Cheshire CHATTER

Ashley Rudd says farewell to summer with plenty to

excite (and scare) as autumn

rolls into town

October is when I feel absolutely in my element.

I love the crisp autumn air, anything spooky or pumpkin-flavoured, and all things orange.

The leaves turn brilliant shades of red, orange and yellow, making it the perfect time to explore Delamere Forest, a great way to spend a laid-back afternoon.

This year, I’m also going sober for October, so I’m focusing even more on the

little things that make the season unique. There are plenty of personal benefits to going sober as well. Cutting out alcohol, even for just a month, can lead to better sleep, more energy, improved concentration, and a clearer mind.

I’ll be keeping my eye on the listings for VUE Cheshire Oaks and Moonlight Flicks; they always show some Halloween classics. This time last year, I watched arguably the best vampire movie ever made and my personal favourite, The Lost Boys. There’s just something about that film, the perfect blend of horror, comedy, and 80s nostalgia.

WARMING AUTUMN FOOD

As the days get shorter, I’m already planning movie nights with the girls: lighting the new candles, sipping hot apple cider (non-alcoholic, of course), and settling in for a night of autumnal vibes. We’ll probably start with family classics like Hocus Pocus and then dive into the Scream franchise.

And let’s not forget the food. October in Cheshire is all about hearty, comforting meals. I’m already dreaming about Sunday roasts at one of the local Chester pubs. I can almost taste the slow-cooked lamb, served with a pile of roasted root vegetables and lashings of rich gravy.

So that’s my October in Cheshire – full of long walks, good food, cosy evenings, all while going sober for the month.

This month

I will be… HOMESENSE

Speaking of getting into the Halloween spirit, I’ll be raiding HomeSense for pumpkin-scented candles. There’s something about fi lling the house with that warm, spicy aroma that just screams autumn. I plan to stock up on a few different varieties – maybe some vanilla pumpkin or apple spice, too – to keep that cosy atmosphere going all month.

M&S X SIENNA MILLER

Speaking of enjoying the season, I’ve also got my eye on updating my winter wardrobe. This year, I’ve never run as quickly to M&S as I did when they released the collection with Sienna Miller.

TAKING

Cheshire Wildlife Trust have announced a special award winner

Earlier this year, Cheshire Wildlife Trust asked budding photographers to submit their photos of wildlife and wild places to be featured in their 2025 calendar: the Trust received over 360 stunning images. Award-winning wildlife photographer Ben Hall reviewed the entries and selected 12 winners and 12 runners up, which will all feature in the 2025 calendar. He also picked an overall winner: short-eared owl at Port Sunlight taken by Peter Tarpey (pictured). The calendar is now available to pre-order for just £10. All money raised will help the recovery of nature in Cheshire, so we can all enjoy seeing more of the wonderful species featured in the calendar.

Rachel Bradshaw, Digital Content Officer for Cheshire Wildlife Trust, says: “As a photographer myself, it’s always so exciting to see what people have captured and the beauty and variety nature in Cheshire has to offer. Our 2025 calendar features atmospheric landscapes, fabulous fungi and some iconic Cheshire species. We’d like to say a huge congratulations to our winning photographers and runners up. Really taking notice and soaking up wildlife and landscapes through a lens is a great way to connect ourselves more with nature.”

A full list of winners and runners up can be found on the Cheshire Wildlife Trust website. You can also see all the photos featured in the calendar at cheshirewildlifetrust.org.uk/shop

“I WANT TO MOTIVATE AND INSPIRE OTHERS”

capsule

Rachel Lugo as you haven’t seen her before… The Real Housewives of Cheshire star on her latest mission, supporting the Pink Ribbon Foundation

The last time Rachel Lugo featured within the pages of Absolutely Cheshire, she was dressed up to the nines to welcome in a Christmas issue.

It’s fair to say when we visited her for this interview, we found a very di erent look. “Many people, when they watch me on TV, will see that I’m always very glammed up. In reality, I’m with the horses and live quite an active lifestyle so I’m wearing hoodies and a lot of T-shirts – anything I can put together with my wellies, jeans or leggings and I really wanted the collection to reflect that,” she laughs.

The look today is the result of a collaboration with the Pink Ribbon Foundation, which has seen Rachel create a capsule collection. “We want everybody to proudly wear these T-shirts and hoodies, which will, in turn, support

all the charities that the Pink Ribbon Foundation supports. The designs are printed on organic cotton and renewable energy to create sustainable products that are made once worn out, keeping materials out of landfills and in the loop.

“I was so excited to do this,” Rachel smiles. “The collection is called ‘We Fight Together’ – I wanted to inspire and motivate others to check their breasts and support the cause. It was very handson, and the charity worked closely from designing the logo to choosing products and colours – we had so much fun.”

The collection includes t-shirts and hoodies to complement activewear and reflect Rachel’s everyday style. This range ensures versatility and appeal, perfect for various natural and authentic settings.

The designs are printed with Teemill, the world’s first open-access circular supply chain. Teemill uses organic cotton and renewable energy to create sustainable products that are made once worn out,

keeping materials out of landfills and in the loop. By sharing this technology, Teemill aims to end waste in the fashion industry.

Launching in October, during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the collection aims to inspire and motivate others to check their breasts and support the cause.

Rachel’s story is a powerful narrative about the impact of breast cancer on families and the critical role of awareness and support. “My Mum was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer and passed away; her own Mum, my Grandmother, also passed away from breast cancer. I brought Mum back home on the Queen Mary 2 because she didn’t want to die in America; she wanted to be back in the village, and she survived three weeks at home with all her grandchildren and children around her – it was lovely for her to be home.

“On the Real Housewives of Cheshire, my twin sister and I had BRCA gene testing to see if we carried the gene, and thankfully both were well – I also regularly attend

the breast cancer clinic at Wythenshawe for breast screenings. I’m under the family history clinic. It’s just something that’s really close to my heart because I don’t want my children to lose me.”

Rachel is full of praise for the work the Pink Ribbon Foundation does. “Many people assume that the Pink Ribbon Foundation is a huge charity, but it’s not,” she says. “There is just Lisa and three other volunteer trustees. Given their infrastructure, the work they do is just phenomenal. It’s certainly not all parties and galas. They support around 60 smaller charities and give them grants. Their job is so, so important, and it’s brilliant what Lisa and the team have accomplished. They really do support the frontline at the grassroots for all sorts of people’s needs, and it’s not just women who get breast cancer – anyone with breast tissue – and they support a wide range of people.”

Rachel’s stardom has had its downers – with the press covering her split from her husband – but this shows the positive that can come out of a show like the Real Housewives of Cheshire. “I hope viewers can see that I’m just a regular, down-toearth person who values hard work and understands the importance of money. It’s been a journey filled with sacrifices and challenges, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. While reality TV might not

always capture the full extent of my story, I hope viewers can sense I’m just a regular person navigating life’s ups and downs like everyone else. And if viewers can see that authenticity shining through, I’m doing something right. It means so much to be involved with Pink Ribbon Foundation and, you know, maybe my Mum is looking down and thinking ‘go Ray do your thing’.

“I DON'T WANT MY CHILDREN TO LOSE ME”

“Over the past five years, there have been moments when I’ve felt like I was just skimming the surface of life, struggling to find my footing amid all the changes. It hasn’t been easy for me or my children; adjusting to a new reality can be incredibly emotionally and practically challenging,” Rachel adds. “At the end of the day, we’re all just doing the best we can with the hand we’ve been dealt. Life doesn’t always follow the script we’ve written for ourselves, but that doesn’t mean we can’t find beauty and joy in the unexpected twists and turns. We may not be where we thought we’d be, but we’re exactly where we need to be, facing each day with courage and resilience. And for that, I’m incredibly proud of myself and my children.”

There’s plenty for Rachel and her fans to be excited about in addition to her work with the Pink Ribbon Foundation. “Lugo

Loves is an online interior company with a huge selection of furniture options at fantastic prices. We also have a B2B division that supplies developers with furniture packages for their rental properties, which has been really successful,” she says. “Teaming up with the nurse who has provided my aesthetics services for over four years has led to an exciting new venture: Beyond Beautiful Wellness Clinic in Liverpool. We o er medical aesthetics, accredited training courses, holistic therapy, and soon, hair transplants. We’re eagerly looking to expand into Cheshire. Content creation for social media also takes up most of my time. I have a fantastic management team behind me and work with some amazing brands. We have so many exciting projects planned for the year.” Whether looking glitzy or dressed down and mucking out with the horses, one thing is for sure: expect to continue seeing Rachel around town. “There’s no reason for me to look at moving away from Cheshire,” she finishes with a smile.

SHE LOVES MUCKING OUT WITH THE HORSES
SPORTING THE NEW COLLECTION

Raylight of

Liverpool native John Charles on how his artwork helped him overcome some of the darkest days in his life and being called the Scouse Van Gogh

Q Were you artistic as a child?

A From as early as I can remember I was always drawing. My earliest memory is having a giant A1 pad of paper and just filling every sheet with drawing after drawing. My favourite thing to draw was either Disney or Dandy characters.

Q Did you have many opportunities to explore art at a young age?

A My parents always bought me art stu , I loved using a black marker and drawing as many cartoon characters as I could. My primary school teacher Miss Lomax (now Mrs Willis) made a huge impact on my love of art. She made art fun, she made me realise maybe I had something special, like I was actually good at something. I was never involved in sports or clubs, art was my thing and she helped me realise just how much I love it. We’re still in contact to this date and I’ll forever be grateful to her, she’s a special woman.

Q Why initially was it no more than a hobby?

A I wasn’t aware of anyone who made money from art apart from your typical

famous artists, the ones I loved were all dead. One of my best friends, David, sadly passed away in 2013. He knew I had talent when it came to art and before he passed away told me I should speak to one of his friends, Danny O’Connor. He said he was an artist and that’s how he made his living. After Dave passed away I honoured his wish, reached out to Danny, went to his studio, became friends and that was the biggest inspiration for me to make it more than a hobby.

Q How do you look back on your battle with addictions?

A They were dark times. I don’t think I’m your stereotypical ‘addict’ the kind that is portrayed in the movies. I had a great upbringing. We weren’t a rich family, but we weren’t a poor family, or if we were my Mum and Dad protected me from their struggles. So, for me to turn to drink and drugs was crazy. But it shows it can happen to absolutely anyone, it’s almost impossible to escape it once it gets a grip of you, it’s slow and progressive to the point you don’t realise how deep in addiction you are. I used excuses, I had a million excuses to use

and drink, but never a real reason. Lucky for me I found AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) and CA (Cocaine Anonymous) thanks to a friend who directed me that way. I could talk about this part of my life for hours, but I’m aware you only have so many pages, so I’ll keep it short. Once I finally gave up the fight, got a sponsor and started the 12 steps, my life changed practically overnight.

Q How did art help you?

A Art became my recovery. I could incorporate messages/images to other addicts who were contemplating recovery or weren’t aware of recovery programs. Some of my art was kind of like me giving back trying to help others. It also helped me. In the past if I had a bad day, I picked up the bottle or a bag of cocaine, but now… I understand my emotions, I understand we all have good and bad days no matter who we are, and I now have an outlet –my art. I can paint angrily and create a beautiful painting. I can paint angrily and create a really dark painting. Most of the time, I’m happy and I just create art and get lost in whatever I’m painting. I can completely forget about the world,

I forget about being a husband, a dad, a son, a friend… everything. At times when I’m painting, I believe I stop ‘being’, I just am. It’s hard to explain, but art for me most of the time helps me to just be.

Q In the early days, what kind of art were you producing?

A My early days I was just recreating Disney pieces. My childhood was full of Disney, I found it e ortless, so I painted and painted Disney.

Q At what point did you think, yes, you could become a fulltime independent artist?

A I had worked as a Civil Servant for almost 20 years, and also worked a second job as a doorman for about 10 years, just to get by. From around 2014, I was earning enough money from art to drop the second job. By 2019, I felt my day job was getting in the way of my progress in the art world, I was short on time and turning down commissions or missing out on family time because I was so busy. I was on holiday

in Dubai with my wife and daughter. My wife could see that me working in an o ce was making me miserable. She just said: “Quit, send your resignation now and let’s go for it.” We were sat watching a strongman deadlift competition outside, with the Burj Khalifa in the background. I got my phone out and sent the email. Four years later, I found myself living in that exact area of Dubai as a full time artist.

Q How do you tend to create new pieces of art?

A Too many ways to mention, I’m very random at times. I can see someone in a movie, hear a lyric in a song or even at times about 5/10 seconds after putting my head on the pillow to go asleep I have very lucid dreams. I’ll wake up and tell my wife all about it and that could inspire a new painting. These dreams are in-depth and feel like they’ve been going on for days, but my wife will tell you she’d closed her eyes for about 10 seconds and I’ve had a full on dream!

Q Would you say there is a John Charles style?

A Yes, 100%. My golden lines and palette knife style is my signature. From time to time, I’ll do a full brush painting or an abstract piece. One thing I pride myself on is that I’ll paint what I like, how I like and when I like. I’m not being pigeonholed into any one genre or style.

Q Which pieces from your back catalogue are particularly important to you?

A My first Joaquin Phoenix/Joker painting. Paul Smith, the comedian purchased this o me, we’ve become great friends ever since. Around that time, my career took a huge step forward, my audience started to grow organically on social media, with invites to share the story of my recovery and art journey through the general media and on podcasts.

Q What has your art enabled you to go and do, which maybe before you would never have had those opportunities?

A I’ve met some incredible people

and got support from people I’d never expected, people like Stephen Graham, Liverpool footballer Kostas Tsmikas, boxer Paul Smith.

I now get to go into schools and universities to talk about my battles with addiction, and more importantly, talk about my recovery and how art helped my recovery.

I’ve been blessed to work with friends of mine Liz and Lee, who own a company called Motiv8. They look after children/ young adults with special education needs and disabilities. I’ve run art classes for them and seen some incredible pieces of art created by young adults, whose parents and carers weren’t aware that they could create such pieces.

Q What are you working on now?

A Right now, I’m working on a new idea for a future collection. I imagine by the time this article goes live the image will be released so I’ll let you in on it… it’s a giant painting of a gold horse’s head. I’m going to create a collection of golden images. I’m also planning a collection about my time I spent volunteering in Kenya when I was 21. August 2025 will be the 20th anniversary, so I aim to have an exhibition in place for then and with some of the proceeds, go back to Kenya and do some work with the communities I worked with back in the day.

Q An Absolutely team member called you the ‘Van Gogh of Liverpool’. How does that make you feel?

“Van Gogh is my biggest inspiration. I can relate to his mental struggles and love of painting”

A Honoured! Van Gogh is my biggest inspiration, I feel like I can relate to his mental struggles and his love for painting. I’m clean and sober, I have been for 13 years, but it doesn’t mean my life is sunshine and rainbows. I have dark days, for absolutely no reason whatsoever. Thankfully those days aren’t as common as they used to be, but it’s a part of my life that I feel I can relate to him. I don’t think that’s why people call me the Scouse Van Gogh though! It’s more likely for my textures and the explosiveness in my paintings.

Q Do you have other interests outside of art?

A Training. I love to go to the gym and lift heavy weights. Christmas movies is another hobby. I will watch Christmas movies all year round. And pizza… I love pizza!

Q How do you see the future panning out?

A I honestly feel like what people have seen is just the beginning. We hope to open our own art gallery in the very near future. It would be an art gallery/studio, an appointments only kind of place. And a little added exclusive bonus will be that those who already own an original will be allowed into the studio to see whatever I’m working on at that time.

CHARITY STARTS AT HOME

Sandbach’s Jen Graham on the joy of shopping second hand, fitting TV like a glove and her favourite Cheshire spots

Ihave spent most of my career working in the car industry, with brands like Mercedes, Porsche, Audi, BMW, and Land Rover. Along the way, I juggled running a tea shop, which turned out to be hugely successful but equally stressful alongside raising three children. Life was busy, but I always made sure to work around my kids, ensuring I had plenty of time with them.

My love a air with second-hand shopping started when I was 17. I remember stepping into a pre-loved shop for the first time, simply because I couldn’t find anything unique on the high street. There was something magical about not knowing what treasure I might uncover. That ‘thrill of the thrift’ has stayed with me ever since. The beauty of secondhand shopping is that you’re able to curate your own style with pieces that are one-ofa-kind, and there’s something so satisfying about giving items a new lease of life. Plus, shopping in charity shops gives you the added-bonus of supporting worthy causes. One of my all-time favourite buys was a YSL blazer I got for just £20 at Myton

Hospices, which I showed during my first segment on ITV’s This Morning. I’ve also found a gorgeous suit at St Luke’s, which felt like it was made for me, and even a Hermes purse for £25. Rummaging through charity shops, you’re bound to uncover gems like that – it’s all part of the fun!

My journey as Charity Shop Girl was really inspired by my daughter Stella. I’d been made redundant during COVID and was pregnant with my daughter Joni at the time, and it was Stella who encouraged me to start sharing my charity shop finds and style online. In the early days, I was sharing everything – what I was finding, what I was wearing, and how I was styling di erent pieces. It wasn’t long before I realised how much people were connecting with what I was doing. Once I started o ering styling tips, like how to wear one item in three di erent ways, it really took o . Soon, people were messaging me about their favourite charity shops, and it became clear that there was a whole community of people who shared my passion for second-hand shopping.

The timing was just right, too. With COVID making people more conscious about money and sustainability, people were looking for ways to feel good without spending a fortune. Charity Shop Girl tapped into that need perfectly – I was able to show people how to look great on a budget while making sustainable choices and supporting charities.

A couple of years in, I started getting opportunities on television. It felt like a natural fit for me, as charity shopping is something I’m so passionate about. I love being able to use that platform to show a wider audience how amazing charity shops are. And I’ve always been determined to be myself, whether on social media or TV. I wanted people to see that I’m the same person, no matter what I’m doing.

It’s still surreal when people recognise me, especially when I’m out and about in charity shops. It doesn’t happen all the time, but when it does, it’s a strange but wonderful experience, especially for my family.

Another big part of my journey has been becoming an ambassador for Face Junkie. I was introduced to their skincare products

“I LOVE THAT YOU CAN GIVE ITEMS A NEW LEASE OF LIFE”

early on and quickly became hooked. I’ve always been passionate about skincare, and Face Junkie was a natural fit for me. When they asked me to represent the brand, it was an easy decision – we share the same values, and I love being part of their growth.

I also hold The Air Ambulance Service close to my heart. They’ve been there from the beginning of Charity Shop Girl, inviting me to their Salford shop in the early days. They were the first charity to take a chance on me as an influencer, and our partnership has grown organically since then. They’ve always supported me, and I’m thrilled to be able to give back to them in return.

Sandbach, where I’ve lived for the past 14 years, is one of my favourite places to shop. The charity shops here never let me down, and they’re nestled among lovely co ee shops, so it’s the perfect day out. St Luke’s in

Sandbach is a particular favourite of mine, and I never leave empty-handed. I’ve also got a soft spot for Nantwich, with its tenplus charity shops, and Knutsford is another great spot for a second-hand treasure hunt. As for 2024, I’m excited to keep championing second-hand fashion and pushing to remove the stigma around charity shopping. I want to continue being a voice for charity retail, inspiring more people to shop second-hand and discover incredible finds. A big challenge awaits me in November with a Sahara Trek for The Air Ambulance Service, and there are more television and radio opportunities on the horizon. It’s going to be an exciting year!

Take three

Jen Graham’s top tips when it comes to charity shopping

1. My first tip would be that you always have to be prepared to have a rummage, don’t just go in and walk around, you have to get stuck in and look in every rail and section.

2. My second tip is to create mood boards and have a good relationship with your wardrobe, so you know what you have and what you need. If you have loads of tops, then you need to go looking for items that you can buy to make a full outfit like trousers.

3. And my final tip is that you need to visit them regularly – people o en say that they don’t find anything good, but it’s o en because they’re going once in a blue moon. You have to visit regularly as they’re constantly putting new donations out.

DRAW LUCK of the

Absolutely finds out more about why the founder of Dress Cheshire in Prestbury often donates to charities and news on a very special ra e in aid of The Alzheimer’s Society

After many years and thousands of pounds-worth of designer fashions donated to both local and national charities, Christine Colbert, owner of Dress Cheshire, the pre-loved designer fashions boutique in Prestbury, is about to make a huge donation to The Alzheimer’s Society, a charity that has become very close to her heart.

“In July of this year my father passed away, after living with the devastating progressive dementia, Alzheimer’s disease,” Christine explains. “Dementia is something people just don’t talk about, certainly not ‘advanced dementia’. Until someone and their family has lived through this stage of the disease it generally goes unnoticed to the outside world. It can be a long and tortuous journey, and it’s not the same for any two people.

“My dad’s symptoms went on for years, eventually taking away his ability to walk and talk. He forgot who we were, save for the odd glimmer of a smile we got from time to time that always lifted our hearts… I left most care home visits with tears rolling down my cheeks driving home.

“The Alzheimer’s Society had been so helpful to us during his, and our, long experience of the disease and I decided that, in his honour, I wanted to raise a record amount of money for them. I had previously raised money for The Alzheimer’s Society

by running races and asking for personal sponsorship, but I began to wonder how I could utilise the amazing community of followers on social media I have gained with Dress Cheshire, and realised a brilliant way to do that was to o er a chance to win a beautiful designer handbag. I researched how to do this properly and discovered I needed a licence, and I am grateful for the lovely team at Cheshire East Council for fast tracking this through for me.”

Initially, Christine estimated she might raise around £2,000 from the proceeds of the handbag ra e, which is being held over a three-month period, with ra e tickets costing just £25, for the chance to win a Chanel bag worth £4,000. Her estimations were soon to be met, then vastly exceeded.

“I was overwhelmed with the response and ticket sales rocketed within hours of launching it on social media with a ticket selling every six minutes,” Christine says. “So far we have raised over £10,000 for the charity in just three weeks. Now, I am estimating we shall make £15,000 for the charity by the close of the draw. It’s just the best feeling.” Such has been the success of this, Christine will be donating a second bag

Christine has long donated to local charities, putting in place an arrangement with her sellers that should their items not sell within a pre-agreed period they may be donated to charity. She explains: “The donation of high-end, high-quality designer fashions and accessories, from some of the most recognised brands in the UK can be a huge boost to the sales income in charity shops, both in-store and online. Today’s shoppers are much more aware of the multitude of benefits of shopping for pre-loved clothes, whether this be in charity shops or boutiques such as my own. Not only can you refresh your wardrobe on a regular basis at far less than the cost of a high street shopping spree, but it’s a very sustainable attitude to fashion, saving perfectly wearable items from heading to landfill.”

In the years since Christine opened her popular boutique, she has worked with many local charities, including East Cheshire Hospice, The Samaritans, Barnardo’s, Oxfam, Cheshire Without

We raised enough money to fund a specialist cycle for a disabled child in Cheshire and we are really proud of that,” Christine adds. Jess Mackenzie, Alzheimer’s Society Regional Fundraiser for Cheshire, says: “It’s wonderful that Christine is ra ing this beautiful bag in memory of her Dad. Each hour people generously give to fundraise for us, every pound they donate, they’re making a life-changing di erence to people living with dementia. Alzheimer’s Society provides vital support to people living with dementia, funds groundbreaking research and campaigns to make dementia the priority it should be.”

Christine concludes: “Moving forward, now that we are licensed to sell tickets, we intend to support national charities through our ra es, and we will continue to donate unwanted designer items to our local charity shop partners.”

for the LOVE DOGS of

Absolutely meets BarbaraHanly, the founder of Soopa, to discover how the pet treat brand was born out of undying a ection

They say that some people come into your life for a reason, but for former dog groomer

Barbara Hanly, it was a tiny 1.7kg Chihuahua X Jack Russell called Lily who was to become the catalyst to transforming a kitchen table idea into a successful business.

Barbara is the founder of Soopa, an awardwinning pet treat brand, celebrating canine health and well-being through a growing range of delicious plant-based recipes inspired by her beloved dog Lily coupled with her experience as a dog groomer.

“While working as a dog groomer, I was shocked at the amount of obesity, skin and health issues I saw in dogs,” she explains. “I started looking into typical ingredients added to dog food and treats. I realised then that I did not want Lily to consume all these nasty additives and fillers and that I could do better, so I set about researching and baking.”

With Lily and her friends as eager chief taste-testers, word soon spread through friends, then friends of friends, and soon Barabra was inundated by pet parents wanting to buy her range of delicious superfood treats for their fur babies. “It was then I began to realise that maybe I was onto something special, and if Lily and her friends, old and

BARBARA WITH HAMMIE

young, big and small, approved, then this could become a successful business.”

In 2013, Barbara o cially launched Soopa, and the company has already won multiple awards. It is regularly featured in the media and currently sells across the UK, Europe, Southeast Asia, and, more recently, the USA. However, Barbara has never strayed far from her original vision despite their commercial success. “I’ve always stayed true to my original quest to create delicious treats which combine human-grade superfoods that taste good and are good for your dog’s health,” she says.

“For example, we include cranberries in a couple of our recipes. Did you know that cranberries are an excellent source

of vitamin C, known for its positive impact on digestive health and boosting immunity? Every recipe we create is designed to benefit your dog’s health and well-being.”

With a growing range of tasty o erings, the Soopa range allows pet parents to shop by age and suitability with a focus on o ering pets with restrictive health conditions, including obesity and low immunity, flavourful treats that all dogs can enjoy without compromise.

“I am always thinking about new recipes and product ideas – it’s absolutely my favourite part of my role,” Barbara smiles. “Initially, I’ll present my ideas to my team and then decide which one to develop further. Once samples are ready, we do the all-important taste test phase with our in-house canine team. After packaging is designed and printed and production is complete, you are looking at six months from start to finish. We have just released our latest range, the 'Cosy Collection', embracing traditional seasonal flavours, including Pumpkin and Cranberry, with an autumnal flavour twist, especially for this winter season.”

As an ethical pet brand, Soopa ensures that all their treats are made to human-grade standard “because we wouldn’t feed our dogs something that we couldn’t eat ourselves” – a statement that was taken quite literally when former ITV’s This Morning presenter Holly Willoughby tasted their papaya dog

chews live on the show and approved! The brand’s range of dental sticks and healthy bites are also now packaged in their 100% paper-recyclable flow-wrap packaging. But their moral standing doesn’t finish there. “We support Dogs Trust Ireland by sharing their weekly dog spotlight on our social media to help find them homes,” Barbara explains. “We have 'Soopa Heroes of the Month', where we ask people to nominate their chosen charity via our website and Instagram posts, and we pick one at random and donate £100 to that charity.”

This love of dogs is intrinsic in Barbara’s approach to business philosophy and their success, but dogs have always played a big personal part in her life. “I’ve always been a huge animal lover,” she smiles. “My first dog was a Yorkshire terrier, Beauty, whom I absolutely adored. Beauty gave me a lot of stability during a di cult childhood when I was bullied at school. My dog Lily came into my life when a friend rescued her as a stray and was trying to find her a new loving home. The first time I met her, she jumped straight into my lap, and in that instant, I knew she was coming home with me! Lily is a huge part of the Soopa story. Lily sadly passed at the end of 2022, and I still miss her every day.”

Barbara was, however, to find another sweet soul to help ease the pain of losing Lily in the form of Hammie. “My heart was broken after losing Lily, so I wasn’t even thinking about another dog when I met a lovely lady in France who rescues dogs from China and re-homes them in Europe. She showed me a photo of Hammie the night he was found, all alone on the side of the road, and a part of me knew I had found a new soulmate. I have a feeling Lily may have even sent Hammie my way! Hammie has definitely helped heal my heart. He loves his new life on the road in the west of Ireland.”

Head Chef of The Vines at Carden Park, Harri Williams, on his culinary journey from Australia to Cheshire

“I came back from travelling with a real appreciation of clean flavours”

Q Did growing up on a farm influence the chef you have become?

A It definitely influenced my decision to take this career path, and it also shapes my day-to-day choices now. How the ingredients have been produced continually inspires my menu choices. I passionately believe that cooking with seasonal produce will have such a huge impact on the flavours I can achieve. Seeing the process first-hand growing up around the farm and animals has helped me to value this. I appreciate how much e ort and work goes into being able to access a lot of products and I believe this only strengthens my ability as a chef.

Q When did you decide cooking was the career for you?

A Aside from having a strong inclination that my career was heading towards the food industry in my teenage years, it was really my work experience with Chef Graham Tinsley that solidified that it was definitely the right choice for me. After a week spent with Graham at Carden Park, he could see that I was a good fit and had a drive for the work so he o ered me an apprenticeship for when I finished school. This was my first break into the world of che ng.

Q How did Graham initially help you to kick-start your culinary career?

A Graham is a very reputable name in the industry so he was a figure that I felt lucky to have the opportunity to work with so early on. He has helped many people build their careers, many of which I have been able to help alongside him now I have the skillset too. For example, when I was working with Graham from around 18 he encouraged me to enter the Culinary Team for Wales competing in Dubai. This was quite unusual for what would be classed as a junior chef, but under his supervision we managed to take home the gold medal. He

has been a supportive figure throughout and under his guidance I have been able to build a successful career as a Chef. When I turned 21 I decided I wanted to go out and explore the world, he encouraged me to go and discover new experiences which I’m grateful for. I returned to the UK and at 24 I was Head Chef for a 2 AA Rosette Restaurant in Shrewsbury, which was a great achievement. I then came back to work with Graham when I turned 26 and I’m still here.

Q In the early days, what would you say was the most important thing you learnt?

A Striking the balance between flavour and technique, both closely rely on each other.

Q Why did you decide to go o travelling?

A From Carden Park I moved to work in Ellenborough Park Hotel in Cheltenham under Chef David Kelman. I knew I still had to get travelling out of my system, but the opportunity to work in a 3 Rosette restaurant under his guidance would be too good to miss. After a year I headed to Australia where I got the chance to gain di erent career experiences and try out new flavour combinations.

Q What was working at the Sydney Opera House like?

A A lot di erent to anything I’d experienced before. It was headed up by Matt Moran,

who is a really big name in Sydney. The set up of the restaurants was highly complex with big volumes of people visiting, which made no two days the same. I personally covered the Aria Restaurant and catering side. This meant one day I could be preparing an intimate tasting menu for six covers on a private yacht, then the next I’d be in the Opera House cooking for over 1,000 people. Even though we speak the same language, the names of the ingredients were quite di erent, like peppers would be called capsicum and spring onions are grillot. This took some getting used to. Australia was a big turning point in my career. The kitchen experience was completely di erent, with a real appreciation for the team and the industry. I think the UK has adopted this approach more in recent years which is great.

Q Did you return to the UK with a particular style of cooking?

A I came back with a real appreciation of clean flavours. Layering ingredients in a way that you can enjoy every taste. Balance and clean flavour is key.

Q How did your reunion with Graham come about?

A Graham and I are good friends with the previous Head Chef of Carden Park. When he was leaving Graham sent out

GRAHAM TINSLEY AND HARRI WILLIAMS

a message to a few of us to see if we’d be interested in the role. I joked with him asking if he’d send me a more personalised message. Straight after this we were on the phone chatting just like old times.

Q How do you two work together at Carden Park?

A We have worked together for many years, over 10 I think now, so we are really in sync but most importantly we have great respect for each other. We have a friendship outside of work. He has always been a figure in my career that has consistently supported me.

“We are all part of an exciting journey and there is a lot more to come”

Q What kind of experience are you looking to o er at The Vines?

A Currently we o er a relaxed fine dining experience. We serve classic dishes such as Beef Wellington, which is carved at the table, and Dover Sole, which we fillet in front of the guests. We also serve some modern British dishes too. Our Senior Sous Chef Cyril also brings his classic French influences from home to the menu, which created a nice balanced style.

Q What were you determined to showcase on the menu?

A Welsh Beef and Lamb – the quality is second to none. It’s because of the type of pastures they are raised on. Their diets are high clover and more wild, which has a huge e ect on the flavour.

Q Where do you source your produce from?

A We always aim to source it within the UK and as local as possible. Keeping products that are in season on the menu.

Q Is there a particular dish you are loving right now?

A Our Welsh Coast Crab is in its peak time currently so we don’t interfere with its natural flavours. We make some small enhancements with soft herbs and a little bit of citrus. We then top it with cucumber water, dill jelly with sliced apple, radishes and dressed fennel. It’s very fresh and

you taste all of the individual components of the ingredients coming through.

Q Are you involved with all the other dining options at Carden Park?

A In short, yes. We have multiple di erent eateries for di erent occasions such as our spa, afternoon tea, brasserie, golf clubhouse and more. I spend my time quite balanced between each venue, but I am always present in The Vines during the weekend opening hours. It’s the area which I am particularly passionate about, I’ve been heavily involved from the day it opened. We also have function spaces for events such as weddings and conferences which require custom menus. It’s very varied and each week is never the same – which I enjoy.

Q You have achieved plenty already, but what ambitions do you still have?

A Currently my ambition is to grow and develop what we o er here at Carden Park. We currently hold 2 Rosettes in The Vines and we’re continually looking for how we can achieve more accreditations. The hotel has had a lot of investment in the eateries and is now undergoing even more new developments with a huge room refurbishment project. We are all part of this exciting journey and there is a lot more to come.

New feel-good recipes from Yotam Ottolenghi and Helen Goh

Puttanesca-style salmon bake

Serves 4

If you make the tomato anchovy oil a day ahead here, you can then delight in the fact that a midweek supper can be on the table within 20 minutes. The fuss-free cooking method – all hail the traybake! Plus the dialled-up flavours – all hail puttanesca! – makes such a winning combination.

INGREDIENTS

• 200g fine green beans, trimmed

• 6 spring onions, cut widthways into thirds

• 200g mixed cherry tomatoes, halved

• 6 skin-on salmon fillets (about 720g)

• Salt and black pepper

Tomato anchovy oil

• 85ml olive oil

• 8 anchovies, finely chopped (25g)

• 2½ tbsp tomato paste

• 1 tsp chilli flakes

• 2 tsp coriander seeds, lightly bashed in a mortar

• 8 garlic cloves, very thinly sliced

• 2 preserved lemons, flesh and pips discarded, skin finely chopped (20g)

• 2 tsp maple syrup

Salsa

• 60g pitted Kalamata olives, halved 60g capers, roughly chopped

• 1 preserved lemon, flesh and pips discarded, skin thinly sliced (10g)

• 10g basil leaves, roughly chopped

• 10g parsley leaves, roughly chopped

• 2 tbsp olive oil; 2tsp lemon juice

METHOD

1 First make the tomato anchovy oil. Put the oil, anchovies and tomato paste into a small sauté pan and place on a medium heat. Once the mixture starts to simmer, cook for 5 minutes, stirring from time to time. Add the chilli flakes and coriander seeds and cook for another minute, until fragrant. Remove from the heat and add the garlic, preserved lemon and maple syrup. Stir to combine, then set aside to cool.

2 Preheat the oven to 220°C fan.

3 Place the beans, spring onions and tomatoes on a large, parchment-lined baking tray. Drizzle over 3 tablespoons of the tomato anchovy oil, along with ¼ teaspoon of salt and a good grind of pepper. Toss to combine and place in the oven for 12–13 minutes, until the beans and tomatoes are starting to soften and taking on a little colour. Meanwhile, arrange the salmon fillets on a plate and drizzle the remaining tomato anchovy oil (as well as all the solids) evenly over the fillets. Nestle the salmon fillets among the beans and bake for a further 8 minutes.

4 Mix all the ingredients for the salsa in a small bowl and season with pepper. Spoon half the salsa over the salmon and serve the fish warm (or at room temperature), with the rest of the salsa in a bowl.

Butter beans with roasted cherry tomatoes

Serves 4

Source the larger butter beans, or judiones, for this, if you can. They’re so er, more buttery and much creamier than the smaller ones (which come in a tin). This dish works well as part of a mezze spread, or can be eaten as it is, with crumbled feta or olives on top. Once made, the beans keep for up to 3 days in the fridge: just bring them back to room temperature before serving. The crispy tomato skins are a great thing to have around as well, to add to salads and pasta dishes. The recipe comes from a restaurant called Bar Rochford in Canberra, Australia, where they’re served with fresh green beans.

INGREDIENTS

• 500g cherry tomatoes

• 85ml olive oil

• 1 onion, finely diced (150g)

• 2 garlic cloves, thinly sliced

• 2 tsp dried oregano

• 2 tsp thyme leaves, roughly chopped

• 1 tsp fennel seeds, toasted and crushed

• 1 fresh bay leaf

• 80ml dry white wine

• 2 tsp smoked paprika

• 1 x 700g jar of butter beans, drained and rinsed

• Salt and black pepper

To serve

• 75g thick Greek-style yoghurt

• Thick slices of sourdough (or any crusty) bread, toasted

METHOD

1 Preheat the oven to 210°C fan.

2 Toss the tomatoes with 2 teaspoons of the oil and spread them on a parchment-lined baking tray. Roast for 20 minutes, until the skins have loosened and the tomatoes are soft and have shrunk a little. Remove from the oven and transfer the tomatoes, along with all their juices, to a shallow bowl to cool.

3 Re-line the baking tray with a fresh sheet of baking parchment and reduce the oven temperature to 100°C fan.

4 Once cool enough to handle, pinch the skins o the tomatoes and place the skins on the lined baking tray. Return the tray to the oven for about 45 minutes, until the skins are dry and crisp, giving them a good stir a couple of times during baking. Set the skinless tomatoes aside.

5 Put the remaining 75ml of oil into a medium saucepan and place on a medium heat. Add the onion, garlic, oregano, thyme, fennel seeds and bay leaf and cook for 10–12 minutes, until the onion has softened but has not taken on too much colour. Add the wine, simmer for 2 minutes to reduce, then add the paprika. Cook for another minute, then add the reserved tomato flesh, along with 1 teaspoon of salt. Simmer gently for about 15 minutes, stirring often so that the tomatoes break down. Add the beans and a good grind of pepper and stir to combine. Cook for a couple of minutes, just to warm through, then remove from the heat. Spread the yoghurt over a serving plate and then pile the beans on top. Crumble over the dried tomato skins, finish with a sprinkling of thyme leaves and serve.

“There are two camps when it comes to potato salad: camp mayo and camp oil/broth”

Verena’s potato salad

Serves 4

Growing up in Germany, Verena remembers two camps when it came to potato salad: camp mayo and camp oil/broth. This is an oil/ broth-based version, more prevalent in the southern parts of Germany, specifically Swabia and Bavaria. It’s less heavy and claggy than the mayo variety and gets its creaminess from the starch released by the potatoes as they sit for a couple of hours in the warm broth. We’ve strayed from tradition and added some pancetta (because, why not . . . ) and a welcome freshness from some chopped cucumber.

INGREDIENTS

• 500g Pink Fir or Charlotte (or other waxy) potatoes

• 75ml olive oil

• 1 small onion, finely chopped (125g)

• 1 garlic clove, crushed

• 175ml chicken stock

• 2 tsp Dijon mustard

• 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar

• ½ tsp black peppercorns, coarsely crushed in a pestle and mortar

• 15g chives: 10g finely chopped and 5g cut into 1½cm lengths

• 75g pack of diced smoked pancetta

• 1 tsp paprika

• ¼ cucumber, sliced lengthways, deseeded and cut into ½cm dice (100g)

• Salt METHOD

1 Put the potatoes into a medium saucepan, for which you have a lid. Add just enough water to cover, salt generously and place on a mediumhigh heat. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat to medium-low and cook, covered, for 20–25 minutes, until just tender. Drain and, once cool enough to handle, remove the skins from the potatoes and slice into ½cm-thick rounds. Set aside in a medium bowl.

1 Put 2 tablespoons of the oil into a medium sauté pan and place on a medium heat. Add the onion and cook for 12–15 minutes, stirring regularly, until caramelised. Add the garlic and stock, bring to a simmer, then remove from the heat. Add the mustard, vinegar, 1¼ teaspoons of salt, the pepper and another 2 tablespoons of oil. Whisk to combine, then pour the mixture over the potatoes. Mix gently but thoroughly: it will look wet (and some of the potatoes will break up), but this is normal. Set aside for about 2 hours, for the potatoes to soak up about half the broth, and then stir in the finely chopped chives.

2 Meanwhile, wipe clean the sauté pan and place on a medium-high heat.

Add the pancetta, reduce the heat to medium-low and cook for 10–12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the pancetta is crispy. Using a slotted spoon, transfer to a plate lined with kitchen paper – leave about 1 tablespoon of the fat in the pan – and set aside. Once cool, finely chop the pancetta into crumbs.

3 Add the remaining tablespoon of oil to the fat in the pan, along with the paprika. Stir for 30 seconds or so, until fragrant, then remove from the heat.

4 When ready to serve, fold the cucumber into the potato salad and transfer to a serving plate. Scatter over the pancetta crumbs, along with the cut chives. Spoon over the paprika oil and serve.

Anything’s

The story of how a five-bedroom family home in Prestbury was transformed into a vibrant family retreat

Emmie B Interiors took on a complete remodel and redesign of a fivebedroom home in Prestbury to create a luxurious yet comfortable family home. Rich mauve tones and highend finishes were incorporated throughout to cultivate warmth and elegance. The whimsical imagination room and state-of-the-art cinema room cater to family entertainment and quality time. The result is a vibrant, bespoke interior that reflects the homeowner’s personality and lifestyle.

Absolutely Cheshire was keen on discovering more about the thinking behind the project and the design touches, so the founder of Emmie B Interiors, Lisa Barnes, tells us more.

Q Before we talk about the Prestbury project, can you tell us a little about the history behind Emmie B?

A My love of interiors started at a young

age and as I got older I developed a real flair for design. My parents used to let me restyle my own bedroom and choose my own wallcoverings, window dressing and accessories. I suppose looking back, this is where my passion for interiors came from.

One of my first jobs was working for Laura Ashley on the shop floor from where I progressed to Design Assistant and then Design Centre Manager. It gave me indepth knowledge of how the interior design industry worked and how to create a cohesive aesthetic design by blending patterns, colours, and textures. I then worked for two other interior design companies before I decided to take the big leap and go it alone.

Emmie B Interiors is named after my daughter Emily who we often call ‘Emmie’. Launching my own business was a great decision because it combines my passion for both interior design and meeting people. I absolutely love it! Thirteen years on and we now have a talented team of three interior designers and two support staff. Our spacious design studio, nestled in the picturesque Cheshire countryside,

provides an inspiring environment for our team and a place where clients can visit to view our extensive sample collection.

Q When Emmie B was launched, how did you want to be different?

A I’ve always believed that interior design should be accessible to everyone as it is ultimately about making a home look amazing and feel comfortable, whatever your budget. I also want every project to have its own style that’s unique and personal. Understanding what’s important to a client, how they live, relax and move within the space, and being able to create a tranquil, comfortable and welcoming environment they always love to come home to is our ultimate goal.

Q Have you always been based in Cheshire and what do you love about being here?

A I was born in Lancashire, but moved to Cheshire 20 years ago. I love the countryside, the beautiful walks, and the fact we have several major cities that are easily accessible. It really is a great place to live, work and raise a family.

Q Let's move on to the Prestbury project. You had worked with the clients previously hadn’t you?

A I first worked with the client back in 2015 when they lived in Adlington, Cheshire. We completely transformed their home there. Shortly after, they sold their business and the property and moved to Prestbury. Their new house was on a superb plot and had incredible potential, although in need of full renovation. As soon as we looked around, we could see the endless possibilities of what could be achieved.

Q Where did you start with the plans?

A The property was very dated so we knew that some structural work was needed before we could start on the design. We worked closely with Cranage Construction to completely strip back the property, including rewiring throughout, installation of new plumbing and heating, replastering and replacement of all windows. Underfloor heating was installed throughout the ground floor.

In order to extend the living area, convert the existing garage into a cinema room and build the detached garage together with extensive external works, full planning permission was required.

To achieve a modern and more contemporary family living area, we opened up the ground floor by knocking down the wall between the kitchen and dining room, making it a very large, welcoming and functional open plan living space.

We could see the possibilities of what could be achieved

Q What were the biggest challenges?

A The property is located along a very narrow road and the drive had a significant incline, which made deliveries and unloading of materials a challenge. For example, the large steel section that supported the bifold door openings was extremely heavy so we had to come up with appropriate solutions to overcome this.

The installation of a bespoke curved staircase, which serves as a stunning feature to the property, was also extremely difficult. In order to achieve the design requirements of the curved stairs and meet building regulations compliance, the stairs had to be fully repositioned within the original opening.

Q Can you tell us about the remodelling of the ground floor?

A The existing double garage with a mezzanine was converted into a cinema room, using the mezzanine level for a games room with a car simulator. We moved the study to the existing family room which allowed easy access to the cinema room and turned the existing study into a cloakroom. The pièce de résistance is undoubtedly the undulating staircase.

Q How did you approach the look and feel of the bedrooms?

A The client wanted the bedrooms to be elegant and luxurious, keeping the same rich mauve tones as their previous property. This also meant that some existing newly acquired furniture could be reused and incorporated into the new scheme.

We converted one of the six bedrooms into a luxurious dressing room with an island, which adjoins the master bedroom. It makes this room a real standout feature of the property, complete with its own seating, elegant vanity area and a spa inspired en-suite.

We also designed a bedroom specifically for their granddaughters who frequently stay over and who were involved in the design, colour choices and accessories.

Q How did you go about ensuring the kitchen is truly the heart of the home?

A The large space allowed us to create both formal and informal dining areas, as well as a comfortable seating area where they could watch television and look out over their beautifully manicured garden.

The client’s loved the idea of banquette seating running along the island so their grandchildren could stand on it having fun

The clients trusted our designs

baking with their grandma. A specialist kitchen company, known for clean lines and outstanding craftsmanship, was chosen and featured an integrated breakfast pantry, Miele appliances and an adjoining utility room with a floor-to-ceiling wine fridge

Q We love the whimsical imagination room – what inspired that?

A Our clients wanted a room dedicated to arts and crafts activities where time could be spent playing with their granddaughters who named it the imagination room. We built custom cabinetry to store away all the craft materials and designed a bespoke made-tomeasure desk for craft-making and sewing.

Q Why is it perfect for children to play in?

A It’s nestled in the eaves above the garage, making it the perfect little play hideaway for children. The back wall features a vibrant wallcovering of wildflowers and butterflies, setting the scene for endless imaginary adventures.

The most magical thing about this room is that it can be accessed from a secret door in the granddaughter’s bedroom. It really does add a touch of adventure that’s special to them whenever they stay.

Q Why was the decision made to convert the garage into a cinema room?

A Being avid Manchester United fans, the clients wanted a large screen to watch football on those days they couldn’t attend the

matches. They also wanted a mini-home cinema to watch films and create a real sense of being at the movies.

The obvious option was to convert the garage into this room, extending the downstairs floor area and then build a separate garage within the grounds.

Q How did you deck that out?

A We wanted this room to offer the ultimate cinema style experience, featuring leather reclining cinema seats, a starlight LED ceiling, pathway lighting on the floor, a soft velvety plush carpet, acoustic wallcovering and bespoke cabinetry to house all the equipment, a drinks fridge and not forgetting the all-important popcorn machine!

Q What other design touches did you implement inside the home?

A We retained part of the wall between the kitchen and diner to house an amazingly realistic vertical double sided gas fire for added comfort and to create visual interest.

High-quality flooring to unify the new kitchen, living and dining areas was chosen. Careful coordination of tiles, paint colours, wallpaper and finishes tied the whole space together seamlessly.

Statement lighting was also a major consideration for the property. Fittings that were proportionate to the respective spaces and beautiful as well as functional were important to the overall look and ambience.

Q We don’t often write about an exterior transformation too – what did that entail?

A Every exterior detail, including the drainpipes, facia boards and a brand new resin driveway, were all thoughtfully considered to provide a cohesive look and seamless finish throughout the property.

Q Do you have a favourite element of the project?

A The clients completely trusted our designs and were always so enthusiastic and excited by our proposed plans and ideas. I also loved that moment of ‘handing the home back’ to the clients. I got such a thrill from seeing their delight and joy with the transformation of their home and that they felt the end results far exceeded their expectations.

Passion PROJECTS

Charlotte Findlater offers

a window into her working world and why the future is looking exciting

Q What are some of the projects you have completed this year and how do they showcase your approach to design?

A So far this year, we have completed three projects, one that particularly stands out is the significant enhancement of a traditional Lakeland home, including the reroofing, extension and re-modelling of a kitchen, garden room and laundry along with the creation of a large new entrance hall and installation of new windows and doors throughout.

Our philosophy is rooted in harmonizing the simplicity of natural and organic elements with a rigorous attention to detail. This synthesis goes beyond aesthetic appeal, aiming to create environments that resonate emotionally and leave a lasting impact on all who experience them. A cornerstone of our ethos is our dedication to regenerative design and eco-friendliness. This commit-

ment is vividly brought to life through our extensive use of sourcing natural materials, often salvaged from old structures and imbuing spaces with antiques. This not only gives new life to discarded materials, but also introduces eco-conscious elegance into homes, second residences and projects alike.

For example we incorporated a bespoke copper worksurface into the kitchen island – copper is a natural material which is antimicrobial and can be recycled upon reaching the end of its current life. Natural local slate worktops were installed and we chose to mix accoya laminated with oak for our windows. The accoya gave our windows structural stability whilst being able to enjoy the beauty of oak from within the home.

Many of the elements we used for styling are antique pieces or artisan crafted. We champion a slow approach to design which we believe translates into longevity.

Q What projects are you currently working on that really stand out for you?

A We do enjoy each and every project we take on as we are selective of those we do, if the client or the project does not align with our ethos, then we do not undertake them. We have a very interesting and challenging project in Menorca which is a UNESCO World Biosphere. This project is the full renovation of an existing large villa including full infrastructure upgrading, significant extensions, a fabulous outside ‘living party terrace’ including new swimming pool and full landscaping of the whole plot. The Mediterranean planting scheme is an aspect of the project that we are very excited about, understanding the climate and encouraging

more bio-diversity into the garden. Whilst we have designed and specified every aspect of the project, aligning with our ethos, we have assembled a fantastic local team who will carry out the work overseen by our team and sought as many of the materials from the island, connecting with very talented artisans for bespoke artwork, ceramics, fabrics and carpentry etc.

Q How do your early ideas tend to form?

A Our design journey always starts with a series of words which are unique to each and every project, and our ultimate inspiration is mother nature.

We always seek to connect the project to its locale, rooting it into its environment, infusing each and every aspect of the project with natural materials, artisan crafted pieces and antiques. Our buildings are soulful, healthy and infused with a tranquil ambiance. Our goal is to encourage a slow down, to connect people to nature and natural materials and to tell our clients authentic stories.

Q What are you looking forward to?

A Seeing the completion of aspects of some projects, typically projects last anywhere between a year and often up to two. Starting new projects and being inspired by the artisans we meet along our journey, my wonderful team. Our greatest pleasure is always handing across finished projects to our fabulous clients, to see them discover their new homes or spaces for the first time. Knowing that we have exceeded their brief is something that we are very proud of and always strive to achieve!

Exploring the design intricacies of this Tudor Oak kitchen by Tom

Howley

Upon entering this recently completed Altrincham-based Tom Howley kitchen, you are welcomed by a harmonious blend of rich textures, elegant neutrals, and characterful design details, which create a visually stunning and practical environment for everyday living.

The island, undoubtedly the heart of this kitchen, steals the show. Strategically positioned to unify the entire space, it seamlessly intertwines form and function. It serves as a multifunctional haven with deep drawers perfect for organising kitchenware, social seating, beautifully crafted wine bins, and ample workspace. The stunning craftsmanship of the Tudor Oak finish creates a captivating two-toned aesthetic when paired with the surrounding lighter cabinetry.

Chocolatey wood tones imbue the space with a timeless warmth

The kitchen features specific zones centred around the island: a spacious cook zone, an entertainment hub with a bespoke bar, and a functional cleaning zone complete with a Quooker boiling water tap, dishwasher, and integrated bins.

On one side of the island lies the cooking zone, featuring an impressive Lacanche range with a mirrored splashback behind that reflects light and activity within the space. In this area, you’ll also find ample storage for culinary essentials.

The sink run is just as impressive, positioned on the opposite side of the island.

A Shaws of Darwen sink paired with the Quooker tap provides a touch of modern luxury, while the Compac Calacatta Gold splashback injects a dose of visual interest. Glazed cabinetry above the sink area breaks the monotony of solid doors, offering a glimpse into a curated collection of prized possessions.

Behind the doors of this stunning kitchen lay an array of storage solutions designed to make everyday tasks easier. One standout feature is the breakfast bi-fold cabinet flanking the sink area. It offers easy access to an integrated Miele microwave and morning essentials while maintaining a sleek, clean look. On the opposite side, a drinks cabinet with a mirrored back and glass shelves elevates the entertaining space, perfect for storing and displaying fine beverages and accessories.

Darker, traditional woods are experiencing a well-deserved resurgence with their dynamic appeal. This Tudor Oak kitchen embraces the trend whole-heartedly. Deep, chocolatey wood tones imbue the space with a timeless warmth and charm that seamlessly blend old-world appeal with modern sensibilities.

The surrounding cabinetry, painted in Tom Howley’s exclusive “Oyster” shade, provides a serene backdrop that allows the darker Tudor Oak kitchen island to take centre stage. Polished nickel cup and knob handles add a touch of classic elegance.

The beautiful Compac Calacatta Gold worktop elevates the space, while bespoke chairs, upholstered in luxurious woven fabric with delicate pale leather details, offer both comfort and style. Throughout the kitchen, metallic and monochrome décor elements contribute to a sleek, contemporary ambience.

Sofology Liverpool pick out six of the best looks for the living

room this autumn

From the timeless elegance of classic, period styling, through to the clean lines and artless use of colour found in contemporary design, there is an abundance of ways to create your dream living room. With so much inspiration at our fingertips, designing coherent and authentic spaces can be a challenge. This season’s trends serve as a starting point to find your style. They collectively illustrate the power of careful editing and highlight the different ways in which we can interact with our homes. A good design framework provides structure, so you can build a reflection of your taste and imagination whilst factoring in the practicalities of life and the need for contemplative spaces. In terms of both comfort and aesthetics, the sofa is central to our living rooms. It’s the first place we head to when we get home, as well as providing an anchor for successful design. It’s always important to start with the basics. Balance style,

Inspired by the warming colours of autumn, such as rust, cinnamon and ochre, this elegant scheme pairs semiformal upholstery with bespoke cabinetry and artisan lighting, to create a look that delivers elegance and sophistication whilst feeling honed and homely.

“Settle in for cosy nights ahead and reimagine a classic autumnal aesthetic, with a mix of rust, cinnamon, ochre and terracotta shades to achieve a smarter and more structured living room style,” Gina adds on the look. “Work with a terracotta palate in an imaginative way, layering a tonal scheme so that deep rich hues play off lighter and fresher colours to provide contrast.”

“Luxe hotel-inspired decor continues to be a popular trend,” Gina says, “and getting it right is about bold design, colour and curves. Luxamalism is a concise, lessis-more approach to elevating a living space, using standout furniture pieces to achieve a chic scheme. Consider armchairs in unusual shapes that deliver cosseting comfort and designer lines. functionality and proportion, using your chosen colours, materials and shapes as a springboard to build harmonious interplay with the other elements of your design.

Whilst continuity forms the backbone of a stylish space, personalisation lends character. Whether you are an art lover, avid reader or seasoned traveller, always remember to overlay elements that truly resonate with your unique style, so you always feel at home on a sofa you love.

Here are some of the living room trends heading our way this autumn, and Gisela Lancaster, Head of Buying at Sofology, explains a little more about what to expect.

The dopamine trend gets a grown up makeover

DOPAMINE HIT

This season, the dopamine trend gets a grown up makeover. Tactile leather sofas, paired with layers of beautiful dark wood and smart fitted window dressings, are framed against a cosy peach and apricot backdrop. Hints of cobalt blue bring the feel good factor to this chic design.

“Standout accent chairs often allow us to be playful, and when paired with different styles of upholstery, provide a chic and designer feel,” Gina says. “Look for more subtle shades that deliver a similar feel-good vibe, such as cosy peach decor framing a gallery wall with layers of beautiful dark wood. Small hits of energetic colour, such as cobalt blue, help to further join the dots and provide an incredibly tasteful dopamine hit.”

LUXAMALISM

Our homes often cry out for a more cosseting approach and curvaceous, sculptural designs are the perfect solution. Root your-

“Opt for rich colours in sumptuous and tactile fabrics,” she adds, “such as plush velvets, boucle or even faux fur, to offer a touch of luxury. Design elements, such as curves and fluting, can also maximise comfort whilst making an impact visually, enhancing the ambiance of a space and injecting individuality into the room.”

BOUJI BOHO

An evolution of the boho style and perfect for more modern spaces, robust shapes meet rich colour and patterns, generating a perfect balance of style and comfort. “The secret to open plan living is ensuring that each space retains its own character, whilst the overall design feels connected and coherent,” Gina says. “Removing walls is no longer the only option when it comes to opening up our living spaces. Internal crittall doors and look throughs into other spaces are a clever way to create cosy spaces in a bigger footprint. Design a relaxed flow through the home with a boho style that can be woven into a modern kitchen and living space, with comfortable upholstery and carefully selected accessories and prints.”

Combat winter blues with botanical therapy

WORK-LIFE BALANCE

Conventional delineation of our living spaces has changed markedly over the last few years. Finding a work-life balance can be quite the conundrum. Internal glazing offers a stylish way to divide a room, whilst a statement sofa facing away from your home office offers a comforting escape at the end of the day.

“Zoning with the placement of a statement sofa to create two distinct areas is easy for most people to try, whilst internal glazing offers a stylish way to divide any room,” Gina suggests. “Allowing as much light into a busy room also helps to maximise space, with layered lighting in darker months further underpinning the different functions of each area, and spotlighting a comforting escape at the end of each day.”

WINTER TROPICS

Stave off the winter blues with a stylish nod to the lush vegetation and alluring landscapes of far-flung lands. Textural upholstery, in uplifting Prussian blue velvet and lush fern green woven chenille, spark moments of joy alongside zingy lighting fixtures, woollen Welsh blankets and artwork to bring a feeling of winter warmth and a personalised feel to the space.

“Combat winter blues with an injection of botanical therapy and elevate the space with a contemporary mix of furniture styles that collectively invite and individually inspire,” Gina adds. “Effective in the smallest of living rooms, mismatched footstools, sofas and chairs in a range of textures that speak the same language allow us the freedom to be bold in our choices.”

“Hardware has the power to transform a room”

TA handle ON IT

Never neglect your hardware, says Matilda Goad

he door handle is the handshake of the building,” said Finnish architect Juhani Pallasmaa. And it’s true: consider the difference between a limp, lifeless gesture and a solid, confident welcome, and apply that to your front door. Hardware is often neglected, but it’s undeniable that ugly or flimsy door handles can significantly cramp the style of even the most beautifully decorated home.

Nobody knows this better than designer Matilda Goad, who is a leader in a small market for stylish hardware pieces. “Hardware has the power to transform a room; whether updating an existing piece of furniture or it being integral to the design of a space, it’s a small product with big impact,” she says. Her MG&Co collections take on a signature playful form with colourful lacquered knobs, handles and hooks in varying styles and sizes, complemented with brass and nickel backplates available in a multitude of shapes.

Whether investing in hardware at the beginning of a project, or looking for a finishing touch,

hardware plays a pivotal role in bringing a space together to create a home.

Built on ‘timeless homewares for modern living’, Matilda Goad & Co. started with a signature Scallop Lampshade and expanded to indorporate a thoughtful collection of unique homeware, offering a contemporary spin on interior classics. With an emphasis on pieces that offer both personality and purpose, Matilda pulls inspiration from daily rituals, designing homewares to spark joy. From rainbow coloured cutlery and lacquered trays to tole planters, beeswax candles and ceramic jugs, Matilda Goad & Co. products fill the homes of fashion insiders and interiors aficionados alike. A particular hit has been the brand’s giant ceramic clam shells, which regularly rack up waiting lists in the hundreds – a fitting testament to Matilda’s ability to tap into the Zeitgeist.

In 2020 Matilda launched The Dispatch, a monthly letter landing in subscribers’ inboxes offering the designer’s take on building a happy home. Crafted through the same idiosyncratic lens as Matilda’s products, the letter comprises practical advice from how to care for your linen, to life hacks and sourcing tips. The Dispatch opens the door into her world, with the hope of helping to fill the spaces that objects can’t

SKY HIGH

Experience aviation history with the 744 Experience in Cheshire

Nestled in the picturesque countryside near Tattenhall, Cheshire, lies a hidden gem for aviation enthusiasts: the 744 Experience. This unique attraction o ers an unparalleled opportunity to relive the glory days of the iconic Boeing 747-400, lovingly known as the “Queen of the Skies”. Whether you were fortunate enough to have flown on one of these majestic aircraft, worked on them, or simply admired their presence from afar, the 744 Experience promises a nostalgic and immersive journey into aviation history.

A DREAM BROUGHT TO LIFE

The concept of the 744 Experience was born out of a deep-seated passion for the Boeing 747-400 and a desire to preserve its legacy for future generations. Following the retirement of British Airways’ 747400 fleet in July 2020, many enthusiasts and former passengers were left with a sense of loss. These aircraft, which had faithfully served travellers for decades, were now destined for scrapyards. However, a dedicated team of professionals from various industries came together to save a piece of this aviation history. The 744 Experience was three years in the making. The result is the most complete and authentic Boeing 747-400 fixed-base flight simulator and upper deck experience available to the public in the UK. The centrepiece of this experience is the cockpit from G-CIVM, one of the retired British Airways 747-400s, which has been fully restored to its original glory. Complete with original instruments and avionics, this cockpit now serves as a fully operational flight simulator and procedures trainer.

AVIATION HISTORY

What sets the 744 Experience apart from other flight simulators is its dedication to authenticity. In addition to the cockpit from G-CIVM, the 744 Experience also features the entire upper deck seating cabin from G-BYGG, the 92nd and final British Airways 747-400. This cabin, which once hosted business class passengers on long-haul flights around the world, has been meticulously preserved and o ers visitors a rare glimpse into the past. The opportunity to sit in these original seats, surrounded by the atmosphere of a bygone era, is a truly unique experience.

A WORLD OF EXPERIENCES

The 744 Experience o ers so much for those looking to delve deeper into the world of aviation. For aspiring pilots or those curious about the inner workings of a Boeing 747-400, the flight simulator experience is a must-try. Visitors can book the simulator for a range of experiences, from short-haul flights to long-haul journeys, each o ering a hands-on opportunity to experience the thrill of piloting one of the world’s most iconic aircraft. With an expert and friendly instructor at your side, no previous flying experience is necessary. The 744 Experience also o ers bespoke packages for special occasions, corporate events, or simply for those who wish to spend more time exploring the aircraft. Each experience is tailored to the individual or group, ensuring a memorable visit that captures the essence of the Boeing 747-400.

A TASTE OF LUXURY

There are a host of dining experiences for guests to enjoy on simulated flights. For example, guests are treated to a 90-minute journey that includes a delicious

afternoon tea served at 35,000 feet – or at least, it feels that way. The carefully curated menu features a selection of fine teas, delicate sandwiches, and exquisite pastries, all served in the comfort of the upper deck’s business class seats. During the flight, each guest is invited to visit the flight deck for a five-minute experience, where they can witness the intricate workings of the 747-400 cockpit and perhaps even take a turn at the controls. The experience culminates with a smooth simulated landing, after which guests are presented with a special flight tag gift as a memento of their journey. And it’s not just afternoon tea: their next dining experience is a ‘flight’ to Bangkok with Thai food on 5 October.

PRESERVING THE LEGACY

The 744 Experience is more than just a flight simulator; it is a tribute to an aircraft that has left an indelible mark on the history of aviation. By preserving key sections of these iconic planes, the team behind the 744 Experience has created a living museum where visitors can connect with the past and relive the golden age of air travel.

For those who have a deep love for aviation, the 744 Experience o ers a chance to step back in time and savour the elegance and grandeur of the Boeing 747-400. Located near Tattenhall, Cheshire, this unique venue is a must-visit destination for anyone with a passion for the skies. Whether you’re reminiscing about past flights or fulfilling a lifelong dream of piloting a jumbo jet, the 744 Experience promises an unforgettable journey into aviation history.

A DECADE

OF DIFFERENCE

The

story of Abbey Gate College and

the

Mlindzini community, Eswatini

Since 2013, Abbey Gate College in Cheshire has maintained an on-going partnership with the Mlindzini community in Eswatini (formally known as Swaziland). Visits by groups of students in Years 11-13, plus sta volunteers, have been made on a bi-annual basis to provide them with opportunities to experience a di erent culture, to undertake construction work to improve facilities and to help improve educational opportunities for the Eswatini pupils.

Ten years is a significant milestone in any relationship, but when that relationship is between an independent school set in leafy grounds in the heart of the UK and a remote community in the distant mountains of Eswatini, the impact is profound. Abbey Gate College’s partnership with Mlindzini is a testament to the power of human connection and the transformative potential of education.

When this collaboration began in 2013, it was a bold step. To bridge the vast geographical and socio-economic divide between the two communities was an ambitious undertaking. Yet, a decade on, it is evident that the partnership has not only endured but flourished, becoming a beacon of hope and progress.

Over the years, four student expeditions have ventured to Eswatini, the most recent in July 2024. These expeditions provide invaluable experiences for Abbey Gate College students, o ering them the opportunity to experience a culture very di erent from their own while developing their leadership and teamworking skills. Through these trips, students have not only made a positive impact on the community, but

have also learned invaluable lessons about global citizenship and social responsibility. Fundraising has been a key component of these expeditions, with the entire Abbey Gate College community participating in events such as race nights, quiz nights, bake sales, and other events. The funds raised have supported various projects in Mlindzini, including road improvements, the construction of a bridge, and the building of new kitchen blocks for the schools. These projects have made a significant di erence in the daily lives of students and teachers, improving access to education and ensuring that basic needs, such as meals, are met.

However, this partnership is more than just bricks and mortar. It is about people connecting with people. The exchange of cultures, ideas, and perspectives has enriched both communities. Abbey Gate College students have gained a profound appreciation for the challenges faced by their peers in Mlindzini, while the community has embraced new opportunities and aspirations. This decade-long collaboration is a powerful reminder of the interconnectedness of our world. It demonstrates that even the smallest actions can have a ripple e ect. By investing in the education and well-being of the Mlindzini community, Abbey Gate College has not only fulfilled its social responsibility, but has also created a legacy of hope and inspiration. One of the most significant achievements of this collaboration has been the increase in school attendance and retention rates in Mlindzini. Previously, many children in the community did not attend school regularly due to a lack of facilities and resources. Now, with the support of Abbey Gate College, not only do more children attend school, but they also stay longer,

with a noticeable increase in the number of students progressing to higher education

Sta members from the schools in the community have commented on this enduring relationship: “Abbey Gate College has been a true partner in every sense of the word. They have not only provided us with resources, but have also stood with us, shared our challenges, and celebrated our successes. We are forever grateful for their friendship and support. We run short of words to express our sincere gratitude for the donations. Pass our great thankfulness to… everyone who has played a part.”

As the partnership enters its second decade, it is essential to acknowledge that challenges remain. Poverty, inequality, and climate change continue to impact the lives of people in Mlindzini. However, the foundation laid over the past ten years provides a solid platform for addressing

these issues. By building upon the successes of the partnership and adapting to the changing needs of the community, Abbey Gate College and Mlindzini can continue to create a brighter future together. This partnership is a model for others to emulate. It is a testament to the belief that education is a fundamental human right and that collaboration can overcome even the most daunting obstacles.

Craig Jenkinson, Head of Abbey Gate College, says of the College’s Eswatini Service Project: “The world needs more partnerships like this. It is a beacon of hope in a world often marked by division and inequality, Abbey Gate College and community of Mlindzini have shown us that together, we can create a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.”

LITTLE DISCOVERY

A creative space for young families will give children the chance to run their own ‘mini museum’

Anew family-friendly attraction has been launched at Warrington Museum designed to ignite curiosity and creativity among youngsters. The museum’s former Wren Gallery has been completely transformed into a colourful, welcoming and interactive space that is free for children to play in and explore.

‘Creativity Cove’ gives young visitors the chance to curate their own mini museum with a plinth to display their Duplo or Stickle Bricks masterpieces, plenty of room to create artworks, and brushes and cloths for that important work of protecting exhibits.

There is also a host of books, board games and puzzles as well as a blackboard to leave messages for others, and plenty of clothes and accessories for little ones to play dress up.

The aim of Creativity Cove is to provide a community spot that makes young families

feel more at home at Warrington Museum, one of the oldest museums in the country. Children can let their imaginations run wild while parents can relax, knowing their kids are in a safe environment.

The project has been led by Laura Mercer and Sophie New, from Culture Warrington, the charity behind Warrington Museum, as well as Warrington Arts Festival and Pyramid and Parr Hall. It followed a series of consultations with families in the area, early years settings and community partners over several months about what activities their children enjoy, what’s

important to them and what they’d like to see more of in Culture Warrington venues.

Sophie says: “The museum itself is a treasure trove of trinkets and thrilling objects just waiting to be discovered. So that inspired us to create this opportunity for tiny minds to be tantalised.

“Kids can curate their own exhibition using the frames that open up, allowing space to display their own artworks using crayons and paper, or perhaps arranging the magnets inside to make an imaginative portrait. We’ve even thrown a plinth in for good measure, because what’s an exhibition without a Duplo or Stickle Brick sculpture?

“The blackboard has also been transformed and is now fully interactive – o ering prompts for visitors to check in with themselves as a tool for wellness and self-expression. We’d also like to thank our lovely community who donated all the books we have.”

Creativity Cove was launched alongside Warrington Arts Festival to enhance a family show at the museum – Move Manchester’s Lilo Lost It. But it has been so well received that it has become a permanent addition to the venue. It is also the new home for the museum’s ever popular Crafternoons on Saturdays and school holiday crafts on Wednesdays and Fridays.

“We wanted to create a space that ignites curiosity and creativity”

Laura adds: “As two mums with little ones, we’ve loved working on this beautiful space for children to enjoy. We wanted to increase awareness of our amazing museum and develop an exciting self-guided o er for families, with a particular focus on early years.

“Lockdown had a huge impact on early years in terms of a lack of social interaction, a decrease in creative activities and an increase of screen time. Therefore,we wanted to create a space that ignites curiosity and

creativity. It’s also important for adults to have the chance to take a minute and grab a cuppa, knowing that their children are entertained in a safe interactive space.”

Creativity Cove is part of a larger project at Culture Warrington exploring how the arts charity can develop its early years o er in a wide range of ways. To stay up-to-date with the plans, keep an eye on Culture Warrington’s social media.

DUNHAM MASSEY

Tickets are now on sale for an extravaganza of light artworks set to dazzle this winter

Dunham Massey will sparkle brighter than ever this winter, with a series of dazzling new illuminated artworks set to enchant visitors from 15 November to 1 January. These stunning installations, inspired by the natural world and festive themes, have been created by internationally renowned artists and are guaranteed to add extra magic to the Christmas season.

Created by Culture Creative and produced in partnership with Sony Music and the National Trust, Christmas at Dunham Massey is a magical, afterdark trail for visitors of all ages. Among the new highlights for 2024 is Luminosi Trees by Sound Intervention. Four six-metre-high light trees accompanied by multi-channel music composition using gamelan gongs and based on the Fibonacci sequence of numbers.

Also debuting is On The Tide by Squidsoup, which is a water-based floating floral lightwork. It is created from points of light floating in strands that are moved and positioned by the natural movement of the water.

Another exciting addition is Fire Dancers by Maria Hingerty and Brian Thunder, inspired by Christmas tabletop chimes and happy memories of celebratory gatherings. The installation symbolises joyful expression, human unity and gentle optimism.

The new artworks join Dunham Massey’s already popular illuminated trail, featuring thousands of twinkling lights, seasonal scents, sparkling baubles,

sparkling tunnels of light, and vibrant woodland and lakeside displays.

Matthew Findlay, Head of UK trails for Sony Music/RG Live, says: “We are thrilled to be bringing back Christmas at Dunham Massey for 2024 which will feature incredible, new artistic innovations sure to delight and amaze visitors of all ages. The feedback has been fantastic for last year’s trail, but we’re determined to make the 2024 edition the ultimate seasonal experience for all the family.”
