y first memory of pantomime, oddly, revolved around Frank Bruno. He was the star of the show in London towards the end of the 1980s and it's probably the most excited I have ever seen my father in a theatre, whereas I was a little non-plussed about who he was and why it was so funny he was in the panto.
Years later, and having got into boxing in my teens, I know only too well now who Frank Bruno is, but also I am aware of the criticism he faced appearing in pantomime. To many, he was cheating his boxing roots, but to me he was giving the public what they wanted: more time with the loveable Frank Bruno.

Also, directing ire towards panto is incredibly short sighted. So much work goes into staging these festive traditions, as shown by our special in this issue focusing on Corn Exchange Newbury's show, which has some magical connections to The Hobbit and Harry Potter. I, for one, can't wait to see it and kick start the festivities.
Have a very merry Christmas!

Most Magical time of the year
The worlds of Harry Potter and The Hobbit have been thrown together for this year’s panto at Corn Exchange Newbury
The Cinderella company at Corn Exchange Newbury photo by The Other Richard 2021
Corn Exchange Newbury recently announced their star-studded cast and creative team for this year’s pantomime, Dick Whittington
This incredible cast will feature Harry Potter film star Chris Rankin, who is best known for playing Percy Weasley in the Wizarding World franchise, and the show has been created by Plested Brown and Wilsher, which is made up of Amanda Wilsher, Clare Plested, and Adam Brown, the latter a star of The Hobbit and a Newbury local. The two tell Absolutely what we can expect and the lure of the local stage.
Chris Rankin
Q What is your earliest memory of going to a pantomime?
A I can’t remember the year, but I know it would have been York Theatre Royal pantomime at some point in the early 1990s. It’s a panto I went to every year with my family, and continued to do so well into my 30s! It was a mad-cap show, with the same writer/director and cast every year for decades. In fact, Berwick Kaler the Dame / Director “retired” a few years ago from the show on the 40th anniversary of his first York panto. I blame them entirely for my love of theatre!
I think going to pantomime really opened my eyes to the world of theatre. I always loved the excitement of live performance – the lights, the sets and all of it. It was many years, however, before I really got my teeth into performing myself – I was a cripplingly shy kid and didn’t really get the performing bug until I was 11 or 12 when I started high school and got involved in the musicals there. My first proper amateur show was Bugsy Malone
“GOING TO PANTO REALLY OPENED MY EYES TO THE WORLD OF THEATRE”
Q Was the part of Percy Weasley pretty much your first professional role?
A Pretty much. In fact, it was the first ever job I had! I’d not even had a paper round (do they still exist?!) before Percy came along.
Q Did you have any inkling at that time about how big the Harry Potter films would be?
A Honestly? Not really. I was quite naive about how movies worked. The audition process for me was so quick – from audition to starting filming was only about three weeks – that I don’t think I had the time to consider it. All I knew was that we were having a lovely time on set, and I was swept up in the fun of the job. It wasn’t until the premiere of the first movie that I think it really sunk in that this thing I’d been doing for the last 12 months was going to be seen by millions of people.
Q How do you look back at the whole experience from the first film to the last?
A I look back on it with fondness. Eleven years from start to finish is a long time – but I feel incredibly fortunate to have been a part of something quite so monumental. We were so lucky to work with literally the greatest of British and international talent on those movies; and I think it’s testament to the atmosphere on those sets that most
of the crew stayed around to make all eight of the movies, with many of them carrying on working on Fantastic Beasts as well.
Q You have starred in pantomimes before – what do you love about being involved in them?
A Panto is very often the first time a child goes to the theatre, and for a lot of families it can be the one time of the year that they have the chance to see a live show, so I strongly believe that it should be an experience they treasure. There’s something magical about the tradition of pantomime. We all know the “rules”, they’re almost

part of our DNA. I love the intensity of the process – putting a full-scale musical production together in a matter of days, often with a group of people you’ve never met before, performing it 12 times a week for a month and then it vanishes again. Live theatre is never the same twice, and due to the interactive nature of panto, that is really true. It’s a collaboration between the performers and the audience – and when it’s done right, it’s electric!
Q What attracted you to Corn Exchange Newbury’s Dick Whittington?
A Adam, our director, and I met properly a few years ago whilst in a hotel in Germany after a project we were both involved with was cancelled last minute due to Covid complications. We ended up bonding over a shared passion for pantomime and a bowl of nuts in the bar! I was delighted that when they were casting Dick Whittington
“IT'S A MIX OF LAUGHTER, UNPREDICTABLE ENERGY AND JOY ”
this year, he approached me about playing Fitzwarren. Although initially I was alarmed to realise I was old enough to play Alice’s dad! I’m clearly not ageing well for 26…
Q Are you familiar with Corn Exchange Newbury and the surrounding area?
A This will be the first time I’ve been lucky enough to spend any amount of time in Newbury since our car got a puncture on the way to the Isle of Wight in 1992. So, I’m really looking forward to getting to know the town and the beautiful Corn Exchange. Having worked on Downton Abbey for the best part of a year however, I’m quite familiar with the area. Part of my job was booking hotel accommodation for everyone from Dame Maggie Smith to the production runners – so I’ve got a working knowledge of every hotel from Chieveley services to Andover!
Adam Brown
Q Was your first appearance on stage in a panto at the Corn Exchange Newbury?
A Absolutely! My first appearance on stage was indeed in panto at the Corn Exchange in Newbury, where I played the Beast’s mischievous sidekick in Beauty and the Beast, performing alongside my then-comedy partner Clare Plested. That year, we had the fantastic opportunity to work with the
brilliant comedy director Cal McCrystal. Fast forward to last year, and I found myself under Cal’s direction once again in Iolanthe for the English National Opera – and later in the West End, sharing the stage with none other than Ian McKellen in Mother Goose! That 2005 panto season in Newbury was pure, unfiltered joy. It remains one of the most fun times of my life and cemented my love for the chaotic, heartwarming magic of panto. There’s nothing quite like the mix of laughter, unpredictable energy, and shared joy that panto brings. It hooks you for life! I hope our actors get the same bug this year.
Q You have been involved in several shows at the venue –what’s great about it?
A The Corn Exchange holds a really special place in my heart. It’s right in my hometown (well, almost, I’m from Hungerford), and it was a real champion of our theatre company, Plested and Brown. They didn’t just host our shows – they gave us rehearsal space, an o ce, and a true creative home base. From that little hub in Newbury, we created shows, sought funding, and took our work on tour
Adam in The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey

across the UK. The Corn Exchange believed in us from the start, supporting us in a way that’s rare to find, and that support made it possible for us to grow, experiment, and bring our work to audiences far and wide.
Q Has it been a joy to create this year’s panto, Dick Whittington?
A Oh, absolutely, it’s been a blast putting together Dick Whittington for this year! Newbury is really in for a treat. We’ve given the story a fresh spin to make it resonate with a younger, new-totheatre audience, while still packing in all the classic jokes, slapstick, and routines that make panto what it is. It’s a perfect blend of tradition and a few surprises. I can’t wait to dive into directing in just a few weeks; bringing it all to life is going to be so much fun.
Q What can we expect to see?
A Get ready for a breakdancing Dick Whittington, a Rat villain who could rival Donald Trump, a cat you’ll want to take home, and… yep, a wild trip to the dancing island of Ibiza! We’ve packed in banging pop tunes, big laughs, fantastic singers and outrageous costumes. This panto’s got it all – buckle up, Newburyshire!
Q Can you compare working in an intimate venue like this to starring in a movie behemoth like The Hobbit?
A There’s really no comparison – it’s like being in two totally di erent universes. On a film set, especially for something as huge as The Hobbit, you feel like a tiny cog in a gigantic machine. There are so many people buzzing around that you often don’t get a say in the creative decisions. But working in an intimate
venue like the Corn Exchange is very di erent. As the director and writer I get to call the shots and shape the show from start to finish. Being the boss is definitely better for a control freak like me! I love both experiences, but let’s be honest: having that kind of creative control in a smaller setting is way more rewarding.
Q How do you look back on your experiences playing Ori in The Hobbit?
A Looking back on my time in The Hobbit, I can honestly say it was one of the best experiences of my life. The friendships I made there are truly special – unlike any other film or TV job I’ve done. Working in New Zealand for two and a half years was just epic. I learned to ride horses, wield an axe, and even got to fly to work in a helicopter. I was neighbours with Orlando Bloom, I went bowling with Billy Connolly and even saw a One Direction concert with Ian McKellen! The whole adventure was over 10 years ago now, but it was a wild ride, and I wouldn’t trade those memories for anything.
Dick Whittington runs until 5 January, 2025. See more at cornexchangenew.com

In with a bang
How often do you chat to someone about the joy of Christmas, but when the conversation turns to New Year’s Eve, invariably there is an air of disappointment? Well, it seems as if Berkshire and Buckinghamshire didn’t get the memo. Both counties are serving up a whole host of events that will make the end of 2024 and start of 2025 a memorable one. Here we look at five parties ramping up the celebrations, starting at that most decadent location: Crazy Bear
CRAZY BEAR
crazybeargroup.co.uk
Watch the clock strike 12 in the decadence of the Crazy Bear Stadhampton or Beaconsfield, with a host of di erent
experiences available. From an incredible DJ spinning the right tunes to get the party started, to a Brazilian bongo player livening up any flagging spirits, via a stunning meal in one of the two restaurants, either location will serve up a night to remember.
To get us into the spirit, Absolutely sat down with Crazy Bear’s managing director, Tom Etridge, to find out about the origins of the group and what lies in store at the end of the year.
Q Where does the Crazy Bear story begin?
A The Crazy Bear story started in 1993, building a reputation for decadent interiors, extravagant events and high quality restaurants.
Q Do you know the origins of the name itself, Crazy Bear?
A The first Crazy Bear was originally
a pub called the Bear and Ragged Sta , 1 Bear Lane, Stadhampton and was the first property in the Crazy Bear portfolio, opening in South Oxfordshire in 1993, followed by Beaconsfield in 2008.
Q What first impressions are you looking to make when someone steps into one of the sites for the first time?
A Providing unique and high quality experiences means balancing the flamboyant look with an immaculate level of service. First impressions should be surprise and delight and most importantly a sense that you will be looked after during the stay.
Q How would you describe the di erent styles of rooms available?
A Our signature eccentricity extends across our four room types – decadent, boujee, cosy, and snug. Original architectural details such

as exposed Tudor beams are combined with eclectic, indulgent finishes. Rooms feature chandeliers, mirrored walls and ceilings, as well as copper roll-top baths.
Q Do you think Crazy Bear is just made for NYE parties?
A We are known for hosting incredible New Year’s Eve parties, however it’s just as important that couples can enjoy a quiet midweek date night. Throughout the year we put on a show with various Crazy Bear parties featuring talented performers and exceptional musicians, and we also host a wide range of our guest’s events – weddings, corporate events etc.
Q What can you tell us about the NYE parties at both Crazy Bear sites?
A Crazy Bear Beaconsfield and Stadhampton are great places to ring in the New Year.
This year, both properties will host special NYE events with a six-course English or Thai sharing menu and an evening filled with incredible entertainment, including stilt artists, aerial performers, burlesque dancers, a live sax player and bongo player, as well as DJs playing all night. It should be quite a night.
Q As we head into 2025, what are the aims for the Crazy Bear Group?
A It is set to be an exciting year for Crazy Bear, with two new restaurant openings in the early part of the year, which will be announced shortly.

FOR YOUR TOMORROW
Stowe Gardens welcomed its busiest day ever as people flock to see memorial artwork
Since Stowe Gardens launched For Your Tomorrow on 1st October, 30,000 people have visited the memorial artwork. Stowe’s busiest ever day was on Sunday 13th October when 4,000 people visited in one day.
The installation of 1,475 silhouettes of military personnel commemorates the soldiers, sailors and airmen under British Command killed in the D-Day landing 80 years ago in 1944. This is the first time the full installation of 1,475 servicemen has been displayed in the UK. Also on display at Stowe are two bespoke figures of nurses who died while helping to save 75 men from a sinking hospital ship. In addition, there are 50 French resistance fighter silhouettes placed in the woodland alongside the footpath that circles the valley.
For Your Tomorrow – the People’s Tribute was created by community artist Dan Barton of Standing with Giants and each of the life-sized figures was made by the charity’s volunteers. The full installation weighs in excess of 30 tonnes and took two weeks to install in the Grecian Valley at Stowe Gardens with the help of more than 200 volunteers.
Every day, Stowe welcomed veterans displaying their medals who visit the installation to reflect and pay their respects in the Memorial Garden. One veteran left the following message after his visit: “Standing with Giants’ For Your Tomorrow is intensely emotional, breathtakingly powerful and poignantly beautiful. I wasn’t expecting the weight of emotion I felt until I was standing amongst the figures, each with their head bowed. I had an overwhelming need to touch them to let them know they were not alone. But what really got to me were the last letters home displayed on the boards amongst them. The first one I read had me in tears, clearly written from a recent conflict, it hit home hard. I’ve stood silently at too many ceremonies honouring the fallen on their last journey home and the memories came flooding back. Never were the words ‘For Your Tomorrow’ more apt. It is a remarkable tribute.”
Tanya Brittain, General Manager of the National Trust gardens at Stowe Gardens, says: “Stowe has a rich military history, and the stunning backdrop of the Grecian Valley provides an ideal setting for this poignant outdoor art installation.” The installation closed on 11 November – but it certainly will not be forgotten.

Cirque du Soleil’s latest production is a stunning mix of spectacle and fantasy
orteo, one of Cirque du Soelil’s most enchanting productions, is set to open at London’s famed Royal Albert Hall in January 2025. A wholly unique production with a stage that splits the venue into two halves, the show first premiered in Montreal in April 2005, and has since amazed over 11 million spectators, in 22 countries, on four continents. Corteo will be presented at the Royal Albert Hall from 9th January. Corteo, which means cortege in Italian, is a joyous procession, a festive parade imagined by a clown. The show brings together the passion of the actor with the grace and power of the acrobat to plunge the audience into a theatrical world of fun, comedy and spontaneity situated in a mysterious space between heaven and earth.
The clown’s dreamlike imagination pictures his own funeral taking place in a carnival atmosphere, watched over by quietly caring angels. Juxtaposing the large with the small, the ridiculous with the tragic and the magic of perfection with the charm of imperfection, the show highlights the strength and fragility of the clown, as well as his wisdom and kindness, to illustrate the portion of humanity that is within each of us. The music turns lyrical and playful carrying Corteo through a timeless celebration in which illusion teases reality.

Samuel Beckett's enigmatic classic in a new production at Theatre Royal Haymarket
By PENDLE HARTE
It’s not a cheerful play, as everyone knows. Samuel Beckett’s enigmatic 1948 play is famously one where nothing happens. Two characters, devoid of context or backstory, appear in on a road, near a tree, and stay there, claiming to be waiting for someone. They seem to do this every day, with little recollection of the day before. It’s a mysterious and surreal premise, and the play contributed to a post-war revolution in the world of theatre. It’s brilliantly cast. Ben Whishaw is a twitchy Vladimir and Lucian Msamati a slumpy Estragon. Physically, they’re a great match for each other, a comedy duo. Estragon loses a shoe and limps around with his overalls hanging, while Vladimir’s trousers are pulled nervously high and he fidgets with his bobble hat. Their desolate setting as envisioned by talented set designer Rae Smith is colourless and bleak, and everything looks like a black and white film with some touches of painted colour. It exists outside time and place – it could be a post-apocalyptic landscape, or simply quite remote. There’s no explanation and no introduction: we are simply here with two characters who
“There's no explanation and no introduction: we are simply here”
reveal themselves to be trapped in a seemingly endless cycle of inactivity in the name of waiting for someone who never shows up. Is that ultimately what life is?
Written in the aftermath of the Holocaust, the play is generally interpreted to be about displacement and powerlessness. There’s a terrifying moment when the landowner Pozzo appears with his slave, Lucky, whose hollow-eyed stare and beaten appearance are genuinely disturbing, but the pair become comic alongside Vladimir and Estragon with their absurd dialogue and even slapstick. It’s an intriguing production, light and comic with a darkness at its core. But don’t expect an escape from your deepest fears.

BUSINESS : Founder & Medical Doctor, Berkshire Aesthetics
WEBSITE : berkshireaesthetics.com
Q What has been your proudest working moment when you look back at 2024?
A Definitely helping to shape the new regulations that will govern how aesthetics is practiced in England next year.
This means being able to input into how patients can be protected and how to ensure treatments can be provided safely.
Q What new developments have you implemented at Berkshire Aesthetics?
A We are seeing an increase in patients taking a long term view of treatments and increasing their use of skincare and making long term plans rather than seeking quick fixes. The understanding of lifestyle and how health impacts ageing is becoming more important.
Q What are you looking forward to most in 2025?
A My son has reached an age where he is starting to have conversations and I am looking forward to hearing what he has to say. The complex world of adults can often be seen so simply when we slow down and also how wonderful it is when we take a new perspective such as that of a child.
Q Will you be having much time o over the festive season and what for you makes a perfect Christmas Day?
A This festive season, I will be in Australia so I am looking forward to seeing what a warm sunny Christmas is like. I am sure I will be amazed by the weather and being outdoors on what is traditionally a time when we are rugged up!
Dr Mira Mikhail

Q How do you look back on how 2024 has gone?
A It has been a year of learning and development. I have enjoyed working developing my skills in aesthetics, learning new techniques with polynucleotides and developing my passion for teaching aesthetics.
Q What has been introduced this year that has been particularly interesting in your field of expertise?
A The most exciting concept this year has been that of “pre-juvenation”. This is a concept of seeking preventative treatments to maintain one’s beauty rather than waiting for ageing to occur. It combines excellent skincare regimens as well as small non surgical techniques to gently enhance our features.
Q What are you looking forward to most in 2025?
A I am looking forward to further developing my teaching and working with colleagues in the aesthetic fields to give patients the best experience possible.
Q Will you be having much time o over the festive season and what for you makes a perfect Christmas Day?
A I am looking forward to spending time with my family and close friends over this period. The best Christmas Days are filled with family, food and laughter.

Q What has been introduced this year that has been particularly interesting in your field of expertise?
A This year has been the year of the injectable collagen stimulator. Whilst traditional dermal fillers will always have their role in volume replacement, patients are now looking for a more sophisticated, natural and bespoke approach to their skin health. Products like polynucleotides, which stimulate fibroblasts and so boost collagen without pu ness, have become very popular – especially for the under eye area. I would go so far as to say that polynucleotides are now the first product I think about when addressing eye concerns.
HarmonyCa, a combination filler and collagen stimulator, is a game changer. It provides both instant volume as well
as longer term improvements. Patients look better 3 to 6 months later as new collagen is produced. Traditional dermal fillers aren’t able to deliver this.
Q What are you looking forward to in 2025?
A This year I’ve really become a believer in using multiple modalities to address skin concerns. When we look at ourselves we mostly focus on what’s on the surface, but our skin has several layers and it is supported by fat and connective tissue, muscle and our underlying bone structure. We need to address all of these to maintain a healthy appearance. I can’t wait to introduce this multilevel approach to my patients.
Q Will you be having much time o over the festive season and what for you makes a perfect Christmas Day?
A I’m originally from Trinidad and Tobago and I’m lucky enough to be able to go back at Christmas to spend the season with my extended family. Christmas is the best time to visit the Caribbean – the weather is mild, the food is plentiful and the people are merry.

SCHOOL : Head, Wellington College Prep School
WEBSITE : wellingtoncollegeprep.org.uk
Q How would you sum up Wellington College Prep’s 2024?
A Fast paced, action-packed and joyful! It was the year in which Eagle House – having been owned by Wellington College since 1968 –became Wellington College Prep. We had a very positive ISI inspection report, we welcomed a record number of new pupils to the school back in September and, of course, we enjoyed watching every child grow in so many di erent ways.
Q Personally, what has been the high point for you?
A Turning the vision of our Head of Pastoral Care into reality. She planned a well-being hub with dedicated sta at the heart of our school. It was to o er mental health first aid, counselling and coaching to any child. Now in full operation, it has been genuinely transformational, and it touches the lives of every child daily. Next step is to build a brand new space for the hub.
Q Has there been one moment that for you really shows what your school is all about?
A On ‘Make A Di erence Day’ I watched children from ages 5 to 13 in small mixed-age groups doing di erent ‘bravery’ challenges around the school. These ranged from eating insects, to holding snakes with so much in between. It was special to see all children stretching themselves and to see the older children guiding and encouraging the younger ones.
Q What are you looking forward to doing over the Christmas break?
A Some bracing walks and long runs along the beach in Anglesey. Hopefully the weather will be cold and festive!
Q What does 2025 hold in store?
A Lots more innovation, all focused on giving parents more data and information about the development of their child academically but, crucially, also in terms of character development. We will continue to develop our AI curriculum and seek to take greater and greater advantage of our close ties with Wellington College. This will be in use of facilities, shared sports coaching and work on curriculum – it is really exciting!

SCHOOL : Head, Herries School

Q How would you sum up Herries’ 2024?
A Another great year providing children with as many possibilities to succeed academically, as well as outside the classroom in areas such as music, sport, art and drama. The school continues to go from strength to strength and I’m lucky to have a fantastic team who work hard each day to ensure the best outcomes for all our children.
Q Personally, what has been the high point for you?
A Being recognised for our excellent sports provision through a nomination for the ISA Award for Outstanding Sport. We work incredibly hard to provide opportunities for our children and have had local and national success in a number of sports.
Q Has there been one moment that for you really shows what your school is all about?
A One moment that truly encapsulates what Herries Prep School is all about happened during the Cookham Regatta, where our Herries Mermaids team secured victory in the Dragon Boat race. This event wasn’t just about winning; it showcased the collaborative spirit, determination, and community ethos that define our school.
The teamwork displayed by the Mermaids, combined with the support from everyone involved, perfectly highlighted our commitment to our Herries Values: Happiness, Enthusiasm, Respect, Resilience, Independence, Excellence and Sincerity.
Q What are you looking forward to doing over the Christmas break?
A I’m looking forward to spending quality time with my family. The holiday season is such a special opportunity to create memories together – whether that’s decorating the tree, enjoying festive outings, or simply relaxing at home with good food and laughter. I’m also planning to take some time to reflect on the term’s achievements at Herries and think ahead to the new year. Of course, I’ll be making space to recharge with a good book or two and perhaps some long walks

to enjoy the winter scenery. It’s all about striking a balance between rest, family, and a bit of planning for the exciting times ahead!
Q What does 2025 hold in store?
A It promises to be an exciting year filled with opportunities for growth and achievement at Herries Prep. We’re looking forward to building on the successes of 2024, from academic progress to our thriving extracurricular programs. One key focus will be continuing to nurture a supportive and inspiring environment where every child can flourish. We’re also planning some exciting events to strengthen our school community and further develop our innovative curriculum, ensuring it remains engaging and future-focused.
On a personal note, 2025 will also be a time to explore new opportunities and challenges, especially as I consider how I can continue to grow as an educator and leader. It’s shaping up to be a year full of potential, and I’m looking forward to seeing what unfolds.

SCHOOL : Head, Upton House WEBSITE : uptonhouse.org.uk
Q Why were you inspired to work in education?
A With an English Literature degree, a love of the theatre, books, poetry and music, the classroom called! Leading schools and creating opportunities for children is my passion and a privilege. I thoroughly enjoy my time in the classroom. After teaching in Cardi for several years I moved into school leadership in Esher, Surrey, creating a new school from Reception upwards. An exciting opportunity! My first Headship then called in Cobham, Surrey, a beautiful school on the village green. Currently I am leading Upton House School in Windsor. Upton is a firm part of the Windsor community and has been since 1936. Upton House is the Jewel in the Windsor crown.
Q What do you look to o er at Upton House?
A Upton brings together creativity, innovation, fun and a passion for
showcasing and developing every child. It is a personal journey for each child and one they cannot repeat. Each deserves the very best teaching and opportunities, and also the very best care. Introducing the children to skills and activities where they can develop their leadership skills is also a key part of my work. From Careers Fairs organised by the children, to broadcasting, debating and presenting opportunities, learning to be a leader is a focus at Upton House. As a through school from 2 years to 11 years, the children learn from their peers, with mentors and strong role models.
The most important skill of any leader is kindness. We can often have di cult decisions to make daily, but kindness and compassion is at the heart.
Q What challenges lies ahead?
A Currently with so much discontent in the world around us, it becomes harder to define great role models for our children. As a mum of three children, I feel that challenge. Schools and parents working together must provide that leadership, with compassion and kindness. Wishing you all a wonderful Christmas!

Q How would you sum up Heathfield School’s 2024?
A It has been a spectacular year for Heathfield as we have celebrated our 125th anniversary. There have been many highlights throughout this special year, most notably our excellent GCSE and A-level results alongside the multiple successes the students have achieved across our diverse range of co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. These include everything from national sporting successes to Duke of Edinburgh, multiple Art competitions success, LAMDA and performing arts. Importantly, participation by all students is the usual way of life, involving everyone in our community. New bus routes from London mean Heathfield is now a fantastic option for London families looking for something di erent to London day schools.
Q Personally, what has been the high point for you?
A I have particularly enjoyed moments when the whole school community has come together for events such as our production of Beauty and the Beast earlier this year and our 125 Celebration dinner which took place in November. The high points for me every year are the occasions where students achieve more than they ever thought was possible. The lightbulb moments when they realise they are doing it are
incredibly special, whether academically or in art, sport, drama or music. This year’s student-led ‘Caritas Ball’ was an excellent example this year, working in partnership with local and national charities to raise awareness and support.
Q Has there been one moment that for you really shows what your school is all about?
A It would have to be our 125 Celebration dinner which brought together alumnae, parents, sta and current students to celebrate all that is ‘Heathfield’ and how the school has evolved and developed over the past 125 years.
Q What are you looking forward to doing over the Christmas break?
A Christmas is all about family, and I am looking forward to having my daughter home from university and the family being all together.
Q What does 2025 hold in store?
A We will be finalising the next phases of our strategic plan. In addition, our Innovation Hub, new in 2024, will be developed further to include AI, VR and robotics. All of this is about the development of our students in every sense, from within the classroom to the wider skills they will need in the world, to their self-belief, and the enabling of our sta to ensure they are best placed to enable our students to thrive.
The recent £1.5m award for bursaries from Heathfield alumna Julia Rausing’s Trust has enabled us to extend our bursary provision for our 2025 applicants.

Q Has there been one moment in 2024 that, for you, really shows what your school is all about?
A The strength of community at St George’s is palpable and I often speak to the girls about being stronger together than as individuals. A focus area in our 2023 centenary year was developing our philanthropic work within our local community. St George’s girls have long been volunteering in the local area, including in local primary schools and care homes, and we actively encourage the local community to share in the use of our facilities.
Inspired by King Charles’ Coronation Big Help Out, I was keen to spotlight the power of individuals giving of their time, this costs nothing after all. We launched our ‘SGA Help Out’ that year and it is now a much anticipated annual event. The 2nd July 2024 saw all our pupils and sta lead an enormous range of voluntary activities both on site and in the local area including running a sports day for 150 Year 5 pupils on our fields, musical performances and tea for our care home visitors, sorting supplies at the local baby bank, weeding a churchyard, preparing for a village fête, helping the catering team in the kitchens and many more. There was a tangible sense of joy at these events
SARAH ROLLINGS
celebrating the power of human connection and a shared purpose and I could not have been more proud of our girls and sta who are all now looking forward to the next one.
Q What are you looking forward to in 2025?
A After what will be nine years as Head, and seven years as a St George’s parent, I will be leaving the school next summer to take up a new role in London. I will be both a proud parent and proud Head on the last day of the year when my daughter and all her friends, who I’ve watched grow into the sparky, diverse and impressive young women they now are, leave the school. As they fly the nest to take their places at university, on gap years or in the workplace it will be very special to be leaving this wonderful community together. Whilst also tinged with sadness, I am very proud of the school that I will be passing on to the next lucky Head.

SCHOOL : Head, St George's School Windsor Castle WEBSITE : stgwindsor.org
Q How would you sum up St George’s School Windsor Castle’s 2024?
A Creative, warm and futureready in the most amazing historical and unique setting.
Q Personally, what has been the high point for you?
A My highlight was definitely moving to Windsor in September to become the Head of St George’s School Windsor Castle. Since then, I have thoroughly enjoyed spending time getting to know the students, sta and parents, alongside the wider St George’s community. Including being installed as ‘Master of Grammar’ in St George’s Chapel!
Q Has there been one moment that for you really shows what your school is all about?
A Not one moment: the school is all about the children and the holistic education we provide – every day is about them, and I love spending time with them in di erent contexts,
whether this is in class, outside, in the choir, on the sports pitches, doing DT, having fun with the boarders out of class, seeing them perform in concerts, on stage, or simply talking to them about their interests or what they love most about our wonderful school.
Q Describe your perfect Christmas Day…
A My perfect day is about to happen this year with my first Christmas in Windsor – a midnight carol service and Christmas Day extended to include our choristers and their families for Christmas Lunch. All we need is some snow!
Q What are you looking forward to in 2025?
A In my first year, everything is new and exciting – there is a new treat with every turn of the calendar. Being so integrated with the castle community is very special too, and provides so many opportunities for students and sta that just aren’t possible elsewhere. I am really looking forward to continuing to embed everything that is already excellent about the school, as well as leading its further evolution to meet the changing needs of our children for the future.

Victoria Potter
BUSINESS : Founder, Victoria Potter VPA
WEBSITE : victoriapotter.co.uk
Q What inspired you to launch your business?
A I was inspired to start my business because I wanted more control over my time and the ability to prioritise my family, especially my children. The structure of a traditional job made me feel like I was missing out on precious moments. By launching my own business, I gained the flexibility to be present for my family whilst building something that aligns with my passions and values. It was about creating a life where I could meet some amazing people, work on my own terms and truly enjoy the freedom that I had never previously realised was possible.
Q How do your services work?
A I run a Virtual Personal Assistant business specialising in executive support for CEOs, founders and leaders across all sectors. What sets us apart is our commitment to making each client feel as though they’re our only client, providing the experience of having an experienced, full-time, dedicated EA, at a fraction of the cost. What makes us special is that we’re deeply invested in our clients' success and constantly seek ways to add value to their business. It’s more than a
job - it’s a passion. We o er flexible hours to suit our clients' needs, with packages starting at just five hours per week, giving them back the time to do more of what they love.
Q What have been your working highlights in 2024?
A It has been a fantastic year, both personally and professionally. I've had the privilege of working with some incredibly influential people, amazing clients and on many exciting projects. I’m pleased to say that our client base has grown, with partners who share our values. I've also been honoured with recognition at the Strategic PA Network Awards.
Q What are you looking forward to in 2025?
A I’m excited to see both mine and my clients business’ continue to grow. One of my core aims is to rebuild confidence and empower other women, especially with those returning to work. As such, I am looking to further work with and mentor mums, so that they too can return to work and find that important work / life balance. It will be a year of embracing new opportunities, expanding my horizons, and continuing to build a life that truly reflects our values and goals. The possibilities ahead feel inspiring.

SCHOOL : Head, Pangbourne College
WEBSITE : pangbourne.com
Q How would you sum up Pangbourne College’s 2024?
A Golden. We have put an awful lot of work into our teacher development and expertise programmes, partnering up with some of the leading Multi-Academy Trusts in the country, to ensure we have the best trained teachers in the sector. We are putting the finishing touches on our adventure learning programmes and should have our high ropes course, ground-based problem solving and low ropes course, and our assault course ready for January 2025. This is a core part of our o er and Pangbournians are not afraid to try new things, like to figure things out, and approach every situation with a positive mindset.
Q Personally, what has been the high point for you?
A Completing my first term as Head. It is a huge privilege to be the Head at Pangbourne and help the school continue its journey. Seeing the students hard at work
VICTORIA POTTER
in classrooms, competing in sports and working together in the outdoors fills me with hope for the future.
Q Has there been one moment that for you really shows what your school is all about?
A The thing that impresses me most about Pangbourne is the relaxed confidence and ambition of the students. Nothing makes me happier than when I receive an email from a student requesting to meet with me and talk about an aspect of the College they want to improve. It is a real skill to do this and takes courage and maturity. These meetings demonstrate the true power of a Pangbourne education.
Q What are you looking forward to doing over the Christmas break?
A Relaxing with my family and enjoying the Christmas Day service in the Falkland Islands Memorial Chapel. It is a special building and a wonderful place to celebrate. I may also get a few days away climbing, which is always special.
Q What does 2025 hold in store?
A More of the same. I'm excited for the future.
James Dahl
SCHOOL : Head, Wellington College WEBSITE : wellingtoncollege.org.uk
Q How would you sum up Wellington College’s 2024?
A Incredibly enjoyable and, if not too immodest to say, highly successful. Our percentage of 9s at GCSE and A* grades at A-level were ‘best ever’, but we’ve also managed to maintain the quality of sport (28 teams or individuals competed nationally) and Performing Arts (the annual musical, Les Misérables, won a national award). Most importantly, our students remain a joy to live, learn and work alongside. I have the best job in the world!
Q Personally, what has been the high point for you?
A Literally and metaphorically, the high point was the College Prefects and I climbing the Yorkshire Three Peaks (a 24miles/38.6km round trip route, and includes 1585m/5200ft of ascent, taking in the peaks of Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough) in 12 hours in October. We raised £30,000 for a teenage cancer charity – a cause that is very close to our hearts currently – and it was the most amazing day of camaraderie, companionship and sheer physical and mental resilience. I could barely walk afterwards, but I’ll never forget the experience.
Q Has there been one moment that for you really shows what your school is all about?
A At our House Dance competition, the entire student body was in our theatre, cheering every performance –girls and boys, large group and small. At the end, as the judges deliberated, the Prefects led a whole-school ‘Just Dance’ – 1,000 pupils of all ages, genders and personalities dancing together. There’s footage on my @ Welly_Master Instagram account. The moment summed up our sense of community, student leadership, and insatiable sense of fun perfectly. No-one was ‘too cool’ to get involved and I love that about Wellington.
Q What are you looking forward to doing over the upcoming Christmas break?
A We have a house in Sussex in a tiny village with a wonderful community. I am looking forward to reconnecting with friends, walks with the dog on the South Downs, and spending time with my wife and daughter.
Q What does 2025 hold in store?
A It is the 50th anniversary of Wellington as a co-educational school. Lots of events are planned, but I am most excited that the College’s student body will be 50/50 boys/ girls for the first time in Wellington’s history. It’s almost as if we planned it!

Art on a PLATE
Aidan Miller is behind one of Windsor’s most eclectic restaurants, which showcases a whole host of Mediterranean flavours. Absolutely visits to find out more
Chef Aidan Miller, the mastermind behind Plate No. 6 in Windsor, seamlessly blends his culinary expertise with an artistic vision, creating not just meals but edible masterpieces. With nearly 20 years of experience, Aidan has cultivated a deep understanding of ingredients, mastering how they behave and transform under di erent conditions. His dual role as a chef and food stylist allows him to approach cooking as both a craft and an art form, where the visual presentation is as meticulously curated as the flavours. Plate No. 6, nestled in a quaint cobbled lane in the heart of Windsor, o ers a culinary journey through the Mediterranean Basin, featuring dishes inspired by the diverse cuisines of Spain,
Turkey, France, Morocco, Italy, Greece, and Lebanon. The restaurant’s alfresco dining area, with stunning views of Windsor Castle, provides the perfect backdrop for Aidan’s artfully plated tapas, making each dish a feast for the eyes and the palate. Here, Aidan invites Absolutely into Plate No. 6 to discuss his background, love of ingredients and what we can expect to enjoy at the restaurant this winter.
Q When did you first realise you had a knack for cooking?
A Around the age of 10/11 I became interested in cooking, but it wasn’t until a little later around 13/14 when I realised I wanted to become better at it and possibly make it my career.
Q Were you always interested in digging a little deeper into ingredients?
A Yes, I’ve always wanted to dive deeper
“I want to find out why ingredients behave the way they do”
into my interests whatever they may be. So naturally after choosing to be a chef I wanted to find out why ingredients behave the way they do under di erent conditions to satisfy my curiosity and become better at what I do.
Q What was your first job in the food industry and how do you look back on it?
A My first proper chef job after catering college was chef de partie at the then Riverhouse restaurant in Windsor. Looking back, it was the first opportunity to learn the importance of maintaining a section to the same standard as the other more experienced chefs. As this is something you don’t really learn in college and considering how terribly busy it used to get in the summer, I had to learn quickly and never forgot the importance of it. Making mistakes hit so hard; whether sending out a dish with or without an ingredient it should/should not have or mistakenly destroying a whole chocolate, orange and passionfruit tart (which took two

days to make). I learnt to be methodical, careful and have a logical approach to service and during mise en place.
Q Has there been one place or chef you have worked with who has influenced you the most?
A Kanda san from an izakaya in Okinawa named Hariyun was definitely influential in the way I manage a kitchen. He indirectly taught me how to be firm, fair and have fun whilst still gaining the respect from your brigade.
Q Why is Windsor perfect for Plate No. 6?
A There are not many restaurants here (if any) o ering modern Mediterranean
“I hope to o er dishes that taste as good as they look. Food styling is a passion of mine”
food which encompass the diverse cuisines from the many countries that share the Med on one menu.
Q Why are you keen on an artistic approach to the food you create?
A I enjoy being creative and food styling is another passion of mine, so I understand the importance of good-looking food. I hope to o er dishes that taste as good as they look. Diners often take pictures of good-looking food even before they’ve tasted it for the first time. If it meets or exceeds the expectations of the diner it will certainly be shared amongst their social circle and ultimately help the restaurant.
Q What do you look to o er with the menus at Plate No. 6?
A Something di erent from the norm, a showcase of Mediterranean produce, well balanced flavours and value.
Q Are there particular dishes or ingredients that you are really loving right now – and if so why?
A I’ve always loved the triple cooked patatas bravas since starting here. It seems so simple, but the three elements of the dish need to be prepared carefully for it to be at its best. The bravas sauce needs to be bursting with umami and super smooth so it properly coats the triple cooked maris piper potatoes, which have been slightly crushed before the final cook for maximum surface area
and crispiness. Then finally the aioli that is always made in house with sherry vinegar and not too much garlic, but enough to add something to the dish. I really could go on.
Q What kind of experience are you ultimately looking to o er at Plate No. 6?
A I would like to o er more of a high-end experience for our diners whilst still giving value in the future. For a restaurant of this size, I think it would make sense as I would prefer our guests to take their time and enjoy what we have to o er as opposed to rushing through their meal to turn over tables. Now we are making sure to stay consistent so new and returning guests feel confident that whatever is on the menu will be better than good. It would be nice to be an independent restaurant worthy of a detour in a town of chains and over-priced establishments.
Q Any special festive plans coming up?
A There will be a few festive additions to the menu coming soon. The Christmas we know here, and the ones celebrated around the Med, are quite di erent so I hope to o er some dishes that are familiar to us here in the UK, but using ingredients and techniques from the Mediterranean to stay within the style of the restaurant. Such as Balsamic and honey glazed pigs in blankets, grilled halloumi with roasted fig and smoked almonds to name a couple.

EMBRACING TRADITION
Why turkey dinner is synonymous with Christmas – and why Copas will ensure the perfect meal
For many families across the UK, Christmas simply wouldn’t be Christmas without a turkey dinner.
The scent of a beautifully roasted bird, the gathering of loved ones, and the joy of sharing a meal together have become integral to the holiday season.
From its flavour to its iconic place on the festive table, turkey is more than just a meal: it’s a symbol of Christmas itself.
Although it wasn’t always the British holiday staple, by the Victorian era, turkey
had become a Christmas favourite, in part thanks to Charles Dickens choosing it as a symbol of Scrooge’s redemption in A Christmas Carol. By then, it had become a treat associated with the best of what Christmas had to o er: a feast that was generous, delicious, and special. Today, turkey is still the centrepiece of holiday celebrations. But what is it that makes turkey such a timeless choice? Perhaps it’s the festive scale of it – perfect for carving and sharing
among family and friends. Turkey’s mild yet rich flavour complements the season’s accompaniments, from roasted vegetables to cranberry sauce, bread sauce and stu ng, bringing together the best flavours of winter.
Beyond taste and tradition, the modern appeal of turkey also lies in its versatility and high nutritional value. It’s rich in protein, lower in fat than many red meats, and packed with essential nutrients like iron, zinc, and B vitamins. Families today appreciate it as a deliciously festive yet health-conscious choice that balances indulgence with nutrition.
At Copas Traditional Turkeys, they’ve taken the experience a step further by making sure every bird is raised to the highest welfare standards. Their free-range turkeys are raised in fields in Berkshire, allowed to mature naturally, hand-plucked and game hung to ensure the best possible taste and texture. This attention to quality means that every bite embodies the care and tradition behind it, creating a meal that’s truly worthy of the holiday season.
This Christmas, as you gather around the table, remember that a turkey dinner is about more than food; it’s a reminder of the joy, warmth, and tradition that make the holidays so special. After all, turkey dinner is more than just a meal – it’s the very essence of Christmas.
Order your Christmas turkey now on the Copas website for home delivery, for pick up at their farm in Cookham or for collection at one of their Click & Collect partners in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, London, Oxfordshire, Hertfordshire and Surrey.

RISING TO THE CHALLENGE
Rennie
It has been a tricky year for hospices in the UK. A national funding crisis and sta cuts in some areas have put added strain on resources and the ability of hospices to deliver services to the 300,000 patients that require care each year.
With the support of its communities, local charity Rennie Grove Peace Hospice Care has thrived, despite the challenges facing the sector, in its first year as a merged organisation. Since merging in 2023 Rennie Grove Peace has delivered on its ambitions to serve communities in Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire with vital hospice care while educating local people about what the organisation does and the support it o ers.
In the last financial year, Rennie Grove Peace supported over 4,500 patients and facilitated more than 2,000 bereavement listening and talking therapy sessions. The charity also conducted almost 50,000 community visits and calls to patients in their own homes.
This year the local community has once again stepped up in support of the charity – raising funds in a variety of di erent ways. Steve Moore, a London Fire Brigade firefighter who lives in Aylesbury, undertook ‘The Great Fire of London Run’ in May. He ran between all 102 London Fire Brigade stations, raising £3,864 – split between Rennie Grove Peace and The Firefighters Charity.
In July, Prestwood resident, Chris Everitt, took on the National 3 Peaks Challenge to thank the charity for the care his mother, Caroline, received when she was living with a brain tumour. The charity’s own annual Chilterns 3 Peaks Challenge celebrated its 15th anniversary this September with 1,000 walkers participating in the milestone event, raising over £78,000.
Local movement coach, Isaac Hay has recently set out on a year-long challenge to try his hand at 100 sports. The inspiration for the challenge came from
Grove Peace Hospice Care celebrates
a successful 2024
his work as a movement coach where he noticed that a big barrier to people getting involved in new sports or physical activity is a lack of confidence or fear of the unknown. He is using the challenge to fundraise for Rennie Grove Peace after the charity supported his family.

Emma J Shipley creates magical murals often with a nod to nature and the animal kingdom
Buckinghamshire-born interior homeware designer, Emma J Shipley, recently launched her latest collection of incredible wallpaper murals. Created in collaboration with Clarke & Clarke, the scale of these murals will transform your walls into an immersive work of art.
Every Emma J Shipley print begins life as an intricately hand-drawn design. Working in pencil, with reference photography from her adventures, Emma’s process is organic, slowly transferring her vision from imagination to paper. Featuring resplendent Quetzals, mythical creatures and African wildlife, these stunning designs will transport you to the fantastical Highlands, enchanted cloud forests and the wild plains of Emma’s imagination. Here, she tells Absolutely more about her magical designs.
Q Did you have a creative upbringing?
A I enjoyed drawing and painting from a young age and always loved art at school. My family definitely encouraged me to pursue it – I would always be asking for art materials for birthdays and Christmases and loved to draw my pet cat!
Q Did you realise quite early that art and design would be the career for you?
A I didn’t necessarily know it would be a career, although I do remember saying I wanted to be an artist when I grew up! I went to Challoner’s High School and I enjoyed ‘academic’ subjects too, so I could have gone down that route – but ultimately I enjoyed art and design more.
Q What inspired you to launch your own brand?
A I felt I had something original to offer in terms of my style of drawing and design. I had quite a lot of other jobs, and also realised I enjoy being in a leadership role, problem solving and using my initiative, all of which is needed in running a business.
Q What were your early creations and how do you look back on them?
A I studied an MA at the Royal College of Art, with the aim of launching my brand on graduating. Some of the designs I created during that time are still in my collection today, such as Amazon and Silverback, and are still some of my favourite creations! I launched the brand with silk scarves back in 2012, as they were pieces that were a beautiful blank canvas for my artwork, and relatively easy to have produced in the UK. I have one of those original collection scarves framed on my wall, which is a nice reminder of where it all started.
Q Have you evolved much since 2012?
A I think the signature style I created is still clear and recognisable in all of my designs, but I’ve definitely evolved in a lot of ways. The original designs were quite often very limited in colour, being just one or two colours, to show off the drawing. Over the years I’ve explored colour hugely, and now most of my favourite designs are multicoloured and vibrant. The other big evolution has been in the types of product I’m creating. I first branched out from scarves with cushions, followed by fabric and

wallpaper. We now have a whole collection of interior and lifestyle products adorned in my designs, always making sure we uphold the quality, sustainability and craft the brand has become known for.
Q Tell us about your inspirations…
A Each design is inspired by a different place, usually from a trip I’ve been on. My most recent design ‘Quetzal’ was inspired by the cloud forest in Costa Rica and the incredible resplendent quetzal bird I saw there. I take photographs and do sketches, then once back home I add other inspiration that I’m interested in at that moment, which could be from fantasy literature and films, artists or myths and legends.
Q How do you like to work?
A Once I’ve brought together my research and inspiration, I start sketching my ideas for compositions. If it’s a repeat design, it’s really important to plan the repeat at this stage so that the design fits together once fully drawn. I then start working large scale in pencil on paper, on the final artwork. I build up the drawing, starting lightly to begin with, and adding lots of details as I go. I then scan the drawings and add colour digitally, so they can be printed onto fabric, or onto any of my other products such as fine china.
Q Do you think there is a typical Emma J Shipley look?
A Yes it’s definitely distinctive and something I’ve become known for – I would describe it as fantastical, colourful and other-worldly.
Q What can you tell us about your new collaboration with Clarke & Clarke?
A I’ve worked with Clarke & Clarke for the last few years on my fabric and wallpaper collections. It’s great to work with a British company who share my values and produce to such a high quality in the UK. I’ve been working away for the last 18 months or so on a brand new collection that I’m really excited about, which will be coming in early 2025.
Q What have been some of your most popular homeware creations?
A Cushions are always popular, I think because it’s a really easy way of adding colour and pattern into a space – and you can never have too many! Our bedding collections also do really well – we have a new design coming this autumn. Wallpaper is also consistently popular, for those who want the whole room maximalist transformation. We recently launched a collection of large scale wallpaper murals which have been going down a storm – they make a bold statement and really transform a space.
Q How would you describe your own design style at home?
A Naturally, I have lots of my own designs. I like an eclectic style, but keep things elevated by having quite limited colour palettes in each room. It’s easy to do this if you start with a print (such as wallpaper, or a cushion), and pull out colours from the print for your scheme. In some rooms I have plain painted walls, accessorised with lots of colourful cushions, which in other rooms I’ve gone for full wallpaper, keeping the accessories more minimal. I also like being surrounded by meaningful objects – this might be a shelf arranged with favourite books and objects that have a personal meaning, or framed drawings from my travels.
Q What’s next for you?
A I’m launching a new design this winter and I’m so excited to reveal it, it might be my favourite design I’ve created. We’ll be launching the design in cushions, art prints, scarves and more. We also have a new bedding collection coming, and some other exciting new launches for Christmas. Early next year my new fabric and wallpaper collection with Clarke & Clarke will be coming out, so it’s a really busy and exciting time for me and the brand.

Winter wellness at home: elevate your well-being with an indoor pool
As winter sets in and the days grow shorter, the urge to retreat into the cosy confines of our homes becomes stronger. The chilly weather can limit outdoor activities; however, this season also presents a unique opportunity to focus on wellness and self-care. What better way to enhance your well-being than with an indoor pool? Transforming your home into a winter wellness retreat can rejuvenate your mind and body, allowing you to embrace the festive season while promoting a healthy lifestyle.
Indoor pools are not merely luxurious amenities but sanctuaries offering numerous health benefits. Regular swimming can provide an excellent cardiovascular workout, improving heart health and boosting circulation. As the temperatures drop, many people may become less active, which can lead to feelings of lethargy and even seasonal depression. An indoor pool allows you to maintain a consistent exercise routine, ensuring you stay physically fit and mentally sharp throughout the winter.
Moreover, the act of swimming itself is a powerful stress reliever. The rhythmic nature of swimming can be meditative, allowing you to clear your mind and focus on the present moment. Immersing yourself in warm water can create a soothing environment that helps to alleviate anxiety and tension, making it an ideal way to unwind after a long day. Consider integrating additional elements into your indoor pool environment to enhance a serene atmosphere that encourages relaxation and rejuvenation. Adding a sauna or steam room can further elevate your self-care experience. These features promote relaxation, detoxification and improved respiratory health.
In addition to the physical and mental benefits, investing in an indoor pool can signifi cantly enhance your quality of life. It offers you the luxury of year-round swimming, free from the constraints of unpredictable weather, providing an oasis of calm away from your busy life in the comfort of your own home.
As the colder months approach, we must rethink how we care for ourselves. By creating a winter wellness retreat at home with an indoor pool, you’re not just enhancing your lifestyle, but investing in your health and happiness. Origin understands the importance of such spaces and is dedicated to bringing your vision to life. Embrace the season and make your indoor pool the centre of your winter wellness journey.
OLD ONES ARE
BEST
Absolutely heads inside a beautifully presented family home with equestrian facilities set amongst six acres of landscaped grounds
The Old House is a well appointed country home which occupies a private position in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with splendid rural views. The house has a wonderful balance of charming features including exposed timbers and inglenook fireplaces in the older part of the house, along with spacious character and natural light in the more recent additions. The property has benefitted from an extensive refurbishment and renovation in 2021-22 including reglazing, replacement roofing and updating to kitchen and living spaces.
The property dates from the 17th century with later additions. The oldest part of the house was built of local brick and flint on a chalk base between 1600 and 1640 and was owned from 1830 by Merton College, Oxford. Originally three thatched farm cottages, the College converted the cottages into one house after recognising the exceptional beauty of the location. The Old House was sold by the College at auction in 1945. Today, the accommodation flows effortlessly across two floors and is well laid out for entertaining and family living. There is a mix of formal entertaining rooms and family living space.
The John Lewis of Hungerford kitchen was fitted in 2022 and opens into a dining and separate cocktail area, each space enjoying bi folding doors onto the south-facing terrace.
The principal bedroom suite with dressing area has a glass balcony enjoying views across the gardens and a paddock, as well as a leisure room, currently utilised as a gym with separate access. There are four further bedrooms, all with fine views and three further bathrooms.
The property is approached by way of a private road leading from Brimmers Road to The Old House and one other property. Double electric gates open to a private driveway leading through the landscaped grounds up to the main house with a split to the equestrian facilities and outbuildings.
There are mature landscaped gardens peppered with a mixture of distinctive mature trees including copper beech, mulberry, oak and many fruit trees. There are various sitting areas with wonderful views, lawns, a productive orchard and vegetable cages. Much of the planted areas benefit from irrigation and are designed to be low maintenance. There are two barns extending to over 3,000 square feet arranged in a courtyard. They are suitable for a range of uses including equestrian, office space, spacious workshops, storage or secure garaging. The property has excellent equestrian facilities including stabling, three individual paddocks with post and rail fencing, a 24m x 44m partially lit manège with a sand and fibre surface which has been recently refurbished and direct access on to the bridleway network.
The land extends to about 6.24 acres attracting a variety of wildlife and includes a private copse and wild meadow walk around the perimeter of the property.
“The property is well located to take full advantage of the Chilterns”
The Old House occupies a private and rural position while being less than one mile from the charming town of Princes Risborough, close to the Hampden and Chequers Estates. The property is well located to take full advantage of the beautiful Chilterns countryside, providing a wealth of opportunities for walking, riding and cycling.
The popular market town of Princes Risborough has an excellent range of shops, cafes, doctors, dentists and a M&S supermarket. There is a mainline train service to London Marylebone providing a fast and frequent service (from about 30 minutes). The M40 motorway (J4 and J5) gives easy access to London and the M25 and M40 motorways and Heathrow International Airport are within 29 miles.
The historic market town of Thame also provides a further range of shops and amenities. Sporting facilities nearby include Ellesborough and Princes Risborough golf clubs, The Oxfordshire Golf Hotel and Spa, as well as several tennis clubs within easy reach.
Equestrian activities are well supported locally, including specialist facilities at Widmer Equestrian Centre and Attington Stud amongst others, and local pony club and riding club activities.
Aylesbury Waterside Theatre has a dynamic schedule of West End productions, comedians and
children’s shows. The Garsington Opera is about nine miles away, hosting events throughout the summer. Buckinghamshire is renowned for its choice and standard of schooling, both within the state and private sector, as the county is one of the last to maintain the traditional grammar school system. These include the Royal Grammar School in High Wycombe and Aylesbury Grammar School for boys as well as Wycombe High School and Aylesbury High School for girls. Nearby preparatory schools include The Griffin, The Beacon, Gateway School, Pipers Corner, Godstowe Preparatory and Ashfold School. Pipers Corner and Wycombe Abbey offer secondary independent education in addition to the excellent choice offered by the Oxford schools which are accessible via the direct train service. Princes Risborough has a number of nursery and primary schools in addition to a secondary school.
The Old House, Brimmers Road, Princes Risborough is on the market with Savills for £3,000,000. For more information, contact Savills Beaconsfield on 01494 731950 or visit savills.co.uk

Absolutely explores our Kitchen of the Month: The Monolith Kitchen by Extreme
In the world of super-prime interiors, where homes are expressions of individuality, Extreme stands at the forefront. Founded in 1993, Extreme has been recognised for its custom kitchen and furniture design approach, offering clients complete freedom and design without limits.
Extreme designs kitchens and furniture for some of the UK's most architecturally interesting homes; they can be new with bold, sharp lines that stretch modern ways of working to the limit or classical, restoring our British heritage. Whichever it may be, homes of this calibre demand architectural kitchen designs that reflect their individuality and custom nature. One such project is The Monolith Kitchen for a newly built home in London, which was nominated for two prestigious global design awards.
The Monolith Kitchen is more than just a culinary workspace; it is a sculptural centrepiece that mirrors the home's unique and ambitious architecture. The residence is a truly individual home, defined by bold structural elements, including poured concrete, monolithic columns, and organic metal forms. Inspired by these structural elements, Extreme's designers created a kitchen with a strong visual identity that seamlessly integrates with the home's overall aesthetic.
At the heart of The Monolith Kitchen is a commanding five-metre island clad in black granite. With a unique abstract geometric form, the island resembles a sculptural installation as much as a functional surface, blurring the line between art and utility. The textured copper breakfast bar and individually sourced Jade Onyx feature panel bring organic warmth to the
space, with LED backlighting illuminating the onyx to reveal its translucent beauty. The success of Extreme's designs lies in the masterful harmony of design and function. Beyond the unique design features and sculptural impact of each kitchen are thoughtful design elements and considered details that ensure every space is as functional as it is visually stunning. Despite their bold aesthetics and artistry, these kitchens serve beautifully as family hubs, spaces for seamless entertaining, and everyday culinary tasks.
The Monolith Kitchen by Extreme demonstrates what custom kitchen design can achieve. It's a space where architectural cues, sculptural forms, and high-quality materials combine to create an environment that feels as much like an art installation as a kitchen. From the material selection to the geometric form of the island,
The success of Extreme's designs lies in the masterful harmony of design and function
the kitchen conveys the same spirit as the home: bold, distinctive, and individual.
For clients who desire a kitchen that is entirely their own, a space crafted from the ground up to echo the architecture and character of their home, Extreme offers the freedom to make that vision a reality. An Extreme kitchen isn't just a place to cook; it's a space that tells a story, a one-of-a-kind blend of creativity, engineering, and design innovation. If you seek design freedom matched with extraordinary craftsmanship, contact the designers at Extreme in Buckinghamshire, Berkshire or London and discover the incredible opportunities for your project.
The kitchen truly is the heart of the home at Christmas – but what trends can we expect to see in 2025? Two companies show the way
From rustic farmhouses to contemporary abodes, bespoke kitchen specialists, The Main Company, design some of the most unique kitchens for their customers. As we head into 2025, Alex Main, director of The Main Company, shares his insights into an upcoming trend.
“Wood is being embraced in the home and in the kitchen more than ever before. From cabinet fronts to accent details, homeowners are steering towards a lighter, more refined look with wood,” Alex
says. “Part of the desire to create a more natural looking space, we have found that this elegant, more refined approach to incorporating wood is following through into other areas of the home.”
“The kitchen trend for 2025 will be towards bolder, moodier colours with greens, blues and even plums, with attention to detail on textures, design features and layering,” says Sandra Rothwell. “Smooth surfaces mixed with fluted or reeded wood doors combined with natural and man-made materials, and larger format tiles on the floor to keep
it elegant and easier to clean. Hidden storage creates a fun element with personalised larders and wine storage, to keep everything clutter free but interesting.
“Integrated appliances with more focus on healthy cooking such as air fryers, steam ovens, and sous vide equipment will become very important in kitchen designs. Vintage touches will mix the old with the new such as retro tiles and antique style fittings. Recycling and sustainability are huge now and will become more so next year. Look out for larger kitchen islands that will be the hub of the room for dining and socialising rather than just food preparation.”
“Kitchen colours are like fashion – they come and go and come round again,” says Celia Warbrick of Moneyhill Interiors. “We are previewing the
2025 colour palette as being muted greys (again!), black, gold and dark greens and the usual whites and creams. What is projected however is texture – in both cabinet doors and worktops, and a big mix of natural dark woods, and in coloured veneers. The mix is often with different colours on the island to the main body of the kitchen.
“Whether your choice is handpainted and more traditional or high gloss lacquer or textured laminate the choice is endless,” she adds. “What is important is the design and layout tailored to your specific needs and dreams – your kitchen should last at least 10-15 years, it needs to be right!
“At Moneyhill we offer hand built furniture from Jane Cheel Furniture and contemporary from German Pronorm, Arrital and Molteni from Italy and a huge range of appliances, together with a free design service.”

Perfect ESCAPE
The bathroom has transformed into our sanctuary in the home. Here’s what you can expect to see in them in 2025
The bathroom, once seen as a purely functional space, is rapidly evolving into a sanctuary of relaxation, wellness and luxury. A new wave of bathroom trends are emerging as 2025 begins, redefining how this essential room is best used. From wellness-centric spaces to oversized shower enclosures, Jeevan Seth, CEO at JTP who have outlets across the UK, here writes about the bathroom trends which are set to dominate over the coming year…
Bathrooms are no longer functional spaces, they’ve turned into rooms which must combine wellness, relaxation and self-care. Features like steam showers, rainfall shower heads, heated towel rails and freestanding bathtubs are more
frequently being introduced in order to create wellness-centric areas.
A shift towards darker, moodier bathroom designs is a reflection of the wider trend for more luxurious, spa-like spaces in the home. Exuding a sense of sophistication, deep shades like charcoal, navy and forest green will create a rich, opulent feel, capable of transforming a bathroom into a high-end retreat. Dark colours also add a depth to the space which allows for highcontrast design elements, such as brushed brass and chrome fixtures, or opt for matt black for a cohesive, contemporary look. Bold hardware designs are gaining popularity with homeowners who are looking to combine both functionality and aesthetics in a quick and easy way. Brushed brass, bronze and matt black are popular choices for adding visual interest to the bathroom, giving spaces
There is a trend for more luxurious, spalike spaces
a more refined and high-end finish. As minimalist bathroom designs continue to be a favourite amongst homeowners, statement hardware will add a touch of colour without overwhelming the scheme.
Another trend which has been heavily inspired by high-end hotels and spas, oversized shower enclosures provide homeowners with a spa-like experience from the comfort of their own home. With a sophisticated style similar to a wetroom, they offer a touch of luxury, but without the need to waterproof the entire bathroom. Whilst better suited to larger bathrooms, they are designed to make efficient use of any available space, with the open layout creating a light and airy feel.
From sleek and minimalist to more traditional and vintage-inspired designs, statement bathroom radiators are having a moment in the spotlight. Combining practicality with high-end design, they offer homeowners a stylish way to add a focal point that exudes warmth and personality. They will blend seamlessly with other bathroom fixtures due to the array of finishes on offer, from brushed brass to matt black. They’re also simple to install, whilst being a fairly affordable way to update a bathroom when the budget is tight.

“Today's bathrooms are all about merging functionality with style”
HTrend-led vs Timeless
Go with a bold look or keep things classic? Senior Designer from Ripples Newbury, Leanne Robey, gives her thoughts
istorically, bathrooms were driven by functionality rather than style and luxury; however, today’s bathrooms are all about merging all these elements to create a fun, stimulating and personalised environment in which to spend time. A bathroom should reflect your unique individuality and flair by including a range of materials, colours and textures, and shouldn’t be restricted by the status quo of a ‘timeless’ design.
As a designer, developing a scheme based on trending concepts can be incredibly exciting, allowing you to explore a client’s personality and incorporate it into a one-of-a-kind space. A favourite way to embrace trends within a bathroom design is through tiling, with a feature tile being a fantastic way to introduce a popular colour, texture, or pattern. By interestingly configuring tiles, you can create a look which is unique to you, even if you’re using the must-have tile of the moment. You can also incorporate trends through painted furniture or even a painted bath, allowing you to embrace the most soughtafter colour.
Timeless appeal
Some people might consider a timeless style to be a safe option; however, it doesn’t have to be bland. Marble, for example, is an ageless material, but it can also be bright and bold and can add interest and colour to a space. Equally, a rolltop bath in copper or tin is a classic choice, but can also create a big style statement within your room, making the space anything but dull. With a timeless design, it is all about focusing on high-quality products that are known for their longevity rather than popular fads which can quickly date. Investing in quality sanitary-
ware and classically shaped brassware will ensure your bathroom will not only stand the test of time but will always remain in style. Brassware finishes such as chrome and brushed nickel might not be the newest on the market, but the beauty lies in how understated they are and the elegance they can bring to the room.

DECOR DECADENT
Sandra Rothwell on ten Christmas trends for the home this season
Christmas is the perfect time to really love your house and add the extra touches to make it feel special and welcoming to family and friends. I love all things natural and organic with a real Christmas tree and wreath for the front door. Natural foliage garlands wrapped around banisters and above the fireplace and table decorations foraged from the garden; log fires and comfy throws and cushions in warm spice shades, with gorgeous scents like cinnamon spice wafting through the house. There is joy in anticipation…
Here are my top 10 Christmas décor trends for 2024:
1. Continuing on from last year's success, brightly coloured bows and ribbons on everything will be a huge trend.
2. Sculptural paper decorations are an old tradition but very much back in style, either as large standalone ones, paper chains for the tree or wreaths. Supersized decorations are a thing and more really is more, both inside and outside the home.
3. Pops of red have been hugely popular this year and especially in the run up to Christmas – pink and red tinsel trees are now trending! This really does lean into the maximalist aesthetic, particularly if you start adding baubles and decorations to it.
4. Sweet treat inspired tree decorations are big this year too, continuing our love for all things baked.
5. Nostalgic magic is always on trend with old but loved Christmas decorations being revisited, possibly as part of the festive tablescape done in traditional reds and greens. Gingerbread houses and candy canes work their magic too in this setting.
6. Nutcracker figurines are still very popular decorations – but be sure to use them on a real tree.
7. Doorscaping is so important to welcoming your guests and giving a taste of what is inside. Wreaths are a must, and a festive welcome mat, with candles in lanterns and a small potted tree. A pile of logs or basket with dried flowers by the door, and if space allows, maybe even go all out and put a festive rustic arch decorated with dried flowers and twinkling lights.
8. Crystal glasses and gorgeous coloured cocktail glasses and water glasses are always on trend at this time.
9. Ceramic Christmas trees and Christmas village sets – miniature recreations of enchanting scenes add a warm and cosy feel.
10. Wooden Christmas decorations are a sustainable and popular choice this year.
However you dress your house, make sure you allow time to enjoy the process!

beauty with more than half of the development designed as green parkland, play areas, allotments and woodland.
Gateway Park West at the entrance of Graven Hill is a unique haven for wildlife and the community alike; offering a little oasis to promote both health and wellbeing for visitors via its boardwalks, winding pathways, ponds and natural habitats.
FACILITIES ON THE DOORSTEP
As well as being close to the world-famous Bicester Outlet Village, the growing Graven Hill community already has an award-win-
ning new primary school and state-of-the-art dental practice. Land has been earmarked for a private nursery with other retail space set for even more unique outlets. Other amenities planned include a convenience store, sports pitches, a community centre and allotments for gardening enthusiasts.
Graven Hill is also within walking distance of Bicester Village and its railway station, from which it’s just 15 minutes from Oxford and less than an hour to London by train.
PERSONAL CASE STUDY
Bart Wilczynski and his wife Klaudia were attracted by the unique nature of Graven Hill – the architecture, its individuality and the fact that they hadn’t come across any development quite like it.
Bart explains: “Being Polish, it really reminded me of home. Each house was unique and reflected the individuality of its occu-
pants. I’m quite used to self-build, which is very popular in Poland, and it made me realise how much I wanted the freedom to design my own legacy.”
They snapped up the 327 sq m self-build plot, which came with outline planning permission already in place. Bart continues: “We love the custom build model, the homes are energy efficient and can be tailored to suit your needs. Once we moved in, I also decided to make further changes and add a gym to the garden.”
The Wilczynskis’ timber framed selfbuild is unveiling a dramatic design using a charred timber façade known as Shou Sugi Ban, which protects the wood against the elements using fire. The cantilevers, rooftop terrace and balcony also provide additional striking features.
Bart explains: “I decided not to appoint an architect and do everything myself, from design to delivery. As a joiner and business owner, I had trade accounts, understand the costs of building materials from foundations upwards, and have lots of experience in sourcing products.
“I took a training course in Computer Aided Design (CAD) in order to evolve my design. I had so many ideas and have tried to pare back and simplify my focus. I’ve created a warm and uncluttered space, with lots of natural finishes including timber, stone and polished plaster. I have learnt so much through the process. I do have a builder assisting me as I still have my own company to run as well. This project has also given me the chance to diversify my business using my knowledge of timber façade and cladding which I now offer my own clients. Who knows, maybe one day we will also offer design and delivery of other self-build homes.
“Moving to Graven Hill has been one of the best decisions we have made,” he adds.
“It is a fantastic place to bring up a family, we are really part of a wonderful community. It really does feel safe and secluded, yet close to facilities. It also has so much personality, from the individuality of the architecture, the landscape setting and the culture.”

Q In a nutshell, what does The Marist School o er?
A The Marist is a Catholic, all-girls, independent day school from 2-18-yearsold, and academically selective in the senior school. We are an ambitious school which provides so many opportunities for young people. The girls excelled in their A-levels this summer with 48% achieving A* to A, 20% above the national average. We have worked hard on our educational provision in academic rigour, co-curricular, sporting success and a bespoke Sixth Form curriculum. Our Senior and Prep curriculum has extended with The Marist Diploma in Years 6-9 and enrichment into Year 7, with lessons such as woodland photography and environmental studies. Needless to say we also have small class sizes which allows for that important relationship building with both peers and teachers. We o er academic excellence without sacrificing the rounded education which comes from a school which has wellbeing high on the

agenda. We have recently been shortlisted for Student Wellbeing in The Independent Schools of the Year Awards 2024 and are finalists in the Talk Education Awards for Innovation for Pastoral Care and Wellbeing.
Q What are the benefits of the single sex environment?
A There is a focus on the love of learning and a curiosity for learning. It is an environment where girls can be whoever they want to be; aspirational and ambitious. Research from the Girls’ Schools Association (GSA) reveals girls only education leads to greater confidence and higher academic achievement and this is reflected in our exam results. There are no stereotypes here, as illustrated in the choice of subjects at university where STEM featured highly: Veterinary Science at Cambridge; Physics at St Andrews and Economics at Bath to name a few. Boys are not out of the picture, we enjoy mixing in a co-ed environment, just not in the classroom and in our day-to-day
learning. Girls in all year groups mix with boys in social settings and, in the case of Sixth Form, for various workshops, competitions and leadership opportunities where we host students from all schools, co-ed and single sex.
Q What do you believe your students are prepared for when they leave the school?
A We build the confidence of our students from an early age so when they leave us at the grand age of 18 years, they are prepared to be future leaders and innovators. They will be adept in their hard skills; these will get them in the door of their choice, but young people need much more in today’s world. Our students leave us equally adept in their communication skills, their presentation and problem-solving skills. They leave us with a strong moral compass which will stay with them for life, and that is perhaps the most important as The Marist values remain with you.

AN INQUIRING MIND
Emma Adriano, Deputy Head and Head of Pre-Prep, St George’s School Windsor Castle, on developing curious minds
Children are born with innate curiosity. A strong desire to understand the world around them, a boundless imagination, unbridled creativity and the ability to observe without prejudice. This deep thirst for knowledge drives their motivation to try new things and explore their surroundings, to ask questions and freely express their ideas.
As children get older, growing from babies to toddlers, preschoolers, and onwards into their teenage years, an increasing awareness of social norms, fear of failure and extended screen time erodes this curiosity. Children become less able to think creatively.
With the looming pressures of inspections and league tables, overstretched teachers and congested timetables, schools can also all too often revert to ‘teaching to the test’. Following a strictly prescribed syllabus and rote learning, the sole aim becomes an exam grade. In all of this, the one thing which gets lost is the child. Being able to recite Shakespeare or recall your 12 times table may be enough to pass an exam, but without context this knowledge is meaningless. Children need to be able to apply this to real world situations. They also need to be able to decode new information. If someone has never had the opportunity to develop ownership and agency over their learning, to think independently about a topic, organise their thoughts
and undertake their own research to understand more, when faced with something new, they will often flounder.
Rather than simply a head full of facts, an inquiring mind, filled with curiosity, creativity and imagination is what is needed most to navigate our increasingly complex and interconnected world.
“CREATIVITY AND IMAGINATION IS WHAT IS NEEDED MOST TO NAVIGATE OUR COMPLEX WORLD ”
To nurture this in our students, we passionately believe in the power of an inquiry-based curriculum. As such we embarked on a multi-year journey to become, in 2023, the first standalone prep school in the UK accredited to deliver the pioneering International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme.
This means that in our classrooms, rather than children working in isolation, you will see students collaborating with each other. Big picture thinking has replaced the regurgitation of facts. And we are actually quite often not in a classroom at all, taking our learning outdoors, into the community or interacting with peers across the globe. The result? Confident, happy children who know not only the right answers, but also the right questions. Children who are equipped to navigate the challenges which lie ahead in their senior schools and beyond. Children who are ‘Real World Ready’.

Students from St George’s School Windsor Castle and Windsor Girls’ School attended the unveiling of a new community defibrillator, financed through joint fundraising activities by the two schools, including a ‘Three Peaks Challenge’ within the private grounds of Windsor Castle. Collectively travelling 70,000 metres (43.5 miles) in 45 minutes using a variety of means, including cycling, hopping, skateboarding and dancing, the participating children and their teachers, in addition to Mike Sells from Windsor Lions and local Police Community Support Officer, David Bullock, covered the combined distance of the three highest mountains in the world twice over.
The resulting defibrillator, located at the Royal Adelaide hotel on Windsor’s Adelaide Square, is the latest of 25 devices already installed across the town through the Windsor Community Defibrillator Partnership (WCDP).

Christmas at Windsor Castle
The iconic landmark will be pulling out all the stops over the festive period
This festive period, visitors to Windsor Castle will see the State Apartments decorated with magnificent Christmas displays, while exclusive tours will give an unforgettable experience too. For the first time, miniature decorations will be added to the tiny rooms of Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House at Windsor Castle, in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the largest and most famous dolls’ house in the world.
The highlight of this year’s Christmas decorations at Windsor Castle will be a magnificent 20-foot-high Nordmann Fir tree in St George’s Hall, grown nearby in Windsor Great Park and illuminated with thousands of lights.
As well as the specially made miniature decorations will be added to Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House, there will also be a scaleddown Christmas tree in the Hall as well as a garland decorating the staircase. The new decorations, including tiny gilded-wood tree ornaments and designs inspired by 1920s embroidery and fringing, will be the final stage in the year-long celebrations marking the centenary of the Dolls’ House, a 1:12 scale replica of an Edwardian residence given to Queen Mary as a gift from the nation following the First World War.
Another sparkling Christmas tree will be found in the Crimson Drawing Room – one of the most elaborate rooms in the Castle. Part of the Semi-State Rooms created as private apartments for George IV, these rooms on the east side of the Castle are still used by members of the Royal Family for o cial entertaining and are open to visitors over the winter months.
In the Castle grounds, festive wreaths and foliage will adorn gates and lampposts
while inside, garlands on the Grand Staircase will greet visitors at the entrance to the State Apartments. Families can participate in craft activities and workshops exploring how the Victorians celebrated Christmas, held at the Learning Centre every day the Castle is open between 22nd December 2024 and 5th January 2025. On 5th December, a digital event will delve into stories of how Christmas was celebrated at Windsor Castle and Osbourne House during the reign of Queen Victoria. From family traditions to delightful gifts, the details of a Victorian Christmas will be brought to life by Curator of Paintings, Lucy Peter.
