t’s finally time to ditch floaty dresses for cozy jumpers, sandals for boots and beautiful bare legs for warm woollen tights. And secretly, I’m glad. Don’t misunderstand, I love a warm summer’s day spent sprawled in Dulwich Park as much as the next Londoner but there’s something comforting about waking up on a crisp cold morning and donning your winter coat (or even, perhaps buying a new one?). With this in mind, we have found our new favourite fashion boutique; turn to page 31 to find out more about mac&miller. owned by exstylist Katie Greengrass. This month’s culture section features an interview with the fascinating Dominic West. Despite achieving great fame at the beginning of the television renaissance with his star turn in The Wire, West still lives with his family in a cozy house in London, eschewing glamour for home comforts. Find out about his two latest (and vastly different) projects, Finding Dory and The Affair on page 16. We also have a celebration of all things sixties on page 12 as the V&A unveils their exhibition ‘You Say You Want a Revolution? Records and Rebels 1966-70.’ I hope you enjoy the issue! ◆

In creating the exhibition, the V&A has worked in partnership with iconic clothing brand Levi's. Since their invention by Levi Strauss & Co. in 1873, jeans have become one of the most recognisable items of clothing in the world. The brand's association with individuality and rebellion makes it the perfect partner. Director of the V&A, Martin Roth, said of the partnership: “The brand, which has such resonance with many of the cultural and social changes taking place during the period covered by the exhibition, is a very fitting sponsor”. The exhibition opens with a recreation of Carnaby Street and focuses on the revolution in youth identity in 1966. The thriving fashion scene and rise of influential figures like Twiggy and Mick Jagger led companies to aim their designs towards the younger generation. Prepare to experience the late 60s in their finest moments, as the revolutionary era that rocked the world. u The second section focuses on clubs and counterculture and explores themes of experimentation and alternative lifestyles. Drugs, psychedelia and pirate radio exhibits surround the central installation, an evocation of London’s notorious UFO club. Politics is the focus of the third section, with the spotlight placed on the dramatic demonstrations in Paris during the 1968 student riots and the anti-Vietnam movement. Newsreel footage and protest propaganda are used to vividly portray the wide-spread reach of youth solidarity. This exhibition environment is followed by a section on consumerism, which boomed during the late 60s following the arrival of the credit card. Here visitors

t would appear that Dominic West has mellowed somewhat since his days playing blue- collar Baltimore cop Jimmy McNulty in hit HBO drama The Wire. Having garnered quite the reputation as a ladies’ man, the ruggedly handsome actor has shed his lothario image and is now very much settled down with his wife, landscape gardener Catherine Fitzgerald and their three children, Dora, 10, Senan, 8, and Francis, 7. The family lives in a threestorey 19th century house in Shepherds Bush, which the couple converted from flats back into a singular family home and filled with art and ornaments, books and trinkets from their travels and bright textiles, creating an air of sophisticated bohemia.
With Ruth Wilson in The Affair
Having embraced his role as a handson family man, West was understandably delighted when he got the call asking him to voice a lazy sea lion in Finding Dory, the follow up to Disney Pixar’s animated monster-hit Finding Nemo and admits that a huge part of taking the role was to impress his children, who reacted gleefully: “Jaws, floor, game over. Yeah, I've been dining off this for a long time, bragging about it to all the other parents for two years. They all hate me,” jokes the actor. The film is set one year after the 2003 original and finds our finned friends – Nemo, his father Marlin and of course, Dory (voiced by Ellen DeGeneres) - living peacefully in the reef. One day, amnesiac Dory has a flashback from her childhood and decides to track down her parents who lived at the Jewel of Morro Bay in
17 Chis_Oct16_Dominic_West.indd 17
California, leading the trio on another madcap adventure where they encounter dangerous giant squids, a seven legged octopus and a confused beluga whale who is unable to echolocate. West plays Rudder, one of two cockney sea lions who are tasked with helping our aquatic heroes, alongside none other than his Wire co-star Idris Elba, who plays Fluke. It is the first time the pair have worked together since their days as nemeses on the mean streets of Baltimore, resulting in plenty of playful banter and improvisation in the recording studio. Elba said all he needed to hear was 'sea lion, Dory, Dominic West,' and he was sold, with West agreeing it was a ‘no-brainer’. “I hadn't seen Idris for a long time and the idea of us being in a scene together was great because we actually didn't share too many scenes together in The Wire. We were more antagonists, always plotting, so that was nice – and I was very keen to see him again.” It was actually Dory’s voice star, Ellen DeGeneres, who helped the sequel come about, having campaigned tirelessly since the original. She has said that this is a film that the world needs right now; that Dory’s positivity is something we can harness to guide us through these difficult times. West, having confessed to feeling a ‘sadness’ and ‘change in the air in London’ since the Brexit vote, wholeheartedly agrees: “I woke up the other day and thought, 'Oh great, I'm going to see Finding Dory for the first time with my kids and I couldn't be more excited.' It's the perfect kind of film to get you out of whatever blues you're going through.” Many people think of West as the stereotypical Old Etonian, but the 46-yearold was actually born in Sheffield and is one of seven siblings in a close-knit Catholic family. His father owned a plastic

factory and its success afforded his son’s illustrious education. Recently, West told the Radio Times that being sent to Eton was ‘the worst feeling’ he’d ever had, even comparing it to the grief he felt when his parents died. He does however credit the experience with helping him become the great actor he is today, saying: “I learned to bury the emotional effects of that and then I went to drama school and had to dig it all up again." But academic credentials don’t always lead to instant success and West’s career has been hard won. After graduating from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 1995 there were seven years of bit-parts in films (he played a palace Guard in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace) and small TV roles before landing the job that changed his life in The Wire. Critics and viewers alike were blown away by the gritty and multi-faceted drama which highlighted the many ramifications of the illegal drug trade in America, and were wowed by West and Elba, who played arrogant detective McNulty and drug kingpin Stringer Bell respectively, finding their accents and swagger to be so convincing that people found it hard to believe that the pair were from the UK and not born and bred in Baltimore.
in Showtime drama The Affair, which will air its third series in November. Exploring the emotional effects and fallout of an extramarital relationship between Solloway and Alison Lockhart (Ruth Wilson) after they meet in the resort town of Montauk in Long Island, the show has proved to be emotional, steamy and immensely popular, earning West a certain breed of fan. “I'm getting recognized a lot more, little side-glances. And it's happening in the strangest places. I went to a football camp with my sons during the summer and kept getting all these looks from the mums. You know those, trying to catch your eye and holding
it a little too long. And you have an idea what they're thinking,” he says with a laugh. For his wife this perhaps, isn’t so entertaining, especially after West was reported as saying that Fitzgerald hadn’t watched the show, something he is quick to deny. “Rubbish, I said that as a joke. She's seen it, dips in and out, it's just my job to her, she not irrational like that. Will she watch it all? Of course not, she's a very busy woman with a lot on her plate.” And when pressed on whether she had been on set during one of ‘those scenes’ he quips back with a chortle: “I love that, 'those scenes’. I don't even want to be there during those scenes!” u
I hadn't seen IDRIS IN A LONG TIME and the idea of us being IN A SCENE TOGETHER WAS GREAT
The enormous success of the show not only made the actor an overnight A-lister but also a household heartthrob, and West, who was dating aristocrat Polly Astor (the mother of his eldest child, Martha, now 18), is the first to admit that he got caught up in hyperbole of fame and wanted to play the field a bit longer. He has since expressed regret for his playboy behaviour and is much changed after marrying his former college sweetheart, Fitzgerald. In the last few years he has terrified audiences with his eerily accurate portrayal of serial killer Fred West in Appropriate Adult; been nominated for a Golden Globe in stunning period drama The Hour; and played the legendary Hemingway in recent film Genius. However, his most revered role of late has been as suave adulterer Noah Solloway

ringing is having a moment. In the world of Athena Procopiou, fringing is always having a moment. The Greek designer's inspirations are entirely rooted in the 1970s, with an aesthetic that takes in Janis Joplin, Stevie Nicks and Jimi Hendrix. The ambient and distinctive smell as you walk in comes courtesy of Soho House beauty brand Cowshed of which stylist and owner Katie Greengrass, is the only stockist south east of the river. A superlative blowdry in the heart of the City Wo r d s a n d r e a c h e o n g
A
well carried out blow dry is a no-brainer. Especially it only takes an hour and lasts half a week, even surviving a visit to the gym. And who better to entrust your precious locks to than Mustafa Arslan, the man responsible for the impeccably coiffed hair of supermodels Alessandra Ambrosio and Linda Evangelista at the amfAR Gala? A visit to his salon Studio M.A. is refreshingly different to that of the usual celebrity hairdresser. This is a minimalist, tasteful gem in the towering professional hub of Blackfriars. You won’t see much fake tan and extensions here; it’s a retreat perfect for the office crowd to unwind and refocus with a manicure or blow dry. As someone who suffers from chronic straight hair, my stylist gives me a bit of advice: forgoing conditioner before a blow dry helps hair hold curls better. Leaving my strands damp, she coils my hair into sections before pinning them back. She tells me that working with wet tresses takes longer but the end result is serious holding power. While most stylists use a one bristle radial brush, here each section is given its own barrel. The effect is similar to keeping curlers in your hair. After shaking out the waves and dousing them in hairspray, I leave with better looking hair that has more bounce in its step than I have after a flat white. Lesson learnt: there are no shortcuts when it comes to the perfect blow dry. Patience, economical use of product and Studio M.A’s technique is the way to go. ◆

Our report from Pitti Fragranze in the sensuous city of Florence W o r d s L aw r e n c e R o u l l i e r W h i t e

all me jaded (Black Jade by Lubin, look it up) but if I had a pound for every perfumer who told me they were inspired to become such by picking roses in their grandmother’s garden I would have £26. Being a perfume buyer and writing about perfume you hear every backstory, some are more interesting than others, but none more riveting than that of Filippo Sorcinelli, a literal modern day renaissance man. When his charming colleague proudly explained his astounding story at the recent Pitti Fragranze fragrance fair in Florence, I was immediately captivated by the brand. The multi-talented painter, musician, creative director, photographer, graphic designer and artist has also made vestments for two popes; Benedetto XVI and Francesco. When packing the ceremonial garments for delivery Sorcinelli started scenting the boxes, and lo another career avenue opened for the creative powerhouse. As you would imagine his brand Unum [1] is impeccably presented and the scents are sublime. To try to explain

them on paper would not do them justice – they have to be experienced. Another high point of the show was the epic spectacle put on by brand building distributors, Intertade. An Italian company that represents some of the greatest talents in creative perfumery. It was a great privilege to meet one of my heroes, Niclas Lydeen, one half of the husband and wife team behind the immaculate Swedish brand Agonist [2]. For many years the perfumes by this duo were out of the reach of many as each one came in a handcrafted glass sculpture. Now they are available in more traditional packaging and are eminently more affordable. Liquid Crystal [3] is the one to look out for here.
39 DUL_Oct16_Perfume.indd 39
It was similarly exciting to meet up with a familiar face, Giovanni Castelli, whom together with Antonio Zuddas, had made the world a better place thanks to their inspired brand, Blood Concepts. Two new fragrances launch this month; XX and XY [4], inspired by the chromosomes that determine gender. However, far from being a masculine and a feminine scent the fragrances explore sexual fluidity; merging traditional female notes with a male scent and vice versa. One of my all-time favourite noses is Dominique Ropion, he created one of my favourite scents, Geranium Pour Monsieur for Frederic Malle. I was, therefore, thrilled to discover the latest from über-cool brand A Lab of Fire, is a creation of his. The perfectly named; Messy Sexy Just Rolled Out of Bed [5] was unveiled at Pitti and it is pretty amazing. It will be available midOctober. Destined to be an absolute bestseller this Christmas are the scents created for the late Andrée Putman, the famous French interior and product designer. Andrée Putman created her first signature fragrance in 2001. This year, fifteen years later, her daughter Olivia Putman has released five more fragrances in honour of her mother. I can honestly say there is not one amongst the collection I would not happily gift to anyone they are simply that wearable. This is one of the most cleverly and subtly commercial lines I have experience of late. You will enjoy sampling each and everyone. Un Peu d’Amour [6] is more than a little bit lovely. Ciao from Firenze.

CRAFT Exciting, experimental fare in Greenwich Peninsula Wo r d s c at h e r i n e h a l e s
have written in praise of Stevie Parle’s restaurant Craft London before and this time I was here for Test Kitchen Tuesdays. This weekly event allows chefs to try out new dishes and gauge the diner’s reactions. So, armed with a pencil and feedback form, my friend and I eagerly await the first of six small courses: bobby beans with Isle of Wight tomatoes, lovage and fresh almonds. The beans are perfectly cooked, retaining their crunchiness and rich colour (pale green beans are almost always a bad sign) and the tomatoes are sweet and juicy, offsetting the celery-taste of the lovage. Next up is wild salmon, cucumber, Evesham

arrive at the French House in Crystal Palace on a Monday night expecting an almost empty restaurant; what I am greeted with instead is a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere with families and couples dotted around enjoying their meals. The decor is tres chic, with vintage posters on the wall and charming touches throughout. As a vegetarian in a French restaurant, I am a little nervous that the menu might not have much in store for me – perhaps a salad or maybe a soup at best. Luckily our waiter, Sam immediately puts me at my ease suggesting that I opt for the Camembert starter (also a good sharing option) which comes accompanied by Pain au Levain bread and mini pickled onions and gherkins. The cheese is warm and creamy, the bread fresh and the pickled
veg provides just the right amount of saltiness. This dish is served with a glass of Sauvignon Blanc Valentin Fleur Vin de Pays, a deliciously dry white that cuts through the richness of the dish perfectly. For my main course, after another hint from the wonderful Sam, I choose the Tarte Flambe au Chevre. This comes laden with goat’s cheese, mushrooms and glistening white onions, finished off with a drizzle of lavender honey. The texture of the thin, crispy base works wonderfully with the smooth goat’s cheese and the honey adds a note of sweetness that is almost irresistible. Pudding is another excellent Tarte Flambee, this time with apples and Grand Marnier. The verdict? Great vibes and even better food.

radishes, fresh cheese and pickled onions. We don’t get on with this dish as well as the first; there seems to be a little too much going on but the salmon is exceptional and the radishes crisp and spicy. The Cornish crab, cherry, fennel pollen and celery is, on the other hand, completely weird and wonderful. This is followed by veal sweetbread with salmon roe, elderflowers, cauliflower and brown butter. The combination of the roe and the sweetbread is genius – the salty-sweet richness works brilliantly. Both puddings are fabulous and we leave feeling as though we have been a part of a great experiment.

FOOD & DRINK / Q&A
Bao Down Co-founders Frank Yeung and Nick Birkett on what makes Peckham favourite Mr Bao so special Wo r d s c at h e r i n e h a l e s
CATHERINE HALES: What made you decide to open Mr. Bao? NICK BIRKETT: We’d eaten bao buns all over the world. It’s the type of food that makes you feel happy. There's something wonderfully nostalgic about having a soft, squidgy little bun in your hands. However it took our friend Blanca from Miss Tapas restaurant in Peckham to point out that we should open a bao restaurant given how much we loved them! CH: Why did you choose Peckham? NB: Because it’s home! The Peckham community are a savvy, creative crowd who know and appreciate good food. We knew it would be a challenge but that there was a receptive market for the right idea. CH:Can you describe the food? NB: We serve small plates of Taiwanese inspired food. Our focus is on the steamed bao bun. They are incredibly soft and we fill them with everything from slow cooked beef brisket with smacked cucumber, jalapeños and wasabi mayo to fried tofu, golden kimchi and miso. We have lots of options for vegetarians, vegans and gluten free people too.
With the exception of the pieces flown in from Taiwan, almost everything else is from suppliers within a few miles of the restaurant
One of their eponymous and delicious bao buns
CH: Why did you start serving brunch? NB: Brunch is the best meal in the week. There's a wonderful relaxed feel at Mr Bao at weekend brunch with a mix of families, professional creatives all the way through to grandparents. We played around with brunch dishes for ages. The Bao Benedict we serve with slow cooked, blackened pork belly is my favourite thing in the restaurant. A lot of people come for it every single week.
Mr Bao Co-Founders Frank Yeung and Nick Birkett with Executive Chef John
WE ARE VERY HAPPY being
Peckham’s Taiwanese RESTAURANT
CH: What is the interior style? NB: The interior takes its inspiration from the docks in Taiwan. We have maps of the Taiwanese coast going back to the 1940s, a lot of very solid aged wood and some beautiful patterned tiles. Our favourite bits of the restaurant are the old copper sink and Peckham's Smallest Art Gallery which are both in the bathroom. CH: What traditional Taiwanese inspiration do you use at the restaurant? NB: One of our suppliers is run by an awesome little Taiwanese lady. She is FULL of energy and is always at Mr Bao giving us new ingredients to try. She was the one who found our buckwheat tea and our peach beers.
47 Dul_Oct16_MR BAO.indd 47
CH: Do you have any favourite Peckham spots? NB: So many. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the wonderful Miss Tapas restaurant. Mr Bao wouldn't have happened had it not been for Blanca who runs Miss Tapas. CH: What would be your advice to anyone opening a restaurant? NB: Speak to people who've done it before. Bite off a lot less than you think you can chew. CH: What’s next for Mr. Bao? NB: We will keep innovating our menu in Peckham. We've got so many ideas that we want to get our customers to try so the menu will continue to evolve. We keep being offered properties to take for new sites but we aren't in a rush. When we are offered the perfect site we will take it, but we are very happy being Peckham's Taiwanese restaurant!

THE HIGH LIFE Dubai’s holiday appeal continues to grow and it’s not hard to see why Wo r d s r o s e n o e l
T
here was a time when Dubai could have been classed as purely a business destination; that time has passed and tourism is on the rise year after year, with the UK practically leading the charge as the fourth highest market for visitors to Dubai after India, Saudi Arabia and Oman. Among those drawn to the winter sun and the high rise architecture are the Beckhams and Beyoncé who have chosen Dubai as their winter sun getaway. There is also the fact that despite Dubai’s population of 2.5 million, the amount of people entering the country each year reaches from between eight and twelve million. So, what is the appeal? What draws the hordes of holidaymakers that previously chose the south of France or the Costa del Sol over this desert destination? Well, it could be the immense number of international events that are happening there; this winter alone will see the DP World Tour Championship (a prestigious golfing event) take place in November as well as the Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens and an impressive New Year’s fireworks display. But for those looking for a more traditional family holiday, choices of four to five star hotels are innumerable. The JA Jebel Ali Beach hotel features 231 rooms and suites

overlooking the sea, private marina and hotel gardens. Guests who are keen to hit the greens will be delighted to discover that the hotel is part of the award-winning JA Jebel Ali Golf Resort. Although a plus for those with a passion for the golf, the hotel can also rival Caribbean resorts (a considerably longer and more expensive plane ride away) for beautiful, palm-lined beaches. Those looking to relax can go for a treatment at the spa and afterwards lounge by one of the two swimming pools the hotel has to offer. Acclaimed restaurants and top of the range sporting facilities are also a short walk away while parents looking to find a little alone time can book children into one of the many kids’ clubs that the hotel offers. The rooms themselves are equipped with every mod-con imaginable and decorated in a timeless style that is miles away from the brash glamour that is often associated with Dubai hotels and resorts.

TRAVEL / WANDERLUST In short, a five star family holiday without any of the inconvenience associated with destinations found further afield but with all the advantages. Activities can range from visiting the flamingos at Ras Al Khor and watching the camel racing to splashing around at Aquaventure (part of Atlantis the Palm), one of the most elaborate and enormous waterparks in the world. Needless to say, opportunities for retail therapy are practically endless with malls the size of small villages housing every designer label you’ve ever heard of and a few besides. While your wallet gets slimmer, you might actually find your waistline expanding. Excellent French food can be found at Margaux, the brainchild of Alain Ducasse’s protégé Julian Mercier whereas you can’t beat Al Hadheerah for traditional Arabian cuisine. Despite its undeniable appeal to families, in recent years Dubai has also

been attracting a younger set who would previously have been more likely to be spotted on a beach in Ibiza than anywhere in the United Arab Emirates. Places like Purobeach have a lot to do with this boom, offering a party atmosphere but tempered with a feeling of glamour and exclusivity not found in Europe. They have two locations in Dubai, one at the base of the new Palm in Jebel Ali that opened in 2015 and another at the Conrad Dubai. The latter, a self-described urban oasis, is located on the 6th floor of the newly opened luxury hotel. It provides a lofty retreat from the hubbub below with calming blue water lapping peacefully and signature cocktails on tap. Purobeach has four other locations outside the UAE, and the Conrad follows their successful model with white sun loungers, lush,
landscaped gardens and private cocoon beds. Music is provided by world class DJs and the food follows the Purobeach ‘M3 cuisine’ concept, a combination of Miami, Marrakech and Melbourne influences. Perhaps the best part of the whole experience is the feeling of having discovered a hidden gem and as you lounge by the pool, eating fresh fruit and soaking up the atmosphere and temperate November weather, the urge to keep it all to yourself is almost irresistible. Dubai as a whole continues to become a more viable winter holiday option every year and whether you’re embarking on your annual family holiday, attending a world-class sporting event or simply looking to unwind with friends, it ticks every single box. u

TRAVEL / GULF AIR
Bright Future Gulf Air announces orders of 45 aircraft with Boeing and Airbus at the Bahrain International Air Show 2016 Wo r d s a b s o l u t e ly
S
ince their great success sponsoring the Bahrain Grand Prix in April this year, Gulf Air has gone from strength to strength. Most recently, the Kingdom of Bahrain’s national carrier has announced, on the first day of the Bahrain International Airshow 2016, restructured orders of 45 aircraft with Boeing and Airbus in deals worth a combined total of USD7.6 billion. This order will be made up of 6 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, 17 Airbus A321neo and 12 Airbus A320neo aircraft. The delivery of these aircraft will begin in the second quarter of 2018 and come as a result of extensive negotiations with both aircraft manufacturers. The restructured orders will simplify Gulf Air’s future widebody fleet to Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners and make sure that its future narrow-body fleet will mostly focus on A320 neo Family aircraft. So, what does all this exciting news mean for you and me? Most importantly it means that Gulf Air will have the capability to expand and begin to realise the airline’s extensively studied future network requirements. It also ensures that Gulf Air will maintain one of the youngest fleets in the region while building upon its award-winning reliability and on-time performance. Commenting on the agreement, Gulf Air Chief Executive Officer Mr. Maher Salman Al Musallam, said, “As long-

standing partners, Boeing and Airbus have understood the challenges faced by Gulf Air and embraced our future looking strategy. I am delighted that we have arrived at mutually agreeable solutions to restructure our previous orders with aircraft that are more fuel-efficient, modernised, reliable and which, at the same time, allow Gulf Air to operate our wide and narrow-body fleet at lower operating costs. This is in-line with our mission to put the airline firmly on a path towards long term commercial sustainability.” As Mr. Maher commented later on, “the airline’s future looks increasingly promising.” gulfair.com

ith the impending cold weather and the reality of extortionate bills on the horizon, there is no better time to find an alternative and effective way to heat the home. Thick winter knits and hearty food may warm a little, but nothing beats a roaring fire on a chilly winter night. Luxury fireplace dealers Grate Expectations know a thing or two about heating the home – and they source some of the best fireplace and stoves from producers around the world. One of the most successful fireplace producers in the world, Dru, hails from the Netherlands and has been leading the way in the market since 1754. New to Drus’ designer portfolio is the Maestro Eco Wave range of contemporary balanced flue gas fires. Unlike the Metro fires, the Maestro has more height and

It also has the option of clear view glass to cleverly replicate the appearance of an open-fronted real fire. Dru Maestro gas fires can be installed with a PowerVent® motorised flue system, making them completely flexible to be located almost anywhere in the home. Its impressive Eco Wave function, unique to the designer range fires, has a wifi module option that enables you to communicate with it via an app on your phone or tablet. here’s something about being forbidden to read further on in a forward to a book that just makes its contents more enticing. This is the case with Ransom Riggs’ Tales of the Peculiar which, in true gothic-style, are presented as having an immense pedigree as the folklore of the race of the ‘Peculiar’ blessed (or cursed) with special abilities. The stories are witty, philosophic and often delightfully grotesque. Davidson’s illustrations are quite beautiful and add to the idea that these stories have long roots, albeit running parallel to those of traditional wondertales.

When it was revealed during the summer that the new Prime Minister is lifting the 18-year ban on grammars, she was accused by of “opening old wounds” by a Martin Stephen, previously high master of St Paul’s School. On the one side there are those who think grammar schools are brilliant agents of social mobility, providing bright children with the opportunity to excel, whatever their background. For others they are the opposite, a failed experiment in social selection that merely entrenches advantage and privilege for the few at the expense of the many. Stephen said: “If you condemn 70 per cent of the school populace to sump schools you create a vehicle not for social mobility but rather a mass uprising.” It is a hugely symbolic for Theresa May – herself the product of a grammar school – to lift the ban imposed by Tony Blair nearly two decades ago. Many in the Conservative Party have campaigned for the return of grammar schools for years. Grammar schools grew from the 1940s to the 1970s, and by the mid-1960s, 1,300 grammars were educating a quarter of all pupils (and their pupils won half of all Oxbridge places). The best were (and still are) bastions of rigorous academia, where Latin and Greek were learnt as standard and poems learnt by rote. But politics turned against grammars, and in 1976 the Education Act compelled local authorities to introduce comprehensive education. Yet existing grammars still dominate the league tables, often outclassing top private schools, and tiger mothers fight for places with Hunger Games-style ferocity. Yet it is this issue of selection, the punishing 11+ entrance exam taken to
ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES
EDUCATION2.indd 70
Many in the
CONSERVATIVE PARTY have CAMPAIGNED for the return OF GRAMMARS FOR YEARS grab a grammar place, that makes these schools repellent for their opponents. Critics say grammar schools cream off only the brightest (or the most tutored) and to introduce more will only encourage the academic arms race that already blights the private sector, and leaves no room for less privileged children. Evidence collected by the Sutton Trust, a charity that works to improve social mobility through education, found that less than three per cent of grammar school entrants are entitled to free school meals, a marker of
social disadvantage – compared with 18 per cent of English children overall. But for politicians like cabinet ministers David Davis and Liam Fox, the answer to this disparity is to create more grammar schools. They are the founders of pressure group Conservative Voice which wants to see a new grammar school system for the 21st century, and has already drawn up plans for 20 new grammars created initially in deprived areas of Britain to boost “choice, opportunity for all and aspiration”. As David Cameron’s government made it a requirement that all new state schools should be free schools, a type of academy set up by community groups or chains, it is possible that any new grammars will take the form of free schools. But free schools are also nonselective, so entrance tests for grammar free schools would have to change. It is also likely that new grammars will follow the model of free schools like the London Academy of Excellence (LAE), a very successful selective sixth-form college in Newham that has already sent eight pupils to Oxford and Cambridge. A Westminster source said: “What they [the government] want is to introduce a LAE, but for 11- to 18-year-olds.” But for many senior educationalists, including outgoing Ofsted inspector Sir Michael Wilshaw, any sort of return to grammar education is not the answer. Many have said that they believe the government should press on with the root and branch reforms of A-levels and GCSEs, instigated by Michael Gove, continue with academisation and widen access to technical training. Tony Little, a former headmaster of Eton, said the debate about expanding the number of grammars was the “wrong one to have” and urged a focus on quality instead. “Beware the nostalgic comfort of a golden age. Held up to the light, most golden ages do not glister, they prove to be made of base metal.” ◆

he range of subjects taught is imaginative, well constructed and contributes well to students’ achievement and their outstanding spiritual, cultural and moral development.’ Ofsted Kingsdale provides exceptionally rich opportunities to challenge students of all abilities including options in Year 9 to study Triple Science, Latin, Economics and Psychology and the opportunity to study two languages from Year 7. Kingsdale attracts many able students. We operate a condensed or accelerated Key Stage 3 programme of study to meet the particular needs and aspirations of all of the students and their families. The school offers a wide variety of academic subjects including 4 or 5 optional courses selected by each child in addition to enrichment activities every day.
Average class sizes are approximately 20 across all subjects. We have one of the best pupil to teacher ratios of any secondary school in London. Students have access to iPads, PCs, Apple Macs, laptops, wireless technology and a Virtual Learning Environment and we have introduced one to one mobile technology in all lessons i.e. students benefit from having the opportunity to use an iPad safely for educational purposes. Subsidised excursions to amazing destinations such as Japan, Namibia, Brazil, the USA and the French Alps are organised every year.
KINGSDALE has one of THE BEST pupil to teacher ratios IN LONDON In 2016 Kingsdale achieved its best ever A Level results with some extraordinary individual performances including students going on to Oxford and to study Medicine. It had another outstanding set of Year 11 GCSE outcomes with over 40% of all results achieved awarded an A* or A grade with more than 50 students achieving 10 or more A*/A grades! In 2015 Kingsdale ranked in the top 100 non-selective schools for performance at Key Stage 4 and was in the top 3 state schools for performance in music as determined by the Incorporated Society of Musicians (ISM).

Susan Tary SALES MANAG ER KFH, Hayes
REBECCA NOONAN
T
he history of Hayes can be traced back over eight hundred years, having been first documented in 1177. It’s been home to such illustrious characters such as William Pitt the Elder and Younger who lived at Hayes Place, and who have been immortalised in the Chatham Avenue and Pittsmead Avenue street names. Hayes has a wonderful family feel and great community spirit. With lovely local businesses and green open spaces, Hayes’ popularity is continually growing. Some of my favourite local businesses include Dillingers, a great American diner in the village, Java & Chai, a quaint tearoom on the High Street, and Daisy Faye, a fun boutique where you can find brilliant one off pieces. I’m also excited about the new Turkish restaurant Turga, which is due to open imminently. I’ve been familiar with Hayes for over twenty years. As well as working here, many of my friends and family call it home. Initially, I had my own retail business, but I then
Hayes has a wonderful family feel and great community spirit
got involved with new build property investment and was hooked. As I’ve always worked in sales and have been fascinated by other people’s homes and their style ideas, it was a very short jump into estate agency. Property in Hayes is ideal for families. While it has many three and four bedroom semi detached houses, there are also some impressive larger detached properties on roads such as West Common Road, Redgate Drive and Baston Road. Although we’ve traditionally had residents who have lived in Hayes all of their lives, over the past few years we’ve seen much younger families moving to the area. Primarily, this is because of the excellent local schools Hayes has to offer. Not only
rated as Outstanding by Ofsted, Hayes Secondary School has also been awarded a ‘World Class’ status, attracting pupils not just from the wider Bromley borough, but London as a whole. Other local schools include Temple Academy of Performing Arts, and Baston House School, which specialises in providing education for autistic children. Post Brexit, the demand for properties in Hayes has remained buoyant, although we did see the market soften a little in the immediate aftermath. However, as is traditional for this time of year, the market has definitely started moving more quickly during the past few weeks. In fact, we are now seeing more buyers registering to secure properties than we did before the referendum. I believe the popularity of Hayes will endure. Families will always be attracted to the area because of the great community feel and aforementioned schools. Moreover, with the talk of the Bakerloo line extension into Hayes, as well as the possibility of the introduction of the tram into the area, Hayes will continue to thrive. ◆

n the face of it parents in London’s central boroughs should have a wide choice of state secondary schools to send their children to – there are 112 secondary schools for them to choose from. But of these only 23 are 'Outstanding' and 20 'Good', so competition is white hot for these better establishments and consequently only two thirds of parents get their first choice. To try and allay furious parents and balance the system, most schools work hard to filter applications by prioritising some children over others. These often include those with disabilities, particular religions (for faith schools), academic ability and the most controversial one… proximity to the school. But not all do this. For example, The Grey Coat Hospital in Pimlico where Michael Gove famously sent his daughter in 2014, does not have a catchment area. Parents who want to send their children to an 'Outstanding' state school in central London may have one choice left – to move close to their target school and hope to fall within its catchment area, a trend that has made homes within these areas 25% more expensive, according to Savills. So how much might these homes cost? Here we look at six of central London’s 'Outstanding' schools and the property markets in their catchment areas. u

PROPERTY AROUND THE SCHOOLS:
Pimlico Academy has a wide catchment area which is approximately a three mile circle around the school, but the schools’ own pupil heat map reveals that most come from Pimlico and Vauxhall. Despite being in the heart of London, it’s largely a house market ranging from £700,000 for a post-war three bedroom terraced house between Kennington and Vauxhall to around £4.5 million for a period two bedroom terrace near Sloane Square. But prices quickly escalate to tens of millions for the larger houses off Eaton Terrace.

PIMLICO ACADEMY
This is an expensive catchment area to join. Prices start at £600,000 for a two bedroom flat and rise up to £5 million for a luxury penthouse apartment. But the median price is around £1.5 million for a two bedroom property.
This is a market for flat buyers, which start at £300,000 for a one bedroom and rise to £2.65 million for a luxury three bedroom. The bulk of two bedroom apartments for sale are between £600,000 and £750,000.

BRITISH DESIGNERS Why London is a design leader
L
ondon was recently heralded as the ‘design capital of the world’ by The New York Times. And every year the London Design Festival pulls in 350,000 people from 60 countries to see one of the most vibrant creative sectors in the capital – along with fashion and film – according to the Mayor of London. This is particularly true in the world of interior design. There are now dozens of companies and interior designers offering the capital’s prime homeowners a huge range of styles. These include high profile names such as the queen of interior design, Kelly Hoppen, along with Abigail Ahearn, Tara Bernard, the Candy brothers and Oliver Burns as well as older names such as Anouska Hempel and Nicky Haslam. But it’s not just private houses that get luxury makeovers. London’s plethora of new homes developers also now dip

into this palette of talent to give their apartments ‘the look’. Here we reveal some of the best for sale at the moment. u
SQUIRE & PARTNERS
The company’s been busy recently at Chelsea Barracks, South Bank Place and One Tower Bridge but we like this more boutique effort off Clapham Common on Macaulay Road. There the company has designed three townhouses, one of which is home to the company’s founder and senior partner Michael Square, while the other two are being sold privately. The six bed houses are modern on the outside, although inside they take their design cues from the Victorian houses that surround them. More information: squireandpartners.com
ANDY STURGEON

private gardens in the capital so being a high-profile landscape designer here is always going to attract attention. And that’s exactly what Brighton-based garden designer Andy Sturgeon has done after winning a Best in Show gong at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show for his Jurassicinspired Telegraph Garden. But home buyers can also get the Sturgeon look if they buy an apartment at Lillie Square. The development, which comprises over 800 properties, is having its large communal gardens designed by Andy and work is already under way on the greenery. More information: lilliesquare.com
LOUISE WICKSTEED, 1508 LONDON
This multi-disciplinary practice based in Pimlico works at the high end of the London interior world and its latest work, Project Pearl, is a four bedroom Belgravia mansion on Chesham Place currently for sale with Savills at £17.9 million. “The impressive scale and potential light of the principal rooms struck me as soon as I visited the property,” says Louise. “Throughout the design process we wanted to work with and enhance these elements. By re-introducing sympathetic period detailing but keeping everything in a consistent palette.” More information: 1508london.com
