Welcome

Debi Roberts, the CEO of the OLLIE
Foundation, on the joys of Christmas in Hertfordshire – but why we should be aware of the people around us

iving in Hertfordshire, we get to enjoy the best of dining, shopping and beautiful countryside – and December never disappoints. I have always loved this time of year. Having a family around has allowed me to indulge every whimsical seasonal tradition and create some of my own. It’s a wonderful time of the year, but for many it can be a particularly hard time too. As 2021 draws to an end and we think about spending time with our loved ones, I’m reminded that many families will be apart from each other, and some will be spending their first Christmas without someone special. As CEO of the OLLIE Foundation (theolliefoundation.org), ), a local suicide prevention charity, we see the reality of this every day and we know how hard the festive season can be. As the days shorten and I decorate my home in lights and baubles and wrap presents for those I love, I am gently reminded of the message from the book The Gift – that of all the things we can give, the greatest gift is in fact our presence. Last year OLLIE started a new tradition and hosted our first ‘Just Another Day’ online event. I hope with all my heart that you don’t have a reason to join, but should you want to pop into our online ‘humbug’ fest this December, you would be very welcome and I promise you won’t hear a Christmas carol, or be told ‘to cheer up it’s Christmas’. Visit theolliefoundation.org/calendar to book your free place. And for everyone else, can I wish you all very good health, good company and a safe and happy new year. Enjoy every moment, because each and every one of them is a gift.

Q What inspired you to
launch Arkley Fine Art?
A Art for us started as a passion, which
then grew into a career. Our own gallery has always been the dream. For us it is the greatest job in the world. We love being able to transform people’s homes from being something special to something incredible. It was also very important to us to make original artwork accessible to everyone and change the perception that galleries can sometimes have. Q Why open in Hitchin? A Hitchin has always been a town we have
loved and admired. Full of independent businesses, it always has something going on. It has also been voted one of the best towns to live in the UK with some of the finest schools in the country. London is easily accessible making it a young, vibrant commuters’ town. They didn’t have any contemporary galleries locally, so we used this gap in the market to introduce Arkley. THE WORK OF GARETH TRISTAN EVANS
Q Today, what can we expect to
see in your gallery space?
A You can expect to see an eclectic display

of the best emerging artists that the industry has to offer. We are not your normal gallery, and we get a kick out of clients/prospective clients telling us how refreshing our gallery is and how it isn’t like most galleries conforming to being supplied by big publishers, resulting in the majority of stock being limited edition prints. We pride ourselves on displaying incredible original artwork that isn’t accessible in most galleries.
Husband and wife team, Richard and Danielle Barry, reflect on the origins of their gallery Arkley Fine Art and why Christmas is a really special time there
to newcomers to buying art as well as the expert collectors? A Always, this was our main goal. We fully vet and research each of our artists for originality, invest-ability and also their ambition. For our clients, our only advice for which piece to buy is the one you love. We have 0% finance options to make buying artwork from recognised names more affordable.
Q Do you aim to be accessible

Q Why did you introduce the
Home Approval Service?
A Artwork looks different in a gallery space
than it will in your home. Different lighting and décor will play a major part in this. The home approval service allows you to see the artwork in situ so you can make a properly informed decision. We also have an in-house photography team who can superimpose works digitally onto your wall for clients who are further afield. Q How do you decide on which
artists to work with?
A This is probably the hardest, but the
most enjoyable part to our job. We are a mid-tier gallery that specialize in emerging artists. This means the artists we work with are all successful and working full time in this career, but they are yet to establish a secondary art market for their work selling through the likes of Christie’s and Sotheby’s. We chose this field as it is not only more affordable, but also the greatest opportunity for growth. The artists we take on have to show originality in their work as well as have the ambition to drive their vision forward and build a solid collector base. AND WOT - EYE HEART AUDREY VANDAL

“WE LOVE BEING ABLE TO TRANSFORM PEOPLE'S HOMES FROM BEING SOMETHING SPECIAL TO SOMETHING INCREDIBLE” Q If possible, could you pick out
three artists that are really pushing the boundaries right now? A Lhouette – our biggest selling artist and one of the most creative talents that we have. He is always striving to come up with something new and will never compromise on the quality of his work. And Wot – he is an old school street artist that made the transition into fine art four years ago when we opened our doors. It has been incredible to see his career grow and the price of his work increase along with it. Recently at the Affordable Art Fair in Battersea he was our biggest selling artist, which is always a good sign for future prospects. Eelco Maan – we are so proud to have this incredible talent on our portfolio. He is from the Netherlands and works with only a handful of galleries. He is the epitome of a true artist.

C H R I STM A S Mind ambassador, and Hertfordshire local, Anna Williamson on how an emotional breakdown led to a successful career about turn By MARK KEBBLE
E
arly in my journalistic career, I crossed paths with Anna Williamson, then a children’s TV presenter. It was a prerequisite of the job that she had to have an infectious, bubbly personality and I was certainly bowled over by her fun-loving attitude. While my career has followed a standard path, Williamson’s went off in a completely different direction when anxiety issues took over her life. “When I was diagnosed with GAD (Generalised Anxiety Disorder), it was actually a huge relief,” she takes up the story. “I had been struggling for many months and then suffered an emotional breakdown in my mid-20s as a result of not recognising what was wrong or asking for help. When I finally did, everything started to gradually get better.” Fast forward to today and it’s incredible how far the Hertfordshire local has come. She is now a qualified counsellor, life coach and NLP practitioner, a successful
author and podcast host, TV presenter extraordinaire and an ambassador for the charity Mind. “It’s such an incredible charity,” she smiles. “In fact they are an absolute game changer when it comes to giving mental health the platform it needs for awareness and destigmatising. I became an ambassador well over ten years ago when mental health had much more of a stigma surrounding it, and I am so proud of the work they have done and continue to do to chip away at this.” Although Christmas is a time of great joy for many, the work of Mind and the support they offer is valuable during this period. “Very much so,” Williamson agrees. “The festive period is a time of excitement for many, but equally there are many others who struggle with this time of year. It’s important they know that there is help and support out there should they need it.” Williamson is certainly doing her part in helping people to understand it’s OK to ask for help. Back in 2017, her book Breaking Mad was published and became an instant
best-seller. “I wanted to write the book I wished I could have read when I needed it most,” she says on its origins. “When I was feeling anxious and in the middle of a horrible emotional breakdown, I couldn’t find anything that I could relate to, and when you are emotionally broken you don’t have the mental or physical strength or capacity to read massive chunks of literature. I certainly didn’t expect my book to go straight in as Amazon number one best-seller, knocking Mary Berry’s latest cookbook off the top of the charts!” It’s not just writing where Williamson has tapped into all that she has learnt during from her work as a life coach and counsellor. When we speak, she is busy filming the latest series of Celebs Go Dating, which has been a huge hit for Channel 4 and does exactly what it says on the tin, with Williamson offering a guiding hand from her presenting role. “It’s everything I have trained for,” she says on the initial attraction – no pun intended – to the show. “I have been on TV for 20 years, A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

and 12 years working in talking therapies, so for the two to come together as they have on this incredible show was a dream come true. This is my third year at the helm of the [celebrity dating] agency, my sixth series so far, and it honestly just gets better and better each time.” Also a match made in heaven is her podcast partnership with another Hertfordshire local, Luisa Zissman, with the duo behind the perfectly titled LuAnna. “It came about by pure chance,” Williamson says. “Luisa is my amazing friend and work wife, and we just felt like giving it a crack and showcasing our chalk and cheese relationship and friendship. We never expected it to be so popular or for it to even work, but somehow it does, and we are very grateful that people tune in every week for our nonsense. We wanted to show that you can be incredible friends with somebody where you also have differing opinions. The world has become so offended, we believe, so wanted to remind people that it’s totally OK to have a disagreement with your pal and to still actually like them!” It seems as if plenty agree, so much so the two are heading out on tour in 2022. “We have 14 dates across the country, which have sold out,” Williamson says almost
“From something so rubbish, has come something so wonderfully positive”

Picture the scene disbelievingly. “We are so grateful to our brilliant fans who are all as equally as crazy and disgusting as we are. It’s going to be the usual fun and frolics you get from our podcast, but in a live setting. We can’t wait.” It’s amazing how much has come from such a dark period for Williamson. “Training in talking therapies has been life changing for me,” she nods. “Not just personally, but professionally. It is hands down one of the most rewarding, humbling and important things I have ever done and continue to do. My lasting legacy will always be campaigning for more mental health equality and understanding and help. From something so rubbish, has come something so wonderfully positive.” Anna Williamson is a TV presenter, relationship expert and life coach (@annawilliamsonofficial)

W H Y H E RT F O R D S H I R E I S A N NA W I L L I A M S ON ’ S H A P P Y P L AC E Where do you live in Hertfordshire and what do you love about it? My husband and I and our children live in rural Hertfordshire, and it is my happy place, my tonic, and where I go to keep mentally well and happy. There is nothing better than open space, trees, and the smell of manure! Does the area come alive at Christmas? I basically live in the Vicar of Dibley, it’s everything and more when it comes to the festivities! Can you name your three favourite places? My three favourite places are very hard to narrow down, but they are: 1: My parents’ home. It’s my family home where I was brought up and it’s the family Mecca. I love it more than anything. It’s not just bricks and mortar, it’s the soul of my entire family and full of love and memories. 2: Our local Japanese - we have the most incredible Japanese restaurant near us, which has become a bit of a tradition to visit on our wedding anniversary and we’re often getting takeaways. 3: My gym. I know that sounds weird, but we go to a gym which has a lovely health spa, so I just adore some me time after a workout using the sauna and steam room, and maybe a cheeky massage!

Q During the various lockdowns we have experienced since early 2020, were you busy working on Hertford Theatre’s Growth & Legacy Project behind the scenes? Q What kind of things does the project include? A In the plans for the project is the addition of a first floor, which will house three new, full-time cinema screens, which means first release film is coming to Hertford. We’ll also gain an upstairs bar and new dance studio along with balcony seating in our main auditorium, increasing the capacity from 408 to 550. Downstairs we’ll also have a new studio theatre for around 150 people, which is really exciting, and an improved kitchen café, as well as rooms for hire for our community. Outside, we’ll be opening up our river frontage with a new walkway and improving access to the historical motte, which is just behind us. Q Was it still tough to close your doors to the public? A Closing our doors was really tough. On a daily basis, we were a hub for so many people, whether that was popping in for a chat over a coffee, meeting up with other mums in those first early months with a new-born or attending a dementia-friendly screening – closing our doors meant our community was without us. But, we had so many lovely messages of support, we decided to start #HugHertfordTheatre and we covered our windows in audience photos of happy times at the theatre, letters, poems and drawings. We’ve put them all online now, so do visit our website.

AN ARTIST IMPRESSION OF THE NEW HERTFORD THEATRE BUILDING
Q You’re still collaborating on a Christmas show this year. What can we expect from Under The Frozen Moon? A Under The Frozen Moon is a lovely folktale live show by award-winning Half A String theatre company and we’re so excited to be able to bring something to local families this Christmas [the show will be on at Southern Maltings]. You can expect an immersive, theatrical frozen-folktale as we’re bringing the world of Lunavik, where the show is set, to life throughout the building. It’s going to be great and something really unique. Q How long have you lived in Ware and what do you love most about it? A I have lived in Ware since Christmas 2019, so the majority of my time here has been under the cloud of COVID-19. I grew up in Hertford though and have family all over locally, so I already knew Ware well and, actually, I was secretly pleased to have that extra time and excuse in lockdown to go out walking every day and getting to know our neighbours. I think under “normal” circumstances that wouldn’t have happened. Q Are there any places that truly come
alive in the area at Christmas? A Van Hage is always worth a visit at Christmas. It’s an entirely nostalgic visit SUGAR & SCOOP IS REFILL HEAVEN
FANCY LEARNING AERIAL YOGA?
“Closing our doors was really tough. We are a hub for so many people” for me too – all those lovely visits to Father Christmas and the ice rink as a child! A walk along Ware High Street to see the famous lantern lights is a really festive way to spend an evening, ending up in one of the many pubs for a mulled wine perhaps, and I’m looking forward to the Christmas Tree Festival at Leaside Church too. Q Can you pick out your three favourite local places? A That’s really hard! But my go-to places in Ware are Sugar & Scoop for all my refill needs. They opened during lockdown and everyone loves them! Bridget’s Tea Room by ASL in Ware Priory grounds is a great place to meet friends or colleagues when I’m working from home and they have delicious vegan savoury snacks. For the last six years, Studio Fly is where I’ve spent most of my evenings, learning aerial and now I’m an instructor there too, teaching aerial yoga. With so many classes for all abilities and interests, it’s the best place to keep you strong, fit and happy. Q What does Hertford Theatre have planned for 2022? A Hertford Theatre has a long list of activity planned for 2022, some of it to do
CHRISTMAS TREE INSPIRATION IS HEADING TO LEASIDE CHURCH
with our Growth & Legacy Development, but we also know how important it is to keep bringing fantastic entertainment and opportunity to engage with the arts for all ages to the local area. We were awarded funding from Royal Opera House Bridge Project to consult with local schools with our Associate Artist Stuart Mullins, discovering how we can help improve the well-being of children and young people in a post-pandemic world. It’s been really interesting to hear what issues our schools are facing and how the arts can play an integral part in addressing some of these issues. We’ll be “popping” up at various locations throughout the year, collaborating and working towards reopening, which is really exciting. EXTRAORDINARY THINGS TO SEE & EXPERIENCE
In keeping with its sustainable ethos, King’s Cross has tasked the creative light and structural specialists This is Loop to reimagine the core structure of the 2020 tree to create an immersive, 28 feet infinity style tree entitled Prism. The Prism tree has been designed to signify unity and strength and to give visitors the feeling of being ‘connected’ in light.
EXTRAORDINARY GOODS & SHOPPING
KING'S CROSS IS A HIVE OF ACTIVITY
K I N G ' S C RO S S T h e h o m e o f e x t r a o r d i n a r y Get ready for a Christmas to remember at London’s number one hotspot for shopping, eating, drinking and socialising
G
etting ready to really celebrate this Christmas, King’s Cross – London’s vibrant and creative neighbourhood – has launched its sevenweek programme of extraordinary things to do, see, eat, drink and shop this festive season. Coal Drops Yard has transformed into the home of extraordinary, a fun-packed playground for everyone.
EXTRAORDINARY THINGS TO DO
A striking winter curling rink will take centre stage – Club Curling – which takes its name from the clubland culture of Coal Drops Yard’s colourful history, where up to four ‘curlers’ can team up to play a round of curling across six sustainable lanes.
There is nothing like a King’s Cross Christmas packed to the rafters with stores full of unique gift ideas, which are anything but ordinary. From terrarium kits at Botanical Boys and cashmere goodies at COS; to delightful children’s stocking fillers from Cissy Wears; incredible underwear from Beija London in an array of fluorescent colours; denim care kits from Blackhorse Lane; decadent copper wine decanters from Wolf & Badger and tank low ball glasses to match from Tom Dixon; state of the art kitchen knives and accessories from Kitchen Provisions; exquisite one-of-a-kind vintage finds at Shelter and many more.
EXTRAORDINARY THINGS TO EAT & DRINK
King’s Cross is the home of extraordinary food and drink, and this Christmas packs even more festive punch. From Vinoteca’s trio of wines to complement your Christmas a la carte menu, to Longboy’s trio of festive doughnuts, they’ve got your Christmas cravings covered. Feast on award-winning tapas in a private dining room for up to 24 guests at Barrafina, or visit the critically acclaimed terrace bar and grill restaurant, Parrillan, where you can cook choice portions of meat, seafood and vegetables in the refreshing winter air, whilst keeping cosy under blankets and heaters. Everyone’s favourite Indian restaurant, Dishoom, will be offering lavish Christmas feasts to tantalise your taste buds. Or maybe you are looking to get into the Christmas spirit a little earlier in the day? Expect undertones of ginger, maple syrup, candied orange and mulling spice in Caravan’s festive coffee blend. Even better – enjoy your morning sip guilt-free, knowing you are supporting women coffee producers, as well as the planet because 1% of Caravan’s profits will be donated to environmental causes. HAPPY DAYS
ST ALBANS POSTBOXES
Three KINGS
Absolutely casts the spotlight on the local charities who stand tall with their amazing work – but they need your help
C
haritable causes are important all-year round, but at Christmas the spotlight really shines on the great work that they do. Hertfordshire boasts many great organisations who are doing amazing things, so in this special section where we have suggested some great gifts to buy, perhaps there is something else you can spend your money on this Christmas.
ST ALBANS POSTBOXES
The much-loved St Albans Postboxes trail returns this Christmas with a whopping 82 postboxes being ‘topped’ with hand crocheted and knitted designs. Founded by locals Clare Suttie and Candy Stuart in 2018, the trail is one of the biggest fundraising initiatives in St Albans that has raised over £64,000 for local charities. Suttie says: “The great thing about St Albans Postboxes is that it brings together the whole community – businesses sponsoring, individuals donating, local charities benefitting – bringing a smile to every face. This year sees a record number of toppers, a bigger team of volunteers and we can't wait to see
everyone out and about finding them all.” Every topper has a QR code, which allows people to enter the trail and donate. What’s more, once people have the App, they can scan each barcode for a chance to win fantastic prizes that have been donated by local businesses. This year’s charitable partners are Youth Talk, which provides free, confidential counselling to 13-25-yearolds in St Albans and surrounding areas, and Hertfordshire based charity ADDvance, which supports families affected by ADHD, autism or a related condition.
HAPPY DAYS CHILDREN'S CHARITY
Based in Hitchin, Happy Days Children's Charity arrange special days such as trips to theatres, zoos, museums, outdoor activity centres, sporting events and other fun activities for children right across the UK living with mental, physical and emotional challenges. Every year, they support almost 25,000 children with additional needs by removing barriers, giving them a chance to get out, make new friends, develop new skills and build confidence in the face of adversity. Every year, their Operation Secret Santa campaign helps thousands of brave
children enjoy a really special panto or activity day, helping them to escape isolation and have some fun – but they need your support to make this happen. Visit happydayscharity.org or call Rob or Nicky on 01462 530710 to chat more about their vital work in Hertfordshire and beyond
ESSEX & HERTS AIR AMBULANCE
Essex & Herts Air Ambulance (EHAAT) works side-by-side with publicly funded ‘blue light’ services such as the police, fire and ambulance services. Yet unlike them, EHAAT is a charity which receives little direct funding from central government and none from the National Lottery. It costs over £750,000 every month to keep the service operational. This would not be possible without the generosity and goodwill of the people and businesses of Essex, Hertfordshire and the surrounding areas. Emma Barker, Head of Income Generation for EHAAT, says: “There are many different ways people can get involved and support their local life-saving charity. From volunteering their time, playing our lottery or entering one of our raffles, giving a regular donation or leaving a gift in their Will, through to taking part in one of our treks, running or extremely popular motorcycle events or hosting an afternoon tea, there is something for everyone.” Visit ehaat.org to see more ways of how to get involved and to make a donation A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

SOMETHING SPECIAL RARE CHAMPAGNE
True to the Rare Champagne signature, Rare Millésime 2008 holds unlimited potential for growth, youth and complexity. Rare Millésime 2008 imparts the fervour of an infinite spring. This Champagne is a crystal-clear, light gold in colour. The initial nose shines with the pure vivacity of this vintage, showing pronounced aromas of orange blossom, hyacinth and white flowers, with notes of just-ripe Williams pear, fresh coconut, almond, and tangerine. Saline and smoky hints balance the nose perfectly. The palate is crisp and precise, with citrus and tropical fruit lingering on the long, complex finish. rare-champagne.com

Sweet truth YVETTE'S CHOCOLATES
Absolutely Hertfordshire has known this for some time, but Yvette's Chocolates' Gooey Brownies have received national recognition, coming highly commended in the Great British Food Awards. As a rising small business, this is big news. After making the national shortlist, Flora Shedden deemed their Gooey Chocolate Brownies worthy of an award. A high praise from the ARAN Bakery owner and even more reason to celebrate this Christmas period. yvetteschocolates.com
We’ve also waited long enough for a proper NYE party, and now Sopwell House's stylish setting is ready for the biggest night of the last two years. t’s well documented how the hospitality industry has been ravaged by the pandemic – and the repercussions are still being felt – but in the short lifespan of Absolutely Hertfordshire, Farr Brew has been one local business that has seemingly bucked the trend to thrive. “Before the pandemic we were a very fluid business,” says joint owner, Nick Farr. “We had changed the profile from being a micro-brewery to being a boutique pub group in a very short space of time, which meant that we were in a relatively good position to pivot our business offering to handle the pandemic. While some pubs didn’t do much at all, we decided to provide a service to the communities that our pubs are part of – we delivered food and we opened up as bottle shops too.” It’s indicative of the forward-thinking approach that has been behind Farr Brew since day one. Farr himself went from making his own wine to brewing beer, brought his friend Matt Elvidge on board (now joint owner of Farr Brew), and started popping up at markets in and around St Albans, before award wins inspired them to set up their own brewery. Soon enough the opportunity to take the lease on their first pub, The Reading Rooms, came up and the rest is history. Today Farr Brew run seven pubs, with all but one being located in Hertfordshire.
NICK FARR
SOME FESTIVE TIPPLES
“This is our first Christmas as a microbrewery and pub group” “Both Matt and I have lived in Hertfordshire for many years, so it made sense to start Farr Brew here,” Farr says. “There is also a strong passion for real ale among the residents of the county who also love to get behind an independent business. Before we opened our first pub, we travelled across the county, taking Farr Brew to festivals, events and markets, of which there are many. These experiences made us realise how much goes on in the county and the opportunities this could bring. And, of course, there are lots of pubs in the county. St Albans was once said to be the pub capital of the UK, and CAMRA has its HQ in St Albans, which just goes to show how much of a real ale-loving county Hertfordshire is.” All of their venues are community pubs with history, but each definitely has a different tale to tell. “The Red Cow is a gastro pub with a focus on modern dining,” Farr says, “whereas the 13th century Eight Bells in Old Hatfield is our literary, historical pub. It appears in Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist as a ‘small publichouse’ that Bill Sikes calls in at for a drink after he has murdered Nancy. Dickens was said to have stayed in the Eight Bells on 27 December, 1838. Also, Dick Turpin was alleged to have popped in for a pint or two and was even purported to have climbed out of the upstairs windows when being chased by the authorities.
We have just embarked on a £250,000 refurbishment of the Eight Bells that will be sympathetic to this already fantastic building and it will reopen on 10 December. “Then Elephant and Castle is our flagship pub,” he continues about their Wheathampstead venue. “When we took it over – two weeks before lockdown – it was a pub with potential, but had not been realised. Since we started running it, we have tripled turnover, created a great outdoor space with tipis, marquees and play areas for kids, and a really strong food offering.” Their Christmas plans suggest they are making up for lost time after last year’s wash out. “Our Christmas menus launched on 15 November: the Elephant and Castle, the Red Cow and The Bull will have festive menus,” Farr explains. “The Reading Rooms and the Elephant and Castle are also holding wreath-making classes, and we will have bands at all our pubs on New Year’s Eve. This is our first Christmas as a microbrewery and pub group, so it’s going to be an interesting and busy one.” With no time off over Christmas expected, you’d forgive Nick Farr for taking it easy in January, but as he says there are plans for further pub acquisitions. “We don’t rest on our laurels at Farr Brew,” he states. We will raise a pint to that. Discover more by visiting farrbrew.com

Leftover turkey and ham pie Serves 6
There is no better way to celebrate Christmas leftovers than with a creamy pie with a thick, crumbly pastry – and we believe that a homemade herbed, buttery shortcrust pastry is the best of all pastries to use. Serve warm with buttered cabbage and grain mustard.
INGREDIENTS To make the pastry •2 75g plain flour • 1 30g butter, cubed • 1 tbsp thyme leaves, roughly chopped • 1 egg yolk, beaten • 1 egg beaten with 2 tablespoons of milk • s alt and pepper For the filling: • 1 medium leek, halved lengthways and roughly chopped • 1 celery stick, roughly chopped • 6 shallots, peeled and quartered • 2 tsp olive oil or butter • 250g mushrooms, roughly chopped • 1 tbsp thyme leaves, roughly chopped • 100ml white wine • 400g leftover turkey (brown and white meat), shredded or cut into 2cm pieces • 150g leftover ham, cut into 2cm cubes For the white sauce • 50ml butter • 50g plain flour • 550ml milk • 2 bay leaves
METHOD Preheat the oven to 180°C. Begin by making the pastry. Sift the flour into a bowl and add the butter, thyme, a generous pinch of salt and a good twist of black pepper. Rub the mixture together with your fingertips until it resembles coarse breadcrumbs. Add the egg yolk and stir together until a smooth dough begins to form – if the dough looks too dry and crumbly, add a tablespoon of water at a time until it comes together. Shape into a round, wrap in greaseproof paper and rest in the fridge until ready to use. 3 Place a large pan over a medium heat and add the leek, celery, shallot and oil or butter. Lightly season with salt and pepper and sauté for 3-4 minutes until the vegetables begin 1
2
to soften. Increase the heat a little and add the mushrooms and thyme, stirring for a further 3-4 minutes until the mushrooms start to brown. Add the wine and continue to cook until the liquid has reduced by about a half. Transfer the mixture to a pie or casserole dish and stir through the cooked turkey and ham. 4 Return the pan to the heat and melt the butter for the white sauce before whisking through the flour. Whisk over the heat for a minute or so before gradually adding the milk, whisking all the time to avoid any lumps forming. When all of the milk has been incorporated, add the bay leaves, season generously and continue to whisk over the heat until a lovely, thick sauce forms. Remove and discard the bay leaves and pour the white sauce over the turkey ham and leek mixture and stir together, being sure to check the seasoning once more. 5 Lightly flour a cool, clean work surface and roll out the pastry, turning regularly as you roll it into a shape that will neatly fit your dish. Roll until it is about 0.5cm thick, then gently lift it and place it over your dish. Press it into the edges of the dish before removing any excess. Re-roll the excess and cut into shapes of your choice – leaves, stars, crosses or hearts. Arrange the shapes over the top of the pastry and brush all over with the egg wash (the egg and milk mixture). Bake the pie for 25-35 minutes until the top is golden and the pastry is cooked through. 6 Serve warm with wilted seasonal greens, grain mustard and a creamy mash.
Quinoa & lentil salad
with shredded turkey, raw sprout, toasted wild rice, cranberries & pistachios Serves 8
INGREDIENTS For the salad • 1 00g wild rice • 2 tbsp olive oil • 2 tsp nigella seeds • 1 tsp yellow mustard seeds
• 1 tsp cumin seeds • 400ml water • 100g quinoa • 80g lentil verts (or puy) • 300g sprouts, finely shredded • 350g cooked turkey, shredded • 30g parsley, finely chopped • 100g pistachios, toasted • natural or coconut yoghurt, to serve For the dressing • 3 tbsp olive oil • 1 onion, finely sliced • 120g cranberries • 4 tbsp pomegranate molasses • 8 tbsp white wine vinegar • 75ml water
METHOD 1 Bring a pan of salted water to the boil and add the wild rice. Simmer gently for 25-30 minutes until tender. Drain and allow to cool. 2 Heat the olive oil in a saucepan and add the spices. Fry for 2 minutes until the spices begin to pop and then stir in the quinoa and lentils. Continue to fry for 3-5 minutes, stirring continuously until the spices and grains are aromatic and toasted. 3 Pour in the water, stir well and bring to the boil. Cover with a lid and simmer gently for 18-20 minutes until the water has been absorbed and the grains are tender. 4 To make the dressing, heat the olive oil in a shallow pan and add the onion. Cook gently for 8-10 minutes until the onion is soft and slightly golden. Add the cranberries, followed by the pomegranate molasses, vinegar and water. Simmer gently for 10 minutes until syrupy. 5 Combine the grains, sprouts, turkey, parsley, pistachios and dressing, and plenty of salt and pepper, in a large bowl and stir well. Add a little more olive oil if needed and a generous squeeze of lemon juice. Finally, serve with a drizzle of organic yoghurt.

Ginger millionaire slice Makes 25-30 small bites
With a thick, lightly salted date caramel and a textured nutty base of almonds and ginger biscuits, this ginger millionaire slice is the perfect festive treat to have with a cup of tea or an ideal homemade gift when presented in a box or brown paper bag tied with string.
INGREDIENTS To make the base • 250g ginger biscuits, crushed • 240g skinned almonds, roughly chopped
• 50g shelled pistachios • 50g candied ginger • grated zest of 1 orange • 200g unsalted butter, melted To make the caramel • 250g pitted Medjool dates • 100g smooth almond butter • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 1 tsp ground ginger • pinch of ground cloves • 1/4 tsp sea salt • 100g unsalted butter To make the topping • 250g dark chocolate
METHOD 1 For the base, pulse the ginger biscuits in a food processor to small chunks. Add the remaining ingredients and lightly pulse until incorporated. 2 Grease and line a brownie tin with baking parchment and
pour in the mixture. Spread it around the tray and press into the edges until even and smooth, then place in the fridge to set. 3 Place all of the ingredients for the caramel in a high-speed blender and blend until you have a thick, smooth paste. 4 Remove the tray from the fridge and spread over your layer of caramel, using a palette knife dipped in hot water to smooth the top, returning the tray to the fridge once more. 5 Melt the chocolate by placing it in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water (do not allow the base of the bowl to touch the water). Pour the melted chocolate over the caramel and return the tray to the fridge to set for 1-2 hours. 6 Once set, cut into neat slices or chunks to serve or gift. daylesford.com

e love a cocktail at any time of year, but at Christmas we favour simple cocktails that can either be batch made in advance or very easily served on demand,” says Kate Marston, co-founder of Hertfordshire’s Puddingstone Distillery. “Everyone is busy during the festive season, so our recipes will impress your guests and make your mixology skills look effortless.” Back in January 2019 the team at Puddingstone won the World’s Best Martini Challenge using their Campfire London Dry Gin. During the competition Ben, Kate’s husband and distillery co-founder, presented their bone dry martini recipe to three spirit industry judges and served it up to the public at an evening event in a London Soho bar. Given the calibre of competing gin distilleries, Ben and Kate were delighted to be crowned winners. The competition returns in 2022 where they will be defending their title. Look out for martini events at the distillery in the run up to the competition. Here we share their recipe, which can be batch made and kept in the fridge until ready to serve in chilled martini glasses. Another of Puddingstone Distillery’s Christmas gin cocktails is the White Herts. It is their variation on a White Russian, where they switch vodka for the distillery’s PUD PUD Cherry Gin. You can pre-mix the gin and Kahlua if you wish and add the ice and cream just when you’re ready to serve.
C A M P F I R E B ON E DRY M A RT I N I – 75ml Campfire London Dry Gin – 7.5ml Dolin Dry Vermouth – Orange peel garnish soaked in Carpano Antica Formula sweet red vermouth for 10 hours or more – Ice • Using a cocktail mixing glass or shaker combine the gin and vermouth with ice and stir. You are aiming for dilution of approx. 20ml of water. • Serve in a pre-chilled martini glass and garnish with the orange peel flowers.
W H I T E H E RT S – 45ml PUD PUD Cherry Gin – 15ml Kahlua – 30ml Double cream – Ice • Add ice, PUD PUD Cherry Gin and Kahlua to a stemless gin glass and stir. • Pour the cream over the back of a spoon and float it gently over the spirits mix. Alternatively pour the cream in and stir to combine all the ingredients. FASHION • EVENT THE EVENT WAS HELD AT ST ALBANS CATHEDRAL
Worth the WAIT
Donna Nichol of Chloe James Lifestyle takes us behind the scenes of their anniversary fashion show at St Albans Cathedral
W
e have been putting on fashion shows twice a year for some time now, but they are normally held in a local restaurant and seat around 80 people. They regularly sell out way in advance and very often within 24 hours of the ticket release. With our tenth birthday looming I really wanted to do something special to celebrate a decade on the high street, so I started thinking of ways to put on an event that was reflective of our achievements. By the time we actually came to host the event it had been postponed three times due to the pandemic – and we were actually 11 and a half years old! It felt incredible to be in such beautiful surroundings with a wonderful audience who were really excited to be out. The good vibes were palpable. To me, the cathedral is the beating heart of St Albans. It’s the thing that signifies home to me when I spy it in the distance when I’m coming back from somewhere. The building is absolutely beautiful and I feel truly honoured to have been able to put on our 10th Birthday Fashion Show in its stunning South Transept. Over 220 guests attended, including Alison Lowe MBE and Dan Whytock, CEO of Down Your High Street. Fifty front row ticket holders were treated to a limited edition Chloe James Lifestyle tote bag with gorgeous gifts inside from Black Colour DK, Estella Bartlett and Whiteleaf jewellery. We had 12 models, aged from their 20s to 50s, size 8 to 16 and all different body shapes, showcasing 84 outfits going from casual to party. Whilst I want the models to look stunning, I also want the audience to be able to identify with them and maybe

think “wow, that looks great on her and she’s my age/body shape”. I want to push the fact that fashion and style is for everyone. I will probably do our regular spring/ summer and autumn/winter events next year, where we hold the catwalk show in a local venue, but the guests come back to the shop afterwards. Saying that, the cathedral event was fantastic and, of course, once you’ve done it once it gets easier. I am delighted to say we also raised £1,430 for St Albans Action For Homeless. chloejameslifestyle.co.uk

Q&A
JEWEL OF St Alban s
Sarah Gillow, creative director of Galio, discusses three decades in business, supporting local retailers and creating something to cherish By MARK KEBBLE
“St Albans is an amazing town, a real combination of ancient and modern”
Q You are fast approaching your 30th
SARAH AND DAVID GILLOW
anniversary, which comes around in 2022 – but looking back, what originally inspired you to launch Galio? A The jewellery available at the time was very traditional. We felt that there was nowhere that anyone could find special and different design-led pieces. We were making them and trying to find retailers brave enough to take them, but no-one did. Galio was the first of its type in the UK – a space that celebrated contemporary fine jewellery design. Q That aside, what else did you offer that made you different from other jewellery shops from day one? A We worked with innovative artisans both from the UK and further afield. We displayed their jewellery creatively in a space that was welcoming. You knew you could find something different on a visit to Galio. Indeed David, my husband and co-owner, won an award for retail innovation in the very first year that we opened.

FASHION • Q&A
Q How would you say you have evolved in three decades? A Our bespoke jewellery has become more and more important to us. We love getting to know clients and their stories and creating the perfect piece for them. Many people return to us again and again. We have been here a while now and we are even seeing their children come into the store, which is such a joy and a privilege. Our product range has developed and now includes fine quality watches that offer something different from the norm. One of our watch brands, Bremont, developed their own automatic watch movement, made in England. It’s the first movement manufactured here since the 70s, which is a real feat! The space has expanded giving us more room and we now are home to more UK designers, a large proportion of our jewellery is designed in the UK, much of it is made here. We have reinvented ourselves with beautiful seating areas and even a courtyard garden that we use for consultations whenever the weather allows.
Q How important do you think it is for us all to shop local this year? A So incredibly important! The high street is the lifeblood of the city centre. If you can find what you want from an independent local source your business will mean so much to the very real people running it. Without your readers shopping local, businesses will close. We all hear laments about the great British High Street, but the message really is: use or lose it.
Q Why did you originally open in St Albans? A Even then it was an amazing town, a real combination of ancient and modern. Inspirational. George Street is the epitome of this – when a shop came up we were so keen to make it happen. The residents were also very welcoming. We really felt part of the community. Q Did you get a sense of the St Albans community coming together during the various lockdowns? A Absolutely, yes! The community feels closer than ever. The businesses have pulled together like never before, helped by our local BID, which has given us a conduit to lobby local government, communicate with each other and the community as a whole.
Q What are the hot jewellery brands right now? A We concentrate mainly on design-led fine jewellery and diamonds, but run small designer brands through our silver jewellery offer. Currently we have had a great reaction to Uno de 50 from Spain and Shaun Leane, who is one of the greatest British designers we have. He was one of the All that Glitters presenters – his work is stunning, seen on all the A-listers. And on top of that he’s a really nice person!
Q What plans do you have in place for your 30th anniversary next year? A We are very excited for next year! Thirty years is a real landmark – and actually makes us feel very grateful, to our customers and the people of St Albans without whom none of this would have been possible. We will, all things being equal, run a fundraiser to give back to the community that has supported us. In our 25th year we raised £22,000 for Rennie Grove; this time we will again be supporting local charities, all of which have seen very hard times in the last two years. Details are yet to be confirmed, but there will definitely be a big celebration!
Q How does your bespoke service work? A Bespoke work comes one of two ways.
Sometimes people have done a lot of research and know exactly what they want, but can’t find it anywhere – they have had inspiration and want someone to make it a reality. Other times they may have inherited something that’s not quite their taste and would like to re-invent it into something they would wear. Either way we sit down and have a chat with them. We listen to what they want and together we develop an idea into something wearable. We will use sketches and models to find the perfect thing. From the point a design is agreed it then takes about six weeks for our workshop to create the finished item.

s the world reawakens from lockdown, more and more people are taking time for self-care. Given the monotony and introspection of the last 18 months, feeling ready to face the world again has new-found importance. Specialists in laser aesthetics, The Cherrywood Clinic are expanding into new premises on Hoddesdon high street. They combine the clinical and the cosmetic with scientifically-proven treatments for hair removal, rosacea, thread veins, fungal nail infections, pigmented lesions, and skin tightening. Their new premises are modern, sleek, and discreet, going hand-in-hand with the clinical nature of their work without feeling foreboding. With 23 years of continuous operation across the Home Counties, their Clinical Director Rachel, says: “We will only ever provide laser treatments. We’ve never diluted our knowledge base with other treatments, because we believe this delivers the best results in the safest possible way.” Each client – of all skin types and genders - is treated as an individual. Rachel believes that the results can be transformative. “People underestimate the difference effective treatment can make. Some of our treatments change things that our clients have worried about for years. We’ve helped many clients who’ve been told they were unsuitable for laser treatment. There are some who’ve gained the confidence to leave the house without makeup, or who can’t believe that they finally don’t have to shave daily. We’re so lucky to be able to do that for people. Tears of joy are fairly common!”

“Party season really is the perfect time to launch your new look”
Christmas PRESENCE Embrace the festive season with an air of positivity – and a bold new look By TRISHA BULLER
T
he tinsel-covered rollercoaster that is Christmas is fast approaching and soon we’re going to be rushing through the twists and turns and the ups and downs of the busiest – some might say craziest – time of the year. It’s your choice. You can try to ignore the clatter, the chatter and the squeals of excitement, or you can jump on board and enjoy the ride. I know which ticket I’ll be buying. All aboard: next stop 2022. I’m convinced the secret of having a great Christmas – and a great life, for that matter – is to really live or “be in” each moment. Be present and try to squeeze every last drop of enjoyment juice out of even the sourest lemon. Okay, so the thought of peeling hundreds of spuds or stuffing the turkey might not make
your heart leap with joy, but it can be fun. Go on and try. It really is the greatest gift. Talking of gifts, why not treat yourself to a bold new look? It needn’t be expensive. A bright, luscious new lippy, a flash of glittery eye shadow or a handful of new statement hairpins in a classy, glamorous up-do can really get you into the Christmas spirit. If you’ve been thinking about really pushing the boat out with a dramatic new cut or colour, party season really is the perfect time to launch your new look. If you want to make a grand entrance or even be the centre of attention, a bold new hairstyle is guaranteed to get you noticed. So go on, seize the moment. Make a splash with those extensions you’ve always wondered about, give those big Hollywood curls a go or have the courage to get the sexy short cut you were always going to try one day. If you’re considering a hair makeover, come and talk to the stylists at Cienté. They’ll help you choose a style to achieve the look you want and give you hints and advice on keeping your hair in tip-top condition. Your Cienté stylists can also give you a few tips that will help with the Christmas shopping. Our friends at Joico, Unite, Philip Martin and GHD have put together some wonderful hair product gift sets that will take all the worry out of what to buy for even your most stylish friends. Each gift set comes beautifully packaged and contains shampoo, conditioner and/or finishing spray for creating voluminous, wavy or straight styles. And if you’re left with a few over after Boxing Day, well, I’m sure you deserve some more Christmas presents yourself. The lights will be twinkling up in the streets, as Christmas is hurtling towards us and the Cienté appointment book is filling up fast. If you want to look super stylish throughout the holiday season and right into the New Year, just book yourself a top Cienté stylist now. THE BIKE AND THE BUMP How Apex Rides can help support a smoother pregnancy

xercising as an expectant mum can sometimes be quite daunting, and knowing which exercise is safest for you and the baby can leave you feeling overwhelmed. The British at-home spin bike and app Apex Rides has launched a new pregnancy series to help. The series has been developed by instructors Carol-Ann de Venter and Sandy Martin, to help build up confidence, retain strength, and embrace positivity throughout pregnancy. The Apex Pregnancy series is a safe
and inclusive program developed and guided by experts, where each ride guides you through the modifications you can make when cycling in order to keep you and your baby safe. “I could not exercise other than short walks during my first trimester,” says de Venter. “I was so nauseous I could barely get out of bed, and many women experience the same in their first trimester. Second trimester most women feel much better and the bump isn't as much of an interference as it becomes later on, so this is most women's favourite time
to be active during pregnancy. My third trimester was amazing and when I had the most energy, so I really enjoyed spinning right up until my baby was born. Many women will get swelling and exhaustion towards the end of their third trimester and be put off by working out altogether, but staying active can really help.” What would she say are the key benefits of staying active whilst pregnant? “For a start it reduces stress and anxiety,” de Venter says. “It also improves sleep, builds strength, muscle tone, endurance and balance to support your changing body. Exercising reduces low back pain, bloating, and reduces the risk for pregnancy complication such as gestational diabetes.” All of which will mean less bumps in the road during your pregnancy. apexrides.com A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

hristmas is a time for family, which is rather apt when considering the latest collection from YARDART UK. ‘The Blazing Lord Hector’, ‘The Gullible Lord Percy Percy, Heir to the Duchy of Northumberland’ and ‘The Inimitable Godfather, Marlon’ may all sound like trendy ales or characters from Blackadder, but they are in fact the latest creations in the Heritage Animal range from YARDART UK. “This wonderful family tree in their vintage and ceremonial dress is always growing,” smiles Rebecca Lund. “We have incredible fun putting these together and creating the dynasty story behind them. Our customers love them.” The range is just one reason why YARDART UK, created by Lund and friend Charlotte Clemence, has taken off since launching two years ago. “We hit it off straight away,” Lund recalls of meeting her future business partner on the school run. “A coffee at Charlotte’s house and a chance to see her amazing art, I mentioned my own interest – resin fluid art – and we instantly knew that we could make something THEIR WORK IS INCREASINGLY BEING BOUGHT FOR THE INDOORS

work between us. With both of us loving the outdoors and spending time in our gardens, we noticed there was a gap in the market for outdoor art. After seeing how brilliant and robust the resin was, and the fact it was used for outdoor landscaping, we were convinced we could encase our prints so they could live outdoors.” After a period of trial and error, the company was born and quickly they built up a fanbase. “Most outdoor art on the market is produced on an outdoor canvas. It may make it appear more accessible cost-wise, but it also makes it lower quality and less robust to the elements,” Lund explains. “We ensure our printing is perfect, and the colours as vibrant as the original piece itself, making it a stand out artwork for the garden. “Our printing process means that everything, including the frame, is printed onto the blank acrylic canvas, making it completely waterproof, giving each piece a 3D effect,” she continues. “The frame image is so realistic and convincing; you’ll often find people having to touch it to understand it. It’s hard to get your head around the fact it is actually flat and only 5mm thick. By using outdoor grade architectural bolts that colour

match to the piece, we complete the 3D effect, as the art stands slightly proud of the wall. It also means that air flows around it, water stops being trapped and they are wind proof too. Essentially our art can live outside, hassle free, all year round and still look perfect.” How do the two come up with new pieces? “We look at interior and exterior trends, talk to our clients and also analyse what has sold,” Lund says. “Colour predictions, such as Colour of the Year, along with new palette colours from the likes of Farrow & Ball also have an influence. By talking to our artists, we discuss their motivations behind new ideas, and what they see as the next zeitgeist to capture people’s minds. Aside from that we do what we love, so even if it’s a bit leftfield we can never say no to an idea. “We love bringing new artists into the YARDART UK family,” Lund adds. “We collaborate with some wonderful industry leaders from street art companies and galleries. Their knowledge is incredible and has led to some wonderful limited edition pieces including Banksy’s Heart Boy and HEART BOY BY BANKSY: YARDART UK IN COLLABORATION WITH BRANDLER GALLERIES, FROM £2,300
THE CHRISTMAS COLLECTION IS HUGELY POPULAR
“Our Christmas collection is a mix of 3D effect wreaths and baubles to hang on gates, front doors and inside” Seasons Greetings in association with Brandler Galleries. The prints, which are numbered and come with a certificate of authenticity, were exhibited at Moments at Moyses Hall, Bury St Edmunds, during the summer. We have now started working on some Rachel List pieces, which is really exciting, for next year. She is a wonderful artist to keep an eye on, and who was thrown into the spotlight after her amazing NHS piece during the pandemic in 2020.” Also last year saw YARDART UK launch a Christmas collection, which – rejoice – returns in 2021 too. “It’s a mix of 3D effect wreaths and baubles to hang on gates, front doors and inside,” Lund says on what to expect. “We’ve also got the pastel pink trend covered as well as miniature versions of Heritage Animals. This time of year is when our bespoke offer becomes increasingly popular for Christmas presents, especially
for the garden lovers out there. We get a lot of family photos sent in, to digitally frame, so that a special someone can have their family portraits in their garden and courtyards. They are a fantastic idea, especially for the person that has everything.” Lund admits business is at present “relentless”, but luckily she has Hertfordshire’s beautiful landscape to help ease the strain. “I live near Bishops Stortford, on the canal,” she says. “I absolutely love it here and we have the canal in our back garden, so we can go out on the kayaks. Charlotte and I often have a business meeting out on the boats! It’s a beautiful place to bring up the children and we have the most spectacular walks around here too. Our local school is brilliant, we have such a sense of community here – I wouldn’t change it for anything.” Just as the Heritage Animal collection is all about a family tree, Lund says Christmas will be a time to spend close to her loved ones. “The plan is 100% about spending time with my family and switching off this Christmas,” she states. “We plan to stay at home, play games and eat a lot. I don’t want to miss my children growing up and my youngest is starting school next year, so these times are precious. It is very important to us to dial down before the welcomed mayhem starts again in early spring!” Rebecca Lund is co-director at YARDART UK – see more at yardartuk.co.uk and follow them on Instagram @yardart_uk A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

GEOGRAPHY
ALICE MOLLISON James Allen's Girls' School, Assistant Head, Head of Teaching & Learning and geography teacher. She studied at Edinburgh University and her favourite topic is glaciation. She was once snowed in while camping on Tien Shan glacier in Kazakhstan and is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.

We may have GPS, but the world still needs expert explorers, researchers, mappers, data gatherers and problem solvers. Two experts in the field give their elevator pitch – explaining why geography is so cool and where studying it can take you
VICTORIA BURTON St Edmund's Canterbury, Head of Geography. She studied for her degree at Newcastle University and is most fond of Physical Geography. She becomes "disproportionately excited" about glaciers and has a soft spot for the late health professor and data visualisation developer Hans Rosling.

GEOGRAPHY FAST FACTS What makes geography so brilliant? AM: The physical and human world of today is constantly changing. It is crucial for current and future generations to understand these trends and flows so that purposeful actions and decisions can be made. Geography is the subject that helps make sense of all aspects of the world. VB: Geography is everything that has gone before and everything that is to come. It unlocks secrets and solves puzzles. It makes you ask and answer questions, find patterns, identify problems, work solutions. With every news item – from questions of immigration to climate change to Covid patterns – geographers are quietly sitting in the background of every decision that matters. Who gets the aid, where to build that stadium, how to find those survivors? It is in all times and all places. What made you choose it? AM: I loved having the opportunity to study a really broad subject, which incorporated fields such as geology, ecology and economics. And the trips are, of course, always fun! VB: I like a map.

Transferable skills and knowledge acquired? AM: Geography helps you to develop excellent decision making and research skills, use statistics to make sense of data and use computers to collect, present and analyse information. You'll be studying global trade one day and the science of earthquakes the next. VB: Geographers are literate, numerate, computer skilled, team players, independent learners, researchers, analysts, scientists,
“Geographers are literate, numerate, computer skilled... and often look splendid in corduroy” problem solvers, creative thinkers and often look splendid in corduroy. What pathways does it open? AM: At A-level, its breadth means it complements any subject combination. Contemporary research and themes regularly filter down from universities and become part of geography at school, particularly in human geography. A huge range of doors will be opened with a geography degree, from being a geoscientist designing a wind farm, to working in finance or law, to marketing. I worked in advertising before training to be a teacher. VB: Far more than you might imagine. Very few of us are teachers. Most become urban designers, political analysts, peace negotiators, MPs (Prime Ministers!), economists, accountants, vulcanologists, software designers, vets, doctors, epidemiologists... Two things students might not realise geography covers... AM: Themes such as human rights and diversity help young people to further their understanding of issues at a local and global scale. VB: Piracy and Mars landings – geography is brilliant. A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

Why should you make a Will? The importance of making a Will cannot be overstated. A Will allows you to: •
Choose the persons you wish to administer your estate
•
Name persons you wish to benefit from your estate
•
Appoint guardians to take parental responsibility for children under 18
•
Express a wish and provide directions for burial and disposal of your body
•
Include tax planning provisions
•
Extend the powers of the Executors where necessary
•
Avoid unnecessary distress to your surviving relatives at a time when they have just suffered a loss
•
Obtain peace of mind that your estate is being distributed according to your wishes
An important consideration is the potential liability to pay Inheritance Tax. Inheritance Tax would not be payable where assets are left to a surviving spouse or civil partner but may be payable when the surviving spouse or civil partner dies. Neves can prepare a Will for you, having regard to your own individual circumstances and wishes and ensure that you have provided for your loved ones in a tax efficient manner. The Power of
Performance The headmaster of Haberdashers’ Boys’ School writes passionately about the importance of the creative arts
S
chool performances have always been an integral part of learning and development, and they are a huge part of a school’s culture. Preserving our children’s right to a full creative arts education is also vital in broadening their overall academic knowledge. As we near the festive season once more, having endured long term restrictions that have impacted on our children’s opportunity to perform in front of live audiences, it makes the promise of this year all the more special for our budding actors and musicians.

Creativity is the future. Our society, economy, and our planet need curious and creative minds to imagine and develop solutions to problems. We need to inspire young people to conjure and to tell better stories about who we are, what we might be and, ultimately, to build a better future for our world. Engaging in dramatic performance is a fantastic way for young people to find their voice and to explore the realms of creativity and expression to communicate and collaborate with their peers on different levels and outside of their comfort zone.
H E LPI N G TH E YO U N G TO F I N D TH E I R VO I C E Performing in front of others can improve self-esteem and self-worth, particularly for those who lack confidence or struggle academically in the classroom. Performance also encourages children to experiment with their voice and personal identity through role play. With no right or wrong answers, no instruction manuals or rigid templates, children can more readily ask what they themselves feel, and what they themselves believe. Not only does this kind of creativity depend upon independent thought and reflection, but it also helps to A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

foster a deeper sense of self and personal commitment. This is where the true power of performance really comes into its own because students must give all of themselves to succeed, and they can only do this if they spend some time both thinking and feeling for themselves. The outcome is just as important though, engaging in the creative arts through performance also invites us to hear the perspectives and voices of those around us as they too find their voices while fostering empathy and mutual understanding. It is no surprise that creative activity now plays such an interesting role in wellbeing and therapy. The world simply needs young people who can think and feel for themselves and having the opportunity to perform or act in front of peers or a live audience gives them the perfect backdrop. Creative arts subjects are of course hard work. Contrary to the misguided perception that creative subjects are somehow less demanding, the truth is, they require high levels of perseverance and persistence, alongside courage to take risks; they are gritty. The creative process is peppered with discarded ideas and failures, requiring reflection and response in order to improve and move

forward. This in turn requires high levels of self-organisation and self-motivation. The modern world, with all of its pressures and challenges, needs young people who can think on their feet, are resilient thinkers and who will persevere and prevail in the face of uncertainty and setbacks. Performance itself tends to encourage teamwork and interactions. Whether it be interwoven with music, dance or even improvisation, these techniques and disciplines are so often made better with others, building skills of communication and mutual respect, knowing that you are playing your part in a larger and more glorious whole. The same is true when participating in a dramatic production where every member of the cast, technical team, orchestra and backstage support are part of something much bigger than themselves. They all come together to create the winning performance. The world certainly needs this.
FO STE R I N G D R E AM S AN D I MAG I NATI O N Above all else, however, creative subjects like drama, music and arts invite students to dream and to imagine the world both as it is and the world as it might be, just as we did when we were very young, and before our schools and adolescence somehow banished this from our beings. As Sir Ken Robinson eloquently put it, “imagination is the source of every form of human achievement”.
ABS_HERTS_Dec21_EDU_PERFORMANCE_MK_v2.indd 106
“We want our young people to grow up with interests and enthusiasm” Alongside emotional literacy, this is the one big thing that AI (artificial intelligence) cannot replicate. Creative subjects nurture this intrinsically human attribute, and we desperately need young people with the capacity to imagine difference and the confidence and drive to pursue their visions. A final point is that education, like life, is meant to be rich, varied and fun. We want our young people to grow up with interests and enthusiasm, deriving joy from the wonderful ideas and creations of others, past and present. From art scholarships and music schemes, to playing instruments and performing to audiences, our young people need and deserve the freedom to express themselves if they are to enrich their lives for the better.
