hilst solstices and the return to GMT pinpoint our new seasons, the onset of winter sneaks up on me imperceptibly every year. The morning cold snap is suddenly snappier, and soon the weekdays will be shrouded in darkness, as we trudge to work before the sun rises and leave well after it has set. It’s a fairly depressing prospect... However, I’ve always had a soft spot for the late autumn and winter months. There’s inherent joy to be found in wrapping-up against the cold; in warming hands around melamine mugs of hearty soup; in the crackle of roaring bonfires and ‘oohing’ and ‘aahing’ over fireworks. Not forgetting our new season closets which need addressing... For us at Absolutely, November isn’t so much a time to hibernate as it is a time to get out – to enjoy all the things this exciting time of year has to offer. With this in mind, it’s rather ironic that this month ‘Spring’ has grabbed our attention. Not the season, Skye Gyngell’s new restaurant located in Somerset House. The award-winning former Head Chef of Petersham Nurseries tells us what to expect from her first solo venture and reveals who, exactly, has influenced her illustrious career, on page 82. Over in our interiors section, Neil McKelvie looks behind the scenes at Acton’s Titian Studio on page 56 (if you ever thought that restoration techniques like gilding and lacquering were a thing of the past, think again). We’ve also put together an alpine style page, to transform your house into a St. Moritz chalet (just in case you don’t own one already). In all, I very much believe there is something for everyone in this issue, whether you have a soft spot for the upcoming winter or otherwise. u

MR TURNER ritten and directed by the great Mike Leigh, this biographical film follows the incredible life and career of British artist, radical and revolutionary, J. M. W. Turner. Spanning the quarter-century until his death in 1851, the film follows him wherever he goes. But, rather than glorifying him, Leigh examines the tension between the epic artistic talent that he possessed and the flawed individual

that he was. Played to perfection by Timothy Spall, who picked up best actor at Festival de Cannes this year, we witness the overwhelming pressure that the 19th century art world put upon him. Now, we understand why Turner built and lived in his beloved Twickenham home, Sandycombe Lodge. Peace. At. Last.u

Street SPIRIT
A detailed 'One Street Study' of Chiswick’s Weston Road reveals how the Great War affected the lives of its families and residents Wo r d s G i l l T h o m a s

he 1914-18 war devastated a generation. But how can we now connect with events that happened such a long time ago? What happened to local communities? To find out more about the men that served and their families you can start your own Street Project to unlock the past. Weston Road is in Acton Green, Chiswick. The 1911 Census recorded 104 households with 430 inhabitants – it certainly must have been very crowded. By 1914, 115 male residents were eligible for military service. Before the war, army service was voluntary. Recruits needed to be at least 5’ 3” tall and aged between 18- 38, although, following changes by Lord Kitchener, this was increased to 45 (average male life expectancy by contrast was 50). In

1916 conscription was introduced and the Army grew into a vast machine powered by bakers, mechanics, and shop workers. In Weston Road, Francis Smith (no.38) decided to volunteer. Aged 33, he was a cook, living with his wife Caroline and their family. Francis enlisted at Chiswick Town Hall on 11 August 1916 and was posted to an Employment Company in the Labour Corps. Policeman Charles Ekins (no.68) returned to sea. A small anchor tattoo between his thumb and first finger would always identify him as a Navy man. He served aboard the battleship HMS Mars
on patrol off the east coast of England. Both men survived the war, but some of their neighbours were not as fortunate. Thomas Joslin (no.50) received a call-up notice in the spring of 1915. Aged 34, he was drafted into the Royal Engineers. Following injury, he returned to active service but within five weeks he had been killed in action, leaving a widow, Florence. He is remembered on the St. Albans church Roll of Honour. The Olding family (no.76, pictured) was devastated by the war. By 1912 Robert and his wife Nancy had four children. Nancy

died before Robert was called-up to serve with the Royal Engineers. He died on 28 July 1918, leaving four children - the orphans were unable to stay together. Henry Hearn (no.8) lost his life on the Western Front. He had married Caroline Harding at St. Albans church in 1909. Henry was called up in May 1916.
Serving initially with the Royal Fusiliers, he suffered from trench foot, requiring 60 days of recuperation. Just six weeks after his return to France, Private Hearn was killed in action on 31 July 1917. He is remembered at the Menin Gate. Caroline was unusual in re-marrying in 1919. The Smith family (no.6) lost their adopted son, Charles Offord. Charles had joined up as a volunteer in 1917 serving with the Royal Flying Corps but was involved in a flying accident near Castle Bromwich in August 1918. His bomber crashed, killing all seven crew. He was buried with full honours at Acton Cemetery, the coffin draped in the Union flag, borne on a gun carriage. Patriotic fervour drove many to volunteer for war work in factories making munitions or essential military supplies. William Smith (no.48) was a ‘Special’ worker at Oxton’s Motor Works - a ‘setter-up’ of bombs. His wife worked in aeroplane construction at the Napier
PATRIOTIC FERVOUR DROVE MANY TO VOLUNTEER IN FACTORIES Works. Emily Aires (no.2) worked in a munitions factory in Hayes for 2½ years. The Dorey family (no.66) also volunteered - Robert, a stonemason, worked at the Whiteheads aircraft works in Richmond as did his daughter Phoebe, an engine fitter. (Whiteheads were manufacturers of the famous Sopwith Pups.) Before the war most women worked in the home. War service caused major labour shortages within local laundries. Benjamin Carter (no.52) worked for the Streamdale Laundry. His employer described him as ‘– steady and absolutely honest, in fact a thoroughly capable man.’

Benjamin served in the Army Service Corps, from 1914 to December 1918. You can assemble a similar project for your neighbourhood using 1911 Census records and editions of local newspapers. Online resources such as Commonwealth War Graves can help with casualties. If you are planning a community event to commemorate the Great War, or if you are looking for a theme for an educational project, a One-Street Study can bring the project to life. u Gill Thomas is a Chiswickbased professional Genealogist; whowhatwhereresearch.com

hile it was a case of ‘out with the old and in with the new’ as ITV’s new breakfast show Good Morning Britain replaced Daybreak earlier this year, there is a familiarity at least as far as the programme’s presenters go. No strangers to working at a time of the day when everyone else’s is just beginning, Charlotte Hawkins and Sean Fletcher moved from Sky News Sunrise while Susanna Reid has left BBC Breakfast to host the show between 6am and 8:30am weekdays. Fellow main presenter Ben Shephard meanwhile is having something of an early morning reunion with ITV, having formerly presented the broadcaster’s GMTV show. ‘Having an intimate knowledge of broadcasting at this time of the morning, I know there’s nothing quite like it,’ Ben tells me. ‘After a four-year lie-in, I’ve dusted off the alarm clock, bought a new coffee machine and it’s great to be a part of the Good Morning Britain team.’ While the early morning starts will be challenging, a major plus of Ben’s new working hours with Good Morning Britain

I LIKE TO VISIT RICHMOND PARK WITH THE BOYS TO KICK A FOOTBALL ABOUT will be getting to spend more hours in the afternoon and evening with his sons Jack and Sam and wife Annie. A man of simple pleasures, nothing will delight him more than indulging in an outdoor lifestyle here in Richmond with his family. ‘Whenever I’ve got spare time, I like to
visit Richmond Park with the boys to kick a football about, throw a rugby ball, climb trees and ultimately, get very muddy,’ smiles Ben. ‘The more time we can spend outside, the less damage that gets done in the house with two small boys!’ ‘Sitting down at the end of the day and watching Star Wars is also pretty popular with them.’ He adds. As fresh-faced now as when he made his big national television breakthrough with Channel 4’s The Bigger Breakfast back in 1998, it is hard to believe that Ben will soon turn 40 on December 11. During his career, he has presented on shows including The Xtra Factor, Soapstar Superstar, DanceX, Who Dares Sings as Superstar well as hosting live coverage of the UEFA Champions League and Capital One Cup on Sky Sports, who are based at nearby Isleworth. ‘Sky Sports have been fantastic for me,’ reflects Ben, ‘one of the small elements I particularly enjoy in my job is getting to a football ground early, with no fans in the stadium. There’s something very magical about getting access to these famous venues you’ve grown up as a kid watching and seeing the calm before the storm pre-match if you like. I love being a part of Sky Sports and I am really looking forward to continuing

to host Goals on Sunday, a programme that is extremely close to my heart.’ While he has a packed CV of presenting roles, Ben’s route into TV – by his own admission – was something that started ‘relatively late on’. ‘When I first went to university during the mid-1990s, I wasn’t 100% sure what I wanted to do, but tried my hand at television by doing some work experience and getting a job for a TV company as a runner,’ he recalls. ‘I collected lunches and dry cleaning for the presenters, that kind of thing. One of the producers suggested I try presenting and I’d present the weather (on the Weather Channel). I caught the presenting bug there and then and it all went from there really.’ Studying at the University of Birmingham at the time, Ben’s work would eventually bring him back to his native South East. Born in Epping in Essex and a former pupil of the renowned Chigwell School, he has lived in and around for London for many years now and feels especially settled in Richmond,
I ENJOY GETTING TO A STADIUM EARLY, WITH NO FANS AROUND... IT'S MAGICAL where he is currently based. ‘It’s nice to have the easy access to central London while still being in a very green, leafy area,’ he says. ‘I don’t get the luxury to enjoy Richmond as much as I’d like, but when I do, I realise how many fantastic places are on our doorstep. There are some amazing places to eat locally. The Victoria, which is a hotel, restaurant and gastro-pub in East Sheen is a real favourite of mine… the head chef Paul Merrett is an absolute genius.’ ‘Clothing wise, I’ve been totally seduced by The Kooples on The Quadrant, which is somewhere I shop in a fair bit. The Whole Foods Market has been a remarkable
21 Chiswick_Oct_BenShephard.indd 21
success locally and the scale of it is really impressive. Close to where we live, there is also a lovely butcher, greengrocers and a deli that we like to support.’ If his TV schedule and family life wasn’t busy enough, Ben joined friend Ivan Hollingsworth and London Welsh rugby captain Tom May at the start of the year to train continuously until they have each burned 10,000 calories. The challenge was to raise funds for the Children’s Heart Unit at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne, who were responsible for caring for Ivan’s son Sebastian. His charity efforts also saw him take to the football pitch for Soccer Aid, an event that has raised some £6.5 million in aid of UNICEF UK to date. With such physical challenges on the horizon, Ben is bound to be spending plenty of time in Richmond Park in the next few months to keep in tip-top condition. u To sponsor Ben, Ivan and Tom visit justgiving.com/10000calories4chuf visitofficialbenshephard.com

THE BIBA YEARS 1963~1975
Killer heels and enchanted prints from fashion powerhouse Dolce & Gabbana
Wo r d s r o s e n o e l
Wo r d s H e l e n b a r o n
ounded as a boutique mail-order in 1963 by Polish F service designer Barbara Hulanicki and her husband Stephen FitzSimon, Biba quickly gained cult status, outgrowing several London premises before landing at 99–117 Kensington High Street in 1973 as ‘Big Biba’, ‘the most beautiful store in the world’. This beautiful new book marks 50 years of the iconic brand, charting its success from the first creations and through the four legendary London shops to the eventual flourishing of a lifestyle brand that revolutionised British retail and fashion culture. The book also features previously unpublished material, including early fashion illustrations by Hulanicki and fullcolour facsimiles of the six luxurious Biba catalogues, exploring all the while the ethos of a company which effectively became the first retailer to bring affordable fashion to the youth market. The Biba Years is a comprehensive insight into the Biba fashions of the time and those iconic pieces whose influence can still be felt on the fashion industry today. u

Anmarie Bowler, blogger and vintage junkie
THE BEST BARGAIN I'VE EVER FOUND... is undoubtedly the safari chic belt by Mulberry from the Cancer Research Charity shop in Ealing for £3 – Really!
I’M NOT CHARGED UP BY BRAND NEW OR SILLY EXPENSIVE... I prefer clothing with a past so if I could happen upon a pair of lightly used Robert Clergerie wedges formerly worn by a woman with great karma, I’d die happy.
I'VE JUST GOT BACK.... from Chicago and its monthly Randolph Street vintage market was my idea of paradise. Not to mention Chicago-style hotdogs and Cubs baseball.
MY STYLE ICONS ARE... actress and former model Anjelica Huston, designer and Coco Chanel’s rival Elsa Schiaparelli and my mom.
I LOVE CLOTHES THAT... bring me back
to my childhood, like the Coach handbags carried by my mom and her friends in the 80s. I also love both Marimekko and Lilly Pulitzer prints.
I REGULALRY VISIT THE PAINTING... of Samson
and Delilah at The National Gallery. Rubens’ depiction of the folds of fabric in Delilah’s frock is nothing short of magic.

KERATIN BLOW DRY at Jo Blu Salon
Good hair days, courtesy of Jo Blu salon, and (finally) the perfect foundation from YSL
Wo r d s g e m m a b i l l i n g t o n
W o r d s r o m y va n d e n b r o e k e
’ve never had a good relationship with my hair. It's wavy but not in I a covetable 'boho' way, and frizzes at the mere hint of wind or rain. Over the years I’ve simply had to come to terms with its rebellious nature so, also being a low-maintenance kind of girl (read: lazy), the idea of a Keratin Blow Dry – a treatment that de-frizzes and hydrates hair, leaving it straight and manageable – was most appealing. I made an appointment at celeb-favourite Jo Blu Salon and, on a Friday lunchtime, the place is positively teeming. I’ve lined up a most indulgent afternoon, for even before the eponymous Jo can get to work on my tresses, I’m whisked downstairs to the beauty area for an incredible hot stone massage. When I resurface, thoroughly relaxed, it's down to business. Keratin is a protein that penetrates the hair to leave it nourished and manageable. It’s an increasingly popular option for clients looking to maintain that ‘just-stepped-out-of the-salon’ sheen. It's also chemical-free and lasts for around 14 weeks. Jo applies the clay-like Keratin and leaves it for 20 minutes before drying. 24 hours later, I wash it out at home. To my amazement, those pesky kinks have vanished. Best of all, my hair feels silky soft and glossy. It's not cheap (prices start from £90), but when you think of the cash wasted on serums that don’t quite work, it’s money well spent. Not to mention the ensuing weeks’ worth of very good hair days. u

reated by make-up icon Pat McGrath, Dolce & Gabbana’s catwalk look has the strongest signature style of all fashion’s big hitters. It’s instantly recognisable, season to season, and is one of the most asked-for looks from my clients. The top-heavy black flicked liner, defined, wide brow, perfect skin and precise highlighting and contouring is universally flattering and perennially chic. Skin is everything here - start with a primer or serum that evens and plumps. I love the Elemis Illuminating Flash Balm for an instant pick-me-up. Smooth, don’t rub it into your skin. If you have any problem areas then the Cover FX Blemish Treatment Concealer will heal as it conceals. Pop a little gel or cream blush on the apples of your cheeks, then using a wide brush sweep a matte contouring powder
(this Kevyn Aucoin one is simply the best) under your cheekbones and around the edge of your face. With a smaller brush, use the same powder to softly contour your eye socket. A subtle pink highlighting shadow popped onto your eyelids and tear ducts really brightens and freshens the look. For the flick itself, practice makes perfect. Start with a small fine line that you pull out just a small way, then build up to something more dramatic. Mark the flick gently, then close and fill-in. The NARS angled brush is great for softening the edges of liquid liner. Load on the mascara and add lashes that are heavier at the outer corners if it’s evening. Dolce & Gabbana girls often rock a strong lip, but this season they had rosybalmed lips. You can achieve a similar effect by rubbing lip balm into your lips then patting a strongly pigmented lipstick like this NARS one into the centre of your lips and blending out using a finger. u

‘FOOT SOLUTIONS GOT ME BACK ON MY FEET’ lthough officially retired as a Consultant Maxillofacial Prosthetist, Colin Haylock MBE still travels the world using his specialist life-changing skills to help rebuild people’s faces. However, following a motorcycle accident which left his left foot badly deformed, Colin’s mobility was significantly restricted. “I was really struggling,” explains Colin, currently an honorary tutor at Guys Medical School. “Following the accident, my movement became painful and awkward and I had to drag my left foot sideways. The problem was accentuated during my travels when I was on my feet a lot of the time.”
A
At first, Colin sought help from the usual channels, visiting casualty, a physiotherapist and even an orthoptist who prescribed rigid (and uncomfortable) half-sole inserts. Unfortunately, nothing worked. Then Colin
decided to visit Foot Solutions in Richmond. “I’d been aware of the Foot Solutions free foot assessment offer for some time,” adds Colin “then one Sunday morning I called in to the store. I’m so glad I did because that visit changed my life for the better.” Colin was seen by a Foot Solutions consultant, who after taking a full case history, performed a series of tests and scans which identified in addition to the injury, a fallen arch which was exacerbating the problem. “The consultant was extremely patient and thorough,” continues Colin, “he recommended custom-made arch supports and advised on suitable footwear, but applied no sales pressure.” Colin accepted the consultant’s recommendations and followed his detailed instructions on how to use the arch supports. “I can now walk normally with virtually no discomfort,” says a delighted Colin, “Foot Solutions is a very good product and I am happy to endorse it.”u Foot Solutions, 4 Red Lion Street, Richmond, TW9 1RW; 020 8940 1814 footsolutions.co.uk/richmond

THE ‘KEY’ TO SUCCESS
THE KEYS TO
WELLNESS Are you ready to eat well and take regular exercise or do you need a little extra help? by Terry Rodham HOGARTH GROUP WELLNESS MANAGER
T
he mantra of eating well and taking regular exercise sounds so easy, but even with the best of intentions, it’s still hard to keep to this simple mantra, isn’t it? In our modern world we are constantly juggling work, social lives, finances, family and relationships, often resulting in a regular exercise regime and a healthy diet proving a step too far. We recognise these challenges at our clubs and provide members with expert guidance and regular one -to-one contact, combined with the latest in fitness technology, to make
the process of maintaining and improving personal well-being easier to manage, understand, and achieve.
BALANCE IS THE KEY
u At The Park Club, we have adopted the concept of Wellness, defined as ‘a balance of mind, body and spirit that results in an overall feeling of wellbeing.’ The key to that statement is balance. Not only do we consider it our job to guide you inside the gym, we also undertake to guide you outside the gym to help you achieve this balance because, after all, there is more to life than eating chicken salad and pounding the treadmill.
51 NH_Oct_Park_Club_adv.indd 51
u Using the latest in gym technology, members can carry their workout information with them on a special Wellness Key, which can be inserted into any machine, providing the user with information such as the correct weight to use, the number of repetitions, or the resistance level and time on an exercise bike. Not only does this give the user confidence, it also stores all your exercise results, such as calories burned, weight lifted or distance covered, so that a review can be conducted by a trainer and goals/targets adjusted accordingly.
REGULAR CONTACT
u Regular contact between members and trainers is a major focus. Members are entitled to one complimentary personal training session every month in which progress can be discussed, technique and form checked and goals reassessed. This regular contact keeps members engaged in their routine and confident to continue. Using our ‘Coach’ application, trainers are also able to stay in regular contact with members wherever they may be. If you’ve had a period of inactivity on your account, you can expect an email checking that everything is okay!
STAYING CONNECTED
u You can use your smart phone to access your Wellness account wherever you are. You can use your laptop or tablet to register physical activity such as a game of tennis or a cycle around the park from anywhere. And of course, if all this technology is too much, simple face-to-face time is always available from our welcoming and knowledgeable staff. We love to see members enjoying their routine and reaping the benefits of regular exercise, wherever it may be. u

Gilded Age Grand designs, luxury materials and old-fashioned craftsmanship are still in vogue at Acton-based Titian Studio W o r d s N e i l M c K e lv i e

rowing up in Ladbroke Grove, Rodrigo Titian couldn’t help but be immersed in his father’s fledgling furniture restoration and decoration business. The workshop was in the family home. Fortunately, the young Rodrigo was keen to get involved; not, as he confesses, that his initial contributions were always helpful. ‘I still remember the day when I proudly told my father, “I’ve finished that console table for you”.’ He looked anxious: “What did you do?” I said, "I’ve painted it black." Dad shot downstairs. He’d just spent hours gilding it!’ Clearly, the father son relationship survived and flourished. Today, Rodrigo and his wife Rosaria run Titian Studio (his father, Salvatore, retired in 1989) from a light-filled workshop in Acton. The in-house team of craftsmen and women work in every imaginable material – from stone, marble and glass to wood, metal and plastics – and are masters of a dazzling array of traditional and modern
techniques: carving, lacquering, gilding, French polishing, veneering, japanning, paint effects, marquetry, parquetry and caning to name a few. They can even make new pieces of furniture straight from the drawing board and even photographs. While the Studio boasts an enviable client list of Royal residences, historic institutions and A-List celebrities and interior designers, much of the business is based on what Rodrigo calls breadand-butter work. ‘Our philosophy is no job is too small,’ he confirms. ‘Of course, it’s exciting when a glamorous commission comes in, but we’re equally happy to re-cane a chair, French polish a scratch on a coffee table or re-gild the handle of a cabinet.’ Rodrigo’s father arrived in London from Capri in 1958. ‘He was a perfumemaker back home, but through personal connections he got a job with Colefax & Fowler,’ explains Rodrigo. ‘He was naturally gifted at decorating and colour matching and became workshop manager. Then, in 1963, he set up on his own, developing his skills and working for the likes of Barbara Hepworth and

HOMES & INTERIORS / PROFILE Henry Moore. Those famous names helped no end.’ Rodrigo joined his father in 1980, starting off with all the ‘horrible jobs’. After completing an apprenticeship and resisting a brief flirtation with graphic design, he committed himself to the family firm. Together with Rosaria, who he met when she was apprenticed to his father, Rodrigo piloted the Studio through the 1990s recession and then slowly re-grew the business. Today, Titian Studio is thriving and, as he admits, those ‘glamorous’ projects have done wonders to raise the company’s profile. ‘I particularly enjoyed working at Kew Palace because we were involved with the curators from the start,’ Rodrigo tells me. ‘We were responsible for a dozen or so items, such as the window boxes in Queen Charlotte’s bedroom and the Sheraton bed in Princess Elizabeth’s bedroom. We also did the ormolu gilding on the fireplace in the Yellow Room at Buckingham Palace and all the gilding on the restoration of the Prince Albert Memorial.’ Other notable clients have included Julian Fellowes, Elton John, Mick Jagger, for whom the Studio restored a paper-

panelled screen of a London map, and the late L’Wren Scott, who asked Rodrigo to gild shoes, dresses and bags for a catwalk show. ‘With those sort of jobs, you can see why we never get the Monday morning blues!’ Inevitably, these days Rodrigo’s role is more managerial and less hands-on. ‘I try to work on site now and again because I still

love working with my hands,’ he says. ‘It’s impossible in the workshop because there are too many interruptions. But, frankly, I’m getting rusty and there are people in the Studio who are better than me.’ Finally, I wonder, do Rodrigo and Rosaria own any flatpack furniture? Or is their home an exquisite showcase of decorative crafts? Rodrigo laughs: ‘I must admit, in our first flat we went over the top: we had gesso-dragged walls and trompe l’oeil Roman ruins and Etruscan figures. But, we’ve got less opulent in our old age. And yes, we have had flatpack cabinets. But, to be honest, we’d rather buy something from a saleroom and use our skills to restore it.’ u

Garden State A new book by V&A Publishing, in association with Kew Gardens, examines the influence the world famous gardens had on artist Edward Bawden Wo r d s g e m m a b i l l i n g t o n
B
orn in 1903, graphic artist and illustrator Edward Bawden had a lifelong obsession with Kew Gardens. Having studied at Cambridge School of Art under the tuition of Surrealist painter Paul Nash, Bawden enjoyed a varied career – even serving as an official war artist during WWII. It was during the late 1950s, however, that Bawden began to produce the linocuts and lithographs for which he is best known. A deep-rooted love of the British landscape, and Kew Gardens in particular, was a constant in Bawden’s art. According to fine art consultant Peyton Skipwith, co-author of V&A Publishing’s Edward Bawden’s Kew Gardens, Bawden ‘not only responded to the plants and setting of Kew, but was equally beguiled by the intricate assemblage of people, buildings, romance, frivolity and patronage that had led to the creation of the Gardens.’ But Edward Bawden’s Kew Gardens is not, and was never intended to be, a simple collection of the artist’s Kewinspired prints. Its structure underwent numerous changes, resulting in a somewhat idiosyncratic layout, but the book ultimately reflects the shared vision of Skipwith and co-author Brian Webb. Before the final layout was decided, the authors originally intended to reproduce an early Bawden manuscript entitled A General Guide to the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, Spring & Easter 1923. However, Skipwith concluded that, ‘to make a facsimile without explanation would be pointless...

The idea of a boxed edition containing a facsimile and explanatory text was discussed and dismissed. Having already published our 2011 [book], Edward Bawden’s London, Mark Eastment at V&A Publishing expressed great enthusiasm for the project and we embarked on detailed discussions for an appropriate format.’ The finished book, therefore, is divided into two halves. The first, entitled Historic Kew, gives a detailed history of the early

years of the Gardens and their social significance. The second, Edward Bawden & Kew, documents the artist’s ‘abiding interest in Kew, which stretched over 60 years from the 1920s to the 1980s.’ In the centre of the book we find Bawden’s illustrations for Robert Herring’s Adam & Evelyn, a light-hearted history of Hanoverian England for which Bawden, ‘drew, or redrew vignettes of George III, Queen Charlotte and Sir William Chambers...’ Other illustrations in the book include Bawden’s botanical sketches and his celebrated London Transport posters (Kew has inspired more London Transport posters than almost all other London attractions put together). Though there have been numerous books published on both Kew Gardens and Edward Bawden, by combining their stories, Skipwith & Webb have created something truly unique. u

LJS Property founder Lucinda Sanford on interior trends and keeping ahead of the market Interview elaine o'connell
ABS: Property prices in London are increasing by the day. How can people add value to their existing homes and extend the space for growing families? LS: Houses are valued on paper by their square footage and when I am working with investors that is at the forefront of their minds. The up, side and down principle (attic, side return and basement) remains a clear way of doing that. However, both owners and investors alike need to make sure that additional square footage is useful square footage or nobody will be willing to pay anything for it. A house has to be designed for those that are living in it or buying it and that is what adds value. ABS: Can you tell us about the most recent project you've completed? LS: We have just completed the full refurbishment of a Lion House in SW6 and two other properties in the area. These have been designed for real living and decorated with character and style to make them homes that people remember. For the Lion House we added a large basement allowing further
ABSOLUTELY: Can you tell us the story behind LJS Property? What services do you provide and what inspired you to start-up? LUCINDA SANFORD: I bought a flat in 2006 in London that needed full modernisation. If felt very natural for me to buy a project rather than a done-up flat. After years spent working in an interior design shop, I knew the principles of design. The construction side, however, was newer but didn’t daunt me. On completion of the project I had the bug and wanted to do more. I realised that there was scope in the market for me to offer the whole service rather than one individual aspect. As a company we now do everything from property search through to renovation, build and interior design. I am lucky – I have an ability to see the end design image but also the messy steps you often need to take to get there and how to work them out in a logical process. I recognised that there were very few companies offering this holistic approach in the market – especially with consideration for long-term value and budget. ABS: What do you think are the current trends for people building and designing their houses? LS: I do a lot of work with families, so the consistent theme is how you balance family living and all the scooters, buggies, bikes and school bags with the reality of a London house. Storage is the continual theme that arises again and again. The last few houses we have designed have seen me adding in a hallway in the central part of a terraced area. This steals space from the traditional ‘double reception’ of a Victorian/Edwardian terrace but makes for real-life living.

HOMES & INTERIORS / DESIGN AND BUILD space for three young boys, a utility room for ample amounts of laundry, a chic but practical hallway and a guest bedroom and bathroom. Further to this we also created on the ground floor an additional bedroom and en-suite with pocket doors for their nanny that fits the layout of the house but which allows for a grown-up, private and peaceful space. ABS: What advice would you give to a first-time buyer when looking to renovate their new home? LS: Beware of the quote! I know clients sometimes see our initial estimates and take a breath. While always competitive on the building work side, we always allow for finishes. Switch and socket plate covers, door handles, wardrobes, carpets, shower screens, a hook for your bathrobe etc are often costs people forget about. However, these figures add up. Each item may only be £10, but if you need 100 of them the cost quickly increases. For this reason we try to show people the whole picture from the very beginning. Without the detail that is how people get stuck – and cash flow becomes a
I RECOGNISED THAT THERE WERE VERY FEW COMPANIES OFFERING A HOLISTIC APPROACH IN THE MARKET nightmare. It is in the contractor and client’s interest to know both these parts of the build and design process. I am currently working on the design side with clients in Brook Green on a large house refurbishment and basement dig out – this is their first large project and the cost of these items has been a big part of the remit so they can stay within budget but not compromise the look of the project. For example, in the kitchen the lighting isn’t all that simple. A kitchen needs to be practical throughout the day for feeding children, but in the evening it should be a space for entertaining. Dining rooms are a luxury space we can’t all have, so I always try to make sure that kitchen lighting is thought about so that at night we can create ambience. ABS: Where do you source your wallpapers and furnishings? Are they London based? LS: I love living in London as it gives me great access to Chelsea Harbour and all the smaller design shops around. Although many of my clients know about these places, often they do not have the time to get there so I will go instead. My job is also to
65 Chiswick_Nov_Interior_TrendsV2.indd 65
find suppliers who offer something a little different that they might not know about. I really enjoy showing clients tiles or fabrics that look fantastic but are half the cost of the high street shops. Paint is my favourite way to make things beautiful. There are wonderful colours available at Little Greene and their extremely helpful colour scales mean you can layer colour up. I am also thrilled with the VILLAVERDE lights we have supplied recently and love Bert Frank lighting as well. Decorex this year at Syon Park was another great inspiration. Whilst it’s always good to see the bigger names, there are also smaller, up-and-coming brands to discover, which is always exciting. ABS: You also own a paint shop. Why did you feel the need to open your own and what colours are currently in vogue? LS: My husband and I opened our paint shop, Sanford and Shane two years ago. It was a natural off-shoot from LJS Property. It means I can offer my clients and general shoppers a huge selection of colours and finishes. I have always loved using colour – my view is that if you are paying someone to paint, then use the investment as a decorative feature. White has its place, as does taupe, but strong greys, blues, and statement colours are back and I love it! Playing with finishes using matt and gloss and contrasting woodwork colours changes the whole feel of the room. There is often a belief that woodwork should be white – white jeans, for example, though fabulous, do few people any favours, so why should it do anything for a Victorian bannister spindle. This is what I tell my clients! u ljsproperty.com

Trimarchi’s Way Italian architect Mario Trimarchi on compiling the best Alessi products W o r d s R o m y va n d e n B r o e k e
‘C
an you hear me?’ Despite his thick Italian accent, architect Mario Trimarchi’s voice rings sharp. ‘Yes,’ I respond, ‘loud and clear.’ His voice softens and so begins a flowing discussion with a passionate man about his career, his art and his dedication to Italian super brand, Alessi. Trimarchi is a proper creative: a multitalented architect-cum-designer-cum-art director who has spent the duration of his career in Milan. Moving from Sicily in the 80s, Trimarchi began studying at renowned Domus Academy: a school flagged ‘The Home of Italian Design’. Milan quickly became the only place for Trimarchi to grow as a designer. ‘Milan was full of energy due to Archimea and Memphis [Italian design studios] and the ubiquitous avant-garde movement.’ Later pilfered by Michele de Lucchi, Trimarchi joined the seminal Olivetti design studio and began work on a new kind of design project, exploiting new computer technologies. He then went on to launch his own branding agency called FRAGILE, which champions complete corporate identity design. The agency builds the character of brands and

companies by taking on every facet, from architecture through to industrial design. Now a veteran on the design scene, Trimarchi proudly calls himself an architect of the ‘freehand generation’. This term, ‘freehand generation’, was coined in recent years since technological developments changed the face of design. A freehand designer is someone who
still uses drawing and sketching as their primary research method, rather than relying on computers to build blueprints. Being a freehand designer and using more ‘primitive tools and processes, such as drawing, sketching, pencils and pens’ is something he holds dear. ‘Every morning when I wake up I take a piece of paper and I draw,’ discloses Trimarchi. ‘I fill a number of sheets of paper nearly every day as a way of understanding shapes and shadows. I only draw in black and white, so the position of the sun and the shadows it casts are a very important part of my process.’ Is he part artist, part designer then, I ask? ‘It is very difficult to understand the borders between art and design. Artists very much live to design, but designers are very concerned not to call their job ‘art’ because it seems too ambitious.’ It is a complicated distinction for Trimarchi, but he, himself, admits to having dabbled in the conceptual world of design, giving the example of his famous coffee maker, Ossidiana, which he created for kitchenware brand Alessi earlier this year. He describes the object as more of a sculpture than anything, and as a product of his new, experimental approach to design. ‘You mix the disciplines and the

Alessi’s seventy most successful products taken from a portfolio of more than 2,000. Trimarchi refers to the project as a compilation of Alessi’s most popular and successful works, ‘the criteria is the same one Pink Floyd use when selecting 20 hits for a gig. They select them because they like them, because they are very successful, because they belong to different parts of their career and because they represent them.’ This notion of compiling items as a means of telling Alessi’s story is very important to Trimarchi and it was the inspiration behind the packaging design for the Super & Popular series. Each chosen item comes boxed in a thoughtfully designed box, conceived by Trimarchi, covered with sketches, photos and quotes. His inspiration was heightened by the notion of these products turning up on Mars. He wanted the packaging to explain how we live on this planet and why we need, use and have these objects in the first place by letting ‘the objects speak about their lives.’
approach. If you design something as an industrial product then you start from the gestures of a sculpture.’ In that case, he is an artist too? ‘I don’t want to say this means I am an artist,’ he asserts, ‘or that the product is a sculpture. I don’t want to say this. But the approach is the same [as that] used to create a work of art.’ Trimarchi’s freehand style, applied to research and design, is less common these days as it can be limiting when faced with a marketing brief. Trimarchi has worked with numerous big brands in

the past including Philips, Matsushita and Artemide, but now focuses exclusively on collaborations with Alessi. In an honest tone, he admits it’s because at this stage in his life and career he wants complete creative control. And, unlike many other brands he has worked with, Alessi allows him to develop and work on every single facet of a project, from start to finish. Trimarchi has a venerable relationship with Alessi, both parties holding each other in high esteem. He has designed for the brand on numerous occasions, so was the natural choice for its managing director, Alberto Alessi, when the brand were looking for an art director for Alessis's recent project, Super & Popular. Super & Popular is a curated selection of
Alessi is different to many of its competitors as it consistently takes the time to celebrate the designers as much as it does the products. It’s about collaborations rather than just objects, which takes Alessi's approach to a whole new level; ‘They are shaping the future of the home together with these designers by creating functional objects, new icons for the home and objects that tell stories’ remarks Trimarchi. And that, for him, is reason enough to stick by them. u alessi.com

he second trimester is supposed to be when you glow. All those positive pregnancy concepts suddenly come into play, and if you’re lucky you’ll have all and sundry describing you as ‘radiant’ and ‘dewy’. In my case, though, ‘dewy’ seems a short step away from ‘greasy’, and entering the fourth month hasn’t meant the downsides have simply disappeared. Peeing for England is a given, as your baby grows and puts the squeeze on your other internal organs, bladder included. Many women see their morning sickness fade away at this stage only to be replaced by stints of digestive trouble and bloating. Whether pregnancy ‘becomes you’ or not is largely down to the hormones swarming through your system, so try not to get too worked up about it. The simple fact is, the beginning of your second trimester will hopefully see you settling into your pregnancy, and is therefore a good time to take stock and pay some attention to your rapidly changing body. Tackle stretch marks now by oiling up after a bath or shower: the Estelle and
Thild body oil is a new beauty best-seller. It’s also important to keep up with some form of exercise – not only can this improve your endurance during labour but it will help with maintenance, so there’s less to do post-baby. Remember, it’s unlikely you’ll get to do much at all immediately postpartum, so you want to keep your strength up for as long as possible before the sprog pops. I visited TenPilates for a special prenatal Reformer Pilates class, which I preferred to a prenatal yoga session. Truth be told, I was being a little over-cautious turning up to the latter (I hadn’t worked out in a while). All the other mothers were fit to burst and I was barely showing; and while I was impatient to get on with more dynamic moves, everyone else was tuning in to baby and extending the odd limb. I must have looked like I’d taken the class by mistake. At the four-month mark, I’d recommend sticking to regular yoga classes – with some slight adjustments. It’s just a case of informing your instructor that you’re preggers. I also went to the Aveda Institute for a special pregnancy massage designed to relieve tension built up in the first

Many health and beauty treatments are not recommended for pregnant women, but if you shop around you’ll find therapists trained to work safely with expectant mothers. Superstar pupils with E grades at A-Level and headteachers hopping with anger? Amanda Constance reports on summer's marking debacle. Wo r d s A m a n d a C o n s ta n c e

magine this. You have a bright teenager; you are stumping up the fees for them to do their A-levels at private school, with tuition on the side. You guide them towards those coveted A* grades and a place at Oxbridge, or a Russell Group university. Yet when the results arrive, the As have become Bs and Ds – and even a U. But worse awaits when you discover that your precious genius was downgraded through no fault of their own, but rather because those marking the papers weren’t up to the job. This is no recurring nightmare of a Tiger Mother but scary fact. According to some leading heads in the independent sector, perfectly bright pupils at top private schools are being penalised because inexperienced markers cannot recognise A* material. Independent schools are making a record number of appeals against grades awarded in GCSEs and A-levels this year because of concerns over shortcomings in the marking process. It is believed the total number of re-marks demanded by schools will top 310,000. There is mounting anger amongst headteachers over exam standards, particularly in relation to more ‘subjective’, essay-based disciplines such as English literature and history. Examples of inaccurate marking include: u An AS-level politics student from Guildford High School achieved the equivalent of an E grade, even though her essay was regarded as so good that it was quoted in an examiner’s report as an example of outstanding work. The paper was re-marked as a B and – in a largely unprecedented step – graded a third time by the chief examiner to gain an A. u Brighton College has seen the total number of GCSEs graded A* in all
THERE IS MOUNTING ANGER AMONGST HEADTEACHERS OVER EXAM STANDARDS subjects jump, from 44.5 to 48.5 per cent, after re-marks of English and religious studies papers saw 200 pupils awarded an improved classification. u One pupil at Latymer Upper School was turned down by Durham University when one of his papers was rated a D grade. When the school asked to see his exam paper, they found the marks had been added up incorrectly, by 20 marks fewer, and that he should have received an A grade. By then Durham had withdrawn its offer and he will now go to his second choice university. Headteachers are demanding a revamp of the examinations system, including greater incentives for experienced markers and better standards of training.
79 Chiswick_Nov_Education.indd 79
Fiona Boulton, Headmistress of Guildford High, said: ‘Some staff don’t often come across A* material and therefore don’t recognise it when they see it. We don’t pay examiners enough… so the incentives to become a marker are significantly reduced.’ Glenys Stacey, chief regulator of Ofqual, the qualifications watchdog, said exam boards would be required to publish data from next year showing how many errors were down to individual markers or wider ‘system problems’ but insisted that ‘overall, the system of marking works well.’ But that is not what the qualifications watchdog has concluded about language A-Levels. Last month Ofqual announced that A-levels in Modern Languages would be marked more fairly from next summer, following an investigation which found that the brightest candidates were being denied A* grades by inconsistent marking and poorly designed exams. Ofqual’s findings were damning. It found that the marking and design of the exams were flawed and needed immediate reform. The report also concluded that the most able students were not getting the highest grades due to the way in which the marking rules have been designed by exam boards. Peter Hamilton, Chair of the Headmasters’ Conference Academic Policy Committee and Headmaster of Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys School said: ‘Thanks to the joint persistence of the state and independent schools’ languages associations, Ofqual will now be acting to correct historic injustices that have hugely damaged confidence in these exam grades over recent years.’ Headteachers will no doubt be keen to see if there are radical changes in the pipeline for other subjects, too. u

SPRING INTO ACTION
Former Petersham Nurseries Head Chef Skye Gyngell brings Spring to Somerset House with her first solo venture Interview Gemma Billington
GEMMA BILLINGTON: Your first solo restaurant, Spring, is set to open in October in Somerset House. Can you explain, in a nutshell, what Spring is all about? SKYE GYNGELL: Spring brings warmth and elegance within a beautiful dining space. We want the restaurant to be inclusive not exclusive, a place families can come for an early supper and where people can also come after the theatre. The food at Spring is celebrated for its conviviality and the joyfulness of sharing seasonal produce. Our cooking is heartfelt, wholesome, produce driven and cooked by a team of people who are passionate about what they do and who feel truly privileged to work with beautiful ingredients. GB: What’s the meaning behind the name? SG: Spring is of course a nod to the seasons and reflects my cooking but, more than that, I chose it because it feels optimistic, hopeful, like a new beginning. GB: Yours is the first restaurant in Somerset House to be located in the New Wing. Can you tell us about Spring’s look and interior design? SG: I fell in love with the site because of its gorgeous natural light. I had a bit of a moment when we first visited what was then a very dreary space as this stunning shard

of light was streaming through one of the arches and I instantly knew that we could transform this site into something truly beautiful. I’ve been fortunate enough to have a team of fantastic professionals working with me on this project – Stuart Forbes Architecture, the incredibly talented Jinny Blom who has designed our very own indoor atrium, and artists such as Emma Peascod and Valeria Nascimento. My sister Briony has led on the interiors and has shared my vision for a light, airy space which exudes warmth through is textured furnishings and feminine flourishes. GB: Spring’s menu is based on seasonal produce. As we’re now well into the winter months, what sort of ingredients have you been using and what can we expect on the menu? SG: For me, cooking seasonally simply makes sense. It is very comforting knowing that ingredients work so harmoniously together from their own season. When Spring launches in October, we will have gorgeous autumnal produce like Porcini mushrooms, lovely squash and courgettes and fresh seafood of langoustine and scallops. GB: Where have you been sourcing the ingredients? Do you use a lot of Londonbased suppliers?

FOOD & DRINK / INTERVIEW I MAINTAIN THAT I WILL NEVER COOK WITH A MICHELIN STAR IN MIND SG: I always aim to source locally and we are very fortunate to have such high quality produce from all over the UK at our disposal. Organic beef and rare breed pork from Wales and biodynamic fruit and vegetables from Herefordshire. Our coffee is from Allpress Roastery in east London and tisanes (herbal teas) from Postcard Teas. GB: Would you say that there are similarities between Spring and Petersham Nurseries? The rustic setting of the Nurseries obviously reflected the kind of food you served – but have you brought the same kind of ethos to Spring, even though it’s in a more formal environment? SG: The style of my cooking has not changed, I will just be substituting the shabby chic for clean lines. Spring is very elegant and heartfelt and this absolutely compliments my cooking. GB: You were awarded a Michelin star at Petersham Nurseries but I’ve read that, because of the ensuing pressure, in the end it was almost something of a curse. Do you stand by this? SG: It was a long time ago, and Spring is going to be a very different restaurant to Petersham. I was cooking on a temporary stove in a tiny kitchen, and the star came so unexpectedly. I maintain that I will never cook with a Michelin star in mind; I cook the way I do because of sheer love and passion, not for applause and accolades. GB: How and why did you first get into cooking? SG: I had a job washing up in a restaurant in Sydney during my first year at university, and although it wasn’t very glamorous, I
instantly fell in love with the atmosphere in the kitchen and the rush of service. I started to get involved in basic tasks, like making stock and pastry, and this fed my eagerness to learn more and my passion for food continued to grow. I feel the most calm and relaxed when I’m in the kitchen. Cooking is my therapy. GB: You grew up in Australia. How did the food and lifestyle over there inspire you? SG: Having lived in London now for over 30 years, I have come to appreciate that what Australian cooking really exudes is confidence. The confidence to have several cuisines on a single menu, be it Asian, Middle Eastern or European. It is this melting pot of flavours which makes Australian cuisine so unique. My cooking has always been simple and ingredient led, and this perhaps stems from the traditional Australian BBQ. Warm summer evenings with friends and family, seasonal salads and grilled meats. It is very simple and relaxed and the food is enjoyed for its conviviality. GB: You currently live in Shepherd’s Bush. Where do you like to go out to eat in the area? SG: I mostly enjoy simple cooking at home with my two daughters, but on the occasions
85 Chiswick_Nov_SkyeGyngell.indd 85
where I do get time to enjoy a meal out, I go to the River Café for special occasions or The Brackenbury. They are entirely different, but I feel at home in both. GB: Who are some of your all-time favourite chefs and whose cookbook do you turn to repeatedly? SG: I have been inspired and regularly turn to three very strong women: Maggie Beer, Alice Waters and Ruth Rogers. These women share my immense passion for produce led cooking which is from the heart, the kind of food you want to scrape your bread through. GB: What are the three ingredients you couldn’t live without? SG: I’m not sure that I could narrow it down to just three! I think it is the quality of the ingredients themselves that speak volumes when cooking, although proper seasoning is crucial, particularly good quality salt and extra virgin olive oil. GB: What is your ultimate comfort food? SG: Vegemite on crusty sourdough toast, with lots of butter! Such a treat. u Spring opens on 14 October; somersethouse.org.uk

take on a popular gastropub dish, and I'd highly recommended it. My friend went for the baked Camembert, a dish you can’t really go wrong with, especially one served with tasty cauliflower fritters and seeded crackers for optimum dunking. I followed with the poached sea trout with roasted broccoli and butternut and quinoa salad. It was a light but surprisingly satisfying dish. The fish can be replaced with chicken, if preferred, or left without as a tasty vegetarian option. In danger of ordering far too healthily (bar the accompanying large glass of house white wine), I devoured the superbly decadent warm chocolate pudding served with a puddle of rich chocolate sauce and pistachio ice cream. My friend’s apple and blackberry crumble, beautifully presented in a copper saucepan, was a dish that even granny couldn’t have bettered. Thoroughly satisfied and waddling our way back through the (still impressive) crowd, I couldn’t help but feel that the icing on the cake would have been to check in to one of the above rooms for the ultimate night of indulgence. Oh well, I know better for next time. u

ollowing an extensive refurbishment earlier this year, the Orange Tree Richmond has re-opened as a pub, restaurant and boutique hotel, with the 13 brand new bedrooms occupying the upstairs space where the neighbouring Orange Tree Theatre was born. It’s a Friday night when my friend and I stop by for dinner, and it’s bursting at the seams. ‘You should see it when the rugby’s on,’ our waiter quips, slightly exasperated, as he shows us to our table. We’ve had to battle through the jubilant post-work crowds towards the back of the building, where the Fentons Dining Room is located. Altogether it’s a convivial environment; the restaurant continues the tasteful botanical
theme which starts as you enter via the pub. There are Kew Gardens archive-style prints of plants and herbs along the walls, a light green colour palette and scatterings of plant pots, candles and even the odd birdcage or two. It feels relaxed enough to pop in for a bite to eat after work, yet elegant enough to warrant a reservation for special occasions. It’s the same ethos with the food; traditional British fare with a seasonal focus, executed with sophistication, and pub classics to satisfy all tastes. Supping a zesty Lady Fenton cocktail (Disaronno, Southern Comfort and Sipsmith Sloe Gin topped with orange juice – the wonderfully unique cocktail menu is reason enough to visit), I decide to try the crispy squid with marinated courgette with white bean salad and lemon & basil mayonnaise for starters. It’s an interesting

t’s rather telling that when luxury Asian hotel chain Dorsett decided to expand into Europe, their first port of call was not London’s glittering West End or trendy Soho, but Shepherd’s Bush. It’s a clever move given the area’s growing appeal – its location a veritable stone’s throw away from Westfield Shopping Centre and a few doors down from the famous Empire. Residents will have noticed construction work going on for some time now and their curiosity will be rewarded when, this November, the hotel throws its enormous revolving doors open fully, following a soft launch earlier this autumn. By keeping the beautiful original Gradelisted façade, Dorsett Shepherd’s Bush is a sophisticated feat of architecture that appears both striking and imposing whilst remaining oddly subtle. It almost feels like it’s been in the area for years. u

ictures, the in-house restaurant, boasts predominantly British fare with a spattering of Asianinspired dishes. I started with a quinoa, pomegranate and haloumi salad followed by flat noodles and prawns. The brownie I had for dessert served with pecans, raspberries and ice cream was absolutely delicious. The best part, however, is the fact that the prices are very reasonable and the portions, satisfyingly large. It’s a smart way to attract the crowds and compete with the many eateries popping-up in Shepherd’s Bush. Afternoon tea and specialist sandwiches served at lunchtime are sure to prove stiff competition too. u
n keeping with its Asian roots, the Dorsett look is contemporary East meets West, and despite the ostentatious sounding décor (gold, velvet, diamanté, traditional print feature wallpaper and mirrored furniture) it stays well and truly on the right side of good taste. It’s business appropriate but not in a cold, distant way and the staff are extremely cheerful and only too willing to help. The rooms are spacious and elegant, with a luxuriously big shower and bath combo. One of the highlights of the hotel is to sup a pleasingly boozy cocktail in the Atrium bar. Its ingenious layout enables the visitor to take-in the hotel’s spectacular design, with a vertiginous, dazzling view of all seven floors from the inside, right up to the ceiling skylight. u

Good morning,
VIETNAM Holly Baxter returns to the highlight of her backpacking days, the UNESCO World Heritage town of Hoi An, Vietnam W o r d s H o l ly B a x t e r
V
ietnam is not the first place you might choose to take your mother. But it was for me, one freezing February morning when I’d just negotiated another difficult phone call. As I clicked off the phone, the idea that we should visit Hoi An reared its head for the first time. It had been a tough year for us both. Work was demanding, and she had undergone a divorce; my younger sister was in full technicolour teenage brat mode. Usually so close, we now argued regularly. I was yearning to return to the South East Asian landscape that had amazed me in my backpacking teenage years. She was yearning for a luxurious yet affordable escape from a deluge of teen tantrums and divorce drama. Travelling to a small Vietnamese town with a middle-aged mother in tow seemed completely ridiculous and absolutely out of the question. Yet, almost as soon as the idea occurred to me, we were both dead set on making it a reality. Six weeks later, our plane touched down after 18 hours onto the underused tarmac at Da Nang Airport. Hoi An is a small town, flanked by the metropolises of Hanoi in the north and Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) in the south, with miles of dirt roads and rice paddy fields

in between. Travelling by road is possible, but notoriously slow; the only realistic method of reaching Hoi An is by touching down at its local airport half an hour away in the adjoining town. From there, a taxi for the half hour ride to Hoi An hovers around the $15 mark – and yes, the drivers (as well as everyone else in Vietnam) will accept American dollars as readily as they do Vietnamese dong. From what I’d heard from fellow travellers while in Ho Chi Minh City on my last few trips, Hoi An is the town that has it all: picturesque countryside vignettes hovering unbelievably close to ancient Chinese and Japanese architecture, unspoilt beaches only minutes away from markets filled with
merchants who will churn you out a completely bespoke silk dress or wool suit in a matter of hours, lantern-covered rivers running through a town where residents range from elderly women in conical hats selling fruit from wooden wagons to their spritely grandchildren navigating the streets on pink mopeds and catching pictures of the tourists with their iPads. It’s hard to believe that Hoi An can be all these things, and such high praise risks condemning it to saccharine hyperbole. And in many ways, it would be untrue to say that this small part of

TRAVEL / HOI AN
Vietnam seems like paradise, when our first glimpse of it through a taxi window was of hundreds of honking motorbikes bellowing their way through dusty streets. Yet, once you have been here, you can’t imagine a better place to return to. As my mother left for her plane at the end of our ten day trip, she was moved to tears by the thought that she might never have the chance to return. But what is it, specifically, that makes Hoi An so special? Partly, it’s the sheer diversity of terrain: our small boutique hotel at the edge of town (5* suites for
WE DISCOVERED A PALM TREE LINED BEACH AND RAUCOUS SEA £26 each per night) looked over paddy fields populated with rice pickers and water buffalo on one side, and an urban scene of street hawkers advertising grilled coconut crisps on the other. Like

most hotels in Hoi An, the Essence lent us bicycles and maps of the surrounding area for free; fifteen minutes down the road astride them, we discovered a palm tree lined beach and a raucous sea to cool down in. A further five minutes from there, we came across the vegetable village of Tra Que: acres of lush green land as far as the eye can see, tended into neat lines of every herb and vegetable possible. Everywhere we looked, there was a strikingly different scene. Those who live in the town are evangelical about its charms. Women on

TRAVEL / HOI AN their way home from dropping children at school or taking a break from selling fruit and handmade wares in the town approached us as we wandered the winding streets, asking why we were visiting and what we thought of the place. They told us about their families, one weaving us a tale about her renegade sister who had married a German tourist and moved to Hamburg. Two minutes off the main tourist walkways, adventurous tourists can find their way into the semi-chaotic local cloth market, where an unbelievably small Vietnamese woman stood on an upturned box to reach my 5’3” mother’s shoulders with a tape measure, and tailor-made a Chanel copy suit for her for $45. Her friend took us to a stall out of the sun and expertly threaded our eyebrows and painted our nails for $5 as we perched on tiny plastic seats. We bought handmade
TRADERS TELL YOU TO BE ‘HAPPY AND LUCKY’ AS YOU PASS bags to our own proportions, and were even offered bespoke reading glasses. ‘There is nothing that cannot be made in Hoi An,’ one waitress told us proudly. Due in no small part to its lovingly tended architecture, Hoi An was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. UNESCO describes it as ‘an exceptionally well preserved example of a South East Asian trading port dating from the 15th to the 19th century.’ The ancient buildings, adorned with lanterns made by silksellers sat in shopfronts that line the streets, are kept in good repair by mainly local donations: residents’ pride in the area is strong. It’s hard to believe that, as
recently as 1968, this area of Vietnam was infamous for shocking coverage of the My Lai Massacre, a violent purging of a nearby village by American soldiers. The Vietnamese of today have not forgotten that war: charity boxes collecting for the victims of Agent Orange punctuate the winding streets, but there is no bitterness toward western visitors. Instead, westerners are welcomed without suspicion (and often photographed as exotic curiosities.) Meanwhile, the happygo-lucky atmosphere – where traders quite literally tell you to ‘be happy and lucky’ as you pass – is infectious: my usually cautious mother hopped readily onto the back of a motorbike and asked a local boy to drive us down the road to the herb village, to my immense surprise. Hoi An is dissected by the Thu Bon river, which – despite the food and cloth markets jostling for attention further in – is its own centre of commerce. Rather than visiting merchants, now Vietnamese children selling candles line the banks, while the riverside proper is abundant with fishing boats waiting to take you anywhere you could possibly hope to visit. My mother and I took a private $10 boat to a village one day, and a $5 ride down the river at night with candles on our last night. We were lucky enough to have our final night fall on the monthly lunar celebration, where all traffic and electric lighting is banned, and the town lights up with the candles of a thousand lanterns and the burning of incense sticks at tiny impromptu shrines outside homes and businesses. We let our paper lanterns float down the river from our small wooden boat, and made silent wishes. u

BEST OF THE REST
S
outh East Asia is an incredibly diverse region with surprisingly well connected flight paths, so it makes sense to spend your time there in more than one country. One underrated city is Manila in the Philippines, best accessed via Hong Kong from Da Nang Airport at Hoi An on Cathay Pacific Airlines. By far the most decadent choices in Manila are Raffles and its sister hotel the Fairmont, both situated in the upmarket Makati district. Luxury comes at a more-thanreasonable price for the western traveller, due to the fact that the Philippines suffered a downturn in tourism after Typhoon Haiyan. One night in a room at the Fairmont Makati comes in at around £135, even in peak season, so if you’ve been budgeting your way around the region this is a great place to set down your bags, collapse onto a queen-size bed and enjoy glass of champagne while watching the sun set. Quality really does come cheap in the Philippines – but renewed interest in the region means these prices won’t last forever.

’ve always enjoyed Ealing. I started my career here eight years ago in my first role as a lettings negotiator, so finding myself back here managing a branch means a lot to me. In that time, I have worked for a number of respected estate agents in the West London area which has given me a great grounding in the wider market in general. After eight years, I still find situations which challenge me, which is really what I enjoy about this job – every day can be completely different, from the properties we take on to the clients we represent and the tenants that we find homes for. It’s important to keep learning, and in property, once you gain a passion for the industry, the sky is the limit. I’m lucky enough to live in Ealing as well as work here and I really appreciate the community spirit that this area has to offer. It makes my job very fulfilling and it’s great to work in an area that you feel very strongly about. There are many selling points to living here – along with its close knit community feel, this leafy suburb also offers great transport links and a rich mix of different cultures. Many families and young professionals are attracted here for the spacious properties and several large parks on offer. For families in particular, there is an array of schools to choose from, both private and state, which offers good variety.

We’ve seen a huge rise in property values in Ealing recently and this is mirrored in the rental values being achieved. The upcoming Crossrail which is anticipated to complete in 2019 has spurred many investors to look at this area and we’ve subsequently seen many more landlords coming to market here. As demand for this area has risen, we’ve seen a 55% increase in registered tenants in just one year and rental prices are reflecting this increased popularity. We have a good selection of large Edwardian and Victorian houses, many of which are now beautiful period conversions. We are also seeing a greater number of new build apartments, in particular located close to the Broadway, which are proving incredibly popular among commuters. Rental prices here range from around £1,500 per month for a two bedroom flat up to around £2,500 per month for a four bedroom family house. In certain locations and for really beautiful homes, we’ve been known to achieve up to £6,000 per month for family homes. As we negotiate the busy Autumn market, things are looking very positive and I expect that as we enter things will remain very buoyant.

MARKET COMMENT
C
hiswick property owners have been reaping the rewards of the healthy increases in property prices across London, however the area still offers fantastic value and we continue to see an overspill of clients from our established Fulham, Chelsea and Notting Hill offices. Many clients are keen to know what is achieved in pounds per sq ft of recent transactions; The Glebe Estate has achieved around £1000 per sq ft and the premier
roads in Bedford Park, up to £1400 per sq ft. This does vary from property to property and I take time to explain to clients that this can only be used as a guide and a successful marketing campaign will determine the true final value. The “No” vote in Scotland has been another source of confidence ending the relatively quiet summer months and our local offices are still happily reporting multiple bids on properties that are correctly priced to our clients. With the possible introduction of Mansion Tax following April’s 2015 General Election and the increase in applicant registration, now is a great time to sell as there is a phenomenal demand for family homes and investment properties throughout Chiswick. Buyers flock to Chiswick
S
o far, the second half of the year has seen a less frenzied property market in London, compared to the first half of the year. This has led to a far healthier pace of price growth and activity. However, in Brook Green the higher end of the property market is still seeing strong price growth, as buyers who are priced out of neighbouring Holland Park and Notting Hill continue to flock here. Demand for family houses is particularly strong and the increased number of buyers are being satisfied by a greater number of properties coming onto the market and I expect these trading conditions to continue for the remainder of the year.
A beautifully appointed and very tastefully presented detached family home.
S
et on a popular tree lined avenue close to Ealing Broadway. The current layout is the result of a thoughtful and practical re-configuration of the original accommodation that now provides excellent family living space with four separate areas together with seven bedrooms; three of which have en-suite facilities. The kitchen and family room works as the heart of the house with a wonderful open plan kitchen/preparation area, seating and dining areas and direct access to the garden. One of the double bedrooms is currently used as a dedicated gym, with another used as a study. The decoration throughout is extremely stylish and uniformed and fittings are of a very high standard.

Property I’d most like on my books and why? Chiswick House, which has to be the most iconic building in the area. On the grapevine we hear it gets viewings every day - even though it’s not on the market! Best place to invest? I would be buying at the west end of Chiswick High Road down towards Gunnersbury. It has been less expensive traditionally but Chiswick Business Park and the stack of new flats down there mean it is a great place to invest. The most interesting property I have been involved in is? We sold a house in St Peter’s seen such frenetic market conditions with the majority of properties going to a sealed bid within a very short period of marketing. The seasonal summer lull saw existing properties that were under offer successfully selling, indicating that prices were holding. We are now entering the next busy phase, with a good supply of properties coming to the market and an equal balance of interested buyers. There is a note of caution in the market but the projection is for a stable market in terms of property prices for the foreseeable future.

Square with an architect’s studio in the garden where James Woodford sculpted ten 6 foot bronze statues for the Queen’s Coronation in 1953. The toughest sale and why? At the moment almost every deal is tough. I cannot put enough emphasis on using a proper solicitor, not just searching Google for “cheapest online conveyancing”. Finest property showcase: A semi detached house on Cambridge Road North. Like a house in Kensington (for a quarter of the price!).

1. Why this area? Chiswick is hugely popular with its cafe culture and village like feel. It is a friendly and safe area consisting of families and young professionals with plenty to do for all. Chiswick also offers some of England’s top schools.
in Sunbury from award-winning Linden Homes. Properties include two, three, four and five-bedroom houses as well as a pair of twobedroom apartments. Buyers have the choice of 10 different modern house styles to suit their tastes with prices for the 29 homes starting at approximately £400,000 for a two-bedroom home. One of the key features of this family-focused development is the generous proportions of the homes; especially the five-bedroom houses spread over three storeys with large bedrooms and living areas. 0844 644 2989; lindenhomes.co.uk

2. What is your company ethos? The ‘Orchards of London Difference’ is something our staff strive to work to, through accountability, enthusiasm, energy and honestly advising our clients on all aspects of the market. We are very proud to have won awards for our customer service nationally, and I feel that this is a true reflection of the dedication our staff put into serving our clients. 3. What properties are you most excited about having on your books? There are two. Dartmouth House, one of the most exclusive properties in Chiswick. At £5,500 per week, it offers complete privacy surrounded by a stunning walled garden, a true country manor feel in the heart of London. The other is a property on Vanbrugh Road in Bedford Park which is in itself magical and beautiful. One of the rooms is painted all over with Disney characters like Peter Pan. 4. What do you predict for the property market in autumn 2014? With the sales market slowing down we are looking for the lettings market to start to gradually increase. Chiswick remains hugely popular for rentals, especially large corporate lets and relocations, generally the Autumn market is good in this area as clients want to be settled for the holidays.

eatherstone Leigh, independent estate agents specialising in sales and lettings in South and West London, have relocated their East Sheen offices, to a prime, new, more central location at 361 Upper Richmond Road West. Over the past 18 months, all 12 months all of Featherstone Leigh’s branches have undergone a complete internal
refurbishment, creating a timeless look, using the popular estate agents signature colours. The new office location is already attracting new instructions for both sales and lettings. Philip Tibble, Director at Featherstone Leigh comments “The more prominent location and larger office space with a double office frontage has already made a difference. We have taken on a number of new instructions, including a 4 bedroom property on Stanley Road, which we have marketed and sold since moving offices!” 020 8876 4567; featherstoneleigh.co.uk

inlay Brewer is delighted to announce the opening of its new branch in Acton. Joining our established offices in Brook Green and Askew Road, the new Acton branch is headed up by director Rista Bakovic who says “This latest addition to the Finlay Brewer family enables us to offer owners, landlords and those looking to buy or rent in West London an informed and independent view about this exciting area and to offer even more opportunities to our clients as our horizons continue to expand westwards. Please do come in to see us at 27 Churchfield Road to discuss what we can do for you.” Acton was the birthplace of The Who and Pete Townshend wrote a song on his album All The Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes called ‘Stardom in Acton’. Which is exactly what Finlay Brewer is looking to achieve in its new home!

LOWDOWN FOR LANDLORDS
How has the demographic in your area changed over the last five years?
O
ver the past five years, Brook Green has continued to build on its reputation as an eminently desirable place to live in terms of its proximity to Holland Park and Notting Hill, the great schools, unparalleled transport links, fantastic amenities including Westfield and the variety of people who have chosen to make the area their home including plenty of Europeans. This reputation has in turn increased interest and the popularity of neighbouring areas including Shepherds Bush, the area around Askew Road and Acton, where Finlay Brewer have just opened their third office. The on-going development around White City including TV Centre will continue to ensure that allure of this part of West London remains high and allows the area to continue to diversify and grow.
