ll things bright and beautiful is our theme for this issue; colourful fashion, local characters and businesses and nothing but blue skies and white sands in our travel section. And no amount of April showers can dampen our optimism. We’re looking at the new season’s palette and discovering that it mostly consists of pink. That’s right – as soon as the first rays of sun emerge from winter we are all going to be dressing in bubblegum shades. But they’re very grown-up ones, so don’t worry, you won’t be looking like your five-year-old. If pink isn’t your thing, our fashion editor Charlotte Adsett has rounded up the best of the sunshine yellow trend – we already have our eyes on a particular Anya Hindmarch bag.

In our culture section we take a stroll around Crystal Palace to soak up a little of the local colour, discovering the best place to get your eyebrows threaded, buy that statement sofa and stop for a slice of cake and a damn fine cup of coffee. On our travels we also discover Tom Merrifield’s fabulous exhibition on at the M1 Gallery this month as well as what is inspiring the co-director of interiors destination Raft Furniture, Bromley. In addition to this is our lead interview with The X-Files alum Gillian Anderson and travel inspiration from Sri Lanka. I hope you enjoy the issue. Ciao! ◆

ARTS & CULTURE / EXHIBITION Throughout the 1950s, 60s and 70s Tom was principal dancer in many of the most successful West End musicals to date including On The Town, West Side Story and Showboat and at the pinnacle of his career was the highest paid dancer in the UK. In this, his 83rd year, Tom is still sculpting and has been commissioned by the likes of Hilton Group, The Red Cross, Reebok and Speedo, as well as being collected by numerous A-list celebrities, many of whom he counts as close personal friends. After arriving in the UK from his native Australia at the age of just 19, Tom quickly found himself employed as principle dancer in what is now The English National Ballet. From that point

his year, the incredible story of Tom Merrifield, who was once the highest paid professional dancer in the UK and today is respected as one of the sculpting world's heavyweights will be documented in his first major public exhibition for over 15 years. Covering his entire life from his humble beginnings in Australia, through to present day this exhibition will inform, thrill and thoroughly satisfy lovers of dance and sculpture alike. Born in 1933 in Sydney, Australia, Tom Merrifield trained as a classical dancer and at the age of sixteen became the youngest lead
soloist with the Borovansky Ballet. Three years later he moved to Britain where he danced with the English National Ballet, enjoying an incredibly successful career in this challenging discipline. During this distinguished and rewarding career, Tom began drawing and sculpting without any formal art training and eventually took this up as a full-time occupation, looking back only for inspiration in his new passion. He has since gone on to be formally recognised as a major living artist and one of the finest sculptors of his generation, being given the incredible accolade of ARBS for Distinction in the Art of Sculpture by the Royal Society of British Sculptors.

on, his success in the world of dance seemed set. Following a sensational career in ballet, later in life Tom would tread the boards of some of London’s most respected theatres in principle dancing roles for West End shows. At the height of his dance career, so in demand was Tom that his reputation extended far beyond ballet and the West End as he also appeared in numerous film and television roles. Throughout his illustrious sculpting career, Tom has depicted many of the world’s most famous dancers, including Thomas Edur, Dame Alicia Markova and Dame Beryl Grey to name but a few. Running from April 2nd until May 1st, ‘A Life in the Arts’ explores the incredible talent of a man who has excelled in numerous aspects of an all too often secretive and revered world. hen the Anderson reprising her role announcement as Agent Scully in The X-Files came that The X-Files was returning to our screens, the internet exploded with joy. Yet amid the fanatical reception from loyal followers of the travails of Agents Mulder and Scully, it can be easy to forget that for the actors who played those iconic characters, there’s something special about returning too. “I had the lingering sense that I had never really said goodbye to the character or to the story,” says Gillian star was difficult to shake, so much so Anderson, who played iconic FBI agent that when she was first asked to return Dana Scully on the small screen from to the role she said no, having “worked 1993 to 2002 as well as in the two movie really hard putting Dana Scully to sleep”. offshoots. With her partner, dedicated However, eventually she relented. “Well, but paranoid Agent Fox Mulder (David at first I thought to myself, ‘there’s no Duchovny), Scully investigated all way in hell I want to do this again’, but manner of paranormal activity and the everyone kept telling me it would be fun duo quickly became cult icons, while both and after a while I just said, ‘Oh, what Anderson and Duchovny went on to enjoy the heck! Let’s do it!” Also, the chance to huge career success. reunite with Duchovny was hard to pass For Anderson, the role that changed up. “After shooting the last film, we still her life and launched her as a global thought we would get to do a third,” she

says. “But then it never happened. So I thought it would be great to be able to work with David again and get some closure to what had been a major part of our lives.” Re-launched as a six-part ‘event’ series running in the UK on Channel 5, the show has been well-received by fans and critics alike for capturing the mystery and nostalgia of the original while updating its approach for the digital generation. What has also been noted is how fantastic both title stars look and how the screen still fizzles with their easy chemistry. Anderson in particular has barely aged and still radiates luminous beauty, with the trademark porcelain skin and reddish-gold hair that made her a poster girl for sci-fi fans the world over. Off-screen, one of Anderson’s more startling traits is her rather proper British accent. So accustomed are we to seeing her on TV speaking with an American drawl that it is easy to forget she has spent a lot of her time in the UK. Born in Chicago, she grew up in Crouch End until the age of 11 when her parents

moved back to America. Then, aged 24 and living in New York, she landed her breakout X-Files role. Anderson considers herself both British and American but for the last few years she has been based firmly in London where she lives centrally with her sons Oscar, nine, and Felix, seven. Her love of the capital is well known and she has said in the past that when she arrives back in town she likes to gaze out of taxi windows to “soak in the city I feel so grateful to live in”. In the intervening years since we last saw her as Scully, the 47-year-old

has been carving out a new identity in a variety of TV series including BBC2 dramas The Fall and Hannibal. Since turning 40, Anderson has experienced a resurgence. In particular she has been hailed for her role in The Fall, where DSI Stella Gibson is an icy but gifted detective who strides down the corridors of Belfast’s central police station. Brought in from the Met to solve a series of murders, she terrifies male colleagues with her confident sexuality and incisive brain. The show is shot in Belfast and a third series is expected this year. Anderson is known for playing strong, outspoken females, and her role in The Fall is no exception. “Stella is one of the most difficult but creatively satisfying characters I’ve ever played,” she says. “It’s been an honour to be in her company, even though it’s a complicated process for me to play her. It’s also easier to work when you don’t have to be on a plane all the time and you feel you’re not disrupting your life with your children as much.” In 2014, Anderson took a job even closer to home when she played Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams at the Young Vic, for which she won the Evening Standard

Theatre Award for Best Actress and a Laurence Olivier Award nomination. In June this year she will reprise the role at St Anne’s Warehouse, a theatre in New York, an undertaking the busy actress is both excited and exhausted by. “It’s going to be very demanding and draining but it’s such a great and important role,” she says. “I’m often drawn to playing complex and troubled women, and those are the characters that give you so much insight into human nature. Human beings are complicated creatures, aren’t we?” Indeed, Anderson herself is a complicated and mysterious personality. She is understandably guarded about her private life, having been married twice and having once revealed that she’d had relationships with women in the past. Also, during the original X-Files run there were rumours of both a love affair and a fallout between Anderson and Duchovny (though it’s difficult to know how much of that was imagined by fans desperate to see the great on-screen romance reflected in real life). Whatever their differences,
Anderson says she and Duchovny are “a lot closer” than before. “We’re both a little older and have a little more perspective that probably comes from being parents and going through different struggles in our lives,” she says. “Now we see that it’s easier to support each other and enjoy our friendship and the time we’ve been able to spend together.” For the record, Anderson is now very much single and enjoying her life in London. “I’m so lucky to have such great work,” she told The Telegraph last year. “I’ve got a fantastic life, I have a wonderful relationship with my kids and there’s nothing lacking.” The prospect of a new relationship, however, remains possible, with Anderson stating that although she
17 C&A_April16_GILLIAN ANDERSON.indd 17
thinks “it is better not to manipulate the situation” she is sure that she wants her next relationship “to be the one” – regardless of who that person is. “To me a relationship is about loving another human being,” she remarks philosophically, before going on to say that gender is, in her eyes, “irrelevant” when it comes to romantic relationships. With her triumphant return to the small screen in full swing, there’s every possibility that Anderson will be too busy, “either filming or on planes or putting my sons to bed,” to find her potential soulmate. In the meantime, though, she remains content to discover everything London has to offer. l The X-Files airs on Channel 5

rystal Palace is famous for many things; its namesake, moved there from Hyde Park in the 1850s which represented innovation and scientific discovery for one. Its football team, Crystal Palace F.C. who recently competed in the FA Cup Final for another. A third reason to visit the South East London community is the shops. Home to a myriad of independent stores and eateries, Crystal Palace is a blast of fresh air in a city where all too often chains and supermarkets rule the high street. One such place is The Do South Shop. Founded by Freddie Oke in 2011, it began with one simple dream: to become the design hub for South London and beyond, truly offering interiors with imagination. Beginning with a store, the stage was set. Five years on and The Do South Shop plays host to a plethora of internationally renowned brands, selling on and offline worldwide. Widely regarded as the leading voice in interior design for the South London

area, the store’s recent overhaul led the way for a new-look Crystal Palace – so what can we expect from the store itself? The Do South Shop feels more like a beautifully curated home than a store. Leading brands such as HAY, String, Vifa, Ethnicraft, Alessi and Skagarak sit alongside new designers, one-off
finds and expertly restored vintage pieces to create an approachable and welcoming environment. Continually evolving, the brand now offers a full interior design service as well as expert upholstery. Working with the industry heavyweights Romo Group and Casamance (to name a few) The Do South Shop provides an unbeatable variety of brands previously unheard of outside of the City’s design districts. A must-visit store for the interior lover, the Do South Shop is firmly on our radar. After browsing through some beautiful homewares, shoppers in need of a little pampering need not stray outside of Crystal Palace. Newcomers The Lash Lounge London, opened by former PR girl Ash Cole, describe themselves as a ‘one-stop shop’ for beauty. They offer tinting, eyelash extensions, waxing and threading all in a chic, relaxing salon, guaranteeing you will walk out looking and feeling glamorous. A little stroll down Church Road will then bring you to Beauty by Renata and Dagmara, an oasis of calm amidst the hustle and bustle of the city. Visitors can

Established in 1978 by husband and wife team John and Christina Ellner, the charming eatery has become known for its signature hamburgers, inventive cocktails and stunning views out over the city. After lunch, shoppers can pop into the recently opened Fancy Moon, fabric and yarn emporium and heaven for anyone with a passion for knitting and textiles. Luckily, they also offer fantastic workshops for beginners in both sewing and crochet as well as more advanced knitting courses, so everyone can get involved, no matter what their skill level. Having spent the afternoon fashioning yourself various garments, most would agree that a spot of tea is in order. Opening its doors this April is Dalhousie, a bakery that is the brainchild of Canadian Derek Taylor. His very lofty ambition is to ‘share his passion for baking with the British.’ Nestled in the heart of Crystal Palace’s famous triangle, it will offer delicious cakes, fresh coffee and beautiful decor. It is sure to become a local favourite in no time. Whether you are just visiting or are lucky enough to live there, it is the personal touch that really makes Crystal Palace unique. ur designer to watch at the moment is Lauren Barfoot, alumni of fashion breeding ground, the Royal College of Art. Her collection of printed silk lounge- and resortwear under the label Holland Street (named for the street she grew up in, which is – disappointingly – in Cambridge, not W8) absolutely oozes luxury. There are short, sassy kimonos and longer, elegant robes in various prints – our favourite being the Casati collection (kimono pictured above), inspired by the flamboyant Marchesa Luisa Casati, described by Barfoot as ‘a lavishly eccentric Italian heiress with a decadent passion for couture’. Because given that we can't all actually be the Marchesa, fabulous as she sounds, enveloping ourselves in the kind of silk she’d certainly have chosen can infuse our lives with a little of her sparkle. There’s also the Ikko collection, inspired by Japanese graphic designer Ikki Tanaka with contemporary floral designs, and Carmen Camellia, that fuses a British countryside feel with geometric flare and influences of Raoul Dufy, Paul Poiret and Collier Campbell. Everything comes beautifully packed and exquisitely finished, with stockists including Polyvore, Trouva and Fenwick in Bond Street. Prices range from £189 to £275.u

ased in Crystal Palace, Renata and Dagmara have created a place of relaxation. The salon has a tranquil feel to it and I am guided to a clean and spacious treatment room with scented candles and relaxing music creating a calming atmosphere. After going through a number of health questions, Dagmara examines my skin and explains to me which areas need more attention For the next hour and a half I relax while Dagmara works her magic. I am receiving the Advanced Active Vitamin Treatment which uses products from Environ Advanced Skin, a range that is based on active ingredients that give optimum penetration into the deepest layers of the skin. She starts with Pre-Cleansing Oil, which removes oil debris from surface of skin to facilitate penetration of active ingredients. A clay masque is then applied before the secondary cleanse: Cleansing Gel made with citric acid to remove excess oil. After my skin is toned, Dagmara uses a mini peel with sonophoresis (soundwaves) to get rid of my blackheads. Active treatment with ionophoresis (small electrical pulses), an algae masque and finally moisturiser and eye gel all follow, leaving my skin feeling alive. The treatment targets the fifth skin layer, boosting it with the vitamins the skin craves. â—†

Our perfume expert on the scents that capture the smell of spring rainfall W o r d s L aw r e n c e R o u l l i e r W h i t e
T
here is an olfactory occurrence, a scent sensation, that when it is talked about everyone knows what is meant but everyone finds it impossible to describe. In nature it is the smell of the atmosphere during and after a shower, when the scent of something that should have no smell, rainwater, is everywhere. The phenomenon was studied in 1964 by two Australian scientists, Isabel Bear and Roderick Thomas. They discovered that part of what one is smelling is not rainwater at all but an oil which is held in soil and rocks; this oil is disrupted by rain and humidity and it is the tiny emissions of scent molecules from this oil that prevail in the air. They even gave it a name: petrichor. Another component of the smell of rain is geosmin, also an organic compound it has an earthy aroma and is produced by ground bacteria. Prevalent in the soil, it is jettisoned into the air by falling raindrops. We are strangely susceptive to the smell of geosmin, the human nose can detect the tiniest traces as low as just five parts per trillion. No one is sure why this is, but whilst we might moan
1
about the rain we are genetically hardwired to recognise it as a basic requirement for life – and it is this life-affirming scent that perfumers for hundreds of years have attempted to bottle. Jimmy Boyd’s Spring Rain [1] supersuccessfully creates the experience of a verdant garden after a downpour, complete with a floating ivy leaf in the bottle. Spring Rain is an incredibly fresh fragrance with a lingering silage that matures and deepens over time: a sophisticated woody scent with an elegant finish. And despite the bottle’s beauty and the scent’s skilfully considered construction, it is incredibly reasonably priced.
FOR CENTURIES, PERFUMERS
have tried to bottle THIS SCENT
Given a shower’s association with cleansing and renewal it is appropriate than that US brand Clean should also have captured this most restorative of scents. Rain [2] by Clean has top notes of melon, daffodil and watermint around a middle of daisy and violet leaves on a bed of wood and musk. This is a wonderful daytime scent that will have you happily sniffing your wrist on the dullest of days. Misty Dew [3] eau de toilette by British brand, St Raph, is a fresh, floral fragrance that encapsulates those chilly yet invigorating spring mornings. Woodland covered in dew and rain drops, a sharp breeze, a typical early stroll in the English countryside. The inspiration for this perfume becomes clear as the top
37 DUL_APRIL16_Perfume.indd 37
note of rosemary sweeps in and awakens the senses. Acacia at the heart is delicate, light and spring-like. At the base of the fragrance notes of ambergris and musk cushion the scent for an elegant and refined finish. Looking and smelling the part, Silver Rain [4] eau de parfum by Swiss brand La Prairie, is encapsulated in a glistening silver raindrop bottle. It is hard to imagine that so many ingredients are packed into such as a small vessel. This truly is a scent of delight and intrigue; green apple, bergamot zest plum and sugar merge with patchouli leaves, red sandalwood, heliotrope flower, vanilla and oud. Quite simply a drop of joy. Derring-Do [5] by San Francisco-based, brilliant botanical perfumer Ineke, is a fresh fougère fragrance of exquisite depth and character. Derring-Do opens with a burst of fresh, aquatic rain notes alongside clean cyclamen and a hint of citrus. Moving into the heart notes warmly spiced cardamom and black pepper lend shadowy mystery with the addition of fern and lush floral magnolia. A heavenly base of cedar, guaiac wood and musk completes this fragrance that will have those around you looking skyward and saying, ‘Does it feel like rain to you?’

WILD GARLIC SOUP

HALIBUT & MASHED POTATO
ish and Chablis is as classic a match as you can get, but a meatytextured fish such as halibut shouldn’t be paired with any wallflower Chablis – it needs something with personality. BRITISH CLASSIC
Fabulous fare at The Vintage Fish in Blackheath Wo r d s r o s e n o e l
here are few things that summon up comfort and British food as well as a really good fish and chips. Luckily, The Vintage Fish in Blackheath has this covered. But there is much more to this local eatery than just plain old cod and chips wrapped in newspaper. The Vintage Fish only opens from Tuesday to Saturday, the same days as Billingsgate Market, to ensure only the freshest fish from the daily catch are served. They also offer a gluten free option every Tuesday, so anyone with intolerances can enjoy a traditional fish and chips. The decor, too, is unlike your average chippy, with gorgeous tiles, exposed brick and stylish industrial lighting giving the whole place a trendy feel. For our mains we have several options to choose from; the ˇOriginalsˇ section boasts classics like haddock fillet, halibut, plaice and rock whereas the ̦Grilledˇ offers slightly healthier options such as salmon or mackerel fillets without batter. My friend and I go for the cod and haddock respectively, with a generous side of chips. No stringy, thin fries here, instead beautiful, fat, fluffy chips, cooked to golden perfection. The fish is flakey, flavourful and filling. The Vintage Fish is definitely the plaice to go for quality comfort food – pardon the pun. ◆

In the Market
Excellent produce and brilliant service at The Crystal Palace Market Wo r d s c at h e r i n e h a l e s
T
he Crystal Palace Market belongs whole-heartedly to the area that surrounds it. Using locally sourced ingredients, the restaurant prioritises quality and a sense of community above all else and ingredients are seasonal, with nothing flown in from overseas. Fans of the restaurant will be thrilled to hear that a wine bar serving charcuterie, cheese platters and oysters will open next door within the next month. The interior is rustic yet chic, with exposed brick, white tile on the wall and worn wooden tables and chairs. The kitchen is open, making diners feel part of the action and the seafood bar filled with ice and festooned with colourful fish of every description invokes the titular market feel. We are unable to resist a cocktail to start and my friend and I are soon happily sipping our delicious French Martini and
Isle Garden while perusing the menu. The fabulous fish display has had its desired effect as my friend chooses the carpaccio of Sea Bass with horseradish, shallots, lemon and truffle oil – rich, flavourful and piquant, the fire of the horseradish brings out the subtle taste of the fish. My white asparagus with shitake mushrooms, poached egg and Parmesan is equally impressive; the velvety mushrooms in particular are a real treat. For our mains we opt for the grilled scallops, which come with bacon (a genius combination) and the tender fillet steak, swimming in a garlic and parsley sauce. We share our sides of creamy truffle mash and broccoli and somehow find room for tasty chocolate fondant. An excellent meal in truly lovely surroundings. ◆

ri Lanka’s history is a turbulent one. Years of civil war and environmental disasters could have left the country in dire straits, and while the political situation is far from stable – corruption is still a problem and cultural tensions run high – the fascinating history, ecological abundance, and beauty of the island has kept it on numerous travel hotlists. In recent years, the country has become a top destination, but rocky PRIVATE VILLA AT terrains and little investment in SUN AQUA PASIKUDAH the east coast means that foreign feet have rarely strayed far from the country’s capital, Colombo. Typical travelling routes don't venture far from the lush, culturally rich region of Kandy in the Central Province, where the ancient monarchy once ruled, and Galle in the southwest, which offers a stellar combination of seaside bliss and an opulent cultural heritage. Sure, these destinations are beautiful and make for a wonderful travelling experience, but there is more to Sri Lanka, brought to the region by foreign investment and it lies on the east coast. diminished. Since the war finally ended in Sri Lanka’s civil war, a battle that 2009, venture in the province has gradually spanned 25 years, divided the country, improved and reconstruction is well seeing the east coast abandoned by all under way. A glut of new resorts is under economic and touristic infrastructures after development along the area’s most desirable being left devastated by intense fighting stretch of coastline, Pasikudah Bay. in Colombo is probably your best bet, taking in some of the most breathtaking views over the undulating landscape. Arriving in Batticaloa you will see bullet-riddled shacks and collateral damage from the shattering 2004 tsunami. These remains offer a harrowing insight into the hard reality people in this territory faced during the conflict. A quick 20-minute drive from the seaplane reservoir and you’re at the resort, enjoying a warm Sri Lankan welcome. The main building is surrounded by private villas, which all sit facing the azure Indian Ocean. Each building houses a large bed, private outside area and al fresco bathroom area, with some even boasting their own plunge pools. If you’re lucky enough to bag one of these, be sure to take a magical midnight dip for a spot of stargazing. The grounds are home to a gym and beauty salon, the holistic Sun Aqua Spa, and a large granite swimming pool which faces onto the beach. The long stretch of golden sand boasts the longest shallow coastline on the island of Sri Lanka and shares the same water as the neighbouring Maldives – so you know you’re in good company. Another big draw at Sun Aqua Pasikudah is the food. Gourmet cuisine from around the world is available (you can have eggs benedict for breakfast, for example) but it’s the traditional Sri Lankan cuisine you want to save your appetite for. Local ingredients are used where possible, with many grown in the hotel’s gardens.

TRAVEL / WANDERLUST
SRI LANKA'S LONGEST SHALLOW COASTLINE AT SUN AQUA PASIKUDAH
There are five dining options: our favourites are Latitude for all-day casual al fresco dining, and the Pavilion, which houses a glass-enclosed wine cellar and is ideal for a private celebratory dinner. The lunchtime buffet at the former is quite something – expect a spread of spicy Sri Lankan curries, enormous prawns, roti, dhal, gotu kola mallung (a salad of chillies, ginger, shallots and freshly grated coconut), eggplant moju (deep-fried aubergine with chilli, mustard seeds, cloves and ginger), all finished with bowls of exotic fresh fruit. While the resort offers plenty of activities to keep you entertained for well over a week – scuba diving, volleyball, eating and lying in the sun are just some of the activities you can partake in – a trip to the local sights is well worth pulling yourself away
from the sun lounger and frozen strawberry daiquiris for. A must-do is an excursion to the Maduru Oya National Park, where you’ll likely spot everything from wild boars and water buffalo to the enormous Sri Lankan elephant. Another expedition worth considering is a trip to Dambana to visit the last remaining tribe of Sri Lanka’s indigenous people, the Vedda (which translates as “hunter” in Tamil). While there’s not much to see other than the villagers going about their everyday tasks, there is also a museum with more details about their culture. The service, style and attention to details at Sun Aqua is exceptional, so while you’ll discover a whole new world, with it will be all the luxury comforts you could hope for. A trip to remember indeed. u

ho would have thought you could wake up in Kent, look out of your window and see a rhino? We are in a treehouse (though admittedly it’s not really a treehouse, more a house on a hill accessed by a steep staircase) and in addition to being a comfortable (huge beds, large sofa), stylish (lots of blonde wood) and well-equipped (flawless selfcatering facilities) two bedroom house, its main attraction is the view. From its glazed wall and decked terrace you can see not only across the entire park and its African Experience (rhino, antelope, giraffe) but even to the sea (they say on a good day you can see France). ◆

TRAVEL / NEWS
The Gulf Air
BAHRAIN GRAND PRIX is a global EVENT
RACE FOR THE PRIZE
Proud sponsors of the Bahrain Grand Prix, Gulf Air create a luxe travel experience
T
he Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix is an international Formula One event that draws crowds and coverage from all over the globe. It made history in 2004 as the first Formula One Grand Prix to be held in the Middle East and ever since its inception Gulf Air, Bahrain’s national carrier, has been the Title Sponsor. The prestigious airline has also held the coveted title of Official Carrier of the biennial Bahrain International Airshow since it was held in 2010. This partnership is symbolic of both Gulf Air’s importance to the Kingdom of Bahrain and also the Grand Prix’s place on the world’s sporting stage. The slogan
for this year’s Bahrain Grand Prix race, “On the edge of action”, encapsulates the spirit of the event and promises a real spectacle over the three days in April. Those travelling to Bahrain, either for the race, for business or for pleasure will see the Grand Prix splashed across Gulf Air’s inflight magazine Gulf Life, their inflight TVC and in the Gulf Air Falcon Gold Lounges located in Dubai, Bahrain and London Heathrow. Passengers will be able to peruse the in-flight entertainment from the luxury of the 30 new Falcon Gold Class; these new seats, designed with passenger feedback in mind, convert into fully-flat beds with ample space between seats and even a massage feature. Each seat also comes with complete Audio-Video on Demand (AVOD) features,
55 B&C_April16_ADV_GULF AIR.indd 55
an individual 15-inch touch screen in every seat and high quality noisecancelling headphones. The excellent experience doesn’t stop there; renowned for their traditional Arabian hospitality, Gulf Air offer both a SkyChef and a SkyNanny service. The SkyChef makes sure to prepare tailor-made dishes based on passengers’ particular tastes and preferences, meaning dining on a Gulf Air flight is more like a five star restaurant than an aeroplane while the SkyNannies make sure the little ones are looked after and entertained. All this in addition to the fabulous Gulf Air Falcon Gold lounges means that jetting off to the excitement of the Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix is the most luxurious experience imaginable.

Five young Lewisham sportswomen have put down an athletic marker for their fellow students with success in the London School Games. Just two terms since first forming the members of the under-15 badminton squad were able against the best of the capital’s young players, coming fifth place in the rankings out of 33 London teams. ◆

leep eludes poor Wendy until a trip to her grandfather Walter’s house provides the perfect solution to her insomnia in the shape of the wallpaper in her favourite room depicting famous nursery rhymes. In particular, it is the fiddle-playing cat from ‘Hey! Diddle, Diddle’ that comes to the rescue leading our heroine on a delightful dance through a series of landscapes inspired by other wallpaper in other rooms in the house. This is an enchanting book with illustrations inspired by the work of Walter Crane. ◆

Quite a character Absolutely meets Lord O’Shaughnessy, one of the architects of Tory education reforms, to hear about his new chain of free schools Wo r d s A M a n d a C o n s ta n c e
W
hat do you do once you’ve worked at the very heart of David Cameron’s government as one of the architects of the Tories’ education reforms and then been appointed to the House of Lords as a thank you? Well, you start your own chain of schools, of course. That’s what Lord O’Shaughnessy has done, founding Floreat Education in 2012. After years of working in politics and policy at Number 10, paving the way for academies and free schools, Lord O’Shaughnessy says: “I needed to get my hands dirty in the education sector and set up something new and good.” Floreat Education is a chain of primary free schools in the west London area. Two are already open, in Wandsworth and Brentford, and three more are expected to open this September. “The idea for Floreat has been a long time in the making,” says O’Shaughnessy. The schools are based on the principles of character education, emphasising the pupil’s character strengths as well as rigorous academic study. “We believe character education can be both ‘taught’ and ‘caught’,” says O’Shaughnessy. Extra-curricular activities such as sport and the Duke of Edinburgh Award are classic ways to ‘catch’ character education, but where Floreat is different is that it formally teaches its pupils character traits and what it is to be a good person. Pupils in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 follow a Character Virtue Development Programme designed to develop their virtues of curiosity, honesty, perseverance and service to others, the
YOU DEVELOP
your mind but you also DEVELOP
YOUR MORALS
four core values at Floreat. “It is a very classical education, you develop your mind but you also develop your morals,” says Lord O’Shaughnessy. “This balance between what the Greeks call ‘practical wisdom’ has been the undisputed standard of education for the last 2000 years… It’s only been in the last few decades that we have swung between a very child-centred model and a very standards-only model,” he says. O’Shaughnessy left his job as the Director of Policy and Research for the Prime Minister David Cameron in 2011. He then spent a year at his alma mater, Wellington College, working with the then head Anthony Seldon. “Having Anthony as a mentor and guide was wonderful,” he says, adding that he was very influenced by his time at the school. “The emphasis on character and wellbeing [at Wellington] is at the very
71 CHIS_April16_Education.indd 71
heart of Floreat,” he says. O’Shaughnessy stresses that a character education doesn’t come instead of an academic education but alongside it. “We pursue a knowledgerich academic curriculum”, he says. Indeed, expectations of the children at Floreat are sky high. “We are definitely more formal than any other schools but we are not Gradgrindian,” he says. In his view, “too many schools have an unambitious view of what children are capable of”. With three young children of his own, he says he sees how much children can achieve at a young age. The key when it comes to teaching them, he says, is to make it stretching for the child, “but in a way that is enjoyable” and importantly, “the earlier you start, the less stressful it is”. As one of the key thinkers behind Tory reforms on free schools, it isn’t surprising that O’Shaughnessy is a huge supporter of schools free from local authority control. “Free schools are a way of closing that gap between private and state schools”, he says. “I’ve been living and breathing it.” The future for Floreat is bright. The plan is to create a family of primary schools in the west London area, but to steer clear of secondary schools for the time being (“until we are good at one thing”, he says). His main focus for the next six months is fundraising. “Our ambition is to create world-class schools, and that requires investment,” he says. Since being elevated to the Lords last October, O’Shaughnessy has had to hand over the day-to-day running of the schools – “but,” he laughs, and says despite this, his “hands still seem to be quite dirty”. ◆ floreat.org.uk

BOOK LOVER Sydenham School awards Pupil Library Assistant of the Year 2016 t a prestigious central London ceremony, a fifteen-year-old Lewisham student has been declared Pupil Library Assistant Of The Year 2016. She received her prizes and praise from the current Children’s Laureate Chris Riddell, author of The Wish Factory, The Emperor of Absurdia and the Ottoline series, in front of a packed audience made up of parents, teachers, authors and representatives of the publishers and library organisations responsible for sponsoring the scheme. Dielleza Brava had been nominated by grateful staff at Sydenham School who have come to rely increasingly on the GCSE student as a key member of the Learning Resource Centre (LRC) team. The picture below shows Dielleza in the midst of her beloved ‘stacks’ at Sydenham School where she one of a very few pupils trusted to book items in and out for her fellow students. Her success was due also to the significant part her commitment had had in her personal development: playing a crucial role in her making friends and gaining in confidence. ◆

lackheath High School is moving into a very exciting period of its 136 year history, with a £15m re-development of the Vanbrugh Park site well underway, and an array of innovative and enriching new curriculum developments in both the senior and junior schools. The newly-refurbished Westcombe House Sixth Form centre is due to be unveiled in April 2016, creating a sophisticated and mature space in which the Sixth Form students can work and relax. With break-out workspaces and flexible, innovative study areas, the impressive design will bring more of a professional adult atmosphere to this important pre-university phase of the girls’ education. Girls on the ‘Big Build committee’ were “blown away” on their sneak preview tour. The next phase of the re-development will be even more stunning
with a spectacular new library and creative arts block and science labs. In the second year of Carol ChandlerThompson’s headship, the curriculum is not standing still either! Developments in the sporting provision of the school bring expertise to the coaching and teaching of sport. An ex-England netballer joins the junior staff this Easter to ensure the passion for sport and skills are embedded at an early stage. The senior school Wollstonecraft programme is providing the girls with an array of innovative opportunities and inspiration. It is no wonder then that 75% of leavers last year gained their Russell Group university places, and all the girls leave school confident in their own choices and talents. ◆

he importance of information and identifying market trends. In every market we experience in Blackheath, there are always influences which effect people’s perceptions of what is happening and their decision making processes. In recent years we’ve had a general election, a referendum and significant changes to Stamp Duty Land Tax, to name just a few. In the future there will undoubtedly be more considerations, not least the forthcoming EU referendum. That is why a good agent will need to be well informed in order to offer the best advice. So, while local knowledge will always be incredibly important, there is a growing need to compliment this with a broader understanding of what is happening further afield. ◆

en years ago, if you asked me where I could see myself working and settling down, my answer would probably have been somewhere in the Alps. I am originally from Zagreb, Croatia but both of my parents come from further south – a place called Split and a small island called Solta. I think this is where my love of tranquil surroundings comes from. Back in Croatia my mum is an architect and my father is a building engineer, so I have always been taught to value architecture and design. I even spent time volunteering in Switzerland restoring houses with natural materials. I’ve not had to utilise my skills building with clay, water and straw since, but it was a great experience. A far cry from my love of modern Bauhaus architecture. After graduating from the University of Architecture, I took a well earned rest and spent some time exploring the Alps; from tiny hidden villages to big cities across Austria, Switzerland and France. Personally, I always felt very connected to nature which might be why my affinity to Blackheath’s
I think my relaxed & genuine approach has allowed me to flourish in this industry almost rural setting is so strong. Coming to London was a big decision but I’ve always been one to follow my heart and I knew it was the right thing for me to do. My next big decision was to choose a career. I knew I had to incorporate my love for architecture and interiors along with my desire to work with people – so estate agency was the natural choice. Having lived in Brockley and with my nephew attending school in Blackheath, I was always very fond of Blackheath. I was so attracted by the village feel, the period properties and the rich history. So three years ago, off I went, CV in hand to Humphreys Skitt & Co. It was the only agency I really wanted to work for and from the very beginning I knew the team shared my passion for local property and displayed the
honesty and integrity I’ve always felt is so important. Over the last few years I have been able to express my personal approach to this business. I love to engage with different people, hear their stories about where they are going and offering my help and honest advice. I think my relaxed and genuine approach has allowed me to flourish in this industry. My philosophy in life has always been ‘be honest and be nice to people’, so whether it is a buyer for a studio flat or a vendor of a substantial period residence, everyone will get the same care and attention from me. The longer I work here the more often I see clients wandering around the village - they all smile back, so I think I’m doing something right. When we became Hamptons International in 2014, I think I would be lying if I said I wasn’t worried that things might not be the same. However, I’m glad to say it has the perfect fit and I’m incredibly proud to say I work for Hamptons International. We all share the same passion for people and property and I look forward to many more happy years here. So that’s my story in brief. If I can offer any property advice, you know where I am. u

The profile of our tenants is changing.
The profile of tenants registering with us is changing and as a result we have a large demand for properties that are suitable for those with modest budgets. We especially require 1 and 2 bedroom homes in this area for a growing number of professionals looking for more affordable accommodation. Many of these individuals commute into Central London but cannot afford the rents being demanded in locations close to work and so are instead looking for better value options further afield. Hamptons International offers a range of lettings services tailored to your requirements and qualifies all tenants to the highest degree to ensure our landlords have peace of mind. If you would like to consider letting your property through us, please give us a call to arrange for a free market appraisal. “becoming a hive of recording activity as well as a thriving debauchery camp”. That home was The Wick in Richmond and at the time it included a cottage at the bottom of the garden where, for four months, Keith Richards lived. The Wick was once owned by actor Sir John Mills and the sound of the wind around it reportedly inspired wife Mary to write the novel Whistle Down The Wind, which was made into a film and an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical. It’s now owned by The Who’s Pete Townshend. But Wick Cottage, which used to sit at the bottom of the garden, has since been fenced off and is now for sale. The Grade I listed five bedroom former coach house is next to Richmond Park and has a large garden with panoramic views over Petersham Meadows.
