he month of May has always been associated with festivities: May Day, the beginning of wedding season, Royal Ascot. This is perhaps because, in London at least, May is the first month when sitting outside doesn’t feel like a punishment. With this in mind we’ve decided to focus our beauty notes this month on pots and potions to best prepare a bride for her wedding day. See which new rose face cream is an absolute must on page 34. There are so many occasions to dress up for in May, giving your wardrobe a spring overhaul is a must. That’s why our fashion shoot this month focuses on spring/ summer essentials to shake off the winter blues and embrace the sunshine. Turn to page 27 to see

the Edie Parket clutch we can’t live without. Among the usual suspects (Chelsea Flower Show, the Cartier Queen’s Cup at Guards Polo Club) is a relative newcomer to the cultural landscape: London Craft Week. It may only be in its second year but it is already shaping up to be one of the best citywide events in the calendar. We choose our highlights on page 18. Our lead interview this month is with the enigmatic Carey Mulligan, who talks to us about keeping her life private and coming into her own as an actress. I hope you enjoy the issue. Ciao! ◆

issoni are one of Italy’s most globally recognised brands, with their distinctly colourful knitwear and daring statement pieces – but they came from humble beginnings before transforming into the powerful fashion house they are today. Ottavio and Rosita Missoni founded the company as newlyweds in 1953, in a small workshop in the basement of their first home in Gallarate. He was an ambitious pattern designer and she came from a family who ran a womenswear manufacturers. Together, with her wealth of knowledge and his artistic flair, they made the perfect pairing. Jump forward to today, and the fashion house is still very

much a family run business. After 40 years of making a name for themselves, control was transferred to their three children, and their signature style of colourful stripes and fashionforward knitwear is still very much present in current designs. In celebration of their longstanding and influential history in both fashion and art, the MA*GA Art Museum have organised an exciting exhibition in partnership with Woolmark, showcasing Missoni’s best fashion pieces of

the last sixty years alongside paintings by the leading 20th century European artists, highlighting the influence they had on the Italian designers. Artistic Director of the Missoni Archive, Luca Missoni, says: “It is a great opportunity to rediscover the potential of our colourful heritage to make a unique, positive experience”. Many of Missoni’s iconic knitted garments will be on display, showcasing the heritage and cultural history of the Missoni family’s association with wool. The artwork displayed alongside is from famous modernist artists such as Tancredi Parmeggiani, Sonia Delaunay, Lucio Fontana, and even Ottavio Missoni himself – the majority of which have never been exhibited in the UK. Celia Joicey, Director of the Fashion and Textile Museum, says: “This is the first major exhibition to explore the iconic Missoni fashion house. The mix between fashion and art is always exciting, and this show highlights the important dialogue between post-war Italian artists, designers and industry”.  MISSONI Art Colour, From 6 May Fashion and Textile Museum 83 Bermondsey Street, SE1; ftmlondon.org

elebrity couplings are wellpublicised affairs. From Posh and Becks to Brangelina, these millionaire marriages invite the media’s scrutiny as public and private lives become intertwined, often to the point where it’s difficult to discriminate between the two. For Carey Mulligan and her charttopping husband Marcus Mumford (of Mumford and Sons fame), the exact opposite is true: since marrying and starting a family together, the line between the public and the private has never been clearer. Mulligan has worked with a slew of celebrated directors including Steve McQueen, Baz Luhrmann and the Coen brothers, so she’s no stranger to the glitz and glamour of Hollywood. But away from the silver screen she has always been fiercely protective of her personal life – at times enigmatically passive; at others staunchly forthright in defence of her privacy. Mulligan’s breakthrough role came in 2009 as schoolgirl Jenny in Lone Sherfig’s

An Education. The character was similar in some ways to Mulligan herself (both excelled academically, for one thing) but the fame that came with the film’s success was, as Mulligan later told The Guardian, “all a bit terrifying”. Having confessed that she “doesn’t have a public persona”, the trials and tribulations of celebrity status, not to mention the ever-present paparazzi, were a constant “nightmare” for Mulligan. She struggled with photoshoots and award shows, once describing the Academy Awards as “overwhelming and glamourous and not really me at all” – and yet now, at the age of 30, it appears that this English rose is finally beginning to bloom. “I feel more sure of myself,” Mulligan says. “I was very reticent when I was younger but now I have greater confidence in my work and I’m much better at getting my view across when I’m speaking to directors. I used to be so shy that it made it difficult for me to enjoy whatever success I had, but now everything seems fabulous and promising… although there are still times

when I have to pinch myself to make sure that it’s not a dream!” Staying grounded as a Hollywood starlet is in itself a feat worthy of admiration. Both Mulligan and her husband have developed reputations based around their respective work, rather than any sense of tabloid scandal or over-inflated ego. Mulligan is of the opinion that “the minute you get to be like ‘look how famous I am’, you should give it up,” adding that as Mumford is “the only thing” that’s entirely hers, she does her best to keep their relationship “totally away” from the limelight. Family friend Sienna Miller has described Mulligan and Mumford’s marriage as “idyllic”. “They both come from very solid families and have a real sense of the life they want to live,” says Miller. “Marcus can headline Glastonbury and Carey can be nominated for however many Oscars, and then they come back to their farm and they’re in big woolly jumpers, raising piglets – it’s an amazing balance.” Mumford has been present in Mulligan’s life since they met at a church youth camp and became pen pals;

ARTS & CULTURE / PROFILE they reconnected in 2012 when they were both involved in the making of Inside Llewellyn Davis and were married in a matter of months. Mulligan told The Guardian that she feels “more settled and more secure than I’ve probably ever been” since getting hitched. For the girl who “had a great childhood” but “wasn’t ‘in the group’”, her marriage to Mumford has cemented her place within the upper echelons of British celebrity, regardless of whether that was her aim. Mulligan’s last cinematic outing was Suffragette, which she describes as a valuable opportunity to learn more about the history of feminism, a cause close to her heart. It was also a chance to work with “inspiring” fellow actors such as Meryl Streep. “It’s nothing new for me to admit that she’s my heroine,” says Mulligan. “It’s not just her incredible ability and talent; she also uses her position for notable causes.”

AWAY FROM THE SILVER SCREEN

she has always been FIERCELY, AND

at times enigmatically, PASSIVE

Mulligan, too, has philanthropic interests. In 2010 she donated the Vionnet gown she wore on the red carpet of that year’s BAFTA ceremony to Oxfam in order to raise money for a series of women’s projects. In 2012 she became an ambassador for the Alzheimer’s Society; her grandmother’s dementia is one of the few elements of her family life that Mulligan discusses with the media. Speaking at a society event, Mulligan said she was “committed to helping the Alzheimer’s Society in any way” she could. “My family and I rely on the help of organisations like Alzheimer’s Society to help us understand the disease and guide us in the care of my grandmother,” Mulligan explained, adding that she thought it was “a privilege to meet so many people with dementia”. More recently, the actor has become involved in helping the charity War Child,

and has been vocal about the struggles faced by children in both the Democratic Republic of Congo and Syria, whose lives have been affected by war. For Mulligan, seeing the suffering of children who were around the same age as her own baby daughter Evelyn had a profound effect on her. “I look at my daughter and think, this is so exciting: you could be a doctor or a lawyer or an engineer,” she told ITV News in 2015. “These parents in Syria, they had those same feelings, and now that’s gone.” Such public comments about Evelyn, born in September last year, are exceedingly rare. Despite widespread speculation from the media and fans, Mulligan is committed to staying tight-lipped, saying that when people ask her “all the time” about her daughter, she demurely replies “Oh, I can’t, I’m sorry,” in what she describes as “a very British way”.

17 C&A_MAY16_CAREY MULLIGAN.indd 17

For Mulligan, who has seemingly made a habit out of taking regular breaks from the rigours of film-making, last year’s pregnancy and birth while starring in two movies, Far From the Madding Crowd and Suffragette, and the stage show Skylight was, by her own admission, “pretty stressful”. “Doing press with a tiny baby means timing has been very important and babies do what they want, which is a challenge,” Mulligan told The Mirror. She did, however, have a secret weapon when it came to juggling her duties as a celebrity and a mother: “It’s really helpful when you have Meryl Streep backstage at events, shouting at people on your behalf and telling them to hurry up because you have a nursing mother here!”  To find out more about these charities visit l alzheimers.org.uk l warchild.org.uk

ondon Design Week, Fashion Week and events like Frieze Art Fair have long been part of the capital’s cultural landscape. It seems somewhat surprising therefore, that a Londonwide, five day festival celebrating makers and craftsmen should only be celebrating its second anniversary this year. Ranging from perfumers revealing how a world-class fragrance is developed to jewelers cutting and polishing diamonds, London Craft Week is an opportunity for anyone who has ever wondered what goes into producing a luxury product to get a glimpse behind the scenes. The show is not restricted to one area of London; venues as varied as Selfridges, Chelsea Physic Garden, Clerkenwell and the Royal Academy will all be taking part as well as several

ARTS & CULTURE / LONDON CRAFT WEEK Ever wondered what it takes to produce the fantastical costumes worn in TV series such as Game of Thrones or films like King Arthur? All will be revealed at Angel’s Costumers where visitors will get the opportunity to hear from the costume designers and jewellery makers who bring these mythical worlds to life. The unique tour of the legendary London costumers in Garrick Road will begin in the tailoring department where bespoke pieces are created for film, TV and theatre. Next up is the alterations section, where costumes are restored and altered to fit the specific requirements of the costume designer. The tour will then move to the cavernous Costume Warehouse, containing over eight miles of costume hanging rails with approximately one million individual items – sartorial heaven. In the City, award-winning engravers at Rebus in Hatton Garden (London’s famous jewellery quarter) will demonstrate how to produce the intricate

The world of cordwaining is not one that many are given the opportunity to explore, which is why the Sebastian Tarek Open Studio in Sunbury Workshops is not to be missed. The Australian-born, East London-based shoemaker has worked for the city’s finest shoemakers since 2003, creating work to satisfy the picky clientele of Savile Row and beyond. His talk will reveal the process of commissioning a pair of shoes from start to finish, using the very best materials and traditional techniques. The 18thgeneration shoe maker will also treat visitors to a demonstration in practical cordwaining. This is only a taste of what London Craft Week has to offer so, in the words of How To Spend It’s Charlotte Abrahams, ‘Whether your intention is to consume or simply converse, if you appreciate beauty and the value of craftsmanship, then London Craft Week is one of the month’s must-visit events.’ 

throughout the City and East London. Some of the highlights from the 70 events and the 350 makers taking part in year’s show include a behind-the-scenes gun factory tour at Holland and Holland on Harrow Road, NW10. Taking visitors on a journey through the many processes required to produce a quality firearm, the tour ends at the finishing ‘shops’ where bespoke sporting guns and rifles are made. The factory itself was built in 1898 and was designed so that the ‘actioners’ could use the morning light on one side of the building while engravers used the afternoon light.

eason after season, COS manages to capture the essential trends of the moment. Their Swimwear Collection for SS16 is no different. Combining earthy khakis, playful prints and interesting textures, the range includes elegant one pieces and bikinis to keep your poolside style on point for summer. Among our favourite pieces are the Melange Bikini top and bottoms which combine a sporty silhouette with a denim blue melange print and metallic D-Ring back detail. Of the onepieces, our standout is the crossover swimsuit. Functionality and style combine to create a swimming costume with comfortable close fit. It also has a low back and slim cross over straps that can also be detached and tied behind the neck and the pale blue panels and light pink straps summon up a stylish, summery palette that is both timeless and modish. However, it is their printed bikini [pictured above] that has really won us over. Featuring a soft-cup style, this bikini top is made from double-sided fabric with an all-over, colour-contrasting print. The matching bottoms are not overly skimpy and feature the same bold pink, white, khaki and black pattern as the top. Available at all COS Stores. u â—? COS Stores cosstores.com

iS CLINICAL Try the iS Clinical range with Dr Mayoni Wo r d s C AT H E R I N E H A L E S

T

his wonderful skincare range, iS Clinical, is created by Innovative Skincare and contains only the highest pharmaceutical grade botanical ingredients. It’s a celebrity favourite and it’s easy to see why. The products arrive in sleek shiny dark blue packaging and the brand is endorsed by the likes of Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Beyonce. Enough of the fluff though... does it actually work? I have to say that after reading their independently conducted clinical trials and hearing my clients’ feedback – it’s an overwhelming ‘yes!’ from Dr Mayoni. The range covers the four pillars of good skincare namely cleanse, treat, hydrate and protect. One really attractive feature is that every product within the range is multi-tasking. They create results across a multitude of areas, making the products a really cost-effective investment. I was also hugely impressed with their dedication to cancer skincare. Their range can be used by patients who are currently undergoing or post treatment. Their SHEALD balm is fab on surgical scars too. Their hero product is Active Serum which is great for acne, hyperpigmentation and wrinkles. It contains a hard-working mixture of kojic acid (from mushrooms), and extracts from willow bark and bilberry. iS Clinical works and this exceptional range gives hope to people with a variety of conditions like acne, hyperpigmentation, excema and rosacea while also targeting signs of ageing too. All from botanically derived products and responsibly created. What more could you want from a skincare product?  For more details about iS Clinical please contact Dr Mayoni on clinic@drmayoni.co.uk or 07956 517021; drmayoni.co.uk

Cherry blossom scents inspired by the Japanese tradition of Hanami W o r d s L aw r e n c e R o u l l i e r W h i t e

PHOTOGRAPHY BY POLLY ELTES

A

cross Japan from late January until May the nation is enraptured by the cherry blossoms that sweep in abundant waves over this mystical land. Hanami is the centuries old tradition of blossom viewing and picnicking beneath the laden boughs, this floral festival is a much anticipated social event. Looking in envy at the incredibly gorgeous vintage kimonos stocked by London-based specialist webstore Ona Kimono (OnaKimono.com) I was reminded just how evocative these Sakura, cherry blossoms, are. Understandably historically the cherry blossom is a centuries old recurring theme on kimonos of various techniques. Slightly more strangely however, as they bear little scent, recently these stunning blooms, and perhaps the beauty of the kimonos which depict them, have inspired and compelled perfumers to represent this overwhelming natural visual phenomenon in scent. West London based micro-perfumery 4160 Tuesday’s sensational Tokyo Spring Blossom [1] is a triumphant olfactory symphony to this springtime spectacle. 4160 Tuesdays’ Founder Sarah McCartney explains; “Tokyo Spring Blossom is the scent of a warm spring breeze blowing

through blossom. You’ll smell citrus top notes – pink grapefruit and tangerine - deep warm opoponax, tolu balsam, and raspberry jam at the base, rose, violet and woods at its heart, but all blended so smoothly that it’s hard to separate them.” Tokyo Bloom [2] is the sublime scent by The Different Company which sits beautifully between the very fashionable fresh green fragrances of the moment and the ultimately wearable modern florals. It opens with a rush galbanum, dandelion, basil and a touch of blackberry, followed by

37 DUL_May16_Perfume.indd 37

a middle of pretty jasmine and cyclamen petals on a base of gaiac wood, skin-like musk and amber. One of the gems in London’s olfactory crown is Angela Flanders [3], the wonderful perfumer who has two shops in Spitalfields and Columbia Road. Angela Flander’s Sakura is a subtle fragrance of cherry blossoms on the bough. Delicate floral top notes with hints of violets and heliotrope mingle with the intriguing almond notes in the heart, resting on a velvet base of soft green mosses. Sakura by Miya Shinma [4] is a light floral perfume that was designed by Miya to perfectly evoke the same sense of joy one experiences when faced with thrill of this springtime phenomenon. The scent opens with sparkling citrus and elegant rose essence on a heart of peonies, rose absolute and blackcurrant. The innocent notes dry down to something altogether more sensual and carnal and we remember spring is the start of something new. As the Maytime Hanafubuki – Cherry Blossom Blizzard – fills the air with floating petals we remember the Sakura is more than just about beauty they are about renewal and a new beginning, little wonder then they appear on so many kimonos.

ABSOLUTELY / PROMOTION up to 12 months so your skin will keep on improving with results lasting up to five years. Is the procedure painful? Most of our patients just feel a tingling sensation, with no real pain. Who is the ideal candidate for NovaLift? The procedure is suitable for both men and women who have started to see a change in the elasticity and firmness of their skin, but want a non-surgical approach to rejuvenation with natural-looking results. In clinical trials 90% of patients saw visible lifting as a result of the ultrasound. Is the NovaLift a replacement for a surgical facelift? Although the results will not be as dramatic as with a surgical facelift, it’s pain-free, gives immediate results so patients leave looking radiant and rejuvenated, and because there’s no downtime no-one will know you’ve had anything done. Plus the effects get better and better with time – it’s like turning back the clock on ageing!

SAVING FACE

The ultimate technology in non-surgical facelifts exclusively at Nova MediSpa, Greenwich

N

ovaLift is the revolutionary no surgery facelift that gives instant results. It’s a totally non-invasive alternative to surgical treatment and uses the latest state-of-theart technology to achieve incredible results – instantly. We visited Nova MediSpa to meet the well known Dr. Karen Orempuller leading practitioner.

Can you really get a facelift with no surgery? Yes, the NovaLift really does work and the results are amazing and virtually immediate, with no downtime following the treatment. You can pop into our clinic, then go straight back to work, or lunch or shopping! So, what is NovaLift? NovaLift uses the latest technology in High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) to lift,

firm and tone. The procedure has been tried, tested and constantly evolved and improved to the state-of-the-art system we have at the Nova Clinic. It has thousands of successful clinical treatments to prove both its safety and its effectiveness. How does the HIFU work? During the procedure focused, high intensity ultrasound energy stimulates the deep structural support layers of the skin, including those typically addressed in a surgical facelift. Crucially, however, the surface of the skin is not disturbed at all. The ultrasound energy stimulates the growth of new collagen, to gradually strengthen, lift and tone skin from within. Results are usually immediate and the skin may appear tighter and firmer right away. But the great part is that once stimulated the treated areas will continue to produce fresh collagen for anything

BEL-AIR Feel good fast food delivered to your doorstep Wo r d s c at h e r i n e h a l e s

ringing a slice of sunny California to London, Bel-Air specialises in healthy fast food. Since opening in 2015 they have become known for their substantial salads which are packed full of lean proteins and every type of veg imaginable. The boxes come in three different sizes and can be customised depending on individual tastes. Their spring menu, which launched in April, makes for a fantastic lunch option and can be ordered to your office or home using Deliveroo. The tarragon yogurt chicken and crushed purple new potatoes with almond pesto are creamy and tender. The chilies in the pesto give the whole dish a nice kick. My big salad box is a combination of Za’atar cauliflower with freekeh, spinach, mint, fresh pomegranate and roast courgette as well as honey, nigella and goat’s curd dressing, spring herb crumb and salmon with green harissa. Though all delicious, the stars of the show are the cauliflower (flavourful with just the right amount of crunch) and the salmon (flaky and tangy). This is all topped off with a delightfully chewy cacao and peanut butter cookie. Perfection. ◆

ermondsey Street is one of my favourite places in London. Tucked away from the main drag of Tower Bridge, it’s a quaint little road lined with miss-matched formerfactories. Here, in among these industrial buildings, you’ll find Village East of Bermondsey. Owned by the same team behind the Riding House Cafe in Fitzrovia, the cool vibe here is carefully curated with great design Ω diners sit in intimate little booths or at the bar Ω and lovably cheeky waiters. We went on a Wednesday night and the entire place was buzzing. Starting things off with a cocktail, my friend ordered the refreshing Southside Sling (gin, coriander syrup, lemon and pomegranate) while I chose the very heady Smoker’s Delight (tequila, whisky, sherry, chestnut liqueur and orange bitters). A word

of warning, don’t order the latter if you can’t handle your booze, it’s seriously strong Nibbling on freshly baked caramelised onion bread and truffled egg mayo, we ordered the beef carpaccio to start. Rare rather than raw, the tender beef arrived topped with a creamy and crunchy coleslaw. Next up, the 16 oz. chateaubriand served with chips, smashed potatoes, slow-roasted tomato, field mushrooms, garlic butter and peppercorn sauce. While the meat was thick, rich and delicious, the sides really stand out in my mind. Our favourite, the mash, came topped with crispy chicken crackling and gravy. Indulgent but definitely worth it. This is definitely a restaurant to have on your rota – it will always impress. ◆

he Japanese rely on miso for the taste sensation of umami it adds to dishes, and I have been cooking with this fermented salty and sweet paste for almost 40 years and find it indispensible in my pantry. The one I use most often is a pale golden type called shiromiso (white miso – although it’s generally not white at all), which is made from rice, barley and soya beans. Some types of miso – and there are hundreds – contain wheat, so if you are gluten intolerant, read the label. If you can’t get Medjool dates (which are gorgeously toffee-like and plump), then use dried dates, which you’ll need to slice and soak in warm water for five minutes to plump up before draining.

aw fish salads have been part of my family’s culinary repertoire back in New Zealand for as long as I can remember. Even my stepmum, Rose, a Cockney from London’s East End, got into the swing of things when she and Dad married. Whether it be a Peruvian ceviche or Cook Island’s Ika Mata, or even a jumble of Japanese sashimi, raw fish is delish! Pretty much any fish, so long as it’s very fresh, will work here. The smaller the chunks of fish, or the thinner it’s sliced, the less time it’ll take to marinate. If your limes are very firm, you can get the most juice from them by rolling them firmly on their sides along your worktop for 10 seconds, which helps to crush the cell walls inside the flesh. Alternatively, as odd as this may seem, zap them for 15 seconds in the microwave and then leave to cool.

Ingredients • 350g (12oz.) very fresh tuna loin, skin and bones removed • 3 tbsp lime juice (or use lemon juice) • 1 small red onion, halved and very thinly sliced • ½ tsp finely grated lime zest • ½ medium-heat red chilli, finely chopped • 1 tsp grated palm sugar or light brown sugar • 1 ripe, sweet mango • 100ml (scant ½ cup) coconut milk • 8 stalks coriander, leaves picked • 1 spring onion, thinly sliced

• 1 crisp, sweet apple • 2 tbsp desiccated (shredded) coconut, toasted

coriander and spring onion. Cover and leave for 5 minutes in the fridge.

MethoD 1 Cut the fish into cubes about 1½ –2cm (¾ in.) square. Mix with half the lime juice and ¼ teaspoon of flaky salt, then cover and leave in the fridge for 30 minutes.

5 Cut the apple (unpeeled) into juliennes and toss with the toasted coconut.

2 Briefly rinse the sliced onion under cold water, then mix with the lime zest, chilli, palm sugar and remaining lime juice. Cover and place in the fridge until the fish is ready.

Peel the skin from one half of the mango and cut off the cheek (you’ll need only one cheek). Thinly slice the flesh. 3

4 Drain the juices from the fish. Toss gently with the onion mixture, coconut milk, mango,

6 To serve, give the fish another gentle mix and taste for seasoning, adding extra salt if needed. Divide among your bowls or plates and sprinkle the apple and coconut on top. ◆

hile Hollywood basks in all the fame and glamour of its motion picture heritage, Downtown LA is slowly but surely poised to snatch the limelight as it goes through a renaissance. Of the many districts that make up the Downtown area, the Historic Row played a significant role in the early 1900s, when Broadway was a buzzing mecca for entertainment. Post WWII, new opportunities lured businesses and residents into the suburban sprawl around West Hollywood, leaving this corner of Downtown and surrounding enclaves to succumb to urban decay. But that’s about to change, as maverick entrepreneurs and a community of local artists and denizens breath new life into its empty streets and spaces. Already, hip Angelenos and visitors are gravitating towards the offbeat Historic and Arts districts, invigorated by a burgeoning cultural scene, revival of architectural gems, luxury property development, and a spate of trendy eateries and retail hotspots. The hotel played host to numerous VIPs, most notably The Beatles, during their first US tour back in 1964, and also featured in countless films and TV series. Back in the 70s and 80s, artists who could no longer afford rising rents in Venice Beach and Hollywood moved into an enclave close to the Los Angeles River, where abandoned warehouses, factories and derelict rail depots provided shelter and studio-cumgallery space. This bold move and the growing underground arts community that followed led to the area being officially designated in the mid-90s as the Arts District. Since then, building façades have

Though still rough at the edges, this former industrial wasteland has not deterred a spate of trendy eateries and assorted enterprises from staking their claim. Its gritty backdrop and randomness are what give the place its eclectic edge. There are big plans for the Arts District, and deals are being inked to develop commercial projects and hotels, including a Soho House members’ club, Soho Warehouse. Back at the Historic District, every second Thursday of each month, art enthusiasts descend upon Spring and Main streets, between 2nd and 9th streets to take part in the Downtown Art Walk (downtownartwalk.org), a free event that celebrates local artists and businesses. Those who wish to explore public art in more detail join the Historic Core Mural Tour, a guided walk around the district’s back-doubles. quickly and efficiently. Guests were also provided with an insight into how the injury clinic will benefit local clubs, teams and the local community. The clinic is not just for sporting professionals – it also aims to help anyone who has an injury and could benefit from treatment. As well as learning about the sports clinic and meeting the team, guests were also given the chance to win a signed England football shirt. The winner was presented with the signed shirt by rugby legend John Gallagher. t is 35 years since David Mckee’s enchanting Not Now, Bernard was first published, and it has recently appeared again in a special anniversary edition in time to win over a new generation of fans. The story tells of a small boy whose parents are so busy they put him off with the words that form the book’s title. A monster eats Bernard or it may be matter of transformation, but the creature finds it no less difficult gaining mum and dad’s attention and climbs the stairs to bed holding his teddy-bear. ◆

KIDS & EDUCATION / SCHOOL TALK

The play’s the thing Traditionally viewed as a ‘soft’ subject, drama can have all sorts of benefits for children Wo r d s A M a n d a C o n s ta n c e

W

hat are the benefits of drama in education? With its place on the curriculum threatened by the EBACC and changes to GCSEs and A-Levels, does drama matter? “It’s is a way for children to still be children,” says Maharati, a drama teacher, “especially today where there is so much expectation and pressure to achieve… For children to have a safe space to play and try stuff out is invaluable.” Pippa Aston-Browne and Maharati run Applause for Children, a drama holiday club for children aged 4-11. Both have a background in the performing arts and set up Applause! in 2009. They now run drama camps at Lion House School in Putney and in St Helen’s Church Hall in North Kensington. During term time Pippa is a full-time drama teacher and Maharati runs Applause for Schools, which trains and mentors drama teachers for state and private schools, including Maple Walk, Mulberry House and Faraday School. A mother of two girls who have attended the Kensington drama camp says: “My kids are never happier than after a day with their heroines Maharati and Pippa. They still quote and sing from all their past performances.” Maharati says that all children, whether shy or boisterous, gain confidence through drama. “You might have a class clown or a diva looking for attention, but they will have to share the limelight and learn to work in an ensemble – and at the other end of the spectrum you get kids who can barely speak to an adult but who learn how to

IT MIGHT look like playing BUT IT’S WITHIN strict PARAMETERS become more confident through drama.” Children are also treated as individuals at a drama club like Applause!, which can work wonders for even those labeled ‘difficult’. “Kids with behavioural problems just don’t have them in drama,” says Maharati. “They are not stuck behind a desk and they are listened to.” The discipline of the drama class is not the static structured regime of school, which young boys, in particular, can struggle with. “Drama lets you run around and blow off steam.” When the children arrive every morning, the teacher runs through a series of mental and physical exercises to warm them up. It’s very focused work, says Maharati. “It might look like playing but it’s within strict parameters,” she says. The clubs are run on a weekly basis, Monday to Friday, and each week

73 CHIS_Mayl16_Education.indd 73

culminates in a performance. There are no set scripts, allowing the teacher to adapt roles to the ability or needs of each child. “It’s a totally different way of learning,” says Maharati. “Children have to think on their feet – if a child is struggling with a line I can change it – and if they are West End material and want to do a monologue, there’s space for that, too. To get a play to start on Monday and finish by Friday requires a lot of discipline,” says Maharati, a fact often underappreciated by observers. Phil King, head of drama at Bedales, agrees, and says participating in ensemble productions at school is good preparation for the working world. “A theatre production is a management project; management projects in the workplace require bringing people together quickly and enthusiastically, and the teamwork and leadership engendered in drama work are suited to this.” King says the confidence a child gains through drama can spill over into their other academic work. “I can think of many students about whom teachers in other subjects have expressed concerns that they don’t contribute in class, who then learn through drama that they can say their piece.” Maharati remembers Fiona, a shy girl from Mulberry House. “On her first day, she was a little out of her depth and a bit emotional,” says Maharati. “We took every opportunity to praise her, to allow her to speak up. Every day I gave her a bit more to say; in the end she was loud and confident. Her mother was in tears and she was so proud of herself. I know that that experience will stay with her.”  applauseforchildren.com

THINGS LANDLORDS SHOULD LOOK FOR IN AN INVESTMENT PROPERTY ith high tenant demand, buying to let has never been so popular, providing investors with an opportunity to enjoy extra income. Allison Thompson, managing director at Leaders, has identified five factors every landlord should look for before buying to let.

W

01 LOCAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES Tenants will be attracted to homes close to or with easy access to their work.

02 EXCELLENT TRANSPORT LINKS

Proximity to a rail station or the motorway network will make a home more appealing to people who need to travel.

03 QUALITY OF HOUSING

With tenants staying in one place for longer, they typically look for quality properties that can be a home to be proud of.

04 ATTRACTIVE LOCAL AMENITIES

Areas with plenty to offer will naturally appeal to tenants. Look for homes that are close to shops, pubs, restaurants, schools and entertainment facilities.

05 MEETING LOCAL DEMAND

Working out who you are aiming to let to and buying a property to suit is a must. u

For more information and advice on buying to let, contact your local Leaders branch or visit leaders.co.uk.

MIRRORED SPLASHBACK • An innovative way of brightening the kitchen area, reflecting light back into the room and providing a sense of extra space, while also being a stylish feature that works well with a crisp decorative palette. GLASS BALUSTRADES • Glass balustrades provide a desirable extension effect to a roof terrace, giving off an impression that the space available is larger than it would be with a standard opaque fence. They also take away the disadvantage of obstructed views or extensive shadows, providing the opportunity to enjoy the sights and the sunlight to its full extent.

outh London born and bred, I was overjoyed when Natalie and I were given the opportunity to launch our Catford branch in January. Originally from Streatham, I’m enjoying getting to know Catford and all it has to offer. I got into property because it appealed to me on a variety of levels. Firstly, it was working with a whole range of characters, and as a people person, I love engaging with people from a range of backgrounds. Secondly, having studied law at university, I could enter into estate agency with the legal know how and offer vendors a comprehensive service. Finally, while studying at university I worked part time in a sales role and quickly discovered that I had a natural aptitude for it. When it came to deciding what I wanted to do in my career, I decided to combine these three strengths and made the move into property. There’s so much I love about the area; the diversity, the style and the ease of travel. There is a lovely mix of people in Catford, with older people who have lived here

They're lured by the green areas of Mountsfield Park and Ladywell Fields

for decades and families making the most of the schools and space. Increasingly, we are seeing first time buyers moving into SE6, keen to invest in the selection of period properties that offer good value for money. The market here is thriving and, in comparison with other neighbourhoods in London, properties are very competitively priced. However, they are slowly increasing as more people discover the many delights that Catford has to offer.

I

grew up in Streatham and, before our Catford branch was launched, worked in KFH’s Tooting branch, so I jumped at the chance to get to know south east London better. At university I studied

sociology and worked part time at a high end retailer, which was a very sales driven environment. After graduating, I worked as a property manager and, as I thoroughly enjoyed that, decided to enter the world of lettings. The market is growing in SE6. We’re seeing more professionals and young families moving into the area who are keen to put down roots before everybody else catches on. They’re lured by the green areas of Mountsfield Park and Ladywell Fields, the excellent schools such as Greenvale School and St Dunstan’s College, and the mix of property available. Since opening our doors in January, I’ve enjoyed getting to know the area. I am a big fan of the restaurants in Catford, which offer a great selection of cultural dishes. My favourites include the Japanese restaurant Sapporo Ichiban, Mekahn, a Turkish and Mediterranean restaurant, and La Pizzeria Italiana. Catford is the latest ‘up and coming area’, and with a multitude of redevelopment schemes being planned by Lewisham council, it is set to thrive. In no time at all, Catford will become one of the most desirable areas to live in south east London. My advice is to get in quick. ◆

IT’S A PROPER PUKKA PAD

ou might enjoy trying out Jamie Oliver’s recipes but how about sliding down the same spiral staircase as the young cheeky chappie in his first TV show? The Naked Chef saw Oliver rustling something up in the kitchen of this trendy three bedroom home. Oliver, who’s now equally famous for campaigning to introduce a sugar tax and tackle childhood obesity, admitted wife Jools “didn’t exist” in series one. The father-of-four, then 22, said the former model was kept away in the bedroom as TV execs wanted to suggest he was single. His original pad, in Clerkenwell, is on the market for £2.75m and it’s still got the spiral staircase although the kitchen has been refurbished since appearing in the 1999 cookery show. There’s a gym on the ground floor, as well as a garage, storage room, built-in study and utility room. The master bedroom boasts a dressing room and en-suite. Another double bedroom has an en-suite shower room, while the agent says a new mezzanine could be used as an extra bedroom or reception. u Savills 020 7578 6200; savills.com

UK music history. Tennant, 61, might hardly be a sex symbol but he’s admitted having had stalkers hanging around outside his house. He owned this five bedroom house in Fulham in the 1980s and 1990s, where he was responsible for installing fancy stained-glass windows and cornicing on the upper floors. Set over five floors - including a cellar - with a double reception room leading onto a kitchen, dining room and second family room. It's got a large garden as well as a third floor roof terrace, and has a £3.4m price tag. u Chestertons 020 7731 4448; chestertons.com

So even if you don’t shop at the store, you can now live in its former warehouse LIVE IN A FORMER HARRODS STORE

arrods was once famous for selling any animal its customers desired including elephants and lions. Back in its glory days, when customers ordered furniture that couldn’t fit into the shop, they were stored in its depository in Barnes. The building also had personal storage space for clients needing somewhere to keep their belongings while they were abroad. After several decades of neglect, the Grade II listed building was converted into more than 200 flats known as Harrods Village, so even if you don’t shop at the store, you can now live in its former warehouse. This three bedroom apartment – yours for £2.75m - has original features such as full height green curved windows with matching shutters. The gated development has communal gardens, along with a swimming pool and gym. u Harrods Estates 020 7225 6506; harrodsestates.com

It’s a far cry from her years spent on the London party scene, which culminated in a £400-a-day cocaine habit and plastic surgery to rebuild her nose. At the end of last year Palmer-Tomkinson was photographed looking gaunt in a hoody and tracksuit, but has recently announced she’s trying her hand at clothes designing.

adness set their 1982 top ten hit Our House in this Victorian terraced house, where Suggs and co bashed out the tune in the living room. A few months ago the house, which took the video’s starring role, went on the market and was snapped up for £565,000. It’s on a tree lined cul-de-sac in North West London which has long been in demand with film directors. Stephenson Street features in The Ipcress Files and the Likely Lads and appears in Hugh Jackman’s new film Eddie the Eagle. Recently decorated with a modern kitchen/diner and large open plan reception room, it overlooks woodland where a community urban orchard and garden is planned for the spring. Closer to home there’s a little oasis in the back garden which was designed by TV presenter and Chelsea Flower Show gold medal winner Joe Swift. u emoov 0333 121 4950 emoov.co.uk
