is the season, once again. Trees are being decorated, mince pies munched and mistletoe is causing awkward moments at office parties. No matter how old I get, I can’t suppress a feeling of rising excitement at this time of year; all it takes is one of those perfectly crisp, cold, clear days and the opening strains of ‘Last Christmas’ drifting through an open window and I start making plans. Luckily, our December issue has Christmas covered from start to finish. Trying to liven up your style for the festive period? We spoke to Naomi Mdudu, Blackheath resident and founder of The Lifestyle Edit, whose ethos is based around women helping women to live well. Read what she has to say about conquering the online world on page 14. Those looking for gift inspiration can enquire within for treats for tots (page 73), trinkets for travellers (page

5 GREE_Dec15_eds_Letter.indd 5

55) and perfect perfume presents – there’s a little something for everyone. In addition to all our Christmas content, we have had a chat with Owen Kenworthy, the new head chef at Blueprint Café. Find out how its feels to take the reins from Jeremy Lee after 18 years on page 42. Ski-enthusiasts can hit the slopes with Gemma Billington on page 48 as she discovers the rock and roll lifestyle to be had in the luxury chalets of Val d’Isère. All of this, along with our usual brilliant fashion, food, interiors and property from our wonderful contributors. I hope you enjoy the issue and, as my mother would say, have a cool Yule and a frantic First. ◆

rap up warm this month and head straight to the Southbank Centre for its Winter at Southbank Centre, boasting a season of exciting events to suit every taste. From music performances, to live shows and food and drink markets, this winter spectacular is definitely the gift that keeps on giving. Which is precisely the theme for 2015: Centred on giving back, Winter at Southbank Centre is bursting with a roster of shows, celebrations, and festive activities all dedicated to fundraising for charitable causes. Head over to the Charity Shop Emporium to browse gifts for friends or family. Or, if you’d prefer to donate through dance, why not take part in the eight-hour (you read that

ON SITE will be pop-up VINTAGE NIGHTCLUBS and a decadent DINING AREA right) Charity Dance Marathon, twirling through the decades and beginning at the 1930s. The Charity Shop Fashion Show will teach you how to style thrifty pieces, while the Reworn Workshop offers a chance to ‘upcycle’ old items to create them into something entirely new. To get your festive food and drink fix, the Rekorderlig Cider lodge, designed in the style of a typical Scandinavian house, provides drinks and street food in

13 GR_DEC15_Local_Feature.indd 13

its cosy alpine surroundings, while the Southbank Winter Market offers an array of Christmas delights in the form of tasty festive fare and artisanal crafts ideal for last minute gift buying. For the little ones there’s a variety of shows guaranteed to entertain all ages including the wacky-yet-wonderful We Are The Monsters and La Soirée, a fusion of cabaret, burlesque and circus acts in one show. The highlight, though, would have to be Slava’s Snowshow, a clownthemed stage spectacle with guaranteed laughs. Classical music lovers will also be satisfied with the Christmas by Frank Sinatra concert by the London Concert and performances by the London Philharmonic Orchestra featuring Rebecca Ferguson. Finally, to end the year’s festivities, The New Year’s Eve Celebration will (ironically) turn back time to bring in the new year with its vintage party, taking over five floors of the Royal Festival Hall. On site will be pop-up vintage nightclubs, a decadent dining area, a retro hair and beauty salon, and a private terrace for the perfect view of the New Year’s Eve fireworks. Packed with events and activities to get you through the winter blues, it’s easy to see why Southbank is the place to be this season. u Throughout DeceMber

QUEEN of the Screen

Fashion editor-turned-entrepreneur Naomi Mdudu talks launching The Lifestyle Edit and her love of digital media Wo r d s S t e p h a n i e K i n g

“I

was bored of this content that was so aspirational it had no bearing on anyone's life. I thought, Why is it that the magazines and the publications we read don't reflect the real-life things that we’re facing? It was really important for me to do just that.” Naomi Mdudu explains the concept behind her business. By all accounts the founder and editor of women’s advice website, The Lifestyle Edit, is average: average height, average build, with dark brown hair and eyes. But if you believe this you’d be horrifically mistaken, because the powerhouse responsible for the “online toolkit to a stylish lifestyle” could not be any further from average. In her mid-20s Mdudu has already had an impressive career: Fashion Editor of Metro; City A.M. Life & Style Features Writer; PR to luxury Italian handbag label Alessandra Ferreira; and assisting

GREE_Dec15_NAOMI MDUDU.indd 14

ONLINE you CAN TAKE things into YOUR own HANDS. That’s what makes DIGITIAL SO EXCITING on photo shoots for Glamour, Tatler and Harper’s Bazaar. She’s even graduated from a law degree – “I come from a very academic family.” But since February 2015 the savvy Blackheath local has been changing the conversation with her revolutionary dot-com. “The women you're talking to are dynamic. Just because you’re interested in style, doesn't mean you're not interested in anything else,” asserts Mdudu. Well said – and spotted – because a platform like this is long overdue: “It was one of those things where you have an idea and if you don't do it now, somebody else is going to.”

The Lifestyle Edit cuts through the proverbial BS and shares interesting, relatable, actually useful content with its mid-20s to mid-30s female readership. Her salient features covering all aspects of life, from careers and personal style to dating and wellness, continue to be eyed by thousands, and her candid interviews with women – including Suits actress Meghan Markle, model Rosie HuntingtonWhiteley, singer Foxes and Pandora Sykes, Sunday Times Style’s Fashion Features Editor – prove to be fascinating, inspirational reads. And the big brands also agree: Mdudu’s original perspective has encouraged several companies to collaborate with her, the latest being Banana Republic. But the successful entrepreneur warns, “I just did a talk at London Fashion Weekend and the thing that people always want to know is ‘How can I make money out of my blog?’ That should never be the starting point. Instead of looking at the outcome, it should be about making sure

that you hone your skills; have beautiful photography; the quality of your writing is on point; that you’re offering something unique.” Coincidentally (or not so coincidentally), other avid believers of this ‘quality over quantity’ mentality include Mdudu’s favourite fashion designers: “I endorse everything that Phoebe [Philo, Creative Director of Céline] stands for. She is so in tune with her own aesthetic, and the clothes are uncompromising when it comes to quality and craftsmanship. That’s why my second favourite brand would be Stella McCartney because again, her clothes allow you to see the women in them.” Who does this seasoned veteran feel is one British designer to watch? “Charlie May,” advises Mdudu. “She is the epitome of fashion in 2015. She's been able to harness her social media following (of about 150,000 Instagram followers) and is one of the first examples of the fact that you don't have to go down the traditional

The Princess of Wales

path. Online you can take things into your own hands. That’s what makes digitial so exciting.” Mdudu’s shock departure earlier this year from the national newspaper makes sense now. “Metro was a wonderful opportunity and one I’m eternally grateful for, but digital is my love,” she states. “When you work on a newspaper, much of your day is spent sitting at your

17 GREE_Dec15_NAOMI MDUDU.indd 17

Charlie May AW15

desk. I love having the freedom to be out all day. Some days I love nothing more than having an office day. It’s that kind of flexibility I really enjoy.” Mdudu’s current schedule means that she’s been able to make some discoveries close to home: “The great thing about Blackheath, we’re absolutely spoilt for choice. We have a farmers’ market every other weekend; you can get everything from meat and cheese to organic fresh produce. For breakfast, whenever any of my mates come from any other part of London, I take them to Chapters, right by the church on the heath.” And watering holes? “My favourite pub is The Railway Pub, it’s like our little gem. [As is] The Princess of Wales. It’s amazing.” With a jam-packed 2015 behind her Mdudu’s looking forward to an even better 2016: “[Next year] I want to continue to feel excited and inspired to do what I do. I’d love to do a half-marathon and challenge myself physically as well as mentally.” In addition to achieving these goals, she’s also got plenty of “exciting things in the pipeline” for The Lifestyle Edit: “We’re going to be focusing more on international, so you’ll get to see content straight from New York. We’ll be doing a lot more offline experiences, where you’ll be able to meet like-minded women at incredible events.” Clearly Mdudu has written herself a new life path, and she leaves those who’ve ever entertained the idea of career change with the encouragement, “It is rewarding beyond your wildest imagination.” ◆ l The Lifestyle Edit thelifestyleedit.com

This year has witnessed huge brand unions, but there’s plenty more where that came from. Before Christmas additional killer combinations will be unveiled – the most noted, of course, being Burberry’s Claridge’s Christmas tree. Featuring metallic gold and silver fabriccovered umbrellas, the tree-shaped sculpture by Chief Creative & Executive Officer Christopher Bailey will take up residence in the iconic hotel’s foyer. Fittingly Nicholas Kirkwood’s Christmas mini-range of Lurex-covered styles (above) will make for perfect gifts under the tree, as will Lacoste’s line of Charles Schulz’ Peanuts pieces. Now with just-announced shoe label Charlotte Olympia and MAC Cosmetics’ March 2016 release, next year is already looking very promising for limited editions... ◆

hen it comes to party season glamour, there are two essentials that complete the look: hair and nails. The perfect blowdry combined with glossy, gorgeous nails is the ultimate winter pick-me-up. So, naturally, upon hearing that Pure Synergie were offering a pampering hair and shellac nails package, it seemed like the ideal opportunity to kill two beauty-birds with one stone. I was greeted by the lovely owner of the salon, Rosemarie, who was going to be doing my nails. While she worked her magic buffing, shaping and painting an on-trend natural beige, we discussed the stylish Scandi-style interior inspired by Rosemarie's native

I LEFT with partyready HAIR AND PERFECTLY painted NAILS country Denmark, and Pure Synergie's vision of providing the best possible service for clients from her team of well-trained stylists. Next, my hair was transformed from a limp and lifeless ponytail to bouncing, bodacious waves in the style of the salon's signature blow-dry. The result? Leaving with party-ready hair and perfectly painted fingers. Nailed it. â—†

THE TWELVE SPRAYS OF CHRISTMAS If you are extremely lucky, you might find a rare fragrance under the tree this year W o r d s l aw r e n c e r o u l l i e r w h i t e A Partridge In A Pear Tree

Nine Ladies Dancing

Cosmic by Solange Azagury-Partridge: definitely one for the top of the tree, a sparkling chypre with a floral centre. Cosmic contains ground meteorite dust, stardust.

Bal a Versailles by Jean Desprez: this cult fragrance disappeared for years but this year it made a welcome return, although production and supply is limited.

Ten Lords A-Leaping

Two Nocturnal Doves

Gunpowder Rose by Union: news of Guy Fawkes’ failed plot had members of the House of Lords jumping out of their seats. The fragrance contains English rose oil, an ingredient seldom, if ever, seen in perfumery.

De La Nuit No. 1 and No. 3 by Roja Dove: extra extravagant, luxe deluxe, sexy and sensual. 6

Three French Men’s

Eleven Pipers Piping

Molinard Homme I, II & III: classic colognestyle Eau de Toilettes for men, universally adored in superb styling fit for any bathroom, the perfect gift for those hard-tobuy-for gents.

Four Calling Birds

Coal by Andrea Maack: ‘calling’ is a corruption of ‘colly’ birds, meaning blackbirds, as in colliery. Coal by Andrea Maack, from Iceland: a dark and cold scent with flashes of hot spice.

Five Gold Rings

Piper Leather by Illuminum: fortunately for our purposes piper is Latin for pepper, which appears in perfume more frequently than any band of minstrels.

Twelve Drummers Drumming

1805 By BeauFort London: whilst twelve drummers might be drumming one is also making perfume. Beaufort London is the brainchild of The Prodigy’s live drummer, Leo Crabtree. ◆ roullierwhite.com

Porta Del Cielo by Linari: 22 carat gold banding adorns this celestial scent by Mark Buxton. Fruity opulence with a powdery coating.

Six Geese A-Laying

Incitatus by Electimuss: remembers the legendary horse, this unique animalic fragrance has a heart of warm straw.

Seven Swans A-Swimming

Bolshoi, Black Swan by Guerlain: about as rare as a rare fragrance can get, officially only available in Moscow.

Eight Maids A-Milking

Palo Santo by Carner Barcelona: unusually contains notes of warm milk at its heart. Deliciously creamy.

he banks of the Thames have long been home to some of the best eateries in London, not to mention many of the capital’s most important cultural venues. Among these is the Design Museum which in turn houses the Blueprint Café; until recently the restaurant was in the very safe hands of Jeremy Lee, who some readers may recognise from his stint on the Great British Menu. After 18 years at the helm of the Blueprint Café, the baton has been passed to Owen Kenworthy. Formerly of the Head Chef at Brawn in Columbia Road, Owen will be bringing his own particular flavour to the menu, with an emphasis on simply prepared seasonal ingredients. The Design Museum looks set to be the perfect backdrop to Owen’s unfussy, elegant modern European cuisine and we caught up with him recently to find out more.

ABSOLUTELY: Why did you choose to move from Brawn to Blueprint? OWEN KENWORTHY: The last five years at Brawn were very exciting and a big achievement. But the opportunity to follow in someone like Jeremy Lee’s footsteps is a very attractive challenge. ABS: How would you characterise the new menu at Blueprint? OK: Modernised classical.

THE HEAD CHEF picked me up and PUT ME IN THE SINK

ABS: What is your signature dish (if you have one)? OK: It’s early days at Blueprint and signature dishes evolve over time. I love slow cooking and curing. Also making pasta, which I find relaxing. My scallop and crab raviolo is a popular dish at the moment. ABS: How would you characterise your cooking style? OK: In my career, I’ve been lucky to

work with chefs who put a high value on cooking honest food, using classic recipes and methods, mostly French. ABS: Are you very much influenced by the position of the restaurant, so close to the river? OK: Although the restaurant is close to the river and has an elegant setting, I’m actually more influenced by Jeremy Lee and his achievements, though fish is more prevalent on my menu.

ABS: What is your favourite restaurant (other than Blueprint Café) in the area? OK: 40 Maltby Street: great food, great wine and knowledgeable staff. ABS: If you couldn’t be a chef, what would you be? OK: A farmer. I’ve always been a very hands-on person.

ABS: What is your favourite ingredient to use in winter? OK: My favourite winter ingredient has to be cabbage.

ABS: If you could give your younger self one piece of advice, what would it be? OK: Get over yourself. And remember to write everything down!

ABS: What has been your funniest moment in the kitchen? OK: When I got my first job as a commis chef through college 20 years ago, I was asked to wash some pans in a busy service. I thought it beneath my

he restaurant immediately gives off a relaxed yet sophisticated vibe and before even trying to narrow down our evening’s food options, we opt for the polenta chips dusted in parmesan cheese with accompanying aioli. These crunchy morsels are exactly what we need to nibble on while making our important meal choices. We finally order starters; I have the earthy beetroot carpaccio with goats cheese tempura, honey and hazelnuts which bursts with flavour. My friend however goes for the roasted figs with buffalo mozzarella and Parma ham. My glorious 28-day aged prime rib-eye steak then arrives in front of me. It is enormous and juicy and the accompanying béarnaise sauce brings a welcomed richness to the dish. I power through it, as any respectable young man should, but have to abandon my side of chips in order to finish. Once our dishes are swept away, my friend and I simultaneously reach for the cocktail menu. We go for the classics; myself choosing the espresso martini and my friend going for her favourite – the mai tai. The smooth and rich espresso martini seamlessly complements my dessert tasting plate I was given ample supply of peanut and chocolate brownie, honey baked cheesecake and caramelised pear and almond tart. And while I did feel a little food envy for my friend’s sticky toffee pudding, I was more than content with my choices and reluctant to leave this comforting winter retreat. ◆

A

fter launching their immensely successful ‘Not Afternoon Tea’, the OXO Tower Restaurant have come over all traditional with their ‘Afternoon tea’ offering. The iconic building, overlooking the Thames, has long been a destination for tourists and Londoners alike looking to indulge in a good meal with a killer view. When my friend and I arrive we are whisked to our table, situated next to the ceiling-high windows. Unfortunately, due to it being winter in London, clouds and drizzle obscure the scene somewhat but not matter what the weather OXO still manages to bring the drama. Comfortably seated and champagne in hand, we peruse the tea menu (the food menu is set) and choose Peppermint and Red Berry respectively. All teas served in the restaurant hail from Tregothnan, the only estate in England that produces homegrown tea. After a few warming sips, the hype is understandable – it’s a jolly good cup of tea. Wonderful tiered trays laden with finger

sandwiches, scones and nibbles appear. The best of these are the Severn and Wye smoked salmon and dill crème fraîche on black rye bread which is packed with flavour and the incredibly moreish Mrs Kirkham’s Lancashire cheese and plum chutney on tomato bread. The mini Yorkshire puddings with braised beef, horseradish cream and watercress are a full roast dinner in a single mouthful and there is almost a fight over the last the Dorset crab choux bun. Honorable mention must also go to the seasonal homemade jams served with the scones which were really excellent, especially the sweet, sticky raspberry. By the time the cakes rolled round we were almost defeated, just managing to munch down the sharp yet creamy autumn trifle and a few bites of Amaretto-sweet plum bakewell tart before lapsing into a coma of contentment. Splendid. ◆

etween the thrill of the slopes and the hedonism of après-ski, sometimes the only chance to enjoy a moment’s peace in Val d’Isère is on the ski lifts. Sitting on the rickety, slow-moving chairlift, you suddenly have time to truly take in your surroundings. There’s the powdersoft snow below your ski-clad feet, and the dramatic mountain peaks that glisten in the sunlight, stretching as far as the eye can see. It’s an otherworldly beauty that – try as you might with cold, gloveless fingers – can never be captured on camera. There is no Instagram filter that could do these views justice. Val d’Isère and the neighbouring town of Tignes form the expansive ski resort Espace Killy, named in honour of local sporting hero, Jean-Claude Killy. The region covers some 300km of pistes with over 44km of cross country action and 137 runs. Val d’Isère attracts a loyal clientele who return season after season, often comprised of the well-heeled younger generation who arrive en masse in neon thermals to let their hair down at the

legendary après-ski hangouts. This includes the world-famous La Folie Douce, an icon of alpine debauchery since 1980. Today Val d’Isère is regarded as one of the world’s finest ski resorts, but it wasn’t until the early 90s in the run-up to the 1992 Albertville Winter Olympics, when it hosted the men’s downhill skiing event, that it was really put on the map. It is in the heart of this picture-postcard town, hidden among a cluster of large but fairly innocuous-looking chalets, that you will find Val d’Isère’s most exclusive address. Chalet Marco Polo is the Rolls Royce of ski accommodation, offering the kind of rock star lifestyle that one can only imagine takes place on Jay Z’s mega yacht. Named the ‘Best Ski Chalet in France’ by the World Ski Awards for the past two years running, Chalet Marco Polo is part of an impressive portfolio of super-deluxe chalets owned and operated by Consensio, all of whose properties are hand-picked and fully catered, offering the ultimate in five-star luxury. Spread across four floors and covering some 1000m sq ft of space, Chalet Marco Polo comfortably accommodates up to 14 people. The six bedrooms are all ensuite, unique in style and equipped with

THE WALLS ARE CLAD in 24-carat gold MOSAIC

Christian Lacroix toiletries. However, it’s at the main entrance that you’re greeted with the chalet’s jewel in the crown. Inside the large wooden main door is a luxurious swimming pool and hot tub area decorated like a Buddhist temple. The walls are clad in 24-carat gold mosaic, the pool lit an ethereal green with an impressive, albeit unnecessary, dropdown projector screen. The intricate wooden ceiling above the pool was drafted in from a 150-year-old Moroccan souk. Wellness extends to the lower levels, where you’ll find a state-of-theart gym with two of everything so that couples can workout together. Next door there’s a treatment room, a hammam and two hydro massage beds to soothe aching, post-ski legs. That is, of course, if you can pry yourself away from the chalet to hit the slopes in the first place. Skiing almost feels like a superfluous activity when faced with the dizzying amount on offer at the chalet, and it soon becomes difficult to leave its sheepskin throw warmth and Cire Trudon-infused radiance. Not least because guests are waited on hand and foot by a team of

friendly and efficient staff, including an excellent in-house chef and beauty therapist. No request is too much; my hand is rarely without a glass of freshly poured Perrier Jouët. The team expertly strikes the balance of being genuinely cordial without becoming sycophantic, professional yet never aloof. They’ll recommend the best restaurants and clubs, drive you practically to the foot of the ski lift lest your legs do any unnecessary additional exercise, and even

fill your bathtub with snow so that you can snap an outlandish bikini-clad selfie (not me, but this did happen). Aside from the first-rate service and unlimited amenities (which also include a games room with pool table and arcade machines, and a fantastic wine tasting room), what makes Chalet Marco Polo stand out is its spectacular decor. A melange of exotic and contemporary styles on the backdrop of a classic alpine chalet, the interior might seem haphazard on paper – think colourful, exotic furniture, Pop Art style paintings and sculpture-like glass chandeliers – yet everything works in complete harmony. The effect is elegant and extraordinary, and every detail, right down to the last doorknob, has been hand-selected by the chalet’s owner, Jean Bernard Montel. This polite French businessman has rather exceptional taste; book your holiday here and you’ll be admired for yours, too. But be warned: adjusting to normal life back home will be no mean feat. ◆

he Kent-based Beoshop group – the largest independently-owned group of Bang & Olufsen retailers in the UK – gave customers even more reason to celebrate in the run up to Christmas with an exclusive event that commemorated 90 years of the iconic audio-visual brand. Hosted at the beautiful home of the prestigious London Golf Club, near Brands Hatch, on the evening of 19th November, the exclusive VIP evening was attended by over 200 of the group’s customers. The night offered visitors a unique insight into the illustrious history of Bang & Olufsen and the opportunity to sample the latest products from the esteemed brand. To provide customers with an unprecedented and personal demonstration experience, the Beoshop group split the luxurious venue into three zones – heritage, multiroom, and PLAY. 1 WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE ERA IN DESIGN?

I am a total sucker for midcentury design, from 1950s textiles to midcentury furniture (my Danish teak coffee table makes me very happy).

2 WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PIECE OF FURNITURE YOU SELL?

I recently launched a new collection of upholstery fabrics and, to mark the launch, had two 1960s Ercol armchairs restored and covered in two of the designs. I am particularly attached to the chair which was covered in the ‘Betty’ fabric (named after my great auntie), which is a vivid emerald with an abstract print. It evolved from marks made by printing with the bottom of a Colman’s Mustard tin!

My mum is a New Zealander and it is such a beautiful country.

5

8 WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FILM IN TERMS OF DESIGN?

3 WHAT IS YOUR MOST TREASURED POSSESSION?

A Lulu Guinness bag which my husband gave me as a wedding gift.

A Single Man, Tom Ford. A visual treat and set in the 1960s, too.

4 WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE TRAVEL DESTINATION?

9 WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE EAST DULWICH HANG OUT?

With kids: Franco Manca for the ultimate pizza. Without kids: Toasted for a glass or two of wine.

I’d have to say New Zealand, as my Mum is a New Zealander and it is such a beautiful country. Not to mention the wine... 5

10 WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PATTERN/PRINT YOU USE IN YOUR DESIGNS?

WHO IS YOUR STYLE ICON?

Iris Apfel.

I’m a bit fickle, but it’s currently my new ‘Zebras’ design. I love the combination of black and white against the warm yellow background, as well as the fact that it seems to appeal to both adults and little ones.◆

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PIECE OF ART? 6

‘Frida and Diego Rivera, 1931’, by Frida Kahlo, a postcard of which has permanent residence in my studio. 7 WHO IS YOUR FAVOURITE DESIGNER?

SMALL TALK The top products for cold winter days and cosy Christmas nights

hese multi-coloured LED night light comforters from Aloka are the latest baby sleep-aids to hit the market. Rotating through 12 different colours, each one brings a sense of calm to the room, lulling baby into peaceful reveries. As the parent of a baby who really fights nap times, the light and music has been a godsend: the Aloka night light provides a suitable distraction to send her off calmly. Each light comes with a remote control, which is great for older pre-schoolers as they can switch between different colour settings; for older children there’s a white setting so that the light can double up as a reading lamp. There’s even a special rainbow show and a timer, so parents needn’t return to turn out the light after sneaking out. ◆

KIDS & EDUCATION / SCHOOL TALK

Get it Right What makes a good education? Sir Anthony Seldon set out his stall at the Tatler Schools Live! Event Wo r d s A M a n d a C o n s ta n c e

W

hat makes a good education? That’s what a lot of women with glossy hair and good heels wanted to know at the first Tatler Schools Live! event in London. Described by the compere, newsreader Mary Nightingale, as “a drinks party, with headmistresses” the Tatler show brought some of the brightest stars from the educational firmament together to discuss, debate and inform. Sir Anthony Seldon, puckish as ever, set out his stall for why former independent school pupils have become dominant across society. This is not because of their academic achievements, he argued, but because their grounding in so-called soft skills prepared them well for 21st century jobs. “If it’s not tested, measured and examined, it’s not education is it?” he poised in typically controversial style. Sir Anthony has often criticised the state education system, saying that its “remorseless drive for exam success” and obsession with league tables means that it’s no longer “fit for purpose”. He said – perhaps unsurprisingly given that his audience had shelled out hundreds of pounds for a ticket – that the state sector has “much to learn from the success of the British independent school model”. But Sir Anthony cautioned parents against getting caught up in the arms race that private education has become. “The best parents choose the school for the child, the worst parents choose the school for themselves,” he said. “There is something terribly wrong about parents who push their child towards a certain school – who tutor, stress and strain. An unhappy childhood will stay with you for the rest of your life,” he warned. He revealed that his own parents had wanted him to go to Winchester, but “I wasn’t bright enough” and didn’t get in.

Independent schools have embraced positive psychology. Sir Anthony described the rising incidence of mental health issues in senior schools as a “terrible malaise”. He pointed out that when he introduced well-being and positive psychology techniques at Wellington College more than a decade ago he was “blasted by the Mail and Telegraph for indulging in psychobabble”. Now techniques such as mindfulness are becoming the norm in the private sector.

The best parents

CHOOSE THE SCHOOL FOR THE CHILD, the worst parents CHOOSE THE SCHOOL for THEMSELVES “Mum and Dad were mortified, it took them 20-30 years to recover,” he joked. “Love is about letting people be independent, not creating a mini-me. As a head, I see it again and again.” Sir Anthony set out his (very personal) list of five things about educating people for life that he believes independent schools do well. Independent schools work with the whole child. Citing Howard Gardner of Harvard University’s work on the theories of mulitple intelligences, Sir Anthony explained that every child has extraordinary faculties whether they are academic, sporting or creative; it is the job of education to tease them out.

71 CHIS_Dec15_Education.indd 71

Sir Anthony has gone on record on the need for more creativity in education. He urged the audience to watch educationalist Ken Robinson’s Ted Talk on the subject of creativityand education. Character and grit. A good, modern education must build resilience for the stresses and strains of the modern world. He told the audience to turn to Artistotle because “everything we need to know about what being a good human being is was written by Aristotle (and Buddha and Confuscius)”. And finally, he dwelled upon the famous quote by American poet Henry David Thoreau: “The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to their graves with their song still inside them.” He said: “Our jobs as educators is to release that song,” he said. “As parents you must release the inner song of your child, not impose your own. Your children are not your children, they are themselves... I’m going to say something pretty shocking,” he said. “Your child will get the same grades whatever senior school they go to, but if you get the right school you’ve got a happy child.” And he left the stage to thunderous applause. u

fter 16 years on our screens Channel 4’s Grand Designs TV show is now a national institution. What few will remember is that it all started in London in 1999 at a house on Stock Orchard Street in Islington. Episode 1, Series 1 Grafton Crescent, Camden

’ve worked in and around the property sector for the last 10 years and there is no job that I would rather do; seeing different properties and meeting different people on a daily basis means that no two days are ever the same. The team I have around me are second to none and we work as one rather than competing with each other which, I think, gives us the edge in this very competitive market and makes our office a happy place to be. Being based in such a prime location in central Greenwich, we are witnessing first-hand the positive increase in both supply and demand for investors and homeowners alike; we have experienced an influx of people relocating from north and west London, taking advantage of, and appreciating, the transport links, history, and lifestyle that Greenwich has to offer. Greenwich for me is an exciting and vibrant place, I love everything it has to offer from the multitude of restaurants to the food market which has a rich choice of dishes from across the world. If this alone is not enough,

I BELIEVE ANYBODY THAT VISITS GREENWICH WOULD FIND IT VERY DIFFICULT NOT TO FALL IN LOVE

the historic monuments located in the town centre, such as the Cutty Sark, Royal Observatory, and the naval college will surely win you over; the Cutty Sark is famous around the world and celebrated once a year with a fantastic tall ships event. I believe anybody that visits for the first time would find it very difficult not to fall in love with its charm and elegance that is very apparent when you walk around the high streets, park, and university grounds. The development along the Thames has pulled the area together and has helped put the Royal Borough on the map; because we only have a small section of land available to build on along the river, not one development is the same. This offers buyers a variety of new and unique riverside developments, with many different features, for

example, The River Gardens offers apartment owners access to an onsite swimming pool, gym, business hub, and also full use of the tennis courts. We are now seeing increased prices in other parts of South East London, with places like Lewisham, Deptford, Charlton, and Woolwich now becoming some of the our most sought after locations. Crossrail is also paying a big part in the migration of people to this area, and next year I expect to see more clients coming over from north of the river. We are also one of the last places in London where you can still find a truly suburban lifestyle thanks to our green spaces. We at JLL Greenwich and Blackheath have always been committed to South East London, and will continue to be so! We dedicate a lot of our time to making sure our clients are looked after, this is, after all, one of the biggest purchases or sales most people will make in their lifetimes and it can be a very stressful process. Having an understanding ear or a friendly face is a great help and our clients appreciate our efforts! u

FROM COLMAN COYLE GIVES HIS EXPERT ADVICE ON ALL OF YOUR LEGAL PROPERTY QUESTIONS Q

A

I HAVE JUST MOVED INTO A HOUSE AND DISCOVERED THE LOFT IS FULL OF THE SELLER’S POSSESSIONS. IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO ABOUT THIS?

T

he contract that you and your seller would have entered into would have stated that the property was sold with vacant possession. This means that not only should the sellers have physically moved out but all their possessions should also be removed from the property as well. Furthermore, as far as the conveyancing process is concerned, the seller would have completed a form called a Property Information Form and one of the questions on this form relates to rubbish being removed from the property including lofts, gardens, outbuildings, garages and sheds. Therefore, your seller is strictly speaking, in breach of contract because they have not given vacant possession in accordance with the terms of the contract. My advice is to arrange for the loft

to be cleared, and if it involves any additional expense – for example, hiring a skip – then send the receipt and invoice for the out-of-pocket expense to your solicitors and ask them to forward a copy to the seller’s solicitors with a view to the seller footing the bill. If the sellers pay, then I think that result would be satisfactory; but if it falls on deaf ears, there isn’t much more you can do because taking some form of legal action is simply not going to be worth your while because the cost of pursuing such an action would far outweigh the money at stake. When you move again, to avoid the same problem, I would suggest that you ask your solicitor to really emphasise the fact that you are expecting the loft to be fully cleared and if necessary, you could visit the property shortly before completion to check that the property has been fully cleared. u
