LETTER ABSOLUTELY’S February issue highlights

y a weird quirk of fate, two things that fascinated me when I was younger crop up in this issue: tattoos and psychics. The former stems from my father, who had a host of tatts down both arms, including one of a boxer dog (our family pet). I loved them and always wanted to get one myself, but the fact my father regretted getting them done later in life perhaps put me off. I am still fascinated by the art behind them, so meeting Mike Philp this month was interesting for me. He's an Essex-based tattooist, who has actually taken his skill into the art world. We find out why he crossed over. Then there's TJ Higgs, a psychic medium with followers all over the world. The Essex local is going on tour this year, so I wanted to know how she dealt with the non-believers out there. I have to admit comedy shows like Only Fools & Horses and Phoenix Nights sending up mediums swayed me – but TJ is happy to prove me wrong. Enjoy the issue!

Shape of things

TO COME Mike Philp is a rising star of the artistic scene, with his debut show causing a stir right now. The Essex local lets Absolutely into how his creative mind works By MARK KEBBLE

or someone who was dubbed ‘Silent Mike’ growing up, Mike Philp certainly has plenty to shout about in 2024. Quantus Gallery in London announced last year they were to host a metamorphic new solo exhibition by the Essexbased artist. Introspective presents a series of achromatic and geometric multi-media compositions that seek to explore the depths of emotion, mind, and nature – giving a new perspective to the way in which we view art. “Introspective has probably been in the making for years,” says Mike. “And because it’s a deep perspective into my mind and how I like to translate, I believe that it’s not only been that I’ve been making it, I’ve been almost researching it over the last 10 to 15 years, as I’ve researched the way that people think and feel, especially when I do the tattoos on people. So it’s been a long time.” Ah, yes, tattoos. Body art was in fact the initial reason we came across Mike Philp, and for him it was also the first time he started to hone his artistic approach. “My first steps into the artistic world were in the tattoo industry and understanding several different

styles,” he says. “Tattooing forced me into an industry to become more broader in my styles, to understand different variations of art. And then, through that, I would research and study different art forms because of different styles through tattooing. So that was my first step into it. I’ve been to college, university, but nothing really prepares you for the real world except the real world. “The reason why it’s a great outlet for creativity is because tattooing allows you to meet all different types of people from all different walks of life,” Mike adds. “And then from that you get to understand all different types of stories and journeys and life lessons, and then you connect those with art and you understand the psychology around what it is that they love and who they are. Being able to tattoo hundreds of people throughout my career has given me the perfect insight to who walks the planet and being able to sit down for hours upon time, to enjoy not only being able to create art for them, but also discuss life. It is a great outlet for creativity.” With this grounding, Mike turned his attention to creating his own pieces of art. “My main thing about my art was to be a reflection of who I am and what I believe in,” he says. A DIFFERENT KIND OF ART

INTROSPECTIVE ON SHOW

“When I tattoo I basically take the vision of a client and reinvent that with the perception of what they love or their psychology around what they love. I’ll take those ideas and create something that’s so original and different and utilise my style, which is Geo Realism, to convey what it is they’re trying to say. So looking at it from several different perspectives, it gives us several different views. That’s just like when I tried to explain that in my art. So from my perspective of the new stuff that I’ve created for the first pieces of art, depending on the angle in which you look at the piece, it gives a different perspective. I’ve realised that my art isn’t just art, but it’s an experience.” Conceived from the timeless work of Michelangelo and Bernini, Mike takes the stylised perfection of their works and others, to overlay a geometric pattern constructed from a range of perfect lines and angles

to explore an individual depth that gives light to the omnipresent and consistent existence of geometry and shape in nature. “It’s more about what a sculpture means and how much that holds its timeless value rather than the artist itself,” Mike points out. “I love the fact that it’s so old yet so prevalent in our time. So I’m continuously trying to discover new ways to make my art timeless, which is really important to me.” It’s a decade since Mike moved to Essex, which also offers him an opportunity to learn more about his craft. “Since living here, I’ve found that it is actually a great place to live and much more to it than being a great location,” he smiles. “The career focus was simply being the best I could possibly be with the talent that I had and surrounding myself with the best quality of artists is the best way for you to excel. town, but my studio is in Chelmsford. I have lived there for seven years. Castle Hedingham is beautiful. It’s in the country, but still close enough to get around. I believe that it probably influences me and gives me a moment of peace.” As 2024 starts to take shape, and with Introspective now open at Quantus Gallery, what are Mike’s hopes for the rest of the year? “I would love to collaborate with other artists. Because a lot of art is selfish, it helps me to rediscover a better way of representing it,” he says. “I struggle with the whole idea around creating art for me, of me, so when I had the vision of creating art for the viewer, I would love to maybe work alongside other artists to create a series. I’ve got so many amazing projects on that I feel like it’s going to be such a huge year.” Silent Mike has indeed come far. “I think what being silent taught me when I was younger was to observe and pay attention to the world around me,” he looks back, “and I believe that you can learn a lot from listening in life and observing. your stage show in 2024? A My stage show, Grief is Love, is an emotional rollercoaster that leaves the audience deeply moved. During my demonstrations, the connection between the spirit world and the audience is palpable, as their energy fuels my own. As I bring the evidence and messages from the spirit loved ones, I often look out through the eyes of my spirit communicator and they see their loved one smiling, even in their grief. This brings a profound sense of peace to both the spirit loved ones and the recipients of the messages.

Gibberd Garden in Harlow, Essex. This enchanting location holds a special place in my heart as it was where my husband and I had our handfasting ceremony in July. The garden is truly a hidden gem, offering a magical atmosphere for both children and adults alike. While the little ones can freely explore and play, the grown-ups can bask in the tranquillity and beauty of the gardens. It is a perfect destination for creating cherished memories and finding inner peace. Epping Forest also holds a special place in

my heart as one of my favourite destinations. The serene beauty of the forest and the rich history that permeates the trees make it a truly enchanting place. I find solace and joy in immersing myself in nature, taking long walks through the woods, and connecting with the ancient energy that surrounds me. Whether it’s gathering with friends at the cosy pub or simply taking a peaceful stroll, Epping Forest offers a perfect escape to unwind and rejuvenate. When it comes to dining out, I must admit that I’m not a huge foodie. I prefer restaurants where I can unwind and enjoy a relaxed atmosphere. However, I do appreciate the occasional treat, and Smith’s of Ongar is definitely a place that fits the bill. The food there is always a delight, and the ambiance is perfect for a special occasion. Since moving to Bishop’s Stortford, I have discovered a hidden gem called Home@Eat. This restaurant not only serves excellent food, but also has a unique and quirky atmosphere that I absolutely love. What makes it even better is that Home@Eat is dog-friendly, allowing me to bring Dolly my Chihuahua along for a meal. It’s always a joy to find a restaurant that welcomes both humans and their four-legged companions! ngland football icon Harry Kane has launched the Miles for Smiles virtual walking challenge aimed at supporting children and families receiving care at Haven House Children’s Hospice. The fundraising challenge encourages participants to complete 10,000 steps a day over the month of February 2024 (coinciding with Children’s Mental Health Week 2024), raising awareness and funds for the hospice’s mental health and wellbeing services. Harry Kane, an ambassador for Haven House, has personally committed to the cause, aiming to create a lasting impact on those who need it most. “Haven House provides vital support for families caring for seriously ill children. I have been supporting Haven House’s incredible work for many years and have seen the positive impact the hospice has on children and families in need when they face the toughest times,” says Harry. “It is important to recognise the resilience and determination of these children and families which is an inspiration. Q Growing up in Stock, were you exposed to good cooking from an early age? A Mum was a superb home cook, so I was lucky enough to be exposed to a lot of good cooking with all types of ingredients from as early as I can remember. Everything we had was home made from scratch except my Weetos in the morning on a school day! Q Was there one moment that

“Who else can say they are the head chef of the only pub in the world with two Michelin stars?” Q How do you look back on the experience of working at your parents’ pub, The Ship, close to Stock? A Very fondly. I worked as many spare hours as I could and was really looked after by my friends Lee and Kelly, the landlords. I did my growing up in that environment of banter and hard work. Q What kind of things were

you cooking there?

A Very simple pub food, lasagne, jacket

potatoes, etc, but the love and effort that went into it all and the busy pub environment where everyone got in the mix was great fun.

Q What was the biggest thing you learnt during that time? A Everyone was a lot older than me in the kitchen, so I learnt a lot of life lessons with regards to working hard, taking care of ingredients and actually how to talk to girls properly! Q What culinary journey have you taken before ending up working with Tom Kerridge? A After studying chemistry and forensic

science at university, I went full time at The Ship because that’s what I wanted to do. After three months I thought if I want to do this properly I need to go to London and work for The Gordon Ramsay Group, which I did for two and a half years. Q How did you find the early

days working for Tom?

A Hard and a blur, the standard and pace was

so much higher than I had ever experienced or imagined, but the respect given to ingredients and seasonality was inspiring.

Q How does it feel to now be the head chef of The Hand & Flowers? A To be honest it’s absolutely magic, who else can say they are the head chef of the only pub in the world with two Michelin stars? I am extremely proud and respectful of the responsibility on my shoulders. Q How would you describe your cooking style? A Classic British with French foundations, we look to source the best possible ingredients that have been selected with care and prepared with the utmost love and respect.

Q How do you approach what’s on The Hand & Flowers’ menu? A Daily communication with our suppliers, selecting what’s the best of the best at that moment. Q Are there a couple of dishes on the menu that you are particularly loving right now? A The simplicity of the omelette is always one of the inspirations for me coming to work here, but I am particularly loving our seasonal set lunch menu which we change frequently as it really allows the whole team to have an input into changes and hearing the guest’s feedback is always great! Q What’s in store at The Hand & Flowers? A We have some really exciting plans in

the pipeline that we can talk about soon, and we aren’t far away from The Hand & Flowers celebrating 20 years (in 2025) so we will start planning some exciting events to mark that huge milestone.

he Swan in Loddon is a busy and lively 'local' pub with restaurant and rooms. They have 10 bedrooms that serve business guests and leisure visitors alike, and they’re in a great spot for exploring the known local areas of Norfolk. Two of the rooms are dog friendly, and the bar area is dog friendly for dining too. They have first and ground floor dining rooms, providing a restaurant ambience away from the busy bar, or diners can choose to eat in the bar so they can soak up the cheerful chatter. The bar has a traditional, country estate pub feel with warm colours, old bar paraphernalia on the walls, and traditional stools at the bar. They have a large open fire in the back bar with space for dining, perfect in the winter after a cold dog walk, as well as a good size garden area for a lunch outside in the summer months.

Their wine list boasts an intriguing line up, with excellent by the glass wines including New Zealand Sauvignon, Australian Chardonnay and a Romanian Pinot Noir. The bottled wine is where the fun starts with a quality offering from well-known grapes and also some not so well-known. The wine list is compiled by their landlord who has a very keen interest in wine. So much so that he has his own fine wine list, "Andrew’s choice", where he has picked some fine whites and reds to introduce you to something different without a hefty price tag. For the non alcoholic drinkers The Swan has a lager, ale, gin and other non alcoholic elixir alternatives, plus more traditional raspberry and rhubarb lemonades, ginger beers, flavoured tonics (from Norfolk) and, of course, fruit shoots for the children. And then there’s the food. The menu has a modern British feel, which can feature some classic favourites 'remastered'. Almost everything is made in their kitchen, from

the steak mince burger, to the brioche bun for the burger. Even the potato rosti served with breakfast is all made from scratch by their talented team of chefs. Pub classics include Wherry battered haddock and chips, with quite honestly the most delicious tartare sauce you will ever taste, and their 6oz steak mince burger, which is kept simple with bacon and monterey jack cheese in one of their homemade brioche buns. For something a little more refined you could choose halibut with cockle chowder or local venison loin, smoked pomme purée and red wine sauce. To finish tuck into their popular locally made chocolate and brown butter ganache with Baileys ice cream, or a flavourful tonka bean panna cotta, strawberries and honeycomb. t’s a bitterly cold Friday morning when I visit the new Blink Brow Bar salon on Avery Row in London. I’m freezing because I’ve worn the wrong coat for the plummeting temperatures, but I soon warm up once inside the cosy and inviting space. With a chic green and gold interior, it’s only been open for a few months, but it’s already a popular spot with beauty insiders. Blink Brow Bar is well-known for being the authority on all things brows, but I’m actually booked in to see the salon’s expert lash technician for a Dream Lash Lift/Curl and Tint. Sitting me back on one of the comfy reclinable chairs, she asks if I’d prefer a lift or a curl. As my natural lashes are quite short and stubby, she recommends a lift to lengthen and give me a fluttery lash line. First she perms my lashes straight, which requires me to keep my eyes closed. There’s a little bit of waiting, but it’s completely painless and the time goes quickly whilst we chat. Once my lashes are permed, I get to check the progress in the mirror. My lashes already look amazing, but there’s still the tint to go. The lash technician recommends a blue-black shade, to give me a glossy finish. She explains that pure black can appear quite flat. There’s a little bit less waiting this time, followed by an eye-bath, to cleanse. The results are very pretty – like I naturally have super long lashes. Lasting 5-6 weeks, the best bit is there’s no need for eye make-up. I can see this becoming addictive. BLINK BROW BAR Avery Row, £95

Carly Glendinning tries Pliability, a ﬁtness app focused on mobility training

’ll confess, I’ve never been that flexible. My hamstrings are so tight that even touching my toes is a challenge. So I was intrigued when I was invited to try Pliability, a fitness app focused on mobility training. Formerly known as ROMWOD, Pliability was originally for CrossFit athletes. Since rebranding, they have expanded to provide daily stretching routines aimed at golfers, runners, swimmers, and gym-goers (like myself). Many people focus on strength and stamina in their training, underestimating the importance of mobility, coordination, and balance. Endorsed by professional athletes (including golfer

Lee Westwood), Pliability’s routines are a fusion of mobility, yoga, prehab, rehab, recovery, mindfulness, and strength. The first time I log in to the app, I am pleased to see that the daily routines are quite short. Most of the videos are 23-24 minutes, and I can easily fit a session in after I get back from the gym. The app suggests a new video for me to do each day, although there are hundreds to browse. The videos show two ‘models’, who take you through several poses in sequence. The one on the left shows less flexibility and the one on the right shows more. I am instructed to hold each pose for around 2-3 minutes by the voiceover. You need

very little equipment to do Pliability. All you really need is a mat, although blocks and resistance bands can come in handy if you are less flexible and need to modify the poses. After a few days I find myself really getting into it. It’s satisfying to mark the videos as ‘complete’ and see my progress charted in the app. Holding each pose and really focusing on it also becomes quite relaxing. Q Were you a creative child? A I was lucky enough to grow up with a dad who

encouraged me to be as creative as possible. He worked in woodworking and so appreciated intricate design. I have a book somewhere that I wrote when I was a child on how to make random stuff into art!

Q How did you develop your interest

in craftsmanship and design?

A It all stems from my dad who would take me

into his workshop to keep me out of trouble at a young age and it just grew from there. I started learning from him and making my own furniture, before eventually attending university to take a course in furniture making.

Q Pre-launching your own business, where did

you gain experience and what would you say was the most important thing you learned? A I attended Ipswich University to study cabinet and furniture design, before working on King’s Road for an interior designer and making furniture for them. From there, I moved to designing and fitting the interiors of high-end yachts, which is where I fell in love with premium design and the intricate way in which it should be made properly. Eventually, I decided to strike out on my own and start making furniture for established kitchen companies. As more and more came on board, I realised that this is where my future was before deciding to open Davonport and do it for myself! INTERIORS • PROFILE Q What were the big trends back in the early days? A Kitchen trends come and go, and we are

seeing a resurgence in trends – though slightly tweaked – that we would have seen 30 years ago, especially the use of natural wood. Thirty years ago, maple and cherry were hugely popular, with walnut coming on the scene about 18 years ago, while oak will be forever eternally popular. Everything was a lot more ornate back then, and while we are seeing more detail come back into fashion, I am pleased to say it isn’t quite at the same level as when I first started out.

Q How would you say you have evolved? A We started out in the traditional space, with classic

kitchens. Our style has evolved over time to have a more contemporary approach, but with a classical edge. This year, we’ll be launching the Sparkford kitchen, which is unlike anything that has come before and so it is a really exciting time for us. We’ve also moved into other rooms in the home as open planning living emerged, building matching media units and even home offices. There is also more of a focus on utility and boot rooms being as stylish as the kitchen, and so our offering has expanded to include these rooms.

Q Were you based in Colchester back then? A Life started out in West Mersea before moving to

a workshop in Tiptree. It wasn’t until 2001 that we moved to Colchester, before moving to our current premises in 2011 where we had a bigger showroom and workshop. We now have a showroom on Pear Tree Road, which is attached to our 20,000sq ft workshop, where we make kitchens onsite.

Q From day one, what did you want to offer? A Because of my background working within

premium markets including fine furniture, I knew this is where I wanted to focus my business. I still believe that traditional methods used in cabinetry making that have been around for hundreds of years still produce the best quality and finish, which is why we still use them at Davonport. But these methods require a higher degree of skill and are more labour intensive, which is why we do operate at the premium end of kitchen design.

Q How do you tend to work on new projects? A We spend a lot of time with our clients at the start

It is important to be a partner in their journey and help them. From areas such as wish lists, budgets, expectations, a successful project relies upon everyone singing from the same sheet. Once we have a developed brief, we create a visual, spend time going through it and tweaking it if required, before it being made in our workshop, using techniques developed over hundreds of years.

Q Are you doing anything to mark

30 years in business? A We’re launching a new kitchen range and it is probably the one that has excited me the most in a long time as it is totally different to anything else we’ve done. We’ve been nominated for two industry-leading awards, including Best Kitchen Showroom – we’re down to the last four – which would be amazing to bring home and a great way to celebrate 30 years in the business. Over the last year, we have invested heavily in our showroom, including installing solar panels across our 20,000sq ft factory to ensure we are on the journey to being Net Zero. Rather than throw a big party, I’d like to continue on that journey in 2024.

sychology of colour was the starting point for the comprehensive renovation and enhancement of this Grade II Listed townhouse. The main objective was to restore and renovate the tired multiple dwelling townhouse into a modern and functional family home – and the owners wanted to inject vibrant colours to elevate the interior to an exciting new level. A notable quirky aspect of this project is the use of less common colours from the Farrow & Ball colour library. The clients hired a colour consultant to help select much more statement colours and finishes for each room. By leveraging the consultant’s extensive knowledge of color psychology, current trends and innovative techniques, the clients’ visions were brought to life in vibrant and unique spaces. Another distinctive feature of the project is the bespoke internal joinery throughout the house. This includes fitted wardrobes, a study bookcase and a breakfast bar unit in the kitchen, adding personalised and functional elements to the design. The shaker-style open-plan kitchen includes dark timber kitchen cabinets, styled with a few fluted glass cabinets and white marble worktop. Farrow & Ball’s Tanners Brown No.255 was used on all walls, skirting, and window frame. A bespoke built-in shaker style breakfast bar cupboard was created to hide all breakfast essentials. The architrave to the dining space was painted in Farrow & Ball’s Light Blue No.22. Throughout the house, the timber banisters were restored to their original glory. Oval Room blue No.85 was chosen for all hallways and skirting, enhancing the overall aesthetics. small easel and paintbrush on the table are a subtle clue to what’s in store. The brush is dipped in blue paint, and the table is set for dinner. This is the Picasso Experience, and we are about to eat a meal inspired by the artist’s favourite dishes, recreating recipes with ingredients from the Mediterranean that he remained drawn to throughout his life. We’re intrigued. What did Picasso eat? Half a century since his death, there has been a lot of focus on Picasso recently. A BBC documentary revealed his complex personal relationships and his – let’s say – challenging behaviour; his children have long

fought among themselves and struggled to manage the estate and legacy. With more than 10 museums around the world filled exclusively with his paintings, drawings and ceramics, he is probably the 20th century’s most famous artist. And while we might associate him most with the south of France, Pablo Picasso was born in Malaga, the sunny Andalusian city known by British tourists mostly as the gateway to the Costa del Sol. But all those visitors who land at Malaga and head straight for the coast are missing out. This is a beautiful city that’s been undergoing a bit of a renaissance over the past few years and has emerged as a significant cultural hub. Not only is Malaga home to more than 40 museums, but it has a remarkable cathedral,

a Roman theatre and an 11th century Moorish fortress as well as great beaches, excellent restaurants and a buzzing nightlife. It’s an excellent weekend destination and would make a great base for a longer stay too. We’re staying at Anantara Villa Padierna Palace, along the coast from Malaga between Marbella and Estepona. It’s a sprawling, luxurious hotel that offers a Picasso Experience package as well as three 18-hole golf courses and an academy that attracts golfers from around the world. We’re here for Picasso, and after a smooth flight and a short ride from the airport, we’re ready to discover what the artist liked to eat. But first there’s a tour of the place, which is improbably beautiful. The hotel is known for its impressive art collection as well as A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

its impossibly photogenic courtyard pool surrounded by lush palm trees. There are several private villas in addition to the main building (the one where Michelle Obama stayed has been named after her). As part of the Picasso package, dinner is set up for us privately in a romantic, secluded room. It starts with champagne and Picasso’s tastes prove to be very much focused on local fare. There’s a lovely chilled almond and garlic soup to start, followed by a simple bowl of clams in tomato sauce and a piece of grilled tuna with onions. Picasso was said to love the local Vino Dulce, and a glass of that accompanies an excellent honey cake dessert. The meal sets us up for the following day’s itinerary. We head into Malaga to

meet our lovely guide, Maria, who starts by showing us the cathedral, constructed over almost 300 years from 1528 on the site of a former mosque, but left with one unfinished tower. Inside it’s vast and ornate, though damage from the Civil War remains apparent. Nearby is another church where Picasso was baptised. Next stop is the Picasso Museum, opened in 2003 and founded by Christine Ruiz-Picasso, widow of the artist’s eldest son Paulo Ruiz-Picasso, with their son (Picasso’s grandson) Bernard. As early as the 1950s, Picasso had expressed a desire to have a home for his work in Malaga, and this wish was realised with the opening of the museum, housed in an elegant 16th

It’s a small collection, including works inspired by the Civil War and Picasso’s Minotaur, as well as early works featuring his first wife and their son, beautifully displayed. Nearby is the house where Picasso was born and spent his early years, and this is another museum. We take pictures of ourselves sitting with a bronze statue of Picasso on a bench outside his house before heading to dinner at buzzing El Pimpi, a restaurant that’s part-owned by local resident Antonio Banderas and decorated with bullfighting posters and wine barrels. Here we feast on cured meats, grilled squid, fried anchovies and croquettes in a busy and fun space, finishing with more of the delicious sweet wine. We also fit in some meals at the hotel, where La Loggia restaurant has beautiful views from the terrace and serves a single whole tomato as an amuse bouche, with a serrated knife and a side of salt, plus excellent local olive oil and vinegar. For a tomato lover like me it’s almost the perfect meal. Also excellent is the gazpacho and the grilled fish, while the poolside eaterie serves up poke bowls and burgers. Have I mentioned the spa? It’s lavish and luxe, and our weekend visit fits in a dreamy massage too. anantara.com

s a Saffron Walden resident, I am a longstanding advocate for our bustling market town, which was recently named the best place to live in the East of England, and also provides a happy and safe backdrop for pupils’ learning at Dame Bradbury’s. Our vibrant Junior School is located right in the heart of the community, on a site which has housed a school for over 700 years. Our school forms part of Stephen Perse Schools and aims to encourage independent, creative and reflective thinking within our pupils, and providing opportunities for them to learn in and engage with our local community helps to ensure that life outside the classroom remains busy and exciting. I firmly believe that a well-rounded education means involving students with the broader community beyond the school gates. From sport to volunteering, our pupils are involved in many local clubs and activities, and all of them have a social responsibility to be the best they can be by supporting and engaging with the community.

Our pupils get out and about at every opportunity – in our gardens, grounds, and on educational trips – for lessons and fun. In our school grounds, children have access to fun activities and outdoor learning opportunities in our Forest Schools, from toasting marshmallows over a campfire, meeting wildlife and identifying tree species. Forest School is integral to our curriculum, and outdoor experiences help our pupils learn about the natural environment, how

130-seat theatre is used as a rehearsal space by local dance and performance groups to promote performing arts to pupils both at Dame Bradbury’s and from the local area. While we are keen to ensure our boys and girls have access to high quality education and opportunities, we also want to encourage them to give back and engage with the community. Evidence Two major long-term studies will provide important data on both UK education and growing up during and after the pandemic

e are surrounded by ‘pop’ surveys – headlinegrabbing findings that make lively news, but often don’t give us much in the way of reliable information. Good then to have two major longitudinal studies into education, beginning this year and designed to provide a solid base of evidence about what it’s like to be at school in the here and now. ‘Five to Twelve’ and ‘Growing Up in the 2020s’ are being undertaken by the National Centre for Social Research and have been commissioned and funded by the Department for Education (DfE). There will also be collaboration with the National Children’s Bureau and National Foundation for Educational Research. The studies run concurrently and span primary and secondary education over a five-year period. Importantly, data will be gathered from independent schools as well as the state sector. Longitudinal studies are, of course, a very different beast from their snapshot cousins as Jules Allen, senior researcher on ‘Five to Twelve’, explains. “The

main benefit of a longitudinal study as opposed to a single wave (which we call a cross-sectional study) is that, because we collect data at repeated intervals over time, researchers who use the dataset can identify developments and changes in the population that we’re studying,” she says. “You can look at causation rather than just correlation.”

GATH E R I N G DATA Longitudinal studies require careful design. “We definitely do not start these studies with what we want to say, we start with what we want to find,” says Jules. What is under the spotlight here is understanding more about education outcomes and inequalities – why some children do better than others and the multiple factors shaping these outcomes. The groundwork for ‘Five to Twelve’ began in summer 2022 and a ‘dress rehearsal’ took place in spring 2023.

While many longitudinal studies begin by randomly sampling postcode files, the target here is specific – children in schools – so both studies began with the DfE central database of all children in school. That database was then used to randomly select children via their schools. As study parameters include insights into the independent sector (where there’s no such central database), the research team asked independent schools to opt in. From there, they were able to gather a random sample of pupils for the study. For ‘Five to Twelve’ participating children have annual cognitive exercises until Year 6, when they respond to questions. For their parents, there’s a mix of face-to-face and online or phone surveys annually. For ‘Growing Up in the 2020s’ it’s an initial face-to-face survey and then phone or online surveys in succeeding years. Teachers are asked for input too, with an additional

element where headteachers respond to describe school ethos, culture, and so on. This body of evidence gathered over time requires buy-in and commitment from all those involved. Jules says they are delighted so many have responded so positively. “People are quite enthusiastic. In particular, we’ve found that children really enjoy the cognitive exercises. And teachers too – despite how busy they are – we have found that they respond to the survey.” We should be grateful to these thousands of participants for their time

because their input will provide a seam of really useful data in the public domain. It might be used to draw comparison with earlier or later surveys to see differences over time, or to gain closer insights into different educational experiences – and educational inequalities. It will also give us insights into areas such as wellbeing. Then there is the impact of Covid – never far from the surface in any current debate. “All of the children who will participate will have lived through Covid – particularly children in the

‘Growing up in the 2020s’ study, who lived through it during a critical time in their education,” says Jules. “Although we can’t compare Covid with past studies, we can look at outcomes and differences.” These twin surveys are surely worth the effort involved for this element alone. In a little over five years’ time, findings will shine a light on the longer-term impact of pandemic restrictions on our children. MAKERS Emma Reynolds’ graphic novel tells the true stories of 16 youth activists from around the globe and their mission to create a better planet

here’s no doubt Drawn to Change the World is an ambitious book. Some three years in the making, it brings together the voices of 16 youth activists on environment and climate change, with the stories of their campaigns told by 16 artists through a graphic novel format. For author Emma Reynolds, this has been a labour of love – all-consuming work. While Greta Thunberg is among the stories told, she is somewhere in the middle because Emma has drawn out a longer seam with a global reach. “It was important for me to show people that although she’s

done incredible work, she didn’t start it,” says Emma. “I really wanted to highlight indigenous activists. There are activists of colour, people of colour from all over the world who have been fighting for this not just since 2018, but for decades.” The book is organised as a loose timeline and begins with Autumn Pelter, who began a campaign for clean water for Canada’s First Nation communities when she was just eight-years-old. Activists include Melati and Isabel Wijsen, sisters who began the Bye Bye Plastic Bags movement in Bali, and Leah Namugerwa, the young Ugandan who devised an internationally successful tree planting initiative. Emma has also included

brave young people who face very real threats in their home countries by the mere act of speaking up on environmental issues. Researching and speaking to all the youth activists was complex. Emma read and researched, also reaching out direct – often via social media – and interviewing the activists to hear their stories. She is grateful, she says, for the “amazing team” at HarperAlley (HarperCollins’ graphic novel arm) who supported the project with the mountain of admin required in liaising with the 16 artists around the globe. “It was really important to me to have the book make young people feel that they have agency” illustrator and author Derick Brooks, each one has a mini biography within Drawn to Change the World. As an artist herself, Emma was determined to give their creativity exposure. “It’s inspiring for kids to see people who look like them and think: ‘I could do that when I grow up’,” says Emma. “This book was a massive team effort,” she adds. “I know it’s got my name on the front, but it’s a humungous team effort.” While Emma trained as an illustrator, she spent some six years working within animation as a character designer for children’s TV before switching to her dream author/illustrator role. Her background, and storyboarding skills, were useful when it came to translating interviews into storylines. These were then “reverse engineered” into a workable script so that each of the artists could draw their youth activist story. The graphic novel format works brilliantly here, packing in information in a succinct and compelling way – telling us not just about the campaigns, but also the campaigners, their world and their motivations. “Picture books

and graphic novels are my favourite books to read. I just think they are such a unique art form,” says Emma. “Really good for tough topics as well.” And climate change is a tough topic – especially for this 8-12 age group who have seen and read so much grim news in their short lives. This is where Emma came in with the whole idea – she wanted to counter the forces of what she calls “doomism”. Readers can also find out more about what each youth activist is doing now, choose to follow them on social media or via their websites. This, along with further material on climate change – timelines, background detail, further reading and glossary of terms – add up to a handbook to inspire the next generation of change makers. Emma, who has form on this herself as founder of global illustrator campaign #KidLitForClimate, says positive messages are vital. “It was really important to me to have the book make young people feel that they have agency,” she says. “I’m not saying we have to put everything on their shoulders and they have to fix it. It’s that they do have agency.”

he desire to look up and to learn more about the skies that look down upon us has led to schools like mine creating opportunities for children to stargaze and learn more about the universe around them. Of course, participating in astronomy-based activities fosters an interest in science, but there is far more to it than that. Stargazing encourages children to use their imagination, to question the how and the why of everything around them

and it can even lead to exciting discussions around evolution and the power of gravity. Children are naturally inquisitive by nature, so having access to telescopes to widen their understanding of the skies and to better understand our own solar system helps them to develop their own verbal reasoning and logic as well as their vocabulary and literacy. Here at St Margaret’s, we are providing stargazing across all prep school year groups as part of STEM education, and we are even bringing astronomy into our nursery and up to pre-prep in Year 2. We have found that children are never too young to enjoy the awe and wonder of space. Looking up at the night sky can boost emotional development in young children and improve concentration and focus as they learn to observe quietly, taking time and space to contemplate the world around them. As we juggle the demands of the curriculum and make decisions on what to include, and what to reduce, subjects that open up children’s minds should be high up on school agendas. Stargazing provides wonderful food for thought and can transition across other subjects – including history, religious education and maths. For example, many children find it fascinating that the stars we are looking at are the same stars that amazed people throughout history. Likewise,

measuring distances from the Earth to the Moon and between planets in our solar system can be mind-blowing for young children. Making stargazing more accessible really does enrich learning opportunities. Children’s understanding can be supported through technology and specialist apps – which helps make it an appealing and accessible area of discovery to a much wider audience. As well as looking at stargazing as an integral part of the STEM curriculum, we are developing co-curricular programmes and clubs. Due to the popularity of the subject in the prep school, we are even opening our very own school observatory this year. PUBLIC EYE Should politicians publish their tax returns? A Partner at Raffingers takes a closer look

ith tax return season now upon us, and with the potential of a general election in the not-too-distant future, many will be curious as to what do our politicians report on their tax returns. Whilst in the USA it is fairly routine practice for politicians to publish details of their income, British politicians seem more reluctant to do so. In 2016, debate around the merits of this policy was reignited after the Panama Papers, a series of documents relating to offshore investments held by high profile personalities, were leaked. In a call for greater transparency by elected officials, the then Prime Minister, David Cameron, faced public pressure to release his tax returns. Opponents, on the other hand, contend that tax returns are private documents and that forcing politicians to disclose them infringes on their personal privacy. David Cameron did eventually publish his returns. But how useful was this information to the general public? Researchers who reviewed disclosures of income made by politicians in 175 countries worldwide concluded that “public, rather than confidential, disclosure is associated with lower perceived corruption

and better government” and that “identifying the assets, liabilities, income sources, and conflicts of interest, as opposed to income and wealth levels, is more consistently associated with better government”. In other words, public confidence in politicians does not require politicians to disclose details about themselves which are private, and are more trusting of politicians who are open about their finances generally. That said, disclosures made by politicians are only beneficial if they can be understood by the general public. Unfortunately, the public often doesn’t understand what can sometimes be fairly technical documents and can rely on a sensationalist and biased press for interpretation and commentary. There are political points to be scored by politicians who release their returns. In 2012 former Chancellor of the Exchequer, under Labour, Ed Balls, voluntarily released his tax returns, setting a precedent for financial openness.

Jeremy Corbyn posted his income tax computations for the year 2015/16 (the SA302 equivalent) on his website jeremycorbyn. org together with some detailed schedules. In that year his income totalled £114,345 and included £77,019 from employments and £36,045 from UK pensions. He claimed gift aid on donations of £5,420. Interestingly, the then leader of the opposition had argued, that while he was willing to disclose his income and tax payments, certain aspects of his financial affairs, such as family income, should remain private. It has been argued that if all taxpayers tax returns were made public, the transparency would create more equal societies, however the national data protection authority required its immediate withdrawal. Canada, New Zealand and Ireland provide information about individuals who evade tax, but there is no evidence of a move towards making all individuals’ tax returns publicly available. Last year saw the new Percy’s Adventures half term ‘edutainment’ events, a new play area situated close to the admissions, and a busy year of other exciting events and developments. The Walled Gardens celebrated 20 years since they were re-opened and visitors can now explore the Himalayan foothills in the Asia geographic zone. ssex Arboretum and environmental charity Markshall, in Coggeshall, is set to increase its opening hours for 2024, giving local communities more opportunities to go and explore the 200-acre landscape and its 5,000 plus trees, play areas and stunning Walled Gardens. Markshall first opened its doors to the public in 1993 after the charity’s establishment in 1971. Since then, thousands of visitors of all ages have experienced the magic of walking through a world of trees, set in Essex countryside. For many years Markshall has opened on different winter and summer opening hours, with reduced opening in the winter. In 2024 however, this will change: Markshall will now be open Tuesday-Sunday all year round. They will also be open every Bank Holiday Monday and Mondays during the Essex school holidays, giving even more hours and opportunities to explore a unique landscape that is home to trees and plants from every temperate area of the globe. “Our visitors have been asking for more access to our arboretum, walled gardens, woodland walks, play area and café. We are delighted to meet this demand by opening three more days each week in 2024,” says Markshall CEO, Dave Finkle. This isn’t the only new change at Markshall, though – as a charity, they must take place in stages. For example, new covered areas for outdoor seating will also start to appear, which will provide a place to sit and enjoy delicious treats and drinks under shelter. The Orchard Kitchen Café will be closed Monday-Thursday, except on Bank Holidays and during school holidays. Instead, Percy’s Pantry will make its way to the
