Yorkshire YATTER

Lisa Byrne takes a whistlestop festive tour across our county, leaving just enough time to board the Polar Express

Did you know that worldfamous legends Robin Hood and King Arthur have direct connections to our wonderful county?

It’s believed that King Arthur was born in Barwick-in-Elmet near Leeds, while Robin Hood is said to have robbed the rich to give to the poor from the wilds of Barnsdale Forest. Sadly, though, Yorkshire doesn’t seem to have a direct connection to St Nicholas, also known as Father Christmas, but this hasn’t stopped the festive legend visiting our county copious times over the season.

In fact, the man himself has pledged to pay a flying visit to Castle Howard, which this year hosts an incredible fairy-tale experience called Into the Woods, which promises fair maidens and magic as well as Father Christmas holding court for good girls and boys in a Storytelling Grotto.

Hectic Santa will also be making an appearance at Stockeld Park by arriving

in a dazzling sleigh, pulled along by a fleet of his beloved reindeer for the annual Christmas Parade. The historic park’s Enchanted Forest Winter Illuminations – with its captivating soundscape and animated installations – are a must see.

The arts and crafts lover in me cannot wait to get creative and indulge in wreath making at English Heritage’s Brodsworth Hall in South Yorkshire. I’ve been tipped o that an elderly man in a red coat and white beard might also be around to o er a helping hand!

If you’re near the chocolate box city of York over Christmas, there’s nothing more magical than singing carols while sipping a goblet of Glühwein, perusing the unique gifts in the snug chalets of St Nicholas Fayre. While you’re in the city I would highly recommend immersing in a traditional Victorian Christmas at York’s Castle Museum, where you can relish the sights and sounds of days gone by.

This December, I’m also very excited to finally visit The Piece Hall in Halifax, which will be transformed into a winter wonderland with a beautiful vintage carousel and outdoor skating ring. The 80s legend Martin Kemp promises to entertain the crowd in the hugely popular and intimate performance space Speigeltent.

After an exhausting Christmas period, I will relish throwing on my PJs to take a trip on The Polar Express, which travels from Leeming Bar station to the North Pole, meeting characters from the enchanting film along the way.

Finally, I would like to wish all you lovely Absolutely Yorkshire readers a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

My highlights for the month of December…

Remembering the story of The Three Kings by inhaling the heady scent of my rose and frankincense reed diffuser by Richmond-based Kiss the Moon.

Keeping up my strength and vigour by taking the zinc and kelp infused Hair and Energy supplement by JSHealth.

Being more mindful and trying to keep the calorie levels low by ordering wine from Drinkwelluk.

HOT POTATO

York is really something special, I’ll end up retiring up there most certainly.

It’s a lovely part of the world,” Malton-born chef James Martin tells me when I ask him about life after stardom and whether he thinks he will choose to settle in the north or the south of the country.

The 50-year-old chef, who owns properties in Yorkshire and Hampshire, has been based predominantly in the south for over 30 years, yet his accent and warm nature remain undeniably northern.

Brought up on the Castle Howard estate, James remains a Yorkshire lad through and through and still spends plenty of time in his home county – “although not as much as I’d like to,” he adds.

It’s not the first time I’ve interviewed the TV chef. We first met around 12 years ago when he was promoting James Martin’s Great British Dinners and he remains just as charismatic and easy going now as he was back then.

There’s no doubt that this down to earth character is the reason over half a million people tune in to ITV each week to watch James Martin's Saturday Morning and why his other television programmes, books and live shows continue to be popular 26 years on from when he first appeared on our screens on The Big Breakfast and Ready Steady Cook.

This time we chat, he’s on the book tour again, promoting Potato which follows 2021’s bestselling cookbook, Butter. “We looked at all the ingredients there are and a variety of di erent things and, with the price of everything going through the roof, we thought that the potato is just so versatile,” explains James, who last year took over the sinking Spud U Like chain with Ronnie Bartlett of Scottish-based potato company Albert Bartlett. “I now know a lot more about potatoes than I ever did and it’s a fascinating subject.”

James’ love of potatoes goes back to his younger years growing up on the Castle Howard estate, where his father worked as a catering manager, and from visiting his grandparents’ allotment,

which overlooked the former Rowntree Macintosh Confectionary factory in York.

“That’s what got me into food in the first place,” he explains. “My grandfather used to produce the most amazing potatoes. Potatoes and roses were his thing because he used the most amazing fertiliser – horse manure – so the ground was so rich. You’d simply peel them, boil them and we used to have them with a little chopped parsley and butter and that’s all you wanted. That was one of the main dishes that changed my philosophy with food, that made me fall in love with food.”

Filled with over 130 recipes and techniques that will inspire you to put potatoes front and centre of your cooking, James’ new book gives an insight into why the spud is a staple in so many cuisines and o ers an easy guide to which types of potato to buy when, as well as plenty of ideas of di erent ways of serving your potatoes this Christmas.

“The roast potato is of course what most people do, but there are so many other interesting ways,” he says. “Hasselback potatoes, for example – just cut them with a knife and roast them and you get this

“When it comes to cooking, the potato is so versatile”

amazing crispiness to them. And mashed potato, or Pommes Aligot, most people have leftover cheese at Christmas so use some blue cheeses or a bit of Emmental. Emmental in a mash tastes absolutely amazing.

“There’s also your classic Boulangère, which is potatoes and onions and water and is named after the old bakers’ ovens in France. The bakers used to use their ovens in the morning and, as the coals died down, the villagers, who had very little money so just used simple ingredients, would take their potatoes, onions and water and cook them in the leftover embers of the wood fired oven. You can do them at home on a tray and then put lamb on the top – and one thing we have in Yorkshire is amazing lamb – and let the juices run onto the potatoes.”

But the book is about much more than the potato. For James, this unassuming ingredient is the embodiment of field-tofork cooking. “Nowadays, as chefs, we’re always trying to reinvent the wheel, but I’ve got allotments and little veg plots at home and at the back of my restaurants and I try and teach my chefs the same thing; to fully understand food, you’ve got to realise – and see – how di cult it is to produce,” James explains.

“I think, because of Covid and because of the price of food going up, we’ve learnt to respect food and the people

who produce it a lot more because it can be taken away from us so easily.”

And, James adds, the potato is a staple ingredient that can easily be grown at home – an activity he envisages we’ll all be doing much more of in the current economic climate. “It’s a great way to cut costs, but it’s also a great way for the younger generation to learn where their food comes from,” he says.

“It’s great for kids to see one potato sprout into 20-odd, it just wants water and time.”

And with that, time on our interview comes to an end as James has to rush up to Yorkshire to scout out venues for a new restaurant – one of five set to open up and down the country in 2023. “We’re looking at four or five sites in Yorkshire that are for sale. The sites are already up and running, but we’re looking to take them over and help them out with food,” he explains. “I think you can do two things in this climate – you can consolidate or you can push forward.”

With another busy year ahead, it doesn’t look like James’ Yorkshire retirement is going to come any time soon.

Martin's MORSELS

I used to spend every Christmas at the Black Swan at Helmsley – I’d go every year. I will be in Yorkshire this year, I usually go up Christmas afternoon to see my folks.

One of my favourite places to go and eat is Whitby – you can’t beat fish and chips at the Magpie Café.

I still love to go and walk the dog around Castle Howard, where I grew up and through the village there, Coneysthorpe.

Get to know… NATALIE ANDERSON

ACTRESS AND FOUNDER OF THE CAPSULE

Q Why did you first launch The Capsule?

A I was writing a fashion blog for Hello!, back in 2015-16, and I decided I wanted to expand on that. The premise behind it was I wanted to source and find things for women when they didn’t have time to go and do it themselves.

I started to get an idea that I wanted to create more of a website feel to it, and that was from 2017-18. That’s what I was doing very slowly because I was working full-time, and then in 2018 I was really struggling with my anxiety which I have had for a really long time, but I was really struggling privately with it. I had never discussed it in public, but I was finding products that were helping me and putting them on the website, saying this may help but not saying why. What I started finding was that those products and articles were doing the best, so it made me really think there was something going on here with women and mental health. Then we did a live event and the whole thing started to snowball, it got bigger and bigger very quickly. At this live event, it was obvious there were so many women who were not being supported in areas of wellbeing and mental health, and women’s health in general.

Q Do you enjoy creating The Capsule in Conversation podcasts?

A I love them. I never expected to feel the way that I did doing the podcasts. I never expected it be what it is. We are into season seven now, three years in, and I can’t even believe we have had over 80 guests. It gives me so much joy because every single person has something di erent to say and something di erent that will relate to another woman. That for me is the most beneficial part, being able to share people’s stories with other women so they go “actually, yes, I relate to that, I am not alone”. If it makes people feel less alone or weird, then that’s the most rewarding part.

Q You are also an ambassador for Smart Works. What does the charity do?

A Smart Works is an amazing charity and is something I am really passionate about. It’s a charity that helps to get vulnerable

and unemployed women back into the workplace. Across the board there is a spectrum of women that need to get back into work, but have lost their confidence and wouldn’t know how to start with the interview process, and Smart Works helps to give them the confidence.

Q

How do you look back on your acting career to date?

A I am really happy with it. I wouldn’t have thought at 12 when I started my first professional job that I would still be doing it 30 years later. I have been so fortunate to have done so many amazing things, with so many wonderful people, I have ticked a lot of boxes. I have been lucky enough to do the West End, to do soaps, to do films. I feel very fortunate

I have had those opportunities. I am proud of myself and how I have managed to navigate in what is a really di cult industry, but I think for me it never stops. It’s always a hustle! But there’s been some good stu in there.

Q Is Emmerdale the highlight?

A I would probably say the film that I did with Guy Pearce, Liam Neeson and Martin Campbell [Memory] last year is a highlight for me. Martin is the director of Casino Royale and I am a massive James Bond fan, so to get to work with him was pretty cool.

Q You are Yorkshire born and bred, so where are your three favourite spots in the county?

A When I start to think about home, that is when I start to get really emotional! Ilkley Moor, 100%, my number one place. I have to start every new year with a walk on Ilkley Moor, otherwise the year goes bad! It’s my

tradition now, to get up there and look out, it’s the most beautiful place to be.

Number two, Betty’s, either one of them, Betty’s in Harrogate and Betty’s in Ikley. It’s a tradition as well, it’s a special thing to go to Betty’s and get your egg custards and your cakes and things. That’s a massive piece of home for me.

Then my third place… This is a funny one, but I would say Leeds Bradford Airport. When I was little I used to go and watch the planes taking o and I love travelling so much, so for me the airport is a sense of adventure. I was so lucky to have it so close to where I live, it’s that freedom that we could hop o anywhere.

MISSING YOU

FATHER AND DAUGHTER

Limited Edition,

Sold Out

This piece will always hold a special place in my heart. I painted it in back in 2015 to support the awareness of and raise much needed funds for Motor Neurone Disease (MND). This terrible disease took my father’s life at the tender age of 49. The loss changed me in so many ways and learning to navigate my way through such a di cult time is something I continue to reflect on today. This piece shows the colour of poppies contrasting with the dark clouds and the way the sunlight breaks through reminds me of my father’s continued positive outlook in life, even towards the end. It is a wonderful piece and even though it brings back di cult memories, those are overshadowed by the legacy my father left behind and reminds me to appreciate the times we spent together. In total the piece raised close to £6,000 for the charity.

MISSING YOU

Limited Edition, Sold Out

This piece was created in memory of my dear Nanna whom I was very close to. Originally from Kendal, she relocated with my grandpa when his job brought him to Teesside and they stayed there until he passed away. My Nanna had family in the Lakes so would visit regularly and eventually she returned when she found love with an old flame from her teens. My Nanna was a small and very feminine lady so I wanted this piece to feel delicate, just like her. She would spend a lot of time gazing out of her window at the view, just as the sheep is doing here but in reality, I see the sheep as myself, looking to the skies hoping she’s happy up there somewhere.

HILLS, DALES AND WOOLLY TAILS

Limited Edition, Sold Out

This was my first commissioned piece in partnership with Welcome to Yorkshire to

commemorate the 2016 Tour de Yorkshire cycling race, and I remember feeling incredibly nervous about unveiling this piece. The brief was to keep it open and provide a true ‘feel of Yorkshire’ as well as include cyclists and reference the Tour, all in my own style. I included exaggerated rolling hills, dry stone walls, a hump-backed stone bridge over a stream, my trademark sheep, Ribblehead viaduct, Richmond Castle and numerous riders bearing the relevant team and winning jerseys. Oh and of course, the iconic yellow bike that so many people displayed in towns and villages along the route of the Tour. So much to fit in! It brings back wonderful memories of a partnership that has had such a big impact on me and my work.

DOUBLE TROUBLE Open Edition

This piece represents me with my wonderful twins when they were very young. My husband and I would often refer to them as ‘double trouble’ especially when they were toddlers and they were getting their hands into everything, often ending up filthy! They have such di erent personalities, one more confident and adventurous and the other a little more reserved, which I’ve reflected on in my composition of them here. I’ve used this piece to show two very di erent lambs, one being confident, playful and mischievous and showing o , the other enjoying a cuddle with mum where it’s nice and safe. Whilst growing up my daughter always did the talking and my son remained quiet and contemplative, standing back and letting his sister chatter away. Now they are teenagers, it’s changed again.

DOUBLE TROUBLE HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS FATHER AND DAUGHTER

I LOVE YOU AS FAR AS THE SUN

Limited Edition, Sold Out

This was a piece I created to celebrate my husband’s 40th birthday. Our twins would often say ‘I love you as far as the sun’ and I had a vision of what this would look like. The warm red hues, representative of love, mixed with the soft dream-like clouds, lend themselves perfectly to what they were saying. I painted them sat together looking out into the sky, as far as the sun. Until this point I had never actually drawn my children. They had always been represented in other forms such as flowers in my early paintings or sheep as they got older. I kept the edition size very small for this piece as it felt a lot more personal.

HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS

Limited Edition, Sold Out

This is another family-orientated piece and the title explains it all with the piece showing that home is really where my heart is. Home is comfort, love, noise, laughter, tears, togetherness and it’s uniquely ‘us’ no matter where we are. Every home pictured here is di erent showing how individual all our homes are. The warm reds were chosen to represent love and passion and the hearts from the chimneys represent the love emanating from the two homes in the centre. My earlier work was all based around houses and the houses represented people in my life, and sometimes, they even represented me as I would often see myself as one of the houses. In this piece, it was the time before my husband and I got married and we lived in separate houses, but desperately wanted to be together. I’ve since painted a piece called ‘Sending Love’ and another called ‘Rainbow of Hope’ which are similar to this piece showing groups of houses or family homes that radiate love.

A YORKSHIRE GARDEN

Limited Edition, Sold Out

Commissioned by Welcome to Yorkshire for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2018, this holds lovely memories for me. I was asked to create a painting of Mark Gregory’s garden, but placing it into a Yorkshire backdrop. I really enjoyed creating the piece, however it was the experience of being at Chelsea Flower Show that was the most rewarding for me. Standing next to Mark’s award-winning garden with my piece on show in the glorious sunshine, was something I will never forget.Penhill in Wensleydale provides the perfect backdrop in my painting and the scene is set in high summer, everything in full bloom and looking beautiful. I have painted several other dales scenes since, and they are always well received. I was recently commissioned by the Wensleydale Heifer in Leyburn to create a piece specifically for their property, which now sits in the award-winning restaurant.

WOOL MEET AGAIN Open Edition

This piece was created in October 2022 at the height of the pandemic and was a nod to the strange world we were all living in at the time. I was in a di cult head space at this point with so many worries about keeping our businesses afloat and ongoing changes to government support, there were times we thought we might not make it through.

But on this bright and colourful street of rainbow houses, the red and yellow poppies shine bright with hot air balloons on the horizonand the crowd of woolly visitors are on their way to brighter pastures. This piece pays homage to the great British song of WWII by Vera Lynn when families and loved ones found themselves separated. The title brings a twist to the original song title, to reflect that good humour that defines us in times of adversity.

SHAMBLES, YORK

Shambles is one of York's most famous landmarks and one of the best-preserved medieval shopping streets in Europe. With its cobbled streets and overhanging buildings, it is believed to have been the inspiration behind Diagon Alley from the movie adaptation of the Harry Potter series.

Although none of the original shopfronts have survived from medieval times, some properties still have exterior wooden shelves, reminders of when cuts of meat were served from the open windows. The street was made narrow by design to keep the meat out of direct sunlight, but you can readily imagine the Shambles packed with people and awash with o al and discarded bones.

Today, the beautiful old buildings have been restored and now house cheerful cafés, quirky boutiques and even a coin and stamp dealer, and the smells are rather more pleasant with aromas from the chocolate, fudge and sweet shops, clothes and accessories and gift shops.

There’s no place like Yorkshire at Christmas, as towns and villages, from big to small, truly sparkle for the festive season

SANTA AND HIS HELPERS

ASKRIGG

The tiny Wensleydale village might be a small and unassuming place, but it’s not one to steer clear of the true magic of the Christmas season. Small or not, the villagers go big every year and it’s a joy to walk around and soak up both the beauty of the Dales location, but also the community Christmas vibe and magic that is created because of it.

But what makes it so special? Naturally, it’s pretty easy to feel festive and twinkly when the surroundings are quaint, e ortlessly beautiful and flanked by gorgeous countryside and the village is only made up of handful of houses along the linear street, but still boasts three pubs, a brewery, a tea room, an award-winning B&B and perfectly seasonal craft shops.

However, the real magic comes from the fact that the entire village of Askrigg creates an advent window for the month of December. Everyone loves the excitement of popping open an advent window for every day of the month, so what better than an entire village turning into an advent calendar? Each night, a new window magically comes alive and, with many an artist living amongst the community, you can expect some real spectacles to take in.

If that’s not enough, it’s also the home of Wensleydale cheese, and let’s face it, it’s not really Christmas without some Wensleydale.

RICHMOND

Speaking of age-old traditions and things that really get people fully immersed in the magic and folklore that surrounds Christmas and New Year, the cobbled market town of Richmond in North Yorkshire has it all. As a real community hub and the gateway to the Dales, Richmond does pull out all the stops in the run up to Christmas. As a particularly theatrical and musical town, there are plenty of local carol concerts, as well as lovely small Christmas markets, independent shops and historic sights – there’s always a particularly magical feeling as you walk around the town.

But it’s Christmas Eve when the town truly comes to life. Take a day trip there and find yourself confronted by the legend of the Old Hoss, a hobby horse made with a real horse’s skull, which will be making its way around town. T’Owd ‘Oss (as he is known locally around the town) is a friendly beast and seeing him is said to bring good luck for the new year. The custom is believed to have pagan origins, with known records dating back to the 17th century.

You’re not short of festive walks in Richmond either and amazing independent shops, and you could always follow the walk along the legend of the Little Drummer Boy.

KNARESBOROUGH

Another particularly picturesque and quaint destination to make it onto the list, but when it comes to finding the magic at Christmas, Knaresborough and its surrounding areas couldn’t not be featured. The town always attracts attention for its prettiness, independent traders and brilliant hospitality

and Christmas is, of course, no exception. But it’s what lies on the outskirts of the town that makes it a really magical Christmas day out.

Once you’ve finished your Christmas shopping in town, take a wander to the nearby Fountains Abbey as the afternoon light starts to fade, and stroll through the ruins aglow with bright and colourful lights. You can even sing along to your favourite carols as festive music fills the air while you walk around, making for a spectacularly special atmosphere. Walk beneath the cellarium's vaulted ceilings as choirs and bands will be performing from 2-3pm every Saturday in December.

If that’s not enough to get the magic going, the nearby Mother Shipton’s Cave also has their enchanted Christmas Village throughout the month of December – it’s a brilliant wonderland for those with children.

MALTON

So it might not be a secret that Malton is one of the most magical places to head to in the festive season to get really into the foodie fever of Christmas – it’s the food capital of Yorkshire, after all. There really is something quite special about somewhere that so proudly celebrates

35

local provenance, local makers and producers, and local talent in general.

You’ll find an abundance of di erent foodie o erings for gifts, from locally distilled gin to brilliant bakes. But, it’s also a lovely place to head at Twixmas, when you’re just not quite ready to let go of the over-indulgence of Christmas Day and want nothing more than to celebrate the season of mince pies, chocolates, mulled wine and cheese. Trust us, Malton will make you feel enveloped in cosiness, local love and a festive food frenzy. Oh, and once you’re done filling your boots, you could always pop to Christmas at Castle Howard to continue the magic.

WHITBY

For somewhere a little bit bigger and for a larger festive day out, Whitby is a brilliant option for immersing yourself in all things Christmas. Not only are the winding medieval streets beautifully twinkling with festive fairy lights and the abundance of independent and unique shops waiting

and welcoming with their doors open for Christmas shopping, but there’s also the chance to make it a whole festive day out. Why not take the 15 minute car journey outside of the town to the village of Grosmont and hop upon the Santa Express with North Yorkshire Moors Railway? This enchanting Christmas experience sees Santa and his jolly helpers pass through the heritage carriages, giving children a chance to meet the legendary man himself on board the train, and gifting a special present to all the children on board. Santa will visit you in your seat and check if you’ve been good or bad.

Once back in Whitby, the Christmas Ice Rink is also a brilliant option for family fun and magic, and the annual Whitby Krampus Run from 3-4 December is a sure fire way to keep the magic of the season alight. The costumed street parade is an interpretation of the Alpine winter tradition with inclusion of local folklore and history to infuse a unique take on the Krampus legend and lore. The streets come alive this weekend with festive enchantment.

YORK

You’d struggle to find a place that’s more magical than York at Christmas time. The city really goes all out with events in the festive period and the atmosphere is particularly special throughout December and into the New Year because of it.

There’s the obvious Yorkshire Winter Wonderland that the city hosts each year, but for something more traditional, York Castle Museum and Kirkgate celebrate a Dickensian Christmas – don’t worry, it’s the opposite of a Scrooge-like atmosphere.

On 20-21 December, you can even join the Castle Museum on the snow-covered cobbles of Kirkgate for an immersive and intimate production of A Christmas Carol, which brings the magic of the much-loved Dickens classic to life.

On top of that, there’s the more alpine-style Christmas Markets and don’t miss the wonderful Advent procession at York Minster, too, which is always a magical way to mark the start of the Christmas period.

Wine recommendations for Christmas

Baron de Lay Rioja Reserva, Spain  £12

Made primarily using Tempranillo grapes that are grown in Baron de Ley’s Mendavia vineyards, this Reserva's deep cherry colour and complex aromas are the result of spending 20 months in new oak casks, followed by maturation in the bottle. coop.co.uk

Campaneo Old Vines Garnacha, Spain  £5

A beautifully smooth, rich and full-bodied red with rich plum notes, light spice flavours and just a touch of cherry on the finish. This Garnacha is made from old bush vines 15 to 50 years of age, which give the wine its concentrated fruit flavours. tesco.com

The Hidden Sea Red Blend, Australia  £7.50

This wine is a wellcrafted combination of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Malbec. It is bright red with aromas of red berries, fruit cake spice and toasty oak. These characters carry onto the palate, which is smooth, rich and long. coop.co.uk

CHEF’S

TABLE

We delve into a festive food frenzy and explore what’s on the table at Christmas for these well-known Yorkshire cooks

62 ABSOLUTELY magazines
TOMMY BANKS

Tommy Banks

Ahousehold Yorkshire name who thrives in a busy restaurant is Tommy Banks of The Black Swan in Oldstead. But unlike Frances Atkins’ love for seasonal vegetables (see right), Tommy likes to turn to a very traditional pastime of preserving when it comes to the festive period. “Wintertime is always a challenge if you’re a chef that uses seasonal produce, as not much particularly grows around this time of the year,” he says. “You’ll have the odd root veggie making an appearance here and there, but otherwise we turn to our glut of preserved produce we’ve been building up over the year. This is most exciting for me and the team as we get to work with some really cool, preserved ingredients and it really pushes our creativity.”

With such a creative but traditional touch to the menu, I wonder what Christmas looks like at The Black Swan. “I may be biased, but Oldstead is a magical time at

Christmas – frosty fields and snowy lanes that look like something out of a fairytale,” smiles Tommy. “Then you step inside The Black Swan and our fire is roaring, and one of the team is ready to get you a drink, and it does feel like the perfect place to be.”

When it comes to tips for prepping best for Christmas dinner, Tommy focuses on taking a deep breath. “Keep calm and get ahead is my motto,” he says. “Do all your veggies the day before so that on Christmas Day you only have the meat to think about.” But what will be on his table this year? “I think we’re going to go duck this year – I’ve noticed a move away from the traditional turkey, and duck is such a great option,” he says.

For Yorkshire traditions, Tommy falls back onto a dessert favourite – although a little less sweet this time. “I absolutely love eating cheese with Christmas cake,” he smiles. “That, and obviously going to York Christmas Market, or Christmas at Castle Howard to see all the lights!”

Frances Atkins

It’s been a big year for Michelin star chef and household name Frances Atkins, as she moved away from well-known The Yorke Arms and set up Paradise Food with Roger Olive and John Tullett. Now, after a solid few months of running the new restaurant, Frances is looking forward to sharing her love for seasonality and traditional festive food throughout the winter and Christmas period.

“Every season brings its joy, and it would be very boring if you cooked the same old stu all the time,” she smiles. “But this time of year is really great! We’ve got all the great colours and di erent root vegetables, as well as all the amazing autumnal fruits and lots of game. It’s all about the more robust flavours in our winter menu, which adds lots of stimulation both mentally and to the palate. At the restaurant, we use as much wild and natural foods as we can, which is perfect for Christmas.”

When it comes to the restaurant, what can people expect over the joyful and indulgent period? “It’s very exciting because we are in the middle of making huge indoor live hanging baskets, which will be all around the restaurant, and we’ve got a 14 foot Christmas tree coming in, too,” beams Frances. “It will be a very atmospheric feel to Paradise and, as far as the food is concerned, we make everything ourselves. So, we are making all our own mincemeat and all the traditional festive elements.”

What tips would Frances o er people prepping for Christmas dinner? “Don’t overdo it and keep things super fresh and super simple,” she says. “If you want to do something special with your sprouts such as sticking some chestnuts or black garlic in them, just do the one special dish and then have something simple as an accompaniment. I would say make your vegetables the centre-piece and work everything else around it. Simplicity is key! A chef will refer to a dish as being clean, and that means it’s unfussy.”

When it comes to Yorkshire festive traditions, Frances loves a good, generous Yorkshire kitchen. “You can’t beat the good old Yorkshire puddings for filling you up with some caramelized onions,” she smiles. “Boiled fruitcake is very Yorkshire and are just to die for, they are lovely.”

And on her personal table this year? “A well-cooked turkey is super with cold bread sauce. Boxing Day is the best day with cold turkey, cold bread sauce and Christmas pudding that has been fried in marmalade with a big dollop of custard.”

Luke French

If 2022 is anything to go by for Joro owner and chef Luke French, then he’s one to watch in 2023. This year has seen Joro hit critical acclaim and be nominated for multiple awards, Luke and his wife Stacey Sherwood-French have moved into a commerce venture, too, are working on a second She eld site, and as if that wouldn’t be enough, are releasing their first cookbook in December. “It’s been such a highlight and a huge project both personally and professionally,” he says. “It’s about the industry and the key

players in our generation who are at the top of their game and making changes for the good of the industry – it’s exciting!”

So, with such an amazing year under their belt, what are they most looking forward to when it comes to Joro and being a chef in the festive period? “I personally love this time of year,” he smiles. “There’s nowhere I’d rather be, other than in the kitchen, than outside in the wild cold weather foraging and fishing. My weekends as a kid at this time of year were spent out on the game shoots, so I think that’s got something to do with it. So, as a chef, creatively winter pushes me the most as there are less ingredients that are easy to use. You’ve got to challenge yourself and your abilities and, because of that, I believe our cooking at this time of year is the most delicious.”

At Joro, the best of the season is already on the menu, so the food isn’t strictly focused around a festive or Christmas menu. “It’s quite a nice haven if anyone is wanting to avoid the big Christmas parties!” smiles Stacey. Instead, the restaurant really comes into its own with their festive drink o ering.

“We focus quite heavily on the drink side of things and make a lot of festive creations, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic Christmas drink recipes that can be paired with the menu. Our retail side of things has a lot of festive wine and drink gift sets available.”

For Luke, it’s about doing Christmas a bit di erently and looking at the festive flavours in a more subtle way. “We’ll use fermented plum instead of cranberry with duck, for example,” he says. “Spiced red cabbage is always a good one, though!”

What tips would Luke o er for prepping best for the main event this year. “Just do as much preparation as possible before the big day,” he says. “I spend two days before getting ready. I brine the turkey, too, in a simple salt water and submerge the bird in it for a good day or two so it permeates into the centre of the bird. It’s really important with white meat, as it can dry out so easily. Get your potatoes parboiled o in a bit of salt water, get them nice and crumbly, drain them o and let them dry in the fridge for 12 hours or so – you’ll get a much better roast potato!”

CHAMPAGNE MOMENTS

Since its inception, PiperHeidsieck owes its success to audacious leadership and a pioneering spirit, anchored in its companywide practices – an approach now being recognised by others.

The House showcases its unwavering commitment towards a conscientious, sustainable future and responsible Champagne production by implementing several initiatives across a number of areas including its carbon footprint reduction, vineyard operations, social impact and supplier management.

Now, the e orts of the Champagne House, Piper-Heidsieck, have been recognised as it becomes B Corp Certified, joining a community of companies that are leading a global movement for an inclusive, equitable, and regenerative change.

A NEW WAY FORWARD

B Corp certification is given to businesses that meet high standards of social

and environmental impact, verifying its performance, accountability, and transparency by allowing information to be measured against B Lab’s criteria. Piper-Heidsieck obtained a score of 91.9 points, verified by B Lab, the non-profit network founded in 2006.

Acquiring the certification is an extensive process involving the assessment of each brand’s social and environmental influence with more than 200 questions as defined by B Lab, covering governance, employees, communities, and the environment.

PIPER-HEIDSIECK CEO BENOIT COLLARD

“Achieving B Corp certification reflects our pioneering ethos and daring initiative

to be a driving force of change within the Champagne industry. This certification not only recognises our environmental impact in the vineyards, but extends to our entire winemaking ecosystem, our community and our workplace.

“This process began with an innovative vision from our Chief Winemaker Emilien Boutillat, which propelled our entire team on a journey to work together towards a shared mission, and I am immensely proud to see this remarkable achievement brought to life. Becoming B Corp Certified marks a commemorative occasion in the history of Piper-Heidsieck, yet it also signifies that together we are striving towards sustainable change and we hope to inspire others in the wine industry to implement similar initiatives.”

For Piper-Heidsieck, the B Corp certification represents a first milestone in the reinvention of the iconic Champagne House’s operations towards a positive and purpose-driven business model.

“Christmas for me is all about wrapping up, keeping cosy, while also keeping it super stylish”

Four to the FORE

Leeds-based fashion designer, Sian Gabbidon, gets into the spirit and suggests her top

looks for the festive season

Christmas is fast approaching and it's my favourite time of the year for fashion. Here are my four top Christmas tips to keep you stylish throughout the festive season.

Christmas for me is all about wrapping up, keeping cosy and spending time with the family – while also keeping it super stylish.

WINTER WALKS

There is nothing better than a crisp winter walk; even for someone who doesn't like the cold, I still love to do this every year. Frosty mornings and cosy fits are probably one of my favourite outfit combos of all time. And for this look, oversized is essential! The base layer would be a black long sleeved fitted top and matching body-sculpting leggings teamed with a nude oversized quarter zip statement

fleece and chunky nude boots. Raining? No problem at all. Finish the look with a cap to bring the whole vibe together.

WORKS CHRISTMAS PARTY

It's that time of the year again and we’re all looking for that perfect Christmas party outfit. Traditionally, everyone thinks sequin, but for the work’s do, I've personally always been a fan of the more casual look.

We all love the ‘jeans and a nice top’ look and it's perfect for the work Christmas party this year. The e ortless style means you’re not super dressy or too casual and just somewhere in-between. You could wear a pair of high waisted, boyfriend fit jeans teamed with a loose fit pink satin shirt half tucked in and matching strappy pink heels. This will bring a bit of colour to the party – finished with a mini bag and lots of stunning gold jewellery!

GLAM GIRLS NIGHT

Now we all love a work Christmas party, but there's nothing better than a night out with the girls over the festive period. And for this, I think a statement dress is certainly needed! It’s the date that's been in the diary for months and one you won't forget for a while – so, make sure you’re dressed for the occasion.

Every festive season needs a statement dress, and my fave for 2022 has to have either a little bit of sparkle or a little bit of feather to finish. I’d opt for a fitted LBD with a feather detail to it, clashing metallic heels with a matching clutch and, of course, a full glam hair and make-up look.

COSY CHRISTMAS NIGHT IN

Now, I’m a huge fan of nights out, but is there anything better than a cosy night in during the festive season? I have the candles on, the blankets draped over the sofa and have a selection of Christmas films and chocolate on tap. To really complete this, though, is the cosy comfies to match.

For this, the outfit needs to be the most comfortable of all – sleepwear! And if it’s a family a air, it has to be matching – including the dog. Yes, I said it – the dog has matching PJs too! I love a loose fit two-piece checked set teamed with a snug hooded blanket and flu y slippers; without a doubt these are my go-to for the perfect cosy Christmas night in.

SHINE of the TIMES

The latest collection from Anthropologie, found at their store in Leeds, will certainly mean you are the life and soul of the party this Christmas

ANTHROPOLOGIE.COM

The Triple-Four Racing Chronograph has made a seriously dazzling impression on the world of horology since its launch this autumn. Limited to just 500 examples, the debut timepiece from new British firm Brooklands Watch Company is a modern classic with heritage at its heart.

Designed by the visionary Sir Terence Conran, the Triple-Four is inspired by the golden age of racing at Brooklands, the birthplace of motor sport and aviation in Britain. Sir Terence’s father often attended the races at Brooklands’ historic track in Surrey and his mother learnt to fly at its Flying Club.

His Triple-Four Chronograph design references the record-holding NapierRailton racing car built at Brooklands in 1933. The watch face perimeter is banked, echoing Brooklands race track’s unique

sloped embankment, while the blue leather strap echoes the distinctive block tread design of early car tyres. Its back reveals a rotor design modelled after the car’s legendary Triple-Four Aero aircraft engine.

The Triple-Four has already received praise from the likes of Tracey Llewellyn, watch editor of The Telegraph. In The Best Watches for Motoring Enthusiasts in WatchPro, Tracey noted that “watches and cars are a match made in mechanical heaven” and named the Triple-Four “a modern classic”.

An ideal Christmas gift, each of the 500 limited-edition watches is individually numbered, signed by Sir Terence and presented in a beautiful blue velvet-lined leather watch box. Displayed neatly inside are the Triple-Four Chronograph, a slim brass warranty card and a members badge. This badge entitles the Triple-Four owners to a drive on Brooklands’ world-famous Test Hill track in a specially commissioned Brooklands Watch Company electric Bugatti Baby II car.

Brooklands Watch Company was founded by aeromechanical engineer Simon Je s. “The Triple-Four is a piece of art with a purpose. It has a beating heart and a story of British motor racing to tell,” he explains. “I’ve enjoyed flying for many years and settled mainly on helicopter flying before motorsport took over.

I visited Brooklands racetrack to see my uncle’s Brooklands racing car being run after many years in storage. It was incredible. I was astonished that Brooklands built and operated the first Motor Racing Chronograph accurate to 1000th second in 1907. This inspired me to create a luxury British watch brand.”

The limited-edition Triple-Four retails at £5,754 and is available on the Brooklands Watch Company website and until the end of the year exclusively at The Conran Shop, Chelsea. Brooklands Museum Trust and London’s Design Museum will both benefit from the sale of each watch.

Skin Laundry prides themselves on having made laser facials ‘a thing’, so this month I stopped into their Soho location to see what all the buzz is about. I was advised to start o with their Signature Laser Facial, which acts as an introduction to their laser procedures. The treatment is performed using a YAG laser, which works by penetrating deep into the skin. This second layer of skin is where most of the problems exist, hence why laser treatments are a cure-all for most skincare a ictions. As it was working, the technician explained how the laser is able to target each of my major skin concerns, which are hormonal acne, fine lines and hyperpigmentation. I wouldn’t describe the procedure as uncomfortable, but as the laser works, you do feel a zapping sensation, which is similar to how laser hair removal feels, just less intense. I noticed the laser getting louder and slightly more painful in certain areas, which is apparently because that is where there was more congestion or pigmentation. Any discomfort was only temporary, the technician did just four passes over my face and I was in and out of the door in under 30 minutes. This, and the minimal downtime afterwards, is why I think this facial would be perfect for anyone wanting to squeeze a quick treatment into their lunch break.

1. TAKE YOUR TIME

The temptation is to just put your trainers on and start running, but most injuries occur from doing too much too soon, so you need to think long term and follow a training plan. The body can do incredible things if given time to adapt and plenty of opportunity to recover from the stress of training. You will need to give yourself enough time to build up to a marathon, but how long exactly depends on your starting point; for example, the beginner plan on the Onetrack app is 16 weeks.

2. KNOW YOUR BODY

Before taking on any sport it's a good idea to get yourself ready to perform and have your mechanics evaluated. With running, the most important thing is to assess if your body has the capacity to distribute the load evenly. The biomechanics screen at our Onetrack studio is able to identify what could lead to excessive stress being placed on any one joint, muscle or ligament. Knowing this information helps us implement the most impactful corrective exercises and hopefully minimise the risk of injury.

3. FIND SOME SUPPORT

Finding and staying connected to a community of runners is essential because it can help you feel more motivated and give you a sense of accountability. Many people also find working with a coach during the training process very beneficial, as it’s a soundboard to vent at and a source of reassurance. You can access the support of coaches easily via the Onetrack app, which is available to download from the App Store and Google Play, with subscription plans starting at £15 per month.

CREATIVE CHRISTMAS

This is a special time of year for families, but there’s so much more we can all do to create long-lasting memories

90 ABSOLUTELY magazines

Idon’t know many children who don’t like Christmas. Whether you celebrate as a Christian festival or in a more general celebratory sense, it is, without doubt, a special time of the year. However, it is so easy to get caught up in plans and arrangements, in lists, and in food and presents that you miss some of the simpler (and arguably, more wholesome and worthwhile) aspects of the season. It’s also a wonderful time to build in some interesting and enjoyable family activities and perhaps create new family traditions.

I once read a book, many years ago, about building rituals into your children’s life and that of the family. These can run through the year and can be especially poignant at Christmas. One of ours was, and still is, a ectionately called “BGS” – Big Girl

Supper – each Friday evening throughout the year. Even though our daughters are all now in their twenties, they still come home and ask if we are having BGS and those Friday nights have become a staple of family life. Family traditions that each family may have at Christmas build memories and family strength throughout each child’s life. It’s never too late to add some more and enrich family history forever. When my children were very young, I had a box of seasonal and Christmas books that came out in December and were packed away again at the beginning of January. This was the source of great fun and the opportunity to be reunited with certain special books lasted for many, many years – a bit like remembering the Christmas tree decorations, as they each come out of the box, like old friends every year.

“Family traditions at Christmas build memories and family strength”

There are also endless opportunities for creative activities for all ages and tastes – printing wrapping paper, wrapping parcels, making gift tags… the list goes on and I have no doubt that you have plenty of ideas of your own.

Try to make time for some outdoor activities each day of the holidays. It certainly doesn’t need to be commercial or expensive: collect cones, holly and evergreen and make table centres, or put on your wellies and come back for hot chocolate and mince pies.

Your teenagers will probably be out and about, with friends, at parties and celebrating as well as lying in! Apart from their social lives outside the home, give them some opportunities to get involved (and find the real child within – not the sophisticated teenager). Why don’t you give them free rein of the kitchen for a celebration family meal of their choice. Alternatively, o er them the opportunity to host a dinner party for their friends, give them a budget and an opportunity to plan a menu, decorate the table – and clear up! Perhaps even o er to be waiters for the evening.

Whatever you choose to do, however you choose to celebrate, it’s an important time for each member of the family to enjoy time with friends and family, so let’s encourage each other to look for new, creative ways to share time together. It’s so important to relax and restore before the various routines start up again.

HEIGHT OF EDUCATION

David Gri ths reflects on his first year as

Q Today, what is the ethos behind The Mount School’s educational approach?

A Creating an environment where every girl is valued, enabled to flourish and given the confidence to know they can achieve, is at the heart of The Mount School ethos. We are the only all-girls Quaker school in the UK. A Quaker education at The Mount School does more than just prepare girls for academic achievement. It prepares them for life. Mount girls go out into society as people who combine responsibility and independence with an open-minded, questioning attitude. Mount girls grow into remarkable women who want to help to make the world a better place.

Q Why does single sex education work for you?

A For over 230 years, The Mount School York has been a community brought together by our shared values – ‘knowing girls can’. This means that girls can expect a school life where they are empowered

in York

that is fostered for each and every girl. The Mount provides a space for girls to flourish on their own terms. They have a safe environment in which to discuss, debate and respectfully disagree, allowing the girls to lose their fear of making mistakes. Instead, they learn to embrace the process and to embrace change. The knock-on e ect is an inevitably positive influence on girls’ resilience, confidence, emotional intelligence and future success.

Q How would you sum up the curriculum you follow at the school?

A The education that we o er has a strong academic backbone around which is sculptured a distinct holistic body shaped by our Quaker values – simplicity, truth, equality, peace, social justice, and sustainability. Through our special ethos, pupils understand global issues and develop an awareness, not only of their place in the world, but of how they can positively influence it in their own lives. They are confident in their voice, and they challenge injustice when they see it. Our last inspection described our pupils as 'exuberantly confident, keen to learn with a sense of empowerment'.

to believe in themselves, where they are taught in the way commensurate with how they naturally learn and enjoy access to all opportunities irrespective of any of the ‘gender-bias’ that can all-too-often temper our society. One of the unique aspects of an all-girls education at The Mount is the sense of belonging and confidence

I have introduced a super-curricular programme to The Mount, this is all about putting pupils in scenarios, situations and experiences that will make an impact on their CV whilst engendering both knowledge and understanding of the world outside of the school gates.

Academic enrichment, blended with co-curricular activities such as music, performing arts, drama and sport, create

a powerful holistic educational entity. We cannot fully know what the future society is going to look like exactly. So, as educators, we need to provide our children with a comprehensive education and the skills and emotional intelligence to adapt.

At The Mount we develop our pupils’ talents by encouraging them to take part in Fine Art exhibitions, drama, and dance productions and in our vibrant musical programme. Our children also explore the world, through our Model United Nations programme, Peace Jam Curriculum and a wide range of trips and overseas expeditions. They develop cultural interests, participate in academic competitions, and undertake adventurous experiences. They discover their voices and how they can make an impact by being members of active committees and councils.

The spin o s in terms of UCAS applications and job interviews are, of course, superb. This applies to the actuality of having taken part and to the more subtle e ects on the development of an individual’s personality and character through involvement in these activities.

Q What boarding provisions do you o er – and what is the atmosphere like in the houses?

A Our extensive day school is enhanced by our fantastic boarding environment.

education

We welcome full, weekly and flexi boarding pupils. Boarders join us from all over the world, including Asia, mainland Europe, and the UK.

Boarding life at The Mount School is an enriching experience where girls are encouraged to live adventurously by trying new things and making the most of the opportunities available to them. The Boarding House is located at the centre of School, meaning boarding pupils are truly at the heart of the community. We provide an environment where everyone is respected and valued, each child is treated as an individual.

Q When pupils leave you, what are they prepared for?

A Quaker education at The Mount School does more than just prepare girls for academic achievement. It prepares them for life. Mount girls go out into society as people who combine responsibility and independence with an open-minded, questioning attitude. Girls grow into remarkable women who want to help to make the world a better place.

Q This interview will be in the Christmas issue – do you do anything di erently around this time?

A This will be my first Christmas at The Mount and I am very much looking forward to experiencing the many Christmas traditions. They begin with the School’s Christmas Fayre organised by the Parents' Association on Saturday 3 December. The Fayre is open to the public from 10am, Santa and his reindeer will also be in attendance!

In the last week of term, the Senior School will gather to watch the College Pantomime, scripted, directed by and starring our Sixth Form College pupils. This is a tradition that has been running at The Mount for many years.

ROCKETT ST GEORGE HAS OPENED AT REDBRICK MILL

Given that Jane Rockett excitedly beams as she tells me how wonderful and inspiring Yorkshire interiors influencers are, it’s perhaps no surprise that the leading cult interiors brand Rockett St George recently chose Yorkshire as the location for one of their few bricks and mortar stores.

Set up by Jane Rockett and Lucy St George 15 years ago, the brand's ethos is to always provide inspiration for customers to be brave enough to express themselves creatively in their own homes. And inspiration is something that comes naturally to the duo, with their own founding of the brand an inspiring, homegrown success story. “Jane and I had been friends for a long time, we were originally mum friends, and after years of hanging out together and always discussing our own homes, interiors and ideas, we decided to pool our resources and start a business,” explains Lucy.

“We went online and I don’t think we realised quite how bold that actually was 15 years ago – it was quite early in the online shop world. Jane has a background in PR and marketing and I had a background in retail, so we pooled our own financial and personal resources and gave it a go. Fast forward to now and we’ve got 50 sta , six warehouses in Sussex, our store on Neal Street in London and our new store in Yorkshire. It’s been a wild ride!”

From the early stages of the company, it’s clear that passion for interiors and a hunger for thrifting and creativity was something that came naturally to the pair. “We both worked, had young children and had our own homes, but we didn’t have a lot of money, so we would spend our time moving our furniture around, poring through Living Etc and going to car boot sales,” smiles Jane. “We wanted to make our interiors stand out from the crowd and we noticed our friends were asking us to source things for them. There were not a lot of interiors shops out there at the time and I remember thinking, unless you’ve got an awful lot of money, where do you go for

exciting interiors things? We did everything ourselves, we got SEO for Dummies, Websites for Dummies, and rang everyone up asking for advice, and we just went for it. I’d love to say we had a big business plan and investment, but we didn’t!”

It’s fair to say that the duo didn’t see the monumental success they’ve achieved coming. But they knew how to put a good press release together, and their first call was from none other than Vogue. “From that point on, we bent over backwards for magazines, and we became a bit of a go-to because we were e cient and we never said no – pre smartphone, that was huge,” says Jane.

“Our first catalogue was a real thrill and our first proper warehouse was really exciting, but being asked to write two books has been amazing,” Lucy adds about highlights from the past 15 years. “We’re really grateful for the success we’ve had and a real highlight for us is meeting our customers – we’re all like-minded people, it’s like we’ve found our team. Having a concession at Liberty and being asked to do that was a really big thing for us, too.”

But it’s the new Redbrick Mill opening that the pair are desperate to shout from the rooftops and are most excited about at the moment. “Before lockdown, we did a book tour, and we were so overwhelmed by the reception we had in Manchester and Edinburgh that we said we need to be more up north,” explains Jane. “We don’t want to be faceless, we are real people and are a real brand and we want to meet customers face to face. Our launch was so amazing and was so well attended.”

What made the location perfect for the store? “We love the Redbrick set up and it’s a great destination homeware place,” says Lucy. “It’s unique and there’s nothing else like it in the whole country, as well as being such an amazing building. It’s like the perfect day out, you can browse round the shops and have some lunch in a really lovely environment.” For Jane, too, the opening has an added personal touch to it as well. “I’ve got a soft spot as my parents were both born in Huddersfield and my grandparents lived there, so I used to visit a lot and it’s quite special for me,” she says.

What’s lovely is that the new Redbrick Mill is a constantly changing destination of inspiration for those interested in unique interiors in Yorkshire. No two months will ever be the same and the founders are incredibly involved with

designing, creating and being there in person to pass on their wisdom. “We launch new products on a weekly basis on the website, so we want to reflect that,” says Jane. “We also want to make sure we hold lots of events in Yorkshire, so workshop events such as our ‘How To Decorate Your Fireplace’ that we have on in December. We have plans for talks, too, and for us to interview influencers live.”

Being close to their customers is clearly something that is incredibly important to both women, so I couldn’t help but pick their brains about the best interiors for Christmas. When it comes to decking the halls for the festive season, what would these two interior design aficionados o er as tips for decorating? “My style is probably quite maximalist, but I would say a tree with lots of baubles on, so the more the merrier is a good way to decorate,” smiles Lucy. “Fill the tree with inexpensive baubles and then splash out on a few iconic ones you love, but fill the rest with tonally coloured decorations.” For Jane, it’s all about the dining table this year. “Why not put a Christmas decoration on everyone's plate and write their name on it. Or, get some amazing concertina paper trees and put them down the centre with some fairylights. Basically, pick a theme and go for it – but incorporate Christmas into every room in the house!”

And their favourite Rockett St George products to look out for this season? “I love our decorations, they are so unique and so fun,” says Lucy. “I love seeing people picking them up in store and squealing with delight. We have a range with people like Madonna, David Bowie and Elton John, so if you can imagine having a Christmas tree filled with icons!” For Jane, it’s about the more simple decorations. “We’ve got these honeycomb ball decorations and stars and they are quite inexpensive, but they are big, bold and bright so you can get carried away for not a lot of money. I love fairylights too, I think the more you have, the more Christmassy it feels.”

Finally, what do the duo foresee happening with interiors trends next year? “I think we are going to see a lot more colour next year,” says Jane. “We need to create cheer and happiness. People are finding things hard at the moment and colour helps with the mood and promotes happiness, so I think there will be lots more rich colours as opposed to the neutrals. I’m excited for that, I like change!”

Gardeners Cottage is situated within a small hamlet of three other properties, adjacent to the historic Beauchief Hall and enjoys the usage of approximately 17 acres of communal grounds.

Originally dating back to the 1700s and derelict up until 2012, the beautiful property was sympathetically converted by the current owners to provide versatile accommodation over two floors. Overlooking the beautiful surroundings, Gardeners Cottage o ers a spacious dining kitchen, a stunning lounge with a double-height ceiling, three bedrooms and a ground floor bathroom.

The property has convenient access to the amenities of Dore and Millhouses, also being within easy reach of Abbeydale Road, Ecclesall Road, She eld’s city

centre and the Peak District National Park. The location of the property is well situated for recreational activities, including the De La Salle Club, and pleasant walks through part of the She eld Round Walk in Ladies Spring Wood.

Heading inside the property, there are some obvious stand out features. The spacious dining kitchen features an impressive central island, incorporating a matching timber work surface and providing breakfast seating. Appliances include a four-ring Lamona gas hob, integrated Lamona full-height fridge/ freezer and a washing machine.

The lounge is a characterful reception room that has a double-height ceiling with exposed timber beams and trusses. Having front facing hardwood double glazed windows, a hardwood double glazed circular panel and Velux roof windows, it also features pendant light points, wall mounted light points, and central heating radiators.

The focal point of the room is the log burner with a tiled surround and tiled slate hearth.

The Beauchief Hall Estate is approached from Beauchief Drive, where entrance gates open to a long, sweeping access road leading up to the hamlet of properties and Beauchief Hall. Gardeners Cottage also enjoys access to approximately 17 acres of communal grounds that are part of the Beauchief Hall Estate, which in total is approximately 40 acres. INTERIORS • REAL HOME

Q What is the first thing that catches your eye when first visiting Gardeners Cottage?

A The view! Surrounding the property is 17 acres of beautifully manicured lawns with three large ponds filled with wildlife, which also makes an impressive approach to the house.

Q How would you describe the location?

A It is tranquil. The grounds provide plenty of green space to enjoy and make you feel like you could be in the countryside. The property is actually located within 30 minutes to the centre of She eld, making it very convenient for commuting. The immediate surrounding area of the house is perfect for walks due to the grounds being bordered by an expanse of woodland. The location is also ideal for golfers; there are two Golf Clubs and a Golf Centre within 10 minutes of the house.

Q Can you tell us a little bit about Gardeners Cottage’s history?

A Gardeners Cottage sits in the grounds of the historic Beauchief Hall estate, all of which holds listed status. The Hall was built in 1671 by Edward Pegge using stone from the nearby ruined Beauchief Abbey. The death of Edward in 1679 saw the Estate being passed through the family by direct descent, until Edward’s great grandson passed in 1836. Over the years, the Hall has had a number of occupants, including a She eld manufacturing company in the 19th century, a school and eventually was converted into o ces. The impressive grounds of the Hall include a deer paddock to the rear, which is home to a herd of Red Deer and is believed to have been maintained since the early 18th century. Today, the small hamlet that Gardeners Cottage sits within contains three other residential properties.

Q What changes have you introduced?

A When we bought the house in 2012 it was used as o ces and housed an old tractor. We completely renovated the house and converted it for residential use.

Q Have you included many period features in the home?

A The retention of the beams throughout the property bring huge amounts of character to the living spaces.

Q Do you have a favourite room and why?

A The lounge because it has a doubleheight ceiling, overlooks the grounds of the Estate and spans approximately 27ft.

Q Is there plenty of entertaining space?

A There is plenty of space for entertaining, especially in the kitchen and lounge around the wood burning stove. The double-height ceiling in the lounge is a stand out feature too.

Q Who is this property perfect for?

A The layout is quite quirky, yet very versatile. It’s perfect for young professionals due to the short distance to the city centre and She eld’s hospitals. It would also be ideal for retired persons who are looking for their next home where they can enjoy the outdoors and a slower pace of lifestyle.

Q What will you miss the most when you leave?

A The outlook onto the open, landscaped grounds and the privacy they provide. The position of the property is completely unique and it has been wonderful to live within historic grounds. I won’t lie, I’ll also miss the rates and the bills, they’re cheap!

Christmas PAST

The French House Antiques have been trading for over 25 years. They have made countless trips to France, sourcing the hard to find, restoring the ‘past its best’ and keeping their prices low and their stock current with trends.

The team pride themselves on giving a bespoke and unique service. They can adapt and restore pieces to fit with your style and needs, with a host of highly skilled tradespeople available to adapt the old into the modern home. “That’s a service we o er that others don’t. If a table is too long, we can cut it down, we French polish, upholster and we deliver and install, which people appreciate, especially if it’s a huge mirror,” says Manon, one of the family members who runs the business.

Owner Stephen adds: “We have a good knowledge of all French antiques, but we love to buy mirrors, tables, and upholstery. We tend to buy what we love, but as we have got to know our customers and their tastes too, we do o er a bespoke sourcing service.”

Here are some tips from The French House when looking to incorporate the French style into your own home. The French are well known for having a certain casual yet cool style when it comes to clothing, but they also have an e ortlessly chic way with home interiors. This style works well in the modern contemporary home or the more traditional.

ADOPT THE LAISSEZFAIRE ATTITUDE

“You may have noticed that French homes are never too curated or too perfect –they simply strike the perfect balance between textures, colours and shapes. This can be achieved by mixing styles, including vintage / traditional antiques, with modern pieces,” says Lisa Dawson, an interiors writer and regular visitor to

THE FRENCH FARMHOUSE TABLE

Not only is a table a place to eat meals and entertain, but a workspace for all the family too. The French do tables so well! Beautiful tones and craftsmanship, which just get better with age. The French House have a large stock of tables available and if they don’t have what you are looking for, they will try to source one on a buying trip or you could order a bespoke table made using beautiful old boards. The team can advise on size, but recommend you allow at 60cm per person.

STATEMENT PIECES: LESS IS MORE

The French House have a variety of upholstered pieces from armchairs, sofa footstools, fireside chairs and more. The owners buy pieces often for their shape, even if they need to be completely reupholstered, like the pair of Louis style

armchairs below. All upholstered items can be bought in their current condition or to include restoration and reupholstery in the customer's own fabric. With a little bit of vision, beautifully crafted pieces are given a new lease of life. Paired with white or neutral walls, you have instant French vibes. Creating a French-inspired interior doesn’t always require revamping your entire space. You can simply add some interesting trinkets and tableware to your home. Check out the ‘Brocante’ section of The French House website for lots of interesting objects and ideas, some fabulous Christmas gifts too.

here the border of Lancashire crosses over to Yorkshire, up on the sweeping moors, is a company that will fulfil your dreams in terms of beautiful interiors. Only the best will do at Dovetail, a family-run company that designs by hand, uses a skilled team of craftsmen and supplies world-renowned names when it comes to appliances.

There has been huge investment at Dovetail so customers can see and touch these good-looking, highly functional appliances in situ in the new showroom located in an old coaching inn.

Everything has been well thought out on every level so customers are able to view examples of what they can achieve in their own home – whether that’s a hand-crafted kitchen, a wine room, a utility or simply a dog bed integrated into your new living space, Dovetail will deliver at the highest level.

WDovetail designer Chris Jardine explains: “We make everything ourselves and we oversee every project personally. We have a team of in-house contractors who undertake associated building works from knocking walls down to laying new floors.

“We are very fastidious and very precise. We are also very specific in taking whatever the client wants to achieve and seeing it through to fruition,” adds Chris, who uses traditional free-hand techniques, to render scaled-down drawings and plans enabling clients to visualise their space: “We don’t use computer aided design (CAD). We have found that clients like to have a physical piece of paper. It’s rare these days, but we have stuck to it as it works so well.”

Once the hand-drawn plans are finalised, Chris passes them to brother-in-law Russell Ingham, who then takes over the project creating detailed, high-spec technical drawings that go to Dovetail’s workshop in Keighley where skilled craftsmen hand-build the hardwood cabinetry.

While Dovetail was founded in the

1980s, fast forward to 2022 and the team today continues to o er the best in traditional woodworking techniques, but it has also moved with the times o ering the ultimate in 21st century technology from the likes of SubZero & Wolf, Quooker, Fisher & Paykel from New Zealand and Italian-manufactured Ilve.

The Quooker boiling water tap, the current kitchen ‘must-have’ can also be found at Dovetail, which prides itself on creating classic English kitchens, but with all the latest technology that embodies pure luxury. Some of Dovetail’s more recent projects have included boot rooms, a gun room, beautiful kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms as well as a wine rooms.

“Whatever a customer wants, they can rely on us to create it,” says Chris.

MARKET REPORT

Q When was Hopkinsons founded?

A We opened in the recession of September 2009.

Q What services do you o er?

A Residential property sales in Harrogate, Knaresborough, Pateley Bridge and its surrounding villages.

Q Has your o ering evolved since you first opened?

A Yes it has because we now recommend additional services that encompass residential lettings, solicitors, energy performance certificate providers and surveyors. Additionally we now cover a much wider area than we used to on recommendation.

Q Who makes up your team?

A We are a team of seven who work hard and long hours together to provide the highest customer care levels in the area.

Q How do you aim to make a client feel at ease?

A We listen and carefully understand each client's individual needs and then help them on their journey buying and selling with Hopkinsons. We have a significant volume of repeat business and have increased our o market sales and purchases by 20% in the last year.

Q Why Harrogate as the base for your operation?

A When I opened in 2009 I already had 20 years worth of experience buying and selling property for clients in the Harrogate area. It was a natural choice given the excellent range of schools, shops, restaurants and the stunning 200 acre Stray parkland that forms the heart of Harrogate.

Q Do you feel you have built up community support over time?

A Definitely yes as we have many loyal repeat clients who have used us again. In fact one client has used us five times! We also have put a lot back into the community with both a huge amount of local charity work, fundraising and sponsorships that aid not just the Harrogate district but Yorkshire as well.

Q Can you tell us about a stand out property currently on your books?

A The Old Mill, Rowden Lane, Hampsthwaite is a stand out. One of Nidderdale's finest character homes, The Old Mill is a handsome Grade II listed updated character family home that dates from the early 19th century. This stunning property features five bedrooms, is arranged over three floors and is set in manicured enclosed private gardens.

ARTS COUNCIL ENGLAND FUNDING

Recognising the quality of the arts in Yorkshire, Arts Council England will be continuing to support some of our finest venues

Arts Council England will be continuing its vital support of York Museums Trust for the next three years as a National Portfolio Organisation (NPO). The package of support will be £3.7m from April 2023 to March 2026. This came o the back of the announcement that Arts Council England will also continue to fund Yorkshire Sculpture Park to the tune of just over £4m over three years.

The York Museums Trust, which looks after York Art Gallery, York Castle Museum and York St Mary’s as well as the Yorkshire Museum and the Museum Gardens, is one of 990 cultural organisations across the country which has been awarded £446 million (each year) in support from the Government.

James Grierson, Chair of York Museums Trust, says: “This is excellent news and reflects the confidence that the Arts Council has placed in the collections and valuable work of York Museums Trust. Well over a million people visit and enjoy our venues and gardens each year. This is our city’s cultural heritage which is shared by everyone and is central to the warm welcome that York delivers to its many visitors. There are challenges within the current cost of living context, which may also impact on what and how the Trust is able to deliver, but everyone is committed to supporting the delivery of the Arts Council England’s Let’s Create Strategy for creativity and culture. We look forward to the next phase of the Trust’s future under the helm of Kathryn Blacker as the new Chief Executive when she joins us in January 2023.”

Arts Council England Chair, Sir Nicholas Serota, adds: “As well as continuing our commitment to our many established and renowned cultural organisations, I am deeply proud of the support we will be giving to those new organisations which will help ignite creativity across the country. We are facing economic pressures at present, but this funding is about an investment in our future. This portfolio will support the next generation of visionary inventors, makers, performers and artists. In particular, the growth of our funding

for organisations that support and develop work for children represents a profoundly important long-term investment in our country’s talent.”

Arts Council England Chief Executive, Darren Henley, says: “Together, each of the 990 organisations that have been o ered funding today will contribute to a portfolio that is rich, varied and truly national. This is our widest ever spread of investment across the country, ensuring that many more people will have access to a wider choice of exceptional art, culture and creative opportunities on their doorsteps. We are in tough times, but we must remember creativity brings with it extraordinary dividends, boosting our country’s economic growth, creating jobs, bringing communities closer together, and making us happier as individuals. Everyone deserves to enjoy the benefits it brings, and with this investment, we believe we’ve taken a decisive step towards making that vision a reality.”
