EDITOR’S letter

I

’m going to put my hands up and say I truly cannot stand clothes shopping. The very idea makes me panic. Traipsing through stores trying to find things to buy, queuing to try them on, then having to glare into some ghastly mirror – solely to discover my bottom looks like an air balloon and my arms, gigantic Lincolnshire sausages – is too much like masochism for my liking. That said, I very much like looking at clothes on other people. It tells you so much about them. In this way, I suppose, we are all models – models cloaked in our very own brand of personality. So, it seems fitting to focus this September Fashion Issue on models – all of us! First up, I have a very jolly natter with an actual model (and racing driver, presenter, polo player, celebrity cook, designer and plenty more), the newlywed Jodie Kidd. She tells, on p.30, about designing for Debrett’s, motherhood and her latest career move. Georgie Lane-Godfrey speaks to model Chelsea citizen, the much-loved

11 CH_Sept_EDS_LETTER.indd 11

luxury leather purveyor Trevor Pickett. They both have a scream over G&Ts in The Arts Club, on p.38. More lovely models appear in our delicious food pages by way of former model Jemima Jones and Lucy CarrEllison of fashion catering company Tart London. They tell us about food and models and how these creatures actually eat…apparently! And over in interiors, Camilla Norton tells us what we can look forward to in the borough at this month’s London Design Festival – lots of design models. Finally, I’d like to end by dedicating this issue to a male model (colleague), Phil Couzens, our Senior Designer; a fellow who has worked so tirelessly to make this issue (and indeed every issue) look worthy of the models within it. Phil, you’re one in a mill. ◆

KAZUHITO TAKADOI extile works have always been popular forms of art and I have recently fallen in love with these woven pieces by Japanese-born Kazuhito Takadoi. Nature is central to her work – not only is it her main influence, but it’s in the make-up of her materials too. Her wonderful woven creations are constructed using her own ‘homegrown’ plants (gathered from her garden and allotment), which have been T

meticulously dried, stitched and tied; there are no added colours in her work. Her pictures are sophisticated and elegant, and would stand as decorative works in any environment – especially those with dark lighting. THE THREE LIVES OF DYLAN THOMAS

FILM PREVIEW

MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT D i re c t e d b y wo o dy a l l e n From 19 September

S

till riding high after the triumph of Blue Jasmine, the ever-prolific Woody Allen brings the world Magic in the Moonlight. A slight departure from the realism and human tragedy of his previous film, Magic in the Moonlight is set in the 1920s and tells the story of a cynical and misanthropic stage illusionist Stanley (played by Colin Firth) whose stage persona is the mystical Wei Ling Soo. He is invited by fellow stage magician, Howard Burkan (Simon McBurney), to visit the Cote D’Azur in order to meet the mystic and clairvoyant Sophie (Emma Stone) who has enchanted a wealthy American family, so much so, their son is considering proposing marriage. Despite being an experienced illusionist, Howard cannot uncover Sophie’s tricks and has begun to believe that she has real supernatural powers. The cynical Stanley (Firth) is quick to express

ward-winning journalist Hilly Janes grew up hearing her father, the artist Alfred (Fred) Janes’s stories about Dylan Thomas. A lifelong friend, Fred painted the poet throughout his life. Using her father’s portraits as focal point Hilly’s biography traces Dylan’s journey from growing up in Swansea to scrounging, boozing and philandering in Fitzrovia and his untimely death in New York, aged 39. Drawing on a personal archive that includes letters and diaries she throws new light onto this complex figure now legendary as the epitome of Bohemian dissoluteness. ‘He was cruel, he was a sponger, even when he had money of his own he went out of his way to hurt those who helped him.’ Despite Dylan’s cuddly, cherubic attractiveness he was sexually predatory, and shamelessly exploited his friends but was also a brilliant poet, utterly dedicated to his craft. He married the beautiful dancer Caitlin Macnamara who was even wilder and more drunken than him. Although uncritical, Hilly’s honest account of Dylan’s life gives us a captivating picture of a flawed genius. She captures the thoughtfulness below the flamboyance. Amidst the booze and the brawls, Dylan fashioned some of the greatest verse of his age. He predicted to friends that he would die before he was 40, which was probably the only promise he faithfully kept. ◆ By Alice Coke

A

his disbelief and disdain, but the more time he spends in the magical Sophie’s company, the more she strips away his doubt. Viewers will have to watch for themselves in order to find out whether Allen has turned his hand to the supernatural, but some things about the film are certain: a visual treat is in store, with gorgeous period costumes by Sonia Grande. Grande seems to have had an absolute ball with the Twenties theme, kitting out the beautiful Emma Stone in drop-waisted delights. The visual feast doesn’t end there, as cinematographer Darius Khondji’s superlative lighting bathes the film in a translucent glow – the very same glow that proved to be the saving grace of Midnight in Paris. Fans of Allen may not find all they have come to expect from the acclaimed director but what they will find is a fun film with moments of real beauty. ◆ By Catherine Hales

SEDUM ‘Herbstfreude’

eptember is a surprisingly refreshing month in the garden. In August everything gets a bit overblown, splayed and spent, and I feel a bit done in and slightly bored of it all. But somehow, come September, plants seem to perk up with a back to school feeling. Things start going all tawny, russetty and coppery, as we start the gentle decline into winter. Sedum ‘Herbstfreude’ is case in point. Starting out in early spring as a bright green rosette, by September, this gorgeous bee and butterfly magnet has grown into a majestic size and has blushed a deep and satisfying raspberry. T RREPORT END Decorative zips, demure monochrome and fierce leopard print, jean queen Donna Ida discovers this season’s hottest looks OVERSIZE OUTSIZED KNITS

Oversize is gathering pace with slouchy sweaters and long chunky cardigans taking to the catwalks of The Row, Peter Pilotto and Prada. Think block colour, think pastels, think prints – anything goes. Leon & Harper have a beautiful standout piece – Bohemian-inspired, mixing leopard print and autumnal colours for an easy throw-on, to wear over jeans and a tee. For super luxe knits, try 360 Sweater for simple and classic shapes, and New York label Minnie Rose for their best-selling Ruffle Shawls or Pow Wow cape style cashmere styles. u LA PRESTIC OUISTON, DEHORS SMOKE VESTE JACKET, £550; DONNAIDA.COM

ART

Art is providing light relief this season with fun, bright colours and prints adding to basic shapes like on the catwalks of Matthew Williamson and Dries Van Noten. London-based designer Simeon Farrar adds neon-coloured paint to his pieces overlaying it with a ditsy print floral sweater. A tweet I sent about my glittery Miu Miu sandals having a neon sole, inspired his grey jumper with ‘You glitter neon soul’ written on it surrounded by a pink heart. For a nod to the eighties, try a neon rainbow black long sleeved top with a unicorn emblazoned on the front.u

LEOPARD PRINT

STYLIST CAMILLA SVERDRUP-THYGESON

Leopard print is a perma-trend, as seen at the shows of Givenchy and Chloe, and deserves a place in the modern wardrobe. This look is timeless, so consider a piece from La Prestic Ouiston, a French brand which I love as it uses vintage-inspired prints mixed together. To get a touch of leopard try the La Prestic Janine or Madame Blouse, or the Smoking Jacket which features a little piece of the print, say, the arm of the top, or the collar of the jacket. For all out leopard however, go retro with the beautiful silk twill Dehors Silk Trench. u

Exposed zips are having a high fashion moment evident through the catwalks of Dior, Stella McCartney and Alexander Wang for Balenciaga. In the denim world they have moved from simple ankle zips to adding detail on the pockets and thighs. They give a strong, directional look, following the biker-inspired trend. Try J Brand’s new Dee style with double zips on both thighs or alternatively look to Paige’s Edgemont style. Team them with an oversize knit and you’ve got yourself a casual weekend ensemble. ◆

MONOCHROME

Monochrome can be versatile as seen in Celine, DKNY, Louis Vuitton and Bottega Veneta. But this season either go chic or go sporty. Bella Freud is new to my Donna Ida store – with fine knits with slogan designs as worn by Kate Moss and Alexa Chung. These are delicate

pieces with phrases like ‘Ginsberg is God’ and simply ‘1970’ on them. For sports luxe, Aiko’s collection is cool and edgy, featuring graphic tees and oversize sweaters. The phrases are clever and irreverent with ‘Sayonara Paris’ and ‘Au Revoir Tokyo’, perfect for a girl on the go. Team with high-waisted jeans IDA Rizzo Ankle Skinny in Milk or IDA Ankle Slim Mabel in Noir. ◆

Although the skinny jeans still reign supreme, boyfriend jeans are continuing to contend for the crown. I wear mine high-waisted in a dark indigo turned up at the ankle in the style of Marilyn Monroe (she was the inspiration for my IDA Bobby Dazzler Jeans in Fifties Monroe). I also love the loose Current/Elliott The Boyfriend in Loved or Frame Denim Le Garcon in Black to wear with heels and a belt with a simple silk blouse. Wear them rolled up or cut the hems off to wear loose and frayed at the bottom. If you love the shape but like a print, try printed pyjama style loose trousers and team print on print for a high fashion look. ◆

GREY

Grey was everywhere at the AW14 shows, notably Derek Lam, Emilia Wickstead, Valentino and Micheal Kors. It continues to be an understated, elegant alternative to all-black, adding a slightly softer side to your look. For tops, slouchy slogan jumpers from Wildfox are soft and cosy, whereas Eleven Paris offer graphic tees with art-inspired prints. If you’re looking for the jeans in the perfect shade of grey, try high-waisted IDA Rizzo in Foggy London or J Brand 620 in Nightbird in their new Photo Ready fabric or James Jeans Twiggy in Slate. ◆

ake it from me – you guys are I know this because having T lucky. lived in Chelsea and Fulham collectively for 11 years, and worked in fashion for a wee while (my first internship was at a Sloane Street couturier aged 16 – I’m now 31), it has come to my attention that shopping here is bliss. Harvey Nichols and Harrods are on the doorstep, some of our favourite British designers’ largest stores too; there’s a smorgasbord of brilliant boutiques, and high street shopping is at its best. In fact so style conscious are we that over the years, we’ve even created our own borough-based trends – the Ugg boot, the pashmina, posh Bohemia, the Sloane, the red trouser brigade – like ‘em or not, they happened! But as I introduce my column in this September issue, I feel it fair to warn you that I am not here just to guide you safely through the gauntlet of seasonal trends and must-have pieces from big-name designers. From time to time, I will pelt you with quirky, beautiful and inspiring niche fashion, and new style experiences – from trialling bespoke bras to meeting jean experts, discovering local up-and-coming designers in their studios, finding the best tailors and querying why high fashion has become obsessed with sequinned bodyparts. After all, what are you employing me for – to tell you the way to Sloane Street? I think not. ◆

Whizz Kidd Model, presenter, racing driver, cook. Jodie Kidd takes it all in her stride but admits motherhood has slowed her down. Well, sort of… Wo r d s e d w i n a l a n g l e y

W

hen most people think of Jodie Kidd, they will probably envisage her legs. Those, and her lithe body, her blue eyes, that golden hair... It was, after all, this celestial look that so arrested worldfamous photographer Terry O’Neil, on a beach in Barbados, when Jodie was just 15 years old. A mere teenager, she was unexpectedly propelled into the forefront of the fashion industry. Up and down catwalks of the nineties Jodie strutted – Alexander McQueen, YSL, Matthew Williamson – shooting campaigns for Chanel and appearing on front covers for British Vogue, and Elle in the US. She had the height, the body and the fiercely photogenic face to match; she was, indisputably, the archetypal supermodel. So I find it all rather amusing that when I finally get to interview this super model (after months of to-ing and fro-ing with PRs) I don’t get to see any of the above! Telephone interviews can be a blessing for the media shy, but when all you want to do is gawp at someone, they can make you feel robbed (as unprofessional as that is to admit). That said, the fact that I can’t see Jodie

CH_Sep_Jodie_Kidd.indd 30

I started getting ANXIETY, PANIC attacks.... means I turn my attention to something else – her voice. Anyone intimated by her 6ft 2” stature – and I imagine there are a fair few – cannot fail to be won over by her posh, deep, rather sexy tones. She is confident, but warm. Interviewing Jodie on the telephone, I quickly discover, is perhaps not so bad after all. ‘The only reason I started modelling was because I needed to buy a lorry,’ Jodie tells me from her car (on handsfree) as she drives through Fulham. ‘I was going from ponies into horses, and had just sold my 14.2 [hands pony] and bought a young [horse]. My lorry was too small and I needed to buy a [bigger one], but I couldn’t afford it. So I thought, ‘Right I’ll give this modelling malarkey a couple of months.’ And god, that was it. 15 years later, I was walking up and down every catwalk in the world.’ Whilst it’s true that Jodie’s career took off with enviable gusto, it wasn’t without its challenges. She was constantly criticised for being too thin, some suggesting her very presence on the

catwalk promoted anorexia. I wonder how the teenage Jodie handled this. ‘At [that age] you’re so robust,’ Jodie says, brushing it off nonchalantly. ‘You can do whatever you want. It was an amazing rollercoaster. I was opening and closing some of the best shows ever, and working with the best designers. I now look back at it and go: ‘I’m exhausted just thinking about it.’ But when you’re in your teenage years, as I said, you’re completely robust. You get on with it.’ And so she did, for six years. But working that hard and fast, unsurprisingly, took its toll and she was struck down by glandular fever. ‘I started getting anxiety, panic attacks, and I was just…’ she pauses. ‘I think it was my body going: ‘Jodes, you’ve worked like a demon since you were 15 and you have not stopped, every single day. You’re travelling the world, you’re eating hamburgers and McDonalds, and you’re not looking after yourself.’ I got a bit low through being ill and having the anxiety, so I took a step back. I got back into my horses and that’s where I took up playing polo. Horses were amazing; [they] cured me.’ It seems almost contradictory that someone who suffered anxiety as a model should choose professional polo playing as a means to conquer it. To later add motor racing into the mix – following an

FASHION / INTERVIEW appearance on BBC’s Top Gear, she came out first on Jeremy Clarkson’s celebrity test track challenge leader board and consequently took up racing too – it’s little wonder she is a high-octane enthusiast. But where does this drive come from? ‘I don’t know,’ she replies pensively, before conceding, ‘I was born into a very competitive equestrian family. My father [John] was on the British team for polo and showjumping, Jem [Jemma, her elder sister] did dressage and Jack [her elder brother] was also on the British team for polo. I then went into motor racing... So, yeah, we’re all very competitive.’ This competitive streak has led her, not only from polo pitches to racetracks, but to the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing dance floor in 2008, and more recently, to the 2014 Celebrity MasterChef kitchens. ‘Good fun, ey?’ Jodie says of her time on the cookery show, where – ever ambitious – she made it to the finals. ‘There were no fluffy TV things. There was a moment where I thought, ‘Oh god, something’s not quite right...’ and I looked around, expecting someone to come and help. But you are a-lone. No one says a word. So that was a bit of a baptism of fire. You get [bad] remarks and you get praised; it was like being back at school.’ Whilst many would baulk at the idea of testing themselves à la their school days, Jodie seems to relish such challenges. Her latest ‘education’, if one can call it that, has been in designing. She recently collaborated with Debrett’s – ‘such a cool brand’ – to create funky-coloured leather travel wallets. So popular was her SS14 collection, that she barely had to alter it for AW14. But was this more for the sake of convenience? In all seriousness, how much time can a high-octane junkie really devote to the arduous, painstaking process of accessory design? ‘I was very, very hands on, from the zips to the colours. Everything was my idea,’ she says

I was VERY, VERY hands on.... EVERYTHING was

my idea

firmly. ‘I was travelling a lot with Indie [her two-year-old son, Indio, by former partner and Argentinian polo player Andrea Vianini] and I was fed up of […] faffing around finding boarding passes. I needed something that was going to be cool, to wear across my body. So it was more necessity, rather than thinking, ‘Oh, what should I make?’.’ Her reference to Indie raises the point that not only does Jodie juggle a myriad of careers, but she is also a full-time mother. ‘It’s certainly slowed me down,’ she says of parenthood. ‘I’m a real stickler for time. If I was late for an aeroplane or something, I [used to be] all like ‘panicpanic-panic’. Now I’m more: ‘Well, you can’t do anything about it!

33 CH_Sep_Jodie_Kidd.indd 33

‘Family is most important and everything else comes second,’ she says, sincerely. ‘I was very career-orientated for many years and now it’s my family. I’m working for [them], rather than myself. It’s all about my family.’ Jodie currently splits her time between West Sussex and Fulham, where her fiancé (at the time of interview, but now husband) David Blakeley lives. ‘He’s just off Parson’s Green. Being around Fulham is lovely…it’s a very cool place. If I had to live in London again, I’d live round here.’ We talk about her forthcoming wedding preparations, which she describes as ‘amazing’ and ‘incredible’. ‘We can’t wait for it to happen,’ she enthuses. ‘We’re beaming from ear to ear.’ After that, you’d think she might take some time out to settle into married life. But, no surprises here, Jodie has recently signed up to present CNN’s equestrian coverage, a role set to take her all over the world. ‘My first job was going to the Hickstead Derby and interviewing the absolutely fabulous [Hickstead Director] Daisy Honeybunn,’ she raves. ‘I’m doing all the showjumping, three-day eventing and dressage [for the channel], which is absolutely brilliant – my dream job.’ The papers said she’ll be carting Indie around with her, but when I mention it, she scoffs. ‘It was just something I said to someone…and of course, someone’s picked up on it and [now] he’s the bloody CNN mascot! I’m not going to drag him all the way to Doha, but if I go to Hickstead, I’ll take him with me.’ I tell Jodie to drive safely and just like that, she is off, right back to where she belongs: the fast lane. ◆ Jodie Kidd for Debrett’s AW14 Travel Wallets are available now. 020 7290 5950; debretts.com

Take this down with your new Montegrappa fountain pen: AW14 menswear can be found here…

s it turns out, our muscles aren’t good at looking after A particularly themselves. I know… it surprised me too. Try as we might to ‘warm down’ after exercise, and take healing showers after half an hour (or 5 minutes) with the dumbbells, sometimes causing injury is unavoidable – or so I think, please do write in and tell me if I’m wrong. Either way, it’s still a good idea to treat our muscles once in a while. With this in mind, I booked myself into the Chelsea Day Spa to undergo a Deep Tissue Massage. I use the word ‘undergo’ in this sense as, contrary to some other massage techniques, the DTM is about rectification rather than relaxation. Indeed there were times when, had I not had such faith in my masseuse, I could easily have opined that she was trying to extract secret information from me, such was the technique involved. First my legs (I have extremely tight hamstrings, who knew?), then my back, were muscularly realigned, before my neck and finally those under-armpit muscles – that only Cristiano Ronaldo seems to have – were probed and corrected. It may not have been the most comfortable hour of my life, but it might just have been the most necessary. In the days since, I have certainly felt infinitely more limber. It’s almost as if there’s method to this perceived madness. As my masseuse said to my wincing self on the day of the treatment, ‘no pain, no gain’. u

SPOTLIGHT

Portrait of a Gentleman Purveyor of luxury leather goods Trevor Pickett talks of up-coming adventures and celebrates 25 years in Piccadilly Wo r d s G e o r g i e L a n e - G o d f r e y

I

f you’ve ever seen the film Stardust, you’ll remember a poignant moment when the hapless hero Tristran is told by his father that, ‘There are shop boys, and then there are boys who happen to work in shops.’ It’s one of those quotes which has never seemed as apt as when I went to meet Trevor Pickett, the man behind the luxurious Pickett shop in the Burlington Arcade, selling handcrafted British leather goods. We meet at The Arts Club on Dover Street, just a short stroll away from his Mayfair store. ‘I can’t believe you caught us sneaking off to have a cigarette, like two naughty children!’ he giggles, when he finally finds me (he’s been loitering around the corner with his PR). When his drink arrives, he lets out a moan of dismay, ‘Oh no, the dreaded Fever Tree. Darling, let’s not have G&Ts here if it’s not Schweppes!’ Often described as the quintessential English eccentric, there’s a definite sense of showmanship to Pickett, which is probably what makes him so popular with his customers. But you get the impression that his tongue-in-cheek extraversion is as much for his own entertainment

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

CH_Sep_Trevor_Pickett.indd 38

as it is for yours, and an hour spent in his company discussing everything from opera to TOWIE is enough to make you desperate for him to like you. One shudders to think of how potent a weapon this is when he’s selling… Having always known that he wanted to work in retail, Pickett started off his career at the age of 16, in The Army and Navy, once a department store in Victoria which stocked luxury goods for

WE’RE A specialist shop...THAT’S THE CHARM the armed forces. A year later he moved to Burlington Arcade, to work in an English leather goods shop called The Unicorn Leather Company. By 18, he had been made manager, expanding the range of products to include high-end gloves, umbrellas and scarves. By 25, he had bought the shop himself. It was a meteoric path to success and, a quarter of a century later, the Pickett brand is still going strong.

Today, Pickett-the-store is celebrating 25 years in Burlington Arcade, selling ‘beautiful British-made leather goods with integrity and quality that are still very good value for money.’ Meanwhile Pickett-the-man is working on an ‘adventure’, but as to what that adventure might be, for the moment he remains tight-lipped. ‘I can’t tell you!’ he exclaims with mock horror, but hints at a re-brand for his eponymous label. When I wonder aloud at the prospect of him selling out, he dismisses the idea with a wave of his hand. ‘There’s been people who have sniffed around quite a bit but I never give the right answers. We’re a specialist shop – you couldn’t just open lots of branches at airports. But then, that’s the charm.’ And charming his store is. Neatly organized into rows and rows of buttery soft leather goods, you can’t help but want to get your wallet out. ‘I think the essential thing is that we appeal to a certain sector of the British market,’ he explains. ‘We’re never going to attract new money – our customers are more discerning, more understated and not label conscious. We’re a label-free oasis in a desert of designer branded products.’ Supplied by small artisanal workshops

from across the country, each of his products are unique and handmade to Pickett’s meticulous spec. ‘Someone suggested that I keep the most beautiful luggage for myself, but no,’ laughs Pickett, ‘I get all the rotten old samples where one handle is longer than the other. My briefcase is an old bucket bag with rivets in it!’ It’s this understated, rough-aroundthe-edges aesthetic that appeals to Pickett, who splits his time between a cottage in Suffolk and a flat in Chelsea. Having lived in the borough for almost three decades, he has become a familiar face in the area, attracted to its sense of community rather than its glamorous postcode. ‘I’ve lived in the same flat in Chelsea for 25 years and have really

I LOVE the feeling of being a LOCAL

within a close-knit COMMUNITY

grown to love the familiarity,’ he tells me affectionately. ‘I love the feeling of being a local within a close-knit community.’ It was this love of the area which led him to found Chelsea Dog Day 14 years ago, in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support: ‘It started as a dog show at the Royal Hospital, but last year we held it for the first time at The Design Centre. We made it feel like a traditional village fête, with strawberries and cream, straw bales, homemade cakes etc. It was a real triumph – just simple old-fashioned fun!’ Describing himself as more ‘Thorpeness Meare than Mustique,’ Pickett is refreshingly unpretentious and squirms when I ask him questions about being ‘the face’ of the brand. ‘It would be arrogant to say that people buy into me! No, I think a lot of customers like to know the shop is owned by a real person. For example, you can open an Italian restaurant and give it a name like ‘Giorgio’s’ so that people think mamma is cooking in the kitchen, but if it’s not genuine, it’s not going to appeal. So when people do find something that is actually owned by somebody and there’s an individuality to it, they like it. It’s that authenticity which attracts people.’ However, those ‘people’ Pickett has in mind when it comes to who he’d like to attract is rather specific. ‘If I could see my products on anyone, it would be on Tilda Swinton in the film I Am Love,’ he gushes. ‘I’d love to see one of my scarves on her and on Marisa Berenson, who plays the mother-in-law and is just so chic and stylish. It’s my favourite film and it really inspired me.’ A truly unique answer – what could be more fitting? ◆ Pickett, 32-33 Burlington Arcade, W1J, 020 7493 8939; pickett.co.uk

ABSOLUTELY / PROMOTION a luxury fabric top or dress, machine washable, and the results are stunning and sexy. In short, embrace the authentic romance of South America – with stylish contemporary shapes. All their Peruvian knits are made by skilled Andean artisans. Mix this stunning poncho [pictured left] with flattering jeans sewn from a coated denim that closely resembles leather. The results are sensational.

THE MATERIALS

Finer grades of alpaca are as luxurious as primo cashmere, though sturdier and warmer, and alpaca is dramatically softer than sheep’s wool. Long staple Peruvian pima cotton is the king of cottons, exceptionally soft and durable, and is featured year round. Careful handharvesting results in a lustrous, brilliant fibre which takes beautifully to dyes.

THE STORE

FLOAT DOWN TO PERU…

Each Peruvian Connection store is unique; the London flagship is a bazaar of intriguing textiles, treasures and accessories. Displaying a beautifully appointed Belle Époque Victorian décor – including period lighting, smoke-aged wallpapers, weathered wood flooring and an ethnographer’s collection of Andean photos and curiosities – it is a study in texture, layering and authenticity, much like the brand’s signature textiles. To enhance this, many artisan-made home décor pieces are available to buy as well. Peruvian Connection offers exuberant style to the adventurous Brit with an eye for uniquely beautiful apparel. It’s time you paid it a visit. u

t the risk of exposing myself as utter coward, I’ll admit that I A an am intimidated by beauty therapists. They are smoothskinned, sweet-smelling, primped, plucked and perfectly presented. They are the antithesis of coarse, hairy, old me. Therefore, I mostly find trips to the salon, a lesson in humility, in the art of accepting catty-eyed chastisement graciously: ‘Oh, well, yes I suppose I should pumice more often…’ Amelia at The Waxing Studio was much what I was expecting – incredibly wellpresented – but also very warm and smiley. The studio is a beautifully presented space (think clean white lines and fresh pink roses) within the Wellington Clinic on the King’s Road. What I particularly liked was that we kept up a friendly patter throughout the

appointment, at entirely my prerogative. Splayed out next to where I was sitting was a stack of magazines that I could have buried my head in if I had wanted to. As it was, we talked happily the entire time. ‘I think I’m an atheist,’ I found myself saying at one point. Amelia nodded sagely. I had a 45-minute pedicure (that actually lasted 1 hour 20mins – see? I do need to pumice more). It included cutting and filing toenails, the removal of dry skin, a scrub, cuticle soak and tidy, a leg and foot massage and a slick of varnish. Happily there was no chastisement; Amelia admitted that this kind of treatment falls more in the ‘little luxury’ bracket. Fittingly, it was a luxurious way to spend an hour; I came out, not only with spankingly clean and sparkling tootsies, but also feeling incredibly relaxed. I highly recommend it. ◆

DRINKING DINING & REVELRY SINCE 1867

Kettner’s has lived, surviving four kings and a queen, the blitz, several booms and more than a few busts, Kettner’s has seen it all and is an integral part of the vibrant and glamorous Soho we know and love today. Originally a series of four Georgian town houses, Kettner’s was first opened as a restaurant by Auguste Kettner (chef to Napoleon III) in 1867. Popular with deliciously colourful characters of the time including Oscar Wilde, Edward VII, Lillie Langtry, Agatha Christie and Bing Crosby, Kettner’s was famous for hosting incredibly risqué parties. Gorgeously glamorous, Kettner’s today boasts a Cocktail & Champagne Bar, all-day Brasserie and eight Private Dining Rooms available for hire. True to its colourful past, Kettner’s hosts an array of debauched events, from cabaret nights with internationally renowned cabaret artistes to cocktail filled jazz nights!

MODEL CATERERS Models live on champagne and lettuce, right? Wrong! say Tart London’s Jemima Jones and Lucy Carr-Ellison Interview by edwina l angley

EDWINA LANGLEY So, models actually eat – who knew?! JEMIMA JONES Of all the people we cook for on a shoot – models, photographers, stylists, make-up artists, producers – it tends to be the models who are most enthusiastic and excited about the food. LUCY CARR-ELLISON On the whole they pile their plates with healthy food, and often come back for seconds! JJ Some of the most famous models we have cooked for have not only shown the most humility, and been the most friendly, but have wolfed down our food with enthusiasm. LCE [Which is] surprising! They all seem pretty conscious about being healthy (the majority of our dishes are very healthy so they can just tuck in). However, occasionally you spy someone’s plate piled with cheese, or a slim little thing sneaking off with seconds of a naughty desert. EL How do you plan a shoot’s menu? JJ The budget for the shoot depends on how ‘luxey’ we can go, [but we also] like to cook seasonally. We use ingredients we are excited by, and take inspiration from different countries. EL What’s the most extraordinary (or fussy) catering request you’ve had to date? JJ The requests have been so varied that nothing seems particularly bizarre

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

CH_Sept_Chef_Q&A.indd 64

to us anymore. Perhaps, the request for overcooked egg whites accompanied by skinned and overcooked courgettes was rather odd – not what we would order! EL Brands you have worked with include Gucci, Stella McCartney and Vogue. How did you accumulate such a high profile client list? LCE The first shoot we did was for LOVE magazine with [photographer] Tim Walker and Kate Moss, and it just snowballed from there. We have been very lucky to have been asked to cater for such shoots. EL What’s your most popular dish? JJ People get excited over hot dishes that are sizzling or steaming away, like our Asian noodle soups with lots of [add-in] options. These include dumpling and seafood dishes, that you can opt for as saffron spicy or squid ink black. Lucy does a chocolate salted caramel tart, which is extremely popular. EL Are you organic and free-range? If so, where do you source your ingredients? JJ I think anyone in the food business has a responsibility to try to source as much locally produced food as they can. ‘Think global, buy local’ is a good mantra to live by for all sorts of reasons. But we are not purists about organic food – some of our food is, some of it isn’t. We use a lot

JEMIMA AND I FEEL VERY STRONGLY ABOUT FARM ANIMAL WELFARE 100% organic (the weather makes it pretty difficult), but the animals roam freely up on the moors. Jemima and I feel very strongly about farm animal welfare. EL You did a cooking course at The Grange and then founded Tart London. What gave you the idea? LCE I did The Grange when I finished school. I have always loved cooking and wanted proper training – The Grange was wonderful. I then went to study photography in New York where I would cook for friends in my tiny apartment – and there, I met Jemima! [I found] the New York shoots had fantastic catering, which we didn’t [have here]. Once I returned, I found my niche: cooking on-site, producing the freshest dishes possible.

• 250g quinoa spaghetti • 100 – 200g fresh crabmeat • 1 clove garlic • 1 chilli • basil • ½ lemon • splash of olive oil • salt and pepper ME T H O D

01 Boil water and cook quinoa spaghetti as per the instructions on the box. Make sure you rinse the pasta well 02 Once done, drizzle the pasta with olive oil and mix. Leave in the drainer 03 Thinly slice garlic and chilli 04 Add a good dash olive oil to a frying pan, place on medium heat, add the chilli and garlic, and sauté till just losing colour. Be careful as you do not want to burn the garlic. 05 Add the crabmeat and a pinch of salt and pepper 06 Add the cooked spaghetti to the garlic and crab mixture. Squeeze over the lemon juice and add few torn basil leaves. 07 Mix carefully and serve u

EL Jemima, you started out modelling at 15. What did you like about it? JJ Undeniably the best thing about modelling is the pay. I had a tremendous amount of financial independence at an early age because of it. The whirlwind life of a model can be extremely exciting – the locations, the amazing photographers, being ‘made up’ and ‘number one’ for the day. But it all wears thin after a while. EL It’s quite a leap to go from modelling to catering – what made you do it? JJ There were a few things that came before catering – interning at Vanity Fair in NYC and working at Art + Commerce. Being food-obsessed, I had always wanted to work in food, but it felt like such a big leap to suddenly go to cookery school. So when Lucy and I talked about me joining Tart London, it felt like a no-brainer. I haven’t looked back since.

EL You live with your financier fiancé Ben Goldsmith. Is he a good cook? JJ He is a very good eater of my food… EL Why the name ‘Tart London’? LCE It started as a joke really, from friends on shoots. I would come staggering in, sweating with pots and pans and they would say, ‘Ah, hear comes the kitchen tart...’! EL What’s your favourite tart? LCE Something naughty – a chocolate, salted caramel tart. EL How do you both stay so trim? HOW?! JJ Ha, Lucy and I eat all day long like little pigs. Doing what we do, lots of heavy lifting and standing on our feet all day, probably helps keep the rolls at bay. EL You are looking to open a restaurant. What type of restaurant would it be? JJ More of a home-away-from-home kind of place. We are looking around north west London, sorry Chelsea readers! It will be a base to prep for shoots but also open to the public for breakfast and lunch. People can eat the same grub we serve the [models]. EL Favourite Chelsea restaurants? JJ Jeremy King’s Colbert; they do an excellent croque-monsieur. LCE Zuma, Ziani’s and Tom’s Kitchen.

of suppliers, like the wonderful Parkway Greens in Camden. We also bring fresh produce back from my boyfriend’s place in Somerset and meat from Lucy’s father’s farm in Northumberland.

EL What would be your food heaven? LCE Either homemade pasta with truffles or something crunchy and spicy. JJ Vietnamese food – like phos, Vietnamese rolls and spicy sauces.

EL Lucy, you grew up there, in Northumberland. Did you eat organically? LCE As my father is a farmer I learnt about good, local produce from an early age. Our farm is mixed, so we produce a variety of crops, as well as sheep and cows. From as young as I can remember, my siblings and I helped out on the farm. Be it lambing or harvesting, we got a good understanding of where food comes from. Our farm is not

EL And your food hell? LCE A pile of deep fried food, yuk. JJ A pub Sunday lunch, or just a bad Sunday lunch – overcooked veg, floury gravy and leathery meat. The thought of it is making me gag!

WHITE PEACHES

These beautiful fruits are members of the rose family and are related to both apricots and almonds. They are high in potassium, fibre and Vitamin C, and contain beta-carotene, which the body converts to Vitamin A. We use white peaches in our poached chicken salad. A favourite with our regulars.

MUSSELS

Our mussels from Fouey in Cornwall are gorgeously plump and delicious, not least when served in our English Sparkling Wine, Shallot and Crème Fraiche sauce. Their health qualities include Vitamin B12, zinc, folic acid, iron, calcium and omega 3 polyunsaturates, as well as being a good source of selenium (which stimulates the metabolism and immune system, to protects cells from free radical damage). We have the best mussels in town!

IMPERIAL INGREDIENTS

AW14 doesn’t just mean new fashions, but new food. Here, Kate MacWhirter from The Imperial, reveals their autumnal menu’s top ingredients RUNNER BEANS

We are particularly excited about using the runner beans this season as we grow them in our garden to use in our restaurant. A great source of Vitamin C, folic acid and fibre, runner beans have a protective component against colon disease and contain free-radicals that can slow signs of aging and help prevent age related diseases.

AUBERGINE

At The Imperial, we like to cater for vegetarians as much as possible. This aubergine dish [pictured] is not only

visually stunning, but delicious and healthy too. Chargrilled, with giant beetroot, couscous, almond, mint and warm ricotta, its creamy texture and deep purple skin, make this dish not only mouth-watering and delicious, but visually appealing too. Interestingly, aubergines are not actually vegetables, they’re berries. As a result, they are high in anti-oxidants, folic acid and fibre.

BEETROOT

This is sweet and earthy vegetable – with its liver cleansing qualities and antioxidants, good for your heart – looks fabulous on any dish. We often use it in

67 CH_Sept_Imperial_ADV.indd 67

The British tomato season runs from June – October, so there’s still plenty of the little fruits around; and since we grow our own, we use them a lot. Picked from our garden by our chefs each morning, their freshness adds distinct sweetness to every dish. 01 Mix the dry tandoori spices. Remove a teaspoonful and set aside for the roast potatoes. 02 Combine the remaining spices with the yoghurt, ginger, oil, lemon juice and garlic. Set aside. 03 Place the chicken on a baking tray, slash thighs, and rub with the spice paste. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2hrs or overnight. 04 Parboil the potatoes for 4-5 mins, drain. 05 Stuff the chicken cavity with coriander and lemon. 06 Roast in a pre-heated oven set at 190°C/170°C fan/gas mark 5 for 45mins per kilo plus an extra 20mins. 07 Baste occasionally until the chicken is well-cooked. 08 1hr before the end, add the coconut oil and potatoes into the tray, season. 09 Roast for 1hr, turning a couple of times until crispy and golden. 10 For the sambal, mix ingredients into a mini blender with some water. Blitz until it resembles a paste, whilst retaining texture. Season and leave to stand for at least 10mins before serving. ◆

FOOD & DRINK / RESTAURANT REVIEW is traditional Gallic cuisine, its menu changes only slightly with the season. I started with the stereotypical Gallic Vichyssoise (£6) a refreshing and salty version, perked up by a softly poached quails egg, floating in the middle of the bowl. My husband chose the Pâté de Campagne aux Pistaches (£7), a hearty and coarse pork terrine. My grilled Lemon Sole (£22) was fragrant and light, infused with smoky undertones, accompanied by buttery new potatoes and a crisp green salad. My husband’s Onglet de Boeuf (£19.50) was sufficiently tender, soft enough to render the steak knife redundant, and the accompanying chips were so more-ish I poached more than a couple myself.

A

new restaurant has opened at the northern end of Sydney Street, in the spot which has seen rather too high a-turnover of restaurants. It is surprising, therefore, that there’s nothing new about this restaurant’s ‘concept’. Simply put, it’s a French brasserie. Likewise, there is nothing ‘new’ about its team – the ‘old guard’ of former St James’s ‘Brasserie St Jacques’, re-united under the instruction of head chef Laurence Glayzer. The

menu too, is stuffed with tried and tested French classics. In spite of this, however, it still stimulates a Francophile’s delight, and delightfully, every course delivers. For starters, charming general manager and sommelier Richard Weiss paired each of my husband and my courses with a specific wine (French, of course). His knowledge and passion left us in wonder and awe, so much so, I was reminded that no matter how many wine courses I make myself sit through, I’ll never have such a level of skill. As this establishment’s raison d’etre

71 CH_Sept_Food_Review.indd 71

We shared two puddings. First, the chocolate fondant (£6.50) – my staple if it appears on the menu. This was rich and deliciously bitter, but for the first time ever, it was the ‘other’ pudding which came out on top for me. The Crepes Suzette à la Victor (£9.50), named after a loyal customer from the previous incarnation (of which there seem to be many), was cooked at our table by Richard. His enthusiasm was contagious. Giving us a running commentary, he assured us it was very simple – ‘easy to make at home’ – but in fact, his magic technique was such I have since decided it’s best not to risk disappointment by attempting it myself. The result? Three perfectly light pancakes, dripping in a fabulous orange caramel sauce that tasted like Christmas. Brasserie Gustave is worth visiting for this dish alone. If I had to criticise any part of the night, it was that the restaurant was fairly empty, and the ambience might have been managed better with an effective dimmer switch. But I visited on a Tuesday night in mid-August; Brasserie Gustave will no doubt fill up once Brasserie St Jacques’ loyal customers return from their summer holidays – and newcomers discover the exceptional Crepes Suzette à la Victor. u 4 Sydney Street, SW3, 020 7352 1712; brasserie-gustave.com

FROM WATER TO WINE Georgie Lane-Godfrey takes in New Zealand’s natural wonders both on land and at sea in South Island Wo r d s G e o r g i e L a n e - G o d f r e y

I

t’s a moment of pure suspense, of intense anticipation. Holding onto the rails as the boat rocks, we wait, eyes peeled for the spray. And then we see it: a floating mass of grey appearing from the water. It rolls on the surface lazily and then dips out of sight, a tail erupting out of the sea in farewell as it dives back down under the waves. I’m in Kaikoura, the whale-watching hotspot in New Zealand’s South Island. The tour is threeand-a-half-hour voyage with Whale Watch Kaikoura, the leading company in the area with a 98% success rate for spotting whales. So confident are they, that they offer an 80% refund for trips where none of Moby’s mates show. Not that that was the case on our trip – we saw a grand total of three sperm whales, all located with radar technology that looks as though it has come straight off the set of a Cold War thriller. It’s apt though, as all the while you’re starring in a thriller of your very own. Listening to the bleeping in the bowels of the boat,

both crew and passengers hold their breath waiting for the signal. Suddenly the words ‘Go, go, go!’ boom out from the tannoy, and then it’s a mad dash, elbowing your way to the best spot on deck, amongst a cacophony of clicking as fellow traveller’s cameras attempt to capture the surfacing whales. Back on dry land, it feels as though you’ve stumbled across a quaint British seaside town – pebble-dashed buildings and fish and chips galore. The place is renowned for its crayfish – in Maori ‘Kai’ means food and ‘Koura’ means crayfish – and it’s best sampled at Hapuku Lodge, which lies just a short drive up the coast. Here, there’s not only fine dining on offer, but luxuriously unique accommodation, set amongst the canopy of the resident Manuka grove. These treetop suites have a distinct designfeel to them, with tactile hand-crafted wooden interiors and huge glass windows boasting breath-taking panoramas across both the Pacific coastline and the Kaikoura mountains.

TRAVEL / WANDERLUST

It’s a truly stunning, spell-binding view. When you do eventually descend from the treetops down to dinner, it’s worth the walk. In the kitchen is 2011 MasterChef finalist Fiona Read, who’s mouth-watering menu features the finest local produce, including many vegetables grown by the lodge itself. Alongside the delicious Kaikoura Crayfish, expect Canterbury Duck Leg with wilted Cavolo Nero and Cider Cranberries, followed by White Chocolate, Almond and Raspberry Semifreddo served with fresh cherries. All washed down with a selection of excellent New Zealand wines, of course. Many of these bottles come from Marlborough, the wine region located about an hour’s drive north from Kaikoura. Head for Blenheim’s Chateau Marlborough, a five-star maze of modern, black and white interiors, which is just two minutes walk from the town centre and perfectly located to explore the vineyards for which Marlborough is famous. The best way to do this is by bike, so that you can cruise around several in a day without the worry of driving over the limit (don’t underestimate the puny portions – all that tasting can add up). We took a tour with Explore Marlborough, which guides you around four or five

Next was onto the Seresin Estate, where the focus here is very much on organic, biodynamic produce, which includes not only wine but extra virgin olive oils too. There’s a pseudo-rustic Hollywood glamour to the place, and it doesn’t come as a surprise to learn that it’s owned by the renowned NZ cinematographer Michael Seresin. The celebrity touch does have its benefits – look out for the one-off dining opportunities when top chefs come and cook. This year it was Anna Hansen of The Modern Pantry in Clerkenwell. After a lazy lunch in the sunshine at Wairau River Estate, a family-friendly winery where the restaurant is packed with kids, we pottered up to the Brancott Estate. Located on a hill (don’t worry there’s a shuttle that lugs you up so you don’t have to cycle), the floor-to-ceiling windows in this contemporary winery offer stunning views across row upon row of lush green vines spread across the Brancott Valley. It’s a slick operation here, geared towards touring foreigners, but the wines are reasonably priced and excellently produced, so you forgive the commercialism. Sitting in the afternoon sunshine with a glass of Sauvignon Blanc, we raised a toast to the calories burned by our biking, safe in the knowledge we’d earned this moment lazing in the warm light as sun slowly disappeared behind the vines. ◆

We started at the Forrest Estate, a small, family run business where the wines are award-winning and the atmosphere is that of a genteel country club. Particularly tasty was The Doctors’ Riesling, with notes of Granny Smith, lime sherbet and mandarin. And since it’s made from low-sugar, early-harvested grapes, it’s a modest 8.5% alcohol, so you can enjoy another glass guilt-free (even if it is only 10am).

Sydney City Guide The best places to sleep, be seen and sunbathe in the world’s most beautiful city (well, I think so anyway...) Wo r d s A l e x a n d r a J o n e s

WHAT TO DO

What many people don’t realise about Sydney before going there is that it is an astoundingly beautiful city. There’s a reason why being harnessed in for a trek to the top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge is a tourist staple: the views rival those of any city in the world. But if you want to see it from a slightly safer vantage point, then head to Milsons Point Ferry Wharf at the base of the bridge or to Observatory Hill, which will give you the views without the vertigo. Aside from the architecture, Sydney has many beautiful parks and gardens. My personal favourite is the Royal Botanic Gardens (rbgsyd.nsw.gov.au) where the sheer abundance of natural life that Australia has to offer is much in evidence and where you can get an Aboriginal Heritage Tour for around AUD$35. It is an incredibly interesting 1.5hour talk from an Aboriginal guide who will discuss the flora and fauna, as well as the impact that Western settlers had on the landscapes and indigenous population in previous centuries. There are a number of fantastic galleries, but for a taste of the raw, bubbling artistic talent of young Sydneyites, it’s worth checking what’s going on at Carriageworks (carriageworks.com.au).

TRAVEL / CITY GUIDE The multi-disciplinary cultural centre is set in the old Eveleigh Rail Yards, heritage listed warehouse-style buildings formally used as railway workshops. Of course you can’t go to Sydney without spending some time on Bondi beach. If you’re up for a bit of activity, the coastal walk between Coogee and Bondi (a 5km jaunt that takes just over an hour if it’s done in one go) boasts some less populated, but equally beautiful, beaches and coves. Take a picnic and make a day of it.

WHERE TO STAY

With a Shangri-La hotel having just opened in the Shard, many of you will have now heard of the Hong Kong-based brand, though perhaps aren’t so familiar with their particular style of luxury. Their first hotel opened in Singapore in 1971 and since then they have been a paragon of deluxe travel across the Asia Pacific region, and that includes Sydney. As with their shiny new London venue, the Sydney hotel is renowned for it’s views. It is perfectly positioned to offer an unrivalled snapshot of Sydney Harbour, with the Harbour Bridge and Opera House dominating the landscape, both close enough to see in detail. It is the kind of view that will have you clambering out of bed each morning to throw open the blackout curtains so as not to miss even a moment of daylight. Having said that, it comes into its own at night, when the monuments and buildings of Sydney are all aglow. Most rooms feature a window seat, so I’d recommend ordering room service and whiling away an evening just taking it all in. The rooms are beautifully appointed, plush but pared-back, with a neutral, beige and brown, colour scheme and luxury finishes. All feature marble bathrooms with gold taps and wonderfully large beds, with feather soft pillows. In this respect the Shangri-La places itself

wellbeing, not just on tender muscles. As with the rest of the hotel, CHI, The Spa sits at a crossroads between luxury and comfort. If you decide to only try one treatment (and once you’ve seen what’s on offer, you’ll probably find that incredibly difficult) go for one of the spa’s signature ones: the CHI Balance uses acupressure to improve circulation and promote relaxation. Heaven.

WHERE TO EAT

THE SHANGRILA PLACES itself at the

deluxe end of corporate TRAVEL

at the deluxe end of the corporate travel market, offering a stay that takes comfort seriously. Don’t expect to be blown away by the design, though an unrivalled night’s sleep will certainly make up for that. CHI, The Spa, is also worth a visit during your stay. As well as the usual variety of treatments (facials and wraps) it offers many to balance your energies (The Healing Chakra Treatment was a particular delight, with a meditative approach that included massage, essential oils and healing crystals, all with the aim of perfectly aligning your chakras). To some this might sound unappealingly new age, but in reality you get a fantastic massage that is focused on total

81 CH_Sept_Sydney_3pp.indd 81

If you want to venture outside of the hotel then you are perfectly placed to sink a few rums at Sydney’s best new cocktail bar, The Lobo Plantation (thelobo.com.au) which is just a 10-minute walk away. Also close by (about 10 minutes by taxi) is Surry Hills. I’m tempted to equate it to Shoreditch, in a rough-area-comegood kind of way, but it is less flashy than Shoreditch (read: better). Here you’ll find countless good cocktail and wine bars, as well as plenty of bright young things with whom to party the night away. For a truly show-stopping meal, head to Marque (marquerestaurant. com.au), a Surry Hills fine dining institution, where for AUD$165 you can experience Australian fusion food of the highest order (Paroo kangaroo with beetroot and radicchio kimchi). For breakfast, bills (bills.com.au; from the team behind London staple Granger & Co) does traditional Australian with a focus on tip top ingredients. u

Only 200 yards from the water, this place really is all about the sea views – the huge glass doors of the open plan kitchen and living room offer spectacular panoramas across the bay. Lacking the glitz and glamour of some of its more high-profile neighbours, St Mawes still retains a quaint bygone charm. Walk along Marine Parade and you’ll find the local bakery serving freshly baked authentic Cornish pasties, a small arcade of shops peddling local pottery and delicacies (think clotted cream

fudge and shortbread) and several pubs with a view of the trawlers and crabbing boats bobbing on the tide. In the other direction lies St Mawes Castle, a stony legacy of Henry VIII dating back to 1538, mainly worth visiting for its uninterrupted views across the bay. Continue past the castle and carry on round the coast, walking through cow-filled fields and down into secluded coves along the beach for a taste of the real Cornwall. ◆

his September will see the 11th year of the annual London Design Festival. Established to promote London’s expertise and celebrate it as a global centre for design, the Festival will encompass over 300 events and concentrate on six design districts across the capital. Its aim is to reveal an inspirational and eclectic vision of design past, present and future, and I for one cannot wait for it. Chelsea will play host to not one, but two of these design districts: the Brompton Design District and the Chelsea Design Quarter.

BROMPTON DESIGN DISTRICT

The central hub for the entire Festival, the Victoria and Albert Museum is set to host one of the Festival’s two Landmark Projects: ‘Double Space for BMW’. Magnificently displayed in the Raphael Gallery, this installation is the work of Olympic Torch designers Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, who collaborated with BMW to create a kinetic sculptural installation, in the form of two giant mirrored structures, hanging from the ceiling in the centre of the gallery. This mirrored installation will play with the observer’s view of both space and architecture, as well as distorting the viewer’s perception of the Raphael cartoons, hanging on the overlooking walls.

ROCA GALLERY LONDON

One could in fact spend all nine days of the Festival at the V&A, housing as it will, a cornucopia of installations and a series of themed events and workshops. Included in this is Officine Panerai’s time-focussed collaboration with designer Felix de Pass, graphic designer Michael Montgomery and ceramicist Ian McIntyre. This exhibit will be displayed in a hidden location in the museum. In addition to this, the designers’ fantasy, ‘The Wish List’ – an exhibition of objects created by various architects and designers – will be on display too, focusing on things the contributing artists have always wanted to have at home, but have never found. ‘Human Nature’, an Art Nouveau-inspired installation by Jeremy Maxwell Wintrebert (made in collaboration with leading glass specialist, the Vessel Gallery) will also be on show, in the entrance to the Glass Galleries. Many shops, too, will open their doors to the Festival in the South Kensingtoncentred Brompton Design District, taking inspiration from this year’s theme: the Craft of Design. Harrods will host a ‘design trail’, running through the shop for the duration of the Festival. Visitors to the department store will be provided with a

trail map which will guide them through homeware collections, brand pop-ups and new collaborations. One of the most interesting of which will be the launch of Zaha Hadid’s first homewares collection, reflecting her award-winning groundbreaking architectural work. Other launches include Bethan Gray’s pop-up shop featuring her good quality, natural materials, crafted with cutting edge manufacturing techniques. Similarly, the Rug Company’s collaboration with Paul Smith is one to look out for, featuring the ‘Oriental Birds’ rug. Hand-crafted for almost a year in Nepal, it is so delicate

that there are 300 individually woven knots per square inch. Cassina, Brompton Road’s contemporary design powerhouse, will host ‘Charlotte Perriand, an icon of modernity’ – an exhibition of furniture, fashion and photography to celebrate the pioneering 20th century architect. Perriand re-editions will be on display too and the limited edition LC4 CP chaiselongue by Le Corbusier, P. Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand also. At cutting edge interior design store Mint, founder Lina Kanafani will curate ‘Elements of Craft’, an exhibition focusing on the influence of craft. Classic designs from the Seventies and Eighties, particularly by Angelo Mangiarotti and Roy McMakin, will be seen alongside works by over 40 established and emerging designers. The Map House, London’s oldest antiquarian map seller, will collaborate with Icelandic artist Kristjana S. Williams to create the exhibition ‘An Explorative Reinterpretation of the Traditional Art of Maps’. Here, the art of cartography will be explored, alongside Williams’ reinterpretation of this traditional art form, through her signature collage techniques.

HOMES & INTERIORS / DESIGN FESTIVAL Brompton Bicycle will be working from Squint Limited to showcase their new collection of bicycles. Demonstrating their manufacturing techniques, they are set to offer visitors the opportunity to design and purchase their very own unique and bespoke bicycle, whilst leading various curated bike rides around the area. Alongside this, Squint Limited are launching their new and quite extraordinary velvet table top collection: a variety of products – ranging from marble bookends and classical candlesticks, to ceramic sculptures and glass vases – re-imagined and covered in velvet. Intriguing!

CHELSEA DESIGN QUARTER

Meanwhile, over in the Chelsea Design Quarter, Roca London Gallery will be showcasing ‘Urban Plunge: New Designs for Natural Swimming in our Cities’, an environmental and forward-thinking exhibition curated by Jane Withers for Wonderwater Café London. This exhibition will show, through drawings, models, photographs and panel discussions, a selection of projects in which urban rivers and harbours have been, or will be, transformed into public swimming areas. These will include Copenhagen’s Habour Baths, and New York’s + POOL – a proposed creation of the world’s first river water-filtering

floating swimming pool to be situated in the middle of the East River in New York City. Two London-based projects will also be showcased: Thames Baths, a plan for a series of bathing stations in the Thames, and the King’s Cross Pond Club, a temporary swimming pool on a brownfield site in the King’s Cross Central development, the otherwise apparently insalubrious water to be filtered naturally by plants. The exhibition will look at the ways in which we use and abuse water, and also incorporate the recent trend for ‘natural swimming’ within urban environments. It aims to consider the role designers can play in sustainable water environments, as well as the ways in which water can enrich city living. For some design didacticism, head to other parts of the Chelsea Design Quarter – such as the cluster of interior design showrooms found at the southern end of the King’s Road and around Lots Road, where various showrooms will open their doors to host talks on 15th September. John Cullen Lighting will bring together experienced lighting designers to impart advice about the latest energy saving techniques. Waterworks will host speakers to advise on luxury in the bathroom, whilst Drummonds will host a ‘Design Inspiration Evening’ (on 15th September) during which four designers

THE EXHIBITION will LOOK at the ways in which we USE and ABUSE water – Susie Atkinson, Martin Brudnizki, Guy Goodfellow and Maurizio Pellizzoni – will discuss inspirational places and works of art, which have helped shape their individual styles. Elsewhere in the Chelsea Design Quarter, The Rug Company will exhibit their new collections featuring collaborations with leading fashion designers, including Diane von Furstenberg, Vivienne Westwood, Matthew Williamson and Jonathan Saunders. Designers Guild will launch no fewer than 17 new fabric and wallpaper collections, drawing inspiration from both Indian palaces and Italian palazzos and many places in-between. To celebrate its 50th anniversary, Habitat will showcase the ‘Design Reunion’, an exhibition curated by Polly Dickens, Habitat’s Creative Director, which will exhibit work from six of London’s most respected designers. The London Design Festival is set to bring design history and innovation to the heart of Chelsea, giving us all the opportunity to fill our houses and minds with current trends and classic craftsmanship from yesteryear. The only drawback is there is so much to see (and learn) that even the keenest design aficionado will struggle to pack it all in. I shall try my very best to. u London Design Festival runs from 13-21 September; londondesignfestival.com

KIDS & EDUCATION / SCHOOL TALK

Manners do Matter When the editor of Tatler said that politeness and respect are as important as good grades, her comments struck a chord

G

ood manners are as important as good grades when it comes to forging a successful career. So Kate Reardon, editor of society bible Tatler, told a group of teenage girls this year. In a speech at Westonbirt School (Gloucestershire), Reardon said, ‘It doesn’t matter how many A-levels you have, what kind of a degree you have, if you have good manners, people will like you...if they like you they will help you. I’m not talking about using the right spoon for soup or eating asparagus with your left hand. I'm talking about…making people you interact with feel valued.’ Her comments prompted a storm in a media tea cup; they were judged ‘anti-feminist’ but among sniping about Reardon’s own privileged upbringing (Bute House, Cheltenham Ladies College, Stowe) there was also acknowledgement that she had raised an important issue. Reardon’s speech comes amid growing concerns that generation text are not fit for purpose in the working world. School leavers may have top notch computing skills but seem to lack some of the basic social skills such as good manners and the ability to hold a conversation. In the report by Barclays earlier this year, personal presentation, punctuality and decent manners were all highlighted as problems for some young people. 43% of business leaders said young people failed to understand when it was appropriate to use a mobile phone or when to take a break, and for how long. A worrying 55% said school leavers were unable to manage conversations properly when calling clients or suppliers. Employers and parents will nod in

Wo r d s A m a n d a C o n s ta n c e

GENERATION TEXT are NOT FIT for PURPOSE in the WORKING WORLD recognition at Reardon’s comments. Commenting on Reardon’s speech in the The Daily Telegraph, Rowan Pelling said: ‘When I ran a publishing business, I blackballed any job applicant too entitled or offhand to show consideration for others. I despaired of the workexperience graduate with a First and editorship of the student paper...who was too grand to make tea, photocopy or ask for advice, despite his atrocious typos.’ Pelling adds that she knows a financier who conducts all his interviews over lunch to see if candidates have table manners and are capable of conversation beyond football and celebrity. ‘No one wants to spend two thirds of their day surrounded by uncouth braggarts.’ Anthony Seldon, the

99 CH_Sept_Education.indd 99

pioneering head of Wellington College, has already called for schools to hold lessons in manners, punctuality and tidiness. And An All-Party Parliamentary Group on Social Mobility said earlier this year that schools need to place greater emphasis on the ‘soft skills’ such as resilience, empathy and selfcontrol. It recommended giving all pupils a school-leaving certificate to mark out their achievements in extra-curricular activities and work experience. In other words, there is a recognition that good old fashioned ‘character building’ needs to find its way back onto the curriculum, particularly in state schools where it has often given way to a relentless academic curriculum. In a report earlier this year, the Confederation of British Industry spoke of its concern that ‘schools were turning into exam factories...churning out young people who are not sufficiently prepared for life outside the school.’ Applauding the changes to the A-level system, the CBI said the business world wants ‘young people who have been academically stretched, but who also display a set of behaviours and attitudes that are vital for success, including determination, optimism and emotional intelligence.’ Reardon has her own tips for success. She urged the Westonbirt girls, ‘Never hide behind a computer or mobile phone’ and to understand the importance of eye contact. She also told them to use confident self-expression, to rigorously research any prospective company before being interviewed and to do as much work experience as possible. And above all: ‘Never underestimate the value of good manners. I can count on one hand the number of people who wrote me a thank you letter after having an interview and I gave almost all of them a job.’ ◆

Property Showcase LOWDOWN FOR LANDLORDS

How do I know I am getting a good tenant?

T

he truth is, no one can predict exactly how a tenant is going to behave once a tenancy has started, but there are a few preventative steps to take as a landlord to ensure that not only are you finding a quality tenant(s), but they move into the tenancy with a positive attitude. Firstly, ensure your agent uses a reputable referencing company to carry out credit checks and obtains all the correct information that enables you to make an informed decision. Don’t be afraid to ask your agent if you have questions surrounding their viability. Secondly, meet your tenants. This is the human element of the process that enables a tenant to feel that they are moving into someone else’s home or prize asset and not just bricks and mortar that no one cares about. Developing a good relationship with your tenant from the get go is paramount.

blossomed cherry, three kanzans, ferns, primulas and a mossy bank. The roots were in dustbins and trees and flowers entirely hide the front of the building.

Best place to invest? At this time of year as we drag ourselves back to work, thoughts often fondly turn to holiday homes. However, resale time scales can vary; maintenance costs are high and realistically how often will you enjoy your time there? It is best to rent and look for your investment closer to home.

The toughest sale and why? An American purchasing a substantial five bedroom Chelsea house without seeing it. Despite my best advice he couldn't be persuaded to fly over or engage a second independent opinion. His wife and children were the first to see it when they collected the keys and thankfully they loved it!

The most interesting property I have been involved in is... The former home of the late Lady Wynne-Jones in Elystan Place, fondly known as the ‘Bird House’. Her house off the green hardly had space to put an empty milk bottle between the house and the pavement, but she had planted a willow tree, a white-

You can now add personalised notes to any of the properties for sale or to rent listed on PrimeLocation to help remind you of any questions or notes from viewings. And, if you have decided that certain properties just aren't right for you, you can now hide them from your future property searches on PrimeLocation. The INSIDE SCOOP of NEWS in your area Rupert Collingwood reviews the Empty Property Premium Tax RUPERT COLLINGWOOD

London Management Company 020 7193 9979; thelondonmanagementcompany.com

A

ccording to a recent BBC London news report, Rupert panders to the privilege and…“can’t understand why we want to deter rich foreign owners” from buying in London. This was the case against me when interviewed on the topic of the Empty Property Premium Tax. For those of you unaware of this rather minor piece of legislation, it enables local authorities to charge 150% of council tax on homes left “unoccupied and unfurnished for 2 years or more”. Currently 7 London councils are yet to use this power including the Royal Borough and Westminster. The reality is that this tax has little or no chance of effecting any real change in the London housing market either by deterring “foreign owners” or enabling the building of more homes by Local Authorities. Let us look at some example figures. In the report I was interviewed inside 3 Glynde Mews, Knightsbridge,

The Countryside is coming to town – without the mud!

T

he inaugural Country Life Fair will bring the best of British rural life to town – in the beautiful grounds of Fulham Palace, SW6

currently on with Kaye and Carrey at £3.6m, which pays £1,786.08pa in council tax. Now assuming that the property was left unoccupied and substantially unfurnished for 2 years (an occupation of just 6 weeks resets this clock) the council tax increase would be a grand total of £893.04 extra per year. To put this into context it would take

on 27th and 28th September. Inspired by Country Life magazine, the fair will have something for all country-minded townies, from the green-fingered to the country pursuit enthusiast to the gourmet and bon viveur! An eclectic range of 200 exhibitors, including luxury heritage brands, designers, property and land agents, artists and artisans will be displaying, explaining

127 NEWS.2.indd 3

282 years for this council tax increase to generate the same amount as the stamp duty raised by the sale of that property to a “foreign owner”. So as it turns out, the BBC was absolutely right, I cannot understand why “we” would want to deter rich foreign owners from buying in London especially for £74.42 a month.

and selling their wares from country pursuits accessories, tweeds, jewellery, cashmere and leather goods to antiques, sculptures, home wares and garden furniture to fine wines, bespoke gins and a plethora of speciality foods. Visitors will have the opportunity to relax and socialise in the Country Life Fair outposts of the Brown Cow and Sands End pub, or over a bespoke Country Life Fair cocktail at Mr Fogg’s of Mayfair. Families will also be kept amused by the mini farm, rural activities and displays by The Kennel Club, while fashionistas will enjoy the ‘tweed to town’ catwalk shows. PROPERTY | ASK THE LETTINGS EXPERTS

Ask the Lettings Experts

Our panel of PROFESSIONALS give you the edge in the property market

1.What standard does my property have to be at before it can be rented out? The truth is every property will rent, however the length of time it takes to rent, the calibre of tenant and the amount achievable will be affected by the condition. Properties must be ‘habitable’, which ranges from ensuring the property is clean, well maintained and in good condition to complying with all legal requirements such as having a gas safety certificate. But the rental market is extremely competitive so this is just the starting point. To attract a high calibre tenant, achieve the optimum rental and let the property as quickly as possible, landlords must ensure the property is well presented, with not only good décor, attractive, contemporary furnishings but is also dressed to give the ‘wow’ factor. Only a few people can imagine what a property will look like and need to be shown the lifestyle so a property which demonstrates a lifestyle will let quicker and at a higher rent.

2.Why should I have an inventory? Having an inventory drawn up by an independent clerk can save you time and money at the end of each tenancy. An inventory reflects the true condition of the property at the start and then again at the end of each tenancy. Without the inventory or check-in and check-out report there is no independent evidence. A good inventory will be fully detailed and will have photos

attached. It will also confirm the standard of the cleaning at the start and provide a comparison at the end of the tenancy. A detailed inventory also makes any potential dispute easy to resolve. Without a fully documented inventory, should there be a dispute, the adjudicator would be very likely to favour the tenants. We consider that having a professional inventory is an essential protection for any landlord.

3.I already have two buy-to-let properties. Should I continue to expand my portfolio? If you have the money to invest, then I can think of no better investment than Prime Central London property. Currently, the lettings market is strong, but to maximise your return, it’s important to do your research first. Work with an agent who can provide the best market advice, and who has been established in the area long enough to see and understand the changes in the market over the years. Ask their advice about who's renting and the types of properties with the strongest demand. In Chelsea, demand is currently across the board, but the highest level of competition is coming from young professionals and international students, looking for studios and one-bedroom apartments up to £450 per week. We are also receiving a good number of enquiries via our Corporate & Relocations Services team from families with budgets of £2,000 per week or more,

hoping to secure a house. Regardless of the current market and seasonal variances, I would always recommend a rental investment close to transport links, as it will always rent quickly and for a good value.

4.What will you do to ensure my property is properly advertised and marketed? All our properties are subject to extensive marketing. We ensure that professional photos and floorplans are carried out before placing them on all the major portals such as Rightmove and Zoopla. We also have close relationships with corporate and international relocation agents who are informed of all new instructions and we advertise in many of the local magazines.

5. How will I receive my rental income? This depends entirely on the service you choose and what sort of tenants you end up with. Standard services are the Introduction of a tenant were the agent finds the tenants who will pay the landlord going forward directly, typically on a month by month basis. Alternatively, the agent rent collects from the tenant and pays you monthly. Corporate tenants have a tendency to pay quarterly but there are also options to pay monies upfront, be it 6 or 12 months.

PROPERTY | PRIME PURCHASE

Prime Purchase MARKET COMMENT

A busy market in Chelsea and Knightsbridge

C

orporate relocation agents are very active in the Chelsea and Knightsbridge rental market at the moment, mainly looking for homes for finance executives moving to London from the US. Unsurprisingly, most of these applicants are looking for a large family home, close to the area’s excellent schools. They’re usually happy to consider both lateral apartments and houses as long as there is plenty of space – a minimum of 2,000 sq ft. And the property must be finished to a very high spec. The summer months can see a lull in the lettings market, but this year rental demand has remained strong and we have been receiving good offers of near to, or at asking price, for many of our properties in Knightsbridge and Chelsea. There have been plenty of student applicants who have been more organised than in previous years, keen to find good rental accommodation several weeks earlier than usual as they know the best properties will have been taken by September. Anything from studios to two bedrooms properties can appeal to students with a wide range of budgets with many lets concluded during the month of July well before the September intake. One year leases are most popular, with students often requesting six month break clauses.

esigned and finished to an extremely high standard, the property is light and airy throughout and comprises two double bedrooms, a luxurious family bathroom with under floor heating and a built in TV, and a modern kitchen/reception room leading out to a private balcony. The property is located on Elsham Road, a stone’s throw from Shepherds Bush mainline station, Westfield shopping centre and Holland Park underground station (Central Line). Kensington High Street is a short walk away.

IN THEIR OWN WORDS

William Hughes-Ward Director at Marsh & Parsons, South Kensington

’ve recently noticed (again) a few entrepreneurial types out there who have taken it upon themselves to try and re-invent the estate agency business model. Most notably, a man on Dragon’s Den, and the former head of Rightmove who has rather brashly announced his latest idea is to “cut out the agent.” They all loosely revolve around the internet with the aim of putting the buyer and seller in direct contact with each other, in order to thrash out a deal themselves. Well, it was with great pleasure that I watched the Dragons ask question after question relating to the true nature of the business. Their conclusion? That the services of estate agents are still necessary and the new online model was flawed in many ways. I particularly likes Deborah Meaden’s point that, for most sellers, the number one concern was “who is going to get me the highest price…” Something the ‘entrepreneur’ had failed to recognise. I couldn’t have agreed more with Deborah, and not just because I’m an agent of 14 years myself. In fact, I recently bought and sold myself, and had it not been for the estate agents involved, both transactions would

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

ITOW.indd 124

have failed to make it to exchange of contracts for a multitude of reasons. Before you ask, yes of course I appointed Marsh & Parsons to sell my Battersea flat; they were suggesting the highest asking price and got it! As for mu purchase, it was in an area outside our coverage, but the agent certainly earned their fee. Imagine putting Wayne Rooney and Jose Mourinho in direct contact with each other, or setting Tom Cruise and Guy Ritchie up for a meeting. I suspect there would be fireworks. There are agents in all walks of life and they are essential because their role is to negotiate with both parties, in some cases make sure they don’t come to blows, and to make things happen. In my opinion, a poorly thought through web idea based purely on cost instead of value is not going to suddenly revolutionise our industry. Sure, there are good and bad agents, but people will always want someone to handle the more tricky things in life and we agents tend to handle some of the trickiest things of them all.
