ABSOLUTELY’S December issue highlights
1
Money makes the world go round? Well, it feels like it's a constant in my life, and I am sure most people feel the same. Ever since I gazed in wonder as my student loan appeared in my bank account at university – and was quickly spent – I have had a love hate relationship with the humble pound.
As we hit the Christmas countdown, our finances become ever more important. It's why I felt the need to chat to Essex's Gemma Bird this month. Gemma, aka the Money Mum, has become a go-to voice for sensible financial advice, so she tells us how this came to be and offers some tips on how you should approach Christmas spending.

The thing I love the most about the festive season is having days on end to lounge about at home, so it's extra important everything feels cosy. Good timing, then, for the return of Absolutely Home, offering up plenty of ideas and inspiration.
And if you can't quite let things go after 25th December, Visit Essex suggest the best places to spend your money on during the Twixmas period.
Whatever you do, have a very merry one!

MAKE A BUDDY
Essex’s Jake Quickenden on taking on an iconic part in Elf - The Musical
The X Factor star Jake Quickenden will be stepping into the shoes of Buddy the Elf in the forthcoming production of Elf - The Musical, coming to Charter Hall for a 36-show run from 14th December 2024. Here’s what the Essex star had to say about taking on the role of Buddy.
Q What most appealed to you about accepting the role?
A Buddy is an iconic role and I needed no persuasion to take it. Plus I am often working away at Christmas and it’s rare to get the chance to play to my home audience.
This Month’s Must See
A CHRISTMAS CAROL
t’s Christmas Eve and tight-fisted Ebenezer Scrooge is meaner than ever. He is shunning his only living relative, underpaying his clerk and refusing to acknowledge the plight of the poor… but will timely visits from the Ghosts of Christmases Past, Present and Future change his miserly ways before it’s too late?
Performed by a multi-talented cast in The Pantaloons’ own inimitable, hilarious and moving style, this show features live music, audience interaction and absolutely no humbug (there may be some humbug). hedinghamcastle.co.uk
Q Everyone loves the character Buddy for his sunny outlook on life – are you someone who looks for life’s positives?
A I like to think I am a positive person. I love Buddy’s outlook on life and I’m looking forward to getting to know Buddy even more as I play him.
Q Has Christmas changed for you since becoming a dad?
A Christmas for me has always been about family even more so since becoming a dad. I love Christmas and my son makes it even more special.
Q Do you enjoy popping into Colchester?
A Colchester is a great place to live. I love the city centre as there’s always so much to do. Colchester during the summer months is incredible with all the co ee shops and Castle Park.

TALKS Money
Essex’s Gemma Bird on how she became a voice for financial prudence, Christmas savings and changing mindsets
At the time of writing, the UK was waiting with bated breath for Rachel Reeves to announce her first Budget, with many – businesses especially –wary of what the future may hold. Perhaps the Chancellor of the Exchequer should find some time to sit down with Gemma Bird and discuss finances with the Essex mum of two – after all, last summer Gemma did the same with then PM, Rishi Sunak. “It was a real pinch me moment,” Gemma nods. “At the same time, I wasn’t nervous, which is really strange. I just went in and spoke to him like a normal person. But that is what I am like. I have always treated people the same. I treat everyone with respect, I hear their views, and I just wanted to have a chat with him about my views. Everyone has a di erent opinion in life and that is what makes the world go round. My views and opinions were di erent to his, but it was definitely an amazing achievement that I got to do something like that.”
It certainly shows how far the ‘Money Mum’ has come. After years of working multiple jobs at once, from picking mushrooms to working as an estate agent, Gemma never earned more than £25k a year, yet managed to pay o her £225k mortgage. To achieve this, Gemma had to come up with some careful and creative methods of saving every penny and consequently the thought occurred to her that others may be interested in this too – and she was right.
“I started my account in 2020 just before lockdown. It wasn’t that I really decided to share my methods, it is just who I am as a person,” she explains. “Money Mum is my essence who I am throughout. I just love to save money, and I wanted to make deals online cool again. I wanted to empower other women to know that you don’t have to have all the designer things and keep up with people. I think social media is all about showing o what you have got, but people only really show the good stu , like holidays abroad to the Maldives. That is great and lovely, but let’s also share a 2-for-1 in Tesco as well. Let’s make that cool again!
“Money Mum was not the original name of the account,” she adds. “The original name was BirdWatchingFour – we are a family of four and I am Gemma Bird. People started calling me Money Mum and I loved the name. It is super catchy and being entrepreneurial I thought I could brand that. As I am good with money, I thought I could make a career out of this.”
The facts speak for themselves. Gemma now regularly shares money-saving tips and promotes her ‘No Spend Day’ and ‘Make Money Day’ to her loyal followers. As her platform has continued to grow, she has partnered with numerous notable brands including Amazon, Pampers, Tesco and McDonalds. Gemma’s first book Money Mum O cial: Save Yourself Happy published in January 2022 and became a Sunday Times bestseller, with follow up The Money Journal being a huge success too. Finances – the Budget aside – have been a constant in the news, especially since Covid, so Gemma’s advice has never been more crucial. “I do believe money is a mindset,” she says. “I think anyone can change their
spending habits. It is di erent if you are already cutting back on everything and you are not physically earning enough, and you have cut back on absolutely everything you can then that is di erent. But if you are one of these people that you are dipping into your overdraft every month, then money is a mindset. It is all the little things that add up. Every time you are spending £10, that soon adds up to £100 or £200. It is all about looking at all your bills and living within your means. That is something that I have always done. We all want the best house, nice holidays, a nice car. I am all for that. I have worked all my life and saved to be in a good financial position. I do think money is such a mindset and it is not only for rich people. You can earn a lot and still have bad money management. It is so important we teach the young about money management.” This sensible approach can start right now as the festive period kicks into gear.
“With Christmas, set a budget and stick to it”
“I think with Christmas, set a budget and stick to it. Things like not buying for Uncle Terry who you only see once a year. I think it’s a good idea, if it’s a large family, to say to all the adults, shall we just buy for the kids or we just buy for one person each and have a budget for each. Whatever is within your budget and means. Also, with Christmas it is just one day, you haven’t got to buy 80 million things of food. You can eat one roast dinner and one dessert. How many times do you get the bu et out and nobody eats it? Cut down on that, maybe just have some cheese and biscuits and chocolates for the evening if people want them. My partner and I have sometimes agreed to just buy for the kids, especially if they are younger, like 5 and under. I had a budget for one year of £20 and went to the pound shop and bought some little bits from there. They don’t realise it; it is just about how many things they have under
the tree. Some kids are all about quantity not quality when they are a certain age. So, it is definitely about not getting too stressed and not buying for absolutely everyone. If you can’t do it, you can’t do it.”
Gemma loves Christmas in Essex, but this year will be slightly di erent. “I’ve got a couple of places I love to go to, the walks, Brentwood Walley Park, I think that’s really like Christmassy at Christmas,” she smiles. “I also love going down to Southend and just having a drive along the seafront and seeing all the lights and even walking along the seafront when it is absolutely freezing cold. I really, really enjoy that. Another place I love going is Colchester Zoo at Christmas. I think that’s really, really pretty, and Marsh Farm and the Christmas event there. Also, the garden centres, because that’s free activities. And the kids love seeing the lights.
“But this is the first year at Christmas that we are actually going away,” she adds. “We’re surprising the kids because we’ve been married 10 years, my husband is 50 in December, and it’s Christmas. So instead of doing something for our 10-year wedding anniversary and Adam’s 50th year and buying for Christmas, we are going to Florida as a holiday for all those special things combined in one. Again, saving a bit of money because it’s three in one and we haven’t told the kids yet, it’s going to be a surprise. It’s part of their Christmas presents.”
As to the future, Gemma’s hopes and dreams come down to one thing. “Really, you know, just being happy, seeing my friends, and that’s really it. I think that’s the main thing, trying to find more contentment is really, really important as well.”

Be part of the ‘Lighting of the Chalice’ and become immersed in pomp and pageantry, as The Mediaeval Baebes’ torch-lit procession wends its way with song and dance to Chelmsford Cathedral on Monday 9th December.
The Mediaeval Baebes bring ‘The Ceremony’ to Chelmsford Cathedral this Christmas
“BRING A DRUM, A LANTERN, OR DRESS UP AND FROLIC"
Concert goers are invited to join in and enhance the procession however they may enjoy. Bring a drum, a lantern, or dress up and frolic, as the illuminated procession sets the tone for a delightful evening of musical magic to come.
Celebrating the festive season, ‘The Ceremony’ will bring a remarkable evening of joyous music, dance and theatre. With harmonious vocals accompanied by a truly unique collection of exotic and period instruments; carols, traditional folksongs and innovative settings of ancient romantic poetry will be revealed in beguiling choral music.
Traditionally this is a time for reflection and celebration, and the origins and folklore behind the Chalice, songs and lyrics will be cheekily uncovered in captivating storytelling. Further exalting the spirit of Christmas, the Mediaeval Baebes are delighted to announce that their new compositions will be presented during the concert too.
A medieval Christmas was a time of coming together, when elaborate processions and pantomimes were enjoyed by all. The Medieval Baebes’ Christmas concert continues to observe some of these historic customs and traditions, and they are seamlessly included in their performances, music and costumes.
A tradition that is still celebrated today is Wassailing, an orchard-based drinking ceremony that took place to ensure a plentiful apple harvest. Collecting alcohol in a large chalice that was frequently decorated with holly and ivy, partygoers would not leave until the chalice was empty. And, viewed as a symbol of connection and community, the chalice is often still used to create a sense of unity and shared experience regardless of era or faith. As a nod to this vessel
of communal jubilation, ‘The Ceremony’ of this year’s Mediaeval Baebes experience will commence with ‘The Lighting of the Chalice’. The Mediaeval Baebes are one of the most successful female-led, early music and folk ensembles in Europe. Over the years, the Mediaeval Baebes have released 11 studio albums and won an Ivor Novello Award for their performance on the BBC serialisation ‘The Virgin Queen’. They have also received two Emmy nominations and a Royal Television Society award as the featured artist alongside composer Martin Phipps, for the TV theme tune of ITV’s hit show ‘Victoria’.
In 2023 The Mediaeval Baebes collaboration with Orbital’s ‘Ringa Ringa’ enjoyed number 6 status in the album charts. And, their unique siren call was invited to collaborate with TikTok lockdown sensation The Wellermen, as part of their ‘Explorations’ remix album.
Join the Mediaeval Baebes and be immersed in glorious merriment. Tickets are now available from mediaevalbaebes.com at a cost of £28.50 each and £13 for a child

orteo, one of Cirque du Soelil’s most enchanting productions, is set to open at London’s famed Royal Albert Hall in January 2025. A wholly unique production with a stage that splits the venue into two halves, the show first premiered in Montreal in April 2005, and has since amazed over 11 million spectators, in 22 countries, on four continents. Corteo will be presented at the Royal Albert Hall from 9th January. Corteo, which means cortege in Italian, is a joyous procession, a festive parade imagined by a clown. The show brings together the passion of the actor with the grace and power of the acrobat to plunge the audience into a theatrical world of fun, comedy and spontaneity situated in a mysterious space between heaven and earth.
The clown’s dreamlike imagination pictures his own funeral taking place in a carnival atmosphere, watched over by quietly caring angels. Juxtaposing the large with the small, the ridiculous with the tragic and the magic of perfection with the charm of imperfection, the show highlights the strength and fragility of the clown, as well as his wisdom and kindness, to illustrate the portion of humanity that is within each of us. The music turns lyrical and playful carrying Corteo through a timeless celebration in which illusion teases reality.

In a Cirque du Soleil first, the stage is central in the arena and divides the venue into two, with each half of the audience facing the other half, giving a unique perspective not only of the show, but also a performer’s eye view of the audience. Corteo is also the heaviest show that Cirque du Soleil has brought to the Royal Albert Hall, suspending a massive 67
Cirque du Soleil started its much-loved annual residency at the Royal Albert Hall in 1996, and is now a staple of the entertainment calendar in London, as the famous venue becomes a permanent big top for over two months each year.

Frank Charles BEM has dedicated the last two decades to bringing some Christmas cheer for sick children in hospital and supporting homeless people in need. As the founder of Frank Charles Give a Gift Appeal (FCGAGA), Frank has tirelessly brought happiness to young patients over Christmas since 2004, delivering thoughtful gifts to those who cannot be home for the festive period, and 2024 is the tenth year that Haslers Foundation has supported the Appeal and it is now a much loved tradition by the Haslers team. suitable for children from newborns to 12 and beyond, and as always, the gifts will be taken to the Acorn Ward at Whipps Cross Hospital. The dedicated nursing team shares them with the young patients, spreading the festive cheer at a time when it is especially hard for families to be separated as
envisioned by Frank when he founded FCGAGA nearly 20 years ago.
In addition to his impactful work with FCGAGA, Frank also leads Feed the Streetz, an initiative focused on providing food, clothing, and other essentials to homeless and vulnerable individuals.
Especially during the winter months, when the cold hits hardest, Feed the Streetz provides critical relief to those facing hardship. This year, Haslers team members have joined in to support Feed the Streetz alongside FCGAGA, donating much-needed warm clothing for those in need. From cosy coats to durable winter gear, Haslers’ contributions will help provide comfort to many during the most challenging season of the year.
Jon O’Shea, Haslers’ chairman, speaks highly of Frank Charles and his unceasing commitment to helping others. “Frank is an amazing man. His tireless fundraising is an inspiration to us all. Haslers are proud to partner with Frank and look forward to supporting him in the future.”

FEAST Festive
Essex’s Maldon Salt o er three courses to add a tasty twist to your Christmas dinner table
• 450g mixed mushrooms (chestnut, shittake, oyster), torn into pieces
• ½ small butternut squash, peeled and diced into 2cm cubes
• 50g chestnuts, crumbled
• Small handful sage leaves, shredded
• A little grated nutmeg
• 30g dried cranberries
• Pinch of Maldon Garlic Sea Salt
• 1 x 320g sheet of pu pastry
• Milk or egg to glaze
METHOD
1 Preheat the oven to 200c.
2 To a frying pan add 1 tbsp of olive olive plus a knob of butter and allow it to melt. When foaming, add the sliced onions and a pinch of Maldon Sea Salt. Fry these on a low heat for at least 10 minutes until they are soft and translucent. Then add the soft brown sugar and continue to cook for another 5 minutes until the onions have gone sticky, soft and caramelized. Set aside to cool.
3 Place all the mushrooms onto a baking tray along with the diced butternut squash. Then drizzle with the remaining olive oil and some salt and pepper. Place into the hot oven and roast for 25 minutes until the squash is tender and the mushrooms are golden. Set the tray aside to cool.
4 Once the vegetables have cooled you can make the filling. Simply mix in a bowl with the caramelized onions, chestnuts, sage, nutmeg, dried cranberries and Maldon Garlic Sea Salt.
5 Unroll the pastry onto a baking tray and then pile the filling down the middle in a line. Then roll the pastry over to seal it. Use the egg wash to seal it down, and then take the two open ends and join them together, sealing them as well. Egg wash the whole outside of the wreath and then place into the fridge for 30 mins.
6 Once the wreath has chilled, place it into the preheated oven and bake for 3540 minutes until it is golden and crisp on the outside. Cool slightly before serving – can be served warm or cold.
Christmas Spiced Orange Roast Duck
Serves: 6 people
Prep time: 15 minutes
Cook time: 2 hours 10 minutes
INGREDIENTS
• 1 x whole duck (roughly 2.2kg)
• Maldon Smoked Sea Salt
• 500g Maris piper potatoes
• 5 x banana shallots, peeled and halved
• 6 x clementines
• 2 x bay leaves
• 1 cinnamon stick
• 1 tbsp honey
• 50g Seville orange marmalade
METHOD
1 Heat the oven to 180C. Pat the skin of the duck dry and rub 1 tsp of the smoked salt into the skin. Place the bird breast side down in a roasting tin with the shallots and roast for 1 hour.
2 While this is roasting, peel and halve any large potatoes. Place them in a pan of water and boil them for 8 minutes, or until a knife can be inserted. Then tip the potatoes into a colander in the sink and allow them to steam. Shake the colander a little to flu up the potatoes and then set aside.
3 After 1 hour, drain o all the fat, reserving it to cook your potatoes in. Then carefully lift and turn the duck in the tray. Surround it with 3 clementines, halved, the cinnamon and bay and return to the oven for a further 1 hour (keep watching and basting).
4 Meanwhile, roast the potatoes in the duck fat adding a good pinch of Maldon Smoked Sea Salt.
5 Before the end of the cooking, add the juice of the 3 remaining clementines to a small pan and simmer until reduced by half, then add the honey and marmalade. Brush the duck with the sticky glaze and return to the oven for the final 10 minutes.
6 Serve the duck with the roast potatoes, braised red cabbage and sprouts.
Spiced Apple Frangipane Tart
Serves: 8 people
Prep time: 35 minutes, plus chilling time
Cook time: 1 hour
INGREDIENTS
For the pastry
• 160g plain flour
• 50g icing sugar
• 120g unsalted butter, cold and cubed
• 1 egg yolk
• 1 tbsp of cold water (more if needed)
For the frangipane
• 130g unsalted butter, room temp
• 150g caster sugar
• Pinch of Smoked Maldon Sea Salt
• 2 eggs, plus 1 egg yolk
• 2 tsp vanilla extract
• 1 tsp ground cinnamon
• ½ tsp ground nutmeg
• 150g ground almonds
• 45g plain flour
• 2 large apples, cored and thinly sliced with skin-on
• Icing sugar, to serve
METHOD
1 Start by making the pastry. In a food processor add the plain flour and icing sugar. Then add the cold, cubed butter and pulse until it resembles fine breadcrumbs. Next add the egg yolk and cold water. Pulse again until the pastry starts to come together. If it looks a little dry, add a splash more water.
2 Bring the pastry together with your hands and tip out of the food processor. Knead very gently and then wrap in clingfilm in a flat disc shape and put into the fridge to chill for 30 mins.
3 After 30 mins, remove the pastry from the fridge and then roll it out on a lightly floured work surface. Roll a large circle around 2cm in thickness and then use your rolling
pin to lift the pastry and drape over a 23cm fluted tart tin. Gently press in the corners and up the sides, leaving some overhang at the top. Use a fork to lightly prick the base of the tart. Then place this back into the fridge for another 30 mins.
4 Preheat the oven to 180c.
5 After 30 minutes, remove the chilled pastry case from the fridge. Scrunch up some baking paper and then line the pastry with this and some baking beans. Place into the preheated oven to blind bake. Bake it for 15 minutes, then remove the beans and paper and return to the oven for an additional 5 minutes until the pastry feels chalky and lightly golden in colour. Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly.
6 While the pastry is blind baking, make the frangipane. Using an electric hand whisk, place the softened butter, sugar and pinch of Maldon Smoked
Sea Salt in a large bowl and whisk together for 2-3 minutes until pale and flu y. Then add the eggs, yolks, and vanilla and whisk again. Finally add the cinnamon, nutmeg, ground almonds and flour, and whisk until combined.
7 When the pastry case has cooled slightly, take a small, serrated knife and carefully trim o the excess pastry so you have a nice smooth line around the top. Dust o any pastry remains.
8 Spoon the frangipane filling into the pastry case and smooth out with a palette knife. Then arrange the apple slices on the top and lightly press into the filling.
9 Place the tart back into the oven for around 40-45 minutes until the apples are golden and the frangipane is pu ed up and golden brown too.
10 Remove from the oven and allow to cool before dusting with icing sugar and serving.

EMBRACING TRADITION
Why turkey dinner is synonymous with Christmas – and why Copas will ensure the perfect meal
For many families across the UK, Christmas simply wouldn’t be Christmas without a turkey dinner.
The scent of a beautifully roasted bird, the gathering of loved ones, and the joy of sharing a meal together have become integral to the holiday season.
From its flavour to its iconic place on the festive table, turkey is more than just a meal: it’s a symbol of Christmas itself.
Although it wasn’t always the British holiday staple, by the Victorian era, turkey
had become a Christmas favourite, in part thanks to Charles Dickens choosing it as a symbol of Scrooge’s redemption in A Christmas Carol. By then, it had become a treat associated with the best of what Christmas had to o er: a feast that was generous, delicious, and special. Today, turkey is still the centrepiece of holiday celebrations. But what is it that makes turkey such a timeless choice? Perhaps it’s the festive scale of it – perfect for carving and sharing
among family and friends. Turkey’s mild yet rich flavour complements the season’s accompaniments, from roasted vegetables to cranberry sauce, bread sauce and stu ng, bringing together the best flavours of winter.
Beyond taste and tradition, the modern appeal of turkey also lies in its versatility and high nutritional value. It’s rich in protein, lower in fat than many red meats, and packed with essential nutrients like iron, zinc, and B vitamins. Families today appreciate it as a deliciously festive yet health-conscious choice that balances indulgence with nutrition.
At Copas Traditional Turkeys, they’ve taken the experience a step further by making sure every bird is raised to the highest welfare standards. Their free-range turkeys are raised in fields in Berkshire, allowed to mature naturally, hand-plucked and game hung to ensure the best possible taste and texture. This attention to quality means that every bite embodies the care and tradition behind it, creating a meal that’s truly worthy of the holiday season.
This Christmas, as you gather around the table, remember that a turkey dinner is about more than food; it’s a reminder of the joy, warmth, and tradition that make the holidays so special. After all, turkey dinner is more than just a meal – it’s the very essence of Christmas.
Order your Christmas turkey now on the Copas website for home delivery, for pick up at their farm in Cookham or for collection at one of their Click & Collect partners in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, London, Oxfordshire, Hertfordshire and Surrey.

Life organises around light. This theme is explored in various philosophical, scientific, and spiritual contexts, but how much of that natural light do we get round here? Certainly not enough for optimal (or even sub-optimal) functioning of our bodies.
Theoretical biophysicist Dr Fritz Albert Popp concluded that the function of our entire metabolism is dependent on light. He introduced the concept of biophotons (ultraweak photon emissions that are involved in cellular communication and regulation) that play a crucial role in maintaining health and potentially influencing genetic activity. He suggested that, for example, cancer could result from a breakdown in the coherent emission of biophotons.
And how does one increase that coherent emission of biophotons in their sun-deprived cells? By consuming good quality, unprocessed foods, and by going outside in the sun, exposing as much skin surface as possible, or by using red-light (photobiomodulation)

The importance of biophotons and how you can stimulate them to improve your wellbeing
therapy which is in the correct spectrum of light. This will increase biophoton emissions by stimulating cellular activity, such as ATP production, and reducing oxidative stress.
Neurosurgeon Jack Kruse posits that light, particularly red and near-infrared (blue light is toxic), stimulates the mitochondria’s electron transport chain, leading to improved energy production at the cellular level. This is seen as critical for health optimisation and potentially reversing or mitigating chronic diseases.
Dr Kruse also suggests that all surgeries should take place under red light. Likewise, and already over ten years ago, renowned biophysicist Tiina Karu was suggesting in her work that photobiomodulation should be considered as a drug equivalent.
Photobiomodulation has been used in clinical practice for over 50 years, and its action mechanisms on cellular and molecular levels have been studied for over 40 years. It has been used in treating healing-resistant wounds and ulcers, in spinal cord injuries and nervous system injuries, and in pain management. It is used, for instance, in treating Parkinson’s, as it prevents mitochondrial dysfunction and dopamine loss, in stimulating stem cells post myocardial infarction (heart attack), without causing any cytotoxic e ects, as well as in depression and anxiety treatment.
We should, of course, prioritise exposure to natural light and turn to photobiomodulation therapies to only compensate for the deficiencies in modern lifestyles and unfavourable locations. And, especially when paired with grounding (or earthing), an increasing number of studies show that it can work wonders in reducing inflammation, improving bone density, enhancing cognitive function, improving sleep, increasing energy levels, and boosting collagen, among many other benefits.
Rock Mill Retreat, in the heart of the Peak District, o ers facilities including medical-grade photobiomodulation therapy, saunas, photon lights, gym, PEMF (pulsed electromagnetic field therapy) mats, inversion table, and much more – and could be just what your body needs in the run up to Christmas.

JO LAMBELL
SCENE GREEN
Jo Lambell , founder of Essex-based Beards & Daisies, on the joy of plants over the festive season
We get into the Christmas spirit a whole year early!” smiles Jo Lambell when asked when they start preparing. “It all kicks off with our amazing buying team scouting out beautiful trade shows for the latest finds. We then bring it all together with a special brand book made just for our Christmas collections. Plus, we keep an eye on trends and gather inspiration well ahead of time to make sure we’re always in tune with what our customers love.” Absolutely finds out more and gets into the spirit...
Q Is the Christmas collection enjoyable to create and work on?
A Absolutely! We have so much fun working on the Christmas collection. It’s all about getting into the festive spirit early with mood boards, visuals, and a whole lot of Pinterest inspiration. Since our business was born out of a love for gifting, we really pour that passion into creating pieces that bring people together – whether it’s family, friends, or a celebration. Plus, our collection covers it all, from the sustainable
magic of our artificial plants to gifts that we believe are the best around. Whether you’re after something small and thoughtful or something luxurious, we’ve got you covered.
We’re also really special when it comes to gifting, offering beautiful gift cards and delightful add-ons from small independent companies to luxe options, which you can easily add to your cart at checkout.
Q What festive plants will you be offering?
A This year’s Christmas collection is absolutely gorgeous! We’ve got everything from the charming Christmas Cactus and Scandi-style Norfolk Island Pine to the elegant Hellebore and festive Winter Berry garland. Our much-loved wreaths are back, too, and they’re perfect for dressing up any front door this season. And don’t miss our DIY mini Christmas tree kits – they’re a B&D favourite, adding some fun to your Christmas decorations.
Q Do you have a favourite plant to decorate your own home?
A I’m all about the Christmas Cactus for my holiday table – it adds such a lovely touch of colour and feels just right for the season. I’m a big fan of using repetition
when decorating; placing a few of the same plant across the table or even around the house really creates that “wow” effect. I can’t resist a beautiful wreath on the front door, either – it’s such a welcoming touch. And, of course, I always include a Norfolk Pine. It’s perfect for that classic, evergreen look that never goes out of style.
Q Why do you think a houseplant makes a wonderful gift?
A Houseplants make such a wonderful gift because they bring a little piece of nature indoors, creating a calming and uplifting atmosphere. They’re not just a present for the moment – they continue to grow and thrive, reminding the recipient of your thoughtful gesture long after the holidays.
Plus, there’s a plant for everyone. Whether it’s a low-maintenance option for a newbie, a statement piece for the seasoned plant lover, or even a festive touch like a mini Christmas tree, houseplants add a personal and meaningful touch to any space. It’s the gift that keeps on giving!
Q What originally inspired the launch of Beards & Daisies – and why the name?
A The journey to founding Beards & Daisies has been all about passion and a love for
Beards & Daisies’ Christmas collection includes this Winter Berry Frost Artificial Garland
plants that started in my childhood. Growing up in a family where each sibling had their own tree, my apple tree was my little slice of nature, sparking my lifelong love for greenery. After studying at Capel Manor College, I moved to London at 18, and that’s when I realised my small apartment could really use some sprucing up! Living near Columbia Road Flower Market deepened my love for plants, but I couldn’t help but giggle as I watched people struggling to lug giant plants on public transport. I thought, “There has to be a better way to do this”... That lightbulb moment hit me hard when I found myself in the same situation, awkwardly carrying a 6ft Monstera on the tube. Fast forward to 2015 – I took a leap of faith and launched Beards & Daisies after a voluntary redundancy, starting off as a flower delivery service. With my handson experience and a philosophy that’s all about learning from plant mishaps, I’ve turned it into a go-to destination for indoor plants.
Now, as we approach our 10th anniversary, it’s amazing to see how our playful approach to plants continues to inspire others. With our 100% recyclable or compostable packaging, my Plant Folk team and I are all about spreading the plant love while keeping things green and fun. Whether you’re just starting out or you’ve got a jungle at home, we’re here to make your plant journey enjoyable.
urban connections, making it an inspiring environment to work in. As the city continues to grow, we’re surrounded by an ever-expanding talent pool that helps us innovate and thrive. It truly feels like the best of both worlds.
Q How do you help newbies to the world of houseplants?
A We’re all about helping newbies dive into the wonderful world of houseplants. First off, there’s my book, The Unkillables, which is packed with tips and tricks to make plant care easy and fun. We’ve also designed our website to be user-friendly, guiding you through your plant journey.
Whether you’re after a prayer plant or a majestic palm, we believe there’s a perfect plant for everyone. Our loyal customers often share their experiences, and we love hearing how they’ve grown from newbies to plant pros. Plus, we regularly conduct surveys to gather feedback and ensure we’re meeting the needs of everyone, whether you’re just starting out or looking to expand your collection. And don’t worry about the divas of the plant world – everyone has a little learning curve, so don’t let them put you off! We’re here to support you every step of the way.
Q Why has Essex been the perfect place for your business?
A First off, its proximity to London gives us great access to the city while still enjoying a more relaxed atmosphere. Plus, it’s been an incredible place to draw from a talented pool of employees who share our passion for plants.
The beautiful setting of Essex offers a lovely balance between rural charm and
Q What are your plans for 2025?
A We have some exciting plans on the horizon. We’re diving deeper into exploring retail opportunities, which will allow us to reach even more plant lovers. Product development is also a big focus, as we’re planning to introduce new product categories that we know our customers will love.
And here’s the cherry on top: we’ll be launching a fresh line of flowers, adding even more beauty to our offerings. With our office expanding, we’re also looking to grow our team, bringing in more talented folks to help us on this amazing journey. It’s going to be a fantastic year ahead.
Q Will you have much time to relax over Christmas? And what makes the perfect Christmas for you?
A Well, it’s always a bit of a juggling act! But for me, the perfect Christmas is all about family time – everyone gathers at our place, and it’s a blast. I love going all out with the decor, creating a cosy, festive atmosphere. Hosting is such a joy, especially when we’re all in matching PJs – it just adds to the fun. Even though it’s a busy time for the business, I find it incredibly enjoyable. There’s something magical about the holiday hustle, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Winter wellness at home: elevate your well-being with an indoor pool
As winter sets in and the days grow shorter, the urge to retreat into the cosy confines of our homes becomes stronger. The chilly weather can limit outdoor activities; however, this season also presents a unique opportunity to focus on wellness and self-care. What better way to enhance your well-being than with an indoor pool? Transforming your home into a winter wellness retreat can rejuvenate your mind and body, allowing you to embrace the festive season while promoting a healthy lifestyle.
Indoor pools are not merely luxurious amenities but sanctuaries offering numerous health benefits. Regular swimming can provide an excellent cardiovascular workout, improving heart health and boosting circulation. As the temperatures drop, many people may become less active, which can lead to feelings of lethargy and even seasonal depression. An indoor pool allows you to maintain a consistent exercise routine, ensuring you stay physically fit and mentally sharp throughout the winter.
Moreover, the act of swimming itself is a powerful stress reliever. The rhythmic nature of swimming can be meditative, allowing you to clear your mind and focus on the present moment. Immersing yourself in warm water can create a soothing environment that helps to alleviate anxiety and tension, making it an ideal way to unwind after a long day. Consider integrating additional elements into your indoor pool environment to enhance a serene atmosphere that encourages relaxation and rejuvenation. Adding a sauna or steam room can further elevate your self-care experience. These features promote relaxation, detoxification and improved respiratory health.
In addition to the physical and mental benefits, investing in an indoor pool can signifi cantly enhance your quality of life. It offers you the luxury of year-round swimming, free from the constraints of unpredictable weather, providing an oasis of calm away from your busy life in the comfort of your own home.
As the colder months approach, we must rethink how we care for ourselves. By creating a winter wellness retreat at home with an indoor pool, you’re not just enhancing your lifestyle, but investing in your health and happiness. Origin understands the importance of such spaces and is dedicated to bringing your vision to life. Embrace the season and make your indoor pool the centre of your winter wellness journey.
TIMELESS APPEAL
The Essex Kitchen Design Company: why they offer inspiring Shaker kitchen design to last a lifetime
Located in the beautiful village of Clavering, Essex, this bespoke shaker inframe kitchen by The Essex Kitchen Design Company is a masterclass in blending traditional shaker furniture with modern luxury and architecture. As specialists in both Shaker and In-frame Shaker kitchens, Alex and the team bring a level of personal service, knowledge, attention to detail, and technical expertise that sets them apart in the Essex luxury kitchen landscape.
Director of Design, Alex Kraus, has been designing high end bespoke shaker kitchens for 10 years and prides himself in providing their valued clients with a highly detailed technical knowledge of Shaker kitchens. This knowledge can then be translated into kitchen designs which are not only visually stunning, but use the bespoke nature of the product to provide a unique design for every
client, specifi cally tailored to their individual space and architecture.
Their Shaker kitchens are manufactured to the highest quality by their joinery partner who have been manufacturing bespoke shaker kitchens since 1864. This ensures the highest level of quality and traditional British joinery for kitchens which will last through generations.
One of the standout features of this Clavering kitchen is the bespoke walkin pantry, which sits within a recessed area to the side of the kitchen area. This pantry is thoughtfully designed for maximum functionality and created to fit this space perfectly. A charming feature of the pantry is a custom-built ladder, crafted in solid walnut and runs along a bespoke rail the full width of the pantry. “The ladder not only maximises vertical storage but adds personality to the space,” Alex explains.
The large island serves as the centrepiece and main focal point for this impactful design, offering both a
functional workspace and social hub for the kitchen. The recessed Bora hob sits flush with the worktop and useful food prep sink is accompanied by a brushed brass Quooker boiling water tap to blend the aesthetic with the handles on this kitchen design.
To make the most of the available space, The Essex Kitchen Design Company incorporated floor-to-ceiling cabinetry, creating a seamless look that enhances the kitchen’s spaciousness. This tall cabinetry is equipped with internal dovetail walnut drawers, adjustable shelves, and pull-out larders, all illuminated with integrated lighting to ensure that every item is easily accessible.
Handles are a small detail which can completely change the look and feeling of Shaker kitchen furniture. In this design they chose brushed brass to add contrast and warmth to the design. The handles are “Knurled”, which provides a tactile material which aides grip when opening the oversized taller doors.
PERSONAL SERVICE FROM CONCEPT TO COMPLETION
At The Essex Kitchen Design Company, clients have the reassurance of working with a single point of contact throughout the entire process. From initial consultation to final installation, Alex and his team provide a fully project managed service, ensuring a smooth and stressfree experience. “We take care of everything, coordinating each stage of the project to deliver a seamless result,” Alex explains. “If the kitchen is part of a larger renovation, we also liaise directly with the client’s chosen building contractor, ensuring the design integrates perfectly with the wider project.”
This Clavering kitchen is a true example of The Essex Kitchen Design Company’s commitment to creating bespoke, highly functional, and beautifully crafted spaces. As
experts in Shaker and in-frame Shaker kitchens, with over 30 years of combined experience, the team brings technical precision for discerning clients looking for a bespoke kitchen which is of the highest quality.
Located in the charming village of Stock, directly opposite The Bear pub, their inspiring boutique showroom is the perfect place to experience their kitchens and discuss your ideas. Their clients often combine visiting them with a meal at one of the village's famous pubs. Please visit their website for further design inspiration and they would love to hear from you if you are planning a kitchen project and want to work with a company who holds quality, professionalism and personal service at the heart of everything we do.

The kitchen truly is the heart of the home at Christmas – but what trends can we expect to see in 2025? One expert shows the way
From rustic farmhouses to contemporary abodes, bespoke kitchen specialists, The Main Company, design some of the most unique kitchens for their customers. As we head into 2025, Alex Main, director of The Main Company, shares his insights into upcoming trends, including the everlasting popularity of green, a more refined approach to wood and a touch of fluting.
“Wood is being embraced in the home and in the kitchen more than ever before.
From cabinet fronts to accent details, homeowners are steering towards a lighter, more refined look with wood,” Alex says. “Part of the desire to create a more natural looking space, we have found that this elegant, more refined approach to incorporating wood is following through into other areas of the home.
“Green is still one of the most popular colour choices for kitchens,” Alex adds. “With a slight tendency towards darker, moodier palettes, this shade is likely to remain prevalent throughout next year as well. Whilst the darker tones are the most
popular, we have noticed a lean towards more uncommon shades recently – from bolder olive tones to more jewel-based teals and emeralds.”
Reena Simon, designer and content creator, designed an exclusive kitchen collection with The Main Company this year. “There’s a noticeable trend towards what I have seen described as ‘quiet luxury’ in kitchen design,” she says. “This trend also aligns with the broader movement towards sensorial design, where the focus is on creating environments that engage the senses in a calming and subtle way. People are seeking kitchens that offer a serene, almost spa-like atmosphere, achieved through a blend of textures, soft palettes, and minimalistic details. Additionally, there’s a growing desire for personalisation and uniqueness in design. Rather than opting for cookie-
cutter solutions, homeowners are embracing bespoke elements that reflect their individual tastes and lifestyles.
“From glass doors to cabinetry fronts, fluting has become tremendously popular,” Reena continues. “Perfect when paired with a more refined approach to light wood, different fluted or grooved details add a sought-after, unique touch to kitchens, creating a more lived-in and individual feel.
“The desire to create and make unique design statements has remained an important factor in kitchen design this year, in particular when it comes to different patterns and materials. Homeowners are looking to add personality and individuality through a number of new and exciting ways, such as hessian-effect materials on cabinet fronts, opting for wallpaper in-fill panels or even having hand painted specialist kitchen panels. We expect to see an increase in these more personal touches next year, allowing homeowners to really put their stamp on their kitchens.”

Hurley, of Hurley’s Christmas Tree Farm in Battlesbridge, on how they can spruce up your festive decorations
Q How long has Hurley's Farm been growing Christmas trees? What’s going on for your 10 year anniversary at the new farm site?
A We are the original real Christmas Tree Farm of Essex and have been growing pumpkins, squash and Christmas trees since the 1950s. We are a family run farm now in the third generation of Christmas Tree growers, and all of our children are actively involved in the growing operation at our farm.
For our 10 year anniversary at our new farm location, we are planning to open up our tree fields to allow any adventurous customers to walk amongst many thousands of our beautiful Christmas trees to choose their perfect real family tree direct from our growing fields. Following in the footsteps of many stars and celebrities that love our trees and choosing them this way, a la Griswolds or not!
Q How many different varieties of trees will you be selling this year?
A Hurley's Farm currently grow over 10 main varieties of real Christmas tree, across nearly 100 acres of beautiful Essex farmland. We always have at least 5 varieties on sale to the public, including beautiful favourites like blue Noble Fir and super fragrant Fraser & Korean Fir.
Q What’s the advantage of buying direct from the grower?
A At our farm customers can walk amongst thousands of freshly cut trees that are all individually displayed to choose their perfect real tree. Quality and freshness are always our top priority, with very knowledgeable staff at hand to help with any questions. You will only get this at Hurley’s Christmas Tree Farm.
A Quality and freshness are always our top priority, with very knowledgeable staff at hand to help with any questions. All of our trees are supplied with detailed care labels. Most importantly after purchasing a fresh, real tree direct from a real tree farm, the next most important requisite is to please make sure it is placed only in a water holding stand and kept well topped up with clean, fresh water throughout the period, otherwise please keep away from direct heating sources as much as possible. Please recycle trees bought from us after Christmas at our farm, or through your local authority.
Q What does it mean that your trees are grown in accordance with the British Christmas Tree Growers environmental Code of Practice?
A All of our trees are grown to exceed the guidelines of BCTGA environmental Code of Practice. This means trees at our farm are always grown in a sustainable and environmentally responsible way. We always plant more trees than we harvest. Furthermore, at Hurley’s Christmas Tree Farm we go above and beyond this and actively encourage natural, local fauna and flora to thrive on our farm.

Increasingly more children are aware of the threat that global warming poses to our environment. While the impact of climate change is an issue that a ects everyone, it is important that both schools and parents arm their children with the knowledge and skills to address and tackle the impacts and the problems. Being positive action orientated and taking ownership of the individual choices we can all make to protect our world helps to reduce anxiety, and focus e orts on the small things we can take responsibility for.
At Dame Bradbury’s in Sa ron Walden, sustainability is built into everything we do by encouraging children to take local action in an age appropriate way, while also developing their sense of social responsibility within their local community.
GAME CHANGERS
The Head of STEAM at Dame Bradbury’s in Sa ron Walden on how they nurture nature’s protectors for the future
By AMIRA MITCHELL-KARAM
NURTURING STUDENTS WITH AN ENVIRONMENTAL CONSCIOUSNESS
School poses a fantastic opportunity for children to get involved directly with social and environmental causes they might be curious or passionate about.
At Dame Bradbury’s, we are proud to have been awarded the prestigious Eco-Schools Green Flag certification in recognition of our school-wide commitment to sustainable practices. The accreditation is awarded to schools that go above and beyond to make their environment as sustainable as possible.
Over the past year, pupils from our Reception to Year 6 formed an Eco Committee, where they identified three key focus areas for improvement within our school: reducing waste, encouraging
eco-friendly travel, and enhancing the sustainability of the school grounds.
The Eco Club has enabled children with a passion for the environment to lead on meaningful school-wide initiatives such as Cut your Carbon month, Energy Saving Week, Earth Day, as well as leading regular assemblies to remind their peers of the importance of living and acting sustainably. The children’s shared mission of looking after our planet has also popularised a school gardening club, where pupils have felt inspired to look after our greenhouse and flourishing school gardens.
LET’S
WALK TO SCHOOL
Why drive to school when you can walk? As part of our school mission to encourage more sustainable travel and lower our carbon footprint, our Eco Team organised a ‘Walk to School’ week in the
“We encourage children to take local action in an age appropriate way”
summer, which saw over 100 pupils take part. Sta greeted families at a central location in town, which allowed parents to drop o their children before work, helping to lower local air pollution by reducing the morning congestion on the main roads in Sa ron Walden.
Our teachers, children and families all enjoyed the fresh air, sunshine and exercise as part of the week-long eco initiative. The children, families (and some pets) also enjoyed the additional social aspect of walking to school together, which created a positive start to the day and encouraged older children to pair up with younger children to help them with the journey to school.
LEARNING ABOUT AIR QUALITY
Children are naturally very curious, and we are always impressed by our pupils’ eagerness to engage in environmental causes both in and out of school. Earlier this year, our Year 5 and 6 pupils had the opportunity to practice their environmental science investigation skills by taking part in the local Sa ron Walden Clean Air Project, which involved recording and analysing air quality at various locations around Sa ron Walden.
To aid in their investigations, teams of pupils very much enjoyed taking “plume flow” air quality monitoring devices around the town to analyse and compare air pollution in di erent places at di erent times. Children were excited to take part in the survey to learn more about the causes of air pollution in their own town, while others took their monitors along when venturing as far as Chelmsford, Cambridge and even Lapland.
From being able to understand the di erence between cooking with windows open or closed to comparing the air quality at night and during daytime, the monitors allowed the children to gain a fundamental understanding of the causes of air pollution, and a new perspective on the small changes needed to help reduce it.
These school initiatives help to nurture the spirit of protecting nature for future generations, and the students feel empowered to take action at a local level and understand how they too can play their part in improving and protecting their local environment and our planet as a whole, which helps to reduce feelings of anxiety and concern around the impacts of climate change.

Families across Essex are continuing to embrace the ‘Everyday Magic of Maths’
Launched to help Essex residents of all ages thrive in numeracy and inspire a love of learning, the Essex Year of Numbers initiative from Essex County Council (ECC) has been running since September 2023. To kick o the initiative, new research was commissioned by ECC which revealed that almost half of Essex parents surveyed do not feel confident when helping children with maths homework (44%1)2. To address this, ECC teamed up with celebrity maths expert, Bobby Seagull, to provide a series of fun and accessible tips that encouraged families to embrace the ‘Everyday Magic of Maths’. On the International Day of Maths itself (18th March 2024), Bobby shared some of his personal top tips on how to make maths more fun, and later
being delivered by teachers and HSBC’s dedicated financial education team to help school pupils learn the practical skills needed for real-life financial situations, such as money management, budgeting, borrowing, savings and fraud prevention.
For the sportier residents of Essex, The Cricket4Maths event brought together children and care home residents to enjoy an intergenerational game of cricket and be amongst the very first to see the original Venn bowling machine in action, introducing key maths concepts.
And Number Stacks Resource kits were distributed to schools to help children in developing their understanding of key maths skills.
ECC also partnered with the Mercury Theatre in Colchester to produce a lively new show for pupils aged 7 to 11-years-old. The new play, titled ‘No More Numbers’, visited 12 schools across Essex and enabled over 1,000 students to experience the wonders of maths.
During the October half-term, ECC invited families from across the county to participate in Halloween-themed maths activities at Essex Country Parks. Children embarked on a Monster Mysteries trail, solving puzzles and counting creatures to win exciting prizes.
surprised a group of young musicians by performing his very own bespoke maths rap at a ‘Count Me In’ DJ and music showcase event in Chelmsford.
Following the campaign launch with Bobby, ECC unveiled its green initiative, Eco Refill shops, in schools across Essex in collaboration with Pupils Profit. Toolkits were designed to inspire school children to create their own business plans, apply for job roles, and learn how to manage their very own business. So far, the Eco Refill project has helped pupils in nearly 40 primary schools across Essex and saved 1,700 plastic containers from going into landfill.
To make discussions around money less daunting and more fun for students aged 14 to 18-years-old, ECC joined forces with HSBC. A series of modules are
Commenting on the jam-packed year of events and activities, Councillor Tony Ball, Cabinet Member for Education Excellence, Lifelong Learning and Employability at ECC, said: “By integrating maths into fun activities and adventures for children we have successfully been able to tackle what we set out to do when we launched the campaign – enhancing numeracy skills and inspiring a lifelong passion for learning among children and young people in Essex. Across the year we have inspired the county’s residents to embrace the magic of maths and identify new and fun ways to strengthen numerical skills in their everyday lives.”

The all ROUNDER
Terence Ayres, Head of Saint Nicholas School in Harlow, on the many di erent facets that goes into teaching pupils how to learn
Q When people first visit Saint Nicholas, what kind of impression do you hope the school gives?
A I would imagine that the majority of adults who have been house hunting would have experienced walking into a property and knowing that this was the one! It isn’t always quantifiable, but there is a warmth, a quickening of breath and a feeling of euphoria, comparable to when the ‘wand chooses the wizard’ in Harry Potter. When prospective parents and their children walk through our doors and tour the school, I want them to leave with that feeling that this school is the very best place in which they can grow-up and learn.
Q You are dedicated to teaching pupils how to learn – how do you achieve this?
A While the academic core skills are at the heart of the school, Saint Nicholas
is dedicated to teaching pupils how to learn, instilling key learning skills, such as initiative, resilience, collaboration, teamwork and independent thinking. To achieve this goal, ‘Saint Nicks’, as it is a ectionately known, has a talented, committed and dedicated sta who know the pupils well, are passionate about teaching and learning, and who tailor the learning journey of each pupil so they can achieve to their own best; preparing them fully for the next phase of their lives.
Q How important is a pupil’s wellbeing to how they learn at Saint Nicholas?
A Hugely important, when pupils are happy and feel valued they are more prepared to step outside of their ‘comfort zone’ and explore new ideas and ways of thinking, which is fundamental to educational achievement.
TERENCE AYRES
“I STRONGLY BELIEVE THAT AN ENRICHING PROGRAMME IS KEY IN UNLOCKING PUPIL POTENTIAL”
At Saint Nicholas, we are fully committed to well-being and run numerous events throughout the year organised by our pastoral team and our mental health and well-being prefects. Recent events have included two well-being days where pupils were taken o timetable to enjoy numerous well-being activities, a colour run and, only last week, as part of our recent Men’s Health Week, hour-long workshops on well-being, run by a life coach.
Q What facilities do you have and what do these enable you to do?
A Set in 15 acres of stunningly beautiful grounds, Saint Nicholas has outstanding facilities that include specialist classrooms, science laboratories, technology areas, ICT rooms, a lower school library, a senior library and study centre, a state of the art theatre and drama studio, extensive playing fields, floodlit tennis courts, indoor arena, heated swimming pool, outdoor Forest School, mud kitchen and ecological exploration area and a magnificent sports hall. Without these outstanding facilities, we could not deliver the rich, engaging and challenging education that inspires our pupils to raise their sights and expectations, and ‘Strive to Better’.
Q Is what happens outside the classroom just as important as in, such as with outdoor learning?
A As a Head, I am passionate about extracurricular and outdoor learning and strongly
believe that an enriching programme is key in unlocking pupil potential. At Saint Nicholas, pupils enjoy Forest School, from pre-school up to Year 5, and in the seniors, pupils participate in numerous outdoor adventurous activities and residentials, and in DofE bronze and silver awards.
Our extensive extra-curricular programme provides numerous opportunities to develop new skills and passions. Extracurricular experiences range from ballet to boxing, dance to darts, and construction to cookery; experiences that help develop rounded and confident young people, who are not afraid of ‘having a go’ or trying something for the first time.
Q How key are sports to the school?
A As an avid sportsman myself, I am passionate about the benefits that participating in sport, in whatever capacity and whatever the ability, brings. For me personally, sport is a safe space for dealing with defeat, experiencing failure is both key in the development of good old-fashioned ‘grit’ and resilience. To quote basketball coach Morgan Wootten, ‘You learn more from losing than winning. You learn how to keep going!’
At Saint Nicholas, we deliver a highquality physical education programme which inspires all pupils with the opportunity to succeed in sport. Sport plays an important role within the personal development of our pupils and we celebrate their outstanding achievements and performances at our annual Sports Award Evening.
Q What else do you think sets you apart?
A The million-dollar question! As Head, I would always encourage parents investing in an independent education to research their options and view any school they were interested in. If, like me, they did not attend an independent school themselves, I would urge them to book and come and see what sets Saint Nicholas apart for themselves. I always take great pride in the feedback we receive from prospective parents when they accept a place at Saint Nicks, they praise the school for its warmth, authenticity, family feel, tailored approach, excellent facilities, and the amazing education and opportunities that we provide.
Q What are you looking forward to in 2025?
A Saint Nicholas School never stops driving forward, developing and changing so all our pupils receive a rich, engaging and challenging education that inspires! In 2025, we are looking forward to, amongst other things, opening the new wing of our incredibly popular and well-established Rocking Horse Nursery, and the installation of three covered padel tennis courts, to extend our existing, floodlit, all weather tennis courts.

James Hunt, co-founder of Durden & Hunt, reflects on the big changes seen in 2024
It's hard to believe we’ve come to the end of 2024, and what a year it has been.
When we look back it’s been a time of change with quite clearly the biggest adjustment being the UK electing a Labour government for the first time in 14 years. Although I’m sure running the country is a complex and complicated task, with many reforms to come, we’ve already seen some swift changes and I’d be remiss not to reflect on the autumn budget.
The increase to stamp duty for those with second homes, and the decision to not extend the current relief for first time buyers, due to finish in spring 2025, has been much discussed within the property industry and how it might impact the market. It’s likely this will give some prospective purchasers, particularly landlords, a cause to pause on their immediate plans and consider their options, however as with most regulatory changes in the long run these fees will become part of the process and accepted costs.
Let’s not forget there are some positive signs within the housing market such as the Base Rate being cut to 4.75% on 7th November, after being held at 5% since August. This follows inflation falling to 1.7%, and below the Bank of England’s 2% target (Rightmove). Although it is
di cult to predict how this will impact mortgages, we would expect it to help keep rates competitive and it’s something we’ll be sure to keep an eye on.
Additionally house prices have shown signs of rising across the country this year and Zoopla further estimates that 26% more homes (than a year ago) have a sale agreed and are working their way through the buying process towards completion.
If you’re thinking about what the new year could mean for your own property plans feel free to reach out to myself or my team for a no obligation chat to help better understand your options.

Braintree Village
It’s 25 not out for the popular Essex shopping outlet
Essex’s premium outlet shopping destination, Braintree Village, has just celebrated its 25th anniversary with a weekend full of events centred around the 90s – the decade that it opened.
Friday 15th November kicked o the weekend of celebrations, with the shopping centre’s PLUS+ rewards club members being treated to free ice-skating sessions to launch the return of the seasonal ice rink for a second year. What’s more, on the 16th and 17th November, the outlet saw a whole host of free entertainment, including performances from 90s dancers and interactive sketches from the cast of Dick Whittington at The Institute, Braintree this Christmas. The Braintree Village team also hosted a live DJ playing hits from the 90s and prize giveaways worth over £5,000, alongside a ‘crack the code’ competition.
Josef O’Sullivan, Centre Director at Braintree Village, says: “This is a landmark date in the history of Braintree Village, which has grown into one of the mostloved outlet shopping destinations in the East of England. It’s incredible to say that we have members of sta that have remained here for 25 years – it shows real dedication and commitment to work in what is a true labour of love for many.
“What makes Braintree Village special, and keeps our guests returning time after time, is our commitment to innovate and look for new ways to engage with our community, such as our seasonal ice rink that launched in 2023 with tremendous success, and the ever-popular
Creative Club. In 2025, we have some big plans and exciting brand names in the pipeline, which we can’t wait to share in due course. Here’s to the next 25 years.”
Previously known as ‘Braintree Freeport’, Braintree Village was built on the site of the former Crittall Windows factory and opened in November 1999. The outlet preserves the iconic Crittall Windows building, which remains a significant part of the area’s industrial heritage and blends the past with the present in a bustling retail destination.
In its 25th year, Braintree Village launched two new family-friendly attractions, an open-air cinema during the summer holidays
