includes sound advice around physical development – including the importance of continuing education, maintaining wellbeing and building life skills to prepare for alternative pathways and a future beyond sports.
The team say that sport is an essential and vibrant element of the school community, but also helps to shape young people’s attitudes, skills and values. By fostering inclusivity, resilience, and a passion for physical activity, it helps young people to promote their personal development and ability to thrive in the future.
“SPORT HELPS TO SHAPE YOUNG PEOPLE'S ATTITUDES AND VALUES”
Reed’s School
At Reed’s in Surrey, there’s long been great success in sport –with recent wins in areas such as hockey, tennis, ski racing and golf, alongside swimming and athletics. But Director of Sport, Andy Watts, says that wins aren’t the only measure of success at school level – and sometimes they aren’t the best measure. “Setting up fixtures that include challenges is vital, as it builds resilience, helps with problem solving and encourages di erent ways to overcome adversity.”
The school o ers team sports from A-F level and beyond, and with an expectation that all pupils are involved on Saturdays for sport in First and Second Forms (Years 7 and 8). Coaching and facilities, and matching players to teams with comparable depth, support success but also build up other skills.
“Involvement in sport only enhances what happens in the classroom. Developing time management skills, working collaboratively with others, and stepping out of your comfort zone can all contribute to academic progress,” he says. “Being involved in a wide range of activities, such as sport, music, and drama, is crucial to pupil welfare and wellbeing.”
Reed’s has highly ambitious pupils in sport, who may start their day in the gym, fitting in one-to-one technical sessions in their free

periods and then committing evenings and weekends to training and competing.
“This level of dedication is one of the most impressive aspects of the modern pupil athlete,” says Andy. But it isn’t just pupils pursuing elite sports pathways who commit time to improve – the school has noticed increasing demand for its Strength & Conditioning programme across the cohort.
Success is recognised weekly via assemblies. “Captains read out all results: the wins, draws and losses. It is important to recognise all competition and sometimes the best received reports are losses where teams have given their all. This public recognition is important and encourages players to represent their team, the school and, most importantly, their peers,” says Andy.
Reed’s encourages young people to aspire to sports leadership roles. “The skill of coaches and teachers in schools is to try and provide opportunity for success, but also learning how to deal with losing, coping with adversity, and overcoming any fear of failure,” says Andy. “Communication of selection is vital face-to-face, as indeed is rewarding e ort, not just the outcome.”
He adds that it’s important not to shy away from the e ort involved in all competition. “Without it, sport becomes play. Success isn’t just about winning, as nice as that is, it is about the hard work behind the scenes.”
Tonbridge School
At Tonbridge, sport is part of day-to-day life. “Sport is integral to our school’s ethos, with all students engaging in activities at least three times weekly,” says Director of Sport, Chris Morgan. “We believe it fosters character development, o ering equal opportunities for personal growth regardless of skill level or team a liation.”
National and international achievements significantly influence Tonbridge pupils’ enthusiasm about sport. All the better when you have alumni to get behind. Current OTs shining bright include Ben Earl in rugby and Zak Crawley in cricket – both now England regulars. “They serve as inspiring role models, driving increased interest and participation,” adds Chris. Those on a potential elite sports pathway receive tailored support through the school’s mentorship programme. This includes guidance from performance coaches, lectures and sta members who have navigated similar elite challenges. “This holistic approach prepares students to aim high while equipping them with strategies to manage setbacks.”
Heathfield School
Sport is for all at Heathfield. Participation at every level is encouraged, with every student discovering a new passion and unlocking their talent. Success at local, county and national level is frequent in both winter and summer sports. These include lacrosse
(winners of the Small Schools’ Tournament and quarter finalists in the National Schools’ Lacrosse Tournament), netball (teams in the top 12 of national competitions), football, swimming, gymnastics, trampolining (Southern Region U14 Girls Trampoline Champion), athletics, cricket, tennis and skiing (4th at ISSC Indoor Schools Championships in May). Heathfield’s equestrian teams are also strong, competing in polo, show jumping, cross country and dressage competitions. Currently two Heathfield alumnae are on the GB Olympic pathway in dressage.
In addition, there are numerous sporting clubs for students including taekwondo, badminton and yoga. Set within 36 tree lined acres, facilities include five lacrosse pitches, 6 netball/tennis courts, a 25m indoor heated pool, yoga studio, fitness suite, multi-use sports hall, dance studio, athletics tracks and cross-country track.

Oakham School
At Oakham, sport is a fundamental part of school life – every child has at least three sessions a week. But Director of Sport, Dr Iain Simpson, says there’s something much more. “It provides a buzz to the school campus on match days when hundreds of pupils take to the playing fields, the pitches, the courts, and the pool to compete.”
With around 50 inter-house sporting competitions each year, pupils are encouraged to take part and support their peers. All abilities get the chance to play regular matches against other schools – it’s as busy for the D team as their A team counterparts – all celebrated in the Oakhamian annual magazine via a season report.
Oakham has many pupils playing for academies or on sporting pathways. “We formally support and recognise these achievements at our annual Sports Colours Presentation ceremony. When our 1st XV boys’ rugby team won the National Schools Cup at Twickenham for the third time in 2023, 850 pupils, parents and sta travelled to London to watch them compete,” says Iain. The school community was also out in force when the U16 girls’ hockey team carried o silver in the final of the Tier 1 National Cup Competition in March.
The players in winning teams become role models to those in the school, as do elite athletes at national and international level. “The most powerful role models are people like themselves,” says Iain.
Pangbourne S
port is an integral part of school life at Pangbourne, with all pupils taking part at least three times a week, some up to six times a week. Pangbourne’s Director of Sport, Sam Hewick, states: “This o ers a huge opportunity for character and life skill development through sport. As a small school, we are really able to stretch, challenge and develop all levels of performers, and particularly focus on team sports.”
At the top end, recent Pangbourne alumni have included England rugby U20s Calum Scott, GB 2024 Paralympian rower Frankie Allen, and Scottish rugby international Daryl Marfo. Current Sixth Form pupil, Mia, has recently been selected for England U21 hockey side and has been playing for Reading Women’s 1st team in the Premier League
“THE MOST POWERFUL ROLE MODELS ARE PEOPLE LIKE THEMSELVES”
since Year 10. All of the talented performers are supported by the Sports Performance Programme (SPP). This covers areas such as athletic development, mental skills, nutrition, life management, and skill development.
“However, the focus is not just on aspirational high performance athletes and Pangbourne celebrates having nearly 90% of their school regularly taking part in competitive team sport,” Sam adds. “This is something that I am proud of.”

VISION
Malvern St James Girls’ School is a special place, as highlighted by two di erent perspectives about the benefits of all-girls’ education
DOUBLE
DR GARETH LLOYD
Head of Malvern St James Girls' School
Q How long have you been Head of Malvern St James?
A I started as Head on 1 January 2024, and have absolutely loved every minute of it. Allgirls’ schools are such fantastic communities, and Malvern is one of the most beautiful places in the world to live, so how could I NOT be attracted to working at MSJ?!
Q What immediately struck you the first time you visited the school?
A The warmth of welcome from everyone – sta and pupils alike – was immediately apparent. There is a tremendous sense of kindness that permeates the whole school.
Q Have you had much experience of working in all-girls’ schools?
A My ten happiest years were as Director of Music and Housemaster at an all-girls’ school, but I am predicting that my time at MSJ will become my new happiest years! I have worked as both teacher and Head at
single boys’, single girls’ and co-educational schools, and by far my most rewarding experience has been in all-girls’ settings.
Q At Malvern St James, what opportunities do your girls have that they may not get in a mixed school?
A Malvern St James strives to allow each and every girl to thrive, to discover talents and skills and, most importantly, to be herself in a safe and happy environment. So many of our pupils opt for STEM A-levels and, thereafter, degrees – statistically, far more than in co-educational settings. I rejoice to see so many of our girls really commit themselves to the wide range of sports we o er, not at all self-conscious as I have observed as both a Head and inspector in coeducational schools. Opportunities to assume leadership roles commence from Year 5, and are carefully developed throughout the senior school, to help our girls grow into highly confident and competent young women, prepared for life after school.
Q Is there more peer support in a single sex school?
A Good peer support at any good school should be the norm. Clearly, there are di erences between co-educational and all-girls’ schools. At the latter, there is never any awkwardness, embarrassment or selfconsciousness in the conversations that our girls may wish to have with each other. As we have a strict policy of no mobile phones in school, it is wonderfully liberating not to be distracted by the all-too frequent unkindness that social media platforms can bring about. Through the peer support system in place via our Form structure, the girls experience empathy and encouragement that build confidence on so many levels.
RUQAYYA
Head Girl at Malvern St James Girls' School
Q Are you aware of the di erences of being at an all-girls’ school?
A Having experienced both environments, I would say yes. Being at an all-girls’ school, we are more confident, largely because we are more comfortable. This makes learning a lot easier and a lot more fun for the students and sta alike, as there is equal engagement from everyone. Here, my gender does not limit what subjects I should be good at or what sports I should enjoy.
Q What opportunities have you had that you may not have had elsewhere?
A The opportunity to meet people from all over the world. From connecting with current students, to past ones through the Old Girls’ Association, I’ve started building my global network from such a young age. It’s very exciting and also comforting to think that no matter where life takes me there will almost always be an MSJ girl who can guide me.
Q As a Head Girl, do you take pride in helping the younger girls at the school blossom?
A Definitely. Even before becoming Head Girl I always enjoyed interacting with the younger girls and helping them in any way possible, so I highly appreciate the fact that it’s now part of my role. I was once that younger girl, so I know how impactful it can be to have someone slightly older who has been through similar experiences that is always there to help.
Q How would you sum up the environment at Malvern St James?
A Malvern St James is a community before it is anything else. Boarding or day, local or international, student or sta ; we are all connected and working together to make the MSJ experience the best possible for everyone.

How the world of play inspires learning at Berkhamsted Pre-Prep and Prep
t Berkhamsted Pre-Prep and Prep, pupils are encouraged to explore the world around them and develop holistically through play. Studies by the University of Cambridge have shown that the more children play, the more likely they are to develop into selfregulating, emotionally intelligent adults.
To give pupils the best start in life, pupils from age three engage in indoor and outdoor play. As part of the school’s drive to develop risk-taking adults who are unafraid to make mistakes, pupils play outside no matter the weather. “If it’s raining,” says Head of Stepping Stones Debbie Cooper, “pupils put on a coat and still head out.”
From nursery, symbolic role play is used to develop pupils’ understanding of the world around them. Stepping Stones recently enjoyed a visit from firemen and afterwards took turns playing as firemen themselves.
During World Book Day, pupils across the school dressed as their favourite animals and collectively imagined how their character may act and move. Through these opportunities to imitate, pupils make sense of the world.
But play doesn’t just happen in class. To develop their independence, pupils are given the freedom to play by themselves. A walled garden is a magical setting on the Pre-Prep campus that gives pupils the freedom to play in groups, explore the age-appropriate climbing equipment, and take independent risks. At the Prep, the outdoor area has been recently re-landscaped to provide more dedicated outdoor play areas for the children, and a greater sense of space on the campus. While pupils are always supervised, they don’t often know it, encouraging them to express themselves and socialise with peers without constant intervention from teachers.
Following the Forest School Curriculum, play often happens in the woodlands surrounding the countryside campus. By taking play outdoors, pupils across all age groups have
an increased ability to explore the world around them and take risks through climbing, adventuring, and following the dedicated Gru alo trail that leads through the woods.
Parents are involved in encouraging play, from dedicated parent talks that discuss the benefits of playing with children at home to inviting parents on site to engage in play with the children. Every Christmas, Pre-Prep parents are invited to join their children as they complete a ‘stickman walk’ through the woods, while Prep parents enjoy talks on the benefits of playing with their children, family games nights are especially recommended!
A highlight of many pupils’ time at school has been Berkhamsted Pre-Prep and Prep’s ‘International Day of Play’ in which usual lessons are switched for games and play. At the Pre-Prep, pupils engaged in outdoor play, strategic card games, puppet shows, and makebelieve. At the Prep, pupils enjoyed moulding shapes in a sandbox and a range of outdoor games from skipping to marbles, to tiddlywinks.
“For every moment that on the surface looks like play,” concludes Debbie, “we have a carefully constructed approach for the development of each individual child.”

Building leadership skills in a school environment is a multi-faceted process that requires intentional strategies and opportunities for students to develop and practice leadership in various contexts. Schools can foster a community where students grow into confident, capable leaders through structured programs and everyday interactions.
One key element in developing leadership skills is providing diverse opportunities for students to take on leadership roles. Head students can exemplify this approach. Whether through participating in school plays, talent shows, or student-run companies, students are encouraged to step out of their comfort zones and lead. This builds their confidence and allows them to discover and nurture their unique talents.
Future PROOFING
Cultivating leaders: Akeley Wood School on the strategies for building leadership skills
New students and those from historically under-represented backgrounds can be o ered platforms to contribute to the school community. For instance, a new student passionate about international relations can leverage opportunities like the Model UN to develop and showcase their leadership skills. This experience highlights the importance of creating an inclusive environment where students feel welcomed and heard, reinforcing their sense of belonging and commitment to the school.
Leadership development is also integrated into academic and extracurricular activities. A student interested in fashion and media can create a newsletter or podcast, enhancing their journalism and publishing skills while encouraging peers to engage in the school community. This initiative fosters
leadership and enhances collaborative skills and creative thinking.
A strategic approach to leadership involves working on key areas of improvement the school focuses on, such as learning and teaching, environment and sustainability, diversity and inclusion, and wellbeing. Students can develop actionable plans for positive change and collaborate with school leaders during regular meetings to implement new initiatives. By providing these opportunities and supporting students in their leadership journeys, schools can ensure that students excel academically and grow into well-rounded individuals ready to make meaningful contributions to their communities and beyond.”

EDUCATION for CHANGE
Celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, St Clare's, Oxford on the benefits of IB for all students
By LOUISE JONES
We are living in ever-changing times, and if you’re a teenager you need an education that is going to help you to thrive on change. St Clare’s has been delivering the International Baccalaureate (IB) for 45 years, longer than any other school in England, attracting students from over 50 countries and embracing internationalism and academic excellence as core values. We are often asked about the benefits of the IB Diploma over other education models. For parents with teenage children the current incarnation of the A-level might seem quite familiar. Usually three subjects are taken and, with a few exceptions, are examined terminally. These subjects are chosen from a wide range of options,
with no compulsory subjects and no requirement for them to be closely related.
The IB Diploma has the elements of a rounded education built in. At the centre are the core elements: an extended essay, a theory of knowledge course and an extra-curricular programme including creativity, sports and community service. These contribute to the overall points score and help to bind together the learning from the subject areas. Six subjects are studied for the IB in the UK, including English, another language, mathematics, a science, a humanity, and a free choice – this might be something creative, or perhaps a second science or humanities subject.
So, is the IB better than A-levels? If you don’t have a tight area of focus, or are good at a range of subjects, or even just don’t know what you want to do yet, then the IB keeps more doors open for longer. As IB courses all have a coursework element, the programme gets students into a productive work rhythm. Another benefit is that it takes some pressure o the final exams.
Universities find IB students very well prepared for tertiary study because they have already learnt how to manage their time and how to prioritise. Our Careers and Higher Education Department, made up of three full-time advisors, supports and sends students to universities worldwide.
A common misconception is that IB is only for the most able students. Our experience is that weaker learners often benefit from the greater structure in the IB and achieve better results through high levels of progress. St Clare’s is proud of its track record on individual progress and its IB scores. Every year, we have students who achieve the maximum IB score of 45, placing them in the top 1% of students globally.
As we celebrate our 70th anniversary at St Clare’s, our core mission to ‘advance international education and understanding’ remains and is still underpinned in the school’s day-to-day life.

Boarding lends itself in this way to cultivating a genuine love for their subjects that isn’t always possible in the confines of the day school classroom. The longer school day also means that teenagers don’t have to choose between being a top academic and aiming for excellence on the sporting, music or drama front. Preparing for school
As September fast approaches, practitioners from Nursery on the Green in Redbourn are on a mission to prepare pre-schoolers for the adventure that awaits. Complete with a comprehensive school readiness programme covering topics including phonics and self-care, the South Common setting boasts expert support for children approaching the milestone transition, who are able to practice fundamental skills such as dressing themselves and writing and identifying their names. Royal approval
Earlier this summer, students from St George’s School Windsor Castle had the privilege of displaying their artwork in an exclusive inaugural Summer Art Exhibition in the Dean’s Cloister, Windsor Castle. Featuring a piece of work from every student in Years 2 to 8 at the school, the exhibition was open to Castle visitors during normal opening hours and included a diverse and talented array of work inspired by a range of international artists.
During the exhibition, which was a first for the school, the children’s work was even viewed by Emperor Naruhito of Japan who paid a private visit to the adjoining St George’s Chapel on Thursday 27 June alongside his State Visit. It is understood the Emperor was impressed to see Japanese art among the exhibits. This is yet another example of the forward-thinking approach at St George’s School Windsor Castle. stgwindsor.org
academic success. Ensuring each child feels safe and supported is key to building their growing confidence in their own abilities. Visitors to our school comment on the happy atmosphere, while our students describe Cranford as a family community. Our aim is to ignite every individual’s curiosity and interest and I am delighted to say that the scope of our students’ accomplishments is exceptional.” cranfordschool.co.uk

The Berkshire local is heading out on a new ‘Ocean’ UK tour
Following sold-out tours in 2022 and 2023, Steve Backshall will take to the road once again this autumn with his critically acclaimed live show, ‘Ocean’.
‘Ocean’ is a love letter to the most exciting environment on our planet – and a great way to learn more about what we need to do to protect and save our seas. Featuring stunts, experiments, props, cutting edge science and big screen footage from his two decades in TV, Steve brings the icons of the Big Blue to life, live on stage. From great whites to great whales, seals to sardine shoals, orca to the oddities of the deep; this is a fantastic opportunity for fans of all ages to dive deep and explore the enchanting world beneath the waves.
Steve has been passionate about the wild world ever since he could crawl. Growing up, he counted the animals that lived around him as his best pals – from the asthmatic donkey to the grass snakes in the manure heap!
Armed with an idea for a television series, Steve headed out to Colombia. Whilst living in the jungle he wrangled snakes and ended up in a Colombian jail (through no fault of his own!). National Geographic Channel International bought the resultant video and Steve was taken on as ‘Adventurer in Residence’, producing, filming and presenting adventure and natural history programmes. Steve has circumnavigated the globe time and again, venturing into the Sinai desert, completing the Israeli paratroopers selection course, catching anacondas, vipers and cobras and (perhaps the best job ever) making “The Ten Great Dives of the World”, for the long-running series ‘Earthpulse’.
Steve is one of the busiest presenters on television, mainly working for the BBC’s Natural History Unit. He has had his own season of programmes on Eden
television channel alongside legends David Attenborough and Bruce Parry.
In 2003, Steve moved to the BBC’s Natural History Unit, where he took his place on the long running children’s wildlife programme ‘The Really Wild Show’. Next, Steve joined the Natural History Unit’s fledgling expedition team, making the first ascent of a jungle peak and dropping into a vast sinkhole in the Mulu mountains in ‘Expedition Borneo’. In ‘Lost Land of the Jaguar’ he made the first ascent of Mount Upuigma in Venezuela, slept on the vertical cli face and found unknown species of animals on the summit. He also abseiled to the bottom of the Kaiteur Falls in Guyana to the soaked wonderland below.
