ost people are content to excel at one thing. Then there are those who put all the rest of us to shame. Neisha Crosland is one such person, having become a beacon of originality and vibrancy in the world of interiors and textiles and, much more recently, as an author, too. This September will see the London local’s book Life of a Pattern in print, providing an insight into her design process and inspirations, from the wrong turn in the V&A that inspired her career to her stepfather Roald Dahl’s profound influence. Read our interview with her on page 58. or four days every May, the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea are filled with lavish plant displays and the best in cutting-edge garden design, all courtesy of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. But after all the visitors have left and the competitions are over, what happens to all those beautiful plants? Cue The Great Plant Rescue at Farmopolis, part of Greenwich Peninsula's exciting new urban farming project in conjunction with Wayward and Secret Productions. As the Official Reuse Partner of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, The Great Plant Rescue has salvaged tens of thousands of Chelsea's plants to create a truly unique

A much-needed GREEN OASIS for the CAPITAL floating garden surrounded by the iconic vistas of the Thames. The space is a muchneeded green oasis for the capital, which is constantly under urban development. Jo Vidler, director of acclaimed event company Secret Productions, said of the project, “we want[ed] to connect the

dots between the community, events and culture, and create a movement where they all feed off each other in a really unique environment”. The garden, which will open to the public on Saturday 30th July, will also host a series of creative events throughout August. Included in the line-up are the Arcola Theatre Children's Workshops, a handful of sessions aimed at developing different theatrical skills with an environmental message. Suitable for ages 5 to 12, the workshops will explore the use of ecofriendly materials to make costumes and puppets as well as learning about the animals that might live in the gardens. Other events include still life drawing workshops, group singing classes and flower press printing. The garden is free to enter, though a donation of £3 is suggested on arrival. This keeps Farmopolis accessible to all and the donations contribute to the upkeep of the gardens as well as helping local educational enterprises. But this is only the beginning, The Great Plant Rescue is merely the first phase of the overall plans for The Jetty at Greenwich Peninsula. Further plans have been put in place for a makers-space, food incubator, hydroponic farming, year-round event programming and much more. As London's largest regeneration project, Farmopolis is setting the bar high in the world of environmental development. Watch this space. 

Why can’t we DO IT IN THE UK? ‘Beacuse the

WEATHER’S RUBBISH!,’ said the AUSSIES CH: What is it about open air cinema that attracts people even despite the sometimes terrible weather? GW: The weather, which you think would be a factor, isn’t at all. It’s all about the experience. There is a general boredom with the multiplex experience – people like to watch their favourite films in a different setting. The thing I love most of all is that communal feeling that you get, a big

eet George. George is the person who, despite our infamously soggy summers and temperamental climate, thought outdoor cinema would be a great idea for England. Luckily, he was right. Eight years on, Luna Cinema is a resounding success with screenings all over the country and it all started once upon a time in Dulwich Park after a particularly nasty scooter accident... CATHERINE HALES: What gave you the idea for Luna Cinema? GEORGE WOOD: Eight years ago was working as an actor and there were never many jobs over the summer; as a result I had always wanted to start a little summer business. I was commuting into London for a play and I got knocked off my scooter at the Elephant and Castle roundabout and broke my leg; it was a nasty break and I wound up in hospital not being allowed to work for five to six months. It was probably all the morphine running around my system but I suddenly thought about

my summer business idea. I had seen outdoor cinema before about ten years earlier in Australia and thought, ‘What a great idea, why don’t we do it in the UK? To which my Aussie friends replied, ‘Because the weather is rubbish!’ CH: But you decided to try it anyway? GW: I did. It was there and then in the hospital bed that I rang up venues and asked if they had ever tried open air cinema. The reply I got most often was that they hadn’t or that they had done open air theatre but never cinema. It was very lucky timing that we were the first ones to approach Hampton Court Palace and Kew Gardens and other big venues with this concept. We did our first screening at Dulwich Park which is my local park; it was instantly popular, everyone in the local community came out. So, I invested my life savings in a screen and projector and that’s how it all began. It’s grown from that one screening to what is now 160 odd screenings this summer, two a night, six nights a week.

15 Dul_Aug16_LUNA CINEMA.indd 15

audience watching a film that they know and love, singing along or shouting out. There’s always a murmur of, ‘Oh, I love this bit,’ and ‘Do you remember this?’ It’s a really social experience. You do find that people come year on year, it’s not a try it once and tick it off kind of thing. CH: Was your first film a classic? GW: Yes it was. We did a public vote, because I didn’t want to have to choose the first film – too much responsibility! – and the people of Dulwich chose Some Like It Hot which is still one of the best films we do. I love it, we show it every year. CH: Do you do any screenings outside of London? GW: Yes, very much so. In fact, three years ago our quest was to be the first open air cinema in Britain to be fully nationwide. So although we started in the South East,

it became apparent that the formula of a classic film on a big screen in a great setting would work just as well out of London. We’ve now got two teams that tour around: one that stays in the South East and one that goes everywhere else. And I really mean everywhere else. We do Edinburgh Botanic Gardens, Warwick Castle, Blenheim Palace and Cardiff Castle over in Wales. CH: Are they always very well attended? GW: They really are. The popularity of open air cinema has grown year on year. What’s great about it is that the films that we show are often the classics, they’re the films that people know and love. I mean, you never get bored of Top Gun or The Goonies. CH: What do you think it is that makes Luna Cinema so special? GW: It’s a question that I often ask myself. The answer is that we present the film in the best possible way. The technology has come such a long way in the eight years that we have been going; the screen, the sound the projectors, it’s incredible – it’s just like being in an indoor cinema. But really, what sets us apart from all the others is the venues. To be sat in Hampton Court Palace at sunset or Kew Gardens or Warwick Castle, these incredible settings

WE HAVE VIP DINGHIES at Brockwell Lido FOR OUR screening of JAWS are just incomparable. Next week we’re in Leeds Castle in Kent, which is one of the most magical castle settings. You’re there, watching your favourite film and it’s that unique experience that really sets us apart from the rest. You can find open air cinemas all over the country now and but I always make sure that we are the premium offering: we are the country’s biggest open air cinema. CH: Do you have food trucks and bars that come to the venues? GW: That’s a good question, because food and drink is a key part of open air cinema. It can really enhance the experience. The

policy is that we always invite the audience to bring a picnic but in addition, we always make sure that we have fantastic food and drink on site. We have a full bar (the Luna Bar) that’s designed to look like a cinema set up and then our food partners. We have a stone baked pizza place and a full barbecue with pulled pork burgers. CH: What is your favourite South East London venue? GW: There is something really special about Brockwell Lido, which is the outdoor swimming pool in Herne hill. We do Jaws there every year. It’s become our calling card; we have VIP dinghies in the water and it’s the screening that we have become best known for. CH: Has anyone ever fallen out of their dinghy? GW: You know what, they haven’t. I’m convinced it’s going to happen every time – we were there last night and I was fully expecting a call from the front of house staff to say that someone had gone in the water. We’re screening Titanic there next, which should be something.

17 Dul_Aug16_LUNA CINEMA.indd 17

CH: Anywhere else? GW: Dulwich Park. It’s my home venue if you like, just round the corner, and it’s also where we started so there’s always something special about going back there. We do Crystal Palace and are going to Greenwich Park this weekend, which is an amazing venue overlooking the whole of the city. We deliberately put the screen up right next to the Royal Observatory so the audience can watch the film whilst also having an amazing view of London. CH: Do you have any favourite Dulwich haunts? GW: When I first started the cinema, I lived in East Dulwich and I’ve since moved to West Norwood which is ‘up and coming’. I like the Great North Wood pub at the end of my road, which I credit with being part of the gentrification of Norwood. It’s a really nice gastropub and that’s my hang out at the moment. There are so many great restaurants and bars in Dulwich, The Bishop was my old favourite on Lordship Lane.  thelunacinema.com

WATCH Our guide to spending the day in Brixton, from food and shopping to culture and beauty

CULTURE

South London certainly has no shortage of galleries and artistic spaces to get lost in and one of the very best has to be Knight Webb. Established in 2012, the space brings together a cabal of international artists including Berlinborn Juliane Hundertmark, Brixton sculptor Lesley Hilling and New York’s Anders Knutsson. Currently showing at the gallery is the stunning work of Douglas McDougall that has to be seen to be believed. Nearby can be found Brixton East, a multi-functional space that serves not only as a gallery but also as a venue that can be hired out for any number of events. Formerly a warehouse, the interiors are gorgeous, a mix of exposed brick and beams, concrete floors and a giant clock face suspended from the rafters.

ome to The Ritzy, the Brixton Academy, excellent street art (don’t miss the Bowie mural) and the covered market, a day out in Brixton is always a treat. Here we round up a few places to go slightly off the beaten track for a day of alternative activities in the hub of South London.

FOOD AND DRINK

Brixton has long been a mecca for food and drink, offering fantastic Caribbean restaurants and all the treasures of the market. However, you can’t beat breakfast at Duck Egg Café. Located just off the market (and with a pop-up at The Prince of Wales too), this is much more than a greasy spoon – as you might guess, duck eggs are paramount. We recommend the delicious take on eggs Benedict to really get your morning into gear.

SHOPPING

Duck Egg Cafe

What started life as a silver jewellery stall on Brixton’s street market has blossomed into a full blown store that champions local makers and artists as well as cultivating artisanal products from around the world. Diverse Gifts is the only stop you need to make if you’re looking for something unusual for a friend’s birthday or something quirky for your home. You are guaranteed to stop in for ‘just five minutes’ and end up staying all afternoon.

ersonally, I have always loved a print with people in it. Figures of any kind on a summer dress are an immediate sell for me, though unfortunately they're quite rare. Flower prints, paisley, even birds, are everywhere. But it's not often that you find a blouse embellished with tiny surfers, ballerinas, tennis players or girls in bikinis. And this is neither a children's collection (as proven by the karma sutra print) nor is it too cute. French label G.Kero is sold internationally with a cult following and its cotton shirts and blouses, bomber jackets and sweatshirts come in prints that are unlike any others

SHAVATA Brows and Beauty in the City Wo r d s p e a r l b oy d

T

he City’s outpost of Shavata, Knightsbridge’s popular eyebrow expert, is located in House of Fraser next to Monument Station. It’s often busy, and although walk-ins are welcomed its a good idea to get an appointment. The Shavata idea – “brows are sisters, not twins” – express a philosophy that's immediately reassuring. Anyone who considers their non-identical eyebrows to be flawed will be cheered to discover that in brow lore, a lack of symmetry is not only to be expected, but actively celebrated. At Shavata, my neglected brows are threaded into nigh-twins without going against their grain. Swift, professional strokes and a gentle approach characterise the Shavata approach, which believes that eyebrows should relate to a face as a frame to an artwork, by complementing, not distracting from. With 25 years’ experience in the beauty industry, Shavata Singh is recognised as an authority on eyebrows and her studios can be found in branches of House of Fraser all over the UK. Having your brows tended to, she believes, is as effective as a mini-facelift. And it’s certainly true for me – a brief tint and reshape and my closely-related brows look well-defined while subtly improving my general appearance. Thank you, Shavata. ◆

good haircut can mean the difference between feeling on top of the world or at the bottom of the heap. Kieran Austen, franchisee of Rush Greenwich, knows this and has made it his mission to a level of quality hairdressing to Greenwich that is more usually found in areas like Chelsea using his seven years of experience. We caught up with him this month to find out what why he decided to move to Greenwich, his special skillset and his predictions for hot summer hair (here’s a hint: blondes are looking set to have a lot more fun.)

I WANT

TO provide a high LEVEL of CUSTOMER SERVICE specialised in it for the last six years. CH: Why did you pick Rush to move with? KA: Having been a former employee of Rush in Canterbury, I've never enjoyed hair as much as I did there. It is like being in a massive family with loads of support. CH: What is your hero product? KA: I'm in love with the Kerastase Chronologise shampoo and mask. It's a beautiful product.

CATHERINE HALES: What is special about Rush in Greenwich? KIERAN AUSTEN: With this salon, I really wanted to bring my Chelsea experience to the area. My aim with Rush Greenwich is to provide a very high level of customer service. CH: What inspired you to move to the Greenwich salon? KA: I love Greenwich. Even before the franchise, I was planning on buying a house here so it just felt right.

CH: What is your background? KA: I started hairdressing at the age of 15. I have since gained a lot of experience in the industry, working in various salons and perfecting my skills. For me, nothing can beat the feeling I get when someone is satisfied with their hair.

CH: Do you specialise in any particular aspect of hairdressing? KA: I'm a colourist and have

37 DUL_Aug16_Rush.indd 37

CH: What is your favourite colour/technique at the moment? KA: My favourite colour is a classic set of highlights – there’s nothing better. CH: Any tips for styling hair in summer? KA: Go for bright, clean blondes – I love them! 

BABUR Excellent Indian cuisine in the heart of Honor Oak Park Wo r d s r o s e n o e l

iving directions to Honor Oak Park's best Indian restaurant Babur is simple: look for the building with the large tiger on top. On arrival, our cocktails appear almost instantly - the new Tiki Rum Punch is a treat. Our server recommends the chef's tasting menu with wines from Babur's impressive cellar. This begins with Raj kachori chaat, a deconstructed dish of mini-dumplings, mango, pomegranate, chickpeas and sweet and sour yoghurt. Not only is this dish beautifully presented, it also tastes exquisite, crispy and creamy with bursts of freshness from the pomegranate. This is accompanied by a lovely dry Riesling. Next up come the flavoursome South Indian spiced prawns and the impossibly tender Afghani chicken tikka, both a culinary delight and swiftly followed by Hiran ki boti. These venison kebabs are so richly flavoured and perfectly cooked, they simply melt in the mouth. A robust Sicillian red rounds out the dish wonderfully. We follow this with the Methi chicken and the Parsee lamb rack; both are exceptional but the lamb absolutely steals the show. With very little space to spare, we attempt the restaurant's signature rice pudding with its crispy caramelised top and are glad we persevered. Excellent service and even better food. 

Pharmacy 2 Mark Hix and Damien Hirst team up for a sensory sensation in Lambeth Wo r d s c at h e r i n e h a l e s

ith sequels, there's always the risk that they won’t live up to the original. Pharmacy 2 is the second iteration of Damien Hirst's famous Notting Hill restaurant that opened in 1998. Kate Moss and David Bowie were regulars but by the time it closed in 2003, its star had somewhat faded. This time the artist has teamed up with chef Mark Hix and set up in Lambeth's Newport Street Gallery. The decor is everything you could hope for. Perspex shelves are filled with colourful pills and potions; bar stools are aspirin tablets in various shades of pastel leather and neon letters above the bar spell out "Prescriptions" in livid red. We almost expect the food itself to come in pill form. Thankfully this is where Hix takes over from Hirst.

We both choose the Isle of Wight tomatoes but while I opt for an absurdly creamy burratina and basil salad to go with them, he chooses an extravagant Dorset blue lobster and chorizo. For mains, my scallops and bacon arrive nestled in a bed of samphire and washed with Tonnix white port. The perfect balance of sweet and savoury, the plump scallops burst with flavour. My companion's buttermilk chicken and asparagus salad is scrumptious, if a little pedestrian. Puddings are served tapas-style and we choose four. The standout is the creme brûlée, while the award for most bizarre goes to the bittersweet absinthe jelly. I leave thinking that this may be The Godfather II of restaurants, the rare sequel that might just outdo its predecessor.  Newport Street, SE11; pharmacyrestaurant.com

Turkish Delight Honor Oak Park’s new eatery Hattush is taking the area by storm Wo r d s r o s e n o e l

T

his authentic Turkish Mediterranean restaurant takes its name from Hattusa, which was the capital of the Hittite Empire in the late Bronze Age. Its ruins lie near modern Bogazkale, Turkey, within the great loop of the Kızılırmak River. Before 2000 BC, a settlement of the apparently indigenous Hatti people was established on sites that had been occupied even earlier and referred to the site as Hattush. The Hattians built their initial settlement on the high ridge of Büyükkale. The owner, Sezar Ugur Soy and his wife Sefika converted a cramped and dark bar on Honor Oak Park into a stylish 70 seater eatery. The restaurant opens with breakfast at 9am and welcomes all diners from

YOU WILL experience A TRUE taste of ISTANBUL

intimate, two person dinners to large group gatherings – everyone is catered for, even the kids who are provided with crayons and colouring paper to keep them entertained. Sefika and Sezar have long dreamed of opening a family friendly restaurant where guests can come to unwind, have fun and experience a true taste of Istanbul. Sezar himself has had over nine years of running restaurants under his belt and has brought the full weight of his considerable expertise to bear in the opening of Hattush. In line with the name and the country and people it is derived from, the menu incorporates traditional dishes cooked over a charcoal fire ensuring an authentic and, most

45 DUL_Aug16_HATTUSH.indd 45

importantly, delicious flavour. As for why they chose Honor Oak Park as the place to open their restaurant? Sezar strongly believes that if a business plan is solid and has great foundations, a central London location is not necessary. In addition to pouring all his energy into making Hattush a success, Sezar is also an acclaimed singer with five albums under his belt as well as several music videos. Luckily for South East Londoners, you can catch him singing at the restaurant on Fridays and Saturdays from 8pm. The entertainment doesn’t stop here; guests will also be treated to bellydancing and music all night long. During the summer months, visitors to Hattush can enjoy the sunshine and make use of the outdoor seating or grab a table indoors and enjoy the unique ambience that Sezar and Sefika have sought to create. The combination of interior design, personality and truly exceptional food have made Hattush a firm community favourite with people coming from far and wide to eat, drink and be merry. A few celebrities have even been known to pop in to enjoy some of the quality Turkish fare. In short, if you want to spend an evening you won’t soon forget, stop in to Hattush – it’s like taking a trip to Istanbul without ever leaving South East London. 

TRAVEL / WANDERLUST

T

he mere mention of ‘familyfriendly hotels’ normally sends a small shiver down my spine. I fancy myself an intrepid traveller, a wild adventurer. Not for me the all-inclusive ease of a baby-friendly bolthole. Silly me – if only I’d known about Villa Pia I might avoided ten years of stressful, scratchy experiences with wailing toddlers on uncomfortable hot beaches. When I told a friend I was going to ‘some kiddie-friendly place’ in Umbria, she said: “You’re not going to Villa Pia are you?” in the sort of hushed reverential tones normally reserved for religious idolatry. This is the effect that the hotel has on in-the-know breeders. Its online testimonials heave with grateful parents proclaiming: “I actually had a holiday!” Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year,

heave with grateful parents saying ‘I ACTUALLY HAD A HOLIDAY’

Villa Pia has grown from small beginnings into a 25-room hotel in the hilltop village of Lippiano on the Tuscan/Umbrian border. The main building is a 15th century country manor house, flanked by two converted barns, located on a steep hillside directly below an 11th century castle. The views of farmland and rolling hills, cypress trees and hazy purple mountains go on forever. The house is as beautiful as you would imagine: cool, dark rooms, wrought iron railings, painted shutters and wisteria-covered

51 NH_Aug16_Travel_UMBRIA.indd 51

terraces. But there’s more to it than this. Many hotels look good but they don’t have the slavish following of Villa Pia. We met guests there who have been four, five, even eight times – their children growing up with annual trips to the hotel. From the moment we descended the drive into the main courtyard, we knew we had arrived somewhere quite different. It was like arriving at a brilliant house party that was already in full swing. Mums and dads were lolling in deckchairs while little ones took over the play equipment in the courtyard and crowds of older children dashed around playing imaginary games. The bell then rang for lunch and everyone helped themselves to a resplendent buffet before grabbing a seat and chatting to whoever was next to them. Our first experience was much like the rest of our week. Villa Pia has all the fancy trimmings of a five-star experience but none

THERE is

endless space for CHILDREN TO PLAY

in complete safety of the formality. This makes for a lovely atmosphere but the serious secret of Villa Pia’s success is that it is the very definition of ‘family friendly’. Morag and Kevin, who bought the property in 1997, raised their three children here. They understand the needs of children and, more importantly, their pie-eyed parents. Everything at Villa Pia has been developed to keep children happy and occupied, and give their parents a proper break. Children need space and Villa Pia has five acres of it. There is endless space for the kids to play freely in complete safety. The swimming pools are cut into the hillside; lying on a lounger there feels surreal. Someone cleverer than me described it as “like swimming in a picture, as if someone has imposed a Hockney on a Piero Della Francesco landscape painting.” The pool for the little ones is blood-warm and deep enough to be both safe and fun. Our five year-old barely left it all week. And just when you really want to be left alone to read, Villa Pia comes up trumps. It runs cooking and art classes for children, craftily timed for after lunch, so as that second glass of wine kicks in, your little darlings skip off to make pizza or cardboard guitars, leaving you with the blissful chance to snooze for a couple of hours in the sun. Then there is the glorious food for which Villa Pia is rightfully lauded. Meals are served by a small but prodigious army of ladies from the village in chef’s whites and cloche hats. Breakfast is a buffet, served in the converted barn. Lunch is a grand buffet spread – if you like lots of different, delicious

salads, from roast vegetables, to lentils, melanzane parmigano (every day!) and pasta in every conceivable form then you will understand why I still miss the Villa Pia lunches. Dinner is in two parts – the children are all fed together at 6pm on friendly fare such as cheesy pasta, sausage and chips, pizza. Parents reconvene at 8pm for drinks followed by a decadent four-course meal, with wines and coffee a plenty. If your baby monitor doesn’t reach the dining room Villa Pia will provide you with a babysitter so you can have a guilt-free grown-up evening. For some of the newer mothers we met, this was their first taste of freedom in months. And here we get to the crux of it. Villa Pia has guests returning again and again because it is the staff that make it. Paola, Aniko and Alessandro make each and every person feel like they are at home. Children’s names (and yours) are learnt in jiffy and the staff work quietly and constantly to make sure you feel at home. A note of caution: guests are governed by the school timetable

53 NH_Aug16_Travel_UMBRIA.indd 53

so during term time expect preschoolers. We were there in half term and the dominant age was six to nine. Our 12 year-old was slightly adrift – apparently the older children are there in July and August (along with 30c-plus temperatures). So plan accordingly. And if you are an anti-social sort, not given to pitching in and chatting, Villa Pia is not for you. If you do want to drag yourself away from the drinks room, there is loads to do in the surrounding area. This is Pierro Della Francesca country and his Madonna del Parto hangs in nearby Monterchi and his Legend of the True Cross – considered one of the Renaissance’s finest works – is in Arezzo. But unless your five year-old is alive to the charms of an early Renaissance master (ours most certainly wasn’t) I suggest you stay put at Villa Pia and do very little. The kids were brilliantly entertained which meant we could do what most exhausted parents really want on holiday… precisely nothing. I highly recommend it. 

 There is still availability at Villa Pia for September and October. Prices for adults from £550 per person per week; for children between the ages of 2 and 12 years, from £240 per week. MAKING SHAPES Revered textiles and rug designer Neisha Crosland can now add author to her résumé. Absolutely caught up with her W o r d s c at h e r i n e h a l e s Book photography Misha Anikst

CATHERINE HALES: What inspired you to write ‘Life of a Pattern’? NEISHA CROSLAND: I moved studio five years ago, and while clearing and sorting out my archives I noticed not only that there were many recurring themes in my work but that the sources of inspiration behind the designs also had interesting stories. I like to think of pattern as a link to the past; as with a good story, it gets passed down through the ages. I wanted the book to be a visual narrative in which, to quote Misha Anikst, the book’s designer and photographer, ‘the designs must leap out of the page and grab attention’. I wanted to create a book as a homage to all of the things that have influenced me. CH: Why did you decide to become a designer of textiles? NC: A missed turn in the V&A on my way to a lecture found me in the Ottoman galleries and I knew immediately that I wanted to do textiles. Despite their age, the bold, rich graphics on velvet and silk looked so utterly modern. CH: What is your design process? NC: I have a pin board where I pin all of my sources of inspiration – everything from a ribbon or postcard, to a photograph of a painting or ceramic, or

I WANTED TO create a book AS AN HOMAGE to all the things THAT HAVE INFLUENCED ME even just a doodle; seemingly random pictures of things that have caught my eye. I also write notes and pin them on the board. I then live with these inspirations until I get an urge to do something with them. I start to sketch some ideas roughly in a sketchbook and

I find that it really helps to give them names at this point. The ideas will join up with each other and evolve or just get edited out; it’s a survival of the fittest or best idea! When I’m confident that I’m on to something I’ll map it out life-size – not computer screen size – in black and white or pencil since it’s important to get the structure of a design correct before I start colouring it. CH: How would you define your style? NC: I’ve been told it’s quite deco. I try to make my designs as minimal as possible with maximum impact, a discipline that maybe comes from the pre-digital days when every colour in a design cost money. I think the way I design is also inspired by my admiration for Ottoman and Japanese design, and the abstract art of the Russian Avant-garde. ‘Minimum line with maximum impact’ is my mantra. CH: You often mention the V&A; is it your favourite spot in London? NC: Well, I owe the V&A my calling to textiles. I spent a lot of time there as a student, not only in the textile galleries but also among the ceramic collections and in the wrought iron metalwork galleries where I liked the black and white, positive/negative aspect of the metalwork.

matter how gorgeous the colours are. It’s also important to have an understanding of how the design will work on the end product since you can’t just plonk a pattern on something. You need to understand the medium and how the design will look, whether it’s upholstered onto a chair, decorating a fine china cup, flat on the floor for a rug, or draped around the neck in the form of a scarf.

Atlas By Neisha Crosland Pine Flower Nile Tiles

CH: Are there any patterns in nature that particularly influence your work? NC: I find inspiration in everything from the checks on fritillaries and the shape of giant gunnera leaves, to ferns, ginkgo leaves, shells, malachite and coral. The photographer Horst P. Horst’s book Patterns from Nature and Karl Blossfeldt’s Art Forms in Nature have inspired me too. CH: What makes a successful pattern or textile? NC: A well-balanced repeat, combined with a scale that works. Ideally the colouration should be a surprise too. Good drawing is essential otherwise the design will always be unattractive no

59 SW_Aug2016_NesihaCrosland.indd 59

CH: Are there any other designers you admire? NC: I admire a wide range of designers spanning different eras, from current designers such as Georgina Von Etzdorf and Marthe Armitage, to Phyllis Barron and Dorothy Larcher for their 1930s textiles, and the 18th century silk designers James Leman and Anna Maria Garthwaite. There are also so many designers who do wonderful things but remain anonymous. CH: Is there a particular place in the world that inspires your designs? NC: Many places inspire me but mostly from cultures long gone. For example, I take inspiration from everything from 16th century Japanese kimonos

ARTS & CULTURE / PROFILE and Mughal textiles and block prints, to Ottoman designs and Iznik pottery and ceramics in the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul. My influences also range from 18th century Spitalfield silks and Jacobean and Elizabethan blackwork, to Aztec and Inca feather pieces, African tribal art, 14th and 15th century Italian ecclesiastical textiles and early 20th century Russian revolution designs. The list goes on!

CH: What made you decide to add rugs to your collection? NC: The Rug Company approached me at a House & Garden fair about twelve years ago. I had designed an installation using my wallpaper on the floor under a sheet of perspex. Christopher Sharp, cofounder of The Rug Company, spotted it and asked me if I’d like to design rugs! Sea Thistle wallpaper, colour squid ink, Seven Park Place restaurant, St. James Hotel and Club, London, UK, Interior by Tony Filmer at Tully Filmer

CH: Are there any local haunts that you like to frequent? NC: I love Northcote Road for Dove the butcher, the fish stand, Hamish Johnston’s cheese shop and The Breadstall. Antica Bologna is perfect for lunch, The Birdhouse is a favourite for coffee and Chez Bruce is somewhere special for treat meals. CH: What do you like to do in your free time? NC: I love doing a lot of pottering in the garden and house, as well as visiting galleries, trips to the cinema and opera, cooking and seeing friends and family. Any chance to travel is welcome too! u Niall Clutton

CH: You speak very fondly of Camberwell College of Arts; was the school instrumental to your career? NC: Very much so. It taught me the process of getting a design from paper to cloth, the importance of drawing and of respecting the production process, whether it’s in a factory or by hand. That’s why I always like to stay close to the production process and to work with people who have the same approach, since a good design can so easily be ruined in the manufacturing. I find that it’s essential to have a say in how my designs are developed onto products – whether they’re rugs, tiles, wallpapers or fabrics – to ensure beautiful results.

CH: Did your stepfather Roald Dahl’s brilliant creativity feed into your own? NC: His love of the arts and the importance of inventing something to surprise people left a huge mark on me. He taught me that a different point of view is the only interesting point of view. My mother also instilled this in me, and she had a great eye for style and for the unusual. CH: How would you describe your Wandsworth house? NC: It’s an oasis that was once a working mews and a fly tip! We’ve made the garden the central focus, with french windows looking out onto it.

The outside lake was run down, but after spending £250,000 on it, it is now clean and makes a beautiful feature for future homeowners to enjoy. ESTAS

Absolutely backs top awards to find best agents in London bsolutely are once again sponsoring the London regions of the most prestigious awards in the UK residential property sector. The awards, known throughout the industry as ‘The ESTAS’ are extremely unique as shortlisted and winning agents are determined purely on ratings from customers when completing an online customer service survey after working with the agent. As well as estate and letting agents, there are also categories for mortgage brokers, conveyancers and homebuilders. The ESTAS not only give firms and businesses the chance to be recognised for their excellent service, but also provides valuable feedback enabling them to review their performance and improve in the future. The winners will be announced by the country’s favourite property expert Phil Spencer at the 14 the annual ESTAS ceremony next May. The awards will be held at the Grosvenor House in front of 1,000 of the UK’s top property professionals. u

I have worked in the property industry since the early nineties, so it’s fair to say that I’ve navigated the ups and downs of the market. I have predominantly worked in the South East, and always favoured Blackheath and Greenwich as I was born and bred in Blackheath. u

CULTURAL PROJECTS MANAGER Greenwich Peninsula

REBECCA NOONAN

A

rt and culture can transform a place Ω not just aesthetically, but also by encouraging people to engage in discussions that may challenge perceptions and inspire new ways of thinking. My work is rooted in contemporary art practice, commissioning projects that explore urbanisation and visual art across cultures. Before joining Greenwich Peninsula’s cultural team, I was part of the Victoria and Albert Museum’s Contemporary Programmes section, curating a variety of arts commissions. These included the architectural project ‘Seasons through the Looking Glass’ by CJ Lim and Studio 8 architects and a digital commission ‘Bit.Code’ by Julius Popp. I’m very interested in multiculturalism in urban areas Ω I devised and curated the Friday Late Dalston and Peckham takeovers for the V&A and MasterCard as well as engaging with their curatorial teams to incorporate Afro-Caribbean contemporary art into the V&A’s collections.

We have a responsibility to contribute to London's cultural identity

As a Greenwich resident for over 15 years, I jumped at the opportunity to be involved in shaping Greenwich Peninsula’s cultural identity. This regeneration project is huge, with 15,000 new homes, central London’s first major film studio and an eclectic design district all being built over the next 20 years. I believe inclusive art and culture is crucial to adding another creative dimension to this neighbourhood. Greenwich Peninsula is the largest regeneration in the capital and so we have a responsibility to contribute to London’s cultural identity. So from the start we’re embedding public art, holding exhibitions and offering a platform for progressive creative work to be realised.

As part of the curatorial team for the Peninsula, my work involves fostering creative partnerships and bringing in emerging artists and designers. Wherever we can, we introduce art and architectural interventions into public spaces, such as Conrad Shawcross’s Optic Cloak, the Colourblock Cranes by Morag Myerscough together with some great pieces of commissioned street art. This autumn, Now Gallery is hosting a new photographic show called Intimate Spaces, exploring the human stories of this diverse community. I get huge satisfaction in putting on events here – our Urban Village Fete started last spring, live jazz comes to the amphitheatre in the summer, and until September Something & Son are offering brick-making classes. The Peninsula is such a dynamic place and is constantly evolving. We have ambitious plans for the future, including fashion exhibitions, Farmopolis on the Jetty and a stunning 5km sculptural riverfront trail. I feel very privileged to be involved in creating such a uniquely modern part of London. u

NOEL IS SELLING HIS LITTLE VENICE OASIS

oel Gallagher recently dodged the chance to make up with his brother Liam by refusing to get together in Cannes to discuss new Oasis documentary, Supersonic, made by Asif Kapadia, who was behind the award-winning film about Amy Winehouse. The documentary will follow Oasis from their early days through to the release of iconic album Definitely, Maybe, and its film-makers recently called on fellow Mancunians to dig out any home movies of the boys in a school nativity play, which mum Peggy Gallagher fondly recalls. Since leaving the band in 2009, Noel has forged a successful path as a solo artist with new band High Flying Birds. The rocker, 48, ditched the drugs and wild parties to settle down with second wife Sara MacDonald, buying this endof- terrace house in London’s Little Venice in 2010. On the banks of Regent's Canal, he lives there with two sons, but is looking for £11.5m for it. The six bedroom home has a large kitchen and a separate dining room which leads directly out onto a private patio and garden. There’s also a separate mews house with a gym.  Knight Frank 0203 811 2141 www.knightfrank.co.uk

Diana has made some good career choices, and is evidently canny when it comes to property too; she’s just sold her four bedroom terraced house off the Fulham Road and made £2m on the deal; she bought it for £1.2m in 2003, renovated it and recently made £3.2m to spend on a move to smaller, top-floor mansion flat nearby. But she may be horrified to discover that, only weeks after she moved out, the builders have moved in and are tearing the place apart.  Sold for £1.2m

WHERE HARRY POTTER GREW UP

K Rowling asked her Twitter followers to keep the plot of her new play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child to themselves and allow future audiences to enjoy the plotline. The eighth Harry Potter story picks up 19 years after Lord Voldemort was vanquished. Former boy wizard Daniel Radcliffe isn’t in the new production – he’s been busy making movies. Big film roles have helped him grow a £60m fortune and a hefty property portfolio; he’s known to have at least three Big Apple apartments. Radcliffe grew up at this four bedroom house in Sherbrooke Road, and was reportedly in the bath when he found out he’d won the role of Harry. Despite having a cupboard under the stairs, with a price tag of £1.45m, this property is worlds away from the young wizard’s modest upbringing at 4 Privet Drive.  Chestertons 0207 384 9898 www.chestertons.com

WHERE JOAN WATCHED GRACIE SING

hen singer Gracie Fields turned up at the opening of this theatre in 1937 to cut the ribbon, she attracted a crowd of 10,000 fans. Gracie Fields was a top box-office draw and the highest paid actress in Britain. According to the Kentish Mercury, Fields – who went onto become a popular forces entertainer - described the new Greenwich Granada Theatre as “proper posh” and then said in a rich

Lancashire accent: “Well, I don’t suppose you want to hear me talking, you want to hear me sing. Shove a piano on the stage, lads!” Actress Joan Collins loved the Saturday morning pictures and, living nearby at the time, she recalled the opening night in 1937: “The whole Granada building was dark and I was sitting on my father’s shoulder... all of a sudden, all of the outside lights went on. Everybody cheered and screamed and clapped... and then Gracie Fields came and sang some of her popular songs. It was very special.” But it’s magic didn’t endure. The theatre closed during the late 1960s and was redeveloped into flats about a decade ago. This three bedroom, first floor apartment is on the market for £1.55m. Savills 0207 531 2500 www.savills.co.uk

he most famous restaurant with connections to the Rolling Stones is former bassist Bill Wyman’s Sticky Fingers in Kensington. But The Gas Works off the Kings Road is also a Stones favourite – famed for its starry client list but terrible food. During the 1970s and 80s the restaurant attracted everyone from gangsters to royalty and it was claimed that Princess Margaret used to have secret liaisons there with notorious Fulham gangster John Bindon. But The Gasworks has now gone and in its place are two newly-renovated flats. The first has two bedrooms and two bathrooms and is on the market for £1.35m, while the second also has two bedrooms with one bathroom and a west facing roof terrace, priced at £1.25m.  Savills 0207 731 9400 www.savills.co.uk
